- 0:00Jonathan: Hello, Dork Squad.
- 0:02Jonathan: I'm Jonathan Cormur, and you're listening to Dork Tales Storytime, the podcast for kids and their pop culture loving grown-ups.
- 0:14Theme Song: It's a beautiful day for a story, an adventure, and glory.
- 0:18Theme Song: New friends and old ones, too.
- 0:21Theme Song: It's an excellent day to get swept away in a tale, so let us regale you.
- 0:43Jonathan: Hey Reg, how's it going?
- 0:45Redge: Well, hello, Jonathan.
- 0:47Redge: It's going marvelously.
- 0:49Redge: Thank you for asking.
- 0:55Jonathan: You seem like you're in a good mood.
- 0:58Redge: Well I am.
- 0:59Redge: Listen.
- 1:06Jonathan: Where did that come from?
- 1:08Redge: Do you mean my fabulous magical flute?
- 1:12Jonathan: Yes.
- 1:13Redge: Well I always have my fabulous flute, Jonathan.
- 1:17Jonathan: You do?
- 1:18Redge: Well no, I just got it a few weeks ago.
- 1:21Redge: But I was just given an honorable mention award in Lit ropia's fabulous flautist competition.
- 1:30Jonathan: Hey, that's awesome.
- 1:32Redge: I know.
- 1:33Redge: The competition today was fierce.
- 1:36Jonathan: Oh yeah?
- 1:37Jonathan: Who was there?
- 1:39Redge: Oh do I have a story for you about this competition?
- 1:44Jonathan: You have a story for me today?
- 1:46Jonathan: That's exciting.
- 1:48Redge: Isn't it just so exciting?
- 1:51Redge: And it involves one of your favorite things.
- 1:54Jonathan: Oh?
- 1:55Redge: Mythology!
- 1:57Jonathan: That is one of my favorite things.
- 2:00Redge: It's important to set the scene with a little dive into the past.
- 2:05Jonathan: I'm ready.
- 2:07Redge: Well, a long, long time ago, like thousands and thousands of years ago, there was a great god named Zeus, who lived at the very top of a mountain called Mount Olympus.
- 2:22Redge: Have you heard of him?
- 2:24Jonathan: The king of the gods?
- 2:26Jonathan: The one that likes to create lightning and thunder?
- 2:30Redge: That's him, precisely.
- 2:32Redge: Well, one day
- 2:34Zeus: Oh, I've got such a headache.
- 2:38Jonathan: The king of the gods got a headache?
- 2:40Redge: It wasn't just a headache.
- 2:42Redge: Inside his head was his daughter, and she was ready to be born.
- 2:48Jonathan: All right, I forgot about this.
- 2:51Redge: It's not logical, but we'll just go along with it.
- 2:55Jonathan: Aye aye, Captain
- 2:57Redge: So Zeus has an idea.
- 3:00Zeus: Hephaestus, I'm going to need to hire you to split my head open.
- 3:05Hephaestus: You want me to do what to the king of the gods?
- 3:08Hephaestus: I could never.
- 3:10Zeus: I'm asking you to do it.
- 3:12Zeus: Now trust me and split my head open.
- 3:16Hephaestus: Okay, whatever you say, boss.
- 3:19Jonathan: Oh, I know what happens.
- 3:20Jonathan: Hephaestus reluctantly grabbed the sharpest axe he could find and split Zeus's head open.
- 3:27Redge: That's right.
- 3:28Redge: And out popped the goddess of wisdom, war, and crafts.
- 3:34Athena: Hey Dad, nice to meet you.
- 3:36Athena: I'm Athena.
- 3:38Redge: Now, despite the whole headache thing, Zeus loved Athena.
- 3:44Jonathan: What wasn't there to love?
- 3:45Jonathan: She guided heroes on their adventures, planted olive trees in the ground using just a spear.
- 3:52Jonathan: She could weave like no one has ever woven before.
- 3:56Redge: And she invented this
- 3:59Jonathan: The Flute?
- 4:00Redge: Yes, siree, Bob.
- 4:02Jonathan: The flute I didn't know that.
