Transcript
- 0:00This marks the 24th anniversary of September 11th.
- 0:03In the chaos and in the utter destruction of a madness, sheer
- 0:12madness of the day, it was Hatsola's finest hour.
- 0:18None of your business, Oshi. None of Your Business, Michael.
- 0:21It's the None of Your Business podcast hosted by Michael
- 0:24Anoshi. Welcome back everybody to
- 0:27another amazing episode of the None of Your Business podcast.
- 0:29I'm your host, Michael Greenfield.
- 0:30Joined with me is our Co host, Oshi Schwartz.
- 0:33And we are here with a very special guest and a special
- 0:36episode. But before we get to that, thank
- 0:37you to all our subscribers, our listeners, all the comments.
- 0:40We're taking them seriously. We're loving the growth.
- 0:42We appreciate Prime Source production team and of course,
- 0:45our newest sponsor, Twillery, Twillery, Twillery, which has
- 0:49about two new stores now all around New York, I think in
- 0:52Lakewood and in the Five Towns. And they are making noise.
- 0:54So good luck to them on their endeavors and we hope to see
- 0:57everybody with the Twillery suit and shirt soon.
- 1:00With us today is Hot School Bennett.
- 1:02Hot School, welcome to the program.
- 1:04Pleasure to be. Here.
- 1:04We appreciate having you here. Today is a very special day for
- 1:08us because normally we don't ear the same episode like 2 days
- 1:12before. And we're going to do that this
- 1:13week because this marks the 24th anniversary of September 11th.
- 1:18And I was on a hunt to find someone that was a first
- 1:21responder, someone that I would be able to discuss the moments
- 1:26that happened and what led to the world that we have today.
- 1:32So much to cover, so much to talk about.
- 1:34We have a little thing that we like to call here.
- 1:36Chachi PT said, what about you? So first I will shut off my
- 1:40phone. I'm.
- 1:41Just curious when you're going to learn like.
- 1:43By the way, this is Ellie Landau.
- 1:44We just got engaged last night. Like we have to say Miles.
- 1:47Of later. We're a little bit busy right
- 1:48now. You're saying I shouldn't pick?
- 1:49Up. I'm like 90 episodes in 180.
- 1:52At what point are you going to turn your phone on?
- 1:54It's never on Ringer. That's The funny thing before I
- 1:56come here. Right, it's not.
- 1:57My phone in general is not on ring.
- 1:59Only the last 40 times. Yeah, only when I come in, I'm
- 2:01like, I want to bother Ushi, so I turn it on.
- 2:03We have this little thing we like to call Chachi Peti, said.
- 2:05What have you ever Chachi Peti yourself?
- 2:07Never. Not myself, no.
- 2:08Oh. OK, all right.
- 2:09You use it though you're from my.
- 2:11I'm just learning how to use it. Hosko Bennett doesn't just
- 2:14remember 911. He lived it, stood in the middle
- 2:18of the chaos and turned crisis into leadership.
- 2:20That is the number one thing. It starts off.
- 2:22That's true. That's what it says.
- 2:23Yeah, you tell us. Does that make sense?
- 2:27That's what ChatGPT says, Yeah. Fascinating.
- 2:29Yeah, it says more. Hold on tight.
- 2:31While most people talk about community, he's been quietly
- 2:34building them brick by brick, policy by policy, family by
- 2:37family. I like this guy.
- 2:40What does that mean? Policy by policy, Insurance
- 2:44business or something? What does that mean?
- 2:46Allstate, you're in good hands. Politics is she?
- 2:50Politics. Policies.
- 2:51Oh, OK, listen, policy can very easily be there.
- 2:54Family by family, policy by policy.
- 2:57I hear insurance. I don't know.
- 2:58OK, It's a good marketing stick, I guess, for insurance people.
- 3:01Florida real estate agents will tell you about palm trees.
- 3:04Klotzka will tell you about Torah schools, schools and
- 3:07survival. The real blueprint behind the
- 3:09migration. Wow.
- 3:10That's going to be an interesting topic, by the way,
- 3:12because there's something happening potentially in New
- 3:14York and it's something worthwhile of a conversation.
- 3:17It's worthy of a podcast time all on it's own, really.
- 3:22Conversation. Absolutely.
- 3:23Yeah, and, and I want to get into that in a minute.
- 3:26He's the guy politicians call when they need a device and the
- 3:29guy parents call when they need answers.
- 3:33Wow, that's a lot of pressure. That's pretty amazing.
- 3:35Actually, my wife. Bottom line, Hot School is
- 3:40living proof that leadership isn't just the title, it's a
- 3:42test, and he's been passing it for decades.
- 3:45Fascinating. OK, I'm humbled and not sure I
- 3:49could add to that right now. I mean, listen, I, you know, I
- 3:53there's so much I want to start off with.
- 3:54Michael, could we could we talk a little bit about September
- 3:5811th over here? Because I know that he has a lot
- 4:00of experience from my understanding, right as my
- 4:02understanding he was there when when this all went down.
- 4:05So I'd love to hear a little bit about that.
- 4:08You know, we, we all know somebody that will remember
- 4:10where they were when JFK was assassinated, right?
- 4:13You know, I remember when I was when OJ Simpson's trial came to
- 4:17an end, then he was acquitted. You know, like there's certain
- 4:19things that we remember in our life.
- 4:21Was that the white Bronco? Exactly.
- 4:23But the, the one thing that stands out that I think that is
- 4:27far beyond all that. Of course, we have October 7th,
- 4:29which doesn't compare to any of these things.
- 4:31But September 11th, I think also, if you ask people where
- 4:34were you that day, I don't think people remember where they were
- 4:37the day before. It's because like, it's just
- 4:40such a blur to me. I'm curious, before we jump into
- 4:43September 11th, what was your life like before September 11th,
- 4:47September 10th, and before? I lived in Flatbush living my
- 4:51daily life, going to work, building a business as a young
- 4:54guy 24 years ago. So regular guy going to biz,
- 4:59going to work every day. That's all a member trying to do
- 5:02some good things in my life, trying to give back, but
- 5:04certainly not as involved as I am.
- 5:07You know, today and again, it was a you know, September 11th
- 5:12was a beautiful I met I can I still picture the the beautiful
- 5:17beautiful. It was primary day.
- 5:18I think so. I think it was primary, right Is
- 5:20that? Possible it's possible you have
- 5:22Stephen Hulchek primary day yes, take take us through that
- 5:25experience. So I it was a nice morning.
- 5:28I do remember it was. Actually, Arab or Shoshanna, a
- 5:30couple weeks before Shoshanna or maybe a week before Shoshanna
- 5:33Sleekas, we were saying Sleekas I that I do remember.
- 5:36So I was draw. I draw, I it.
- 5:38Was a primary election in New York State?
- 5:40Yes, busy day. Yeah, but, you know, I remember
- 5:43Freddie Ferrer versus Mike Bloomberg.
- 5:45I think Bloomberg had that in the bag.
- 5:48Sorry. Common comedy used to work for
- 5:50Freddie. Joke about it now it's 24 years
- 5:55later. Hard to hard to wrap your head
- 5:59around it. So I, I've talked about this
- 6:02publicly many, many times. I've been asked, I've spoken to
- 6:06crowds literally everywhere in the world on this, on this
- 6:10topic. Our grandparents, their defining
- 6:18day of their lives, if they were in America or for the world, was
- 6:23Pearl Harbor. The day that the American, you
- 6:26know, United States of America was sucked into World War 2
- 6:30officially. For our parents, I believe a
- 6:35defining moment, so I've heard, was the day that President
- 6:39Kennedy was assassinated. Again, a defining moment for our
- 6:45generation, unless someone has a better day, which I would
- 6:49challenge for us, a defining moment was September 11th for so
- 6:55many reasons. So I, we, we can go into my
- 6:58personal experience, we can go into why that is.
- 7:00It's up to you guys I. I'd love to hear your personal
- 7:02experience first. Just take us to where you.
- 7:04Were that morning I I dive in sleekas.
- 7:06I dive in in Robert Shershel in on Ocean Ave. for many many many
- 7:12years. Bucksham 30 years, second
- 7:16minion. I have daphiomi.
- 7:18Before the minion we said sleekas.
- 7:21The day ran late because it was Sleekas.
- 7:25During those days, I used to learn with my father Mishnabura
- 7:30in the car. My office was in Williamsburg,
- 7:33my warehouse. Again, I was building a business
- 7:36and I would drive down Flatbush Ave. and get to Williamsburg
- 7:40every day, same way that morning, because it was Sleekas.
- 7:45A friend of mine, his name is Yasi Yarowitz Zakharin Levraka.
- 7:50He subsequently passed away, asked for a ride.
- 7:54He worked not far from me and I would drop him off sometimes
- 7:57invariably at at at his little place.
- 8:01I'm learning with my father, Mishna Bora, and I'm driving
- 8:05down Flatbush Ave. and and they always was able to see the twin
- 8:09towers straight ahead. My hot solar radio was on.
- 8:13I'm talking to my dad. We're learning.
- 8:16My father's a doctor, so I got to like get 10 minutes into his
- 8:19schedule and I hear on the hot solar radio that a plane, that's
- 8:23one of the members, a friend of mine, Aaron Rothman, F97, he
- 8:28called in a call and I heard him sort of muff.
- 8:31He was like choppy, but I heard him.
- 8:33He thinks a plane hit the top of the twin towers.
- 8:38One of them, I think they dispatched an ambulance there.
- 8:44And I don't remember the specifics of of the
- 8:47conversation. I sort of ignored it.
- 8:51I'm not in Manhattan. I'm not heading to Manhattan.
- 8:54Not my call, but I hear it OK, Still driving few minutes later.
- 9:01I don't know what's the difference.
- 9:02Stef will tell us. How far apart were the two
- 9:05planes? One in. 10 minutes and the other
- 9:0710 minutes. So. 12 minutes.
- 9:11I'm just guessing. I I Stef.
- 9:12Will it was very short we'll. Find out in a minute and I'm
- 9:18still learning with my dad and I hear a second plane.
- 9:24Now it's all hands on deck and I now know it's not a random
- 9:31situation. Were you listening to the radio
- 9:34at the time? Did I?
- 9:34Know that at this point I told my father what's going on.
- 9:38Now you have to know my dad. Shut off your radio.
- 9:43Let's learn. You should never ignore your
- 9:48father. Always listen to your father.
- 9:52I said, Dad, I got to go. I have to finish.
- 9:54I have to have to hang up. I hung up.
- 9:57I started heading. They called for everybody.
- 9:59That's all the call for everybody.
- 10:01All hands on deck. Everybody.
- 10:02How do they call for everyone? What is this?
- 10:03What does that sound like? I'll send you the recording all
- 10:08members who it's possible to go away from the field.
- 10:11The second building is about to go down.
- 10:13It was top actually the best dispatcher that Hatsala has, the
- 10:17most professional and the most well known someone who has a
- 10:21seasoned seasoned professional who yield Dutch W 19.
- 10:27The recording is now it's going through the Hall of Fame.
- 10:30It's such a I've heard the recordings many, many times,
- 10:34basically sending resources, ambulances from different
- 10:37neighborhoods. We now know we're dealing with
- 10:38something very, very, very unprecedented, unusual.
- 10:43OK, I'm heading towards the city now.
- 10:46I turned on my lights and sirens, heading towards the
- 10:49city. I come to the Manhattan Bridge,
- 10:53standing still, traffic going towards the bridge, but like as
- 11:00I'm coming onto the bridge, one of the big ESUNYPD trucks flies
- 11:05by me full throttle, sees booking and he goes into the
- 11:11opposite lane. The oncoming he goes to the
- 11:15opposite lane. I go right behind him.
- 11:17So where you couldn't get into Manhattan from the other side, I
- 11:20was on the bridge and over the bridge in a minute I pull into
- 11:25lower Manhattan. I follow him all the way, as
- 11:28close as I could get. Never in a million years
- 11:31thinking to myself what's going to come.
