- 0:18where we think differently daily.
- 0:19What is going on? I'm your host, Dan, from the

- 0:23Be back now. Christmas is all done.
- 0:25Everything's over and done with now.
- 0:27Oh gosh, that was crazy 2021. So moving past the fact that,
- 0:32you know, 2020 was crazy and 2021 shaping up to be quite an
- 0:36interesting challenge. I had an interesting experience
- 0:40and I wanted to share that experience with you guys due to
- 0:43the fact that, you know, it's it was caused directly because I'm
- 0:46on the autism spectrum and how does this impact me and all this
- 0:49kind of stuff. So if you are new to me and you
- 0:51haven't already downloaded my free Autism Life Hacks PDF book,
- 0:54you can do right now at autismhacks.net.
- 0:57Go ahead and dealt right now. Super dope.
- 0:59OK, so guys, autism and changing plans.
- 1:01Now let's let's just break it down really quickly.
- 1:04Autistic people do not cope well with changing routines, changing
- 1:07plans. Things change.
- 1:09Change is a scary thing for anybody, but especially people
- 1:11on the autism spectrum. Why, you may ask?
- 1:14Because people on the autism spectrum like to have things in
- 1:18a certain order, in a certain way.
- 1:20That they can routinely do those things over and over again.
- 1:23Because routine gives people stability and security and that
- 1:26comfortable feeling where they know that nothing crazy is going
- 1:29to happen because the world is chaotic.
- 1:32A person with an autism spectrum disorder sees the world as a
- 1:35chaotic kind of bright and brilliant mess sometimes, and
- 1:38that is overwhelming. Overloading.
- 1:40Cause meltdowns, shutdowns, overloads, burn, you name it.
- 1:45So when you have a set of things that you like to do repetitively
- 1:49in a routine, and you know what to expect, you know everything's
- 1:52going to be fine and you enjoy those things, then why wouldn't
- 1:55you feel comfortable around those things?
- 1:57It's a no brainer. But if those plans suddenly
- 2:01change, it changes the whole stratosphere of existence.
- 2:04It's kind of like having, you know, having dominoes all laid
- 2:08out perfectly. And then somebody, like, kicks
- 2:09them and they just start going off and like, Oh my goodness,
- 2:11you know, nothing's going to happen.
- 2:12Now you've changed it, you've clicked the domino, and
- 2:15something crazy catastrophic is going to happen.
- 2:18That is kind of like the experience of changing plans
- 2:21now. I wanted specifically to talk
- 2:24today about stores like I went to the store the other day.
- 2:27I was confronted with a problem which I have been faced with a
- 2:30couple of times before, but I've never experienced it in this
- 2:32certain store. The issues the issue I have is
- 2:35this. When I go to the store, I know
- 2:37where things are. I've been to the store a few
- 2:38times and because of the Coronavirus pandemic, I'm being
- 2:41the only person who was kind of like nominated to go outside of
- 2:45my house because my girlfriend was shielding and we had a
- 2:47little child. He's only two.
- 2:49So they were in the house and I was nominated to go to the store
- 2:51with the mask on and do that kind of thing because I was the
- 2:54healthiest kind of, you know, candidate to go out.
- 2:57So normally we go shopping together because when I do my
- 3:01grocery store shopping, we go as a family and Naomi helps me do
- 3:04the things that, you know, navigate around the store and
- 3:07not get too worked up. But going out my own has been
- 3:09quite a challenge and a difficult thing.
- 3:11So I'm going out to the store with a difficult kind of like,
- 3:14you know, straight from the get go, I'm like, OK, I'm going to
- 3:16go and do this. I get my trolley and I go into
- 3:18the store now for a while. It's been kind of interesting,
- 3:21right? I've been kind of getting to
- 3:24know where the things are in the store because I've been walking
- 3:26around the store, you know, first time took me a couple of
- 3:28hours and now it takes me about an hour.
- 3:30So I went to the store that I normally go to called little
- 3:32where I get a lot of fruit and veg from.
- 3:34So I go to little and they have a nice organic section.
- 3:36So it's kind of cool. So I go in there and as soon as
- 3:38I go in the front door, everything's changed.
