- 0:00welcome back to fostering faith and we have made
- 0:03it guys we have made it into the middle of December
- 0:06and we have made it through the fruits of the
- 0:09spirit and next week is Christmas can you believe
- 0:13that this year has just flown by and so as we
- 0:16go into the middle of the holiday season hopefully
- 0:20you are doing well and this is gonna be our last
- 0:23episode of the Holy Spirit fruits and so I think
- 0:27this is a great one I think for lot of different
- 0:31reasons and so it does like health and wealth
- 0:33and Just recovery and I think that this is a
- 0:37really hard fruit that people don't realize that
- 0:41they have inside of them. And so this is self
- 0:44-control. When the Holy Spirit studies you, whenever
- 0:47you cannot. And so welcome back to Fostering
- 0:49Faith. If you are a return listener, if you are
- 0:52new to Fostering Faith, welcome and we're so
- 0:54happy that you tuned in. We are here at Fostering
- 0:56Faith. Don't have it all figured out, but we
- 0:58are walking through this journey of faith together
- 1:01as a community. And so... We hope that this message
- 1:04inspires you, blesses you, and just gives you
- 1:06a little bit of inspiration to get through your
- 1:08day. And so today we're going to arrive at the
- 1:10final characteristic of the fruit of the spirit
- 1:12and one that many believers dread talking about,
- 1:15the one that we feel the most failure in, the
- 1:18one that feels the hardest, the slowest to grow,
- 1:22the most humbling, and the most exposing. But
- 1:25in the same way it is this one that brings most
- 1:28freedom once we understand it through scripture
- 1:30and not through shame. And today we're going
- 1:33to be talking about self -control. Not the wordly,
- 1:37not white -knuckled, not grit -your -teeth, try
- 1:39-harder self -control, but the Spirit -born,
- 1:42Christ -shaped, Holy Spirit -powered self -control
- 1:45scripture that calls us into it. And so self
- 1:50-control is not legalism. It is not behavior
- 1:52modification. It is not perfection. It is not
- 1:56rule -keeping. It is not suppressing your emotions.
- 1:59It is not living in fear or messing up. True
- 2:01self -control, the kind that the Bible speaks
- 2:04about, is inner strength produced by the Holy
- 2:06Spirit that allows you to rule your desires instead
- 2:10of being ruled by them. It is transformed. It's
- 2:15transformation of your desires. not the imprisonment
- 2:18of them. It is the ability to choose what's holy
- 2:21over what's easy. It is the capacity to honor
- 2:25God, even when our flesh screams for comfort,
- 2:29escape, or indulgence. And let me say this clearly.
- 2:33You cannot produce a self -biblical self -control
- 2:36by willpower. Willpower will run out. Willpower
- 2:40breaks under pressure. Willpower collapses when
- 2:43temptation is stronger than your energy. And
- 2:45that's why self -control is not a fruit of you.
- 2:48It is the fruit of the spirit. And our Galatians
- 2:525, 22 through 23, the end of this, the fruit
- 2:56of the spirit is love, joy, peace, all the way
- 3:00to gentleness and self -control. Self -control
- 3:03is not a personality strength. It is a Holy Spirit
- 3:07miracle. And maybe you're right now, as you hear
- 3:10the word self -control, it hits shame. You think
- 3:15about the moments whenever you reacted instead
- 3:17of responding. When you ate out of emotion instead
- 3:20of hunger. Where you spent out of impulse instead
- 3:23of wisdom. Where you spoke out of anger instead
- 3:26of patience. Where you chose to escape instead
- 3:30of endurance. When you made a promise that you
- 3:33didn't keep. When you feel the sting of regret.
- 3:36But hear this in love. Your failure is not final.
