[upbeat music] And there it was. I lifted my head- [laughs]...
• 0:17
with a hell of a hangover, and I said, "Is anybody here?" [laughs] That's another night with Chewy. Don't be blaming this shit on me. The lights came on in the bars.
• 0:28
[laughs] That, that- [laughs] I can honestly say this is the first time that anybody's ever turned the lights on me at the Haymarket. At the Haymarket? Yes. I've never had that happen to me before, ever.
• 0:38
Uh- Wow Show number? 16. Sure? Yeah. Because- I was gonna say between 15 and 25. [laughs] It's one of those. [laughs] Oh, shit. Hang on. All right. Welcome to, uh, Chewy's Lounge here, um, number 16.
• 0:53
We are actually in Spinner's kitchen, and he's actually cooking us breakfast. This is fantastic. He's trying. He's trying, yeah. Uh, with us this morning, uh, Spinner and I, [object drops]
• 1:07
um, Pat Mersch from Drunk Cyclist and the, uh, and Kayla from [laughs] Scandi- You're outing him. He's got a nickname. No, that's too long to say- [laughs]... and hard to say. Scandinavian Jesus. See what I see.
• 1:19
Scandinavian Jesus. You can't say that, you cannot say that word, you can't say that hungover. That's the problem. [laughs] Too many syllables in there? Yes, like 15 too many. And, and once again, Kayla's back. Mm-hmm.
• 1:29
I'm not sure why she's back, but she's decided that this is fun. Part of the cool kids now. Yeah. It's official.
• 1:35
[object drops] Um, so anyway, this is the, um, we're gonna call this the, um, Single Speed USA podcast from the home of [laughs] Single Speed USA. Now there's an agenda. [laughs] Now- We waited until we started.
• 1:50
[laughs] This is news to me as well. Ah. Uh. I can't get to my fridge. Getting close. Oh my God. This is awesome because Spinner's- This is so heavy...
• 1:58
actually walking around with his headphones on and listening to himself cook breakfast. Listening to you guys. Oh, yeah. Um- I can't hear Pat. You gotta get closer, I think. Pat hasn't said anything.
• 2:09
He's- I haven't said anything. [laughs] The first thing you said is, "I haven't said anything." [laughs] So, uh, the whole reason this came is, is because Pat flew in especially just to hang out with us.
• 2:22
That's more or less true. [laughs] And, and, um, and discuss all... W- So last night we did a really good job of figuring out all the cool things we were gonna do for Single Speed USA.
• 2:33
The question is, does anybody remember any of it? Not a goddamn thing. [laughs] Pat...
• 2:39
Well, Pat, the good thing is, is Pat writes everything down, so he has a- Well, the, the, the problem here is that I started writing it down this morning. [laughs] So it may not be ac- as accurate- [laughs]...
• 2:51
as of 9:45 this morning. No, no, it's probably, well, it's probably better than it was last night because last night...
• 2:56
Well, there was really good ideas last night, and I, I can only remember one of them, and I'm, [laughs] that's the least, the least, um, probably important of all of them, was the corn field. Oh yeah, corn field bar.
• 3:06
Oh, the corn field bar. Yeah. Yeah. The corn field bar is gonna have to happen somehow. I mean, I, I think if, if you're from out of the region and you're gonna make a trip to Iowa,
• 3:14
you need a cocktail served in a corn field. Without a doubt. That's, that definitely has to happen. So we do- the date is set. I'm not even gonna say the date because every time I do, I get it wrong.
• 3:27
The d- the actual d- I'm pretty sure it's August 20. Yeah. The 20th is a Saturday, and that's the day of the race. Yep. Um, yes, you should- What? You, yes, you should get in earlier. There's a race? Yes, you should. No.
• 3:37
Well- It's an event... a stage race. Yeah. There's several races. That's right. None of them matter. [laughs] [laughs] Several races, no winners.
• 3:46
Um, the, uh, we will, everything will be hosted at the Elks, 'cause we're all gonna join the Elks, [object drops] and they have an awesome place. Which we still need to do. [laughs] Ah, we got time.
• 3:56
The application is under the bacon on the kitchen table right now. [laughs] I'm physically pulling out- That's where all important things should go... from under the bacon. Yeah.
• 4:04
Can we get on there today and sign up, Spinner? Um, I think so. I believe they're open today. Well, that's the thing when you're a member, you can go in there anytime and drink. Well, right.
• 4:12
That, that, that was, like, when you all first joined, um, the Elks, a, a bunch of the, a bunch of the Mountain Bikers down here- Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Did you read the proposer- No...
• 4:22
on the back of this application? No. Why? It's, uh- Do you know us? Could you read it, please? Getting a close-up. It says on here- I'm getting-...
• 4:28
"I realize that membership in the Elks is attained by invitation only, that the standards for membership are high and limited to persons of good moral character- [laughs]... and who believe in God." Oh.
• 4:40
That's the first fucking sentence. [laughs] Are you kidding me? Did you read this? No, because, because- We're fucked... I joined the Elks in Rochester- That's, there's three more sentences. That's the first one.
• 4:47
I think in the fine, fine print it already says that you and Spinner are not allowed to join. [laughs] "In proposing this applicant, I attest that they are morally, socially, and financially responsible-
• 4:59
So I'm still out... and that in my estimation will become an active member in support of our beliefs." This is bullshit. [object drops] You're fucked, man. Wait, wait till you go to the meeting.
• 5:08
Uh, uh, when I joined- I can ruin it There's meetings? Oh, no. When I joined the Elks, it's like joining a cult. I mean, the, the, they don't abide by any of this shit, like- So what... I don't understand- [laughs]...
• 5:18
why we're so excited about joining. Because it's a really cool place to have a party. We, we did- Oh, right... um, did we do the first or second Pugsley World Championship there? First couple.
• 5:27
And, and it wa- and it's a great, it's, uh, it's a great place to hold an event because they've got a big hall, and then they've got a nice quaint little bar. Yeah. And it's a fantastic place. And the people are...
• 5:37
And like Spinner said, you, once you're a member, like, we go for a bike ride, and we just stop in and have a couple beers, and if you have your money with you, fine.
• 5:44
If, you just leave it on the bar, and if you don't, you stop back later and pay. So it's fantastic from that standpoint. And then if you're a member, you don't have to pay to use their, like, area, right?
• 5:55
That's the other part of it, too. Yeah. Versus- We're too bastard to-... 'cause T Box would be a good a- area upstairs, right? But you have to pay. No- Well-... no, no, um, um- So Elks has, like, a restaurant.
• 6:04
Well, not a restaurant. They have a kitchen downstairs, and there's a bar, and up top there's, like, a gym, like a gymnasium with a stage So that's where Holly McCombie's band play. Right. Oh, okay.
• 6:13
So, and, and, and, and we could do that at, we could do that at T Box. And the- And T Box, have you been to the upper level of T Box? It's beautiful up there. They've done a really nice job of fixing it up. Yeah.
• 6:23
The problem is, is that... It's not a problem, 'cause, 'cause Bachman's will let us use it for nothing. I mean, they're super people, and they've supported us all the way through.
• 6:31
The problem is, is that they have so much shit going on. I hate, I hate tying up their place when they could make money off of it, if you know what I mean. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Makes sense.
• 6:40
I would- I'd like to draw attention back to the application- [laughs]... bit again, 'cause I don't think you guys have read enough. [laughs] Right. You have, you have to- Hey... according to- Hey, Mr.
• 6:48
Bad News, put that down. [laughs] It's too early for this bullshit. [laughs] It is too early for that.
• 6:53
I express a preference to serve on the committee or committees, uh, circle below, and I don't think you guys have read this. [laughs] I think that's clear. [laughs] I just wanna...
• 7:02
I just, you know, I'd rather rip the Band-Aid off now than- [laughs] Um, I, I have never... It's the first time I've seen this. Well, we'll just go ahead and circle sick visitation. Oh, yeah. 'Cause that's on here, so.
• 7:15
We, we can, we can do a sick visitation. Yep. We're good at that. We can get- Oh, is it sick people? No. Oh. Oh, I thought us being sick. Never mind. Yeah, what does it mean? What is...
• 7:26
[laughs] Maybe we'll circle a different one. Do you guys need plates and napkins? Sorry. No. Oh, bingo's on here. It's right after- Oh, I'm doing bingo... right before sick visitation. I'm in, I'm in for bingo. Perfect.
• 7:36
All right. Yeah, I fucking love bingo. I'll, I'll call bingo. [indistinct] Spottville. You have 102 1083- And that, that Spinner's, uh, it's a volunteer fire department... Yeah, you, you can choose. There's many options.
