- 0:00Hour number two, Miller and Condon welcome back Iowa Sports
- 0:03Radio Network Scott Dockerman from the athletic bottom of the
- 0:06hour, Trent's plays of the day circus sports sponsor those
- 0:09about 10 minutes or so before 2:00.
- 0:12Let's talk some baseball, shall we?
- 0:14Matt Snyder joins us in this time slot Mondays or Tuesdays
- 0:18throughout the year throughout the baseball season.
- 0:20He's back with us today. Matt Trenton, Ken, good to speak
- 0:23with you as always. I I guess we have to start with
- 0:26the Cubs. I obviously they moved the
- 0:28needle here in our market. I know you're a Cubs fan.
- 0:31Trent and I both I'm I'm a fan. I'll be honest, I like watching
- 0:35them like the broadcast when boogs in it.
- 0:37I'm part of it. But anyways, they the the losing
- 0:41streak they can't hit the pitching staff is just totally
- 0:45decimated by injuries. Something has to give here.
- 0:49I'm not saying that Craig counsel is going to walk the
- 0:51plank, but you know, before long, do you know you got to
- 0:56turn to the manager's office at some point 'cause you're not
- 0:58going to fire the fire the players.
- 1:00By the way, Matt's appearance brought to us by unjust dot bet.
- 1:03Where are you on the Cubs as council's seat?
- 1:05Starting to get hot? And so I don't know how you
- 1:09could watch the entire team playing right now and think it's
- 1:12Council's fault. But not only that, you're four
- 1:14games over 500. They're only a half game out of
- 1:16playoff position. The sequencing is the.
- 1:20I mean, I'm trying not to be hyperbolic here.
- 1:23Or leave that to me. You know, clouded by clouded by
- 1:26recency bias, but this is the most ridiculous sequencing I've
- 1:29ever seen. Like to have 210 game-winning
- 1:33streaks and then a nine game losing streak and we're not even
- 1:36out of May yet. It's unbelievable.
- 1:39But team started 27 and 12. They bank a lot of wins.
- 1:43That means that they were able to give some of them back and
- 1:46still not be drastically harmed in terms of the pursuit for
- 1:50playoffs. But I mean, it is what, 3 1/2
- 1:53games out of first right now, even with how good the Brewers
- 1:55have been playing. So it feels awful.
- 1:59It feels like everything is terrible.
- 2:01But you know, as a fan, you, you always, you know what, you, you
- 2:06pine for drastic measures. We need to do this.
- 2:08We need to do this. But like, analytically speaking,
- 2:12logically speaking, what do you do?
- 2:15Probably just keep doing the same thing that you've been
- 2:17doing. And things are going to turn
- 2:18around. And they're not near as good as
- 2:21they were when they won 20 out of 23, but they're not near as
- 2:24bad as they've looked ever since then.
- 2:26So somewhere in the middle is probably where they'll settle.
- 2:29Don't think there's going to be a firing of Craig Council.
- 2:31I don't think you're going to even see a hitting coach move
- 2:33on. But first.
- 2:34Base coach is in trouble. The the question that I had
- 2:38though, and when Ken and I kind of batted this around back
- 2:40earlier in the show was Jed Hoyer and the front office.
- 2:44And when you look at the hitting free agents that they borrowed
- 2:48in Bregman's good right now, is it going to be sustainable?
- 2:51We will see. But overall, has that been, I
- 2:54guess, maybe the biggest culprit why this offense overall over
- 2:58this last half decade or so hasn't taken a huge step
- 3:01forward. It's just those veterans haven't
- 3:03hit at the rate a lot of people expected.
- 3:05Dansby Swanson, obviously. What are those prime examples?
- 3:09Well, I I kept saying it was before they they acquired Kyle
- 3:12Tucker that they had basically an entire cast of supporting
- 3:15cast types using the movie analogy, and they didn't have
- 3:18any main characters. When they went on, they got Kyle
- 3:21Tucker. He's a main character.
- 3:24I, I don't think anymore Alex Bregman is, he was at one point,
- 3:28but I don't think he is anymore. So that means we're back to they
- 3:32just have an entire cast of supporting cast types.
- 3:35And you could say that about the pitching staff as well.
- 3:37Maybe Kate Horton was going to be more than that, but he went
- 3:40down and he's out for the year. So you you're a mega market team
- 3:45and your entire identity right now is built around a bunch of
- 3:49pretty good players, but no superstars.
- 3:53That's no way to go about things, I don't think.
- 3:56I mean, if you go back to when the Cubs won the World Series,
- 3:59Kris Bryant won MVP, Anthony Rizzo was a superstar.
- 4:02No doubt Javier Baez at times could play like a superstar.
- 4:05And then you go to the rotation and you've got, you know, Kyle
- 4:08Hendricks led the league in the RA, Jon Lester was a young
- 4:11candidate. It's up and down the list.
- 4:14This team doesn't have guys who can win games by themselves.
- 4:18It's it's a group. And when the group is slumping
- 4:20like this, you're going to pile up the losses.
- 4:22So The funny thing is when Ken mentioned is Craig Counsel's
- 4:26seat getting hot, my thought went to if I were going to make
- 4:30any drastic changes like that and I were Tom Ricketts, the
- 4:33person I would fire would be Jet Hoyer.
- 4:36There's TC. Yeah, he spotted, spotted who is
- 4:38the superstar? Like, you're right.
- 4:40I mean, it's it's not going to be Bregman anymore.
- 4:43Just so it's past Swanson by Hap.
- 4:46Nice player. Gold Gloves.
- 4:47He's got a bunch of them. He's probably going to get
- 4:49another one in his career. PCA would be the guy, I would
- 4:53think, but I'm not so sure he can get there.
