- 0:00Speaker 1: A Frenchman has won the French Grand Prix for the
- 0:03Speaker 1: first time and can you believe it's seventy one years,
- 0:07Speaker 1: the last time being nineteen fifty four. But the headlines
- 0:11Speaker 1: don't stop there. We had crashes, long lap penalties, last
- 0:15Speaker 1: minute bike swaps. It was absolute mayhem, to put it
- 0:19Speaker 1: kindly or politely in Lamon, and it all unfolded in
- 0:22Speaker 1: front of a record breaking crowd of three hundred and
- 0:25Speaker 1: eleven thousand screaming fans. The rain may have fallen, but
- 0:29Speaker 1: this French Grand Prix was anything but predictable. It defied expectations,
- 0:33Speaker 1: shattered records and delivered a storyline no one could have
- 0:37Speaker 1: written better. This was a Moto GP race for the ages.
- 0:41Speaker 1: But guys, welcome back to Pit Talk podcast, brought to
- 0:44Speaker 1: you by Shannons. I'm your host Rinita vmullin, and joining
- 0:47Speaker 1: me as always is Fox Motorsport editor Matt Clayton. Matt,
- 0:52Speaker 1: no funny intros this time, because the race gave us
- 0:56Speaker 1: everything and more. My first question to you, have you
- 1:00Speaker 1: caught your breath after that absolutely chaotic race.
- 1:04Speaker 2: If this podcast was an emoji, it would literally just
- 1:07Speaker 2: be the shoulder shrug, hands up emoji, like what an
- 1:10Speaker 2: earth did we just watch on Sunday night here in Australia.
- 1:14Speaker 2: And we're going to delve into a million things in
- 1:16Speaker 2: this podcast today, but I've got to say, when a
- 1:19Speaker 2: nea Pastinini has had twice the number of long lap
- 1:22Speaker 2: penalties as I've had hours of sleep in the past
- 1:24Speaker 2: forty eight hours, probably not a great equation, and you
- 1:28Speaker 2: wouldn't whatevery grand prix to be like this, but my goodness,
- 1:31Speaker 2: there was that much going on. And the thing we
- 1:34Speaker 2: just laughed about it before we hit record here. When
- 1:37Speaker 2: you're in the media space doing one of these races,
- 1:40Speaker 2: you receive a notification for every time there's a race
- 1:42Speaker 2: direction message, someone into the pits, someone crashes, there's a
- 1:45Speaker 2: long lap penalty, what have you. The previous race in
- 1:48Speaker 2: Spain had ten of those. Last night's race had one
- 1:50Speaker 2: hundred and sixty individual directions from race direction during the race,
- 1:55Speaker 2: because every two seconds there was something completely nutty happening.
- 1:58Speaker 2: And if we scratched five percent of the next however
- 2:02Speaker 2: long we're going to be on this podcast, will be
- 2:03Speaker 2: doing well. Because I don't even know where we start
- 2:05Speaker 2: with this.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I'm thinking let's start back Saturday before the sprint. Let's
- 2:11Speaker 1: go to qualifying. Because Fabio Correro managed to pull out
- 2:15Speaker 1: a lap once again from I do not know where
- 2:18Speaker 1: on his Yamaha. It seems like Fabio, being in front
- 2:21Speaker 1: of his home crowd, has just got this extra bruster
- 2:25Speaker 1: confidence from that podium that he had last weekend or
- 2:28Speaker 1: last race back in her eth. So starting off that
- 2:31Speaker 1: you thought Mark Marquez He's going to be on fire,
- 2:34Speaker 1: like Chris spoke about in the last part when we
- 2:37Speaker 1: had him. Then all of a sudden, Fabio is like, Okay,
- 2:39Speaker 1: here we go. Fabio seems to have found something and
- 2:43Speaker 1: Pacubannay is still just struggling all weekend or Friday and
- 2:47Speaker 1: early Saturday.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it's funny, like I'm getting sort of twenty nineteen
- 2:50Speaker 2: Fabio vibes again when he first came into Moto GP
- 2:53Speaker 2: and you're like, who is this guy? Why is he
- 2:55Speaker 2: so fast over one lap? And it was never sustainable.
- 2:58Speaker 2: I mean, obviously it became sustainable because he became a
- 3:00Speaker 2: world champion and a front runner, but it's kind of
- 3:03Speaker 2: it's like, you know, a retro feel of Moto GP.
- 3:05Speaker 2: It's like going back to the good old day's like, oh,
- 3:07Speaker 2: it's so nice to see Fabio up the front because
- 3:10Speaker 2: there's a certain energy I think with his personality and
- 3:13Speaker 2: the way he rides, and the fact that it's someone
- 3:15Speaker 2: getting in there and sort of bloodying the nose of
- 3:18Speaker 2: the decaddies because we know the Dcaddies are the superior
- 3:20Speaker 2: bike and we saw it in the sprees. He did
- 3:22Speaker 2: everyth he think that he could, but three better bikes
- 3:25Speaker 2: passed him to get on the podium in the sprint,
- 3:27Speaker 2: but over one lap at the moment, and he's not
- 3:29Speaker 2: able to do it every lap, But when the clock's
- 3:32Speaker 2: ticking down in Q two, he just finds something and
- 3:35Speaker 2: there's you. You mentioned the home crowd. I mean, it
- 3:38Speaker 2: makes no sense that a home crowd can give you
- 3:40Speaker 2: a tenth of a second here or a tenth of
- 3:42Speaker 2: a second there. But they willed him to that pole position.
- 3:45Speaker 2: You could feel that as you were watching it. And
- 3:48Speaker 2: the response I mean, that crowd there as the best
- 3:51Speaker 2: of times is fantastic. But the response and seeing a
- 3:54Speaker 2: guy who's an underdog in this situation putting that thing
- 3:57Speaker 2: on pole against the might of all these decadies was
- 4:00Speaker 2: fantastic TV. And yeah, the sprint was interesting on the Saturday,
- 4:05Speaker 2: but it wetted our appetite for the Sunday because we
- 4:08Speaker 2: talked about this on the preview pod last week. The
- 4:11Speaker 2: thing with Lamont, it's going to rain at some point,
- 4:13Speaker 2: you just don't know when. And the fact that we
- 4:15Speaker 2: got through Friday and Saturday and the weather was fantastic.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I'm thinking to myself, oh boy, we know what's coming
- 4:20Speaker 2: on Sunday. And yeah, I think it was going to
- 4:23Speaker 2: be an interesting race regardless. But add a little bit
- 4:26Speaker 2: of water and equals chaos at Lamon and this Onmu
- 4:29Speaker 2: was no exception.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Lamont's equals chaos. I think that's going to be the
- 4:33Speaker 1: title for this pod because it's the easiest way to
- 4:35Speaker 1: describe it. I think looking at the results from the sprint,
- 4:39Speaker 1: we know Mark Marquez became the first writer to win
- 4:43Speaker 1: six consecutive sprints. So he's now known as a mister Saturday,
- 4:46Speaker 1: and he's very adamant that he does not want to
- 4:48Speaker 1: be known as mister Saturday. He wants to be known
- 4:50Speaker 1: as mister Sunday. But Furman Aldiger, the rookie for Grissini,
- 4:55Speaker 1: Now he got on the podium in Saturday Sprint, and
- 4:58Speaker 1: we'll talk about Sunday as well. But I think I
- 5:01Speaker 1: spoke about it in our last pod. I really feel
- 5:04Speaker 1: Furman was going to get on the podium. He was due.
- 5:07Speaker 1: We could see that momentum building up. And for a
- 5:10Speaker 1: rookie round six and he's already on the podium. That's
- 5:13Speaker 1: got to be phenomenal for him and Grassini and you Caddy.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think the thing with him now is
- 5:18Speaker 2: that it's not a surprise when you see him up
- 5:20Speaker 2: there like a few rounds ago, like, okay, this is
- 5:22Speaker 2: a bit of an outlier, but this you go back
- 5:24Speaker 2: to probably a couple of rounds. I mean you're in
- 5:25Speaker 2: Katar for a round four. That was the first time
- 5:28Speaker 2: he looked super legit up inside the top six and
- 5:31Speaker 2: moving forward before it was like there's five decadies going well,
- 5:34Speaker 2: oh and Aldegaerez at the bottom end of Q two
- 5:37Speaker 2: or he's out in Q one. He's got up to
- 5:39Speaker 2: speed really quickly. And look, we know the GP twenty
- 5:42Speaker 2: four is perhaps the best Monor GP bike there's ever been.
- 5:45Speaker 2: It's clearly a great bike. But I've been impressed that
- 5:48Speaker 2: he's not done the stupid, dumb twenty year old rookie
- 5:51Speaker 2: things at all. Twenty year old rookies do because they're
- 5:54Speaker 2: so inexperienced. He's still very young in his World Championship career.
- 5:57Speaker 2: He's not like someone like a guru who's got a
- 5:59Speaker 2: few more years behind him. I'm just super impressed at
- 6:02Speaker 2: how fast he's got up to speed. And look, he's
- 6:04Speaker 2: going to be a problem for the rest of the
- 6:06Speaker 2: year for these guys. There's not a week link in
- 6:08Speaker 2: that Ducatti stable. Now he was potentially it, but six
- 6:11Speaker 2: rounds in and he looks completely legit. And yeah, a
- 6:14Speaker 2: good Saturday. And then as you said, Sunday got better
- 6:17Speaker 2: as well.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Sunday got better. So now we've pushed Friday, we pushed
- 6:20Speaker 1: Saturday out of the way. That's pretty much in a nutshell.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Let's move on to Sunday. Because if you don't know,
- 6:27Speaker 1: if you've been living under a rock for these past
- 6:29Speaker 1: twenty four hours, well turn on your Fox Sports and
- 6:32Speaker 1: turn on your KO. Because Johan Zaco won the French
- 6:36Speaker 1: Grand Prix at Lamon nineteen seconds ahead of Mark Marquees.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Can you believe that I'm gonna be jo and Zarco
- 6:46Speaker 1: won the French Grand Prix in Lamon ahead of Mark
- 6:48Speaker 1: Marquez by nineteen bloody seconds.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Yeah, extraordinary, Yeah, and it was one of those things
- 6:54Speaker 2: that you know, we talked about that record crowd in
- 6:56Speaker 2: the opener, and obviously you know Fabio's on pole, they've
- 6:59Speaker 2: got huge amount of support for him. But there's something
- 7:02Speaker 2: about Zacho because he's a little bit older and he's
- 7:05Speaker 2: a bit old school like, he's a bit of a
- 7:08Speaker 2: I mean, you know what he's like. You've dealt with
- 7:09Speaker 2: him from media capacity. He's an unusual cat, and I
- 7:12Speaker 2: mean that in the nicest possible way, in that he
- 7:15Speaker 2: there's always a story with him. I heard the other
- 7:18Speaker 2: day someone was saying that if you are driving through
- 7:21Speaker 2: the area of France where he lives and you want
- 7:23Speaker 2: to do an interview, he'll let you come and do
- 7:25Speaker 2: the interview at his house and he'll pay for your
- 7:28Speaker 2: petrol if you drive there and do the interview with him,
- 7:30Speaker 2: because you've come to see him. And it's one thing
- 7:32Speaker 2: he does. He always gives you money for petrol because
- 7:34Speaker 2: it's like, well, you've come to see me, so that's cool.
