- 0:00right, busy day tomorrow in Auburn. Uh
- 0:03first day of spring football and um you
- 0:06know, Auburn baseball top five showdown
- 0:09um at 400 pm. So would encourage fans to
- 0:13uh to go check out baseball first um
- 0:17help get them a win and and then show up
- 0:19for another late one for the Tigers um
- 0:22tomorrow night at 9 in Neville. So
- 0:24without taking any questions
- 0:29>> Stephen it's become more common for high
- 0:31majors to when they don't make the turn
- 0:33NCA to just turn down the team with one.
- 0:35Why did you guys decide to keep on
- 0:37playing when you know so many teams
- 0:39position turning it down these days?
- 0:42>> Yeah. I mean I'm here to coach
- 0:44basketball. Um, the guys on my roster
- 0:47are here to play basketball. And, you
- 0:49know, we're all here to compete. And,
- 0:52you know, I'm not going to duck away
- 0:53from an opportunity to go out there and
- 0:55prepare and compete and play basketball
- 0:58cuz that's what we're here to do. Um,
- 0:59you know, I'm not going to take my ball
- 1:00and go home because we didn't make the
- 1:02tournament. So, I just see it as an
- 1:04unbelievable opportunity for our guys to
- 1:07uh to go out there and just compete on a
- 1:10on a stage. You know, um, most of our
- 1:12games will probably be on ESPN. um you
- 1:14know and um there'd be there's a lot of
- 1:17people in college basketball that would
- 1:19love to be able to do that. And
- 1:20obviously our our goal is to not not to
- 1:23play in the NIT. You know, our goal is
- 1:25playing in the NCAA tournament, advance
- 1:26the NCAA tournament. Um but that didn't
- 1:28happen this year. And um you know, we
- 1:32have an opportunity to to you know, go
- 1:34play um in a tournament that's
- 1:37nationally televised and uh you know,
- 1:39continue to play basketball for these
- 1:40next few weeks. So uh if we're able to
- 1:43advance. So, I'm I'm, you know, I'm of
- 1:46the I'm of the mindset of like, let's
- 1:47let's just go play. Let's go hoop. And,
- 1:49um, you know, have some fun with it. So,
- 1:51that's ultimately why I made the
- 1:53decision for us to uh to play in the
- 1:55NIT.
- 1:57>> Stephen, similar to first question, when
- 1:59when high majors do play, sometimes
- 2:00there are some opt outs. Are you guys
- 2:02going to be at full strength in the NIT?
- 2:03And I guess what was the what was the
- 2:05reaction from the team of of deciding to
- 2:07do this? Because in in Nashville, they
- 2:09talked about, hey, you know, don't want
- 2:10to go home, don't want to play their
- 2:11their final game. Were they pretty fired
- 2:13up to still have an opportunity to play
- 2:14more basketball?
- 2:15>> Um, you know, I don't know about opt
- 2:17outs yet because we, you know, we v
- 2:19visited last night after the selection
- 2:20show and obviously everyone was uh, you
- 2:23know, upset um, for not having made the
- 2:25tournament and um, you know, told him to
- 2:28sleep on it and uh, you know, I'll be
- 2:30with them here in the next 30 minutes.
- 2:31So, as of right now, no one's called me
- 2:33or anyone on my staff saying that
- 2:34they're not playing. Um, but if that
- 2:36changes, obviously, we'll let you guys
- 2:38know.
- 2:38>> JG.
- 2:40>> Yeah. How does this affect like just
- 2:42getting ready for the portal? How do you
- 2:43kind of nurge and do these two things?
- 2:45You be coaching a lot, portaling,
- 2:47getting ready for the portal. How do you
- 2:48do that?
- 2:48>> Well, the portal doesn't open until
- 2:49after the final four. If if the portal
- 2:52is open now, that might have affected my
- 2:54decision. But like right now, like, you
- 2:56know, besides us getting organized and
- 2:59getting a roster of, you know, guys that
- 3:01we'd like to go after if they do intend
- 3:04to go in and watching film, um there's
- 3:06not a whole lot we can do. we can do
- 3:08both of those things if we're playing
- 3:09home home games in Auburn in the NIT.
