  [SPEAKER_00]: They allowed 85.6 yards per game on the ground in the regular season.

  [SPEAKER_00]: They allowed 3.9 yards per carry, pretty damn impressive.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And then you look at their playoff performance against the Buffalo Bills, a team that was an excellent rushing team.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Had James Cook, had Josh Allen.

  [SPEAKER_00]: They only gave up 79 yards.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I believe on three yards per carry.

  [SPEAKER_00]: They did give up a couple touchdowns of Josh Allen.

  [SPEAKER_00]: One of them was very unfortunate towards the end of the game, just a kind of a botched situation in my opinion, by the Jaguar's defense there.

  [SPEAKER_00]: But these things do tend to happen when you're playing against Josh Allen, unfortunately.

  [SPEAKER_00]: The Jag should have been able to do a better job overall.

  [SPEAKER_00]: on their past defense in that game and not turning the ball over on offense to control things a little bit better.

  [SPEAKER_00]: But the Jaguar's run defense is absolutely one of their superpowers.

  [SPEAKER_00]: James Gladstone always refers to that, like, what are your superpowers?

  [SPEAKER_00]: How can you really control football games and kind of take the will out of your opponent?

  [SPEAKER_00]: And I think the Jaguar's have several superpowers, we're gonna be talking about them a little bit this week as we kind of,

  [SPEAKER_00]: get away from rookie mini camp and get into the schedule later this week that's going to drop on May 14th the day before my birthday Thursday night so we'll definitely be here Thursday night talking about that schedule release we'll probably talk about it a little bit beforehand looking at the opponents and different things that could happen but for now again talking about that Jack Wars run defense number one run defense in the NFL went into Buffalo

  [SPEAKER_00]: He only averaged three yards per carry against the Jaguars in that game.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He had 1,600 rushing yards in the regular season, 12 touchdowns, had 5.2 yards per carry.

  [SPEAKER_00]: The Jaguars completely shut it down.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think a lot of people believed even though the Jaguars had the number one run defense that they would shut down James Cook in that way.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And the question is, why is there run defense so good?

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think it starts with Anthony Camponele, Tim Lucabe, all these guys on the Jaguar's defensive coaching staff.

  [SPEAKER_00]: It's a mindset.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Staying blocked is just something that Anthony Camponele reviles.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He hates it.
• 3:09
  [SPEAKER_00]: He wants his players to think like your opponent is robbing you, stealing your lunch money, attacking your family, whatever it may be, like you do not stay blocked.

  [SPEAKER_00]: that opponent.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Bottom line.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And so you have to have that mindset along with really precise coaching, like an understanding how teams are trying to attack your runfits, making sure that you are fundamentally sound with your gap assignments and all that stuff.

  [SPEAKER_00]: you don't have to do more than what's asked of you on a given play like you have to trust your teammates to do their job do your job play physical play with that edge that mindset that Campany Lake coaches and I think that that is the big big key to it all but beyond that.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Jaguars just have damn good run defenders and they've had damn good run defenders on their team for a while now when you look across Especially the front seven, but Even under the the back and I mean ties and camels not here anymore, but he was like a shining example of that mindset at corner Excellent run defender

  [SPEAKER_00]: But I think in this current iteration of the Jaguars within the Campanile as Defensive Coordinator, it all starts with Devon Hamilton.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He is so big, so physical and so strong.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Unbelievable anchor to hold up against double teams.

  [SPEAKER_00]: he can also penetrate and get in the backfield if the situation calls for it a little bit but just holding up and eating up space, the Von Hamilton does that as well if not better than anyone in the league and last year, last off season, I think people kind of laughed at Josh Heinz Allen and some of the other

  [SPEAKER_00]: Jaguar's players and coaches talking about Devon Hamilton being the best-known tackle in football.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Well, he showed it during the 2025 season as a run defender.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's not a huge pass-resurer or anything like that, but I will give him a lot of credit.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He won the Jaguar as the game against the Raiders out there in Vegas.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He definitely did with that deflection at the line of scrimmage, but Devon Hamilton is a run defender.

  [SPEAKER_00]: That's kind of where it all starts.

  [SPEAKER_00]: That's the full-crum.

  [SPEAKER_00]: The catalyst, whatever you want to call it,

  [SPEAKER_00]: and then you have your edge setters, Josh Hines Allen, and Trayvon Walker.

  [SPEAKER_00]: They're good pat, like I would say, Josh Hines Allen is like a borderline, great past rusher.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I would say Trayvon Walker is a good past rusher at this point and that's kind of like, you know, the TLDR.

  [SPEAKER_00]: They are both elite edge setters and elite run defenders and high effort players in that regard too.

  [SPEAKER_00]: These two guys, they are, you know, if it starts with Devon Hamilton, it's definitely Josh Hines Allen and Trayvon Walker next.