- 11:36I first recollection come out of my car.
- 11:40My friend Yossa Yurowitz has stolen the car.
- 11:42So I said help me. I took all my equipment out of
- 11:45the car, my trauma bag, my oxygen bag, whatever else I
- 11:49where. Did you pull over your car?
- 11:51I. Found a spot that I thought
- 11:52would be reasonably. How far from the scene itself?
- 11:56A block and a half away from the world.
- 11:57So very close. Two blocks away.
- 11:59Yeah. OK.
- 12:00My first recollection got out of my car.
- 12:04I see on the floor. Fascinating.
- 12:06I need to think about is I see 1000 pair of shoes.
- 12:12Shoes. Really, really people ditch
- 12:15their shoes. Shoes.
- 12:17I just see shoes everywhere. Strangest thing later it dawned
- 12:23on me, people were so terrified. People were so afraid, so unsure
- 12:29of what was going on. These are old executives.
- 12:33The men are wearing leather shoes, the women are wearing
- 12:37heels. You can't run in those shoes.
- 12:41And people were running for their lives.
- 12:44They ditched their shoes and just ran, ran for dear life.
- 12:48So that was my first recollection.
- 12:52I gather myself, I see my distance.
- 12:56I'm cognizant that I don't want to get too close to the World
- 13:00Trade Center itself. And as I'm being cognizant of
- 13:05it, I see smoky debris on the floor around me, like a little
- 13:10bit further in, like parts of planes smoking.
- 13:14So now, you know, you don't want to get too close if parts of
- 13:17airplanes are falling down. Again, I didn't know what size
- 13:20airplane this was. How could you possibly know?
- 13:23We had reports of two airplanes going into the World Trade
- 13:25Center. OK, that's enough for me.
- 13:27I'm convinced. So now what does hot solemn
- 13:30number do? I put on my green vest like
- 13:33transform from citizen to to to hot solemn man.
- 13:37OK, Somehow, someway, I, I believe it was the corner of
- 13:43church and Trinity if I remember correctly.
- 13:47Again, it's been 24 years. People seem to be gravitating
- 13:52towards this area because it's a little bit away and there's a
- 13:55huge amount of steps going up to the actual, whether it's a
- 13:59church or I. I'm assuming it's a church, like
- 14:01an old style church with like 200 steps.
- 14:05And people are sitting there and I just look around and people
- 14:09are just dazed glass, bloody, gasping for air.
- 14:17Multiple patients with multiple different issues.
- 14:23Some people are cut, other people are are having trouble
- 14:26breathing, other people are just terrified.
- 14:31And what does that solar member do?
- 14:32That solar member just jumps in. Start tending to people.
- 14:36And a few of my that solar members were there for whatever
- 14:38reason and we sort of like unofficially, but collectively
- 14:42came together and just started treating patients.
- 14:45And I remembered something. So, so on you and I see the
- 14:48pictures. I remember I was cognizant,
- 14:54let's say it this way, of the fact that I'm wearing a
- 14:57yarmulke, a green vest, that solar vest and my Titus.
- 15:04I just, I was cognizant of it even in this incredible
- 15:11upheaval, turmoil. Chaos.
- 15:14Chaos, Absolutely. I so desperately wanted to make
- 15:18a Kiddushesham, and we were successful in that.
- 15:26There's no question about it. Anyone we treated, anyone that
- 15:30we interacted with. Now my friend Yossi Yurowitz was
- 15:34just hanging with. Me, not a hot tall guy, not a
- 15:36tall guy, wanted to get to his office.
- 15:38Yeah, well, that wasn't happening, right?
- 15:40What did he do? In the back of my car, I don't
- 15:44remember why I had kept Remember the old disposable cameras.
- 15:48I have a disposable camera. I'm not tall, a member.
- 15:50I come on to crazy things. I'm not the greatest
- 15:53photographer in the world, nor am I interested in it.
- 15:56He grabbed the the camera and he just started snapping pictures
- 16:00and some of the pictures that are of today well known pictures
- 16:04of 911 burning, building us treating these patients as
- 16:09pictures of this of this day, of this moment.
- 16:13Otherwise it'd be just in my memory, in my, in my mind.
- 16:16He actually took pictures of, OK, we moved from this area to a
- 16:26different area. The cops moved us off of the,
- 16:28the steps for whatever reason. And we moved to Broadway right
- 16:34around the corner. And we moved to a, we, we
- 16:38created a triage area where ambulances were starting to come
- 16:42down Broadway towards downtown. And we set up in front of a
- 16:46bunch of stores. It was Broadway corner John
- 16:49Street and we were treating patients and there are pictures
- 16:53of this. Literally people were bringing,
- 16:55cops were bringing us people. Again, all these you have to
- 16:57remember the World Trade Center has thousands of people who work
- 17:02in the towers and, and the surrounding buildings,
- 17:05thousands, thousands, Wall Street area, well, Trade Center
- 17:09area, you're talking about 10s of thousands of people just
- 17:13working in this area. So there are nowhere to go.
- 17:16They're they're flipping out. And we again started to treat
- 17:19patients. We heard from the police, from
- 17:25some of the law enforcement that the Pentagon was hit.
- 17:29We heard that another plane was coming.
- 17:32You know, we heard a lot of different misinformation.
- 17:34So basically to warn us, this is an on this is an ongoing
- 17:38situation. What's now may not be.
- 17:40And what's going to be 5 or 10 minutes into this entire
- 17:44situation, I heard a whoosh. To me, it sounded like an
- 17:50incoming plane, like a plane is landing on our head.
- 17:55I had no idea what it was, but something was happening.
- 17:59This was a subway train coming into a station. 1000 of them at
- 18:04one time. That's how loud it was.
- 18:07Terrifying. Whoosh.
- 18:10Subsequently, oh, let's keep going.
- 18:13This whoosh transformed itself into what you now know if you
- 18:18ever see the video. That black smoke coming towards
- 18:22us. The whoosh was the building
- 18:26pancaking coming down. The second I heard this whoosh I
- 18:31knew we had to get out of this area.
- 18:34Now the police had set up a Do not enter with yellow tape.
- 18:42They. Mean a barricade you.
- 18:45Know they barricade us us in so we could work and not add my hot
- 18:49solar radio on my belt. I turned, I heard this whoosh,
- 18:55saw the smoke started to run. My hot solar radio got caught on
- 19:03the tape and I'm and I can't get out.
- 19:08I'm stuck and I'm a pretty strong guy.
- 19:11So I give a like a huge like like nothing's going to hold me
- 19:14back. I'm going to I'm running for my
- 19:16life and I run and I accelerated flips off my belt.
- 19:20This is relevant for later in this conversation.
- 19:24And I lose it and I keep running.
- 19:28I'm running. Smoke is chasing me at the very
- 19:32last second. I run up John St. #11 John St.
- 19:36I still remember the address and the door sort of opens like the
- 19:43front door or the lobby door of this office building.
- 19:47And at the last second, I jump in.
- 19:52I take a deep breath. I have no idea.
- 19:53Like this is the most unbelievable, traumatic
- 19:57experience of my life. I look around the floor of the
- 20:02lobby. What's what's in this lobby?
- 20:05I see about 30 to 50 people huddling and shaking on the
- 20:10lobby floor like this. I've, I, I I'm still not sure
- 20:15who they are, what they are. Where am I?
- 20:18OK, I get my grips. I get my bearings.
- 20:22I go to the front door. Now I want to see what's going
- 20:25on outside of this lobby door picture.
- 20:29I'm in the lobby. There's lights.
- 20:31There are people, the lobby glass door, 'cause every
- 20:36building has a glass door. I look at it, it's pitch black.
- 20:41I open up the door, like to peek outside.
- 20:47Blackness, total darkness. All I hear in the distance.
- 20:53Nothing except car alarms. Remember the old car alarms?
- 20:59That's all I hear. I had no idea what it was, no
- 21:03idea what happened. As if the world ended the
- 21:07apocalypse. Yes, without knowing that it's
- 21:09the apocalypse. I thought that at this point I
- 21:18recognized that a building fell down.
- 21:20One of the tall buildings fell down.
- 21:23One of the World Trade Center buildings, twin towers fell.
- 21:27I had no way to know that it fell this way.
- 21:30I thought it fell that way. Why wouldn't I?
- 21:34Building was actually created to go down this way, not this way.
- 21:40I thought that the building that I'm in, the building fell right
- 21:43on top, and the only reason why we weren't crushed was because
- 21:46it fell on top of the building that we're in, because
- 21:49everything around me is black. I look up, I say the following
- 21:54words. I say Hashem, I'm in trouble.
- 22:04Please help me. I go back deeper into the lobby
- 22:14if to remember I'm no longer Joe Citizen regular guy.
- 22:21I'm that's all, a man. People are depending on you.
- 22:24I'm wearing a green vest, as if the green vest prepares me to
- 22:28know what to do and they're all looking at me.
- 22:33What do we do? You're an official.
- 22:35Right. The problem was we couldn't stay
- 22:37in the lobby because the smoke, if you remember, the black smoke
- 22:43was seeping into the lobby and it made the breathing very
- 22:46difficult. So we had to move.
- 22:51One of the 50 people in the lobby was an undercover
- 22:55narcotics cop, and the only way that I knew that he was a cop
- 22:59'cause he was wearing a windbreaker that said NYPD on
- 23:02it, he was wearing shorts. September, it was hot.
- 23:05It was a nice day. He looks at me, I look at him,
- 23:09and we have to devise a plan now to take care of these 30 to 50
- 23:13people. I don't remember the exact
- 23:15number. We're in charge now.
- 23:17These are our charges. We got to figure out how to take
- 23:20them to safety. So forget about the fact, let's
- 23:23go back. I have no outside radio.
- 23:25I have absolutely no idea what's going on.
- 23:28There was no more cell phone service, which I had my cell
- 23:30phone because if you remember, the cell phone antennas are on
- 23:36top of the building that just came down.
- 23:40So I am completely in the dark physically, metaphorically and
- 23:46communicatively. I have nobody to talk to.
- 23:50I'm by myself. We scout this go up to the next
- 23:56floor, next floor in the by steps, who takes the steps in
- 24:00the in the Manhattan office building, The 2nd floor was
- 24:03nothing, It was just like equipment, but the third floor
- 24:07began the offices can't use an elevator.
- 24:10I wouldn't dare use an elevator. First of all, I have 30-40
- 24:12people here. I have no idea what I can't
- 24:15scout up. He and I see an office.
- 24:21It's untouched. It's locked.
- 24:22Remember, it's 9:00 in the morning.
- 24:23They didn't open up for business yet.
- 24:27The door's locked. We can't get the door open.
- 24:30Force the door. Force the door.
- 24:31Force the door. Can't get it open.
- 24:34In these office buildings, you take the fire extinguisher.
- 24:38It's not a fire extinguisher. It's not an old fashioned fire
- 24:40extinguisher. They have this hose, this long
- 24:43hose. I take the long hose in the back
- 24:45of the hose. I try to smash the door open.
- 24:48I can't get the door open. This narcotics officer says to
- 24:51me, stand back, seen out of a movie, stand back, takes out his
- 24:55gun, two shots, makes a hole in the door and we stick our hand
- 25:00through the shots, turn the door.
- 25:03We get in the door, walk in the office, clean, big, good air,
- 25:10air conditioning, running water, working telephones.
- 25:15We go back down, take this entire group and her shepherd
- 25:21them to safety. What safety?
- 25:25Safety is the third floor of this building in this office.
- 25:30And for the next half an hour, the world calmed down.
- 25:35I called my wife, told her I'm alive, begged me to come home.
- 25:39I said I can't. I called my mother, told her I'm
- 25:43alive, she begged me to come home.
- 25:45I told her I can't and I hung up.