- 3:12So, um I just felt like, you know, you
- 3:14can do both and that's that's what we're
- 3:16going to do. So, we're we've we've been
- 3:18actively preparing for this portal cycle
- 3:20for a few weeks now. And, you know, we
- 3:22our staff's been really hard at work
- 3:24just getting things organized and, you
- 3:26know, identifying some of the positions
- 3:27that we'll need to fill for next year
- 3:28and looking at potential targets. Um,
- 3:31you know, that, you know, if they do go
- 3:33in, we'll be prepared cuz we've watched
- 3:34film and we've evaluated the things that
- 3:36they do. And, uh, you know, we've been
- 3:38obviously looking at the international
- 3:39market, uh, as far as players that are
- 3:41available from from over there that we
- 3:42can currently be, you know, recruiting.
- 3:45Um, so yeah, we just feel like right
- 3:47now, you know, we're able to do both, so
- 3:49that's what we're going to do.
- 3:52>> South plays a looks like a pretty funky
- 3:54kind of zone. You know, they nobody
- 3:56shoots more or gave it saw more threes
- 3:58than they did this season. Just talk
- 4:00about that matchup and just it's a very
- 4:02different kind of defense than what
- 4:03y'all have been seeing really the last
- 4:05few months.
- 4:06>> Yeah, it's got some Marramck tendencies
- 4:07to it and uh just with the activity and
- 4:10how much they fly around, they lead
- 4:11their conference in in turnovers. um
- 4:14turnovers force and they do a great job
- 4:16um of taking away some of the things
- 4:18that you know you want in as far as when
- 4:20you go against zone like when the ball
- 4:22goes to the high post they're all
- 4:23collapsing they want you to take threes
- 4:25um and you know that's uh you know we we
- 4:28got to find certain spots on the floor
- 4:30that we can attack and be aggressive but
- 4:31you know they're going to play the
- 4:32entire game in zone whether it's 2-3 or
- 4:34131 they're going to try and junk it up
- 4:36and keep you off balance as best they
- 4:38can and they do a really good job with
- 4:39it
- 4:41>> go ahead and to Andy.
- 4:44>> And then on the offensive end, their
- 4:46best, you know, they have the Sunb Belt
- 4:47player of the year, 66 point guard who
- 4:49doesn't shoot a lot, but I guess he
- 4:51scores a ton. Um, you know, just the
- 4:54challenges kind of matching him up and
- 4:55the guys they put around him. Seems like
- 4:57they got some catch you guys like.
- 4:59>> Yeah, he's big and physical and, you
- 5:01know, he plays bully ball. You know, he
- 5:02gets to the rim, does a great job of
- 5:04finishing through contact, he draws a
- 5:06ton of fouls, so he does a great job of
- 5:08getting to the free throw line. Um and
- 5:11um you know he's surrounded by by some
- 5:13really good shooters. You know, one of
- 5:15the best shooters in the country. He's
- 5:16made like 102 threes this year. So um
- 5:20you know they uh and they have two two
- 5:22other guys that can really shoot it out
- 5:24there. So I mean they they you know they
- 5:25they were playing for a share of the
- 5:28conference title in their last game at
- 5:29home and they ultimately weren't able to
- 5:31win that game. But Coach Riley's he's
- 5:33done a great job this year with this
- 5:34group and I know they're going to be
- 5:36really excited about this game. So, our
- 5:38guys are going to have to get up for it
- 5:39because, you know, we're going to have
- 5:40our hands full because they play an
- 5:41interesting style. Uh they have two, you
- 5:43know, high major players on their roster
- 5:46and um you know, our guys got to be, you
- 5:48know, ready because they're going to be
- 5:50coming in here with their hair on fire,
- 5:51you know, trying to knock us off.
- 5:53>> Coach, is this the same style defense
- 5:55that you saw from South seven years ago
- 5:57when you guys played down there? Were
- 6:00they playing that much zone at that
- 6:01point?
- 6:02>> Uh eight years ago in the COVID game,
- 6:04you know, they they were running that
- 6:05zone a good bit. Um I would I haven't
- 6:08had time to look back. I've I've watched
- 6:10three of their games from this year. I
- 6:11haven't been able to watch our two games
- 6:13from those years. Uh but I know my staff
- 6:16has. So um I'm there's definitely some
- 6:18similarities to to to from the clips I
- 6:20saw today uh of the zone that they were
- 6:22running, you know, when we played them
- 6:24um co year and then Isaac's first year.
- 6:29>> You mentioned how, you know, excited
- 6:30South Alabama would be for a game like
- 6:31this. How do you get this group to go,
- 6:33you know, quickly turn the page from the
- 6:34disappointment of not making the
- 6:36tournament Sunday to now, you know, two
- 6:37days later, you've got a, you know,
- 6:38chance to keep playing against a team
- 6:39that is going to come in fired up.