- 4:56Obviously. I mean, watching him throw the
- 4:58ball in the outfield, gunning that guy down to third base the
- 5:00other day was just remarkable. What he does, running and and
- 5:03catching balls is incredible. Made a couple errors lately
- 5:06though, but it's the batting I think it's probably going to
- 5:09preclude that. Has he got a chance to hit that
- 5:11mega star status at some point? The first half last year, if he
- 5:17hit like that all the time, he would be a top five MVP
- 5:20candidate perennially. But I think it's entirely
- 5:22possible that we saw the best half he's ever going to have in
- 5:25his career. Because remember heading into
- 5:28the year on this very show, we were talking about, hey, what's
- 5:31his upside? And I said up 1520 homers, maybe
- 5:34hit for low average, steal a lot of bases.
- 5:36And then he hit over 30. But I I did it was, it was so
- 5:40first half heavy. I think he was just out of his
- 5:42mind for 1/2. And we're not going to do that
- 5:44anymore. If there's anybody offensively
- 5:47who can be that guy, it might have to be, say, a Suzuki.
- 5:51But he's like everybody else, has been broken for two weeks.
- 5:55And how old is he? He's maybe Michael.
- 5:56Bush. Maybe Michael Bush too, but
- 5:59yeah. So we know the Brewers are the
- 6:01Brewers and they're just trot out guys that strike out
- 6:04everybody. And Mizoroski was tremendous
- 6:06again yesterday, 12 strikeouts. He looks like the guy that we
- 6:09saw right when he was brought in a year ago and the depth that
- 6:13they have. What about the Cardinals?
- 6:14We talked now it feels, it feels like for a month.
- 6:17Is this thing sustainable? Well, we've passed the first
- 6:20check mark of the year. Are the Cardinals going to be
- 6:22hanging around in your mind throughout the course of the
- 6:24season? They might be starting to hit
- 6:28that regression a little bit. They've lost five of seven and
- 6:31four of five. They were pretty well dominated
- 6:35by the Brewers yesterday. They've got two more against the
- 6:37Brewers. Then it's Cubs.
- 6:39We we might well have started to see that regression.
- 6:41But no, I just, I still don't really like that pitching staff.
- 6:45I think offensively they've had a lot of good signs this season
- 6:49and a lot of things that, you know, between Weatherholt and
- 6:53Jordan Walker, especially early in the year, Herrera, they've
- 6:57got some bats in there. And then they've got some guys
- 6:59like Mason Wynn who can play great defense.
- 7:01But I don't know if there's legs to this thing to last all year
- 7:06in the playoff race. I do think that if they do end
- 7:09up in last place in the Central, and by no means is that a
- 7:11foregone conclusion because the Cubs look awful right now.
- 7:14The Pirates and Reds have just kind of settled into mediocrity.
- 7:17But if they do end up in last place, they might be the best
- 7:20last place. Yeah, right now the the last
- 7:23place teams that are here's the underachievers.
- 7:26The Mets are in last place, the Tigers are in last place, the
- 7:29Red Sox are in last place. So let's go to the Tigers.
- 7:32If Scooble is that that surgery is is the miracle that we're led
- 7:36to believe that it is and he's going to be back.
- 7:40But if it. But if he is, and he does get
- 7:42back on the on the bump before the All Star break, and that
- 7:45looked unlikely when it first happened, Scooble is probably
- 7:48not going to end up as a Detroit Tiger by the time the trade
- 7:52deadline comes and goes. A.
- 7:53Do you believe that he would be shopped aggressively and who
- 7:58would be some of the pursuers? Absolutely, without question.
- 8:03If things stay the way they are right now, 10 games out of first
- 8:07place, they're in last place. They've lost something
- 8:09ridiculous like 16 out of 19 games.
- 8:12Just horrific. Where's the third wild card in
- 8:16the AL? OK, I think it's white size, 6
- 8:191/2 games out of wild card. They probably need to fold
- 8:22around double digits. And then I absolutely think that
- 8:25yes, there's they're not going to keep them in free agency.
- 8:27So they will let the bidding get going there.
- 8:33Unfortunately, I could see the Dodgers blowing everybody way
- 8:36just to make sure that nobody else can get them.
- 8:40The Braves. I wonder if the Braves don't
- 8:42have what's known as a very good farm system.
- 8:45But if you look at the Braves right now, and I know they've
- 8:48gotten great work from Bryce Elder and Martine Perez to this
- 8:51point, but if you look at their roster right now and you think
- 8:54this is a team that wants to win the World Series for a playoff
- 8:57rotation, Chris Sale and Spencer Strider could be a pair of aces.
- 9:00How about 1/3 ace? How about 1/3 ace in school that
- 9:03I feel like that would be a really good fit.
- 9:06That that would be a great landing spot for him.
- 9:08Is there another? Do you think there would be a
- 9:11National League team? I mean, if an American League
- 9:13team blows them away, they'd have to deal them.
- 9:15Who, who would that be? And don't say the Yankees.
- 9:20No, they're going to be good pitching wise.
- 9:22I mean, Rodon's back, cold back, Schlittler looks great.
- 9:28You know, I could see the Blue Jays as long as they hang around
- 9:30there, I could see the Jays going for it.
- 9:34You know, and and you've already once everybody's healthy there,
- 9:39but there's going to continue to be questions about Bieber.
- 9:42But man, Gossman, you Savage, if you get seized back and Bieber
- 9:47back, but I don't I I think that there's a good fit there.
- 9:50And then you, you look at the playoffs and again, like we said
- 9:53with the Braves, you have scuba at the top.
- 9:56And then Goss Gossman sees, yes, yes, Savage.
- 10:00Wow, my bad. That's a really, really stout
- 10:03top four. Of course they need to start
- 10:05playing better overall, but this is about the time it happened
- 10:07last year when things started to turn around.
- 10:09Hey, I just saw something yesterday.
- 10:11I think it was watching ESPN on the Bottom line.
- 10:14Wanda Franco, who look like a star in the making the extortion
- 10:19case against him. We might be talking still two,
- 10:223-4 years down the line, but is there any pathway for him to get
- 10:26back to to baseball in the state?
