- 0:08Good morning, family. Please turn to 1 Timothy
- 0:14chapter 6. We'll be finishing up the book today.
- 0:16Before we start there, we're going to do the
- 0:19catechism reading today from Heidelberg Catechism.
- 0:23It's question number 21. So I will read the question
- 0:28and you will read the answer. By God's grace,
- 0:32I will help to guide you through it because it's
- 0:34quite long. Okay. What is true faith? True faith
- 0:41is a sure knowledge whereby I accept as true
- 0:47all that God has revealed to us in his word.
- 0:51At the same time, it is a firm confidence that
- 0:55not only to others, but also to me. God has granted
- 1:01forgiveness of sins, everlasting righteousness
- 1:04and salvation out of mere grace, only for the
- 1:09sake of Christ's merit. The faith of the Holy
- 1:13Spirit works in my heart by the gospel. If you
- 1:19ever get a chance, please take the time to go
- 1:21through these catechisms, especially with the
- 1:24kids. There is a... a children's catechism, catechism
- 1:28for kids. Also, there's an app you can download
- 1:32called the Reform Companion. I do encourage you
- 1:34that if you don't have that, do it. There's a
- 1:38couple of other things we're going to be looking
- 1:39to work on and implement over this next year.
- 1:45One of those is family worship as we teach and
- 1:47train our people to do worship at home. And catechism
- 1:51reading is part of that process and also song
- 1:54and prayer. So these things are, I think, that
- 1:58have been missing in the church for many years
- 2:02because we've modernized it to the point that...
- 2:05We miss those opportunities to teach our children
- 2:07deep theology and the truth about God's scripture
- 2:09and his doctrine. So these are opportunities
- 2:11for you to be able to do it at home with your
- 2:13kids. It also starts to instill in them a reverence
- 2:16and an awe for the holy places. And I'm excited
- 2:21about that. Anyway, I've been praying for you
- 2:24guys, and let's pray as we dig in. Father, I
- 2:27want to thank you so much for your goodness and
- 2:29faithfulness. Thank you, Lord, for your word.
- 2:31Help us to honor and glorify you in all that
- 2:33we do. full counsel of your word is spoken, that
- 2:35your word hits upon the heart. Holy Spirit, that
- 2:39you use it to convict and to prick the soul and
- 2:44that we would respond in repentance and honor
- 2:47and glory of you. We thank you for your faithfulness.
- 2:50We thank you that your word is living and active,
- 2:52sharper than a double -edged sword. And Lord,
- 2:55you take out of us everything that is evil and
- 2:57you put in us all that is good and righteous.
- 3:01and that this work is a continual work of sanctification
- 3:05until our one day return to you. Lord, we give
- 3:10you honor, glory, and praise, and thank you for
- 3:12your faithful work in and of our lives in which
- 3:15you have destined us to be completed through
- 3:18the glory and honor of Christ. Lord, we praise
- 3:21you and we thank you. In Jesus' name, amen. So
- 3:25I'm going to start off reading in verse 3, and
- 3:27I'm going to go through the whole chapter because
- 3:29it's important that we kind of grasp what Paul's
- 3:32talking to Timothy about. As you guys know, this
- 3:34letter was written to a pastor. He was a young
- 3:37pastor, probably around 19 or 20 years old, as
- 3:40I said before. And this was really a call and
- 3:44a charge and a responsibility to Timothy as a
- 3:48man on how he should live his life as a pastor,
- 3:50not only as a pastor but at home. And so we've
- 3:53started this journey this year on biblical manhood,
- 3:57biblical womanhood, and we're going to continue
- 3:58this journey through the rest of this year and
- 4:01maybe even part of next year as we start to really
- 4:04understand what does it mean to be a man and
- 4:06what does it mean to be a woman. Because in our
- 4:08culture today, everything is antithetical to
- 4:12the Scripture and to the Gospel, and there's
- 4:15this push among the secular world to continue
- 4:18to push out. God's standard as a man and a woman
- 4:22and try to instill or institute a worldview or
- 4:28a standard that is secular and anti -God. And
- 4:30it doesn't really help our country at all. It
- 4:33actually tears it apart. I'm not going to get
- 4:37into the historicity of all those things, but
- 4:39we'll one day maybe talk about it in Bible study,
- 4:42how we've gone from... Adam and Eve, all the
- 4:45way to a world society that is embracing all
- 4:48kinds of secularism, humanism, and it's just
- 4:54really reflecting the reality of their hatred
- 4:56of God and the hatred of his things. That being
- 4:59said... Let's see what he says to Timothy in
- 5:02the rest of this chapter. He says, If anyone
- 5:05teaches a different doctrine and does not agree
- 5:07with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ
- 5:10and the teaching that accords with godliness,
- 5:13he is puffed up with conceit and understands
- 5:16nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy
- 5:20and for quarrels about words, which produce envy
- 5:24and dissension, slander, evil suspicions, and
- 5:27constant friction among people who are depraved
- 5:30in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining
- 5:34that godliness is a means of gain. But godliness
- 5:38with contempt is great gain, for we brought nothing
- 5:42into the world, and we cannot take anything out.
