- 0:00Welcome to the Curve Weekly, the podcast that keeps you up to date with all of the money

- 0:06Brought to you by the Curve's research team that's the latest insights on what's happening
- 0:09in the stock market, companies, other money related news so that you can stay educated and
- 0:14ahead of the curve.
- 0:15You can thank us later for sounding smarter than those finance bros you need to know, Puddy.
- 0:19Before we get into this episode, we have a very important PSA.
- 0:24Excuse me, excuse me, everyone, excuse me.
- 0:27We don't have an editor for this podcast.
- 0:31So excuse all the shuffling, terrible chat, drilling silence.
- 0:37Of course we get someone drilling next door on the one podcast we don't need it, but yes,
- 0:41we apologise.
- 0:42It's still a good episode, there's lots of interesting research, but yeah, just be with
- 0:45us.
- 0:46It's quite funny.
- 0:47I actually almost feel like maybe people will say, keep it like that.
- 0:50I kind of want to listen to it.
- 0:52Same.
- 0:53I feel like I'll be like, oh, Vic, you say likes, aren't you?
- 0:55Anyway.
- 0:56There are some great content.
- 0:57They say something.
- 0:58Do you want to do a bit of what are some of the things we talk about?
- 1:01We talk about a company that's hit four trillion dollars, which is just wild.
- 1:06We talk about Wimbledon and other sports where they do or don't pay women in men the same.
- 1:13We talked about interest rates and the teller and cornflakes and fruit loops.
- 1:19And lastly, we talked about Alvie Mage.
- 1:23We're going to work on your promoting each story off the mic, interest rates and isolation.
- 1:29It's not sound very exciting, but it tries me, it is fun.
- 1:32We love interest rates.
- 1:33Oh, God.
- 1:34Okay, here is the episode.
- 1:37It's been two weeks since I did a Curve Weekly, which is the biggest break I've ever had
- 1:41from this podcast.
- 1:43Feels really weird.
- 1:44Or maybe over Christmas and stuff.
- 1:46No, last week you did it by yourself and a week before you didn't do one.
- 1:49Wow.
- 1:50We're really slacking off.
- 1:51Sorry.
- 1:52We're like, do we feel like doing a podcast?
- 1:54We're like, oh, maybe.
- 1:56But also, it's quite the opposite.
- 1:58It's quite the opposite.
- 1:59Like, we are so under the parmin.
- 2:01Yeah.
- 2:02Yeah.
- 2:03But this episode is not going to be edited, so no pressure.
- 2:06No, if sports or maybe, no.
- 2:08Oh, that's fine.
- 2:09Yeah.
- 2:10I think it's fine.
- 2:11Basically, long story short.
- 2:12Here is the now amazing producer Emily is on the rail trail.
- 2:14She's like, going through Europe and let's just say we're falling to this with that.
- 2:19We're like, it's fine.
- 2:20You go away.
- 2:21We'll be totally fine.
- 2:22So we're off.
- 2:23Go for it.
- 2:24I mean, first week.
- 2:25And we're like, oh, come back.
- 2:28So I just am not editing this.
- 2:30This is going to be uploaded fully.
- 2:32Do you know what I actually thought?
- 2:33So the poor thing, like I've got her passport stolen everything.
- 2:36I was like, oh, she's going to have to come home.
- 2:38I thought so many.
- 2:39I was going to be like, well, if you want to come back, you're leaving.
- 2:42You're welcome.
- 2:43Sorry.
- 2:44I was like, well, I'll come home.
- 2:46I was like, you want to come home.
- 2:47She's like, sucks.
- 2:48Doesn't it get back to work?
- 2:50That is so funny.
- 2:51I thought he's sex.
- 2:52I was like, I'm going to be really like, oh, that sucks.
- 2:55But now I'm fine.
- 2:56We're like, yeah, no.
- 2:58Years.
- 2:59Anyway, God.
- 3:00I did listen to your episode that you did by yourself.
- 3:02Was it hard?
- 3:03Yeah.
- 3:04I did it three times.
- 3:05No, I mean, aside from the technicals, don't you find talking to yourself quite hard?
- 3:12Like I think it's one of the most difficult, like if I think about radio and doing a show
- 3:17by yourself, it's really hard to sound natural and not be talking to anyone.
- 3:22Like I listened and I was like, go back.
- 3:24This is really impressive.
- 3:25I think what I missed was the tangents.
- 3:28Yeah.
- 3:29Well, it's like, and so I just felt like I was boring everyone with finance news, because I
- 3:33was like, oh, and next up we have, you know, there was no segue.
- 3:37There was no going release.
- 3:40I know.
- 3:41We just need to come with a jingle or something.
- 3:44We actually should.
- 3:45I know music that does so many times.
- 3:47From the next to the next.
- 3:48That's a great idea.
- 3:49It's quite funny seeing you squirm, though.
- 3:51But yeah, no, it was, I was like, Alex Cooper does this.
- 3:54Come on back.
- 3:55You can do it.
- 3:56You also wore your hoodie.
- 3:57I was like, need to be relaxed.
- 3:59Need to really get into it.
- 4:02Yeah.
- 4:03There also wasn't a lot of news either, which I was like, didn't do anything.
- 4:07Anyway, this week there is lots.
- 4:09Which is great.
- 4:10I do have a story that I need to tell you before we get into this.
- 4:14I just had this moment of like, I'm a full blonde finance bro this week.
- 4:18So I've just recently got back into yoga.
- 4:21And it's like, just for context as well.
- 4:24When I lived in Bondi, I went like morning and night.
- 4:27I lived right next to a studio.
- 4:28That's really original living in Bondi, doing yoga.
- 4:31Oh, I know.
- 4:32Cocaine in the weekends.
- 4:33And then just Monday to Friday doing yoga.
- 4:34That's how I'm going to go to Palin B.
- 4:36Green Joe's teacher's training.
- 4:37Oh, yeah.
- 4:38And I literally did that as well.
- 4:41But this week I've like found a new studio right by my house.
- 4:45I'm like, perfect.
- 4:46It's a quick wonder from home.
- 4:48Like, it's not a major.
- 4:49If you've lived in, are you going to cough?
- 4:51Because this is going to be in the unit.
- 4:52Thank you.
- 4:53When you're just like trying to swallow your cough.
- 4:56Go on.
- 4:57Have a cough.
- 4:58Just do it away from the microphone.
- 5:00Nice.
- 5:01So, so yeah, anyway.
- 5:04If you've lived in London before.
- 5:06I really like your shit, by the way.
- 5:08Do you?
- 5:09Yeah.
- 5:10Thank you.
- 5:11It's actually a dish number.
- 5:12No.
- 5:13They're great.
- 5:14They're so good.
- 5:15It's really good quality.
- 5:16It's thick.
- 5:17It's like a nice shape.
- 5:19It's really not expensive.
- 5:20Yeah.
- 5:21Every time I find something on Instagram.
- 5:22I'm like, oh, that's cool skirt.
- 5:23It's a dish.
- 5:24It's a dish.
- 5:25Yeah.
- 5:26Did you guys really good stuff?
- 5:27Are they public?
- 5:28No.
- 5:29Damn.
- 5:30I love that you knew that already.
- 5:32Okay, back to my yoga story.
- 5:33So, when you live in London, getting transport around.
- 5:36I mean, for me, I find more stressful than others.
- 5:39So, anyway, I've got this place right by my house.
- 5:41I'm going all the time now, like most mornings, which is great.
- 5:44Anyway, the other day, I was in a yoga class.
- 5:48And you fell asleep?
- 5:50I did.
- 5:51Yesterday, I fell asleep in yoga class.
- 5:52I went to yoga class with you.
- 5:54And it was like a Sunday afternoon, yeah.
- 5:57And you were just killed up in a fetus, the whole class.
- 6:00I was like, I was like, um, we were doing lots of, like, other moves.
- 6:05We moved on to the next move.
- 6:06And she was just killed up.
- 6:07So, you've just paid $30 to lie here in a room.
- 6:11To be fair.
- 6:12I was like, good nap, I would pay for.
- 6:14Yeah.
- 6:15Um, I was like, do I awake?
- 6:17Do I?
- 6:18Is this, because you're way more advanced, you know,
- 6:20is there some kind of advanced yoga to me?
- 6:23No, absolutely not.
- 6:25I did fall asleep yesterday and you're also.
- 6:27However, this wasn't like a vinyasa class.
- 6:29Anyway, I'm going to get to the point.
- 6:31It's like faster moving.
- 6:32Anyway, I hate those arms.
- 6:33I like them.
- 6:34I like them.
- 6:35I'm still like trying to do the move 10 moves ago.
- 6:37And they're like, and up and down and round.
- 6:39Not power yoga.
- 6:40I hate power yoga as well.
- 6:41Yeah.
- 6:42But it's, anyway, it's more like strength building, I guess.
- 6:44Anyway, point is, sorry.
- 6:45Often you don't find many men in yoga.
- 6:48Like it's, it's normally women in a yoga class.
- 6:51Anyway, this new studio, because there's, why do you think that is?
- 6:56I think it's a combination of most guys hate any kind of introspection.
- 7:01And sorry for anyone that's listening to this.
- 7:03It's a guy, and you're like, if you, I actually do that.
- 7:07But I think blanket statement is most women, like even going to like retreats with yoga teacher trainings.
- 7:14It's hardly ever any guys.
- 7:16I think it's a combo of that.
- 7:18Like, this is boring and slow and like, I don't want to be in my head.
