- 0:00What's up y'all? You're listening to the Extra
- 0:01Point college football podcast. I'm your host Jacob Carnes,
- 0:04joined as always by my Co host Daniel Hammock.
- 0:07Daniel, we have made it to week 11.
- 0:10We've got some playoff rankings. So we'll we'll talk about that
- 0:14here at halftime of our show. What we'll compare our updated
- 0:17XPR with the first College Football Playoff rankings.
- 0:21Some some interesting Nuggets there.
- 0:23I'm excited to discuss we're going to talk some coaching
- 0:26carousel here at the at the top of the show here.
- 0:29We'll we'll do our our normal second quarter 2 questions we
- 0:31have after this past week of games.
- 0:34We'll go into three games. We're excited to watch 3U
- 0:37matchups to watch and then 4 picks against the spread for
- 0:41this week's biggest games, including Texas Tech and BYU,
- 0:46Missouri and Texas A and MI win, Oregon, Alabama and LSU.
- 0:50Daniel, how you doing? We've this is for sure the
- 0:54fourth quarter of the season. It's November.
- 0:57Yeah, things are heating up. Yeah, it's like I'm always wary
- 1:03about the season getting too far along because all the sudden
- 1:07before you know, it's it's gone. But November is the best month.
- 1:11You know, I, I mean, I always think in my head, this is just
- 1:15separate from football, but I always think in my head, Hey,
- 1:18October is my favorite month. But really it's November because
- 1:21you start putting Christmas decorations up, the commercials,
- 1:24the rivalries, College Football Playoff ranking start coming
- 1:28out. It's really think, you know,
- 1:31Thanksgiving, November's where it's at.
- 1:33So this is this is a great spot to be in.
- 1:36I feel like this is the most coaches and the biggest jobs
- 1:39we've ever seen open at the same time at this point in the
- 1:42season. So it was almost like we had to
- 1:44do it. There was there is no
- 1:46opportunity to miss coaching carousel talk.
- 1:49It was beginning to dominate our conversation anyway.
- 1:52So you know what, we pivoted. It's part of the four quarters
- 1:55now. So you know what?
- 1:57Let's get into it. And we're not done yet, I don't
- 2:01think with this coaching carousel.
- 2:03So Daniel, here's where I want to start.
- 2:05There's several jobs open. Like you said, it's the earliest
- 2:09we've seen it open right now. Let's let's do this.
- 2:13We're going to have a cool graphic after this we're going
- 2:14to post because I think 3 is an interesting cut off.
- 2:17What to to you right now? What are the top three jobs
- 2:20available given what we know, what we think about these jobs,
- 2:24what we think we know about these jobs, Give me your top
- 2:27three. I think 3 is an interesting cut
- 2:28off because I think there's like 4 jobs you would consider like
- 2:32top tier jobs, right? Give me your top three.
- 2:35My top three. For me is is easy right now.
- 2:39I think that for me there's a clear cut off between 3:00 and
- 2:414:00. Me too.
- 2:43So LSU is #1 even with the governor getting his hand and
- 2:48everything, if you'd asked me two weeks ago, I would have said
- 2:52LSU emphatically, no question about who is number 2.
- 2:57Yeah. But for what it's worth, I'll,
- 2:59I'll stop there. LSU #1 #2 Florida, there's just
- 3:02too much elite talent accessible right there.
- 3:07You got world class institution and then, you know, just
- 3:11obviously winning history. You can win the national
- 3:13championship in Florida. Great fan base, great home
- 3:15stadium #3 E Penn State. Penn State.
- 3:18I think that they criteria for me to be one of the top jobs in
- 3:23the country. You have to be 1 of the top 2
- 3:25conferences. You have to be the Big 10 or the
- 3:27SEC Yeah. And it.
- 3:31So you have to be able to have that as an opportunity.
- 3:33You have to be able to win there.
- 3:35And I I just think that Penn State has a very defined
- 3:41difference in this new landscape of college football.
- 3:45Above who I would presume is your other one when I had #4
- 3:50just outside of this list, which is Auburn.
- 3:52All right, we've got the same top two.
- 3:54Yeah. I mean, LSU just hired a
- 3:56president and athletic director very quickly, Athletic director
- 4:00Josh Pate said. Has been there since they picked
- 4:02purple and gold to be the school colors, which which I think is
- 4:05cool. So like two people who get LSU
- 4:08and the governor's shut up for the past few days.
- 4:11So yeah, number one job far and away so long as that.
- 4:15I mean, dude, he's like a cartoon character so long as he
- 4:18stays quiet. 2 is Florida for all the same reasons you said.
- 4:21Three, I've got Auburn and I was pretty, I was pretty clear cut
- 4:24about Auburn. I did a poll on Twitter.
- 4:25I got 5050 split. So I think that's, I think
- 4:27that's fair. My thing with Auburn over Penn
- 4:29State is in the new landscape, everybody's got money.
- 4:33Auburn has spent better than Penn State so far in the new
- 4:36landscape. They've also recruited better
- 4:40than Penn State in the new landscape.
- 4:41And I, I'm with you on it's got to be an SEC or a Big 10 job.
- 4:44And I also think like best jobs. I, I'm going to this Daniel of
- 4:48if all things are equal, it's the best head coach in the
- 4:50country. Where can you go and win, you
- 4:53know, the fastest, the best, the longest, whatever?
- 4:56And obviously the best head coaches can win in any of these
- 4:59places. Like you put Nick Saban at Penn
- 5:01State or Auburn, he's still going to win national
- 5:03championships. That's, that's, that's just
- 5:04what's going to happen. You know, Nick Saban of a few
- 5:07years ago at least. But to me, Auburn or Penn State,
- 5:10you know, sure, the the TV money is better at Penn State, the
- 5:13alumni base is bigger, but money is not a big differentiator.
- 5:17And like I said, like Auburn has spent more so far than Penn
- 5:19State on recruiting and roster building.
- 5:22I didn't go to Daniel. I, I think some of the stuff
- 5:24that for a little bit went away, I think some stuff that's going
- 5:28to come back when, when everyone's making money and all
- 5:31things are equal, I think location is going to matter.
- 5:33I think especially in this transfer portal era of kids,
- 5:37that I just think access to local talent will matter more.
- 5:42And Penn State is in the middle of nowhere.
- 5:45Like State College is 4 hours from the biggest city in their
- 5:48own state, much less access to big, big talent beds up at Penn
- 5:53State. It's just going to be
- 5:54interesting. You know, again, you put a top
- 5:55coach up there, they're going to go win.
- 5:58I also think it's interesting that their top 2 candidates have
- 6:01already signed extensions and said, I'm good.
- 6:05Like Matt Rule and Kurt Zignetti are like, we are happy where we
- 6:09are. Because in in my mind that means
- 6:12obviously there's personal stuff that goes into that, right?
- 6:15Maybe they love the city, their kids love it, they've got a
- 6:18family, they want to raise their kids there.
- 6:21I'm sure some of it also is expectation, right?
- 6:24Like cursing daddy especially. You can go be the greatest coach
- 6:26in Indiana football history if you keep doing what you're
- 6:29doing. There's not an expectation of
- 6:32national championship or bust, which is exactly what why James
- 6:35Franklin lost his job was because 2024 was natty or bust.
- 6:40So I, I just think it's interesting their top 2
- 6:42candidates have already signed extensions.
- 6:44I also think the advantage Penn State has over Auburn though, is
- 6:47that there's not as many barriers in your way to a title
- 6:52in your conference, right? You they don't have a huge in
- 6:55state rival that is the, the, the bar right in Alabama.
- 6:59I just think Auburn's a better job.
- 7:01I mean, dude, they just fired a coach who brought home 7
- 7:04national championships to the school this year.
- 7:06But in all seriousness, we said this a few years ago when
- 7:09Voorhees freeze got the job on this podcast that you know,
- 7:12every Auburn coach of the last, I think it's 3 decades has at
- 7:16least played for a national championship at Auburn.
- 7:19It's until Brian Harson and until he Freeze.
- 7:22I just it's it's a place where you can win.
- 7:27I was doing it just fine. We we've been on that for a
- 7:29while. I think that's past.
- 7:30But yes, Auburn's my 3, Penn State's my 4:00.
- 7:33I could go either way there. But when I was pretty
- 7:36emphatically Auburn whenever I was looking at it.
- 7:39So I'm I'm glad we disagree there.
- 7:41Yeah, My biggest thing is, you know, when, you know, we're
- 7:44both, it's funny, we both say new landscape, but we're talking
- 7:46about different things. You're talking about access to
- 7:49players and money and all that kind of stuff.
- 7:52I'm more interested specifically in both of them, Like Penn State
- 7:57broke free from their old schedule of playing all Ohio
- 8:01State and Michigan every year. Auburn got locked into it long
- 8:05term because there was a lot of questions about what the nine
- 8:09game SEC schedule, if that was going to happen.
- 8:11It officially got approved just a couple months ago.
- 8:14And I guess last month, whenever this was and whenever that
- 8:17happened, Auburn essentially found out, hey, you're official.
- 8:20You're you're going to keep the Deep South sole of rivalry.