- 6:01But as for you, O man of God, flee these things.
- 6:17Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love,
- 6:21steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight
- 6:24of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which
- 6:28you were called and about which you have made
- 6:31a good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
- 6:34I charge you in the presence of God who gives
- 6:37life to all things and of Christ Jesus who in
- 6:40his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the
- 6:43good confession to keep the commandment unstained
- 6:47and free from reproach until the appearing of
- 6:50our Lord Jesus Christ, which he will display
- 6:53at the proper time. He who is the blessed and
- 6:56only sovereign and the King of kings and Lord
- 7:00of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells
- 7:05in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever
- 7:08seen or can see, to him be honor and eternal
- 7:12dominion. Amen. As for the rich in this present
- 7:16age, charge them not to be haughty. nor to set
- 7:19their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but
- 7:23on God, who richly provides us with everything
- 7:26to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in
- 7:30good works, to be generous and ready to share,
- 7:34thus storing up treasures for themselves as a
- 7:38good foundation for the future, as that they
- 7:42may take hold of that which is truly life. O
- 7:47Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you.
- 7:50Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions
- 7:54of what is falsely called knowledge, for by professing
- 7:58it, some have swerved from the faith. Grace be
- 8:02with you. It's very important that we understand
- 8:05the importance of the Word of God in the life
- 8:09of a believer. Now, As we sit and we look and
- 8:12we read about what Paul says to Timothy here,
- 8:15it says, first principle, godly leaders must
- 8:19pursue godliness, hold to the faith, and live
- 8:23obediently. Do you hear that, men? Godly men,
- 8:28godly women, especially the men, should be leaders
- 8:32that must pursue godliness, hold to the faith,
- 8:36and live obediently. You don't get the choice
- 8:39of doing what you think you should do. You have
- 8:42to do what God says you should do. For this very
- 8:46reason, make every effort to supplement your
- 8:49faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge,
- 8:52and knowledge with self -control, and self -control
- 8:55with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness,
- 8:58and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly
- 9:01affection with love. For if these qualities are
- 9:05yours and are increasing, They keep you from
- 9:08being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge
- 9:12of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1, 5 -8. Do
- 9:16you understand that? And what we're going to
- 9:18read is almost the same list that Paul gives
- 9:22Timothy. But pay attention to what Peter says
- 9:25here. For if these qualities are yours and are
- 9:29increasing, they keep you from being ineffective
- 9:32and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus
- 9:35Christ. You want to know why the church is struggling
- 9:38here in America? Because it doesn't seek holiness,
- 9:41godliness, righteousness, and truth. It seeks
- 9:45only that which pleases itself. Whatever feeds
- 9:50the sinful nature is what we want. Why? Because
- 9:53we love that momentary feel -goods, right? We
- 9:56love to be told how awesome we are. 1 Timothy
- 10:006, 11 through 16. But as for you, O man of God.
