- 2:19Charleston Mayor Amy Schilder Good was going to join his mayor Monday. We'll have
- 2:22her on a little bit later on in the show. Also Evan Osborne from
- 2:24Capitol Market. It's going to be stopping by as well. Of course,
- 2:27one of the big stories around the valley the death on Friday of Judge You
- 2:31want a tab Attributes pouring in from everywhere. Now, I'll say I did
- 2:36not know Judge Tabbitt personally. I'd been at several events with her throughout the
- 2:40valley, spoken to her a few times, but did not know her well.
- 2:44But she only seemed very very pleasant and apparently from all of the kind
- 2:49words I've been reading the form of tributes from all walk Life, social media
- 2:53and other places, that seems to be a pretty accurate description. A life
- 2:57will live for sure, and I'm sure each of my guests on the show
- 3:00today I want to weigh in on that. So again, our thoughts and
- 3:04prayers going out to her family, friends and other loved ones. It is
- 3:07Monday, as I said, some Mayor Amy shiver goodwill join us a mayor
- 3:10Monday. A little bit letter Ron and as I said, Evan Osborne Capital
- 3:14Markets here and this guy and you know, Rick Cavner. I've had hundreds
- 3:17of guests on the show in the past three years. You may be the
- 3:22first other than one of our news team that's actually been on the show two
- 3:27days in a row. Now, you were on Friday Funhouse, of course,
- 3:30with a preview of October West, which happened Saturday afternoon, and there
- 3:35was a big announcement. Going to get to that here in a couple of
- 3:37moments. But this may be at first I'll have to go back and look
- 3:39at the archives to see, but I think you may be the first has
- 3:44been on the show two days in a row other than the news department.
- 3:46I am honored. That's an interesting fact that we'll have to go back in
- 3:50check. Well, I have to go back and take a look at how
- 3:53was October West. It was incredible, it was I mean, we can't
- 3:55think the community enough for coming out and supporting the West Side and our organization
- 4:00and the work that we're doing. It was it was truly a huge success.
- 4:05Once again, I mean we haven't gotten final numbers. You know,
- 4:09I've passed out the second I got home at ten Saturday night from hard work
- 4:15from put that in there. Sorry, Yes, I was very tired.
- 4:18It was a very long day. But it was a wonderful day. And
- 4:21I haven't had time to look at the numbers yet. We'll get that this
- 4:24week. But but it definitely the attendance was was probably one of the best
- 4:28we've seen that. I mean, we're just talking the weather. With the
- 4:30weather, yeah, it was absolutely fantastic. I think it would have made
- 4:32it better had it been a little bit cooler. And I'd say that because
- 4:36when you think of October West and that sort of thing, maybe a little
- 4:40chill in the air, but hey, you know, sunny sky's temperatures in
- 4:43the upper seventies, low ladies, you'll take oh yeah, I mean,
- 4:45you know, we've we've we've hosted events where we got rained out with fun.
- 4:48It is no fun at all. So it was great and we have
- 4:53so many people to think all of our sponsors of course in COVID and City,
- 4:56National Bank and Flirty and so many others that have been continual Architects has
- 5:00been sponsored to this event for for so long. And there were so many
- 5:02I can't even name them all. But and also we had so many volunteers.
- 5:05We had over almost two like one hundred and fifty volunteers that signed up
- 5:09to either poor or to work registration or or help us out with, you
- 5:13know, running things back and forth. And you know at Leo and our
- 5:15staff, she did a wonderful job and just everything everything wenting extremely well.
- 5:18Yeah, I know, you said that the numbers will be coming out over
- 5:21the next couple of weeks, a couple of months, and you guys in
- 5:24the event business, you got to kind of study these things and you get
- 5:26an economic impact and did people stay and all that sort of thing. But
- 5:30if you had to put a ballpark on it at any given time at peak
- 5:33when you looked out just a ballpark, figure, oh, I'd say we
- 5:38were. I'd say we were an eighteen hundred maybe two thousand is my guests,
- 5:41and we're in there. Maybe it was. I mean the Washington Street
- 5:44West was shoulder shoulder to shoulder blocks two or three blocks, so and you
- 5:48had that. Of course, with Marshall's homecoming game going on, you had
- 5:51that, and then of course the people were kind of looking ahead to the
- 5:55WVU game later that night. But you had a lot of and there were
- 5:57a ton of other activities going on. I mean, I said, this
- 6:00past weekend, just about every community in the valley had something going on.
- 6:02Barbara's Ville had their polka, had something, Glyndin and had something. So
- 6:06you have all these things going on and you still managed to get about eighteen
- 6:09hundred to two thousand people there. Not too shabby, mister cad No,
- 6:12no, no, no, it was you know, and this was the
- 6:14fifteenth year for that event, and we're just really proud of of the obviously
- 6:17the work, all the work we do at this event, in particularly the
- 6:19way it's grown and evolved. It's just really great. Let's become a destination.