• 7:52
Do I, can I choose for you guys what you're gonna do? I think bingo is the lowest common denominator on there. Hey, vet- Uh, what's, what's live sports? Are we considered a live sport? We are now. Yeah. We're in.
• 8:06
We just- Oh... we just, we just, just by putting on this race, we've actually served our purpose to the office. There you go. But you, you checked off one box of all the other concerns.
• 8:17
[laughs] I don't have to check off any more. There's like 20 of them on here. I also have to check off this one. I'm happy with that. What are you doing? He's got a whole... I, I...
• 8:28
We have to go v- We have to go live with this in video, because watching Spinner cook is rather interesting. [laughs] Rather interesting. [laughs] Okay. I don't know how else to put it. [laughs] He has plates.
• 8:41
He has bowls. He has- He has sauteed mushrooms... he has, he has a sa- Oh, look at that, sauteed mushrooms. I'd then go with some scrambled eggs, but he's got like a whole slew of things going.
• 8:49
We have hash browns that we didn't decide to try to eat them after the bar uncooked. [laughs] Yeah. I wish I would've had that on Snapchat.
• 8:56
[laughs] Um, uh, you will loan me that picture if possible, because- Oh, with Spinner in the fetal position- Yeah... hunched over a chair. What? I, I- That was entertaining for all of us, I think...
• 9:05
he was, he was sitting in the chair in my, at my place and just kinda like laid back.
• 9:08
His head was like barely on his shoulders anymore, and then you come out there, and all of a sudden he's in the fetal position with his head on the seat of the chair. And I'm like, "How did that happen?" What happened?
• 9:19
I just got back on the mic. [laughs] What are you guys talking, what are you guys talking about? Wow. We're just talking about you last night and, and the interesting positions- Stop that. No, it was all right.
• 9:28
What was- I knew-... especially entertaining is the fact that it took both of you to get his ass out of your house [laughs] and into my car so I could get you guys back here.
• 9:36
That was- That was, that was almost post- I'm heavy. It was- [laughs] [laughs] That was almost post, uh, post Santa Rapids- I wanna start playing I Came in Like a Wrecking Ball.
• 9:47
[laughs] 'Cause that's how you got in my car. Oh. You were just like... [laughs] Oh, that's right. We piled him in the back.
• 9:53
[laughs] Well, he did that twice, because when we left your place, he also just kinda like piled into the backseat face first. Yeah. And then- How do you guys get in cars?
• 10:02
I mean, [laughs] I get in a car- I don't go face first. Could you please- That's first step- Like a lady? Do I like curtsy and lift my skirt and just step in nicely? I- You should. Yeah.
• 10:11
I went through all that, Pat went through all that trouble of cleaning out the back seat so he had some place to sit. Just trying to be a good guest, that's all.
• 10:19
Yeah, so s- speaking of which, let's go back to your trip, and why are you here? I mean, other than you had nothing [laughs] else to do. Yeah, quite literally.
• 10:27
[laughs] I needed, I needed to achieve a certain amount of miles with American Airlines, so this is a miles run, and I decided to just stop.
• 10:39
One of the options was to go from Phoenix to Charlotte, and Charlotte home, but there was no non-stops going home, and one of them made a stop in Cedar Rapids, and I was like, "Well, fuck it. I'll come up and say hello."
• 10:49
Yeah, and you rented a car and came up. Yeah. Cedar Rapids, Iowa, one of the international cities. Yeah. I gotta get you a, a portable mic just so you can wander around. So that's it. That's why I'm here. Yeah.
• 11:00
And I have to, I have to go- [laughs]... somewhat soon. I, I, I somewhat remember saying we need to be up and get this shit going by 9:00, right? Oh, the flight, flight's at 6:00.
• 11:09
I need to be down there by quarter to 5:00. That's not bad. Which means I need to leave quarter to 3:00. So- And there's time.
• 11:15
It's just- And Cedar Rapids is really- I just, I, I, I question what we're fucking talking about. Hm. Because I feel like we're- We all question that... talking about shit. Yeah, pretty much- [laughs]...
• 11:23
because- Spinner's trying to make us breakfast, and you come in here with, uh, your podcast and, and yet no agenda. I never have an agenda. Yeah. I just- We didn't even know he was coming.
• 11:35
We were driving around town- Yeah, we were, we were-... and the only reason we knew too he was here, 'cause he couldn't get into my house. [laughs] We were, we were out busy achieving in the world. What?
• 11:43
Did you show him the trails? We were on our way. We were trying to. Oh. Yeah. Sorry. We, you get a high level. I, I, I really, I really feel bad for interrupting you guys' work. You saw a bluff.
• 11:51
That's what you're mostly- I got a ding that somebody's at your door, and I get another ding, somebody's at your door, another ding.
• 11:56
I'm like, "Who the fuck is-" He literally just sat there, like, aggressively punching it. [laughs] That's probably what started breaking the door in the first place.
• 12:03
[laughs] It's- [laughs] So anyway- Oh, we never thought about that. If you ding it too many times, does it go Lock resilient- It's not connected to the door... shut down? Yeah. I don't know. We're all locked out now.
• 12:10
Yep. Back door for everybody. [laughs] Well, you've got... Yeah. So anyway. Wait a minute. [laughs] It took you that long, huh? [laughs]I, I had, I had a, I, yeah. [laughs] And yeah.
• 12:24
Anyways, so apparently the agenda is Single Speed USA. Mm. Yeah. Yeah. So what sort of shenanigans are we getting ourselves into? So, um,
• 12:31
I think it's ac- Well, okay, d- d- we decided w- how soon are we going to post, uh, registration? Next month? I would say, like, I don't know. I've, I've been kinda debating that.
• 12:43
I don't wanna do it now because we started talking about it's seven months away- Right... it's six months away. So do you do, like, within four months? We could do it anytime.
• 12:51
So- Well, we- So I, I think the question is what do you need to reserve/organize? You gotta get closer. [laughs] I think I'm- I'm s- I'm, I'm- Can't hear you, bud. That's perfect. Okay. No, that's perfect.
• 13:04
[laughs] What do you need to organize? How much lead, lead time, money, finance? Do you need to take out any loans? Are we credit? No. No. Credit checks of any kind or? No.
• 13:16
Well, yeah, I remember when we did Single Speed Wisconsin, some people bitched that it was 60 bucks, but that covered your trail fee- Mm... um, your roller skates, uh, your camping- [laughs] Oh, interesting...
• 13:24
your camping fee. Uh, you know, everybody got a T-shirt. Uh- I still wear it... Silipines. The Silipines, yep, yep. So, um, we're not gonna have a lot of expenses here.
• 13:34
That's one thing about this race is, like, there will be no camping fees. There will be no common campground. You're gonna have to get your own, uh, reserve your own spot, hotel, Airbnb.
• 13:42
So that is the kind of information that people need- Yeah... sooner than later. I feel like I've said that before. You just got it. Yeah, I'm just going- We've talked about this several times.
• 13:49
He obviously does not listen to the podcast. Yeah. Obviously, yeah. [laughs] No, I do not. No, I do not. This is why this is all very confusing to me. [laughs] 'Cause I don't know who listens to this. Nobody.
• 13:57
The, uh- You- Us [laughs]... we pi- we, we picked up one more person, so it's really well. Yeah. Um, yeah. But yeah, the audience is up to six. Yeah. Yep. So we'll have... Yeah.
• 14:07
We just gotta get the spot to host, which should be the Elks. If it's not the Elks, we can do it somewhere.
• 14:11
Uh- Well, the nice thing about the Elks is, is your place is right across the street, which is probably one of our, one of several hangouts that we have, but it's probably one of the more, I can't say popular.
• 14:21
It's one of the ones that we like because the owners are friends of ours, and- Yeah... um, they help out as much as they can. Yeah.
• 14:28
And well, and the other thing about the Elks is that Folk et Als parking lot is around there. Yeah.
• 14:32
So you used to rent this pa- this parking lot to the city, uh, lease it to them, but they quit renewing their lease, so now there's just concrete blocks around the whole thing.
• 14:39
So there's basically this huge derby court [laughs] Yeah... around the Elks. [laughs] Or if whatever we're gonna do for hosting, we should be able to do it in that parking lot right outside the bar. Right. We, w- yeah.
• 14:49
So, and then, like, well, w- we, how many bars we go to last night? I don't know. They're all- Four... pretty much on one block, so as soon as that's done, everybody can go do whatever they want.
• 14:58
And there's hippie bars and sports bars and fighting bars and drinking bars- [laughs]... and whiskey bars and- They-... wine bars. [laughs] I have never been in the wine bar ever. Loretta? I nev- no, Lo- Loretta's.
