- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. Great to have your company on
- 0:15this Tuesday the 3rd of March. Here we are the third of the 3rd
- 0:212026. How brilliant.
- 0:24Time keeps on moving forward. And as time moves forward, boy,
- 0:29some things just get scarier and scarier as we read these sorts
- 0:34of poetic stanzas of God's judgement against His people.
- 0:39And they are terrifying to read. If you're anything like me, you
- 0:41think, my goodness, how do we reconcile this brutality with
- 0:47everything we know to be true about God in Jesus?
- 0:51It just seems incongruous. And so Ioffer you 3 things to
- 0:55consider as we read this poetry of judgement.
- 0:59The first thing is that back then the world was a very brutal
- 1:03place and that kingdoms would rise and fall and with them,
- 1:08unfortunately, people died. And so this is a much more
- 1:12brutal time where death was much more part of life than it is
- 1:16today. So when we hear about this
- 1:18death, it's shocking. But back then death was just
- 1:21much more a part of life than it is now.
- 1:24We tend to hide it away in nursing homes and hospitals.
- 1:27That's my least most important point.
- 1:29My second most important point is that all of what we're
- 1:33reading now is, like I said yesterday, poetry.
- 1:36So often in poetry and, and in this ancient style of writing,
- 1:41the authors use these grand statements, these sweeping
- 1:45statements that are not necessarily factually true in
- 1:48the details, like every man, woman and child was slaughtered.
- 1:52That's often a literary or poetic device to say it was a
- 1:56comprehensive victory. So when we hear these terrible
- 1:59statements of death and destruction of innocence, that
- 2:03is often a poetic device, not necessarily a historical
- 2:08description of what happened. And thirdly, my friends, as we
- 2:13hear these terrible judgements that God has for his people,
- 2:18this is just proof of how much we need Jesus.
- 2:22And the beauty of knowing that our God is not a God who sits in
- 2:27judgement, but a God who sends us help and rescues us so that
- 2:31that judgement is dealt with in the person, the death and
- 2:34resurrection of Jesus. How good is that?
- 2:38So that is just a little bit of a lens through which we can see
- 2:42this poetry of judgement and destruction.
- 2:46So having said all that, let's dive in and read this final
- 2:49chapter of judgement against God's people in Hosea chapter
- 2:5310. How prosperous Israel is a
- 3:07luxuriant vine loaded with fruit.
- 3:10But the richer the people get, the more Pagan altars they
- 3:14build, the more bountiful their harvests, the more beautiful
- 3:18their sacred pillars. The hearts of the people are
- 3:21fickle. They are guilty and must be
- 3:24punished. The Lord will break down their
- 3:27altars and smash their sacred pillars.
- 3:30Then they will say, we have no king because we didn't fear the
- 3:34Lord. But even if we had a king, what
- 3:38could he do for us anyway? They spout empty words and make
- 3:42covenants they don't intend to keep, so injustice springs up
- 3:46among them like poisonous weeds in a farmers field.
- 3:51The people of Samaria tremble in fear for their calf idol at Beth
- 3:56Arvan, and they mourn for it. Though it's priests rejoice over
- 4:00it, It's glory will be stripped away.
- 4:03This idol will be carted away to Assyria, a gift to the great
- 4:07king there. Ephraim will be ridiculed and
- 4:10Israel will be shamed because its people have trusted in this
- 4:14idol. Samaria and its king will be cut
- 4:17off. They will float away like
- 4:19driftwood on an ocean wave, and the Pagan shrines of Avon, the
- 4:25place of Israel's sin, will crumble.
- 4:28Thorns and thistles will grow up around their altars.
- 4:31They will beg the mountains, bury us, and plead with the
- 4:35hills fall on us. The Lord says, O Israel, ever
- 4:41since Gibeah there has been only sin and more sin.
- 4:45You have made no progress whatsoever.
- 4:48Was it not right that the wicked men of Gibeah were attacked?
- 4:52Now whenever it fits my plan, I will attack too.
- 4:57I will call out the armies of the nations to punish you for
- 5:00your multiplied sins. Israel is like a trained heifer
- 5:05treading out the grain, An easy job she loves, but I will put a
- 5:10heavy yolk on her tender neck. I will force Judah to pull the
- 5:14plough and Israel to break up the hard ground.
- 5:18I said, plant the good seeds of righteousness and you will
- 5:22harvest a crop of love. Plough up the hard ground of
- 5:26your hearts, for now is the time to seek the Lord, that He may
- 5:29come to shower righteousness upon you.
- 5:33But you have cultivated wickedness and harvested A
- 5:36thriving crop of sins. You have eaten the fruit of
- 5:41lies, trusting in your military might, believing that great
- 5:45armies could make your nation safe.
- 5:48Now the terrors of war will rise among your people.
- 5:52All your fortifications will fall, just as when Shalman
- 5:57destroyed Beth Arbelle. Even mothers and children were
- 6:01dashed to death there. You will share that fate,
- 6:05Bethel, because of your great wickedness, when the day of
- 6:09judgement dawns, the King of Israel will be completely
- 6:13destroyed. Oh Lord, just as your people
- 6:27long ago, we stand before you as sinful people and we have no
- 6:33right to be able to call on you and ask for your forgiveness
- 6:37because You have forgiven us so many times, far more than what
- 6:41we could ever expect. Yet here you are, our incredible
- 6:47God, standing before us with your arms open wide, inviting us
- 6:52back in because of what you have done for us through Jesus.
- 6:59Oh, thank you Jesus, that you gave up everything to forge a
- 7:03path that we can be saved, that we can be washed clean and
- 7:08presented to the Father, and that we can be invited into this
- 7:13special place of family, of acceptance, of love, and bask in
- 7:20your love. Thank you for the foretaste of
- 7:25that love that we enjoy today and the knowledge that we get to
- 7:29live basking in your presence forever and ever when this life
- 7:34is done. So we just stand before you.
- 7:39You're very grateful, children, utterly dependent on your grace.
- 7:46We thank you for Your grace and your love, and we praise you all
- 7:51in the name of Jesus, Amen.