- 6:23I mean it's you know, you you put together these events and you
- 6:26want to obviously get people from the Charleston surrounding areas, but this has become
- 6:29one of those signature events that did you talk to anybody that had come in
- 6:32from like far away places for this particular event, or any any that you
- 6:35know, I think We've talked before in the past that I'll we'll run into
- 6:39people at events all our events all the time that have come from different states,
- 6:42and I have so many stories. I was so busy this time that
- 6:45I didn't have a lot of time to stop and talk. I saw a
- 6:46lot of familiar faces, but also saw a lot of people I've never seen
- 6:48in my life. So I'm going to guess we all. I know for
- 6:50sure we had folks on other states come. We'll be able to look at
- 6:54the data on there with the ticket sales, the pre ticket sales and figure
- 6:56out where they came. Now, there was a big announcement. You kind
- 6:59of teased it on. You said that there was going to be a big
- 7:01announcement made there, and that announcement was made. Talk about that. Yeah,
- 7:04Yeah, we made the announcement from stage, you know. And just
- 7:08to kind of brief background on this little history, you know, our organization
- 7:12went through a pretty extensive strategic planning process. We're talking about lest Charles May
- 7:16Streets. Yes, our what we've been called went through a strategic planning process
- 7:23with our board members and our staff, and then we were charged with taking
- 7:27a look at sort of a restructuring of the organization, rebranding. You know,
- 7:30we've been around collectively for twenty one years now, so you know,
- 7:32it's always smart too when an organization has been an operation for that long to
- 7:36periodically take a look and see where things are and what needs to change,
- 7:40what needs to evolve, how you need to evolve with your core audience and
- 7:43that kind of thing. And we had a rebranding committee and we went through
- 7:46a process and made the decision that we felt we knew it was time based
- 7:49on feedback, we gotten conversations with the full board, all the board members,
- 7:54that was time to take a look at the possibility of a of a
- 7:56full rebrand and so that that process took over months. You know, we
- 8:01would hope that we hope it would this would have taken less time, but
- 8:03as you know, I kind of had my stuff going on and had to
- 8:05make some changes there, and we finally were able to this past Saturday and
- 8:11make the announcement that we've we've changed our name from Charleston Main Streets. We
- 8:16are now Charleston Urban Works. And part of the part of what you'll be
- 8:20seeing here in the coming weeks, some of the announcements you'll see from our
- 8:22Facebook page. We are still going to be very focused on the urban development
- 8:28of the East End and the West Side what we call the urban neighborhood business
- 8:31districts, but we're gonna be taking a much more block by block approach.
- 8:35And I could go into the nerdy details of the down and dirty what we
- 8:39do, but but you know, in the past, we've sort of looked
- 8:41at an entire swath of land, all of Washington Street West, all the
- 8:45Washington Street East. It's a lot of land and property owners and business and
- 8:48property and business, and so we we we're going need to take a step
- 8:54back and really concentrate through some survey work that we're going to do with our
- 8:58business owners and our property owners, really gear out not only the needs but
- 9:01the priority blocks and figure out how we can be much more strategic and mindful
- 9:05when it comes to our approach. We're going to be using four new objectives.
- 9:09So that's a business generation, business development, if you will, public
- 9:13space enhancement, telling the story, and marketing. We're gonna have a whole
- 9:18sort of team devoted to with volunteers, working group members, committee members devoted
- 9:22to how we can better tell the story of the urban districts of Charleston,
- 9:26the urban corep if you will, and how we can better be marketers for
- 9:31those businesses and those properties. And then lastly, increasing engagement. How do
- 9:35we increase the number of people not only within our organization that are helping to
- 9:39make to make Charleston a better place, but also how we reach out to
- 9:43the community at large and educate them on how they can get involved. So,
- 9:46you know, that's very high level right now speaking, but you know
- 9:50we're going to be getting into the down and dirty of that and really dig
- 9:52it in. And we felt like this was a really great time to sort
- 9:56of reimagine the organization. So yeah, we're really excited about the new name
- 10:01Charleston Urban Works, and you'll be seeing some really interesting and really exciting projects.
- 10:07So that will be happening starting in twenty twenty four. We're keeping the
- 10:13baseline programming we already have, so our spree WV program very successful by local
- 10:16program are like our Gateway lighting initiative that's that's still in the process of happening,
- 10:20that should be done by January. Our facade and signed grant programs still
- 10:24going to be happening, and our major events will still be happening, so
- 10:28that baseline of programming will still be there. But the really exciting part is
- 10:31we're going to be taking a new approach to deciding what our program is going
- 10:33to look like in the future. Right, So it's a really exciting time
- 10:37to be involved. Well, and again, as we said, as you
- 10:39said from time to time, but an organization has been around as long as
- 10:43you said, I think twenty one years, is that right? That Charleston
- 10:46Main Streets has been a thing here, and there are Main Streets organizations all
- 10:48across the state and all across the country. Sometimes you do need to,
- 10:50as my grandpa used to say, Rick, you gotta rack them up and
- 10:52shoot them again every now and then, you know you got you gotta take
- 10:56a look at things and say, okay, well, how can we how
- 10:58can we improve that? How can we get our message out to people?
- 11:01And sometimes it takes a little splash of color, and it takes the it
- 11:05takes the shiny pretty things to uh uh, not you, of course,
- 11:07but other shiny pretty things in order to to to shine a light on things.
- 11:13That's right, that's right. Yeah, So we saw our Facebook posts
- 11:16on our it's still the Charleston Main Streets page. We've got through a process
- 11:18to change them, yes, a few days, but it made it doesn't
- 11:22make it easy, by the way, they don't make changing pages easy,
- 11:24that's right. But but you know, the baseline information about the about the
- 11:28new name is on the Facebook page on that post right now, right sort
- 11:31of tells a little bit of a story there to give you an idea.