- 3:41Your weakness is not your identity. Your lack
- 3:44of control in the past is not a prophecy about
- 3:48your future. The Holy Spirit specializes in forming
- 3:52self -control where it gets used in chaos. And
- 3:57so let's begin where scripture begins with the
- 3:59heart. And so Proverbs 4 .23 says, Watch over
- 4:02your heart with all diligence for it flows with
- 4:06springs of life. Self -control isn't about managing
- 4:09symptoms. It's about guarding the source. What
- 4:13you allow to sit in your heart will eventually
- 4:15come out in your choices when the Holy Spirit
- 4:18shapes your heart He shapes your desires your
- 4:21motivations your appetites your reactions He
- 4:24does not change your behavior. He changes your
- 4:27inner world until the outer world starts to reflect
- 4:30him and Let's look at Paul in first Corinthians
- 4:34927. It says he says I discipline my body and
- 4:39make it my slave notice He does not say he punishes
- 4:45himself or he beats himself up He says he brings
- 4:48his body into alignment with the spirit. He rules
- 4:52his impulses instead of being ruled by them That
- 4:55is biblical self -control not punishment alignment
- 5:00not self -hatred but self -governance not shame
- 5:05but stewardship Self -control is how you Stewart
- 5:08your body the mind and emotions God has entrusted
- 5:12you with. And you need to know this. Self -control
- 5:17is evidence of freedom and not bondage. The world
- 5:21teaches that freedom is doing whatever we want
- 5:23whenever we want it. But scripture teaches us
- 5:26that freedom is being liberated from whatever
- 5:28once controlled you. Self -control is not chains.
- 5:34Sin is. Self -control is choosing God. Sin is
- 5:39choosing slavery. Romans 6 14 says sin shall
- 5:43not be a master over you the Holy Spirit gives
- 5:46you self -control So nothing else can master
- 5:49you So let's look at Jesus. Jesus is the embodiment
- 5:53of perfection of self -control in the wilderness
- 5:57Matthew 4 after 40 days with no food Who is gonna
- 6:02come in and say? Give me some bread Satan tempts
- 6:06him If there was ever a moment where his flesh
- 6:10had a reason to break, it was then. But Jesus
- 6:14responded with scripture because we know who
- 6:17knows scripture better than us, Satan. And we
- 6:20know that we have to know scripture in order
- 6:24to fight him because he will twist that truth.
- 6:27And then if we don't know scripture, we don't
- 6:28know what it says. We get it taken out of context
- 6:30and he's going to tell you something and you're
- 6:33like, oh yeah, that's right. That's right. No,
- 6:36no. We got to know scripture because he knows
- 6:38it better. And so Jesus responses with scripture,
- 6:41self -control anchored in truth. On the cross,
- 6:44Jesus retains his power, restrains his power.
- 6:49He could have called legions of angels. He could
- 6:52have stopped the suffering, but for love's sake,
- 6:56he didn't. And that's divine self -control. Self
- 6:59-control is not weakness. It is choosing the
- 7:01will of God over the will of the flesh. Now let's
- 7:05get personal. Most people struggle with self
- 7:07-control in secret places, in their mind, in
- 7:11their cravings, in late -night moments, in impulsive
- 7:15decisions, in emotional reactions. But the Holy
- 7:19Spirit is not intimidated by our impulses. He
- 7:22is not shocked by your struggles. He doesn't,
- 7:26He does not condone, condemn you. He comes to
- 7:30you steady. 2nd Timothy 1 says, for God is not
- 7:34given us a spirit of timidly, but of power and
- 7:36love and of sound mind. Sound mind in the Greek
- 7:40means self -discipline, self -controlled, self
- 7:44-governed. The Holy Spirit gives that to you,
- 7:47not shame, not fear, not panic, and not chaos.
- 7:52Self -control is really spirit control. And let's
- 7:58talk about the war on the inside. Romans 7 describes
- 8:03it, the battle between you, what you want to
- 8:06do in your spirit, and what you want to do in
- 8:08your flesh instead. Paul describes it honestly.
