- 1:28Speaker 4: Lots to get to this morning. Coming up a little
- 1:29Speaker 4: bit later on, Tim Brady from the Charleston Convention of
- 1:32Speaker 4: Visitors Bureau will be joining us. What used to be
- 1:34Speaker 4: known as the Super six in Wheeling is now the
- 1:37Speaker 4: Super eight in Charleston, although legally I don't think you
- 1:39Speaker 4: can call it the Super A. It's the high school
- 1:41Speaker 4: football Championships presented by Toyota at Laidley Field, featuring the
- 1:45Speaker 4: first game of noon on Friday. Now, what does all
- 1:47Speaker 4: this have to do economically for the city of Charleston.
- 1:51Speaker 4: For the first time in what thirty years? You know,
- 1:53Speaker 4: we have the championships not in Wheeling, but in Charleston
- 1:55Speaker 4: Friday and Saturday. We're going to talk to Tim Brady
- 1:57Speaker 4: about that. Plus Charleston City councilan Emmitt Pepper is here.
- 2:00Speaker 4: We have several different things on the dogget to discuss
- 2:02Speaker 4: with Counselman Pepper coming up, But first I want to
- 2:05Speaker 4: bring in now the folks from Astorgato and the Charleston
- 2:07Speaker 4: Police Department. They are again this year tving up for
- 2:09Speaker 4: their annual toy drive. They will be collected new and
- 2:12Speaker 4: unwrapped toys tomorrow and Thursday at the Benny Keatam Shrine downtown.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Between eleven and seven, I had David Payne from Charleston
- 2:20Speaker 4: Police Department.
- 2:20Speaker 5: Dave, good morning, good morning, thanks for having us.
- 2:22Speaker 4: And I got Rob King from astorg How are you sir?
- 2:25Speaker 4: I'm gonna have you scoot. I know we're a little
- 2:27Speaker 4: cramped in here. It's not like the big studio was
- 2:29Speaker 4: a little And we also have a man John Brown.
- 2:31Speaker 4: How are you, buddy?
- 2:32Speaker 6: Going on?
- 2:32Speaker 4: I'm doing fine, Thank you all for being here. All right,
- 2:35Speaker 4: So Dave, I'll start with you, the Charleston Police Department
- 2:38Speaker 4: teaming up with Astorgatto for this next two days. I mean,
- 2:42Speaker 4: well it's tomorrow and Thursday, right.
- 2:44Speaker 7: Correct, Yes, we're excited now so that we are kicking
- 2:47Speaker 7: off our fifth annual CPD Wonderland Toy Drive. It'll start
- 2:49Speaker 7: Tomorrow and Thursday from eleven to seven and we'll be
- 2:55Speaker 7: there accepting toys for the kids.
- 2:57Speaker 4: How many years is the Charleston Police Department been doing that?
- 2:59Speaker 4: This is our fare and an astro god of Rob
- 3:03Speaker 4: King is here and John Brown Robers talk talk to
- 3:06Speaker 4: you about this. What does Astrogatto get out of this.
- 3:10Speaker 8: It's really just something that our owner four years ago
- 3:13Speaker 8: decided to get involved when Officer Cassie Johnson had been
- 3:18Speaker 8: killed and he wanted to do something for the police
- 3:21Speaker 8: department and the community. And each year we just like
- 3:25Speaker 8: to see it grow bigger and bigger. We started out
- 3:27Speaker 8: with around fifty kids and it was eight hundred last
- 3:30Speaker 8: year and now we have a goal well over one thousand.
- 3:33Speaker 4: And you guys just make it so easy to elect
- 3:35Speaker 4: these toys because I mean, you know, the and and
- 3:38Speaker 4: hats off in a big shout to the folks that
- 3:39Speaker 4: the many keep him shrine because they're wonderful to do
- 3:41Speaker 4: all kinds of different things in the community. But they've
- 3:44Speaker 4: got that wonderful facility there and you don't even have
- 3:46Speaker 4: to get out of your car. If I remember correctly
- 3:47Speaker 4: with them last year. You just kind of pull up
- 3:49Speaker 4: and drop them off, right.
- 3:49Speaker 5: Correct, just pull up.
- 3:51Speaker 7: Well, we'll have officers there to unload your packages for you,
- 3:54Speaker 7: but we really would like to see the kids come
- 3:56Speaker 7: also enjoy the bouncy houses that we'll have over there.
- 3:59Speaker 5: We'll have sad over there.
- 4:01Speaker 7: He arrives at noon tomorrow and he'll be coming at
- 4:03Speaker 7: five thirty on Thursday, and we'll have the kids from
- 4:06Speaker 7: the Discovery Center there tomorrow at noon to welcome Santa.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Now, what is a Discovery Center? Explain that for those
- 4:11Speaker 4: who don't know.
- 4:11Speaker 5: It's just a like a preschool downtown.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Okay, all right, so they're all gonna be there as well. John,
- 4:17Speaker 4: sub bring you in here for a moment.
- 4:19Speaker 9: Uh.
- 4:20Speaker 4: I know you love doing this sort of stuff, don't you,
- 4:22Speaker 4: a big guy?
- 4:22Speaker 6: Yes, it's uh, it's pretty cool, you know, to try
- 4:25Speaker 6: to give back to the community and help help the
- 4:27Speaker 6: Charleston Police out and.
- 4:30Speaker 5: Just just just giving back to kids.
- 4:31Speaker 6: That's unfortunate that that won't be having anything under the
- 4:35Speaker 6: Christmas tree, but.
- 4:37Speaker 4: You guys are gonna take care of that.
- 4:38Speaker 5: Yeah, we don't try to.
- 4:39Speaker 6: Yeah, So what he would put out there that we
- 4:41Speaker 6: need to try to fill the astrog out of Charleston
- 4:45Speaker 6: car holder.
- 4:46Speaker 5: So how long is it?
- 4:47Speaker 10: Rob About?
- 4:48Speaker 6: How long is the car holder? It's about thirty two foot.
- 4:51Speaker 6: So we got a lot of space to fill up
- 4:52Speaker 6: this year.
- 4:53Speaker 4: So you know how many toys that is? I guess
- 4:54Speaker 4: it all depends on what kind of toys they are.
- 4:56Speaker 4: But yeah, how many? How many? If you if you
- 4:58Speaker 4: look at the average I mean, so much smarter than
- 5:01Speaker 4: I am to do this, if you looked at the
- 5:02Speaker 4: average sized toy, all right, whatever that size may be,
- 5:06Speaker 4: how many toys would you have had to fill it up? Dave,
- 5:08Speaker 4: you're you're a numbers guy, I would say.
- 5:11Speaker 7: To fill that up. All that's a lot, but a
- 5:13Speaker 7: lot of a lot. Yeah, that's a lot, maybe fifteen
- 5:16Speaker 7: thousand or so toys. I mean it's yeah, it's a
- 5:19Speaker 7: big tall Yeah, yes, it's a long.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Yeah. With the bikes and stuff, might fill it up.
- 5:24Speaker 4: Okay, And now, and how do you get these to
- 5:26Speaker 4: the kids? What's that process?
- 5:27Speaker 7: Well, there's a there's an application process that we started
- 5:29Speaker 7: actually on Sunday, and we accept a two hundred and
- 5:32Speaker 7: fifty kids on Sunday. We had to close it down
- 5:34Speaker 7: depending on how many toys and donations we get on
- 5:37Speaker 7: our upcoming toy drive, will open it back up and
- 5:40Speaker 7: they'll apply and then next week what we'll do is
- 5:42Speaker 7: we'll go sort them, bag them, and the people that
- 5:45Speaker 7: applied will come and pick them up next week.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Okay again, we're talking about the Astorgado and Charleston Police
- 5:50Speaker 4: Department Annual toy driving next Wednesday and Thursday over at
- 5:53Speaker 4: the Benny Keaton Shrine. Remind you at the day Island
- 5:56Speaker 4: showing five. Any Life is brought to you a part

- 6:16Speaker 4: latest episodes wv metronews dot com at the podcast menu
- 6:20Speaker 4: and start your journey towards better health Today. Talk about
- 6:23Speaker 4: the involvement of the community and this we know what
- 6:25Speaker 4: Astorgato does and hats off to those folks that are
- 6:28Speaker 4: wonderful to give back to several things in the community
- 6:30Speaker 4: throughout the year, but talk about just the average folks day.
- 6:34Speaker 7: Well, I mean, we really couldn't pull this off without
- 6:36Speaker 7: the community. I mean, it's all through donations. We're just
- 6:39Speaker 7: the people that actually get to see the smiles on
- 6:41Speaker 7: the kid's face when they come pick up the toys.
- 6:42Speaker 7: But really, if it wasn't for the community coming to
- 6:45Speaker 7: help support.
- 6:46Speaker 5: Us, we couldn't pull this off at all.
- 6:47Speaker 7: Like I said, we served a little over eight hundred
- 6:49Speaker 7: children last year, and we're hoping to serve at least
- 6:52Speaker 7: a thousand this year hopefully.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Now, you guys and anybody can jump in here. All
- 6:56Speaker 4: three of you can have been doing this for some time.
- 6:58Speaker 4: You said that the fifth year the done this. I
- 7:01Speaker 4: don't want to go into details about an individual, obviously
- 7:04Speaker 4: a child's name or anything, but give me, give me
- 7:06Speaker 4: a grive me a great story any of you about
- 7:09Speaker 4: about one of the kids that you saw that really
- 7:12Speaker 4: their face lit up when they when they got their toy,
- 7:14Speaker 4: or or or some stories that you've heard maybe through
- 7:17Speaker 4: the process.
- 7:18Speaker 5: Just sure sure. I mean it's there's several kids.
- 7:21Speaker 7: I mean when they come even when the kids come
- 7:22Speaker 7: with their parents that pick up their toys. Of course
- 7:24Speaker 7: they're bagged up. They can't see what's in. Yeah, I
- 7:26Speaker 7: mean we have hundreds of kids that come over there
- 7:28Speaker 7: and they're just to see they're they're they're they're smiling
- 7:31Speaker 7: their faces, you know.
- 7:32Speaker 5: I mean, that's that that does it for us, you know.
- 7:33Speaker 7: I mean, so there's really not one story yeah stands
- 7:36Speaker 7: out because I'm sure they're all special.
- 7:38Speaker 4: You know, they all are. Again, we're talking about the
- 7:40Speaker 4: Charleston Police Department and the as Torgado Toy event which
- 7:43Speaker 4: is going to be at the Benny Keatam Shrine tomorrow
- 7:46Speaker 4: from eleven until and the next day two Thursday, from
- 7:48Speaker 4: eleven until seven. And again when you come out for
- 7:51Speaker 4: the event, guys, it's not just about the toys, like
- 7:53Speaker 4: you said, Like like Payne said, You've got the you
- 7:56Speaker 4: got bouncy houses, you got all kinds of cool stuff
- 7:58Speaker 4: going on over there.