- 7:35Speaker 2: And that's like the most Johan Zako thing of all time.
- 7:38Speaker 2: That's the sort of the way he rolls. My favorite
- 7:41Speaker 2: Johan Zako story. I'm going to slightly digress here, please
- 7:44Speaker 2: tell me you've heard the story of Jack Miller's wedding.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I heard that. Zako was there and took his
- 7:50Speaker 1: guitar and serenaded them.
- 7:52Speaker 2: So he was a guest at the wedding and he
- 7:54Speaker 2: sprung this on Jack in the day's leading up. He said, Oh, look,
- 7:56Speaker 2: I've actually written you a song, and if it's okay,
- 7:59Speaker 2: i'd i to perform the song for you and Ruby
- 8:01Speaker 2: at your wedding. And I've bought my guitar with me
- 8:03Speaker 2: to Australia. It was the week before the twenty twenty
- 8:06Speaker 2: two GP at Philip Island, and so Jack's like okay,
- 8:09Speaker 2: like thinking this could go anywhere. And Johann gets up
- 8:12Speaker 2: and sits on a stool and light sort of takes
- 8:14Speaker 2: their black tie off the little tucks and here's a
- 8:16Speaker 2: little something I just made for you guys, and gets
- 8:18Speaker 2: out of the guitar and plays this song. And no
- 8:20Speaker 2: one knew this thing was coming, and everyone was completely astonished.
- 8:24Speaker 2: And if anyone else would want this all over social
- 8:26Speaker 2: media and carrying on about it, and he's just like
- 8:29Speaker 2: just doing a nice thing for a friend, and that's
- 8:30Speaker 2: just the He's just a different cap. Johann and I'm
- 8:33Speaker 2: so pleased that. I mean, when he won an Australia
- 8:36Speaker 2: in twenty twenty three, it was one of those is
- 8:38Speaker 2: this guy ever going to win a Grand Prix? He
- 8:40Speaker 2: won it an incredible style, a pass of the lead
- 8:42Speaker 2: on the last lap. Finally he was a Grand Prix winner.
- 8:45Speaker 2: I was a little concerned because it had been about
- 8:47Speaker 2: five or six years since he'd done a backflip off
- 8:49Speaker 2: the fence, and when you get into your mid thirties,
- 8:51Speaker 2: those backflips don't come quite as easily as they used to.
- 8:53Speaker 2: But as a fairy tale story, in you thirty four
- 8:57Speaker 2: years old, you're the oldest rider on the grid, you're
- 8:59Speaker 2: towards the tail end of your career. To win at
- 9:02Speaker 2: home in front of the biggest crowded motor GP history,
- 9:06Speaker 2: and not just win any old race, win a race
- 9:09Speaker 2: like that, win a race for a Honda. After Ducati
- 9:13Speaker 2: had one twenty two consecutive Grand Prix to equal the
- 9:17Speaker 2: record set by Honda in nineteen ninety seven and ninety eight,
- 9:20Speaker 2: to sort of defend Honda's honor. If you like on
- 9:23Speaker 2: home territory and it's raining and it's crazy, and it's
- 9:28Speaker 2: the sort of race that Odiohank Psycho could win, but
- 9:31Speaker 2: from the entertainment value alone and watching that crowd embrace
- 9:35Speaker 2: one of their own, it was full goosebumps. TVA. It
- 9:38Speaker 2: was absolutely fantastic to see. And there's not going to
- 9:41Speaker 2: be too many people that There'll be some disappointed people
- 9:43Speaker 2: that they didn't win, don't get me wrong, but there's
- 9:45Speaker 2: not going to be too many people that would begrudge
- 9:46Speaker 2: him the success because he's a popular guy. He goes
- 9:49Speaker 2: about it the right way and yeah, good stories follow
- 9:52Speaker 2: this guy around and it was really nice to see.
- 9:55Speaker 1: I was when you talked about the backflip just then.
- 9:57Speaker 1: I was thinking I was on the service at Philipiland
- 10:00Speaker 1: when he did the backflip when he won that race.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Goosebump's there. But last night, sitting in my living room
- 10:07Speaker 1: when we're here in Australia and I'm watching him do
- 10:10Speaker 1: that backflip. You hear Matt Berts talking about how visibly
- 10:13Speaker 1: emotional Yoann was. I was getting visibly emotional because you
- 10:17Speaker 1: just know that this guy is putting in the work.
- 10:19Speaker 1: You can see what he's doing for Honda, you can
- 10:21Speaker 1: see the journeys that he's had. Yeah, he's probably not
- 10:25Speaker 1: going to be a world champion during his Moto GP career,
- 10:28Speaker 1: but this race for him, I think, in my opinion,
- 10:32Speaker 1: is as important as winning a Moto GP world championship.
- 10:36Speaker 2: No, I completely agree. And there's something about him too
- 10:38Speaker 2: in the you know, I'm not saying that a lot
- 10:40Speaker 2: of riders are the same based on where they're from
- 10:42Speaker 2: in the world, or the way they speak or the
- 10:43Speaker 2: way they go about it, but he is a proper
- 10:45Speaker 2: one of one for mine. Like he's a bit of
- 10:48Speaker 2: an old soul and a bit of a throwback in
- 10:50Speaker 2: a lot of ways. He's probably racing in the wrong
- 10:51Speaker 2: era to a lot of degrees, but he is a
- 10:54Speaker 2: complete one of one. He is a unique guy with
- 10:57Speaker 2: the way he goes about it. And you know, one
- 10:59Speaker 2: of my favorite saying I always say on this podcast
- 11:01Speaker 2: is styles make fights. Like I said old boxing term,
- 11:03Speaker 2: like when you have different ways of going about trying
- 11:06Speaker 2: to achieve the same goal, that's what makes sport interesting.
- 11:09Speaker 2: And seeing the way he went about it and have
- 11:11Speaker 2: this success, which he'd have to do something pretty remarkable
- 11:15Speaker 2: for the rest of his career to top that, but
- 11:17Speaker 2: what a memory. But then even the way he was
- 11:19Speaker 2: processing it afterwards, he was saying I was expecting the
- 11:22Speaker 2: tears to come, but they didn't, and like you know,
- 11:24Speaker 2: one of those things. He is very, very conscious of
- 11:26Speaker 2: the way he feels about these things, and I'm sure
- 11:29Speaker 2: he'll get to like Monday or Tuesday this week and
- 11:31Speaker 2: then he'll sort of look at himself in the mirror
- 11:32Speaker 2: be like, jeez, I won the French Grand Prix, and
- 11:35Speaker 2: this huge smile will come on his face. Like you
- 11:36Speaker 2: could see last night, just the emotions and the rollercoaster
- 11:40Speaker 2: that he was going on. He was still trying to
- 11:42Speaker 2: process at all because it was a lot and I
- 11:46Speaker 2: don't think in his wildest dreams he would have thought,
- 11:48Speaker 2: you know, I'm going to win my home Grand Prix.
- 11:49Speaker 2: I think he qualified eleventh, but the seas parted because
- 11:54Speaker 2: of the way this race was run at the beginning
- 11:56Speaker 2: and the tire choices or not the various people made,
- 12:00Speaker 2: which is a I don't know what's on your run sheet,
- 12:02Speaker 2: your run sheet that's in your head for today, but
- 12:04Speaker 2: I reckon that's probably where you're going next.