- 10:28Serving jail time, Trent. My, my hunch is no.
- 10:32OK. I think that this is, I mean, we
- 10:35were seeing an essential blackballing Trevor Bauer, and
- 10:40this feels like the optics are even worse than that.
- 10:43So my hunch is that he's done and he threw his life away.
- 10:48So yeah. Yeah, he had such a chance.
- 10:51He's only 25. It's.
- 10:53Unbelievable. A was going to break the bank
- 10:55and B was going to be, I mean the All Star year after this
- 10:58guy. This guy had the well he did.
- 11:00He got that huge deal from the Breeze, but then it got voided
- 11:02because of this. So yeah, I don't have any
- 11:06reporting on that. And and you know, time can heal
- 11:09wounds at times. And he's only 25 S even like 8
- 11:13years down the road. But my my hunch is that he's
- 11:16done. Yeah, I'm with you.
- 11:18The Padres seem to have turned a corner now.
- 11:21They lost four of six last week. Not saying that they're going to
- 11:24beat the Dodgers, but if there is a team that's going to push
- 11:27the Dodgers out West, doesn't it feel like it has to be the
- 11:30Padres? Yes.
- 11:32And I continue to say it's unbelievable how bad Machado,
- 11:38Merrill and Tatis have been and they're still winning games.
- 11:41I mean, you're talking about Fernando Tatis.
- 11:43Junior was zero home runs right now, 0, plugging 297.
- 11:47Jackson Merrill's hitting 198. Manny Machado's hitting 170.
- 11:52How are they winning any games? That's their court.
- 11:55Do you think the Tati's court case when he took the company
- 11:58that do you remember, you know the story, He was a 17 year old
- 12:01prospect at the time. He gave up X amount of his
- 12:04salary to this firm who was willing to front him millions of
- 12:08dollars, right? Yeah, right in.
- 12:10Case you get injured it. Was like an insurance.
- 12:11Policy. Exactly.
- 12:12And he took that company to court saying that, you know, he
- 12:15was young, he was naive, he didn't go know what he was
- 12:17getting into. Now we just lost that case
- 12:20heading into last weekend. Do you think that maybe he was
- 12:22on his? Because he's way better than
- 12:24this, right? Yeah, he is.
- 12:27I have no idea how if that would affect or not.
- 12:31Sometimes these things can snowball mentally anyway, if you
- 12:34start thinking about why am I not hitting any home runs, and
- 12:37that's a good recipe to not hit any home runs moving forward.
- 12:41It might be another one. It might be a thing where it
- 12:44just needs to snowball. Hey, if he gets one, then maybe
- 12:47he gets really, really hot. But I mean, it didn't work with
- 12:50Vladimir Guerrero junior. He hit in the order and then he
- 12:53hit one. It's like, OK, now the
- 12:54floodgates you're open. No, he hasn't hit one.
- 12:56Then The funny thing on Tatis is his exit velocities are right in
- 13:02line with past years, but he's not hitting anything in the air.
- 13:05He's hitting like all hard ground balls in line drives.
- 13:09Got it done. So again, that might be that
- 13:11might be a mental, a mental block.
- 13:14Dodger's question for you. I saw their scoreless inning
- 13:17streak of the bullpen came to a close and it felt like the last
- 13:20few years when we're trying to poke holes in the Dodgers, a lot
- 13:23of times it'd be that bullpen. You know, it's just so different
- 13:26in October. This bullpen looks like it's
- 13:29going to get even better. Jack Dreyer, Iowa guy, he's
- 13:31going to be coming back for him here pretty soon.
- 13:33He's been outstanding when he's been out there.
- 13:35When we get to October baseball, it's different than the regular
- 13:38season. How big is the gap between the
- 13:41Dodgers and everybody else in October?
- 13:43Yeah, Edwin Diaz will be back too.
- 13:45He had that loose bodies. Forgotten about?
- 13:48Him yeah. So they're definitely the best
- 13:52team when they're fully healthy and fully functional.
- 13:55I mean, we saw what the rotation could do last year and now it
- 13:57looks like the bullpen is going to be fixed offensively, they
- 14:00still have so much upside. You can get stuff like Andy
- 14:03Pahe's with a major breakout season leading the majors in RB
- 14:07is with eleven home runs right now and everything.
- 14:10But I I don't think it's significant enough that we're
- 14:15going to see like them run the table very easily without being
- 14:18challenged or anything like that.
- 14:21They took two or three in Milwaukee.
- 14:22But hey, the Brewers got a game and we saw the Blue Jays.
- 14:26Sorry, Ken, but you you know it. The Blue Jays probably should
- 14:29have won that World Series last year.
- 14:31So I could see it being similar. I could see them three peating,
- 14:35but I could see that somebody taking them the distance and end
- 14:38up getting that final out instead of giving up a game
- 14:40tying home run of the ninth this time.
- 14:41So they they are the best suited team to win it all.
- 14:46But things don't always go that way.
- 14:47I mean we saw them with 111 wins in the regular season a couple
- 14:50of years ago and they got beat in the NLDS.
- 14:52So they'll be the best team, but by no means do I take it to
- 14:56border conclusion that they're going to win.
- 14:58Yeah, I'm with you. I think Atlanta's going to push
- 14:59them, especially if they get scuba.
- 15:01I love, I love that that rumor, not rumor, that thought.
- 15:04If that happens, obviously the Brewers, I know they swept them
- 15:08last year. If the.
- 15:09Brewers are hot at the right. Time Brewers can give him a run.
- 15:13That would be who's the team on the outside of the playoffs?
- 15:16Maybe, maybe not like 1/2 a game out, but is there a team that
- 15:21you look to wake up? Do you think that don't sell
- 15:24this team short. This team's about to go on a
- 15:27run. Is there a team that's on the
- 15:28outside looking in right now? Yeah, there's a few.
- 15:32Both of the ALCS teams from last year.
- 15:34I still have the Mariners in the West.
