Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Good morning, this is Brenda, and today's movie review is going to be the Rocky Horror Picture Show from 1975.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: It's also going to be a little bit of a tribute to Tim Curry.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: His loss has been hard on a lot of people, myself included.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: I believe the first time I saw the Rocky Horror Picture Show, I was 15 years old, and it was at the Eastgate Mall in Indianapolis, Indiana.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: This would have been in the mid-80s, and I was immediately hooked.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: I was just mesmerized and thought, these are my people.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Every free Friday or Saturday night that I had, I had to be there for a midnight showing of this.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Even after moving to Florida, I continued to go in Pompano Beach.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: My friends and I would even acknowledge his birthday every April 19th, even though he didn't know it.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: He's tattooed on my arm as Pennywise, and although we changed the spelling, my youngest daughter is named Curry.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: His autobiography, Vegabond, came out in 2025, and a dear friend gave me a copy of it, and I'd like to read a little part of it from the chapter called Let's Do the Time Warp Again.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Jim and Richard O'Brien, bless them, were very faithful to me, as was Lou Adler, who had brought the play stateside and cut the deal with 20th Century Fox and would be co-producing the film.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Jim made it clear to me that he was not seriously considering anybody else, and this may be hubris, but I honestly don't think that Lou had any interest in being involved unless I stayed on as Frank.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Many people believed and felt compelled to tell me that popping my cinematic cherry by playing such a uniquely extreme character would be damaging to any future hopes I might have for a film career, or at least any career that didn't cast me as a power-hungry, omnisexual, transvestite in fishnets.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Here we are in 2026, and there is no way anybody else could have played that character.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: I am thrilled he stayed on as Dr.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Frankenfurter.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: And we all know that character did not hurt Tim Curry's acting career.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: He went on to be in Clue and Legend, It, Annie, Congo, Home Alone 2, Lost in New York, Muppet Treasure Island, and Adam's Family Reunion.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: I love this movie so much that in the 80s I went into a blockbuster to see if I could actually buy the VHS, and I paid$89.99 for it.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: I think I had to order and wait two weeks for it and then go back to the store and pick it up.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: It wasn't as easy to obtain a movie to have in your house.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Tim Curry's death is definitely the end of an era, and August 25th will always be in my heart, and I'll always make it a point to watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Even after his stroke in 2012 and he became wheelchair bound, he still made it a point to go to the conventions, and my daughter Curry and I were lucky enough to see him in Tampa in 2017.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: This film also has some recognizable names: Barry Bostwick, Susan Sarandon, singer Meatloaf, Patricia Quinn, tap dancer Little Nell, and Richard O'Brien.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: We know Barry Bostwick as the mayor from Spin City, and he is always trying to peddle those tidy whiteys at the conventions.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Susan Sarandon went on to play in Film and Louise, The Witches of Eastwick, and Bull Durham.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Meatloaf recorded 12 albums in his career.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: The ones that really stand out are Bat Out of Hell, 1 and 2, Bad Attitude, and Dead Ringer.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Then we have our Patricia Quinn, who's such a nice person.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: She's one that I talked with quite a while at one of the conventions.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: She went on to be in Rob Zombie's The Lords of Salem and Shock Treatment, which we'll talk about in a little bit, and she's also the famous lips at the beginning of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: I can remember asking people if they'd like to go see it with me, and the minute you say Rocky Horror Picture Show, the word horror stands out to them, and they're like, I don't like that kind of movie, but that's not really what it is.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: It's like one of those movies.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Is it comedy?
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Is it a musical?
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Is it science fiction?
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: For fun, I just decided to look it up and see what the all-knowing internet says, and it describes it as a horror musical.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: So the internet didn't really have my back.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: I keep wanting to call it a science fiction.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Well, hell, the opening song is science fiction double feature, and it really is the music that makes this movie so great.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Who hasn't done the time warp?
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: And I could listen to Tim Curry sing Sweet Transvestite all day long.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: We have Brad and Janet who just left their friend's wedding and they get a flat tire in a storm.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: They come up on a castle, there's a party going on.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: The host being, of course, our famous Dr.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Frankenfurter.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: They've apparently arrived on a very special night because Dr.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Frankenfurter is making his little boy toy Rocky, which makes me think of Frankenstein.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Anyway, Brad and Janet spend the night, and it seems like everybody's getting freaky deaky with everybody.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: After all that chaos, two of the servants, Riff Raff and Magenta, who are actually brother and sister, kill everybody but the Earthlings, being Brad and Janet and Dr.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Scott, and they allow them to leave because the castle is actually a spaceship that is gonna take them back to the planet of transsexual.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: That feels like the short version, but I'm gonna go ahead and see how many wine glasses this movie deserves.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Heary?
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Eh, we have a castle in the storm at night, one wine glass.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: The environment, of course, old castle, a lot of music, dancing, singing, wine glass.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Evil?
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: No, I wouldn't call it evil.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: We just have a guy who likes to have a lot of sex.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Empathy, I wouldn't even give it that either.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's no children, no animals, nothing like that.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: People die, not a big deal.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Entertaining, oh my gosh, yes.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Five wine glasses.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: And just for this movie, I'm making up a new category, Tim Curry, and that's 10 wine glasses.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: And here we are with 17 wine glasses on a five-glass scale.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: This movie's fun, it's fun to go to with your friends.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: You learn the dialogue, the back and forth with the movie screen.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: These days there's usually a shadow cast, so it's like you get live theater with your movie.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: There's also a follow-up movie to this one called Shock Treatment.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: There's only two songs I actually like from that one, but you get the same characters, Brad and Janet from Denton, played by different people.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: There are a couple familiar faces in there.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: It just doesn't have the same oomph as the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: We'll be back on our normal schedule next week.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: I just wanted to do this little tribute to Tim Curry.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Next week's movie's gonna be Hellraiser from 1987, so until then.
