- 0:13If you were looking at job boards in Greater Oklahoma City back in December 2025,
- 0:19you might have thought the local economy had completely stalled out.
- 0:23Public online job postings showed zero percent year over year growth.
- 0:28Zero.
- 0:29Meanwhile, across the rest of the country, postings were up eight percent.
- 0:34So, on paper, it looked like a total freeze, right?
- 0:38But then you pull up the actual economic numbers from that exact same period,
- 0:43and the story completely flips on you.
- 0:46Unemployment in the region was averaging three point two percent,
- 0:49and at one point in the spring it dropped all the way down to two point four
- 0:53percent.
- 0:54Net nonfarm employment actually grew by six thousand six hundred jobs across the
- 0:59year.
- 1:01So what is happening here?
- 1:04Why are the public job boards completely flat while the actual labor market is so
- 1:09tight it is practically humming?
- 1:12Well, it turns out employers in OKC have largely abandoned posting on public boards
- 1:17because, frankly, when unemployment is sitting under three or four percent,
- 1:21the people you want to hire aren't scrolling through general job sites at midnight.
- 1:26They already have jobs.
- 1:28So companies are shifting their budget straight into direct recruitment,
- 1:32headhunting, and internal networking instead of throwing money at public job ads
- 1:36that just sit there.
- 1:38And look at the quality of the jobs being created.
- 1:42The Greater Oklahoma City Chamber backed one hundred and thirteen economic
- 1:46development deals that generated three thousand four hundred and six new jobs.
- 1:51And those jobs didn't just meet the baseline.
- 1:54They averaged an annual salary of sixty thousand seven hundred dollars.
- 1:59That is a massive wage floor for a region with this cost of living.
- 2:03You see physical proof of this confidence all over town, too.
- 2:08Non residential construction activity jumped twelve percent as companies built out
- 2:12new corporate footprint.
- 2:14Take PwC, for instance.
- 2:16Under Managing Partner Nate Rice, they set up a major move into a brand new Midtown
- 2:21office buildout slated for August 2026.
- 2:25Companies are not retreating.
- 2:26They are building real estate and paying sixty thousand seven hundred dollars on
- 2:31average to capture talent directly.
- 2:34Now, if you look at the pipeline coming down the track, the sheer scale of interest
- 2:39is wild.
- 2:41One hundred and twenty one companies were actively considering relocation or
- 2:46expansion in the region as of December 2025.
- 2:50Let me repeat that, because it is the central engine here.
- 2:54Exactly one hundred and twenty one companies were actively considering relocation or
- 2:59expansion in the region as of December 2025.
- 3:03And seventy percent of those active prospects are in advanced manufacturing.
- 3:08They want central United States distribution access, lower operating costs,
- 3:13and reliable logistics networks.
- 3:15But here is where the tension comes in.
- 3:18For 2026, Chamber projections show a much more cautious growth pace of point six
- 3:24percent, which translates to about four thousand five hundred net new jobs.
- 3:29That is a deliberate slowdown in velocity compared to previous years.
- 3:34The focus is shifting toward heavy infrastructure, capital investments,
- 3:38and MAPS 4 projects.
- 3:40And that brings us to the single biggest test facing the region right now.
- 3:45It is what I call the talent bottleneck.
- 3:48If you land a massive advanced manufacturing facility or an aerospace expansion,
- 3:54but you don't have the skilled technicians to staff the floor,
- 3:57those multi billion dollar investments sit underutilized.
- 4:02That is precisely why the local business community launched Forward OKC VII,
- 4:07making education and workforce pipeline alignment their primary flagship focus.
- 4:13They have to train local workers fast enough to keep pace with these high tech
- 4:17manufacturing requirements.
- 4:19If they pull it off, Oklahoma City locks in a high wage, resilient economy for the
- 4:24next decade.
- 4:26If they fall short, the pipeline stalls out.
- 4:29That is the real dynamic to watch as 2026 unfolds.
- 4:33Catch you next time.