- 3:40They've changed the, they changed the the layout of the
- 3:44sorry guys, they changed the layout of when you first go in,
- 3:48all the shelves were changed over, you know?
- 3:51Sorry guys, what happened? Then there was a that was a tick
- 3:53happening because I was nervous about talking about this, So
- 3:56please bear with me. And they changed all the, they
- 3:59changed all of the the shelves on the, the left hand side and
- 4:02the right hand side. And the shop was basically
- 4:04upside down. And I was like, oh, no, where do
- 4:06I go? Do I go, Do I go?
- 4:06And it took me a while to find my bearings.
- 4:08But what happened is when I went in there, I was like instantly
- 4:10shocked, like, oh, my goodness, you know, where's things?
- 4:12I started to kind of think, oh, OK, well.
- 4:14And then I tried to think logically about it.
- 4:16And as I went deeper into the store, it kind of just got to me
- 4:19and I started panicking and I started worrying and I wasn't
- 4:22really dealing with it very well.
- 4:23Well, and I missed out a bunch of things off my list.
- 4:25And if it wasn't for the fact that I knew somebody who was
- 4:30working on the tills, I think it would have ended pretty badly.
- 4:33Now what did happen is I started, you know, panicking
- 4:36really, really bad. Panicking.
- 4:37Started having anxiety then because I was thinking like, oh,
- 4:39my goodness, I can't find all these things where they've gone.
- 4:40They've changed the shop around everything.
- 4:41So we ruined. I can't do this.
- 4:44And then I and then my stomach started hurting.
- 4:47And I don't know if you guys have GI issues because of
- 4:49anxiety and stress and things like that.
- 4:51So my stomach was like just crippling.
- 4:52I was like, oh, you know, I could, I was just like, Oh my
- 4:55goodness, I'm going to die. And so then I had to buy some
- 4:58nuts and a bottle of water to then eat and drink because I
- 5:02needed to kind of calm myself down and calm my stomach down.
- 5:04That feeling left me feeling hungover for the rest of the
- 5:07day. I felt kind of like I was on a
- 5:10an emotional hangover because it was such a roller coaster, you
- 5:13know going to the shop expecting one thing and then the whole
- 5:16thing has changed and you've you've finished a different
- 5:18thing. And I was just like Oh my
- 5:19goodness, like what the heck has just happened, you know And that
- 5:24is is scary, you know, like it's it's scary because I was on my
- 5:28own and and I didn't I didn't know what to do and I was just
- 5:31lucky that my friend worked on the till really.
- 5:33But in terms of like autism and changing plans, it's so
- 5:37difficult to deal with, especially when stores change
- 5:39stuff around, you know, like I I have the biggest issue with
- 5:43that. And I wish they didn't change
- 5:44things around or I wish they would just like alert people who
- 5:47are on the spectrum, like, you know, maybe work with the
- 5:49National Autistic Society or somebody where they put an alert
- 5:51out saying, hey, your local store has changed its layout
- 5:54before you go there. So you can see the layout change
- 5:56something that would just help, you know?
- 5:58And it just really did throw me. And and I don't like that that
- 6:01wasn't, you know, it didn't take kindly to it.
- 6:03And I'm kind of like nervous now to go to that store in case they
- 6:05change it around again and hopefully they won't because
- 6:08they've never changed it. And then all of a sudden they
- 6:09changed it. You know, I would have even
- 6:11preferred a new store, like just build a new store because I
- 6:14didn't know. OK, well, it's a new store.
- 6:15I know that I'm going to expect not to have the same things that
- 6:17I've always thought about this store.
- 6:19So that was kind of like my, my biggest issue with that.
- 6:22But it is what it is. I'd love to know what your
- 6:24opinions are and do you get those issues?
- 6:26And I just, I just found it. Yeah.
- 6:28It's just, it just fascinates me that this people can just do
- 6:31that and then just think, oh, yeah, that's fine.
- 6:32Just going to change everything around.
- 6:34Everything will be fine. Also the parents, you know what
- 6:36I'm talking about autistic people.
- 6:38You feel my pain? Guys, I'm gonna go.