- 25:50I ended up after half an hour. They were all fine at that
- 25:55point. Daylight returned to downtown or
- 26:00daylight Smokey daylight, but at least daylight have to remember
- 26:04this huge black smoke that everybody now knows famously
- 26:10started to dissipate. I ended up hitching a ride on a
- 26:14passing ambulance and took this ambulance to Beth Israel
- 26:20Hospital. I figure I could help out in the
- 26:23hospital just figure out a safe spot which is about 20 blocks
- 26:27down. Beth Israel is like was like 18
- 26:29or 18 E 18th or E 19th if I remember correctly, maybe I
- 26:33don't remember pull up with this ambulance.
- 26:36It was a metropolitan ambulance to Beth Israel hospital.
- 26:41The entire hospital was outside of the hospital with 100
- 26:45stretchers. Waiting.
- 26:47That's what hospitals do in an emergency.
- 26:52Waiting. Waiting.
- 26:57No patients, Everybody's dead. The sheer enormity of absorbing
- 27:10this scene. Doctors, nurses, gurneys a
- 27:15hospital waiting to help, waiting to heal for patients
- 27:21that never came. Wow.
- 27:26Either everybody was dead or they made it out and they were
- 27:28fine. They didn't.
- 27:29They were fine, but they were not coming by ambulance.
- 27:32They're not going to hospital. They didn't know that.
- 27:34I don't know if anybody was. Everybody was fine because they
- 27:37were all over the place. People were by the pier.
- 27:39Now, subsequently, we know they were going to on a boat to New
- 27:42Jersey. They were going everywhere.
- 27:44But that was my experience, of course, because I can't sit
- 27:48still and I have what to offer and I'm here.
- 27:53I hitch another ambulance, go right back downtown again.
- 27:57I ended up transporting 3 or 4 firefighters to the hospital and
- 28:03then I went back again. So I remember one of the names
- 28:07of firefighters, whatever it was.
- 28:12At this point, jet fighters are flying over lower Manhattan.
- 28:15You know America's at. War.
- 28:18It's the war zone right now, absolute war zone.
- 28:19Are the streets like loud and you hear people crying all over
- 28:25the place like it just like your mind?
- 28:29'S completely crazy again. They were advising, you know,
- 28:34buildings are not secure. Everything's shaky now
- 28:38everything you have to recognize we we're we're New Yorkers.
- 28:41So we're accustomed to a skyline, we're accustomed to the
- 28:44buildings. They're here all of a sudden
- 28:46something has disrupted like an earthquake, literally like an
- 28:50earthquake, man made earthquake. And so you don't know what's
- 28:54coming next. We already have two fallen
- 28:56towers. They said other buildings were
- 28:58not stable. Ultimately, end of the day,
- 29:00other towers did come down, were taken down.
- 29:03I remember the Woolworth build. I mean, there are a lot of
- 29:05buildings in the area. There were suspect.
- 29:07And so they warned us to be careful.
- 29:09Don't make sure that you know, again, make sure you know where
- 29:12you are. At this point it was midday, mid
- 29:16afternoon already. I, I, I was exhausted.
- 29:21I did as as much as I could do that day.
- 29:23I also was cognizant of the fact that the air was not clean.
- 29:27I remember that the air was not clean.
- 29:30This plays a role years later with 911 disease, with 9/11
- 29:37respiratory disease. I was cognizant of it that day
- 29:41and I wondered to myself, wow, this air is really not clean.
- 29:47Just one more thought. I ended up getting back home.
- 29:53I lost touch with Yasuyurowitz. I did not know if he was alive
- 29:57or dead. He didn't know if I was alive or
- 29:59dead. It was pretty frightening.
- 30:02At a certain point he made it out and he came to my house.
- 30:08I didn't see him out. I was probably in the shower.
- 30:11He dropped off the 11 out of the two bags that he had been
- 30:15charged with. He dropped it off, looked at my
- 30:17wife and said here, he told me not to lose it, turned around
- 30:22and went home. I never went back and I did not
- 30:30go back to the area for a couple of years.
- 30:35I couldn't. I couldn't for me personally
- 30:46changed my worldview, changed how my view on terrorism,
- 30:51changed my view on the world, impacted me significant way.
- 30:59Thunder scared me for a long time.
- 31:03Low flying planes terrified me for a long time. 2 weeks later
- 31:07there was a plane crash in Bell Harbor.
- 31:10Look it up Steph, which all that's all numbers ran to this
- 31:15plane crash. I did not and had a very
- 31:20significant impact on me in a mental way.
- 31:25Didn't change how I looked, how I operated, but it changed me.
- 31:35It's not just where were you the day before, who were you the day
- 31:38before, and who were you after? So for every single younger
- 31:46American who doesn't think that 911 has anything to do with
- 31:52them, and it's a blurp in history, I have some news for
- 31:57you. Every single time you fly on an
- 32:00airplane and you got to take off your belt and you have to take
- 32:05the liquids out of your bag and you get randomly searched and
- 32:11the whole exercise, and I travel a lot, I fly a lot.
- 32:15And this entire TSA, what we know today exercise, I'm waiting
- 32:19on line going through security and blah, blah, blah.
- 32:23They can thank the perpetrators of 911 because that didn't exist
- 32:29in the United States of America before 9:11.
- 32:34That's first of all. Second of all, America was at
- 32:39war for 20 years in Afghanistan and Iraq and the outgrowth of
- 32:47the politics. I don't want to get into it, but
- 32:50America was at war and we lost 10s of thousands of soldiers in
- 32:57Afghanistan and Iraq because of 911.
- 33:01Let's let's be honest about that.
- 33:08A rough day. Crazy, man.
- 33:12You know, I always see September 11th on TV in the history books,
- 33:18right? I'm hearing it now for the first
- 33:21time, I think from anybody that described it to me, that was
- 33:24there. And it's just, it hits home
- 33:25differently. It hits, it feels more real.
- 33:29I feel very connected to it. Like as you're talking about it,
- 33:32I'm visioning myself walking the street at that moment and seeing
- 33:36what you're depicting and what you saw.
- 33:39It's surreal and it's not that long ago.
- 33:41I know 25 years sounds like a long time, but it feels like it
- 33:44was yesterday. I remember exactly where I was
- 33:47in September. I remember exactly the moment
- 33:50and who told me what was going on.
- 33:52I, I, I remember it all. But there are thousands of
- 33:55people that share your experience and that have some
- 33:59type of story to tell about that.
- 34:01Do we know how many from Jews there were at the towers when
- 34:07this happened? And how many from Jews perished,
- 34:10unfortunately. I don't have the number.
- 34:11I do remember at least a couple of names.
- 34:13Beagleizens, me Beagleizen, who I knew I forgot his first name's
- 34:19Al Manowitz. There were a couple of famous
- 34:21stories of people who of of of from families that that that
- 34:25suffered. There was there was aguna
- 34:28questions and there were just just Shiva.
- 34:31Questions. But it wasn't like hundreds,
- 34:33right it? Was, I don't think it was
- 34:34hundreds, but definitely we were impacted in significant way.
- 34:37And I would just, I would be remiss if I would not say that
- 34:43in the chaos and in the utter destruction of a madness, sheer
- 34:52madness of the day, it was Hatsala's finest hour.
- 34:58Absolutely the their our finest hour.
- 35:02Hundreds of members, selflessly, without fear or care for
- 35:08themself, jumped into action to save others.
- 35:15And it wasn't to save necessarily fellow Jews, it's
- 35:20true. It was to save their fellow man.
- 35:22Yep, on behalf of those of us that don't wear vests, thank you
- 35:26to all of you Hatsala members. I'm so curious.
- 35:28I've been thinking about this the entire time.
- 35:30How did anyone get stopped from going in?
- 35:33I'm curious. I had saw a guy that comes to
- 35:35911 comes to the buildings. Don't didn't they have didn't a
- 35:38lot of you have a feeling of wanting to even go further in?
- 35:41There's a famous story. I I recognize the danger.
- 35:47As I told you earlier, I didn't get too close to the building.
- 35:50I had no interest in getting too close to the building.
- 35:52I had plenty of work to do and what I was doing where I was.
- 35:55But there were others more senior than me and people who,
- 35:57you know, had their own reasoning for doing whatever
- 36:00they they went up to the building and they tried to get
- 36:02into the building. And there are stories, famous
- 36:05stories, famous stories of people who tried to get into the
- 36:10building and were stopped by the fire department and Police
- 36:14Department from getting into the building.
- 36:16They just said, no, we don't want you to go.
- 36:19We don't want you to go into the building.
- 36:20Don't go into the building. So they moved from this entrance
- 36:22to another entrance and they were stopped again.
- 36:26In retrospect, these were Malachan, literally Malachan
- 36:32sent to safeguard these Hatzalah members from going into the
- 36:37building. What would have become of them?
- 36:41The buildings collapsed, both of them.
- 36:44They literally tried to get in and they were denied access and
- 36:47could not get in. That's story one.
- 36:49Story 2 Hatzalah had set up a command post right next to the
- 36:53fire department, and then they were told to move to a different
- 36:57location. The location that they
- 36:59originally had set up. The command post was wiped out.
- 37:02The area that they were sent to, they survived.
- 37:06Yes, they had. They had the debris and
- 37:08everything else that fell down. But All in all, incredible
- 37:12miracles beyond belief, beyond understanding, without a doubt
- 37:19and stories, each story of heroism and courage and and
- 37:25creativity and just fine emergency response.
- 37:32I will say I wanted to go back to one more thing out of the
- 37:36outgrowth of that day for as long as I can remember, weeks
- 37:42and weeks and weeks, maybe months, every day was a funeral
- 37:47for firefighters and police officers.
- 37:51Every day the city was in mourning.
- 37:55The traffic was chaotic. You couldn't get into lower
- 37:57Manhattan. It, it turned New York City and
- 38:03the, and the entire country upside down.
- 38:06It was so impactful in a way hard to, to, to fathom to go
- 38:12back to that kind of chaos. So, you know, if they wanted to
- 38:17disrupt us, they certainly did. They most certainly did.
- 38:23And you talked about it for a moment.
- 38:26Similarly, October 7th, for this generation, which I'm a part of,
- 38:34I never thought in my life anything would come close
- 38:38anywhere near 911. But I can't possibly fathom that
- 38:45there isn't one person who's a thinking person, old or young,
- 38:50who doesn't recognize that for our time and our generation and
- 38:54the world that we currently live in, October 7th is right up
- 38:58there with days that will never be forgotten.
- 39:01Times in our life that will never be forgotten this very
- 39:05second. As you and I sit here to record
- 39:09this podcast whenever it's going to be replayed, we know what
- 39:13just transpired this morning in Qatar, in Qatar, OK.
- 39:18There's only one reason why they're doing that, because
- 39:20Israel has decided that it's game over and they're going
- 39:23after the hostages. We have not stopped.
- 39:26We will not stop. I did go Tere Chisro a few times
- 39:31last year and the year before I served together with a team of
- 39:34paramedics and the EMTs in Israel down South from the
- 39:38southern envelope. We LED a team of of Hatzolah
- 39:42responders from America. Barkhusham Hatzolah has
- 39:45partnered with Mug and David Adom and we went and six or
- 39:49seven teams. You have to remember the
- 39:52paramedics who operate a MUG and Dividend Dome are also
- 39:56reservists. And so when there's a national
- 39:59call up of this magnitude, someone has to man the
- 40:01ambulances. And so we have a partnership
- 40:04with MUG and Dividend Dome and I'm extremely proud.
- 40:06One of the proudest things I've ever done in my life was to go
- 40:10serve in archest role in, Stay wrote two weeks after the
- 40:16attack. October 20th, I was there.
- 40:19October the 25th, that's all. The members are special.
- 40:25Not me, but household members are special.
- 40:28Yeah, they get any recognition that's all from the city after
- 40:31September 11th. I don't know.
- 40:33I don't know. And I don't think that's all I
- 40:34was looking for, recognition, but it should be recorded in
- 40:37history of what was done and how it was done.
- 40:39They were there, they had a part of it, they were part of the
- 40:42recovery. That's your job.
