- 0:45Welcome back to be boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:48I'm Curtis Wilson. I'm Brian Sigler, buddy.
- 0:53Wednesday night. We back pump, we back is hump
- 0:57day. It doesn't feel like fall
- 1:00outside. We value, you know, we're
- 1:04clipping the 90s this week for whatever reason we went from
- 1:07like it's that, what is this? This is false fall, right?
- 1:11If the eight seasons of Virginia whether oh yeah, we're currently
- 1:14in false fall. We got like the week of the
- 1:16North Carolina game was fall. Perfect, like 79 degrees during
- 1:22the day. What low 70s?
- 1:24Mid 60's during the game? Cool.
- 1:28Nah. Nah, he's hot brutal, weather.
- 1:31Not some ribs as one last Roar here, before it goes quietly
- 1:35into the night. There needs to go.
- 1:39I'm I'm I'm done with Summer the pools.
- 1:41Pretty much closed. The kids are in school.
- 1:46I ain't asking what once I get back from vacation kind of like
- 1:49Late July after. After my anniversary, I'm kind
- 1:52of like, all right. Right?
- 1:53Y'all can keep the rest of the summer.
- 1:55Let's bring on Fall. Yeah, I mean, thankfully,
- 1:58thankfully, we have a podcast and we follow football.
- 2:00So August kind of goes by pretty quick for us, August flies by
- 2:05when you're on a podcast. And once August hits in every
- 2:09facet, it's it flies by the next thing.
- 2:12You know, we are going to Blink and maybe seven to ten days.
- 2:15It is going to be 80 degrees for a high note humidity, the nights
- 2:20are going to be perfect at the fire pit out.
- 2:23But as of right now, for the rest of this week here in the
- 2:26r-va and I believe throughout most greater Virginia.
- 2:30Yeah, we're sticking in the mid-80s.
- 2:31Looks like we get some low 80s starting next week.
- 2:34So, fingers crossed. Fingers crossed.
- 2:37She chose up. I'm definitely ready for fire
- 2:39pit and outdoor movie nights and we're still about 10 or 15
- 2:44degrees away from that. We are definitely that so folks,
- 2:49before we get into deep topic, welcome to hate week 1.0 the
- 2:57battle for the Black Diamond trophy is upon us.
- 3:02It has been four years since we played the West Virginia
- 3:05Mountaineers back in 2017 up at FedEx.
- 3:10Yep, I think it's bull that they got the first home game.
- 3:15In this series, they'll be coming to the Lane next year
- 3:19before we get deep diving into that.
- 3:21We do have a few things. We want to take a look at first
- 3:24and let's start kind of around the ACC brined earlier this week
- 3:31announced filled your kovich, the quarterback up out of BC is
- 3:34now done for the year. I'm going to go ahead and say it
- 3:39this pretty much flips my prediction of that from a win or
- 3:43a loss to a win. In just not knowing who the
- 3:48backup is as of yet. And you know he was that guy if
- 3:53he took the step he was going to get them to be the you know 2nd
- 3:56to 4th best team and now he's gone.
- 3:59Well that's you I'm kind of right there with you.
- 4:01I think that this was a game that playing in hostile
- 4:07environment and just the skill level.
- 4:11That BC was showing they were starting to kind of climb that
- 4:14mountain a little It huh? Not having that quarterback is
- 4:18going to be a big deal. I feel like this goes from a
- 4:21kind of a lien BC to at least a toss-up for us, right?
- 4:26Um, I think it's now lean Tech. I mean because if you go there,
- 4:31I can definitely go there. But uh, I'm trying to be a
- 4:34little conservative here. I don't want to Discount would
- 4:37be seized doing here. But, you know, I think in terms
- 4:40of getting the ball down the field, they're going to struggle
- 4:43a little bit. The It is going to be, can they
- 4:46replace that with what seems to be a little bit of an improved
- 4:49defense and somewhat improved running game?
- 4:53So yeah, we shall see. Yeah, the backup is Dennis
- 4:57Grassle. He did play some last year for
- 5:00BC, let me see if I can get his testicle numbers up here.
- 5:07He played last year to the tune of 54 attempts. 37 completion,
- 5:1368% 568. So six touchdowns three
- 5:18interceptions. So not terrible for last year.
- 5:22He obviously played in some in last week's game against UMass
- 5:27as I feel went down, you know again time, we'll see but to me,
- 5:34you don't go from a guy like your kovich to the back up it's
- 5:39half. He's going to have his work.
- 5:40Cut out for him and maybe the way you can say it's a toss-up
- 5:45for you now is now they have six weeks to get prepared for us or
- 5:50to find the groove of what we're going to do.
- 5:52While we don't, you know, While we don't know what beholds for
- 5:57us yet, true, although the same time we've got tape on their
- 6:01backup quarterback, which if this happened the week before,
- 6:05we don't exactly know, what type of game plan they're going to
- 6:07have for me this point. By the time we see them will
- 6:10know what they like to do with rasul and can prepare for it on
- 6:14defense. Very, very, very true.
- 6:17All right. Next is look at Georgia Tech,
- 6:20Jeff Sims went out against Northern Illinois.
- 6:23Did not play against Kenneth Allstate Yates, the backup took
- 6:26over and for me. That's what's your thoughts on
- 6:31this so far? Brian with Sims out.
- 6:34Haven't heard much if he's going to play this week against
- 6:37Clemson. I mean, that's that's a, that's
- 6:44a struggling situation. That's, you're adding insult to
- 6:46injury there, right? You?
- 6:49Jeff says, it's probably the most consistent element of team
- 6:53last year. And losing him week one, not
- 6:58having a week to haven't heard a whole lot about his availability
- 7:00this week that definitely definitely limits their ceiling.
- 7:05And it was a ceiling that was bouncing around already, right?
- 7:11So you know it's going to depend on how long he's out in terms of
- 7:16what Georgia Tech's able to do over the coming weeks.
- 7:19Is he out another three to four weeks there?
- 7:21Is he out just another one or two?
- 7:24Well, regardless, if he's out just one or two or if he's back
- 7:28this week against Clemson for them, those first two games
- 7:31against Northern Illinois and Kennesaw State, we're going to
- 7:33be his in game development games.
- 7:36Where he can get on the field, they can try plays, they can see
- 7:39what he's seen because now this is the way their schedule looks
- 7:43up until Virginia Tech, okay? You're a headache, Clemson,
- 7:47North Carolina it, they then have Duke then UVA then, uh, so
- 7:55you John, you see you John. So, it's like, they're not
- 7:59coming into playing lesser opponents to give him time to
- 8:04again. Get that in game development.
- 8:06Comment, give us feedback from owners, like go play, Clemson,
- 8:09then go play North Carolina, then play pit, you're playing
- 8:13one elite. Team one good team, one solid
- 8:17team. You finally get Duke and then
- 8:19you get UVA before you get text. So those first two games, as we
- 8:23used to see it in the past building confidence, finding
- 8:28plays, you know, work with the guy and that's gone.
- 8:31So it's going to be interesting if he does come back as he
- 8:35automatically back or is Yates the guy.
- 8:39Yeah. And I mean, it seems like like
- 8:42we said in terms of where that ceiling is, you feel like Jeff
- 8:45Sims, probably gets them higher but much, how they may be able
- 8:50to work worked back up in there for the last couple weeks is
- 8:53probably going to have them again this week.
- 8:56Maybe just a but there's no riding the hot hand, right?
- 9:00No, there's no no. It's because there's not a hot
- 9:03hand there is, and it's also the level Sims is a look.
- 9:09He's an elite athlete. That to me with the way Georgia
- 9:12Tech is right now. He has to be out there.
- 9:14He's gonna give him the best chance to win, so it's just
- 9:16going to be interesting if he does come back against Clemson a
- 9:20against that defense with really kind of going to be your first
- 9:24true game. I mean, that's going to get
- 9:25ugly, I mean, and we'll talk about that line a little bit
- 9:30later and what I'd be willing to lay, all right, Brian, even
- 9:34though this is an ACC news, it's college football news.
- 9:38To me, it has a potential big trickle down for Virginia Tech
- 9:43and for the east coast in general clay Helton gets fired
- 9:46Monday after losing to Stanford by essentially getting blown out
- 9:51by a Stanford team that did not look like.
- 9:53It could play the previous week against Kansas State and every
- 9:59name under your mother's popping up, Urban Meyer, Jack Del Rio
- 10:03Eric, be on the knee. Tonio.
- 10:07You sing got thrown out there but the one that got said again
- 10:11and we've heard it in the past James Franklin.
- 10:15Yeah, I mean, I know Dan Patrick made the announcement this
- 10:20morning that there is mutual interest between the two
- 10:23parties. I don't know what, what degree
- 10:25that means. That, you know, Franklin is the
- 10:29leader in the clubhouse terms of what they want at at Southern
- 10:33Cal, but it's going to be interested in.
- 10:36I see from the trickle-down because you in the last, you
- 10:40know, Max been been coming across the border into into the
- 10:43757 the last two to three years, but James Franklin has been
- 10:47dipping his toes down in Virginia for the last eight or
- 10:50nine. Yeah, and it's been, you know,
- 10:54especially as the skill positions you seen running backs
- 10:59in particular taking their talents up to Penn State, so it
- 11:03will be nice to see him go. So if for no other reason, that
- 11:08more than likely, the next guy in probably at least is going to
- 11:12take a year or two to get get his legs under him for the
- 11:15recruiting starts to uptake again.
- 11:18Well, the question is, can pin State grab another Elite.
- 11:20Recruiter, like James Franklin, they had Bill O'Brien before
- 11:24that you had Joe Papp for all the years before that Franklin
- 11:27was an elite recruiter. He is a good coach and of his
- 11:31in-game decisions can be questioned here and there but he
- 11:34would Vanderbilt in the top 25. And your rights who will happen
- 11:39when seasons of Penn State's of. Well, I don't know, I mean, a
- 11:41Big Ten title Rose Bowl. I mean, a bunch of different
- 11:46stuff. He has been coming down and he's
- 11:48not just been coming down to 75. It's been all over, Virginia
- 11:53grabbing the talent, the biggest differential between him and Mac
- 11:56is Max going particular to one area?
- 11:59Yes, he did get the yes he did get Jennings out of here in the
- 12:02RV. A Max also 68 years old And the
- 12:08thing with Mac right now, they have a big game this weekend.
- 12:12They've already lost, Virginia Tech.
- 12:16And now it's, you know, you already saw the didn't Jenny's
- 12:20tweet something after the game, like what like, yeah, dude, like
- 12:25UNC doesn't hold a candle when it comes to Tech Penn State.
- 12:29It's just been tough because it's almost like when Franklin
- 12:32got his hands, and his claws into a recruit.
- 12:35We could get it back, we'd be on track with somebody.
- 12:38You here. Oh good, we this is great.