- 8:00Speaker 7: Santa's there, say, they'll be there, be lit up with
- 8:03Speaker 7: our lights. So you see the blue lights flashing in
- 8:05Speaker 7: the in the corner over there, just drive up. Like
- 8:08Speaker 7: I said, we have officers on hand to take your
- 8:10Speaker 7: toys for you. We may even have a surprise gift
- 8:13Speaker 7: for our first one hundred people that drop off toys.
- 8:16Speaker 4: I think you did that last year, did first a
- 8:18Speaker 4: surprise gift for the first one hundred people? Right, Okay,
- 8:22Speaker 4: we don't. We're gonna keep it a surprise, right, Dave.
- 8:25Speaker 4: I want to talk to you because you're kind of
- 8:27Speaker 4: you know, you do so many things with the Charleston
- 8:28Speaker 4: Police Department. But one of the things that you do,
- 8:30Speaker 4: I don't know if it's on your business card or not,
- 8:32Speaker 4: is you're just you're you're kind of a community ambassador.
- 8:34Speaker 4: You know, you're always out out there in the community,
- 8:38Speaker 4: and sometimes you know, in our in our communities, the
- 8:42Speaker 4: people only see the police when it's a bad thing,
- 8:44Speaker 4: you know, when there's a crime that's been committed or whatever.
- 8:47Speaker 4: This is so important to have events for a police
- 8:50Speaker 4: department in the city like Charleston, to have events like
- 8:53Speaker 4: that when they see that you're that you're actually giving
- 8:55Speaker 4: back and that you're just trying to help.
- 8:56Speaker 7: Oh, for sure. I mean that's we look forward to
- 8:59Speaker 7: this really every year. All our officers look forward to this.
- 9:01Speaker 7: We actually have presents or gifts that we give our
- 9:04Speaker 7: officers and they take them out to their beats and
- 9:06Speaker 7: they actually go up to children and just random children
- 9:08Speaker 7: give them presents or knock on the door of a
- 9:11Speaker 7: residence they've made that they visited in the past, you
- 9:13Speaker 7: know what I mean, it may not have been so good,
- 9:15Speaker 7: so they have a gift to give them this time.
- 9:17Speaker 8: So that's my favorite thing about this is when the
- 9:20Speaker 8: officers go out if we have extra toys after the fact,
- 9:24Speaker 8: they drive around in one of the police trucks and
- 9:26Speaker 8: kids will be walking down the street and they'll pick
- 9:28Speaker 8: out a toy, or they'll go through different communities and
- 9:31Speaker 8: give out toys in the faces and the excitement is
- 9:34Speaker 8: just you can't get that.
- 9:36Speaker 10: It doesn't get any better indeed.
- 9:38Speaker 4: All right, so we got a lot of folks who
- 9:39Speaker 4: listen to the show that maybe are in the business community,
- 9:42Speaker 4: or maybe they're different time civic organizations or whatever. Put
- 9:46Speaker 4: out the final plea to them to help output this well.
- 9:49Speaker 7: Basically, you know, we don't want any kid to go
- 9:51Speaker 7: without a present on Christmas. So that's the really the
- 9:53Speaker 7: biggest thing here. They can go to our Facebook, our
- 9:56Speaker 7: Facebook page, we actually have a link there that they
- 9:58Speaker 7: can donate online if they can't make it to the
- 10:01Speaker 7: our toy drive. But really we're here for the kids.
- 10:04Speaker 7: We want to see every kid have a toy for Christmas.
- 10:07Speaker 4: That's the whole idea. And again the hours are from
- 10:09Speaker 4: eleven of seven at the many Keedom Shrine, one hundred
- 10:12Speaker 4: Quarriyor Street near the College Team of Convention Center. Your
- 10:14Speaker 4: gabs is going to be down there, Santa Claus is
- 10:16Speaker 4: going to be their bouncy houses and more.
- 10:17Speaker 6: John, if you got if you have any toys and
- 10:20Speaker 6: you can't make it out to the Winter One in
- 10:23Speaker 6: Land tomorrow and on Thursday, please reach out to me.
- 10:27Speaker 6: A Rob King at Astrok Auto of Charleston. We have
- 10:30Speaker 6: about thirty retired drivers at our dealership. You know they
- 10:33Speaker 6: would come to if you're in Beckley, Huntington and you
- 10:36Speaker 6: and you listen to the show and you just can't
- 10:38Speaker 6: get up here, just to donate toys or pick up
- 10:40Speaker 6: a check up.

- 11:00Speaker 8: dealership and we'll sun drivers or Donn or I will
- 11:03Speaker 8: come out and do anything we can to help with
- 11:06Speaker 8: the community.
- 11:07Speaker 4: All right, well, guys, we wish you the best of luck.

- 15:00Speaker 4: City of Charleston. This is coming Friday and Saturday. Want
- 15:03Speaker 4: to welcome and now.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Though the show.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Charleton City Councilman Emmitt Pepper, Good morning, sir.
- 15:07Speaker 5: Good morning. Thanks for having me on counsel.
- 15:10Speaker 4: Before we get into anything else, I do want to
- 15:12Speaker 4: give you an opportunity and I don't want to catch
- 15:14Speaker 4: you out of left field here, but I don't want
- 15:15Speaker 4: to give you an opportunity to do this because I
- 15:17Speaker 4: saw something that you posted on social media about the
- 15:20Speaker 4: death of former Supreme Court justice and Attorney General and
- 15:23Speaker 4: all around political icon Daryl McGraw. You had shared a
- 15:29Speaker 4: post on your social media about that. I hope I'm
- 15:31Speaker 4: not getting through personal here, but what would you like
- 15:33Speaker 4: to say about that?
- 15:34Speaker 9: Oh?
- 15:34Speaker 5: Yeah, and I did.
- 15:36Speaker 14: I have met him before, but I didn't know him
- 15:38Speaker 14: person or anything. But my dad worked your dad yeast
- 15:40Speaker 14: with him.
- 15:41Speaker 5: Yeah, he was.
- 15:41Speaker 14: He worked with with Judge McGraw when he was a
- 15:44Speaker 14: judge and and so that was when I was a
- 15:47Speaker 14: little baby. He was he was working there at the
- 15:48Speaker 14: at the UH at the in the Capitol. They were
- 15:51Speaker 14: working for Judge McGraw and had a great experience there.
- 15:53Speaker 14: And so you know, he's a he has an icon
- 15:55Speaker 14: or was an icon, and and I think he had
- 15:57Speaker 14: made a really big positive impact on the state.
- 16:00Speaker 4: I mean, he did, and he will certainly be missed.
- 16:01Speaker 4: And I said yesterday when I had Mike Pushkin on
- 16:05Speaker 4: the show, I said, I think when they write the
- 16:06Speaker 4: book about West Virginia political figures over the years, you
- 16:11Speaker 4: know you're gonna you're gonna talk about Robert Byrd, You're
- 16:13Speaker 4: going to talk about the McGraw brothers. You're going to
- 16:15Speaker 4: talk about Arch More and and Jay Rockefeller and so
- 16:19Speaker 4: many of these other these just these I guess, these
- 16:22Speaker 4: these larger than life characters. I guess, I guess.
- 16:25Speaker 5: Yeah, it's definitely like a storybook sometimes.
- 16:28Speaker 4: All right, So you spent a lot of time and
- 16:30Speaker 4: you have on this show in the past talking about
- 16:33Speaker 4: rate increases.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Uh, with the with the power company.
- 16:36Speaker 4: Where do you want to go with this?
- 16:37Speaker 14: Yeah, well, so folks probably remember several months back there
- 16:41Speaker 14: was a really big rate increase proposed by I'm almost
- 16:44Speaker 14: thirty dollars a month for MOSTO for most residential customers.
- 16:48Speaker 5: Uh.
- 16:48Speaker 14: So that got dismissed due to a technical issue. Essentially,
- 16:52Speaker 14: you had a son. I appreciate you doing that that's
- 16:55Speaker 14: been reintroduced, resubmitted, So there's it's it's a little bit less,
- 17:00Speaker 14: but it's still pretty significant. Twenty almost twenty four dollars
- 17:03Speaker 14: a month rate increase from the twenty nine then it
- 17:08Speaker 14: was before. And so this is this is called a
- 17:11Speaker 14: base rate. So this is these cases last for some time.
- 17:15Speaker 14: It will be in this next summer before this will
- 17:17Speaker 14: be final. But you know, we're looking very closely at
- 17:21Speaker 14: we've intervened in the case. They've also taught the companies
- 17:26Speaker 14: have really talked up a proposal to kind of spread
- 17:29Speaker 14: out the rate increase over a twenty year period and
- 17:33Speaker 14: so that that may end up being some some cost
- 17:37Speaker 14: savings for folks. We don't know exactly how much yet
- 17:41Speaker 14: because the way they're proposing they do that is they
- 17:44Speaker 14: have a separate case for part of the rate increase.
- 17:47Speaker 5: That would come up in you know, next month, a
- 17:49Speaker 5: couple of months.
- 17:50Speaker 4: So what do you hear from I mean, I know
- 17:53Speaker 4: you have a lot of different hats in your life,
- 17:55Speaker 4: but I'm gonna ask you from a city councilman perspective
- 17:57Speaker 4: on this one, what do you hear from your constituents
- 17:59Speaker 4: out there? By I mean nobody likes to pay it. Obviously,
- 18:01Speaker 4: I completely understand that, because you're, in addition to being
- 18:04Speaker 4: a council when you're also a consumer of power. We
- 18:07Speaker 4: all are. But what do you hear when talking to
- 18:09Speaker 4: people out there?
- 18:10Speaker 14: Yeah, I mean people are frustrated the rates just keep
- 18:12Speaker 14: going up. It's uh, it's it's very Uh it's gotten
- 18:16Speaker 14: a lot more expensive. They've more than doubled in the
- 18:18Speaker 14: last fifteen years, uh here in in this area for
- 18:22Speaker 14: Apple Watching power customers. So it's it's been a significant increase.
- 18:26Speaker 14: For folks who are have limited incomes, living on fixed incomes,
- 18:29Speaker 14: it's it's a it's a challenge. It's a real challenge.
- 18:32Speaker 14: And of course, you know, uh, food's going up to
- 18:35Speaker 14: and there's a lot of other things that have that
- 18:36Speaker 14: have gone Uh. Costs have gone up, but I don't
- 18:39Speaker 14: think much has gone up quite as much as our
- 18:41Speaker 14: electric rates.
- 18:43Speaker 4: So let me play Devil's advocate here for a moment. Okay,
- 18:46Speaker 4: it's the it's just the price. It's the cost of
- 18:48Speaker 4: the price of doing business, you know, I mean, it's
- 18:50Speaker 4: costing them more.
- 18:52Speaker 15: Uh.
- 18:52Speaker 4: And whether it's you know, the power company, whether it's water,
- 18:55Speaker 4: whether it's gas, whatever, utility we're talking about, it costs
- 18:57Speaker 4: them more to do business, so they have to pass
- 19:00Speaker 4: those expenses onto someone.