- 40:43That's. How was your radio ever found?
- 40:47No. I'm actually, I'm actually
- 40:50curious like how did you, how did you get communicate with?
- 40:53Mozzilla, after you left, there was no communication.
- 40:55Zero. There was no communication.
- 40:56In fact, they did roll call later in the day, which I found
- 41:00out about, but I didn't know. And they were going, they were,
- 41:03they were doing going down the roster of all the members that
- 41:05responded, everybody. And they called my name out
- 41:07several times. They were looking for me.
- 41:10Must have been a scary. Moment I didn't know I wouldn't
- 41:12have a radio. I only found out later my wife
- 41:14and my mother knew. That were there any serious.
- 41:17A couple of stories from our from our side.
- 41:20We're extremely grateful that I'll tell the members no, not,
- 41:27not, not that day, no, whether or not some of the members got
- 41:32sick or didn't. Get smoke inhalation.
- 41:35I'm not a doctor. I'm not a statistician, but
- 41:38there's questions about, you know, it's.
- 41:40Definitely a real thing. You were there.
- 41:42You. Felt there, didn't.
- 41:42No question. I'm on, I'm on the registry.
- 41:44Yeah, I applied to the registry Barkershem.
- 41:47Just like to ask a little bit about you.
- 41:48Who are you when you grow up? I know you went to Camp Monk
- 41:51because the whole world knows you went to Camp Monk, but who
- 41:54are you? I'm a kid from Queens, OK, who?
- 42:00Barkershem had a phenomenal childhood, grew up in a great
- 42:03community. Kew Garden Hills in in the early
- 42:0770s mid 70s was a a wonderful place, melting pot, all kinds of
- 42:13Jews friendly, everyone knew everyone assuming that had a
- 42:18similar upbringing. The difference between Queens
- 42:21and Brooklyn, so to speak, at that time was Queens was
- 42:23obviously a little bit smaller, even the the different diverse
- 42:28communities of Queens till today we grew up, I went to Ichi of
- 42:31Terrace Moshe and Kew Garden Hills, Forest Hills, Kew
- 42:33Gardens, Regal Park, Hillcrest. That was the area you went to
- 42:37Terrace Moshe. So you had kids from literally
- 42:39every corner of the, from quote UN quote Queens communities.
- 42:45And so my grandparents lived one set in Kew Gardens, another set
- 42:49lived in Forest Hills and I lived in Kew Garden Hills.
- 42:53So we had three dominant neighborhoods covered.
- 42:57So today and 50 years later, you know, from my childhood, we're
- 43:02family. I, my, I've left Queens, my
- 43:04family's still there. My eye is still on Queens.
- 43:07I care deeply about the community.
- 43:08It's growing, it's changing. Today is a big aspartic Baharian
- 43:12neighborhood and community, but still a lot of hometown friends.
- 43:17You know, childhood is childhood.
- 43:18It builds a person in many cases for good and others for bad and
- 43:22you try to. But for me, Barkhosham it, it
- 43:25catapulted me into many different directions.
- 43:28I believe in relationships, I call upon them all the time.
- 43:32I love to see people, I love to talk to people.
- 43:34I enjoy having connections and being able to use them for the
- 43:39betterment of the community. And, and really from there I
- 43:42went to to Adelphia Shiva under the great Rabi Ruchim Shane and
- 43:47Abdavatrank Zaharin. Levraka's a cosotic, recalls
- 43:49Zaraka, my rebbe, who I never miss an opportunity to talk
- 43:52about. I met him in Cam monk and it's
- 43:55not a conversation about Abdavatrank, but his influence
- 43:58is all over me. He was a person who loved Jews.
- 44:02Every Jew, everyone, everywhere. Make no difference who you are,
- 44:05what you are from, not from Khasidi Schlitzer's fireship.
- 44:08Absolutely 0 difference To him, a Jew was a Jew.
- 44:12He believed in you, he loved you, and that was infectious.
- 44:16And that for us was extremely influential in our world view
- 44:21and how we deal, deal with and how we dealt with people.
- 44:25And so if you had a Rebbe who sat, who sits now in Eilim Haba
- 44:30in the Havas Ysro wing, those people, the Bardicheva Reba and
- 44:34the Ayev Ysrol, the Apterov and those Yiden who absolutely,
- 44:39unabashedly, unapologetically love Jews, that has influence.
- 44:45And all the Tamidim Revvedova training, wherever they are,
- 44:48thousands of them from Camp Hmong, from Adelphi Yeshiva,
- 44:51from Eresha Yeshua, those Tamidim are in Henoch, they're
- 44:55ask on him, they're balabatim, they're building communities,
- 44:57they're building families, they're good people, their
- 45:00hearts are in the right place. They're Bali Tadaka, they're
- 45:03Bali Hassan. Whether they have money or they
- 45:05don't, those are the people that will give their shirt off their
- 45:07back to you. Those are the people that will
- 45:09care about you. Those are the people who are
- 45:11making a difference and call yourself having a great Rebbie
- 45:15in your life and even having more than one, but even having
- 45:17one is impactful. And anybody who sits in this
- 45:21chair and is making a difference in Claudia as well.
- 45:23I can guarantee you that somebody in their life was an
- 45:28influence that pushed them in a certain direction.
- 45:31A parent, a rebbie, a friend, a mentor, a Big Brother, a big
- 45:35sister, whoever. Someone was a mentor to that
- 45:39person and pushed them to be great or that could be great.
- 45:44I've written about my Rebbe many times.
- 45:46He was the greatest flight instructor in history.
- 45:50He made us all believe that we could fly.
- 45:54Wow, I'm sure missing out on life by the way.
- 45:58I didn't have that. I know.
- 46:00Perhaps one of the better openings we've had.
- 46:03From any guest, first of all, just asking you to tell us a
- 46:06little bit about yourself. You gave me a nice little flavor
- 46:09about who you are and your passions, your energy just
- 46:12tremendous and already gave us a very important life lesson.
- 46:16Michael. Usually we save this like in the
- 46:17middle of the podcast we say, what's your message to the
- 46:19world? Well, there you have it.
- 46:21That was a really nice message. Do you know my brother-in-law,
- 46:24Rabbi Yoel Gold? Sure.
- 46:26So he's healthy boy. Yeah, exactly.
- 46:28Learned under of David Trank. Right.
- 46:29And I can guarantee you that Rabbi Yoel, your brother-in-law
- 46:33that I didn't know will sell, will tell you almost an
- 46:36identical description of what I of what I just said.
- 46:40I've heard this module in his own way.
- 46:43Yes, I've heard this speech before and he describes him in
- 46:46exactly the same fashion that. Our paths did not cross in
- 46:49yeshiva. I'm a little older than him, but
- 46:52it's irrelevant. Rebdova Trink was a Rebbe for
- 46:54over 50 years, and it's Tamidim who today are 80 years old and
- 46:5970 years old and 60 and 50 and 40 all feel the same.
- 47:05When you have someone in life who loves you with no
- 47:09conditions, it's rare. There's no errors about it,
- 47:13there's no agendas. I love you because you're my
- 47:16talented, care about you because you're my talented.
- 47:20Awesome. We live in a world today it's so
- 47:22cold, calculated and indifferent, apathetic, Who
- 47:26cares about anything? Me, me, me, all about me.
- 47:29And you meet a person who's completely selfless and all
- 47:33about you, you, you. It's something to hold on to as
- 47:37we navigate life. Amazing.
- 47:39Sounds like my kind of guy. I'd like to continue navigating
- 47:43your life, so take us through it.
- 47:44So what, what made you who you are today?
- 47:45What do you do today? What was that process like?
- 47:48I'm just, I've heard your name so many times.
- 47:51You know, growing up in Brooklyn, I got to be honest
- 47:52with you in the world of policies and families definitely
- 47:57heard your name a lot and I'm I'm it's an honor to have you
- 48:00sitting here, but I really want to know how you got started like
- 48:03and you know how anyone in your world of leadership and askanas
- 48:08and what happened like take us through that little bit for the
- 48:10of the of that process my. Father is a doctor, Doctor
- 48:13Bennett. Everyone knows him.
- 48:14He's in New Garden Hills. He's been a Doctor Barkhushan
- 48:16for a long time. He's a wonderful person.
- 48:18Is Ish has said in Ish Ms. is everyone says their father's a
- 48:22Sadiq, but father is a Sadiq, a well known person.
- 48:28My earliest recollection of my father in his role as doctor,
- 48:32although he had an office in our house, always did, was on
- 48:37Shabbos. People would come over to the
- 48:39house, they weren't feeling well or they needed guidance or
- 48:44something. I was enamoured by the idea that
- 48:50my father was a go to person for help.
- 48:54People in need went, came and come to my father for help.
- 49:00My uncle, my father's brother, Doctor Alan Bennett, Zahar and
- 49:03Lavrocha, same thing, always live near us.
- 49:08The Bennett family, but particularly the Bennett boys,
- 49:11Doctor, doctor and doctor, they became doctors for the real
- 49:15reason of becoming a doctor. They actually wanted to help
- 49:18people. They both became oncologists in
- 49:21the 1970s where cancer was ravaging, still is but Brooksham
- 49:27today. This treatments, those days, the
- 49:29treatments that we have today, we're not yet there.
- 49:33So they became hematologists, oncologists, blood specialists
- 49:37and oncologists. These were dealing with the most
- 49:39severe crises that were affecting everyone, most
- 49:44particularly Jews. And so they joined the medical
- 49:48field. I don't think medicine was going
- 49:51to be my calling. I couldn't probably get through
- 49:55medical school. I just didn't have this.
- 49:57It's flash today. We would maybe call it the other
- 50:00four letter words ADH, some, I don't know, whatever.
- 50:03I not self diagnosing. You have ADHD, you could.
- 50:07I have two brothers who are doctors.
- 50:12My siblings are are driven. We're all driven people and so
- 50:15for me personally, the idea of being the go to person and being
- 50:18someone who could help and make a difference to live life and
- 50:21just, you know, live your life wonderful.
- 50:24Raising a family is amazing. It's to task, it's a it's it's
- 50:28enough idea to raise a healthy family today in the world that
- 50:31we're living in with good well-rounded children in itself
- 50:35is an enormous accomplishment. And anyone who's watching this
- 50:37and anyone who's living their life and doing well and trying
- 50:40to just navigate making a living, raising your children,
- 50:44having a healthy show and bias and doing well in your life,
- 50:48call a cavode because a lot of people aren't and people are
- 50:52struggling. And so for that alone, that's
- 50:54enough. But for us that we have to make
- 50:59a difference. And, and we were raised, whether
- 51:03it was in the milk or but my parents raised us to care.
- 51:07We care. It was in your DNA.
- 51:09I guess because if you look at all my siblings, each one in
- 51:12their own way, I mean. What business did you go into I.
- 51:15Went into janitorial supply business.
- 51:17Nobody ever asks me what business I'm in.
- 51:19It's an amazing question my my brother-in-law who runs my
- 51:22company for me from merit to throw from efrat.
- 51:25My wifes brother would yell at me and say to me tell them what
- 51:28you do. I sell garbage bags and cleaning
- 51:30supplies to real estate management.
- 51:32Good luck to the real estate industry in New York is in
- 51:34completely, completely different conversation.
- 51:37Let's get into that. That's the conversation.
- 51:38I want to hear about these really the the moving of the
- 51:41neighborhoods. We're we're we're on the cusp of
- 51:43a major election in New York City and.
- 51:46Well, we, we, I think we get what's happening.
- 51:48Right, so So the real estate industry is in the crosshairs.
- 51:51What? What happens?
- 51:52What's that shift like? It's a major shift in, in, in
- 51:55both in, in demographics and both in the feeling of of, of,
- 52:00of fear, Shivas and, and and. Can you break it down for me, if
- 52:06you don't mind? Because I I hear a lot about
- 52:07this New York, there's a lot to fear of what might happen, but
- 52:11just. Look, I'm not a fear mongerer.