• 15:10
Oh, that's li- wine bar. What's, uh, what's the other one that's downtown? Oh, Rubiat. Yeah, I've never been to Rubiat. Yeah. Yeah. I didn't even know that was a thing. Yeah, there's fancy people here. Yeah.
• 15:19
I like, I like your use of the term downtown versus just town. [laughs] I was like, well- You're, you're essentially either here- Yeah [laughs]... or you're not. That's about it. Uptown?
• 15:28
It's, it's a mall, and that's downtown. I think we're, like, technically aren't we a meteorite crater or something here? Mm, something like that, yeah. I heard recently.
• 15:36
Um- A moraine, might potentially a moraine, a moraine valley. See, this is where- I don't even know what that is. [laughs] It's too early for those kinds of words. [laughs] Yeah, it's approaching noon.
• 15:46
Too early for geology. Watch your language. [laughs] Too early for geology. [laughs] No earth science before noon. You can swear, but watch your language.
• 15:53
[laughs] We don't need that kind of- No earth science before noon. Come on. [laughs] Be reasonable. Right. Look at- Vivian's gotta go out... this is, it has it with us already. It's a heat wave. It's 43 degrees. Already?
• 16:08
What place is that? Are we biking today? Is that happening? Um, I didn't bring a bike. [sighs] You can just go in the back of mine. Yeah. Okay. I don't even sit on the seat.
• 16:17
Yeah, what, what part of single speeding necessitates a bicycle? Yeah. [laughs] This is, this is, this is 90% of it right here. Yeah. Sitting around the table talking.
• 16:26
We can just get some bikes and push them around today. Yeah. [laughs] That's kinda what the hills are like here. That's single speeding in Decorah. I could, I could take my sweet fat bike- Push the bike to the hill...
• 16:33
which is a, a clunker because it's a coaster brake one. Yeah. Mm. Did you bring all your stuff to ride? I always do. Really? I always bring at least one bike and all my gear. [laughs] Who is this person?
• 16:45
[laughs] I don't know. It's, it's not the person that- Bike beer shenanigans. That's always on my agenda. I don't remember you saying anything about, other than about shenanigans last night.
• 16:53
That was, there was no talk about- Well, there was a lot of shenanigans last night. Yeah. No biking to be had. Don't hurry, Viv. So we have a date. Okay, we have a date. We have a, yeah. August 20th. August 20th. Yeah.
• 17:04
We, August 20th, um- We have a place, a location. A location. Decorah. We have trails. Mm-hmm. And we have trails coming out our ears 'cause we have, um, we have a cornfield possibly. Just one.
• 17:14
[laughs] We gotta shoot that cornfields. Is, is there any that we can use? So I was thinking like Friday four o'clock. Wait, August might be hard for a cornfield party, right? No.
• 17:25
Actually, it'd be better because the corn should be tall enough that you can actually not see each other. It'll start- [laughs] It'll start to be turning for sure. Oh, I'm a little concerned already about this.
• 17:36
[laughs] Well, all year we'll sit there. If you guys can't even find your way home from the bar in the middle of winter, you're gonna- Well, no. We all made it to my place last night.
• 17:44
We will pr- we can print out directions and give them to people like Sam specifically- Yeah... who rides 30 miles in the wrong direction- Yeah... in the cold. Well, that's true. I have no idea what that's like.
• 17:56
[laughs] Yeah. You just gotta give him a compass. Head east. No, no, no. [laughs] No, that doesn't work. You need, you need a, a return to sender button for him.
• 18:05
We're gonna, we need to put a little flag on top of the- So-... city hall... in single speed world- And it says, "When you get to the top of the hill, go find the flag."
• 18:11
Well, the nice thing about these trails is that it's so close to town. Like, literally, if it's dark, you just look to where the glow is. You're gonna see the city.
• 18:18
You can see town from, like, especially now, there's no leaves on the trees, you can see town from almost every trail. That won't be the case in August, though. Probably not. Fuck 'em.
• 18:28
[laughs] We're gonna lose people in cornfield one. Now you, now you, do you wanna- Okay... do you wanna move this to October, November so the trees, leaves are off the trees? No. Yeah.
• 18:36
Actually, October would be a really good time for a ride, too. It could be. It could be a really shitty time, too. That's the problem. We can move it. Oh, it could be super cold. Yeah.
• 18:42
So, oh, besides that, besides that, um, we will be in Texas in October for Singlespeed Texas. Oh. Um, that's October 8th. Well, and the reason we picked the date that we did is, um- Which is? Uh, August 20th again.
• 18:58
[laughs] Um, so we have planned for the, for the four people- Mr.- Mr.- Mr. NPR over here... for the four people listening, they might want information With your morning coffee, here is Singlespeed USA Update.
• 19:10
[laughs] [laughs] So, hi. This is Jesse Rogerson- [laughs]... for Singlespeed USA. [laughs] Coming to you live from my fucking kitchen. [laughs] So- [laughs] I like how you, I like how you all have, like, NPR voices.
• 19:26
[laughs] It's, like, really impressive. You're really good at that. God, you put a microphone in you guys- Well... and all of a sudden you turn into gigantic nerds. It's impressive. Well- [laughs]...
• 19:32
and we're extremely hungover. Yeah. That helps. Oh, this is the- But, uh, the reason-... Zoom hangover edition [laughs]...
• 19:36
we picked that date, so most people know, and if you don't know, if you've heard of Toppling Goliath, Sudzu beer, it's, uh, brewed here, and they have releases, like, every month.
• 19:45
And when they have a release, the town is full. People come from all over the world for these, to this little town of 7,000, 8,000 people, and every hotel, Airbnb, everything's full.
• 19:55
So, that's why we didn't do it on the first weekend. We're also have a college here, and we... Yeah.
• 20:02
[laughs] So we, um, we- I wanted to do it when college was not here, so when the kids aren't here 'cause that's another 2,000 people. Uh-huh. And then, like, when they move in, football games and stuff like that.
• 20:11
Like last night? Yeah. Well, yeah, whatever the rugby team was doing here. Like, are they locals or are they just here? I don't know. Yeah, the rugby team is a lot of local guys. Okay. And then what else?
• 20:22
Oh, Nordic Fest is this huge Norwegian festival. That's the end of July. We didn't wanna do it that weekend. Right. So we missed that because the town's full. And then RAGBRAI comes through.
• 20:31
Well, I guess it's a little bit south this year, but a lot of bikers and RAGBRAI's are, registers annual great bike ride across Iowa. Attaboy. Attaboy. [laughs] I didn't even say that out loud. That's, that's not bad.
• 20:42
That's not bad. So yeah, and that's thousands and thousands of people. I've never done RAGBRAI, but- Is it coming through this year? No, it goes south. It won't be through Decorah.
• 20:49
But there's a lot of people that do that, too. Spill over. Yeah. Okay. So yeah, I don't know. There we go. That's...
• 20:57
We, we had to kinda pick that weekend and try to make the balance, make it late enough in the year, um, that we had time to plan or guess what we're gonna do [laughs] and then, you know, avoid the big crowds when this town gets full.
• 21:09
So, um- Because when this town gets full, it's really full. I mean, it's, it, um- Yeah. Restaurants are full. I mean- All the different events that go on here, this, this town is like...
• 21:18
And there's, there's, like, an ungodly amount of Airbnbs here. Like- Yeah... I can't remember the number. It was, it was insane. I looked it up one time. I think there's over 100. Yeah.
• 21:25
And, and, and people had asked us if we were gonna Airbnb our place. Yeah. And I'm like- Which is?... "You know, why- What's, what's the address? So- Don't say the address, honey. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. It's a trap.
• 21:37
[laughs] But you know us, we, we, I wonder, I wonder if there's gonna be any... [laughs] The assisted living next door to us wonder if there's any empty apartments we can use for the, for the race. [laughs] No.
• 21:46
The, the people that, the, the, honestly- We, we may be residents... the people that live there would love us. I'm, I'm not kidding you.
• 21:51
They can hardly wait until we come down, and there's been more than one night where there's been a few drunk people hanging around there, and they love it. It's like there's, "Oh, there's activity around our place."
• 22:00
They're all happy about it. [laughs] Oh, I'm sure there's a show. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah. There's plenty of entertainment. When Kelly and her friends, when they, they crashed in the bushes outside.
• 22:07
At least I crashed inside the house, right? Right. [laughs] You, you crashed a few times. Yeah. So if you're- In the car, in the house. Yeah. [laughs] If you're coming from out of state- Mm-hmm... there's no campground.
• 22:20
There is a campground. No. There is a campground. There's a s- uh, well, not a common campground. So we're not gonna say that you can... We're not gonna rent, like, a space for everybody to stay.
