- 3:09Speaker 1: the Players Fund Center phone line and visit with an
- 3:12Speaker 1: award winning captain and fly fishermen and fisher person extraordinary
- 3:19Speaker 1: host of the TV show The Sea Hunter on the
- 3:22Speaker 1: Outdoor Network. It is Rob Fordyce. Rob, good to talk
- 3:26Speaker 1: to you. How are you doing, buddy now, I'm doing fine.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I appreciate you coming on. I know it's been a
- 3:35Speaker 1: tough couple of days losing Flip. I wanted to give
- 3:39Speaker 1: you the chance to come on and talk about your friend.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I know you guys spent a lot of time in
- 3:44Speaker 1: the outdoors together. You may have spent as much time
- 3:48Speaker 1: deer hunting as fishing, did you.
- 3:51Speaker 8: Absolutely, you know, Flip kind of introduced me to the
- 3:57Speaker 8: hunting side of things, especially the deer hunting side of things.
- 4:01Speaker 8: And though we did meet in a fishing environment. And
- 4:04Speaker 8: I actually met Flip when I was eight years old.
- 4:07Speaker 8: He owned an outdoor store, and one thing led to another.
- 4:10Speaker 8: I was in there one day buying flight time material,
- 4:13Speaker 8: and I guess it's not every day there's an eight
- 4:15Speaker 8: year old kid, kid buying flight time material. And to
- 4:18Speaker 8: make a long story short, we became friends. And you know,
- 4:21Speaker 8: it's funny. There was an age difference there, but it
- 4:24Speaker 8: was never like a father figure.
- 4:26Speaker 6: You know.
- 4:26Speaker 8: Once yeah, once I got to be a young teenager,
- 4:30Speaker 8: he and I started doing a lot of things together,
- 4:32Speaker 8: polling around way deep in the back country the Everglades,
- 4:36Speaker 8: and we actually learned a lot of that country together.
- 4:39Speaker 8: And from that moment on, we were either polling flats
- 4:44Speaker 8: or walking in the hills of Texas, hunting deer, Georgia,
- 4:48Speaker 8: South Carolina, all over the map, and I was blessed
- 4:52Speaker 8: to know them.
- 4:52Speaker 9: Man.
- 4:52Speaker 8: He was he was known as a you know around
- 4:56Speaker 8: the world as being an incredible fly fisher. But but
- 5:00Speaker 8: Flip was an overall hell of an outdoorsman. You know,
- 5:04Speaker 8: I said just two people in the past that if
- 5:07Speaker 8: the Olympics had a sport called the Ultimate Outdoorsman, you know,
- 5:12Speaker 8: Flip would have not only been been the coach, but
- 5:14Speaker 8: he would have been the team leader and he would
- 5:15Speaker 8: have led us to gold.
- 5:17Speaker 1: You know, he was that guy, you know, as an
- 5:21Speaker 1: eight year old at Flip running a store. That was
- 5:25Speaker 1: that was a ways before the walker K chronicles, was
- 5:28Speaker 1: it not.
- 5:30Speaker 8: Yes, it was. I'll tell you how long ago it was.
- 5:32Speaker 8: Chip about a month after I met Flip, when I
- 5:35Speaker 8: was eight Sage. Sage came out with the first graphite
- 5:40Speaker 8: fly rod ever made.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Good God.
- 5:43Speaker 1: So, yeah, you're getting you're you're you're getting.
- 5:46Speaker 8: Old, Rob, I know, I know, don't remind me.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm reminded. But anyway, I'm reminded every day and
- 5:53Speaker 1: and and you know, I've seen this picture of you
- 5:57Speaker 1: at Flip. It's it's iconic. Honestly, when you were a
- 6:01Speaker 1: youngster like that, it's it's just it's, uh, I'm telling
- 6:06Speaker 1: you this. But it was just a special relationship, was
- 6:09Speaker 1: it not.