- 12:06Speaker 1: That was what I was going to talk about. So
- 12:09Speaker 1: let's take it back to the grid. Now. We could
- 12:12Speaker 1: see that there was like some spots of rain forming
- 12:15Speaker 1: I've heard Jack Appleyard on the telecast saying, yeah, look
- 12:18Speaker 1: that's starting to rain a bit heavier like, but it's
- 12:20Speaker 1: not full rain. The riders then went out, but then
- 12:24Speaker 1: we I was thinking back to Cooder, Covi, Mark Marquez
- 12:29Speaker 1: with all that drama on the start, right, so we
- 12:32Speaker 1: know what the rules were, and Mike Web the thing
- 12:35Speaker 1: came up on the screen. I hope you saw that
- 12:36Speaker 1: as well. Matt Web. It was like, if the riders
- 12:39Speaker 1: come in and they changed their bikes, they have to
- 12:41Speaker 1: do a double long lap penalty. Well, it's clear that
- 12:44Speaker 1: the riders went out on slicks, came back, decided to
- 12:48Speaker 1: change the wets, and then half the grid I'm going
- 12:51Speaker 1: to say, yeah, half the grid came back in and
- 12:53Speaker 1: then decided to go back out on slicks. But the
- 12:55Speaker 1: riders who stayed on the wets was Ossie, Jack Miller,
- 12:58Speaker 1: Joan Zako, Girl Oliver I believe, and a few of
- 13:02Speaker 1: the other's Loranzo Savadori, maybe Takanakagami because at one point
- 13:06Speaker 1: it looking like Lorenzo Savadori it was going to be
- 13:08Speaker 1: on the podium during this phrase, so you think, you
- 13:11Speaker 1: know he's a villain. Writer for Jojey Martine at the moment,
- 13:14Speaker 1: so there's all this happening. Fabia Couadoroni really crashed on
- 13:18Speaker 1: the warm up lap. This is all before lights.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Out, no I know, and this is the thing. So
- 13:22Speaker 2: there were two distinct parts to this. The first formation lap,
- 13:26Speaker 2: everyone was on slicks and they all straight lined the
- 13:28Speaker 2: chicane at turned three because no one could turn because
- 13:30Speaker 2: it was raining so hard. Fabio Quadra almost dropped it
- 13:33Speaker 2: on the way to the chicine. It was so treacherous
- 13:35Speaker 2: from pol so they all came back into the pits,
- 13:38Speaker 2: which means aborted start everyone else. They all go back
- 13:41Speaker 2: out for a second formation lap out of the pits
- 13:43Speaker 2: on wet weather bikes. For some reason, on that lap
- 13:47Speaker 2: there's thirteen of them that decided, oh, it's actually not
- 13:50Speaker 2: raining hard enough, I want to go back to the
- 13:52Speaker 2: slick bike, which is that's what necessitates the double long
- 13:55Speaker 2: lap penalty for all of these guys. You mentioned the
- 13:57Speaker 2: guys that stayed on the grid with the highs that
- 14:00Speaker 2: they were on. There were eight of them out there
- 14:02Speaker 2: on drives and Savadori had rolled the dice on slicks
- 14:05Speaker 2: and was going to stay on the grid, so he
- 14:06Speaker 2: didn't have to do the double long lap. But what
- 14:09Speaker 2: was interesting you saw that shot of when they went
- 14:12Speaker 2: out on the warm up lap there were only nine
- 14:13Speaker 2: bikes on the grid and there were thirteen of them
- 14:15Speaker 2: at pit Laid exit. I was getting ripped memories of
- 14:18Speaker 2: that crazy year at the sacks of ring where they
- 14:19Speaker 2: started the race from there, which is clearly unsafe and
- 14:21Speaker 2: a bit nuts. Everyone lines up in their original grid positions,
- 14:25Speaker 2: but then at some point you have to serve that
- 14:27Speaker 2: double long lap. The really interesting one for me, and
- 14:30Speaker 2: because it's items six hundred on the list of things
- 14:32Speaker 2: to talk about today. The guy that was highest on
- 14:35Speaker 2: the grid that started the race on wets and wasn't
- 14:38Speaker 2: going to have to take a long lap penalty was
- 14:40Speaker 2: Pekobannaia in sixth place, and so afterwards he was saying,
- 14:46Speaker 2: my aim was just to go out there and circulate
- 14:50Speaker 2: and don't be on the wrong tire, and circulate and
- 14:53Speaker 2: circulate and circulate, because this is one of those days
- 14:56Speaker 2: where the weather's going to change eleven times. You just
- 14:58Speaker 2: need to be there and you need to be on
- 15:00Speaker 2: the track. And that plan went completely down the toilet
- 15:03Speaker 2: at turn three on lap one when his old teammate
- 15:06Speaker 2: and Aa Bashtianidi decided to play some ten ben bowling
- 15:09Speaker 2: at the chicane at turn three, took Banyaira out, Banyaia
- 15:14Speaker 2: slides across the track, Juan mir crashes to avoid Banyaia
- 15:18Speaker 2: and then Mia when you look at the replay, almost
- 15:21Speaker 2: takes Zarko out and Zako has to run through the
- 15:23Speaker 2: gravel trap. So this incredible Zarko win was centimeters away
- 15:27Speaker 2: from not happening on the first three corners because he
- 15:30Speaker 2: almost got skittled by Juan minat Chuaim has broken his
- 15:33Speaker 2: hand apparently, so he just cannot take a trick, and
- 15:35Speaker 2: so you've got Banyaia with a broken bike limping back
- 15:38Speaker 2: to the pits, his chance on these where the tires
- 15:40Speaker 2: is gone. Zako seventeenth after lap one and was very
- 15:44Speaker 2: lucky to still be in the race. I think he
- 15:47Speaker 2: was thirty seconds behind the race leader after one lap
- 15:50Speaker 2: and then well twenty five more laps after that. Things
- 15:53Speaker 2: took multiple twists and turns. But I think for the
- 15:58Speaker 2: Australian listeners here of those eight guys that started on
- 16:01Speaker 2: wets and I went very deep into this this morning
- 16:03Speaker 2: for a story on Fox sports dot Com that au
- 16:05Speaker 2: I mind the data, and I just wanted to know
- 16:08Speaker 2: what position Jack Miller was in in this race. He
- 16:12Speaker 2: was one of the eight guys to start on wet tires,
- 16:15Speaker 2: and because Jack has this reputation of being this guy
- 16:17Speaker 2: who reads the conditions probably better than anybody else. There
- 16:20Speaker 2: were several other writers Zarko included. He said, I was
- 16:23Speaker 2: comfortable being on the wets because Jack was. Marco Bezzeki said,
- 16:27Speaker 2: I've not ridden the aprillia in the wet. I don't
- 16:29Speaker 2: really know what's going on with this. I wasn't particularly confident.
- 16:32Speaker 2: I wanted to see what Jack was doing, and did
- 16:34Speaker 2: what he was doing. So there were eight of them
- 16:36Speaker 2: down the grid that had decided to go out on
- 16:38Speaker 2: the wets. Vannai is one of those eight. He's basically
- 16:40Speaker 2: out on one lab. And of those eight guys, yes,
- 16:44Speaker 2: it was slick tire weather for the first few laps,
- 16:47Speaker 2: but of the eight of them that started on wet tires,
- 16:50Speaker 2: Jack was comfortably the leader of that eight. And so
- 16:53Speaker 2: then when the rain really started coming down, we saw
- 16:56Speaker 2: Fabio Coutarero crash, We saw Brad bindakrash at the last
- 16:59Speaker 2: cornerhich is the key part here as the race went
- 17:03Speaker 2: from being a slick tire race to being a wet
- 17:05Speaker 2: tie race. As it was transitioning through there, Jack Miller
- 17:08Speaker 2: was fantastically placed. On about lap five, he had a
- 17:12Speaker 2: ten second lead over Johannzako, who was the next best
- 17:16Speaker 2: rider on the wet weather tires. And if it had
- 17:19Speaker 2: kept raining the way it was going, all Jack needed
- 17:22Speaker 2: to do was stay sunny side up and you were
- 17:24Speaker 2: going to have one of those races where everybody else
- 17:26Speaker 2: would have had to have pitted. And given the weather
- 17:29Speaker 2: stayed pretty stable for the rest of the race, he
- 17:31Speaker 2: was in absolute position a to win that Grand Prix.
- 17:35Speaker 2: But the key line there he needed to stay sunny
- 17:37Speaker 2: sided up. And end of lap six last corner, Kwatrara
- 17:41Speaker 2: had gone down, Bindra had gone down, some of the
- 17:43Speaker 2: others had gone down on that corner and it bit
- 17:45Speaker 2: Jack as well. And at the very least, I think
- 17:48Speaker 2: it's a podium and it very probably was a Grand
- 17:51Speaker 2: Prix win. And he high sighted with absolutely no warning,
- 17:55Speaker 2: he said afterwards. They looked at the data and he
- 17:57Speaker 2: wasn't quicker through there than any other lap point where
- 18:00Speaker 2: there was too much standing water. The grip was changing
- 18:04Speaker 2: centimeter by centimeter and he just pushed that minute bit
- 18:07Speaker 2: too far and down he went. But man, talk about
- 18:11Speaker 2: one that got away, because that's one that he needed.
- 18:14Speaker 2: And he's so good in these sorts of conditions. We've
- 18:17Speaker 2: seen that in the past, and that was one. He
- 18:20Speaker 2: is going to be kicking himself because the guy that
- 18:22Speaker 2: he was comfortably ahead of that was watching what he
- 18:25Speaker 2: was doing, that was mimicking his tire strategy. He's the
- 18:28Speaker 2: guy that's won the race and he being you and Zacho.
- 18:32Speaker 1: When I saw Jack's Instagram post, I think he is
- 18:36Speaker 1: very much looking at the glass half full with that.
- 18:38Speaker 1: I think that's what he needs to do. And you
- 18:40Speaker 1: could see that he's talking about, you know, how they're improving,
- 18:43Speaker 1: how he's feeling better. We know that these mistakes happen,
- 18:47Speaker 1: and sometimes they do happen for Jack. They're silly mistakes,
- 18:50Speaker 1: but in this instance, this is lemon in the way
- 18:52Speaker 1: like you just said, pekobad Nyaya got involved, Fabiocordorara. All
- 18:56Speaker 1: these writers are crashing out. What I think for Jack though,
- 19:00Speaker 1: is okay, he does colp some slack on socials, but
- 19:04Speaker 1: what I'm seeing is people are still respecting him. If
- 19:07Speaker 1: if these writers are looking at him, going, well, this
- 19:09Speaker 1: is Jack Miller's territory in this weather, let's follow him.
- 19:13Speaker 1: It's like what everyone did at Coder with Mark. This
- 19:15Speaker 1: is Mark seratory, We're going to copy him. This is
- 19:18Speaker 1: Jack Miller showing us Jack Miller and why he deserves
- 19:21Speaker 1: to be a Moto GP.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Absolutely, you look at the development work behind the scenes,
- 19:25Speaker 2: the fact that Yamaha is up in Q two. But
- 19:28Speaker 2: one of the things about where he crashed, I'm going
- 19:30Speaker 2: to give you a little French high school French lesson here, Renetta.
- 19:32Speaker 2: While you're here. You so the last corner with no
- 19:36Speaker 2: credit to Michael Lamonato at all, my fellow co host
- 19:38Speaker 2: on the F one Show, who thinks that all quarter
- 19:39Speaker 2: should be named after numbers. I'm a sucker for Carter names.
- 19:42Speaker 2: I love them. The last corner at Lamont is called
- 19:46Speaker 2: Record DeMont, which means connection. The reason that's important is
- 19:50Speaker 2: that the last corner is where the Bagatti circuit that
- 19:54Speaker 2: the motor GP bikes race around joins onto the circuit Lasath,
- 19:58Speaker 2: which is where they race the twenty four hours sports
- 20:00Speaker 2: car race. That last corner is where the circuit LASA
- 20:03Speaker 2: joins the Picicati Circuit. So there's two different types of
- 20:06Speaker 2: Ashfeldt on that corner at Recordermont, and so when you
- 20:10Speaker 2: can see that corner when it's semi wet, it's like
- 20:13Speaker 2: it's got a sheen on it. It's a totally different
- 20:15Speaker 2: surface at that corner. Fabio Coaateurero was saying after his
- 20:19Speaker 2: crash that he felt that it was excessively bumpy there.
- 20:21Speaker 2: But it's more slick than bumpy, I would say, and
- 20:24Speaker 2: it's a bit of a change of surface. Jack basically
- 20:27Speaker 2: had a high side with the bike completely upright and
- 20:30Speaker 2: went completely over. You saw Brad Bnder's accident and even
- 20:33Speaker 2: Coaateurero's accident there there was no warning. They were just
- 20:36Speaker 2: on the floor. And that turning point at Recorder Mot,
- 20:39Speaker 2: the connection where it joins the circuit LASA, that's where
- 20:42Speaker 2: the change of surface is. So you add a heap
- 20:44Speaker 2: of water onto there. And obviously there'd been no wet
- 20:47Speaker 2: running all weekend and you know, we know that circuit
- 20:51Speaker 2: gets used for sports car racing. It's probably the most
- 20:53Speaker 2: unique corner on the circuit because it's the one that
- 20:56Speaker 2: joins the twenty four hour track and it caught them
- 20:59Speaker 2: out and there were a couple other guys that went
- 21:00Speaker 2: down there too, so it was a confluence of yeah,
- 21:03Speaker 2: it's raining a bit more, but it was super treacherous
- 21:06Speaker 2: through there. And Zako said afterwards because obviously he had
- 21:09Speaker 2: seen what had happened to Jack, because Jack was in
- 21:11Speaker 2: front of him, you could see how easily he was
- 21:15Speaker 2: being super easy and cautious at that particular corner, because
- 21:19Speaker 2: that was the one that was like riding the tightrope.
