- 0:41All right, thanks for joining us here on the podcast.
- 0:43I am your host, Mike Cunningham and I'm super psyched, man.
- 0:46I just love meeting new people and you know as an old you coach
- 0:49myself, I love Juco coaches. So help me welcome the wise, the
- 0:53wonderful from Fort Scott Community College, mr.
- 0:55Philip Frederick Philip, how are you sir?
- 0:57I'm good. I'm good.
- 0:58Thanks for having me, man. I'm stoked.
- 1:00I'm very happy actually, if you're watching us on YouTube,
- 1:03you know, your style, you have like a signature style and it's
- 1:06that hat man. And so I was really hopeful as
- 1:09like, I hope he wears that hat because I I love, I love that
- 1:11stuff. That I've been like your style
- 1:12for like ever. Like it's a kid lately.
- 1:15Yes, sir, the must out lately. Yes, sir.
- 1:16I love it. You're so so nice calling me
- 1:19sir. I'm a dirty Jew co-coach like
- 1:23you, man. I was in the Ocean County.
- 1:24So, yeah, so will we can cut that sir stuff, man.
- 1:29We're all good. Hey, super super excited to have
- 1:32you here. You know, one of my favorite
- 1:33ways for people to get on the podcast.
- 1:35There's a lot of different ways, we kind of schedule our guests,
- 1:38but about a year ago and that should ring alarm I'm Bells.
- 1:41If you thinking about nominating, someone it takes
- 1:43over a year to count. I guess we only get 50 20 year,
- 1:47guys, you actually nominated by Mark Emerson, I think he's over
- 1:50at Butler Community College. Yeah, your assistant Jet and I'm
- 1:54going to jump ahead. I know you're listening, I'm
- 1:56going to screw this up. Forgive me, Mullen eras.
- 1:59I think I nailed it. Yeah, he's a pretty good good.
- 2:02Oh, wait, he's just a pretty good.
- 2:04He's being nice, but it's so cool when people think so,
- 2:07highly of others, that they would nominate him for the show.
- 2:10And that the show has It means something that to be nominated
- 2:12for. So that's got to feel pretty
- 2:14good, right. I mean like some people.
- 2:17Yes, I guess I do a little something.
- 2:18Right, I guess, you know? Yeah, Jeff heads like well he's
- 2:20my head coach. So pay the bill right, right?
- 2:24Right. What's your relationship with
- 2:26Mark? Why would he kill her first?
- 2:28When I start the program? He's my first assistant I have
- 2:31here and so very cool. Yeah.
- 2:34So he started with me so I like that because he has nothing to
- 2:37gain from this and Jeff are you know I'm kidding when you know
- 2:39I'm playing up the You have something gained to nominate
- 2:42him, but no, that's really cool man.
- 2:44That says a lot about you. I'm excited to kind of dig into
- 2:46that and see why, why are you nominated, well, why didn't your
- 2:49mama? Teach you?
- 2:50So so Phillip. Let's let's get our way back
- 2:53machine here man. Where does track start for you
- 2:56man? Where does what are you kind of
- 2:57start getting into track and field?
- 2:59It was I was act as a kid. I used to act out, you know, I
- 3:02need something to do as a kid. I didn't have a mom and dad in
- 3:05my life, so I was always acting out trying to find tension and I
- 3:09found it. I was actually pretty fast.
- 3:10So filled day in fourth grade, I did field day and I was beating
- 3:13everybody. And so they actually kicked me
- 3:15out a field day because I was hurting the other by
- 3:16self-esteem. I didn't know that was a thing.
- 3:19But yes. And so while became fans and I
- 3:22realize, that's pretty good. And now that's kind of funny
- 3:26actually because we talked about today and I know you're not that
- 3:29old. But we talk about today's kids
- 3:31and how, you know, fragile and all that kind of stuff.
- 3:34But here's back when you were a kid and it was the parents that
- 3:36were fragile, not the kind of the kids, get their quote
- 3:39unquote feeling sir, because the parents ever, Like get him out
- 3:41of here. He certain can.
- 3:42Yeah, it's interesting that you know maybe all this stuff we
- 3:45talked about kids. Actually maybe started car back
- 3:48that. Yeah.
- 3:49I love when people complain about today's kids because I'd
- 3:51like, you know who raised him? Right mr.
- 3:53Parents. Exactly.
- 3:54Like you're just complaining about yourself.
- 3:56Basically that. So yeah.
- 3:57Where are you growing up? Where were you?
- 4:01Yeah, in high school, Michael Murphy was my high school coach
- 4:07and my stuff in my actually Junior High coach.
- 4:09He followed me. And get enough.
- 4:12Yeah. Well you must not been acting
- 4:13out that bad then to someone's calling, that's a good
- 4:17attention. So I can subtract because I
- 4:20don't want to be forgotten. That was my main thing.
- 4:22So my any basic adopting, my grandma first and then I'll
- 4:26adopt me. So I don't be forgotten again.
- 4:28I was like my mom and dad didn't want me at the beginning, so
- 4:30make sure nobody forgets my name.
- 4:31So I started running track and everywhere I went I wanted to
- 4:34break records so it was a that's what I was.
- 4:35That's what motivated for really the show you buy that.
- 4:38I can be somebody who was that in.
- 4:41I mean, we're talking about, you know, pretty sensitive topic
- 4:43here, you know family? Yeah, yeah.
- 4:44I grew up no dad as well, and that's between Mom and homes and
- 4:47all that kind of stuff. But, you know, that that
- 4:51sentiment of like, I don't want to be forgotten, was that.
- 4:53It's like when you talk about fourth grade field day was it
- 4:57right off the bat, fourth grade, or was it like more like high
- 5:00school maybe when you started getting some attention like from
- 5:02maybe colleges or breaking records Etc, high school and in
- 5:05college less talking, more attention and started paying
- 5:07pretty good at it. And so what events are you
- 5:10special? Is it in high school?
- 5:12I was actually at when a runner in high school my clothes didn't
- 5:14let me do the hundred. He said I was, I was out of 24
- 5:17guy and I was too tall for 100. That's what he said at the time.
- 5:20This is, this is pre bolt, I assume then.
- 5:22Yes, people actually. So I would but not it's one and
- 5:27a high school because in Texas, you need to do three events.
- 5:30And so I was based on the 4014 by 2 and then 200 meters.
- 5:33Even relays. I didn't know that.
- 5:35Yeah, yes. We let's count.
- 5:36So yeah, we had Shelton Irvin on the podcast over down from
- 5:42Summer Creek, High School in Houston, he was the USAF.
- 5:44See a boy as National coach of the year, he kind of laid out
- 5:48the Texas high school. So I was like how to qualify and
- 5:50stuff. I didn't know that three events
- 5:53and that includes relays because I know we double points in Texas
- 5:56for the Relay. So I thought maybe those were
- 5:58like, like three events and then you can also do relays.
- 6:00But it's three including relays green include relay.
- 6:03So I think most kids High School have any open events because
- 6:06they're worried about the relays in Texas, so that actually hurts
- 6:08of a recruiting sometimes. Well, that's interesting
- 6:11because, you know, Twitter were, you know, I basically live,
- 6:13right. There's a lot of talk, you know,
- 6:16kind of snarky talk a little bit to be real Frank.
- 6:18I mean, I kind of get it as a former college coach.
- 6:20I kind of understand it, there's little bit to me, sometimes a
- 6:22bit, too much snarkiness with it, but they talk about like,
- 6:25you know, I don't want to, I don't want to see your relay
- 6:27splits recruit, you know, it doesn't mean what's your open.
- 6:29It's like, well, some maybe don't get the opportunity to run
- 6:32over, you didn't get it. Interesting.
- 6:34Okay, so you're running the to and the relays.
- 6:37Where do you want be talk to me about your high school coach?
- 6:40What kind of good coach Pat coach?
- 6:42If he's mad because he was most mostly like a father figure to
- 6:47me so that I have my dad, so he was more of a mentor.
- 6:49A father figure to me, wasn't real.
- 6:51He was - he was my sprinkled because my head coach, like I
- 6:53said, my commercials, my head coach, so he was always there
- 6:55for me. No matter what a great guy, he
- 6:58has hard to go. I sprinkle just coach Fleming,
- 7:02he was pretty good, it's fun. Jamel Fleming, he wants.
- 7:04The NFL played for the Cardinals, little plug for him,
- 7:07and I'm already team actually went to State.
- 7:09And so, it was pretty cool. I ran 2117 in high school, so, I
- 7:13wouldn't wasn't that bad. And then if someone track Iran
- 7:152104, so I was pretty pretty decent.
- 7:18Wow. You know, it's actually a
- 7:19little-known secret. I actually ran 2100 for once,
- 7:23huh? Yeah, it was in the hundred
- 7:25those, I'm not sure what that for weights, but I didn't dig
- 7:28it. You can't take it away from me.
- 7:30Then that actually probably was my 110-meter hurdler.
- 7:32PR We're probably what that's like, you know, I always do that
- 7:35joke about the, you know, Iran wants, and it's always the event
- 7:38lower, but I really do. That's how bad I was in the
- 7:40hurdles in high school. I bet that was my PR.
- 7:43I've actually probably pretty proud of that was my PR because
- 7:46that's pretty, pretty trashed. So what are you going to track
- 7:50athlete? Are you in high school?
- 7:52And what I mean by that is, you know, we talked about, we kind
- 7:54of put these big blankets that, you know, kids don't know, the
- 7:57track athletes that are out there.
- 7:58They don't study the history and all that kind of stuff where you
- 8:01kind of a guy who knew what was going on in the track.
- 8:03Or were you kind of centered in, on your track world?
- 8:07I'm a geek. I'm a nerd for track.
- 8:09So I knew everything about track.
- 8:10I'm a person that Google's research is all my competition.
- 8:14The history, I'm big, Michael Johnson fan, so I was in Michael
- 8:17Johnson knows my idol mom. If you look at my college
- 8:20pictures in my photos, you see me with the ghost fights and I'm
- 8:23holding them up and I won. So it was Ill.
- 8:24He was my he was the guy. He used to go to me, he'll
- 8:27always be the go. I never thought about number
- 8:29312. M record, 22 1932 but I mean
- 8:31obviously Usain Bolt did it but um He was, he's from Dallas as
- 8:34well. So same are y'all from.
- 8:36And he was the guy, that's awesome.
- 8:38So, what year, what's your senior year in high school?
- 8:40What year is that 2006, okay? Because you're talking about
- 8:44Google and I was like, okay well that's got to be in the 2000s.
- 8:48But MJ was your Your Heroes? Give me that's 94 or 96 ish.
- 8:54But so, yeah, you're a nerd on in this regards to like the
- 8:56history. You knew who he was.
- 8:58Yes. And so in the same time, the
- 9:00Dragon Warrior was basically, I think he was in college at the
- 9:02time who were from the same city.
- 9:04He was also my mom's on the game, but ours is again, waiting
- 9:06the school year when he was in school, so I show you how old
- 9:08John Warner. Is he hears this?
- 9:09He knows about, you know, I know Jerry pretty well.
- 9:13Now that's shots right there, man.
- 9:15He's gonna, he's gonna nominate himself to get on here, just to
- 9:18rebut that he was killing it. And I was like when he was a
- 9:25senior in high school, so I know he was as well and I want to
- 9:28break our his records, as well. I thought that was my goal then.
- 9:31So, I always look up to people like that and I won't be like,
- 9:33Try to beat him. How'd that work out for you?
- 9:36Look at all right you know he's kind of a Olympian so he not
- 9:39even get there. He deserves those records.
- 9:43Yeah, he's the guy, he's a guy. So what were you thinking for
- 9:46college in regards to studying and a career where we're at in
- 9:51your house, in high school? What were you thinking for the
- 9:54next step there? So I'm a die-hard longhorn fan
- 9:56so I think I'm going to text you.
- 9:57That's what I thought and I want to be an architect.
- 10:01Some reason I want to be an architect, I don't know why but
- 10:03But I was bigger now and math. I can do you.
- 10:05Do math a lot to do that. So that they could architect but
- 10:09not so big and math. Yeah.