- 52:12I don't like to be a fear mongerer.
- 52:14I have a very active Twitter. Or they call X today X.
- 52:19I really try not to be a fear mongerer.
- 52:21I hate it. And usually it doesn't age well.
- 52:24You know, oh, this is going to happen.
- 52:25That's going to happen. And then three months or six
- 52:27months or a year from now doesn't happen.
- 52:29You look like a fool. I mean, you're not a Navi.
- 52:32So. But at the same time, reality is
- 52:35reality and you have to be realistic and honest.
- 52:38So there's a difference between being a fear mongerer and a
- 52:40truth Sayer. And today being a truth Sayer is
- 52:44not such a popular thing. People are afraid of the truth.
- 52:48So right now we're dealing with an election that's potentially,
- 52:51potentially, potentially has the potential to change New York
- 52:58City as we know it. This community that we currently
- 53:02enjoy, our lives in New York City that we currently enjoy to
- 53:08a great degree changed under the Rudy Giuliani administration.
- 53:12Before that administration, people will remember there was a
- 53:16feeling that the streets were not safe.
- 53:19At the end of the Dinkins administration.
- 53:20I was a very young boy, but I do remember you did had the Crown
- 53:24Heights riots. It was there was there was a lot
- 53:26of uneasiness. Again, I was very young, but at
- 53:32the beginning of the Giuliani administration, I got married
- 53:34very young. I was living in Flatbush and
- 53:39there was this 100% commitment to safety, security, quality of
- 53:45life. And if you know anything about
- 53:47the Giuliani administration, they introduce what they call
- 53:49broken windows policing, which basically is you deal with this,
- 53:54This was a Bill Bratton invention.
- 53:57He was the commissioner of the Police Department, first
- 53:59commissioner under Rudy Giuliani, and basically all
- 54:03quality of life issues are directly correlated to real
- 54:08crime. If you take care of the pan
- 54:11handlers, if you take care of the small petty theft, the the,
- 54:15the, the small burglaries, the the the bike stealing muggings.
- 54:21Not, not nothing, but nothing major.
- 54:24Those are called broken windows. Things that graffiti, those
- 54:30kinds of things, if you deal with the small things, they have
- 54:33a direct impact on the big things.
- 54:35And it was extremely successful. They drove down crime to record
- 54:39levels, levels that today we enjoy that Mayor Bloomberg after
- 54:43Giuliani also enjoyed and enhanced again, heavy, heavy,
- 54:49heavy focus on quality of life sort of moving out of that
- 54:54administration. The city's took a different
- 54:56turn, different policies above the Blasio administration.
- 54:59I'm not going to get into this particulars of all these
- 55:02different things, but the focus has sort of changed.
- 55:05I will say now as we're moving forward under Eric Adams has
- 55:09been again a recommitment to safety, but there's still, you
- 55:14know, people don't feel safe and there's a lot of anti-Semitism.
- 55:18The protests have a lot to do with it and just the overall
- 55:20atmosphere of wearing the Yamaka in the street today where this
- 55:23sort of quote UN quote, an open season feeling where we can
- 55:29potentially be in harm's way. That has an impact on people.
- 55:33That changes people's idea of if I'm not safe, nothing else
- 55:37matters. My children are not safe.
- 55:39Nothing really else matters. I could live in a beautiful
- 55:42home, in a beautiful community, but if I have to go to work and
- 55:45I have to take my life in my hands and I can't go on the
- 55:47subway and I can't go on the bus and I can't live my life and go
- 55:51out at night because I'm afraid. That fear, fear for your
- 55:56personal safety, transcends everything else.
- 56:00And so now you have an administration that potentially
- 56:03could come into play that saying all the wrong things.
- 56:08Yeah, they're backtracking now a little bit because it's
- 56:11unpopular because who in their right mind doesn't want safety
- 56:14for themselves and their family? But at the end of the day, I
- 56:18think the focus on this woke ideology that we've come to
- 56:23understand where things that are really not as important as
- 56:26personal safety. You know, we, we hear all these
- 56:29stories about people get mugged on the street and God forbid
- 56:33somebody stands up for themselves and pushes back or
- 56:35fights back, who becomes Public Enemy #1 the mugger or the guy
- 56:39who pushed back? We've seen the stories over and
- 56:41over and over again. Whereas the victim becomes the,
- 56:44the, the perpetrator. We see it in Israel and we see
- 56:48it on the streets of New York. The victim is someone who feels
- 56:52unsafe and is not willing to feel unsafe.
- 56:55So they push back. And so not to get too deep into
- 56:58the woods, but that's really what we're looking at right now.
- 57:01And it's it's certainly eye raising, eye-catching.
- 57:05And I think everyone should pay attention.
- 57:07And if I fall short in saying it, if there's anyone who lives
- 57:10in New York City that's not registered to vote, you are
- 57:13making a grave mistake, a grave, life altering mistake.
- 57:19There isn't a person over the age of 18, boy or girl, adult or
- 57:25teenager, older teenager, young adult, that is in New York City
- 57:32and will be for Election Day that doesn't vote.
- 57:36It is in every word that I could possibly say a tremendous
- 57:40irresponsibility, almost, dare I say, a dereliction of duty at
- 57:45this point in our lives in America.
- 57:49If I remember correctly, and by the way, I was with you
- 57:52throughout the entire sequence, and I'm a little younger than
- 57:56you, so I don't remember all of it.
- 57:58Like even in Giuliani's tenure, I don't remember as much.
- 58:00But I do remember that he introduced stop and Frisk,
- 58:03didn't he? I believe he did and he was very
- 58:06effective. And you're right, crime really
- 58:10went much. It was skyrocketing the years
- 58:13before and it was one of the worst cities to live in and they
- 58:16did a very nice job. I think the mugger incident that
- 58:19you talked about, the best example I can give us with
- 58:22Daniel Penny the train, that's what I was.
- 58:23Thinking. That's probably what you were
- 58:24thinking. That's probably what most people
- 58:26are thinking is that, you know, he stood up, he was a Good
- 58:29Samaritan and he, they, they dragged him through the mud for
- 58:33it. They dragged him through the
- 58:34mud. But this is very obvious to the
- 58:37three of us. And as we're both sitting here,
- 58:39I'm totally on board with everything you've said.
- 58:42And I think you said it very eloquently.
- 58:44And there's a lot of people listening that this is a no
- 58:46brainer. This is simple stuff.
- 58:47This is easy math. What is it that we see a lot of
- 58:50the younger people that are jumping on this bandwagon and
- 58:55they're OK with a lot of this talk about being soft on crime.
- 58:58And you see people that go to jail, they come out, they go
- 59:01back, they come out. And it's like we saw the writing
- 59:03on the wall. This person was in jail like
- 59:05four or five times. Why are they still roaming the
- 59:06streets? Like how many times are they
- 59:08going to have to do the same thing until we realize that
- 59:11they're unsafe to be on the streets?
- 59:13We got to get them off. We got to figure something out.
- 59:15But what is it that's appealing to this other side that people
- 59:19are? It's Catching Fire.
- 59:20You see a lot of the young people, a lot of the voters from
- 59:2318 till 20, 526, this is talking to them and they're liking this.
- 59:29What? What are we missing?
- 59:30What are we mean? How is it getting here?
- 59:32So excellent question and I don't I can't say that I have
- 59:37all the answers. I can say the following.
- 59:41First of all, a younger person is idealistic.
- 59:44They haven't really gone through the Hard Knocks of life is to
- 59:49looking at their future and to them someone who's who's
- 59:53speaking about issues that matter to them, equity,
- 59:58affordability, fairness to them that resonates.
- 1:00:03They don't see necessarily the bigger picture in terms of well,
- 1:00:09how you going to get all that? The details, if you notice the
- 1:00:13details aren't being discussed, it's.
- 1:00:16Fraud statements. We're going to make this more
- 1:00:19affordable. We're going to make that more
- 1:00:20affordable. Everybody's going to have be
- 1:00:23able to live in New York and everybody's going to be able to
- 1:00:25have a place to live. Eric Adams is a good guy.
- 1:00:29He's a good mayor. Every one of those issues means
- 1:00:32something to him. Bill de Blasio, whether or not I
- 1:00:35agree with his politics, was a decent person and certainly
- 1:00:40wanted affordability and certainly wanted safe streets,
- 1:00:44as did Mayor Bloomberg, as did Giuliani, as did David Dinkins
- 1:00:47and everyone behind them and everyone in front of them.
- 1:00:50But when you're speaking to young people and they're not
- 1:00:53pushing you on the facts, on the actual policies themselves,
- 1:00:59you're just talking in broad strokes and you're inspiring
- 1:01:04them and you're talking their language.
- 1:01:06He's a great communicator, Mamdani.
- 1:01:08He's an excellent communicator. I can vehemently disagree with
- 1:01:12almost everything he said, but you have to admit he's an
- 1:01:16articulate communicator. Like Obama?
- 1:01:19And, and when you're an articulate communicator,
- 1:01:22sometimes you can get away with fudging the facts, with ignoring
- 1:01:26them, sidestepping them. And so the young people who are
- 1:01:30listening to all of this, he's speaking their language.
- 1:01:33He's certainly testing all of these, you know, things.
- 1:01:36He's saying he has smart advisers and people who are out
- 1:01:40there who understand the world that we're living in.
- 1:01:43I'm going to tell you something that is obvious to anyone who's
- 1:01:46paying attention. The Israeli Palestinian issue
- 1:01:49that is currently dominating every day across the world.
- 1:01:54Israel is not winning the hearts and minds of the next
- 1:01:56generation. We know this, OK?
- 1:01:59We are exceedingly pro Israel in every possible way.
- 1:02:05We know who the victim is. We know who the perpetrators
- 1:02:07are. You don't have to be a rocket
- 1:02:09scientist to recognize that it's 700 plus days and you have
- 1:02:13hostages still sitting in in Gaza.
- 1:02:15OK, let's, let's, let's, let's get past the the obvious.
- 1:02:19But to the young folks, the young kids, they're not
- 1:02:23understanding the context of this fight.
- 1:02:27They see Israel bombing Gaza and they see Israel bombing Qatar,
- 1:02:32which is happening in real time. And they see Israel as the
- 1:02:36aggressor, the bully. And that's how the media is
- 1:02:40casting Israel. And so if TikTok and X and mass
- 1:02:45legacy media and everybody and all the influencers and the
- 1:02:49Tucker Carlson's on the right and the Roshanian anti Semites
- 1:02:52on the left, and maybe Tucker Carlson deserves that same title
- 1:02:57are all saying the same thing. Israel's the aggressor.
- 1:03:00So if your mom, Donnie, and you recognize and you believe this
- 1:03:03anyway, so it's not, you're not going out of your comfort zone.
- 1:03:06You're just speaking out and you're tapping in to what the
- 1:03:10mood is on the street anyway. Is it any surprise that you're
- 1:03:14doing well, that the polls are with you?
- 1:03:17So we right now, I don't even know what the majority is of New
- 1:03:20Yorkers. I have no idea because it's, it
- 1:03:23keeps changing. People move to Florida, people,
- 1:03:27people are moving to the suburbs.
- 1:03:29People are living in the five towns, people living in Muncie.
- 1:03:31People are moving to Toms River for a lot of reasons.
- 1:03:35The kids moved, the job moved, affordability, better lifestyle,
- 1:03:41quality of life, all the issues that matter to us.
- 1:03:44But in our community there are options.
- 1:03:46And so as people move out, both in the Jewish community and
- 1:03:51others, who's left, Who is now the plurality of voters in New
- 1:03:57York City? Seems to me that what we think
- 1:04:02is the plurality of conservative, moderate, normal
- 1:04:05people in New York City is not as moderate and conservative as
- 1:04:10you might believe. The same people that voted in
- 1:04:13Giuliani and Bloomberg are no longer in New York City.
- 1:04:17They've moved. Who's left behind?
