- 1:27Speaker 2: the show. Metro News meteorologist Brian Hughes says his words.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Wall-to-wall sunshine today. Great weather after a foggy start to
- 1:33Speaker 2: the morning. Temps below 70s. Clear and calm tonight. Lows
- 1:37Speaker 2: in the upper 40s tomorrow.
- 1:38Speaker 6: Sunny.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Warmer pretty much tomorrow all the way through Saturday. Pretty
- 1:41Speaker 2: much the same every day. Can't beat it. Temperatures in
- 1:44Speaker 2: the upper 70s. Great weather.
- 1:46Speaker 7: Enjoy.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Now for me, People say it's great fall weather. It's
- 1:49Speaker 2: not cool enough for me to call it officially fall weather,
- 1:52Speaker 2: but that's just me. Download the Metro News television app
- 1:56Speaker 2: and follow Brian and his team of weather pros on
- 1:58Speaker 2: social media as well. Of course, what's on everyone's mind
- 2:01Speaker 2: over the last 24 hours has been the breaking news,
- 2:04Speaker 2: followed by more breaking news, followed by more breaking news
- 2:06Speaker 2: with the Charleston Town Center. After not hearing much about
- 2:10Speaker 2: the town center for a long time, yesterday was different.
- 2:13Speaker 2: It started with the mayor's appearance on the show yesterday.
- 2:17Speaker 2: when she dropped a little town center news on us,
- 2:19Speaker 2: and then it continued throughout the day with an announcement
- 2:21Speaker 2: late yesterday, first reported by WSAZ television, that the whole
- 2:25Speaker 2: group that owns the town center says the interior stores
- 2:28Speaker 2: of the mall will be no more at some point
- 2:30Speaker 2: in 2027. I'm going to get into all that a
- 2:33Speaker 2: little bit later on the show. And as we work
- 2:35Speaker 2: our way there, I will tell you, because everybody's got
- 2:37Speaker 2: opinions on this, you're welcome to text them in throughout
- 2:40Speaker 2: the show. via the Tony the Taylor text line 304-935-5008.
- 2:44Speaker 2: We'll get to that coming up a little bit later on. Also,
- 2:47Speaker 2: the preps are going on for the state football championships.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I know you're thinking, well, it's just the first couple
- 2:52Speaker 2: days of October, but it'll be here before you know it.
- 2:55Speaker 2: A lot goes into the state football championships over at
- 2:58Speaker 2: Lately Field. Mike Arbogast, who chairs up the committee there,
- 3:01Speaker 2: also a member of the Kanawha County Board of Education,
- 3:03Speaker 2: is going to join us coming up a little bit
- 3:04Speaker 2: later on in the show as well. I want to
- 3:06Speaker 2: welcome to the show now our good friend Jermon Schmidt
- 3:08Speaker 2: from Goodwill Industries of the Summit. Good morning, sir. Welcome
- 3:11Speaker 2: to the show.
- 3:11Speaker 8: Hey, hey, hey.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Thanks, Dave.
- 3:13Speaker 2: And your big event is coming up, I guess, Night
- 3:15Speaker 2: at the Monte Carlo. Talk about it.
- 3:17Speaker 1: That is correct, yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 8: So every October, around October, we have Night at Monte Carlo.
- 3:22Speaker 8: I think it's our third year doing it. But October 22nd,
- 3:25Speaker 8: it's a Thursday night at Berry Hills. We'll have a
- 3:27Speaker 8: Night at Monte Carlo again. Actually, Woody's going to be
- 3:30Speaker 8: there mixing it up and doing all the music stuff
- 3:32Speaker 8: that he does, getting people hyped up on the dance floor.
- 3:35Speaker 1: But yeah, great event.
- 3:36Speaker 8: And it supports our transportation initiatives here locally, like Wheels
- 3:39Speaker 8: to Work and Mission Mobile, which is basically giving an
- 3:41Speaker 8: answer to people to whether they need a car or
- 3:44Speaker 8: they just need us to come to them. We do
- 3:47Speaker 8: that through those transportation programs. So anyways, that event supports this.
- 3:50Speaker 8: And we're going to have cigars, bourbon, the dancing, raffle games,
- 3:54Speaker 8: all kinds of good stuff.
- 3:55Speaker 9: And Woody Woods.
- 3:56Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 3:56Speaker 8: And Woody Woods, man.
- 3:58Speaker 9: And Woody Woods, man.
- 3:58Speaker 2: So how long has this event been going on? Do
- 4:01Speaker 2: you have any idea?
- 4:01Speaker 1: Third year.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Okay, third year.
- 4:03Speaker 9: Okay.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Actually, I thought it had been longer than that. But,
- 4:05Speaker 2: I mean, I guess it's– the reason I thought that, Jamon,
- 4:08Speaker 2: is because it's become so ingrained in the community now. Um,
- 4:11Speaker 2: that it's, it's, you know, it just seems like it's
- 4:14Speaker 2: been here forever, but it really hasn't been.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 4:16Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 4:16Speaker 2: I feel the same way.
- 4:17Speaker 8: I think, uh, whenever we opened it up the first year,
- 4:20Speaker 8: three years ago, people really embrace it. And each year
- 4:22Speaker 8: after that, as soon as we start getting on socials,
- 4:25Speaker 8: people are all excited about different things. We post a
- 4:27Speaker 8: Pinterest board and people go off on that. So yeah,
- 4:30Speaker 8: I totally agree.
- 4:30Speaker 2: So for people that have never been, what exactly goes on?
- 4:33Speaker 2: I mean, you talked about, you know, the dancing and everything,
- 4:35Speaker 2: but what's the whole concept of the event? I mean,
- 4:37Speaker 2: obviously it's in the title. Not at Monte Carlo. Just
- 4:40Speaker 2: take us through the entire evening.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 4:41Speaker 8: So the dancing, of course, is a part of the event.
- 4:44Speaker 8: But the biggest thing I would say is probably the
- 4:46Speaker 8: raffle game portion. So you can play raffle games throughout
- 4:49Speaker 8: the night. You win these tickets. And then we have
- 4:52Speaker 8: silent auctions also that people are taking part in. Part
- 4:54Speaker 8: of those silent auctions, you have to use your raffle
- 4:57Speaker 8: tickets to actually get entered to win. So people are
- 5:00Speaker 8: playing to basically win these silent auction items. Of course,
- 5:03Speaker 8: there's auction items you can just bid on throughout the night.
- 5:05Speaker 8: But those are the main events of the night, other
- 5:07Speaker 8: than obviously Woody Woods spending it up, having people out
- 5:10Speaker 8: there dancing. And then the VIP section, for those who
- 5:13Speaker 8: get VIPs, cigar and bourbon is always in that outer
- 5:16Speaker 8: deck section of Berry Hills. So you'll usually have 20,
- 5:19Speaker 8: 30 people out there enjoying the cigars and bourbon and
- 5:21Speaker 8: having a good time.
- 5:22Speaker 2: It's just become, Juman, one of those big events every year.
- 5:25Speaker 2: We have several every year. But one of those big
- 5:29Speaker 2: events everybody looks forward to, everybody gets dressed up for,
- 5:31Speaker 2: they come out. Exactly. He said a little night at
- 5:35Speaker 2: the Monte Carlo. We'll give all the details on that
- 5:37Speaker 2: coming up a little bit later on, but I want
- 5:38Speaker 2: to ask you, there's been so many big news items
- 5:41Speaker 2: out of Goodwill here in the Kanawha Valley here lately,
- 5:44Speaker 2: even more to come. I've got you scheduled, I think,
- 5:46Speaker 2: a couple more times on the show to talk about
- 5:48Speaker 2: different things later this month, but talk about some of
- 5:50Speaker 2: the new things.