- 10:11Yeah. And so yeah, but I realized that
- 10:17some kids do relies on them as freshman and sophomore years.
- 10:19You actually take School seriously and so I didn't take
- 10:22it that serious. My coach told me from day one,
- 10:25you got his school seriously, but me being a superstar as a
- 10:27freshman on the varsity, as a freshman, as a freshman, in high
- 10:30school in Texas, to make it that far, you have an ego This
- 10:34printer you have evil anyways but I was in when I was cocky
- 10:36kids that always been fast my whole life and so working hard
- 10:39and doing stuff came natural to me.
- 10:41So I have to work hard basically and everything natural.
- 10:44So I actually played around my first two years in College High
- 10:47School. It s same thing in practice, I
- 10:49played around and I didn't really understand what I had in
- 10:52to, you know, my senior year and then those two like yeah, that's
- 10:56interesting, you know, at our age we have perspective, right?
- 10:59We can look behind and see the mistakes we've made as a frosh
- 11:02off and the ice. School and even in practice,
- 11:04it's like man if I would have just taken it 10% more serious.
- 11:08Where could it have taken me? Interesting.
- 11:10So you your long die-hard Longhorn fan half the people
- 11:15listening are yelling at you right now for that fact alone.
- 11:18So where did you end up? You know with all the mistakes
- 11:21and stuff through high school, where did you end up going for
- 11:23school? So as soon as a couple of
- 11:25offers, no Texas TCU but couldn't get in.
- 11:29I pulled my hamstring my senior to, as well.
- 11:30So I heard my scholarships so actually it Like obvious that
- 11:34the other some attract I was actually had nowhere to go
- 11:36really know where to go, and I'm going to fast kids.
- 11:38Instead of Texas, not just head to the nation because I got top
- 11:418 in the National AAU Nationals in.
- 11:44So I'm just gonna home with nowhere to go and school called
- 11:47me called Allen County Community College.
- 11:48And I'm thinking coach The Grotto, if you know him, this de
- 11:51Grado, he coached here, he called me, see what you're doing
- 11:53right now. I said, sitting on my bed, you
- 11:56said he want to come to college. I said, I guess you want to
- 11:58major in college. I was like, what did you do in
- 12:00college? You know who I am.
- 12:02I'm feeling better again. That's why I told him.
- 12:04I was like, I don't even know who you are and he said, well,
- 12:08it's come on, Augie scholarship. Come on, down next week, I was
- 12:10heading down that I will the Kansas and on 4th, when I Madre,
- 12:14drop me off and I sit there and cried on the bed.
- 12:16I was like, I'm a D1 athlete. I'm a D1 athlete.
- 12:19And little did I know it was the best decision of my life.
- 12:21Wow, that's super interest. I love that.
- 12:24You went to a Juco and you coach it.
- 12:26Like you have that kind of like as your recruiting.
- 12:28You can draw on that experience of, you know, a kid from the
- 12:31Dallas area that goes. Iola Kansas Chanute can't.
- 12:35I mean, these are the middle of nowhere.
- 12:37Great, Ben Kami. These literally our small towns
- 12:40and Kansas and you kind of you look around, you're like, what
- 12:44am I doing here? But I was like, this is crazy.
- 12:47I cry. Let me do it for the first week.
- 12:48I just caught him a bit like I'm not supposed to be here but like
- 12:51I said, I told you. It's best decision of my life.
- 12:53It's the best is what makes you say that.
- 12:56I had to grow up as a person as an athlete, as a, as a as a man,
- 13:00as that student had to grow up. So dream College, helped me grow
- 13:03up. You can't depend on anybody in
- 13:05college, is basically you and coaches in the trenches.
- 13:08And so I had to think I had a have a legal sometimes.
- 13:12I like my call at home for help. I'm gonna figure it out myself,
- 13:15so I never call home for help. I just figured it out and it
- 13:17made me grow up as a person. But what did you think?
- 13:19One of the bigger transitions from high school to Junior
- 13:24College, at least the junior college that I'm familiar with
- 13:26the Kansas Jayhawks system and maybe some of the other ones as
- 13:30well. Not real familiar with the
- 13:31California system, but But you're in a really small town
- 13:36that there is nothing going on. Yeah.
- 13:39In that, in that college, and its athletes specifically, if
- 13:42you have a football team in basketball etcetera, but that
- 13:45everybody knows who you are. You are the outsider because you
- 13:49didn't grow up in that little town of Kansas, what like, how
- 13:55did you adjust? Because you talked about, you
- 13:57know, being on your own, in regards to family.
- 13:59But, you know, you had coaches and athletes, like, you have
- 14:01kind of two decisions to make their you can You can still go
- 14:04there and screw around and flunk out and home right or you can
- 14:07say, okay, well this is a second chance for me.
- 14:10Let's buckle down athletically and academically.
- 14:13How did you come to that? Buckle down decision?
- 14:17Getting my butt kicked. My first meet, that's what
- 14:19helped me buckle down again. I'll still have this Eagle, like
- 14:21I'm feeling rhetoric. I'ma show you, I can come in
- 14:23college will be anybody. I want to be.
- 14:25So my first semester I still played around.
- 14:27I'm still afraid. I'm so Rick.
- 14:28I'm so freshman. So I played it on my first
- 14:30semester, got to the first meat and I got my butt whooped from.
- 14:33Hey, I I would say 60 meter and a 717.
- 14:36My first reading the 60 and I'm thinking myself, what just
- 14:39happened, I'm feeling better, and it didn't matter that
- 14:42everybody's good there and I was like, let me try this working
- 14:44hard thing. Let me try to focus and lock in
- 14:47and working hard and listen to my coaches and the rest of his.
- 14:51And what were you studying at that time or was it just gen Ed,
- 14:54just don't get it right there. I want to study.
- 14:55And then after I got there, I understand Communications.
- 14:58So, so me. I like to die challenges.
- 15:00So my biggest fear is communication.
- 15:03Talk in front of crowds. So I'm actually majored in
- 15:05communication because I want to do a face my fears.
- 15:07That's kind of guy I am you know.
- 15:09Math is my fear in sound like it, I don't know, feels your
- 15:12fear, but maybe not so good. Like I would be you didn't want
- 15:14to face that fear. You're like, I'll go find a
- 15:16different one find different for yes sir, that's a smart
- 15:19decision. So how did it go?
- 15:24Those two years. I Tsum you spent two years.
- 15:26That's pretty traditional. Two years there at Allen house
- 15:29was astir. When Alan I transferred over to
- 15:31the Osho? Oh you When transporting your
- 15:35show where I have all the records there as well, have
- 15:37Allen County and in Neosho, Mister bottle left so I'm trying
- 15:43to coaches and stuff you know, that kind of hurt my feelings as
- 15:46the former head coach in the O show.
- 15:48You said, I've got all the school records their medium but
- 15:51I don't have any anymore as what you're telling me.
- 15:54Okay. All right.
- 15:54I got it. That's a lot of shots fired in
- 15:57this episode and we're like 16 minutes in here.
- 15:59Holy cow. How did you like she knew, man?
- 16:02Like I didn't realize. You were lived in shoe that's,
- 16:04you know, I'd spent my one-year service there.
- 16:08Yeah, it was, it was actually pretty cool.
- 16:09I don't I don't know a lot so I say to my dorm and did, you
- 16:12know, do what to do? But it's a nice town.
- 16:15I got my degree there and everything else is history.
- 16:17So it's a good town. Good people.
- 16:19The teachers the administration. It was nice.
- 16:22Did they have the track when you were there?
- 16:24We got the high school track. Yeah, that's where we went to
- 16:27the high school. They got their own track or
- 16:29Community track, right after you.
- 16:32So what hasn't been all that? Long for that.
- 16:35Yeah, but we used to go this rundown.
- 16:37High school track. Not good, man, and cold.
- 16:42Yeah. Did you get it?
- 16:43So you were on the track team, did you?
- 16:45You have you practiced in the basketball gym?
- 16:47Did you hand out of there with it?
- 16:49With little strip of trip attract?
- 16:52Yeah, we did that. Because a lot of black work up
- 16:53there. Did you have any, did you have
- 16:55the midnight, time slot or the 6 a.m. time slot?
- 16:57Because baseball yeah, baseball gets the, the Cherry spot, it
- 17:01gets whatever he wants, you know, he's been there.
- 17:03Forever and Coach. That's so cool, man.
- 17:07I love that. The little common connection
- 17:09there. She knew Kansas.
- 17:10There ain't many people that have that connection, so you end
- 17:15up getting your degree from, you know, show the Panthers baby,
- 17:18love it. And what.
- 17:20So what are you what are you thinking?
- 17:22Not only where to go where to transfer to for your four year
- 17:25but also continuing on with your communications degree.
- 17:29So yes, I'm going to click continue with my communication
- 17:32degree. I didn't broadcast journalism.
- 17:34So I got into broadcasting with my broadcast journalism.
- 17:37Major, I had offers from U of H, Texas Tech, Nebraska, University
- 17:42of Washington. And again, like I said, I was
- 17:44Texas Fan. So at the time, Bubba Thornton
- 17:46was the head coach at Texas? And I was the number three, Drew
- 17:49close formation of bonds or a phone.
- 17:51Number one, Ryan brothers. Number two, so you know, those
- 17:53two guys, they were both Olympians, so I was in a good
- 17:56class in junior college and so what?
- 18:00Bubba don't call me, personally said, Philip I would love to
- 18:02have you but you have to walk. Walk on because I don't take
- 18:04Juco sprinters and I was like what?
- 18:07So I didn't know that. That's not me to say Chuckles
- 18:11for now. So yeah, I was, I was, I was in,
- 18:12d.c. called me. That was the great thing he
- 18:14called me. Um, so I was, I was hurt sad.
- 18:17But, um, like I took his all the time.
- 18:20Don't go and get Chasing the Dream school.
- 18:21If they don't want, you don't go in there, Chasing the Dream
- 18:23school. And so I had a full ride
- 18:25scholarship to the University of Washington.
- 18:26And so I signed with him in Seattle, it was a great
- 18:29experience, then transfer ticket selling University, okay?
- 18:32As I say, Seattle's a little far that means from Chanute to
- 18:37Dallas, is a decent little drive now, but now we're talking about
- 18:41your way out west. How was that going so far away
- 18:43from home? And really anybody that, you
- 18:46know, and talks like you, you know, no accents up there,
- 18:48things like that. So I'm the first thing is to do,
- 18:51just up different and so, if you haven't noticed, I do some
- 18:54different. I don't like going with the
- 18:55grain. I'm glad I just have different.
- 18:57And so I was like Pac-12 Washington, why not?
- 19:01And the code I love Shane at the time years ago, Oh sprinkles,
- 19:03they're not. He connected with him and I like
- 19:06the DMC. The indoor facility.
- 19:07Yes, I was like, I'm about to go up there and be different and
- 19:10strong tradition. And so I went up there, how'd
- 19:13you enjoy the time up there it was feels good but then I'm
- 19:16getting something happened. My credits, they have trimesters
- 19:19there so I would have been eligible right away.
- 19:21So I transferred down and to be eligible right away, okay?
- 19:24A lot of rain up there, man, they know that they need that
- 19:27indoor facility is amazing. Sits in the lake or whatever is
- 19:35right there. Well, it is pretty cool, pretty
- 19:37cool area. Be prepared for, you know, see
- 19:39that before. So that's why I'm attracted me a
- 19:40lot because I'm from Texas as I've noted before in my life and
- 19:43it's beautiful. Yeah that's cool.
- 19:45So you turns it would you say Texas?
- 19:47Southern as a sudden reversal. Yes sir.
- 19:49Yeah, another great school. Okay so how'd that go?
- 19:52It was get there. First, our first semester I'm
- 19:54there. I'm like now is that watching?
- 19:56This is a different kind of. I mean, who are 55 thousand kids
- 19:59at my school about 11,000. It's an HBCU historically, black
- 20:03college. And the first person history,
- 20:04ran nine seconds. Jimmy hyams was Prince TSU.
- 20:06So a lot of history there. Oh, wow.