- 11:33But we know we have we have a responsibility to to make make this household
- 11:37name right. We want to make sure we're associating our organizational name with events
- 11:41like this I come on and talk about projects. You know, it's really
- 11:43important that folks understand, like we have so many partnerships day. We have
- 11:48so many folks that that if it weren't for them, we would not be
- 11:50able to get our initiatives done because we're all we're working towards those same goals.
- 11:54I mean, the City Charleston's our strongest partner and supporter. The administration
- 11:58I mean, I mean, excuse me, Mayor a good whe and her
- 12:01administration's absolutely incredible and their support for us. Another good example is the Urbramneu
- 12:05Authority. They're a great partner of ours. The Charleston CDB. You know,
- 12:09when we have national partners as well, the International Downtown Association, main
- 12:13Street America, we're still going to be affiliated with them. So, I
- 12:16mean, you know, there's there's We know that things can't get done unless
- 12:20folks are working together, and that's the other part. We're really going to
- 12:22be focusing heavily on strategic partnerships moving forward. Rick continued, good to do
- 12:26good stuff as you always haven't, always will and we'll talk again soon before
- 12:30I let you get there. Any thoughts in the passing of Judge Tabot before
- 12:33we come, Yeah, I mean, I'm I was. I was devastated
- 12:35when I found out on Facebook and Judge Tabbot has been been been a friend
- 12:41of mine for I guess it would have been I ran. I first ran
- 12:43for a schoolboard in twenty sixteen, and that was when I first had first
- 12:48met her, and I was like thirty three at the time, you know,
- 12:50the young buck who's trying to run for office. And and I'll I'll
- 12:56always remember our conversations. Finally, she was She's such a light, such
- 13:00a light in this community, you know, and she's so so very missed,
- 13:05and you know, it's just one of those things that's so sad,
- 13:07and you do it's hard to understand things. I'm like some things like this
- 13:11sometimes, you know, it really is hard to understand. And you know,
- 13:15I'm just I'm thinking about her family today and oh, you know,
- 13:18just yeah, it's really sad. Indeed, Ric, it's always a pleasure
- 13:22having the show man. I don't have you booked for tomorrow, so I'm
- 13:26you on Friday and to day you're not booked. You can take tomorrow off.

- 17:44How are you. I'm fantastic there. How are you? I'm doing
- 17:47fine. Before we get to why you're here and event you have coming up,
- 17:52I would imagine that it's even though it doesn't really feel like fall right
- 17:56now, it's gonna be eighty seven for I to day to buy this week,
- 18:00we can we're supposed to be. I think Saturday I saw sixty or
- 18:03so it was going to be the high and now that we flipped the capitals,
- 18:06October fall is a busy time for capital market. It is, without
- 18:08a doubt, our busiest month of the year, and we wouldn't have it
- 18:11any other way. Yeah, it's it's there's just something going on every single
- 18:17day basically. So what are you got going on this week? You got
- 18:18a big event this week? Wednesday, October fourth is the twenty twenty three
- 18:25Capital Market Mixer. I'm happy to announce that it's sold out, completely sold
- 18:29out. And then when you say sold out, how many bodies are we
- 18:32talking there to sell this thing out? Five hundred and fifty five fifty was
- 18:34the number? Okay, actually it was five and then yeah that yeah,
- 18:42rough top seating or something exactly exactly, So what exactly goes on with these
- 18:47mixers. So just to reiterate, capital market is a five to one C
- 18:51three non problems and we can only do what we do by hosting events within
- 18:56the community. And the Market Mixer is our signature event that we do every
- 19:00year. It's a celebration of the season, all things local, our vendors,
- 19:04our farmers, and really our community partners. And so every year we
- 19:11come together. It's always on a Wednesday, it's always the first October,
- 19:14first Wednesday of October, and we come together for an evening to really celebrate
- 19:18all the market has to offer. And this year we're building on a year
- 19:22of tremendous momentum. Without going into too much detail, we will have an
- 19:27announcement that night. Everybody's got an announcement at six Cavender had a big announcement
- 19:32at October West, you know, and he's got a big everybody, I
- 19:36need an announcement. I need to be able to make anou but but you
- 19:38get a big announcement coming up. We do, We do, and we're
- 19:41very excited. It's going to be transformative for the long term market. That
- 19:45sounds important. Yeah, sounds really important. Actually, what kind of planning
- 19:48goes into an event like this. It starts, it's a it's a year
- 19:51round cycle, and we do this through a committee of volunteers. Our board
- 19:55of directors are committed really unity organizers that help come in and really with with
- 20:03a staff of just basically three, we couldn't do this without without the support
- 20:10of the community. And so we really start in earnest right around the first
- 20:12of the year to get this event up and off the ground, and we're
- 20:17we're gonna probably bring in somewhere in the neighborhood eight to eighty five thousand dollars
- 20:22this year. And it's one of those real economic drivers for the Charleston area.
- 20:30I mean, it really really is. Yeah. So back to the
- 20:32league. You know, our mission, and our mission really lives around the
- 20:36fact that we are there not to not for the success of the market,
- 20:41but for the success of our tenants. Are small business owners, are farmers
- 20:44that work, you know, one hundred hour weeks to do what they do
- 20:48and and really bring a product that is unique and special to our customers.