- 7:22And then second, I think representation is hardly any male teachers.
- 7:26So I think a lot of guys may be feel intimidated by how many women there are.
- 7:30Which I get.
- 7:31I totally get that.
- 7:33And so this teacher is a guy, the one that I've found though, really like.
- 7:36So I think more men come to the class, which is really cool.
- 7:39Anyway, there was this guy in the class who was so good.
- 7:44I've never seen a guy be that flexible and strong and good at yoga.
- 7:48I was really impressed.
- 7:50Anyway.
- 7:51Was he hot?
- 7:52He was quite hot.
- 7:53I mean, at the end of the class, I was really shouldn't yoga.
- 7:56No, he's amazing.
- 7:57I was like, wow, that is so impressive.
- 7:59Anyway, we spoke after class.
- 8:02I just had this absolute moment of thinking, holy shit, I'm a finance bro.
- 8:07Like, basically for context, we started talking about what we both did for work, blah, blah, blah.
- 8:12And I said, I mentioned the curve.
- 8:14And then I fully misheard him.
- 8:16I thought he said, what investments do you have?
- 8:20So I started talking about my investments.
- 8:24What did he say?
- 8:25I was being like, actually just bought an investment property with a friend of mine and like,
- 8:29listing him off.
- 8:30And he was like, oh, that's really cool.
- 8:31But that's not what I was asking.
- 8:32I died.
- 8:33I was like, I want to crawl into a house.
- 8:36He asked.
- 8:37He asked if we have investors in our business.
- 8:40And I just fully misheard it and started listing off my portfolio.
- 8:44And I thought, I can see you.
- 8:46No, so embarrassing.
- 8:47Like, I'm invested in Tesla and the stock market and the house.
- 8:51I was like, oh, shitballs.
- 8:53I'm like, I'm that girl who made me drop out of her hair forms to talk about a lane.
- 9:00We're a sign.
- 9:01We're a bit.
- 9:02Oh, God.
- 9:03I just thought not cool for me.
- 9:05Anyway, I was funny when I did last week's podcast.
- 9:08The first time I recorded it.
- 9:10I said, so Sophie's now bought a house.
- 9:12So she doesn't need the podcast anymore.
- 9:14She's on our two fake financials.
- 9:16She's gone.
- 9:17A little gig.
- 9:18Oh, God.
- 9:20Well, good you got it in there again because it wasn't in the episode we released.
- 9:24Before we get into the episode, I just have one more quick thing.
- 9:30So our social media girl, Arabella, is finishing up because we need someone who's based in the UK now.
- 9:35And on our time zone, if you know anyone amazing at social media in the UK, let us know.
- 9:41But I just want to switch out to her and her amazing business that she actually does.
- 9:46Honey Bloom.
- 9:47Honey Bloom.
- 9:48The next class I'm wearing.
- 9:49And that's got one too.
- 9:50They're amazing.
- 9:51So if you would like to check them out.
- 9:52But I do wear it.
- 9:53Yeah, yeah.
- 9:54They're really cool.
- 9:55I like your one.
- 9:56Same.
- 9:57Do you have a few?
- 9:58Yeah.
- 9:59I've got a couple.
- 10:00Yeah.
- 10:01I love them.
- 10:02Yeah.
- 10:03So cute, very cute.
- 10:04They're summer.
- 10:05Yeah.
- 10:06They're summer time.
- 10:07Also a good investment, I feel.
- 10:08Like something like this that you can wear in the shower.
- 10:09We're in the beach.
- 10:10They're a good price point.
- 10:11Yeah.
- 10:12Anyway, we'll link it in the podcast.
- 10:13It's just as a cute little shout out to her.
- 10:17But, and actually that's something I thought we could do in our email newsletter.
- 10:21It's like shout out to small businesses.
- 10:22I see lots of other people doing that.
- 10:24It's kind of nice just to support other female founder businesses.
- 10:27Yeah.
- 10:28I actually, someone in our community started a magnesium business.
- 10:33And it was like, I'd love to give you a big sum.
- 10:36Are you pleased?
- 10:37I know.
- 10:38And I forgot to give it to you.
- 10:39I just realized.
- 10:40Sorry.
- 10:41You see my desk.
- 10:42I have so many pills.
- 10:43And I just always forget to take them.
- 10:45This is a foot spray.
- 10:46You put on your foot.
- 10:47You put a bed.
- 10:48Oh, okay.
- 10:49Like winds you down.
- 10:50I just.
- 10:51Yeah.
- 10:52I'm the same.
- 10:53I get really excited.
- 10:54And I have all these beautiful vitamins and supplements.
- 10:56Yeah.
- 10:57You have to get in such a good routine.
- 10:58Yeah.
- 10:59Or it's just, or I'll get really tired or stressed.
- 11:03So then buy some like stress pills.
- 11:05Like burnout or whatever.
- 11:07But like get them and then be not remember to take them.
- 11:11Like I have been tensioned and I buy them.
- 11:13I'm having shit state.
- 11:14Like I'll buy magnesium and I'll buy it.
- 11:16And then I have it for like the first two nights and then completely.
- 11:18I'm so surprised you do that.
- 11:20I saw the kind of thing I did.
- 11:21I wouldn't have thought you did.
- 11:22I think there's just too many in the morning.
- 11:24It's like.
- 11:25You need to have a stack.
- 11:26Yeah.
- 11:27You know, do it after something.
- 11:28Yeah.
- 11:29That's why they have it at work.
- 11:31So then I'm just sitting there.
- 11:32I'm like, oh my.
- 11:33Okay.
- 11:35Yeah.
- 11:36Remember, this is not edited.
- 11:37And we've been speaking for way too long about absolute crap.
- 11:40So let's get on to those.
- 11:42That's fine.
- 11:43That's normal.
- 11:44Okay.
- 11:45Yeah.
- 11:46But normally we cut it out.
- 11:47I mean, everyone wants to know that I don't take my pills.
- 11:54Speaking of nothing related to pills.
- 11:56Yeah.
- 11:57Nice.
- 11:58Good segue.
- 11:59Stunning segue.
- 12:00Well done.
- 12:02We have a $4 trillion company on the US stock market.
- 12:08$4 trillion.
- 12:09No.
- 12:11This is the biggest company.
- 12:13There's ever been on the stock exchange.
- 12:15Really?
- 12:16Bigger than Apple.
- 12:17Apple.
- 12:18Apple only ever got to $3.9 trillion.
- 12:19Oh god.
- 12:20I know.
- 12:21It is such a big swing.
- 12:22Can you guess what company it is?
- 12:24In video.
- 12:26Use for my knowledge.
- 12:27I know.
- 12:28Sorry.
- 12:30Do you know when I saw this?
- 12:31I thought, this is just such a good example of holding things for a long period of time.
- 12:36Totally.
- 12:37Like bloody sold it.
- 12:38Yeah.
- 12:39And I knew I thought to myself, this is quite stupid.
- 12:42Because this is one of those companies that I really think.
- 12:45It's ingrained in AI.
- 12:46It's the little.
- 12:47So for anyone that doesn't know, they do the chips basically.
- 12:50So it's almost like the foundation in AI.
- 12:52It's a special special chips for AI.
- 12:54And they're like super premium and like super powerful.
- 12:58Yeah.
- 12:59Anyway, it's up 40% since May.
- 13:02So what do we draw?
- 13:04Wow.
- 13:05Yeah.
- 13:06I could be thinking.
- 13:07It's up 40%.
- 13:08Yeah.
- 13:09And if you think like in April.
- 13:10I'm going to see when I sold it and look how much I would have made.
- 13:12I got flour man in May.
- 13:14Did you?
- 13:15Yeah.
- 13:16Oh my god.
- 13:17So he's had a little fun.
- 13:18And I'm like, I'm like, look darling.
- 13:20I am so good at investing.
- 13:21You look darling.
- 13:22Yeah.
- 13:24You look in and have a little look.
- 13:27It was a lot of luck in the air as well.
- 13:30But the reason it has done so well in such a short space of time is because Trump effectively came out
- 13:36and said they're exempt from the tariffs.
- 13:38So everyone was like, oh awesome.
- 13:39Okay.
- 13:40We'll pile back in.
- 13:41Why?
- 13:42Why they exempt?
- 13:43Because Trump is Trump.
- 13:44Where are they from?
- 13:46Where are they from?
- 13:48There.
- 13:49It's a try.
- 13:51Yeah.
- 13:52It's they get the chips made in China but they're a US company.
- 13:55They're listed on the US stock exchange.
- 13:57But anyway, it's, I mean, Trump's Trump, right?
- 14:00He can just pick and choose.
- 14:01Oh, you're exempt.
- 14:02You're exempt.
- 14:03Anyway.
- 14:04But it just was like such herd mentality, you know?
- 14:07Like people that had invested in the video for such a long time.
- 14:10I'm pretty sure you're saying it wrong by the way.
- 14:12In video.
- 14:13In video.
- 14:14Not in the video.
- 14:15It's in the video.
- 14:16Yeah.
- 14:17So people that invested in them for a long time will be absolutely clapping.
- 14:24It shot the lights out of, as Vic would say.
- 14:26Yeah.
- 14:27But like people that sold in April when the stock market was falling.
- 14:29That's literally when I sold.
- 14:31This is exact.
- 14:32Sophie.
- 14:33Well, to be fair, the only reason I did sell is because I needed to use the money.
- 14:37So it wasn't, it wasn't that I, and also it was before it sold.