- 8:23They are by themselves on the plank as the only team in
- 8:28college football, Jacob that has to play Alabama and Georgia
- 8:31every single year. Every Tennessee was meeting at
- 8:34those same meetings every week with them when they were saying,
- 8:37you know, hi, my name's Tennessee.
- 8:39I also have to play Alabama and Georgia every year.
- 8:41Tennessee got off of that with this new schedule update.
- 8:44They're going to play Georgia every other year.
- 8:46They're still going to play Alabama every year.
- 8:47So when that happened, I think that it increased the
- 8:52volatility, if you will, of the Auburn schedule.
- 8:54It's like those are not only there, are they too, you know,
- 8:58historically strong teams? It's just they they also run
- 9:03themselves extremely well as far as, you know, head coaches.
- 9:06And they don't have a lot of turnover and they're just solid
- 9:10organizations. Whereas Auburn, on the flip
- 9:12side, has had several different coaching changes.
- 9:15Your fan base is inevitably, inevitably going to measure you
- 9:21against those two every single year because there will always
- 9:24be AW or an L next to that game every single year because you
- 9:29have to play them. You have to measure up on the
- 9:31field. And you know, it's, it's just in
- 9:33the nature of the fans, they're always going to look at that.
- 9:35So, you know, it's tough for Auburn, but it's locked in.
- 9:38So, you know, the the the you mentioned that they've had those
- 9:43opportunities to play for national championships and stuff
- 9:45like that. Yeah.
- 9:46I mean, if they beat those two teams, it's almost like a quick
- 9:50it's, it's a supercharges you. Even if you have two losses, you
- 9:54could be right there in the forefront of, you know, in of
- 9:58college football that's you've gone through two of the toughest
- 10:01programs in the country. Penn State had that opportunity
- 10:03in the past with Michigan, Ohio State.
- 10:05Now they're able to just play, you know, a gallery of random
- 10:09Big 10 teams every year and and kind of avoid every year having
- 10:13to play those two teams to get out of the conference.
- 10:15I mean, my only my, my, my disagreement would be, well, I
- 10:19mean, they played Oregon and Ohio State this year.
- 10:21They lost both. Next year they play Michigan and
- 10:24USC and Washington. We'll see how their team looks.
- 10:28Auburn has beaten Alabama and Georgia more often than Penn
- 10:31State has beaten Ohio State and Michigan in the playoff.
- 10:33Yeah. And I think that is so I think
- 10:36the, I agree with your argument. I think it's, I believe Auburn
- 10:40could beat Alabama and Georgia more often than Penn State can
- 10:43beat beat Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, because I've seen it, it
- 10:46doesn't mean it can't be done, but I've seen it be done at
- 10:49Auburn. And so, and then if you do,
- 10:51you're in the national championship race as you should
- 10:53be. You beat Alabama, you're Reagan.
- 10:55I think every time they've beaten Alabama, they've been in
- 10:57line to play for it. Like 2017.
- 11:00They they win that SEC championship against Georgia,
- 11:02they're in. They beat both of them in the
- 11:04regular season. They sense why why UCF claimed
- 11:07the national championship at the end of that year, which is
- 11:10funny. OK, those are our top three
- 11:13jobs. Let's talk through some
- 11:14candidates here for all these. Let's start with LSU.
- 11:17Daniel, I've got 5 names in order.
- 11:21Who do you have as your hot board?
- 11:24You are the athletic director. You get to hire the head coach.
- 11:26This is not who we think is going to get it.
- 11:28This is you were in charge, who are you going to hire?
- 11:30Picking up the phone, I'm making one phone call and I'm making
- 11:33this person tell me no, OK, let's get Nick Saban on the
- 11:38phone. Let's have the conversation.
- 11:40People want to just dismiss it because look at what LSU, I
- 11:44mean, they went and got got the sitting Notre Dame head coach
- 11:47last time and brought him in. They swim in deep waters.
- 11:52This is not this. If there's one school in this
- 11:56cycle that is going to go head hunting for the biggest and best
- 12:00that they could get, they say he was out there.
- 12:03Now say what you will. Oh, he's happy.
- 12:05Everybody sees the video of him with his birthday cake and Miss
- 12:08Terry tell him to sit up and him looking like an old man.
- 12:11Make no mistake, this man has got his just for men and he's
- 12:15put it in his hair to dye it. OK.
- 12:17He is still presenting as a young man, OK.
- 12:21And it and he is a guy that I believe could absolutely take
- 12:25this job. Jacob All right, I'm not going
- 12:28to get too in on Nick Saban, but if there's one job he comes back
- 12:31for, obviously he can't go back to Alabama.
- 12:33That would just undo everything he'd let.
- 12:36He always mentioned how he left LSU too soon because he went pro
- 12:40and he did everything in Miami. They came back.
- 12:42He was able to exercise all that with with Alabama.
- 12:46But let's just see, man, I am not willing to say it's not
- 12:50going to happen. He has those relationships.
- 12:52If anyone's going to do it, this would be the only opportunity
- 12:55and it would be this cycle. It wouldn't be in 2-3 years,
- 12:58three years, whatever, because he'd probably come in and say
- 13:00something like I've got three to five years of coaching in me.
- 13:05And if there's a program that he could come in for three to five
- 13:07years and win a championship or two, LSU is at the top of the
- 13:11list. All right, I'm off of off that
- 13:14rocker. LSU is still going to go big
- 13:16game hunting. Lane Kiffin, obviously on that
- 13:19list. I think that this is a real
- 13:21list, more realistic option than Florida.
- 13:24So I don't have him on my Florida list, even though he
- 13:26should be considered, of course, at any, he should be one of the
- 13:29ones that's considered everywhere, especially SEC
- 13:31schools. So but LSU, I think that that is
- 13:34an opportunity for him. And #3 I've got Joe Brady and he
- 13:37was famously part of that. You know, he's with the Saints.
- 13:41Then he came and was the passing game coordinator, but he called
- 13:44some plays for LSU and they had, I don't know if it was if he did
- 13:48all the play calling out that year, Ensminger split it up with
- 13:51him. I can't remember exactly, but he
- 13:53was essentially credited with that offense being bananas and
- 13:57then but you know, having the greatest year ever.
- 13:59But he is offensive coordinator in the NFL right now for oh
- 14:04gosh, who is he with? It just left me.
- 14:06I'm looking he is with well. The Bills, he's with the Bills.
- 14:11I'm sorry. That a great podcasting
- 14:14everybody. So he's with the Bills.
- 14:17He's he's offensive coordinator Buffalo Bills.
- 14:20So. Brady, dude, I thought you met
- 14:22Steve Insminger. I was like, dude, he's still on
- 14:25staff. Now, yeah.
- 14:26Holy crap, they're the Bills together.
- 14:28No, that would be insane. Joe Brady is with the Buffalo
- 14:34Bills right now and they have an electric offense.
- 14:37That's mostly because the players.
- 14:39That's how that's how this works.
- 14:40Anyways. I think he would be someone I
- 14:42would consider coming back home, you know, being an NFL guy, come
- 14:47back to be the head coach of LSU.
- 14:50So Nick Saban, Lane Kiff and Joe Brady, in that order.
- 14:54I did the Joe Brady went interesting he's not on my list.
- 14:57I think this proven, proven coaching experience.
- 15:00Obviously he's an NFL AC is different.
- 15:03I we'll see. So my my hold up with Joe Brady
- 15:07is I need to do some deeper research on this.
- 15:11How often does it work out when you go get somebody from the
- 15:15glory days essentially, and how does it work?
- 15:19Like it's obviously not just a vibes play, but it's definitely
- 15:24a vibes play of you remember 2019, you know how big of a part
- 15:28Joe Brady was. Well, let's bring him back, you
- 15:31know, like, let's let's get back to the 2019 days.
- 15:33So that was interesting. I think he like, I have no idea
- 15:37how he is a coach. So that that name's interesting
- 15:39though. Trying to think of teams that
- 15:42have done this. Honestly.
- 15:43You know, what's funny is the only one I can think of was
- 15:44successful. Gus Malzahn was the OC of that
- 15:472010 Auburn team and then they hire him as head coach.
- 15:50Well Florida brought in the head, he was OC and he went to
- 15:55be a head catch. Fine, I know they fired him, but
- 15:57yeah, better than the current state, you know?
- 16:00Yeah, OK. My, I didn't have Saban on here.
- 16:03I I've at least read that that's not happening.
- 16:07You read all you want. My first call.
- 16:09Miss Terry's got a number. OK.
- 16:11Lane Kiffin My first call for LSU in Florida.
- 16:15Lane Kiffin has. I mean, at this point, I know he
- 16:18looks young. He has decades of head coaching
- 16:20experience. I think people forget that.
- 16:22I mean, I was watching highlights before the Notre Dame
- 16:25USC game of the Bush push, dude. Lane Kiffin's coaching to that
- 16:29game, man. He's calm, plays like he, he's
- 16:32been around this game a long, long time.
- 16:34He's got head coaching experience in the SEC, in the
- 16:37G5, in the NFL, like multiple stops in the SEC.
- 16:42He's matured a ton. I think he's got his life
- 16:45figured out right now. So you call Lane, you make him
- 16:48tell, you know, for both head coaching jobs, he is winning at
- 16:51a rate at Ole Miss right now where he could go down.