- 20:53Yeah, I mean it's and that's what it's all about. And I have
- 20:56when one time or another. You know, I've had people and be different
- 21:00jobs I've had that have come to visit Charleston and they always said, well,
- 21:03I've got downtime in the evening. Maybe they're coming for a conference or
- 21:06something, and I know the mayor is going to be on next You can
- 21:07talk about this as well. But you said, well, what is it
- 21:10that I need to do? You know, one of those things, and
- 21:11one of them, she's you send people over to your place. Man,
- 21:15a capital market, we're the third place. We're not we're not home exactly
- 21:18the market. Well, and it's one of those things. And again I
- 21:21spent a lot of time traveling and uh, you know, it's one of
- 21:23those things. That's that that that's unique in West Virginia. There are similar
- 21:27type things, but there's not really anything like that, like a capital market
- 21:30where you have all those things coming in together. Because not only do you
- 21:33have the things with the farmers and the gardeners and you know, things like
- 21:37that, but also you've got restaurants in there, and also you got gift
- 21:41shops in there, and you've got things where can get a bottle of wine,
- 21:42or you can get cheese, or you can get a best fish market
- 21:45or best fish sandwich in my opinion, I've ever had in my life there.
- 21:48But you have all those things in one in one location. Absolutely,
- 21:52and it's and again you know, we're not pushing a private business on here.
- 21:56This is a quote unquote nonprofit organization and all the rate just goes right
- 22:00back into it. Our sole motivation is just to support them, and I
- 22:03think that that's a great source of confidence for our business owners and that you
- 22:10know, we're always looking out for their best interests. Yeah, that's that's
- 22:14what you do. So what exactly is it that go I mean, people
- 22:17are lucky enough to have their tickets. What exactly goes on there? So
- 22:21that night we're going to have We're tremendously grateful. We partner with chef Paul
- 22:25Smith to help curate a menu, and then we have the students at Carver
- 22:29actually prepare it. Yea. So it's a great opportunity for those students to
- 22:33not only learn from a James Beard finalists, but work on putting together an
- 22:40event for over five hundred people. So it's great experience for them and it
- 22:45really gives us as as a as an attendee, an opportunity to try some
- 22:51incredible fair. We have some live music. We're gonna have the Red Line
- 22:55Band backed up by DJEJ. And then we have a curated took back for
- 23:00all attendees with locally sourced items. So it's it's all good stuff. And
- 23:07again, I was told by someone recently, actually Evan, I was kind
- 23:10of volunteld that I'm going to be judging a macaroni and cheese contest coming up
- 23:14there soon. I mean, if you gotta work weekends and you gotta take
- 23:18away time from college football, I suppose mac and cheese is a good reason
- 23:22as any. I don't know how I got roped into this, but they
- 23:25tell me that. I think it's next month, is it right? It's
- 23:26it's Saturday in November fourth. Okay, I'm going to be I'm gonna be
- 23:30judging macro. I've got a pro tip because I was a judge last year.
- 23:34Okay, pace yourself, Okay, pace yourself. All right, we'll
- 23:37need a nap halfway. Okay. Well yeah, I mean it's pretty fielding
- 23:41food there and and and we'll talk about that between now and then. But
- 23:44what exactly is the purpose that I'm going to be stuff for myself? A
- 23:45macaroni and cheese. That's to support the Lawrence Ston's Childhood Language Center does a
- 23:51fantastic job putting that event together. I will say that there are several new
- 23:56UH entrance this year. There's going to be some crowd favorites, some long
- 24:02time perennium not to you know, make Don Wilson's head any bigger than it
- 24:07already. Yeah, but you know he'll be back. And there's another crew
- 24:11of an exciting crew of new participants from the pitch to oh my greens,
- 24:15listen really to it, really really cool small business. I'm really looking forward
- 24:18to it. By the way, I understand, I just got some information
- 24:22that today that today is your birthday. No, that's it's not. It's
- 24:26erroneous informations, fake news. It might be. No, Yeah, it
- 24:30is happy birthday, sir. Thank you for spending a portion of your birthday
- 24:33with us. Absolutely so. All right, so let's get more information on
- 24:37things Capital market. Where is the best place to go capital market dot net?
- 24:42Like I mentioned the tickets for Market Mixer. Unfortunately we're sold out for
- 24:45Wednesday, but this weekend on Friday, UH and Saturday, we partner with
- 24:52George Manahan, the Foxtrot to help support Parkinson's research in West Virginia. So
- 24:56Friday night we'll have a reception honoring you know, really just the tremendous research
- 25:02that they're helping to fund. And then Saturday morning, starting at eight am
- 25:06as the Fox Start five k. You can link back to both of those
- 25:10events on our website Capital Market dot net. The following weekend Festival's Harvest Artfare.
- 25:15That's going to be I think somewhere in the neighborhood of fifty local artisans
- 25:19and vendors that we're gonna partner with Festival to host in the outdoor market.
- 25:25The following weekend is the second annual now Charleston's Wizarding Weekend. It's also Trick
- 25:30or Treat a Capital Market from six to eight pm. And you're sitting home,
- 25:33you're thinking, how do I keep it? Just go to the website,
- 25:34go go to the social media. That's probably the best thing to do,
- 25:37right. Fortunately, it all lives in my head and sometimes it makes
- 25:41it out and sometimes it doesn't know the feeling. Five Anty Lives brought too
- 25:45part by General Hardware Lumber of Windfield, from kitchens to paint to decks,
- 25:48straight framing, wood, roofee metal, and anything else you may need.
- 25:51You'll find it a general hardware, lumber of Winfield, even Osborne for capital
- 25:53markets. They're always great talking with your Happy birthday. We'll talk again soon
- 25:57about some of these big events. I need to know about the training I
- 26:00need to go through for this macaroni and cheese contest. I mean, I
- 26:03need to know what exactly I need to do. You can do it.
