- 0:00Book nine, Part one, the argument Man's transgression known. The Guardian Angels
- 0:09for Sat paradise and return up to Heaven to approve their vigilance, and are
- 0:14approved. God, declaring that the entrance of Satan could not be by them
- 0:19prevented, he sends his son to judge the transgressors, who descends and give
- 0:24sentence accordingly. Then, in pity, clothes them both and reascends sin and
- 0:30death, sitting till then at the gates of Hell by wondrous sympathy, feeling
- 0:35the success of Satan in this new world and the sin by man there committed,
- 0:40resolved to sit no longer confined in Hell, but to follow Satan,
- 0:45their sire, up to the place of Man. To make the way easier
- 0:49from Hell to this world, to and fro, they pave a broad highway
- 0:53or bridge over chaos, according to the trap that Satan first made. Then,
- 0:59preparing for Earth, they meet him, proud of his success, returning
- 1:03to Hell their mutual gratulation. Satan arrives at Pandemonium in full assembly, relates
- 1:10with boasting his success against man. Instead of applause, is entertained with a
- 1:15general hiss by all his audience transformed with himself also suddenly into serpents, according
- 1:23to his doom given in paradise. Then deluded with a shower of the forbidden
- 1:27tree springing up before them, they greedily reaching to take of the fruit,
- 1:33chee dust and bitter ashes. Meanwhile, the heinous and despiteful act of Satan
- 1:40done in Paradise, and how he and the serpent had perverted Eve her husband
- 1:46she to taste the fatal fruit was known in heaven. For what can scape
- 1:51the eye of God all seeing, or deceive his heart omniscient, who,
- 1:55in all things wise and just hindered not Satan to attempt the mind of man
- 2:00with strength, in tire and free, well armed, complete to have discovered
- 2:05and repulsed whatever whiles of foe or seeming friend. For still they knew,
- 2:10and ought to have still remembered the high injunction not to taste that fruit.
- 2:15Whoever tempted, which they, not obeying incurred. What could they less the
- 2:21penalty and manifolding sin deserved to fall up into Heaven from paradise in haste a
- 2:28angelic guards ascended, mute and sad for man, for of his state.
- 2:32By this they knew, much, wondering how the subtle fiend had stolen entrance
- 2:37unseen. Soon as the unwelcome news from Earth arrived at heaven gate, Displeased
- 2:43all were who heard. Dim sadness did not spare that time. Celestial visages,
- 2:49yet mixed with pity, violated not their bliss about the new arrived in
- 2:54multitudes. The ethereal people ran to hear and know how all thefell They towards
- 3:00the throne Supreme Accountable made haste to make appear with righteous plea their utmost vigilance,
- 3:07and easily approved when the most High Eternal Father, from his secret cloud,
- 3:13amidst in thunder uttered, Thus his voice assembled angels and ye powers returned
- 3:19from unsuccessful charge. Be not dismayed nor troubled at these tidings from Earth,
- 3:24which your sincerest care could not prevent. Foretold so lately, what would come
- 3:30to pass when first this tempter crossed the gulf from Hell? I told you,
- 3:35then he should prevail and speed on his bad errand man should be seduced
- 3:39and flattered out of all believing lies against his maker. No decree of mind
- 3:45concurring to necessitate his fall or touch with the lightest moment of impulse his free
- 3:51will to her own inclining left in even scale. But fallen he is.
- 3:57And now what rests but that the mortal sentence pass on his transgression death denounced
- 4:02that day, which he presumes already vain and void, because not yet inflicted
- 4:08as he feared, by some immediate stroke, but soon shall find forbearance no
- 4:13acquittance. Ere day end. Justice shall not return as bounty scorned. But
- 4:18whom send I to judge them? Whom but thee vice regent son to THEE.
- 4:24I have transferred all judgment, whether in heaven or earth or hell.