- 5:50Speaker 8: Yeah, so this year has been, I mean, it's been
- 5:52Speaker 8: crazy as far as the growth. We had the original
- 5:55Speaker 8: Charleston store transform into the outlet. We had Patrick Street
- 5:58Speaker 8: open up earlier in the year, and then we also
- 6:01Speaker 8: actually have the Eleanor location coming up online in August.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Next week? It's crazy. This is Eleanor over in Putnam County.
- 6:09Speaker 8: Yeah, over in Putnam County, yeah.
- 6:10Speaker 2: And this is going to be in the, I call
- 6:12Speaker 2: it a mall. I don't know exactly what it's called,
- 6:14Speaker 2: but it's where the Piggly Wiggly and everything is in Eleanor.
- 6:18Speaker 8: That is correct, yeah. So next Thursday, we'll actually be
- 6:21Speaker 8: opening up that location. And so that'll be a beautiful
- 6:24Speaker 8: new location. The last time we opened up an area
- 6:26Speaker 8: in Putnam was Taze Valley, and I want to say
- 6:28Speaker 8: that was, man, that may have been five years ago now,
- 6:30Speaker 8: I think about it. But anyways, yeah, coming back to
- 6:32Speaker 8: Putnam with a new location.
- 6:34Speaker 2: All right. And the overall mission, the mission statement, if
- 6:38Speaker 2: you will, of Goodwill of the Summit.
- 6:39Speaker 8: Yeah, I would say to keep it simple, it's all
- 6:41Speaker 8: about helping people on their pathway to a job, a
- 6:45Speaker 8: better job or career. So that's why we have transportation initiatives.
- 6:50Speaker 8: We have recovery programs. All of it is geared towards
- 6:54Speaker 8: helping people become sustainable on their own and take their
- 6:57Speaker 8: own path in life.
- 6:58Speaker 2: And that's a real big part of it because, you know, again,
- 7:01Speaker 2: the ultimate goal, you want to help people. but just
- 7:03Speaker 2: giving them stuff is not enough. I mean, you want
- 7:07Speaker 2: to get people back into becoming, you know, members of,
- 7:11Speaker 2: you know, fruitful members of society.
- 7:13Speaker 1: That's exactly it.
- 7:14Speaker 8: Whether it's like an individual, we have an HR who
- 7:17Speaker 8: was off for seven years because she was helping her grandmother, right?
- 7:20Speaker 8: Trying to come back into the workforce or individuals who
- 7:23Speaker 8: have good jobs, but they lost their car. And so
- 7:25Speaker 8: we help the whole cycle of helping people just get
- 7:29Speaker 8: to that point where they need to be, whether it's
- 7:30Speaker 8: a job, a better job or a career.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Now, the event normally sells out or gets pretty close.
- 7:37Speaker 2: So you're going through this year as well. So people
- 7:38Speaker 2: need to go ahead and get their tickets now. So
- 7:41Speaker 2: what's the best way to get tickets?
- 7:42Speaker 8: So on our website, goodwillindustriesofthesummit.com, we have a Night in
- 7:46Speaker 8: Monte Carlo webpage for it. It has tickets and sponsorships.
- 7:50Speaker 8: But if you're on socials, also our Facebook has those links.
- 7:53Speaker 8: So feel free to follow us on there, and then
- 7:55Speaker 8: you'll see the post coming out. And you can click
- 7:57Speaker 8: on the Pinterest board or click on the link for
- 7:59Speaker 8: our website and buy your tickets from there.
- 8:01Speaker 2: And again, it's just one of those big events that
- 8:03Speaker 2: everybody looks forward to every year. Talk about sponsorships, because
- 8:06Speaker 2: I mean, we're not that far away. So people are
- 8:08Speaker 2: going to be, I mean, you're not going to turn
- 8:10Speaker 2: anybody away, but the hours are counting down if somebody
- 8:14Speaker 2: wants to be a sponsor.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 8:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:16Speaker 8: So we have various sponsorships that have like printed materials
- 8:20Speaker 8: added to. So those were probably going to cut off
- 8:22Speaker 8: pretty soon, probably sometime next week to get them over
- 8:25Speaker 8: to the print shop and get that done. But Anyways,
- 8:28Speaker 8: we have sponsorships available actually on our website. It has
- 8:30Speaker 8: the full package on there that you can see. And
- 8:33Speaker 8: those offer VIP tickets, regular tickets, the cigar, bourbon area option,
- 8:39Speaker 8: but also obviously supporting a great cost at the end.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Of the day. And your highlight over the last couple
- 8:45Speaker 2: of years with one of these, is there one moment
- 8:46Speaker 2: that really sticks out? Because I mean... you know, it's
- 8:50Speaker 2: such a great time. I mean, it really is. And
- 8:52Speaker 2: you always see the pictures online afterwards and people always
- 8:54Speaker 2: look at that and go, man, I should have gone
- 8:56Speaker 2: to that. It's a good time. For Jermon Schmidt personally,
- 8:58Speaker 2: was there like a highlight, one or two things that
- 9:00Speaker 2: really stick out the last couple of years?
- 9:01Speaker 1: For sure.
- 9:03Speaker 8: So one of them would be the raffle tickets. So
- 9:06Speaker 8: the items that we choose for the silent auction raffles
- 9:09Speaker 8: are always big items because we want it to be exciting.
- 9:11Speaker 8: And last year it was like looking at a sea
- 9:14Speaker 8: of like, 50, 60 people in front of me that
- 9:16Speaker 8: I could see as I'm like digging my hand to
- 9:19Speaker 8: choose the winner of the silent auction trip. I think
- 9:22Speaker 8: it was like a, I can't remember where it was,
- 9:24Speaker 8: but it was a trip somewhere out.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Of the country.
- 9:26Speaker 8: And I was like, Oh my goodness. I was like,
- 9:28Speaker 8: this is so crazy to watch as people are looking
- 9:30Speaker 8: at their tickets.
- 9:31Speaker 2: And it all is up to you at that point.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 9:33Speaker 2: No pressure, dude. No pressure.
- 9:36Speaker 8: If I could give it to somebody else, I will,
- 9:38Speaker 8: but it'll probably be me again. But yeah, anyways, I
- 9:40Speaker 8: picked the ticket and it was actually one of my
- 9:43Speaker 8: good friends. And so I was like, oh no. People
- 9:46Speaker 8: are going to think I picked it on purpose, but
- 9:48Speaker 8: it was a good night anyways. But yeah, it's a
- 9:50Speaker 8: memorable moment for me, for sure.
- 9:51Speaker 2: All right. Give me, before we let you go, give
- 9:53Speaker 2: me a, without mentioning a name, a success story that's
- 9:57Speaker 2: come out. There's so many, but there's one that really
- 9:59Speaker 2: comes off the top that you say, this is why
- 10:02Speaker 2: we do what we do.
- 10:04Speaker 8: So there was an individual who went through one of
- 10:08Speaker 8: our recovery programs. They have a program called SUD. And
- 10:11Speaker 8: that SUD program, we actually brought it to Charleston, I
- 10:14Speaker 8: think last year, maybe a year and a half ago. Anyways,
- 10:18Speaker 8: there's a lot of individuals that went through the program.
- 10:20Speaker 8: And today, because of going through that program, which helps
- 10:24Speaker 8: basically those individuals hold a job, we transport them to
- 10:28Speaker 8: all their needs. And if they need to be off work,
- 10:31Speaker 8: we cover that too. But anyways, that person went through
- 10:34Speaker 8: this programming. And now today, they're helping individuals in the
- 10:38Speaker 8: community in Parkersburg get to their dreams and their careers.