- 14:41I'm pretty sure.
- 14:42I'm just trying to check now.
- 14:43Before it's, before it.
- 14:44Yeah.
- 14:45Like I think it was like sort of, I don't know.
- 14:47I just had this feeling.
- 14:48But I want to put this 4 trillion in perspective.
- 14:49Because you know when you sit down, I have 4 trillion, 1 billion.
- 14:52You know, I can say, well, how much is that?
- 14:55And 4 billion dollars is, sorry, 4 trillion dollars.
- 15:03We can't eat it that much.
- 15:05I know.
- 15:06Shit.
- 15:07When I'm dealing with numbers.
- 15:094 trillion is 4,000 billion dollars.
- 15:13Or 4 million million dollars.
- 15:17But here, I'll put, I'll use some other in other analogies.
- 15:20If you spend a million dollars every single day, it would take you 11,000 years to spend 4 trillion.
- 15:28A million every day.
- 15:29A million every day.
- 15:304,000 years.
- 15:314,000, 11,000 years.
- 15:32Oh.
- 15:33Shit.
- 15:34That's a lot of money.
- 15:36What would you do with a million a day?
- 15:38Oh.
- 15:39I don't know.
- 15:40You probably would be easily run out.
- 15:43Like, not run out.
- 15:44But do you think if you're on a, I mean, like, give me a target.
- 15:46And I'll make it happen.
- 15:47Do you know what I mean?
- 15:48I think like South Creek, you could definitely.
- 15:51I mean, I'd be incredibly generous.
- 15:53I would just be buying everyone I know.
- 15:55I'd be generous on like Monday Wednesday Friday.
- 15:58To be honest, that's one of the main reasons I want to have more financial security.
- 16:02I feel so good when I'm.
- 16:05I'm just look here.
- 16:06You've got a nice old.
- 16:07Oh, this is devastating.
- 16:09Look at this.
- 16:10That's when I sold.
- 16:12Oh.
- 16:13That's.
- 16:14Oh, no hold on.
- 16:15Is that when I sold here?
- 16:17Yeah.
- 16:18So, did I?
- 16:19Is that the little dot?
- 16:20Is that where I sold?
- 16:21Yes.
- 16:22No, the dot moves.
- 16:23What?
- 16:24There, that.
- 16:25You don't think that's when I sold?
- 16:26You have to look at your transactions.
- 16:28Go back.
- 16:29Get go out.
- 16:30Yeah.
- 16:31And go to your wallet.
- 16:34I think.
- 16:35Well, I'm sorry.
- 16:37This is not going to be just down here.
- 16:39Yeah, this is really fun.
- 16:40But I really want to know when I left it up.
- 16:42Down there.
- 16:43Yeah.
- 16:44You see, in the video somewhere.
- 16:45In the video?
- 16:46Yeah.
- 16:47Yeah.
- 16:48What, I'm click on that.
- 16:49What price?
- 16:50Price per unit.
- 16:51One, four, two.
- 16:52And it is at.
- 16:54Oh, I'm scared.
- 16:55Oh, my gosh.
- 16:59I think mine.
- 17:01I just want to see it.
- 17:02Like, I really like it.
- 17:03One, six, four.
- 17:04Well, that's not too bad.
- 17:05No.
- 17:06And then when did I buy it?
- 17:08One, four.
- 17:09You see when you bought it?
- 17:10One, four, two.
- 17:11You would have sold.
- 17:12Like, only June?
- 17:13Oh, no, you would have.
- 17:14Yeah, it was only like a month ago.
- 17:16Oh, yeah.
- 17:17Easy.
- 17:18June.
- 17:19Is it? Well, yeah.
- 17:20I mean, you missed out on some gains, but yeah.
- 17:21That's right.
- 17:22But anyway, I want to keep putting this in perspective.
- 17:24Yeah, tell me.
- 17:25If you had a dollar,
- 17:30don't pause for that long.
- 17:31No, I'm not going to say this.
- 17:32Thank you.
- 17:33Thank you.
- 17:34So I'll put this out.
- 17:36Another perspective.
- 17:38The UK's entire economy
- 17:41is worth over $3 trillion, just over $3 trillion.
- 17:44So NVIDIA is bigger than the entire UK.
- 17:48So I think of all the companies in the UK put together.
- 17:51Four trillion is also, if you gave every person on Earth,
- 17:57$500.
- 18:00That's how much four trillion is.
- 18:02There's eight billion people on this planet.
- 18:04So imagine if NVIDIA just goes, you know what?
- 18:06We're going to close up shop and we're going to give everybody
- 18:09$500 in the world.
- 18:10God, that'd be great for you.
- 18:12I know.
- 18:13Yeah.
- 18:14Well, investors would be.
- 18:15I'd be pissed off.
- 18:16I'm an investor.
- 18:17I'd be like, no, no.
- 18:18Excuse me.
- 18:19I'd be stoked.
- 18:22Anyway.
- 18:23I'm actually, I haven't done too badly.
- 18:25Like, if I look at that graph or not,
- 18:27I'll have into my books.
- 18:28I can't take that out either.
- 18:30I've turned it on.
- 18:31Please not.
- 18:32Hello.
- 18:34That's not your ball stroke.
- 18:36Sorry.
- 18:37That was so scary.
- 18:40I kind of liked how it sounded though.
- 18:42Same.
- 18:43It was kind of way sexy.
- 18:44When you're a big artist.
- 18:45Second.
- 18:47But yeah, if I look at that, I mean, it's not ideal,
- 18:49but I bought, oh no, so I kind of bought and sold
- 18:51at the same price.
- 18:52No, I can really see what we're looking at.
- 18:53Sorry.
- 18:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:55Sorry.
- 18:56But the point here is businesses like this,
- 18:59when they've got such market share
- 19:01and they've been around for so long.
- 19:03And they're in a really good space, right?
- 19:05It's the AI space.
- 19:07Yes, it's done phenomenally well, but it is the market leader.
- 19:10We've got so much room to go in terms of growth in AI.
- 19:15Like, I just think this is such a classic example
- 19:18of sometimes doing nothing and just holding on,
- 19:22actually, doing nothing and holding on is best.
- 19:27It would be really great to know a step
- 19:29around the difference between how many times
- 19:32is it good to hold on first, just be like, bye.
- 19:35Oh, there's so much research.
- 19:36It's probably research that says,
- 19:37if you try and trade and time the market,
- 19:40it's absolutely terrible.
- 19:41Whereas if you just hold by and hold,
- 19:43like Warren Buffett does,
- 19:44just spend the time finding good quality companies
- 19:48buying them and just...
- 19:49See, I think I'm such a good trader.
- 19:54No, okay, like, seriously.
- 19:56I...
- 19:57I mean, I don't mean to roll my eyes.
- 19:59No, but I feel like I've made such great returns though.
- 20:02Yeah.
- 20:03I had this good.
- 20:04There's great.
- 20:05Like, if I look at what I've had
- 20:06from a return perspective,
- 20:08most of the...
- 20:09I mean, I'm not trading, like, buying something I'm telling.
- 20:12But I think if you're across what's happening in the world,
- 20:15it's more buying win low rather than selling win high.
- 20:18That's what I do.
- 20:19And the markets reached new highs and new highs right now.
- 20:22And I'm getting to the point where I'm like,
- 20:23I kind of want to build up a bit of a bigger amount of just, like,
- 20:30money that I can put aside so that I can take advantage
- 20:33of things that fall.
- 20:34You know, when the market starts doing really, really well,
- 20:37that's when I'm like, okay,
- 20:39yes, I'm still investing consistently and regularly
- 20:41and, you know, monthly amount.
- 20:43But I also just want to start building.
- 20:46Yeah.
- 20:47Like, you're marked money that you can put into it when you start.
- 20:49Yeah.
- 20:50Like, for example, if India came out and said,
- 20:52and there was some weird news that came out that said,
- 20:56I don't know what some stupid thing that could happen to AI.
- 20:58Well, no, it's more like if the whole market, right?
- 21:00Like, it's not...
- 21:01It's more like if the tariffs come out and something else
- 21:05happens and it drops for a couple of days.
- 21:07And since I'm going to tax all companies,
- 21:10an extra 10%, you know,
- 21:12they will make the stock market fall.
- 21:14And then he'll probably come out and be like,
- 21:16just joking, you know.
- 21:17Well, that's what happened three months ago.
- 21:19Yeah.
- 21:20And because I had money and marked,
- 21:22I was able to do that.
- 21:23Yeah.
- 21:24We also have quite an important sport this weekend.
- 21:27I know.
- 21:28And your goal is...
- 21:29I know.
- 21:30Are you excited?
- 21:31I am so first.
- 21:32What are you wearing?
- 21:33Oh, I've got a plan.
- 21:34I bet you do.
- 21:35It's white.
- 21:36It's a milk.
- 21:37Buttermilk.
- 21:38A buttermilk dress.
- 21:39Is that yellow?
- 21:40Kind of, yeah.
- 21:41What does it look like?
- 21:42It's like a light yellow.
- 21:43It's a Harris-tapper number.
- 21:44What does it look like?
- 21:45It's like...
- 21:46Just kind of a plain dress.
- 21:48With a silk?
- 21:49Yep.
- 21:50With like low heels.
- 21:51Have I seen it?
- 21:52No.
- 21:53Yeah.
- 21:54On the sea, you are selling drugs on the side or something.
- 21:57Like, where on earth do you get your money on?
- 21:59Just because I know how much you're earning.