- 4:05Jonathan: That's really cool.
- 4:07Redge: Now, as you know, Athena didn't grow up on Mount Olympus.
- 4:13Jonathan: She didn't?
- 4:15Redge: Well of course not.
- 4:16Redge: She lives on an island near Legend Lake, made up of glaciers, ice, and snow.
- 4:22Redge: Legends say it's called Winter Wonder Island.
- 4:27Jonathan: There's a winter island near Legend Lake?
- 4:31Jonathan: How?
- 4:32Redge: According to tales.
- 4:34Redge: You know that Legend Lake is full of mysterious mysteries.
- 4:38Jonathan: Have you been there?
- 4:40Redge: Well, I hear it's very cold.
- 4:42Redge: And like most things in Legend Lake, it's impossible to find.
- 4:46Redge: But anyway, let me tell you how she got there.
- 4:50Jonathan: Oh I would love to know.
- 4:52Redge: So on Winter Wonder Island there was an emperor penguin named Triton.
- 4:57Zeus: Hey, Triton, love the tux.
- 5:00Triton: Oh thanks, Zeus.
- 5:01Triton: I just had it preened.
- 5:04Zeus: It looks really spiffy.
- 5:05Zeus: Listen, I need you to do me a favor.
- 5:08Triton: Your wish is my command.
- 5:10Zeus: Can you look after my daughter Athena?
- 5:12Zeus: She's my favorite kid and will one day become one of the most important gods of all time.
- 5:18Zeus: If you screw this up, I'll have you banished to Hades.
- 5:22Zeus: But you know, no pressure.
- 5:25Triton: Gee.
- 5:26Triton: Okay, I think I can do that.
- 5:28Triton: My daughter Pallas has always wanted a sister.
- 5:31Zeus: Thanks, Triton.
- 5:33Redge: So Athena moved to Winter Wonder Island to live with Triton and his daughter Pallas.
- 5:39Jonathan: That must have been really hard for her.
- 5:42Redge: True.
- 5:42Redge: Must have been hard to leave Mount Olympus, the only world she had ever known.
- 5:47Redge: But Triton was a really nice penguin, and so was his daughter Pallas.
- 5:52Redge: Pallas taught Athena how to do all sorts of penguin things, like how to catch fish.
- 5:59Pallas: Okay, hold my wing.
- 6:01Pallas: We're gonna jump off this ice cliff together, then dive down deep into the ocean to catch a fish for dinner.
- 6:07Pallas: You ready?
- 6:09Athena: Do I hold my breath?
- 6:13Pallas: Can you breathe underwater?
- 6:15Athena: Guess we'll find out.
- 6:20Redge: And how to slide across ice on their bellies.
- 6:23Pallas: Whee! Isn't this fun?
- 6:26Athena: Is it possible to get brain freeze on your belly?
- 6:29Redge: Pretty soon, Pallas and Athena were more than sisters.
- 6:32Redge: They were besties.
- 6:35Jonathan: Aww.
- 6:35Jonathan: Just like us, Redge.
- 6:37Redge: Yes, just like us.
- 6:39Redge: And in exchange for all of the wonderful things Pallas taught her, Athena whittled a flute out of unmeltable ice and taught her how to play it.
- 6:49Pallas: That's so kind of you.
- 6:51Pallas: Thanks, Athena.
- 6:52Athena: Of course, try it out.
- 7:06Redge: Well, we can't all be as good at the flute in the beginning like I am.
- 7:10Redge: But practice makes perfect.
- 7:12Redge: So Athena and Pallas spent their days doing just that, to the point where Pallas was pretty much just as good at the flute as Athena.
- 7:21Redge: The inventor of the flute.
- 7:24Jonathan: Well, that's gotta be pretty good.
- 7:26Redge: Absolutely.
- 7:27Redge: Apparently, if you're living in Legend Lake and you open your window, you can hear the sounds of their flute duets floating over the water.
- 7:37Jonathan: Wow, that's beautiful.
- 7:39Redge: Ah yes, beautiful.
- 7:42Jonathan: Oh wait, Litropia's Fabulous Flautist competition.