- 10:42Speaker 8: And so we actually had filming last year with that
- 10:45Speaker 8: individual who works for us. And she was in a
- 10:47Speaker 8: video talking about an individual that she was currently serving
- 10:50Speaker 8: in the Parkersburg community. And so I think about that
- 10:52Speaker 8: and I go, she went through a crazy story with
- 10:55Speaker 8: her own journey of going through substance abuse and having
- 10:58Speaker 8: to go through recovery and then cross that line into like,
- 11:02Speaker 8: now I'm a member of society. Now I'm giving back.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Nobody, I mean, so many times, Jamond, and you know,
- 11:09Speaker 2: in these situations, people will say, well, nobody knows what
- 11:13Speaker 2: I'm going through. Well, here's somebody that lived it before
- 11:16Speaker 2: you did before that person did. And so with a
- 11:18Speaker 2: look and you go, well, you don't understand. Yeah, I
- 11:20Speaker 2: kind of do.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 11:21Speaker 8: It's almost like the best person for the job.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Exactly. 100%.
- 11:24Speaker 1: You can't.
- 11:25Speaker 2: And here's the thing. You can't train that.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Nope.
- 11:27Speaker 2: You know, I mean, that's a, that's real world experiences.
- 11:29Speaker 2: I give us the details, the nights, the times, the websites,
- 11:33Speaker 2: so on and so forth.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Whole shebang.
- 11:35Speaker 8: So October 22nd at Berry Hills at 7 PM, a
- 11:39Speaker 8: good one. She's a summit is where you would find
- 11:41Speaker 8: your tickets at a night in Monte Carlo or go
- 11:43Speaker 8: to the Facebook page. And then you can purchase them
- 11:45Speaker 8: from there. Also, they're on discount right now, so it's
- 11:47Speaker 8: a great opportunity to buy the tickets.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Get your tickets now. Jermon Schmidt, Goodwill to Summit. Appreciate
- 11:51Speaker 2: you being here, man. Thanks a lot. 919, I invite
- 11:53Speaker 2: you to join me every Friday morning, 9 to 6,

- 12:43Speaker 3: The savings are on all summer long at Walker Chevrolet
- 12:47Speaker 3: in Nitro. Listen, if you're planning on dragging that old
- 12:50Speaker 3: worn out ride up and down the turnpike one more time,
- 12:53Speaker 3: just don't. This is the time to upgrade and make
- 12:56Speaker 3: that next trip in comfort and style. This summer, Gene
- 12:59Speaker 3: and Ryan have loaded down the lot with inventory, both
- 13:02Speaker 3: new and used, and that means they're sure to have
- 13:04Speaker 3: the perfect vehicle for you no matter what your summer
- 13:07Speaker 3: adventures have in store. And you know you're going to
- 13:09Speaker 3: get the best deal possible at Walker because Gene and
- 13:12Speaker 3: Ryan built their business the old-fashioned way by making friends.
- 13:15Speaker 3: There are no gimmicks or games at Walker, just honest,
- 13:18Speaker 3: fair deals. So don't push that old vehicle beyond its
- 13:21Speaker 3: limits for another summer or worse. You have to call
- 13:23Speaker 3: that brother-in-law you hate to come pick up your family in.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Beckley because that car couldn't make it.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Back from Myrtle Beach. The new car trucker SUV you've
- 13:31Speaker 3: been dreaming of is waiting on you now at Walker
- 13:34Speaker 3: Chevrolet in the shadow of the interstate bridge just off
- 13:36Speaker 3: the nitro exit of I-64. Walker Chevrolet, making friends one
- 13:41Speaker 3: deal at a time.
- 13:42Speaker 10: Rain-X Wiper Blades are the number one wipers in America.
- 13:46Speaker 10: But we've learned that younger drivers might not know how
- 13:48Speaker 10: good Rain-X wipers are. So, in a blatant attempt to
- 13:52Speaker 10: attract Gen Z drivers, we're changing our name from Rain-X
- 13:56Speaker 10: to Rain-Z. Next time you need wipers, choose Rain-Z. Our
- 14:01Speaker 10: packaging will still say Rain-X because that's too expensive to change.
- 14:05Speaker 10: Just know, in our hearts, we're talking to you, Gen Z. Rain-X,
- 14:10Speaker 10: America's number one choice of wiper blades. Award-winning news, even
- 14:13Speaker 10: on weekends.

- 14:35Speaker 2: 922 on a Tuesday morning. Ryan Nicholson is our producer today. Parents,
- 14:39Speaker 2: if you have a junior or senior in high school, October...
- 14:41Speaker 2: It's the best month to apply to colleges. Take advantage

- 15:02Speaker 1: Tony Vitello, text.
- 15:06Speaker 2: 304-935-5008. Text says, Dave, looking like you and the mayor
- 15:11Speaker 2: upset the whole group so much that they're permanently closing
- 15:14Speaker 2: the town center. I bet they don't sell it, keep
- 15:17Speaker 2: it closed, and use it for their successful business of
- 15:19Speaker 2: collecting tax breaks from abandoned buildings. That is exactly right.
- 15:22Speaker 2: We're going to get in that a little bit later on.
- 15:24Speaker 2: It was the work of myself and the mayor that
- 15:27Speaker 2: led the whole group to their decision. You're exactly right, Texter.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Now you figured it. Pretty much the middle of the
- 15:32Speaker 2: high school football season, and before you know it, it's
- 15:34Speaker 2: going to be time to crown four new state champions.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Mike Arbogast joins me this morning in the Jarrett Construction Studios.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Of course, you know Mike from the Kanawha County Board
- 15:42Speaker 2: of Education, but he's here this morning in his role
- 15:44Speaker 2: as a director and community chair for the WVSSAC State
- 15:48Speaker 2: Football Championships at Lately Field. Mike, good morning and welcome
- 15:52Speaker 2: to the show.
- 15:52Speaker 9: Good morning, Dave. Thanks for having me in.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Now, we're not trying to force a season here, but
- 15:56Speaker 2: it's soon going to be time.
- 15:58Speaker 9: The clock is running.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Yeah. We'll get here quickly, I'm sure. There's so much
- 16:02Speaker 2: work that goes into this.
- 16:04Speaker 9: There is. Matter of fact, we've met multiple times already.
- 16:09Speaker 9: Tim Brady, who courses the CVB, and they are the
- 16:11Speaker 9: actual host of the state football championships, and Joe Varney
- 16:14Speaker 9: over at Lately. So we've been in communication. We're having
- 16:17Speaker 9: our big meeting on Thursday. We have close to 60
- 16:20Speaker 9: people that actually come in and are part of it,
- 16:24Speaker 9: part of the championship committee, and serve as roles. There's
- 16:30Speaker 9: a lot of behind-the-scenes things that people don't see, and
- 16:32Speaker 9: they don't need to see that as far as security,
- 16:35Speaker 9: taking care of the teams, making sure the cheerleaders are
- 16:38Speaker 9: taken care of, bands taken care of, the media, of course,
- 16:41Speaker 9: the officials. So we try to pay attention to detail.
- 16:45Speaker 9: We feel like we're in year three, believe it or not, already.
- 16:49Speaker 9: We felt like we had bumps in the road, but
- 16:51Speaker 9: we felt like we had success the first two years.
- 16:54Speaker 9: And the first year was kind of pressure packed because
- 16:57Speaker 9: of the great job that Wheeling did for a number
- 16:59Speaker 9: of years. And we knew we were going to be
- 17:02Speaker 9: under the radar. So we attacked it that way.
- 17:04Speaker 2: What were some of the things maybe from year one that, okay,
- 17:09Speaker 2: you got year one under your belt and you said, okay, well,
- 17:11Speaker 2: this worked. This didn't. We want to change the time
- 17:15Speaker 2: on this. We want to change the venue on that.
