Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:08media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:12through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:15the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:20Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:22OK, let's get into the stories for today.
- 0:25The first story that I have for you guys is creator Conscious
- 0:29Cast taking over Australian TikTok with her own Who the fuck
- 0:34did I marry type series. But now people have started to
- 0:38turn on her. So last week a creator who goes
- 0:42by Conscious Cast made a series detailing how she was in a year
- 0:46long relationship with a man that she met on a dating app
- 0:49named Marcus. At the time of posting her first
- 0:52video, Cass was like a week away from giving birth and apparently
- 0:56she actually has had the baby and she has since gone private.
- 1:00So while I did see the first video of hers that was posted,
- 1:04the rest of this information has been crowd sourced because her
- 1:07account is on private so keep that in mind.
- 1:09As Cass detailed in the series, she was conned by this man
- 1:13Marcus that she was in a relationship with.
- 1:15His name was Marcus Bennett, but that wasn't his real name and
- 1:19kind of her tagline for the series.
- 1:21This is how I fell for a man who wasn't even real.
- 1:24This is my. Story of how I fell for a man
- 1:26who wasn't even real. He lied about everything.
- 1:29His name, his age, his job, his family, his entire.
- 1:33She said they met on a dating app and he said he was a civil
- 1:36engineer in Dubai and he was just back in Australia while on
- 1:40break from work. They got into a relationship and
- 1:43she basically claimed that he lied to her about everything.
- 1:46Like he said he was a twin. He said that he had multiple
- 1:50family members that didn't exist.
- 1:51He lied about his career, his financial situation and also
- 1:55said he had no children. Eventually Cass got pregnant and
- 1:59they sadly lost the baby. Then she got pregnant again and
- 2:03when she started the series, like I said, she was basically a
- 2:06week away from giving birth. This is a direct snippet from
- 2:09the Daily Mail quote. He has done this before to other
- 2:12girls, she claimed. I am OK and in my newborn bubble
- 2:15with bub born last night. Miss Talaki, which is her last
- 2:19name, said she sold everything she owned in October last year
- 2:22in order to start a new life with the man she believed to be
- 2:25a successful civil engineer in Dubai.
- 2:27They had met on a dating site almost a year prior and planned
- 2:30a new life together after she fell pregnant in May.
- 2:32So Cass said that she found out, despite claiming he had no kids,
- 2:36that he had at least 7 seven kids.
- 2:40And apparently these children, or at least some of them are
- 2:44from similar situations to this. Like Cass said she has now
- 2:48spoken to several women that have had children with him where
- 2:51he was basically lying about his complete entire life.
- 2:56Similar to the situation that Cass got in.
- 2:58Apparently he's also a Barber, not a civil engineer.
- 3:02So people were really feeling forecast, especially because she
- 3:04was obviously duped by this man and heavily pregnant with his
- 3:07child. While she was releasing this
- 3:09series, however, people started getting suspicious of her
- 3:13because apparently, and I didn't see this myself so take it with
- 3:16a grain of salt, but she started telling people to subscribe to
- 3:19her page for the rest of the story.
- 3:22And then she was also asking people to donate to a GoFundMe
- 3:26because, you know, she was about to have a baby and she was
- 3:28obviously conned and out of money.
- 3:30And I think when it comes to these elements of it, I'm kind
- 3:34of like whatever, like she got some virality and she's trying
- 3:37to make a few bucks off of it. She obviously is like a single
- 3:41mom now because this man is obviously no longer in her life.
- 3:44And we don't even have the creator fund in Australia.
- 3:47So you know, she can't even make money off of the virality of
- 3:50these videos. And I do understand it's
- 3:52different asking people for their money versus like TikTok
- 3:55paying you for views like this multi billion dollar company
- 3:59paying you. I totally get that it's
- 4:00different, but still, I think it is like, you know, our
- 4:03prerogative to donate or not. But then I also understand it's
- 4:06like, well, she pulled out our heartstrings and now a lot of
- 4:08people are feeling like she was conning them.
