Latest / Fostering Faith / Let's Talk Attitude
Transcript
- 0:00Hello and welcome to Fostering Faith. Today the second episode will be about attitude.
- 0:07As we walk into this season together, we thought it was appropriate to talk about everything
- 0:12that should be talked about and everything that's not being talked about. And so we're
- 0:16going to talk about attitudes today, how this can make or break your day. How do you feel
- 0:22attitudes, your attitude affects your day, Gia?
- 0:27Um, I feel like it affects my day on how other people like, I feel like it can affect
- 0:34everyone else's day. Like, the attitude thing just doesn't revolve around me, it involves
- 0:40it on everyone.
- 0:43Do you think of your attitude before you walk into school each day? Is it something that's
- 0:49apparent to you? Do you feel that you are cognizantably aware of your attitude?
- 0:56I feel like, yeah, in school I am.
- 1:00You check your attitude?
- 1:01, I don't think I'll ever have an attitude in school.
- 1:06Okay. Then why, do we have an attitude at home?
- 1:10Yeah.
- 1:11Absolutely. And what do you, do you hold all your frustration in from school and bring
- 1:17your attitude home?
- 1:23Do you have an outlet?
- 1:24What's your?
- 1:25What's your outlets that you use for an attitude? Do you talk to your friends, do you journal,
- 1:30do you talk to God, do you pray?
- 1:32I'll just talk to God and sometimes my friends.
- 1:38When do you talk to him?
- 1:39When like I'm feeling down and everything and when I feel bad after I have an attitude
- 1:45and everything, I feel like that's the right time to.
- 1:49And as, as a parent, you know, walking with a teenage girl during, seasons of
- 1:56change and attitude, how a sweet little girl at the age of six can grow and we have hormone
- 2:03fluctuations.
- 2:04We have, you know, sleep issues and eating issues.
- 2:07Um, and I do feel like we're walking through this journey together as a healthcare provider
- 2:15versus a mom, you, you know, the reasons why these things are happening, but a 13 year
- 2:21old, 12 year old little girl don't care.
- 2:24So as we're trying to walk through this with a Christ like attitude and these emotions are
- 2:30raw and there's anger, there's, there's jealousy, there's bitterness.
- 2:34There's so many different emotions that can walk through our day, but how we're approaching
- 2:39them and having an environment of where there's open communication and looking towards Christ
- 2:48as a reflection of how our attitude should be.
- 2:52Do you feel like the environment that you're around, the people that surround you can either
- 2:57make or break your attitude?
- 2:59Yeah, because how they're acting can like, like reflect on you and everything can like
- 3:06change your whole like perception of everything.
- 3:09And so hanging out with people that have bad attitudes that can seep into you.
- 3:14Do you try to see the positive in people?
- 3:20Do you see the try this?
- 3:21Do people see the negative in people?
- 3:24What do you think stands out to people?
- 3:26I feel like, I feel like most of like the negative stuff because like if I don't want to hang
- 3:33out with a person, I feel like you would think of more of the negatives and if you want to
- 3:37hang out with the person, you would have to think of the negatives also.
- 3:40Like if I hang out with this person, I probably will get like this and they'll probably reflect
- 3:46this on me.
- 3:47So I'd feel like I'd look at all like the bad stuff of people, but I don't think you
- 3:52should do that.
- 3:55And whenever we have a bad attitude, whenever we come into our house, I mean, because we
- 4:01are such a small family, it is just me and Gia and her dad and we have, you know, the
- 4:06dogs that get go and and so it's just we don't have anybody a buffer to, you know, throw,
- 4:13you know, throw things off of.
- 4:14So whenever one person has an attitude, really reflects on the whole house.
- 4:19And so coming in from a day of work, you know, I try to have a good attitude and have that
- 4:24mercy and grace because we have that reflection of Christ and do I get mad?
- 4:31And we were talking before the podcast about anger and she said that she wishes that I
- 4:39would just speak whenever I was mad versus just leaving the room.
- 4:44Can you shine some light on that?
- 4:46What do you mean?
- 4:49Like you said before the podcast, like you just wish that I wouldn't get so mad and
- 4:53just storm off.
- 4:55Oh yeah, because like when someone like I don't know what you're thinking or anything.
- 5:02So like, is she mad?
- 5:03Is she sad?
- 5:04Like so me and dad get confused a lot like on where you're going to go or like where
- 5:11what just happened or anything because mean down don't use no context clues or nothing.
- 5:17So we get really confused and we don't know if like you're mad or anything.
- 5:20You just storm off and like we don't like see that like you just like just look mad
- 5:26and everything.
- 5:27And so I will use it to really like go outside.
- 5:29I will go for a walk.
- 5:30I'll go exercise.