- 20:09So I'm there on campus. I'm like, okay, it's cool, it's
- 20:11cool but it's not what I wanted to be again is not what we
- 20:13wanted to be like Andrew cause like I don't want to be here.
- 20:15And then again, the next two years, there's a great best
- 20:18decision of my life. I fell in love with the school
- 20:19and the rest is history. I was when the tops rooms and
- 20:22Nation the top six Pinner in the 20 meters top, 20 spending 100
- 20:26meters before those claims. He went to Nationals, I was
- 20:28doing it at his. You want a national so I was
- 20:31under for thanks to you guys to go National Four more shots
- 20:34fired Dwayne. If I know you're listening,
- 20:38don't still recruit his kids, okay?
- 20:40Don't do this. Sour you on Philip Roderick,
- 20:43right? You said you finished out your
- 20:47degree in broadcast journalism. Yes, sir.
- 20:50That's so funny. I'm from a journalism background
- 20:53as well as a print journalism major in college in the
- 20:57newspaper people say. Yeah interesting.
- 20:59It's a what were you thinking? As you're finishing up your
- 21:02career at Texas Southern as a Student athlete.
- 21:04What are you thinking of career at this point?
- 21:06I'm thinking, I'll stop by stop, Six Nations, 10, meters on,
- 21:09something about going pro. That was my main goal is going,
- 21:11running, professional, but also want to go ESPN.
- 21:14I want to be, I want to be like, Steven Naismith, that was my
- 21:16goal. He really motivated me.
- 21:18So I want to ask you your name, I'm not a big ESPN guy, but you
- 21:21know, Steven Naismith, Scott, like you later where we don't
- 21:24need more Steven Naismith, we don't need more yelling at the
- 21:27camera and he only won by the way but oh man, holy crap,
- 21:31that's how he was mine. Very cool to me.
- 21:34I like them together. So what did you end up doing?
- 21:37Juju join post-collegiate group. Yes I'm joined on, I'll turn
- 21:41pro. I'm going to Vegas for about two
- 21:44or three years. I'm trying out there Britton
- 21:46Davis. My first be within Canada,
- 21:48Saskatchewan indoor meet. So that's my first Pro media was
- 21:51pretty cool. Then I came back to Texas and
- 21:54try and couple more years down there.
- 21:56How was that first trip to Canada?
- 21:57I mean, because what I love about track and and kids that,
- 22:01you know, unless I try to go pro meeting, you know?
- 22:03You know, you don't end up going to the, you know, the top three
- 22:05people that ever can make it to the top top, right?
- 22:08But I love the ability to travel to new plate.
- 22:11You know, track took you to places that you never, you
- 22:14almost done. I'm going to Big swath here and
- 22:17stay with me. You never would have went to
- 22:19Seattle. You probably would have, you
- 22:20know, but, you know, saying, like Seattle and Canada.
- 22:23That's so cool. How was that experience going to
- 22:25a different country? I loved it.
- 22:27When I find got a passport. So I make here from Dallas,
- 22:29Texas. In the passport, accepted my
- 22:31family, nobody in my family, ever did that before.
- 22:33So Stuff that my family never did and it's actually amazing
- 22:35thing. I'm getting stamps in, they're
- 22:37going to Canada Ireland, stuff like that.
- 22:40It's amazing in his own, or through customs, just
- 22:42experiencing that the Small Things, expand the customs and
- 22:44stuff like. That was really cool.
- 22:47I'm going to England, there was amazing, you'll still saw Frozen
- 22:49but when we went there but it was it was nice - 20 degrees but
- 22:53it was crazy indoor facilities that they love tractor in
- 22:56Canada. So they treat you right?
- 22:58Like you like you're a superstar.
- 22:59So um, track overseas, really a big-time thing it.
- 23:03Understand that, it's like it's like NFL here and so they treat
- 23:06you like royalty when you're over there running for the pin
- 23:08in that country's. Wow, that's awesome.
- 23:10So, where is let's start working towards coaching now, where is
- 23:15where is coaching in your mind? You know, you're running, you
- 23:18can go to Canada, you mentioned Ireland, things like that,
- 23:20you've got this broadcast journalism, you have this dream
- 23:22of being on ESPN, if you don't TV and, you know, being a pundit
- 23:26or whatever they call them, where is coaching in your life
- 23:30as far as a career, it's not even there.
- 23:32It's not Nowhere near him. I've never thought about I'll be
- 23:35coaching ever in my life never thought in a million years, not
- 23:38one iota, not like, oh man, if I could be like, coach Murphy
- 23:43coach heart, he coached my idol MJ, not at all.
- 23:47Never thought about being coached ever, never thought
- 23:49about it. So how do we get there?
- 23:50What's the step over the many steps?
- 23:53562 seventh year running? Professional.
- 23:55I'm a dick. It's a career-ending injury on
- 23:57my to my PT telling and my ankle and my spring ligament.
- 24:01And so I have that surgery. I couldn't offer eight months
- 24:02which is the racing because um I'm a guy that, you know, I run
- 24:06for a living couldn't walk. So I have to spell out what I'm
- 24:09gonna do with my life for those, for the rest of my life,
- 24:12basically. So I started thinking about,
- 24:15maybe I can do private coaching by, get back from, from this
- 24:19injury. So I start doing like Preston's
- 24:21here and there and actually started getting a lot of
- 24:23clients. So first, I thought maybe two or
- 24:25three clients and also I get like 60 70 clients.
- 24:27Then I was like huh I'm pretty good at this.
- 24:29So let me start doing a summer track team so then I made us
- 24:32some track team. This in Texas.
- 24:35Yes, I think sex is. Okay, let's call it.
- 24:37No speed limit. Well, that was our team name is
- 24:39a, my first year. We had a girl, become
- 24:42All-American. She ran like a 24 and she'd come
- 24:44out American. And my second year, I had a girl
- 24:47win a National Championship Madison, Jeff, but she's gonna
- 24:49pass it goes in Texas right now. She wanted 20 meters as a eighth
- 24:52grader, but 24 1111 688 and is 56 as a eighth grader.
- 24:57So she's not too bad. And I'm like, okay, I can do
- 25:00this and as I'm doing this program up from nothing again,
- 25:03The ad from Fort Scott actually called me the first time and you
- 25:06say, do you want to become a coach?
- 25:09And I said, no, I turned it down the first year turned it down.
- 25:13Really well? Why I just didn't want to go
- 25:16back to Kansas now is because I and I got back from injury.
- 25:19I actually recover from an injury, it's not never run
- 25:21again, but I actually ran two more years after that and the
- 25:24doctor was actually amazed at Iran and then also did a show
- 25:28called next Olympic hopeful. Which is they pick 50 athletes
- 25:31in America and we compete. And for a sport like, rugby on
- 25:36bobsled skeleton, all that and actually finishing the top two
- 25:40and stalls on a TV show and finish top two best athletes in
- 25:43America. Well, I want to hold on.
- 25:44Want to know more about this, I've never heard this.
- 25:47Yeah. So it's some kind of reality TV
- 25:49show thing. Yes.
- 25:50Sorry yes. I think I am C Sports.
- 25:52It's on my link in my Instagram or Twitter so my link is called
- 25:55next Olympic hopeful and they pick 50 athletes to go against
- 25:59each other. Using Colorado Springs Olympic
- 26:02Training Center and me, 50 a 50 different kind of competitions.
- 26:06We did the 40. You just print lift weights and
- 26:08all that and they pick the best athlete at the end of the show.
- 26:11My finished talk to Josh Williams and me finished pop to
- 26:14for bobsled because, I guess you got picked to go to the bobsled
- 26:17training camp, who's 2018, who were the other you mentioned
- 26:20Josh who were the other 48 where these like legit people like
- 26:24where you like oh yeah, I gotta work to to win this thing.
- 26:27Oh, some solve the head competition that Lifetime
- 26:30Fitness I think is life, not? Because I'm not sure, but they
- 26:32picked a couple appease, the bear.
- 26:33And then a picnic people actually Sports other sports.
- 26:36I was when I got a pic from other sports all the track, got
- 26:38secrets from other sports track football, decathlon stuff like
- 26:43that. They pick people different
- 26:44people from different sports and they put together and you were
- 26:48one of the finals. Was for the bobsled.
- 26:51Yes, sir. So I thought offered rugby I'll
- 26:53stop going to be rugby then it moved me over to Bob split, huh?
- 26:57It's great. What is this?
- 26:59Little kid. Fourth grade field day, kid
- 27:03doing, bobsled and rugby. You grew up when you were
- 27:07telling me. This is the truth.
- 27:08Maybe all the way through High School, you had no idea what
- 27:10rugby even was did you know? I didn't, I couldn't see ya.
- 27:16I grew up in Alabama. We have rugby and we certainly
- 27:19didn't have bobsled. Let me tell you, I knew above
- 27:22sled was from the Winter Olympics but I certainly did not
- 27:24know what rugby was. Yeah.
- 27:26So what happened with the bobsled and thing?
- 27:29So 2018, I believe 17, we've been up here like plastic New
- 27:34York where they have the training thinner, beautiful for
- 27:37bobsled, we competed for the rookie championships.
- 27:39I took second rookie, rookie Championship.
- 27:41Again, Josh Williams is amazing. Mom say something he's on the
- 27:43USA team right now. He was like a 4235 de la magra,
- 27:47basically running for forth and he's a, he's a beast, he's
- 27:50amazing amazing guy. And after the second him so I
- 27:53don't feel bad, he's a great guy, were you you know there's
- 27:56my dangerous bobsled knowledge, right?
- 27:58There's a driver. And a pusher and I know there's
- 28:00two before man. All that kind of stuff.
- 28:01Were you a pusher or driver? I was a pusher I'm in the I
- 28:05can't drive. No, no no, I don't think that
- 28:08takes 20 years to do it. Is that right to dry their
- 28:11bobsled takes a long time to learn how to drive about that.
- 28:14They were really good at that. See I always thought like
- 28:17because you know you see where they go and I know there's turns
- 28:19and stuff like that but it feels like the bobsled just goes that
- 28:22way, you know but they're actually driving.
- 28:24It's a skill like that. Huh.
- 28:25You know. It's you have to learn a skill.
- 28:27Gotta practice that you have to be really good.
- 28:30I would have assumed you'd have been The Pusher, but I didn't
- 28:31want to assume because of, you know, they sell.
- 28:33But because of the acceleration pattern of sprinting, you know,
- 28:35things like that. How much since you've done both,
- 28:38you know, spring the high level and bobsled it at a fairly high
- 28:40level 2 are, there are a lot of similarities or there's some
- 28:44pretty July's differences. It's really similar.
- 28:48It's no difference except some any faster down.
- 28:50Could you help me in track to learn to push, and keep them?
- 28:54Keep my hips up front, you know, keeping everything in front
- 28:55pushing. So actually helped me in track
- 28:58as well. It's actually pushing now, it's
- 29:00like a drive that is basically staying low pushing out and when
- 29:04you get in top speed, make sure you can call and jump into this
- 29:06layer. So it's all the really thing.
- 29:08And then once you jump in, you're done right the dry.
- 29:10It's done. You just need to break down
- 29:12this. Pull the brakes at the very end.
- 29:14Well, that's cool. So you started Stop it.
- 29:15That's cool. It's a crazy thing.
- 29:19So draftsman down first, right? And I'm he's I asked them if
- 29:21they'd just how was it? He's like Philip I can't explain
- 29:23it. I was like what do you mean you
- 29:24can't explain. How does it feel?
- 29:26He said you just have to do it feel it.
- 29:28I was like all right whatever. So late class is one of the
- 29:30hardest tracks in the world by the way and be proud that track.
- 29:33So my first time going down we're going maybe 50 to 60 miles
- 29:37per hour. Hardest in regards to like
- 29:39navigating or hard. Like like if you if you vote
- 29:41crash both, okay. All the above is, you don't want
- 29:48any even try it. It's not.
- 29:50And so I'm going down. Not even fully pushing this way.
- 29:51I'm going down maybe 50 miles per hour.
- 29:53I'm going down I'm like oh my God, just like rally back and
- 29:56forth. Your heads been back and forth.