- 15:35They're 26 and 29, but they're only a game and a half out of
- 15:37first. That division so bad.
- 15:40I can't believe that Cal Raleigh is going to continue to be this
- 15:44bad and when he starts to look like not last year self, we're
- 15:47never going to see that guy again.
- 15:48But when he starts to look like the 2024 version of Cal Raleigh,
- 15:52that's going to give the offensive boost.
- 15:53Josh Naylor still is better than he's been hitting with Julio and
- 15:57Ross arena. That's a really good lineup.
- 15:59They've got a good rotation. The Mariners are going to be the
- 16:02ALS champs again and the Jays like like I've been saying
- 16:08they're better than this. It's still a long season and
- 16:10they have the added bonus of being able to stay.
- 16:13This is exactly where we were last year in the clubhouse and
- 16:15mentally that can do wonders for you.
- 16:18It's easy to to say, to say, yeah, we've still got plenty of
- 16:22time we can turn it around, but sometimes that's just lip
- 16:24service. Well, the Jays know it.
- 16:25They were about at this point last year at this time and they
- 16:28ended up in game seven of the World World Series.
- 16:31And I think they got the second richest owner in baseball, the
- 16:34richest owner. Not that he's working on Steve.
- 16:36Going for the match, yeah. And by the way, since we're on
- 16:41that conversation on teams that can turn around, I am pretty
- 16:44ready to bury the mess. And I think this is just every
- 16:48time it looks like, oh, hey, they started to play well,
- 16:51they've got an easy stretch in front of them now.
- 16:52They go out and they start backing losses again.
- 16:54So I'm pretty much done with saying that there's any hope. 2
- 16:59dark horses in the American League that you didn't mention,
- 17:02the Rangers and the Orioles coming into the year.
- 17:04Now two years ago I bought into the O's and I was dead wrong.
- 17:07They were terrible last year. Rangers, Ken has bought me into
- 17:11these this team the last two years.
- 17:12They can't hit. Any hope for either Baltimore or
- 17:15Texas to turn it around and what is a wide open race in the
- 17:18American League to just make the playoffs?
- 17:20Heck, you went 81 games, that might be good enough.
- 17:22Any hope for the Rangers or the Orioles?
- 17:25Yeah. So on the Orioles, if you went
- 17:28back to the second-half of 2024, they were pretty bad.
- 17:32Last year, they were pretty bad at some point.
- 17:34That's just who you are. Even with the new players there,
- 17:37I think this is just they're not very good and it's as simple as
- 17:40that. So no, I'm out on the Orioles.
- 17:43And they're in the wrong division.
- 17:45Yeah, yeah, that doesn't help. I mean, especially because I
- 17:48expect the Blue Jays to be better.
- 17:49The Yankees are obviously not going anywhere, and even if the
- 17:51Rays are worse than their than the record does right now,
- 17:54they're still not going to be bad.
- 17:56So the Orioles are ticketed for 4th or 5th there.
- 17:59Rangers. Man, it's what an embarrassing
- 18:02stretch right now to go into Anheim and get swept by the
- 18:04Angels and then get a combined no hitter right from the Astros
- 18:07last night. I, I don't believe in this
- 18:11Rangers team. I liked the pitching staff at
- 18:13the start of the year and maybe they can still pitch, but as you
- 18:15said, they can't hit. I mean, even when Corey Seeger
- 18:17comes back, if he becomes the Corey Seeger from 2023, there's
- 18:22only so much that can do for them.
- 18:23They just do not have a good offensive ball ball club at all.
- 18:28Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com talks baseball with Trent tonight to
- 18:31kick off every single week in this segment.
- 18:34Back at you on Monday next week if your schedule allows.
- 18:37Matt Snyder, love the conversation.
- 18:38Thanks for what you do for us. Appreciate it.
- 18:40Have a good rest of your week, Matt.
- 18:42Thank you man. All right.
- 18:44Take care guys. Good to talk to you Matt Snyder
- 18:46on Juiced on Bet sponsors Matt's weekly segment as we talk MLB.
- 18:50And if you've been noticing here over the last few weeks, we have
- 18:54been heating up with those prop bets.
- 18:55You and Lucas? Lucas uses it too, right?
- 18:58Yes he does in his picks every single day at the end of their
- 19:01program. Also is there.
- 19:02So over the last week prop bets we are 1410 and 2.
- 19:07Stop betting games. Stop betting games.
- 19:10Do you enjoy betting props though?
- 19:11I'm more, I do more so than betting a game.
- 19:15Not as much, but it's been much more profitable.
- 19:18If you take you for making money, I mean, yeah, right.
- 19:20It moves way up. Over the last month since Unjust
- 19:22dot Bet has joined us up 6.24 units on prop bets.
- 19:28And it's just finding different things.
- 19:29So there's a bunch of different ways you can do it.
- 19:31If you're just a baseball person and you like like I do, I like
- 19:35betting strikeout totals. Well, what it spits out, you go
- 19:37over to the prop center, you click on K's and then it will
- 19:40tell you right now who are the quote UN quote best bets
- 19:43analytically for the day. You have an edge today and this
- 19:47will be one that'll be playing later on today.
- 19:49Cam Schlitter over 5 1/2 strikeouts.
- 19:51And where are the Yankees? They're taking on Casey down in
- 19:54Kansas City at Kauffman. Over 5 1/2.
- 19:57Your edge considered what the sports book is spitting out
- 20:00compared to what the actual numbers say.
- 20:02You have a 14.6% edge. They're not all going to hit.
- 20:07That's not the way that it works.
- 20:08But when you work through this Spencer Strider 6 1/2
- 20:11strikeouts, a 14.9% edge, it tells you each and every one of
- 20:15those individual ones. Maybe you're not into the
- 20:17strikeouts, you like to bet on hits or you want to take a flyer
- 20:20on home runs. All there on the prop center.
- 20:22Unjuice dot bet. It's got basketball, it's got
- 20:25baseball, it'll have football coming up this season.