- 1:04:19Middle class, immigrant families, good people, nice
- 1:04:24people, but they don't share our politics as far as they're
- 1:04:27concerned. Good schools, affordability,
- 1:04:31housing, major issues for them. And they're suffering and
- 1:04:34they're struggling and Mandani is talking to them.
- 1:04:39That's my take on the world. What do we do have we had a
- 1:04:43whole approach this vote? Well, I like you said, I don't
- 1:04:46think that we're the majority in there is voting the.
- 1:04:49Hypothetically, we vote it doesn't work.
- 1:04:50Then what? I'm not a Navi.
- 1:04:53Not a Navi, I'm just asking you and then what I.
- 1:04:55Think, I think people have to make decisions that are that are
- 1:04:58good for themselves and their families.
- 1:05:00I'm certainly not going to be the one to tell people to move
- 1:05:02out. That's not naive.
- 1:05:03That's not my place to do. Right.
- 1:05:05But I'm saying what? What else can you do if you're
- 1:05:06not moving? We have to strengthen our
- 1:05:08communities. We have to make sure that our
- 1:05:10elected representatives represent our views.
- 1:05:12Yeah, you have to vote. I want to I, I don't want to be
- 1:05:15self defeatist here in any which what way, but we currently have
- 1:05:19with all of what's going on right now, we have 6 religious,
- 1:05:24I think the number six in the New York State Assembly.
- 1:05:27Never before with all of the leftists and the woke ISM and
- 1:05:31the socialists and all the other garbage that we're, we're
- 1:05:35confronting. OK, communism and socialism.
- 1:05:38Right now in the New York State Assembly, we have a Hassidashi
- 1:05:41guy who represents Muncie, Aaron Wieder, Common Jaeger, Sam
- 1:05:46Heichenstein, Sam Berger, four guys right now.
- 1:05:50Plus you have David Weapon. He's 5.
- 1:05:51I'm I'm sure I'm missing somebody.
- 1:05:53We have Steph. He's going to be looking it up
- 1:05:55in a minute. At 5:00, I'm I'm I'm sure that
- 1:05:57there's a there's. A more than a handful.
- 1:05:59That's just Orthodox, Orthodox religious from representation
- 1:06:05and many other friends. Stacey Feffer Amato represents
- 1:06:09Far Rockaway. I mean, she's Jewish and she's
- 1:06:12very supportive of us and and several others who are very like
- 1:06:16minded. So you have 6 or 7 or 8, maybe
- 1:06:1810 even who are really strong supporters, which we've haven't
- 1:06:22had in the New York State Assembly and and maybe ever.
- 1:06:25So why is that? How is that you have Ari Brown
- 1:06:28on the other side and on the Republican side, but that's in
- 1:06:31the state Assembly. So you can question how
- 1:06:34effective a Republican is in the state Assembly with a super
- 1:06:37majority of Democrats. But be that as it may, Carl
- 1:06:40Hastie recognizes that there's a very strong block of religious
- 1:06:47Orthodox Jews who are representing their communities
- 1:06:50with great distinction, I might add, in the face of a lot of
- 1:06:54adversity. And they're doing well.
- 1:06:56And so how did we get those guys?
- 1:06:59How did we get these electeds to be in the state assembly?
- 1:07:02We voted. We voted them in, and other
- 1:07:05neighborhoods in other parts of New York City that have strong
- 1:07:09religious and moderate voices should make it their business to
- 1:07:13come out Election Day. I don't want to say we're going
- 1:07:15to lose this, the mayoral election, but the polls look
- 1:07:17pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty dismal right now.
- 1:07:21We're far out. That doesn't stop an iota of the
- 1:07:25importance answering your question.
- 1:07:28We're not going to give up City Council races, state Senate
- 1:07:31races, Assembly races, congressional races.
- 1:07:36And what's more important today than having representatives in
- 1:07:38Congress who are standing up and fighting for what we believe in?
- 1:07:42They're either fighting with us or they're fighting for us.
- 1:07:45It's one or the other. Either they're pro Israel or
- 1:07:48they're against you. Better make sure that your
- 1:07:50member of Congress knows how you feel because right now,
- 1:07:54specifically on the Democratic side, we need those moderate
- 1:07:57voices. The Richie Torres is the Josh
- 1:08:00got Heimers, the, the, the, the this Brad Schneider.
- 1:08:03There's a, there's a number. Richie Torres is very.
- 1:08:05Graceful grace, man. Support of Israel he.
- 1:08:07Has been, absolutely. He's been a staunch advocate,
- 1:08:10absolutely of the Jews and the religious Jews.
- 1:08:13And he's been great. And he is.
- 1:08:14He's, he's a really hardcore Democrat.
- 1:08:16He's a, he's a absolute. Trumper, you know.
- 1:08:19No question. About it, and that's OK.
- 1:08:21But he's moral, he has moral clarity, and he sees really
- 1:08:24right from. Richie to Richie Torres is the
- 1:08:26perfect example. You don't have to.
- 1:08:28I don't agree with Richie Torres on a lot of his politics.
- 1:08:31I just don't correct. But I'm able to look past my
- 1:08:34disagreements with Richie Torres and appreciate his incredible
- 1:08:39outspoken support and defense, not only of Israel, but of the
- 1:08:43Jewish people here in New York. And so, yeah, I know he's not
- 1:08:48going to vote for certain things that are important to me.
- 1:08:51He can't and he won't, and that's OK.
- 1:08:54We cannot allow ourselves to become so isolated in our
- 1:09:03politics that if someone doesn't agree with me 100% of the time,
- 1:09:08he's no good to me because we are going to find ourselves one
- 1:09:12day with no friends and no allies.
- 1:09:15OK, There's no question where the Jewish community stands and
- 1:09:19who they stand with. But we live in New York City, we
- 1:09:22live in New York State. So if you live in New York
- 1:09:25State, recognize it's a blue state, there is a super majority
- 1:09:30in the Assembly of Democrats. There's a super majority of
- 1:09:33Democrats in the state Senate, super majority of Democrats in
- 1:09:36the City Council. The mayor's a Democrat, the
- 1:09:38governor's a Democrat. Both senators are Democrats.
- 1:09:42There's one Republican in the New York City delegation right
- 1:09:46now. Out of 12 or 13 seats of
- 1:09:48congressional members that are sent to Congress, only one she
- 1:09:52represents Staten Island. Stefanik.
- 1:09:54Not Stefanik Sonics Upstate, no I forgot her name from.
- 1:09:57New York City. New York City, NY City
- 1:09:59delegation. We'll get back to her I forgot
- 1:10:01her name from. Her Stefan, we'll look it up.
- 1:10:02And you were right. There were six by the way,
- 1:10:04Orthodox Jews in terms of representative.
- 1:10:07You're very passionate about this and I, I, I'm.
- 1:10:10Passionate about it because I believe in it.
- 1:10:12I've experienced it. It's not financial for me.
- 1:10:17I, I, mark Hashem, I'm in a position in my life.
- 1:10:22I don't take any money from anyone for anything Hashem
- 1:10:27provides my parnosa in my business and I've never taken
- 1:10:30money from my esconus from anyone for anything.
- 1:10:33You know, when when I meet people that I haven't seen in a
- 1:10:36while at a wedding or at an event, I usually say them, so
- 1:10:39how was your week? That's how I open up in my
- 1:10:41question when I ask people, how was your week?
- 1:10:43Anybody say anything good? It's always an interesting
- 1:10:45answer, you know, but you know, then I, if I really want to get
- 1:10:49into it, what do you do during the day is, you know, how I
- 1:10:51politely ask somebody. So I'm curious, what would you
- 1:10:53answer if I asked you forget about how your week was.
- 1:10:56What are you? What is your daily life like?
- 1:10:58Are you advocating? Like what are you officially
- 1:11:00who, when, when does somebody call you?
- 1:11:02Like when does your phone? Ring no no no day or night in
- 1:11:05the work with. What is it A.
- 1:11:06First of all, I'm a Hatsala member.
- 1:11:07If you had a business card, what would it say on it?
- 1:11:09A firefighter, Chief firefighter.
- 1:11:11I put out firefighter fires. OK, OK.
- 1:11:14Right, we're problem solvers. Right.
- 1:11:16And you're on Hatsala, of course, that's still active big.
- 1:11:19Part of my life. Still active?
- 1:11:20Yeah. In Florida.
- 1:11:21Wow. OK.
- 1:11:22Yeah. You live in Florida?
- 1:11:25Part time. So you're one of those people
- 1:11:26that moved out and headed out to farms?
- 1:11:28Still in New York. So you have both residents?
- 1:11:30Here and I'm back and forth every week.
- 1:11:32After you find it, Nicole. Nicole Malliotakis.
- 1:11:35Malliotakis. That's the sole Republic.
- 1:11:37I'm sorry, Nicole, I apologize. I'm on a podcast.
- 1:11:40So what is it exactly that you do?
- 1:11:42I know you said you had. That's what I'm asking.
- 1:11:43I'm still. Curious like I, I.
- 1:11:46Who are you? Every?
- 1:11:48Who are you? You're not a politician, not in
- 1:11:50office, No. No.
- 1:11:51Are you a lobbyist? Like what?
- 1:11:52What? What exactly?
- 1:11:53I, I'm a lobbyist is someone who gets paid for lobbying.
- 1:11:55So I, I, I'm, I'm, I work on behalf of the Jewish people in
- 1:11:59government for with government, with, with other people.
- 1:12:04I try to, I try to, it's hard to, I don't have an activist.
- 1:12:08Yes, yes. How long ago did you lay down
- 1:12:11your financial hat, so to speak, in terms of working for money
- 1:12:14and say I'm going to just do this?
- 1:12:16I have an existing business we it runs every day.
- 1:12:19I keep my eye on it. I'm I'm involved in it.
- 1:12:23I bought, I bought Hersham have a very good support staff.
- 1:12:26Let my my brother-in-law and his wife you to live in a frat.
- 1:12:29So we sort of have a yeah, we have that, that back office
- 1:12:32situation. My wife is my partner.
- 1:12:34She helps me on on that end. And it's sort of like the the
- 1:12:39relationship, so to speak with with the Rabbi Kiva had with his
- 1:12:45wife. What's mine is yours, and what's
- 1:12:46yours, you know. I'm saying, but you're saying
- 1:12:50over a decade you're doing this type of work like.
- 1:12:52Probably more, not more at this point.
- 1:12:54Yeah. So I just I I I'm able to
- 1:12:56multitask. What is your favorite thing to
- 1:12:58do in all the work that you're doing?
- 1:13:00People ask me what's my favorite place to be in.
- 1:13:02OK, I say, wherever I am at that moment.
- 1:13:04OK, that's an answer to a question I didn't ask.
- 1:13:05What's your favorite thing to do in general, though, when it
- 1:13:07comes to health? Let me ask it differently.
- 1:13:11What is an area of expertise that you can say unequivent when
- 1:13:16someone calls you and you say I got this right as opposed to
- 1:13:19sending them to somebody else? Right.
- 1:13:21No, you missed it. You will.
- 1:13:23Your question was great up until the end because your last, no,
- 1:13:25your last line is the answer. I believe my greatest attribute
- 1:13:31is knowing who to call. Sure.
- 1:13:34OK, I'm a great dispatcher. Got it.
- 1:13:37That's it, I mean. The 411 for 911 I.
- 1:13:39I I for whatever weird or odd reason, I hear a problem, I
- 1:13:45think about it and I I believe that I I know or or know someone
- 1:13:50which who could help that person with the.
- 1:13:52I love that. I really love that answer.
- 1:13:54And because. My expertise is just self
- 1:13:56driven. Just say your cell phone number
- 1:13:57out loud if you don't, OK, You're like hesitating for like
- 1:14:01maybe I should. If anyone needs anything, they
- 1:14:03can call us. We'll call you.
- 1:14:04Now they know. Now we know somebody who knows
- 1:14:06somebody, right? Right.
- 1:14:08You're dealing with a lot of challenges, right?