- 21:21Speaker 2: In those weather conditions. You could take more risks on
- 21:23Speaker 2: other quarners, but that one he was just rolling through
- 21:26Speaker 2: there and taking no risks at all because three guys
- 21:29Speaker 2: ahead of him had gone down and they'd shown him
- 21:32Speaker 2: what not to do. So yeah, at about eleven pm
- 21:36Speaker 2: on a Sunday night, the old high school French came
- 21:37Speaker 2: in handy because I was thinking about that, and I thought, so,
- 21:40Speaker 2: this is why your name corners, Michael laminat as, Oh,
- 21:42Speaker 2: we don't name them after numbers, so we need to
- 21:44Speaker 2: find out these six so I win that particular battle.
- 21:48Speaker 2: That's not for debate, but I just thought it was
- 21:50Speaker 2: interesting that, Yeah, there is a change of surface at
- 21:52Speaker 2: that corner, and it caught a few of them out,
- 21:54Speaker 2: and unfortunately for Rossie fans Jack was one of the
- 21:57Speaker 2: biggest casualties.
- 21:58Speaker 1: That actually makes a lot of sense now you say that,
- 22:00Speaker 1: and as to why it does catch a lot of
- 22:02Speaker 1: the riders out there, Matt, I want to ask you
- 22:06Speaker 1: for me. If I was to go back to lapse two,
- 22:10Speaker 1: lap three, looking at that gap that Fabio Corderao had
- 22:14Speaker 1: and then even him when he took the first long
- 22:16Speaker 1: lap penalty. Out of all those riders, I'm thinking Fabio's
- 22:20Speaker 1: got a good chance here at getting on the podium
- 22:23Speaker 1: at his home Grand Prix with if the weather had stayed.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Looking back at Friday, do you think tire degregation would
- 22:31Speaker 1: have come into play with the Yamahas or do you
- 22:33Speaker 1: think that it was because of the longer distance?
- 22:36Speaker 2: YEA, interesting because so the sprint was though using a
- 22:39Speaker 2: softer compound in the sprint, it was obviously way hotter atout,
- 22:41Speaker 2: pushing way harder because it's half the distance and we
- 22:44Speaker 2: saw the back half of the sprint. Fabio had nothing
- 22:47Speaker 2: left to fight with. He'd gone out too hard, too soon.
- 22:49Speaker 2: And how much of that is just the adrenaline of
- 22:51Speaker 2: home crowd and wondering how fai he could push as
- 22:54Speaker 2: softer tire and that sort of thing. No one was racing.
- 22:56Speaker 2: That tire hadn't been dry on the Sunday anyway, so
- 22:59Speaker 2: I think he was less likely to come into as
- 23:02Speaker 2: big of a problem as he did in sprint, but
- 23:04Speaker 2: he's probably still more likely to come into more problems
- 23:07Speaker 2: and say they docaddies at this particular track. So look,
- 23:11Speaker 2: I don't think he wins the race. I could have
- 23:13Speaker 2: absolutely seen him finishing behind the two Marquez brothers, probably
- 23:17Speaker 2: probably third, which you know he would have absolutely signed
- 23:19Speaker 2: up for given the way things have been going. He
- 23:21Speaker 2: obviously had that great race at Herrez to get on
- 23:23Speaker 2: the podium there, but I thought third fourth Aldegaer was
- 23:27Speaker 2: sort of the outlier there. But I also wonder about
- 23:30Speaker 2: Aldegare's tire management over a full Grand Prix distance over
- 23:32Speaker 2: a sprint not so much of an issue. That's one
- 23:35Speaker 2: of those tires of the black art of murder GP.
- 23:38Speaker 2: You need to have the experience to know how to
- 23:39Speaker 2: manage them, and he has an entire catalog of what
- 23:42Speaker 2: five races a murder GP experience, so he's still agreed
- 23:45Speaker 2: in that regard. But I think he's probably finishing on
- 23:47Speaker 2: the podium in a normal race using air quotes, but yeah,
- 23:52Speaker 2: this was not a normal race.
- 23:53Speaker 1: So anything far from a normal race. I was just
- 23:56Speaker 1: looking on the foxmitter Sport Twitter and lapse seven looks
- 24:01Speaker 1: about when Alex and Mark came back into what their
- 24:04Speaker 1: bikes over. How's that for timing, Because by the time
- 24:08Speaker 1: they get back out, they're only like fifth or sixth
- 24:11Speaker 1: or seventh, right, so they've dropped down from leading the race.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Then rookie Aldiger stayed out there on his slicks and
- 24:17Speaker 1: doing his long laps and trying to live as long
- 24:19Speaker 1: as he can out there. But it's looking like the
- 24:21Speaker 1: Marcus brothers, and you can see Alex is just following
- 24:24Speaker 1: Mark with everything that he's doing. Right, He's like, yeah,
- 24:27Speaker 1: I'm not going to let him get away this time.
- 24:29Speaker 2: It's so funny. The two of them are like circling
- 24:31Speaker 2: each other. And it's funny anyway as his hack pic,
- 24:34Speaker 2: but it's even funnier because they're related. Because if anyone
- 24:37Speaker 2: knows what the other one's thinking, it to be those two.
- 24:39Speaker 2: So neither of them is going to give an inch.
- 24:41Speaker 2: And they are racist. It's not that they're ignoring the
- 24:44Speaker 2: other twenty guys, but they've absolutely got eyes locked on
- 24:46Speaker 2: each other. And yeah, because Mark had won the sprint
- 24:50Speaker 2: on the Saturday, hed taken the lead of the World
- 24:52Speaker 2: Championship again, and those two were determined if they were
- 24:55Speaker 2: both going out, they were going out together. They were
- 24:57Speaker 2: going to do the same thing. But I think what's
- 25:00Speaker 2: super interesting, and I've just got this up on the
- 25:02Speaker 2: screen next to me, is that, obviously, Alex Marquez's season
- 25:04Speaker 2: has been built on being incredibly consistent and not making mistakes,
- 25:09Speaker 2: and on Sunday in the Grand Prix, finally he made
- 25:12Speaker 2: a mistake. He made two of them because he crashed
- 25:14Speaker 2: once at turn three and then again at turn eleven.
- 25:18Speaker 2: That was just a really strange, wet weather bike. I
- 25:21Speaker 2: don't even think you know how that thing dropped him
- 25:22Speaker 2: on the ground. But what's so interesting is that we've
- 25:26Speaker 2: talked a lot this year about Mark throwing points away,
- 25:28Speaker 2: crash from the lead at Cota, crashed from what were
- 25:31Speaker 2: probably going to be a podium at her Wrath, before
- 25:33Speaker 2: he launched that ridiculous comeback. This might be the race
- 25:37Speaker 2: that we look back at at the end of the
- 25:38Speaker 2: year and go, okay, this is where he took a
- 25:42Speaker 2: lead and was never headed again after that. Because he's
- 25:44Speaker 2: now got a twenty two point championship lead. It's the
- 25:46Speaker 2: biggest championship lead he's had all season. What was really
- 25:50Speaker 2: key about this and I'm going to write about this
- 25:52Speaker 2: later in the week when my fingers work again. I'm
- 25:54Speaker 2: not sure when that's going to be. But the other
- 25:56Speaker 2: five guys in the standings behind Mark coming into the
- 25:59Speaker 2: weekend combined scored fewer points the marketed for the entire
- 26:04Speaker 2: weekend at La mal to a point where Peca Bannay
- 26:07Speaker 2: has had his first zero point weekend since the sprint
- 26:10Speaker 2: era began. So he didn't score a single point in
- 26:13Speaker 2: the sprints. He crashed in scoring the Grand Prix because
- 26:15Speaker 2: he finished sixteenth, he was the last classified finisher. So
- 26:18Speaker 2: if you look at the other guys on that list,
- 26:19Speaker 2: I'm just doing a quick bit of mats in my
- 26:21Speaker 2: head here, seventeen eight. So the other five guys on
- 26:23Speaker 2: the list scored twenty seven points between them, So that's
- 26:25Speaker 2: Alex Marquez, Baannai, Morbidelli, the jan Antonio and Couacharero scored
- 26:29Speaker 2: twenty seven points between them for the weekend, and Mark
- 26:32Speaker 2: scored thirty two by himself. So that's why Mark's got
- 26:35Speaker 2: this twenty two point championship lead. Now that's decisive for
- 26:38Speaker 2: me because it feels like he's made his mistakes. He'll
- 26:41Speaker 2: make more mistakes, but Alex has almost had to be
- 26:45Speaker 2: perfect to stay with him, and to expect perfection out
- 26:48Speaker 2: of a guy for twenty two rounds is not realistic.
- 26:52Speaker 2: And these are the sorts of races that trip you up.
- 26:54Speaker 2: So I don't know about you. But how interesting was
- 26:57Speaker 2: Mark after the race where he had said, if I
- 27:00Speaker 2: hadn't crashed at her Wrath last time out, eighty percent
- 27:04Speaker 2: chance I crashed today because I probably go for too much.
- 27:06Speaker 2: And in the fact that he admitted it, he said,
- 27:08Speaker 2: I know myself and I know that I would have
- 27:10Speaker 2: probably overreached and gold for it. And he said it
- 27:12Speaker 2: with a smile on his face, which you can do
- 27:13Speaker 2: when you've had such a decisive championship weekend like that.
- 27:16Speaker 2: But it's interesting that even two weeks later he was thinking,
- 27:19Speaker 2: don't do what you did at Herath, don't do what
- 27:21Speaker 2: you did at he Wrath, just telling himself, settle for second,
- 27:25Speaker 2: take the points, and it's funny to think that it's
- 27:28Speaker 2: a race. He was beaten by twenty seconds by jo Hanzako,
- 27:31Speaker 2: Yet those twenty points that he picked up on Sunday.
- 27:34Speaker 2: They could prove to be pretty significant as we move
- 27:36Speaker 2: forward now because he's now got this buffer. The pace
- 27:39Speaker 2: suggests he should have a buffer, but now he's got
- 27:41Speaker 2: the points to prove it.