- 10:06I like how Paul uses this immediately. He reminds
- 10:10Timothy that, hey, you're a man that belongs
- 10:14to the living God. You're a man that has a responsibility
- 10:19to God. Any authority or anything that God has
- 10:24given you to steward is his and you belong to
- 10:28him. This word flee, fugo, fugo means to run
- 10:34from all things abhorrent. Do we run from everything
- 10:38that's abhorrent? Or do we sit back and just
- 10:42enjoy things that are abhorrent? This is a difficulty
- 10:45for each and every one of us, I'm sure. But are
- 10:47we really thinking through? Do we run from the
- 10:51things that harm us spiritually? Do we run from
- 10:55the things that harm and affect our families
- 10:59as men and as women in the household? Do we really
- 11:04flee? Do we really run from the abhorrent? Lord
- 11:08knows we see the abhorrent every day. And then
- 11:12he gives them this. He says, pursue, diako, means
- 11:16to seek eagerly or to endeavor to acquire. Are
- 11:23you endeavoring to acquire God's righteousness,
- 11:28godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness?
- 11:31And how do I acquire these things? How do I get
- 11:35them? There is only one place on all the planet
- 11:39that God has given you. to grow in righteousness,
- 11:42to grow in godliness, faith, love, steadfastness,
- 11:45and gentleness, and that's his word. There is
- 11:47no other place that you can go in order to grow
- 11:51and acquire, pursue these things. As a matter
- 11:55of fact, it says in Psalm 1, it's a psalm that
- 11:59I memorized, but I'll read it from the ESV because
- 12:02I memorized it in the NIV. I said that at early
- 12:05service. Look what it says in Psalm 1. It's actually
- 12:09bigger than I thought. Here we go. Blessed is
- 12:11the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
- 12:15nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in
- 12:18the seat of scoffers, but his delight is in the
- 12:21law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates
- 12:24day and night. Does God's Word saturate your
- 12:30life? Do you think about God, His Word, every
- 12:34minute of every day? You're like, well, that's
- 12:37a little bit of a Jesus freak stuff. That's too
- 12:39much Jesus for me. You can't get enough of Jesus.
- 12:42One, you have all the Jesus you're going to get.
- 12:44The question is, how much do you want to know
- 12:46him? How much do you really want to be changed?
- 12:49Because you cannot change if you don't change
- 12:52the mind. We're going to talk about that in a
- 12:54little bit. So seek God's righteousness, godliness,
- 12:59faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness in the
- 13:01word. How can a young man keep his way pure?
- 13:04By living according to your word. I have hidden
- 13:06your word in my heart that I might not sin against
- 13:07you. Psalm 119 verse 11 and I think it's 12.
- 13:11It is Psalm 119 though. Verse 12 in 1 Timothy
- 13:15chapter 6 verse 12. Fight. Agonizome. Agonizome
- 13:22means to contend or struggle with difficulties
- 13:25and danger. In other words, what this means is
- 13:28I have to be willing to fight the good fight.
- 13:32I need to be willing to contend for the faith
- 13:35through struggles, difficulties, and danger.
- 13:38In other words, we've gotten comfortable here
- 13:41in the Church of America because we can come,
- 13:44gather together, talk about Jesus, be told how
- 13:48awesome we are, go home, and not think about
- 13:51Him all day, all week, and then come back and
- 13:53go, I got my fill again. But that's not the way
- 13:56relationship with God works. Because in every
- 13:58single day, you are literally struggling with
- 14:01difficulties and dangers. What kind of struggle
- 14:03are you fighting? What fight are you really fighting?
- 14:06The greatest fight that you're going to have
- 14:08and the greatest enemy that you have is not Satan.