- 4:29Easy it may be seen that I intend mercy, colleague with justice, sending
- 4:32THEE man's friend, his mediator, his design both ransom and redeemer, voluntary
- 4:40and destined man himself to judge man fallen. So spake the Father, and
- 4:46unfolding bright towards the right hand, his glory on the sun blazed forth unclouded
- 4:51deity, he full resplendent all his father manifest expressed, and thus divinely answered
- 4:59Myles, Father, eternal Thine is to decree mine, both in heaven and
- 5:03earth, to do thy will supreme, that thou in me, thy son
- 5:08belov'd, mayst ever rest well pleas'd I go to judge on earth these thy
- 5:14transgressors. But thou knowest whoever judg'd the worst on me most light, when
- 5:18time shall be for so I undertook before THEE, and not repenting this obtain
- 5:25of right, that I may mitigate their doom on me deriv'd. Yet I
- 5:29shall temper so justice with mercy as may illustrate most them fully satisfied, and
- 5:35THEE appease attendants. None shall need nor train where none are to behold the
- 5:41judgment, but the judg'd those two. The third best absent is condemn'd,
- 5:46convict by flight, and revel to all law. Conviction to the serpent none
- 5:53belongs. Thus saying, from his radiant seat, he rose of high collateral
- 5:59g golds glory him, thrones and powers, princedoms and dominations. Ministrant accompanied
- 6:05to heaven Gate. From whence Eden and all the coast in prospect lay down,
- 6:12he descended straight. The speed of God's time counts not, though with
- 6:16the swiftest minutes winged. Now was the sun in western Cadence low from noon,
- 6:23and gentle airs due at their hour to fan the earth now waked and
- 6:28usher in the evening cool. When he from wrath more cool came the mild
- 6:33judge, and intercess he both to sentence man the voice of God they heard,
- 6:40now, walking in the garden by soft winds brought to their ears while
- 6:45day declined, they heard, and from his presence hid themselves among the thickest
- 6:48trees, both man and wife, till God approaching Thus to Adam, called
- 6:54aloud, where art thou, Adam, wont with joy to meet my coming
- 6:58scene? Far off? I miss thee here not pleased, Thus entertain'd with
- 7:02solitude where obvious duty erewhile appear'd unsought, or come I less conspicuous? Or
- 7:10what change absents thee? Or what chance detains come forth? He came,
- 7:15and with him Eve more loathe, though first to offend, discountenanced both and
- 7:20discompos'd. Love was not in their looks, either to God or to each
- 7:26other, but apparent guilt and shame, and perturbation and despair, anger and
- 7:31obstinacy, and hate and guile. Whence Adam, faltering long, thus answer'd
- 7:38brief, I heard THEE in the garden, and of thy voice, afraid,
- 7:42being naked, hid myself, to whom the gracious Judge, without revile,
- 7:46replied, my voice, Thou oftest heard, and hast not fear'd,
- 7:50but still rejoic'd. How is it now become so dreadful to THEE that thou
- 7:55art naked, who hath told thee? Hast thou eaten of the tree whereof
- 8:00I gave THEE charge? Thou shouldst not eat to whom? Thus Adam sore
- 8:05Beset replied, Oh heaven, in evil strait, this day I stand before
- 8:09my judge, either to undergo myself the total crime, or to accuse my
- 8:13other self, the partner of my life, whose failing, while her faith
- 8:18to me remains, I should conceal and not exposed to blame by my complaint.
- 8:24But strict necessity subdues me, and calamitous constraint lest on my head.
- 8:28Both sin and punishment, however insupportable, be all devolved, though should I
- 8:35hold my peace, Yet thou wouldst easily detect what I conceal. This woman,
- 8:39who thou madest to be my help and gavest me as thy perfect gift,
- 8:43so good, so fit, so acceptable, so divine, that from
- 8:48her hand I could suspect no ill and what she did, whatever in itself,
- 8:52her doings seemed to justify the deed she gave me of the tree,
- 8:58and I did eat, to whom the sovereign presence thus replied, Was she
- 9:03thy God that her thou didst obey before his voice? Or was she made
- 9:07thy guide superior or but equal that to her thou didst resign thy manhood?