- 27:42Speaker 1: I think what you were just saying then about Mark's mentality,
- 27:45Speaker 1: I was watching the race thinking the same thing, because
- 27:48Speaker 1: for him, this is my thoughts on him, is if
- 27:51Speaker 1: he knows someone's in a head and he's comfortable, and
- 27:54Speaker 1: we know Mark can ride to pretty much any condition,
- 27:57Speaker 1: he's going to chase that person. But I think this
- 28:00Speaker 1: year so far we're in round six, but I think
- 28:02Speaker 1: he's learned a lot of valuable life lessons when it
- 28:05Speaker 1: comes to racing and pushing himself that far forward to
- 28:09Speaker 1: make those silly mistakes, and I don't think he wanted
- 28:12Speaker 1: to make those silly mistakes. I'm curious to see if
- 28:15Speaker 1: on his lap board, his pit board there was anything
- 28:18Speaker 1: about Banyaya out or anything silly like that, you know,
- 28:22Speaker 1: to not egg him on, is what I'm trying to say,
- 28:26Speaker 1: as I'm wondering how much that was there.
- 28:28Speaker 2: But he's also learned the hard way that these are
- 28:31Speaker 2: the days when you bank the points that are there.
- 28:34Speaker 2: These are the days that you win world championships. They're
- 28:36Speaker 2: not the days you get the headlines for, and the
- 28:38Speaker 2: highlights for, and the big bucks for. These are the
- 28:40Speaker 2: days that you win world championships where your bain rivals
- 28:43Speaker 2: have dropped the ball, or they've had a technical difficulty,
- 28:45Speaker 2: or something's gone wrong. You take the best of what
- 28:48Speaker 2: is available to you, and you do not let that go,
- 28:51Speaker 2: because all these points count for what they count for.
- 28:54Speaker 2: And he said after he came back out after he'd
- 28:56Speaker 2: made his last bike swap, Zacho was about eight seconds
- 28:59Speaker 2: up the road, and he said, I was taking like
- 29:01Speaker 2: point three here, point five there. But the amount of
- 29:04Speaker 2: risk I was going to have to take to be
- 29:07Speaker 2: able to overcome a gap like that. Now, in the dry,
- 29:09Speaker 2: he would have won one hundred percent, gone for it,
- 29:11Speaker 2: there's no doubt. But there was too much peril in
- 29:14Speaker 2: the if you're trying to turn that point three point
- 29:16Speaker 2: five into point seven point eight. Yeah, there were a
- 29:19Speaker 2: number of laps to go. He had the laps left
- 29:21Speaker 2: to catch him, but the amount of risk he was
- 29:22Speaker 2: going to have to take to do it. There comes
- 29:24Speaker 2: a risk reward ratio there, and do you take a
- 29:28Speaker 2: stab at trying to overcome a deficit that's too much
- 29:31Speaker 2: for the sake of five war points, or do you
- 29:32Speaker 2: bank the twenty points and get out of there with
- 29:34Speaker 2: a significant lead, and you know, the ball's absolutely back
- 29:38Speaker 2: in his court. Because the only reason that Alex Marquez
- 29:41Speaker 2: as good as he has been was in the Championship
- 29:43Speaker 2: League going into Lemon was because market allowed it to
- 29:46Speaker 2: happen by making mistakes. And so these are the days
- 29:49Speaker 2: you bank the points and you move on and you
- 29:51Speaker 2: lift to five another day.
- 29:53Speaker 1: I want to talk about Miguel Lavera really quickly because
- 29:55Speaker 1: when they were bringing up the tire choices on the
- 29:57Speaker 1: side of the screen, correct if I'm wrong, but did
- 30:01Speaker 1: majority of the guys on wets have the soft rare
- 30:04Speaker 1: great and Miguel was on the medium rare? So is
- 30:07Speaker 1: that why he dropped back so quickly? Just couldn't maintain
- 30:09Speaker 1: the heat in the time.
- 30:11Speaker 2: I think it was a bit of that. I mean,
- 30:12Speaker 2: I think he's nowhere near fully fit. It's the first
- 30:14Speaker 2: time he's been back since Argentina. He's had that shoulder
- 30:17Speaker 2: ligament issue, so he was nowhere near sort of Miguel
- 30:20Speaker 2: or are apace. All weekend he is down the back,
- 30:23Speaker 2: and that was one of those ones that perhaps the
- 30:25Speaker 2: soft was on a bit more of a knife edge,
- 30:27Speaker 2: or you had to push it a lot harder to
- 30:29Speaker 2: keep it in the temperature window. So perhaps he offered
- 30:32Speaker 2: for opted for a bit of safety there. I mean,
- 30:35Speaker 2: he's not going into that race thinking that he's going
- 30:37Speaker 2: to be fighting for You know, if he made the
- 30:39Speaker 2: top ten, he would have been ecstatic. And here we are,
- 30:42Speaker 2: what you know, eight laps from the end of his
- 30:43Speaker 2: second because everyone else has made mistakes and they've done
- 30:47Speaker 2: bike swaps, and he's up there going for a great result.
- 30:50Speaker 2: And he slid down to seventh, though some faster guys
- 30:52Speaker 2: came past, but he was still on for a great result.
- 30:54Speaker 2: You'll never guess what corner he crashed at though, the
- 30:57Speaker 2: last corner. So both Pramat Gamahas were in the skin
- 31:00Speaker 2: at the final court. Another guy to go down on
- 31:02Speaker 2: that changing surface that we talked about. But man, if
- 31:05Speaker 2: you're Pramak, you must be looking at that saying we
- 31:07Speaker 2: could have had a win in a top five. You know,
- 31:10Speaker 2: things are gone well and at worst we might have
- 31:12Speaker 2: had a podium and another top ten. And you leave
- 31:15Speaker 2: there with nothing and it's not because you know, they
- 31:18Speaker 2: actually made the correct call. They had both their riders
- 31:20Speaker 2: on the right tires at the right time. They were
- 31:22Speaker 2: really happy with their strategy. Some days these things, you
- 31:25Speaker 2: can make every right decision and it still doesn't come
- 31:28Speaker 2: up for you, and Oliver was part of that. And
- 31:31Speaker 2: a really difficult weekend for them. But as you mentioned before,
- 31:35Speaker 2: Yamaha's been good. They're coming. It's pretty clear that they're
- 31:38Speaker 2: making a lot of progress. But I just didn't get
- 31:40Speaker 2: the results that they probably should have.
- 31:42Speaker 1: That high side when I saw that for mcguil, felt
- 31:44Speaker 1: that in my bones that one.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Well, when you know guys come off a dislicated shoulder
- 31:50Speaker 2: as well, you're just thinking where you're going to land,
- 31:51Speaker 2: because when you're in the air like that, that's just
- 31:53Speaker 2: a total lottery. So yeah, I did WinCE a little
- 31:55Speaker 2: bit as he was in the air. I grew yeah
- 31:57Speaker 2: looking at.
- 31:58Speaker 1: The results, So yes, Johann Zark was a first ahead
- 32:00Speaker 1: of Mirk Marquez and Ferman Aldiger did the double back
- 32:03Speaker 1: to back podiums for the rookie like we said, But
- 32:06Speaker 1: then I was quite shocked at this's Pedro Acosta fourth,
- 32:09Speaker 1: Maverick Vinalez fifth. So now Vignalez is still kind of
- 32:13Speaker 1: leading the way, but Pedro Ocosta's gone. Move over, Vannialez.
- 32:15Speaker 1: I'm the main dog here at KTM, and I'm going
- 32:18Speaker 1: to take home the first KTM physician for me. Looking
- 32:22Speaker 1: at that, I think that's the confidence that boost that
- 32:24Speaker 1: he needs. Because we've said it so many times. You
- 32:28Speaker 1: can just tell that a Costa is not happy. I
- 32:31Speaker 1: remember everything.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Definitely needed it. It was a result that he's been
- 32:34Speaker 2: being for for a while. It was a good result
- 32:37Speaker 2: on a difficult day where a lot of things could
- 32:38Speaker 2: have gone wrong. We know he was coming in off
- 32:40Speaker 2: arm pump surgery after the previous race at Heretz. So
- 32:43Speaker 2: to score your best Grand Prix result of the season again,
- 32:46Speaker 2: when you're nowhere, you're fully right. And I mean, let's
- 32:49Speaker 2: face it, since Katar Vignalez has been clearly the best
- 32:52Speaker 2: of the KTM riders, we're now talking about super consistent
- 32:55Speaker 2: Maverick Vinales just top five every weekend. I mean, I'm
- 32:58Speaker 2: still waiting for the bubble to burst on that one.
- 32:59Speaker 2: But that three straight weekends that he's put this together now,
- 33:02Speaker 2: so I think once it's nice and nice and second
- 33:05Speaker 2: is a coincidence and the third weekend I guess it's
- 33:07Speaker 2: a trend now, so this is just what Maverick is.
- 33:09Speaker 2: But good weekend for a cost of for sure. But yeah,
- 33:13Speaker 2: a few extenuating circumstances, but I think you'll be pleased
- 33:16Speaker 2: to get out of there with some good points and
- 33:17Speaker 2: not hurt himself because you know, those extra two weeks
- 33:20Speaker 2: between now and Silver Study's gonna heal quite a lot.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I think, you know, even just talking about this race
- 33:25Speaker 1: and then when Chris was on and talking about his race. Okay,
- 33:29Speaker 1: so it's about luck, but it's also about the skill
- 33:32Speaker 1: and just staying on the bike right. So clearly, you know,
- 33:35Speaker 1: circumstances come into play with your results or when you
- 33:38Speaker 1: go in to swap your bikes or whatnot, but you
- 33:39Speaker 1: also have to stay on the bike to finish the
- 33:42Speaker 1: race well.
- 33:43Speaker 2: And what was interesting, like listening to Zarko afterwards, he
- 33:45Speaker 2: was saying where it was so hard is that he
- 33:47Speaker 2: was in the lead on lap eight. There's eighteen laps
- 33:50Speaker 2: to go. He knows he's got a significant advantage. And
- 33:53Speaker 2: it's on days like that where you lose your focus
- 33:57Speaker 2: by one percent and you go slot off light, or
- 34:00Speaker 2: you touch a white line or you clip a curb
- 34:03Speaker 2: and you saw during the race Luccio Chechanel I was
- 34:05Speaker 2: over the pit walls like just chill out, like calm down.
- 34:09Speaker 2: And I think Zarko was of a mind that I
- 34:11Speaker 2: feel like I'm under control here. If I am going
- 34:13Speaker 2: to start deliberately slowing down because I've got a buffer,
- 34:15Speaker 2: that's where I'm going to get out of the zone
- 34:17Speaker 2: and I'm going to make a mistake. So I think
- 34:19Speaker 2: he was being super cautious at the last corner, like
- 34:21Speaker 2: I mentioned, but for him, because he had no one
- 34:24Speaker 2: behind him, there wasn't anyone pushing him. This is a
- 34:27Speaker 2: victory that had to come to him. He wasn't going
- 34:29Speaker 2: out to get it. And that's where it's so different
- 34:32Speaker 2: from that Australia twenty twenty three win because I think
- 34:34Speaker 2: he was fourth going into the last lap of that
- 34:36Speaker 2: race and then made that really ballsy pass of Juge
- 34:38Speaker 2: Martin to take the lead. Martin was like the carrot
- 34:40Speaker 2: that day. He was pursuing that to get to the victory.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Didn't have time to really think about strategy catch the
- 34:45Speaker 2: guy in front yesterday. The only thing he had was time.