- 19:02Speaker 14: Your your comment to that, Yeah, So so what we
- 19:05Speaker 14: our system is as a regulated monopoly, right, so we
- 19:07Speaker 14: in exchange for getting having a monopoly where they're the
- 19:10Speaker 14: only option that we have. What what we what happens
- 19:14Speaker 14: is that the Public Service Commission and people like my
- 19:18Speaker 14: clients are lots of different people can can weigh in
- 19:21Speaker 14: and have experts and look in and to see whether
- 19:23Speaker 14: these rates are really reasonable.
- 19:25Speaker 5: And so that's that's the system that we have.
- 19:28Speaker 14: And our issue is that, you know, our rates have
- 19:30Speaker 14: gone up so much, we believe because the there's a
- 19:34Speaker 14: lot of expensive power plants that we operate, that our
- 19:37Speaker 14: utility operates, and instead of using the free market to
- 19:41Speaker 14: buy their power, they're paying themselves to run those power plants.
- 19:44Speaker 14: So and those the power plants are not running as
- 19:47Speaker 14: cost competitive as you know other ones that could could
- 19:51Speaker 14: be using the free market for and so that that's
- 19:54Speaker 14: one of our major issues. And you know, as I mentioned,
- 19:57Speaker 14: this is a system where it's a regulator. We and
- 20:00Speaker 14: push and pull and look at it, and there's oversight
- 20:02Speaker 14: by the Public Service Commission one of the proposals in
- 20:05Speaker 14: this in this rate increase is that they would just
- 20:08Speaker 14: be they call it a race stabilization surcharge, where they
- 20:12Speaker 14: would be able to just increase rates three percent a
- 20:14Speaker 14: year with essentially no over saying at all. And so
- 20:18Speaker 14: that and I think that you know their spin on
- 20:21Speaker 14: it is that you know this is going to be
- 20:22Speaker 14: something that will be you know, that way that we
- 20:25Speaker 14: don't have the big bumps, and there's a lot of
- 20:27Speaker 14: rate increases every year, which is what happens. It's been
- 20:30Speaker 14: three two to three four different cases every year. The
- 20:34Speaker 14: race don't seem to go down too much. And so
- 20:38Speaker 14: that's another concern we have in this proposal.
- 20:40Speaker 4: Talking to him with Charleston City Councilman Emmitt Pepper, the
- 20:42Speaker 4: Dave Allen Chilling five eighty line brought to you apart
- 20:44Speaker 4: by Pinnacle Consultants. Pinnacle offers eight offers a four phase
- 20:48Speaker 4: assessment for your properties, inspection, sampling and analysis, comprehensive reporting
- 20:52Speaker 4: and management planning. Visit Pinnacle Corp dot net because what
- 20:54Speaker 4: you don't know can hurt you. So before we move
- 20:57Speaker 4: on to some other things, I got a few other
- 20:58Speaker 4: things I want to talk to you about. Where do
- 21:00Speaker 4: we go from here on this? And you kind of
- 21:01Speaker 4: mentioned the beginning of the interview, what's what's the next
- 21:03Speaker 4: step in this counciling.
- 21:05Speaker 14: Yeah, yeah, so there's going to be so we have
- 21:06Speaker 14: a I'm part of a coalition called West Virginia's for
- 21:08Speaker 14: Energy Freedom, So people go to Energy Freedom wv't out
- 21:11Speaker 14: or they can engage in that. We're going to probably
- 21:13Speaker 14: we're still kind of reading through it, but but I
- 21:16Speaker 14: think we're pretty close to the point where we're going
- 21:18Speaker 14: to have an ability for people to weigh in and
- 21:21Speaker 14: make their voice heard at the Public Service Commission. That
- 21:24Speaker 14: the last one little issue, that big issue that we're
- 21:26Speaker 14: concerned with is there's also a proposal to make it
- 21:29Speaker 14: much harder to go a solar in this So if
- 21:31Speaker 14: you want to do something about your bills by going solar,
- 21:35Speaker 14: that becomes harder too.
- 21:36Speaker 5: We can We'll have more information about that online.
- 21:38Speaker 1: All right.
- 21:39Speaker 4: So I want to move on to a couple other things.
- 21:40Speaker 4: Number One, I know you're heavily involved in something with
- 21:44Speaker 4: the First Presbyterian Church here in Charleston, and they did
- 21:46Speaker 4: a Hope Village talk about that a little bit, because
- 21:49Speaker 4: it's is it over?
- 21:49Speaker 16: It is over?
- 21:50Speaker 4: But talk about it anyway.
- 21:52Speaker 14: Yeah, yeah, So first, I mean, I'm not I'm not
- 21:54Speaker 14: really that involved, but but I do go there and
- 21:58Speaker 14: and it's a really cool thing folk, cause should check
- 22:00Speaker 14: it out next year. It's not a fundraiser for the church,
- 22:04Speaker 14: but what it is is it's a it's a way
- 22:06Speaker 14: for they want to part of the mission of the
- 22:08Speaker 14: church is to help support folks around the world who
- 22:11Speaker 14: are struggling, and so they they purchased food or different
- 22:15Speaker 14: gift items, and there's some food and coffee. Actually you
- 22:18Speaker 14: can go all year around and get fair trade coffee,
- 22:21Speaker 14: a fair trade olive oil and stuff like that, and
- 22:24Speaker 14: so this is a way if they kind of broaden
- 22:26Speaker 14: that and have every you know, I think it was
- 22:29Speaker 14: three or four weekends out of the year leading up
- 22:32Speaker 14: to Thanksgiving where you know, people can come and buy stuff.
- 22:36Speaker 14: And it supports small farmers, small businesses from around the
- 22:40Speaker 14: world on places that are struggling, a lot of war
- 22:42Speaker 14: torn areas and.
- 22:43Speaker 5: Things like that.
- 22:43Speaker 14: And actually some of the places that they use were
- 22:46Speaker 14: actually were they provide services for folks overseas, but they're
- 22:51Speaker 14: based on areas that got hit really heard by Hurricane Helene.
- 22:54Speaker 14: So it was actually helping those entities as well. So anyway,
- 22:57Speaker 14: it was a really cool thing.
- 22:59Speaker 4: She put folks who check that out and we're talking
- 23:01Speaker 4: about it after the fact. And that's but because you
- 23:03Speaker 4: had reached out to me about it, and I just
- 23:05Speaker 4: we just we couldn't get our schedule. It was election
- 23:07Speaker 4: time and I get that to get you on, but
- 23:10Speaker 4: I wanted to give an opportunity to talk about it
- 23:11Speaker 4: as we move into next year. Countsman, I spent a
- 23:15Speaker 4: little time last week talking about the proposed panhandling ordinance
- 23:19Speaker 4: here in Charleston. Now I understand it has gone to committee.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Now I had Countsman Chad Robinson on the show to
- 23:24Speaker 4: talk about it last week. Mayor Goodwin was also on
- 23:26Speaker 4: the show last week talking about it. Do you care
- 23:28Speaker 4: to I mean, where are you.
- 23:30Speaker 2: On all this?
- 23:31Speaker 5: Well, a couple of things.
- 23:32Speaker 14: I mean, so one, I don't think this had happened
- 23:34Speaker 14: when you had Chairman Robinson on last week or the mayor.
- 23:39Speaker 14: There's a lawsuit was filed in against mon County who
- 23:44Speaker 14: had a similar ordinances. I think both of them talked
- 23:46Speaker 14: about last week, and so you know, from my perspective,
- 23:52Speaker 14: you know, just I'm no expert on first Amendment law
- 23:56Speaker 14: or anything.
- 23:56Speaker 5: But my reader, it is this.
- 23:59Speaker 14: There's some First Amendment challenges there that might be you know,
- 24:02Speaker 14: it is someone's right to be able to ask somebody
- 24:04Speaker 14: for money. But so I think what we'll you know,
- 24:08Speaker 14: my guess is that my strong inclination would be to
- 24:12Speaker 14: just wait and see how the lawsuit plays out. But
- 24:15Speaker 14: you know, I know that the chairman and the mayor
- 24:18Speaker 14: are both very you know, committed to taking the time
- 24:21Speaker 14: thinking it through. Let's let's think about all that different options.
- 24:24Speaker 14: How do we do this in the way that's you know,
- 24:27Speaker 14: protective of people's rights but also protective of everybody else's safety.
- 24:31Speaker 4: And I mentioned this on the show before, and it's
- 24:33Speaker 4: a very good point on your behalf there that when
- 24:35Speaker 4: this has gone not only in West Virginia but across
- 24:37Speaker 4: the country. You know, the frequently these laws, although maybe
- 24:42Speaker 4: they're well intentioned, are are stricken down on First Amendment issues. However,
- 24:46Speaker 4: it looks like this time around, what they're doing is
- 24:48Speaker 4: they're trying to take it from a safety perspective, and
- 24:52Speaker 4: that they're trying to say, okay, well, it's not about
- 24:54Speaker 4: the person stopping you on the street and asking you
- 24:57Speaker 4: for for change or whatever. It's about people standing in
- 25:01Speaker 4: right of ways, it's about people standing next to highways
- 25:04Speaker 4: and things of that nature. And it wouldn't only involved
- 25:06Speaker 4: what you what you think of of just somebody asking
- 25:08Speaker 4: you for spare change. This could involve political figures standing
- 25:12Speaker 4: and holding signs up. You're a political figure, so you
- 25:16Speaker 4: may not be able to stand up.
- 25:17Speaker 14: I've been known to stand at the foot of the
- 25:19Speaker 14: south side of bridge, which I think every you know,
- 25:21Speaker 14: look at every.
- 25:22Speaker 4: And it could also have It could also get into
- 25:26Speaker 4: those holding up a sign that says you know car washed,
- 25:29Speaker 4: that you know the auto parts store straight ahead or
- 25:31Speaker 4: or whatever. I mean, there's a lot of different things
- 25:34Speaker 4: that could possibly yeah, play.
- 25:36Speaker 14: Everybody's you know, the people who are proposing it are
- 25:39Speaker 14: saying it is about panhandling, so yeah, I mean it'll
- 25:42Speaker 14: be interesting to see, you know, smarter people than myself,
- 25:45Speaker 14: judge clear up in the Northern District will be looking
- 25:47Speaker 14: at this and the similar law up there. And you know,
- 25:50Speaker 14: I think it would be problematic or expensive for us
- 25:54Speaker 14: and not good use of taxpayer money to go into
- 25:57Speaker 14: this while there's an opending lossuit.
- 25:59Speaker 4: All right, what else is on your plate? What else
- 26:00Speaker 4: you're looking at? As we close out the year, the
- 26:02Speaker 4: time is yours. What else as a city Counciloran or
- 26:04Speaker 4: anything else you want to talk about him?
- 26:06Speaker 2: It?
- 26:06Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I.
- 26:07Speaker 5: Mean I think that.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Well.