- 17:17Speaker 2: And I'm sure... I mean, as you said, Wheeling did
- 17:19Speaker 2: this for many, many years, and they did a great
- 17:21Speaker 2: job with it.
- 17:22Speaker 9: Yes, they did.
- 17:23Speaker 2: But it is constantly a learning experience. What were some
- 17:25Speaker 2: of the things that you looked at and said, maybe
- 17:28Speaker 2: we'll do this a little bit differently?
- 17:29Speaker 9: It is. And they were minor type things that we
- 17:31Speaker 9: had to adjust from year one. For example, we had
- 17:35Speaker 9: everybody getting dropped off on Piedmont, the team's coming through
- 17:39Speaker 9: and one of the coaches said hey mike man you
- 17:41Speaker 9: know is there any way we i don't have to
- 17:43Speaker 9: make my kids walk across the field the home team
- 17:45Speaker 9: over in the press box so we said yeah absolutely
- 17:48Speaker 9: so now we have a minimum the home team uh
- 17:51Speaker 9: on the west end of the stadium they can get
- 17:53Speaker 9: off the bus and come straight in and in coordinating
- 17:55Speaker 9: times you know we have the equipment dropped off a
- 17:57Speaker 9: day early Um, and we have a group of guys
- 18:01Speaker 9: that go in and do all the locker room prep. They, they, uh,
- 18:04Speaker 9: buff and shine the helmets and hang up the jerseys.
- 18:06Speaker 2: I mean, it's gotta be pretty cool. I, something, I
- 18:08Speaker 2: guess I, as long as I've been doing this and
- 18:10Speaker 2: been in the media, been around sports that I did,
- 18:12Speaker 2: I just never realized was part of it. So when
- 18:14Speaker 2: these teams come down from. Fill in names here, whatever
- 18:17Speaker 2: the school is. Their uniforms are already up there. The
- 18:21Speaker 2: helmets are already buffed and shined and ready to go.
- 18:25Speaker 2: And that's got to be a good feeling for a
- 18:26Speaker 2: kid who might have a little bit of nervous energy anyway,
- 18:30Speaker 2: you know, walking through, maybe playing for the first time or,
- 18:33Speaker 2: you know, in their career walking through. And seeing that
- 18:35Speaker 2: helmet at this point of the season has already shined up.
- 18:38Speaker 2: And they didn't do it. The coaches didn't do it.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Your volunteers did it.
- 18:41Speaker 9: Yes, absolutely. And that's what we wanted. I mean, we
- 18:43Speaker 9: want this to be a bowl-type experience and a bowl-type
- 18:46Speaker 9: atmosphere and put it, you know, to the college-level type thing.
- 18:49Speaker 9: So hopefully the kids are excited about that when they
- 18:52Speaker 9: come in. But there's more to it than that. You know,
- 18:54Speaker 9: they come to town early. Tim has worked with, you know,
- 18:58Speaker 9: the people at GoMark Park. And then we've worked with
- 19:02Speaker 9: the people at the Capitol.
- 19:04Speaker 5: So, yeah.
- 19:05Speaker 9: We have activities planned for the, for the teams that
- 19:07Speaker 9: they choose to participate. You know, a lot of times
- 19:10Speaker 9: coaches go, no, Mike, we're not interested in that stuff.
- 19:12Speaker 9: We're there to win a state football championship. And I
- 19:14Speaker 9: get it. Exactly.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:16Speaker 9: And that, that may be a small distraction, but also
- 19:19Speaker 9: a time killer. And then they're, they're also welcome to
- 19:21Speaker 9: come to the other games as well.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Well, I think sometimes also it gets them out of
- 19:25Speaker 2: their own head a little bit.
- 19:26Speaker 9: Yes.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Not to play amateur psychologist here, but I'm just saying
- 19:31Speaker 2: that in that situation, you got to, You know, you're
- 19:33Speaker 2: an athlete. You sit around and you got too much
- 19:35Speaker 2: time to think sometimes. Maybe you do need a little
- 19:38Speaker 2: bit of a, you need to have a good meal.
- 19:39Speaker 2: You need to go out and enjoy something going on
- 19:41Speaker 2: in the town, you know, to kind of stop thinking,
- 19:44Speaker 2: stop overthinking it as coaches say.
- 19:46Speaker 9: And I coached at South Charleston high school and I
- 19:48Speaker 9: get it. You know, when you get to that level.
- 19:49Speaker 9: and to that point in the year, you're trying to
- 19:51Speaker 9: win a state football championship. But we do have sit-down
- 19:56Speaker 9: meals for them as well here at local restaurants. I mean,
- 19:58Speaker 9: it's not like they're not going– to a fast food
- 20:02Speaker 9: place Tim's arranged that and I helped him out with
- 20:04Speaker 9: one of them down at Eagle's Nest but so the
- 20:07Speaker 9: kids get to go in with the coaches and have
- 20:09Speaker 9: a sit down meals and we also have a banquet
- 20:13Speaker 9: on Thursday night where we give away 10 $ 1, 000 scholarships
- 20:18Speaker 9: to students statewide and their parents are invited down Dr.
- 20:21Speaker 9: Paula Potter our superintendent chairs that she's done it from
- 20:24Speaker 9: year one forward. So that's a nice event. They do
- 20:28Speaker 9: a great job with that. And that's over to Marriott.
- 20:31Speaker 2: And again, that's part of the experience because the game
- 20:34Speaker 2: itself is why they're here. But most of these athletes,
- 20:38Speaker 2: I mean, let's be honest, Mike, you know, you're a
- 20:40Speaker 2: former coach. You know this, most of them. This may be,
- 20:43Speaker 2: if it's not the last game that they play, if
- 20:45Speaker 2: they go, if they're lucky enough to go on and
- 20:47Speaker 2: play at one of the, you know, up on a
- 20:49Speaker 2: higher level, it's one of the last games more than
- 20:51Speaker 2: likely that they're going to play. And they don't want
- 20:54Speaker 2: to just think about their championship or their run in
- 20:57Speaker 2: the playoffs or the run in the championships. It's the
- 21:00Speaker 2: experience that goes along with it, and that's a big
- 21:02Speaker 2: part of it.
- 21:03Speaker 9: They're going to remember the lifetime, and that's why we
- 21:05Speaker 9: want it to be a positive experience. I mean, you
- 21:07Speaker 9: think about it, we hook up with our buddies, and
- 21:09Speaker 9: they still talk about you know, in their fifties and
- 21:12Speaker 9: sixties and still talk about what happened back in the
- 21:14Speaker 9: high school days of playing ball.
- 21:16Speaker 2: What was supposed to have happened.
- 21:17Speaker 9: Sometimes.
- 21:18Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Talking to Mike Arbigast. Uh, but, uh, how many people
- 21:22Speaker 2: does it take off the top of your head to
- 21:24Speaker 2: pull this thing?
- 21:25Speaker 9: We have close to 60. Okay. Um, now that, that
- 21:28Speaker 9: also includes, you know, we worked with Charleston police department,
- 21:31Speaker 9: Joey Crawford at the sheriff's office. So that includes that security.
- 21:35Speaker 9: And then of course you have your, uh, The team
- 21:39Speaker 9: hosts that come down, the officials host, the band host,
- 21:42Speaker 9: cheerleading hosts. I have two co-directors, Jim Hamrick and Bryce Castor,
- 21:46Speaker 9: who are both longtime legend coaches here in the state
- 21:49Speaker 9: of West Virginia. So they assist with that, too. Then
- 21:52Speaker 9: you think about, you know, you've got to have VIP hosts.
- 21:56Speaker 9: And Tim's really good about taking care of our people
- 22:00Speaker 9: that are working this. He puts up a hospitality room,
- 22:03Speaker 9: and we make sure they get fed while they're there working.
- 22:06Speaker 9: So about 60.