• 22:30
There is a campground in town. Mm-hmm. But it's usually packed. There is free camping in the woods here, in the trails. So rustic, I mean, no bathrooms. You can kinda camp anywhere.
• 22:42
There's a bunch of camp spots out there. But I wouldn't recommend that. Where, where in town would you suggest be- Over there. Yeah. [laughs] Well, okay. [laughs] So Jesse's pointing out his window. Yeah.
• 22:55
[laughs] If you were coming from out of town, out of state- Yeah... would you advise staying close to, to downtown, to anywhere in particular? Nothing's really that far. That's the thing. Yeah.
• 23:05
I mean, it, it, it depends on you, how much you... I mean, downtown, downtown is- [laughs]... is, is reachable by bicy- when...
• 23:15
This is kind of, to me, the cool thing about this place is, um, this goes back to what Singlespeed Racing originally started.
• 23:21
Uh, uh, Singlespeed World, Singlespeed USA, whatever, once you get here, you should never have to get in your car again. Right. Yeah. You can get to the course. You can get to camping. You can get to food.
• 23:30
You can get to a bar. And everything is, is done by bicycle. Probably the farthest thing away would be the campgrounds, and that's maybe three-quarters of a mile. Yeah.
• 23:39
I kn- I have people that live out in the country here that, friends of mine, that drive into town to go camping [laughs] because the campground is here. So that's the other thing.
• 23:46
If you dropped a pin in the middle of Decorah, I bet everything is, like, four miles maybe. Maybe. Yeah. Yeah. So, um, yeah, when you get here, you're not gonna have to drive. You park the car, and you're done.
• 23:57
So, um, but there is no real airport here. The closest would be Rochester, Minnesota, is, like, an hour away. La Crosse, Wisconsin, is, like, an hour away. Uh, Cedar Rapids is two hours, two and a half, whatever.
• 24:10
Silent plug for the, uh, the zipper. The zipper in FaStina. [laughs] Fist- Did you guys know that? Oh, FaStina is how you pronounce it? Okay. How are you saying it? I would say Fastina. Oh, no. It's FaStina.
• 24:20
[laughs] Only because- Silly. Fastina? Is that how you said- That's so silly. That's how I would read that. Fastina. Oh. Yeah. FaStina. I- I've never heard it said that way, but yeah. He's not from here. Yeah.
• 24:34
I'm from the Mountain Time Zone. I'm sorry. You guys have time zones in Arizona? None. Or not time zones, daylight savings? We do not- Okay... participate, no. Yeah. It's about to get a lot brighter here next week.
• 24:44
So when- Um... when it's 100 and- It's early this year, isn't it?... when it's 119, we can have the sun go down earlier. Yeah. We, we don't need extra daylight in the summer. Yeah. Hmm.
• 24:54
'Cause the sun listens to daylight savings. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] It's like, "Oh, time to go to bed." [laughs] Yeah. But it's a heat wave today. I mean, it was negative one yesterday- Gonna be like 41 degrees-...
• 25:04
and it's like 40 today... today. Yeah, yeah. And on Monday it's supposed to snow and be below zero again. Mm-hmm. Yep. Yeah. So- Good old Midwest... back to Singlespeed.
• 25:11
[laughs] So I'd like to do, uh, tubing, like Friday night probably, like 4:00 to 6:00, and put in at Chattahoochee Park and then float into town.
• 25:19
That's the nice thing about this town too is there's a big river that goes through the middle, and that's a big part of this city and that's a lot of fun. Sit your ass on a tube, float and drink beers. Uh, Busch Lights.
• 25:29
That's Iowa dish decoration. Can't- [laughs] [laughs] So, um, and we did miss out on- So this is a BYO operation if you want anything. BYO-BYOT, bring your own tube. So that's, that's the other problem here.
• 25:42
Yeah, so that would be BYO, but how much beer do we want? So we talked to Pulpit Rock about possibly doing a Singlespeed USA beer edition- Yes... that week. Ooh.
• 25:51
Um, so, and, and yeah, no, and, and that's the cool thing is, is yes, Top and Goliath is the big beer in town here. Mm-hmm. However, Pulpit Rock is- They've got the best sours. Well, yeah, they do cool stuff.
• 26:03
They're f- I, I, I real- I personally, I like Pulpit Rock much better than I do Top and Goliath. Same.
• 26:09
And no offense against either one of them, but it's just, that's more my favorite kind of beer just because he, he does smaller batches, and- Mm-hmm... his collaborations are sillier maybe. I don't know.
• 26:20
And then- But, but it's all good They have more creative, like, collaborations I feel like. Yeah. I think so too, yeah, yeah. Mm-hmm. But he's not, he's also not worried about feeding the masses like Top and Goliath is.
• 26:30
Well, and you can bike there from town. Yeah. So Pulpit Rock is right in the middle of town next to the river, where Top and Goliath is up the hill by the airport.
• 26:37
Maybe I was gonna say, people should be- It's not very bikeable... realize that- Right... yeah, uh, Top and Goliath, to get to Top and Goliath is not... It is bikeable, but you don't want to.
• 26:45
I, I, I don't recommend anybody riding up there- No... or coming back from there. No. It's a four lane. It's a four lane, uh, Iowa road up the hill, and that's a big climb. And there's a back way.
• 26:54
There's a back gravel roadway that comes back through, um, Freeport and stuff, but at the same time it's like- Oh. That's a lot. Yeah. It's still a big climb and, and it's...
• 27:03
Um, but there's a shuttle that takes you up there. Mm-hmm. So one of the ideas that- [coughs]... that did not make it into my book, but I'm remembering last night- It's all coming back now. [laughs]...
• 27:12
is a RAGBRAI style bus- I got one of those... from- Yeah... a larger- Large... city. We're not bringing that bus down here. Not the original Roader bus. Our new one. Return of the Robin bus? Yeah.
• 27:26
Well, no, and I'm gonna say- Yours could be fat... not a single bus, but we would just put a call out and say- Essentially a shuttle of sorts... if you're coming- Fat...
• 27:32
if you are a RAGBRAI person who has one of these buses, put out like a, "Hey, could you drive your bus up here and bring people with you when you do that?"
• 27:40
So, you know, people in Cedar Rapids, a lot of people in Iowa have these buses. They're all over the place. Well, doesn't, doesn't, doesn't, is the one shuttle in town still that'll run you to the microbreweries? Yeah.
• 27:50
So that's, uh, one time, I don't know what he does now, but it one time was five bucks for the day, and then you could go from Pulpit to Top and Goliath, and he would take you down to Kalmar, to, uh, um- Pivo...
• 28:01
Pivo, yeah. Yeah. So and it was five bucks, just jump on and go. This is just an all the time thing? 'Cause it says- Yeah, I, I think it runs like weekends mostly, but now he- he's got like a fleet of them now. Yeah.
• 28:10
So I, I, I don't... Well, there's so many people in town that wanna go to all these bars, and like, like I said, the visitors that come, I'm not kidding when I say people come from all over the world to buy these beers.
• 28:20
[coughs] And it's like, um, what is it, Kentucky Brunch? They made like a oat meal style something. I don't know. It's $100 for a 12 ounce bottle, and they sell out every time. Mm-hmm.
• 28:31
And they sell out immediately, but people come and the brewery's really nice. Um- Well, and, and the brilliant part is he, he built the brewery right across the street from the, uh, airport. Yeah. Yeah.
• 28:40
But it's- Oh, yeah... yeah, you have to fly in on a private plane pretty much. [laughs] Well, yeah. And, and pe- but people do. That's the thing. They do. The cool thing is, is they do do that. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. So
• 28:51
what were we saying? Oh, yeah, the buses. Okay. [laughs] The RAGBRAI buses. We'll just put out a call and be like, "If you're coming from somewhere and you wanna bring people, can you bring your bus?" But I don't know.
• 28:59
Would we have to have parking? Well, you, we could make- Yeah, where are people gonna park all their buses? Can we park the buses in Folky's lot? Just dump them off. Maybe.
• 29:07
Maybe, or the, um, the old Walmart has a big open parking spot. But- Oh, yeah... this is the VA clinic. No. Uh, I don't want to be going across 9. Yeah. Or you can go underneath 9. Oh, right.
• 29:17
The bridge is right over here. Or, or what's happening on 9. Yeah. On the bridge, yeah. So- Because there, because there is an awesome paved trail down here too that people can go. Oh, yeah, we forget about that. Yeah.
• 29:25
We got a 13 mile paved, uh, loop that goes through town and through, yeah, the Trout Run Trail. And we could easily do- Still haven't done that actually. [laughs] Seriously? Yeah.
• 29:33
[laughs] You Miss Rhody, you haven't done it yet? Yeah, I know. It's surprising. Whenever I come to Decorah, I always do mountain biking.