- 4:11So the reason why people feel like maybe she was conning us
- 4:14now is because plot twist, people assumed that because
- 4:19apparently Cass has a lot of family in New Zealand.
- 4:21And I also think that's where she's from based on her accent.
- 4:24But the Daily Mail called her like Gold Coast influencer.
- 4:27She probably just lives on the Gold Coast, which is in
- 4:29Australia. For anyone that is, you know,
- 4:30not from this region, I assume she just lives on the Gold Coast
- 4:33and has been living on the Gold Coast.
- 4:35But I think she is like initially from New Zealand.
- 4:38So, you know, people assumed when she left Dubai she'd go to
- 4:40New Zealand because she has like all of her family there.
- 4:43However, during a TikTok live this week off the back of this
- 4:46kind of viral fame, it was revealed that after leaving
- 4:50Dubai, Cass came back to Australia and has been living
- 4:53with an influencer called Jay Muk.
- 4:55Jay Muk was known to be in a relationship with another
- 4:58influencer, Maddie Hale, who was also pregnant.
- 5:02So everyone was like, OK, what happened here?
- 5:05A lot of people assumed that maybe something really shady
- 5:08went on between like Cass and Jay Muck and Maddie Hale.
- 5:12So then they clarified that Cass and Jay Muck.
- 5:15OK, so Cass is like the original one who was duped and this
- 5:18influencer that she's now living with have a son together
- 5:21already. And she came back to Australia
- 5:23with nowhere to live because she didn't want to keep her son away
- 5:26from Jay Muck by moving back to New Zealand where she has
- 5:29family. So basically saying like, I had
- 5:32no choice but to move in with him because I was essentially
- 5:34homeless and needed to be in Australia for our son.
- 5:37But then this LED users to be like, well, you were about to
- 5:41move to Dubai with his son. Like what?
- 5:44So all of this made people question if Cass had been having
- 5:49maybe like some type of affair with AJ Muck behind Maddie's
- 5:53back and if that's why J Muck and Maddie split.
- 5:56However, Jay Muck has now clarified in his own video that
- 5:59he and Maddie split before Cass moved in.
- 6:02Obviously a lot of people see a lot of things circulating this
- 6:05and that. The last thing I want to do is
- 6:09encourage anyone to talk shit about the mother of my children
- 6:14or anyone in my family or my son's mom, anything like that.
- 6:19And one thing I just want to clarify, I put up that status
- 6:23this morning just to clarify that EJ's mom has moved in with
- 6:28me, but that was after me and Maddie split.
- 6:31But this has just made people very suss on Cass, which I think
- 6:34is why she went private. And Cass is.
- 6:36GoFundMe apparently has started refunding people as well.
- 6:40Again, I cannot confirm this, however she did just have a baby
- 6:44and I do imagine like all of the attention and now all of like
- 6:48the drama and the backlash around it.
- 6:50She probably also went on private because she is trying to
- 6:53protect her peace. The final part of this, however,
- 6:56again, this is a direct snippet from the Daily Mail quote.
- 6:59As she went into labor, Bennett allegedly used another one of
- 7:02his aliases and pretended to be a friend in Dubai.
- 7:05He claimed the Queensland Police were involved in the saga.
- 7:08Hello, I urgently need your help.
- 7:10Read 1 message sent to a stranger who had shared Cass's
- 7:14videos online. Is there any way you can contact
- 7:17her straight to TikTok? The family want to speak to her
- 7:20as sadly he has taken his own life.
- 7:23So this is claiming that Marcus. Apparently it was allegedly was
- 7:27Marcus who was pretending to be one of his friends, telling,
- 7:32trying to get to cast to say that he has taken his own life
- 7:36because of this whole situation. And I think, you know, a lot of
- 7:39the attention now has gone on cast.
- 7:42It's gone on Jay Muck, it's gone on even Maddie.