- 9:13And the place wherein God set thee above her made of thee, and for
- 9:18thee, whose perfection far excelled hers in all real dignity adorned. She was
- 9:22indeed and lovely to attract thy love, not thy subjection. And her gifts
- 9:28were such as under government well seem'd unseemly to bear rule, which was thy
- 9:33part and person. Hadst thou known thyself aright? So having said he thus
- 9:39to Eve, in few say, woman, what is this which thou hast
- 9:41done to whom sad Eve, with shame thigh overwhelm'd, confessing soon yet not
- 9:48before her judge? Bold or aquacious, thus abashed, replied the serpent,
- 9:54me beguiled, and I did eat, which, when the Lord God heard,
- 9:58without delay to judgment, he proceeded on the cues. Serpent, though
- 10:01brute, unable to transfer the guilt on him who made him instrument of mischief,
- 10:07and polluted from the end of his creation, justly than accursed, as
- 10:11vitiated in nature. More to know, concerned not man, since he no
- 10:16further new nor altered his offense. Yet God at last to Satan first in
- 10:22sin, his doom applied, though in mysterious terms, judged as then best,
- 10:28and on the serpent. Thus his curse let fall. Because thou hast
- 10:31done this, Thou art a cursed above all cattle, each beast of the
- 10:35field, upon thy belly groveling, thou shalt go, and dust shalt eat
- 10:41all the days of thy life. Between thee and the woman, I will
- 10:43put enmity, and between thine and her seed. Her seed shall bruise thy
- 10:48head, Thou bruise his heel. So spake this oracle then verified when Jesus,
- 10:56son of Mary second Eve, saw Satan and fall light lightning down from
- 11:01heaven. Prince of the Air, then rising from his grave, spoiled principalities
- 11:07and powers, triumphed in open show, and with ascension bright captivity led captive
- 11:13through the air, the realm itself of Satan long usurped, whom he shall
- 11:18tread at last under our feet, Even he who now foretold his fatal bruise,
- 11:24and to the woman. Thus his sentence turned, thy sorrow, I
- 11:28will greatly multiply by thy conception children, Thou shalt bring in sorrow forth,
- 11:33and to thy husband's will thine shall submit He over thee shall rule on Adam
- 11:39last. Thus judgment he pronounced, because thou hast hearkened to the voice of
- 11:43thy wife, and eaten of the tree concerning which I charge thee, saying
- 11:48thou shalt not eat thereof cursed is the ground for thy sake. Thou,
- 11:54in sorrow shalt eat thereof all the days of thy life, thorns also thistles,
- 12:00that shall bring thee forth unbid, And thou shalt eat the herb of
- 12:03the field. In the sweat of thy face. Shalt thou eat bread till
- 12:09thou return unto the ground, For thou out of the ground wast taken,
- 12:13know thy birth, for dost thou art, and shalt to dust return.
- 12:20So judged he man, both judge and savior, sent and instant stroke of
- 12:24death denounced that day removed far off, then, pitying how they stood before
- 12:30him, naked to the air, that now must suffer change, disdain not
- 12:33to begin thenceforth the form of servant to assume, as when he wash'd his
- 12:39servant's feet. So now, as father of his family, he clad their
- 12:43nakedness with skins of beasts or slain, or as the snake with youthful coat
- 12:50repaid, and thought not much to clothe his enemies, Nor he there outward
- 12:56only with the skins of beasts, but inward nakedness much more approbrious, with
- 13:01his robe of righteousness arraying covered from his father's sight to him with swift assent,
- 13:07he up returned into his blissful bosom, reassumed in glory as of old
- 13:13to him appeased, all though all knowing what had passed with man recounted,
- 13:18mixing intercession sweet. Meanwhile, ere Thus was sinned and judged on earth within
- 13:24the gates of hell, sat sin and death in counterview, within the gates
- 13:30that now stood open wide, belching outrageous flame, far into chaos, since
- 13:35the fiend passed through sin opening, who thus now to death began O son?