- 16:53It's your greatest coach ever. If you decide to stay and and
- 16:56keep it up, I think you bring him to a program at Florida or
- 17:00LSU and you allow him to then build a foundation of just a
- 17:04higher talent level that he's not going to get to Ole Miss
- 17:07from high school and then do what he's doing with the portal
- 17:09because he's getting kids to buy in, man.
- 17:11Like, I know we've talked about culture and hired guns and all
- 17:15this other stuff. Lane has done it so well because
- 17:18we've gotten multiple cycles now of proof in the pudding.
- 17:20And this team is not as talented as last year's team, but he's
- 17:24going to make the playoff this year with a less talented team.
- 17:27So Lane's my first call for both programs for LSU.
- 17:31Marcus Freeman again, I it's dumb because there should be
- 17:34fans that say we just tried the Notre Dame coach.
- 17:37We're not doing that again. It apples and oranges.
- 17:40I know it looks like that in the surface, two different people,
- 17:42Marcus Freeman, Jeff Brahms, my third.
- 17:45I think those are all proven head coaches that have one in
- 17:50big games. I mean big game Brahm.
- 17:53Then I've got 2. Like I say, more risk.
- 17:56My my 4:00 and 5:00 on all these lists are like more of a risk.
- 17:59So John Sumrall, I don't think that's a risky call.
- 18:02Again, I think that's the if you're LSU or you going to get
- 18:05the coach down the road from the G5 school.
- 18:08Same reason I think they didn't hire Billy Napier.
- 18:10I just think you're not going to do it at LSU.
- 18:12Last one, Daniel, Kevin, Kelvin Shepherd.
- 18:15You know who Kelvin Shepherd is? Yeah, former LSU player, current
- 18:19defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.
- 18:22OK, so NFL he's 37 years old. He's young.
- 18:28This to me is almost like a Marcus Freeman type coach where
- 18:32super young defensive guy like coordinator experience.
- 18:36Again, this is the risk of, to me, there's no science and
- 18:40trying to figure out who's going to be a good head coach because
- 18:43there's guys who check every box who get a job and fail.
- 18:45So it's it's all a crapshoot. Again, I think someone who
- 18:50understands the SEC and who understands LSU is important.
- 18:54A former player checks that box. He's coached in the NFL for the
- 18:57last four years, had a decent line.
- 18:59He stopped playing in 2018 for the Lions, and he's been outside
- 19:02linebackers coach, linebackers coach, defensive coordinator
- 19:05starting this year. In 2020, he was the director of
- 19:08player development at LSU, so he's also been on the staff.
- 19:11It's in some capacity. And this is going to be one of
- 19:13the biggest things for this hire to is I mean, people talk about
- 19:16culture and I think people think too much about like being Cajun,
- 19:20like they think of Coach O and all that.
- 19:23But it's really about the connection to former players.
- 19:25And so that's one of the biggest things that was, I guess,
- 19:29damning in the, you know, Brian Kelly, you know, saga, how that
- 19:34all started to play out was that he had not made it inviting for
- 19:38former players to come back and be a part of the program.
- 19:42And honestly, that's one of the greatest things about college
- 19:44football is like you're part of that fraternity forever.
- 19:47So why would you not want former players to be around the
- 19:51program? I think that that's what sparked
- 19:54Miami's resurgence. I mean, you know, obviously
- 19:56they're, you know, a couple losses now, but that's what
- 19:59sparked them to to do that. I mean, I think that there's
- 20:02several things you could say about, you know, players that
- 20:05have gone on to NFL success, especially that want to be
- 20:09around the program, what to invest in the kids that are
- 20:12coming behind them. So I think Shepherd to be, I
- 20:16mean, a slam dunk as far as that's concerned.
- 20:19I'm with you. OK, That's LSU.
- 20:23Do we, we could spend an hour on this.
- 20:25How about Florida? Give me your top candidates for
- 20:26Florida. I've already said Lane is my
- 20:28number one there, but you, you're the top candidates for
- 20:30Florida. I mean, I would call Lane if I'm
- 20:32Florida, I'm not going to my list.
- 20:34I mostly made of I know that you're not going to think
- 20:37realistic, but who I am actually projecting.
- 20:39So I projected Nick Saban, but I would I would call Lane.
- 20:42The other ones I would go with. I mean, Eli Drinkowitz is
- 20:45getting a lot of pub. I think that he does a lot of
- 20:49what like Florida likes, which is he runs his mouth and then
- 20:53he'll like back it up on the field and then he'll kind of
- 20:56rally his players. I think that he can kind of toe
- 20:59the line, though, better than some of the previous guys that
- 21:03Florida has had where his guys aren't having, you know,
- 21:08unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and things like that.
- 21:10It's more of like a him versus the other coach kind of thing.
- 21:13And I think that that is perfectly fine.
- 21:16I think his team plays hard for him.
- 21:18You know, we've jokingly referred to him as like the
- 21:21alpha nerd. And I think that there's a
- 21:23certain line of like, he's not going to take things too far in
- 21:27the sense that like, it's going to hinder their performance on
- 21:31the field. So his ultimate goal is for them
- 21:34to perform at the highest level. So I like Eli Drinkowitz,
- 21:37obviously offensive play caller, offensive mind has always done
- 21:42more with less so far at all the places he's been.
- 21:44I think he can get the most out of guys.
- 21:46So I think he's a good developer of talent as well.
- 21:48And he's been a pretty good recruiter at Mizzou.
- 21:52So you kind of put all that together.
- 21:54I think that maybe he could rise to the occasion at Florida in
- 21:57that regard. I also have James Franklin.
- 22:00I have him because I, I'm trying to be realistic, like if certain
- 22:04guys say no or they get locked in, James Franklin has SEC
- 22:08experience and he's going to be coming for one of these jobs.
- 22:11So he's going to, his contract is stipulating that he takes a
- 22:16job so that his full buyout gets paid.
- 22:18So he is going to take some sort of job somewhere.
- 22:22And I, he's a good coach. He's still a good coach.
- 22:25He's a floor raiser and I think that teams like Florida and
- 22:29Auburn could really use a floor raiser in this season.
- 22:33So I have him on the list. Can I, can I pause real quick?
- 22:38Franklin, please do. He is my #1 candidate for
- 22:41Auburn. I had.
- 22:42Him number one for Auburn as well, and Arkansas.
- 22:45OK, so to me, Fred, like I want to pause on Franklin.
- 22:50He's going to be a name that I think people are going to say he
- 22:53was just fired. That's going to look bad for
- 22:56Auburn, for Florida. It's look, he was fired because
- 23:00he publicly and internally put all their chips into this year.
- 23:04They lose to Oregon and I mean, first it was kind of dominating
- 23:09fashion. They come back to losing
- 23:10overtime. It breaks that team.
- 23:13This was a natty or bust year. Obviously hit his record against
- 23:17top ten teams is not good. But he is a floor raiser.
- 23:20Daniel. He won nine games at Vanderbilt.
- 23:22That's still not been done since three years in a row this year,
- 23:25three years in a row. We'll see.
- 23:27It might be done this year, maybe not.
- 23:29Yeah, Franklin is a floor raiser.
- 23:32I think he is the coach because if if you're Auburn, This is why
- 23:35I think Auburn and Arkansas too. If your stipulation is look at
- 23:40his record against top ten teams.
- 23:42Look at what he did against this goes back to our conversation
- 23:44about best jobs. Look what he did against Ohio
- 23:46State and Michigan. We have to play Alabama and
- 23:48Georgia every year. My, my response is this is,
- 23:51well, do you also want to beat Kentucky and Arkansas and
- 23:56Mississippi State? Because he is doing that 10
- 24:00times out of 10 and covering every single year.
- 24:04Like he, he beats every team he should and he loses the teams he
- 24:07shouldn't. He's gotten a couple upsets.
- 24:09To me, that's what Auburn had with Gus is you're not losing up
- 24:12to a like a back breaking game to a, you know, a five and
- 24:16seven. Mississippi State started to
- 24:18pick on them again, but and then he'd he'd occasionally beat.
- 24:22I mean he beat Alabama and Nick Saban 3 times, beat Georgia
- 24:25once. He to me is the perfect fit for
- 24:27Auburn because he's a floor raiser.
- 24:29I think you go get a coach who's going to guarantee you 9 and
- 24:32three because guess what, 9:00 and 3:00 and 10:00 and 2:00 is
- 24:35in the playoff in this modern era.
- 24:37That's what that means is you have a shot to win a national
- 24:40championship. If I'm Auburn, I am, it can be a
- 24:44perfect fit. They give me their first call
- 24:46and he's like, yes, fresh start in the SEC.
- 24:49He has to go look for a job. Yeah, Frank, one of me is
- 24:52interesting and I would be excited if I were an Auburn fan
- 24:55and they hired James Frank. Yeah, I I agree wholeheartedly.
- 25:00But that's that's the thing. I think Auburn and Florida are
- 25:02in the same kind of season. I think that as far as like in
- 25:06hiring, they both need a guy who's they've got a tough enough
- 25:10schedule every year anyways. Like let's beat the teams we're
- 25:14supposed to beat. Let's not have any mishaps
- 25:16against South Florida or you know, whoever.
