- 0:00Hello, everyone. This is Jacob Emerson with the
- 0:02Becker's Health Care podcast.
- 0:03Thanks so much for tuning in today where
- 0:05we're excited to talk about navigating market dynamics,
- 0:09innovation, and the future of member care.
- 0:12Joining me today for our discussion is Rob
- 0:15Duffy, who is the chief technology officer at
- 0:18HealthEdge.
- 0:19Rob, thanks so much for taking the time
- 0:20to be with me on the podcast today.
- 0:22Hey. Thank you for the invite. I really
- 0:23appreciate it. Thank you for listening to the
- 0:24conversation.
- 0:25Absolutely. Likewise. And before we dive into everything
- 0:28we wanna talk with you about, can you
- 0:29tell us a little bit more about yourself
- 0:31and your career background?
- 0:33Yeah. My name's as you've introduced already, my
- 0:35name's Rob Duffy.
- 0:37I come from a background,
- 0:39at, large tech companies like Amazon
- 0:42and, Uber and Expedia and Salesforce, you know,
- 0:45really
- 0:46developing large scale platforms and and creating
- 0:50these incredible pieces of technology that can be
- 0:52leveraged to unlock huge amounts of innovation and
- 0:55and velocity
- 0:57with the with their consumers. And,
- 0:59I joined HealthEdge
- 1:01nine months ago, ten months ago. And when
- 1:04I joined HealthEdge, it was,
- 1:06undergoing a little bit of a platform transformation.
- 1:09And, I brought with me,
- 1:12the the sort of non health care,
- 1:15technical
- 1:16expertise that you would find at these large
- 1:18companies, and the the job has been really
- 1:20transforming
- 1:21and bringing the the products that we have
- 1:23together and creating, creating this platform
- 1:26of converge technology.
- 1:28Absolutely. So it sounds like a unique career
- 1:30journey that brought you to HealthEdge, Rob.
- 1:33Let let's get started today by talking about,
- 1:35as you know, interoperability
- 1:37and integration
- 1:39becoming increasingly crucial in health care operations today.
- 1:43Yeah. In this environment, what do you think
- 1:45is the role of platform based technology, and
- 1:48what are some of the key advantages
- 1:50for health plans in particular?
- 1:52So if you think about a a, you
- 1:54know, a health plan,
- 1:55they have thousands, if not tens of thousands
- 1:58of different integrations and and pieces of data
- 2:00flying around and different data models and ways
- 2:03that they get,
- 2:04data from one place to another.
- 2:07And what we're looking at now is some,
- 2:09regulation
- 2:11that, is saying, well, we should we should
- 2:13try and talk in a standard format. We
- 2:14should try and talk in a in a
- 2:16single way. And when you have lots of
- 2:18in integrations and you have lots of pieces
- 2:20of technology,
- 2:22what you essentially have is is a large
- 2:23piece of technical debt that you have to
- 2:26deal with when you have to try and
- 2:28get all of those things to speak the
- 2:29same standard.
- 2:30And I think
- 2:32many people in the industry
- 2:34have seen in the last, you know, five
- 2:36years, maybe even ten years,
- 2:38that an approach of sort of stringing
- 2:41lots of different point solutions together
- 2:43means that anytime you wanna change something, you
- 2:46have to change it in many different places.
- 2:48And now that we're seeing this broad, generalized
- 2:51drive towards a standard data format and a
- 2:53standard data model, it means that this string
- 2:55of pearls approach is becoming increasingly difficult and
- 2:58complex complex to manage. So I I think
- 3:01when I think about platforms, I think about
- 3:04taking it away from a large number of
- 3:07point solutions and point tools that you have
- 3:10to constantly change to keep up with changing
- 3:12regulations and and changing standards and changing formats
- 3:16and really moving that across to, you know,
- 3:18a platform level approach.
- 3:20That means that companies like HealthEdge can do
- 3:22that work once we can do it in
- 3:25in the right places, and then you don't
- 3:27have to worry about trying to keep up
- 3:29with all of these
- 3:30changes in standards and formats and regulations.
- 3:33As a health plan, you can really lean
- 3:35more on these platform based technologies or or
- 3:37technology platforms to do that work once.