- 12:39We're probably going to land in, he comes in makes a visit, gets
- 12:42the claws, take some back. Now, I'm going to say this this
- 12:46and this is me being a college football fan.
- 12:49If you are James Franklin and you want to win a National
- 12:53Title, your best bet is to go to USC Penn State.
- 12:58He has been stacking essentially, top 12 classes.
- 13:00I know they have the number to class right now in the country,
- 13:03I believe or number one. I think that'll change as, you
- 13:07know, the biggest dogs get the highest in Tallinn over the next
- 13:12five months. Yep.
- 13:13But USC has the Introduced at top five classes on top of each
- 13:18other. And it is a national brand, so
- 13:23he still could come to Virginia in attempt to get Talent.
- 13:27You could go anywhere in attempt to get Talent.
- 13:30So he also doesn't have to leave his State.
- 13:32You also doesn't have to really his City recruit in California
- 13:39is very true. I mean, the the amount of talent
- 13:42just in, you know, hour and a half of the campus is
- 13:48incredible. It's true.
- 13:50It's a crazy amount. That's true.
- 13:53John he can't get over the Ohio State.
- 13:56He can't get over the Ohio State, huh?
- 13:58And the reason he can't get Ohio State hump, how state is
- 14:01stacking top five classes on each other?
- 14:04Yep you know he's got the one win he's competed with them.
- 14:08So you know I think it's the move after the season unless he
- 14:14you know does something crazy and wins a national title.
- 14:18That's the only way I can't see him leaving.
- 14:20Yeah, I don't think they're quite there yet.
- 14:23There are good team this year, although he they are catching
- 14:25Ohio state is probably as weak as they've been in a while.
- 14:30True, but you also now have a wounded, Ohio State, and
- 14:33usually, when Ohio state gets wounded as when they play their
- 14:36best, all that they put to a put you know somewhat of a duck out
- 14:42there and then kind of played 1/2 down to an opponent before
- 14:47putting them away. So yeah.
- 14:50It's true, man. All right, next we are going to
- 14:54turn to Hokies news and notes and on Saturday night we maybe
- 14:57we shouldn't have said it Brian, but it was said, looks like
- 15:00James Mitchell's, okay? The news comes down earlier this
- 15:04week. James out with a knee injury
- 15:06rest of the season. Will have surgery is an absolute
- 15:12gutshot. Big-time big-time got shot.
- 15:16And let's talk about the announcement first because I'm
- 15:19not sure what went down with that weather was a
- 15:22miscommunication or what was going on.
- 15:25Whether, you know, in terms of his his well-being and whether
- 15:28he was going to be good to go to the sounded like postgame, they
- 15:31thought he was going to be good to go to, at least, get some
- 15:34practice in and then play against West Virginia, and then
- 15:38we got, you know, not just different news, but in the
- 15:42communities that direction, right?
- 15:45So that's a little disappointing.
- 15:46I'm not sure where the disconnect in the information
- 15:49channel was there but let's let's not focus on that.
- 15:53Let's focus on the player and you know, we talked about him
- 15:58being a talent him being versatile.
- 15:59But the one thing I think we're going to miss the most is the
- 16:02on-field leadership. Yep.
- 16:04That he brought to the table. He was kind of a calming effect
- 16:08but also that leader that, you know, when He barked people,
- 16:10listen. Yep.
- 16:12It's very true. And now, the question is, who
- 16:15amongst the offensive skill players steps up into that role?
- 16:21Because on the line, you've obviously got Brock and lettuce
- 16:24who they bark everybody listens. So who is among that skill set
- 16:30does Burmeister step up into the type role.
- 16:32Is it trade Turner? Is it someone else?
- 16:35We don't quite know yet, but that's got to happen.
- 16:38It's got to have the calming effect because you know, we joke
- 16:42about The governor. That's what he was.
- 16:43It was one of those. Everybody listen to him, we're
- 16:47going to miss so much that leadership, the versatility, I
- 16:50mean, his run blocking, which looked even better than it did
- 16:54last year and you know? So now what we've got to turn
- 16:59the page, you know, we got to turn the page and we've got to
- 17:03look in, I don't hate saying this, this was one position that
- 17:09if the top guy went down, Would probably going to be okay.
- 17:16Your ceiling Falls, but the floor is still pretty high,
- 17:19right? Yes.
- 17:21So I think that's a good thing for that position because
- 17:24there's other positions that, you know, when the ceiling goes
- 17:28down, the floor goes out, we all we all must go to the floor to
- 17:31so, right? But having Nick Gallo in trade
- 17:35to Louis as, as kind of the back up there, that's going to be big
- 17:41because they not only had some A lot of game game reps at this
- 17:45point if they have. But, you know, you also have a
- 17:49little bit of a kind of two guys that can together.
- 17:54Do some of the things that James Mitchell did is one person,
- 17:57right? So we talked about it until he
- 17:59but you know Nick better little bit better in the blocking game
- 18:03and Red Zone touches where his drinks a little bit better in
- 18:06the open field, on some of those throwback screens and things
- 18:09like that. So the more athletic little bit
- 18:13more fluid And I'm interested to see Gallo though, because I
- 18:18think Gallows going to get more snaps.
- 18:20I think if Gallo has any, if he has 70% of what James Mitchell
- 18:26path, if it shows it needs to show quick, because he's
- 18:31essentially, because James is so good at what he does.
- 18:34Gallo in a way has been sort of Pigeon-holed into that role and
- 18:37you say like you're out, you're out, you're blocking tight in,
- 18:41you're not going to go out on routes when I will send you up
- 18:43to seem not all the time as he called some balls.
- 18:47Yes. But now it's going to be your
- 18:51one egg. What can you do?
- 18:55Yeah. I mean if you've got that that
- 18:57tight in one route set you're giving that to Mitchell every
- 18:59time, right? So absolutely, yeah.
- 19:01Well we'll see if Gallo can step into that role and do and do a
- 19:05little bit with that. But what we talked about third
- 19:09tight end, we actually have John here talking about third side
- 19:15in. Well, you know, we're going
- 19:19Connor blumrich here, actually are cute.
- 19:22Cute qb3 becomes tight. Ten 33.
- 19:26Yes. And Chris Coleman said it and I
- 19:28think a lot of people were thinking it but Cohen from TS L
- 19:32said it. Me and you had bounced it off
- 19:34each other via text. It's some point.
- 19:39I'm on the James Mitchell news was announced but luckily,
- 19:43Connor got in and got some live touches.
- 19:45I don't know how good his hands are, you know, there were
- 19:49reports that he had some sort of similar role to an HVAC.
- 19:53Type role at am sure some games. But yeah, I mean he's 65, he's
- 19:59220 pounds, he's definitely not going to you're not going to
- 20:02look at in line blocking, but he's definitely could be a joker
- 20:04tight end or run H back out of the backfield.
- 20:07I think if there is a creative, Heart of our offensive mind.
- 20:15It has to come alive now. Yeah.
- 20:20Well, because this is jeans is versatility.
- 20:22It was really hard to replace that but I feel like you can buy
- 20:25committee do all the things that you were doing before you just
- 20:30have to do with different Personnel, right?
- 20:32Yeah. And I think Connor helps add to
- 20:35that. Just because of his, his overall
- 20:38athleticism and his top end speed there.
- 20:42Good. You know, again, we haven't seen
- 20:44his hands. What that looks like yet.
- 20:46We've seen him with the ball in his hand running, looks good
- 20:49doing that, very good and let's let's talk about what I mean.
- 20:54When I say we don't notice hands look like like if he's got you
- 20:57guys a step or two on somebody and you throw him the ball, I
- 20:59think he's going to catch the ball for throwing a throwback
- 21:02screen, you know, when he's open it and, you know, traffic or
- 21:05anything like that, he's on catch those.
- 21:08What I'm working certain about, is he going to catch, you know,
- 21:11that That seemed with a guy on his back shoulder, is he going
- 21:14to catch that ball? That's kind of thrown high in
- 21:18the end zone where he has to go up and get it and win that
- 21:20battle. Those are those are the catches
- 21:23that I'm concerned about because we don't know what that looks
- 21:25like yet. But you know if you get this guy
- 21:27the ball in space I have no question that he can do some
- 21:30damage. Oh no.
- 21:31Not at all. I mean just look at him in the
- 21:34way he ran especially on that 30-yard run when he gets the
- 21:38ball and he has a crease he can get going.
- 21:43Obviously we saw even I think, even what made you feel even
- 21:46better was running that gold on package that he ran?
- 21:50He took some contact. He took the pit.
- 21:52So you almost feel like, okay, he's not going to shy away from
- 21:56contact. That's kind of his role now.
- 21:59It's like go in there and, you know, bust it open.
- 22:03But other than him I mean really he's the option.
- 22:08Yeah, he's the option. I think we're going to, I mean,
- 22:10potentially we're gonna see more.
- 22:12Three-wide sets. Hopefully in bronze eyes, we see
- 22:16more duel running back sets to change the pace up a little bit
- 22:22but that and like we said, we've talked about was getting one
- 22:24mark on the field. I mean, that creates the
- 22:26mismatches there as well. So we'll create the same
- 22:29creative, go ahead, that was some creative things.
- 22:32We can do Personnel was to to really keep defenses on their
- 22:37toes. Despite not having James
- 22:38Mitchell in there, it's just going to use is our coordinator
- 22:41is Our offensive coaching staff going to take advantage of that.
- 22:45Yeah, the other thing about you talk about mismatches, also the
- 22:48possibility of a trick play. We know the guy has been a
- 22:51quarterback. So I hate to say this, I'm not
- 22:55hate to say this, but I like saying this, you get down inside
- 22:58the 10 and you decide to run a little sweet with him, and you
- 23:03do that behind the quarterback. If everybody syncs up, there's
- 23:08going to be somebody open and can he get the ball there?
- 23:10And then the next thing, you know, no, the lanes are opening
- 23:13up because now, someone a stay with the guy Paul stood over
- 23:18there, one time he might feel it.
- 23:19Thinking a little jet sweet pass.
- 23:21We'll just sweet pass. That'd be something interesting
- 23:24to see. Let me think about this.
- 23:25All right, let's go and Brawn. We did this last week.
- 23:28We looked at some snap counts, we're going to look at them
- 23:30again. Shout out Evan Watkins over at
- 23:3324/7 for putting this up but we're gonna start the
- 23:36linebacking corps because I think Brian that is where we are
- 23:40feeling really good. Seeing how many guys got snaps?
- 23:44So Tisdale High field obviously 5246 now it's respectively but
- 23:50we go down a little bit and both.
- 23:53Ferguson and Keyshawn artists, both with 25 snaps.
- 23:58That's a lot. That's a big number and I will
- 24:02say, looking at the tape and looking at everything.
- 24:05Keyshawn artist played a really good game those stamps.
- 24:08Do you got in there? Almost had to pick one time.