- 7:45But let's remember this is about Marcus and what he did to this
- 7:48woman. Like regardless of like what is
- 7:51going on, Like that's what her story like series was about,
- 7:54right? And like warning other women and
- 7:56she was sharing pictures of him and stuff to warn other women.
- 7:59Like, it doesn't have anything to do with like, J Muck and
- 8:02Maddie. And like, for some reason, that
- 8:04situation, I guess has made people like, trust her less.
- 8:07Anyways, that is what I have gathered from the whole
- 8:11situation. If you guys followed this, like,
- 8:12let me know what you guys think. Let me know if there's anything
- 8:15that I missed in this story because that is possible.
- 8:18But yeah, that is a very wild story that is going viral on
- 8:22Australian TikTok right now. The next story that I have for
- 8:25you guys is that fitness influencer Natalie B is under
- 8:29fire after she made it clear that trans women will not be
- 8:32included in her women's only gym.
- 8:35Natalie B is a fitness influencer with over 400,000
- 8:38followers on Instagram and nearly 2,000,000 on TikTok.
- 8:41She recently shared that she's opening a women's only gym in
- 8:44London called The Girls Spot. People were really excited about
- 8:48this because her intention behind it was to make like a
- 8:51safe space for women to exercise.
- 8:53When people ask me why am I doing a women's only gym, I
- 8:56would always say to tackle gym harassment, gym intimidation,
- 8:59sexual assault, and sexual violence that women are facing
- 9:01in mixed gyms. But if you was to ask me today,
- 9:04I would say 100% because of my daughter.
- 9:07Because I'll be absolutely fucking damned if she ever comes
- 9:10home one day, God forbid, and tells me that she experienced
- 9:13any of that and then on top of that had no safe space to go.
- 9:16However, shortly after announcing this gym, Natalie
- 9:19revealed that the girls spot would be a quote single sex gym
- 9:22for those biologically female to ensure quote a space where women
- 9:27who have experienced trauma, harassment or discomfort in Coed
- 9:31gyms can feel at ease. This is such a shame because the
- 9:36intention is there and it's so important and women's only
- 9:41spaces are needed in fitness. Especially because there is
- 9:44actually this new study that found that 61% of women gym
- 9:48goers have experienced harassment from men while
- 9:51working out. Like women deserve to have safe
- 9:54spaces to exercise. I go to a women's only gym now,
- 9:58but it shouldn't be at the expense of trans women,
- 10:01especially because we know that trans women are also the target
- 10:06of gender based violence from men, writer Shivani Day from
- 10:09Metro UK writes Quote. Everyone who signs up to the
- 10:12girls spot is seeking safety from the male gaze, unwanted
- 10:16comments, staring touch and ultimately violence.
- 10:19The trans clients would be no different.
- 10:21I think she needs to reconsider her policy if she seriously
- 10:24wants to have a nuanced, ongoing conversation about the safety of
- 10:29women. I mean, I think that's such a
- 10:30good point. Like, you cannot have feminism
- 10:33without trans women. And I also think this whole
- 10:36situation is really contributing to the deeply problematic
- 10:41narrative or like, stereotypes about the LGBTQ community being
- 10:46like, quote, UN quote predatory. Like that is what this is like
- 10:49indirectly labeling trans women as as someone who goes to the
- 10:54gym all the time. I have gone to commercial gyms
- 10:58for years and years and years, Co Ed commercial gyms for years.
- 11:01I only just joined a women's only gym in the last couple of
- 11:05months. I have been made to feel
- 11:07uncomfortable by men so so so many times.
- 11:11Whether they are a trainer at the gym, whether they're just
- 11:14like a random man at the gym, whatever it is.
- 11:16I have never been made to feel uncomfortable by a woman, by a
- 11:20trans woman or by a trans person ever.
- 11:23And like, I know I don't have the lived experience and I know
- 11:28that a lot of people are disagreeing with labeling her as
- 11:31transphobic for various different reasons.
