- 0:00Speaker 1: There are now just eighty eight days until election day,
- 0:03Speaker 1: and things keep looking worse and worse for Donald Trump
- 0:06Speaker 1: and his Republican Party, and Republicans, well, at least some
- 0:10Speaker 1: of them, they seem to know they're in trouble. The
- 0:15Speaker 1: Hill reports Fox Business host Larry Cudlow, who served as
- 0:18Speaker 1: National Economic Council Director during President Trump's first term, scolded
- 0:24Speaker 1: Senator Tommy Tumberville during an interview Wednesday about the lack
- 0:27Speaker 1: of big Republican accomplishments this year. Quote, the Republicans are
- 0:32Speaker 1: doing nothing. I mean, you got stuff out there. The
- 0:35Speaker 1: polls are lousy, Cudlow declared at the start of the interview.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Damn, but yes, the polls are lousy.
- 0:44Speaker 1: If you're a Republican, you might have already heard some
- 0:47Speaker 1: of these numbers this week, but they bear repeating.
- 0:50Speaker 2: For the first time in a decade, a new.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Roarters poll finds that voters prefer Democrats over Republicans when
- 0:56Speaker 1: it comes to economic issues, and a new Association to
- 1:00Speaker 1: Press poll finds sixty nine percent say the state of
- 1:04Speaker 1: the economy is poor. That's seven out of every ten people.
- 1:10Speaker 1: And Donald Trump's approval rating and poll after poll is
- 1:14Speaker 1: either at or near an all time low for.
- 1:17Speaker 2: His political career.
- 1:20Speaker 1: The one Republican who still seems very much in denial
- 1:24Speaker 1: about the uphill battle Republicans are facing this fall is
- 1:28Speaker 1: Donald Trump.
- 1:30Speaker 2: He's been saying the polls are fake.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Today, in a new interview with punch Bowl News, he
- 1:35Speaker 1: tried out a new line when trying to explain why
- 1:38Speaker 1: voters might reject Republicans in the November midterms.
- 1:44Speaker 3: The question is will they vote because a lot of
- 1:46Speaker 3: them are very angry and Republicans.
- 1:51Speaker 4: To be honest with you, I don't know.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I mean, they're angry Republicans, but.
- 1:55Speaker 3: They're not that interesting.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Why they're not angry at me? But they are angry
- 1:59Speaker 2: at republic what me? No, they're not angry at me.
- 2:06Speaker 2: They're just angry at the people doing exactly what I
- 2:09Speaker 2: tell them to do. But they're not angry at me. Yes,
- 2:15Speaker 2: yes they are.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Donald Trump is living in a fantasy world of his
- 2:19Speaker 1: own making. Because Americans have had it. They've had it
- 2:22Speaker 1: with Donald Trump's war of choice in Iran. They've had
- 2:25Speaker 1: it with gas prices, with inflation and the high cost
- 2:28Speaker 1: of everything. The polls tell us that also Trump voters
- 2:34Speaker 1: are telling us that directly all this week MS Now's
- 2:38Speaker 1: Alex Tabit has been talking to Trump voters, and I'll
- 2:42Speaker 1: let you decide if these people sound happy with their president.
- 2:48Speaker 5: What does it feel like to live with that economic pressure? Stressful,
- 2:55Speaker 5: very stressful because you never know, you know, I can
- 2:57Speaker 5: get laid off tomorrow, then I'm pretty much homeless because
- 3:00Speaker 5: you know, you can't save now. Every dollar you have
- 3:02Speaker 5: has to go to gas, groceries, bills, rent, So there's
- 3:06Speaker 5: no cushion for you to save now like you had
- 3:08Speaker 5: back in the day, where could put money aside and say, okay,
- 3:10Speaker 5: I got money for you know, Okay, something happens now
- 3:13Speaker 5: it's like paycheck to paycheck. You know, I'm getting paid Friday,
- 3:16Speaker 5: and Thursday I'll be broke. I'll be down to ten
- 3:19Speaker 5: dollars maybe fifteen.
- 3:21Speaker 6: Is this how you expected the second Trump term to go?
- 3:24Speaker 7: Nope, not at all. I hoped it was going to
- 3:27Speaker 7: be so much better.
- 3:29Speaker 3: What were you expecting?
- 3:31Speaker 2: Instead?
- 3:32Speaker 7: I was hoping that gas was going to go down
- 3:36Speaker 7: so I could do something. You know, you can't do
- 3:40Speaker 7: anything with gas prices, and you just can't. You can't
- 3:47Speaker 7: afford to breathe at this point. What does it feel
- 3:50Speaker 7: like to be living in these conditions right now, in
- 3:53Speaker 7: these economic conditions right now, hurt, very hurt. I try
- 4:00Speaker 7: you do, Sorry, I cried. I try to do a
- 4:03Speaker 7: lot for my kids, and I can't do much.
