Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / 'The worst take' Joe slams Trump for rejecting AI concerns as a 'HOAX'
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: And I have an expression.
- 0:01Speaker 2: It's whoever wins, AI wins. That's how big it is.
- 0:04Speaker 2: It's bigger than the Internet. And whoever wins, AI wins.
- 0:08Speaker 2: And we can't let this kind of stuff happen. And
- 0:10Speaker 2: that includes very much includes data centers. There are communities
- 0:14Speaker 2: that were dying that have data centers right now. And
- 0:16Speaker 2: now they're wealthy communities.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Yeah, no, they're not wealthy communities. And yeah, what's he
- 0:22Speaker 1: talking about? We can't let happen. Like the end of humanity. Yeah,
- 0:27Speaker 1: I agree if that's what he's talking about. But I
- 0:29Speaker 1: don't think that's what he was talking about. I think
- 0:31Speaker 1: he's talking about any sort of second look at the
- 0:36Speaker 1: pacing of how quickly this technology is moving along, which is,
- 0:39Speaker 1: of course, the issue of our time. But you would
- 0:41Speaker 1: never know that idiots in Washington, D.C. are responding to
- 0:46Speaker 1: the crisis.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Of our time.
- 0:48Speaker 4: He actually crashed the taping of a podcast dismissing the
- 0:51Speaker 4: safety concerns about A.I., and criticisms of data centers. We're
- 0:56Speaker 4: going to dig into his support of two issues that
- 0:58Speaker 4: are unpopular with Americans and perhaps logic.
- 1:02Speaker 3: We'll see.
- 1:03Speaker 1: You know, Richard, obviously, this requires, actually, that we have
- 1:07Speaker 1: politicians in Washington, D.C., and yes, people in the industry
- 1:10Speaker 1: that can juggle two or three thoughts simultaneously in their
- 1:14Speaker 1: own mind.
- 1:15Speaker 3: It just requires thought.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:17Speaker 1: Innovation, cutting edge innovation that will change the world, that
- 1:21Speaker 1: will make us healthier, make us more productive, make us
- 1:25Speaker 1: stronger economically. Safety concerns that will stop the sort of
- 1:31Speaker 1: swarms from.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Going out and ending mankind. And yes. Everybody you talk
- 1:38Speaker 3: to that's actually.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Involved in this, it's honest, says, you know, we can't
- 1:43Speaker 1: let the genie out of the bottle five, 10 years
- 1:45Speaker 1: from now. I say five, 10 months from now, as
- 1:48Speaker 1: quickly as this is moving.
- 1:50Speaker 3: There could be real concerns, whether you're talking about.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Bio hazards, whether you're talking about completely shutting down our
- 1:57Speaker 1: financial sectors, whether you're talking about completely shutting down our
- 2:00Speaker 1: electrical grids, that could happen. That most likely will happen
- 2:04Speaker 1: if Washington, starting with the president of the United States,
- 2:07Speaker 1: doesn't get serious about this quickly.
- 2:08Speaker 3: And the third thing, of course, is China. But I
- 2:10Speaker 3: will say Hillary.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Clinton said something that that's been in the back of
- 2:13Speaker 1: my mind for weeks, which is if President Xi arrests
- 2:19Speaker 1: his top tech guy. And we don't hear from Jack
- 2:24Speaker 1: Ma for years because of old line tech.
- 2:31Speaker 3: I mean, do we expect she to go, oh. Let
- 2:35Speaker 3: a thousand flowers bloom.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Wherever this crazy, wacky AI thing goes, just let it
- 2:42Speaker 1: go there.
- 2:43Speaker 3: No, he's never going to do that.
- 2:45Speaker 1: He's going to be on top of it, squelching it
- 2:48Speaker 1: at every turn if he thinks it's going to challenge
- 2:51Speaker 1: his absolute power.
- 2:53Speaker 5: It is a threat to the surveillance state and to
- 2:55Speaker 5: basically one person, one party controlled in China. It's also
- 2:59Speaker 5: a threat to their economy. What you were saying about
- 3:01Speaker 5: the U.S.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Economy.
- 3:02Speaker 5: The ability of this to undermine the entire financial system.
- 3:09Speaker 5: We assume that we go online and we look at
- 3:11Speaker 5: our accounts and what was there when we went to
- 3:13Speaker 5: sleep will be there in the morning.
- 3:15Speaker 3: What happens the day that it's not?
- 3:16Speaker 5: And that day is not necessarily that far away. That
- 3:19Speaker 5: could affect China as well. China's not immune. There are
- 3:21Speaker 5: people who, shall we say, whose enthusiasm for Xi in
- 3:24Speaker 5: China is finite. But coming back to your basic point,
- 3:28Speaker 5: that's just one angle of it. We can't let this
- 3:30Speaker 5: conversation be dominated just by the fear of China and competition.