- 25:19And like, let's just be consistent.
- 25:21And James Franklin's the model of consistency.
- 25:23So I think that both of those areas needs consistency.
- 25:27Other one with Florida, I'm kind of breaking a cardinal rule.
- 25:30I didn't even mention it against LSUI, didn't put John Summerall
- 25:33because the LSU boosters are not going to hire the Tulane coach.
- 25:38It's a whole yeah, the whole thing.
- 25:40It's just the mentality. While I'm breaking that with
- 25:43Florida and I'm saying that Alex Golish is an option, I think
- 25:47that you get to a certain point. I think Alex Golish at South
- 25:50Florida is someone you got to look at the way he did such a
- 25:54quick turn around and had made it them so legitimate so
- 25:58quickly. You have to consider that.
- 26:00I do get it. If Florida is at the point where
- 26:03they're saying I'm not going to grab another G6 head coach and
- 26:07I'm either going to take a coordinator or I'm going to take
- 26:09an experienced head coach from, you know, the Power 5 or you
- 26:13know, specifically like a James Franklin or whoever.
- 26:15I do get, I understand that. But you know, sometimes you just
- 26:19got to keep swinging. Like you said, there's no rhyme
- 26:21or reason and why a guy is successful or isn't right, and
- 26:24so you really have to take that chance.
- 26:26So I like Alex Golesh as another option for Florida.
- 26:29Yeah, I did too. I wonder if they're like you
- 26:31mentioned. I wonder if they're actually
- 26:32going to do it because of he's, you know, he's the coach of the
- 26:36the South Florida school. OK, you mentioned drink wits.
- 26:38I've got Jeff Brahm with my #2 for FM Florida.
- 26:41So I've got a three on the LSU board, 3 on the LSU board, 2 on
- 26:45the Florida board. Jeff Brahm is just a good head
- 26:48coach in I mean, he's his nickname is big Game Brahm for a
- 26:52reason. He likes to beat these top teams
- 26:55when he's an underdog. Now, he'll also lose the
- 26:59occasional, you know, Virginia get what we get.
- 27:02Virginia has one loss right now. So they're actually turned out
- 27:04to be pretty good. But he'll lose some of those
- 27:06games. But again, think about what he
- 27:07did at Purdue, which you could argue might be the worst job in
- 27:11the Big 10. You know, get given the year
- 27:14he's winning at Louisville, they went out.
- 27:16He's been in the playoff this year at Louisville.
- 27:18I don't think Jeff Brom is a good head coach.
- 27:20He's got a ton of experience. And again, this is this is all
- 27:24about the Staffs are going to hire to recruiting exchange in
- 27:26college football. He can go hire a good GM who can
- 27:29handle recruiting. He's a great football coach and
- 27:32getting teams to play to a high level.
- 27:34He gets quarterbacks to play to a high level.
- 27:36He's a great quarterbacks coach, which again, I think styles
- 27:39should not matter. But when boosters are paying for
- 27:42it, you got to appease to some fans and hey, those are two
- 27:46offensive guys. It's kind of what you want.
- 27:47If you're Florida, then you know, I've got 2 and then two
- 27:50reaches for Florida. Let me say this to Auburn.
- 27:52I've got Franklin Sumrall, which we've already talked about as my
- 27:55#2 call. I think that would be an
- 27:57amazing, both of those would be an amazing fit.
- 27:59My 3 on Auburn and my 4 on Florida's Glenn Schuman.
- 28:02I think that some of these sparkle has probably come off a
- 28:06little bit because Georgia's defense has not been as good
- 28:08than the last two years. I think their level of player
- 28:12just hasn't been as good the last two years for that Georgia
- 28:14defense. But again, Glenn Schumann's had
- 28:17head coaching opportunities. He's waiting on a big job.
- 28:20These are big jobs. He's an Alabama alum.
- 28:22I don't think Caitlin De Boer is going anywhere.
- 28:25These are the kind of jobs you finally wait for and take.
- 28:27I think he's taking the Kirby approach and that he's he's
- 28:29waiting for a big time FCC job because he can and this is the
- 28:33kind of job he would take. So that's that's a call I'm
- 28:36making if I'm Florida or Auburn and these other guys have said
- 28:38no. And then in the same boat.
- 28:40Well, this guy's a head coach, but I've got Fram Brown as my #5
- 28:43at Florida against Syracuse has not been as good this year.
- 28:47I don't think he's getting a call this year, but I'd call him
- 28:50given given what he can do on recruiting.
- 28:52He's a great coach. He's a player's coach.
- 28:54What it seems like so far. Lastly, for Auburn, Clark Lee,
- 28:58again, it's it's a crazy world where I said it's Clark, Leelee
- 29:01Vanderbilt. He's an alum.
- 29:02He can go down with the greatest coach in Vanderbilt history.
- 29:05If he keeps up, if he keeps winning, what's going to happen
- 29:07with Pavia leaves? I think this is like the year
- 29:09he'd leave if he's going to do it because I mean, it's
- 29:12Vanderbilt they could go for. Stocks never going to be higher
- 29:14than right now. Right, exactly.
- 29:17Brett Key I also put down for Auburn.
- 29:20Again, those are those are two coaches who are coaching at
- 29:23their alma mater. They leave for this job.
- 29:25I don't know, but stock at an all time high for both of those
- 29:29coaches. Well, that's one thing I was
- 29:32going to mention. So you've got Brent Key, you've
- 29:35got Clark Lee and you've got Jeff Brohm all coaching at their
- 29:40alma mater. But none of those three are like
- 29:45the the be all end all. You know, none of those three
- 29:47are, you know, it's not the end of the rainbow.
- 29:50Kind of a job like Kirby Smart going to Georgia was like,
- 29:54that's the job you wait for. And it's also where he went
- 29:57outside of going to the NFL or retiring.
- 30:00Kirby's not going to leave Georgia.
- 30:02But it's, you know, it's it's one thing that people have
- 30:05always drawn that line of Dabo to Alabama, you know, at least
- 30:09up until a certain point. And then it turned, you know,
- 30:11sour. But for a while it was like, oh,
- 30:13and Saban leaves maybe Dabo because he went to Alabama.
- 30:16You know, you always have home calling if it's a major school.
- 30:19But, you know, look, Nick Saban didn't coach it out.
- 30:22You know, he didn't coach at Kent State.
- 30:24He didn't go back to Kent State. You know, it's like their final
- 30:27destination does not have to be where they went played, played
- 30:31in college. So I agree with with several of
- 30:34those. Clark Lee, I think he's one of
- 30:36those guys that he's getting some love to Penn State.
- 30:39He's getting some love to maybe to those other schools.
- 30:42I'm going to give you my Penn State since that's my number
- 30:44three. I've got Jeff Brahm is my number
- 30:47one. I think he's probably more
- 30:49likely to be a Big 10 coach personally than an SEC coach.
- 30:54A lot of times people say, oh, if he's a good coach, he's a
- 30:56good coach, I get it. But regional stuff, I mean, I
- 31:00think that there is something to be said.
- 31:02You have to have some sort of ties to a certain extent.
- 31:06You have to have some relationships.
- 31:08And I think that he probably does.
- 31:11And there's probably just not as obvious of stuff that Brahm has
- 31:14done with some of the coaches in the SEC or, you know, gotten
- 31:19players out of the Atlanta and different things like that.
- 31:21I know they have recruited that area well in Louisville.
- 31:25Brian Hartline, offensive coordinator for Ohio State.
- 31:29Obviously, he's so famous for how just great at recruiting he
- 31:33is. And I think he's kind of I think
- 31:36he's going to be one of those guys that's kind of a program
- 31:37builder and can kind of oversee everything, but he's never fully
- 31:42been kind of on his own as an offensive, you know,
- 31:47coordinator. A lot of times it's been a Co OC
- 31:49or you know, he's overseen by offensive head coach and all
- 31:53that. So this will be interesting for
- 31:55him. Take that step out.
- 31:56I've got a few more. So at Campbell, I think is going
- 31:59to always come up anytime a big job is listed because I think
- 32:02he's great at Iowa State. I think a name that's underrated
- 32:05might be Manny Diaz, especially if they swing and miss out a
- 32:08couple of these at Penn State, like it seems like they might
- 32:12have already with Kurt Signetti and Matt Rule.
- 32:16If a lot of people keep telling them no Manny Diaz, he's that
- 32:19Duke. He was defensive coordinator
- 32:22there previously. So I think you can kind of look
- 32:24at the ties there. He's used to that.
- 32:27And I think that you you look in Manny Diaz, he's got Duke.
- 32:31A lot of people compare it. I mean, it's a they tend like,
- 32:35you know, institution and that they are a research university
- 32:38and all that kind of stuff. So you have to kind of recruit a
- 32:41different player anyways. Mandy Diaz, this is my reach.
- 32:45I think they might call Urban Meyer.
- 32:47There's a chance they call Urban Meyer.
- 32:51Penn State has never been necessarily one to be worried
- 32:55about. You know, I'm just kidding.
- 32:57As far as their, I don't know their overall persona.
- 33:00You're. Going to get us in trouble.
- 33:01I'm just trying to be careful about it.