- 6:10Speaker 8: It was you know, and it's I've been very blessed
- 6:14Speaker 8: to have a lot of great people in my life
- 6:16Speaker 8: throughout the years and have a you know, a handful
- 6:18Speaker 8: of friends that I consider very close and tight. But
- 6:22Speaker 8: but the friendship I had with Flip was was like
- 6:26Speaker 8: no other person I've ever had. And I'm not sure
- 6:31Speaker 8: it wasn't and I don't mean this because it was me,
- 6:36Speaker 8: but I'm not sure it wasn't such a special relationship
- 6:40Speaker 8: that not many people haven't with anybody. I mean I
- 6:44Speaker 8: shared things with him that that I didn't share with
- 6:48Speaker 8: my dad, and I have more memorable experiences that I
- 6:52Speaker 8: didn't have with anybody else. And what was really interesting
- 6:55Speaker 8: about our relationship was, especially in the last twenty five
- 7:00Speaker 8: years or so, we could we could go hunting and
- 7:04Speaker 8: you know, leave a cabin in the middle of the
- 7:05Speaker 8: sum ranch in the middle of Texas and go off
- 7:08Speaker 8: and we're sitting in the woods, and we love to
- 7:11Speaker 8: sit in chairs in the brush, yeah, you know, instead
- 7:14Speaker 8: of putting in a big box, lind Yeah, And we
- 7:16Speaker 8: just like to kind of become part of the woods
- 7:18Speaker 8: and let the world come alive around us. As the
- 7:21Speaker 8: sun started rising. We could sit in places like that
- 7:25Speaker 8: or environments like that for hours and never say a
- 7:27Speaker 8: word and enjoy every minute we had together. And we
- 7:32Speaker 8: just a glance. I knew what he meant, he knew
- 7:35Speaker 8: what I meant, and it was just a very special relationship.
- 7:41Speaker 8: And I'm honored that I got the chance to know
- 7:44Speaker 8: the man he's going to be. I'll tell you, it's
- 7:46Speaker 8: been a tough couple of days, but I tell you,
- 7:49Speaker 8: he he reached so many people, not just through his show,
- 7:54Speaker 8: but through all the different ways that he reached out
- 7:57Speaker 8: to the world. And I think he introduced he made
- 8:01Speaker 8: more people get introduced to the outdoors than anybody else
- 8:05Speaker 8: I know.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Uh he he uh designed and built the Hell's Bay
- 8:09Speaker 1: boat skiff, did he not?
- 8:11Speaker 8: Yes? He did. Actually throughout the years, even before Hell's Bay,
- 8:15Speaker 8: he he kind of cultivated several flats boats, you know,
- 8:21Speaker 8: throughout the years, but Hell's Bay by far. Uh, he changed,
- 8:25Speaker 8: he changed the game in saltwater fishing with Hell's Bay.
- 8:30Speaker 8: You know, since since the creation of that, there's been
- 8:34Speaker 8: some other skiffs that have you know, come along, But
- 8:36Speaker 8: before the Hell's Bay Skiff, there was no boat that
- 8:39Speaker 8: was that light, that's quiet, that dry, Yeah, that did
- 8:42Speaker 8: all the things that that the boats do now. He
- 8:46Speaker 8: single handedly changed the game.
- 8:49Speaker 1: He his house got wiped out in the hurricane. I
- 8:52Speaker 1: think it's been I've read twenty three years at at
- 8:55Speaker 1: he moved out of your neighborhood twenty three years ago, right.
- 8:59Speaker 8: He did so. Her and Andrew hit us in Homestead
- 9:01Speaker 8: in nineteen ninety two. Yep, he took that opportunity. You know,
- 9:06Speaker 8: he saw how Miami and South Florida was growing, and
- 9:09Speaker 8: the keys was growing. It wasn't the way he remembered it,
- 9:12Speaker 8: you know, and he took that opportunity to move up
- 9:17Speaker 8: to the middle part of Florida, little town called Mems
- 9:20Speaker 8: and he found a lot that backed up to a
- 9:22Speaker 8: giant refuge. In his whole backyard was basically a wilderness playground.
- 9:27Speaker 8: And that's where he's been the last twenty some odd years.
- 9:31Speaker 1: You know, I spoke with you about this, and it's
- 9:35Speaker 1: been a while, Rob, but you were seriously at one time,
- 9:39Speaker 1: I believe, consider moving from from your home base in
- 9:44Speaker 1: South Florida. My guess is you you had some conversations
- 9:49Speaker 1: with Flip about that over time.
- 9:52Speaker 10: I did.