- 34:48Speaker 2: They would have been the longest eighteen laps of his
- 34:51Speaker 2: life with that crowd, and he could hear the noise
- 34:54Speaker 2: and see the French flags flying and every lap is
- 34:57Speaker 2: it raining a bit more? Is it raining a bit less?
- 34:59Speaker 2: You can almost have two much time to think, so
- 35:01Speaker 2: mentally for him to hold his nerve, there's a lot
- 35:05Speaker 2: of pressure, like it's yeah, of course, it's pressure when
- 35:07Speaker 2: you've got someone on your back wheel. It's also a
- 35:09Speaker 2: lot of pressure when you've got too much time to
- 35:10Speaker 2: think writing one of these things. And let's face that,
- 35:13Speaker 2: not many races play out like Lamon did on Sunday,
- 35:16Speaker 2: so it's an unusual situation for these guys. They're not
- 35:19Speaker 2: accustomed to this, and it's when you've got time to
- 35:22Speaker 2: think that it's almost more dangerous than when you squabbly
- 35:24Speaker 2: get a pack of three or four other guys.
- 35:26Speaker 1: He said that in the park for my interview, or
- 35:28Speaker 1: maybe it was even in that the little room that
- 35:30Speaker 1: they go into before the podium that he goes. Those
- 35:33Speaker 1: last three laps took so long, and it's already a
- 35:36Speaker 1: long lap time here in Lamn. You can just imagine
- 35:39Speaker 1: if he thought about something else for a split second
- 35:43Speaker 1: in those conditions, like you said, you run over a
- 35:45Speaker 1: white line, hit the ripple strip, there goes your chance
- 35:48Speaker 1: at winning. But for him to go those last three
- 35:51Speaker 1: laps were so long and they going bloody fast around
- 35:54Speaker 1: that track.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I just had to find the quote so I've
- 35:56Speaker 2: used at the sport. I couldn't remember exactly what it was,
- 35:58Speaker 2: but he said sometimes you need to go and catch
- 36:01Speaker 2: a victory. Today I had to wait for it, and
- 36:04Speaker 2: I love that. It's the most Arco quote of all time.
- 36:08Speaker 2: But you can see exactly what he was saying because
- 36:10Speaker 2: at Philip Island a couple of years ago, it's like
- 36:11Speaker 2: you've got to go and get this thing and take
- 36:13Speaker 2: it off somebody else whereas on Sunday La morn like
- 36:16Speaker 2: it was his to lose, and sometimes that's that's even
- 36:18Speaker 2: worse than having somebody to go chase.
- 36:20Speaker 1: I'm just looking at the results from from the race
- 36:23Speaker 1: and so the crashed riders. Should we go through those?
- 36:26Speaker 1: So not finish, not finished first lap Juan Mia unfortunately,
- 36:30Speaker 1: like you said, possible broken hand. We obviously do not
- 36:33Speaker 1: want that. We want him to be racing, but that's
- 36:36Speaker 1: just unfortunately a typical juanmir To situation to be in.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Moving on, then we had Fabrio Cordero, Jack Miller, Brad Binda,
- 36:44Speaker 1: Miguel Olivera, Alex Marquez, they are all the not classified.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Then you go to sixteenth place, Peco Banyaya. Now we
- 36:52Speaker 1: mentioned him obviously crashing. How was it when he came
- 36:56Speaker 1: back into the pits to try and swap his bike
- 36:59Speaker 1: and the mechanics, they're like, mate, you've got no bike
- 37:02Speaker 1: to swap to. What are you going to do? You
- 37:05Speaker 1: have to just try and finish. And it's a shame
- 37:07Speaker 1: that he's only finished sixty one place earlier. But the
- 37:11Speaker 1: gap obviously is I'm just trying to see if I
- 37:13Speaker 1: can find that here. It's not saying they're Morbidelli Bazeki.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Then it starts to go through. But if you look
- 37:18Speaker 1: at your top ten, both track House riders managed to
- 37:22Speaker 1: go into that top ten this weekend, and I think
- 37:24Speaker 1: for those guys, they're a new team and MERITOGP in
- 37:27Speaker 1: this situation. Probably a lot of the mechanics, like the
- 37:31Speaker 1: decisions that they're having to make, the pressure that they're
- 37:34Speaker 1: under with bringing the riders in, what tied to choose,
- 37:36Speaker 1: et cetera, et cetera. Raoul you said off air, but
- 37:40Speaker 1: seventh place, okay, he was seventy seconds behind you on Zaco.
- 37:44Speaker 1: He's still finished in that top ten.
- 37:46Speaker 2: And it's just the thing. You look at that list
- 37:48Speaker 2: of guys that you reeled off that didn't finish the race,
- 37:50Speaker 2: and then some guys that did like best, the best
- 37:52Speaker 2: you knowed. He had four long lap penalties and crash twice.
- 37:55Speaker 2: I mean that's like a half a season for most people,
- 37:58Speaker 2: and so it was three points, and he still got
- 37:59Speaker 2: three points. And there's all this nonsense going on elsewhere,
- 38:01Speaker 2: but this was a day where if you are on
- 38:05Speaker 2: a not so great bike or you're having a difficult season,
- 38:07Speaker 2: you look through these results. Takannakagami, as a wild card
- 38:11Speaker 2: for Honda, finished sixth. It's the best result he's had
- 38:14Speaker 2: since twenty twenty one. He was another guy on the
- 38:17Speaker 2: wet weather tires and he just circulated and circulated and circulated,
- 38:20Speaker 2: and he finished a minute behind Zako, and he banked
- 38:23Speaker 2: a massive amount of points. You mentioned the track house guys.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Lorenzo Savadora career best result finished nights on Juge Martin's bike,
- 38:31Speaker 2: because obviously juj is still out injured, so this was
- 38:33Speaker 2: another day where guys down the back had a chance
- 38:37Speaker 2: to make their mark best result of the season for Fernandez,
- 38:40Speaker 2: as you mentioned, this was a day that was all
- 38:42Speaker 2: about keeping your head and staying in the game. And
- 38:45Speaker 2: what was interesting for me is that you've got all
- 38:47Speaker 2: these really experienced guys who've won Grand Prix who were
- 38:50Speaker 2: just Binder had multiple crashes before he finished Bashtyin and
- 38:54Speaker 2: he went down a couple of times. More Bdelli went
- 38:55Speaker 2: down a couple of times. And then you've got fermin
- 38:57Speaker 2: Aldegerre and he sticks Grand Prix that was didn't put
- 39:01Speaker 2: a foot roll of finished third. And then you've got
- 39:03Speaker 2: Takannaka Army who hasn't raced since the end of last year,
- 39:06Speaker 2: and of all the races to make a wild card.
- 39:08Speaker 2: In my goodness, he would have slept well last night
- 39:10Speaker 2: and here he is scoring his best result for five years.
- 39:12Speaker 2: So it was we'll look at this top ten at
- 39:16Speaker 2: the end of the season and then we'll go, oh
- 39:17Speaker 2: my god, that happened. It's going to be one of
- 39:19Speaker 2: those races because everywhere you looked it was complete mayhem.
- 39:22Speaker 2: But it was fantastic TV. It was very very difficult.
- 39:26Speaker 2: I'm not going to lie for me to get my
- 39:27Speaker 2: head around and try and like, how do I encapsulate
- 39:31Speaker 2: what happened in a story here. I could have written
- 39:33Speaker 2: a story for each of the twenty two of them,
- 39:35Speaker 2: because it was that much going on. But these are
- 39:37Speaker 2: the nights when you love this gig because you love
- 39:40Speaker 2: being able to absorb all this and then try to
- 39:42Speaker 2: make sense of it. But this is going to be
- 39:44Speaker 2: a Grand Prix that I know. We've got another race
- 39:46Speaker 2: in two weeks time, but I think we'll be talking
- 39:47Speaker 2: about it pretty much every day between now and then.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Oh and this is going to be Grand Prix that
- 39:51Speaker 1: six in Zarco's mind forever. He is never going to
- 39:54Speaker 1: forget that feeling of winning in front of his home crowd.
- 39:59Speaker 1: So that what do you mind to wrap some Moto
- 40:01Speaker 1: GP as best as we can match? You have any
- 40:03Speaker 1: more fun facts for our friends here who are curious
- 40:06Speaker 1: about Mojipi, Because you are the statman, the scatman, the statman, I'll.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Be anything at this point. If it involved coffee, I'm
- 40:14Speaker 2: probably up for it. But there was the thing that
- 40:17Speaker 2: was amazing for me is that you know the thoughts
- 40:20Speaker 2: of Ducatti not winning a Grand Prix based on what
- 40:23Speaker 2: we've seen in the past twelve months. At the moment,
- 40:25Speaker 2: it's like, well, if there's sixty caddies, they're probably finishing.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Five of them are probably finishing in the top six.
- 40:30Speaker 2: The fact that you had Honda, who previously held this
- 40:33Speaker 2: record of twenty two straight wins, being the manufacturer to
- 40:36Speaker 2: beat Dicadi. You wouldn't have thought it was going to
- 40:38Speaker 2: be a Honda that was going to win this streak.
- 40:40Speaker 2: But there's so much going on in this race. It
- 40:42Speaker 2: was Zarko's one hundred and fiftieth start, it was a
- 40:44Speaker 2: landmark start for him. You mentioned before, you know, first
- 40:47Speaker 2: Frenchman to win a Grand Prix at home since nineteen
- 40:51Speaker 2: fifty four. There's just so much going on. And then
- 40:54Speaker 2: I think the key one you mentioned that weekend crowd
- 40:57Speaker 2: three hundred and eleven thousand or something over the course.
- 41:00Speaker 1: So the weekend eleven thousand.
- 41:02Speaker 2: That's absolutely awesome. And there was an one thing that
- 41:06Speaker 2: Motor GP's doing a fantastic job off at the moment
- 41:08Speaker 2: is the who was flying the drone around the start
- 41:11Speaker 2: finish straight at these circuit hat tip to you, sir
- 41:13Speaker 2: or Abdam, whoever you are, because in encapsulating what that
- 41:17Speaker 2: crowd was like last night and that drone's just hovering
- 41:19Speaker 2: over the top of the start finished straight before the race,
- 41:21Speaker 2: and it was you could not see a spare place
- 41:25Speaker 2: seat up against a fence where there could be another person.
