Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: More on this resignation of the Deputy Police Commissioner Devin Mcskimming.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Sources have told The Herald that he quit after porn
- 0:06Speaker 1: was found on his work computer. This is before basically
- 0:09Speaker 1: he could be pushed. Lance Burdett is author and former
- 0:12Speaker 1: police officer with us this morning. Lance, good morning, ring right.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Are you shocked to hear that? Surprised to hear that?
- 0:18Speaker 2: I am very shocked. I don't know Jiven that well,
- 0:22Speaker 2: but I know of him. He was a high flyer,
- 0:26Speaker 2: a person that was very determined out of nowhere. You know,
- 0:31Speaker 2: You've got to remember that it's not the accessing of
- 0:34Speaker 2: the pornography or having it, it's that it's on a
- 0:37Speaker 2: police computer. And it's common knowledge that you know, viruses
- 0:41Speaker 2: and malware into computers from all sorts of unethical sites
- 0:45Speaker 2: where this gambling, gaming or restricted websites, and to be
- 0:49Speaker 2: doing that on a police computer is beyond me.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Yeah, this is alleged at this stage, obviously, but when confronted,
- 0:57Speaker 1: when confronted with what the Herald reporting is the cause
- 1:01Speaker 1: of this, he resigns. So yeah, now the criminal charge.
- 1:06Speaker 1: The interesting thing for me is that you've got, you know,
- 1:08Speaker 1: allegedly porn on a word computer. But then you've got
- 1:11Speaker 1: a separate criminal investigation going on, and yet you know
- 1:15Speaker 1: you keep your job during that.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Well, yeah, because they're obviously it's like any criminal investigation.
- 1:24Speaker 2: The idea is to get all the evidence there first
- 1:26Speaker 2: and then you speak with the person what they call
- 1:30Speaker 2: him personal interest. It's just I've never seen this before.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I've never It's none in my career and never happened
- 1:37Speaker 2: in I think my living memory where a senior police
- 1:41Speaker 2: officer has ever done anything like this and then having
- 1:46Speaker 2: been removed or you know, they're resigned before the investigations.
- 1:49Speaker 2: That's employment investigation. But now with this criminal investigation, I've
- 1:55Speaker 2: never heard of it, and I find it quite astounding,
- 1:57Speaker 2: to be honest, and I'm wondering what's behind it all
- 2:00Speaker 2: and what Like everybody else, do you figure out what
- 2:03Speaker 2: it is?
- 2:03Speaker 1: Do you think this is casting a long shadow over
- 2:06Speaker 1: the police? Do you think that the minister or the
- 2:09Speaker 1: commissioners should be more upfront about actually what's I mean,
- 2:12Speaker 1: obviously the criminal part you can't talk about. I get that,
- 2:14Speaker 1: But for the rest of it now, I mean, he's
- 2:16Speaker 1: left the building. Who can't just say what happened?
- 2:20Speaker 2: Unlessed I both linked and so there we have to be.
- 2:24Speaker 2: But you know the thing about I know the Commissioner
- 2:28Speaker 2: and also know the minister. They both have strong moral
- 2:31Speaker 2: and ethical codes and you've seen this with the with
- 2:34Speaker 2: the latest saga around the swim tests. So they both
- 2:38Speaker 2: are ensuring that police officers and police officers have to
- 2:42Speaker 2: be beyond approach. The higher they go up, the more
- 2:46Speaker 2: the higher expectation of them. And you know, as I say,
- 2:49Speaker 2: to get to them in the second top job and
- 2:53Speaker 2: then to have this happen to a person as I've
- 2:56Speaker 2: never seen it before. I can't even think in overseas
- 2:58Speaker 2: jurisdictions where it's happened befo or so. Yeah, they do
- 3:01Speaker 2: have to wait now for the rest of the investigation
- 3:04Speaker 2: to go through. He's no longer a police officer and
- 3:07Speaker 2: it does tarnish the rest of the service. But know
- 3:11Speaker 2: that I used to investigate police officers. We are tougher
- 3:16Speaker 2: on our own.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Appreciate your time, Lance, Thanks for that. Lance Burt, author
- 3:21Speaker 1: and form police officer on jivin mc skinning This morning,
- 3:23Speaker 1: just one seventeen. For more from early edition with Ryan Bridge,