- 9:53Speaker 8: Yeah, I actually, uh, at one time, there was a
- 9:56Speaker 8: there was a period in my guiding career that after
- 9:59Speaker 8: tarp and season would kind of ends the end of
- 10:01Speaker 8: June here in the in the Florida.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Keys, yep.
- 10:04Speaker 8: I was going to South Padre Island, yep and and
- 10:06Speaker 8: spending three or four months down there every year. I
- 10:08Speaker 8: did that for about five years, and I fell in
- 10:10Speaker 8: love with the Laguna Madre and that that that kind
- 10:14Speaker 8: of fishing, and it's just like we had here at home.
- 10:16Speaker 8: It was just I'd never seen giant trout like that.
- 10:19Speaker 8: I loved that game. And when the weather was right,
- 10:22Speaker 8: there was good tarping fishing and the red fishing was
- 10:24Speaker 8: second to none. So what I really love most about Texas,
- 10:28Speaker 8: and I go to Texas every year to hunt and
- 10:29Speaker 8: do other things, are the people. You know, they're they're
- 10:33Speaker 8: they're they're just the best Americans. I've been fortunate to
- 10:38Speaker 8: travel all over the country and be in different states,
- 10:41Speaker 8: And if I had to pick another place to live
- 10:44Speaker 8: other than the Florida Keys, it was dark darnsherby Texas.
- 10:47Speaker 8: Not just because it's a lot of cool things to do,
- 10:50Speaker 8: but it's the people.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Uh So you obviously decided to stay, and I guess
- 10:56Speaker 1: I don't guess, but but the TV show played a
- 11:00Speaker 1: big role in that. Did it not?
- 11:02Speaker 8: It absolutely did. I think if I did not, we're
- 11:06Speaker 8: going into season eleven.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Good gosh, is that right?
- 11:09Speaker 8: I know, I know, I know it's crazy. But had
- 11:16Speaker 8: that not come to be and actually kind of taken
- 11:19Speaker 8: off like it did, uh, I probably would have made
- 11:22Speaker 8: that move. But that being said, a big part of
- 11:25Speaker 8: my show, you know, happens here in the Florida Keys,
- 11:28Speaker 8: and so I think we'll be here for now. My daughter,
- 11:32Speaker 8: my daughter actually has a show on the outdoor channel
- 11:35Speaker 8: called World called wild at Heart Doors and it's half hunting,
- 11:40Speaker 8: half fishing, and uh, we're going to be in Texas
- 11:43Speaker 8: a bunch this year shooting a bunch of cool white
- 11:44Speaker 8: tails stuff pretty soon.
- 11:46Speaker 1: That's that's very cool.
- 11:48Speaker 11: Uh.
- 11:48Speaker 1: One of my biggest outdoor regrets is I I met
- 11:52Speaker 1: you down there to to fish when you when you
- 11:56Speaker 1: were going down there, and one of the things that
- 11:58Speaker 1: you mentioned at the time is I think Flip is
- 12:02Speaker 1: going to come down And I'm sure he ended up
- 12:05Speaker 1: doing that several times. But and I said, I said, look,
- 12:09Speaker 1: I just want to be on the boat. I'm not
- 12:11Speaker 1: going to bother you. I'm not going to fish if
- 12:15Speaker 1: that happens. I want to be on the boat with
- 12:19Speaker 1: you guys just to watch. And it never came about.
- 12:24Speaker 1: It never got to do that. But I've always thought
- 12:26Speaker 1: about it. It's always been a regret.
- 12:30Speaker 8: Yes, I'll tell you what that flip was. Besides being
- 12:36Speaker 8: an amazing storyteller and because of a labyrinth of knowledge
- 12:41Speaker 8: and all the things he did through through life, just
- 12:44Speaker 8: listening to him talk about things, you'd pick up and
- 12:47Speaker 8: learn things. But he was just an iconic figure that
- 12:52Speaker 8: touched a lot of people, and all the way till
- 12:56Speaker 8: his last day. He was big upon getting use involved.
- 13:01Speaker 8: And I think I think by him and I'm meeting
- 13:06Speaker 8: when I was a young man, and he saw how
- 13:10Speaker 8: his influence and uh in the outdoors influenced my my career,
- 13:16Speaker 8: and and as I got older and and so forth,
- 13:20Speaker 8: I think he realized through our relationship how important that was.