- 41:28Speaker 2: That thing was just absolutely rammed with people. And full
- 41:32Speaker 2: credit to the promoters and everyone that turned up there.
- 41:34Speaker 2: And if you bought a ticket for the French Grand Prix,
- 41:36Speaker 2: I think you'd be looking to get your next year's
- 41:38Speaker 2: ticket pretty quick, smart, because that was a pretty awesome
- 41:40Speaker 2: sporting theater.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Guys, if you've watched the French Grand Prix once, go
- 41:45Speaker 1: back and watch it again. I did it just before
- 41:47Speaker 1: we came on here to chat at Motor GP, purely
- 41:50Speaker 1: just to try and dissect and see what I missed
- 41:53Speaker 1: last night, because at one point you're watching one thing,
- 41:56Speaker 1: you're seeing the replay in the corner of the screen
- 41:58Speaker 1: where someone else's you're hearing about writers coming in, who's
- 42:02Speaker 1: getting extra long lap penalties like Bashiani. That first third,
- 42:07Speaker 1: even halfway through that race, it was insane and I
- 42:10Speaker 1: think one of the best motor GIP races. It kept
- 42:13Speaker 1: me on the edge of the seat the whole entire
- 42:15Speaker 1: time so well.
- 42:16Speaker 2: And yeah, and there's also that point where I don't
- 42:18Speaker 2: know whether you do this as well, I've got the life.
- 42:20Speaker 2: I've got sort of mission control happening here with all
- 42:22Speaker 2: the screens and what have you. The life timing is
- 42:24Speaker 2: always slightly ahead of the TV pictures, so if you
- 42:27Speaker 2: don't want to spoil, don't look at your lifetiming and
- 42:29Speaker 2: then look at the TV pictures go oh, no, someone's
- 42:31Speaker 2: tumbling down the order, which is what I did when
- 42:33Speaker 2: Jack went out. Unfortunately, I saw his name tumbling down
- 42:36Speaker 2: the sheet and went, oh, no, don't tell me he's
- 42:38Speaker 2: gone off. That thing was It was like a like
- 42:41Speaker 2: a slot machine in a casino last night. There were
- 42:43Speaker 2: just naves going up and down, and it was all
- 42:45Speaker 2: over the place. You know, someone's in for a long
- 42:47Speaker 2: lap penalty, someone's doing a bike swap. There were several
- 42:50Speaker 2: points in that race where I thought, how many long
- 42:53Speaker 2: laps has this guy done? Has this guy pitted? What
- 42:56Speaker 2: tires is he on? It was complete chaos trying to
- 42:58Speaker 2: keep up with it. That was the first sort of
- 43:00Speaker 2: eight to ten laps, and then the last fifteen laps
- 43:03Speaker 2: was is Zarko going to hold his nerve here? Because
- 43:07Speaker 2: that was the story. It was not particularly close in
- 43:10Speaker 2: terms of will to will, but jeez, it was tense
- 43:13Speaker 2: because a he's not a guy who wins gron Prix
- 43:15Speaker 2: very often, but b because it was home and history
- 43:18Speaker 2: and how emotional it was going to be, so it
- 43:20Speaker 2: was super tense to watch. But yeah, if we're going
- 43:23Speaker 2: to do this every second or third race, it's going
- 43:24Speaker 2: to take years off my life. But I think I'll
- 43:26Speaker 2: enjoy it, so signed me up.
- 43:27Speaker 1: That's one was just thinking. I'm like, you know, we've
- 43:29Speaker 1: spoke about this race, has been forty five minutes or so,
- 43:32Speaker 1: There's still so much that we could talk. But I go,
- 43:36Speaker 1: you just got to watch it. You just got to
- 43:38Speaker 1: watch it and then possibly watch it again, maybe a
- 43:40Speaker 1: third time, just to try and dissect everything. As a
- 43:43Speaker 1: fan though, watching the international broadcast with Matt Burton Lewis Studby,
- 43:46Speaker 1: I loved when they had Bradley Smith on this weekend.
- 43:50Speaker 1: For me, sitting there reminded me of Simon Crafer. But Bradley,
- 43:53Speaker 1: you know, he did fairly well in mitogp won races
- 43:56Speaker 1: in the law classes. Now he's doing very very well
- 43:58Speaker 1: on that Holly Davids and Baggers Championship. But hearing him,
- 44:03Speaker 1: hearing him talk about what's happening on track for me
- 44:07Speaker 1: was really really good at a clear, clearer understanding. But
- 44:10Speaker 1: one thing I loved was when they were getting ready,
- 44:13Speaker 1: I think for the when they finally decided to start
- 44:15Speaker 1: the race. After the red flag, Radley Smith goes, I'm
- 44:19Speaker 1: nervous and I'm not even racing out there, so could
- 44:21Speaker 1: you imagine just the feeling of what is going to
- 44:25Speaker 1: happen at the start? And then Joan Zarco wins well.
- 44:28Speaker 2: And he's been in races like that too, where you
- 44:30Speaker 2: have to make all these decisions on the fly and
- 44:32Speaker 2: they can make or break your race, you know, quarter
- 44:34Speaker 2: by corner, lap by lap, So he was nervous for
- 44:37Speaker 2: everybody else, but probably quite relieved that he got to
- 44:39Speaker 2: sit and talk about it rather than actually have to
- 44:41Speaker 2: execute it. And that's these riders make, you know, pretty
- 44:43Speaker 2: frustrated spectators a lot of the time, as you know,
- 44:45Speaker 2: having a brother as one. But I'm sure Chris was
- 44:48Speaker 2: watching that race last night sort of with his rider's
- 44:51Speaker 2: eye on, but thinking, thank goodness, I'm not out they're
- 44:53Speaker 2: having to do this, because that was a stressful night
- 44:56Speaker 2: for everyone watching Littlelone participating.
- 44:59Speaker 1: Then there's rewind the clock Moto two dry race. Sena
- 45:03Speaker 1: agis struggled. He struggled all weekend and he had not
- 45:07Speaker 1: the best qualifying I think he was fourteenth, and I
- 45:09Speaker 1: think he ended similar position off memory fourteenth. Senna's having
- 45:16Speaker 1: a really interesting season. He's having very high highs, but
- 45:19Speaker 1: then he's having these I want to say low lows.
- 45:22Speaker 1: You know, it is still only his second year, but
- 45:25Speaker 1: it was a dry tracker track that he'srased at before
- 45:28Speaker 1: considering his teammate Manu Gonzales Pol won the race. You know,
- 45:33Speaker 1: he's consistently well. I'm wondering if it's just this missing
- 45:38Speaker 1: piece And it's so easy for me to say, sitting
- 45:39Speaker 1: here on my sofa, you know, talking about that, but
- 45:42Speaker 1: what is that missing piece for Senna to progressively be
- 45:44Speaker 1: closer to the front. So he is fighting with the
- 45:46Speaker 1: likes of Manu and Jake Dixon and those guys who
- 45:49Speaker 1: were fighting for the championship.
- 45:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I think to be honest, it's kind of normal
- 45:53Speaker 2: of a young writer who's in a fairly early stage
- 45:56Speaker 2: of his World championship journey in that you can see
- 45:59Speaker 2: the talent when he gets on the podium, which he's
- 46:01Speaker 2: done several times now. So the good weekends are very
- 46:03Speaker 2: very good, but there's a spikiness to the result curve.
- 46:05Speaker 2: At the moment, it's not you'd like to have less
- 46:08Speaker 2: spikes and more of a flat line on that curve,
- 46:10Speaker 2: But I think that's something that will come with age
- 46:13Speaker 2: and experience and having to go through weekends like that.
- 46:15Speaker 2: There's some weekends where you know, you look at Murdo
- 46:18Speaker 2: GP how many times last year was pecab Annoor absolutely
- 46:21Speaker 2: nowhere on a Friday and you're like, oh, he's in trouble.
- 46:24Speaker 2: But he had the experience and the confidence and the
- 46:27Speaker 2: know how and the data bank to call upon where
- 46:31Speaker 2: he could engineer himself out of a difficult position. And
- 46:34Speaker 2: this is so by the time you get to Sunday,
- 46:35Speaker 2: he's ready to go. Sen is so young and so
- 46:38Speaker 2: early in his World Championship journey that the talent's there
- 46:41Speaker 2: and the speeds there, but you can't fast track that
- 46:44Speaker 2: experience card, right, So that's something that he will get
- 46:47Speaker 2: over time. So maybe this is his destiny this year.
- 46:50Speaker 2: The bike is good, there'll be weekends where he's clearly
- 46:53Speaker 2: very good, and there'll be other weekends where he's a
- 46:54Speaker 2: bit anonymous, and that will probably flatten out over time.
- 46:58Speaker 2: So I guess we've enjoyed some the highs. This weekend
- 47:01Speaker 2: was probably one that you just sort of shrug your
- 47:02Speaker 2: shoulders and move on, learn from it and try and
- 47:04Speaker 2: you know, get better the next time this presents itself.
- 47:07Speaker 2: But I also don't think we're going to start seeing
- 47:09Speaker 2: him fighting for fourteenth most weeks. I think we'll see
- 47:11Speaker 2: him back up the front before too long, and.
- 47:13Speaker 1: That's what we want as Ossie fans. But I tell you,
- 47:16Speaker 1: Moto three, if I was on the edge of my seat,
- 47:20Speaker 1: my poor neighbors were just probably going, what is she watching?
- 47:25Speaker 1: Because them going, God, Joe, come.
- 47:27Speaker 3: On, Joe, you can do this, Joe, hold on to it.
- 47:30Speaker 3: He was so close, I'm talking, so bloody bloody close
- 47:35Speaker 3: to getting that first ever Moto Iree victory. And we
- 47:39Speaker 3: were talking in our group chat afterwards, and you send
- 47:41Speaker 3: me a message going, we knew Munyo's was going to
- 47:44Speaker 3: do that. We knew he was going to try and
- 47:46Speaker 3: go for the win.
- 47:47Speaker 1: I mean obviously relegated that Munos was cross the line
- 47:51Speaker 1: and relegated down to third, which meant Kelso second, and
- 47:53Speaker 1: then Ruaida, who right place, right time, just sitting at
- 47:57Speaker 1: that bag, managed to take better the last corner as well.
- 48:02Speaker 1: That last corner that we've talked so much about.
- 48:04Speaker 2: Ye the Stephen Bradbury approach by Rueda, who just sit
- 48:09Speaker 2: there and let everyone else wipe each other out. But
- 48:11Speaker 2: it's funny. I was the opposite to you, and I
- 48:13Speaker 2: was really you know, I loved the way Joel raced
- 48:16Speaker 2: last night, and this is the sort of race we've
- 48:17Speaker 2: been wanting from him. Get to the front, boss the race,
- 48:20Speaker 2: take control, split the pack. There's only three of them
- 48:22Speaker 2: at the end the last five laps. I was a
- 48:26Speaker 2: bit different to you, and then I'm going, all right,
- 48:28Speaker 2: so when is Munyo's just going to ride into the
- 48:30Speaker 2: side of him? Because you know it's going to happen,
- 48:32Speaker 2: because that's the way he races. That's what his reputation is.