- 22:07Speaker 2: And you can always use more? I mean, if people
- 22:09Speaker 2: are listening right now and they say, well, this sounds
- 22:11Speaker 2: like something cool I'd like to get involved with, you're
- 22:14Speaker 2: good at this point?
- 22:16Speaker 9: We actually got all the positions filled at this point.
- 22:18Speaker 5: Okay, cool.
- 22:18Speaker 9: That's good. That's good to hear. But, you know, anybody
- 22:20Speaker 9: that wants to come around, give me a shout. Yeah.
- 22:22Speaker 2: All right. You're not hard to find.
- 22:23Speaker 9: All right.
- 22:24Speaker 2: I got a couple texts here for you, okay?
- 22:26Speaker 9: Okay, sure.
- 22:27Speaker 2: One says, I think you guys do a great job
- 22:28Speaker 2: with the state football championship. One thing I would like
- 22:30Speaker 2: to see, though, is that giant yellow wall that sits
- 22:33Speaker 2: behind one of the zones. How about putting some paint
- 22:36Speaker 2: on it? Or better yet, maybe... uh clean it up
- 22:38Speaker 2: clean up the weeds are going over top of it
- 22:40Speaker 2: really make charleston shine i.
- 22:42Speaker 9: Certainly won't argue argue that um i'm not actually in
- 22:45Speaker 9: charge of lately phil but you know what i am
- 22:47Speaker 9: on the board of education how about i have a
- 22:49Speaker 9: conversation with joe varney thank.
- 22:50Speaker 2: You for that by the way jack says for arbor
- 22:53Speaker 2: gas even though the majorette festival was last week one
- 22:56Speaker 2: thing that ruined it uh handing out these stupid medals
- 22:58Speaker 2: to every school instead of giving third place second place
- 23:01Speaker 2: and first place trophies in each category no reason for
- 23:03Speaker 2: these kids to work hard to and have after-school practices.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Everybody gets a medal. A lot of people in the
- 23:07Speaker 2: stands do not like this. Please stop at the medals
- 23:09Speaker 2: and bring back the trophies.
- 23:11Speaker 9: Okay, I'm not in charge of that personally either, but...
- 23:14Speaker 9: Is there anything else that.
- 23:17Speaker 2: People would like to talk to Mike Arbogast about things
- 23:19Speaker 2: he has nothing to do with? What about the closing
- 23:22Speaker 2: of the town center, Mike? Do you want to weigh.
- 23:24Speaker 9: In on that? I hate that. I remember the days
- 23:28Speaker 9: when it boomed, that's for sure. I'd love to see
- 23:31Speaker 9: something good happen with that property. But back to the
- 23:33Speaker 9: Majorette Festival, we did help, but the Board of Education
- 23:35Speaker 9: members do come and Hand out the awards. And we
- 23:39Speaker 9: do have a guy, Mark Davis, at Kanawha County Schools
- 23:42Speaker 9: that's over music and arts in Kanawha County Schools. And
- 23:44Speaker 9: he does a fantastic job, man. I've worked with him
- 23:47Speaker 9: when I was principal at South Charleston High School, and
- 23:50Speaker 9: they do a great job. And I'm really not sure
- 23:52Speaker 9: how to answer that question. I don't know what the...
- 23:55Speaker 9: background is on that.
- 23:56Speaker 2: We'll look into it we'll look into it you know
- 23:58Speaker 2: your um your group couldn't do this uh mike without
- 24:02Speaker 2: a lot of buy-in from the businesses as well when
- 24:04Speaker 2: it was first announced a couple years ago that this
- 24:06Speaker 2: championship after so many years in wheeling island stadium was
- 24:08Speaker 2: coming back to the capital city you know so much
- 24:11Speaker 2: goes into it but you got to have a buy-in
- 24:13Speaker 2: from the city it's been the businesses the administration the
- 24:16Speaker 2: county I mean, everybody's got to kind of come together
- 24:19Speaker 2: on this.
- 24:19Speaker 9: And Mayor Goodwin's been great to work with as well.
- 24:22Speaker 9: And like I say, our direct contact is Tim Brady,
- 24:24Speaker 9: who's the head of the CVB. And Tim does a
- 24:27Speaker 9: great job, but you are correct. And it's been embraced
- 24:31Speaker 9: by the city of Charleston and the Kanawha Valley at large.
- 24:34Speaker 9: And we do have several sponsors that have stepped up
- 24:36Speaker 9: to help us. Namely, you know, here again, restaurants, and
- 24:41Speaker 9: they're allowing us to come in and do a sit-down
- 24:43Speaker 9: meal that, you know, Tim gets that worked out with them.
- 24:46Speaker 9: And then, of course, Tim's also in charge of making
- 24:48Speaker 9: sure the hotels are all taken care of for our
- 24:51Speaker 9: kids that are coming in. And, you know, our big
- 24:54Speaker 9: thing is we want the fans to enjoy it. And
- 24:56Speaker 9: we've had great crowds. We've had over 10,000 people, not
- 25:00Speaker 9: paid attendance, but 10,000 people attend those games the last
- 25:03Speaker 9: two years. And it has seemed exciting. football games and
- 25:07Speaker 9: i don't you know three of the four state championships
- 25:10Speaker 9: last year went down to the wire to the last
- 25:12Speaker 9: play of the game how often you see that uh
- 25:15Speaker 9: so it was exciting to see and i think we're
- 25:17Speaker 9: going to have the same thing this year i mean
- 25:19Speaker 9: you look at double a right now it is packed
- 25:21Speaker 9: at the top and in each category each one of
- 25:24Speaker 9: these classifications they're anywhere from you know six to eight
- 25:27Speaker 9: teams that could potentially step forward to win this thing.
- 25:30Speaker 2: And you know the new power index that we do
- 25:33Speaker 2: hit yesterday. You can go to wvmetronews.com if you haven't
- 25:36Speaker 2: seen that. Also, the playoff rankings will come out every Tuesday,
- 25:40Speaker 2: I think, so you've got a chance to take a
- 25:42Speaker 2: look at those today as well.
- 25:43Speaker 9: Yep, and they're jockeying for position. I mean, you want
- 25:46Speaker 9: a home field advantage when you can, when you can
- 25:48Speaker 9: get those things. I know we used to always, we
- 25:51Speaker 9: looked at that thing close every week, trying to make sure,
- 25:54Speaker 9: see if we were going to be able to get
- 25:55Speaker 9: a home game advantage.
- 25:57Speaker 2: And this has been, I mean, this season so far
- 26:00Speaker 2: has been really exciting for Kanawha Valley. I mean, there's
- 26:02Speaker 2: been some really good, I mean, you've mentioned South Charleston
- 26:06Speaker 2: no less than 78 times now. So I want to
- 26:09Speaker 2: make sure– I'm just messing with you, man. But I'm
- 26:11Speaker 2: just saying it's been a resurgent year after they struggled
- 26:14Speaker 2: the last couple of years. They've done well. We know
- 26:16Speaker 2: what GW's done. We know what Herbert Hoover's doing right
- 26:19Speaker 2: here in the Kanawha Valley. There's some quality football people.
- 26:21Speaker 9: And those two teams you just mentioned are stacked. I've
- 26:24Speaker 9: watched Hoover play and GW play, and there is some
- 26:28Speaker 9: good football going on in the Valley. I encourage people
- 26:30Speaker 9: to get out and go watch some games. They've had
- 26:33Speaker 9: good crowds at the games that I've been at. Um,
- 26:36Speaker 9: and here again, it's exciting time of year. If you
- 26:38Speaker 9: like high school football, which I, I love.
- 26:41Speaker 7: I do.