- 33:04Penn State has not necessarily been the most ethical place in
- 33:07the world. And gosh, I don't know, maybe
- 33:10Urban Meyer finds a home there and Penn State could be a thorn
- 33:14in the side of Ohio State. Think about the public meltdown
- 33:18and Urban Meyer went there. I don't know.
- 33:21I don't know. I'm just going to throw that one
- 33:22out there. I did think we were going to do
- 33:24all these jobs, so I did list some for Auburn as well.
- 33:26I have James Franklin #1, John summerall #2, Brent key #3 for
- 33:31me. Also wild card name Brett
- 33:34Lashley. He coached his offensive
- 33:36coordinator there under Gus Malzahn.
- 33:38He's been the head coach. SMUI don't hate that move at
- 33:42Rhett Lashley. I also have him listed for
- 33:44Arkansas, potentially James Franklin for Arkansas, Dan
- 33:49Mullen for Arkansas. Another name to just keep out
- 33:52there in the ether is Eric Morris, North Texas head coach.
- 33:57He's really turned them around and got them going.
- 34:00So just kind of keep that one in your back pocket.
- 34:03Dan Mullen is also getting some play at Virginia Tech, Bobby
- 34:07Chesney from JMU, James Madison at Virginia Tech.
- 34:12So there's lots of names out there.
- 34:13James Franklin is in every conversation, I think, and if
- 34:19not the primary, he's at least like a backup somewhere.
- 34:21Yeah, I think those are interesting names.
- 34:23OK, well, Daniel, we've we've gone, let's see here, we've gone
- 34:2838 minutes on the couch, dude, it's a crazy.
- 34:32We haven't really talked about it in depth.
- 34:33There's a very long first quarter.
- 34:35There's a lot of time outs. Yeah, this was and.
- 34:38This was like the last two minutes of Georgia, Auburn, just
- 34:41it was 2 minutes game time, but it was 38 minutes.
- 34:47Yeah. Hey, shout out to newest member
- 34:50of the team and he's going to make a cool graphic with our our
- 34:53top five jobs, top five candidates for those you'll see
- 34:56on social media. So we'll keep you updated on the
- 34:58carousel. I don't think, especially LSU, I
- 35:01don't think this is happening before December at the earliest.
- 35:05Curious question I have to Dana, for all these jobs.
- 35:07If if you're LSU and lanes your guy and he's like, I'm
- 35:12interested, I want the job, but I'm not going to publicly take
- 35:16it until my team is done with, you know, with their season and
- 35:22almost the season goes into January.
- 35:25Are you willing to wait past the transfer portal window?
- 35:28You know, when like early signing day, past early signing
- 35:31day, Are you willing to wait? Because my thing is that is one
- 35:35class and there's no spring portal window this year.
- 35:37That's important. But that's one class.
- 35:40Yeah. But again, if it's your guy and
- 35:43you feel like you've got your guy, I think it's worth waiting.
- 35:47Which schools? You're going to be patient.
- 35:48Interesting to watch. Interesting to watch.
- 35:51So is that something else to keep an eye on?
- 35:53Daniel? We had some football games this
- 35:55past weekend. What are two questions you've
- 35:57got or your Your first question is we head into week 11.
- 36:01Well, we're. Fresh off of CFP rankings last
- 36:04night. So Yep, I'm going to have mine
- 36:07be relevant to that. How about is the new metric the
- 36:10CFP committee using for strength of schedule, is it or strength?
- 36:15Excuse me, it's called record strength.
- 36:17Is that going to get it right? We've famously, you know, talked
- 36:20about how they weigh the wrong things or they're watching
- 36:24games, you know, you know, button up shirts and, you know,
- 36:28eating sterile popcorn and you know, it's just dude, they're
- 36:33all putting their hats in. It's just like these people are
- 36:36not enjoying 1 lick of football like I want anyways.
- 36:39ANYWAYS, that's a whole nother conversation, but this record
- 36:43strength, I am interested in knowing what it what it will do.
- 36:47I I am trying to be positive about it because it does seem
- 36:51like they're trying to make an actual difference.
- 36:53And I love the sport. You love the sport.
- 36:55We want that to be good. My initial inclination from
- 36:58this, you know, record strength being added as far as the
- 37:02criteria that they're weighing heavily, look at look at Oregon,
- 37:09they're lower than they are in the AP poll.
- 37:11Do they have a win? I mean, God bless them for that
- 37:14win at Penn State. They're in the whiteout.
- 37:16It's just not going to get the kind of cachet because they
- 37:19broke Penn State that day. But what win is a good win?
- 37:23It really weighs good wins heavily and it does not punish
- 37:27for good losses, losing to a good quality opponent.
- 37:31On the flip side, it does kind of ramp up like a loss to a bad
- 37:35team and then it minimizes your wins versus good team.
- 37:38So for that that example I would point out like maybe Georgia
- 37:41Tech, Georgia Tech, it can only control what they can control as
- 37:44far as their schedule is concerned, but it does not weigh
- 37:48it super heavily when they beat Wake Forest, when they beat Duke
- 37:51or Syracuse without the quarterback.
- 37:53So looking at where they had them, they had Georgia Tech like
- 37:5717 or 18, I can't remember exactly.
- 37:59They had Oregon like 9 where the AP has them at 7.
- 38:04I think it's helping, but we'll see week to week as games play
- 38:11out, how much they change things.
- 38:13But I just, you know, this is my question.
- 38:15Is this record strength that they're looking at different
- 38:18from strength of record, this record strength metric that
- 38:22they're looking at? Is this going to be kind of that
- 38:24secret sauce that helps the committee kind of see the forest
- 38:27for the trees? I see a question, I want to see
- 38:29it be consistent. So I am holding my breath week
- 38:32to week to see if it'll be consistent.
- 38:35But yeah, I think you saw evidence of that already.
- 38:37Like you said, I mean, dude, Miami or I have more to say on
- 38:43that with our with our XPR in the in the playoff rankings.
- 38:45But that's a good question. My first one, Daniel, how many
- 38:48teams end up undefeated? We've got 4 left right now.
- 38:51We've got Ohio State, Indiana, BYU to say and M My guess is 2
- 38:58just percentage wise, I think you go down to one just it's
- 39:03hard to predict teams win every game, even if it's a 90% chance
- 39:07to win. You know, if you have a 90%
- 39:09chance to win three games, that basically gives you 2.7 wins.
- 39:17So yeah, you're still favored. But if you know, if you have,
- 39:21I'm getting nerdy with math here, but a 70% chance to win
- 39:25three games in a row, that's only two point one wins.
- 39:29You're counting tour. I get out of three basically.
- 39:31So percentage wise, I think it's more like 1.
- 39:34I think it's two though. I just I would bet it's Indiana,
- 39:38Ohio State because of the level of team they play.
- 39:40OK, you're only talking about regular season.
- 39:43Regular season regular. Season OK I was like Indiana
- 39:46Ohio State, they're undefeated they're gonna have to they're.
- 39:48Gonna play each other. In a big tension.
- 39:49Maybe that's where it ends up being being one, We'll see.
- 39:52But that's a question I have is we've got four teams left.
- 39:55BYU is a double digit dog this week, so we'll talk about that
- 39:59game here in a minute. But yeah, how many teams end up
- 40:01undefeated? What's your second question?
- 40:04My second question is related to that, but because we have that
- 40:09game this week, Texas Tech BYU is the big 12A1 team bid for the
- 40:14CFBI. Think that that's you and I have
- 40:17both, you know, in the past couple weeks, we're both on the
- 40:20same train of the ACC in the Big 12 being one team bids.
- 40:23But after seeing the College Football Playoff rankings coming
- 40:27up, you know, they have what is it four teams in the top three
- 40:34teams in the top 13 that are Big 12.
- 40:36So you know, they value Utah and what Utah's done seven and two
- 40:40one of the, you know, higher ranked, two lost teams.
- 40:43And then you got BYU and Texas Tech right there, 7 and 8, how
- 40:46they play this week. Like if they if they all kind of
- 40:49hold and those are valuable wins.
- 40:52And let's say, you know, BYU and Texas Tech after this week, they
- 40:56both went out, then I kind of think that they're going to
- 40:59weigh both of them heavily and you're going to see some of this
- 41:03attrition for the other school. You know, the other teams, I
- 41:06think they might end up with a second team.
- 41:08It depends. We'll have to see.
- 41:11We'll have to see as the season goes on.
- 41:13Daniel, my second question is funny with you know, we get
- 41:15playoff ranking, so we got questions about end of the
- 41:16season. Now got to how many 93 teams get
- 41:19in. I think you're going to get at
- 41:21least one. I think it's going to have to
- 41:23come from the SECI. Don't see any more things are
- 41:26right now and I'll see a 93 Big 10, Big 12 or ACC team getting
- 41:30in. Might be none, but you've got a
- 41:32shot at having a 93 Oklahoma, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Texas and
- 41:38Missouri because again, you got to think like that 93 Texas
- 41:42would have a win over Georgia or Texas ain't it your 93 Oklahoma
- 41:48would have a win over Tennessee, obviously, and Texas would have
- 41:50a win over Oklahoma. Tennessee would have, you know,
- 41:53they've already lost three games to the best three teams they've
- 41:54played, so they have to win out. They'd have a win over Vandy.