- 13:41Why sit we hear each other viewing idly, while Satan, our great
- 13:46author, thrives in other worlds, and happier seat provides for us His offspring
- 13:52deer it cannot be, but that success attends him. If mishap ere this,
- 13:56he had returned with fury, driven by avengure. Since no place like
- 14:01this can fit his punishment or their revenge, methinks I feel new strength within
- 14:07me, rise, wings growing, and dominion given me large. Beyond this
- 14:11deep whatever draws me on, or sympathy, or some cannatural force powerful at
- 14:18greatest distance, to unite with secret amity things of like kind by secretist conveyance,
- 14:24Thou, my shade, inseparable, must with me along for death from
- 14:28sin. No power can separate. But lest the difficulty of passing back stay
- 14:35his return perhaps over this gulf, impassable, impervious, let us try adventurous
- 14:41work yet to thy power and mind not unagreeable to found a path over this
- 14:46main from hell to that new world where Satan now prevails a monument of merit
- 14:52high to all the infernal host, easing their passage, hence for intercourse or
- 14:58transmigration, as their lot shall lead. Nor can I miss the way so
- 15:03strongly drawn by this new felt attraction and instinct, whom thus the meager shadow
- 15:11answered, soon go with a fate and inclination strong leads thee. I shall
- 15:16not lag behind, nor e'er the way Thou leading such as scent I draw
- 15:20of carnage, pray innumerable, and taste the savor of death from all things
- 15:26there that live. Nor shall I to the work thou enterprisest be wanting,
- 15:31but afford thee equal aid. So saying with delight, he snuffed the smell
- 15:35of mortal change on earth, as when a flock of ravenous fowl, though
- 15:41many a league remote, against the day of battle, to a field where
- 15:45armies lye encamped, come flying, lured with scent of living carcasses designed for
- 15:50death. The following day in bloody fight, so scented the grim feature and
- 15:56upturned his nostril wide into the murky air, sagacious of his quarry from so
- 16:02far. Then both from out hell gates into the waste wide anarchy of chaos,
- 16:07damp and dark, flew divers, and with power. Their power was
- 16:11great. Hovering upon the waters, what they met solid or slimy, as
- 16:18in a raging sea, tossed up and down together, crowded drove from each
- 16:22side, shoaling towards the mouth of Hell, as when to polar winds blowing
- 16:27adverse upon the Cronian Sea, together drive mountains of ice that stopped the imagined
- 16:33way beyond Petsaura, eastward to the rich Cathayan coast. The aggregated soil Death
- 16:41with his mace patrific, cold and dry as with a trident smote, and
- 16:47fixed as firm as de loss, floating once the rest his look bound with
- 16:52Gorgonian rigor not to move, and with asphaltic slime, broad as the gate
- 16:57deep to the roots of Hell. The gathered beach they fastened, and the
- 17:03mole immense wrought on over the foaming deep high arched a bridge of length prodigious,
- 17:08joining to the wall immovable of this now fence this world forfeit to death.
- 17:15From hence a passage broad, smooth, easy, inoffensive, down to
- 17:21Hell. So if great things to small may be compared, Xerxes, the
- 17:26liberty of Greece to yoke from Susa, his Memnonian palet high, came to
- 17:30the sea and over hellispont bridging his way Europe with Asia joined and scourged with
- 17:37many a stroke th indignant waves. Now had they brought the work by wondrous
- 17:44art pontifical, a ridge of pendent rock over the vext abyss, following the
- 17:48track of Satan to the self same place where he first lighted from his wing
- 17:52and landed safe from out of chaos, to the outside bear of this round
- 17:57world. With pins of adamant and chains they made all fast, too fast
- 18:03they made and durable. And now in little space the confines met of imperi
- 18:08in heaven and of this world. And on the left hand Hell, with
- 18:12long reach interposed three several ways in sight to each of these three places led
- 18:19and now their way to Earth. They had descried to Paradise, first tending
- 18:23when behold Satan, in likeness of an angel, bright betwixt the centaur and
- 18:29the scorpions, steering his zenith, while the sun in aries rose. Disguised
- 18:34he came, but those his children deer. Their parents soon discerned. Though
- 18:40in disguise he after Eve seduced unminded, slunk into the wood, fast by
- 18:47and changing shape to observe the sequel, saw his guileful act by Eve,
- 18:52though all unweting seconded upon her husband saw their shame that sought vain covertures.