- 13:24Speaker 8: Because one of the things that always stuck with me
- 13:27Speaker 8: that that he mentioned was, you know, the world is
- 13:30Speaker 8: growing and and the environmental impacts we're having on the
- 13:35Speaker 8: earth you know today are very impactful, and they're very heavy,
- 13:39Speaker 8: and as more and more people and populations grow, you know,
- 13:42Speaker 8: all those things are getting you know, they're feeling it,
- 13:46Speaker 8: they're feeling it. But how you know, if you if
- 13:50Speaker 8: you think about the way you grew up, Ship and
- 13:52Speaker 8: the way I grew up, and kids aren't aren't typically
- 13:56Speaker 8: growing up there no way we used to, you know,
- 14:02Speaker 8: after school we'd go play with the kids down the
- 14:05Speaker 8: street and we'd run off in the woods and play
- 14:07Speaker 8: in the Cowboys and Indians and better be home by dark,
- 14:10Speaker 8: yeah for dinner.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Yep.
- 14:11Speaker 8: And kids don't do that anymore. So my point of
- 14:14Speaker 8: saying that, and the point of Flip always mentioning it,
- 14:17Speaker 8: was how do you protect something if you don't know it?
- 14:22Speaker 8: So he was big on, you know, getting use involved
- 14:25Speaker 8: in the outdoors in a very intimate way, in an
- 14:29Speaker 8: in depth way, and really getting them involved in the
- 14:31Speaker 8: outdoors where they love it so they would protect it.
- 14:34Speaker 8: Because after you know, I mean, we're losing these icons in
- 14:38Speaker 8: the sport that have been the leaders and protecting and
- 14:43Speaker 8: having a voice, you know for the waterways and the
- 14:45Speaker 8: wilderness and the hunting and the fishing and so forth.
- 14:48Speaker 8: And I'm big in at myself, but I'm not gonna
- 14:51Speaker 8: be around forever either. So for all the listeners out there,
- 14:54Speaker 8: whether you have kids or not, I know, you know,
- 14:57Speaker 8: kids that want to be in the outdoors, get them
- 14:59Speaker 8: out there.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Well, I will say you learned, you know, from the best,
- 15:03Speaker 1: because I've watched you do the same thing over the years.
- 15:07Speaker 8: Absolutely, yes, sir.
- 15:11Speaker 1: I think Flip, without question, Rob is best known by
- 15:16Speaker 1: The Walkers K Chronicles. And I mentioned when I was
- 15:22Speaker 1: in the first hour and one of the guys here,
- 15:25Speaker 1: I was talking about Flip and he it was obvious
- 15:29Speaker 1: he didn't really know the name, and he's not a
- 15:32Speaker 1: big outdoors guy necessarily, But then I mentioned Walker's K
- 15:35Speaker 1: Chronicles and he shook his head. He goes, of course,
- 15:38Speaker 1: I mean that show, Well, it got me to the Bahamas. Rob,
- 15:44Speaker 1: you know, for the last twenty five years. I mean,
- 15:47Speaker 1: I think the Behamian tourist industry probably owes him about
- 15:51Speaker 1: half of what they've made the last forty years.
- 15:55Speaker 8: I would say the same thing for the Keys. Yes,
- 15:57Speaker 8: no doubt, because I meet so many people here that say, hey,
- 16:01Speaker 8: you know what got me coming here was watching the
- 16:03Speaker 8: Walkers Chronicles.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Yep.
- 16:05Speaker 8: And I'll tell you what was really incredible about that show.
- 16:08Speaker 8: And Flip had done shows before that and they never
- 16:13Speaker 8: took off for one reason or another. But what made
- 16:16Speaker 8: that show was it was Flip's vision for every episode.
- 16:21Speaker 8: You know, he had in his mind's eye how he
- 16:24Speaker 8: wanted that episode to prevail, and the guests that he had,
- 16:28Speaker 8: and the backstory involved. And he had the unique ability,
- 16:32Speaker 8: unlike most show hosts of any kind, Yes, to take
- 16:35Speaker 8: the viewer by the hand and take them on an
- 16:37Speaker 8: adventure and make them feel like they're there. Yeah, And
- 16:41Speaker 8: I think that's, you know, obviously what he was most
- 16:45Speaker 8: known for. But he raised the bar in television by
- 16:48Speaker 8: doing it the way he did it.