- 41:57Vanderbilt's best one would probably be Missouri at that
- 42:01point. Yeah.
- 42:02I'm just curious the, you know, how many 93 teams get in?
- 42:06My bet right now is it's one question mark I have.
- 42:13Let's go ahead and hit halftime, Daniel, because I isn't related
- 42:15to what you said. If you're looking on screen now,
- 42:18you've got the XPR. We know the college will playoff
- 42:20rankings kind of doing some comparison here.
- 42:23My, my, my biggest take away is I think the Big 12 is a two big
- 42:25lead. I think.
- 42:27And my prediction though is the Big 12 will get 2 teams in
- 42:30before the ACC does. And I know there's no
- 42:32consistency week to week, but given how low ACC teams are
- 42:36starting, but wins are going to propel those teams up.
- 42:41And we've got Miami at 15. The College Football Playoff
- 42:44hasn't been 18. I think they are out unless they
- 42:48win the ACC, which means they are relying on teams to lose,
- 42:51which again will reinforce that the ACC is the one big lead.
- 42:55If those teams lose enough for Miami to make the ACC
- 42:58championship. At this point, it's for sure A1
- 43:00big, big league. So Indiana, Ohio State, you and
- 43:04I both put Ohio State at one. I honestly thought the committee
- 43:07would put Indiana at one. We have a number one in our XPR
- 43:11right now. They have, I mean, they've got
- 43:13one more data point in Ohio State that'll change.
- 43:15But they've got nine wins. The Ohio State's 8:00, they have
- 43:19a, I don't know, I think a better win.
- 43:22I mean, I mean, Oregon's ranked higher so they, they have a
- 43:23better win on the road. Ohio State's best one is still
- 43:27Texas at home. So I'm surprised it didn't put
- 43:29Indiana. I think Ohio State's the better
- 43:31team. I think resume wise was
- 43:33surprised it wasn't Indiana. Oregon 5 versus 9.
- 43:36We've got him at five playoff committees got him at at 9:00.
- 43:39And then BYU is my other big 1 of I've got him.
- 43:43You know, we've got him at 11, playoff has them at 7.
- 43:46I understand that. I think we're they're more right
- 43:48on that than we are. I think we're going to be more
- 43:50right after this week. They're they're double digit
- 43:52dogs. So again, you got to put the
- 43:54schedule in front of you, but they're still undefeated.
- 43:56So like I think Georgia Tech would have been up here that,
- 43:59you know, 7-8 had they kept winning because it's you got to
- 44:02put the teams in front of you. But with that loss, I think
- 44:04that's why they're down there in the in the low teens.
- 44:08Any big takeaways? Any more takeaways from the the
- 44:10playoff rankings are compared to our XPR?
- 44:13I think just what you're saying about ACC versus Big 12, because
- 44:17I think that's kind of what it's come down to as far as who's
- 44:19going to have additional bids. Highest ranked ACC team is one
- 44:25spot behind the lowest ranked Big 12 team, Utah at 13,
- 44:29Virginia at 14. So that kind of tells you
- 44:33everything you need to know as far as what the perception, the
- 44:36strength and all that kind of stuff is.
- 44:38We'll see as it goes on if that's going to be consistent.
- 44:41Yeah, that's kind of where things stand.
- 44:43All right. That was a fast second quarter
- 44:44and half time. Let's keep rolling third
- 44:46quarter, Daniel had to third quarter team of the week and
- 44:50then three games we're excited to watch.
- 44:52Yeah, so team of the Week for me was Texas.
- 44:55I had several that I could have chose, but I just felt like
- 44:58Texas exorcised some demons playing at home and got they
- 45:03really handled Vanderbilt for the most part.
- 45:06Vanderbilt made a late push to make this 3 point game.
- 45:10We still got the dub as far as our pick goes.
- 45:12That was the only one we got for the week, so we needed it.
- 45:15But the -2 1/2 covered because it was a three-point line or a
- 45:18three-point victory. I just felt like Texas, they
- 45:22were able to get the quarterback on the ground.
- 45:24They played good defensively. Manning looked comfortable for
- 45:28the first time in a while. I felt like you made some big
- 45:31time throws. They started fast.
- 45:34So you just kind of put it all together and it's like, OK,
- 45:37Texas, this is a good win. And I think that maybe this is
- 45:41what, you know, the kind of consistency you're going to see
- 45:45as they March towards the end of of the season.
- 45:49And maybe this is kind of the start of where, you know, they,
- 45:52they had all these high expectations and they've kind of
- 45:54been declining for a while. And maybe they're going to start
- 45:56the climb back to, to national relevance.
- 46:00And I think that started this week.
- 46:01So Texas, my team of the week, three games I'm watching, I've
- 46:05got 2 that are on Friday night. I believe they're both on Friday
- 46:09night. No, no, no, no.
- 46:12Just kidding. And one's Friday night and then
- 46:14one's big noon kickoff. Sorry about that.
- 46:16I was looking at another Big 10 game this Friday night, also on
- 46:19Fox. But Tulane and Memphis, OK, this
- 46:23one has lost some shine. It may have even been a game
- 46:27that we were going to pick on our games of the week if if
- 46:31Tulane had just won last week. But they lost and they lost kind
- 46:34of in blowout fashion. So that kind of all but
- 46:38eliminates them from the, you know, Football Playoff.
- 46:42I noticed that no teams that were group of six were ranked in
- 46:46the initial College Football Playoff rankings.
- 46:47So something to keep in mind. But Memphis kind of looks like
- 46:52the odds on favorite. So they play at home against
- 46:55Tulane. That's a big game.
- 46:57You also have those rumors swirling for John Sumrall at
- 47:00Tulane and you probably get some Ryan Silverfield as well from
- 47:04Memphis as far as this time of year, these coaching
- 47:07opportunities. So that's one game.
- 47:09Indiana, Penn State, Penn State is now the punching bag for
- 47:12everybody. If they were to sneak up and
- 47:14beat A-Team like Indiana, that would be insane and kind of
- 47:16shake everything up. But 15 1/2 point line there for
- 47:18Indiana at home against Penn State, Kurt Signetti, you know,
- 47:22kind of imposed his will on them.
- 47:24And then I've got Mississippi State and Georgia on this list
- 47:26and Mississippi State at home at noon, at 11:00 AM local time.
- 47:31You know, Mississippi State has really given difficult games to
- 47:34a lot of teams and especially at home.
- 47:36And then they got their first SEC win last week.
- 47:38So I put both of those together and George is kind of walking
- 47:41into this when they're an 8 1/2 point favorite.
- 47:43But, you know, you kind of look at, you know, Georgia team
- 47:47that's kind of played close with a lot of schools.
- 47:49This is a tough, you know, come down off the big win against
- 47:53their rival this week against Florida, next week they're
- 47:56playing or this week they're playing Mississippi State.
- 47:59So something to keep in mind there.
- 48:01So those are my three games I'm watching that we're not picking.
- 48:04Yeah, that's good. I like the George Mississippi
- 48:07State one. I think that's an interesting
- 48:08match up for Georgia. I think they're going to be able
- 48:12to throw a little bit against Georgia.
- 48:14Excited for that one, especially Daniel.
- 48:16I've got 1U match for the week. Despite the all blue it was the
- 48:21cocktail party. Looked really good on TVI loved
- 48:26that game. Always ends at night so you get
- 48:27some like sunlight on the uniforms and some stadium
- 48:30lights. Looked good in both.
- 48:32Great uniform matchup as always in that rivalry.
- 48:35This week we've got some bangers.
- 48:37Like a couple weeks. Feel like I've been a little bit
- 48:39on the weaker side. We've got some bangers this
- 48:42week. 1 Clemson versus Florida State, Florida State can wear
- 48:45garnet or gold pants won't matter.
- 48:47Elite uniform match up against Clemson as long as they're not
- 48:50wearing the all orange. I don't know if they're going to
- 48:52wear orange britches this year because I mean, what is there
- 48:55left to play for really? But it might be a a weird game
- 48:59and I don't know who's going to watch, but will be a great
- 49:02uniform matchup. Definitely lost some luster of
- 49:05what that could have been a couple months ago to Daniel.
- 49:08You know, I'm going to say that one to North Carolina and
- 49:10Stanford got that Carolina blue, probably my favorite color.
- 49:16It's that Stanford Cardinal red again, blue versus red.
- 49:20One of my favorite matchups. That will be very good.
- 49:24Daniel, one of my favorite. I need to go through and find
- 49:27out what's my favorite uniform matchup in the sport.
- 49:30I think this one would be top five.
- 49:32It's Alabama and LSU. They wear the same uniforms
- 49:36every time they play because LSU wears a white at home, looks
- 49:40good in whichever stadium, does not matter.
- 49:43Love the Alabama and LSU and you know, historically they've
- 49:46played this game at night. It will be at night this time.
- 49:48This is one of the best uniforms in the matchups in the sport.
- 49:52Very much looking forward to watching that game for the
- 49:55football, but also it's just going to look really good on TV
- 49:58and in Persia. That's a helmet game, Daniel.
- 50:00It's just it doesn't get much better than that uniform
- 50:03matchup. And isn't it crazy that one's
- 50:04one of the ones that's going away from every year because of
- 50:08the new SEC schedule? It's like it doesn't feel right.