- 14:14You can't blame it on the devil. The greatest
- 14:17enemy that you live with is yourself. Every day
- 14:22you wake up at war. Every day you're fighting
- 14:25and battling. Every day you've got to deal with
- 14:28your mind and the issues that are going on in
- 14:31your life. Every single day you wonder why Christians
- 14:33continue to struggle and never live victorious
- 14:35lives because they're too busy trying to blame
- 14:38it on someone or something else. The greatest
- 14:41enemy you have is you. How do we know that? Because
- 14:44Paul tells us that why do I do the things I do
- 14:47not want to do but the things I hate, those I
- 14:49keep on doing. So I find at work within the members
- 14:51of my body a law. It's called the law of sin.
- 14:55Sin wants to kill you. And it may kill your body
- 14:59one day. It will if the Lord tarries. But when
- 15:03we get old, sin has won that one. But he hasn't
- 15:06won the victory. It's temporary. Because the
- 15:09dead in Christ will rise and those who are left
- 15:12will be caught up to meet him in the air and
- 15:13will forever be with the Lord. But sin wants
- 15:16to kill you. How do we win this battle? How do
- 15:19we deal with the issue of endeavoring and purposing
- 15:23to fight the good fight of faith, living for
- 15:25the purpose of the gospel, fighting for the gospel.
- 15:28How do we hold on to these things? Well, the
- 15:32word the good fight in the Greek means, with
- 15:35all things praiseworthy, exert oneself to the
- 15:39utmost against all things opposed to Christ.
- 15:41Am I exerting myself to the point that I am exhausted
- 15:45in the fight of war? but I am using all things
- 15:50that are praiseworthy. I am using righteousness,
- 15:52godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness,
- 15:57faithfulness, self -control. Am I applying the
- 16:01Word of God in my life to the point that I am
- 16:03fighting and contending in the struggle of difficulties
- 16:08and dangers? Because the battlefield is not out
- 16:11there. The battlefield is right here. How do
- 16:15we know? Romans 12, 1 and 2. Verse 2, do not
- 16:19be conformed to the pattern of this world, but
- 16:21be transformed by the renewing of your mind so
- 16:23you can test and approve what God's will is,
- 16:25his good, pleasing, and perfect will. If you
- 16:27cannot win the wars here, you will never win
- 16:31the victory of life. And you can't win without
- 16:35Christ because he's already won it. So what do
- 16:38we do? It's actually verse 1. Therefore I urge
- 16:41you, brothers, in the view of God's mercy, to
- 16:44offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy
- 16:46and pleasing unto God, for this is your reasonable
- 16:48act of worship. How do you win the Christian
- 16:50life? How do you continue to fight the good fight?
- 16:53Die. Surrender. Self -sacrifice. Take up your
- 16:58cross daily and follow me. That's what he's talking
- 17:02about here. When we're pursuing, when we're endeavoring
- 17:05to acquire righteousness, godliness, faith, love,
- 17:07steadfastness, and gentleness, it starts here.
- 17:10We win here because Christ has won. Die. That's
- 17:16the idea. So he says, fight the good fight of
- 17:19faith. Take hold of eternal life. Embrace the
- 17:24life you are given in Christ. Are you content?
- 17:28Is Christ enough for you? Godliness with contentment
- 17:32is great gain. Take hold of eternal life. Embrace
- 17:37the life you are given in Christ to which you
- 17:40were called. God has called you out of the kingdom
- 17:44of darkness into the kingdom of his light. You
- 17:47belong to him. He has picked you out of all the
- 17:51people on the planet. You sitting in the chair.
- 17:54He has chosen you to be part of his family. What
- 17:58a privilege. And then he says this concerning
- 18:02Christ, that he has called you about which you've
- 18:06made a good confession. You have professed Christ
- 18:09as Lord because of the gospel. And you've done
- 18:13that in the presence of many witnesses. When
- 18:16you come to Christ, you don't keep it to yourself.
- 18:18You tell the world. Why? Because that's a good
- 18:23confession. Look what Christ has done for me.
- 18:27And what's the response? How do you do that?