- 18:59But when he saw descend the son of God to judge them, terrified,
- 19:03he fled, not hoping to escape, but shunned the present, fearing guilty
- 19:07what his wrath might suddenly inflict that past. Returned by night and listening where
- 19:14the hapless pair sat in their sad discourse and various plaint thence gathered his own
- 19:18doom, which understood not instant but of future time. With joy and tidings
- 19:26fraught to hell. He now returned, and at the brink of chaos,
- 19:30near the foot of this new wondrous pontifice, unhoped met who to meet him
- 19:34came his offspring Deer. Great joy was at their meeting, and at sight
- 19:40of that stupendous bridge, his joy increased. Long he and biring stood till
- 19:45Sin his fair enchanting daughter. Thus the silence broke, O parent, These
- 19:52are thy magnific deeds, thy trophies, which thou view'st as not thine own.
- 19:57Thou art their author and prime architect. For I no sooner in my
- 20:03heart divined my heart, which by a secret harmony still moves with Thine,
- 20:07joined in connection suite that Thou on Earth hadst prospered, which thy looks now
- 20:12also evidence but straight I felt, though distant from thee worlds between, yet
- 20:18felt that I must after THEE with this thy son, such fatal consequence unites
- 20:25us three. Hell could no longer hold us in her bounds, nor this
- 20:30unvoyageable gulf obscure detained from following thy illustrious track. Thou hast achieved our liberty
- 20:37confined within hell gates, till now thou ust empowered to fortify thus far and
- 20:44overlay with this portentous bridge the dark abyss Thye now is all this world.
- 20:49Thy virtue hath won what thy hands builded, not thy wisdom gained with odds
- 20:56what war hath lost, and fully avenged our foil in heavin. Here thou
- 21:00shalt monarch reign there didst not there let him still victor sway as battle.
- 21:07Hath adjudged from this new world, retiring by his own doom, alienated,
- 21:12and henceforth monarchy, with THEE divide of all things parted by them perial bounds,
- 21:19his quadrature from thy orbicular world. Or try THEE now more dangerous to
- 21:25his throne, whom thus the Prince of Darkness answered, glad fair daughter and
- 21:32thou son and grandchild, both high proof, Ye now have given to be
- 21:36the race of Satan. For I glory in the name antagonist of Heaven's al
- 21:41mighty king. Amply have merited of me of all the infernal empire that so
- 21:45near Heaven's door, triumphal with triumphal act of met mine with this glorious work,
- 21:52and made one realm Hell, and this world one realm, one continent
- 21:57of easy thoroughfare. Therefore, while I descend through darkness on your road with
- 22:03ease to my associate, powers them to acquaint with these successes, and with
- 22:07them rejoice you too. This way among those numerous orbs, all yours right
- 22:14down to Paradise, descend there, dwell and reigning bliss. Thence on the
- 22:18earth dominion exercise, and in the air, chiefly on man sole Lord,
- 22:22have all declared him. First, make sure your thrall, and lastly kill
- 22:27my substitutes I send you, and create plenty potent on earth of matchless might,
- 22:33issuing from me on your joint vigor. Now my hold of this new
- 22:37kingdom all depends through sin to death exposed by my exploit. If your joint
- 22:44power prevail the fares of hell, no detriment need fear, go and be
- 22:48strong. So, saying he dismissed them, they with speed their course through
- 22:53thickest constellations, held spreading their bane. The blastest star looked wan and planet's
- 23:00planets struck real eclipsed, then suffered. The other way, Satan went down
- 23:06the causeway to hell Gate. On either side disparted, chaos overbuilt, exclaimed,
- 23:12and with rebounding surge, the bars assailed that scorned his indignation. Through