- 11:34And I don't necessarily like, I'm not here to like get into
- 11:37that. But I just thought talking about
- 11:39this story was really important because I see a larger issue at
- 11:43play, which is like the pop culture space, especially in
- 11:46podcasting, is becoming increasingly discriminatory
- 11:50against, I mean, like everyone's rights, but like, especially
- 11:53trans rights. And like, I just want this
- 11:56space. Like I want you guys to know
- 11:58that this space, this podcast, my media brands like this is a
- 12:02safe space for LGBTQ people, trans people, women.
- 12:07Like we will never shy away from talking about people's rights.
- 12:11We will never shy away from talking about, like, violence
- 12:13against women, sexual harassment, like everything that
- 12:17all of this encompasses, even when it's really scary to do so.
- 12:20And even though it's becoming like, weirdly trendy not to
- 12:25believe in human rights in this house, we believe in human
- 12:29rights. And you can have both.
- 12:31Like, you can have a women's only space.
- 12:34You can make a safe space for women.
- 12:35You can have the intention to be giving that to women and to be,
- 12:40you know, providing this amazing safe experience for women while
- 12:43also including trans women. Like, it doesn't have to be 1 or
- 12:46the other. And we're never going to get
- 12:48anywhere if we don't start, like, actively choosing
- 12:52intersectionality. That doesn't mean that is
- 12:54perfect. I am sure there are so many
- 12:56times personally where I say things on this podcast and it is
- 12:59from such like a privilege cisgender like white woman lens.
- 13:03Like I totally understand that and respect that.
- 13:05But we have to make conscious efforts to do better all the
- 13:09time or like we are literally never going to get anywhere.
- 13:11And like this world, you guys like, things are not well.
- 13:16Things are not well. So yes, I wanted to cover this
- 13:18story because I think it's important to cover things like
- 13:21this and to be talking about it from this perspective of the
- 13:25fact that like so many pop culture spaces lately will not
- 13:29cover stories like this or topics like this.
- 13:31And it is, like I said, kind of becoming trendy in a weird way
- 13:35to be like anti human rights. And that is just not what we
- 13:40believe in here, OK? We also believe in animal rights
- 13:44here. Because the next story I'm going
- 13:46to be sharing how US influencer Samantha Strable is defending
- 13:51herself against criticism when she took a baby wombat from its
- 13:55mother while in Australia. That is a sentence that I do
- 13:59feel would put a Victorian child into a coma.
- 14:02So last week, American hunting influencer Samantha Strable,
- 14:06also known as Sam Jones, posted a video on her Instagram where
- 14:09she snatched a baby wombat from the side of the road from its
- 14:13mother while she was in Australia.
- 14:15Just caught a baby wombat. Look at the mother.
- 14:24It's like, oh, chasing after her.
- 14:31And then Sam puts the baby back on the side of the road and it
- 14:33basically says, like, what? Mom is pissed.
- 14:36I can't even tell you how deeply this has angered the Australian
- 14:40population. I can't, I can't even, like,
- 14:43watch the full video, you guys. It reminds me so much of my
- 14:46little baby dog, my little pump. And I can't imagine if she was
- 14:50snatched from me. And before anybody says that, I
- 14:53snatched her from her mother. We got her from a shelter.
- 14:55OK? We adopt.
- 14:57We don't shop. So yes, like I can't even
- 15:00imagine like my little baby girl getting a snatch from me and how
- 15:04scared she would be. And like, I mean like Lauren
- 15:07discovering empathy. But yeah, like literally
- 15:11thinking about the baby wombat and how scared it would have
- 15:14been. I think about the mom and how
- 15:15just stressed she would have been that her baby was just
- 15:17taken and having no idea. Oh my God, I can't.
- 15:20I literally can't even think about it.