- 3:34Speaker 5: The domestic dimension, the gap, Joe, between how potentially perilous
- 3:39Speaker 5: this is and the lack of a serious response, that
- 3:42Speaker 5: gap is about as large and as bad as I've seen.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Well, I mean, the American people are so far ahead
- 3:47Speaker 1: of politicians in Washington.
- 3:48Speaker 3: They're so far ahead of Donald Trump. They're so far
- 3:51Speaker 3: ahead of a lot of Republican leaders.
- 3:54Speaker 1: And it's, again, it's Not only is it dangerous for
- 4:00Speaker 1: us on all of these fronts, the promise is extraordinary.
- 4:05Speaker 1: It just takes grownups to sit down and sort through
- 4:09Speaker 1: this instead of having absolutists.
- 4:12Speaker 3: From both sides. And that's exactly what we have. I
- 4:15Speaker 3: can say one other thing, too, just on a side note.
- 4:18Speaker 1: You know, it doesn't really matter if we're all extinct
- 4:20Speaker 1: in like 2029, what happens in.
- 4:22Speaker 3: The 2026 midterms. I really I will say it again.
- 4:27Speaker 1: If the Democratic Party had decided to launch in 2014,
- 4:33Speaker 1: like the the worst double agent in the history of
- 4:38Speaker 1: political history, they could not have drawn up anybody better
- 4:41Speaker 1: than Donald Trump, because for Donald Trump to take this
- 4:45Speaker 1: stand right now, when, as you said, and I can
- 4:48Speaker 1: tell you, everybody is.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Talking about this issue. And he's gone, what me? Worry?
- 4:55Speaker 3: Don't worry. Be happy. Don't worry. Don't worry, fella. It's
- 4:59Speaker 3: like Saddam Hussein in South Park. Don't worry, fella. Everything's
- 5:04Speaker 3: going to be OK. We're worried. We are worried.
- 5:08Speaker 1: And this is the worst take that he could possibly have,
- 5:13Speaker 1: not only for our safety, not only for, hopefully, the
- 5:17Speaker 1: continued excelling of this industry. but also for the Republicans'
- 5:25Speaker 1: fortunes a month and a half from now.
- 5:27Speaker 6: It is striking how out of step he is right now.
- 5:30Speaker 6: First one beat on China. Just yesterday, a report from
- 5:33Speaker 6: the New York Times that China's top spy chief warned
- 5:36Speaker 6: Xi Jinping about AI, saying it's a threat to Chinese
- 5:40Speaker 6: communist rule. That is not necessarily about the end of humanity,
- 5:44Speaker 6: but it could undermine their power because of things like
- 5:47Speaker 6: you know, fakes and the algorithms and so on and
- 5:50Speaker 6: the way they can mobilize protest and opposition to him.
- 5:53Speaker 3: So that's number one.
- 5:54Speaker 6: So this would seem to be an opportunity for Trump
- 5:56Speaker 6: and Xi to get together to talk about AI. And conveniently,
- 5:59Speaker 6: they're meeting next week. They're meeting next week for a
- 6:01Speaker 6: summit in Washington. But what we saw yesterday from President
- 6:04Speaker 6: Trump shows he has, at least right now, zero interest
- 6:07Speaker 6: in putting any regulations on this industry at all. I
- 6:11Speaker 6: wrote a piece yesterday, came out last night for The
- 6:13Speaker 6: Atlantic on this very topic that it is the topic
- 6:16Speaker 6: of conversation in recent days.
- 6:18Speaker 3: People want guidelines. Industry leaders want guidelines.
- 6:20Speaker 6: Trump, in a series of increasingly deranged true social posts,
- 6:24Speaker 6: I think by the last count, six or seven yesterday,
- 6:27Speaker 6: all full-throated defensive AI. He doesn't want to have any
- 6:31Speaker 6: slowdowns at all because he is concerned about China. But
- 6:34Speaker 6: more than that, I'm told he's concerned about what it
- 6:36Speaker 6: could do to the stock market, which, of course, is
- 6:38Speaker 6: his measure today. of the nation's economic health, and he
- 6:40Speaker 6: doesn't want the bubble to burst.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Well, again, the stupidity of all this is that, of course,
- 6:44Speaker 1: if you have reasonable regulations, that will actually help the
- 6:48Speaker 1: stock market go up. The stock market actually went up
- 6:52Speaker 1: when it looked like interest rates might go up. Because
- 6:57Speaker 1: you actually would stop runaway inflation. So this whole idea,
- 7:00Speaker 1: give them absolutely everything that they want. No regulations whatsoever.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I mean, that's a big difference from overregulating or the
- 7:07Speaker 1: stories that we heard out of the Biden White House.
- 7:09Speaker 1: There is, you know, middle ground somewhere there.
- 7:13Speaker 7: Hey, it's me, Rachel Maddow. If you like the story
- 7:16Speaker 7: you just watched, you should know about a new way