- 18:29What do you do? What's the scripture say? Go
- 18:33and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
- 18:35them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy
- 18:38Spirit. Go and be baptized. Baptism is a proclamation
- 18:42to the entire world that you are a follower of
- 18:45the King. And I have nothing to be ashamed of
- 18:48because of his sacrifice for me. It's interesting
- 18:52that even Jesus does this same thing. We're going
- 18:55to read that in a second. Timothy made a profession
- 18:58in many witnesses. And then Paul says this, I
- 19:01charge you in the presence of God who gives life
- 19:04to all things and of Christ Jesus, who in his
- 19:09testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good
- 19:12confession. He says to Pontius Pilate, my kingdom's
- 19:15not of this world. If it were of this world,
- 19:19would not my servants take up arms? Wouldn't
- 19:23they fight? The kingdom I come from is not of
- 19:26this world. You don't belong to the world. You
- 19:28belong to him. The good confession is that he
- 19:31is the king of his kingdom. That the gospel is
- 19:35the answer to the disease who in his testimony
- 19:41before Pontius Pilate made the good confession.
- 19:45Then he urges Timothy to keep the commandment.
- 19:49Keep all that God commands, unstained and free
- 19:53from reproach. Don't let anyone look at your
- 19:56life and go, you're a hypocrite. Then he says,
- 20:00until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 20:02Why? Because when Christ comes back, perfection
- 20:06is coming. Behold, I make all things new. His
- 20:09kingdom will be established forever, and we will
- 20:12be with him forever as he's promised. No more
- 20:16sin. And then he says, which he will display
- 20:18at the proper time. This word proper time means
- 20:21exact time concerning himself. He will come when
- 20:25he's ready. Why do I say that? Because as we
- 20:28get a little bit further down, we start to deal
- 20:30with some issues, and I want to mention Bethel
- 20:33Church. They're trying to bring the kingdom here.
- 20:36It's called dominion theology. The seven mountain
- 20:40mandate. It is evil, it is sinful, and it's wrong.
- 20:44Do not, as God's people, listen or watch. anything
- 20:50from Bethel. It is evil. Why? Because they want
- 20:54to say they've been given the authority by Christ
- 20:56to take dominion. And you'll see why I'm saying
- 20:59this in a minute. There is only one sovereign.
- 21:02They want to say that God has given them sovereignty
- 21:06and that they give God permission to use them.
- 21:11This I didn't give in the first service, but
- 21:14I need to clarify a little bit so people aren't
- 21:16confused. When you are not sticking to the sound
- 21:19doctrine of the scriptures and you are leaning
- 21:22on other teachers through television or radio
- 21:24that are extremely dangerous and that pull you
- 21:27away by every kind of argument, which he warns
- 21:30Timothy about later in the same chapter, you're
- 21:33setting yourself up for a lot of disappointment.
- 21:36If you ever get a chance to watch a series called
- 21:40American Gospel, there's a third part of that
- 21:43series called Spirit and Fire. I do encourage
- 21:45you. It's a... It's a documentary series. It's
- 21:52probably going to be like 12 videos long. I do
- 21:55encourage you to watch it. It'll be eye -opening.
- 21:57But that requires us as men of God to preach
- 22:00the full counsel of His Word and to teach doctrine
- 22:02and to warn the people of what's coming. We're
- 22:05in a day where the onslaught of false doctrine
- 22:08and false teaching is being permeated through
- 22:10our culture. And the only way it's going to stop
- 22:13is when men of God stand and say, No! and expose
- 22:17them. I don't do it because I find joy in exposing
- 22:20them. It angers me that I have to do it in the
- 22:22first place. But their work is always continuing,
- 22:26which means we must continue to work also. Look
- 22:28what it says. If Christ appears at his proper
- 22:30time, why is he going to appear at his proper
- 22:32time? Why is Christ going to come? Because he
- 22:36who is the blessed and only sovereign, he is
- 22:40sovereign, always was sovereign, and always will
- 22:43be sovereign. He was on the throne at the beginning
- 22:46of time. He's still on the throne now. God rules
- 22:50and God governs. You may not like the way He
- 22:54does it, but He doesn't really care. It's His
- 22:57way and it's the right way. It's pretty simple.