- 16:51Speaker 1: How much did you take for that, Rob when you
- 16:53Speaker 1: started doing the Sea Hunter?
- 16:56Speaker 8: Oh, one hundred percent. Between Flip and Jose with hebe
- 16:59Speaker 8: Jose Yes, also a dear friend of mine. Between those
- 17:03Speaker 8: two guys, they influenced me the most upon how I
- 17:08Speaker 8: shoot my show. In the field, I want my show
- 17:10Speaker 8: to have and I wanted nothing more than it to
- 17:14Speaker 8: be everything but just another fishing show. I wanted to
- 17:18Speaker 8: take viewers by the hand and take them on an
- 17:20Speaker 8: adventure like those two guys did. And knock on wood,
- 17:24Speaker 8: I think I've I've I've done pretty well doing that.
- 17:28Speaker 8: But without those guys that that vision would have never
- 17:31Speaker 8: been there.
- 17:33Speaker 1: You know, when when all of that outdoors TV show started,
- 17:38Speaker 1: and and not not every show, but it was always about,
- 17:41Speaker 1: you know, how many fish can you catch? How many
- 17:43Speaker 1: birds can you kill? And those of us who have
- 17:47Speaker 1: grown up, and it took me, I don't know about you, Robert,
- 17:52Speaker 1: it took me quite a while to determine that when
- 17:56Speaker 1: I went fishing or hunting, it was never about how
- 18:00Speaker 1: many fish I caught or how many birds I killed.
- 18:03Speaker 1: And unfortunately, as a young person, you still want to,
- 18:06Speaker 1: you know, you want to limit out every day and
- 18:09Speaker 1: you'll stay all day until you do right. But man,
- 18:13Speaker 1: it it took me a while to learn that.
- 18:16Speaker 8: Absolutely, and I think I think that's just growing, you know,
- 18:19Speaker 8: as an outdoorsman. You know, like you said, you know,
- 18:21Speaker 8: as you're when you're a youngster, you want to. You
- 18:23Speaker 8: want to you can't wait to kill your first deer,
- 18:25Speaker 8: and then you want to kill a big deer. And
- 18:28Speaker 8: then it becomes a point where you want to kill
- 18:30Speaker 8: a lot of deer, you know, with the bow or
- 18:32Speaker 8: what have you, or catch a lot of fish. And
- 18:35Speaker 8: but there becomes a point in in that that whole
- 18:39Speaker 8: journey that is, like you said, it's not about how
- 18:42Speaker 8: many you catch, It's not about how big or how
- 18:44Speaker 8: many or whatever. It's it's more about the experience and
- 18:48Speaker 8: who you're sharing it with.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Yeah, so I saw your picture again this year with
- 18:54Speaker 1: another big trophy. Uh, how is how was the season?
- 18:58Speaker 1: And and tell me about the big I know there's
- 19:03Speaker 1: several tournaments down there, but there's always a big one
- 19:06Speaker 1: and I believe you were one of the winners this
- 19:09Speaker 1: year again.
- 19:11Speaker 8: So we have three of the biggest fly fishing tournaments
- 19:15Speaker 8: in the world are held right here in Alamorada. They
- 19:18Speaker 8: have a sixty two year history. They're all fly fishing
- 19:21Speaker 8: for giant tarpin and each tournament has a little bit
- 19:24Speaker 8: different rules and so forth, but it's all about chasing
- 19:28Speaker 8: giant fish with light tippet and fly rods. And the
- 19:32Speaker 8: first tournament I fished was actually in nineteen eighty eight.
- 19:36Speaker 8: I won one in nineteen ninety and throughout, to make
- 19:40Speaker 8: a long story short, throughout the years, I've fished seventy
- 19:43Speaker 8: six of those events as a guide.
- 19:45Speaker 12: Wow.
- 19:46Speaker 8: And I've been fortunate to win eighteen of those and
- 19:50Speaker 8: sixty two times coming first, second, or third with a
- 19:53Speaker 8: podium finished. So that's been a pretty cool ride, you know,
- 19:56Speaker 8: over the last thirty five thirty six years, and this year.
- 20:01Speaker 8: We every year I get a little older, I get
- 20:03Speaker 8: it a little slower, I get it, you know, and
- 20:05Speaker 8: there's there's a bunch of great young anglers and guys
- 20:08Speaker 8: coming along and I'm still trying to defend them off.
