- 0:00Speaker 1: Break the news this morning, New Year's Eve celebrations turning
- 0:03Speaker 1: into tragedy. Police say dozens of people are presumed dead
- 0:07Speaker 1: and around one hundred others injured after a fire broke
- 0:09Speaker 1: out during a New Year's party at a Swiss ski resort.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Now this on your screen. This was the scene outside
- 0:15Speaker 1: as the blaze ripped through a crowded bar in Crown Montana,
- 0:18Speaker 1: one of Switzerland's most exclusive destinations. And this morning we're
- 0:22Speaker 1: learning what witnesses say caused that fire our furn this
- 0:25Speaker 1: let's called live now A skin and correspondent Naaasher in London, Nada.
- 0:29Speaker 1: What's the latest on this really sad story here.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Look, Danny, we've heard updates from officials and police as
- 0:36Speaker 2: well as investigators looking at this tragic and devastating incident.
- 0:40Speaker 2: As you mentioned, dozens are presumed to be dead. At
- 0:43Speaker 2: least one hundred are set to have been injured in
- 0:46Speaker 2: this fire, which took place at a bar at a
- 0:48Speaker 2: ski resort as many would have been celebrating New Years. Now.
- 0:52Speaker 2: According to officials, that fire broke out at around one
- 0:55Speaker 2: thirty am local time. We've been hearing from witnesses saying
- 0:58Speaker 2: that they heard and losion following the spread of that fire.
- 1:03Speaker 2: And you can imagine the distress of many who had
- 1:06Speaker 2: been celebrating New Years as that fire broke out. And
- 1:09Speaker 2: we have heard some accounts from two witnesses who spoke
- 1:14Speaker 2: to see in an affiliate BFM TV, who have said,
- 1:18Speaker 2: according to them in quotes, there were waitresses carrying champagne
- 1:22Speaker 2: bottles with sparklers on them and they carried them close
- 1:25Speaker 2: to the ceiling, which caused it to catch fire. Another
- 1:28Speaker 2: witness said one waitress was standing on another waiter's shoulders
- 1:31Speaker 2: and the bottle on the flames were just a few
- 1:34Speaker 2: centimeters away from the ceiling. Now important to note that
- 1:38Speaker 2: officials have said they have not confirmed the cause of
- 1:41Speaker 2: the fire just yet, that it is still very much
- 1:43Speaker 2: early in the investigation process, and investigators experts are waiting
- 1:48Speaker 2: for the venue to be secured before they can carry
- 1:50Speaker 2: out a full scale investigation. And as you can imagine,
- 1:54Speaker 2: the priority now for many officials, and of course the
- 1:57Speaker 2: emergency services will be tending to and of course the
- 2:00Speaker 2: family members and loved ones of those who are killed
- 2:03Speaker 2: in the fire.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Oh Man, such a terrible way to start the year.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Art Nabasher, thank you so much for that report appreciate it.
- 2:10Speaker 3: The local police chief provided an update a few hours ago.
- 2:18Speaker 4: At the time I am speaking to you, all of
- 2:20Speaker 4: the injured have been taken care of. We have counted
- 2:23Speaker 4: around one hundred injured people, most of them seriously and unfortunately,
- 2:28Speaker 4: several dozen individuals are presumed dead. At present. The main
- 2:32Speaker 4: street of Krons is closed for the needs of the investigation.
- 2:36Speaker 3: The British Embassy in Switzerland says citizens of multiple countries
- 2:40Speaker 3: are likely impacted by the disaster of the Krantz Montana resort,
- 2:44Speaker 3: very popular with foreign tourists. Martin Moy is a reporter
- 2:50Speaker 3: for Blick, Swiss German language daily newspaper, and he joins
- 2:54Speaker 3: me straight from Kanz Montana. Martin, I know that you've
- 2:57Speaker 3: been on the scene for a very long time. Now,
- 2:59Speaker 3: just give me a sense of what's going on right now.
- 3:02Speaker 3: What's the latest in the investigation. How are the police
- 3:05Speaker 3: moving forward.
- 3:09Speaker 5: We don't know exactly what's going on concerning the investigations,
- 3:13Speaker 5: and what we know is that the coroner arrived about
- 3:17Speaker 5: an hour ago. And yeah, we assume that they are
- 3:22Speaker 5: transporting the bodies away now, but the area is cornered
- 3:29Speaker 5: still and so we can get any closer to see
- 3:32Speaker 5: what's happening, and we have no further information from the authorities,
- 3:37Speaker 5: So we still know that we have several dozens death
- 3:42Speaker 5: and about one hundred injured people.
- 3:45Speaker 6: But there's no more information at this moment.
- 3:48Speaker 3: How far away, because I see that you're on the
- 3:50Speaker 3: street which seems to be cordin off. How far away
- 3:53Speaker 3: are you from the actual scene of where this happened.
- 3:56Speaker 3: And what's like in the town now after this strategy?