• 29:38
Is it, I was gonna say- And if I am gonna do Rhody, I do the Prairie Farmer Trail- Yeah... from Presque to Kal. Because you can do time trial style because it's flat and straight. Get my- See the-... Strava wins. Yeah.
• 29:48
Get out of here. [laughs] I gotta do Strava. Just had to throw that in there. Yeah. Oh, are we gonna start this shit again? [laughs] Just had to throw that in there 'cause I'm a biker too. No, we have a new...
• 29:55
We're gonna use Strava in the fire department because we can, like, make routes, and then when we have to search for somebody, we can say, "Okay, route one is done.
• 30:02
Route two is done," and then we can all have Strava on our phone so we can use it that way. It's gonna be the slowest Strava ever. [laughs] Did you, did you just say, "Sorry, I'm old"? [laughs] No, I had to download it.
• 30:13
They're like, "Do you have Strava? Can we do this?" I'm like, "Damn it." [laughs] "I need Strava now." Some people take Strava very seriously. Can, can, can we do, can we do it on MapMyRide instead?
• 30:21
'Cause that's more casual. No. Why? We can't be friends if you're gonna make me MapMyRide. No. Why? 'Cause- I, I don't use either one... Strava's better. Oh, sorry. [laughs] I'm gonna endorse Strava. Yep.
• 30:34
Oh, maybe we can be a sponsor. We'd have to put a sign up then. Forget it. Not gonna happen. [laughs] You just have a little spot on your jersey and it's like This podcast is like 10% SingleSpeed USA. [laughs] Yeah.
• 30:46
Keep trying to get back to it- Yeah... but, you know. Okay, so Bar in the Cornfield RAGBRAI Bus is, again, it is August 20th. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. What are...
• 30:55
You had- Well, Sunday- You have this little journal here- Yeah... with all these great ideas. Let's hear them. Um, it's just a list of bars, essentially. [laughs] [laughs] You don't need to write those down.
• 31:06
Now, now hold on. Now hold on. Are they categorized? What it is... No, in no particular order- Okay... and it's... at all.
• 31:11
[laughs] Um, now, when we, when we attempted to go do productive things before Chewy couldn't get into your house and we came back- Mm-hmm... uh, we passed a statue of a Norwegian guy with, holding a pie, right?
• 31:25
[laughs] What? Yeah, so a family table. What? So what I was thinking would be a poker run of sorts, like places to go, things to do and see, and, like, iconic, I guess. Like a SingleSpeed scavenger hunt?
• 31:39
If you, if you, if you wanna use the word iconic, things to see and do in Decorah while you're here. You can do that. Statue of a Norwegian guy holding a pie, and/or- They're called Vikings.
• 31:48
[laughs] He literally has a horned helmet and a beard. [laughs] A Norwegian guy. [laughs] I w- Are all Norwegians Vikings? Most. No. No. Okay. Good point. There's gnomes and nisses. Yeah.
• 32:03
And to see- Things, thing, things you can learn when you come. Ogre is blasting up and down the street on his dirt bike. [laughs] Oh, he's cool.
• 32:11
So point is, is there, if we wanna make a longer list besides just a statue with pie- [laughs]... of things to do and see- That is the thing... while you're here. No, that's the key. Here he comes. Look at that.
• 32:22
He's just dirt biking out there. [laughs] Oh, it's just a little kid bike too. Is that, is that Ogre's kids? Oh, that's cute. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, that's cute? That's cute, Ogre. Yeah, him and Kevin. You like arm wrestling?
• 32:33
[laughs] Oh my God. Do not let me arm wrestle that guy. [laughs] So with... I'm trying to think what else. We have ice cave you could go see, which is, it'll, it has ice year round. Um, Dunning Springs, the waterfall.
• 32:48
Um- Is the, is the course going by- You can go feed some trout... um, Glory Hole? Go out to the fish hatchery. Yeah, we'll do Glory Hole on one of them.
• 32:55
Just because Glory Hole's cool because there's actually a spot that we can put beer in, into the, into the rocks, and- Yeah... and it keeps it cold. I mean, it's, it's fantastic. That's amazing.
• 33:03
There's, there's ice in the bottom of this little, I don't know, it's probably like four feet in, and there's always ice in there, so we just put beer in there. Yeah. And, uh- Unfortunately-... we call it the Glory Hole.
• 33:12
[laughs] Yeah, unfortunately, the college kids have found it, so r- the beer doesn't stay very often. Ah.
• 33:15
Because before it was like whoever was last one to drink the last beer would go up there and put more beer in it, right? Yeah. And now it's not quite that way because the beer's always gone.
• 33:23
College kids are like, "Oh my God." Kids found it, yeah. "Look, a miracle." "Look, this is amazing. There's beer, just grows out of this wall."
• 33:29
And they're college kids, so we can't put shitty enough beer in there that they won't drink it. [laughs] There's nothing that we drink that they won't. [laughs] So what else is there?
• 33:39
Um, well, we talked about also Sunday Bluffton ride. So Bluffton is this bar 13 miles out of town, all gravel, and you ride there, and it's bluffs on one side, river on the other. Um, little dive bar, 70 people.
• 33:52
Just do like a Sunday, say 10:00 AM ride out there. You get there at noon, have a few beers, come back, and you're back to town by 3:00 or 4:00. Um, it, it depends how long people wanna stay.
• 34:04
Sunday's kind of a crap shoot. Yeah. You know, like we build from SingleS- You guys stayed a little bit longer at, uh, in Maine. Mm-hmm.
• 34:12
We kind of built- Which is what I'm, which is what I'm getting at, is if you're coming from elsewhere... Apparently Jesse forgot to do something. [laughs] It's me. No, if you're coming from out of, out of state...
• 34:25
  I don't know. I don't know what's happening. I don't know what's- There's a, there's a potential emergency in the kitchen. I don't know. [laughs] The kitchen's- If you're coming from out of state- Yes...
• 34:32
why are you coming? It's, that's- Well- You have a date. Uh, there's gonna be a bike ride. Friday there's tubing. Saturday there's a bike ride. Sunday there's a, a tour to a dive bar. All fantastic ideas, but
• 34:47
just trying to lay it out there for those coming from elsewhere. Well, the, the cool thing is... [dog barks] Oh. Good, good puppies. There. So if you're, if you're coming from- Well, my point is-...
• 35:01
anywhere away, these are all great things. I just- Right. My point- What are, what are you coming for is the thing. My point is, is that you- What are, what are you gonna do while you're here?
• 35:07
He's bringing in a giant traffic cone. [laughs] Oh. Oh. Oh, yes. You brought this as- You brought that back from... [laughs] Oh. Now, for those that- Tell me the story here... for those that cannot see- So th-...
• 35:21
there is a, there is a- Oh, okay... a road obstacle. So there was a, one of the guys that was at SingleSpeed USA in Maine, that was attached to the front of his- Well-... pickup... d- but it not attached.
• 35:34
It was stuck in the wheel well. Well, it, it- 'Cause he had struck it while driving. [laughs] And it was stuck- He had jacked up F-350, yeah... it stuck into the wheel well of his truck. Oh. Like it got in his truck.
• 35:42
[laughs] And, uh- Wow... it, it became kind of a, of a, you know, an icon of sorts. Yeah. You need a picture of that. I'm just- Piece of memorabilia. Yeah. Uh, yeah. The, the horses really like it. Yes.
• 35:53
Where, where were these... So yes, it was, it was- So Kat-... brought home from- Maine... Maine. Road tripped all the way back to Iowa.
• 36:01
We were just about to leave, and then Kat goes, "Wait a minute," and he shoved that in our truck. [laughs] That's true. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah. Is this legal?
• 36:06
And we gotta drive through seven states with this thing hanging out of the back of the truck. [laughs] Yeah.
• 36:10
We, we stayed overnight in one hotel, and it was like in the back of the truck and nobody stole it, so we're like, "Oh, well, it's good." But, um, people signed it. They autographed it. Yeah. Yeah.
• 36:19
The horses, me and, and one of Kat's horses played with it. Where, where were these horses? That's the question. In Madison. In Madison. Yeah. South of it. Butt chug and chill.
• 36:28
[laughs] DJ signed it, and we have his Singles Wizard. Fuck you, Seth. Um- [laughs] Be more dumb. [laughs] The Dutch Hammer. Oh, yeah.
• 36:41
The best, the best part is, is like there's a, there's a portion of it that's actually missing from- The tire rubbing on it- Yeah... and I see the- I've seen the sticker before, "Go ugly early." Yep.