- 4:07Speaker 2: President Trump promised knowing new foreign wars.
- 4:10Speaker 7: He promised lower gas prices, He promised to lower food prices.
- 4:16Speaker 4: How do you feel about those campaign promises right now?
- 4:18Speaker 8: He needs to get on them and get it done,
- 4:22Speaker 8: to start thinking of the little people instead of the
- 4:26Speaker 8: rich people.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Are you disappointed in him a little bit right now?
- 4:28Speaker 8: I am? I am, because their campaign promises, that's what
- 4:35Speaker 8: they need to be keeping, and they're not.
- 4:37Speaker 2: What do you make of all these prices right now?
- 4:40Speaker 9: I think that we need to end the war with
- 4:43Speaker 9: our brand and get these grasp prices and all the
- 4:46Speaker 9: stuff that we have to go by them reasonable. I
- 4:50Speaker 9: think everything is kind of all of hand now. I
- 4:56Speaker 9: like Trump, but I wish you quit changing his mind
- 4:58Speaker 9: every other day.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Voters are angry and Democrats know it.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Last night on this program, my colleague Eugene Daniels laid
- 5:07Speaker 1: out some key races the Democrats have turned into true
- 5:09Speaker 1: battleground contests.
- 5:11Speaker 2: In Georgia.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Keisha Lance Bottoms has a real shot at retaking that
- 5:15Speaker 1: state's governor's mansion for Democrats for the first time in
- 5:19Speaker 1: more than twenty years, and Georgia Senator John Ossoff is
- 5:23Speaker 1: winning Republicans' support in his fight to keep that critical
- 5:27Speaker 1: US Senate seat. Also helping Democrats in their fight to
- 5:30Speaker 1: retake the United States Senate is Iowa's Josh Turik, who
- 5:34Speaker 1: is statistically tied inside the margin of era in the
- 5:37Speaker 1: latest polling for the US Senate seat now open with.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Republican Senator Joni Ernst.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Retiring a Democratic Senator from Iowa is something no Republican
- 5:49Speaker 1: seriously considered possible when Donald Trump retook the White House
- 5:52Speaker 1: less than two years ago, and yet here we are,
- 5:57Speaker 1: in fact today, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the party's
- 6:01Speaker 1: only committees solely dedicated to electing a Democratic Senate, celebrated
- 6:06Speaker 1: the gains their Senate candidates are making. The organization put
- 6:09Speaker 1: out a press release state in quote. With less than
- 6:12Speaker 1: ninety days to go until the midterm elections, Republicans are
- 6:16Speaker 1: losing ground across the country as Democrats continue to go
- 6:19Speaker 1: on offense in key Senate battleground states, building momentum heading
- 6:24Speaker 1: toward November. Yesterday, analysts that inside elections shifted the Senate
- 6:28Speaker 1: contests in Georgia, Iowa, North Carolina, and Texas toward Democrats,
- 6:34Speaker 1: delivering a brutal snapshot of a GOP Senate map collapsing
- 6:38Speaker 1: in the final stretch. And in Michigan tonight, after a
- 6:43Speaker 1: tough primary this week, Democrats showed they remained united rather
- 6:49Speaker 1: than divided at a unity event.
- 6:53Speaker 10: In the spirit of unity, in the spirit of the work,
- 6:56Speaker 10: in the spirit of coming together. I think both of
- 7:01Speaker 10: my colleagues who ran, Haley Stevens and Mallory McMorrow for
- 7:06Speaker 10: an incredible race.
- 7:08Speaker 2: They're incredible public.
- 7:09Speaker 6: Service to the state of Michigan, and I cannot wait
- 7:13Speaker 6: to see what both of them will do next. We
- 7:15Speaker 6: are so blessed to have that caliber a public servant
- 7:19Speaker 6: here in Michigan.
- 7:22Speaker 1: But it isn't just the battleground states where Democrats are
- 7:25Speaker 1: putting up good candidates and forcing Republicans to answer for
- 7:28Speaker 1: them mess their party and its leader in the White
- 7:31Speaker 1: House have created. There are candidates out there doing the work,
- 7:35Speaker 1: knocking on doors, making their case and trying to create
- 7:39Speaker 1: the next political upset. Because you can't pull off a
- 7:42Speaker 1: surprize win if you don't run take Tennessee, not a
- 7:47Speaker 1: state exactly known for sending a lot of Democrats to
- 7:50Speaker 1: Congress these days. That's especially true after Republicans there yet
- 7:54Speaker 1: again Jerry mannered the state's election map this year, trying
- 7:58Speaker 1: to erase deemocratic House seat they can, And something surprising
- 8:04Speaker 1: happened last night. In Tennessee's newly redrawn fifth Congressional district,
- 8:09Speaker 1: Republican Congressman Andy Ogles, who was running for reelection with
- 8:13Speaker 1: Donald Trump's endorsement, became one of the few incumbents in
- 8:17Speaker 1: Tennessee history to ever be defeated in a primary. So now,
- 8:25Speaker 1: without an incumbent on the ticket, could a Democrat flip
- 8:29Speaker 1: that seat? Leading off our discussion tonight, is the Democrat
- 8:33Speaker 1: looking to do exactly that Columbia Tennessee Mayor Chaz Molder.