- 26:09Speaker 14: One thing that's that's going on in my life is
- 26:11Speaker 14: that there's been a lot of movement. I've been able
- 26:14Speaker 14: to help a lot of people in my private practice
- 26:16Speaker 14: with student loan debt. There I've already gotten rid of
- 26:20Speaker 14: one hundred and fifty thousand dollars worth of people's student
- 26:22Speaker 14: lown debt through a bankruptcy process. And it's a it's
- 26:25Speaker 14: a it's an area of a lot of people think
- 26:26Speaker 14: that you can't bankrupt student loans, but it's it's been
- 26:28Speaker 14: helping out a lot of people, and people are struggling
- 26:31Speaker 14: with student loans and it's gotten i mean from when
- 26:32Speaker 14: you and I were in college, it's gotten to be
- 26:34Speaker 14: a lot worse.
- 26:35Speaker 4: It's it's you can't look I'm one of those people.
- 26:37Speaker 4: I'm a kid of the I went to college in
- 26:40Speaker 4: the started in the late eighties and through the early nineties,
- 26:43Speaker 4: and I can easily say, you know, I can I
- 26:45Speaker 4: can be that guy, which I frequently am on the
- 26:47Speaker 4: show counsel on you know, somebody that looks back goes
- 26:49Speaker 4: well in my day. To be fair, it's not the
- 26:52Speaker 4: same world. It's not the same and I need to
- 26:55Speaker 4: do a better job of that as saying, you know,
- 26:57Speaker 4: when I went to college in nineteen eighty eight, it's
- 26:59Speaker 4: not the same that that people that are looking at
- 27:02Speaker 4: these student loan debts from twenty fourteen twenty fifteen went through.
- 27:06Speaker 4: It's it's a totally different What's what's the percentage that
- 27:08Speaker 4: it's that the rates of race since then.
- 27:10Speaker 14: In many cases, I don't know this percentage of the
- 27:13Speaker 14: rates off the top of my head, but I know that,
- 27:15Speaker 14: you know, the student un debt has ballooned in the past,
- 27:17Speaker 14: you know, decade or two, and so you know, I've
- 27:20Speaker 14: had people come in, who's seventy year old guy, Actually
- 27:23Speaker 14: he was going to school in the late nineties and
- 27:25Speaker 14: early two thousands, and he still has student on debt
- 27:29Speaker 14: from a significant amount of it from from way back then.
- 27:32Speaker 5: And and so these are people who you know, when
- 27:35Speaker 5: does it end?
- 27:36Speaker 12: You know?
- 27:36Speaker 5: And so we're able to help people with that, which
- 27:38Speaker 5: is great.
- 27:39Speaker 4: All right, Well, keep doing good things in city council.
- 27:42Speaker 4: I know that, you know, Charleston has such a large
- 27:44Speaker 4: city council, and you've got a variety of different voices,
- 27:47Speaker 4: and you stand up for different areas and some are
- 27:50Speaker 4: at large, and you know you're working with the mayor
- 27:52Speaker 4: and so on and so forth. But I think that
- 27:53Speaker 4: the overall, I think there's a lot of exciting things
- 27:55Speaker 4: going on in Charleston, and I know as we head
- 27:57Speaker 4: into twenty twenty five, you're going to continue to see
- 27:59Speaker 4: the as well. Councilman Emmitt Pepper is always a pleasure
- 28:03Speaker 4: to have you on the show. And if I don't
- 28:04Speaker 4: talk to you before the holiday season, very happy happy
- 28:07Speaker 4: holidays to you and your family, you too, all right,

- 31:17Speaker 4: Mars show, State Senator Glen Jefferies is going to join us.
- 31:19Speaker 4: There's been a lot of talk about economic development here
- 31:22Speaker 4: as of late in West Virginia and some things that
- 31:23Speaker 4: were supposed to happen with the special session, well there
- 31:27Speaker 4: ended up not being a special session. It was just interims.
- 31:29Speaker 4: I don'tant to see just interims because interims are continuing today.
- 31:33Speaker 4: But I'm going to talk to Sindra Glen Jeffries about
- 31:35Speaker 4: some things along that along that line of thinking when
- 31:40Speaker 4: it comes to economic development, things of that nature. He'll
- 31:42Speaker 4: be on the show tomorrow. Plus Jay Silverman's going to
- 31:44Speaker 4: be here now. Like a lot of us, Jay wears
- 31:46Speaker 4: a lot of hats. He's of course with the Charleston
- 31:49Speaker 4: Dirty Birds as they continue with the Selango Law Light
- 31:51Speaker 4: the Night Over at Gomart Ballpark. He's also got this
- 31:54Speaker 4: YouTube channel, have Fun where as best I've been able
- 31:57Speaker 4: to ascertain, he drives all over West Virginia and eats
- 31:59Speaker 4: things pretty cool gig if you can get it. A
- 32:02Speaker 4: Jay is also a part of a worldwide organization that
- 32:04Speaker 4: does a lot of good for people, and that is
- 32:07Speaker 4: the Moose Organization. We're going to talk to Jay about
- 32:09Speaker 4: that coming up on the show tomorrow, plus Connawk Countychemissy
- 32:12Speaker 4: Benceulango will be stopping by as well. This Friday and Saturday.
- 32:17Speaker 4: The eyes of the sports world in West Virginia and
- 32:19Speaker 4: maybe maybe we could take the focus off the change
- 32:22Speaker 4: in the football coaches in both Morgantown and Huntington. We
- 32:25Speaker 4: can focus on the field and also not in the
- 32:27Speaker 4: courtroom to talk about. Well, you used to be known
- 32:29Speaker 4: as the Super six. Now it's This is the high
- 32:30Speaker 4: school football state title games for years in Wheelings starting
- 32:34Speaker 4: Friday continuing into Saturday, championships are back in Charleston. Tim
- 32:38Speaker 4: Brady's with the Charleston Convention of Visitors Bureau, and he
- 32:40Speaker 4: joined us now to talk about Tim. Good morning, welcome
- 32:42Speaker 4: to the show.
- 32:42Speaker 5: Thanks for having me, Dave. Always a pleasure to be here, brother.
- 32:45Speaker 4: And so after a week or so delay in the courts,
- 32:49Speaker 4: we finally got it worked out. We're ready to play football.
- 32:51Speaker 4: First game Friday at noon. I've seen and I've heard
- 32:55Speaker 4: some of your other interviews with Fred and different people
- 32:57Speaker 4: about this, but talk about that delay process, what that
- 32:59Speaker 4: was like through no fault of your own, obviously, you
- 33:01Speaker 4: know when you had that delay in the court system
- 33:04Speaker 4: and you're like, Okay, what are we going to do here?
- 33:06Speaker 4: Luckily we got it worked out. Didn't cause too big
- 33:08Speaker 4: We're prob. But talk about that from the city's perspective.
- 33:12Speaker 4: Let's let's just kind of get into that.
- 33:13Speaker 5: Sure. So first and foremost, I'm glad you said there's
- 33:17Speaker 5: certainly nothing, nothing that had nothing to do with it.
- 33:20Speaker 5: It would have had still would have been delayed a week. Now,
- 33:24Speaker 5: here's what I will say. The one week delay in
- 33:28Speaker 5: hosting the West Virginia State High School Football Championships presented
- 33:32Speaker 5: by Toyota that's the official name that's the official name.
- 33:34Speaker 5: Had to work that in, just like a good NASCAR driver.
- 33:36Speaker 5: I had to get my plugs in, you know. To
- 33:40Speaker 5: be honest, David, it really didn't impact us that much.
- 33:44Speaker 5: It the field was still available, you know, the the hotels.
- 33:49Speaker 5: The one issue that we bumped into, and we really
- 33:52Speaker 5: got this put to bed yesterday was hotel rooms because
- 33:55Speaker 5: now the state high school Football Championships, presented by Toyota,
- 33:59Speaker 5: are being at the same time as the West Virginia
- 34:02Speaker 5: State High School Cheer Championships taking place this Saturday at
- 34:07Speaker 5: the Charleston Coliseum. So you had cheer rooms that were
- 34:10Speaker 5: booked months ago, and we had a full plan laid
- 34:14Speaker 5: out for where teams that qualified for football housing would
- 34:17Speaker 5: be placed had it happened last weekend. We had to
- 34:20Speaker 5: kind of mix and match and move some puzzle pieces
- 34:23Speaker 5: around throughout the day yesterday to make sure that all
- 34:25Speaker 5: the teams that needed rooms had the rooms that they needed.
- 34:28Speaker 5: So once we got that worked out, it was really
- 34:30Speaker 5: just taking the plans from the initial week and translating
- 34:33Speaker 5: everything to the following week. So for us, logistically, aside
- 34:37Speaker 5: from hotel rooms, it wasn't that big of a deal.
- 34:40Speaker 4: Talk about the process of getting the championships here because
- 34:44Speaker 4: then Wheeling for so many years. Yep, and they're back
- 34:49Speaker 4: in Charleston talk about how that whole process.
- 34:52Speaker 5: So, yeah, they had been in Wheeling for thirty years.
- 34:56Speaker 5: And I'm going to say from jump and I hope,
- 35:00Speaker 5: hope that folks from from Wheeling. I've said this many
- 35:03Speaker 5: times and I want to make sure that I that
- 35:05Speaker 5: I stress it. Wheeling did a fantastic job with this
- 35:09Speaker 5: with this event in a lot of ways, they really
- 35:12Speaker 5: created the template and set the bar for what the
- 35:15Speaker 5: expectation was from a host committee for this event. Wheeling
- 35:19Speaker 5: did an outstanding job with it. However, the wvs SAC
- 35:24Speaker 5: decided to put the the championships out to bid, and
- 35:28Speaker 5: there were I believe four bid presentations from host cities,
- 35:34Speaker 5: actually four bids, five cities. Charleston bid and one Wheeling
- 35:39Speaker 5: bid on the event. Bluefield also bid on the event,
- 35:42Speaker 5: and then there was a combined bid from Morgantown and
- 35:46Speaker 5: Huntington that would have split the game every other year
- 35:51Speaker 5: between WVU and Marshall. So there were four bids and
- 35:55Speaker 5: we put together what we thought was a competitive bid
- 35:57Speaker 5: and we went into the bid process and and won it.
- 36:00Speaker 5: So everyone had the opportunity to present. There were site
- 36:03Speaker 5: visits by the WVSSEEC staff and some of their board
- 36:07Speaker 5: members to all of the facilities, and through the process
- 36:11Speaker 5: we walked away having won the event for the next
- 36:14Speaker 5: three years with the mutual option for the fourth.
- 36:17Speaker 4: So when people come out to these and it's kind
- 36:19Speaker 4: of an interesting if you look at the teams that
- 36:21Speaker 4: are in this you have some teams from our listening area,
- 36:26Speaker 4: the Charles Jerry of course, you got Herbert Hoover, and
- 36:29Speaker 4: you know we've got Rohan County. We talked about them
- 36:31Speaker 4: during the break. But then you've got some schools coming
- 36:33Speaker 4: down that are not so close to here. You're stomping
- 36:36Speaker 4: grounds up in Bridgeport and the two schools that I
- 36:39Speaker 4: think are like fifteen miles apart over in the Eastern Panhandle,
- 36:43Speaker 4: but they're going to pack up buses and come down
- 36:44Speaker 4: here to play the game.