• 36:50
[laughs] Oh my [laughs] God. My favorite is the, "Not everything needs to be a sticker," sticker. [laughs] 'Cause it's true. There's a lot of stupid ideas. Yeah.
• 37:02
[sniffs] But anyway, so yes, if you're coming from elsewhere- There's n- you can-... Tubing Friday- There's no-... Bike Ride Saturday. There's... Oh my God. Are you putting a Return of the Robin sticker on there?
• 37:11
I s- I represent. Oh, good. I... No, I don't- Is that, is that the bus- No, I don't like that... that you drove us to Levitt's with? I just- Give me Mad Bar and give me some cool stickers, and I'll represent you.
• 37:22
There you go. Okay, fine. What are we representing? Single Speed- Is that, is that the bus that you drove us to Levitt's in? Yeah, yeah. We d- Yeah...
• 37:27
well, I did, I did rent, I, and I will say that I did rent Brett's bus one time and drove these guys to, uh, Levitt's Mound for Single- That was a good time... Speed USA when it was in Wisconsin. Oh, yeah.
• 37:36
That was a good time. And that was their original bus. The original bus, yeah. That bus, super cool. Oh, where's my phone? [laughs] That, that, that took me back to my- Is, is it-... childhood doing Ragbrai at age 10.
• 37:47
Nice. Lot of- And then roller skating. Would that help? [laughs] Different memory, but yeah. [laughs] My phone is going off. Is my phone in here? I think O'Gara's doing burnouts in my driveway again.
• 37:59
That, that's all of your phones? Sorry. No, I'm sorry. I'm doing, I'm doing seating for high school hockey right now, sorry. [laughs] And been w- Not like we're doing anything important.
• 38:06
We're going downhill on a slide of ice. Oh, my God, no, it isn't. Just, yeah. Um- How long have we been doing this? [laughs] Oh, we're, we're s- we're not quite at... Well, is, is our- [laughs]...
• 38:16
is our half hour really truly 40 minutes rather than a half hour? [laughs] You know, like, I was thinking about this when they did your concussion test [laughs] when you were in Omaha.
• 38:23
[laughs] Like, how you talk about things, like ask you your hockey schedule, "Well, we play Tuesdays or Thursday or maybe Satur- I mean, we will play, um, in a," you know, like you can't put together a full sentence normally.
• 38:32
[laughs] Yeah. What the fuck? [laughs] Yeah. What's, what's the base- And then now I get kind of slurred... what's the baseline- [laughs]... speech?
• 38:40
That would've been, that would, it would've been es- interesting if I didn't- Baseline... have a baseline to go by. Yeah. That would've been funny to see where I was at.
• 38:46
[laughs] I was, I, I, I pictured myself being like, um, you guys are too young, but on WKRP in Cincinnati- How old do you think we are? What the fuck is that? You don't- [laughs] See what it's saying?
• 38:59
[laughs] You're older than me. I remember that show. Yeah. We're the, we're the, we're the one, we're the... And he just passed away, but the one DJ- Yeah...
• 39:04
was like, they were doing the onli- on, on-air drinking, telling you how much, how bad his drinking is for you and how much drunk are you getting stuff. [laughs] And he just kept getting better the more drunk he got.
• 39:15
Mm-hmm. Oh, my gosh. I kind of figured my baseline would be the same way. It's possible. I believe it. Mm-hmm. But, all right, so what else we need to talk about? That? Is that the whole agenda for Single Speed?
• 39:26
I mean, I think that's- That's the- No, yeah... rough draft. It's a good start. The cool, the cool- Yeah... it's a good start... the cool thing about Single Speed U...
• 39:32
The cool thing about having Single Speed USA here is the fact that, uh, we were some- You have to admit, we were somewhat trapped in s- in Maine. We... Well, yeah, we, it was. It was remote. Yeah.
• 39:42
Um- And it w- was, don't get me wrong, it was cool, and it was a fantastic course. I, I think it was a perfect place to...
• 39:47
I had never been to Maine, never been to New Hampshire, so not living in that area, it gave me a reason to go. Yeah. So much the same way- I s-... you haven't been to, to Iowa or, you know, the region.
• 40:01
It's a reason to come. Right. Um- Well, and the cool, like I say, the cool thing is, is from here, if you wanted to, like, literally, let's say, tour the Midwest and go mountain biking, you, La Crosse is an hour away.
• 40:12
Minneapolis is- Rochester is really good. Rochester, yeah. I mean, there's- Trails... there's, uh, uh, it's basically an hour away, but there's a ton of places you can go riding that's within an hour of, of Decorah.
• 40:22
You know? So you can, whichever way you wanna go about it, stay here, go ride someplace else, stay someplace else, come here. Whichever way you wanna go about it, it's gonna be fantastic.
• 40:29
Which I, and I think it's, I think Decorah is a good place to be given the other option, given that Key West was the only [laughs] fucking other place that anyone was willing to- Oh, that, that's next year.
• 40:41
Well, that's its own thing. It's just gonna be Single Speed Key West. That's right. Oh. Yeah. But, but it was either Decorah or Key West- Sponsored by Single Speed USA. [laughs]...
• 40:51
because, because no one else gave a shit, and I think this is the better choice. What? Oh, having it here? Mm-hmm. Yeah. Okay.
• 41:01
So- So O'Gara's busted out his dirt bikes apparently and is just, like, doing shitties in my yard, which is not that big.
• 41:07
[laughs] Well, the problem is, um- So, so on that topic though, there needs to be a hosting competition. Yes. And there needs to be- I was just gonna say that... people participating in the fucking hosting competition.
• 41:19
[laughs] Well- Because otherwise, what you end up with is Pat and Jesse in a field in Maine competing for Decorah or Key West is just giant fuck yous. Yeah. And there needs to be another option.
• 41:31
So, but the pro- Well, here's the deal. If you have the party in the Midwest, we are very good at drinking games and doing stupid shit. Hence, the Busch Light curling tournament- Yep...
• 41:40
that we missed yesterday, where you curl- Oh, that's right... kinda sad about that. Yeah, that's unfortunate. Yeah, where you curl with a Busch Light 30-pack in a lasagna bin on the Mississippi River. Wait, lasagna?
• 41:49
Lasagna pan. So you put the- Oh... that's how it slides. Um- Gotcha. So, um- Where was that again?... if you're gonna have a Midwest party- Mm-hmm... I'm hoping Kansas City shows up 'cause I would like to ride there.
• 42:00
And I'm never- Yeah... gonna go to that shithole unless there's a Single Speed USA. [laughs] I, I'm with you on that, yeah. Okay. [laughs] Um- You just opened a can of worms. You know what?
• 42:07
Are, are they actually- [laughs] No, I just said that I, I hope I'm, I hope I'm, you know, saying this out of pocket. Are they, are they still actually, are they still actually running their races over there?
• 42:14
I don't know. The Single Speed races? Uh, I don't think they did it last year. They hosted in Texas until they hit each other in the head with their own gun. [laughs] Yeah. That's what I forgot about that too.
• 42:22
Somebody hit Thad in the back of the head with a- Yeah... Nerf gun. But, um, otherwise, like Nebraska- Yeah... Omaha could do it. Not, not the Nerf bullet, the gun. Oh my gosh. Yeah. Yeah. No, the, the, the, the- Yeah...
• 42:32
weapon itself thrown. Exactly, yeah. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. Well, no, yeah, they were shooting at the target- Mm-hmm...
• 42:38
and somebody got pissed and went over to move the target, and another guy just threw the gun at the target while the guy was walking to the target. [laughs] Hit him in the back of the head and laid there.
• 42:45
Like, "Okay, I guess, uh-"... whoever main. Who, [laughs] who else was in there? I can't remember who the other team was. Uh, West Virginia. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. And- Which, which by the way-...
• 42:55
there was a, there was a-... would be very cool to go to too, I think... there was a team, a team Grand Canyon- Yeah... 'cause Arizona cannot host.
• 43:00
Oh, is, oh, where did Arizona n- well, what- But it had to be specifically North Rim Grand Canyon. Okay. Well, what was the- Here, it was in Minnesota, and it was in Michigan, and then it was Wisconsin.
• 43:10
People started to get upset. They're like- Yep... "It never leaves the Midwest." And now it's been everywhere. Remember Iowa. You could mute me. [laughs] I did. You mute me when I'm talking about important things?
• 43:18
[laughs] Sorry. Relevant topics, mute. [laughs] This is getting too practical. Yeah, I know. [laughs] So, like, who's around here? You, we have Nebraska, we have... Arkansas is not far. No, um, we- no, Louisiana.
• 43:36
Oh, that was, that was a no. No? No, not Louis- no. That was a- That was, that was one of the other cars... that was, that was grasping at straws for something other than- Just somebody to host... yeah. Yeah.