- 26:41Speaker 2: I love it as well. Texas, anyone, so you're a
- 26:43Speaker 2: popular guy here, Mike, has anyone thought about having a
- 26:46Speaker 2: parade with the teams and bands of all the playoff
- 26:48Speaker 2: teams before the first game? That could be something extra
- 26:51Speaker 2: family oriented. that people could attend like a championship parade.
- 26:53Speaker 9: Thank you for that. And yes, we have discussed that.
- 26:57Speaker 9: And the issue is, is getting the, all the teams
- 27:00Speaker 9: in town to do that. I mean, some of the
- 27:01Speaker 9: teams don't play till Saturday and they do travel. Uh,
- 27:05Speaker 9: but we, we talked about that initially trying to do
- 27:07Speaker 9: some type of parade, but, uh, if you're a Martinsburg
- 27:11Speaker 9: high school, they've been here the last two years and
- 27:13Speaker 9: you're playing on Saturday, you know, when would you have it?
- 27:16Speaker 9: You got games on Friday at noon at seven o'clock
- 27:19Speaker 9: and then Got to banquet on Thursday night. So where
- 27:22Speaker 9: that sounds good in theory.
- 27:23Speaker 8: It is.
- 27:24Speaker 1: It's a great idea.
- 27:24Speaker 9: And I'll do. I think it's a great idea. I'm
- 27:26Speaker 9: not sure that we could actually pull that off because
- 27:28Speaker 9: that was discussed.
- 27:30Speaker 11: All right.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Give us the dates again, Mike.
- 27:32Speaker 9: December 4th and 5th. Friday, Saturday. Hang on just a second.
- 27:36Speaker 9: Let me double check that. It's going to get here quick.
- 27:39Speaker 9: I know that. That would be Friday and Saturday. December
- 27:45Speaker 9: 4th and 5th.
- 27:47Speaker 2: I want to make sure that you make all efforts
- 27:49Speaker 2: to attend because it is an exciting time. I want
- 27:52Speaker 2: to ask you to switch gears here for just one second.
- 27:55Speaker 2: I didn't tell you we were going to do this,
- 27:56Speaker 2: but we're going to do it because it's the way
- 27:57Speaker 2: I roll. As a board member, stepping away from that role,
- 28:01Speaker 2: but as a board member of the Kanawha County Board
- 28:03Speaker 2: of Education, Mike, when voters go to the polls next
- 28:06Speaker 2: month here in Kanawha County, they're going to be looking
- 28:08Speaker 2: at this education levy, same one that's been in effect
- 28:11Speaker 2: since the 1930s. Anything you want to say about that?
- 28:15Speaker 9: I think it's– Kanawha County has– and myself included. I
- 28:19Speaker 9: live here in Kanawha County, and I voted for that levy,
- 28:21Speaker 9: and I vote for the ambulance levy. You know, I
- 28:24Speaker 9: think it's important that we support these levies that are
- 28:28Speaker 9: doing good for our communities. And it's important for this
- 28:33Speaker 9: thing to pass. And I've seen– Some posts. And do
- 28:38Speaker 9: you know that everything you read on social media and
- 28:40Speaker 9: Facebook's not necessarily true, Dave?
- 28:42Speaker 6: Oh, no.
- 28:43Speaker 9: I try to educate everyone.
- 28:45Speaker 10: No.
- 28:45Speaker 9: Really? Wow. So just for a couple things. Number one,
- 28:49Speaker 9: I'll say about this quickly without going into the details,
- 28:53Speaker 9: is that your taxes do not go up. This is
- 28:56Speaker 9: an existing levy. And I've also had people say, well,
- 28:58Speaker 9: there's already three things on my tax ticket. Well, the
- 29:01Speaker 9: first one is the state funding formula. That's not what
- 29:04Speaker 9: this is. And the one on the bottom, the legislature
- 29:07Speaker 9: passed a few years ago, for whatever reason, I'm sure
- 29:09Speaker 9: they had rationale for it, that the libraries cannot run
- 29:12Speaker 9: their own levy. They had to run it through the
- 29:14Speaker 9: school system. So the third one you see goes to
- 29:17Speaker 9: the libraries and ours is the one in the middle.
- 29:21Speaker 9: It's about 20% of our budget. It's important. It supports
- 29:24Speaker 9: extracurricular activities. It got the, you know, the voters wanted
- 29:28Speaker 9: AstroTurf on the fields and that passed and There's a
- 29:32Speaker 9: shelf life on those, so this current levy that we're
- 29:35Speaker 9: trying to push through will will go in toward repair
- 29:38Speaker 9: and replacement as time comes for those for the wear
- 29:41Speaker 9: and tear on that um And I've seen good from that.
- 29:45Speaker 9: I know there's people out there that say, ah, you
- 29:47Speaker 9: shouldn't have wasted that money on the AstroTurf. Well, it's
- 29:50Speaker 9: benefited our communities. There's youth leagues on there, there's soccer leagues, lacrosse, football,
- 29:56Speaker 9: there's a lot of people using it within the communities,
- 29:58Speaker 9: and I think it's been a great thing. And curriculum-wise,
- 30:02Speaker 9: and something I push for even as a principal, we're
- 30:05Speaker 9: wanting to get the CTE programs and robotics programs down
- 30:09Speaker 9: to our middle schools, and I think that's important. You know,
- 30:11Speaker 9: not every kid's Once they go to college, they're going
- 30:14Speaker 9: to be able to go to college. But, you know,
- 30:16Speaker 9: our goal as school administrators and school teachers is to
- 30:20Speaker 9: prepare our kids for life after high school where they
- 30:23Speaker 9: can be contributors to society. And the more things that
- 30:26Speaker 9: we can offer along those lines, the better off we're
- 30:29Speaker 9: going to be. So, you know, there's some other things
- 30:32Speaker 9: on there. They're wanting to– Paul is wanting to upgrade
- 30:35Speaker 9: the playground equipment for elementary schools in the county, and
- 30:39Speaker 9: that will come from this levy. And I– And I
- 30:41Speaker 9: will tell you this, everything is online. If you go
- 30:44Speaker 9: to the Kanawha County Schools website, if you have questions
- 30:47Speaker 9: about it, please educate yourself about it. Call up the
- 30:51Speaker 9: central office and ask questions if you have something specific.
- 30:55Speaker 9: But I will say this about Dr. Potter, she is
- 30:58Speaker 9: transparent and she's trying to be as transparent as possible.
- 31:01Speaker 9: So everything with our budgeting... And what the levy specifically
- 31:05Speaker 9: goes for is readily available on the Kanawha County Schools website.
- 31:09Speaker 9: Thank you for asking about that.
- 31:10Speaker 6: All right.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Again, one other question here for you, Mike.
- 31:12Speaker 6: Great.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Is the price going up to $ 75 a seat this
- 31:16Speaker 2: year while I have to stay at $ 50? I know
- 31:18Speaker 2: I'm exaggerating, but we've witnessed a decline in attendance during
- 31:21Speaker 2: the regular season. As admission prices have gone up, it
- 31:24Speaker 2: costs a lot to get into these games for large families.
- 31:26Speaker 9: Yeah, well, I'm not in charge of pricing, but that is,
- 31:32Speaker 9: to my knowledge, the SSAC is in charge of all
- 31:35Speaker 9: state tournaments, including the playoff games. And to my knowledge,
- 31:40Speaker 9: that price has not gone up. Don't quote me on that.
- 31:45Speaker 9: But that would be a question for the Secondary Schools
- 31:47Speaker 9: Activities Commission, and they're also readily available. They have websites
- 31:52Speaker 9: and phone numbers. You can give them a call and
- 31:54Speaker 9: find out. If it's going up, to my knowledge, it
- 31:56Speaker 9: is not. I have not been told that.