- 8:11The very thing that I hate to do, but in the
- 8:14end of Romans 8 .1, with hope, there is now no
- 8:19condemnation for those who are in Christ's self
- 8:22-Jesus. Self -control isn't about living without
- 8:25struggle. It's about living with Without condemnation
- 8:29the Holy Spirit empowers you to win battles you
- 8:32used to lose Now I want to move into where you
- 8:39are right now, maybe there's areas where you
- 8:41feel out of control you're eating your emotions
- 8:45your reactions Your thought patterns your temptations
- 8:49your spending your habits your scrolling your
- 8:53relationships But hear me nothing in you is too
- 8:58strong for the Holy Spirit to transform. Nothing
- 9:01you struggle with is beyond his reach. He forms
- 9:05self -control slowly, deeply, progressively,
- 9:10like a root under the soil. And how are we going
- 9:16to move this into some action? So let's take
- 9:18some action. And so because self -control grows
- 9:23where your practice is surrendered, not where
- 9:27you push harder. These next few steps are not
- 9:31to pressure, but they're about partnership with
- 9:34the Holy Spirit. Self -control starts with choosing
- 9:37one place where you ask the Holy Spirit to set
- 9:40a you. Not 10 different areas. Don't go run a
- 9:43marathon before you take a step. Just not your
- 9:46entire life at once. Just one space. Maybe it's
- 9:50your reactions. Maybe it's your phone. Maybe
- 9:53it's your food. Maybe it's your spending. Maybe
- 9:57it's your tone Don't overwhelm yourself. Just
- 10:00ask the Holy Spirit Rule this one place for me
- 10:04today One place is enough for the spirit to work
- 10:09Self -control grows whenever you slow down long
- 10:12enough to interpret the impulses Before you react
- 10:15before you eat out of emotion before you send
- 10:18the next text before you say that word Before
- 10:21you make that decision take one breath and whisper
- 10:24Holy Spirit Hold me right here. This one interpretation
- 10:31creates a timeline of change. Self -control flourishes
- 10:35when you choose not to escape but to endure.
- 10:38Whenever you feel, whenever you face a feeling
- 10:41or urge, a craving, a fear, a temptation, instead
- 10:44of running, sit with it and say, Holy Spirit,
- 10:49strengthen me. Feelings pass. Temptations weaken.
- 10:56The spirit strengthens. Every time that you do
- 10:58this, you build holy endurance. And I want you
- 11:02to say this out loud today. A declaration that
- 11:04shifts your identity. Holy Spirit, you steady
- 11:09me. You strengthen me. You rule me. I am not
- 11:14controlled by my impulses. I am controlled by
- 11:17you. And when you say that, heaven hears that
- 11:22your heart hears that darkness hears that and
- 11:27it the shift begins and so we hope that this
- 11:31message was short was encouraging and There is
- 11:37so much that the Holy Spirit can do if you just
- 11:41Surrender and so I'm proud of you for listening
- 11:44and staying through this whole topic series Next
- 11:48week is Christmas and so we will do a special
- 11:52topic on Christmas and God is not asking you
- 11:54to be stronger He is asking you to stay surrendered
- 11:57because the spirit will produce in you self -control
- 12:00That you never thought you could have And so
- 12:03we would love to pray for you. Dear Heavenly
- 12:05Father, thank you for these listeners. Thank
- 12:07you for their ability to just fully surrender
- 12:09their life. Thank you that you were changing

- 12:18the Holy Spirit to strengthen us where we are
- 12:20weak. Thank you for clarity. That is from from
- 12:23confusion. Thank you for the restraint and from
- 12:25a temptation. Thank you for the peace that our
- 12:27emotions are overwhelming Thank you that we produce
- 12:30self -control that we do not produce self -control
- 12:33But you are that because we are rooted in your
- 12:35willpower and not our own Thank you for all that
- 12:38you do in Jesus name. I pray Amen Thank you so