- 20:27It is a great tool for you in the prop betting market.
- 20:31Plus you just want to make money arbitraging.
- 20:33They have that for you too. Unjuice dot bet.
- 20:36Yeah, I think more people are starting to get into that,
- 20:39especially we just make a little, but you keep making a
- 20:41little. That adds up.
- 20:42It's 125. Scott Dockerman next from The
- 20:45Athletic. We will recap what the Doc heard
- 20:48last week in California as he was part of the.
- 20:51Now I'm guessing Doc didn't stay there, right?
- 20:53He did not I did hear him say that no, he did not stay at the
- 20:56same resort that they well, the. Room rates for 790 bucks a
- 20:59night. That's the New York Times.
- 21:01They can pick it up, right? Yeah, 125 Miller and Condon back
- 21:05with Scott Duckerman. Trends, plays of the day still
- 21:07to come. Thank you to Matt Snyder.
- 21:09Unjust dot bet sponsors Matt Miller and Condon on Des Moines
- 21:13Sports Station 106.3 KXNO Hi Miller and Condon, welcome back
- 21:171:30 on a Tuesday Trends plays of the day still to come.
- 21:22Circus Sports sponsor those top of the hour off the bench with
- 21:26Sean and Lucas. Scott Docherman back from
- 21:28California writes for The Athletic, joins us to talk about
- 21:32the Big 10 meetings as they happened last week.
- 21:35Hello Scott, Trent and Ken, trust you had a nice Memorial
- 21:39Day weekend. Appreciate you coming on as we
- 21:41always do. Looking forward to this segment.
- 21:44Doc wanted to recap what you heard, what you, you know, you
- 21:47thought you heard. Perhaps what was maybe the
- 21:50biggest take away and I will get into more than one, but if you
- 21:53could put the one, the one that maybe moved your needle more
- 21:56than the others, what would that have been?
- 21:58Scott. It's the 2014 playoffs.
- 22:02I mean, that's that was really generated the most discussion
- 22:05among certainly the football coaches and the administrators
- 22:08and what it means. But then there's also all kinds
- 22:11of governance issues that make for boring talk radio, but are
- 22:14really important to the sport as a whole.
- 22:16But but I would say largely the 2014 playoff is what most people
- 22:20fixed on and and did so when Tony Petiti was talking for
- 22:25almost an hour. Something that we hadn't seen a
- 22:28lot from Tony Petiti, and I want to get to that momentarily, but
- 22:32with the 2014 topic we've talked here locally in the state of
- 22:36Iowa, this would be a huge win for the University of Iowa in
- 22:39the football program. They would have, over the last
- 22:41decade, made the College Football Playoffs 6 times if we
- 22:44had that structure. So that's good.
- 22:46It's a win for the middle tier of a lot of these major
- 22:49conferences. And now you have the backing of
- 22:51the ACC and the Big 12. How important is that?
- 22:54Because for a while it was the Big 10 on that island.
- 22:57And how was Tony Batiti able to get the ACC and the Big 12 on
- 23:01board with the idea of this 2014 playoff?
- 23:05I can only speculate with the other two leagues because they
- 23:07don't really have a voice other than, you know, they could say
- 23:10yay or nay, but they're not going to be the the fighting
- 23:14people in making that, which is unfortunate, but it's the way it
- 23:17goes. It's going to be the big 10 and
- 23:18SEC. But but how he got his own
- 23:22conference and all of the school unanimous is that it benefits
- 23:32more teams and and I mean more programs to have an ability to
- 23:37get to the playoff. That's more of a destination.
- 23:40Now. The bowl system is kind of
- 23:43archaic, if you will. The where 1520 years ago, you
- 23:48know, every game in in November was like, all right, and one
- 23:51more win and you get to this bowl and you get to this bowl.
- 23:54Nobody cares. Now it's just, I mean, you know,
- 23:56if you go to a bowl game, fine, but it's not the playoff.
- 23:59And, and so I, I calculated it that I think it, there would be
- 24:0461 different teams if there was over the 12 years of the CFP, if
- 24:09it was 16 team playoff, there would be 61.
- 24:13If there was a 2014 playoff, there'd be 80 different teams
- 24:16that have that would have qualified.
- 24:18So you look at and in the Big 10, that would have been 14 out
- 24:21of the 18 schools. The ones that would not have
- 24:25would have been Maryland, Rutgers, Nebraska and then and
- 24:27Purdue, which would have been on the border of the year.
- 24:30It won the Big 10 W title in 2022.
- 24:33So everybody would benefit out of that.
- 24:36And I think what the Big 12 and aces that, and they should
- 24:40especially the Big 12 is that when you go back through and see
- 24:45even what it would be like if there was a 16 team playoff,
- 24:49probably the cap are are two teams from the Big 12 currently
- 24:53getting in? Because even if you got a 10 and
- 24:55two Kansas State versus an 8 and 4 Auburn or 8 and 4 Michigan,
- 25:02there's going to be a lot of discussion over strength of
- 25:04schedule. Hey, we played a much tougher
- 25:06schedule, blah, blah, blah. But if you get to 2014, that
- 25:10number goes from maybe 2:00 to 6:00 or 7:00.
- 25:13And you know a team like Iowa State last year at 8:00 and
- 25:164:00, if a few things happened differently, maybe in the
- 25:20middle, you can make a really strong case that Iowa State
- 25:22belongs in the top 24. And then a lot of other schools
- 25:25have the same could have the same argument or discussion.
- 25:29So if you got that many more teams with that kind of access,
- 25:33I think it's easy to make that case rather than, you know, for
- 25:37team like Ohio State, which is probably the most tepid of the
- 25:40programs. You know, Ryan Day specifically
- 25:42said, I'm not so sure it's good for Ohio State, but it's good
- 25:45for the Big 10 and it's good for college football.
- 25:47So you know, that that's why the most of the teams are and most
- 25:52of the schools have rallied around that.