- 31:57Speaker 5: All right.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Hopefully it won't.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Mike Arbogast, I appreciate you being here, man. It's always
- 32:00Speaker 2: a pleasure.
- 32:01Speaker 9: Dave, thanks for having me.
- 32:02Speaker 2: You know, I'm just riding you a little bit about
- 32:03Speaker 2: South Charleston. It's okay. Being a Logan guy.
- 32:05Speaker 9: Spent a lot of time there, and also we spent
- 32:08Speaker 9: a lot of time in the L.A. area playing ball
- 32:10Speaker 9: down there back in the day.
- 32:11Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 32:12Speaker 9: Great to see you, and I'm glad you're up and
- 32:15Speaker 9: about and doing well.
- 32:16Speaker 11: All right.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Appreciate it, man. Thanks a lot. 21 minutes away from 10.

- 36:08Speaker 2: but I kind of make up my own rules anyway.
- 36:11Speaker 2: A company email just went out. Our own Chris Lawrence said,
- 36:14Speaker 2: Picking up a prestigious national honor from the National Association
- 36:18Speaker 2: of State Radio Networks, his coverage of the July floods,
- 36:21Speaker 2: officially named Best Newscast of 2026 by the organization. Cool
- 36:27Speaker 2: stuff on that. We'll have more about that coming up.
- 36:29Speaker 2: But Mr. Lawrence, congratulations, man. That is good stuff. Good
- 36:33Speaker 2: stuff in a tragic situation. Of course, Chris's coverage of
- 36:36Speaker 2: the July floods, officially named Best Newscast Nationwide of 2026.
- 36:42Speaker 2: by the National Association of State Radio Networks. So congratulations, Mr. Lawrence.
- 36:47Speaker 2: All right, so let's get into this town center thing. Now,
- 36:50Speaker 2: you've heard me give my opinion of the Charleston Town
- 36:53Speaker 2: Center on this show, which was, I mean, in decline
- 36:57Speaker 2: when I started doing this show nearly six and a
- 37:00Speaker 2: half years ago. But it's gone drastically downhill ever since.
- 37:06Speaker 2: And look, Arbogast and I were just talking about that.
- 37:09Speaker 2: We all remember the town center. of the 1980s and 1990s.
- 37:14Speaker 2: I didn't grow up in Charleston in the Valley here
- 37:17Speaker 2: like Mike did, but I can certainly remember as a
- 37:20Speaker 2: teenager coming to the town center and, and how cool
- 37:23Speaker 2: it was, you know, Logan, where I grew up at
- 37:25Speaker 2: that time, didn't even have a McDonald's or a Taco Bell. Uh,
- 37:30Speaker 2: so at the time it was so cool to come here,
- 37:34Speaker 2: walk up to that picnic area. You know, I've always
- 37:37Speaker 2: been a foodie, even as a teenager and, and to
- 37:40Speaker 2: look at all those choices, man, And, of course, the
- 37:43Speaker 2: shopping that went along with it, too. And coming to
- 37:46Speaker 2: the town center was a rite of passage when you
- 37:50Speaker 2: came to the, say, basketball tournament or a concert event
- 37:53Speaker 2: or whatever. So what went wrong? Well, several things. First
- 38:01Speaker 2: of all, the model of downtown malls where you pay
- 38:07Speaker 2: for parking is pretty much done nationwide. So the development
- 38:13Speaker 2: out at South Ridge and the shops at Trace Fork,
- 38:16Speaker 2: et cetera, et cetera, that certainly didn't help. But a
- 38:21Speaker 2: simple Google search will show you the model of a
- 38:25Speaker 2: mall like the Charleston Town Center in a downtown area
- 38:29Speaker 2: where you have to pay for parking. It's pretty much
- 38:32Speaker 2: over in America right now. I mean, that particular model
- 38:35Speaker 2: of shopping malls. And look, I have always said shopping
- 38:38Speaker 2: malls are always going to be around. There will always
- 38:40Speaker 2: be a place because sometimes people just like to go look.
- 38:42Speaker 2: I know people order online. I don't, but some people do.
- 38:46Speaker 2: They order online. I get that. But there's something to
- 38:48Speaker 2: be said for just going and looking at stuff. But
- 38:51Speaker 2: the model that the town center has, it just ain't
- 38:54Speaker 2: happening around the country. And as I said, I referenced
- 38:58Speaker 2: the online shopping aspect of it. The perceived threats... of
- 39:06Speaker 2: the town center not being safe due to the homeless
- 39:08Speaker 2: or whatever, as I said, perceived, perceived, and you're going
- 39:14Speaker 2: to have problems. So the mall is on the decline,
- 39:18Speaker 2: all right? This Hull group gets a hold of it.
- 39:22Speaker 2: And look, I interviewed the man, Mr. Hull himself, about
- 39:27Speaker 2: a Southern as a guy as you could possibly get
- 39:30Speaker 2: out of Augusta GA, which I like that part about him.
- 39:36Speaker 2: And you thought, we thought, that he and the company
- 39:43Speaker 2: really wanted to do the right thing and to make
- 39:47Speaker 2: the mall flourish again. Well, a simple online search of
- 39:56Speaker 2: the way that the whole group does business will tell
- 39:58Speaker 2: you that's not the way the whole group does business, period,
- 40:03Speaker 2: in any market. And so the rumors begin, the Facebook
- 40:08Speaker 2: journalists with their degrees of Zuckerberg U put out what
- 40:13Speaker 2: they knew, what they thought they know, whatever. So yesterday,
- 40:16Speaker 2: fast forward to yesterday, and I have the mayor. uh,
- 40:21Speaker 2: mayor Goodwin on this show is she comes on the
- 40:22Speaker 2: first Monday of every month to take questions, comments, concerns,
- 40:25Speaker 2: big props for that, because I can name on one hand,
- 40:28Speaker 2: the number of political leaders that step into this studio
- 40:31Speaker 2: and say, open line, I'll take whatever you got. She's
- 40:34Speaker 2: one most won't.
- 40:35Speaker 9: She does.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Um, the mayor was on this show yesterday. And when
- 40:41Speaker 2: I ask about the town center, you know, she said
- 40:44Speaker 2: she was hopeful that a group of, of, of local folks, um,
- 40:51Speaker 2: wanted to do something with it. And then around 6 p.m.
- 40:57Speaker 2: news time last night, thereabouts, WSAC television first out that
- 41:02Speaker 2: the owners of the mall currently, the whole group, say
- 41:07Speaker 2: that they will close the mall at some point in 2027,
- 41:11Speaker 2: the interior stores, probably late spring or early summer of
- 41:16Speaker 2: next year. Now, Chili's and Outback are would not be
- 41:20Speaker 2: affected since, of course, they have street access. Now, according
- 41:26Speaker 2: to reporting from WSAZ television, the whole group, this is
- 41:29Speaker 2: what they said, had no interested investors, no offers, and
- 41:34Speaker 2: no developers at this time. Now, again, this is according
- 41:38Speaker 2: to the whole group, which I'm going to be honest
- 41:40Speaker 2: with you, I would take with the biggest grain of
- 41:42Speaker 2: salt available since they've not exactly been as upfront, in
- 41:47Speaker 2: my opinion, my opinion only, of what they could have
- 41:50Speaker 2: been on anything, including the real reasons that they buy
- 41:55Speaker 2: these properties in the first place. So I'll say it.
- 41:58Speaker 2: I'm calling BS. Now, not on the WSCZ reporting. I
- 42:02Speaker 2: don't mean that. I want to be clear on that.
- 42:03Speaker 2: But on the whole group statement therein, there was some talk,
- 42:09Speaker 2: if you recall. Mayor talked about it. Other people talked
- 42:11Speaker 2: about it, about possibly getting the whole group to then
- 42:16Speaker 2: basically donate property the town center property back to the city.