- 36:46Speaker 5: And that happened did in the past as well. Yeah,
- 36:48Speaker 5: I just think because I used to and Fred jokes
- 36:50Speaker 5: with me. Fred Persinger jokes with me all the time.
- 36:52Speaker 5: I used to red hat the Super six when it
- 36:55Speaker 5: was in Wheeling for years, worked on the sidelines and
- 36:58Speaker 5: was the radio and TV time I'm out coordinator working
- 37:01Speaker 5: with the with the referees, and I distinctly remember Triple
- 37:05Speaker 5: A championship games between Capitol in South Charlestown where they
- 37:09Speaker 5: would load the buses and go to Wheeling. So the
- 37:11Speaker 5: goal of the host committee and to that point is
- 37:14Speaker 5: to make it like a bowl game. So even if
- 37:16Speaker 5: you are local, it is still special.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Uh.
- 37:18Speaker 5: And I'll talk more about that in a minute, but
- 37:20Speaker 5: when you talk about the schools that are coming in,
- 37:22Speaker 5: you know, it's really exciting to get a team like
- 37:24Speaker 5: Cameron that's never played in the state championship before. So
- 37:27Speaker 5: Cameron's coming, They're excited. They're coming down for two days.
- 37:30Speaker 5: Cameron's a cool story because they play on Friday at noon.
- 37:34Speaker 5: Their cheerleaders compete on Saturday at the coliseum in the
- 37:38Speaker 5: State Cheer Championship. So their football team is staying an
- 37:41Speaker 5: extra night on their own dimes so that their football
- 37:44Speaker 5: players can be at the coliseum on Saturday stuff to
- 37:47Speaker 5: cheer on their their classmates and their and their their cheerleaders.
- 37:51Speaker 5: So you know that's cool. So you've got Cameron and Muhamma,
- 37:54Speaker 5: You've got Double A. Rohan County has never been there.
- 37:56Speaker 5: Spencer High School way back in the day, had but
- 37:59Speaker 5: Rohan County High School never been there. Taking on a
- 38:02Speaker 5: very good, very good, very motivated Frankfurt team Triple A,
- 38:05Speaker 5: I think is to me the most intriguing matchup. And
- 38:07Speaker 5: I'm trying to keep those, by the way, Dave, trying
- 38:09Speaker 5: to keep those Bridgeport ties.
- 38:11Speaker 4: On the d l okay.
- 38:12Speaker 5: You know, I don't want the Hoover folks knowing that
- 38:15Speaker 5: I have those old Bridgeport times.
- 38:16Speaker 4: Tam Brady is from Bridgeport to Bridgeport, Texas's Bridgeport, Texas.
- 38:20Speaker 5: Bridgeport, Connecticut. Yeah, I did Bridgeport High School football on
- 38:24Speaker 5: the radio for over a decade before I moved to Charleston.
- 38:27Speaker 5: That's a very good football team. This Hoover team is
- 38:29Speaker 5: really good too. That's gonna be a great matchup. Yeah,
- 38:31Speaker 5: and Hoover. I think the best crowd of the weekend,
- 38:35Speaker 5: my guess is gonna be on Saturday at noon when
- 38:38Speaker 5: Hoover plays Bridgeport, because I think everybody from the Elk
- 38:41Speaker 5: River is going to be in Charlestown at Ladleyfield. And
- 38:44Speaker 5: then we've got that other matchup, the one that you
- 38:46Speaker 5: talked about. Two schools fifteen miles apart, Spring Millsen and
- 38:49Speaker 5: Martinsburg and they played earlier in the year. It's a
- 38:51Speaker 5: really good game. So we're expecting for really good games.
- 38:54Speaker 5: But when the teams show up, you know, again making
- 38:56Speaker 5: it more like a bowl game. The teams that want
- 39:00Speaker 5: team meals, we're providing team meals. Some of the hotels
- 39:04Speaker 5: are hosting team meals. Buffalo Wild Wings is hosting a
- 39:07Speaker 5: team meal. The Eagles Nest at Little Creek Country Club
- 39:10Speaker 5: is hosting a team meal for us. So the teams travel,
- 39:13Speaker 5: Herbert Hoover is going to take their whole team to
- 39:16Speaker 5: uh Solango Law light the night at Gomart Ballpark on
- 39:20Speaker 5: Thursday evening and enjoy that as a team. And then
- 39:23Speaker 5: when the teams show up, they drop their equipment off
- 39:26Speaker 5: before the game day, all of their uniforms, their helmets
- 39:30Speaker 5: will be shined, their shoes will be shined, their lockers
- 39:33Speaker 5: will be hung. We're we're making it like a true
- 39:35Speaker 5: bowl game environment. When the teams walk into their locker room,
- 39:38Speaker 5: there's a there's a sense of arrival. It's a championship
- 39:41Speaker 5: atmosphere for the teams. So even though those two schools
- 39:43Speaker 5: from the Eastern Panhandle are very familiar with each other
- 39:46Speaker 5: and close together, they show up here and it's really
- 39:49Speaker 5: it's a bowl game atmosphere for them.
- 39:51Speaker 4: Totally different environment. The Dave Islands showing five any live

- 40:12Speaker 4: brought up to me something the other day about parking. Yep,
- 40:15Speaker 4: because you know we are at lately and a lot
- 40:18Speaker 4: of state employees this I'm talking about Friday now, Friday
- 40:20Speaker 4: at noon, a lot of state employees, Uh use that facility.
- 40:24Speaker 18: What are you?
- 40:24Speaker 5: What are we looking at? Here's for as parking gohoes team.
- 40:27Speaker 5: So Friday at noon is really our one parking challenge.
- 40:31Speaker 5: You know, anybody from the state that wants to take
- 40:33Speaker 5: the day off, I would encourage them, But no, there
- 40:37Speaker 5: is there there's still there's still Laidley Field Parking. Uh,
- 40:41Speaker 5: there is on Street parking in the neighborhoods around UH.
- 40:44Speaker 5: Lately there's also UH parking on Washington Street and down
- 40:51Speaker 5: toward the east end you can park off of Piedmont there.
- 40:56Speaker 5: There's parking available Friday at and it is going to
- 41:00Speaker 5: be a challenge. We do anticipate a big crowd from Muhammad,
- 41:03Speaker 5: We do anticipate a big crowd from from Cameron, but
- 41:10Speaker 5: we feel like we've got the parking worked out. There
- 41:12Speaker 5: will be some signers. They'll be UH Charleston Police officer
- 41:15Speaker 5: and Kenall County Sheriff's officer presence in the neighborhood. We
- 41:20Speaker 5: do feel like we've got the parking worked out and
- 41:22Speaker 5: enough directional signage and traffic direction to get people where
- 41:26Speaker 5: they need to be.
- 41:26Speaker 4: All right and UH And if you're listening to us
- 41:29Speaker 4: in any of those areas over in you know where
- 41:31Speaker 4: Wahamma High School is in Mason County or whatever, carpool
- 41:34Speaker 4: it would help us out a whole lot of trust
- 41:35Speaker 4: if you could.
- 41:35Speaker 5: Carpooling would would certainly help.
- 41:38Speaker 4: Are they doing team buses? I mean, and the team
- 41:43Speaker 4: buses We've got parking office for fans is what I'm
- 41:46Speaker 4: at for the fans.
- 41:47Speaker 5: Oh sure. But if if they come in a bus,
- 41:49Speaker 5: we've got bus parking off of Hansford Street and then
- 41:51Speaker 5: we'll get them in to the stadium from that direction.
- 41:56Speaker 4: Okay, let's before we let you go, let's talk about
- 41:58Speaker 4: economic impact of this. I mean, these people are going
- 42:00Speaker 4: to come in and you know a lot of them,
- 42:02Speaker 4: you know, the people from Hoover and so on, and
- 42:04Speaker 4: the driveable they one and are far from here. They're
- 42:07Speaker 4: probably going to go to the game and maybe go
- 42:08Speaker 4: back home. But we do hope that they come to
- 42:11Speaker 4: downtown Charleston. You mentioned the Selango law light the night. Uh,
- 42:14Speaker 4: we do hope that they'll go downtown and heat. Talking
- 42:17Speaker 4: about fans now more than players. Obviously some are going
- 42:20Speaker 4: to be staying in hotels. Let's talk about economic impact here.
- 42:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:24Speaker 5: I'll be really interested following the event to run the
- 42:27Speaker 5: numbers and see what the real economic impact of this
- 42:29Speaker 5: event is.
- 42:30Speaker 1: You know.
- 42:31Speaker 5: The the one nice thing about having those teams from
- 42:33Speaker 5: the Eastern Panhandle, and you know, we've got we've got
- 42:36Speaker 5: four teams that qualified for housing under the wvs SEC's formula,
- 42:40Speaker 5: and that's Martinsburg, spring Mill, Frankfort, and Cameron and they're
- 42:43Speaker 5: all all of the teams are staying two nights. We
- 42:46Speaker 5: anticipate that their fans are going to come and they're
- 42:48Speaker 5: going to at least spend one night in Charleston. I
- 42:52Speaker 5: do know that between the Football Championships presented by Toyota
- 42:56Speaker 5: and the cheer Championships, that our hotels are full. I
- 43:00Speaker 5: mean I spent an hour on the phone yesterday trying
- 43:03Speaker 5: to find hotel rooms for the Martinsburg football team because
- 43:07Speaker 5: everything was taken up with cheerleading and other things happening
- 43:11Speaker 5: in the city. We got it worked out, but hotels
- 43:14Speaker 5: are full this weekend. It's going to be a great
- 43:16Speaker 5: weekend in the city of Charleston because you know you
- 43:19Speaker 5: mentioned Gomart ballparking light the night. We've got Holly Jolly
- 43:22Speaker 5: Brawley going on. There's holiday activities happening at Capital Market
- 43:27Speaker 5: Friday and Saturday, and we've got these two massive sporting competitions,
- 43:33Speaker 5: high school sporting competitions going on. It's going to be
- 43:35Speaker 5: a great weekend in the city of Charleston, all right, Tim,
- 43:39Speaker 5: hats off to you and the city and everything that
- 43:41Speaker 5: you did in getting this here. Now it's go time.
- 43:43Speaker 5: I do want to say, just allow me one more thing.
- 43:46Speaker 5: Certainly couldn't do this without the partnership and the support
- 43:50Speaker 5: of the City of Charleston. May Marry Me. Goodwin and
- 43:52Speaker 5: her staff also want to say, couldn't be done without
- 43:55Speaker 5: the Kanall County Board of Education. They actually own Lesley Field,
- 43:59Speaker 5: the upride aids that have been done there, press box,
- 44:02Speaker 5: completely renovated and expanded, locker rooms, completely renovated, soup to nuts.
- 44:09Speaker 5: They've done a massive amount of work there, including installing
- 44:12Speaker 5: a new JumboTron. Those help us, but the football Championships
- 44:17Speaker 5: coming here with the impetus to get these improvements made,
- 44:20Speaker 5: but they will benefit the community for many, many years
- 44:23Speaker 5: to come and the kids that grow up here and
- 44:25Speaker 5: play on that field. So really have to say thank
- 44:28Speaker 5: you to the Kenall County Board of Education. I've worked
- 44:31Speaker 5: closely with doctor Paula Potter, but I know that the
- 44:35Speaker 5: entire board staff has been supportive of this, so really
- 44:38Speaker 5: have to thank them for their support and help in
- 44:40Speaker 5: this effort.