- 23:01Who is the blessed and only sovereign? He is
- 23:04the King of kings, the Lord of lords, who alone
- 23:08has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable
- 23:12light, whom no one has ever seen nor can see.
- 23:16That is God. He is king and he reigns. Why is
- 23:22this so important? Because we don't rule our
- 23:25own lives. God rules. God allows us as creatures
- 23:29to make some decisions within the parameters
- 23:33of what we are. We don't have true free will,
- 23:36do we? It's pretty limited. I mean, I would love
- 23:40to fly like a bird. I mean, if I had free will
- 23:43to do that, then I would find any way possible
- 23:46to do it, like a bird. But I can't, because I'm
- 23:49not a bird. So I am within the confines of what
- 23:52I am. Remember that. Why is this important? Because
- 23:57we miss the point of God's sovereignty. I think
- 24:00we have a hard time with the reality that God
- 24:01rules, because man wants to rule. That has been
- 24:04the problem from the beginning. He wants to make
- 24:07his own decisions. He's volitional. So, if God
- 24:11is King of kings and Lord of lords and alone
- 24:14has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable
- 24:17light, who no one has ever seen nor can see,
- 24:19well, to Him be glory and honor and eternal dominion
- 24:23forever. To Him and Him alone. So, second principle,
- 24:29God's stewards, godly stewards are committed
- 24:32to doing good, being generous, and sharing all
- 24:35the Lord has given. You know why many people
- 24:37are rich? It's because they know how to manage
- 24:40money. Think about it. Okay? They're stewards
- 24:44because they have learned the principle of stewardship.
- 24:48We talked a little bit about that last week.
- 24:50Look what it says here. Through him, then, let
- 24:54us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise
- 24:57to God. That is the fruit of lips that acknowledge
- 25:01his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share
- 25:05what you have. for such sacrifices are pleasing
- 25:09to God, Hebrews 13. God is pleased when people
- 25:13are generous. God demands, commands us to be
- 25:17generous. You think 10 % is enough? God doesn't
- 25:22want 10%. He wants all of you. He wants your
- 25:26wallet. He wants your feet. He wants your house.
- 25:29He wants your TV. He wants it all. He doesn't
- 25:31just want parts. And you know what people do?
- 25:34They come in, they give their 10%, and they go
- 25:35home and say, I gave God enough, because that's
- 25:38all he requires. That's not New Testament covenant.
- 25:40New Testament covenant says, I give all my life
- 25:44to him. All. Do we keep our promises and our
- 25:49giving towards him? He doesn't want 10%, like
- 25:52that's enough to please him. He wants all of
- 25:55you. He wants your heart. Being said, this deals
- 25:59with the issue of the rich. It says, as for the
- 26:01rich in this present age, charge them not to
- 26:04be haughty. In other words, don't go around saying,
- 26:07I'm good. It's all good. I can live whatever
- 26:11I want. I'm good. Nor to set their hopes on the
- 26:15uncertainty of riches. In other words, that I'm
- 26:17going to be okay because I got enough. Trust
- 26:21me, you can't take anything out of the world.
- 26:24You came in with nothing, you will leave with
- 26:26nothing. That's what it says, doesn't it? I just
- 26:29read that in verses 3 through 10. He says, don't
- 26:34set your hopes on the uncertainty of riches,
- 26:36but on God. Why? Who richly provides us with
- 26:39everything to enjoy. Do you guys enjoy what God
- 26:42has given you? Do you guys sit back and enjoy
- 26:46and look at what God has lavishly blessed you
- 26:50with? Or do you go, that's all my hard work.
- 26:53We don't keep a beautiful home because We're
- 26:56trying to impress people. We keep a beautiful
- 26:58home because God is beautiful. We steward because
- 27:02God commands us to steward the home he's given.
- 27:05And one of the things that we do to show we have
- 27:08dominion is to beautify the things that God beautifies.
- 27:11It's not to rule. He rules. We steward. Look
- 27:16what it says, continues in verse 18. They are
- 27:19to do good and to be rich in good works, to be
- 27:22generous and ready to share. thus storing up
- 27:26treasures for themselves as a foundation, storing
- 27:29up treasures, not earthly treasures, storing
- 27:32up treasures, heavenly treasures, as a good foundation.
