Latest / Moming and Me: The Podcast / Understanding Isn’t Agreement

- Najah: I've been thinking. Think we've gotten so afraid of being misunderstood. That we stop trying to understand each other. And somewhere along the way We started acting like understanding someone means agreeing with them. It doesn't. See I can understand why someone thinks the way that they do without thinking that they're right. I can also understand that their experiences shaped their perspective. Without making it my own. Because understanding isn't surrender. It isn't approval. And it's not permission. It's simply curiosity. And curiosity has taught me more about people than judgment ever has. I've learned that the goal of every conversation doesn't have to be changing someone's mind. Sometimes the goal is simply understanding how they arrived at theirs. I think we'd have a lot less arguing. And a lot more learning. If we stop treating understanding betrayal. Some people will hear you out just so they can respond. I'd rather hear you out so I can understand. Those are two very different conversations.