- 3:41Let me follow-up with you there, Rob. How
- 3:42would you say that regulations
- 3:44are driving the push for a more connected
- 3:47health care ecosystem?
- 3:48I mean, we obviously have, you know,
- 3:50this buyer standard is coming on, coming on.
- 3:53We have the, you know, the the auth
- 3:54requirements,
- 3:55and and those are really driving this
- 3:58consolidation
- 3:59around a a data model
- 4:00and a way of communicating
- 4:02across different health health care applications.
- 4:05And it it's become not optional. You know?
- 4:07It's become a thing that the the regulation
- 4:09is driving.
- 4:10People have to keep up with that regulation
- 4:12and have to be compliant with it. And
- 4:14what that means is that, you you know,
- 4:16the CIOs and CTOs that I speak to
- 4:18are really looking at a a large project
- 4:21ahead of them to get all of their
- 4:22different systems and tools compliant. And and that
- 4:25means
- 4:27that the the work to do that is
- 4:29can sometimes feel overwhelming.
- 4:31And what we're seeing is people are looking
- 4:33for more converged solutions that talk to each
- 4:36other, that work together, and can handle
- 4:38the the changing regulatory environment,
- 4:41because I don't think anyone thinks, you know,
- 4:44this is gonna be a short journey,
- 4:46towards interoperability,
- 4:48but, they're looking for these converged technology platforms
- 4:50that can handle that for them and and
- 4:53allow them to keep up with the pace
- 4:54of change without having to make constant investments
- 4:57in in the technology.
- 4:59And then they can focus their energy more
- 5:00on helping their business users and helping their
- 5:02their their internal customers and their external customers
- 5:06with with more innovative products.
- 5:09Absolutely. And I think the the natural question
- 5:12to that, Rob, is what are some of
- 5:13the biggest challenges you're seeing payer organizations face
- 5:17when transitioning from that siloed technology to a
- 5:20fully integrated platform? And and, ultimately, how can
- 5:23they navigate that effectively?
- 5:26Yeah. I think when you look at any
- 5:28large,
- 5:29ecosystem of tools that has been built up
- 5:32over time,
- 5:33anytime you you pick a tool and you
- 5:35implement something and you model a business process,
- 5:38you make some trade offs, you make some
- 5:40assumptions,
- 5:41and you have to, you know, change the
- 5:43way you work because of something that that
- 5:45tool does or doesn't do,
- 5:47in a way that you'd like it to
- 5:48do. And when you deal with that and
- 5:50you have a we have a large ecosystem
- 5:52of maybe twenty, twenty five, 30, 40 tools,
- 5:55that's, you know,
- 5:56a huge number of places where you have
- 5:58made assumptions and made changes to your business
- 6:01model, and you've made changes to your, internal
- 6:03process and maybe even the staff mix. So
- 6:06the the organization
- 6:08becomes a reflection of the technology that that
- 6:11you have in place.
- 6:13And that is a,
- 6:15hard thing to change because if you want
- 6:17to swap out tools,
- 6:18you can't just swap the tool out, replace
- 6:21it with a new one because that new
- 6:22tool will have,
- 6:24you know, assumptions and things that it does
- 6:25well and things does doesn't do. So you
- 6:27really have to think about this as a
- 6:29a transformation of the business and a transformation
- 6:31of the business models and business processes as
- 6:33well as just, a a technology transformation.
- 6:37And and that is, I would say, one
- 6:39of the biggest challenges, which is making like,
- 6:41figuring out what to keep and and what
- 6:44to throw out and what what is, you
- 6:46know, broken and and needs fixing and should
- 6:48be fixed and can be fixed.
- 6:50And, you know, doing that and doing the
- 6:54technology change is is a big challenge.
- 6:57Understood. So this has to be an enterprise
- 7:00wide approach. And
- 7:01as you see health plans continue to adopt
- 7:04a platform based approach,
- 7:07are there change management principles that they should
- 7:09be keeping in mind to ensure a smooth
- 7:11transition
- 7:12and to maximize their their impact? Any any
- 7:15resources you'd recommend, Rob?