- 26:06I didn't just google Joey Chestnut videos, I'm sure. So I do want
- 26:11to ask this, and I'll ask this Rick, And I'm also going to
- 26:12ask you to the Mayor's gonna be come up here momentarily. We have a
- 26:15lot of funny to him. You come on the show. But you know,
- 26:18the big news here was the passative Judge Tabbitt. On the Friday afternoon,
- 26:23she passed away after a battle with cancer. Any any thoughts in tabbot
- 26:27So, Judge Tabbitt was a longtime family friend, and I've had the opportunity
- 26:33to get there. I had the opportunity to get to know her quite a
- 26:36bit over the years, and I think everyone has a takeaway from the legacy
- 26:41that she left. But the one that's always sort of Reson resonated with me
- 26:45is you can be a lot of things, but be kind and the grace
- 26:51and humility that she lived her life is a model in which I try to
- 26:55try to live mine. And I I think that, you know, one
- 26:57of the best estimates I can leave to someone is that you know they showed
- 27:03you a better way to do something and it sticks with you. And I
- 27:07I can't imagine the people that knew her really well, what a loss it
- 27:14is. I mean, it's it's a tremendous loss for our community, and
- 27:18there is a Joanna Tabot sized hole left in Charleston today. But we were
- 27:25all better off or for the opportunity to know her, And that's that's really
- 27:30I think what's important. Very well put Evan, I appreciate as always you've
- 27:33been here, my friend. Keep doing great things over Capital Market. We'll
- 27:36talk again soon. Thanks a lot, Daved, thank you for having twenty

- 31:03Mayor a good one. A couple of news notes here real quick before
- 31:06we get to the mayor. You know we're not going to have a federal
- 31:07government shut down, at least not now. Temporary fix has worked out late
- 31:11Saturday night with all of about forty five minutes left on the clock, So
- 31:15we just basically kicked the can down the road for another month to month and
- 31:19a half. Hope you'll have more than that coming up a talk line at
- 31:22ten oh six, and I'm gonna get a little deeper into this tomorrow,
- 31:25but quickly before we get to the mayor Tomorrow night. It's gonna be a
- 31:27big night. You can weigh in on this two mayor. It's going to
- 31:29be a big night in Huntington at the Museum of Radio and Technology. And
- 31:32trust me, if you've ever been there, that titles kind of understated because
- 31:36there's so much more than that just going on. But tomorrow night at the
- 31:38Place is going to play host of the twenty twenty three induction ceremonies for this
- 31:42year's class with the Broadcasters Hall of Fame. And I'm happy to say that
- 31:47some folks from our building here at eleven eleven are going to be in tried
- 31:49tomorrow night. The boss, I mean the big boss of the Charleston cluster
- 31:53of WVRC Media, Joe Parsons, is going to be going in tomorrow and
- 31:57I understand this. It is gonna be the first time for this ever that
- 32:00a team will be inducted together. Stephen Jenny from our sister station FEE one
- 32:06hundred are going to be going in together. Others include Tom Taggert, the
- 32:08legendary pig Papa, Jay Jerald, and Mike Parsons no relationship Joe. Mike
- 32:13was a founder of the Mouthoneer Sports Network and he'll be forever tied to this
- 32:16company and of course the work he did with the SSAC as well. The
- 32:20ceremony free to attend. I'm going to be there tomorrow night, so I
- 32:22just want to say congratulations to all those folks going in to the Hall of
- 32:25Fame. So yeah, Mayor Amy Schueler, good one joins us. Now,
- 32:30good morning, how are you? Good morning? I'm wonderful. Can
- 32:31I just say how much I love seeing you in green and white at Marshall
- 32:34n I know, I know, I love it too. I love the
- 32:37games. And you know again, I'm not a football mom. I've been
- 32:39a hockey mom, but now I'm a football mom because I have a kid
- 32:45who plays in the Marshall Band Marching Thunder. Going to Marshall games is actually
- 32:51more about the entertainment and the other stuff than it is about the games.
- 32:55My husband turns to me halfway through and I said, I'm having a great
- 32:58time. He said, I told you. I told you. It's fun.
- 33:00They do the fireworks, they do the thunderclap. I got it together
- 33:05at the palms. It's a good thing and I love and I love what
- 33:08huff has done. And I talked about this in the simply because he's making
- 33:13it more than just about the game. And what I mean by that is
- 33:15he said when he came in, he said, there are people in the
- 33:16city talking about Huntington's or maybe the surrounding areas as well. They don't have
- 33:21money for a ticket, and he said, I want to do things outside
- 33:23the stadium for them, and he started doing that. The other thing he
- 33:25did that I absolutely love and it's absolutely brilliant, is he hired Christian Spears,
- 33:30who I think is absolutely amazing. He's the athletic director who then brought
- 33:35on other sled mister Sledder, who is the new band director. You know,
- 33:42they grew from ninety to one twenty five, and when I was talking
- 33:45to Christians Christian Spears, he said, we want to get to two twenty
- 33:50to twenty five, three hundred because they want to grow all programs, not
- 33:53just football and basketball, because students excel in a lot of different things.
- 33:58And so when you go to a football amo, by the way, the
- 34:00cheer squad, the dance troupe, the color guarden, they're amazing as well,
- 34:05and they make for a great experience. I love I love wearing my
- 34:07green and white, but I also have a lot of blue and gold.