- 8:37Speaker 1: He is now the Democratic nominee for Tennessee's fifth congressional district.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Mister Merrin, thank you for coming to the last word.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Let's look at this.
- 8:46Speaker 2: New Jerry manderd map. It's a strange shape.
- 8:49Speaker 1: It includes a sliver of Tennessee's entire western border, including
- 8:53Speaker 1: part of Memphis, which Republicans sliced into three districts.
- 8:56Speaker 2: It then curves up.
- 8:58Speaker 1: In east before going south to include suburbs south of Nashville,
- 9:03Speaker 1: including Columbia where you're now there. That's part for all
- 9:07Speaker 1: of seventeen counties and a lot of different kinds of voters.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Mister mayor, what's your main message to them and what
- 9:15Speaker 1: are the top issues in this campaign?
- 9:20Speaker 4: Well, Jonathan, it's great to be with you, and you
- 9:22Speaker 4: know you mentioned the jerry mandering, and actually I would
- 9:24Speaker 4: call it a dummy mandering. What the legislature did by
- 9:27Speaker 4: changing the maps after the deadlines had already passed, is
- 9:31Speaker 4: created district that was really well suited for a guy
- 9:33Speaker 4: like me. I'm the mayor of my hometown and Columbia,
- 9:36Speaker 4: as you mentioned, But you can go to West Tennessee,
- 9:39Speaker 4: rural West Tennessee, where my wife's family is from and
- 9:41Speaker 4: we've been married for twenty years now, and you go
- 9:44Speaker 4: down to Memphis, which was really the direct target of
- 9:47Speaker 4: this jerry mandering.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Memphis is a community that I know.
- 9:50Speaker 4: I lived in Memphis while in law school, and so
- 9:52Speaker 4: in a lot of ways, this district was created for
- 9:54Speaker 4: a god just like me.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Trump's chosen candidate in this campaign, Commerceman Andy Ogles lost
- 10:01Speaker 1: a primary to the man who is now your opponent,
- 10:03Speaker 1: Charlie Hatcher, the state's former Agriculture commission commissioner and a
- 10:07Speaker 1: dairy farmer. Hatcher made a point to say he supports
- 10:11Speaker 1: Donald Trump despite not getting his endorsement. How much of
- 10:14Speaker 1: a factor is Donald Trump going to be in this campaign?
- 10:18Speaker 4: Well, the realities is Andy Ogles was defeated last night
- 10:21Speaker 4: because voters wanted something different. Andy Ogle's policies were on
- 10:25Speaker 4: the ballot last night, the policies that he supported, and
- 10:28Speaker 4: he was defeated. The reality also is is my opponent
- 10:31Speaker 4: supports those same policies that Andy Ogle's supported, and that
- 10:34Speaker 4: includes policies that are driving costs. It's heartbreaking to hear
- 10:37Speaker 4: the stories, the stories that you featured earlier tonight.
- 10:40Speaker 3: I'm seeing and hearing those on a daily basis.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Janthan, we set off on a seventeen county tour today
- 10:45Speaker 4: on the hills of last night's primary win, and we're
- 10:48Speaker 4: hearing those stories daily. But just spoke with a farmer
- 10:52Speaker 4: here in Dresden, Tennessee, where I am tonight, where we
- 10:54Speaker 4: ended our day, who is struggling and who said to
- 10:56Speaker 4: me that he doesn't want a government handout, He just
- 10:59Speaker 4: wants to be a to charge reasonable and fair prices
- 11:02Speaker 4: to the consumer.
- 11:03Speaker 3: So we're hearing that daily.
- 11:04Speaker 4: We know people are hurting, and our messages is we're
- 11:06Speaker 4: here to help and be an adult in the room
- 11:08Speaker 4: on important conversations as a mayor of how a front
- 11:11Speaker 4: row seat to the issues that matter, and those are
- 11:13Speaker 4: the issues is. We're sitting around the kitchen table tonight
- 11:15Speaker 4: and we're talking about kitchen table issues and that's really
- 11:18Speaker 4: resonating with the voters out in this newly jerrymandered fifth
- 11:20Speaker 4: congressional district.