- 24:11Stuck his nose, in there. Got a couple of tackles just
- 24:14really overall, good game for him showed that really him and
- 24:19Dean Ferguson in there. There wasn't a ton of drop off
- 24:22from the first line to the second line because those guys
- 24:25got in there. When Middle Tennessee still had
- 24:28their starters in the game, so yeah.
- 24:30A good job for both of them and good job.
- 24:33Overall, from the linebacking corps, I feel like everybody had
- 24:36a really good game overall, nothing splashy but I don't
- 24:39really need splashy from from the linebackers, the way this
- 24:42defense is design. I just need them to be where
- 24:44they need to be and make the tackle exactly.
- 24:47It's the way the defensive design, do your job.
- 24:49It's going to be fine with them getting that much.
- 24:51I think, now, again, it was Middle Tennessee, State.
- 24:55It was a G5 school, but I think now, maybe in the back of
- 24:59Justin, Hamilton's, my And if I want to give that accent is a
- 25:04full were either 4325 plays. I think what happens is he's not
- 25:12afraid now. I put these out there, I put the
- 25:15right coverage in. They're going to do their jobs.
- 25:17I'm not worried about liabilities.
- 25:20Yeah, because it's showing that they can do it a couple other
- 25:24ones before. Look at wide receiver, Brian
- 25:27Cole Nelson, 12 reps, Oops, snaps Wilfred Panay 14, Jalen
- 25:35Griffin 17. Keeping up with his normal CJ,
- 25:38McRae with 20. I like that.
- 25:42We had talked about him possibly getting some extra reps this
- 25:45week and then it came to fruition.
- 25:48And the number says that he's kind of that almost working into
- 25:53that, that that same number with that second line, right?
- 25:56Yeah, I'm he got more than Griffin.
- 25:58Yeah, you know and he definitely got let me see if I can find it
- 26:03here and he got more than he liked our atoms.
- 26:07By the way. Miss stretch Carol 14.
- 26:09They Got some play, but the McRae thing does Stand Out Ron
- 26:132020 is a big number when you know you're looking at the top
- 26:17guys bar. No.
- 26:20And Garbutt with 4437 respectively.
- 26:23Yep. So they probably overall played
- 26:27a little bit more than we probably wanted them to.
- 26:30Yes. But I like that we were able to
- 26:33get a true 33 deep line, rotating a defensive end.
- 26:38Yeah. That's a good sign.
- 26:40Another good sign is getting some of the freshmen that we
- 26:43need. Probably going to need more in
- 26:46late October and November. Then we need them right now, but
- 26:49getting them reps now is going to pay off once that time comes.
- 26:54So again, the key is going to be keep guys healthy, keep them as
- 26:57fresh as possible and hopefully, get some of the younger guys
- 27:00enough reps, where they can give us meaningful snaps and
- 27:03meaningful games. Absolutely.
- 27:05All right, next we want to look at the wide receiver, see how
- 27:08that's starting to shake out. No shot Tavian Robinson Leading
- 27:12The Way with 50 snaps Trey, Turner, 45.
- 27:16Caleb Smith with 44 and then Jaden pay.
- 27:21You got 17 snaps so quite a few for him Lofton with nine, Jalen
- 27:26Jones with sixth. I'm going to start here and I
- 27:31said it's Saturday night and I'll say it again on Wednesday
- 27:33night. If Lofton and Jones are showing
- 27:36that much have to get on them on the field more than essentially
- 27:41one series. Yep.
- 27:43You have it. It's starting to get
- 27:46infuriating. Like, if they're showing if
- 27:48you're talking them up and you're not giving them a playing
- 27:51time, then don't talk them up because clearly you don't have
- 27:55any meaning to get them on the field.
- 27:58Yeah and it's disappointing seeing them essentially.
- 28:00I think if I'm not mistaken Lofton, was you Used one series
- 28:06before kind of garbage time you pay you got a little bit more
- 28:10run but I still would have liked to see him get more snaps.
- 28:14And unfortunately from it just a Target standpoint we're still
- 28:18not getting the Targets in the passing game that we need to do
- 28:23a lot of even a lot of our calls are ending up either throws out
- 28:29of bounds or scrambles. We're not getting actually.
- 28:33A whole lot of passes that are actually getting to the point.
- 28:37They need to get to and that's disappointing at this point, you
- 28:42know, we talked about it a little bit on on Saturday night
- 28:45and I'm just going to reiterate it here.
- 28:46We've got to get more consistent in our passing game.
- 28:49Got to get better separation at the wide receiver position and
- 28:53Braxton needs to take a little bit more risk with the football
- 28:57than he is right now, I don't want turnovers, I don't want to
- 29:00go back to Ryan Willis, but I need you to To push the ball a
- 29:04little bit more right now because we're not good enough to
- 29:08wait for that wide open man. Sometimes you got to you got to
- 29:12put the ball and take a calculated risk crew and we're
- 29:15going to discuss that a little more and we get into the banquet
- 29:18Alley. We're going to get a little bit
- 29:22more into that with the gamma version of what we're looking
- 29:25for in the Hokies a little later on in the program run.
- 29:30So now guys, before we get into Know The Enemy working at
- 29:34Virginia tonight, Battlefield Black Diamond trophy.
- 29:37We are going to take a quick pause for a message from our
- 29:41digital partners. All right, Brian.
- 29:44So we're going to get in here, and we're going to start with
- 29:47the West Virginia Mountaineers offense and knowing the enemy
- 29:51and Brawn. I want to start tonight by
- 29:52looking at West, Virginia's, running backs and the offensive
- 29:56line, and we look at the running backs.
- 29:58We've got to look at Levi Brown 5 11 to 16.
- 30:02He was a three-star coming out of high school, but a three-star
- 30:07with offers from Bama and University of Florida, so he
- 30:12obviously had It caught the eye of some pretty high-end Elite
- 30:16teams when you see offers like that.
- 30:19Okay. Was it real?
- 30:20Was it not real? It's reported they at least had
- 30:23enough interest to wear it gained it on 24/7.
- 30:26Now last year hell of a season, 1010 rushing yards about five
- 30:33point one to carry another 202, with 31 receptions, 11
- 30:39touchdowns last year, you know, as far as the receiving goes
- 30:45kind of on the same pace for it this year.
- 30:48What are you seeing out of Lady Browne?
- 30:50The tape he's above average. Runner really is good.
- 30:56Between the tackles, they run a lot of inside Zone.
- 30:58They run that very well. So he's going to, he's going to
- 31:01do a good job in that, making kind of get into the second
- 31:04level making we got Miss and stretching, you know, 5-yard
- 31:08gain into a 12 or 13, yard gain. But to me, he's a bigger threat
- 31:12in the passing game just because they use him really extensively.
- 31:17Both in the screen game, they swing him out, they'll put him
- 31:19in motion and get the ball to him and space.
- 31:22They do a lot of good things with him.
- 31:24I don't see him break a ton of big plays in the passing game,
- 31:28but he is the guy that can kind of move.
- 31:30The sticks for them with kind of you know that little Dash here
- 31:34Dash there eight or ten yards, scoot to the first down.
- 31:39So that's what they really bring to the table but their offensive
- 31:42line is kind of what what keeps that going?
- 31:45They do a good job on the inside Zone.
- 31:48Do a good job with the combos inside getting to the next
- 31:52level. Giving lady Browne, some room to
- 31:56kind of operate and make us miss and space.
- 31:58There. We obviously know.
- 32:00That one of our own Doug Nestor is now playing guard for the
- 32:06Mountaineers. Yes he is handsome made some
- 32:10good classes at the offensive line position over the last kind
- 32:15of two or three Cycles. They're adding in Doug, just
- 32:19kind of helps that. So they're they're pretty good
- 32:22unit, they're not as great in passed through, as they are
- 32:25running the ball, they'll allow sex.
- 32:28And that's, you know, Pounded a little bit by their quarterback
- 32:32and how he kind of operates. But overall, it's going to be a
- 32:38little bit of a struggle for us, but I think our defense and wind
- 32:40is up to the task for it has an ester actually looked, I mean do
- 32:46this, it would Doug, Nestor, be absolutely starting somewhere on
- 32:50our line or would it be rotational?
- 32:54I mean, he definitely be starting for us this year, okay?
- 32:56But at the same time I don't necessarily see a different dog.
- 33:00Mister it, West Virginia than I saw in 2013 for the Hokies, he's
- 33:05a guy that will go out there and get a good pancake, good
- 33:09pulling, good to get into the next level but has some lapses
- 33:12here and there and sometimes that can you have the have the
- 33:18quarterback on his bag? Sometimes that's just you.
- 33:21Miscommunications line of scrimmage and that blows Running
- 33:23plays. So, still up and down sometimes
- 33:26in terms of consistency. But he, when he, when he plays
- 33:32well, he's he's a handful, I've got it, the offensive line, you
- 33:37know. Statistically, you know, they're
- 33:39putting up some points and everything.
- 33:41They have given up, five sacks, and two games.
- 33:44That's against Maryland and that's obviously against Long
- 33:48Island University a FCS upon who two years ago, didn't want to
- 33:52game. And they've given up about nine
- 33:55tackles for loss against both of those teams.
- 33:58So one of those things to keep an eye on them, to drop a stat
- 34:01on you a little bit later, when we wrap up everything Braun that
- 34:04I think is going to shock you a little bit about about that
- 34:09enough. But let's move on Braun and
- 34:12let's take a look at the wide receiver rooms and Brawn.
- 34:15You talked about twins when we were talking a little bit
- 34:17earlier today. And let's talk about these
- 34:20twins, Sam james511 183. Real three-star offers went to
- 34:26what offers from Mississippi State and Georgia Tech.
- 34:29Really? Not really a productive year.
- 34:34You know very productive in 2019, not really productive.
- 34:37Last year, only 31 receptions for 300 yards, 9.7 catch two
- 34:42touchdowns, the other guy, Sean Ryan, the bigger body guy 63.
- 34:46198, 3 star also actually came as a portal transfer over from
- 34:52Temple. Again not great stats in 2020,
- 34:5625 4269, no touchdowns. So from these two guys I know
- 35:01you wanted to talk about them together.
- 35:03What are you seeing on the tape? When we see these guys lined up
- 35:07near each other, So a lot of what we're seeing is, they'll
- 35:12run, they'll put them. Both on the same side of the
- 35:15formation, they run a lot of knife route Concepts.
- 35:18So they're running one of them either on a slant or some sort
- 35:23of inside play, Within the other ones running a corner.
- 35:27They're trying to get you the outside guy on the inside guy to
- 35:30get rubbed. So they can get kind of a free
- 35:32release, they've had a lot of success against Maryland doing
- 35:36that especially in the first half.