- 20:12Speaker 8: And this year, luckily we won a big tournament. Actually
- 20:16Speaker 8: I won one with the founder of Yettie, Ryan Steeters.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Nice.
- 20:20Speaker 8: We won the first tournament of the year, the Golden Fly,
- 20:23Speaker 8: and the second tournament we came in fourth. And then
- 20:27Speaker 8: the third tournament, I was fishing another angler, we came
- 20:30Speaker 8: in second. It's what are considered our super Bowl, it's
- 20:33Speaker 8: called the Gold Cup.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Yes, and.
- 20:37Speaker 8: We came in second, but we did manage to catch
- 20:40Speaker 8: a fish that that strapped out at one hundred and
- 20:42Speaker 8: seventy six, which over the sixty two year history of
- 20:47Speaker 8: the tournaments was the biggest one ever caught.
- 20:49Speaker 1: No way, is that right?
- 20:52Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 20:53Speaker 13: Wow?
- 20:53Speaker 1: Congratulations, thank you? How much larger was that than there
- 21:01Speaker 1: largest fish that you had brought?
- 21:04Speaker 8: So the biggest fish ever inter in the tournament before
- 21:08Speaker 8: that was a one fifty nine And the same week
- 21:14Speaker 8: this week this year, as we caught the one seventy six,
- 21:17Speaker 8: that guy caught a one sixty one So I don't
- 21:20Speaker 8: know if far trpord are getting bigger because we're releasing
- 21:22Speaker 8: them and not killing them anymore, Yeah, or we're just
- 21:24Speaker 8: getting better at it. Yeah, one of the two.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Probably a little of both.
- 21:29Speaker 10: I think it is a.
- 21:29Speaker 8: Little of both. But I'll tell you, over all the
- 21:32Speaker 8: years of doing tournaments and catching fish and doing things,
- 21:37Speaker 8: you know, we grabbed these fish by the lower jaw
- 21:39Speaker 8: when we get them up by the boat so we
- 21:41Speaker 8: can get a good picture and measure them and so forth,
- 21:43Speaker 8: And it's always an adrenaline rush, and you get excited
- 21:46Speaker 8: and you catch one, and then it's immediately you try
- 21:49Speaker 8: to you know, revive them and get rid of them
- 21:51Speaker 8: and go back to fishing and catch another one. After
- 21:54Speaker 8: I grabbed that fish and went to tie a new
- 21:56Speaker 8: leader on, I was shaking so hard a leader on it.
- 22:01Speaker 8: It's pretty cool that that the sport still does that
- 22:03Speaker 8: to me after all these years.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Well, if it does that, you'll have to quit.
- 22:07Speaker 8: I agree. I agree.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Uh, And you've you've suffered a few injuries over the
- 22:12Speaker 1: years trying to do that as well.
- 22:13Speaker 8: I know that that I have. Unfortunately, Uh, you know,
- 22:17Speaker 8: I think anything you do one hundred percent, one hundred
- 22:20Speaker 8: percent of the time, there's gonna be uh sacrifices and
- 22:24Speaker 8: you're gonna pay your dues. You know, a lot of
- 22:26Speaker 8: good things are going to happen, but you're probably gonna
- 22:28Speaker 8: pay your dues. With some injuries and so forth as well,
- 22:30Speaker 8: I've had twenty three surgeries, nine shoulders, final fusion, knee ankles,
- 22:37Speaker 8: dislocated thumbs from grabbing tarping. You know different this is.
- 22:40Speaker 1: This is fishing.
- 22:41Speaker 8: It's it's not football, I know, but if you look
- 22:45Speaker 8: at the size of these fish and how they behave
- 22:48Speaker 8: this year, I actually detached my left bictep in the
- 22:51Speaker 8: tournament I won with Ryan, the first tournament of the year,
- 22:54Speaker 8: grabbing a fish. It turned out to be one hundred
- 22:58Speaker 8: and fifty pounds fish. We had him on about ten
- 23:01Speaker 8: or fifteen minutes on a ten weight fly rod sixteen
- 23:03Speaker 8: pound tippet. Fish made a big run and a jump
- 23:06Speaker 8: and he kind of stunned him a little bit. So
- 23:08Speaker 8: I I motored after the fish pretty quick, and Ryan
- 23:11Speaker 8: got him to me in less than ten minutes, and
- 23:13Speaker 8: I grabbed the fish and then he decided to wake up.