- 22:02I'm like, how are you buying this?
- 22:03Where is this coming from?
- 22:05Yeah.
- 22:06In a bag and sunnies and like...
- 22:08Yeah.
- 22:09I was talking about this later.
- 22:10I'm so excited.
- 22:11It's 30 degrees though.
- 22:12It's going to be a long day.
- 22:13I'm excited for the strawberries and cream.
- 22:14What's that?
- 22:15It's like a Wimbledon thing.
- 22:17Sorry?
- 22:18The strawberries and cream.
- 22:19I have no idea what you're talking about.
- 22:20Strawberries?
- 22:21Like an actual snack?
- 22:22Or is it a band?
- 22:23Yeah, sorry.
- 22:24Yeah, yeah, it's a snack.
- 22:25I was like, have you never heard of strawberries?
- 22:27Yeah, no, no.
- 22:28But I was just like, what do you mean?
- 22:30Like, it's not like peaches and cream.
- 22:31It's not like...
- 22:32It's extra.
- 22:33Yeah, no, it's not extra.
- 22:34So...
- 22:35But you go the...
- 22:36It's the snack that you get.
- 22:37Yeah.
- 22:38Wimbledon's like, no one for you.
- 22:39You go there and you get your strawberries and cream.
- 22:40Have you been before?
- 22:41No.
- 22:42I'm so excited.
- 22:43I've been trying to go like for the last three years.
- 22:45Is it because you can't get tickets?
- 22:46It's so hard to get tickets.
- 22:47Really?
- 22:48You go into a ballot so you can get pulled out of a ballot.
- 22:50And they just...
- 22:51You go into the ballot like a year beforehand.
- 22:54Or you can camp.
- 22:55People camp out.
- 22:56It's like...
- 22:57People pitch tents and stuff.
- 22:59They give a whole bunch of tickets out for it to the public.
- 23:02Or...
- 23:03Sorry.
- 23:04It's unso rude.
- 23:05But I really would have not fought the people that want to go to Wimbledon,
- 23:08a people that would camp for tickets.
- 23:10Well, there's obviously you can pay for like...
- 23:13There's a certain allocation that is effectively free.
- 23:16Oh, sorry.
- 23:17Oh, that's quite cool.
- 23:19Yeah.
- 23:20But you have to get there like...
- 23:21You either camp overnight or you get there at like 4am.
- 23:24It's really intense.
- 23:26I couldn't have done anything.
- 23:28I don't think there's anything I would camp out like that for.
- 23:31No.
- 23:32You see people camping out for like new release sneakers and shit.
- 23:35I'm like, I'm sorry.
- 23:36I'm kind of...
- 23:37I feel good on you for loving something that much that you're willing to dedicate to.
- 23:41Last night.
- 23:42Or when you see dads like camping out with their daughters to get to the front of like...
- 23:46You could.
- 23:47I would do it.
- 23:48If I had a kid that was absolutely obsessed with something.
- 23:51I would do it.
- 23:52But for myself, I can't...
- 23:53I was going to say last night...
- 23:55My flat man night.
- 23:56There's this really delicious gelato and ice cream place just down the road from my house.
- 24:00And we like trotted down at like 8.30 after dinner.
- 24:03And there's always a cure, always.
- 24:06But I've had it before and I know how good it is.
- 24:08And I was standing in there and I said to her,
- 24:10there's not a lot that I would wait and acute like this.
- 24:12For like problems like...
- 24:13Like the scenery.
- 24:14So that's kind of it.
- 24:15Yeah.
- 24:16Yeah.
- 24:17I love a good ice cream.
- 24:18I probably just struggled with lines.
- 24:20Anyway, what is happening financially with Wimbledon?
- 24:23So don't do that.
- 24:25Why?
- 24:26Because you're doing a throat clear in someone's ears.
- 24:29Sorry.
- 24:30I needed to clear my throat though.
- 24:31I know.
- 24:32But next time just go...
- 24:33Oh.
- 24:34You've got to pull your microphone away.
- 24:36So...
- 24:37The tournament...
- 24:39I was doing some research.
- 24:40Actually pays women and men the same prize money.
- 24:44So I was like, who?
- 24:45Go Wimbledon.
- 24:46All the big tennis tournaments do now, which is fantastic.
- 24:49But the prize fund is...
- 24:53Sorry, but can you tell me when I have harmed hair?
- 24:55Oh yeah.
- 24:56Like that's really shit form for me.
- 24:58It's like spinach.
- 24:59Sorry, I'll tell you.
- 25:00I'm trying to concentrate on that.
- 25:01I just looked in the mirror.
- 25:02Sorry.
- 25:03So distracting.
- 25:04But I was like...
- 25:05Could you just be like, oh, fix that?
- 25:06Like if you had a giant horn on your hair, I'd tell you.
- 25:08I didn't even...
- 25:09Sorry.
- 25:10Continue.
- 25:11The tournament has a prize pool of 50 million pounds.
- 25:17So that's like over 100 million New Zealand dollars.
- 25:20Which is...
- 25:22Double the amount that it was 10 years ago.
- 25:25Yeah.
- 25:26The great thing is men and women get paid the same.
- 25:29So the men's final, the women's final, they get paid the same amount of prize money.
- 25:33Is that $3 million?
- 25:34Three million pounds each.
- 25:36Three million pounds per winner.
- 25:38So whoever wins the men's gets that, yeah.
- 25:41Is that because the demand for viewership is the same for men and women,
- 25:45like the amount of people that show up in my tickets.
- 25:47No.
- 25:48It's just...
- 25:49The men's final gets way more still.
- 25:52Ah, and the ticket surprised accordingly.
- 25:55You know, more people want to go see the men's final and the women's.
- 25:58But it's only been since 2007, which is actually quite recent.
- 26:02And so they've been paid equal...
- 26:04I was going to say that it's quite forward-thinking.
- 26:06Do you reckon?
- 26:07Yeah, I mean, it's 15 years ago.
- 26:09Yeah.
- 26:10Just thinking about how much disparity there is in other sports.
- 26:13Yeah.
- 26:14I mean, the US opens down it since 1970s.
- 26:17Oh, wow.
- 26:18Yeah.
- 26:19So what are the main sports then and not doing it?
- 26:21This is what I was researching.
- 26:23I was like, what other...
- 26:24Individual sports do not pay...
- 26:27Sorry, not other, because Tina stars.
- 26:30But I was like, what individual sports don't pay the same for men and women and golf?
- 26:34It's golf the number one.
- 26:38Do you know what's shared about theirs?
- 26:40It makes it.
- 26:41I mean, not that you need Curtis going to be thinking,
- 26:43what sport can I be paid the most in?
- 26:45But, you know, if you're a kid and you're thinking about that,
- 26:48well, thank you very much.
- 26:49But doesn't that just not surprise you?
- 26:51Yeah.
- 26:52Like there's such...
- 26:53Oh.
- 26:54Yeah.
- 26:55Honestly, if I'm dating and someone's into golf,
- 26:57it is hard to get past.
- 26:59It's just...
- 27:00Flownman plays quite a bit of golf, doesn't he?
- 27:02He does.
- 27:03Yeah.
- 27:04It's...
- 27:05I mean, he's been into golf now.
- 27:06Yeah, and it's crazy golf, but you don't...
- 27:08I don't know.
- 27:09You don't want to stifle someone's passion or like their interest, right?
- 27:12You don't...
- 27:13You can't play golf, because they'll just start resenting you.
- 27:15But obviously not.
- 27:16I'm just...
- 27:17Yeah.
- 27:18Just not saying it's not a panty dropper if someone tells you.
- 27:20They play golf, you know?
- 27:22And I told this to him as I was researching.
- 27:24I was like, did you know?
- 27:25Golf was on it.
- 27:26Anyway.
- 27:27So like the average salary in the PGA, which is like the big tour,
- 27:30is a million pounds for men, and it's 300,000.
- 27:33Oh.
- 27:34Sorry, it's a million dollars for men.
- 27:36I mean, it's the same, but it's 300.
- 27:38That's cool.
- 27:39So it's like a third.
- 27:40Less than a third.
- 27:41Ah, and...
- 27:43It's funny.
- 27:44He was like, well, you know what golf stands for.
- 27:46What does it stand for?
- 27:47Guys only ladies for a bit in.
- 27:48Oh.
- 27:49It's out.
- 27:50No, it's not.
- 27:52And actually heard that before, like years ago.
- 27:56I don't think it does.
- 27:58I think it's more people have come up with that.
- 28:00We have to get all that.
- 28:01No, people have come up with that.
- 28:02No, I've thought to get all that.
- 28:03I don't know if it was created to be like all day.
- 28:05I dream about sports, but...
- 28:07What does the word gold stand for?
- 28:13But there are still golf clubs around the world
- 28:15where you're not allowed woman.
- 28:17It's crazy.
- 28:18So backward.
- 28:19Again, played on a large...
- 28:22No, no, no.
- 28:23I mean, it doesn't come up.
- 28:24I feel like he's just taking the piss.
- 28:25It's like a piss joke.
- 28:26But anyway.
- 28:27Oh, no, hold on.
- 28:28It's...
- 28:29Oh, yeah, yeah, okay.
- 28:30So what is the acronym golf stand for?
- 28:32It is not an acronym for any...
- 28:34Okay, great.
- 28:35Perfect.
- 28:36Perfect, perfect.
- 28:37Woo!
- 28:38But yes, it's...
- 28:39I mean, it doesn't surprise me, right?