- 25:54And I assume that's a real strong reason why the ACC and
- 25:57and Big 12 as well, because it'll get, you know, get teams
- 26:00with probably at least nine wins really into that conversation.
- 26:05Rutgers, Marilyn. Purdue in Nebraska.
- 26:08That's the company, your Huskers.
- 26:10Weekend, the money have fallen. My God, unbelievable Doc, when
- 26:14you put it that way, I'm guessing that didn't go over
- 26:17very well in Lincoln etcetera, etcetera.
- 26:20Oh my gosh, fascinating. Scott Dockerman from the
- 26:23Athletic is joining us. Doc, you did also in in the
- 26:26piece kind of your recap from the weekend from your from your
- 26:29stay out in LA. You did put in Trenton.
- 26:32I kind of tossed this around. If the championship goes away,
- 26:36will there be any? You're not manipulating, but
- 26:39we'll be able to to flex games would be come up with matchups
- 26:43that would make sense. The PAC 12 is going to try it
- 26:45this year as you pointed out. I love the idea, but that is off
- 26:48the table when it comes to the Big 10.
- 26:50Doc. Yeah, that's one that that they
- 26:54kind of decided against. And I think part of it is what
- 26:58Ohio State, Michigan means to the Big 10.
- 27:01And that is it's such an important game and it generates
- 27:05the highest ratings of any regular season game and it has
- 27:09for the last five years. And it will continue to be in
- 27:11that category. So to remove it from the final
- 27:15weekend would probably would be a little bit, you know, it would
- 27:19work out for the Big 10 in that regard.
- 27:21And then the other thing that's really kind of interesting to me
- 27:24is about Ohio State, Michigan. The last time that they met in a
- 27:27winner take all division championship game for the Big 10
- 27:32was in 2007, because in 2011 they went to divisional play.
- 27:36They weren't in the same division for three years.
- 27:38Then for 10 years they were. And then the last couple, they
- 27:40haven't been, but they haven't reached at the same time.
- 27:44So you can make the case that Ohio State, Michigan will have
- 27:47more riding on it now than it has in the last two decades.
- 27:52And, you know, and it could be winner take all.
- 27:54It could be Ohio State's 8 and O Michigan six and two.
- 27:59And Michigan beats them to prevent them from being a, you
- 28:02know, sole champion or something like that.
- 28:04So there's a lot that in that game and rivalry weekend.
- 28:11I like the idea of a flex, you know, maybe even put it the
- 28:14second the last weekend would be kind of fun.
- 28:16But in this case, they're they're not interested in that.
- 28:21Disappointing to say the least. So we wrap up the Big 10.
- 28:24We got the Big 12 coming up. SEC is happening now is Greg
- 28:28Sanki need to get maybe his coaches in line.
- 28:32I saw another poll that was put out the coaches prefer going
- 28:36above 16 as opposed to what's happening in the office and and
- 28:39kind of in lockstep there. We know the SEC feels like
- 28:42they're holding very firm. They don't want to go to 24.
- 28:45How much does TV and the rights that ESPN has for the College
- 28:49Football Playoff, up to 16 teams in the playoff.
- 28:52How much does this play into that with the relationship with
- 28:55ESPN and the SEC? That's got something to do with
- 28:59it, no question about it. I mean the SECESPN owned SEC
- 29:03Network. It is when it acquired sole
- 29:05possession of SEC rights. It's the you know, it's not only
- 29:10the flagship. I mean it is really the ESPN and
- 29:13SEC seem to be in at least in this sport 1 the same.
- 29:17So the fact that if if it goes on 16 teams that it goes up
- 29:20forbid and it and ESPN/ABC isn't going to be the the sole rights
- 29:26holder or if they are, they're going to pay through their
- 29:28through the nose for them. You know it.
- 29:30It does say something because they're partners and they work
- 29:33together. But I'll, you know, I'll say
- 29:36this, that there is a lot more support for it in the SEC than
- 29:39what Greg Sankey has said. You know, I don't know how much
- 29:43of its public posturing, if it's we need to talk about this, if
- 29:47it's some sort of measurement that before he agrees that he
- 29:51needs to talk to Tony and get concessions from Tony PD about
- 29:55it for the easy 1. And I wrote about this too in my
- 30:01takeaways was the big 10 is the only conference now that doesn't
- 30:05have every team playing at least 10 power conference teams, which
- 30:07is so weird because a few years ago was flipped and they and
- 30:11according to AJ EADS, he used to play at Iowa, but he's the VP of
- 30:15football administration. There's no pressure to put on
- 30:18that at all. Now, again, I see that as more
- 30:22of a line publicly that if Greg think he goes, OK, we'll grade
- 30:25at 24. If everybody plays 10 done, it's
- 30:29going to happen. You know, So that and and and to
- 30:32top this off as well, there were were some questions of Tony
- 30:36Patini about, well, why don't you just go to 16 now and see
- 30:39what the assurances are with 24. And he's like, we're not
- 30:43thinking about 16. We're thinking about straight
- 30:4424. And, and the way I look at it
- 30:46is, and some people like, you know, he's so hard headed about
- 30:49this and I don't look at it that way.
- 30:50All I look at it is why would he negotiate from concessions
- 30:54already when he believes that this is the best one?
- 30:58And it may get there, but it it's not really what he wants to
- 31:02do. So why, why give a hint that
- 31:04he's willing to concede on something when that's not what
- 31:07he wants to concede on at all? So I kind of understand and
- 31:11everything's a negotiation and we'll know what, how it happens.
- 31:15But you know, if they went to 20 and say the first weekend there
- 31:19were four games of eight teams and call it a wild card round
- 31:22and then then they go to the playoff, that'd be kind of
- 31:25interesting too. But that hasn't been discussed.
- 31:27Doc So if we do get to that mandated 10 Power 4 opponents,
- 31:31that bodes well for Cyhawk, wouldn't you say?
- 31:35It yes and no. I mean, I was going to play 10
- 31:38probably no matter what. And yeah, I think that it
- 31:41probably means that it's going to continue.