- 35:39Barely kind of adjusted to it in the second half when a lot more
- 35:42Zone Concepts in that took away a little bit of that, they were
- 35:46still able to get some completions but they weren't
- 35:47able to kind of bust them for big plays over to middleware,
- 35:51big plays down the sideline. But Sam James is a little bit
- 35:55more of the athlete but Shawn Ryan is is the guy that he
- 36:00doesn't get a ton of ton of caches but when he does, they
- 36:03usually go for pretty big yardage.
- 36:05He said to plays over 30 yards in two games so far.
- 36:09Not a ton of catches but he's doing something with it.
- 36:12Every time he gets his hand on the ball, James is definitely
- 36:15more of the kind of the steady, Eddie the consistent guy, but he
- 36:19is a big play threat as well because of his speed.
- 36:22So, both of those are guys to watch the other person, I will
- 36:26mention in this wide. Receiver core is Winston right
- 36:31jr. And I know you've seen the
- 36:32highlights. A lot of those are going to be,
- 36:36he's going to do some good things in the passing game for
- 36:38them. But but primarily he is a weapon
- 36:41in the Special Teams. Absolutely punt returner and
- 36:45kick returner had two big kick returns against.
- 36:49Maryland did muff a punt though so that that resulted in a
- 36:55turnover. So that's something to watch as
- 36:56well but if he gets his hands on the ball, he can be a threat.
- 37:00So we got to make sure that we're doing well in our coverage
- 37:03on both kick return or kickoff and on a punt.
- 37:08Yeah. Hello, needs to get it to the
- 37:10back of the end zone Brown because it's not a, this isn't a
- 37:13one trick pony with Winston. Right the 59 180 three-star, his
- 37:18career, he's returned 33 kickoffs for 925 yards.
- 37:23He's almost averaging 30 yards every time he takes one out of
- 37:28the end zone, which is that's a, that's an obscene number, in my
- 37:31opinion, in today's age, he's ran to back to the house.
- 37:35We obviously saw one already this year, one, that was Close.
- 37:41We haven't seen him as much in the, we hadn't didn't see him a
- 37:44lot in the Maryland game but last year I mean he can he can
- 37:48definitely hold his own as far as you know, being a receiver
- 37:51being a threat, forty seven receptions last year for 553
- 37:56yards, One Touch. So I'm kind of seeing maybe with
- 38:00that may be little more gadgety with his size and his speed and
- 38:06you know, but Romeo's got to send it.
- 38:09Let that mean. Touch the ball any, as far as
- 38:13our punter goes, Peter more Peter more, keep doing what
- 38:17you're doing, because if you have not been booming on letting
- 38:21the covers team get there, you have been putting good angles on
- 38:24them, I think, Peter more. This is going to put more in the
- 38:27Hokies talk as a freshman. He is a true five star punter
- 38:31because he's coming in and do it exactly what you expect.
- 38:34Somebody that's done the job for three years.
- 38:36Like, Bradburn it done. Yeah.
- 38:38Yeah. He's done a good job.
- 38:39Job so far. I mean, the only thing you got
- 38:41to worry about with the punished, you know, make sure
- 38:43that there's enough air time if you do.
- 38:45Boom it so you're not out kicking the coverage there.
- 38:49Exactly. All right, let's turn it.
- 38:51Let's look at the quarterback. Jared Dodge was a 3-star
- 38:55transferred from Delhi. Diggy Dives 2010 D-Day geeky guy
- 39:08from Bowl. Green back in 2018.
- 39:11Had a really good season with Bowling Green, 27 touchdowns 14
- 39:15interceptions in last year solid season with West Virginia, you
- 39:19know, 63% 63 percent completion percentage 2,500 plus yards, 14
- 39:26touchdowns for interceptions, obviously his brother played
- 39:31Seth played down at Texas Tech. So Brian, what are you seeing
- 39:37from sip? Not Seth.
- 39:39With Jared wrong Duty. What are you seeing from him?
- 39:42On tape, he's not a great athlete, but he is good.
- 39:48Enough to scrambling. Get a first down here there.
- 39:50So we're not preparing for any sort of mobile quarterback, but
- 39:55he does have a little bit of at, which he does have a good feel
- 39:58of went to take off and get the first down.
- 40:00If he needs to, he does really well with the clean pocket,
- 40:04delivers an accurate Ball. But when the Gets a little bit
- 40:10muddled, that's when he struggles.
- 40:13He's thrown a couple pics that I've seen early in this year
- 40:16already. When, when the pocket gets
- 40:19crowded there he gets contacted. So it's going to be interesting
- 40:23to see what we do. We really need to get pressure
- 40:27on him, the sum of their, some of their skiing.
- 40:30With that power power rate is, is what is kind of call.
- 40:33They're combining the power run with the air raid.
- 40:39He does a good job running that and they mix in some RPO
- 40:43elements a lot of inside Zone and counter.
- 40:46And then, you know, they throw the ball off, play action with
- 40:49it. And I think the play action is
- 40:51where we play action. In.
- 40:52Our PO is where we could potentially get burned.
- 40:55I think if we just line up, we're going to hold the whole,
- 41:00The Zone and check. And I think we'll hold just the
- 41:02the five-step drop in check, but we need to make sure that we're
- 41:06not out of position. When you can, we get some runs.
- 41:09Action or that are po going. I hear that something else I'll
- 41:14make a point on Brian because you pulled up a couple clips and
- 41:16showed me a couple days ago in not necessarily a clean pocket
- 41:21but he doesn't really have his pocket Mobility is bad.
- 41:26Like I remember there was one playing you we showed him like
- 41:29Brian why doesn't he just like all he had to do was kind of a
- 41:32couple steps left. We could have reset his feet and
- 41:36fired instead like the guys coming.
- 41:38It's like oh God throat. And he did that numerous times.
- 41:43So I think for us it's it's not only keeping the pocket clean
- 41:47but just making the noise of being there because he clearly
- 41:51does not have the capability to just didn't see him step up, you
- 41:57didn't see him slide left or slide right as much as we want
- 42:01to knock Braxton, we've seen him slide left slide right, we slim
- 42:05slide up in the pocket and then take off and run.
- 42:09Jared doesn't do that in. You know, the one thing that
- 42:12I've been looking at Braun is this, alright.
- 42:16So we're not even going to look at Liu right?
- 42:20The laura-leigh ER it's given up 14 either Sachs or tackles for
- 42:24loss plays in the backfield. Yep.
- 42:27Maryland in two games, has a combined 15.
- 42:32What are those games against Howard?
- 42:35And they blew the doors off of them.
- 42:37You care to guess how many Virginia Tech has between sacks
- 42:40and tackles for loss in two games. 22:27.
- 42:49Okay. Non-sex 18 tackles for loss?
- 42:53So, when I'm starting to look at this, in just like its
- 42:56comparative. Analysis is saying, well, the
- 42:58one team that they play with division, one Talent only has 15
- 43:03for the year, they're not doing a whole lot.
- 43:06You're about to bring essentially a much better
- 43:10defensive line who is getting into the back.
- 43:13Field and bringing people down. Not even counting quarterback
- 43:19hits or pressures. So, when I'm thinking about
- 43:22Jared and his a kind of has a Mobility unless he absolutely
- 43:27has to, or his bad pocket, awareness.
- 43:31I have a feeling that that lines going to get ate all day.
- 43:38Or ate a lot of the day order. He's going to be taking some
- 43:41absolute hits as he's letting go of the ball.
- 43:45Yeah, I think that's the thing. We definitely have to do.
- 43:46We've got to be able to get pressure with for like we did
- 43:49against you and see you know, they're going to run that RPO a
- 43:53little bit. So we I think we can bring a
- 43:55similar type type game plan to the table to try to slow these
- 44:01guys down. The question is going to be?
- 44:04Can we consistently get home with the with the defense with
- 44:08the defense of wine? Especially just bringing for,
- 44:11I'd like us to be less familiar. Nila this week obviously
- 44:15compared to what we did last week, making better be make some
- 44:20more stunts. Some of the The Zone Blitz, some
- 44:23of the delay Blitz but I don't think we need to Blitz a lot.
- 44:27I want to completely get pressure with for and make sure
- 44:30that we're we got the coverage going in the back.
- 44:32And we keep the run and check because we can keep the run in
- 44:36check. Then again like we did against
- 44:40UNC, we make that offense one-dimensional, it's a whole
- 44:43lot easier to stop. Abso-freakin'-lutely.
- 44:46All right, now that we closed down the offense and give you
- 44:49some names and things to look for it.
- 44:51Let's flip it over to the defense bar on the wonderful 335
- 44:56stack, and let's start taking a look.
- 45:02I want to give the guys name and the position, but I want you to
- 45:07explain what it is before you get into too deep so actually.
- 45:11So let's do this first. The Darius Calhoun 64 245, he
- 45:18plays the Bandit position. He's a star transfer from
- 45:22Alabama, the sky was a top hundred pledges few years ago in
- 45:26the country. He only had about eight games
- 45:29prior to this season between Alabama and West.
- 45:32Virginia 14, tackles five-and-a-half tackles for
- 45:36loss, three sacks, one, fourth Rumble.
- 45:38So not a lot of production and just a few games there.
- 45:43But before you get into what you're seeing, On him.
- 45:45What exactly does that Bandit position do for West Virginia?
- 45:49So let's start with with the actual defense and I can kind of
- 45:52break down with the band it does.
- 45:54So the defense is really a multiple front 34 base so they
- 46:02run, they'll run the 34 alignment.
- 46:05They'll have a 33 stack alignment.
- 46:07They'll have a 42 alignment so you're going to see various
- 46:12fronts but their base is kind of a Hybrid 34.
- 46:17And what Bend areas kaolians position is, is the Bandit,
- 46:21which is a hybrid, 34 edge, meaning that, you know, if
- 46:26they're, if they're front is the 42, he's either a stand-up or
- 46:30hand in the dirt defensive end. If it is the 34 base, he's more
- 46:35of a traditional Edge rusher outside linebacker.
- 46:40He will be kind of the backer. If We're translating it to hokey
- 46:47speak here, he'd be the backer in the 42 alignment.
- 46:50So there's a lot of things that he can do.
- 46:54In this in this alignment, but he's really the hybrid player up
- 46:58front. That enables them to kind of
- 47:01have that multiple front and not really skip a beat All right.
- 47:07What have you seen from him on tape?
- 47:09I mean is he is he disruptive as he better in coverage as you
- 47:12better play more the true backer and position the for to these
- 47:16versatile buddies that he's much better when he's attacking
- 47:19forward then he is in coverage. Okay so even if he is at that
- 47:24linebacker in the three threes at the linebacker, if he's in
- 47:27the for to weave on the edge, He likes to attack at the line of
- 47:33scrimmage and get tackles for loss.
- 47:37That's that's his bread and butter, but he does pretty good,
- 47:40especially when he's, he has to do limited things in coverage,
- 47:43like, cover the flat, he does that very well.