  [SPEAKER_00]: They're unbelievable run defenders at this level, both their strength and athleticism and focus and really discipline.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And that regard is huge for the Jaguar's run defense.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And then the second level, foe, Luke, and has always been a strong run defender.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's smart, he's athletic, he plays tough as hell.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Devon Lloyd has always been a good run defender.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Devon Lloyd exits, Ventral Miller enters.

  [SPEAKER_00]: It looks like Ventral Miller is probably the favorite to win the starting job right now.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I certainly have him as my favorite.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He has always been an extremely strong run defender as well.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So I think at the second level, you're not having any drop off there.

  [SPEAKER_00]: And then getting back to the front,

  [SPEAKER_00]: you have guys that can come in and help, right, that are good run defenders.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Matt Dickerson was a very good run defender.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Eric Armstead, when he is asked to just hold the line, he can do that at extremely high level.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Generally speaking, I think the jack was trying to get Eric Armstead attacking and getting into the backfield more, but when he's asked to just hold up, he does a good job there too.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Like his performance against the bills against the run was,

  [SPEAKER_00]: unbelievable stuff, like vintage, just great play, right?

  [SPEAKER_00]: So he can do it as well when he's asked to, but Matt Dickerson gets in there and does his job.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Danny Strigo as a third edge, really good run defender, right?
• 7:22
  [SPEAKER_00]: And then you also had an Albert Regis who's a really good run defender in the draft and the third round.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Wesley Williams, who is a really good run defender in the draft and the fourth round.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So I think that they took what they had upfront.

  [SPEAKER_00]: They improved it even and I don't think that the addition of a rook or ro-ro is going to improve the Jaguar's run defense, but he is someone you have to keep in mind in that regard too.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think he can play fundamentally sound.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's just not the biggest guy on the interior.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So all those guys do a good job against the run and then you get to the back end and you have a safety like Antonio Johnson who I mean I think that he dramatically improved the run defense when he became a starting safety for the Jaguars I think he helps out tremendously because he has great range really sound tackler Eric Murray is a sturdy solid good effort run defender as well and then

  [SPEAKER_00]: Lane would come in and do a good job and then you talk about the corners.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I mentioned Tyson Campbell no longer in Jacksonville did a great job as a run defender throughout his career.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He absolutely did, but Buster Brown does the same thing.

  [SPEAKER_00]: If you're running to his side, he's coming downhill.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's trying to hit you.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's trying to lay the wood and at the very least do a good job, you know, bringing his opponent to the ground.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think he's done that throughout his career.

  [SPEAKER_00]: something that you love about his game and part of the reason I think the jaggers are so keen on bringing him back.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He was a good run defender.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't miss a lot of tackles, right?

  [SPEAKER_00]: So

  [SPEAKER_00]: Buster Brown, I think Travis Hunter, is a good run defender.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He's not the strongest guy out there, but he knows how to slip blocks and play the run.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He sees it well.

  [SPEAKER_00]: He only missed one tackle last year, obviously didn't have a ton of tackles, right?

  [SPEAKER_00]: Only 14 total tackles, but a lot of those were on an island.

  [SPEAKER_00]: by himself having to get his opponent to the ground and he did a good job of that I don't think that he's in any way going to be some sort of downgrade as a corner in the run game at all.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So that's huge and then so how does it help you win the game if you're stopping the run?

  [SPEAKER_00]: I mean teams can't sustain offense if they can't run the ball.

  [SPEAKER_00]: It makes it very difficult to do that.

  [SPEAKER_00]: wasn't always up to snuff last year.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think it improved over the course of the season in a big way.

  [SPEAKER_00]: I think that skeleton key for the Jack Wars entire defense is Travis Hunter.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You get him out there, in-pass coverage.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You have buster around on the other side.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You have Jarian Jones.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You have Jordan Louis.

  [SPEAKER_00]: You're in a good spot.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Travis Hunters out there, you're stopping the run, and then third down, good luck, complete and passes on Travis Hunter, Buster Brown, Jarring Jones, et cetera, Jordan Lewis.

  [SPEAKER_00]: So I think that Jaguar's defense is in a really good spot.

  [SPEAKER_00]: They do need to show that that past defense, that past rush, all of it married together, is improved for them to really take the next step as like a defense that can shut down opponents in the playoffs.

  [SPEAKER_00]: good opponents in the playoffs, like I think they could have shut down some some of their potential playoff opponents in 2025, but I'm talking about the upper echelon of the NFL, and I think that run defense is where it all starts and where the jag wars will refuse to have any regression, but the past defense is very important too, and I think that they have the pieces there to really improve, but they've got to go show that they can do that, you know,

  [SPEAKER_00]: Namely, just getting Travis Hunter out there and having him kicks him but I'm excited to see this defense for sure in 2026.