- 44:41Speaker 4: Tim good Luck. I was joking with Tim as we
- 44:43Speaker 4: were walking down the steps this morning. I said, Hey,
- 44:44Speaker 4: you want to go grab a beer, go grab some
- 44:47Speaker 4: lunch or something this week because you don't have anything
- 44:48Speaker 4: else going on.
- 44:49Speaker 5: Right, tons of free time this weekend. They just hit

- 47:53Speaker 4: Let me knock out a couple of texts here, Texas, Dave,
- 47:56Speaker 4: our legislature unanimously passed not just one, but two bills
- 48:00Speaker 4: directing and funding the Capitol Building Commission and Commission on
- 48:03Speaker 4: the Arts to design and to build a monument for
- 48:05Speaker 4: our fallen Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. The legislatively directed deadline
- 48:12Speaker 4: that Governor Justice signed for the monument's completion is December
- 48:15Speaker 4: thirty first, twenty twenty four. These people haven't even started.
- 48:18Speaker 4: They've completely pushed our veterans to the back burner. Please
- 48:21Speaker 4: have someone from these commissions on your show to provide
- 48:24Speaker 4: an explanation and an apology to our West Virginia veterans, communities,
- 48:28Speaker 4: and the legislature and governor for ignoring their deadlines. See
- 48:32Speaker 4: what I can do about that, Texas. The panhandling ordinance
- 48:35Speaker 4: is obviously targeted to the homeless. If it was about
- 48:38Speaker 4: girl Scouts, politicians, etc. Why wasn't it proposed before? There
- 48:42Speaker 4: have been so many political hacks sending in dangerous intersections
- 48:45Speaker 4: and roads for years. I've said, you know with this
- 48:49Speaker 4: that this could have unintended consequences. I'm not saying I'm
- 48:53Speaker 4: for it or against. I just want to actually I
- 48:55Speaker 4: will say I'm for it, but I want to make
- 48:58Speaker 4: sure it's done correctly because it's been stricken down in
- 49:02Speaker 4: court case after court case after court case on First
- 49:05Speaker 4: Amendment issues. So I think that that's something that is
- 49:08Speaker 4: very important, is that to be done correctly. And I
- 49:10Speaker 4: think that's what they're doing this time around. We shall
- 49:12Speaker 4: see Texas Dave. I want to thank the City of
- 49:14Speaker 4: Charleston and the Kannaha County Commission for fighting the utility
- 49:17Speaker 4: companies out of control rate hikes because our legislators won't
- 49:21Speaker 4: do anything, or the Public Services Commission. I want to
- 49:24Speaker 4: get into this a little bit more tomorrow with Knaana
- 49:26Speaker 4: County Commissioner Bensolango, who's going to stop by tomorrow. Aaron
- 49:29Speaker 4: Parker has a story posted about at wv metronews dot com.
- 49:32Speaker 4: There's going to be a new bidder for the Canaha
- 49:34Speaker 4: County Judicial Building renovation project. Now you will recall that
- 49:37Speaker 4: the original bids came in at about sixteen million dollars,
- 49:41Speaker 4: which was about three million over what the county commissioners
- 49:45Speaker 4: had hoped for. Now this is all being done because
- 49:48Speaker 4: the legislature has added three more magistrates and an additional
- 49:51Speaker 4: circuit judge position, and they're simply out of space.
- 49:56Speaker 5: Now.
- 49:56Speaker 4: It's going to be discussed at the next County Commission meeting,
- 50:01Speaker 4: which will be on Thursday, and again I'm going to
- 50:02Speaker 4: have County Commission Benzolango on the show to talk about it.
- 50:05Speaker 4: Do you want to get this in here? A little
- 50:06Speaker 4: programming note our coverage of high school basketball. Believe it
- 50:10Speaker 4: or not, Jeff and I were talking about this earlier.
- 50:13Speaker 4: It's that time or high school basketball. Well, college is
- 50:16Speaker 4: already underway, but high school basketball gets underway for us.
- 50:19Speaker 4: Tonight we will have our first game of the season
- 50:21Speaker 4: as Capital. We'll be traveling to South Charleston. Airtime here
- 50:23Speaker 4: in WCCHS is at seven o'clock tonight. Interims will continue
- 50:28Speaker 4: and we'll wrap up today at the Capitol. One of
- 50:29Speaker 4: the things covered yesterday had to do with the behavioral
- 50:33Speaker 4: issues in the classrooms. Now, I remember reading several years
- 50:37Speaker 4: ago that in like the nineteen fifties or something, the
- 50:40Speaker 4: biggest problems that teachers face in the classrooms were things
- 50:43Speaker 4: like talking, guilty, party here, chewing gum, dress code violations, etc.
- 50:48Speaker 18: Etc.
- 50:49Speaker 4: If you have kids or grandkids in public school now,
- 50:52Speaker 4: or maybe you know someone who works in the public
- 50:54Speaker 4: school system. Now, it's a totally different world. And yesterday
- 50:59Speaker 4: under the Dome, lawmakers got an earful of what educators
- 51:03Speaker 4: face on a daily basis. A little background here, it's
- 51:08Speaker 4: believed that this coming session, lawmakers are going to be
- 51:11Speaker 4: looking at some bills that would allow elementary school teachers
- 51:14Speaker 4: to remove disruptive students from their classrooms. Now, the bill
- 51:18Speaker 4: was originally introduced during last year's session, but it kind
- 51:22Speaker 4: of got tied up in committees and they had to
- 51:25Speaker 4: go back and forth between in the House and so
- 51:26Speaker 4: on and so forth, and they ended up not getting done.
- 51:28Speaker 4: They ran out of time. Dave Wilson TJ. Meadows are
- 51:30Speaker 4: going to get into this further on talk line today.
- 51:32Speaker 4: Some of the instructors told some horrific stories from the
- 51:36Speaker 4: classrooms of West Virginia schools yesterday, and I think in
- 51:40Speaker 4: talking to TJ and Wilson, they're actually going to plan
- 51:43Speaker 4: on playing some of the sound from those. I heard
- 51:45Speaker 4: it this morning and yesterday afternoon, just incredible. Educators talked
- 51:50Speaker 4: about being spat upon, about having objects thrown at them,
- 51:53Speaker 4: being kicked in the face, et cetera, et cetera. You know,
- 51:57Speaker 4: every kid is entitled to an education, but something here
- 52:01Speaker 4: has has got to give it absolutely has to And
- 52:04Speaker 4: a Senate Education Chair, Amy Grady, who herself is an
- 52:07Speaker 4: elementary teacher, is going to join talk line to talk
- 52:10Speaker 4: about it today. Also on the show today, State Auditor
- 52:12Speaker 4: and Attorney General J.
- 52:13Speaker 8: JW.
- 52:13Speaker 4: Mccusky, State Democratic Party Chair in delicate, Mike Pushkin and
- 52:16Speaker 4: Marshall have led the director. Christian Spears, Brad McIlhenny more
- 52:19Speaker 4: All came up with the talk line with Dave Wilson. TJ. Meadows. Hey,
- 52:22Speaker 4: look TJ's here now, how are you man?
- 52:24Speaker 2: What up?
- 52:24Speaker 5: Buddy?

- 54:26Speaker 4: bit later on, Tim Brady from the Charleston Convention of
- 54:29Speaker 4: Visitors Bureau will be joining us. What used to be
- 54:31Speaker 4: known as the Super Six in Wheeling is now the
- 54:34Speaker 4: Super eight in Charleston, although legally I don't think you
- 54:37Speaker 4: can call it the Super bra It's the high school
- 54:38Speaker 4: football Championships, presented by Toyota at Laidley Field, featuring the
- 54:42Speaker 4: first game a noon on Friday. Now, what does all
- 54:44Speaker 4: this have to do economically for the city of Charleston.
- 54:48Speaker 4: For the first time in what thirty years? You know,
- 54:50Speaker 4: we have the championships not in Wheeling, but in Charleston
- 54:52Speaker 4: Friday and Saturday, We're going to talk to Tim Brady
- 54:54Speaker 4: about that. Plus Charleston City councilan Emmitt Pepper is here.
- 54:57Speaker 4: We have several different things in the doget to discuss
- 54:59Speaker 4: with Counselman Pepper coming up. But first I want to
- 55:02Speaker 4: bring in now the folks from Astorgato and the Charleston
- 55:04Speaker 4: Police Department. They are again this year tving up for
- 55:07Speaker 4: their annual toy drive. They will be collected new and
- 55:09Speaker 4: unwrapped toys tomorrow and Thursday at the Benny Keatam Shrine downtown.
- 55:14Speaker 4: Between eleven and seven, I had David Payne from Charleston
- 55:17Speaker 4: Police Department. Dave, good morning, good morning, thanks for having us.
- 55:19Speaker 4: And I got Rob King from astorg How are you sir.
- 55:22Speaker 4: I'm gonna have you scoot. I know we're a little
- 55:24Speaker 4: cramped in here. It's not like the big studio was
- 55:26Speaker 4: a little And we also have a man John Brown.
- 55:28Speaker 4: How are you, buddy?
- 55:29Speaker 6: Going on?
- 55:29Speaker 4: I'm doing fine, Thank you all for being here. All right,
- 55:32Speaker 4: So Dave, I'll start with you. The Charleston Police Department
- 55:35Speaker 4: teaming up with Astorgatto for this next two days. I mean,
- 55:39Speaker 4: well it's tomorrow and Thursday.
- 55:41Speaker 7: Right, correct, Yes, we're excited now that we are kicking
- 55:44Speaker 7: off our fifth annual CPD Wonderland Toy Drive. It'll start
- 55:46Speaker 7: Tomorrow and Thursday from eleven to seven and we'll be
- 55:52Speaker 7: there accepting toys for the kids.
- 55:54Speaker 4: How many years is the Charleston Police Department been doing that?
- 55:56Speaker 4: This is our fifth year, fifth year year and an
- 55:59Speaker 4: Astor got to Rob King is here and John Brown
- 56:02Speaker 4: Roberts talk to you about this. What does Astrogatto get
- 56:05Speaker 4: out of this.
- 56:07Speaker 8: It's really just something that our owner four years ago
- 56:10Speaker 8: decided to get involved when Officer Cassie Johnson had been
- 56:15Speaker 8: killed and he wanted to do something for the police
- 56:18Speaker 8: department and the community. And each year we just like
- 56:22Speaker 8: to see it grow bigger and bigger. We started out
- 56:24Speaker 8: with around fifty kids and it was eight hundred last
- 56:27Speaker 8: year and now we have a goal well over one thousand.