- 47:47He's got enough athleticism to stick with a tight end in that
- 47:49space and stick with a running back in that space gets a
- 47:53little, not, not 100% great when it's not Zone.
- 47:58When it's, when he's locked up deeper down the The field in a
- 48:01man situation but he doesn't have to do that a ton with the
- 48:05way they kind of scheme for him. Got it.
- 48:09Alright. Now let's take a look at Scotty
- 48:11young who plays the spear position 510 207 pounds 3 star.
- 48:17He was an Arizona Wildcat transfer so West Coast to East
- 48:22Coast. Very good 2019 because he had to
- 48:25sit out 2020 with the trains for twenty nineteen, sixty six,
- 48:28tackles two and a half tackles for loss and then Shin I guess
- 48:34it's Wayne spear first and then what you think from Scotty on
- 48:36tape spear the best way to think of it is very similar to the
- 48:43Whip and what the whip used to be.
- 48:45You're talking about a hybrid safety linebacker that likes to
- 48:50play in the box. So it depending on what what
- 48:52front they're going is going to vary whether he's playing more
- 48:56of a nickel type role of safety type role or a true in the Box.
- 49:01Linebacker type role. But those two positions, the
- 49:04Bandit in the spear combined is kind of what what allows them to
- 49:08to go. Those multiple fronts because
- 49:10they can kind of switch the alignments up and really not
- 49:12miss a beat. So you got to have versatile
- 49:15players at those two positions and Scotty young is a versatile
- 49:18player. Definitely a guy that likes to
- 49:20hit makes good plays in the running game, probably a little
- 49:26stronger in the running game than he is in coverage.
- 49:29Similar to cow and But he's not a liability in coverage, but he
- 49:33will get beat on occasion, but definitely in the Run game, he's
- 49:39kind of the spill guy. He's the guy that, you know,
- 49:42when they wash it outside, he comes in and cleans it up.
- 49:46Alright, tape. You know, you know, is the tape.
- 49:53Average, above average. Would you want to be above
- 49:58average player? Okay.
- 49:59Yeah he's definitely above average player.
- 50:02More Mega said he will. He will he will occasionally get
- 50:05beaten coverage but not anymore than, you know.
- 50:08Shamari Connor does but he's kind of not quite the hitter
- 50:11that Shamari is but definitely is good in terms of tackling and
- 50:15coming up and making the play, like he is.
- 50:17Alright? So we've kind of looked at a
- 50:19defensive lineman, / linebacker, we kind of looked at a T. /
- 50:23linebacker. Let's look at the two safeties
- 50:26because me, and you took some time and looked on tape with
- 50:30these two guys. And if there's anywhere, I think
- 50:33we can attack its with these two Gentlemen.
- 50:35Let's start with the free safety, Sean my home. 511 200
- 50:39pounds 3 star had offers from UK and Cincinnati, when he came out
- 50:45his 2020. Season 53, tackles two tackles
- 50:48for loss in an interception. But Brown, we looked at the
- 50:51tape, it was Either good and solid or yeah, yeah, very feast
- 50:58or famine. He had a couple good plays where
- 51:03he was, right? Where you need to be in
- 51:04coverage. Wouldn't made the play?
- 51:05And then there was there was one play where he was in a cover to
- 51:10Lost leverage just had a had a big clean run for a touchdown
- 51:14for one of the Maryland receivers on a corner route that
- 51:18probably should have been only been a 25-yard gain.
- 51:22Not a 50-yard touchdown. Yeah.
- 51:25So It's really very much. Both of these safeties are kind
- 51:30of feast or famine. They make solid plays, they come
- 51:34up, make big plays, good fits in the running game and then you
- 51:38know they'll have a handful of plays a game where you're just
- 51:41scratching your head like how did you let that happen?
- 51:43Yeah, you know with with the way we're going to talk about the
- 51:48other Alonso die in just a second but with the play that
- 51:50you show with Mahone and a couple other plays, it's he's
- 51:53essentially It's not significantly out of position,
- 51:58but if a, the right play is called and he's where he is on
- 52:02some of those, it's a massive game, it was a it was a
- 52:06situational thing. It was very much a, he misread
- 52:10the situation, didn't get enough depth wasn't where he needed to
- 52:13be in relationship to the hash and that gave too much of a, of
- 52:18a window to throw the ball towards the sideline.
- 52:21Yeah. All right, let's talk about
- 52:23Alonzo with that 510. In 1986 2020.
- 52:27Really good season. 66 tackles two interceptions in a forced.
- 52:32Fumble. I don't I feel like you looked
- 52:36at his place more than me. I remember the Mahone plays?
- 52:39What do we see out of a die in the good and the bad?
- 52:43So the good is that he is a very willing tackle tackle, he will
- 52:47get up in there in the box and make plays in the running game.
- 52:52The problem I saw was some inconsistency with his run fits
- 52:56a couple times kind of getting kind of approaching the box but
- 53:00then kind of getting caught in the wash and not getting to the
- 53:04fit to make the play. Was he was that that running
- 53:07play. We looked at where he
- 53:08essentially followed the linebacker versus going to the
- 53:10correct Gap, that's correct. Yeah.
- 53:14There was a, there was a couple other plays that were similar to
- 53:16that but that that one definitely stood out.
- 53:19Well, when we looked, if he was a little bit more patient with
- 53:23we're especially considering where the gaps were opening in
- 53:27the blocking scheme, if he was a little bit more patient, he
- 53:29would have been able to make the play there and make the tackle,
- 53:31even if it was only for, you know, five to eight yard gain,
- 53:34turned out to be about a 25 or 30 yard gain on that running
- 53:37play. If I'm not mistaken.
- 53:39All right. Just, you know, the difference
- 53:41between doing the fundamental things, right?
- 53:44Yeah, and when you we saw that play, Brian, I had the
- 53:47flashbacks to you and see because it looked like how do we
- 53:50looked against you and see in 2020 where guys were just in the
- 53:55wrong spots? Massive gaps opening and again
- 54:00you kind of pointed out it's like he's got a hesitate and I
- 54:04think it goes back to what you said he's willing to look for
- 54:06contact and sometimes with guys like that you see it.
- 54:11They're looking for the contact versus the hesitation and fine.
- 54:14Adding where to go and that case it look like he trusted his
- 54:18instincts and not his eyes and his eyes told him something
- 54:21completely different than his instincts told him and sometimes
- 54:25instincts are big, but some guys play with instincts and that's
- 54:29good. If they're if their instincts
- 54:30are consistent but sometimes when they're not you're going to
- 54:34have yourself out of position on these plays and that can that
- 54:37can create some big gains if things aren't flush across the
- 54:41front six or seven there, Very true.
- 54:44Alright, so that's going to close no.
- 54:46The enemy on the defensive side of the ball, as we did last
- 54:51week, we have a hokey version. This is the Hokey gamma version
- 54:55we've seen Alpha. We've seen beta.
- 54:57We are at Gamma and Brian. We're going to start with the
- 55:00offense. Watching the Maryland tape.
- 55:05Yep. A it made you happy because I
- 55:09think you know, these are in our Arsenal, what do we need to run
- 55:14the damn screens run? The damn screens multiple, we
- 55:19should be able to scream and short pass, this team all day.
- 55:24I know we're talking about we want to get more things involved
- 55:27in the in the passing game. The best way to get things
- 55:30involved in the passing game is give Braxton some easy reads
- 55:35early in the game just like you did against you NC and get his
- 55:38ass comfortable. Yep.
- 55:40And get them two guys who can make things happen.
- 55:43Blackshear trait, a don't be afraid to give Caleb Smith a
- 55:47chance, don't be afraid to give potentially Keshawn King, one of
- 55:52the screens that were set up in the Maryland game.
- 55:54I mean, it the way their defense, their defense looks so
- 55:59unprepared for it. Yeah, they ran a tunnel that
- 56:02went for big yards. They ran a tight end throwback
- 56:04that went for big yards. They ran a running back.
- 56:07Bringing that went for pretty good.
- 56:08Yardage couple flares that went the win for pretty decent
- 56:13yardage so we'll be able to do some short passing game.
- 56:15Things against this defense, we need to be consistent with it
- 56:19and we need to Pepper it in early to get Braxton comfortable
- 56:23with the game plan. Absolutely.
- 56:26Now, the second part of this puzzle is something.
- 56:31We saw one time versus Middle, Tennessee, State.
- 56:33It was the jet Suite game. City with Brian Tuesday after
- 56:40afternoon and Tuesday afternoon. Yeah, and he's showing me some
- 56:44of the plays and, The Motions completely screwed.
- 56:51They're essentially, their second level up.
- 56:54We saw it, we already talked about a die making mistakes.
- 56:57When you give them the window dressing and removing players,
- 57:01they are going to the wrong gaps.
- 57:03If for nothing else, even if we only hand the ball off, three
- 57:07times on a Jet Sweep, giving that motion is going to give
- 57:10space. To our running game on the
- 57:14inside, right? Ron.
- 57:16Yeah, yeah. We talked about the Jet Sweep
- 57:18All the Time. Loved it or hated we've seen.
- 57:22We've seen that. It's an efficient play.
- 57:24I know that James Mitchell got hurt on the Jet Sweep, so we're
- 57:28not going to talk about that, but we need to talk about is
- 57:32that consistently. We've done good things with the
- 57:34jet Suite, it helps open up Avenues and alleys to run in our
- 57:39offense, it does a good job of kind of Getting outside of the
- 57:43box with the ball quickly. As long as we can get that Ali
- 57:48block properly. It's a pretty good play.
- 57:51We've had a lot of success in the Red Zone.
- 57:53I think this these linebackers and the the spear in particular
- 57:58can be influenced by the window dressing that we like to use.
- 58:02So I'm hoping that we take advantage of that with the Jet
- 58:04Sweep and some other motion that we run.
- 58:09But Brian, what what has to happen with our quarterback?
- 58:14He's gonna have to pull the damn trigger on some mid-level
- 58:16passes, you know, I don't know if we necessarily need to take
- 58:19the ball, deep down the field, a lot against this team and
- 58:23especially without James Mitchell, I don't see us
- 58:25attacking deep down the middle of the field against this team
- 58:28consistently. But I what I would like to see
- 58:31is us working. The mid-level passing game
- 58:36inside the numbers, and inside the hash, Is to keep them
- 58:40honest. So we can still have that short
- 58:43passing game to get outside the hashes in the numbers, to take
- 58:47advantage of their weakness. Yep.
- 58:49In, we've always known how risk adverse they want our
- 58:53quarterbacks to be. And, and luckily, for what they
- 58:58said, he talked about, you know, we value protecting the ball,
- 59:01but sometimes you've got to throw the ball.
- 59:04I enjoyed hearing him say that because we think it as fans.
- 59:08Yeah. It's cool to protect the ball
- 59:10but sometimes you got to throw it and when your head coach is
- 59:12saying that it's almost like a trigger, right?