- 28:41I mean, I'm out of work deals that are done.
- 28:44Like, golf trips.
- 28:45You know, it is quite a...
- 28:47White man's choice.
- 28:48It's laddy.
- 28:49Yeah, it's very, very laddy.
- 28:50And...
- 28:51If anything, maybe that means we should take it up.
- 28:54Like, maybe we need to make it more feminine.
- 28:56Oh, definitely.
- 28:57Yeah.
- 28:58And go and get cute little skirt.
- 28:59But I just don't have eight hours in the weekend
- 29:01where I can piss off and play golf.
- 29:03What are you all doing?
- 29:04Also...
- 29:05I have that much time.
- 29:06Also, me trying to find four other female friends
- 29:08that could do that?
- 29:09No, we have lives.
- 29:10But maybe if we got into it, like, the idea of being in nature
- 29:13and wandering around and just chatting is quite fun.
- 29:16Yeah.
- 29:17I'm going to knock it any more until I've tried it.
- 29:19Yeah, anyway.
- 29:20But I'm also not going to need to, like, up your game
- 29:23in terms of paying women and men the same thing.
- 29:26I think the other thing that annoys me about golf
- 29:28is the fact that it is such a supreme sport
- 29:32in the sense that...
- 29:34Like, the golf courses, like having memberships at golf courses
- 29:39and, like, it's very unattainable for a lot of people.
- 29:42Yeah.
- 29:43Or it's kind of, like, sailing.
- 29:44Or, you know, it's that top-tier society
- 29:47that are able to care about it and buy tickets and go.
- 29:50Wimbledon's probably similar, right?
- 29:52Like, tennis?
- 29:53Yeah, but I feel like you could, you know,
- 29:55getting a tennis racket is not that true.
- 29:57Yeah, true.
- 29:58You know, like, getting a basketball,
- 29:59getting a soccer ball.
- 30:00Like, all of those, like...
- 30:01When did it make space?
- 30:02When did it make space?
- 30:03Yeah.
- 30:04But it's funny.
- 30:05I saw this meme and it was like,
- 30:06that was the only sport where all the spectators dress like
- 30:09the players.
- 30:11And then at this picture of the US Open and it was like
- 30:15all these old...
- 30:16Colin, Ralph Laurence.
- 30:17Yes.
- 30:18And these shorts were belts.
- 30:19And they've been in politics.
- 30:20And then the players are like,
- 30:23I was like, oh my god, who would...
- 30:24It's if you'd go to a basketball game,
- 30:26like, dressed as a basketball player.
- 30:27And imagine if the whole crowd was just...
- 30:29It's so like, want to be weird anyway.
- 30:31Yeah.
- 30:32Well, it's very like, old money, traditional.
- 30:35I met someone like this at a lunch the other day
- 30:38and I honestly could smell him from a mile away.
- 30:40It was like, the way he was dressed,
- 30:42the way he was talking,
- 30:43it was like, someone asked if he was...
- 30:47One of our friends that was at this lunch,
- 30:50he was like, oh, are you dating...
- 30:52What have I been pointed to a girl?
- 30:53And our friend was like, oh no, that's my husband over there.
- 30:56And honestly, he could not fathom the idea that this man
- 31:01was intamine.
- 31:02I was like, what is wrong with you?
- 31:05It is 2025.
- 31:06It just felt like, do you know what?
- 31:09This is so niche,
- 31:10and this is really a New Zealand reference,
- 31:11but it felt super Christchurch.
- 31:13Do you know what I mean?
- 31:14Sorry, I don't know.
- 31:15Oh, she was there.
- 31:16But it's true.
- 31:17It's like Christ College.
- 31:19It's what it is.
- 31:20It is.
- 31:21Sorry.
- 31:22Oh, yeah, true.
- 31:24Sorry.
- 31:25Sorry, Ian, you wanted to say something from Christ College.
- 31:27But it is.
- 31:28And we...
- 31:29We have Christchurch.
- 31:30She's nothing is the woman.
- 31:31She's nothing is the woman.
- 31:32I also do union Christchurch.
- 31:34But it's just like the...
- 31:35Sorry, I can't hear you.
- 31:36Yeah, I don't know.
- 31:37Absolutely.
- 31:38She's on one.
- 31:39But I wanted to say back to the tennis and the one wooden thing.
- 31:42The champion for equal pay with men and women was Venus Williams.
- 31:46And she championed it.
- 31:48She got it through in 2007.
- 31:50And then she was the one that went on to win.
- 31:53Oh.
- 31:54And she got the same pay,
- 31:57the same prize money as Roger Federer.
- 31:59And I was so cool.
- 32:00She probably said, look, I'm really good this year.
- 32:03I bet against high rise.
- 32:04I want to pay rise.
- 32:05I want the same.
- 32:06I was Roger Federer.
- 32:07I mean, me in the finals.
- 32:08So I'm, you know, it's quite good.
- 32:09You bet a penny the same.
- 32:10Yeah.
- 32:11Anyway.
- 32:12I'd love to know if anyone wants more sports money content.
- 32:16Yeah.
- 32:17Because it's like such.
- 32:18I would love to interview some...
- 32:19I'm going to have to reign in my attitude towards it.
- 32:21Yeah.
- 32:22Get some back golf.
- 32:23It's a more female golfing off.
- 32:24It's a more female golfing off.
- 32:25It's a more female golfing off.
- 32:27But I'd love to know like the pay disparity and like...
- 32:29Yeah.
- 32:30Like contracts and like how those discussions at effort
- 32:32is still very like men and women.
- 32:34And also, yeah, I don't know.
- 32:36Where the world's going or where they think the world's going
- 32:39in terms of like male and female sport.
- 32:41Because I think it's...
- 32:42Yeah.
- 32:43It's going to be interesting.
- 32:44Also how much we, or how we can support women's sport more.
- 32:47Like what does that look like?
- 32:48Is it showing up to games?
- 32:49Is it buying tickets?
- 32:50Yeah, yeah.
- 32:51Because, yeah.
- 32:52Yeah, yeah.
- 32:53I think I, I mean, I'd be quite keen to hear more.
- 32:55Maybe we'll put a poll in this podcast.
- 32:58Yeah.
- 32:59And just vote if you're interested in hearing more about this or not.
- 33:01Yeah.
- 33:02It's quite helpful when people vote.
- 33:03Yeah.
- 33:04Because you don't want to go and produce like a whole mini series
- 33:06on like golf and money.
- 33:07Something that we want.
- 33:08I mean, not golf and money.
- 33:09No one panic.
- 33:10But like sport and money.
- 33:11And then, you know,
- 33:14not in lessons.
- 33:15Do you remember what I did?
- 33:16Party at my house.
- 33:17Put one.
- 33:18And...
- 33:19Put one.
- 33:20Well, you used to do heaps of...
- 33:21I know, invite everyone back to my house.
- 33:24And London or...
- 33:25And they were like, oh my goodness.
- 33:26Is this where the curve records its podcast?
- 33:28Oh my god.
- 33:29We recorded some...
- 33:32And if I was in there drunk, like talking,
- 33:34and we pressed record.
- 33:36And...
- 33:37Can I just say the context?
- 33:38Because when you talk into a microphone and you have headphones on
- 33:40and you hear what it sounds like,
- 33:42it's actually...
- 33:43Quite cool.
- 33:44It's quite cool.
- 33:45So I understand.
- 33:46You were on a radio show.
- 33:47Yeah.
- 33:48And what you're saying is very important.
- 33:49And so anyway, we're all in there like...
- 33:52And then they kind of...
- 33:53Our friends started talking and like...
- 33:55Talking about a podcast and what's up.
- 33:57Oh my god.
- 33:58I forgot about it.
- 33:59Yes.
- 34:00About golf and like...
- 34:01Anyway, we pressed record.
- 34:02And then then on Monday,
- 34:03you were put in the SD card.
- 34:04Why did...
- 34:05Anyway, we listened to it and...
- 34:06And...
- 34:07And criminating.
- 34:08And criminating.
- 34:09You know, any of these people are running for...
- 34:11Any kind of political...
- 34:12Do you know what to do?
- 34:13Do you know what to do?
- 34:14Yes, we've got to switch it on you.
- 34:18Oh my god.
- 34:19That's why.
- 34:21Oh my god.
- 34:22My ex-boyfriend spoke about...
- 34:23Do you remember that?
- 34:24Oh my god.
- 34:26I'm pretty sure they said the words.
- 34:29Like, there's just not enough stuff out there for young...
- 34:32Oh.
- 34:33Okay, I won't.
- 34:34Okay, I won't.
- 34:36Anyway.
- 34:37Because then we can't remind them we've got on them.
- 34:39You're right.
- 34:40Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:41We've got a lot on them.
- 34:42Yeah.
- 34:43That's so funny.
- 34:44Interest rates.
- 34:45So.
- 34:51That was going confident into it.
- 34:56I feel like a teacher who's trying to get the attention back
- 34:59of the student.
- 35:00Yeah, that is kind of...
- 35:01And you're like, guys.
- 35:02Interest rates.
- 35:03She'll shush pipe down in the back.
- 35:04Interest rates.
- 35:05I'm so excited to tell me all about them.
- 35:09No.
- 35:10No, very, very different.
- 35:11Are we talking interest rates in the UK?
- 35:13Gloverly.
- 35:14What are we talking about?
- 35:15So in New Zealand, we had an announcement that...
- 35:17Interest rates were on hold.