- 56:30Speaker 4: And you guys just make it so easy to elect
- 56:32Speaker 4: these toys because I mean, you know, the and and
- 56:35Speaker 4: hats off in a big shout to the folks at
- 56:36Speaker 4: the Many keep them shrine because they're wonderful to do
- 56:38Speaker 4: all kinds of different things in the community. But they've
- 56:41Speaker 4: got that wonderful facility there. And you don't even have
- 56:43Speaker 4: to get out of your car, if I remember correct
- 56:44Speaker 4: with them last year, just kind of pull up and
- 56:46Speaker 4: drop them off, right.
- 56:46Speaker 7: Correct, just pull up. Well, we'll have officers there to
- 56:50Speaker 7: unload your packages for you. But we really would like
- 56:52Speaker 7: to see the kids come also and enjoy the bouncy
- 56:54Speaker 7: houses that we'll have over there. We'll have Sana over there.
- 56:58Speaker 7: He arrives at noon tomorrow and he'll be coming at
- 57:00Speaker 7: five thirty on Thursday, and we'll have the kids from
- 57:03Speaker 7: the Discovery Center there tomorrow at noon to welcome Santa.
- 57:06Speaker 4: Now what does a Discovery center explain that? For those
- 57:08Speaker 4: who don't know, it's just a like a preschool downtown. Okay,
- 57:12Speaker 4: all right, so they're all gonna be there as well. John,
- 57:14Speaker 4: sub bring you in here for a moment. Uh, I
- 57:17Speaker 4: know you love doing this sort of stuff, so that's
- 57:19Speaker 4: your big guy.
- 57:19Speaker 6: Yes, it's uh, it's pretty cool, you know, to try
- 57:22Speaker 6: to give back to the community and help help the
- 57:24Speaker 6: Charleston Police out and just just just giving back to kids.
- 57:28Speaker 6: That's unfortunate that that won't be having anything under the
- 57:32Speaker 6: Christmas tree.
- 57:34Speaker 4: You guys are gonna take care of that.
- 57:35Speaker 5: Yeah, we don't try to.
- 57:36Speaker 6: Yeah, so what he would put out there that we
- 57:38Speaker 6: need to try to fill the astrog out of Charleston
- 57:42Speaker 6: car holder.
- 57:43Speaker 1: So how long is it?
- 57:44Speaker 5: Rob about?
- 57:45Speaker 18: Uh?
- 57:45Speaker 5: How long is the car holder? It's about thirty two foot.
- 57:48Speaker 5: So we got a lot of space to fill up
- 57:49Speaker 5: this year.
- 57:50Speaker 4: So you know how many toys that is? I guess
- 57:52Speaker 4: it all depends on what kind of toys they are.
- 57:53Speaker 4: But yeah, how many?
- 57:54Speaker 5: How many?
- 57:55Speaker 4: If you if you look at the average I mean,
- 57:56Speaker 4: and it's so much smarter than I am to do this.
- 57:59Speaker 4: If you looked at the average sized toy, all right,
- 58:02Speaker 4: whatever that size may be, how many toys the Jeff had?
- 58:04Speaker 4: Fill it up? Dave, you're you're a numbers guy.
- 58:06Speaker 7: I would say, to fill that up. O. It's a lot,
- 58:09Speaker 7: but a lot, a lot. Yeah, it's a lot, maybe
- 58:13Speaker 7: fifteen thousand or so toys. I mean it's yeah, it's
- 58:16Speaker 7: a big yeah. Yeah, yes, it's a long Yeah.
- 58:19Speaker 1: With the bikes and stuff. Might fill it up.
- 58:21Speaker 4: Okay, And now, and how do you get these to
- 58:23Speaker 4: the kids? What's that process?
- 58:24Speaker 7: Well, there's a there's an application process that we started
- 58:26Speaker 7: actually on Sunday, and we accept a two hundred and
- 58:29Speaker 7: fifty kids on Sunday, we had to close it down.
- 58:31Speaker 7: Depending on how many toys and donations we get on
- 58:34Speaker 7: our upcoming toy drive, will open it back up and
- 58:37Speaker 7: they'll apply and then next week what we'll do is
- 58:39Speaker 7: we'll go sort them, bag them, and the people that
- 58:42Speaker 7: applied will come and pick them up next week.
- 58:44Speaker 4: Okay, again, we're talking about the Astorgado and Charleston Police
- 58:47Speaker 4: Department Annual Toy driving next Wednesday and Thursday over at
- 58:50Speaker 4: the Benny Keaton Shrine. Remind you at the day of

- 59:24Speaker 4: folks that are wonderful to give back to several things
- 59:27Speaker 4: in the community throughout the year. But talk about just
- 59:29Speaker 4: the average folks day.
- 59:31Speaker 7: Well, I mean, we really couldn't pull this off without
- 59:33Speaker 7: the community. I mean it's all through donations. We're just
- 59:36Speaker 7: the people that actually get to see the smiles on
- 59:38Speaker 7: the kid's face when they come pick up the toys.
- 59:40Speaker 7: But really, if it wasn't for the community coming to
- 59:42Speaker 7: help support us, we couldn't pull this off at all.
- 59:44Speaker 7: Like I said, we served a little over eight hundred
- 59:46Speaker 7: children last year and we're hoping to serve at least
- 59:49Speaker 7: a thousand this year hopefully.
- 59:51Speaker 4: Now, you guys and anybody can jump in here. All
- 59:53Speaker 4: three of you can have been doing this for some time.
- 59:55Speaker 4: You said that the fifth year that you've done this.
- 59:58Speaker 4: I don't want to go into details an individual obviously
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: a child's name or anything, but give me, give me
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: a good give me a great story any of you
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: about about one of the kids that you saw that
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: really their face lit up when they when they got
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: their toy, or or or some stories you've heard maybe
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: through the process.
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: Just sure, sure, I mean it's there's several kids.
- 1:00:18Speaker 7: I mean when they come, even when the kids come
- 1:00:19Speaker 7: with their parents that pick up their toys, of course
- 1:00:21Speaker 7: they're bagged up. They can't see what's innythy. I mean,
- 1:00:23Speaker 7: we have hundreds of kids that come over there and
- 1:00:26Speaker 7: they just to see there. They're they're they're smiling their faces,
- 1:00:29Speaker 7: you know. I mean, that's that that does it for us,
- 1:00:30Speaker 7: you know. I mean, so there's really not one story
- 1:00:32Speaker 7: that stands out because I'm sure they're all special.
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: Yeah, they all are. Again, we're talking about the Charleston
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: Police Department and the ass Torgado Toy event which is
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: going to be at the Benny Keatam Shrine tomorrow from
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: eleven until and the next day two Thursday, from eleven
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: until seven. And again when you come out for the event, guys,
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: it's not just about the toys, like you said, Like
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: like Payne said, you've got the you got bouncy houses,
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: you got all kinds of cool stuff going on over there.
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: Sanda's there, say, they'll be there, be lit up with
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: are lights.
- 1:01:01Speaker 7: So you see the blue lights flashing in the in
- 1:01:02Speaker 7: the corner over there, just drive up like I said,
- 1:01:05Speaker 7: we have officers on hand to take your toys for you.
- 1:01:09Speaker 7: We may even have a surprise gift for our first
- 1:01:11Speaker 7: one hundred people that drop off toys.
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: I think you did that last year, did first the
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: surprise gift for the first one hundred people, right, Okay,
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: we don't We're going to keep it.
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: A surprise, right right.
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: Dave, don't want to talk to you because you're kind
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: of you know, you do so many things with the
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: Charleston Police Department, but one of the things that you do,
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: I don't know if it's on your business card or not,
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: is you're just you're you're kind of a community ambassador.
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: You know, you're always out out there in the community
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: and sometimes you know, in our in our communities, the
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: people only see the police when it's a bad thing,
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: you know, when there's a crime that's been committed or whatever.
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: This is so important to have events for a police
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: department in the city like Charleston, to have events like
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: that when they see that you're that you're actually giving
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: back and that you're just trying to help.
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: Oh, for sure.
- 1:01:54Speaker 7: I mean that's we look forward to this really every year.
- 1:01:57Speaker 7: All of our officers look forward to this. We actually
- 1:01:59Speaker 7: have presents or gifts that we give our officers and
- 1:02:02Speaker 7: they take them out to their beats and they actually
- 1:02:03Speaker 7: go up to children and just random children and give
- 1:02:05Speaker 7: them presents or knock on the door of a residence
- 1:02:09Speaker 7: they made that they visited in the past, you know
- 1:02:11Speaker 7: what I mean, it may not have been so good,
- 1:02:12Speaker 7: so they have a gift to give them this time.
- 1:02:14Speaker 10: So that's my favorite thing about this is when the
- 1:02:17Speaker 10: officers go out.
- 1:02:18Speaker 8: If we have extra toys after the fact, they drive
- 1:02:21Speaker 8: around in one of the police trucks and kids will
- 1:02:24Speaker 8: be walking down the street and they'll pick out a toy,
- 1:02:26Speaker 8: or they'll go through different communities and give out toys
- 1:02:29Speaker 8: in the faces and the excitement is just you can't
- 1:02:32Speaker 8: get that.
- 1:02:33Speaker 10: It doesn't get any better indeed.
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: All right, So we got a lot of folks who
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: listen to the show that maybe are in the business community,
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: or maybe they're a different time civic organizations or whatever.
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: Put out the final plea to them to help out
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: put this well.
- 1:02:46Speaker 7: Basically, you know, we don't want any kid to go
- 1:02:48Speaker 7: without a present on Christmas. So that's the really the
- 1:02:50Speaker 7: biggest thing here. They can go to our Facebook, our
- 1:02:53Speaker 7: Facebook page. We actually have a link there that they
- 1:02:55Speaker 7: can donate online if they can't make it to the
- 1:02:58Speaker 7: our toy drive. But really we're here for the kids.
- 1:03:01Speaker 7: We want to see every kid have a toy for Christmas.
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: That's the whole idea. And again the hours are from
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: eleven of seven at the Many Keedom Shrine, one hundred
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: Qarrier Street near the College Team of Convention Center. Your
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: gabs is going to be down there, Santa Claus is
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: going to be their bouncy houses and more. John, if
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: you got.
- 1:03:16Speaker 6: If you have any toys and you can't make it

- 1:08:14Speaker 4: saw something that you posted on social media about the
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: death of former Supreme Court justice and Attorney General and
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: all around political icon Daryl McGraw. You had shared a
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: post on your social media about that. I hope I'm
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: not getting through personal here, but what would you like
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: to say about that?
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: Oh?
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: Yeah, and I did.
- 1:08:33Speaker 14: I haven't met him before, but I didn't know him
- 1:08:35Speaker 14: personal or anything. But my dad worked your dad Yeast
- 1:08:37Speaker 14: with him.
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: Yeah, he was.
- 1:08:38Speaker 14: He worked with with Judge McGraw when he was a judge,
- 1:08:42Speaker 14: and and so that was when I was a little baby.
- 1:08:44Speaker 14: He was he was working there at the at the
- 1:08:46Speaker 14: UH at the in the capitol. They were working for
- 1:08:48Speaker 14: Judge McGraw and had a great experience there. And so
- 1:08:51Speaker 14: you know, he's a he has an icon, was an icon,
- 1:08:53Speaker 14: and and I think he had made a really big
- 1:08:55Speaker 14: positive impact.