- 27:37What foundation? The foundation laid by the apostles
- 27:40and Christ our cornerstone for the future. The
- 27:43future of what? The future wealth we get to give
- 27:46to our grandkids? Or do we store up the treasures
- 27:50for the future? meaning the gospel and the generations
- 27:55upon generations upon generations of believers.
- 27:58Which legacy do you think is going to last? Now
- 28:01I say this, I want you to get this. We look at
- 28:04our president today. Many of us like what he's
- 28:07doing. Let's say he does all this stuff, but
- 28:10he dies without Jesus. What legacy does he leave?
- 28:14He leaves nothing because Christ is not supreme
- 28:18for him. Think about that. It does not matter
- 28:20what you think this man is doing, and it does
- 28:22not matter what the church says concerning him,
- 28:25that this is God's sovereign work. If the man
- 28:30dies without Christ, what does it matter? Momentary
- 28:34comfort for Christians. Think about it. What
- 28:37kind of legacy is he going to leave? He's a billionaire.
- 28:40He's got enough money that will last generations.
- 28:43But he dies without Jesus. What does he leave?
- 28:46His money. He came into the world with nothing.
- 28:49He dies with nothing. That's sad. That's what
- 28:53he's talking about here. If the president ever
- 28:55listens to this, I pray that he stores up treasures
- 28:59in heaven upon the good foundation, that the
- 29:03future of what he leaves is the legacy of the
- 29:06gospel and of godliness in the life of his family.
- 29:09Why? So that they may take hold of that which
- 29:13is truly life. Godly leaders must preserve all
- 29:20that the Lord has entrusted them. And I, when
- 29:22I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming
- 29:29to you the testimony of God with lofty speech
- 29:32and wisdom. For I've decided to know nothing
- 29:35among you except Christ and Him crucified. We
- 29:39don't come with eloquent speech and we don't
- 29:42come with dollars, dollars. We come with the
- 29:45gospel and the gospel alone. Christ is enough
- 29:48and the gospel is enough. It's the only thing
- 29:50that he's given to man by which men can be redeemed.
- 29:53And we look at our churches today and wonder
- 29:55how many people can preach that truth. I remember
- 29:58when I first started preaching the gospel, started
- 30:02doing missionary work, and I went from church
- 30:04to church. 98 % of the people that went to Baptist
- 30:08churches, when you ask them what is the gospel,
- 30:11could not answer that question. In a room of
- 30:1410 people, two people knew the answer. In a room
- 30:18of 100 people, maybe four people would know the
- 30:21answer. Why? Because we've been told, all you
- 30:25got to do is say this prayer. Welcome to the
- 30:28family. Look what Paul says to Timothy here.
- 30:31He says, oh, Timothy, guard, preserve, keep from
- 30:36being snatched away. The deposit entrusted to
- 30:41you. What deposit? The deposit of the gospel.
- 30:44The deposit of the truth of God's word. The deposit
- 30:47of sound doctrine. Timothy, this has been entrusted
- 30:51to you as a pastor. Are you going to let it be
- 30:55snatched away? I will not. I will not. I will
- 31:00preach the full counsel of God's word, and I
- 31:02will preach the gospels in its entirety, and
- 31:05I will call you to obedience and into a holy
- 31:08life. That's what godly men should be doing.
- 31:10In the same way that Paul urges Timothy to guard,
- 31:14to keep from being snatched away, the deposit
- 31:17entrusted to him. The best way that we as men
- 31:20of God can do this is to avoid irreverent babble
- 31:23and contradictions of what is falsely called
- 31:28knowledge. that we speak against the false, and
- 31:32that we speak the truth of sound doctrine. That
- 31:35is our responsibility. Too many books out there.