- 7:18You know, change
- 7:19management for me and the the dealing with
- 7:22the people aspects of of technology transformation,
- 7:25I think
- 7:26is 70, if not 80% of the job.
- 7:29I think I've I've been doing platform transformations
- 7:31for
- 7:32two and a half decades, and I think
- 7:34I've come to the conclusion that
- 7:36focusing
- 7:38on the people and focusing on the people's
- 7:40transformation and and helping people have agency and
- 7:43decisions and ensuring that you're not forcing technology
- 7:46on them that they're bought in. They understand
- 7:48the why, and you really dial on dial
- 7:50into the change management,
- 7:52the human elements of change management. I I
- 7:54think that is
- 7:56one of the key things to adopt.
- 7:58And I don't think any platform really is
- 7:59ever successful when it focuses just on the
- 8:01technology,
- 8:03and and sort of underestimates
- 8:05the amount of,
- 8:07people change management and and human change management
- 8:09that's gonna need to to go on. And,
- 8:11you know, in terms of frameworks or resources,
- 8:14I think
- 8:15as you go through
- 8:16this sort of change management process,
- 8:19there's there's a large number of,
- 8:21like a cloud migration is a good example.
- 8:23And there's a large number of resources that
- 8:25are are really applicable to any kind of
- 8:27any kind of large scale
- 8:29change management initiative that is put out by
- 8:31companies like
- 8:33AWS and Azure. And those those kind of
- 8:35cloud hyperscalers that it's their bread and butter
- 8:37to do large scale technology transformation. So they
- 8:40often have playbooks and frameworks that will enable
- 8:42you to do the cloud migration, but I've
- 8:44often found that they're actually just as applicable,
- 8:47if you're changing,
- 8:48what what ticketing system people are using or,
- 8:51you know, if you're changing Office or whatever.
- 8:53It's it's the same principles to,
- 8:55get people aligned, make sure people are bought
- 8:58in, make sure people understand why things are
- 9:00happening, make sure they have agency
- 9:02in the decision making. And and those those
- 9:04frameworks,
- 9:05they're published on these websites. They're they're very
- 9:07easy to consume. And,
- 9:09often, the large scale of cloud migrations means
- 9:12that they have to be very good and
- 9:13very robust. So you can sort of copy
- 9:15that as a template
- 9:16and move it move it across. And I'll
- 9:18say, like,
- 9:19never underestimate the amount of times you have
- 9:22to communicate with people. I think when you
- 9:24are a a leader
- 9:27leading change and leading transformation,
- 9:30it is your
- 9:31day to day
- 9:32job to to constantly be thinking about the
- 9:35transformation and constantly be thinking about the the
- 9:38change management
- 9:39and constantly be thinking about, like, how the
- 9:41communications go out and the why, and you
- 9:43probably are, you know, giving the same presentation
- 9:46to 10 different people every week. But I
- 9:48always think about it in terms of what
- 9:50is that the person that I am talking
- 9:53to or I'm communicating with or presenting to,
- 9:55what is their worldview?
- 9:57And oftentimes, their worldview is
- 10:00thirty or twenty nine days out of the
- 10:01month,
- 10:02they are doing their day job and they
- 10:04have fire drills and customers to deal with
- 10:06and they need to,
- 10:07work on that. And then one day a
- 10:09month for, you know, thirty minutes, they hear
- 10:11a status update on your big change management
- 10:13approach. So while you feel like you're over
- 10:15communicating
- 10:16and you should communicate until you feel like
- 10:18you're over communicating,
- 10:20the people that you're communicating to are oftentimes
- 10:22hearing what you're saying, you know, in in
- 10:24a in a sea of other information that's
- 10:26that's very noisy. So the biggest thing I
- 10:29would say is treat everything,
- 10:31when you're thinking about change management,
- 10:33and you're thinking about adopting a platform approach.
- 10:37Treat everything as a large scale transformation
- 10:40because it is, and
- 10:42communicate, communicate, communicate, communicate almost until you're sick
- 10:45of communicating your message. You know?
- 10:48It's a lot of great advice for for
- 10:50our listeners. So so thank you, Rob.