- 1:14:10Can you give me some categories of challenges that people are
- 1:14:12calling you for? Religious people are under under
- 1:14:14tremendous pressure. Do you want financial pressure?
- 1:14:18All pressure, But specifically, I can't help the financial
- 1:14:21pressure per SE. Although the Aguda just had a
- 1:14:25very big win, which is not going to translate into real money
- 1:14:28this minute. But eventually, with the right
- 1:14:31Siata Deshmaya, the school choice win could potentially be
- 1:14:36a very big win for the Jewish people moving forward, not just
- 1:14:40the New York. But I hear you're right that you
- 1:14:41just say that Aguda did something.
- 1:14:42Of course. The country, yeah.
- 1:14:44So we're not going to get too deep into that.
- 1:14:46But yeah, Good has been working on this school choice bill for a
- 1:14:48long time. What is the school choice, Bill?
- 1:14:51Basically a federal bill that's going to allow money to go to
- 1:14:54scholarships to yeshivas. So private for the for the
- 1:14:58first, yes. To help those that can't afford
- 1:15:00to correct. Correct.
- 1:15:01Similar to what's happening in Florida, but on on a, on a grand
- 1:15:05scale and in a national scale. Again, there's a lot of caveats
- 1:15:09to it and they and they don't want to get.
- 1:15:11I wish them a lot of luck. So this, this was a very long,
- 1:15:14long labor of, of love and effort started many, many years
- 1:15:18ago. I myself was in Washington, I
- 1:15:21would say last year at least 5 or 6 times on this issue alone.
- 1:15:26I also, another issue of tremendous concern for me is
- 1:15:29discrimination. For me, it doesn't, I, I cannot
- 1:15:32allow a Jewish community that wants to grow, whether it's to
- 1:15:36build a shul, whether it's to build a yeshiva, whether it's to
- 1:15:39actually move to a neighborhood and be denied the American
- 1:15:43dream, I, I cannot, it does just not sit well with me and I will
- 1:15:47do everything I can in my power to bring it to the attention of
- 1:15:51those that it needs to be brought to.
- 1:15:53That's including the United States Department of Justice
- 1:15:56amongst others, which I've, I've been fortunate to make some good
- 1:15:59relationships now in this past administration.
- 1:16:02And this to me is an issue as Kaya swell grows, as the we grow
- 1:16:07and we spread out. So we are going to be facing and
- 1:16:10have been facing real discrimination.
- 1:16:13Now, what is discrimination in this setting?
- 1:16:15It's called land use discrimination.
- 1:16:17It's stopping the Jewish people from growing, from building,
- 1:16:21from going to places that they can go to.
- 1:16:24No other community, black, brown or otherwise, in this country
- 1:16:29would be subjected to the kind of discrimination, outward open
- 1:16:33discrimination that the Jewish people are subjected to.
- 1:16:36And so for me, that's something that I believe the laws on our
- 1:16:41side, federal law that our looper law, can you give?
- 1:16:44Me an example, I'm a little bit lost.
- 1:16:45Someone wants to open up a shul. Build a shul in Toms River, NJ
- 1:16:48in Jackson, NJ. And the town saying no.
- 1:16:50The town says no. God, you have to.
- 1:16:52You need 500 parking spots. You need 55 acres of land for.
- 1:16:57Experience in that world. That this, this is this is
- 1:17:00really the work that I go to that a grocery store does.
- 1:17:03This is the real in the trenches work that is being done
- 1:17:07privately, quietly, which takes quite a bit of time.
- 1:17:11And it's not one of these things that make makes headlines.
- 1:17:13It's not glamorous. It's not, you know, Press news
- 1:17:17release worthy, but for every community including Jackson, NJ
- 1:17:22and Toms River, NJ and and in Airmont and and and the
- 1:17:26Forestburg, New York, Bloomingburg, Blooming Grove.
- 1:17:31Do you have an opinion on the new square situation?
- 1:17:33I don't. OK You know about it though.
- 1:17:35I. I know of it.
- 1:17:36I don't. I don't.
- 1:17:37What's going on? A new square.
- 1:17:38The one mile. Has idea.
- 1:17:39I know about it. I know of it.
- 1:17:40It hasn't come to my plate. I think it's an internal Muncie
- 1:17:44New Square issue and it should be dealt with.
- 1:17:46Isn't every issue. Right, this is this is an
- 1:17:49internal issue. You say internal within our
- 1:17:51community, correct? That's what makes the
- 1:17:53difference. So it's not touching your.
- 1:17:55It's I don't have to go to the Department of Justice.
- 1:17:57Right, right. That's what I'm saying.
- 1:17:59And tell them that we're being discriminated against by people
- 1:18:01who hate Jews. Right, OK.
- 1:18:03And that's that's the thing that.
- 1:18:04I believe that that's, I mean wakes.
- 1:18:06You up. That gets you going.
- 1:18:07God wakes me up. I'm up.
- 1:18:10I just want to point out to be fair, OK, I'm I'm playing the
- 1:18:13devil's ad. Please do I know what you're
- 1:18:15going to say? Yeah.
- 1:18:15So you ready to know what I'm going?
- 1:18:16To I know what you're going to say is sometimes we have an
- 1:18:18obligation to be good citizens. I don't know if that's, if
- 1:18:23that's what I'm saying, OK. No, he's saying that we could.
- 1:18:25It looks bad sometimes we come into a community and.
- 1:18:27Suddenly, would you want to? That's what I gave.
- 1:18:29You there's potato. Chip bags everywhere.
- 1:18:31And then there's. Not just that.
- 1:18:32So it comes making big. Buildings and the reason why
- 1:18:35they need 500 parking lots because all of a sudden there's
- 1:18:37a bar mitzvah, there's a breast that the whole the whole street
- 1:18:40is lined with cars and the people that were living there
- 1:18:43for a long time have no idea what's falling.
- 1:18:45Also in one day they wake up and it became a commercial city.
- 1:18:49I have. I will repeat my line to you.
- 1:18:51Yeah, we have an obligation to be good citizens, but we don't
- 1:18:55always do that. You said you said that.
- 1:18:58No, he's replying, I think what you're trying to say.
- 1:19:00I understand the remedy and it's in a perfect world, you're
- 1:19:02right, but unfortunately, you know, we can't always control
- 1:19:06everything that goes on all over the place.
- 1:19:07We're Yamaka. You have a job to make a kiddush
- 1:19:10shasham. Simple.
- 1:19:12That's it. There you go.
- 1:19:13Yeah. That's very easily said.
- 1:19:15But. Doesn't always pan out there, of
- 1:19:17course. Doesn't always turn out there
- 1:19:18of. Course not, we're a big.
- 1:19:19Community but that's what I want to make it sound like we are
- 1:19:21indiscriminate when it comes to the land use the Jews.
- 1:19:24I I think that you know for a big so in America we actually
- 1:19:28have it pretty good. We had very good.
- 1:19:30I don't like this talk when I hear anybody, whether it's
- 1:19:33black, brown or Jewish or otherwise, that America is
- 1:19:35systemically racist and it's it's targeting against the you
- 1:19:39know, for the most part, we have it very good.
- 1:19:42We really do. And there are issues, of course,
- 1:19:44and there is racism and it's spotty and you can find it.
- 1:19:47And, and there's this prejudice that is anti, there's
- 1:19:50anti-Semitic things that are happening all over the place
- 1:19:53when. The town makes ordinances
- 1:19:55specifically designed to keep the Jews out.
- 1:19:58That doesn't work for me when laws are being made arbitrarily.
- 1:20:05That are targeting the Jewish community from growing, from
- 1:20:09building, from creating houses of worship within walking
- 1:20:13distance of the housing area. And you are making things
- 1:20:18onerous and difficult and you have to jump through hoops and
- 1:20:22other communities don't have to do that.
- 1:20:24You would never get away with saying black people are not
- 1:20:29welcome here. And those laws are saying
- 1:20:31straight out, blatantly Jews are not welcome here.
- 1:20:36That is illegal. Yeah, we could have an extreme
- 1:20:39is what we can have. It's not extreme.
- 1:20:41It's not extreme. I have a word for it.
- 1:20:43It's called government sponsored discrimination.
- 1:20:46When the government of a local Township or a town council
- 1:20:51creates a law that is onerous for the Jewish people.
- 1:20:56And that means that they there are 50 churches and 20 mosques.
- 1:21:02But if I want to build a shul in this city, I need things that no
- 1:21:07other structure in this town needs because they know if we
- 1:21:11don't have a shul, we can't function, we can't survive.
- 1:21:14They know this. To target a home that is
- 1:21:20currently being used as a shul, a garage, is violating the First
- 1:21:26Amendment of the United States Constitution.
- 1:21:29I know like in Muncie, in Pomona, in Brooklyn and
- 1:21:32Lakewood, we have a shortage of shuls.
- 1:21:34We have a shortage of schools. We have a shortage of pretty
- 1:21:36much anything. It looks like things are working
- 1:21:38out pretty well. I don't want to ring the alarm
- 1:21:41bell just yet. I want to pull the fire drill
- 1:21:43here. It sounds like you're trying to
- 1:21:45advocate for things that are rampant.
- 1:21:46Like these are real problems all over the place.
- 1:21:48Linden, NJ This is happening today.
- 1:21:51A huge community of primarily Hasidic Jews have moved into
- 1:21:56Linden, NJ. A lot of opportunity there and
- 1:21:59they can tell you first hand that they are going through
- 1:22:02hoops and having great difficulty with the leadership
- 1:22:05of the city and it's straight up discrimination.
- 1:22:10That they're not letting them. They're not letting.
- 1:22:12Them build their shul, they're bothering them with their codes,
- 1:22:16they're being difficult with them absolutely outwardly.
- 1:22:20Forestburg, New York, a firm developer bought the rights to
- 1:22:251300 homes that was approved by the town prior to the firm
- 1:22:31developer buying this development.
- 1:22:34When it was a secular development from a developer in
- 1:22:36Texas, everything was approved magically.
- 1:22:39When the religious developer bought it, guess what happened?
- 1:22:43All the permits were rescinded and they are now in a 33 or 4
- 1:22:48year battle with this local town to be able to build the things
- 1:22:53that they want to build with tremendous hurdles, with outward
- 1:22:57discrimination. I myself went to testify at a
- 1:23:01local hearing on behalf of the community in Forestburg, NY,
- 1:23:06which is in Sullivan County. You never heard of it, but just
- 1:23:10because you never heard of it, and I'm not saying you just
- 1:23:14because it doesn't affect the Jews in Brooklyn or doesn't
- 1:23:17affect the Jews in Muncie, but we're growing and housing is
- 1:23:22unaffordable as we, I guess a. Testament to your point, these
- 1:23:24are things that are not making headlines.
- 1:23:26You know why, Michael? Because we have bigger problems.
- 1:23:29We got real. Issues we may have bigger
- 1:23:31problem, but those. Even them, even them, if you
- 1:23:34look at our history as a people, look at 60-70 years ago, we were
- 1:23:38literally being slaughtered on the streets.
- 1:23:40We were being put into gas chambers.
- 1:23:42I don't want to make the comparison but I'm saying it
- 1:23:45sounds like I don't know. I just get the sense like maybe
- 1:23:48I'm a little dense for saying this and don't jump down my
- 1:23:50throat. It sounds like we have it pretty
- 1:23:53good as far as these things you talk about.
- 1:23:55I understand anti-Semitic stuff is coming out now and it's
- 1:23:57terrible. I went just what?
- 1:23:59Way is it trending? It's trending worse, it's
- 1:24:02trending down so. When, when do we?
- 1:24:03That's it. I'm not so concerned that they
- 1:24:05don't let U.S. Open the show.
- 1:24:06So first of all, I don't like the comparison to gas chambers
- 1:24:09and all that stuff. That's scary.
- 1:24:10I'm a my grandparents were Alloco survivors.
- 1:24:13Let's let's be let's be moderate in our and out in the way we
- 1:24:18describe what we're dealing with just.