- 35:18Which was the same in Australia that Australia has had.
- 35:21And I kind of want to like flesh this out a bit because
- 35:25it's quite meaningful.
- 35:26Like we've had six interest rates cut to New Zealand.
- 35:29Australia's had a few more that are on hold.
- 35:31UK's been cutting.
- 35:33Which as we know is that when you cut interest rates
- 35:38it's to help stimulate an economy.
- 35:40Or because inflation's under control.
- 35:43You're kind of like, you know what?
- 35:44We can reduce interest rates.
- 35:46Because economy's in a really good shape.
- 35:48And it doesn't mean that we're going to, you know,
- 35:50inflation's going to run away again.
- 35:52So if we wind back a few years, we had super high inflation.
- 35:55So we increased interest rates to help bring inflation down.
- 35:58I've just had a good idea.
- 35:59Yep.
- 36:00Interest rates getting higher.
- 36:03Yeah.
- 36:04Wait, sorry.
- 36:05So interest rates going lower means we're trying to stimulate the economy.
- 36:08Yep.
- 36:09Oh no, that's not going to work.
- 36:10It's like a seesaw, right?
- 36:11So it's like as soon as you reduce interest rates,
- 36:13inflation goes up.
- 36:14And then as soon as you, they just work in opposite directions.
- 36:17So if one's going up, the other one's coming down.
- 36:20But the case in New Zealand at the moment
- 36:23and it could happen to a few other countries
- 36:25is that the economy's not doing too well.
- 36:28So you want to bring down interest rates,
- 36:30which they've been doing.
- 36:32But inflation's now ticking up a bit.
- 36:35Oh, shitballs.
- 36:36But they're like, oh gosh, the economy's not doing very well.
- 36:39Inflation's going up.
- 36:40So what do we do with interest rates?
- 36:42Do we bring them down further?
- 36:44Because interest rates?
- 36:45And inflation goes up.
- 36:46But why?
- 36:47So sorry, does inflation always go up if interest rates are down?
- 36:51Essentially.
- 36:52That's why.
- 36:53Because people are out there spending lots.
- 36:55They're demanding lots of products.
- 36:57You're kind of fueling the economy.
- 36:59So prices are going up.
- 37:00People are asking for more salaries, more wages.
- 37:03So it's like, it's a really encouraging
- 37:10and a way to stimulate the economy essentially.
- 37:14So if my interest rate's been coming down on my mortgage,
- 37:18so now I've got an extra couple of hundred dollars a month now.
- 37:22I'm like, you know what?
- 37:23That's the other thing you close from.
- 37:25I'm going to go spend that money.
- 37:26So therefore, if there was one lamp in a shop,
- 37:31and you and me both wanted to go buy that,
- 37:34because we both had discounts on our interest rates,
- 37:36and we've both got extra couple of hundred dollars,
- 37:38we're going by the lamp.
- 37:39It sells out.
- 37:40They order more.
- 37:41They put the price up next time.
- 37:42You know, like it's kind of that whole,
- 37:44there's a lot of more demand for products and services.
- 37:47We can't cut this out, but your hand keeps waving over the camera.
- 37:50So if you could just be aware of that,
- 37:52it would be stunning.
- 37:53Okay, right.
- 37:54So the idea here is that interest rates have already been cut.
- 37:58And the whole reason you cut interest rates is to try and curb inflation.
- 38:01But if interest rates are already low,
- 38:04and inflation is starting to creep away,
- 38:06it starts to get a bit dodgy,
- 38:07because there's only so much you can reduce interest rates.
- 38:09Well, yes, we're not at a place where it can't reduce anymore.
- 38:12It's more, okay, if we reduce them,
- 38:14and inflation goes up,
- 38:15the economy's already in a place that's not doing too well,
- 38:19will that just have a double negative impact?
- 38:22Because prices going out, people can't afford to spend.
- 38:25So you kind of get in this,
- 38:27what's called like a stagflation,
- 38:29which is it's not having the intended impact that you want.
- 38:33So anyway, there is a risk that we get into that,
- 38:36because what the last thing you want is really high inflation
- 38:39in an economy that's not growing,
- 38:42and that's where New Zealand could get.
- 38:44What about, and is that the same for other parts of the world?
- 38:46So Australia, the economy's flying,
- 38:48doing fantastically well.
- 38:50Why is that?
- 38:51Because they've got,
- 38:53they're really exposed to like resources,
- 38:56so like steel, aluminium, all of that, which they get.
- 38:59There's like oil and stuff like that.
- 39:01Or they're not so much oil, but more like commodities,
- 39:03like hard commodities.
- 39:04Like mines.
- 39:05Yes, mining, yeah, yeah.
- 39:06So, and they've just got like down to everything, right?
- 39:11A higher minimum wage,
- 39:13a higher superannuation contribution,
- 39:15higher wages, better job prospects.
- 39:17And that's why everyone's going there from New Zealand,
- 39:19because the economy's in a better shape,
- 39:21therefore that filters down to all other parts of the country.
- 39:26And so, yeah, I mean the UK's,
- 39:29I mean, a little bit more dicey,
- 39:31but it's still,
- 39:33we're still decreasing interest rates here.
- 39:35So, yeah, anyway,
- 39:37it's just like you don't want to get into a position as when
- 39:41the tools that you're using aren't having the attack.
- 39:44Yeah.
- 39:45You know, so you're like,
- 39:46we're reducing interest rates to give people more money,
- 39:49but prices are going up with inflation.
- 39:52So they're not spending anyway.
- 39:54They're not spending,
- 39:55because I'm a bit concerned I might lose my job.
- 39:56So instead of extra couple of hundred dollars on that lamp,
- 39:58I'm going to keep it.
- 39:59I'm not going to spend it.
- 40:01So, I don't know.
- 40:02This is like so many.
- 40:03It's like economics is like so.
- 40:05Do you think the problem is like population?
- 40:08And the reason I say that it's like Australian population,
- 40:11the UK,
- 40:12like it's higher.
- 40:14Small countries.
- 40:15I feel just inherently struggle,
- 40:17because there's not as many people to spend money.
- 40:19Yeah.
- 40:20I think the tariffs have really screwed us as well.
- 40:23I think there's just,
- 40:24there's so many, I guess.
- 40:27But why have tariffs not screwed Australia or the UK?
- 40:30Well, it's more like,
- 40:33yeah.
- 40:34I mean, there's so many moving parts.
- 40:37Well, the tariffs,
- 40:38the US and the UK have a tariff agreement now.
- 40:40Sorry, a trade agreement.
- 40:41So therefore, we're in like,
- 40:43I think, I honestly think the UK is going to be,
- 40:45have it's time in the sun.
- 40:46Really?
- 40:47Very shortly.
- 40:48Well, that's quite exciting.
- 40:49Yeah.
- 40:50I just think,
- 40:51I mean, you don't want to be bloody,
- 40:52bloody with Trump,
- 40:53but sometimes you do, you know,
- 40:55if you're the PM of the UK,
- 40:57and you're seeing him slap all these tariffs on other countries,
- 41:01you know, you kind of want to get in bed with him,
- 41:03be like, leave us alone.
- 41:04Yeah.
- 41:05Gross.
- 41:06Anyway, also, lastly,
- 41:08I'm just saying, you know,
- 41:09I'm desperate for the load.
- 41:10I know.
- 41:11And we just wrap up this.
- 41:12We'll just wrap this one.
- 41:13We'll finish on a sweet note.
- 41:16Oh, God.
- 41:17Well,
- 41:19Nutella, the company that owns Nutella.
- 41:21Yes.
- 41:22Oh, which is called Ferrero.
- 41:23Yeah.
- 41:24Because they have three or four years.
- 41:25They're actually buying Kellogg's.
- 41:28Do you know Corn Flakes?
- 41:30Do people still eat those?
- 41:31Corn Flakes.
- 41:32So, her fruit loops, they hear,
- 41:33I know.
- 41:34Do you know how much sugar?
- 41:36Oh, these are your children fruit loops in the morning.
- 41:39I'm sorry.
- 41:40I don't think.
- 41:41I would rather, like,
- 41:43yeah.
- 41:44I mean, look, all honesty,
- 41:46I think that that's a privileged position to be in.
- 41:49I think a lot of people kind of forge different types of food for their kids,
- 41:52and I also think there's such an education gap.
- 41:55100% agree.
- 41:56And I think that's where the government needs to step in,
- 41:58and make these types of...
- 41:59More expensive.
- 42:00...breakfast, more expensive,
- 42:02and subsidise fruit veg,
- 42:04or not have tax on fruits.
- 42:06Here we go again.
- 42:07Victor, P.M.
- 42:08Prime Minister.
- 42:09P.M.
- 42:10Yes.
- 42:11Do you...
- 42:12Do you buy in Kellogg's?
- 42:13I honestly am so, so surprised that they still exist.
- 42:16Well, this is the thing.
- 42:17They've had Kellogg's of really...
- 42:19their shoe prices done pretty much nothing in the last five years.
- 42:22So...
- 42:23Those are the takeover types.
- 42:24Yeah.
- 42:25So they're like, you know what?
- 42:26You're on your knees.
- 42:27I'm gonna buy you.
- 42:28Oh, this is...
- 42:29Oh, that's stunning.
- 42:30We've got some building work.
- 42:31So we can't even have podcasts.
- 42:32This is fantastic.
- 42:33I wonder if you can hear that.
- 42:35There's literally a sore going on in the background.
- 42:37Yeah.