- 34:10That's okay, So I got to wear of that all right. You can
- 34:13cheer for both and all the other I mean, we got all the other
- 34:15schools in airs. On a serious note, and we got some text I
- 34:19got a phone call and get two plus I guess some things. I definitely
- 34:21want to get into it. On a serious note, talk about the life
- 34:22and times and legacy and your recollections of Judge Tabbot, who we lost Friday
- 34:27to cancer. Yeah. I was talking to her sister yesterday about some of
- 34:30the preparations for her celebration of life this upcoming Thursday evening and Friday here in
- 34:37the city of Charleston, and we started laughing at things that she used to
- 34:44say or things that used to do. On my way back home from Huntington
- 34:47with my husband, my husband said, you know, it's very unique to
- 34:51find one person who crosses all spectrums who you can't find a person who doesn't
- 34:57say almost exactly the same thing about Judge tabt I love her. She's so
- 35:01kind, she's so thoughtful. Boy, she's fair, but she truly I
- 35:06said on my Facebook page something like she's an angel on earth. She lived
- 35:08her life christ Like. She really wanted the best for all people, all
- 35:15people. She wanted to be fair, she wanted to hold people accountable.
- 35:21But she she loved, loved, love this city, love this state,
- 35:24love this city. Was passionate about her friends, but her family. We
- 35:30had this thing that we used to do with each other because our and I
- 35:35think of Jeff, her boy, but her nephew, Jeff and I Sammy
- 35:39played sports together and we used to, you know, say there's Jeff on
- 35:44the field, there's Sammy on the field, and text and send videos.
- 35:47She was passionate about her family, and she loved her family. She treated
- 35:51this community like her family. Though. And one of my very good friends,
- 35:55doctor derra A Leah Flow, said, you know the thing I think
- 35:59that we can all do to honor Judge tabot Is should try to be more
- 36:05like her, to listen, to understand, to not rush to judgment,
- 36:08and to treat people with kindness and be more like how she would react to
- 36:14things. And so I think that is a great and a very tall task
- 36:17for all of us to do. But that's that's my marching order from now
- 36:22on. Five and Eli, I brought to you part of by husband's pizza

- 36:37I understand we have a call. Let's go to the phones. Dan,
- 36:39you're on with the mayor. Go ahead. Good morning. Thank you
- 36:43for taking my call. Yes, good morning, Mayor. Can you hear
- 36:46me? Okay, okay, she's got you. It is my understanding that
- 36:52there is a company located in Charleston, been here for a little while that
- 36:59recycle Glass. Are you familiar with that company? Yes, it is my
- 37:04understanding, and I want to make sure I got this right. That what
- 37:07they want to do is they want to provide a service in which they come
- 37:12to your residence or wherever and pick up your glass and charge you a feel.
- 37:19Do you know? Is that correct? Yeah? It's like smash glass
- 37:22or glass smash. Yeah. Okay, I have a lot of glass.
- 37:27I'll take it to them. They can come and get it. But I
- 37:30don't want to pay him to come and get it. Got you, I
- 37:34got you? Hey, Dan, do me a favor. You had a
- 37:37pen in your hand by chance, hold on one or a good memory?
- 37:42Yeah, or a good memory. I have a pen. Three four eight
- 37:45eight one seven four three four eight eight one seven four. And let me
- 37:49connect with you later on about this company. Okay, you want me to
- 37:54call you at that number? Yeah, I mean if you, I mean
- 37:57unless you want to give you a number of the air And I bet you
- 37:59don't. I wouldn't. I wouldn't advise that. Yeah. So three four
- 38:01eight eight one seven four, holler at me, leave your leave your number
- 38:06to either Tiffany or Andrew, and I'll shout right back at you. I
- 38:09appreciate your absolutely. I think you appreciate a meanyor City Council is happening tonight,
- 38:15and I had Councilman Chad Robinson on to talk about this last week,
- 38:19the discussion of PODAU, this public outdoor designated Areas, and I understand if
- 38:24it makes it out of committee tonight and goes to council, it would allow
- 38:28people, should they choose to, in certain areas of Charleston and on certain
- 38:31days, purchase a specially designed cup that they can fill with their favorite adult
- 38:37beverage if they choose it. Now, it's been a huge hit in Huntington.
- 38:39There was some apprehension to it there, which was to be expected.
- 38:44I was in Huntington a lot of the last several days and didn't seem to
- 38:47be a big deal. There's zero issues. Do you have an opinion on
- 38:51it? You know? I was in Huntington as well, and as everybody
- 38:54was lining up for the homecoming parade on Friday night, there were a couple
- 38:59establishments that had their PoTA cups there, and uh, we went and and
- 39:02got ourselves a beer and and walked literally two steps and you know, stood
- 39:07on the sidewalk and cheered on the game and had a beer and then wait
- 39:10till was over, and then three our cups and a recycling then and then
- 39:14went to dinner. It's working. I mean, it's small scale, right,
- 39:17It's a slow role on where we're going with this. Huntington has currently
- 39:23one area of the city more like the downtown area ish h. We are
- 39:29looking at three different areas right now, possibly four, which is city center
- 39:36downtown area, and the other is Bridge Road, which is a tighter area,
- 39:40Elk City a tighter area, and then the circumference of the capital market
- 39:45has been discussed. That is not in the current resolution, but that's something
- 39:50as I think that was on the discussion tab. Yeah, that was on
- 39:54the discussion and there are a couple of additional things on the discussion table.