- 23:16Speaker 8: And while I'm holding this fish by the lower jaw,
- 23:18Speaker 8: he try he tried to jump seven times and on
- 23:20Speaker 8: the on the third jump, we both heard the pop.
- 23:24Speaker 8: You know, my bus step detached from from my shoulder
- 23:27Speaker 8: and uh, but I managed to luckily hold onto the
- 23:30Speaker 8: fish and we got the fish went in the tournament.
- 23:32Speaker 8: But you know, another uh, another battle wound to market.
- 23:39Speaker 1: It's a good thing you're not competitive, you know.
- 23:44Speaker 8: Well, you know, as a younger man, I played a
- 23:46Speaker 8: lot of sports and my dad was super competitive and
- 23:49Speaker 8: he taught me to be super competitive, and I think
- 23:51Speaker 8: that was that's been a big help, you know, throughout
- 23:55Speaker 8: the years in fishing tournaments, because every day I tarpined,
- 24:00Speaker 8: I consider it kind of practice, you know, for the
- 24:02Speaker 8: for when the tournaments do come. So when they do come,
- 24:05Speaker 8: it's just another day on the water. And I think
- 24:08Speaker 8: a lot of guys go out there and just have
- 24:10Speaker 8: fun on a lot of days, and when the tournament comes,
- 24:12Speaker 8: they turn the juice on. I think, you've got to
- 24:14Speaker 8: practice like you play. And I would have never have
- 24:17Speaker 8: had that mentality without my dad pushing me when I
- 24:19Speaker 8: was a youngster.
- 24:20Speaker 1: When do you tape? Tape the show? Are you doing
- 24:23Speaker 1: that now? For next year?
- 24:25Speaker 8: We are actually next week we start We're going to
- 24:28Speaker 8: film the first episode, and then uh, a couple of
- 24:32Speaker 8: weeks later, my daughter and I are going to Montana
- 24:34Speaker 8: to film bow Hunt for Out, and we're gonna go
- 24:39Speaker 8: to go come back to the Keys and film for
- 24:42Speaker 8: about the first three weeks of October, and then turn
- 24:44Speaker 8: around and go right back to Texas and start filming
- 24:46Speaker 8: some white tail hunt. So hard, a bunch of exciting
- 24:49Speaker 8: stuff coming.
- 24:50Speaker 1: It's a hard job and somebody's got.
- 24:52Speaker 8: To do it well, you know, uh, believe it or not.
- 24:57Speaker 8: Taking people for this, thank you for a living, It's
- 25:00Speaker 8: not as easy.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Oh no, no, no, no, I was not suggesting that.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Trust me. You've had people on your boat like me,
- 25:08Speaker 1: so I know how difficult it is.
- 25:11Speaker 8: Man, you and your wife were a joy to have
- 25:13Speaker 8: on the boat, and I always look forward to those
- 25:15Speaker 8: days when we get a chance to do it.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I can't thank you enough. I really appreciate it.
- 25:19Speaker 13: Uh.
- 25:21Speaker 1: I know that you've lost a really good buddy. I
- 25:23Speaker 1: know how painful that is, unfortunately from personal experience, and
- 25:28Speaker 1: I really appreciate you spending time with us, Rob.
- 25:31Speaker 8: I appreciate you giving me a chance to talk about it,
- 25:34Speaker 8: and it's kind of a healing thing for me. We're
- 25:37Speaker 8: all going to miss that guy. And uh, we just
- 25:40Speaker 8: got to keep carrying on the traditions that he instilled
- 25:42Speaker 8: in us matter pushing forward.
- 25:44Speaker 1: I hope I can see you down there in the spring.

- 26:04Speaker 1: half of that and then they replay them, so you know,

- 38:13Speaker 1: Okay and we are, conservationists and part of conservation is,
- 38:22Speaker 1: hunting whether you like it or. NOT i do not
- 38:26Speaker 1: condone people doing stuff like, this taping the wool to
- 38:33Speaker 1: the front of the snowmobile and dragging into a bar
- 38:36Speaker 1: so he can show all his buddies when it's still.
- 38:39Speaker 1: Alive now that that doesn't. Hunt AND i don't think