- 42:38I kind of, before we wrap up, I did actually...
- 42:40I saw a couple of other things in your notes.
- 42:42No, we can't give them to that.
- 42:43Why?
- 42:44Because it's like, that's just a lot of...
- 42:45The Russia thing I want to know about.
- 42:47Oh, yeah.
- 42:48I don't know.
- 42:49Did you see the picture I put in there?
- 42:50No.
- 42:51So, anyway...
- 42:52Yeah.
- 42:53I'll just round out that...
- 42:54I hadn't finished talking about this.
- 42:56Oh, sorry.
- 42:57But...
- 42:58Tell me more about Cornflake.
- 43:00Yeah.
- 43:01So anyway, they're getting taken over...
- 43:02No, no, I genuinely want to know.
- 43:05Tell me.
- 43:06So, you know, they're getting taken over.
- 43:07And it was for a 30% premium to the current shoe price.
- 43:09So if you were holding shoes and Kellogg's
- 43:11or any company that was getting taken over,
- 43:13you've instantly got a 30% return in one day on your shares.
- 43:17And the thing is, if you were holding Kellogg's
- 43:19or any company that hadn't done much for the last few years,
- 43:23you're sitting there going, OK, now I've gone up 30%
- 43:26with my investments.
- 43:28You'd be like, I kind of want to sell.
- 43:30You know, I'm kind of out of here.
- 43:31I've given...
- 43:32I've been patient and nothing's happened and now I'm getting this.
- 43:34And this is why companies, when they take over other companies,
- 43:36they have to make it attractive.
- 43:38Because otherwise, why would you sell?
- 43:40Yeah.
- 43:41But it's also not a done deal, right?
- 43:42Like, there is...
- 43:43There could be kind of competition...
- 43:46Regulators, you know, that come out and go hang on, actually.
- 43:49You're now going to have one big kind of snack, me.
- 43:53That's not allowed because you're going to increase prices
- 43:56and then people won't be able to afford.
- 43:57So we're not going to let it happen.
- 43:59So there is risks when companies bid for other companies
- 44:01that they actually doesn't go through.
- 44:03So sometimes you're like, you know what, I'm going to sell
- 44:0530% because there's a risk that I might not go through.
- 44:08Anyway, the reason Kellogg's done really badly
- 44:11is you're right.
- 44:12People are just heating towards more healthier options.
- 44:15And they've realised that fruitloops actually fill the sugar
- 44:20and probably do you know?
- 44:21Fruitloops are absolutely barbaric.
- 44:24Yeah.
- 44:25It is on a sigwile to me to think that I...
- 44:27I mean, I used to be like, God, this milk just taste still.
- 44:30Look at this after you've eaten them.
- 44:32I mean, more milk.
- 44:33It's amazing.
- 44:34It's a little bit...
- 44:35It's a little bit...
- 44:36It's a little bit...
- 44:37It's a little bit...
- 44:38It's a little bit...
- 44:39It's a little bit...
- 44:40It's a little bit...
- 44:41It's a little bit...
- 44:42Interesting.
- 44:43I just want...
- 44:44Also, they got colours in them.
- 44:45Like it's not just the sugar, it's like dye.
- 44:47Yeah.
- 44:48It's sorry, continue.
- 44:49Don't do a little bit.
- 44:50And she's like a nutritionist and she was on a podcast
- 44:52and I think it was Dom actually.
- 44:54And he bought out three breakfasts
- 44:56and he was like, out of these, which one would you choose?
- 44:58Who you talking about?
- 44:59Dom Harvey.
- 45:00Yeah.
- 45:01And she was like...
- 45:02And it was neutral grain.
- 45:03I think it was fruitloops and I think it was three.
- 45:05There were three maybe cornflakes.
- 45:07And she was like, I would rather not have breakfast
- 45:09first, then put any of them in my body, like, and I was like, fair.
- 45:13And he's like, what about neutral grain though?
- 45:14It's got like strong people.
- 45:15And he's like, she's like, it's just marketing.
- 45:17It's absolute philosophy.
- 45:18And I was like, yeah, that's a marketer's dream.
- 45:20It's putting like strong athletes and like, you know, like running people
- 45:24and say, you're going to be fit in hell.
- 45:25They're like, no, no, just like read the label.
- 45:27Yeah.
- 45:28It's education.
- 45:29You're completely right.
- 45:30Lastly, Russia, so when the war with Ukraine happened, a lot of companies
- 45:37were like, you know what, we're not going to do business in Russia anymore.
- 45:41You have McDonald's pull out, you had Zara, you had Starbucks, you had Mohit Hinesi,
- 45:46you know, like, you had a lot of companies pull out from Russia.
- 45:50As a way of a stance being like, we don't condone what you do.
- 45:53We're going to start a view of money and like, you know what I mean?
- 45:55I'm sorry, when you say pull out of Russia and those companies, do you mean just
- 45:59stop selling there?
- 46:00Do you mean stop selling?
- 46:01Yep, some of them like pulled out completely and were like, we're not going to
- 46:04operate any stores there.
- 46:06They might have sold them to Russians.
- 46:07Oh, that's cool.
- 46:08It's so honestly, like, wow, one thing is not the word it won't go on.
- 46:12So this is absurd, what even is it?
- 46:16It's a good thing.
- 46:17It's so loud.
- 46:19There's 140 million people that live in Russia.
- 46:21So for a company to do that and say, you know, we're not going to operate it anymore.
- 46:26It's quite massive, massive deal.
- 46:28Anyway, I think the backlash of not doing it is also pretty damaging.
- 46:33You know, if your McDonald's was to operate in the air and say, anyway, there has been
- 46:38Russia has been like, well, okay, if you're not going to operate, we're going to create
- 46:42like doops.
- 46:43No way.
- 46:44And so there's this company called Stars Coffee with this very, very similar logo called
- 46:52Stars Coffee and they do frappuccinos and they got a butter on there.
- 46:56No.
- 46:57What does that hat look like?
- 46:58It looks like Russian.
- 46:59Oh my gosh.
- 47:00Anyway, we're seeing a lot of these pop up.
- 47:03There's like a burger chain that looks exactly like McDonald's and Valermeer Putin is
- 47:08like, well, come back and operate here or we're going to keep doping your products.
- 47:13So are they legally going to get rolled for that?
- 47:17I mean, it's Russia.
- 47:18I'm kind of like, I don't know.
- 47:19Yeah.
- 47:20But yeah, you could.
- 47:21There'll be lawsuits, definitely.
- 47:22But yeah, it's just so funny.
- 47:24They're like, well, you know what?
- 47:25If you're not going to operate in our country, it's honestly, tell me there's a male
- 47:29leader without telling me there's a male leader.
- 47:31I know.
- 47:32Yeah.
- 47:33But he's also drawing up some like legal documentation to, like to almost force countries
- 47:39to invest in Russia and like, it's going to be interesting to see what happens.
- 47:42But, but Moelle Hennessey's actually could come out recently and there's been a whistle
- 47:46blower, which I just love the term.
- 47:49Someone that's like, loving those secrets of within a company, that said, they're still
- 47:54actually operating and sending products to Russia, which companies this?
- 47:58Moelle Hennessey.
- 47:59Yeah.
- 48:00Yeah.
- 48:01Yeah.
- 48:02That's dodgy around.
- 48:03There's a whole lot of sexual harassment claims, which LVMH does not need right now.
- 48:07Like, their share prices are doing so terribly.
- 48:09And then it's saying, ooh, you are you down, but yeah, it's why would you sexual harassment
- 48:15and then it was also, they're also like, yep, and they're still shipping to Russia,
- 48:19even though they've told you they're not.
- 48:20So.
- 48:21Doesn't that make you want to sell?
- 48:22That's a pretty shit.
- 48:23I'm very excited.
- 48:25Like, it's not not for the sake of financial, like I realize, but something's down.
- 48:29It's a good time to invest.
- 48:30I know.
- 48:31But that is the whole discussion, right?
- 48:33Like, I'll give it a second.
- 48:37Sorry, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on that at some stage, because I think that's
- 48:41pretty wild.
- 48:42I mean, there's not really a question around morality there.
- 48:46It's just straight up terrible, you know?
- 48:48Both of those.
- 48:49Yeah.
- 48:50Like, you can't be like, well, the redeeming quality is that their champagne cures
- 48:54the skin diseases.
- 48:55Do you know what I mean?
- 48:56It's like, I honestly think, though, you could find something bad with every single company
- 49:02that you have.
- 49:03But that is the most defacious attitude, either, to say every company is just shit.
- 49:08But it's true.
- 49:09Yeah.
- 49:10I don't think that's true.
- 49:11You don't?
- 49:12I think there's some good companies and good people in the world that you can support
- 49:15and invest in.
- 49:16I just think the best.
- 49:17And if not, why would we want to invest?
- 49:18It's so fucking shit.
- 49:20Yeah, but like, I don't know.
- 49:22But I guess what I'm meaning is that everybody has different views of what all different
- 49:26speakers are.
- 49:27Do you think there's people that would hear there's a sexual harassment claim and think,
- 49:29do you know what?
- 49:30It's not bad.
- 49:31It's objectively not a bad thing.
- 49:32No, I don't.
- 49:33I'm saying it's bad.
- 49:34I think it's terrible.
- 49:35No, but my point is you can't.
- 49:36Yeah.
- 49:37So with this particular, I mean enough to sell is what I'm saying.
- 49:42Like, Amazon's done fucking terrible.