- 15:22OK, so this has caused insane outrage in Australia to the
- 15:26point where our Prime Minister Anthony Albanese actually
- 15:30address this. He said I suggest this so-called
- 15:33influencer. Maybe she tries some other
- 15:35Australian animals. Take another animal that can
- 15:37actually fight back rather than stealing a baby wombat from its
- 15:40mother. See how you go there?
- 15:42And then he recommended the crocodiles so they didn't kick
- 15:45her out of the country, although I know that there were questions
- 15:47around like what her visa would have permitted and stuff.
- 15:50But she did leave Australia after this.
- 15:52So a couple days ago, she posted this lengthy statement on her
- 15:55Instagram. I'm not going to read the whole
- 15:56thing because it's quite long, but she said, am I the villain?
- 16:00Things, dear reader, are not as they see him over holding a
- 16:04wombat. Thousands threaten my life.
- 16:07OK, we shouldn't be threatening her life.
- 16:09Let me be clear. These same people ought to
- 16:11understand the reality of Australia today.
- 16:13For the readers that are so angered by my mistaken attempt
- 16:16to help and that I am a hunter, do not be blind to your country.
- 16:20The Australian government allows and permits the slaughter of
- 16:23wombats. Thousands each year are shot,
- 16:25poisoned to suffer and trapped legally, she says.
- 16:28Your government further spends 10s of millions of taxpayer
- 16:30dollars annually to fly around in helicopters and shoot
- 16:33beautiful horses, deer and pigs out its windows.
- 16:37While the Prime Minister wishes harm on me for picking up a
- 16:39wombat, I implore you to take a good hard look at what is
- 16:42currently being done in Australia surrounding the real
- 16:45issues it faces, the lack of power for 10s of thousands of
- 16:49Aussies and the treatment of its native wildlife.
- 16:51Then decide for yourself if IA person who certainly makes
- 16:55mistakes. I'm really your villain.
- 16:58The statement is wild. And then today it was reported
- 17:00that Sam cancelled an interview that she had scheduled on the
- 17:03project, which is like ATV segment here, and she sent a
- 17:06video message instead. I want to begin by taking
- 17:09responsibility for my actions. What I did was an incredible
- 17:14mistake, and there hasn't been a moment I haven't regretted it.
- 17:19However, there's something much bigger at play here and it would
- 17:22be a disservice to ignore it. If this situation has proven
- 17:26anything, it's proven that Australians care deeply about
- 17:29their wildlife and that is something I intensely admire.
- 17:33Every year, however, the Australian Government issues
- 17:36permits for the killing of thousands and thousands of
- 17:39wombats across Australia, along with millions of Kangaroos.
- 17:43I have just shared never before seen photos of these exact
- 17:46culling operations going on in Australia today on X with the
- 17:50username at Australia Kohl's. The same government that is
- 17:54calling for my head is the one that spends millions of your tax
- 17:58dollars to mass slaughter native Australian animals as well as
- 18:01the Snowy River and Kosciusko Brumbies, well pigs and numerous
- 18:05deer species. So this is a woman who is
- 18:09doubling down, who is like pretending to take
- 18:12accountability, quote UN quote, and saying like, oh, I regret
- 18:14this, but let me deflect and talk about all the reasons why
- 18:19you are so fucked up and wrong. Of course, no one should be
- 18:22sending her death threats. Nobody should be threatening her
- 18:24life. And I understand the escalation
- 18:26of like a country's Prime Minister calling you out for
- 18:28like a video, which you I guess think is like quite innocent,
- 18:32you know, on it's, you know, on reels or whatever, wherever it
- 18:35was, cuz they TikTok, I think it was on reels.
- 18:37It is a, it's been a big reaction here.
- 18:40It's been a big story here, that's for sure.
- 18:42But it's just an example of like such extreme disrespect, not
- 18:47just to wildlife, but I think Australians, I'm not Australian
- 18:49obviously, but I live here. I think they see it as a very
- 18:53big disrespect to like their country, their culture.
- 18:57But yeah, so I think it's just part of like a bigger issue
- 19:00that's playing out right now. But that's that for today.