- 59:14I should be a trigger for Braxton Burmeister protected,
- 59:17don't throw anything stupid by all means.
- 59:19Yeah, as you said a little earlier Braun, you can't wait
- 59:23for it to come completely open. You have to anticipate that when
- 59:27Trey runs a 10-yard in, he's going to get the ten yard in.
- 59:31He's going to be this guy. Put it where he can run with it.
- 59:35That's your job. Yeah, I would much rather brag.
- 59:39Burmeister take a calculated risk with the ball.
- 59:41While the pocket is still clean. Then go on the run and try to
- 59:46get rid of it as someone's bearing down on him in a
- 59:50scramble drill, right? Yeah, I would much rather a
- 59:55clean pocket where you can step into the throw and it's a
- 59:58calculated risk, where more than likely, it's either a catcher.
- 1:00:01An incompletion right, true? And we, and we've had a
- 1:00:04relatively clean pocket. We've only given up two sacks
- 1:00:07and two games. Yeah.
- 1:00:09And there's because if some of that is Braxton being Elusive
- 1:00:11and getting out, but some mean some of it is just we hold the
- 1:00:15pocket for long enough for him to at least get rid of the ball
- 1:00:18or get the ball down, feel right?
- 1:00:20And and it's not going. Alright.
- 1:00:23Brandade we've got actually get the ball down field to the
- 1:00:26receiver on time, within the framework of the play call.
- 1:00:31Yep. We can't just be top top, top of
- 1:00:35the drop, it's not there. Alright, so now I'm going
- 1:00:39Scramble a little bit roll outside, and try to get rid of
- 1:00:42it. Downfield to Caleb Smith, trying
- 1:00:45to get open or James Mitchell, trying to get up.
- 1:00:47Like it's, we can get some big plays that way at some point,
- 1:00:54but we've got to be consistent with the passing game because
- 1:00:56they're just they're just looking for for those things
- 1:00:59that we're being inconsistent with because they're taking it
- 1:01:01away in the first couple seconds and then bracks is just going
- 1:01:05away from it. Yep, very true.
- 1:01:08All right. One One last piece.
- 1:01:09We're looking for this week. Is someone Whether it be Trey
- 1:01:16Turner, Savion Robinson, Raheem Blackshear, somebody has to get
- 1:01:22in all 100 yards, all purposed, yep.
- 1:01:25Against this defense. And what we have seen on the
- 1:01:28tape and how they reacted against Maryland, I'd like one.
- 1:01:34I think there's a potential for to, if we execute our game plan,
- 1:01:38at the highest level and I, and we have the guys who can do it.
- 1:01:44It's just Get them the ball. Yeah, I think I think probably
- 1:01:49Blackshear and Taylor Robinson are probably the most likely
- 1:01:51candidates for this, although the the wild-card being tray
- 1:01:55with with any sort of Jet Sweep, that he takes her big yardage
- 1:01:59that he can actually do. Yep.
- 1:02:02I'd like to see one of those three go over 100.
- 1:02:05Hopefully, two of them. Two of them would mean big, big
- 1:02:10things. All right, Ron, let's look at
- 1:02:13the defense real quick and let's talk about that.
- 1:02:18Secondary you already talked about the way they like to run
- 1:02:21the pick plays. What what do we have to do this
- 1:02:24week against them greed? React.
- 1:02:27Make sure that we're passing off our our men properly.
- 1:02:31So we don't have any big gaps for them to throw a big windows.
- 1:02:34I should say for them to throw the ball into We probably won't
- 1:02:39go man a lot especially when they send those two wide
- 1:02:43receivers to the same side just because of the way they like to
- 1:02:46run those knife routes to that side.
- 1:02:52But again the sound keep everything in front of you, make
- 1:02:56the tackle All right, and something.
- 1:03:01We've alluded to earlier already another big piece of the gamma
- 1:03:04version for the defense is going to be get Gyarados off the spot.
- 1:03:10We've already talked about how he's not a runner.
- 1:03:13And we've also discussed looking at the tape that he's not gray
- 1:03:17good at moving around in the pocket.
- 1:03:19So if you move him and get him without setting his feet, It's
- 1:03:23the, it's what you do in college.
- 1:03:26You make some bad decisions. Yeah.
- 1:03:29And we're gonna have to do a better job than we did against
- 1:03:32Bailey Hockman. Last week of doing that.
- 1:03:34I think we can definitely pull that off.
- 1:03:36We saw that Middle Tennessee was running a lot of a lot of help
- 1:03:41to kind of keep some of that in check there.
- 1:03:44I don't think that West Virginia will keep his many in to kind of
- 1:03:48keep that protection. There, we need to get consistent
- 1:03:51pressure with. For though to kind of keep
- 1:03:54everything in check and if we can do that and we can get Diggy
- 1:03:57throwing either before he's ready or making an ill-advised
- 1:04:01throw in traffic. That's going to bode well for
- 1:04:03us. It absolutely is Prime.
- 1:04:07And again when you see when we saw a couple of his pics they
- 1:04:12were ugly picks. It wasn't like it was a
- 1:04:14beautiful Beautiful thing cam cop in this up tonight, Thinkin
- 1:04:21similar to US versus UNC. We cannot let them score early
- 1:04:27right now. The way the offense is playing,
- 1:04:28I absolutely 100% agree with that.
- 1:04:32If we get down, we have not seen our offense hitting a year where
- 1:04:36he can pop off 14 or 21 points in the in the course of one
- 1:04:40quarter. Brian let's go to the last piece
- 1:04:44here. And I want you to say it for the
- 1:04:47people in the back. Brian.
- 1:04:49You have said, we have to be Gap sound.
- 1:04:52So what do you want to sound Gap?
- 1:04:54Sound. We also need good safety run.
- 1:04:59Fits. Always good safety run fits and
- 1:05:03we've seen it pretty consistently the first two
- 1:05:06games, right? We can play has been really
- 1:05:09good, especially in the Run game and the short pass game.
- 1:05:11We need more of that because they will test us.
- 1:05:15Yep. And the good news about that
- 1:05:17even more. So looks like he on to Jenkins,
- 1:05:21probably going to be a full go on, if not a daily, did a very
- 1:05:26good job in his absence last week.
- 1:05:29Yeah. So, you know, Know what we got
- 1:05:33to do that, we've got to make sure they can't run the ball
- 1:05:36because if they can't run the ball, it bodes better for us.
- 1:05:42All right, Braun. We've got some thoughts from the
- 1:05:45tear down. Some listener predictions.
- 1:05:46We got a couple out here tonight.
- 1:05:48So before we give our predictions, let's hear theirs.
- 1:05:5634:24, Virginia Tech. We need to Arch.
- 1:06:01JJ, Singleton scores going to be 31:17 Hokies, and we're going to
- 1:06:06have to passing touchdowns YouTube.
- 1:06:11All right. Jay Jay's, got his throwing for
- 1:06:13to passing touchdowns, that's going to be.
- 1:06:16That sounds like that'll be a pretty good game for for Braxton
- 1:06:19there. If you can pull that off, get to
- 1:06:20passing touchdowns hopefully get over 250 yards through the air,
- 1:06:25that would be nice to see and tally, always wants the orange.
- 1:06:30So Fact that all the orange bring all the arms, all the
- 1:06:36orange also predicting a win. They already say 3817.
- 1:06:41Yeah. Big blowout, big blowout.
- 1:06:44I Braun. Well it's our turn now man.
- 1:06:48You want me to do the honors? Yeah, good.
- 1:06:51All right. I think that we're going to go
- 1:06:54into Morgantown with a little bit of fire under our ass.
- 1:06:57We're going to come out. We're going to score first.
- 1:07:00We're going to lean on our defense.
- 1:07:04We're going to be opportunistic with putting points on the
- 1:07:06board. We're going to be balanced,
- 1:07:09despite not really putting the ball down the field very much.
- 1:07:13We're going to work them in the short passing game working with
- 1:07:15the screen game. I think it's a good game on both
- 1:07:18sides of the ball, even if it's not standing out on the offense,
- 1:07:23I think we end up 2724, Virginia Tech, and Brian goes to 7:24 V T
- 1:07:34and now it's my turn just a few weeks ago.
- 1:07:40I predicted this game as a loss in our season preview predicted
- 1:07:45Carolina is a win. And as of right now, I'm not
- 1:07:49coming off of it, we have not shown them passing game to go
- 1:07:53into a hostile environment. And beat a team that does have
- 1:07:58some weapons that can score some touchdowns.
- 1:08:02They lost a Maryland by six points.
- 1:08:04They turn the ball over over 4 plus X.
- 1:08:08I don't think they're going to turn it over 4 plus X against
- 1:08:10us. I think they're going to be a
- 1:08:11little more conservative with it.
- 1:08:13I think us going there with some holes in our offense.
- 1:08:20And they loud crowd that it's been 15 years.
- 1:08:23Since we played there, it is a nasty place to play.
- 1:08:27We Know It is Brian friends with their things happen.
- 1:08:31They'll throw liquor at you. They'll burn couches all sorts
- 1:08:34of crap so I think her liquor bottles that don't have liquor
- 1:08:38in them. Sometimes they have urine and
- 1:08:39I'm shout out. Dwight Vic.
- 1:08:41Yep, battery he's full beer cans but I think it's going to be a
- 1:08:48closely contested game and I'm going to go unfortunately I'm
- 1:08:51going to say 2827 West Virginia. oh, You know, that's a tough
- 1:08:58one. It's gonna be a heartbreaker.
- 1:09:02So you predicted us having having one last possession, and
- 1:09:05just can't get it. In field goal range.
- 1:09:06Is that kind of what you're, what you're seeing or or is it
- 1:09:10or is it a late? A late touchdown to make it make
- 1:09:13it close. I don't think it'll be, I think
- 1:09:17it's going to be one of those. We get the ball later in the
- 1:09:19game. We can't convert anything, they
- 1:09:22get the ball and eventually the Deep.
- 1:09:24It's going to be the old hokey. He's from our youth, we're going
- 1:09:29to do, we're going to have opportunities to do big things
- 1:09:33on offense. We're going to screw it up.
- 1:09:34We're going to wear out our defense and eventually in the
- 1:09:36fourth quarter, they're going to get the lead and we're not going
- 1:09:39to call back. Now, if you ask me what, I put
- 1:09:44my mortgage payment on this know because I do think we have the
- 1:09:48talent and if you want to know how how we do it is, we it's
- 1:09:53going to be similar to UNC is Cam said we jump early. if you
- 1:09:57tell me, we are up 14 after the first 20 minutes, Then I think
- 1:10:03we're going to win the game. Yeah, but I don't foresee us
- 1:10:07getting into some sort of shootout with this team?