- 31:38Look what it says in verse 21. For by professing
- 31:42these contradictions, by professing these irreverent
- 31:46babbles, is the idea here. For by professing
- 31:50it, some have swerved from the faith. Can you
- 31:52imagine that? They're so committed to the false
- 31:55doctrine and the false gospel and the prosperity
- 31:58gospel and the feel -good gospel that they just
- 32:02shipwreck their life. Their ministry is a mess.
- 32:05No, it's not. Look at how many people go to their
- 32:07church. Look at how many people are going to
- 32:09go to hell with them. You know what's amazing
- 32:11is Paul says this, right? To O Timothy, guard
- 32:15the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid irreverent
- 32:18babble, contradictions. of what is falsely called
- 32:21knowledge, for by professing it, some have swerved
- 32:24from the faith. Grace be with you. And he stops
- 32:26the letter. It's the end of the letter. No benediction.
- 32:29He just leaves Timothy there. I'm like, what's
- 32:34that about? Here's why I think Paul did that.
- 32:37Because he's like, Timothy, you need to think
- 32:39about these things. I don't need to give you
- 32:42a data boy. Real men, when they're being challenged,
- 32:46and exhorted, because this is what this letter
- 32:48is. This letter is a letter of exhortation. You
- 32:52don't go, oh, by the way, you're doing great.
- 32:54No, it's grace be with you. I pray that you can
- 32:57work these out. I pray that you can do what God
- 33:02has commanded you. Think about it. Read the letter,
- 33:05and then he says, grace be with you. I mean,
- 33:08he leaves all kinds of stuff on Timothy's lap.
- 33:11As a 19, 20 -year -old, this is one of the other
- 33:14things I wanted to share. It's sort of like when
- 33:17I played football. The men will get this. The
- 33:19women, you won't get this. It's not chauvinistic
- 33:22at all. Trust me. When we would go into practice
- 33:25or we're in a game, halftime, we go in the locker
- 33:28room or we sit on the sideline with the coach
- 33:31and we're getting our rear ends kicked. That's
- 33:34bad. Do you think he goes, you know what? You
- 33:36guys are doing great. Keep trying. No. What he
- 33:40says is, he says, you guys are terrible. What
- 33:44is wrong with you? You practice better than this.
- 33:47You're better than this. You should be working
- 33:50harder at this. What is your problem? And we
- 33:54go, I don't know, coach. He's like, B -men, stand
- 33:57up and go take the field. Now, think about that.
- 34:01How come men can be talked to like that? See,
- 34:06Donna knows. The reason why you can't talk to
- 34:10a woman like that, they'll be like, oh, no. They
- 34:14get hurt feelings. For men, it's like, yo, let's
- 34:18go. I'll follow a guy like that. That's what
- 34:22Paul's doing here. Hey, Timothy, grace be with
- 34:25you, bro. What are you going to do? Go do what
- 34:28you were told to do. That's the idea. Then he
- 34:31gives him a second letter, which we'll talk about
- 34:33after Resurrection Sunday. Okay? So what kind
- 34:37of men and women are you going to be? Especially
- 34:40the men. What kind of men are you going to be?
- 34:42Are you willing to out -serve, be the first,
- 34:45work the hardest, love God supremely, lead your
- 34:49families, or are we just going to continue giving
- 34:52up our responsibility as men and let our wives
- 34:54take over? How about if we invite them to partner
- 34:57with us? How about if we ask them to, hey, won't
- 34:59you come alongside me? Let's go do this together.
- 35:02That's what real leadership is about. Father,
- 35:05I want to thank you so much for your goodness
- 35:06and faithfulness. Thank you, Lord, for your word.
- 35:10Thank you that you have called us as men to guard
- 35:13the deposit that has been entrusted to us, to
- 35:18avoid irreverent babble and contradictions, but
- 35:20to stand firm in the word, to stand on the truth,
- 35:24to teach sound doctrine, even when it's difficult,
- 35:27even when people don't want to hear it. But you
- 35:30deserve all honor and glory. Help us to contend
- 35:33for the faith, to give you glory and honor in
- 35:36all that we do. We praise you and thank you in
- 35:38Jesus' name. Amen.