- 23:18the gate, wide open and unguarded, Satan passed and with all about found
- 23:22desolate, for those appointed to sit there had left their charge flown to the
- 23:27upper world. The rest were all far to the inland, retired about the
- 23:33walls of Pandemonium City and proud seat of Lucifer. So by illusion called of
- 23:38that bright star to Satan. Paragond there kept their watch the legions, while
- 23:45the Grand in Council sat solicitous. What chance might intercept their emperor sent so
- 23:52he departing, gave command, and they observed as when the Tartar from his
- 23:56Russian foe by Astra, Khan of the Snowy Plains retires, or Bactrin Sophie
- 24:03from the horns of Turkish crescent leaves all waste beyond the realm of Aladl In
- 24:07his retreat to Taris or cas been so these the late heaven banished host left
- 24:14desert utmost hell, many a dark league, reduced in careful watch round their
- 24:18metropolis, and now expecting each hour their great adventurer from the search of foreign
- 24:25worlds. He through the midst un marked in show Plebeian angel, militant of
- 24:30lowest order passed, and from the door of that Plutonian hall invisible ascended his
- 24:36high throne, which, under state of richest texture spread at upper end,
- 24:41was placed in regal luster. Down a while he sat and round about him
- 24:47sore, unseen. At last, as from a cloud, his fulgent head
- 24:52and shaped starbright appeared or brighter, clad with what permissive glory since his fall
- 24:56was left him or false glit all amazed at that so sudden blaze. The
- 25:03Stygian throng bent their aspect, and whom they wished beheld their mighty chief,
- 25:08returned. Loud was the claim. Forth rushed in haste the great consulting peers
- 25:15raised from their dark divan, and with like joy congratulant approached him, who,
- 25:21with hand silence and with these words attention one thrones, dominations, princedoms,
- 25:27virtues, powers for in possession such not only of right, I call
- 25:33ye and declare ye now returned, successful beyond hope, to lead ye forth
- 25:37triumphant, out of this infernal pit, abominable, accursed, the house of
- 25:42woe and dungeon of our tyrant, now possess as lords a spacious world to
- 25:48our native heaven, little inferior by my adventure, hard with peril grate achieved.
- 25:55Long were to tell what I have done, what suffered, with what
- 25:57pain? Voyage unris vast, unbounded, deep of horrible confusion, over which
- 26:03by sin and death a broad way now is paved to expedite your glorious march.
- 26:10But I toiled out my uncouth passage, forced to ride the untractable abyss,
- 26:15plunged in the womb of unoriginal Knight and chaos wild, that, jealous
- 26:19of their secrets, fiercely opposed my journey, strange with clamorous uproar, protesting
- 26:26fate supreme. Thence how I found the new created world, which fame in
- 26:30Heaven long had foretold, a fabric wonderful of absolute perfection. Therein man placed
- 26:37in a paradise by our exile, made happy him by fraud, I have
- 26:42seduced from his creator, and the more to increase your wonder with an apple
- 26:48he thereat offended worth your laughter. Hath given up both his beloved man and
- 26:52all his world to sin and death, a prey, and so to us,
- 26:57without our hazard labor or alae arm, to range in and to dwell
- 27:02an over man, to rule as over all he should have ruled. True
- 27:06is me also he hath judged, or rather mean not but the brute serpent,
- 27:11in whose shape man I have deceived, that which to me belongs his
- 27:15enmity, which he will put between me and mankind. I am to bruise
- 27:21his heel, his seed, when is not set, shall bruise my head
- 27:26a world who would not purchase with a bruise or much more grievous pain.