- 4:00Speaker 5: Yeah, you can see the scene behind me is about
- 4:04Speaker 5: two hundred meters direct in my back, but everything is
- 4:10Speaker 5: covered with plastics so you can take images or so
- 4:14Speaker 5: everything is closed. All the grocery shop next to the
- 4:20Speaker 5: scene is closed, and then you cannot pass. You have
- 4:24Speaker 5: even problems to pass when you have an apartment in
- 4:27Speaker 5: the corner area. So police is very strict that nobody
- 4:30Speaker 5: gets closer to the bar where the fire was.
- 4:35Speaker 6: The town is going on.
- 4:39Speaker 5: I have to say, we have a lot a lot
- 4:41Speaker 5: of tourists here because of the holidays, and so we
- 4:45Speaker 5: have people passing by going to at the end in
- 4:48Speaker 5: the morning, they went to the slopes and enjoying the time.
- 4:51Speaker 6: So we have two worlds in one place.
- 4:55Speaker 5: One very tragic world where we had the fire, and
- 4:59Speaker 5: then other one.
- 5:00Speaker 6: The touristic world, which where life is going on.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Yeah, and you said it's a very popular tourist resort.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Obviously right now in the winter season and especially on
- 5:08Speaker 3: New Year's Eve, a lot of tourists will have been there.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Is that who they fear most of the victims are
- 5:13Speaker 3: that most of the people there who were killed, who
- 5:15Speaker 3: were injured, are potentially tourists from Europe and other places.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Yeah, that seems to be possible, but they in fact
- 5:25Speaker 5: they don't know, because it can they can be locals too,
- 5:28Speaker 5: but it's likely that they are also tourists killed. We
- 5:35Speaker 5: know that two of them are French people, but other
- 5:40Speaker 5: identities were not given or to this moment.
- 5:44Speaker 3: I know Martin that you are a reporter who has
- 5:47Speaker 3: almost more experience than anybody else with this region and
- 5:51Speaker 3: Conspontane is a very small village. But we also know
- 5:54Speaker 3: that the Swiss have an exceptional system of getting a
- 5:57Speaker 3: getting help to people. They have helicopter rescue ambulances. How
- 6:01Speaker 3: big of an operation is that to try and save people,
- 6:04Speaker 3: and how many assets are there from around the country
- 6:07Speaker 3: trying to work this very difficult situation.
- 6:11Speaker 6: Yeah, it was a huge operation.
- 6:13Speaker 5: We had about ten helicopters transferring the dangers to several
- 6:19Speaker 5: hospitals in the region, but also to Geneva and to
- 6:21Speaker 5: Zurich where there are specialized clinics for victims of fire.
- 6:28Speaker 6: Then we had about forty ambulances.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Who were here and about two hundred people from the services,
- 6:37Speaker 5: from the emergency services helping and doing their best to
- 6:40Speaker 5: get all the people to the hospitals, to the doctors.
- 6:45Speaker 5: And so it was a huge operation and the region
- 6:48Speaker 5: valley could not handle it by its own, so they
- 6:50Speaker 5: had to ask for help from in other cantons in
- 6:53Speaker 5: Switzerland and they arrived immediately to help hereos And.
- 6:57Speaker 3: The final question before I let you, because I know
- 6:59Speaker 3: that you're extremely busy on this on this tragic day.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Switzerland is obviously a country that has very strict laws
- 7:06Speaker 3: as far as fire safety is concerned, also as far
- 7:08Speaker 3: as the safety of bigger events is concerned. Is there
- 7:11Speaker 3: anything to indicate how this could have happened? I mean,
- 7:14Speaker 3: we know that it could be these sparkler candles, but
- 7:17Speaker 3: also is there anything in the setting and the fact
- 7:19Speaker 3: that this was inside a basement room apparently where people
- 7:23Speaker 3: whether the authorities have an indicator as to how this
- 7:26Speaker 3: could happen.
- 7:30Speaker 5: No, they the only thing they said that they that
- 7:33Speaker 5: there was no attack on the bar, But everything else
- 7:37Speaker 5: is a speculation.
- 7:39Speaker 6: They don't know what exactly happened.
- 7:41Speaker 5: They speak of a blast of a fire blust, but
- 7:44Speaker 5: what provoked this blust is not clear. It could be
- 7:49Speaker 5: this sport us, but it could be also something in
- 7:52Speaker 5: the kitchen.
- 7:52Speaker 6: We don't know at the moment.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Martin Moyle in Cans, Montana, thank you very much for
- 7:58Speaker 3: joining us, and folks, we're gonna have much more on
- 8:00Speaker 3: this breaking news story out of Switzerland as the day progresses.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Obviously there's still a lot of new information that's coming in.
- 8:07Speaker 3: We're going to bring that to you when it comes in.
- 8:09Speaker 3: We'll also have special program for that incident as well.
- 8:12Speaker 3: A huge incident that happened there in Switzerland.