- 50:11So this will be the last one, or I mean last one in sequence.
- 50:15It'll miss it next year and then it'll come back the year after
- 50:17that. But.
- 50:18It is crazy. I, I was looking, you know, a
- 50:20few years ago, we did the what we thought would be the
- 50:24permanent rivals or whatever. And I think I told you like the,
- 50:27the teams Alabama has played the most Auburn, obviously, but then
- 50:31it was like Mississippi State and Ole Miss, they've played
- 50:34more than LSU. But obviously the last two
- 50:36decades, that's one of the premier matchups in the sport.
- 50:39I'm surprised because it's done such a good TV numbers.
- 50:42I thought ABC would have more of a, more of an influence on the
- 50:46schedule then then they, or maybe not they did, but I'm
- 50:51surprised the SEC prioritized balance over like premier
- 50:57matchups. I'm just cuz I don't think money
- 50:59is, you know, money's kind of controlling the sport right now.
- 51:01I'm just surprised that ABC was not like, hey, we're paying you
- 51:05$300 million or whatever, We're getting Bama, LSU.
- 51:08That's just that's how I thought they'd handle.
- 51:10That yeah, yeah. Yeah, it does.
- 51:11It does stick. We're not getting it.
- 51:13Yeah, beautiful uniforms. Those are my 3, Daniel.
- 51:18Fourth quarter. Look, we're struggling, all
- 51:21right. I'm at 41% against the spread.
- 51:22This is by far the worst season I've ever had since we started
- 51:24doing the podcast. I might start a fade What I
- 51:28think principle this week. So because it's not bad, I
- 51:32picked opposite. I'd be almost 60% and get the
- 51:35spread, which would be unbelievable.
- 51:37Yeah. So you're at 43% and get the
- 51:40spread. I'm at 41.
- 51:41You're one game ahead of me there.
- 51:43Let's start Texas Tech. We went one in three last week.
- 51:46We've picked the same what, 2 weeks in a row?
- 51:48We've picked the same games. We've gone one in seven, so I
- 51:52might just change the pick depending on what you pick.
- 51:55Daniel, Texas Tech BYU, Texas Tech A10 point favorite against
- 52:00the undefeated Cougars. BYU off a by Texas Tech playing
- 52:04six games in a row. Vegas still hanging A10 here you
- 52:08got in Lubbock. Texas Tech's the better team.
- 52:10I I think they're going to come out and win this game.
- 52:12I am famously ABYU denier. Why change?
- 52:16So they've burned me a couple times, but at the same time,
- 52:20Texas Tech is just, I think they're too good.
- 52:22This is at home. This is actually taking the ABC
- 52:26slot on, you know, taking it from the SEC at noon.
- 52:30So I, I love that. I think that this is I mean,
- 52:33this is the Big 12 championship preview right here.
- 52:36You know, this this could be in a few weeks what the rematch may
- 52:39be. So give me Texas Tech lay the
- 52:42points. It's 10 points.
- 52:44I think they're going to win this by two touchdowns.
- 52:46Plus, I mean, it may be a a bigger game than that.
- 52:49So I just think you start looking at some of the the
- 52:51details here, that the talent profile, all of that stuff.
- 52:55BYU definitely benefited from an easier schedule so far.
- 52:59And there this is where it ends. So give me Texas Tech, lay the
- 53:02points. Let's keep it easy.
- 53:05Yeah, good. Raiders.
- 53:06Red Raiders. I put BYU on fraud watch, fraud
- 53:11alert. They come out and beat Utah.
- 53:14They're awful by Texas Tech playing six games in a row.
- 53:18I'm not backing down. I'm not scared.
- 53:20Fraud watch. Fraud alert.
- 53:22BYU. Vegas knows.
- 53:25Vegas knows. That's why they're laying at 10.
- 53:28It's been up at 10 1/2, back down to 10.
- 53:31Texas Tech wins and covers this game.
- 53:33I don't know if BYU can score enough to keep it within 10.
- 53:35That's my concern here. Texas Tech most explosive plays
- 53:40in the country. They're also the top rushing
- 53:42defense on a per play basis in total yards per game in the
- 53:46country. They're also 7th in yards per a
- 53:48temple out in their past defense.
- 53:50That's the most elite unit on the field.
- 53:52I don't know if BYU can score enough to keep it close.
- 53:55Laid the 10 points. I think this is like a 34 to 20
- 53:58Texas Tech win. Think they win by a couple
- 54:01scores. Daniel lay the points.
- 54:02All the vibes are right to Last time college game day was at
- 54:05Texas Tech was do you know? Was it for 2011 or whenever that
- 54:10was 20? No, it's 2008.
- 54:12Who? 2008 Two. 1000, they played
- 54:15against Texas. Colt McCoy and Michael Crabtree
- 54:18catch on the sideline. So Van Harrell.
- 54:21Yeah, OK. That's.
- 54:21Right. Yep, nailed it.
- 54:25Give it. We we book at the Red Raiders.
- 54:27Hopefully we've got some difference the rest of the way.
- 54:30All right. Missouri, Missouri and Texas
- 54:33A&M. Missouri at home, Texas A&M,
- 54:37undefeated. Missouri's on a backup
- 54:39quarterback. Texas A&M goes on the road.
- 54:43You know, they got an easier draw in the SEC.
- 54:45They're laying seven. Who do you have in Columbia?
- 54:48Both of these teams off a bye week, I believe so coming off of
- 54:51last week and you know, Texas saying with a huge win at Death
- 54:55Valley has their bye week. Mizzou with the loss, Mizzou had
- 54:59some tough outcomes and then having to go to a freshman
- 55:03quarterback in the fashion that they did is just always tough.
- 55:07I will say, I do think that they're extremely talented at
- 55:10quarterback still. I think Matthews Dollars is
- 55:13going to be a big time player in the SEC for years to come,
- 55:16whether that's here or at Florida when he follows Eli
- 55:18drink wits over there. But all that he said, I think
- 55:21he's going to play well in this game.
- 55:23It's not going to matter though, because Texas A&M's defense is
- 55:26going to be too good and their offense, I think, you know, my
- 55:30mindset has had to catch up to Texas A&M is an explosive
- 55:34offense that can beat you in the air on the ground.
- 55:38I think they're going to mix both in.
- 55:40I don't think that this is a runaway and hide game, like a
- 55:43big blow out in the first half, but I think that they are
- 55:45probably ahead by 7 or 10 at halftime.
- 55:51You know, maybe the last drive of the first half gets them to
- 55:5510 points. Like they kick a field goal,
- 55:57they go in like 2414 that half and then they come out in the
- 56:01second-half and I think that they extend their lead.
- 56:04I think this is going to be like a a 17 to 20 point victory for
- 56:08Texas A&M. So still a big win, but it's
- 56:10more over the course of the game.
- 56:12They're just going to be too much for Missouri.
- 56:15So yeah, give me, give me the Aggies, lay the points.
- 56:17Taking the Tigers, all right, So we're we're going to have some
- 56:20difference here. I like Josh Pate's principle
- 56:23because I've seen it more often of bet on a backup quarterback
- 56:27and a lot of money goes, oh, backup quarterback.
- 56:30So, you know, take the other team, lay the points.
- 56:33I'm betting on a backup quarterback here that sometimes
- 56:36the team as a whole plays better because they know they've got
- 56:38they've got to all put in more effort because they've got their
- 56:41backup quarterback. We talked about Texas A&M's
- 56:43relatively easy schedule, but they've got one of the best ones
- 56:46in the country at Notre Dame. I think they've looked like even
- 56:49eye test wise, they've looked like the best team in the SECI.
- 56:53Don't think Missouri can score enough to win this game, but I
- 56:56think they can play keep away, run the ball a lot and keep it
- 57:00close. Missouri is 87th in sack
- 57:03percentage in Texas A&M. Can rush the pastor.
- 57:05I don't think that's a good match up, but Missouri can rush
- 57:08the pastor too. And I want to see what Texas
- 57:10A&M's offensive line looks like when they've got an elite pass
- 57:13rush coming at them that Missouri has.
- 57:15Daniel, I think it's going to be a one score SEC game.
- 57:18I said beginning of the year. I don't think anybody's getting
- 57:20out of the SEC unscathed. I think this is a game they
- 57:23could lose. I don't think they're going to
- 57:25I'm I'm taking Texas AM to win, but I'm going to middle it.
- 57:27Gimme Missouri plus the seven. I liked it at 7, which it was 7
- 57:321/2. But I think they can play keep
- 57:34away in this game, limit possessions.
- 57:36This seems like a 27 to 21 Texas A&M win.
- 57:41And you know what? You take that and you move on
- 57:44and you and you you're one step closer to Atlanta.
- 57:46You take a win in any shape or form and wins a win and you move
- 57:50on. Good teams win in November.
- 57:52I think Texas AM is a good team. I think they're going to win the
- 57:54game. I think sevens just like I got
- 57:57point too much. So give me the Tigers to cover
- 57:59here. I think they can keep it close
- 58:02with Texas A&M. We go to the Big 10 A-Team we've
- 58:07had in the XPR, not ranked in the AP.