- 6:41>> Yeah, I mean, it's I'm going to I'm
- 6:44going to be prepared and I'm going to
- 6:45do, you know, the things I always do to
- 6:47try and get our guys motivated to play.
- 6:48And, you know, if it's it's it's it's
- 6:52it's on us as as coaches, but also as
- 6:55players, you know, to continue to have
- 6:57joy in playing basketball, you know. um
- 7:00it's another opportunity to go out there
- 7:02and compete and you know um that's
- 7:05that's got to be all you need to to get
- 7:08excited and you're playing at home you
- 7:09know so I mean not sure what else I need
- 7:11to say to him in order to get them going
- 7:13um you know it's a nationally televised
- 7:15game against a team that's in our state
- 7:18uh at home um in a national tournament
- 7:21you know um so you know just that should
- 7:24be all the motivation they need to go
- 7:26out there and play and compete
- 7:28>> how much does help that the you guys
- 7:30most of your guys on the roster could
- 7:32come back next season, but you only have
- 7:33two two seniors and how much this could
- 7:35be pretty beneficial when you talk about
- 7:37trying to look ahead to next year.
- 7:39>> Yeah, I mean, you know, part of the
- 7:40decision is trying to be around the guys
- 7:42that, you know, we'd love to keep in
- 7:43this program and have another couple
- 7:45weeks of practice with them and, you
- 7:46know, just try and finish this thing on
- 7:49a high note and um, you know, continue
- 7:51to try and make their own history
- 7:53because, you know, even though we're 17
- 7:55and 16, this team's done a lot of really
- 7:56good things this year and you know,
- 7:57let's try and add to it. So, um, yeah,
- 8:00that's that's part of it, too, is, you
- 8:01know, being around the guys that we want
- 8:02to come back next year for, you know,
- 8:04hopefully another week or two.
- 8:06>> Part of question here, are you going to
- 8:08continue wearing the jacket? Is that
- 8:09something you think will be a permanent
- 8:10addition?
- 8:12>> Uh, I don't know. It's a good question,
- 8:13J. Um, do you like it?
- 8:16>> My wife's a huge fan of it.
- 8:17>> Wife's a huge fan of it. Okay.
- 8:20>> She grew up with Denny Cron and he suit,
- 8:22you know, distinguished coach. I like
- 8:25it.
- 8:25>> Okay. Yeah. So I I was doing that, you
- 8:28know, back in like 2018 19 when we were,
- 8:31you know, still dressing up and one of
- 8:33the best compliments I got was from Roy
- 8:35Williams after we beat him in the Sweet
- 8:3616. Said, "Nice jacket, man." And he was
- 8:39he was like the the original like slacks
- 8:41with like the the pattern blazer guy.
- 8:43That was his thing. He was one of them
- 8:46um as far as you know recently. So yeah,
- 8:49I was doing it a while ago, but uh you
- 8:51know, it's uh we'll see. We'll see.
- 8:56Stephen, you've you've mentioned this
- 8:57defense won and it continues to evolve
- 8:59and get better over the course of the
- 9:00season. You had one of your best
- 9:01defensive games of the year, really good
- 9:02half against Tennessee. Anything you
- 9:04learned I don't know if you had too much
- 9:05time to go back on that film yet.
- 9:07Anything you've learned on defense that
- 9:08maybe you can take and use in this
- 9:10trying to make a run in the
- 9:12>> Yeah, I like the Mississippi State game
- 9:15like you know we we were really good and
- 9:17we we did some things that like we
- 9:18hadn't done all year which I you know
- 9:21kind of was surprised a little bit with
- 9:23how how well we we took to it. The first
- 9:24half of the Tennessee game was, you
- 9:26know, that was impressive. Like, you
- 9:28know, we we trapped every ball screen
- 9:30and just like made those bigs make plays
- 9:33and like we did a great job with it. In
- 9:34the second half, they made the
- 9:35adjustment and didn't run any ball
- 9:36screens. Um, but, you know, I thought
- 9:39our guys, you know, did a lot of really
- 9:40good things. So, yeah. Um, that may be
- 9:42something that this team is better at
- 9:44than, you know, what we're typically
- 9:45used to doing. But, you know, um, we'll
- 9:48we'll mix up our coverages and we'll
- 9:50we'll do a little bit of both. But, you
- 9:51know, I thought those were two of our
- 9:53better defensive efforts, you know, of
- 9:55the year in the SEC tournament.