- 39:58And that's what resolutions should be about, and that's what good government should be
- 40:00about. Right, discussion points, how do we how do we work together
- 40:04to make this happen. We wanted to take our time with this. We
- 40:07wanted to see what other cities were doing across the country. I have traveled
- 40:12to other cities with the intent too to see how they do this and how
- 40:16they do it. Well, it is not it is not what people think.
- 40:21It's a you know, big you know beer. It's not that you
- 40:22can't walk down the street with with a beer in your hand, can't walk
- 40:27to your car with you can't do any of those things. And so well,
- 40:30I'll say this and Chad said it. Councilmember Robin said did a great
- 40:35job on Friday show because I listened to it afterwards, and what he said
- 40:37was, you know any way that we can help small business. Well,
- 40:39since we got here four and a half years ago. That's exactly what we
- 40:43did. We hired a small business ambassador. So you know, you're not
- 40:46just wondering, why is that meeter not working? Outside my business? We
- 40:50have somebody that literally goes door to door. Hey, what do you got
- 40:52You got a problem? My lights out outside the parking lot. Oh my
- 40:55meter is not working. When are they going to fix this pothole? So,
- 40:59not only do we have a liaison, we do small business and have
- 41:01in the past one small business grants. This is just another thing that we
- 41:06can offer. Is it going to be the end all be all? I
- 41:09don't think so. Is it another little extra thing to have? So during
- 41:14holly Jolly brawli, you can, you know, grab grab the kids,
- 41:17get something to eat, grab an ice cream. If you want to freeze
- 41:21totally, grab a beer and go over and walk through the trees. You
- 41:24can, and you could do it legally, And that's what we that's what
- 41:28we want. And the businesses were the ones that approach you from what I
- 41:31understand, right, no pun intended. That's the seventies seventies beer references producer
- 41:37won't but you and I will get that, all right. So, but
- 41:39but It's also worth noting that if a business does not want to have this,
- 41:45does not want to participate, they don't have to. No. No,
- 41:47that's absolutely right. No. As a matter of fact, even the
- 41:50businesses that say, Amy, I love this, this is so great,
- 41:52but I own a retail shop, you know, soft items and expensive items
- 41:58and clothing and et cetera. I want people to know that I support it,
- 42:02but I just don't want you walking around and spilling a drink on my
- 42:06expensive dress. The answer is you bet. You absolutely can say no,
- 42:09thank you. The city is and Tina, who's absolutely amazing, has been
- 42:15working on as studying. We've been doing this for so long now, it
- 42:17seems like it's been forever. But the past couple of months looking at other
- 42:22cities, looking at the signage, I think that's really really important. So
- 42:25you know, before you walk through my door, hey, I serve,
- 42:29and you're more than welcome to bring your glass in here. Your cup not
- 42:31glass, by the way, the classic no thank you, I don't want
- 42:37any drinks in here. Appreciate that, or even hey, we support you,
- 42:42but please leave your cup at a table in the front. You know,
- 42:45And there are other businesses that I have not had a business call me.
- 42:49Not one in the City of Charleston in the past couple of months.
- 42:51I said, I don't want it. I've had folks say I don't understand
- 42:53it. Can I put a no sign in? I want to be supportive,
- 42:58but I don't serve it's it's not a problem. But again, here's
- 43:02here's the good news about city government. We're pretty flexible, right and so
- 43:07if there are changes that need to be made, if there are additions,
- 43:10we can do that. The most important thing is getting it right and getting
- 43:15it right the first time, and working with the ABCA to make sure that
- 43:19we are complying with what they need and we are being great communicators with our
- 43:24businesses so they have everything that they need on day one. The cups,
- 43:29the signage and oh by the way, Huntington did a very good job about
- 43:34posting. You know, you're entering a PODA area. Oh by the way,
- 43:37you're leaving a PODA area, signaling to me and you put your cup
- 43:39down. Yeah you can. That's what they That's what they do in Marietta,
- 43:43Ohio. That's areas outside Columbus Marietta, Ohio. We stole, I
- 43:46will say we well because we stole from a lot of different people who have
- 43:52already done it and done it for years. A great faq. Hey,
- 43:54here are the you know, here's some of the questions and answers that you
- 43:58may be one ring about. So I think communication, communication with anything.
- 44:02Dave, as you wont know, is king and so communicating with our businesses
- 44:07and communicating with folks. Listen, we also are going to make sure that
- 44:10we're enforcing this. This isn't going to be a free for all, folks.
- 44:13This isn't going to be it. This is going to be something that
- 44:15is added to businesses in the city of Charleston, but it's not gonna be
- 44:20a free for all. Five ATY Live brought to you parted by Meeks Realty

- 46:34Shuiler good one is here something else mayor that I heard as a proposal that
- 46:37would, if enacted, put some guidelines on the access to council members while
- 46:43meetings are being conducted, talking about city council, talking about them. Yeah,
- 46:46so it is a it's a public access rule. As a matter of
- 46:52fact, the City of Charleston is one of I don't know anybody else that
- 46:58doesn't have floor rules, meaning you and I during a House or Senate session
- 47:02underneath the capitol down you and I can't during one of their sessions just casually
- 47:07stroll down the aisle and go and talk to a senator or delegate right in
- 47:10the middle, or media running with a camera in their face and shoving a
- 47:15microphone underneath. You're not allowed to do that on most government public floors because,
- 47:19by the way, we're there to host a meeting, we're there to
- 47:22provide access. We're there to make sure that everybody can hear and speak and
- 47:29before and after especially, But this is a proposal that was brought forth by
- 47:36a majority of council members. As a matter of fact, I was talking
- 47:38to an anchor last night at ten thirty at night on the telephone about this.