- 10:52If you were to look ahead into the
- 10:54future, how do you see innovation then continuing
- 10:57to unfold at health plans? What's exciting you
- 11:00right now, and how can our audience listen
- 11:04listening in? How can leaders prepare
- 11:07for this future state?
- 11:10I am incredibly
- 11:11excited
- 11:12about
- 11:13the concept of having data in a consistent
- 11:17data model and stored in in, you know,
- 11:19systems that you can understand
- 11:22the entire enterprise data portfolio.
- 11:25I think once you have that, there are
- 11:27tremendous amounts of things you can do from
- 11:29a business intelligence and and data intelligence perspective.
- 11:32And machine learning and AI are are, you
- 11:34know, two obviously,
- 11:37top of everyone's mind examples of that. But
- 11:40you can also just start thinking about efficiency
- 11:42and and monitoring customer journeys through the system.
- 11:46And for us in this industry where we
- 11:48have this, you know, mess of integrations with
- 11:51thousands of different tools that we and then
- 11:53systems and APIs and batch jobs and messaging.
- 11:56For us to be able to consolidate that
- 11:57data into a single platform where we can
- 11:59start making really, really intelligent
- 12:01decisions
- 12:02about about the businesses that we're running is
- 12:05really exciting. And I think it's not just
- 12:07us making intelligent decisions about the business that
- 12:09we're running, but it's pointing these ML and
- 12:11these AI tools
- 12:13at that data and then training those models
- 12:16and and, you know, asking these agents to
- 12:18to make,
- 12:19decisions about about that data too and and
- 12:22asking them for input and seeing patterns across
- 12:25massive amounts of data. It's just it's incredibly
- 12:28exciting concept given the amount of data that
- 12:30that payers and health plans have. And then
- 12:32I think if I I sort of play
- 12:34that out in my mind,
- 12:36you know, you can take that data and
- 12:38you can take that intelligence
- 12:40and, you know, combine that with cloud,
- 12:43this the infinite scalability of cloud, and you
- 12:46can start doing digital twins of that data
- 12:48and digital twins of the plans and and
- 12:50using that to to do what if modeling
- 12:52and and planning out different scenarios and saying
- 12:55if I change this this contract here or,
- 12:58you know, I change this plan line item
- 12:59here or this this, in our case, the
- 13:01health rules,
- 13:03you know, what impact would that have had
- 13:05over the last twelve months? Where do we
- 13:06think that's gonna go in the future? And
- 13:08you you can have tens
- 13:10of hundreds of or tens and hundreds of
- 13:12these digital twins of your business
- 13:14in the cloud that you're you're able to,
- 13:17to model different scenarios and different tweaks and
- 13:19different pieces of business efficiency and and different,
- 13:22things that are gonna have a real impact
- 13:24to your customer and their customer experience. And
- 13:25that's something that is just
- 13:27a vision that's almost unheard of right now
- 13:29where your data is everywhere.
- 13:32You have to, you know, cut a ticket
- 13:33to a a a business,
- 13:36analyst team or a business intelligence team. You
- 13:39know, they'll put the dashboard together or they'll
- 13:41put the report together. You know, you're looking
- 13:43at two, three week cycle times, sometimes at
- 13:46best.
- 13:47And then you finally get the data, and
- 13:49then you analyze it. You wrote something wrong.
- 13:50You have to go back. You know, there's
- 13:51this really long lead time on business intelligence
- 13:53right now. And I think as we start
- 13:55to consolidate data models and we start to
- 13:57consolidate our data infrastructure,
- 13:59we're gonna be able to, you know, get
- 14:01answers
- 14:02in in almost real time
- 14:04to very, very complex business scenario modeling, and
- 14:08that's gonna be incredibly powerful for for customers.
- 14:12Well, clearly, a lot of really exciting things
- 14:14on the horizon. So, Rob, I wanna thank
- 14:16you for taking the time to sit down
- 14:18with us and for sharing your insights with
- 14:20our listeners. We really appreciate it. Thank you.
- 14:23It's been a pleasure. I'd also like to
- 14:25thank our podcast sponsor, HealthEdge.