- 1:24:20Sure. Again, but I'm just trying to
- 1:24:21make a point is that we have it really good today.
- 1:24:24We have an amazing question. There isn't a Jew that isn't
- 1:24:27comfortable today. Now it's getting pretty bad.
- 1:24:30I understand all the rhetoric that's going on out there.
- 1:24:32And this is in the last, you know, 10 years or so.
- 1:24:35And I'm just, I just don't think it is like the problems aren't
- 1:24:41so major. In fact, the reason why I just
- 1:24:43the reason why I'll disagree with you is because you don't
- 1:24:45spend that much time going to the city.
- 1:24:47You don't spend. That agree in the city, it's
- 1:24:49there. I get it.
- 1:24:49But Michael, I was just telling you yesterday I went to Totowa,
- 1:24:52NJ, I walked into a random Home Depot, a Staples.
- 1:24:56It was right next door at Home Depot.
- 1:24:58I was like thinking twice if I said where am I?
- 1:24:59I'm walking. And if you lived there, I was
- 1:25:01thinking. Twice I get it.
- 1:25:02I understand that you jogged my my memory now.
- 1:25:06About 3 weeks ago on a Wednesday afternoon I got a panicked phone
- 1:25:11call from a friend of mine who asked me if his son could call
- 1:25:16me. Just had an incident in the PATH
- 1:25:19station down by the World Trade Center area.
- 1:25:22I said sure. Calls me up and tells me that
- 1:25:27young boy, 2223 years old, working, going to work in
- 1:25:31Manhattan lives in New Jersey and takes the PATH takes the
- 1:25:35train from New Jersey to I think he'll maybe Teaneck maybe.
- 1:25:41And he had an incident wearing Yamaka in the station.
- 1:25:45He was on the train. He he feared for his life.
- 1:25:49Someone was was literally stalking and bullying him,
- 1:25:53challenging him in his face. A tall, tall, tall guy
- 1:25:57intimidating, bullying guy say pro Palestine say pro Palestine
- 1:26:03over the whatever the verbiage was, you know, you and he was
- 1:26:07terrified. And then the guy, he started to
- 1:26:08move away from the guy. The guy was chasing him.
- 1:26:11Luckily for him, he, he, he ran into a couple of cops and and
- 1:26:16they and they actually arrested the guy on this spot.
- 1:26:20He called me up. He was shaking 2220 shaking.
- 1:26:25Is this reasonable? No, it's normal.
- 1:26:27So does it rise to the level of Nazi Germany?
- 1:26:31No. But Hashem though.
- 1:26:35This is a problem. But I'm I agree, but I was what
- 1:26:37this. Is about what I was saying we in
- 1:26:39land use things that were oh you.
- 1:26:40Talking about land. Use Yeah, yeah, that's what I
- 1:26:44mean by we're comfortable, we have a good.
- 1:26:45I don't think there's a shortage of of schools, but.
- 1:26:47I just want to say, may Hashem give you and all that solemn
- 1:26:50members and all the. They deserve it, they deserve
- 1:26:53it, they deserve it. And safety for you and all your
- 1:26:57families. It's amazing the things that you
- 1:26:59guys do and like you said, it doesn't get the press but but we
- 1:27:04feel. The way it should be.
- 1:27:05Yeah, yeah. But we feel.
- 1:27:06The press where it counts a. 100% and very seldom do we stay
- 1:27:12quiet for so long when someone's talking I.
- 1:27:13Have one more. I have one more thing I do want
- 1:27:15to add. I'm sorry, I can go.
- 1:27:16For much longer, but we just unfortunately.
- 1:27:18I I do have one more thing that an everlasting impact of that
- 1:27:24day, which I think it would be worthy to say to you.
- 1:27:30So this was a earth shaking. It actually is a message.
- 1:27:33This is an earth shaking, life altering experience.
- 1:27:37You can see it's 24 years later. I'm emotional just saying it
- 1:27:40over. The detail is so vivid.
- 1:27:42I could I went to a sheer I remember in Le Chateau.
- 1:27:46You remember Le Chateau where was Ave.
- 1:27:49P in east of? Course, of course, of course.
- 1:27:52Huge. Huge a big public gathering in
- 1:27:57Flatbush post 911 for the entire community, as we want to do
- 1:28:03after these kinds of events. And Ramatasyo Solomon was there
- 1:28:09and he spoke. He was one of the guest speaker.
- 1:28:11Ramatasyo Solomon was Mashkeek base marriage Gavoa.
- 1:28:14He had just come to America. He was extremely brilliant,
- 1:28:20wonderful Tadek English. So his speech style and his
- 1:28:25verbiage and his accent was very easy to listen to.
- 1:28:29Like you feel like you're, you're, you're, you feel like
- 1:28:32you're an Oxford. You're, you're listening to
- 1:28:33royalty. You listen to royalty.
- 1:28:35And that's what mother sees Salman, the way he spoke and,
- 1:28:38and he was impacting and talking to us about, you know, the, the
- 1:28:42trepidation and how we feel of the moment.
- 1:28:46And he said something I'll never forget.
- 1:28:51And I took home with me. He said you feel like you want
- 1:28:55to make huge changes in your life because Rosh Hashanah time,
- 1:29:00Yom Kippur time, such an event cannot go unanswered.
- 1:29:06And if you're thinking Jew, not if you're thinking person.
- 1:29:08And he said you want to make big changes in your life but
- 1:29:15understand big changes don't last.
- 1:29:20Find something small to do, take it upon yourself and do it and
- 1:29:29it will be long lasting. And he gave 2 examples. 2
- 1:29:33examples I remember he gave first example was to bench
- 1:29:38inside of a sitter. That was his first example.
- 1:29:42Seemingly not a huge lift for such a big thing.
- 1:29:47I didn't do it. The second thing he suggested
- 1:29:52was about to say, oh, it's close to yoga.
- 1:29:54And Elena about to say oh said, don't you think it's time to
- 1:30:00believe in Hashem? Ani maman bamuna shalima, Every
- 1:30:07day after davening, take upon yourself to strengthen your
- 1:30:12imuna in the body. Shalalam start saying ani maman
- 1:30:17after davening every day. And I heard what he said and I
- 1:30:24took it upon myself. And the one and only Kabbalah
- 1:30:28that I took on 24 years ago, I still do every single day and
- 1:30:34every single day except Shabbos, every single day I say an Imamin
- 1:30:39and I think about Ramatasyao. I think about 911 and I think
- 1:30:43Hashem for saving me. Wow.
- 1:30:47Incredible. Wow.
- 1:30:50People go lifetimes, generations without experiencing something
- 1:30:55so traumatizing and you are a better person for it.
- 1:31:00At the end of it. You're not bitter, you're not
- 1:31:02angry, you're not resentful. You, you, you were there to help
- 1:31:06people. You ran into the fire.
- 1:31:08They always say, you know, there's two kinds of people,
- 1:31:10those that are running out of the fire and those that are
- 1:31:11running towards it and my. Wife My wife would really
- 1:31:14appreciate me if I would stop running it.
- 1:31:19That's also what protects you, so it's.
- 1:31:21She gave up. Amazing.
- 1:31:24You know, we always say we, we, we expect the message in our
- 1:31:28podcast. We have so many messages, this
- 1:31:30entire story, this everything that you said, everything that
- 1:31:33you stand for. First of all, congratulations on
- 1:31:35everything you've been doing till now.
- 1:31:37And we look forward to all the wonderful things that you will
- 1:31:39be doing regardless of politics and regardless of who's there.
- 1:31:42We all have how our work to. Politics is a means to an end.
- 1:31:46If you're in the politics for the sheer politics, you won't be
- 1:31:50successful. Now that's the message before we
- 1:31:53let you go. First of all, do you have any
- 1:31:54questions for us? We always like to.
- 1:31:56Enjoy the conversation, keep doing good stuff.
- 1:31:59There are a lot of great people out there doing great things.
- 1:32:02People you don't know about, find them.
- 1:32:03They're great people. Out well, that that leads us to
- 1:32:05our next question. If you were to pick a guest that
- 1:32:07would fill that seat to to be on the None of Your Business
- 1:32:10podcast, who would you recommend?
- 1:32:12A guy named Naftali Miller. Well, that was quick.
- 1:32:15OK, Who's Naftali Miller? Naftali Miller happens to work
- 1:32:18for the Agoda, but that's not why I would I would ask you to
- 1:32:20bring him here. I just spent Sunday in Florida
- 1:32:26working with Khasdelev and I, all my friends are all Tamidim
- 1:32:32Ravdevitrank, Aaron Rosenfeld and Sammy Miller and Naftali
- 1:32:35Miller. And even those who are not were
- 1:32:38not Tamidim Ravdevitrank, but would be Tamido Ravdevitrank,
- 1:32:43the son of gold Shlemi Bischewski, the Bischewski
- 1:32:46family. This Khasdelev thing is so
- 1:32:50phenomenally impressive and so amazing, and Aftali Miller is
- 1:32:54one of the progeners of it. He's one of the founders of it.
- 1:32:59Basically, they took the idea of thanking Arabim and our Moros to
- 1:33:05a new level, a level of Natsadaka, a level of
- 1:33:10Akarasatov. And there's a fine line between
- 1:33:13making someone a Nebuch and making someone a hero.
- 1:33:16And they have done it successfully.
- 1:33:19They are supporting and putting our Rabaim and our Moros, who
- 1:33:23are responsible for molding our generation and the next
- 1:33:27generation, the next Kosko Bennett and the next podcasters
- 1:33:33and the next Sadiqim and Askanim and special people.
- 1:33:36Who do you think is creating them and molding them?
- 1:33:39It's our Rabaim. They're the ones who own the
- 1:33:41minds of our children for good or for bad.
- 1:33:45So they should be heralded the good ones, they should be
- 1:33:48treasured the good ones. And and this has they leave is
- 1:33:53such an unbelievable thing, what they've done.
- 1:33:55They're in every major city now you got to see this.
- 1:33:59A bunch of yeshiva guys created the most sophisticated holiday
- 1:34:03distribution in the world. They do twice a year.
- 1:34:07The Muncie distribution, the first one we ever had, You can't
- 1:34:11say no to that, my friend. Know about this.
- 1:34:12Yossi Brockfeld calls me and you'll see guy when Yossi calls.
- 1:34:16That's a great guy. So.
- 1:34:18And he said, you know, we're doing a thing.
- 1:34:20And I didn't even have to ask him what it was.
- 1:34:22I was just saying give me the address.
- 1:34:23And what was your and what was your?
- 1:34:24And I was there. It blew me away.
- 1:34:26Like you just the efficiencies of a bunch of yeshiva.
- 1:34:29Guys, such a fresh new concept. It's beautiful.
- 1:34:32You're already. A few years old.
- 1:34:33Yeah, it's massive in Flatbush. I mean massive.
- 1:34:37They take over Floyd Bennett Field.
- 1:34:39I'm talking about 1000 plus. I don't know the numbers.
- 1:34:43I just did it in Florida. We just delivered 172 packages.
- 1:34:46We took over an entire park or rented a Park 7 tractor
- 1:34:49trailers. They have 250 tractor trailers
- 1:34:52in Floyd Benefield and they're doing it in Muncie and they're
- 1:34:55doing it in the Five Towns and they're doing it in Baltimore.
- 1:34:57Great concept, great idea. And the whole concept is thank
- 1:35:01you Revi, perfect. Thank you, Reb Hotzkill, we
- 1:35:05really appreciate it. Greatest pleasure.
- 1:35:07Thank you so much to Isaac Newman, the Gabi of All Gabi's
- 1:35:12for recommending you and bringing you on this program.
- 1:35:15And we appreciate your recommendation.
- 1:35:16Abram Naftali Miller, we're definitely going to reach out to
- 1:35:18him. Thank you again to all of our
- 1:35:19listeners, our subscribers, Prime Stars production team and
- 1:35:22Twillery. That's a Rep.
- 1:35:24That's a Rep.