- 1:10:09No, I if it's a shootout, I don't we to me, we have no
- 1:10:12chance, but if we get up early and can do exactly what we did
- 1:10:17against UNC and start leaning slowing down their run and
- 1:10:21forced into g into bad throws. Then we have a chance But this
- 1:10:26is also going to be a hostile environment.
- 1:10:29They're going to be screaming their freaking lungs out at us
- 1:10:32the second we touch the field so you're not going to have that
- 1:10:36sense of calm to get down the field.
- 1:10:38You know. Listen I'm hoping I'm sitting
- 1:10:41here and about how many hours is it?
- 1:10:4572 hours braund. Listen.
- 1:10:50You've got to be a realist. I'm a realist.
- 1:10:53If you if you if you think we're going to win every single game.
- 1:10:56Go to Vegas, put it put put all of your savings that we're going
- 1:10:59to go 12 and oh yeah well he predicted 9 & 3.
- 1:11:03Yeah. We as we definitely bring the
- 1:11:05realness here, we're not we're not going to sugarcoat it right.
- 1:11:08Run first game with you said we're gonna lose to UNC, he does
- 1:11:12help your inhale to come on here Friday night when I love being
- 1:11:16wrong. When I when I pick a girl's
- 1:11:18boobs, that's my favorite time. I love being wrong too and I
- 1:11:22hope I'm wrong on this one. I really hope.
- 1:11:25That by about 130. I can sit back and just put my
- 1:11:29feet up because we blow the doors off on the slight.
- 1:11:33Well, this ain't a game anymore. I'm really glad I'm wrong.
- 1:11:35So I'm hoping about 72 hours from now.
- 1:11:38I get to sit here and say I was wrong and it's the happiest I am
- 1:11:42when I'm wrong. All right, Brian.
- 1:11:46There are a lot of other games this weekend and our Saturday.
- 1:11:50Pickens and Brian, believe it or not.
- 1:11:52We and you bald last weekend, Brian, six and four got his
- 1:11:57record to 511 and 11. I went seven and three and went
- 1:12:03from three and nine to ten and twelve and one Fell Swoop
- 1:12:08weekend. So and I think the games we put
- 1:12:12together, the only game we lost was was we got Ohio State.
- 1:12:16We got the Iowa game, right? We picked four games.
- 1:12:20Exactly the same. We were three in one.
- 1:12:23Yeah. So when we agree, you might want
- 1:12:26to take some of that to the bank.
- 1:12:28If we agree to take it, take it to Vegas.
- 1:12:30If you, you know, if you want to go follow my pics, you might, as
- 1:12:35well just flip a coin at this point.
- 1:12:38I'm 500 on the nose through two weeks.
- 1:12:40So we'll see how that builds over the rest of the year, but
- 1:12:45Going to get into this first one, buddy.
- 1:12:47Let's go to it, man. Since you are leading, you have
- 1:12:50the honor sir. We look at Friday night,
- 1:12:52Louisville vs. UCF, UCF Lane seven points.
- 1:12:58Yeah, I'm still not a believer in this Louisville team.
- 1:13:03I feel like the pieces that they've lost just have not been
- 1:13:06been replaced at this point. I think UCF is kind of their
- 1:13:11good team and I think they can, they can probably get them that
- 1:13:14I think that's going to be Be UCF, probably by 10.
- 1:13:17So I'll take UCF in this one. Yeah, I'm actually with you on
- 1:13:22this one. After the Way, Louisville looked
- 1:13:25against Ole Miss and then last week, you know, they played
- 1:13:29Eastern Kentucky. You know, the kernels out there,
- 1:13:33they only 1:30 to 3. And it was a similar game to
- 1:13:37what Virginia Tech look like. They were only up 2:40 at
- 1:13:40halftime, so not a like not a overly dominant impressive.
- 1:13:45I've gained against an even lower level of competition in
- 1:13:48the Hokies, so I'm with you give me UCF lay the seven, I think it
- 1:13:53might be uglier than the 10-year talking about Brian.
- 1:13:56I think Scott Satterfield officially gets on the hot seat
- 1:14:01in just a few days. Put it in one of the sea, put
- 1:14:03him on the scene, almost. All right, let's go down.
- 1:14:07Miami. Michigan State.
- 1:14:09Miami Lane, six and a half. I'll start with this one.
- 1:14:11Brian. I think Miami gets back on track
- 1:14:17this week, okay? Thank you know, with what
- 1:14:21Michigan State likes to do. Michigan State, out of the gate.
- 1:14:23Very good against Northwestern Northwestern ever.
- 1:14:26You don't know what they are until about week six.
- 1:14:30Yep. Because sometimes, they'll come,
- 1:14:32you know, will couple years ago they lost to Duke and they ended
- 1:14:34up winning nine games and it was just like houses the same team.
- 1:14:39So I'm going to take Miami in this game, I don't think six and
- 1:14:42a half is enough for In state I see this as a 10-point game.
- 1:14:46Probably 3121. Miami pulling away late.
- 1:14:51Yeah, I'm actually right there with you buddy.
- 1:14:53I think this is this is the perfect game for Miami to get,
- 1:14:57right? Because it's good of enough
- 1:14:59competition that they are going to get the focus going into it.
- 1:15:05But at the same time, talent-wise top to bottom, they
- 1:15:08have more talent and I think he finally play up to that level of
- 1:15:12talent this week and It done against Michigan State.
- 1:15:17All right, Brown roll up into the next one.
- 1:15:18Here Temple, BC, BC, land 16. Temple.
- 1:15:31And it is solely because the quarterback and it's solely
- 1:15:33because Temple seems to play up to better competition when they
- 1:15:38get some of these matchups of late in the last few years.
- 1:15:42So I'm going to pick Temple here.
- 1:15:46Um I would say that but not in this case temples got their
- 1:15:52doors blown off by Rutgers just a couple weeks ago and last week
- 1:15:57they played Akron and that game was tied at halftime.
- 1:16:00They pulled Away late. So I'm gonna even with a
- 1:16:03different quarterback. I think BC is going to blow the
- 1:16:06doors off Temple, not enough tape yet to understand what
- 1:16:09they're doing. So give me BC lay the 16 on
- 1:16:13that. Temple is my upset Alert in the
- 1:16:17ACC this week, true upset? Yeah, yeah, I'm feeling good
- 1:16:22about that. All right, Brian, this is, I
- 1:16:26don't know how we're going to pick this game and I've got to
- 1:16:28leave it really Florida. State vs Wake Forest, weak
- 1:16:33forces, Lane five and a half. Part of my brain looks at Notre
- 1:16:39Dame game versus Florida State in thinking, even though it's
- 1:16:42not as a good of Notre Dame team as it's been the last few years,
- 1:16:45there's still a good team. If that team shows up, they're
- 1:16:49going to be tweaked by 14 points.
- 1:16:51The other part of my brain turns on this is what it says.
- 1:16:54Did you see the Jacksonville State game?
- 1:16:56Hey, Curtis. Did you see the Jacksonville
- 1:16:58State and especially they didn't fire him.
- 1:17:04But any defensive coordinator who chooses to run like a cover
- 1:17:07one, the last play of the game. When the opponents near
- 1:17:11Midfield, I don't know what you're worth your weight in.
- 1:17:15She's not even near Midfield who really like the 32, or some
- 1:17:19shit. Know there were 44 years.
- 1:17:22They were at the place where you don't still play a cover one.
- 1:17:26I don't give a shit if they were at the 20 seriously.
- 1:17:30You're not going to put at least three to four guys.
- 1:17:32Back at the 10-yard. Deadline.
- 1:17:35Well, you put all your deep guys deep, but then you drop,
- 1:17:37everybody else kind of at that level where they can make the
- 1:17:40play, if he gets past past the past fifty, right?
- 1:17:44They can make the play before they get the field goal range.
- 1:17:46I mean, it was six seconds. That's going to be a quick ass
- 1:17:49route to get 25 yards and six seconds, right?
- 1:17:55True, it couldn't have happened. If you put four to five, guys,
- 1:17:58back at the 10-yard line. They win the game.
- 1:18:02I'm going to go here. I think Florida State's going to
- 1:18:04win this game. I think Florida state is going
- 1:18:11to win this game, so give me the points.
- 1:18:18Give me the points in Florida State.
- 1:18:23Yeah, I'm going to take Week. Jacksonville State broke me.
- 1:18:31I'm not picking the Seminoles until they prove me wrong in the
- 1:18:36other direction. Alright, alright.
- 1:18:40Brown will Tennessee state? I'm not, I don't think about
- 1:18:45that. I don't know about that one.
- 1:18:48All right, Brian, Georgia Tech, Clemson.
- 1:18:50It would be closer than if they showed up the way they showed up
- 1:18:52last weekend. Be closer than the experts would
- 1:18:54say. It wouldn't be close to the
- 1:18:56expert. They wouldn't cover the 20 and a
- 1:18:57half. I'll say that right now.
- 1:18:59He'll know why Braun Georgia Tech Clemson you ready for the
- 1:19:03line? Yeah, it is Elaine 28 and a half
- 1:19:08point. Yeah, that's telling me that
- 1:19:14Jeff Sims is not playing this game and I will trust it.
- 1:19:18Give me Clemson, Clemson legal limit, I think.
- 1:19:24Well, remember the game last year 73. 7.0 got to beat up on a
- 1:19:31lesser opponent. Last week, they are going to
- 1:19:33beat the shit out of Georgia Tech.
- 1:19:35I mean, I think I'm seeing this game.
- 1:19:37Something like 5614. Okay.
- 1:19:40Like bye. I beat the dog mean.
- 1:19:42Georgia Tech. That's about.
- 1:19:43That's about where I see you, too.
- 1:19:45I think thinking they could definitely take you to, you
- 1:19:48know, 55 scores, 35, right point with the next one.
- 1:19:53We got here. Brian is we've got Duke and
- 1:19:57we've got Northwestern. This is in Durham, do you
- 1:20:01ghislaine Or Duke is getting three points on North
- 1:20:06Northwestern Lane points. And this is just such a weird
- 1:20:11game because we saw Northwestern they lost to Michigan State.
- 1:20:17You know, Michigan state county. Kept him at arm's length.
- 1:20:20They get Indiana State the next week you expect, okay.
- 1:20:22They're going to blow the doors off 24-6.
- 1:20:25It wasn't ugly. Do you go on the other hand went
- 1:20:28down the Charlotte and an uprising.
- 1:20:31Charlotte team basically had that game.
- 1:20:33One lost in the And barely, we saw the way they start against
- 1:20:36North Carolina A&T, and it looks like they're gonna lose another
- 1:20:40one, and then they come back in the second quarter Beyond and
- 1:20:42just blow the doors, off, A&T know, these two teams.
- 1:20:47I have no clue what they are. They had I have no clue and when
- 1:20:52I have no clue I start going to, you know, history the last few
- 1:20:58years have been rough for Duke, the last few years Northwestern
- 1:21:03had a good year. And then they had a bad year
- 1:21:04than last year. They had a really good year.