- 58:09They are ranked in the first College Football Playoff
- 58:11rankings. Iowa quietly only has two
- 58:14losses. They played in Indiana closer
- 58:17than any other team has this year.
- 58:19As A1 score game, Oregon comes into town.
- 58:22The Ducks land 6 1/2. Who do you like in this game in
- 58:26Iowa City? Yeah, I think that this one,
- 58:29this one's huge because Iowa, like you just said, they were,
- 58:33they're probably the best opponent for Indiana so far as
- 58:37far as keeping them close and making them kind of look human.
- 58:40And they had to make plays at the end of the game to really
- 58:43take that one, make that one a big time win.
- 58:46This one in Iowa, Oregon's coming in.
- 58:50They're the they're the serious contender here.
- 58:52Of course, Iowa is trying to play spoiler.
- 58:55I like Oregon to come in here and try to make a statement.
- 58:58I think that they were embarrassed by the Indiana loss.
- 59:02And I think that over the course of the year, they don't have
- 59:06enough teams on their schedule to be impressive wins.
- 59:09This is as close as they're going to get on the road to
- 59:11Iowa. I think that they're going to
- 59:14come in them against the world they feel disrespected, their
- 59:18College Football Playoff position, and they're gonna have
- 59:21to win this. You know the old phrase of style
- 59:24points. They're gonna have to do that
- 59:25here. So I like them to come in like
- 59:28Dante Moore thinks gonna have a big day on the road.
- 59:30Yeah, give me the give me the Ducks.
- 59:32I think that they win by, I think at least two touchdowns in
- 59:35this game. So 6 1/2 points, I'll take it.
- 59:38I'll lay that easy. Give me the Ducks.
- 59:40I'm with you man. I think 1 glaring mismatch in
- 59:42this game is the Iowa offense against the Oregon defense.
- 59:46Surprise, the Iowa offense has been better, but this is still a
- 59:50glaring mismatch. Look, Oregon offense best EPA
- 59:53per rush team in the country or Iowa defense top 15 in that
- 59:56category. They've been top 7 and EPA per
- 59:59drop back. It's it's a good Iowa defense
- 1:00:01surprise that you know, that is normal.
- 1:00:04The mismatch is on the other side.
- 1:00:05I Iowa's offensive and better, but they're still think of
- 1:00:09they're 100 teeth in success rate when they're passing the
- 1:00:11ball. They are 76th and EPA drop back.
- 1:00:15Just not a great passing offense and you're going up against the
- 1:00:18team. Daniel, this is the number four
- 1:00:20team in the country. In EPA, per drop back allowed,
- 1:00:25this is a very good pass defense on a per play basis.
- 1:00:29They don't let you know. They force more field goals and
- 1:00:32touchdowns. I think that's the mismatch in
- 1:00:34this game. I think it's lower scoring.
- 1:00:35Give me Oregon 24, Iowa 13. I think Oregon wins and covers.
- 1:00:40Yeah, 6 1/2. Almost like a sucker because it
- 1:00:42seems like easy money. Nothing's ever easy money, but I
- 1:00:45feel pretty confident about the Ducks laying the points in this
- 1:00:48one. Daniel we end with what should
- 1:00:51have been a premier match up in the SEC, Alabama and LSULSU.
- 1:00:55Daniel you would think they're two and seven with the way, you
- 1:00:59know, with what the program did with firing people and drama and
- 1:01:03all the stuff coming out. They're only five and three men.
- 1:01:06They're they're yeah, they're going on the road to Alabama.
- 1:01:10Alabama. It's a 10 point favorite.
- 1:01:11Both teams off of a by. Who do you like in Tuscaloosa?
- 1:01:15Yeah, this one there. I mean, the expectations just
- 1:01:20became too much and you go from terrible culture, terrible just
- 1:01:25vibes with Brad Kelly and blaming everybody, to Frank
- 1:01:30Wilson, who I think is just LSU guy.
- 1:01:33He's got deep ties, the state of Louisiana.
- 1:01:35He's obviously been at LSU multiple times, 30 years as a
- 1:01:38coach. He's their recruiting
- 1:01:39coordinator. So it's like you don't make a
- 1:01:41guy like that if he doesn't have great relationships.
- 1:01:43You know, you think about guys that are directors of player
- 1:01:46development, all that kind of stuff.
- 1:01:47So I think you're going to have a team in LSU that is going to
- 1:01:52be fighting and scratching and clawing, giving everything
- 1:01:55they've got. They've had two weeks to
- 1:01:56prepare. Obviously both of them did, but
- 1:01:58I'm just saying that's why the the firing was, you know, during
- 1:02:03the bye week. That's just something where they
- 1:02:05can kind of get their staff in order to get everything kind of
- 1:02:08going in the right direction. I think they're able to also get
- 1:02:10healthy. LSU still a good a collection of
- 1:02:15players are I stopped short of calling them a good team, but
- 1:02:19they are a good collection of players.
- 1:02:21They have the ability to become a good team.
- 1:02:24They can still, you know, I mean, I want to say they can
- 1:02:28make the playoff. They could go 9 and 3.
- 1:02:30They'd have to win the rest of their games.
- 1:02:31It's not likely with an interim coach.
- 1:02:34But Nosmeyer's a good a good quarterback.
- 1:02:36He's not elite. I think that's what's been kind
- 1:02:38of evidence so far this year. The team hasn't been able to get
- 1:02:42out of their own way. I'm talking a lot about LSU.
- 1:02:45I'm not talking about Alabama for a reason.
- 1:02:47Alabama is the standard in this game.
- 1:02:50This isn't Bryant Denny Stadium. They're the better team.
- 1:02:54They have played with their food a lot this year.
- 1:02:58They've had several games. Obviously the first game they
- 1:03:01got burned against Floor State where they just did not do what
- 1:03:04they need to do. But even after the win versus
- 1:03:07George, which kind of galvanized them and they they've had some
- 1:03:10games where they have let the other team stay in it.
- 1:03:13For that reason, I think 10 points is too much.
- 1:03:15I think LSU is going to come in and be very inspired in this
- 1:03:19game. And this is kind of the last of
- 1:03:21its kind, you know, cuz this next year, the SEC schedule
- 1:03:25changes. I think a lot of that factors
- 1:03:27in. And I think LSU is too good of a
- 1:03:29team to be a 10 point underdog. I'm probably going to be eating
- 1:03:32my words on Monday whenever we talk about whenever we look at
- 1:03:35this. But yeah, give me LSU and the 10
- 1:03:38points. I think that Alabama is going to
- 1:03:41be happy to get out with a win. And yeah, I'll, I'll just leave
- 1:03:45it there. LSU plus 10.
- 1:03:47Bama still probably wins, but too close for this. 10 points.
- 1:03:51Yes, want to believe again, man? All right, me too.
- 1:03:54Alabama. I'll say this, I don't think
- 1:03:56Alabama's play with their food. I think Alabama, the gap's just
- 1:03:58not as big in the SEC this year. I just don't think there is a
- 1:04:01right now, I don't think there is an Ohio State level team in
- 1:04:04the SEC in the middle of the SEC.
- 1:04:07Look, call it bias, call it what you want.
- 1:04:09The middle of the SEC is better they in the middle of these
- 1:04:12other conferences and they the collection of talent is better
- 1:04:15than these other conferences. So I think LSU, I think you're
- 1:04:17going to see the best effort they've given this season.
- 1:04:20I have read that there is even some players you don't like
- 1:04:22Brian Kelly, who love Frank Wilson.
- 1:04:25There's a reason you fire before the bye week.
- 1:04:27You either let them take this loss and fire him or you fire
- 1:04:30before the bye week to get, you know, to have two weeks to get
- 1:04:32ready. You saw this from Florida last
- 1:04:35week. You saw an inspired effort.
- 1:04:37You saw one of their best efforts of the season.
- 1:04:39They by no means had given it up on the season.
- 1:04:42That was their best effort. They wanted to go out and be
- 1:04:44Georgia. I think you see that from LSU
- 1:04:45this week. This will be the best defense
- 1:04:48Alabama has faced. This is still a top 10 defense
- 1:04:51in the country in LSU. The offense has just been
- 1:04:54abysmal, which is why Brian Kelly got fired.
- 1:04:56He never put together a good offense with a good defense at
- 1:04:59LSU. The defense is very good.
- 1:05:01This very good at LSU. So I think you get an inspired
- 1:05:05effort with two weeks to prepare.
- 1:05:06Alabama 28, LSU 20. I think it's within, you know,
- 1:05:10and maybe it's even LSU scores late, right?
- 1:05:13Maybe it's, you know, we have a chance still and they score 3
- 1:05:16minutes left and they try an on sidekick and well, it's kind of
- 1:05:19A2 score game the whole time. Maybe it's like that.
- 1:05:20But I do think 10 points is a lot for a defense that's this
- 1:05:24good and a team that I don't think will have quit for this
- 1:05:28game. So I can be LSU plus 10.
- 1:05:30Alabama could absolutely just smoke them like Texas A&M did at
- 1:05:34home. But give me one more week to
- 1:05:37believe in LSU. All right, give me one more week
- 1:05:40and we'll go from there. Daniel long episode.
- 1:05:43We had a lot to talk about. Let's let's go for no this week.