- 29:58You're swaying back and forth and I got out outside but that
- 30:01is due. And the code is like the most
- 30:03people we quit after. The first time, I was like I'm
- 30:06not quitting. So let's go up again and do it
- 30:07again. I love that attitude, like yeah.
- 30:10Alright, quit, that's not in the definition of all here.
- 30:12Let's get back up. So the next time you go fat like
- 30:14actually Push and go for questioning.
- 30:16Yeah. And it gets it doesn't get any
- 30:18easier. How fast did you get that thing
- 30:21going? Because I think you'll like 70
- 30:2480 miles per hour and it goes, It goes and I know they said,
- 30:28you're not real boxer to you pressed.
- 30:30So we went to Salt Lake and my finally crashed in Salt Lake and
- 30:33so. So first of all, how do you
- 30:35create like? I mean, again, I've seen him
- 30:36crash but I don't really understand how you crash and
- 30:38then how about of how did that feel?
- 30:40It just depends on the weight, might be shipped the wrong, the
- 30:42drive, make the wrong angles, and then you see you tip over.
- 30:45Can you slide on your head for about?
- 30:46Fifty, fifty yards, Dam, because you can't get out your just stop
- 30:51thinking you just stuck in there.
- 30:52Now, if you have your birth cert on, you'll tear the skin off, by
- 30:55the way. So yeah, it's amazing.
- 30:58I imagine that's got to be like, like being in a car crash.
- 31:03Like you have to, you have to be sore like the next door.
- 31:06Yes. Or it's nothing like it on you
- 31:08all the time. If you watch, watch, watch them
- 31:10until a is your you be actually shocked with these athletes.
- 31:12Can do it. So these are really big athletes
- 31:14on a little bit too, but You think about it?
- 31:15These are five, six, four, six three athletes or 225 230, and
- 31:19they're really good after they're not just regular people
- 31:21to sit on the couch. They're actually amazing
- 31:23athletes. They need to give love to those
- 31:24Winter Olympics, guys, because they're amazing.
- 31:27I like how you put that good athletes in a little tub.
- 31:36That's so interesting. You know, this is what I love.
- 31:39I mean, I'm just so humbled to be the host of the Gill
- 31:42connections podcast because I get to learn things that I never
- 31:45would have thought to learn. You know, here I am talking to
- 31:48you coach a new. We're going to talk.
- 31:49We're going to talk to you. Can we have talked to you coach
- 31:52track and field did not see bobsled coming into the
- 31:55conversation today. Man, I love that.
- 31:57It's so awesome. So how did you what happened to
- 32:00bobsledding? That you eventually left and got
- 32:03into coma? Just um, it got too hectic,
- 32:06bobsled and then College coaching.
- 32:10So as a time and track and then Tom have Ron called me.
- 32:14He said, you want to coach the first year bring the program
- 32:16back from that. There's been a Hiatus maybe 10
- 32:18or 15 years and they bought the program back to us and 19.
- 32:22I believe 19 was first year program came back, and he told
- 32:25me said that I'm gonna Hire a new culture you going to, are
- 32:28you interested this the second time?
- 32:29He asked me. Now the second time and I said,
- 32:33I don't know yet time, I still didn't accept it cause I still
- 32:36was running track. I still want to run,
- 32:37professional still had dreamed, I can go fast and I said, I've
- 32:42got another guy for you. Um, call Goodman, he's one of my
- 32:45good friends from Coastal Carolina.
- 32:46I said, hey man, he would take the job if I don't take it and
- 32:50so I'm trying to plug him in. At the same time, I'm trying to
- 32:52make my decision up and he's like, well you guys until made
- 32:56by lobotomy. A decision up and I'm still
- 32:57sitting like I don't know if I wanna go to Kansas and try this
- 33:00thing but beans time I still was pulling applications like maybe
- 33:03a hundred application. Like I know calls back at the
- 33:05time. So I got not one single call
- 33:07back from other schools. Yes, there are other schools.
- 33:10So this is interesting, we just had G Taylor on the podcast and
- 33:15she was talking about something very similar shade applied to
- 33:18other schools and didn't get the job or, you know, so and so
- 33:21didn't call him etcetera. And we talked about the attitude
- 33:24that you have with that because some people have that attitude
- 33:26of like, Well I'm going to pin every one of those applications
- 33:29on my wall. You seem like that?
- 33:31Yeah, it's right there. Yeah.
- 33:38You know it's hard to follow this Legacy sir.
- 33:41So I get it I get it. So yeah but you know I and I
- 33:46challenged LG Tone this one too now because she was that kind of
- 33:48attitude as well and the other attitude is and this is the one
- 33:52I would challenge you to accept and become is thank goodness me.
- 33:56The show didn't hire you and those 99 other schools didn't
- 34:00call you because you are where you are in a good place today.
- 34:04Yeah, because they didn't hire you and call.
- 34:06You know, saying it's always it's funny when we look back at,
- 34:09you know, decisions and things that we decided to do.
- 34:12And didn't do people who hired us and didn't hire us.
- 34:15And we always think about maybe how good it could have been
- 34:18psychol man. If you know, so-and-so would
- 34:21have hired me. I'd probably be in the power 5
- 34:23or whatever you think is. Maybe I'd be the coach of Texas.
- 34:25That would be a you. Like that job, right?
- 34:27You'll be okay. He's coming for you, Flo be
- 34:32careful, that's why hasn't he is no problem good.
- 34:37We often forget that sometimes those decisions that didn't
- 34:40happen could have been - as well, like, oh my goodness
- 34:43so-and-so hired me that could have been the end of my career
- 34:46because of bumble. But, you know, saying so it's
- 34:48like get the like, you know, I need, I want that external
- 34:51motivation. I want to show those other
- 34:52hundred schools how they missed out, but there's also like, you
- 34:55don't need that motivation. You know, saying you have your
- 34:57own internal motivation. Happy to be here.
- 35:00Exactly. So what made you so did Carl?
- 35:03Take the job? First of all, no, he didn't take
- 35:05this out. And so I say yeah, well girls,
- 35:08like I smell a setup here, hold a job.
- 35:20What is Tom's like why is he calling you what I mean by that?
- 35:23Is how do you know him? How does he know, use just from
- 35:25the Allen County in the Should somehow drawn.
- 35:28Okay, is what you want we want. And he's actually the he was a
- 35:30spring coach and he also when I transferred over so he he became
- 35:34the ad at Fort Scott reports got yes sir, what's not right?
- 35:40I love a track. Coach going into Administration
- 35:43on the first ones that actually do is go in and try code.
- 35:46So I love that because, you know, we need people who
- 35:50understand our sport in positions that are making
- 35:54decisions that affect our sport exactly and it Not an automatic.
- 35:57I mean there's been some ladies who were track people who have
- 36:00cut tracks, so it's can't believe you do that to your own
- 36:02sport but but I love that you know, attract guy goes into
- 36:07Administration, very cool. Okay, so that's how he knew.
- 36:09Yeah I was wondering where that came from a just seemed like
- 36:11kind of out of the blue but now it makes sense and he was follow
- 36:14me and he's fought with my so much fact teams.
- 36:16The three is I was going to turn attract.
- 36:18He's followed me for those three years.
- 36:19He's a soluble that team up from nothing from for athletes to
- 36:22being a National Power, which are somewhat red team.
- 36:24So can you did it before? It's got.
- 36:26And if I I only said, yes, in May.
- 36:27And I said, yes, I'll, um, I'll take the job.
- 36:30And then, I asked, Carlos, I call you in, as my assistant,
- 36:32coach and called him down again, by the way, it's my mom.
- 36:35The printer me down again but he's one of the best young
- 36:38coaches and Coastal Carolina and be one right now.
- 36:40He's amazing. Hey, first of all, I very much
- 36:43dislike that he's such a good coach because I'm a Troy
- 36:48University grown in the same conference.
- 36:51Yeah, exactly. Yeah, I'm tired of Coastal
- 36:53Carolina. Kids coming in and beat my
- 36:56Trojans. And all these events,
- 36:57specifically the hurdles and the Sprint's man, get out of here.
- 37:00Carl Goodman, you are terrible. You need to go to a different
- 37:03guy, actually. Maybe I should set up a
- 37:05different way. You are awesome.
- 37:06Get out of the Sun. Belt, how about that?
- 37:08Get away from my teams and we hired a recent grad, from
- 37:13Coastal Carolina, the River. Tomorrow.
- 37:15He's our pole, vault specialist. And so he talks highly of Coach
- 37:19Goodman as well, so, yeah, so you finally take the job.
- 37:23So, so what what, turn, what was the decision Point turning.
- 37:26Because you still Really weren't any you're doing this summer.
- 37:28Think summer Club coach but you weren't like, yeah, I'm like
- 37:30coach it, you're still a professional athlete trying to
- 37:33find his way and where I'm going to be professional.
- 37:35Bobsledding, it's printing Etc but something Tom, finally wore
- 37:40you down and something finally flipped for you.
- 37:41And you said, yep. Okay, I'm going to go to this
- 37:44profession. Yeah, I mean I know my time and
- 37:46track was coming down so I was like, okay I gotta find some
- 37:49nuts, you know, it's you know, my career might be over.
- 37:51Now I just you know, I wasn't running fast.
- 37:52I should have been running so I was like it's time for me to go
- 37:55do something else and coach. I started I can cook in a lot.
- 37:57I was like, okay that's what something that tells the
- 37:59applications and I'll try and get something.
- 38:00You know, gotta lie and I was like, well, it was already here.
- 38:03Keep getting asked has coached a team, so I'm going to do it.
- 38:06Now, I'm finally gonna give in and go try this, this coaching
- 38:09thing and so you joined Fort Scott, you said met, was this
- 38:12may of Twenty Ninth, Twenty One. Twenty Ninth twenty.
- 38:16Yes, sir. Yeah.
- 38:17Okay, let's say I didn't think you were that's basically just
- 38:19getting for Sky, you've had a season.
- 38:21So when 19 a no 1919. Sorry, was that Kobe year?
- 38:25I mean, everything, I canceled H20 was covid.
- 38:28Okay. So 19 May 19.
- 38:30Okay, so you got there and got your season canceled.
- 38:34Yes. Yes.
- 38:34Okay. My brother was born cancel.
- 38:36You got it. Yeah.
- 38:37I don't know how to count that, right?
- 38:38So I don't know if you can afford it, if you could.
- 38:41It's got for two years one. Yeah.
- 38:43I don't count the first. They didn't count.
- 38:46So talk to me about you get the job because me, you show up in
- 38:50May is there? Did you say there is no program
- 38:53at the time. So there's no kids, it wasn't
- 38:56program, it was It was basically just kids here at when I got
- 38:58here. But maybe what happens on the
- 39:00roster when I got here and I'm sorry about Thomas for people in
- 39:02the roster. Interesting you started in May.
- 39:05Yeah. So that's interesting because I
- 39:07started Neosho very similar. I had three or four kids from
- 39:12the former coaches program coming back.
- 39:15So I had Fork if I did nothing when I got there and met June
- 39:18I'd have four kids starting September or whatever, right?
- 39:22Yeah, but that wasn't going to fly for me.
- 39:24So what did you do in May? Did you Like okay, get my feet
- 39:27wet find out where, where's the building's the cafeteria, where
- 39:30my going to live? And we'll figure it out once
- 39:32September Comes and we'll start really building for 21.
- 39:35Or did you hit the feet? Hit the ground running at your
- 39:37feet going and start recruiting immediately, ah, sorry, couldn't
- 39:40meal it for me. I had a mentor that time I had
- 39:42nobody tells me what to do. Even Tom, did he cause have
- 39:45rounded help me at all? He was like, just you here to
- 39:48figure it out. So, basically, that's what I
- 39:49did. I figured out on a run and I
- 39:51don't how to recruit another call come athletes.
- 39:53I don't know how to look anything up, I did everything on
- 39:56my own. I own and I just figured it out
- 39:58as I went. So it was like, trial and error
- 39:59basically. And so what I did was start
- 40:02looking for kids on F, A dinette.