- 31:44And I think it will continue as long as Kirk Ference is the
- 31:47coach. You know, as far as the future
- 31:50goes, it's hard to say, but, you know, but I, I don't know.
- 31:53But yeah, I mean, they're, they're under contract at least
- 31:56through 2027 if I'm a call. Kirk, you're right.
- 31:59Yep, you're right. If.
- 32:01There was also some murmurs about a 10 game conference
- 32:04schedule. Is that just in the infancy of
- 32:07that and more? We're going to have to see how
- 32:09this playoff plays out. Do you think that is something
- 32:11where he maybe be looking at at the next television contract for
- 32:14the Big 10? Yeah, I, I that didn't gain that
- 32:19got out there and it didn't gain really much traction.
- 32:21I didn't think. I was kind of surprised when I
- 32:23saw it became kind of an issue. But yeah, they discussed
- 32:28everything and but I also don't I, I just don't see that being a
- 32:33situation. Now.
- 32:33Maybe it's something to to leak to put pressure on the SEC
- 32:37because the Big 10, if they do that, they're I don't really
- 32:40give them much of an opportunity to go play outside the
- 32:42conference. Any of those games are just
- 32:44going to play against one another.
- 32:46And the SEC will have some good games with the ACC, but the
- 32:50marketable opponents aren't quite as strong in the other
- 32:53leagues. And so that that could be a, you
- 32:56know, just kind of a trial balloon to leak out there.
- 32:58But I don't see that as a realistic option at all.
- 33:01Just about every everybody's fine with with 9 at this point.
- 33:04Scott Dockerman joining us talk the last thing on this topic,
- 33:08the college football calendar. It seems like there's a movement
- 33:13now because the what the championship game is I think
- 33:15January 27th, right around there this year in Las Vegas and
- 33:18Legion. That is not a lot of folks
- 33:22starting to rethink. That's just too late in the
- 33:23year. Do you see that this, that this?
- 33:27Did these meetings move in the direction of a shorter calendar?
- 33:31Was that a big topic? Yeah, that was Ryan Day was that
- 33:37was his number one thing. That's what the football coaches
- 33:40have been talking about. And, and frankly, that's what
- 33:42Pettini was as well. And, and some of the other
- 33:45administrators, which is that they've had to adjust so many
- 33:49different times to so many different things, which are.
- 33:50It's all right. We're going to make League Zero
- 33:52part of the schedule and we're going to add and, you know,
- 33:55extra rounds of playoffs and we're going to do this.
- 33:57But it never really addresses the the calendar itself.
- 34:01And you're talking about such crazy overlap with the, the
- 34:04transfer portal and, and they're trying to get their rosters
- 34:07together for the following year. And they, you know what, they
- 34:09still go to school. So they're gonna have to try to
- 34:11get them in a class and, and all that sort of thing that they
- 34:14want the season to end earlier. And that is, you know, pretty
- 34:19much impressed upon everybody that in the future if there is
- 34:23going to be a 2014 playoff, that it's going to end in early
- 34:28January. And, and kind of the, the
- 34:30calendar that I don't know, I guess was discussed
- 34:33hypothetically was, you know, you end your season on
- 34:37Thanksgiving weekend, the first weekend in December's first
- 34:40round. Second weekend in December is
- 34:42the second round and both rounds are on campuses.
- 34:46So that would be, you know, 16 total on campus games in the
- 34:50first two rounds. Then it gets a little tricky
- 34:52because you got to go up against the NFL and in week 3.
- 34:55And they've shown no qualms about putting their best teams
- 34:59on that weekend head to head with college football because
- 35:02they can't, you know, they're the NFL and you're not, you
- 35:05know, they're they're your best look, your best looking buddy
- 35:08who goes to a bar with you in college.
- 35:10And no matter who you're talking to, he knows he can.
- 35:13He can hang out with that person.
- 35:15Well put. The Big 10 of the SEC, they are
- 35:18definitely those guys. And with it, Jamie Pollard
- 35:21created some headlines. I know that was a conversation
- 35:23piece for the Big 10 people that were out there with you in LA,
- 35:27but it goes back to what we look at with the College Sports
- 35:31Commission and this cap. That's not a cap, it's a joke.
- 35:33It's not real. We see not just SEC in Big 10
- 35:36schools, but Texas Tech and Miami and the people with the
- 35:39means that are going past it. What does the future look like?
- 35:43And with NIL and everything, what was your take away on that
- 35:46front? I know for a lot of people it
- 35:47makes your head hurt so try to help me out because it does mine
- 35:50sometimes too. Yeah, it makes my head hurt.
- 35:53So I can't imagine what it's like.
- 35:54People don't study this, but but they're trying to make it work.
- 35:59It it's it's legitimate. They're not trying to skirt it.
- 36:02And and when you talk about like the Nebraska situation, I mean,
- 36:04there is a clause to go to arbitration for the athletes.
- 36:07It's not so much for the the schools fighting it, it's it's
- 36:12really more about the athletes being able to ensure that they
- 36:14get their money and they and they work it.
- 36:16So so some of these battles are healthy.
- 36:19They're part of the system. That's it's not just supposed to
- 36:21be, you know, you know, gladiator or you know, who loves
- 36:25to thumb up or thumbs down on people.
- 36:27I mean, so that they don't see that as much of a problem.
- 36:31Now there's there's so many aspects to whether to try to get
- 36:37some sort of wage control underway.
- 36:39I mean, that of course, you know, who knows what kind of
- 36:42collusion that entail unless they get a something from
- 36:44Congress, which last week they were hoping that the Save Act
- 36:47gets it back on there and it didn't.
- 36:50It got pulled from the floor. So they kind of hoped at some
- 36:53point it does return return. So that that's a lot of lot of
- 36:58stuff kind of going on. And and I understand, I think
- 37:01Jamie's frustration was is obvious.