- 27:30Ye have the count of my performance. What remains, ye gods? But
- 27:36up and enter now into full bliss. So having said a while, he
- 27:40stood, expecting their universal shout and high applause to fill his ear. When
- 27:45contrary, he hears, on all sides, from innumerable tongues, a dismal,
- 27:49universal hiss, the sound of public scorn. He wondered, but not
- 27:55long had leisure, wondering at himself now more, his visit drawn, he
- 28:00felt to sharpened spare. His arms clung to his ribs, his legs entwining
- 28:04each other, till supplanted down he fell a monstrous serpent on his belly,
- 28:11Prone, reluctant, but in vain. A greater power now ruled him,
- 28:15punished in the shapey sind according to his doom, he would have spoke,
- 28:22but hiss, for hiss returned with forked tongue to forked tongue, For now
- 28:26were all transformed alike to serpents, all as accessories to his bold riot.
- 28:33Dreadful was the din of hissing through the hall, thick swarming now with complicated
- 28:37monsters, head and tail, scorpion and asp and amphis beIN a dyre kerastes
- 28:45horn, hydrus and Ilop's drea and dipsus. Not so thick swarmed once the
- 28:51soil be dropped with blood of Gorgon or the isle off Usa. But still
- 28:56greatest teeth the midst now dragon, grown larger than whom the sun engendered in
- 29:02the Pythian veil on slime, huge python, and his power no less,
- 29:07he seemed above the rest, still to retain they all him followed, issuing
- 29:11forth to the open field, where all yet left of that revolted route heaven
- 29:17fallen in station, stood or just array, sublime with expectation. When to
- 29:22see in triumph, issuing forth their glorious chief, they saw but other sight
- 29:29instead, a crowd of ugly serpents. Horror on them fell, and horrid
- 29:33sympathy for what they saw they felt themselves now changing down their arms down,
- 29:41fell both spear and shield down they as fast, and the dire hiss renewed,
- 29:45and the dire form caught by contagion, like in punishment, as in
- 29:51their crime. Thus was the plause they meant, turned to exploding hiss,
- 29:57triumph to shame cast on them cells from their own mouths. There stood a
- 30:03grove hard by sprung up with this their change his will, who reigns above
- 30:07to aggravate their penance, laden with fair fruit like that which grew in paradise,
- 30:12the bait of eve used by the tempter on that prospect. Strange Their
- 30:18earnest eyes they fixed, imagining for one forbidden tree, and multitude now risen
- 30:25to work them further woe or shame, yet parched with scolding, thirst and
- 30:30hunger fierce though to delude them, scent could not abstain. But on they
- 30:34rolled in heaps and up the trees, climbing sat thicker than the snaky locks
- 30:40that curled Megeira. Greedily they plucked the fruitage fair to sight, like that
- 30:45which grew near that bituminous lake where sodom flamed. This more delusive, not
- 30:51the touch, but taste. Deceived, they fondly, thinking to allay their
- 30:56appetite with gust. Instead of fruit, chewed bitter ashes, which the fended
- 31:02taste with spattering noise rejected off they essayed hunger and thirst, constraining, drugged
- 31:08as oft with hatefullest disrelish, writhed their jaws with soot and cinders filled so
- 31:15off they fell into the same illusion, not as man, whom they triumphed
- 31:19once lapsed. Thus were they plagued and worn with famine, long and ceaseless
- 31:26hiss, till their lost shape permitted they resumed yearly, enjoyed, some say
- 31:33to undergo this annual humbling certain numbered days, to dash their pride and joy
- 31:38for man seduced. However, some tradition they dispersed among the heathen of their
- 31:44purchase, got and fabled how the serpent, whom they called Offion. With
- 31:48the uryinumy, the wide encroaching eve perhaps had first the rule of High Olympus,
- 31:55thence by satin driven and ops Ere. Yet dic Tee and Jove was