- 40:03And I went basically looking for kids at times are not great, but
- 40:07they're okay. And so I can be some kid sign
- 40:09and you know it's made. So everybody basically sign
- 40:11already been exactly, right. Hmm.
- 40:13And so somehow Exile, 40 kids, Become the fourth guy and
- 40:19everybody. The nation was like everybody.
- 40:20Drinking age was like, who is this kid guy at Fort Scott
- 40:23getting kids to come to Fort Scott?
- 40:24Kansas, they're often taken, by the way, I'm from Texas, are all
- 40:26from Texas and nobody could believe it resides some
- 40:29actually, some decent kids, some pretty good kids.
- 40:31Actually, about 3D one kids. I didn't have big offers from D1
- 40:34school. Coming down the fort Scott and
- 40:37nobody could believe it. And so it was pretty cool.
- 40:40How about 45 kids are first year in my women?
- 40:42She was about maybe eight athletes, deep women's side, but
- 40:44guys are more deeper because, you know, obviously wants to
- 40:46find a guy somewhere. This is so similar the same so
- 40:50you know we have both had a roughly you know for handful of
- 40:53kids coming back, right? Hit the ground running and you
- 40:56of course you're better than me. So you beat me, I didn't have
- 40:5840. Had about 30 to 35, I think the
- 41:01same but in mostly from Kansas, to be honest with you.
- 41:04But yeah. But a few Louisiana, Texas
- 41:06etcetera, a couple of real good kids out of you know and he
- 41:09didn't jump 50 but he's like 48, 49 ft, the triple etcetera.
- 41:14But so that's so interesting to the similarities there though.
- 41:17Yeah, but you went you had a pretty good quality kids coming
- 41:20in. Yeah that was all right, good
- 41:22pretty good quality yes, sir. The nobody could believe how can
- 41:25get some kids so fast and I had to be doing something wrong.
- 41:27I have to be cheating or something to get them to come to
- 41:29Fort, Scott, Kansas. And to be honest with you, my
- 41:31recruitment model is just be 100% honest with everybody.
- 41:34I have my some college coaches lied to me when I came in and so
- 41:37that's what rub me the wrong way.
- 41:38Like you lied to me about my career, you try to basically in
- 41:40my crib for a start it. And so, I went over to an
- 41:42athlete. So nasty.
- 41:43I'll tell them to 100% truth about her grades about classes
- 41:46about Fort Scott about the food dorms everything up 100 with
- 41:50everybody and so that's why I get 100.
- 41:52Most of my kids, I recruit because I'm gonna percent real
- 41:54with them all the time. Now, what's that mean 100% real?
- 41:58I know you just said, you know, the food and the town and yeah,
- 42:01all that kind of the grades that you're going to need all that
- 42:03kind of stuff. You put, maybe you as a coach.
- 42:05I can't, here's my style. Like don't come here, if you
- 42:07don't like your mom. Yes.
- 42:09On my energy, your Vibe. I like I like to be in home with
- 42:13the athletes. Actually, that's my talk on the
- 42:14phone room at all, so you can get a good feel for the person.
- 42:17Make you feel me? I can get fill the Dome at all.
- 42:19So they come for business or I go see them at their house and
- 42:22try to get a buy from them. And I tell them, exactly, 100%
- 42:25like this money, I'm offering you is no student loans in
- 42:27there. There's no hidden fees and
- 42:29there's nothing in there. This is what I'm offering you
- 42:31and so they actually trust me more because I'm giving 100%
- 42:34transparent with him at all times but they don't know that
- 42:36you're being 100% transparent. You know.
- 42:38Saying like you can tell him all this but until they experience
- 42:41it that's when they go. Oh, this dude was actually legit
- 42:43with me, right? Yeah.
- 42:45But having that attitude, Attitude and I love that
- 42:48attitude. By the way, don't, this isn't me
- 42:50questioning like you're doing it wrong.
- 42:51I think that's the exact way. In fact that I love that
- 42:54attitude when we talk about on the NCAA level with the transfer
- 42:57portal, like to me, it's like if you're more transparent about
- 43:01you and the school and your style Etc, you'll hear no more
- 43:06like kids will say, well I don't want to, I don't want to run for
- 43:08you, that's a good thing because that means you're not coming to
- 43:10your school and in a year or semester or two years
- 43:13transferring so I love that attitude.
- 43:15But with that, has that Her didn't you in the butt?
- 43:19Whether it's you lost the kid, or you got a kid that he was he
- 43:22or she was telling you. Yeah, that sounds awesome.
- 43:24And it gets there and he's like oh this sucks and he liked
- 43:27horror stories there. It's about what you said.
- 43:30I've been here for two years would have years.
- 43:32I have one kid transfer eye out for different junior college and
- 43:35that's just, you know, it might because of me but I think it's
- 43:38because of people that was around her and so it just
- 43:40happened. That way.
- 43:41My actually if you look in my emails I have about 100 kids.
- 43:44I want to transfer in to support Scott and so The opposite on my
- 43:47really nobody really here. It actually says, they don't
- 43:49like it here. Maybe they don't like the town
- 43:51because it's small, but it's really.
- 43:53Nobody really said that yet. So I'm really lucky.
- 43:56I'm really into, what have you been doing, what?
- 43:59You know, you mentioned, 40 kids, right off the bat.
- 44:01That's no, that's no easy feat. In a normal year, a full year,
- 44:06but you did it in May. When boy exactly doesn't 90% of
- 44:10the kids and maybe 99% the kids, know where they're going, or at
- 44:14least have it narrowed down to one or two or three, and Here
- 44:17comes the stranger from this strange school, right?
- 44:20We're not talking about, you know, coming into University of
- 44:22Texas and met and you call, it's like okay, whatever.
- 44:24I knows who and where, and what that is, right?
- 44:26You're calling from Fort, Scott Community, what's coach?
- 44:30I don't know who you are. I don't know where you're at.
- 44:31It's May. I'm about to walk the stage for
- 44:35my diploma. I already know where I'm going,
- 44:38but you were able to either find 40 kids.
- 44:40I didn't know where they're going and that says, a lot about
- 44:42the junior college system that that's possible or and, or 40
- 44:47kids that you were able to convince, hey, maybe just give
- 44:49me a shot. Like this might be the right
- 44:51school for you. How how did you do that?
- 44:54I'll tell him on. So, again is No tradition here
- 44:57at this. Cool is.
- 44:57There's nothing that you can sell them on.
- 44:59The can't someone championships? Like Barton can, you can't sell
- 45:02them on Pros? Like South Plains?
- 45:04Can you can't do that. So here I sell them on me.
- 45:06Basically guys, would you sell them?
- 45:08Telling me, I sell them. I run, professional track.
- 45:10I've been in June College. I've been to Olympic trials.
- 45:13I've been top, ranked in the nation.
- 45:15I sell them on me first. Then I Come on what they can do
- 45:18and what they can build the future, sell them on that and
- 45:22then they buy into it and it's like, I want to be some
- 45:24different. I don't want to go to the
- 45:26PowerHouse. I want to beat the powerhouses
- 45:28and that's why I sell them on. I'm be original.
- 45:30Be you be different. Don't chase the name.
- 45:32You can make the name wherever you go.
- 45:35Everybody knows Barton County is Barton County.
- 45:37It's a D1 school. I don't South Plains is a D1
- 45:39school. Everybody knows but their coffee
- 45:41bill. I wasn't sure those are D1
- 45:43schools and so I'll try to make for Scott if you want school as
- 45:45well. And And we try to make the name
- 45:48and he's doing this pretty good right now.
- 45:51That's that's a good selling point and it's going pretty good
- 45:53right now. So what I love about, you know,
- 45:56again I talked about the I live on Twitter and if you're on
- 45:58Twitter and we're not connected, what in the world are we doing
- 46:00here? We're going.
- 46:01So yeah, exactly listen to him exactly right, hit me up on
- 46:05Twitter at Mike Cunningham. It's easy to Remember My Name,
- 46:08all one word I was very blessed to get that name Twitter
- 46:11actually. So I actually because I had a
- 46:13relationship with Twitter, there was somebody who had at Mike
- 46:16Kennedy But he wasn't using it. And so I was like, Hey, as like,
- 46:20if he's not using it like he hadn't posted like three years
- 46:23or something like that. Yeah.
- 46:24Can I get it? He's obviously an active and
- 46:26they kicked him off and gave it to me.
- 46:29That's big time and it's not somebody out there right now is
- 46:31like mother after, that was my name.
- 46:33So some guy named Mike conahan was really ticked off right now.
- 46:36Yes, he is so on Twitter. You and that's where I see you
- 46:43actually. It's all aware us.
- 46:44You mean? I don't, I don't think we're
- 46:45connecting a Facebook. I don't do a lot on in Intagram
- 46:47doing more lately but I don't do a lot there.
- 46:49Yeah. Bollinger, beautiful me back.
- 46:50So I followed you by the way. Hey I have a flaw.
- 46:52Hold on now. So that's the second person.
- 46:54So I got to give my philosophy and it's the dumbest philosophy
- 46:57in the world but it's my philosophy so Twitter.
- 47:00I don't follow any non people. So if Fort Scott Community
- 47:05College track and field has an account, I won't follow them on
- 47:07Twitter but I'll follow Philip rhetoric on Twitter.
- 47:10Like it's me Twitter is so big on communication.
- 47:15So I want to talk to Phillip. Not Yeah, it's non-persian.
- 47:18I don't know who's behind that on if it's an essay needs,
- 47:20probably you. But you know, saying I won't do
- 47:23it. There's very few Accounts at,
- 47:24I'll follow on Twitter. It's like usually it's all of
- 47:26our facilities like gaily and Louisville and Spokane and
- 47:29cross-play. That's about the only thing,
- 47:30I'll fall on their on Instagram. I decided to do something,
- 47:34different over there and I didn't follow anybody in posted.
- 47:38And so I had something like, that's like three or four or
- 47:42five. Something right there hundred
- 47:43followers. So nothing big but only follow
- 47:4513 people. It is people that I knew like,
- 47:49yeah, like not even track people, like it was like, it was
- 47:53gonna sound so funny. It was my tattoo artist up in
- 47:55Chicago, it was Vanilla Ice who I'm friends with.
- 47:58Don't laugh, you know, those kind of people, right?
- 48:01But then but then recently, I changed on Instagram.
- 48:03So now I follow like a thousand and it's mostly accounts.
- 48:06So they are, I'll follow Fort Scott, Community College,
- 48:08Kansas, track and field. Etc.
- 48:10But through that time, people like you and other people have
- 48:13followed me. And so now I'm starting to catch
- 48:15up and follow you. And I've People like, oh, yeah,
- 48:17I think it was Eric would set it org and the throws coach there.
- 48:20I think he was like, oh, so now, you know, I followed you two
- 48:22years ago and now you're finally following me.
- 48:24I was like, here's my do philosophy.
- 48:27I had explained to him and he's like, Eric he goes?
- 48:29That's dumb as I got Eric. Yeah, okay, the better side.
- 48:33Let's get back over here. Yeah, but on Twitter, you have
- 48:37created this this brand. It's called building the brand,
- 48:41basically, we build the fort. When did that start?
- 48:45And how did you come up with that?
- 48:47To be honest with you, I was just thinking I need something
- 48:49different. Like, most junior colleges.
- 48:51Don't do stuff. Like I've started doing
- 48:53Graphics. I started doing everything to do
- 48:55ones. Do start doing visits.
- 48:56Most do clothes on do visits. We do I do you come by uniform?
- 49:01You try it on. I like to be different.
- 49:02I told you begin to show and to be different is people don't
- 49:05like it and so I got the Twitter and I was like, I do some
- 49:08different what it was different and built the fort this happen
- 49:10because it's Sports Guy's of court.
- 49:12And I'm like, we're building a program here and it's a good
- 49:15hashtag. And I started posting Go to Fort
- 49:17before and he kept called on big-time have to Conventional
- 49:20because of couple weeks ago at the convention ever.
- 49:22As I do the first guy who the fuck that and that was actually
- 49:25kind of refreshing actually realize that hey, people
- 49:26actually noticing it and I got a high schools all the time, do
- 49:29the for it. If it's pretty, pretty amazing
- 49:32to see people, actually love it and actually run along with it.