- 7:46Redge: What about it?
- 7:48Jonathan: Well, isn't that where your story was going?
- 7:51Redge: Oh right Wow, storytelling takes a lot of concentration.
- 7:57Jonathan: Don't I know it?
- 7:58Redge: Now let us speed to the not so distant past.
- 8:01Redge: Just a few weeks ago, in fact, when Mayor Martindale Nightingale made an announcement.
- 8:08Mayor Martindale Nightingale: Hear ye, hear ye.
- 8:10Mayor Martindale Nightingale: In just a few short weeks, we shall host the Litropia's very first fabulous flautist competition.
- 8:19Redge: Mayor Martindale is a huge fan of music, you know, given that he's a nightingale.
- 8:24Jonathan: Yeah, makes sense.
- 8:25Mayor Martindale Nightingale: Whoever wins shall be given the key to the city.
- 8:32Redge: Now I didn't know what it would mean to have the key to the city, but it sounded so important.
- 8:38Redge: And you know I love a little competition, so of course I had to sign up.
- 8:45Jonathan: Even though you had never played.
- 8:48Redge: That's never stopped me before.
- 8:49Redge: I bought a flute at Windy the Whale's Wind Instrument shop, and I got to fluting.
- 9:04Jonathan: Ah, okay, all right.
- 9:06Jonathan: Thanks for the example, Redge.
- 9:08Redge: You're welcome.
- 9:09Redge: Word made its way to Winter Wonder Island, and who else do you think decided to sign up for the competition?
- 9:17Jonathan: Athena and Pallas.
- 9:19Redge: Correct.
- 9:20Redge: But the trouble was everything they did they did together.
- 9:24Redge: They always supported one another.
- 9:27Redge: Their friendship was never about winning or competition.
- 9:31Athena: Let's make a promise.
- 9:33Athena: No matter who wins, we'll be happy for the other.
- 9:36Pallas: I promise.
- 9:38Athena: I promise too.
- 9:40Redge: They both practiced and practiced, sometimes giving one another notes and always cheering each other on.
- 9:47Jonathan: Aw, that's so sweet.
- 9:50Redge: Then came yesterday, the day of the Litropia's fabulous flautist competition.
- 9:56Redge: Athena, Pallas, and Triton made their way to the God of Dance Theatre, where the competition was being held.
- 10:04Redge: And when they opened the doors, who do you think they saw?
- 10:10Jonathan: Uh you?
- 10:11Redge: Well, yes, I was there, but that's not who I'm talking about.
- 10:15Redge: They saw Zeus.
- 10:18Jonathan: He was at the competition?
- 10:20Jonathan: The king of the gods was here yesterday?
- 10:24Redge: Yes.
- 10:24Redge: Somehow wood made its way to Mount Olympus, and Zeus was not going to pass up the chance to see Athena compete.
- 10:33Athena: Dad, why are you here?
- 10:35Zeus: Can't a father take his time out of his busy schedule to see his most favoritist daughter beat the pants off of these other noobs.
- 10:46Athena: Uh, Dad.
- 10:47Athena: Thank you for coming, but please don't embarrass me.
- 10:53Zeus: No one will even notice I'm here.
- 10:56Athena: You're like a thousand feet tall.
- 10:58Athena: And whenever you move your hands, lightning strikes out of them.
- 11:03Zeus: All right, they'll know.
- 11:04Zeus: But I'll be quiet.
- 11:05Zeus: I promise.
- 11:07Zeus: I love you, my favorite little headache.
- 11:12Athena: I love you too.
- 11:14Zeus: Zeus fully expected Athena to win, given that she was, you know, the inventor of the flute.
- 11:20Zeus: And let's be honest, everyone else thought that too.
- 11:23Zeus: Though I did think I could give her a run for her money.
- 11:28Jonathan: Yeah, naturally.
- 11:30Redge: First I went, and I did fabulously.
- 11:34Redge: I played my own rendition of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and the crowd loved it.
- 11:41Jonathan: Oh, that's awesome, Redge.
- 11:43Redge: Then, contestant after contestant took their turn on stage.