- 49:44Sorry.
- 49:45Yeah.
- 49:46But Amazon, like, Microsoft.
- 49:47There's not a whole lot of people who would come up and say, Amazon is a good company
- 49:51with good morals.
- 49:52You know, it's not.
- 49:53No one thinks that.
- 49:54Yeah.
- 49:55So I think.
- 49:56But you invest in it.
- 49:57No, I don't.
- 49:58It's a people I'm wondering.
- 49:59I mean.
- 50:00Yeah.
- 50:01No.
- 50:02No, but that's, but you know, like, I think I just think it's a good example of everybody's
- 50:10three-shoulds and.
- 50:15Speak quickly.
- 50:16There's a very long.
- 50:17Yeah.
- 50:18I'm like, I can't give my words.
- 50:19I think this is why investing is so individual, right?
- 50:22You want to put the money where you want the companies that you want to support.
- 50:28And for a lot of people, it's investing in companies that are changing and doing better.
- 50:33And actually, rather than just selling and not only that it's giving companies money
- 50:38that might be, it might be giving money to BP because they're going to eventually move
- 50:46to, you know, being low carbon emissions.
- 50:48You know, they've got like there on the road to do that.
- 50:51And they're going to have a much more profound impact if you support them financially.
- 50:56I'm not saying that I invested BP.
- 50:58But do you know what I mean?
- 50:59Rather than just being like, fuck it, I'm not going to invest in them.
- 51:03Moving to a world where there was some startling stat of like the amount of money
- 51:10that needs for the UK that needs to be invested to in order to reach net zero emissions.
- 51:15And it means that we're going to have to increase taxes by like 10% or something
- 51:19in order to get there because then where does the money come from?
- 51:21So it's like, I don't know.
- 51:22There's so, yeah, it's feel like we've just opened a can of worms
- 51:25in the last five minutes of this podcast.
- 51:27Yeah, I would love to see, maybe it's not you, but two people debate that.
- 51:34Because I think that while I agree, I think there's some companies that are like clearly doing good and blah, blah, blah.
- 51:42And there's also all the jobs, right?
- 51:44Like the bigger the company, like all those jobs that they're supporting,
- 51:47all the paying people, like what they bring to certain economies and cities.
- 51:51It's just, you've got such big companies with such tentacles.
- 51:58It's, there's, they're probably giving away millions to charity,
- 52:03but could be having an negative impact on the planet.
- 52:06So it's like, okay, well, watch what's at least are evil or what's a better,
- 52:09do you know what I mean?
- 52:10Like it's kind of, there is very few companies that have green flags all throughout them
- 52:18is what I'm saying.
- 52:20Don't love it.
- 52:21Like even Microsoft, they make like hardware, they use,
- 52:26they use power to generate all of their products and services.
- 52:30Like they, they, what they consume in terms of power and therefore that uses coal.
- 52:34Like where do you draw the line?
- 52:35It's kind of, like even Tesla.
- 52:37Oh, I'm not sitting here saying that Tesla is.
- 52:40And more society like company.
- 52:43But even the, even the environmental side of Tesla, like there's a huge impact on the environment
- 52:49getting left the amount of the ground for the batteries for the cars.
- 52:52And like it's just like, it's kind of also, are you just looking at the company in isolation
- 52:57or are you looking at all the suppliers of those companies?
- 52:59Are you looking at the customers of those?
- 53:00Like it's a, honestly, it's, this is such a minefield when I was a portfolio manager
- 53:06because you would have some clients being like, I don't want new universities there.
- 53:09And other saying, I do, and you're going, okay, what do I think?
- 53:13Because it's, I don't know, it's such a hard.
- 53:15I reckon if we put like Microsoft, I don't want to vest them because of what they're doing to AI
- 53:19and they're going to put millions of people out of jobs.
- 53:22And then other people are like, oh, but they've actually created all these jobs
- 53:25and they're actually giving back.
- 53:26They've got incredible charities and, you know, like all of this.
- 53:29It's fine to have two different.
- 53:32Like this is, this is exactly what investing is about.
- 53:34It's having two people multiplied by millions.
- 53:37They're having different, there's, you know, whenever you buy a share,
- 53:40there's someone selling it, right?
- 53:41Like it's, or whenever you buy it.
- 53:43Okay, I'm just sorry.
- 53:44I'm just aware that we've spoken so nearly an hour.
- 53:46And this is like a really intense and really important conversation.
- 53:49I think we should continue.
- 53:50I think when I'm getting it, as there is no, you're never going to come out
- 53:54being like, this is a good company and everyone thinks that.
- 53:58Well, this is a bad company.
- 54:00Can I put the word out?
- 54:01Can I put the word out?
- 54:02The word out?
- 54:03Anyone that's listening, whether it's you or you know someone you've heard someone in a debate or a conversation,
- 54:08speak about this and feel quite confident when it comes to a stance
- 54:13on moral or ethical investing.
- 54:16But even that.
- 54:17Ah, moral, moral and ethics.
- 54:19Everybody has different morals and ethics.
- 54:21Yes.
- 54:22So what I'm trying to say is, if there's somebody who feels like they would be able to hold their own in a conversation like this,
- 54:27oh, can you bring my stomach?
- 54:28But hungry, sorry.
- 54:29Please get in touch with us.
- 54:32We've got an email, hello, at thecurveplatform.com.
- 54:35If it's nominating yourself, excuse me.
- 54:38I have done this for years and there is like,
- 54:42I just...
- 54:43I want to use LVMH as an example.
- 54:45Yeah.
- 54:46For you to decide whether or not you're going to sell it or not.
- 54:48Yeah.
- 54:49I want to get almost someone that's like on the fore and the against.
- 54:52Do you know, you're going to have to research that company.
- 54:55Yep.
- 54:56Like, it will take so long to research that company in depth.
- 55:01And there's still probably stuff that I won't know that they do.
- 55:04There's stuff you don't, you know, like it's just...
- 55:06I just think that the idea of thinking about this
- 55:10is really important because you can't be going
- 55:13and choosing to not spend your money as a consumer somewhere
- 55:16but then investing blindly.
- 55:18Like, you have to think about at all.
- 55:20And I think, you know, yesterday...
- 55:22I agree with that.
- 55:23I agree with that.
- 55:24Yesterday in our strategy session when we're talking about business strategy
- 55:26and like, what we want the curve to be
- 55:28and what we want people to think of when we think of the curve.
- 55:30Like, one of the main things we talk about is like investing for good
- 55:33and social impact and that means more money in the hands of women.
- 55:38Yeah.
- 55:39Diversifying where capital goes throughout the world
- 55:41so that we can see a more stable, diverse kind of world, right?
- 55:48Like, that's what we talk about a lot at the curve behind the scenes.
- 55:51Like, women inherently invest with a completely different lens
- 55:54and heart than men do.
- 55:55Yeah.
- 55:56And therefore, it's really important.
- 55:57And so, I think with that, we need to continue that conversation
- 56:00and actually help guide people in their thinking.
- 56:04It doesn't mean telling everyone what to do.
- 56:07But I think that there's a real hang-up for a lot of people
- 56:10when it comes to investing.
- 56:11Because they're like, well, I want to make money
- 56:13and I want to grow my wealth.
- 56:14But I also don't want to be supporting child labor.
- 56:17And I think that, yeah, just speaking about that's really important.
- 56:20There's a lot of information barrier as well, right?
- 56:25Because the everyday investor doesn't have access to all of that information either.
- 56:30And I think that's where the disconnect also happens.
- 56:33There might be people that don't even know this about LVMH.
- 56:37Oh, and I didn't.
- 56:39And so, it's like, it's how do you get all that information and knowledge
- 56:45so that people can make an informed decision?
- 56:47And timely, right?
- 56:48Because it changes all the time.
- 56:50And this has only just come to light now.
- 56:52They might fix it and have some of the best policies ever.
- 56:56So, it's just, I think it's, yeah, there's just such a moving beast.
- 57:00Yeah.
- 57:01And it changes all the time, right?
- 57:03So, it's like, but I agree.
- 57:05I think there's like, I think it's just an interesting conversation too.
- 57:08Like, I just find it interesting to know and talk about.
- 57:11So, my call out is just if there's someone that either has heard someone that's really,
- 57:18it doesn't have to be just about this company.
- 57:20Maybe it's just the space or this area and they're really confident
- 57:23or they've read an article from someone amazing or you are passionate about the space
- 57:28that would be keen to have a chat about it.
- 57:30Just get in touch because they think, you know, that was a really long story.
- 57:34Sorry, that was so long.
- 57:35Well, normally we would cut it down by like, proof 15 minutes.
- 57:38And we're like, what do you cut out?
- 57:40That was great.
- 57:41I'm happy.
- 57:42I doubt it.
- 57:43People will be like, we love the bit where you just sat on the couch looking at Sophie's laptop
- 57:47and we couldn't see what you were doing.
- 57:49So, we couldn't, yeah.
- 57:50Have a great week, everyone.
- 57:52And we'll be back with an edited version.
- 57:55Yes.
- 57:56Hopefully next week.
- 57:57Hopefully.
- 57:58Bye.
- 57:59Bye.

- 58:13That if you did hate it.
- 58:14Please, don't leave one if you hate it.
- 58:16No, but in all seriousness, could you please leave a review?
- 58:19Because it really helps other people find our cute little podcast.
- 58:22And we hope you have a good week and see you next Monday.
- 58:24Bye.
- 58:25See you next Tuesday.