- 49:35That's super interesting, right? I mean right actually, yeah, oh
- 49:39yeah, okay, don't go too far. I people at times like, hey I
- 49:43got this new product idea. I want to patent it and I care.
- 49:46Ho. Okay, you know how much it cost
- 49:48First of all. Yeah, exactly.
- 49:49Yeah. More power to you.
- 49:51So go ahead copyright that see what more power to you.
- 49:56How many followers do you have on Twitter about what?
- 49:595000? Yeah, that's interesting.
- 50:01So in not that follower count. Yes.
- 50:04The be-all-end-all by any imagination and in the scheme of
- 50:07things 5,000. I'm about to say this and I have
- 50:09half of what you have, but 5,000 in this world's, not that many
- 50:12right? You know, it's not like we've
- 50:14got people, you have 10,000. Hundred thousand.
- 50:18Exactly Thirty forty fifty thousand something I'm always
- 50:21amazed at the coaches at 30 40, 50 thousands.
- 50:22I'm like wow, there's 50,000 people that care about you
- 50:25coach. That's awesome.
- 50:26I love. That is so cool.
- 50:27Great. But with a relatively, small
- 50:28amount of followers 5,000 in the grand, scheme of things that had
- 50:33to feel pretty good though, that people like it's catching on
- 50:36like the fire is going. It's going on, people said all
- 50:39the time to me and I'm just I'm shocked, even the big-time
- 50:42coaches come to me, are all fives.
- 50:44What the fuck, man? I'm loving it by look what
- 50:46you're doing, what you're doing. It's great to see that.
- 50:48Actually, this is my horse paying off some time.
- 50:50You know if you ever want to be the head coach University of
- 50:53Texas, you got to make sure people are putting build the
- 50:55fort with Philip rhetoric. Yeah.
- 50:57That's true. Like build a fort God.
- 50:59That's right. Philip Frederick the bill before
- 51:01guy. That's right.
- 51:02You got a copy right there. Yeah.
- 51:07So it's been a brick is another model like brick.
- 51:11You got to build a fort bit of a break since.
- 51:12So that's another one we don't Brick by Brick and so we just
- 51:16Holly, dude, be And be fresh beer, original the future kids,
- 51:20love that stuff. Like if you see us be about
- 51:22sleeves from athletes, I by I believe you if you look good you
- 51:25feel good. You're under a big believer in
- 51:27that if you look at my pictures from college, I have my glasses
- 51:29on. I have my sleeves, I was swagged
- 51:31out. So that's what I'm a big
- 51:33believer in that and so I believe the kids love that.
- 51:35And so that's what I use for social media in recruiting tools
- 51:38to what we're going to get to that because I want to talk
- 51:40about all of what you just said there, the sleeves and the whole
- 51:43thing will nights. We'll get there in a second but
- 51:45I'm gonna give you a free one. The copyrights, he said, Brick
- 51:48by Brick, you got to change that somehow to Rederick by rhetoric
- 51:50or break break break by red brick or something.
- 51:52You got to get this name right, I get the name of the right, I'm
- 51:57gonna try the next time next week somehow, you got to start
- 51:59forming it together man. Yeah.
- 52:01Like a Brick by Brick like gift or something like that but it's
- 52:04like your head. Like, you know, you're you're
- 52:06always with the yeah. And afford me, right?
- 52:19Okay, you talked about the sleeves and recruits with the
- 52:24uniforms and things like that. I love this topic, right?
- 52:27You know, you're on Twitter, you're active on Twitter.
- 52:29A lot to I'm rather impressed. And so you've seen these
- 52:33discussions we recently had Brian Kula from coolest Sports
- 52:37Performance. I think is the name of it out in
- 52:39Colorado. He's a big-time High School
- 52:41coach out there and we talked about recruiting out from the
- 52:44high school coaching perspective, right?
- 52:46Right? And I brought up this topic, so
- 52:48I'd love to hear your thoughts on it too.
- 52:50So there's there's kind of two camps to this trying on the
- 52:53uniform for recruits, right? There's the here's your side of
- 52:59it, you're like, hey, I want you to know, I won't put words in
- 53:01your mouth. Is your side of it?
- 53:02Who allows it? And let's find out why here in a
- 53:04second. Then there's the other side who
- 53:06says it's a privilege to, you know, wear my jersey so you
- 53:10don't get it unless you're on the team that kind of side,
- 53:12right? So why do you go to your side of
- 53:16Yeah, one of recruits come in, we let them try on the uniform,
- 53:19take the pictures, those kind of things.
- 53:21What's your reasoning? It makes them feel like they're
- 53:24part of a program, makes them feel like they're part of the
- 53:26team for just a couple seconds. Even if they don't sign with
- 53:29you, they feel a part of what Scott just for a little bit and
- 53:32it is for this for them. It's not for me it's for them to
- 53:34feel special. Is there a moment?
- 53:36They're recruiting is there a moment their time in history
- 53:39they deserved it because they earn their way to get to on a
- 53:41visit they're on their way for a scholarship offer they should
- 53:43desert. They deserve to have that
- 53:45intention for them for this a little bit.
- 53:46It and I'm big on the athlete. I'm not big on Mike me, it's not
- 53:50about me, it's about them at them today.
- 53:51It might seem cliche, but I'm really about to my athletes.
- 53:54That's why they love it here. That's what they come back every
- 53:56year to keep coming here every year because I'm about about
- 53:58them. And so, when we put the sleeves
- 54:01on a, put this jersey on uniform on, they feel good about
- 54:04themselves. And so that's not big on.
- 54:06Has it ever bit a kid in the butt?
- 54:09So on social media, they post their Fort Scott Jersey, and
- 54:12then they sign with Barton. In other part and people are
- 54:17like, oh, hey, look here, man. Did you ever hear about the the
- 54:21kid? This is a while ago now.
- 54:23And Alabama's the Alabama, Alabama Auburn, actually, it's
- 54:27true University, and then Alabama Auburn.
- 54:30But the kid, I think he grew up in Auburn fan.
- 54:33I could be getting this backwards.
- 54:35So he got a tattoo of the Auburn Tiger and he saw it, but then he
- 54:38signed with Alabama. That's crazy.
- 54:41I mean, if that's like it's one thing for the picture, I mean,
- 54:43those last forever to but the test like, dude, you got to be a
- 54:46purpose every day with an Auburn Tiger Tattoo, and I are gonna go
- 54:51out on a limb and say, he got hazed a little bit more than he
- 54:53should have every day with the kids.
- 54:57Trying out the uniform, not necessarily the kids, you have
- 54:59there, but it's in a broad sense.
- 55:01Have you ever heard of a kid who like a has a coach ever revoked
- 55:05and offer because they saw their recruit wearing somebody else's,
- 55:09you know, Of course, I'm not Tom once they see them in the first
- 55:13car uniform, they don't even criminal more.
- 55:14They make jokes like that, but I'm laughing, probably Furious
- 55:17or not, but they don't know they're lying.
- 55:19Come on Phillip rhetoric. I know you're still young and
- 55:22rookie coach here, who's got a lot of experience.
- 55:26Let me give you my experience coaching and recruiting the SEC.
- 55:29So I've done the blood battle. They are 100% lying to you.
- 55:34My friend. Come on, make me feel good.
- 55:35That makes me feel good. Yeah, you know they're lying to
- 55:37like work out. Well, they're not coming so you
- 55:39Mexico. Good and I do.
- 55:41But um, no, no coaches are erupted.
- 55:43I don't think so. I know one kid was a big-time
- 55:45recruit. Yeah.
- 55:46My uniform on and Instagram, then Simon Barton.
- 55:48So it was kind of funny. I was like, man this but it's
- 55:51okay tell them make sure they when they post that you signed
- 55:55with Barton, they use this picture right here.
- 55:59Okay. You know it, but it's fine.
- 56:01It's part recruiting. There's no hard feelings either
- 56:04way it goes. That's good.
- 56:05That's good. What's the this was not in my
- 56:08area of coaching and so I No it or get it.
- 56:11I guess this is my old man. Speak here.
- 56:15What's up with the sleeve? So I know you do the sleeves and
- 56:18they're wildly popular. A lot of other extension saying
- 56:20a lot, I still think this is the minority, I think maybe less
- 56:23than 10 to 15 percent of programs.
- 56:24Actually, still still actually use them today, but what's up
- 56:27with the sleeves? Is it just a fashion thing?
- 56:29Or is there something to it? So, when I did in college, I
- 56:33think I started. I like to think I started day,
- 56:34that sure that trained. By the way, I'm not even
- 56:36College. Um, I did it because I had calf
- 56:38cramps a lot, so my My body felt was too low and always, he
- 56:41caught crabs. Even if I was harder than that.
- 56:43So I went my first style and for my cramps in my calf, but I love
- 56:48the way you look, I believe that, like I said, you look
- 56:50good, you feel good, you run good and I needed my sleeves.
- 56:52I need my glasses on as well. And so whatever, my athletes
- 56:56want, they'll probably get if they earn it.
- 56:58So I ordered the sleeves, but you don't get them unless you
- 57:01qualify for Nationals. Oh, is that right?
- 57:04You're not gonna give it to everybody.
- 57:05We start the work first up. We have a standard here.
- 57:07You got to call Finn, a actually get to sleep.
- 57:09Oh that's cool. Now I like that a little bit of
- 57:12a distinction little bit. You know the goal setting.
- 57:15Yeah everybody doesn't get to sleep.
- 57:16No sir you got the actually work for?
- 57:18Darn it. Where did that come from?
- 57:20And what I mean by that is that's not necessarily a natural
- 57:24thing to think about because we're talking about a fashion
- 57:26piece we're not talking about a piece that makes you run faster.
- 57:29Yeah. Beyond the sense of look good.
- 57:31Feel good. So maybe you run bitter, it's a
- 57:33choice. I say good or but you had but
- 57:37that mentality of giving kids a goal and you know a stretch goal
- 57:41and a reward for that goal. Where did that?
- 57:44Cuz that from a coach you had or where did that come from?
- 57:49Most of my coaches had goals and we had this get, but I like to
- 57:53have something too. Sensitive and have them get
- 57:55something. Learn something, just like a
- 57:57practice here, like they have a good practice, I'll tell him.
- 57:59You have your practice. I might even get my ice cream
- 58:01Monday for practices that a great practical, great week of
- 58:03practice. So sometimes you got to get
- 58:05athlete's something because it gets boring.
- 58:06I mean, yes, we're in the circles every day.
- 58:09Dying every single day, you gotta mix it up a little bit
- 58:11having excited, and so that's what I do.
- 58:13I'm a little different, I'm excited to buy Sky and so I do
- 58:15stuff with your phone in your, in Fort Scott Kansas.
- 58:17So sometimes it's ice cream sometimes.
- 58:19Sometimes it's hot chocolate because it's for real.
- 58:23Yeah. How far is Fort, Scott from
- 58:25Chanute? I can't remember.
- 58:26It was about 45 minutes, I guess where I thought it was the Allen
- 58:29County coffee, or a little cubby holes all farther, but it was.
- 58:32All right there. Yeah, we did.
- 58:33I don't think for it. Scott.
- 58:35I don't think Fort Scott had a program when I was there.
- 58:37Probably didn't, I don't? Yeah, maybe they are.
- 58:39The distance program and I didn't pay attention to that.
- 58:41So exactly. Where was I going to go?
- 58:46I had a really good, follow-up question there and as you
- 58:50mentioned ice cream and hot chocolate and I completely got
- 58:53off track there. So talk to me about what are you
- 58:58coaching? You were a 24 kind of background
- 59:02kind of sounded like you didn't say this but kind of sound like
- 59:04you wanted to run the hundred cause you're like coach didn't
- 59:06let me run the hundred so you kind of want to run that cause
- 59:08you were too tall. I love that.
- 59:09Hope coach has changed his philosophy here in 2022.
- 59:13But what are you? What are you focusing on
- 59:15coaching? So I actually ran 100 in
- 59:18college. So when I got to college, I
- 59:19actually ran the hundred some-odd worth of every 100.