• 43:48
Key West was supposed to be a joke, and then it turned into a, a potential reality. Yeah. [laughs] I got your, uh, postcard on the fridge here. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Take one of those too. So- I'll use this. So- [laughs]
• 44:03
When, how, how old are you? [laughs] I don't know. Why? Because we're gonna do a, a SingleSpeed Chewie when you turn 69, and it's gonna be in Key West. We got four years, then. Four, okay. All right.
• 44:13
I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna make it that long. We've gotta do it sooner. Can we do- [laughs] 60- Chewie's 69th birthday, two years early Well, you're wearing a helmet now, so you'll maybe last another four years.
• 44:23
[laughs] I don't know. I'm getting close to saying, "Screw the helmet again." [laughs] It's just that [laughs] I'm just gonna keep showing you the picture. [laughs] I showed Pat last night. Remember this? I did not know.
• 44:32
I, and I feel like you didn't tell me for a reason. Yes. [laughs] 'Cause I didn't know about this. Yeah, absolutely it was a reason. And if you listen to our podcast, you would've gotten the full recap. Yeah. Yeah.
• 44:42
[laughs] The picture just pretty much- Yeah... says it all, though. [laughs] I know. Well, y- so we were t- Jesse and I are sitting here at the counter having a beer, and he's like, "Did you see the picture?"
• 44:50
I'm like, "No. What picture?" [laughs] Uh-huh. "Oh, he's bleeding from the head." Did not get that one, no. In a Santa suit with Grinch pants. [laughs] Yep. So [laughs] that was even better.
• 45:00
And that's the j- yeah, that was- And, and by the way-... not-... all that stuff is g- is blood free right now. I see. The mask is kind of messed up, but the rest of it is.
• 45:08
That's one of the first things Sue told me, is like, "Oh, we got all the blood out." I'm like, "It's a red suit. Can you wash mine?" [laughs] 'Cause I had picked you up, [laughs] put you in the truck.
• 45:16
Yours is way more expensive than mine was. [laughs] They, uh, um, um, yeah, the, the, the one nurse, like, got in there, and she's just kinda like... Oh, I was taking the stuff off.
• 45:26
And, and the nurse goes, "Oh, just use blah, blah, blah. It'll take the blood right out of it." And Sue at home and did it, and it worked. Peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide.
• 45:34
But I would've thought that would've, like, taken the dye out of the suit and everything like that. Oh, like bleached it? Yeah. No, but it didn't. No. It's like, it looks brand new. Yeah.
• 45:41
Like, I still have Grinch pants I can- It probably looks cleaner than it was in the first place. [laughs] Every now and then I just, every now and then I just throw my Grinch pants on and walk around the house.
• 45:49
The detergent costs more than that suit did. [laughs] But at least we saved that, but yeah. Okay. Why does it keep coming back to this? I- Can somebody else have a catastrophic failure so we- So, oh, wait, wait...
• 46:00
can walk away from me? [laughs] There was gonna be, there was gonna be a parade, no? Oh, yes. The parade. For SingleSpeed? Yeah.
• 46:06
No, so when we do the f- stage one out at Twin Springs, which is a little bit out of town past the campground, and there's a trail that comes into town, and the trail, uh, meets right up with Water Street, which is the main street that goes past all the bars.
• 46:18
We'll have a firetruck lead us through town. Which- So not really a parade. I guess you can call it a parade. Oh, so the, Decorah has- It's up to us if it's a parade...
• 46:24
and you probably know this, but Kayla, but Decorah has a parade for everything. Yep. Like, they have a stock car parade. Every small town in Iowa- Last, last night... has a parade for everything.
• 46:31
There's a, there's a- What was it last night? So [laughs] speech team, speech team came back. [laughs] And speech team got to ride the firetruck through town at 10a- at 10 at night.
• 46:39
Uh, we were sitting in a tea box and a firetruck goes by with the speech team on top. [laughs] And then, and then- Okay, that's worse than Crestone. [laughs] Just saying. So- There's a stock car race.
• 46:48
They, like, like, all the stock cars, the first day of racing out at, out at the speedway, they all cruise through town. That's another thing. Yeah. What, stock cars? Well, 'cause we'll have...
• 46:58
The races will be going on yet. [gasps] So we can go up to the top of Palisades and watch the races. There's no way we can fit it all in one weekend. Well- And that's why I'm gonna do a ride for you...
• 47:05
there's a lot of options. SingleSpeed week. You'll not be able to do everything. Yeah. [laughs] 'Cause we're gonna start the crazy, the Kayla's Ride around Iowa. Which is the weekend before. The weekend before. Yeah.
• 47:14
Yep, I'm just gonna do it the weekend before. Which I can talk about here. It's not officially planned because- Since we're, since we're only 15 minutes old... I can't fit it all in one weekend.
• 47:19
These are all multiple events. It's hard to fit all of the awesome... Yeah, the event page and all the stuff. And the best part is none of this shit's gonna happen. [laughs] It's gonna happen. Okay. Yeah.
• 47:28
And people just show up. Yeah. It's magic. Yeah. We don't have to plan anything. Nope. Just go. So g- We made it... sorry. Go ahead. Get here, give me money. See you later.
• 47:35
[laughs] There will be no charge for my entrance. See, that, that, that's called- Almost-... SingleSpeed Arizona, and it's hosted by DJ, where you- [laughs]... you silently fund his...
• 47:43
This, this is next year's, this is next year's shenanigans, yeah. Yeah. So what are you doing the weekend before?
• 47:49
Um, so my RAGBRAI team proposed to me that I start a ride, and- You're bringing everybody on your RAGBRAI team? I'm gonna bring all the people. No, you, they proposed to you.
• 47:57
Remember, I'm the social butterfly that bikes with everybody, so I'm gonna try to- Oh, that's right... bring them down here. Okay.
• 48:02
And we're just gonna have a big party, but I'm having a hard time bringing all my favorite things into just one weekend. Because there's, like, going on the river. There's, like, seeing all the trails.
• 48:12
Plus, I wanna do Riceville and do that trail over there, and I hang out with the Rowdy Beavers, and they have a bar in Riceville. The Rowdy Beavers. The Rowdy Beavers. You don't know them?
• 48:23
Oh, I thought you said roadie beavers. Yeah, that's what I was gonna say too. Oh, the Rowdy Beavers. It's the, it's the same thing. Rowdy? It's the same thing 'cause there's no off-road riding in Riceville.
• 48:28
Roadies aren't rowdy. I mean, they're roadies, but- They think they are. Yeah. Okay. They're like, "Oh, we're gonna get really tough. We're gonna go have two beers tonight." That'd be a good team, Rowdy Beaver.
• 48:35
[laughs] The, the Rowdy Beavers in Riceville, they have their team clubhouse there, and it's a bar that the three sisters started up last year. Oh. So I wanna help bring business over there too. Yeah. Hmm.
• 48:47
And plus that trail is fun. That- It takes you all the way up to the Minnesota border, Minnesota-Iowa border, up to McIntire, and then it takes you all the way south down to Alma.
• 48:55
Wow But that would-- That's like a day in itself, and then there's the Cresco to Calmar shenanigans. That's always fun. Yeah, that's fun. Yep. And takes you out to Peveo, which is also another great brewery.
• 49:05
Well, actually, we do it the other way. Since you and I have done it- Oh, you do Calmar to- I do Calmar to Cresco and then back again because it starts and ends at a microbrewery. And then we got...
• 49:14
Those bloodies are good at the Fireman's. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that was- That's Ridgeway. Yeah. Yep. That's Ridgeway. I always stop in Ridgeway, which is like the only other stop, unless you bring your own beers.
• 49:24
It is the only other stop on the way. Yeah. [laughs] Other than... Unless you carry your own beer with you, then other- Well, you always bring roadies... which is, which is a weird thing because the only...
• 49:31
The cool place to stop that where you and I stopped at that little park that this guy built like a little, I don't know- He even put like a water fountain in there and like- Yeah, there's like a rest stop there.
• 49:40
And, but it's, it's [laughs] like literally less than a mile outside of, of Calmar. So you've done- [laughs]... the first 19 miles, it's like, "Hey, let's stop. Oh, this is cool." Then you're done.
• 49:47
Are you talking about the outhouse? Yeah, the outhouse place. Yeah. Oh, yeah. That was a cool stop too. Yeah. That's a good roadie stop. Yeah. We're down to 8% SingleSpeed USA. [laughs] Mm-hmm.
• 49:56
Well, so- I mean, go back to SingleSpeed USA then... so when you, when you, when you- I'm not stealing your thunder here... no, no... we're just trying to talk about things. [laughs] Yeah.