- 48:35Speaker 2: If it had been anyone else that was behind him,
- 48:37Speaker 2: I'd be like, all right, this will be curious. I
- 48:39Speaker 2: wonder how this is going to go. And the only
- 48:42Speaker 2: mystery in the last lap with Muna's was he going
- 48:44Speaker 2: to take Joel and himself out or just himself out
- 48:47Speaker 2: or just Joel out? Because you knew it was coming.
- 48:49Speaker 2: And if you're Ruaida, this is where he played that
- 48:51Speaker 2: super smart. This is why he's leading that Championship was like,
- 48:54Speaker 2: I could go and fight these guys to the win,
- 48:56Speaker 2: but I might not have to. I'll just sit here
- 48:58Speaker 2: at a respectable distance. I've got a championship lead here,
- 49:01Speaker 2: and if something goes on in front, which given the
- 49:04Speaker 2: nature of one of the two people in those two
- 49:05Speaker 2: at the front, there's a fair chance that's going to happen,
- 49:08Speaker 2: I'll just sit here and sail through. And I think
- 49:09Speaker 2: he led the entire race for one corner and that's
- 49:12Speaker 2: how you end up with twenty five World Championship points.
- 49:14Speaker 2: But I don't know what Joel was like behind the scenes,
- 49:17Speaker 2: but great a for diplomacy. I thought he handled that
- 49:22Speaker 2: incredibly well given the circumstances. But I think that's all
- 49:26Speaker 2: part of the evolution of Joel in that in the past,
- 49:29Speaker 2: if he was having a result like this, it'll be like, well,
- 49:31Speaker 2: how long is it going to be until I'm back
- 49:32Speaker 2: up there again? Because they weren't the norm for him.
- 49:34Speaker 2: This is just what he does now, and so this
- 49:37Speaker 2: is why he's going so well in the Championship. That
- 49:39Speaker 2: first wins coming, it's going to happen this year. There's
- 49:41Speaker 2: probably going to be a few of them. He just
- 49:44Speaker 2: had the great misfortune of having the one guy that
- 49:46Speaker 2: you do not want behind you in that situation on
- 49:49Speaker 2: the last lap. And I don't know, I don't like
- 49:53Speaker 2: races being decided by stuff on the last lap that
- 49:55Speaker 2: you wouldn't get away within the other laps. And the
- 49:57Speaker 2: fact that he had to drop one position. Okay, cool
- 50:00Speaker 2: still didn't win the race. I'm wondering what the penalty
- 50:02Speaker 2: is if Joel isn't skillful enough to stay on the
- 50:05Speaker 2: bike and he falls off, So does Munos get a
- 50:08Speaker 2: long lap for the next race? Like how we adjudicating this.
- 50:11Speaker 2: It was the fact that Joel actually managed to keep
- 50:13Speaker 2: going across the line in third place that meant the
- 50:15Speaker 2: penalty was probably less than it could have been because
- 50:17Speaker 2: that's not a racing move, Like I'm all for a
- 50:19Speaker 2: bit of hard racing, but the inevitability of him doing
- 50:22Speaker 2: something dumb like that in the last corner you could
- 50:24Speaker 2: see it coming five laps away.
- 50:27Speaker 1: I was so hoping though, when Munia's were await or
- 50:30Speaker 1: we're battling out, that they would just keep messing around
- 50:33Speaker 1: with each other and that would allow Joel to break away.
- 50:35Speaker 1: That's what I was screaming at the TV to happen.
- 50:38Speaker 1: But yeah, like you said in the group Chatty, it's
- 50:40Speaker 1: just with him with Munio's being there, we knew it
- 50:43Speaker 1: was going to happen. Like you said, Joel in Park
- 50:46Speaker 1: fir May afterwards. For me, same thing I thought. Okay, Joel,
- 50:49Speaker 1: two point five is here and he's here to stay.
- 50:52Speaker 1: We're seeing that with six rounds in and he's consistently
- 50:54Speaker 1: been up the front. But we've seen it before. Consistency
- 50:57Speaker 1: is what wins championships. Okay, we know he's fighting. I
- 51:01Speaker 1: think is he correct if for wrong? Is he third
- 51:03Speaker 1: in the championship at the third I believe yes, yeah,
- 51:05Speaker 1: Look there's still only two places ahead of him to
- 51:08Speaker 1: take that title and we're only six rounds in, and
- 51:10Speaker 1: like you said, that first win's going to come. We
- 51:12Speaker 1: know it, Joel. We believe in you that first win's
- 51:14Speaker 1: going to come. But then we go further down the
- 51:16Speaker 1: field and our other Aussie Jacob Rlstone, he had another
- 51:19Speaker 1: tough weekend P thirteen Cross the Line, Jacob. I know
- 51:24Speaker 1: he's coming back from that serious injury that he had
- 51:26Speaker 1: in the off season, but what's it going to take
- 51:29Speaker 1: for him to get closer to the front because okay, yeah,
- 51:31Speaker 1: his teammate was tenth, so three places ahead, but the
- 51:36Speaker 1: Red Bulls, like last year, these guys were closer to the.
- 51:39Speaker 2: Front, right, Yeah, definitely. I mean I still think there's
- 51:42Speaker 2: a degree of him being a bit undercooked. I mean,
- 51:44Speaker 2: when you come back from the accident that he'd had,
- 51:46Speaker 2: he missed all the preseason, he missed those first few rounds.
- 51:48Speaker 2: He's kind of at about round two mode right now,
- 51:51Speaker 2: not round six. So I think if we're still seeing
- 51:55Speaker 2: these results by mid season and a bit longer once
- 51:57Speaker 2: he's got his race fitness back and everything's back to normal,
- 52:01Speaker 2: and that's probably a little bit more concerning, But I
- 52:03Speaker 2: do think he is going to get better. There is
- 52:05Speaker 2: a degree of russ And the Moto three is just brutal, right,
- 52:08Speaker 2: Like it's so so cutthroat, and if you're that little
- 52:12Speaker 2: bit off in that pack with all these guys on
- 52:14Speaker 2: fairly equal bikes and they're all young and crazy and fearless,
- 52:17Speaker 2: like you're going to be taking advantage of if you're
- 52:19Speaker 2: not one hundred percent there. And I just think that's
- 52:21Speaker 2: where he's at at the moment. But yeah, I think
- 52:23Speaker 2: I'm sure he'll be just disappointed with that, But he's
- 52:25Speaker 2: kind of still playing himself back in a little bit.
- 52:27Speaker 1: I think, yeah, no, I get what you're saying. I
- 52:30Speaker 1: wish we were seeing more ossies closer to the run,
- 52:32Speaker 1: but he's so exciting having kelso they're flying the flag
- 52:35Speaker 1: for us at the moment. So that pretty much rounds
- 52:37Speaker 1: out Motor GP motor to a Moto three before they
- 52:40Speaker 1: head to Silverstone. But then let's go back to Moto
- 52:43Speaker 1: GP really quickly because Fabio Cordoraro has been handed a
- 52:46Speaker 1: penalty for Silverstone FP one where he has to sit
- 52:50Speaker 1: out the first ten minutes and pay a two thousand
- 52:53Speaker 1: euro fine for aggression. I'm going to say aggression towards
- 52:57Speaker 1: the marshals and not complying with them during his Moto
- 53:00Speaker 1: GP crash. Yeah, tell me the last time detention has
- 53:05Speaker 1: been handed to at GP rider.
- 53:07Speaker 2: When I read that as well, it's like you have
- 53:09Speaker 2: to sit in the naughty corner with your hands in
- 53:10Speaker 2: your head for ten minutes or something. It's a bizarre one, isn't.
- 53:13Speaker 2: It's like, we know you'd like to go ride your bike,
- 53:15Speaker 2: so we're taking all your toys away from you so
- 53:17Speaker 2: you can't. It's a bizarre punishment because two thousand euro
- 53:20Speaker 2: for a motor GP writer. That's kind of tip money.
- 53:23Speaker 2: That's not that exciting. But yeah, the fact that we're
- 53:25Speaker 2: not letting you ride your bike for ten minutes because
- 53:27Speaker 2: you've been misbehaving. But if anyone's seen the video, I
- 53:31Speaker 2: think there needed to be something because he was clearly
- 53:33Speaker 2: trying to drag a broken bike back onto the track
- 53:35Speaker 2: and keep riding it. The bike was gone at that point,
- 53:38Speaker 2: the race was over. He was not following the instructions
- 53:41Speaker 2: of the marshalls. There's a safety respect danger element to that, yes,
- 53:45Speaker 2: And I can understand that he was worked up and
- 53:47Speaker 2: he was at home and he was frustrated and all
- 53:49Speaker 2: of that. But I think once the red mist calms
- 53:53Speaker 2: down a little bit, I think you'll probably regret that one.
- 53:56Speaker 2: It's understandable in the moment, but it's probably one he
- 53:59Speaker 2: will live to regret. Yeah, strange punishment, not one that
- 54:01Speaker 2: I was not one that I'm particularly familiar with, I
- 54:04Speaker 2: must say, But it's kind of weird that you have
- 54:06Speaker 2: this five second moment of rage and then two weeks
- 54:08Speaker 2: later you have to go sit out and watch all
- 54:11Speaker 2: your colleagues right around for a bit. But of course,
- 54:13Speaker 2: the other penalty that came out after the race just
- 54:15Speaker 2: for anyone playing long lap penalty. Bingo here at home
- 54:18Speaker 2: and they have ash and he's got another long lap
- 54:20Speaker 2: penalty because he skittled Pecobanyaya, and he served two long
- 54:23Speaker 2: laps for changing his bike before the start of the race.
- 54:26Speaker 2: He did another two long laps for speeding in the
- 54:28Speaker 2: pit lane, so he'll be up to five thousand long
- 54:32Speaker 2: lap penalties or something by the time we get to Silverston,
- 54:35Speaker 2: so he'll almost do another full race distance just by
- 54:37Speaker 2: going through the long lap penalty loop. I think I.
- 54:40Speaker 1: Can't wait for Silverstone. It's going to be interesting, especially
- 54:42Speaker 1: after this weekend, just to see what happens and who
- 54:46Speaker 1: comes out on top. But we've only got two weeks
- 54:48Speaker 1: to wait for the next Moto GP. In the meantime,
- 54:50Speaker 1: F one is back on this weekend, Matt, you'll be
- 54:53Speaker 1: covering that one with our colleague Michael Lamonado, who you