- 59:21Guess what we're in 10:30 as well.
- 59:24See you ran 717. That was going to say 11:32, you
- 59:28ain't 10:3. Huh.
- 59:31Where did where did you run? Did you run that at TCU?
- 59:34Because I'm very familiar with the five and six meter when
- 59:37that's where when I was in Mississippi.
- 59:39State. We those are first meet.
- 59:40We always go to TCU and run really fast, but never win legal
- 59:43now. It was actually a Southwestern
- 59:45campus so it's written that. It was 40 degree weather.
- 59:49So you were more like 10 mile per hour winds?
- 59:51I don't. Yeah, I know what that is.
- 59:58It was that bad. May there be many people that
- 1:00:10run Subterranean fuel run, some 10:30 so to be in the TNT that's
- 1:00:13legit man. That's awesome, not too bad.
- 1:00:16You stop you. Stop running that quarter.
- 1:00:17Never you don't know. I never ran it.
- 1:00:20I just never as a Mans race. I'm not there yet every quarter
- 1:00:28mile right now is like, that's right?
- 1:00:30That's the smartest thing he's ever said.
- 1:00:33That's a little bit. How he's on the track, the best
- 1:00:35athletes on the track. Every time you step on them,
- 1:00:37they're great. They're Tough man.
- 1:00:39So what are you focusing on coaching yourself a here at Fort
- 1:00:42Scott? Are you staying on the Sprint's
- 1:00:44or you have to maybe wine a little bit.
- 1:00:46When I first got here, I coach everything except I kept
- 1:00:50thinking I first got here, I did a two horse prints and photos in
- 1:00:55long jump. Now I have it closed coaching
- 1:00:56have a longtime coach and so a now it is focus on hurdles and
- 1:01:00Sprints in a little multi. They were not know what, what's
- 1:01:04Jeff it doing for you Izzie? He just robbed the bus all the
- 1:01:07time as he does, I'll prep him for know.
- 1:01:10He does a big distance, this is cross country so he does based
- 1:01:13on earth. Have you six my own down in?
- 1:01:15So Cool. So what are you do, you know,
- 1:01:18you were a sprinter, a straight Sprinter, you know, streets are
- 1:01:22meeting you 100 and, you know, you didn't devil out into the
- 1:01:25aid or anything, you didn't really do the quarter, but
- 1:01:27you're a sprinter by trade getting coached by several
- 1:01:31different people right Sheen who I love these.
- 1:01:33Great robes. Awesome.
- 1:01:35You know, go to Texas, Southern all of these guys and gals, that
- 1:01:37coached you had different. Even to the post-collegiate
- 1:01:39side, have different philosophies, you some
- 1:01:43bobsledding, which I assume there's some different strength
- 1:01:46and conditioning. In thought processes they are
- 1:01:49what are you doing? So you take all that.
- 1:01:51That's the we originally coach like we were coach so you're
- 1:01:54kind of taking that all those information pieces and your
- 1:01:57coaching that. But what are you doing for
- 1:01:59coaching for your professional development?
- 1:02:01In regards to the hurdle. Something you've never done the
- 1:02:03long jump and triple jump things you've never done.
- 1:02:06How are you? How are you getting yourself
- 1:02:08better? In a professional development
- 1:02:10side. I do a lot of calling other
- 1:02:13coaches that been done it before I call closed apps.
- 1:02:16Sometimes I talk to him about hurdles, I've talked to a lot of
- 1:02:19people about it. I'm a nerd and I know a lot of
- 1:02:23stuff, I'm not going to Mom about know a lot of stuff but I
- 1:02:25don't know everything. And as a coach, I don't think
- 1:02:28you have an ego as a coach you have to worry about the athlete
- 1:02:31first and if you have ego you don't want to change your ways
- 1:02:33so that her staff at the end of the day.
- 1:02:35And I'm so if I don't know something, I ask if they need
- 1:02:37help, they think my train is doing wrong.
- 1:02:39I ask what you think. I give me today and I actually
- 1:02:41asked them what they need and and so whatever they need help
- 1:02:45on. I'll figure it out and get Done.
- 1:02:47But I'm actually hose. That's my favorite event, the
- 1:02:48coach now. So it's gonna be honest with you
- 1:02:50for hurdles when tens 100. So that's my favorite events,
- 1:02:53the coach. And I fell in love with the
- 1:02:55coaching, the hurdles that it's the best event out there.
- 1:02:58Hurdles all the way I love them all.
- 1:02:59But hurdles, my very first ever email address was heard of Love
- 1:03:03at Hotmail. Well, yeah, that's I was very
- 1:03:06proud and I got that. Yeah, way back in the day.
- 1:03:09So you mentioned ego and egos an interesting thing, right?
- 1:03:13Because initially, when people hear ego, it's automatically in
- 1:03:16the - right because he goes bad but egos not bad right ego?
- 1:03:19No, never never met. Well, not never, you know,
- 1:03:24there's people who have bad ego, right?
- 1:03:25But, but egos tied to self-worth and self-esteem and motivation.
- 1:03:30Like do I continue to try to get better or not?
- 1:03:32Or do I sit now. Bad ego.
- 1:03:33Is our, do I sit on my Laurels? I know everything you can tell
- 1:03:36me anything. That's where bad exactly that
- 1:03:39you mentioned growing up as an athlete about your ego.
- 1:03:42He said it several times and not a bad way and I do believe we've
- 1:03:46talked about If you want to hear a little bit more in-depth
- 1:03:49conversation, go listen to the camera and bab episode of The
- 1:03:52Guild connections podcast, where we talked about processing
- 1:03:56information as an athlete. It has to be selfish because you
- 1:03:59have to turn it into a fast Sprint, time or whatever event
- 1:04:02versus as a coach. You now process, the same
- 1:04:05information, a coach can be telling you a mentor, coach can
- 1:04:07be telling you the same things you heard as an athlete.
- 1:04:09But now as a coach you're processing that and how do I
- 1:04:13flow that out of me to athletes? So it's a different type of ego.
- 1:04:16I'm still trying to learn and become better, but it's in a
- 1:04:19different capacity selfishly as an athlete.
- 1:04:21And again, I don't mean that in a bad way you have to be if
- 1:04:23you're going to be a great athlete, You're Gonna Be An
- 1:04:25Athlete. I think you have to be selfish
- 1:04:26in that. Respect versus a coach self
- 1:04:29less. I have to take the information
- 1:04:31to learn in transfer to an athlete.
- 1:04:33How do you, you know, you're still at a young age?
- 1:04:35You're not that far removed from being the athletes whether it's
- 1:04:38bobsledding or professional running Collegiate running 1018
- 1:04:43etcetera, you're not that far removed.
- 1:04:46How are You processing switching.
- 1:04:48The ego from selfish meeting. I'm at 10:18, well, I got to do
- 1:04:52everything I can. I mean, I got to block out a lot
- 1:04:54of stuff to run some 10 if I'm ever gonna make a meal out of
- 1:04:57this thing again, like career, right versus now, you're a
- 1:05:00coach. Now, you're trying to how do I
- 1:05:01take kids to 10, 18 and faster but process it through me.
- 1:05:05How are you? That's, those are two different
- 1:05:06stages of ego. How are you processing that at
- 1:05:09such a young age and such a early part of your career?
- 1:05:13At first it was difficult on us. Don't to be an athlete
- 1:05:15mentality. So I can totally About all the
- 1:05:17time. I have two egos.
- 1:05:18So my regular my fill of rhetoric is me.
- 1:05:21I'm a Leo, so I'm a laid-back guy, I'm just laid back chill.
- 1:05:24But my personality on the track is told if I turn the switch on
- 1:05:27and that's where King my nickname comes in it.
- 1:05:29The King guy. I'm egotistic.
- 1:05:31I'm I'm trying to intimidate you before I run.
- 1:05:33I'm trying to do all these things to be true and so I might
- 1:05:36be out there a little bit when it comes to track.
- 1:05:38So put on a truck culture-wise I'm the same track guy but I'm
- 1:05:42just tone it down a little bit. I'm still passionate about it.
- 1:05:45I'm still Hyung, go about it. But um, I actually listened my
- 1:05:49athletes more as a coach and I don't have an ego as a coach
- 1:05:51because, um, it's about the athlete if I've stuck in my ways
- 1:05:54that he never gets better and I never get better.
- 1:05:56And I'm stuck in my way and so, if I don't know, it's like I
- 1:06:00said, if I don't know if I think my athlete needs more stuff,
- 1:06:02I'll ask. And so it just if you have to
- 1:06:05turn it down a little bit at the athlete after athlete.
- 1:06:07Like I said, you just go hundred percent into it as a coach, you
- 1:06:10have to listen to people, listen, more and stop trying to
- 1:06:12do you the whole time. That's interesting.
- 1:06:15You seem to do Do you seem to be very affable and have a lot of
- 1:06:19friends, like when I see you around, I see responses to your
- 1:06:22Twitter and things like that. There's also an abundance of
- 1:06:25positive. Not just crickets feel.
- 1:06:27No one's like, replying it all to your stuff.
- 1:06:29Right? And things like that.
- 1:06:30So you seem very affable have you, but you, but you, you're
- 1:06:33very strong-willed. You mentioned being a Leo, which
- 1:06:36I'm a Leo as well. We have a lot right now man.
- 1:06:39Yeah, this is really weird actually.
- 1:06:44But but you so you have this Personality, the strong
- 1:06:48personalities, outgoing personality, but you seem to be
- 1:06:51pretty affable in this sense of Heaven, friends, and stuff like
- 1:06:53that, due to coaches. Have you ever noticed?
- 1:06:56And sometimes it's hard, right, because self-awareness that you
- 1:06:58have you ever noticed coaches kind of shine away from you?
- 1:07:01Because they're like, yeah, I don't want to talk to this guy.
- 1:07:04He's the king, you know, he's got this ego.
- 1:07:06Have you ever noticed that I would trust me it since I was
- 1:07:10running track in college? It's always been like that.
- 1:07:12They assumed it was because the way I act on track that I'm a
- 1:07:15bad guy or Or obnoxious, or is the egotistic guy?
- 1:07:19But if you actually talk to me, like most college, talk to me,
- 1:07:21they realize that okay, Phillip, you're just a length of
- 1:07:23laid-back guy. You um have fun you laughs,
- 1:07:25you're not really like that. Like you are and it's crazy.
- 1:07:28It happens all the time by contracted like you mean your
- 1:07:30you mean person by blah, blah, because my face, I have the ego
- 1:07:34I have when I'm on the track, then off the track on the whole
- 1:07:36different person. Like I said, I bought time and
- 1:07:38so most coaches, like, I don't know about this guy, but they
- 1:07:40never talked to me before. So if you actually talk to me
- 1:07:43actually get to know me, you'll actually be on like he's really
- 1:07:46cool. We'll have a drink with him,
- 1:07:47he's a good guy. So what funny story some attract
- 1:07:51this past year and a Eugene Olympics.
- 1:07:54Tried Barn, tricorn fall. You came out to me.
- 1:07:56He texts me say, I want to meet you today.
- 1:07:57Phillip I said, okay, that's fine.
- 1:07:59Each monster means like, do you not like I thought you were?
- 1:08:01I thought you're gonna punch me. Why did you want to meet you?
- 1:08:05Then he's like, I want to get punched day.
- 1:08:08I'm gonna reach out to this guy. Yeah.
- 1:08:10He's like, you're not like, I thought you were, you see me on
- 1:08:16the track? I'm not really that guy.
- 1:08:21I'm passionate I think my passion and anger or aggression,
- 1:08:25which is not, I'm passionate about what I do.
- 1:08:27All right, take this hundred percent serious, I want to be
- 1:08:29great. I want to ask is be great if
- 1:08:30they are doing wife. I try to be the best at.
- 1:08:32I don't care if I'm the janitor. I'm trying the best dancer in
- 1:08:35the world. So I'm trying to the best coach
- 1:08:36in the world. I'm totally best recruiting the
- 1:08:37world. I'm covering that for scatter
- 1:08:39Texas. I want to be the best in the
- 1:08:41world, what I do. So I take it to, it's fun, you
- 1:08:43know, my past about it's funny because Carl, I would describe
- 1:08:46the Exact opposite of you. He looks like he's laughing all
- 1:08:49the time and he is laughing all the time.