- 42:22Speaker 2: That apparently is not going to be happening. So let's
- 42:28Speaker 2: cut to the chase here. And the following statements and
- 42:32Speaker 2: opinions are mine and mine only. The days of the
- 42:37Speaker 2: town center being the town center that we all knew
- 42:40Speaker 2: and loved in 1989 are over and done with. They're never, ever,
- 42:45Speaker 2: ever going to return. And sorry, but that one story
- 42:49Speaker 2: you want, that Trader Joe's, that Whole Foods, that Dave
- 42:54Speaker 2: and Buster's, et cetera, ain't saving the town center, period.
- 43:00Speaker 2: So you can get off, maybe get off Facebook and
- 43:04Speaker 2: talk to real world business people and retailers, and they
- 43:09Speaker 2: will tell you that. And look, from day one, When
- 43:15Speaker 2: the problems started, I was under the belief, and still am,
- 43:22Speaker 2: that a multi-use facility is the way to go. I
- 43:28Speaker 2: am still a big supporter of the Sports Center. I
- 43:33Speaker 2: don't know if, when, what it's going to be, but
- 43:37Speaker 2: I'm still a big supporter of that. High-end office spaces,
- 43:42Speaker 2: some retail spaces. some residential, some limited retail, restaurant or two.
- 43:49Speaker 2: But the days of the 1989 town center are over.
- 43:54Speaker 2: And the sooner I think we realize that, the better.
- 43:57Speaker 2: And for people that say, well, and look, I've been
- 43:59Speaker 2: one of them. My wife and I, what, three weeks ago,
- 44:03Speaker 2: we're at the Huntington Mall, Saturday afternoon, bustling. I mean,
- 44:07Speaker 2: it was. However, it's apples to oranges, man. Because if
- 44:12Speaker 2: you look at the Huntington Mall, you look at the
- 44:15Speaker 2: Ashland Town Center. I was there for probably three or
- 44:17Speaker 2: four months ago. Both doing great, both on Saturday afternoon.
- 44:22Speaker 2: But the big difference is, especially with the Huntington Mall,
- 44:25Speaker 2: look at what's around it. The Huntington Mall was on
- 44:28Speaker 2: its last legs 15, 20 years ago. And then maybe
- 44:33Speaker 2: a little bit longer. But then suddenly, when you saw
- 44:36Speaker 2: all this stuff from Tanyard Station and all these other
- 44:39Speaker 2: coals and all the other things that aren't technically on
- 44:41Speaker 2: mall property but are around it, it's a driver to
- 44:46Speaker 2: the mall. The town center doesn't have that. And there's
- 44:50Speaker 2: no way to even do that. And I'm sorry, everybody's
- 44:55Speaker 2: entitled to their opinion. I just happen to be the
- 44:57Speaker 2: guy with the microphone, all right? But for people to
- 45:00Speaker 2: come out and say, well, if we put this store in,
- 45:03Speaker 2: this is going to be the one that's going to sit. No,
- 45:05Speaker 2: it's not. It's not. The best use, in my opinion,
- 45:09Speaker 2: is somebody who does not live in Charleston, but is
- 45:11Speaker 2: here at least six days a week, sometimes seven, and
- 45:15Speaker 2: works in downtown Charleston. The best use of that is
- 45:17Speaker 2: going to be some sort of a multi-use facility where
- 45:20Speaker 2: a little bit of everything is involved in that. And
- 45:22Speaker 2: that has been done. That has been done in other cities.
- 45:25Speaker 2: When you take a mall in an area like that,
- 45:27Speaker 2: and you turn it into several things. We have a
- 45:31Speaker 2: housing crisis in West Virginia. I mean, here in the
- 45:34Speaker 2: Kanawha Valley, we have a housing crisis. We don't have
- 45:36Speaker 2: enough housing. You put something like that in. I mean,
- 45:41Speaker 2: people say, well, nobody can afford $ 1, 200, $ 1, 500, $ 2, 000 a
- 45:42Speaker 2: month rent. Well, over in Putnam County, there's a waiting
- 45:47Speaker 2: list for $ 2, 000 a month properties.
- 45:49Speaker 9: All right?
- 45:49Speaker 2: I'm just telling you. I'm just telling you. That's what's
- 45:53Speaker 2: got to go there. Now, it could be Sports facility,
- 45:56Speaker 2: if that happens, I'm 100% on board with that. It
- 45:59Speaker 2: could be any number of things. You want to have
- 46:01Speaker 2: something for people to do when they come in for
- 46:03Speaker 2: all these tournaments, some sort of an athletic complex with
- 46:06Speaker 2: these things that they have in other cities. Okay, fine.
- 46:09Speaker 2: But if you think it's going to be, if you
- 46:11Speaker 2: think the world's largest Spencer's is going to save the
- 46:15Speaker 2: town center, you got another thing coming. 9.53, The Dave

- 46:55Speaker 4: walked us through the process of building our church from
- 46:57Speaker 4: conceptualization to having a finished, fully functional building. When you build,
- 47:01Speaker 4: there are always challenges, and you need a partner who
- 47:03Speaker 4: will be present, take responsibility for the finished product, and
- 47:06Speaker 4: effectively manage time and money. The team at Jarrett Construction
- 47:08Speaker 4: was a godsend to us, and I'm excited to recommend
- 47:11Speaker 4: them to other churches, businesses, or anyone needing a construction
- 47:14Speaker 4: company they can trust.

- 49:18Speaker 2: sued right now over Eastgate Mall. in Cincinnati for allowing
- 49:21Speaker 2: it to deteriorate just like our once beloved town center. Text,
- 49:25Speaker 2: what's the realistic outcome for the town center? No way
- 49:28Speaker 2: a renovation for a mixed use will be less expensive
- 49:30Speaker 2: than the demolition than constructing a building that is purpose-built
- 49:34Speaker 2: for mixed use. I mean, I don't know. I don't know.
- 49:37Speaker 2: But I will say, That for these people that are
- 49:40Speaker 2: saying it doesn't matter who is who the mayor is
- 49:43Speaker 2: or the administration is to fill in name here. These
- 49:45Speaker 2: people that are saying, well, the city should do something
- 49:47Speaker 2: about this. OK, it's a privately owned facility. Now they
- 49:53Speaker 2: can sit down, they can talk, they can have negotiations,
- 49:56Speaker 2: they can do whatever I think they already have. But
- 49:58Speaker 2: for people saying, well, the city or the county should
- 50:00Speaker 2: go in and take it over. Well, you know, that's not.
- 50:05Speaker 1: The way it works.
- 50:07Speaker 2: That's not the way it works. The Dave Allen Show

- 50:14Speaker 2: says a texter, if they'll keep them all open while
- 50:16Speaker 2: the stores are closed or the entire facility being closed?
- 50:21Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know. The people that would know,
- 50:25Speaker 2: based on the reporting that came out last night, would
- 50:26Speaker 2: be the whole group, and they ain't saying it. Text
- 50:30Speaker 2: people live in Putnam County because they can't handle the
- 50:33Speaker 2: city life in Charleston. If they could, they'd be spending $ 2, 000
- 50:37Speaker 2: a month to live in South Hills. Well, everybody's got choices,
- 50:42Speaker 2: you know, and I'll leave it at that. Texas took
- 50:47Speaker 2: a cue from Camp Landing in Ashland. That was abandoned, deteriorated.
- 50:50Speaker 2: I'll look at it now. Yeah, that's what I was
- 50:52Speaker 2: trying to think of earlier, and I could not come

- 52:07Speaker 1: I don't know. Okay.
- 52:08Speaker 2: So I'm on the show? Nobody told me that.
- 52:11Speaker 6: Oh, whatever.
- 52:11Speaker 2: You were in the meeting. I was there.