• 50:02
Is there- I, I- You brought up the topic of, of bringing business. Is there any kind of charity drinking that could be done? Charity drinking? Here. [laughs] With everything... All the drinking we do is charity.
• 50:13
[laughs] You know. Yeah. You fund our, our small local breweries. Some- No. Some kind of- Yeah. No, I, I- Some kind of benevolent drunk, you know? Like... No, I don't think so.
• 50:24
[laughs] But no, I mean, well, at, at SingleSpeed Wisconsin, we gave the leftovers to Levis Mountain and the trail crew there. I think it was like $2,000 we gave them for whatever.
• 50:33
So- I mean, there's like HOKA and other... Like, you could do even, um- Is there-... Humane Society... is there a fledgling bar somewhere that needs support?
• 50:41
Because that's, that's like when we were in Japan, for example, we, we happened upon a bar that was like on the brink of closing. Mm. And our participation, I'll call it- [laughs]...
• 50:52
uh, kept them alive, [laughs] kept the business running. So is there anywhere- It'll always be-... is there anywhere that needs that kind of support? Lupton might be for sale. I don't know.
• 51:01
No, we're not buying it, but we could. [laughs] We're not talking about buying it. We're just trying to bring business to- We're talking about keeping them alive. Yeah.
• 51:08
Why- If I buy it, we're gonna go there and spend money. [laughs] So that'd be the thing. I... Let's see. I'm retired. I could probably go... Could I... I, I'll work Monday through Wednesday, probably.
• 51:17
This is not what I'm, what I in- intended the topic to be. No. We're just- [laughs] Not... No... drumming up business for people.
• 51:23
Is there a place- And I don't mean, I don't mean to be a dick about it, but I don't like doing benefit stuff. No. Because, because that's... Well- No, he's just on the business realm...
• 51:32
because, because you and I are from Rochester, and, and in Rochester, you can't put on something without it being a benefit for some place. No, is- Yeah... let me rephrase the question. You guys are insane.
• 51:40
Is there a bar on the brink of collapse that we need to- [coughs]... keep- Not in Iowa... keep... [laughs] Okay. Enough said. Perfect. Yeah. No, I think we're good. Yeah. Um- So- Everybody will appreciate the benefits...
• 51:52
so SingleSpeed Month is in Iowa. It's the month of August. Okay. [laughs] So- It's, it's the first, it's the first- Yeah, I'll just come down and work remotely. It's just- Yeah...
• 52:01
SingleSpeed Month is the first August of every Monday. Yes. Yeah. Don't, don't ask. What? [laughs] Don't ask. Don't. Just don't ask. [laughs] This might've been, this might've been a slip-up on my part. What?
• 52:15
What was, um, what was it? Shirt Cock. Shirt Cock Monday was the first- February of every Monday. Tell me more. [laughs] Um, did, did Dirty start that? No, it was Kerry. Oh, that's right, it was Kerry. Cold Hands.
• 52:29
Kerry Cold Hands. Yeah. So there was, there, there was... We were... I don't, I don't... Explain. I can't. [laughs] I can't talk. Uh, it was, it, it was stupid. Um, Shirt Cocking.
• 52:41
She's like, she called it Shirt Cock Monday, and then it, it was determined that Shirt Cock Monday was the first February of every Monday. And, and Shirt Cock- It doesn't, it doesn't work...
• 52:50
and Shirt Cock, is that, is, is that- It's like Poo Baron. Yeah. You know? You were- [laughs] Poo Baron. [laughs] Donald Duck? Donald Duck, yeah. [laughs] Yeah, Donald Ducking, Poo Baron, Shirt Cocking. Yeah.
• 53:00
Oh, my gosh. It's all the same. Wow. And, and Dirty was all in favor of it because that's what he did, I think he did it every Monday anyway. He just walked around with a T-shirt. That's it. Mm. When it was...
• 53:08
He was- I- Was that when he was living with you? Oh. He's never lived with me. [laughs] Thank fucking God. [laughs] And I've... And surprisingly enough, I've never seen him pantsless either.
• 53:20
That's- That's to my knowledge... I don't believe that. I don't believe that. [laughs] The, yeah, I'm not buying that either. That can't be true. Yeah. No, he's rather- There was, there was the time that we...
• 53:28
Kerry paid for our tattoos, and he passed out clutching a gallon of water in his apartment. This is, this is a number of years ago, though, so. That was when the place they lived, that was not too far from your place?
• 53:38
Mm-hmm. Okay. Yeah. That was a, a, a ride that never happened. [laughs] We went to lunch and ended up with tattoos. Just like this morning. Just like today. Yeah, we- Yeah...
• 53:48
we were gonna go ride South Mountain for Phoenix, and we- Yeah. I'm not recording this, by the way. Oh, great. [laughs] You haven't been recording? The... No, he's lying. I see the record button. Yeah.
• 53:55
I don't know how to do all these buttons, but I'm pretty sure if that's lit up, then- It's easy. If I can do it, anybody can do it... the red one, the red one that says record is lit. Yeah, I'm pretty sure.
• 54:01
[laughs] Yeah, that was a ride. We were supposed... It was, it was the, it was the Sunday after SingleSpeed Arizona, and this was probably 2011 maybe. So a number of years ago. And we intended to go ride.
• 54:15
We went to lunch, and then flash forward, it was 10:00 PM, and we all had tattoos. Sounds like a fun time though. So- Oh, yeah. Yeah. Always fun. Every...
• 54:24
The, the trips to Arizona have always been- Got people climbing trees out here... so much epic. There's so many distractions today. [laughs] What's with these big windows? You should- You have weird neighbors...
• 54:33
you should- Yeah. Like, I thought my neighbors were weird, but this is very entertaining. [laughs] Wow. All right. It's a weird neighborhood. Welcome to the hood. Anybody wanna do a recap so we can get out of here?
• 54:41
We got two minutes left. What'd we talk about? I don't even- I don't even know... I don't remember. [laughs] This is a hangout. Oh, it's been an hour? We can't do... Yeah. Shit.
• 54:49
Uh, don- Well, you can, you can whittle this down to- I'm surprised it's only been an hour... three or four minutes. Yeah. Well, we got enough time before you gotta leave.
• 54:54
We can drive around and do, like, a high level- Is that-... here's the bars, here's the trails, here's the bars, here's the trails. All right. Is that what we're gonna do next?
• 54:59
Is that why you brought beers out, so we can do roadies, or what are you doing? Hey. I saw there's a beer can in the- We drank 'em all. I, I have NA beers left.
• 55:07
I bought NA beers when I moved into the house for my non-drinking friends, and they're still there. [laughs] Because you don't have non-drinking friends. [laughs] Well, you might soon. We'll see.
• 55:17
[laughs] If you don't drink, you're not my friend. [laughs] Well, I still have beer left over from Kayla's, from the last podcast that Kayla brought. Like, the- I feel like we put a pretty big dent into it last night.
• 55:28
[laughs] Not by, not by looking at- I looked in the sink and it was just full of beer cans. Not, not by looking at my... Oh, last night? Yeah. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. We did do...
• 55:34
We kinda kicked its ass last night a little bit. We drank at your house? Yeah. Yes. After the bar. Oh, buddy. Oh, boy. Oh, buddy. We, the, we got- It was an oh boy...
• 55:44
we shut down the bar and then went to your house and drank? Yeah. Like I said, I've never, I've never been to the Haymarket when the lights have come on. Okay. Or that I remember the lights coming on.
• 55:51
That's probably important. Yeah, yeah, yeah. [laughs] I was surprised you guys are still there, 'cause it took me forever to get from the bar [laughs] to your place, 'cause I was dropping off all the girls.
• 56:00
Oh, yeah, 'cause you had to drop those guys off. Yeah. Oh, my God. That was a shitshow. Well, I wasn't, I wasn't sure about these two, whether they were gonna just, like, fall asleep on a couch or something,
• 56:10
or face down in the- Well, yeah, I knew Spinner was gonna be passed out somewhere. [laughs] Yeah. Face down in a chair. Yeah. [dog barks] Uh-oh. I think Gavin's here. Okay. Is it? Somebody's here. All right.
• 56:21
Let's, uh, let's blow out of here. [dog barks] Thanks, everybody. [dog crashes] Uh, Jesus. Rudy just fell up the stairs. [laughs] Rudy fell up the stairs. Yep. [laughs] Yeah, can we, uh, we gotta go. Gotta go.
• 56:31
Dogs are playing. And that's a wrap. August 20th. [upbeat music] Probably. Probably. Probably August 20th. In case you didn't hear the, like, million times, August 20th. Thanks again, you guys. Talk to you later.
• 56:41
  [laughs] [upbeat music]