- 37:04And I think for some people that at the big 10, they they they
- 37:09weren't like mad. They were just kind of like,
- 37:11hey, we're all frustrated here. And you know, let's just kind
- 37:15of, you know, I don't understand why he wants to break away for
- 37:18but you know, and it probably wouldn't be who of Iowa State to
- 37:22be and let's break away category.
- 37:24So but you know, was it off the cuff and was it just a lash out
- 37:29frustration wise? You know, and we've seen that
- 37:32from Jamie before. Sure, I think that's probably
- 37:34the case. But you know, I don't know that
- 37:37that was the what the big 10 was was thinking because they were
- 37:40all sharing in his frustration. But like, that's really not the
- 37:43way to put it. Good stuff, Scott Document from
- 37:46the Athletic Doc. What will you be writing this
- 37:49week that we can look forward to?
- 37:51Well, I think we'll have some TV kick off time coming out in the
- 37:55next day or two. Cyhawk and yeah and huh?
- 37:59Cyhawk, one of them. I think so, yeah.
- 38:02Well, he'll definitely be one of them.
- 38:04So, you know, it might be a long day for people, I think.
- 38:08And then I, and I think that, you know, I'm also working on, I
- 38:13talked to a lot of basketball coaches while I was out there.
- 38:15So I'm kind of right about how basketball impacts, you know,
- 38:20how, how, what they're kind of on their mind.
- 38:22And among them was Ben McCollum. And he was kind of talking about
- 38:26how he's trying his best to get home games against other power
- 38:29institutions. And they're all saying no.
- 38:31And everybody's kind of going through that right now.
- 38:33So they're trying to line up some neutral site games.
- 38:36But it's, is that, is that really the healthy way to
- 38:38schedule? So I'm, I'm writing about that,
- 38:40as you know, sometime this week. Good stuff Scott Duckerman from
- 38:43the Athletic Dock. Thank you, as always
- 38:45appreciated. We will run you down next week
- 38:47if your schedule allows. Thank you, Scott Duckerman.
- 38:49Appreciate it. Thanks.
- 38:50Appreciate it guys. Good to talk to you.
- 38:52Interesting. So did you get that kind of
- 38:55feeling? I mentioned that last week.
- 38:56You did, yeah. That it's for sure going to
- 38:59happen. That's there's nothing for sure
- 39:01until the press release comes out.
- 39:03So what time are we kicking off 6?
- 39:0530 on NBC. 6:30 on NBC. That's my speculation.
- 39:09This is not reporting. No.
- 39:12We are not reporters, Scott. Dr. Man, he's a reporter, right?
- 39:14We're a couple of knuckleheads talking to the microphone.
- 39:16That is different circumstances. It is so, and by the sounds of
- 39:20things, we're going to know this in the next day or so listening.
- 39:22To tomorrow. Tomorrow.
- 39:23Yeah. All the how?
- 39:24Many weeks will we get. First 3 just like we normally
- 39:27do. Yeah, we get the non conference
- 39:28games. They usually have homecoming on
- 39:30there, so potentially get a start time for that one.
- 39:33Maybe also get the Black Friday game.
- 39:35I think I have this one locked as well.
- 39:36So the Black Friday game is hopefully going to kick off at
- 39:3811. Please tell me that's right.
- 39:40Yes, good. Because if you look through the
- 39:42slate, there's already a couple of games that are scheduled.
- 39:45You got Texas A&M, Texas, that's a night game.
- 39:49Egg Bowl is also 11:00 on ABC. There's only I think three games
- 39:55maybe that are not announced kick off time, including that.
- 39:58Well, CBS has had that game the last couple of years now.
- 40:02NBC, Remember had it two years ago.
- 40:05When it was at Kinnock. But it'll be one of those two,
- 40:07either, I believe 11:00 on CBS or 630 on NBC.
- 40:12Homecoming Purdue is in Iowa City in the middle of November.
- 40:17That's too late. It's Wisconsin.
- 40:19It's homecoming. It's going to be Wisconsin.
- 40:20Yes, on Halloween. On Halloween.
- 40:22Don't think you're going to get a night game for that one, but
- 40:25boy that would be fun. How many game?
- 40:27How many games? Obviously the Iowa State game,
- 40:29if you're right, and I believe you will be, and I'm talking
- 40:32about kidding, Rd. games is another story.
- 40:34Ohio State, where's that going to be?
- 40:35Is that big Noon kickoff? That's going to be Big Noon.
- 40:37That's I went through on my Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast for
- 40:40today. My guesses for all the games.
- 40:44Nebraska early Purdue, Doesn't matter.
- 40:47It'll be a Big 10. 11 BTN. Wisconsin So homecoming would be
- 40:51what time? Middle of the afternoon.
- 40:53I had that 111 on FS1. I had CBS for the Illinois Rd.
- 40:58game 2:30. What about at Washington on the
- 41:0310th of October? That's already been announced
- 41:05that Friday night. Oh, that's right.
- 41:06To move to Friday, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 41:08Yeah, and I think you're going to get the first Big 10 game,
- 41:11the road game in Ann Arbor. I think that's going to not be
- 41:15the Big Noon game because I think that's going to be the
- 41:16following week with Ohio State coming to town.
- 41:19Under the lights on NBCI. Think it's going to be 230
- 41:21because Big Noon that week, not a awesome slate of Big 10 games.
- 41:26Purdue hosts Notre Dame. Fox does not get Notre Dame very
- 41:31often. They want as bad as the game is
- 41:32going. To be Yes.
- 41:33Here's their opportunity. You want the game like that
- 41:35knowing that it's going to be a. Blowout.
- 41:36It's Notre Dame and it's going to be a really good Notre Dame
- 41:39team. No, that's what I mean.
- 41:40It's going to be a really bad Purdue team.
- 41:42But it's Notre Dame. Back to wrap it up, Tres plays
- 41:46of the day, our next Miller and Condon Iowa Sports Radio
- 41:48Network. Hi Miller and Condon, welcome