- 5:32But my my inclination was do not say anything that is going to be hurtful, harmful and be
- 5:38said in that moment that I'm going to regret later.
- 5:42And so for me taming my tongue is a huge battle because I have very I had very loose lips
- 5:52and I did not choose my words wisely.
- 5:55And so I really try to reflect and say because I know that life and death are in the tongue.
- 6:02And so I really try to use my words wisely and not say things when I'm upset or angry
- 6:09because I know from past experiences, I can crush someone.
- 6:13I mean, I will lash you with my tongue and and and just be there could be such damage
- 6:20done and I'm not even really mean it.
- 6:23And that's why for me just walking leaving the room but taking what you said into context
- 6:29and from now on saying, you know what, I'm super upset at this moment.
- 6:33I'm walking away.
- 6:34And so I don't say something that I regret and we'll come back and we'll discuss that
- 6:38later.
- 6:39And I think that is a great communication point to to talk openly in the family and
- 6:46just say, you know what, okay, so how could we do this situation better if it happens
- 6:50next time?
- 6:52And as a parent coming into we don't, you know, we didn't do anything to cause the attitude,
- 6:59but yet the attitude is back on to us.
- 7:04I think that it's, you know, oftentimes seen as disrespectful, you know, I didn't do anything
- 7:10to you, but also to looking at it from a perspective of look at our attitude towards Christ.
- 7:18How do you feel as we are maturing in your walk with God that your attitudes and how
- 7:24you approach situations differently?
- 7:27I feel like I just think of what would God would do or like what would Jesus do and think
- 7:35if I'm like mad or something or if I'm about to say this, I would think would God do that,
- 7:40would Jesus do that or anything like that?
- 7:43Yeah, and I think that's a good, a good point to to try to reflect his characteristics.
- 7:49And once you mature and as you get older and speaking from an adult perspective, just
- 7:55being far from Christ and as we mature in our faith and walk with Christ, you can see
- 8:02just kind of the evolution of how we were broken, crushed, far from God, looking at people
- 8:10in our own eyes versus looking at him in his eyes and then knowing that he, he chose us,
- 8:16he loves us, he's adopted us.
- 8:20And for me to have a bad attitude because I'm now looking at people with Christ like
- 8:28lenses and because that is his son, that is his daughter, how could I disrespect a son
- 8:34or daughter of Christ?
- 8:36I mean just looking at them that the God of the heavens made them like he knitted to them
- 8:43together and has made them and has a purpose for them.
- 8:48And how could you not just look at that person and just love them for who they are, where
- 8:53they're at and know that because of grace and mercy that he's given to us how we have
- 9:00to give it to them.
- 9:02And that is what has saved you multiple times because of your attitude, because of your
- 9:08disobedience, because of the way that you have that you have spoke to us.
- 9:16And for me not to lash back at you, I think of his grace and mercy that he's given to
- 9:21me.
- 9:23Do you, do you try to reflect that?
- 9:26Yeah, I feel like that is like a great thing to try to reflect is trying to be more like
- 9:35God and everything.
- 9:39So I feel like that'd be a great thing to like reflect on.
- 9:41Do you have any advice for kids trying to communicate with their parents about if they're having
- 9:46a bad mood or an attitude or how they could talk to their parents openly and more like
- 9:53with confidence?
- 9:56Just think, have they been in your situation before or like anything like that?
- 10:02Or just like go up to them and say, hey, can I have a minute to talk or anything?
- 10:07Or like, can't like just talk like really respectfully and everything and like say, I
- 10:14need your advice on this or something like that.
- 10:17Or I'm just like what you said, just being very honest about, you know, my attitude is
- 10:21not good today.
- 10:22Like I'm having a really bad day.
- 10:23My attitude, you know, stinks.
- 10:26But also to kind of looking at what fuels your attitude, making sure that you're getting
- 10:29enough sleep, making sure that you have enough rest, making sure that your nutrition is on
- 10:35point because we all know that whenever someone gets hungry, they get very like cravy and
- 10:40complaining and so making sure that you have your nutrition, making sure that you have
- 10:44enough sleep and just looking at everything that's surrounding you, looking at your environment,
- 10:51looking at the friends that you're hanging out with, even just what are you putting in
- 10:54your gates, like your music that you're listening to and things of that nature.
- 10:58So I think that was the way that we could end this.
- 11:02And so just kind of look at your environment, look at how you're sleeping, look at your
- 11:04nutrition and just have that open communication with your parents and for parents, just always
- 11:09having that open door, even an open journal for you to communicate with your kids and
- 11:15making sure that we're giving them the grace and mercy as they grow and mature and as hormones
- 11:20go awry and just us being the reflection of what God has given us, so much grace and
- 11:27mercy.
- 11:29So thank you for turning in this week.
- 11:30Stay tuned for next week and have a great week.