- 11:48Redge: There were some very talented flautists.
- 11:51Redge: Who knew there were so many in the Litropia?
- 11:54Jonathan: Well, certainly not me.
- 11:56Redge: But Zeus knew none of them were as good as his daughter.
- 11:59Redge: So he sat quietly as he promised her, and even fell asleep through a few of them.
- 12:05Redge: Then Athena took the stage, and she was fantastic.
- 12:19Redge: I had never heard the flute played like that before.
- 12:23Redge: She had the whole crowd clapping along with her, and Zeus enjoyed it most of all, sending sparks of lightning every time he clapped.
- 12:33Redge: Her song ended, and she took a big bow, then got a standing ovation, and of course, supporting her in the front row were Triton and Pallas.
- 12:46Jonathan: Just like they promised.
- 12:48Redge: Then, last but not least, Pallas walked on to the stage.
- 12:53Redge: You can tell she was nervous, having to follow an act like Athena, but she knew she could do anything with the support of her best friend.
- 13:02Redge: She took a deep breath, put the flute to her beak, and started to play.
- 13:07Redge: Some even started to cry.
- 13:24Redge: It was so beautiful.
- 13:27Jonathan: Are you crying now, Redge?
- 13:31Redge: Only a little.
- 13:32Redge: It was just so touching.
- 13:36Jonathan: It's wonderful what music can do.
- 13:39Redge: Truly.
- 13:40Redge: But there was someone who wasn't as touched.
- 13:43Jonathan: Who?
- 13:45Redge: Zeus.
- 13:45Redge: Everyone in the Litropia knew that Pallas was an extraordinary talent, but Zeus did not.
- 13:52Redge: It was shocking to him that someone could beat his favorite child.
- 13:57Redge: He was not going to have any of it.
- 13:59Jonathan: Uh oh.
- 14:01Redge: He angled his shield so that it bounced off the light coming from the spotlight, momentarily blinding Pallas.
- 14:08Redge: The light was so bright that she threw the flute up in the air and it landed in the audience right on Mayor Martindale Nightingale's head.
- 14:17Mayor Martindale Nightingale: Oh oi, I have got such a headache.
- 14:20Redge: Pallas was so embarrassed that she ran off the stage and out of the theatre, leaving her flute and the whole competition behind.
- 14:29Athena: Pallas, wait.
- 14:31Redge: Athena tried to stop her, but it was too late.
- 14:33Redge: Pallas was already out the door, making her way back to Legend Lake.
- 14:38Redge: Before Athena could follow her, Zeus flew over to stop her.
- 14:42Zeus: Daughter, where are you going?
- 14:44Zeus: They haven't announced the winner yet.
- 14:46Athena: Did you have something to do with this?
- 14:49Zeus: Do with what?
- 14:50Zeus: The weather creating all of mankind creating you
- 14:55Athena: You know what I'm talking about.
- 14:57Athena: Did you mess up Pallas' performance?
- 15:00Zeus: Me?
- 15:01Zeus: Never.
- 15:02Zeus: I'm the king of the gods.
- 15:04Zeus: I'm perfect.
- 15:06Redge: As you may remember, Jonathan, all the gods were imperfect, even Zeus.
- 15:13Athena: Dad?
- 15:15Zeus: Fine.
- 15:16Zeus: Yes it was me.
- 15:17Zeus: But she was about to win.
- 15:19Zeus: I couldn't have someone else beat my most favoritist daughter.
- 15:24Zeus: That would be embarrassing.
- 15:27Athena: Dad, Triton and Pallas took me in.
- 15:29Athena: They raised me and loved me.
- 15:32Athena: Pallas has taught me so much.
- 15:34Athena: She's my best friend, and you've embarrassed her in front of all of Litropia.
- 15:40Zeus: Well, when you put it like that.
- 15:43Athena: You owe her an apology.
- 15:46Zeus: Fine.
- 15:46Zeus: But where did she run off to?
- 15:49Triton: Well, she may have already taken a Litropia taxicab to the road, taken a magical carriage to the third turn on the left, and reached the border of Legend Lake.