- 1:21:06I think Northwestern wins this game by touchdown.
- 1:21:09So I will lay the three points with Northwestern.
- 1:21:15Give me Duke in the points and I don't like it at all but I just
- 1:21:21I don't know what to expect from these two teams and I will go,
- 1:21:26you know, ACC this way I'll say hey, we need to finally get one
- 1:21:32need to kind of time. We have had a ton of luck in the
- 1:21:35non-conference against Power 5 opponents, this year so far.
- 1:21:39So let's try to go out there and get one, very true, just had an
- 1:21:43update a line. And UVA UNC.
- 1:21:46Was it nine a few hours ago. It is now at eight so UNC Lane
- 1:21:51eight points. What do you got in the UVA UNC
- 1:21:55game in Chapel Hill? This is make or break for you
- 1:22:00and sees hopes of winning the coastal, right?
- 1:22:03It is you can't, you can't fall behind UVA and Virginia Tech.
- 1:22:07Bye-bye, half-game, a heads up game in the, in the coastal.
- 1:22:12This early, you can't have two conference losses in your
- 1:22:15schedule. This early, I think UNC is
- 1:22:18focused. I think they come out quick, and
- 1:22:22I think it's a tight game. But I think I think UNC covers.
- 1:22:28I think it's a 10-point 10 point game.
- 1:22:30I think I think UVA is just they haven't been tested yet and I
- 1:22:33think that unc's focus is going to be where it needs to be
- 1:22:38right. I'm sure like me, you're around
- 1:22:43Saturday morning, hanging around the house, having a cup of
- 1:22:46coffee, maybe eating some Pop-Tarts for breakfast and that
- 1:22:51game was played against Illinois.
- 1:22:54Yep. The way Brandon Armstrong was
- 1:22:57throwing those outside passes. If they were Ducks, they were
- 1:23:01Ducks. I hope he is still throwing
- 1:23:03those in Scott Stadium. Come Thanksgiving weekend.
- 1:23:08If he, if they do that game plan and they try to attack the
- 1:23:11outsides, I think he's throwing it at least two, maybe three
- 1:23:16interceptions? Yeah.
- 1:23:19We just haven't like you just said it.
- 1:23:21We haven't seen UVA play any quality competition.
- 1:23:25We saw right now, we saw UNC, you know, big win last week, and
- 1:23:31we saw him against us against what we're seeing right now.
- 1:23:35Is a very good Virginia Tech defense.
- 1:23:39Only boat Corrales is out. So they're starting to get
- 1:23:42healthier. And I'm sort of teetering
- 1:23:46between, is this going to be a 10-point game?
- 1:23:48We're just going to look a little uglier on paper.
- 1:23:50I think, either way I think, um, c-can cover eight points in this
- 1:23:54game and it's one of those games.
- 1:23:58It's a it's like a win-win lose-lose.
- 1:24:02You wish they both could lose mean.
- 1:24:05Would that be nice? That'd be nice.
- 1:24:07But either way, we're going to hell.
- 1:24:08If they all get enough covid then it'll happen because the
- 1:24:11ACC says, if you have to cancel because of covid-19, We're gonna
- 1:24:15go down the LabCorp tomorrow and get my everybody has code.
- 1:24:19They both have to lose now. I think we all say it's the win
- 1:24:23win is if if you and see when they're effectively out of the
- 1:24:27coastal picture, if you know, if UVA loses you know, and in the
- 1:24:37manner I think it's going to happen.
- 1:24:38I think effectively they get put to bed is okay.
- 1:24:40Those first two games were just smoking mirrors.
- 1:24:43So that's the field on that run. All right, really, haven't been
- 1:24:47tested by good offense yet. Now think that's the thing is
- 1:24:52that the defense hasn't been stressed tested.
- 1:24:54Yet the defense has entrusted to put the pressure on the offense
- 1:24:59to actually have to do something exactly what not playing loose.
- 1:25:04All right. Brian going here to my pretty
- 1:25:08big ranked games at the end here.
- 1:25:10We're going to start with auburn Penn State.
- 1:25:13In Happy Valley, it is going to be a white out on Saturday night
- 1:25:17Penn, State's Lane Six, Penn State already battled tested,
- 1:25:22with the Wisconsin game. Where to me?
- 1:25:24They still should have lost I do think Auburn's got a good
- 1:25:28defense, but I think Auburn's going to get a shell shock
- 1:25:32Auburn. Has literally played no one this
- 1:25:34year. No one.
- 1:25:37And unfortunately for them they have to go on the road to a
- 1:25:43super hostile environment and it's to a place, they normally
- 1:25:47don't go. And this is where my peace
- 1:25:50comes. Why I don't like neutral site
- 1:25:52games because when you have to go to a Out of conference team.
- 1:25:57You don't normally play. Everything's different right
- 1:26:00Ron? Yep.
- 1:26:02Oh well, they play in Alabama. It's 100,000 people.
- 1:26:04There, they allow those kids go to Alabama with multiple times
- 1:26:10in their careers. They know where they're going to
- 1:26:12stay. They know the meals, they're
- 1:26:14going to eat. They know what the locker rooms
- 1:26:16look like to know how the fields, feel they know where the
- 1:26:18noise comes from. They know the fans are their
- 1:26:20fans are, they are going into a stadium.
- 1:26:23They've never been in there going further up north Me a
- 1:26:26check on what State College weather going to be on Saturday
- 1:26:29night. Temperature-wise, just just
- 1:26:33interested. What time is it?
- 1:26:437:30, it's not getting. It's going to be.
- 1:26:49About 75 and grizzly. All right, so they're not
- 1:26:54getting any sort of Chilly fall weather early.
- 1:26:57But either way, we look at it, I think Penn State wins this game
- 1:27:03because I think do you really want to get tested an
- 1:27:06environment like that for the first time this year?
- 1:27:10That's definitely not the environment.
- 1:27:11You want to go into with your first big test.
- 1:27:17It's going to definitely be loud.
- 1:27:19Whiteout is always loud about as loud as Penn State gets in the
- 1:27:24season. I'm with you on this one.
- 1:27:29I've got Penn State. I don't think it's by a ton over
- 1:27:34the spread their, I think it's, I think it's another probably
- 1:27:37about it by the 10-point game. I think kind of in the end.
- 1:27:43Penn State holds on, I think, Auburn out of the gate is Shell
- 1:27:45Shocked by the atmosphere and the town of Penn State.
- 1:27:49But they kind of their defense settles in, and they kind of
- 1:27:52make a little bit of a run late, but it's too late.
- 1:27:56Absolutely. All right, Braun, where we're
- 1:27:58going next going to be the Pac-12 after dark game, but not
- 1:28:02all Pac-12, future, big 12-member.
- 1:28:05BYU versus Arizona State. Arizona State lay in three and a
- 1:28:10half. We watch some BYU last week and
- 1:28:14we hit a little bit of the Arizona, State game.
- 1:28:16Rhyme. So, what are you thinking for
- 1:28:17this one? I think this is going to be kind
- 1:28:22of a letdown game for BYU. I think they're still going to
- 1:28:25kind of be riding the high of last week.
- 1:28:29And I think zone is just going to kind of wear them down over
- 1:28:33time in that game. So give me his own estate in the
- 1:28:38points. All right, bronze.
- 1:28:41Going to take Zone. Estate.
- 1:28:43I'm going to go with the not so fast here.
- 1:28:45I think coming off that Victory versus Utah course and they won
- 1:28:49that game in nine years. I think the Elation I think
- 1:28:52they're going to stay in the their heads are going to be in
- 1:28:54the cloud. Do they win?
- 1:28:58I wouldn't pick this one on the money line.
- 1:29:00I think they're pretty evenly matched teams.
- 1:29:02You've got a really good quarterback in Jane Daniels at
- 1:29:05Arizona State but I think this one is going to come down to the
- 1:29:08wire. So, what I think of a game being
- 1:29:10like that, I've got to take the points just to, you know, hope
- 1:29:17the home field. I think, gives Arizona that a
- 1:29:19little bit in the end and it's like a 3130 game is almost a
- 1:29:25twins BYU. Evers.
- 1:29:28Okay. All right bro, that's one buddy.
- 1:29:31Last one, the big one. No in the small re 38b or in CBS
- 1:29:39on Saturday, I'm going to go make sure this line has not
- 1:29:43changed because it is a big line already.
- 1:29:46Make sure we can get points one way or the other, but Alabama,
- 1:29:51it did go down in the last little while here Alabama, is a
- 1:29:5414 and a half Point favorite over.
- 1:29:58Florida in the swamp. The 3:30 afternoon.
- 1:30:04Well you let the last one shit. It's such a tough thing because
- 1:30:12we know Alabama's talented. And we know Nick Saban is
- 1:30:16absolutely wonderful at creating game plans with the month.
- 1:30:20So I don't know if what we saw against Miami is the true
- 1:30:25Alabama because savings so good. When you give him a month he's
- 1:30:30gonna dissect you in every single way.
- 1:30:32If you give him time, he will eat you alive.
- 1:30:35You will. It's why the playoffs, you know.
- 1:30:39He's destroyed teams on that first weekend but 14 and a half
- 1:30:43is so So many points to lay against a home team against the
- 1:30:50raucous crowd against an athletic quarterback.
- 1:30:54Do I think Florida wins? I don't think Florida wins but I
- 1:30:58think it's going to be a more competitive game than two
- 1:31:00touchdowns, so I will take Florida. and, Take the points.
- 1:31:09Okay, I'm right there with you buddy while we agree right there
- 1:31:14with you. Yeah, I like Bama to win this
- 1:31:18but I don't like it. 14 and a half points.
- 1:31:22I think they're going into the swamp.
- 1:31:23It's going to be a rocking atmosphere.
- 1:31:27I think that's going to be. I don't think that's going to
- 1:31:30intimidate Alabama, but I think Florida is going to be kind of
- 1:31:33feed off that energy and really play.
- 1:31:36Above their ability against Alabama, at least for three
- 1:31:39quarters. Yeah, I can see that being a
- 1:31:42close game until till the fourth quarter, but I don't think they
- 1:31:45put three scores distance between the think it's going to
- 1:31:48be either somewhere between 1010 to the, the two touches.
- 1:31:52Yeah. I'm so probably probably just a
- 1:31:54just enough to for Florida. Hang onto the cover there.
- 1:31:59Yeah, over unders, 59 and a half on that game.
- 1:32:01So Vegas is seen. That game is almost like a
- 1:32:07Almost like a 3531 3521. Yeah, 30 3821 somewhere in that
- 1:32:15neighborhood which is really unusual.
- 1:32:16So yep, Brian is anything broke. Once we have been on here for
- 1:32:21the last hour and 33 minutes, I haven't seen anything crossed my