- 1:08:51Yeah, I mean that the best pleased with the most affable
- 1:08:54guy in the whole world. Welcome to death.
- 1:08:56Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
- 1:08:58So you mentioned recruiting what I love about Juco coaches and
- 1:09:02athletes is it's a very unique situation, right?
- 1:09:08I don't see most of the time but a lot of the time our athletes
- 1:09:11are coming to Juco because of like we mentioned with your
- 1:09:15example, right mess. Around in high school, not
- 1:09:17realizing. Wow, I've actually got to do
- 1:09:19some academics as well as run fast things like that.
- 1:09:21So it's kind of Second Chance you if you will.
- 1:09:23Right, that's the whole Netflix show which Netflix totally
- 1:09:26should do. Last chance you at Fort?
- 1:09:29Scott will be there. So nothing's going to happen.
- 1:09:43So as a Juco coach, you're not only recruiting in a vast
- 1:09:49variety, right? So you're looking for non
- 1:09:50qualifiers, maybe you're looking for qualifiers at just need
- 1:09:53another year or two of, you know, Collegiate coaching to go
- 1:09:57to a quote-unquote bigger school or what.
- 1:09:59Not. But at the same time you're also
- 1:10:02that High School coach. Meaning you're also trying to
- 1:10:04get your sophomores recruited. All right?
- 1:10:07You want to get move them onto a four-year, to receive a degree
- 1:10:10like you did, right? Talk to me about, About how are
- 1:10:13you? And you went through it as an
- 1:10:14athlete. How are you doing that as a
- 1:10:17coach? What are the struggles?
- 1:10:19That happen there, actually? When I fear things that do it
- 1:10:22actually give my kids in and out, it's wonderful.
- 1:10:24Things do actually see him come in and I told him I recruited
- 1:10:27them. Get you D1 school, I'm get you
- 1:10:29this cool and actually see him coming for coming to light now,
- 1:10:31it's actually amazing. Is it feels great this way, not
- 1:10:35that difficult for me, it's actually fun.
- 1:10:36I said it's fine. The hot thing I'll say about
- 1:10:38high school, we could high school athletes.
- 1:10:40It's um, sometimes the coaches or the Jones believed ruko is
- 1:10:44beneath them, and that's the major thing that the kids are
- 1:10:47fine. They want to come.
- 1:10:48They love it here when I have kids, I'm visits that go D1
- 1:10:51schools. They want to actually come in.
- 1:10:52I'm not. Well, I'm on their last three
- 1:10:53choices and versus you see, Texas, Fort Scott and Florida
- 1:10:57State sometimes, and it's crazy to see that that we're even up
- 1:10:59in the conversation, I have D1 coaches.
- 1:11:01The two coaches call me all the time and say, Phillip, you're
- 1:11:03really everywhere. Everybody told me they were
- 1:11:05gonna stop before Scott and what are you doing different?
- 1:11:07It's just the parents and some other coaches understand that I
- 1:11:10don't recruit just for grades. So you might be a deal on
- 1:11:13qualifier and I'm gonna recruit you.
- 1:11:15Like I said, I think outside the box if you look at our roster
- 1:11:17right now about 85% of us or do you want to eligible applicants
- 1:11:20when I recruited him? Wait, hold on for real.
- 1:11:22Yes, I don't recruit like the real issue in college.
- 1:11:24Wait, they assume that during college is for?
- 1:11:27I changed the whole model. Oh yeah.
- 1:11:29Because the so that was one of the parts that I struggled a
- 1:11:32little bit when I was coaching, was, I felt a little bit like a
- 1:11:36piranha, maybe where I'd ask to get grades.
- 1:11:39And as soon as I saw, they were qualifiers like, yeah, see you
- 1:11:42later. And I'm happy that they were
- 1:11:43qualifiers. It was like, you're not coming
- 1:11:45like I still remember. I was trying to recruit Tiffany
- 1:11:48Ross from Miami, you know, 13 to or something out of high school
- 1:11:53and I was like, yeah, it's like we're just a great alternative
- 1:11:55if she doesn't have the grades and she's like well she's got
- 1:11:58good grades and Michael some people think they got good
- 1:11:59grades and they really don't like do you mind you know CM
- 1:12:02transcripts and the counselor similar transcripts and she was
- 1:12:05so smart three point eight or so I don't even ever but it was
- 1:12:09like there was no question she was going to qualify as you
- 1:12:11know, signing with South Linna, many, many, many time
- 1:12:13All-American. Awesome person, Etc.
- 1:12:16But it, literally, I remember getting that I still nervous to
- 1:12:18the day. A fax machine.
- 1:12:20You don't know what a fax is. Philip, the grades came across
- 1:12:23on the fax machine. I look at her transcripts and I
- 1:12:25was like, well, not recruiting her anymore.
- 1:12:28Yeah. But you did, you did you say 85%
- 1:12:31of your team, or your one qualifiers?
- 1:12:35So why it don't take this the wrong way, you know, we're not
- 1:12:39gonna trust me. Great Scott versus Texas.
- 1:12:41Why is it It signing going to Fort Scott, I owe the Kansas.
- 1:12:45That's the same as Chanute Kansas.
- 1:12:47I know exactly where you're at. Come on now, versus going to
- 1:12:52whatever school doesn't matter, Northwestern State UC Davis, you
- 1:12:55know, I guarantee you no one's Turned Down, Troy University to
- 1:12:58go to Fort Scott because Troy University is heaven on Earth,
- 1:13:01but but what, so why 85%. So I like I said, I got my first
- 1:13:06have a job. I do something different from
- 1:13:08everybody else, like I can't compete with.
- 1:13:09Like I said, Barton's in the South Plains I can't I can't get
- 1:13:12through. You with them with their
- 1:13:13International kids, we don't get any here so I can't compete with
- 1:13:15him that way. So how can I be competitive?
- 1:13:18And you know, and so I started. I was like, why do I have to go
- 1:13:21out to kids with bad grades? Why do I have to do that?
- 1:13:23Why is it rule that I have to? It's not.
- 1:13:26And um, so my motto is Go for kids that are men.
- 1:13:30Major kids that want to go big time, be terrified and that's my
- 1:13:35motto, don't go in there. Like I said, don't go into it,
- 1:13:37chasing your dream school. You can come the fourth guy for
- 1:13:39no money whatsoever. Are your pocket, didn't leave?
- 1:13:42But no debt and go to your dream school and two years when I
- 1:13:44develop you into a better athlete, when you listen and do
- 1:13:46what you got to do, become a better athlete.
- 1:13:49I mean, and so that's what that's what that sounds good.
- 1:13:52It sounds good, but, but it's working, it's working.
- 1:13:56I lose a couple a little couple but it's working.
- 1:14:00Do you actively not recruit non qualifiers?
- 1:14:03Or is that just part of your recruiting?
- 1:14:05Know, I still could not call for us.
- 1:14:07Like I said, I still give you a chance.
- 1:14:09No problem with that at all. But I would recruit both his
- 1:14:12hand in hand. It, Go Pen in Hand, that's I may
- 1:14:15be out of touch in thinking that you might be the quote, unquote,
- 1:14:19only one doing this and maybe like, maybe nobody are advances
- 1:14:21from South Plains. Going to call me up.
- 1:14:22Like a man, we doing this stuff too but that seems from my
- 1:14:26experience of how I did it in Juco, that seems I love that.
- 1:14:30You said you do things differently, right?
- 1:14:32Like, I kind of have this motto if your competitors doing it, do
- 1:14:35the opposite. I'm going to want to be like
- 1:14:37everybody else. So I love that kind of came in
- 1:14:39analyzed it and we're like, all right.
- 1:14:41Well, this seems like I could go the same route, everybody else's
- 1:14:44or, but maybe I could try something different.
- 1:14:47Yeah. So like at 12 old girl trouble
- 1:14:50girl in Texas, right? She's not getting the power of
- 1:14:52file called upright, but in Juco, she 12.
- 1:14:55Oh, that's pretty decent. And I can develop her into 11
- 1:14:58second girl right in She has a four-point-oh GPA while but I'm
- 1:15:01not offer her a scholarship. You said, I'm saying that.
- 1:15:04Is it that kid getting offers from traffic?
- 1:15:07Great D2, schools, Ashland Minnesota, state, decent, Davis.
- 1:15:12I think maybe I might've just defended them.
- 1:15:13I'm not sure. But what's Texas A&M?
- 1:15:17Yeah. So, but still, but, but you're
- 1:15:20trying to find those kids that have the quote unquote, Big
- 1:15:22Dreams of going power 5. So after you can Tas that can go
- 1:15:25power 5 or bigger universities and be honest with you, I think
- 1:15:29The, I think a mystery coordination, if I was at Oregon
- 1:15:32deposit, Austin I was in LSU, those kind of places, I can get
- 1:15:36all the athletes, the number one after the America.
- 1:15:37That's what I think. I guess he's going to Fort
- 1:15:39Scott, Kansas. I can get them to come into
- 1:15:40those schools. And so my again I got copies as
- 1:15:43a coach, that's gotta shoot your shot at those athletes.
- 1:15:45You can't just say, oh, because they're got your grades.
- 1:15:47I'm not gonna try. I tried and I got and I'm like,
- 1:15:50oh man, Works keep going. And so you actually have the
- 1:15:53confidence a coach as a recruiter believe in your
- 1:15:55product leaving the standards that we have here from day one
- 1:15:58and it's working. Winning like the last last year,
- 1:16:01our team winning team, you have four girls, high school event
- 1:16:031244, right? In high school, it took second
- 1:16:06Nationals in 401 15 min 45 3, right?
- 1:16:10That'll tip number 2 and D 2. That would take s and D to talk
- 1:16:1316 a nation and D1. Those four girls are around 11
- 1:16:17seconds. Last year.
- 1:16:18They all were 12 for well for us legit or like the they actually
- 1:16:2311 9 P RS but you can show it on track 11 right ter film.
- 1:16:29S last year. So if you did, I'm big on
- 1:16:31development. And so if I can develop you into
- 1:16:33athlete, I watched you run. I'll see what I can do to you
- 1:16:36off your scholarship and so I developed into four girls 11
- 1:16:41seconds now and they all got be one offers right now.
- 1:16:43Sure. No ticket a Nationals to South
- 1:16:45Plains for freshman 12 4 seconds and now they're 11 seconds.
- 1:16:49Do all four return before we turn?
- 1:16:51Yes certainly actually has two more freshmen.
- 1:16:53They actually get better than them High School PRS so we're
- 1:16:56all right, man. Look out.
- 1:17:00Build the fort Brick, by Brick motto, and kid at a time.
- 1:17:04One kid at a time, Philip man. That's awesome.
- 1:17:08I love that attitude. I love, I love your attitude of
- 1:17:12the best, recruiter in the nation.
- 1:17:14I'm a really good coach and I love that you seem to have this
- 1:17:18with that this. Okay, I need to continue to get
- 1:17:21better at my craft, like it's not just like, I'm know the best
- 1:17:24and I think. Yeah, I love that answer.
- 1:17:27That's going to be really Saying to, you know, we got you here on
- 1:17:30the podcast. So early in your coaching,
- 1:17:32career is gonna be really interesting to see kind of 5 10,
- 1:17:3615 years from now, you know, how it's going and where you're
- 1:17:40doing. But I have a feeling it's going
- 1:17:42to go pretty well, I just have this feeling, man.
- 1:17:46I said Thank you, right? Yeah, I hope you're building the
- 1:17:51fort Brick by Brick somewhere. Who know, you know what?
- 1:17:54I have no doubts. You going to be a Texas 12.
- 1:17:56I know that your dream school. So let's put the name.
- 1:17:59That's right. I will be in Austin when I look

- 1:18:58I'm going on record Boys, which remember he said he broke all
- 1:19:02the Neosho. He broke all my records that I

- 1:19:06I felt bad. Thank you so much for being here