- 15:59Triton: Uh your Highness.
- 16:01Zeus: Triton, she wait, how did she go so fast?
- 16:06Triton: Once Upon A Time is very magical.
- 16:08Zeus: I'll say.
- 16:10Athena: Dad
- 16:11Zeus: Oh right.
- 16:12Zeus: Uh we should go to her.
- 16:13Zeus: Zeus lifted Athena and Triton, and in a flash they caught up with Pallas, who was swimming her way back to Winter Wonder Island.
- 16:22Athena: Pallas, come back.
- 16:25Pallas: No thanks.
- 16:25Pallas: I'm too ashamed to show myself again.
- 16:28Zeus: Dad.
- 16:29Zeus: On it, sweetie.
- 16:32Redge: Naturally, Zeus can control everything on the planet.
- 16:35Redge: So we alter the currents of the lake to bring Pallas back to shore.
- 16:40Pallas: That's really not nice of you, Mr.
- 16:41Pallas: Zeus.
- 16:42Zeus: I know.
- 16:43Zeus: I haven't been very nice lately.
- 16:45Zeus: But to be fair, that's not my forte.
- 16:49Zeus: Um Pallas, I must apologize.
- 16:54Zeus: I was the one that blinded you while you were on stage.
- 16:58Pallas: Why would you do that?
- 17:01Zeus: It's difficult for a father to see his daughter lose in front of all of the Litropia, especially considering my status.
- 17:08Zeus: Still, I should have never done that to you.
- 17:11Zeus: You and your father have done so much for me in raising Athena, and I can tell she's turned out to be a very decent hearted goddess because of you.
- 17:21Triton: Oh, thank you, your Majesty.
- 17:24Pallas: Yeah, thanks.
- 17:25Pallas: And I understand.
- 17:28Athena: Now, will you come back with us to the theater?
- 17:30Athena: They're going to announce the winner soon.
- 17:32Pallas: Well, okay, I can do that.
- 17:35Redge: Zeus scooped them all up and made it back just in time to watch me be given my honorable mention certificate.
- 17:43Jonathan: Thank goodness.
- 17:45Redge: Right?
- 17:45Redge: Good thing Zeus is so magical and could travel fast.
- 17:49Redge: It was a wonderful night.
- 17:54Jonathan: So is that the end of the story?
- 17:58Redge: Oh yes, well, then it was time for the top three finalists.
- 18:02Redge: In third place was
- 18:04Mayor Martindale Nightingale: Wendy the Whale.
- 18:17Redge: Then second place was
- 18:19Mayor Martindale Nightingale: the Goddess Athena.
- 18:32Redge: Pallas gave Athena a huge hug.
- 18:35Redge: Triton gave her a fatherly pat on the back, and Zeus roared a loud, thunderous roar as Athena went on stage to accept her trophy.
- 18:46Mayor Martindale Nightingale: And the winner of this year's fabulous flautist competition is Pallas!
- 19:01Redge: The whole crowd went wild! Tears filled Pallas' eyes.
- 19:07Redge: She could hardly believe it, but Athena knew she could do it all along.
- 19:12Redge: Hey.
- 19:13Redge: Are you crying, Jonathan?
- 19:18Jonathan: Well, it's just so touching.
- 19:20Jonathan: It's a beautiful story about friends supporting one another.
- 19:26Redge: Yes, you you are just so right.
- 19:29Redge: So, uh did I do a good job telling the story?
- 19:34Jonathan: An excellent job.
- 19:36Redge: Woohoo! Celebration flute
- 19:40Jonathan: Ah yes.
- 19:41Jonathan: That's so That's so Beautiful.
- 19:59Redge: Yes, quite.
- 20:00Redge: Now we should find Legend Lake again.
- 20:02Redge: I would love to hear Athena and Pallas playing while sitting by the water.
- 20:06Redge: And maybe I can get a few pointers on my fluting.
- 20:10Jonathan: Sounds like a perfect adventure to me.
- 20:12Redge: Huzzah! To Winter Wonder Island we go!
- 20:18Jonathan: This has been a Jon in Character production.