- 47:43This will be the way that we have not only this resolution set up,
- 47:46are the things that this administration did. We're going to have a maltbox.
- 47:50We're going to make sure that you can not only hear us better,
- 47:52but see us better. And that's the public and oh yeah, by the
- 47:57way, the media too, because right now we shove the media in a
- 48:00corner. You can't see half the side of the room unless you get up
- 48:04and walk over. Sometimes you can't hear from the microphones. Listen. City
- 48:07Hall was built in nineteen twenty one. It's gorgeous. Which can't hear and
- 48:15you can't see well. And so we're going to reconfigure the chairs as best
- 48:17as we can. Put a malt box in. Explain that, I mean,
- 48:22I know what it means. Yeah. Sorry, So, by the
- 48:25way, because I was in the media, that's what I did before I
- 48:29did this, and I was a communications director, having access to the media
- 48:32is incredibly important to me, incredibly important. Well, they can't hear right
- 48:37now, and so a maltboxes it's basically a multi output, single source that
- 48:44you can hear. You can you can plug your microphone into this box and
- 48:49reporters and videographers do it all the time. And you can actually hear what
- 48:53the audio. You can get connected to the audio stream, meaning you can
- 48:58download record every single thing that's going through that malbox, because right now you're
- 49:02picking up NAT's sound and what we heard natural sound from your camera, But
- 49:07what we're hearing from folks is amy. When I'm sitting there at the table
- 49:10and their people laughing or talking or pushing or shoving, I can't hear anything.
- 49:15I get nothing. And so on my NATS sound, I can't even
- 49:17use my NAT sound because it's the voices of somebody else. So we're going
- 49:21to make it fair for everyone, and we're going to make media actually get
- 49:25what they need, which is sound and video of council members. We're also
- 49:32going to look at by the way, my very first council meeting was the
- 49:37very first time we had live streaming, very first time. Accessibility and accountability
- 49:43is important to me very first time, and I got to give credit where
- 49:45credit is due. President Becky separately helped with that. But the first time
- 49:49that I stepped in as mayor was the first time that the public could actually
- 49:52watch the full council meeting online. Because it was important to us to get
- 49:58it done and to make sure that the moment that we stepped in there,
- 50:01everything was available to the public. So we're going to make it better.
- 50:06But we also, I'll be honest with you, we've had council members say
- 50:09that they've been scared. This is a you know, we all have our
- 50:14own different opinions. That's great, but when council members and folks are feeling
- 50:20threatened, are feeling intimidated, there has to be As I said to this
- 50:25who is a dear friend and an anchor friend of mine, my job is
- 50:29to protect them while they're sitting there and protecting them right now is not happening
- 50:34if they don't know that somebody's coming up from behind them. We're going to
- 50:36change the way that we're seating. It is a very tight, beautiful chamber,
- 50:40right you've been there, beautiful, beautiful, but it's very tight.
- 50:45We have folks with accessibility issues. We've got to keep the aisles clear,
- 50:50and we're going to have some order to a body in a house that's working.
- 50:53We're there to work. We are on the clock and working. It
- 50:58doesn't have anything to do with when people say, oh, it's gonna limit
- 51:00me, No, it isn't. As a matter of fact, it's going
- 51:02to make it better for media. They're going to be able to see all
- 51:06the council's faces. Most important, they're going to be able to hear because
- 51:09as you well know, Dave television, you know, field producers or videographers
- 51:15sometimes they've got ten minutes, come in, grab sound, you know,
- 51:19grab it, you know, sound bite from somebody and run out the door.
- 51:22We'll make sure that they're able to do that well. And I think
- 51:24it's worth noting. I mean, I had somebody say to me. Somebody
- 51:28said, well, the media is outraged about this. I haven't talked to
- 51:30a single member of the actual conventional media that's upset about this. We're not
- 51:32upset about it. Here. Talk to a good friend of mine who works
- 51:36and we're fine with it. I mean, you know, by the way,
- 51:39I think people want to make it seem like it is and they're you
- 51:42know, a couple Oh this is gonna No, it's not. If you
- 51:45talk to the folks who are in it and say, hey, I'm gonna
- 51:47I got your multbox. Hey we're gonna do a different type of seatings who
- 51:51can get not only your NAT sound, but you're direct inputs. Talk to
- 51:53the people who are in the media. Folks who are you know? By
- 51:58the way, we don't have any problem with we we you know, the
- 52:00television stations and you guys and the newspaper. It's absolutely it's seamless and we
- 52:06have great, great working relationships with all of you. I had some questions.
- 52:09I did not get to all the text. Sorry but sorry, I
- 52:13gotta I gotta talk to you about landfill because somebody keeps texting me about a
- 52:15land and Charleston. Can we get maybe if not, you maybe get map
- 52:20sut or somebody out later this week to talk about landfill. We'll talk about
- 52:22after the show. All right, may are good one. I appreciate you
- 52:24being here. Thank you so much. In Ev and Osborne from the Capitol
- 52:27Market and also Rick Cabinder as well. Coming up on the show tomorrow,