- 1:08:56Speaker 5: On the state.
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean he did, and he will certainly be missed.
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: And I said, I said yes today when I had
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: Mike Pushkin on the show, I said, I think when
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: they write the book about West Virginia political figures over
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: the years, you know you're gonna you're gonna talk about
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: Robert Byrd, You're going to talk about the McGraw brothers,
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: You're going to talk about Arch Moore and Jay Rockefeller
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: and so many of these other these just these I guess,
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: these these larger than life characters. I guess, yeah, I guess.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:23Speaker 5: It's definitely like a storybook sometimes.
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: All Right, So you spent a lot of time you
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: have on this show in the past talking about rate
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: increases with the with the power company. Where do you
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: want to go with this?
- 1:09:34Speaker 14: Yeah, Well, so folks probably remember several months back there
- 1:09:38Speaker 14: was a really big rate increase proposed by almost thirty
- 1:09:41Speaker 14: dollars a month for most for most residential customers. So
- 1:09:46Speaker 14: that got dismissed due to a technical issue. Essentially you
- 1:09:50Speaker 14: had a son. I appreciate you doing that. That's been reintroduced, resubmitted.
- 1:09:55Speaker 14: So there's it's it's a little bit less, but it's
- 1:09:57Speaker 14: still pretty significant. Twenty almost twenty four dollars a month
- 1:10:02Speaker 14: rate increase from from the twenty nine then it was
- 1:10:05Speaker 14: before and so this is this is called a base rate.
- 1:10:09Speaker 14: So this is these cases last for some time. It
- 1:10:12Speaker 14: will be in this next summer before this will be final.
- 1:10:15Speaker 14: But you know, we're we're looking very closely at it.
- 1:10:19Speaker 14: We've intervened in the case. They've also taught the companies
- 1:10:23Speaker 14: have really talked up a proposal to kind of spread
- 1:10:26Speaker 14: out the rate increase over a twenty year period and
- 1:10:30Speaker 14: so that that may end up being some some cost
- 1:10:34Speaker 14: savings for folks. We don't know exactly how much yet,
- 1:10:38Speaker 14: because the way they're proposing they do that is they
- 1:10:41Speaker 14: have a separate case for part of the rate increase.
- 1:10:44Speaker 5: That would come up in you know, next month, a
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: couple of months.
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: So what do you hear from I mean, I know
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: you have a lot of different hats in your life,
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: but I'm gonna ask you from a city councilman perspective
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: on this one. What do you hear from your constituents
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: out there about these I mean, nobody likes to pay it. Obviously,
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: I completely understan that because you're, in addition to being
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: a council when you're also a consumer of power. We
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: all are. But what do you hear when talking to
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: people out there?
- 1:11:07Speaker 14: Yeah, I mean people are frustrated the rates just keep
- 1:11:09Speaker 14: going up. It's it's it's very Uh, it's gotten a
- 1:11:13Speaker 14: lot more expensive. They've more than doubled in the last
- 1:11:15Speaker 14: fifteen years, uh here in in this area for Apple
- 1:11:19Speaker 14: Watching power customers. So it's it's been a significant increase.
- 1:11:23Speaker 5: For folks who are.
- 1:11:24Speaker 14: Have limited incomes, living on fixed incomes, it's it's a
- 1:11:27Speaker 14: it's a challenge.
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: It's a real challenge.
- 1:11:29Speaker 14: And of course, you know, uh, food's going up to
- 1:11:32Speaker 14: and there's a lot of other things that have that
- 1:11:33Speaker 14: have gone Uh. Costs have gone up, but I don't
- 1:11:36Speaker 14: think much has gone up quite as much as our
- 1:11:38Speaker 14: electric rates.
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: So let me play Devil's advocate here for a moment. Okay,
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: it's the it's just the price. It's the cost of
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: the price of doing business. You know, I mean, it's
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: costing them more.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: And whether it's you know, the power company, whether it's water,
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: whether it's gas, whatever utility we're talking about, it costs
- 1:11:54Speaker 4: them more to do business, so they have to pass
- 1:11:57Speaker 4: those expenses onto someone.
- 1:11:59Speaker 14: Your your comment to that, Yeah, So so what we
- 1:12:02Speaker 14: our system is as a regulated monopoly, right, so we
- 1:12:04Speaker 14: in exchange for getting having a monopoly where they're the
- 1:12:07Speaker 14: only option that we have. What what we what happens
- 1:12:11Speaker 14: is that the Public Service Commission and people like my
- 1:12:15Speaker 14: clients are lots of different people can can weigh in
- 1:12:18Speaker 14: and have experts and look and to see whether these
- 1:12:21Speaker 14: rates are really reasonable.
- 1:12:22Speaker 5: And so that's that's the system that we have.
- 1:12:25Speaker 14: And our issue is that, you know, our rates have
- 1:12:28Speaker 14: gone up so much, we believe because the there's a
- 1:12:31Speaker 14: lot of expensive power plants that we operate, that our
- 1:12:34Speaker 14: utility operates, and instead of using the free market to
- 1:12:38Speaker 14: buy their power, they're paying the sums to run those
- 1:12:40Speaker 14: power plants. So and those the power plants are not
- 1:12:44Speaker 14: running as cost competitive as you know other ones that
- 1:12:47Speaker 14: could could be using the free market for and so
- 1:12:50Speaker 14: that that's one of.
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: Our major issues.
- 1:12:53Speaker 14: And you know, as I mentioned, this is a system
- 1:12:55Speaker 14: where it's a regulator that we can push and pull
- 1:12:58Speaker 14: and look at it and there's oversight by the Public
- 1:13:00Speaker 14: Service Commission. One of the proposals in this in this
- 1:13:03Speaker 14: rate increase is that they would just be they caught
- 1:13:06Speaker 14: a race stabilization in surch Church where they would be
- 1:13:09Speaker 14: able to just increase rates three percent a year with
- 1:13:12Speaker 14: essentially no over saying at all. And so that and
- 1:13:16Speaker 14: I think that you know there spin on it is
- 1:13:18Speaker 14: that you know this is going to be something that
- 1:13:20Speaker 14: will be you know, that way that we don't have
- 1:13:23Speaker 14: the big bumps and there's a lot of rate increases
- 1:13:24Speaker 14: every year, which is what happens. It's been two to
- 1:13:28Speaker 14: three four different cases every year. The race don't seem
- 1:13:32Speaker 14: to go down too much. And so that's another concern
- 1:13:35Speaker 14: we have in this proposal.
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: Talking to him with Charleston City Councilman Emmitt Pepper. The

- 1:13:54Speaker 4: move on to some other things, I got a few
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: other things I want to talk to you about. Where
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: do we go from here on this? And you kind
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: of mentioned at the beginning of the interview, what's what's
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: the next step in this counseling.
- 1:14:02Speaker 14: Yeah, yeah, so there's gonna be so we have a
- 1:14:04Speaker 14: I'm part of a coalition called West Virginia's for Energy Freedom,
- 1:14:06Speaker 14: So people go to Energy Freedom wv't out or they
- 1:14:08Speaker 14: can engage in that. We're going to probably we know
- 1:14:11Speaker 14: we're still kind of reading through it, but but I
- 1:14:13Speaker 14: think we're pretty close to the point where we're going
- 1:14:15Speaker 14: to have an ability for people to weigh in and
- 1:14:18Speaker 14: make their voice heard at the Public Service Commission. That
- 1:14:21Speaker 14: the last one little issue, that big issue that we're
- 1:14:23Speaker 14: concerned with, is there. There's also a proposal to make
- 1:14:26Speaker 14: it much harder to go a solar in this So
- 1:14:28Speaker 14: if you want to do something about your bills by
- 1:14:30Speaker 14: going solar, that becomes harder too.
- 1:14:33Speaker 5: We can we'll have more information about that online.
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: All right, So I want to move on to a
- 1:14:37Speaker 4: couple other things. Number One, I know you're heavily involved
- 1:14:40Speaker 4: in something with the first Presbyterian Church here in Charleston,
- 1:14:43Speaker 4: and they did a Hope Village. Talk about that a
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: little bit because it's is it over? It is over,
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: but talk about it anyway.
- 1:14:49Speaker 14: Yeah, yeah, So first, I mean I'm not I'm not
- 1:14:51Speaker 14: really that involved, but but I do go there and
- 1:14:55Speaker 14: and it's a really cool thing. Peop folks can check
- 1:14:57Speaker 14: should check it out next year. It's not fundraiser for
- 1:15:00Speaker 14: the church, but what it is is it's a it's
- 1:15:02Speaker 14: a way for they want to part of the mission
- 1:15:05Speaker 14: of the church is to help support folks around the
- 1:15:07Speaker 14: world who are struggling. And so they they purchased food
- 1:15:12Speaker 14: or different gift items and there's some food and coffee.
- 1:15:15Speaker 14: Actually you can go all year around and get fair
- 1:15:17Speaker 14: trade coffee, fair trade.
- 1:15:19Speaker 5: Olive oil and stuff like that.
- 1:15:21Speaker 14: And so this is a way if they kind of
- 1:15:23Speaker 14: broaden that and have every you know, I think it
- 1:15:26Speaker 14: was three or four weekends out of the year leading
- 1:15:29Speaker 14: up to Thanksgiving where you know, people can come and
- 1:15:32Speaker 14: buy stuff. And it supports small farmers, small businesses from
- 1:15:37Speaker 14: around the world and places that are struggling, a lot
- 1:15:39Speaker 14: of war torn areas and things like that. And actually
- 1:15:42Speaker 14: some of the places that they use were actually were
- 1:15:46Speaker 14: they provide services for folks overseas, but they're based on
- 1:15:49Speaker 14: areas that got hit really heard by Hurricane Helene, so
- 1:15:51Speaker 14: it was actually helping those entities as well. So anyway,
- 1:15:54Speaker 14: it was a really cool thing. Folks should check that out.
- 1:15:57Speaker 20: And we're talking about it after the fact and that's
- 1:15:59Speaker 20: but yeah, because you had reached out to me about it,
- 1:16:01Speaker 20: and I just we just we couldn't get our schedule
- 1:16:04Speaker 20: election time, and I get that to get you on,
- 1:16:06Speaker 20: but I wanted to give.
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: An opportunity to talk about it as we move into
- 1:16:09Speaker 4: next year. Countselan, I spent a little time last week
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: talking about the proposed panhandling ordinance here in Charleston. Now
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: I understand it has gone to committee. Now I had
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: Countsman Chad Robinson on the show to talk about it
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: last week. Mayor Goodwin was also on the show last
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: week talking about it. Do you care to I mean,
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: where are you.
- 1:16:27Speaker 18: On all this?
- 1:16:28Speaker 5: Well, A couple of things.
- 1:16:29Speaker 14: I mean, so one, I don't think this had happened
- 1:16:31Speaker 14: when you had Taman Robinson on last week or the mayor.
- 1:16:37Speaker 14: There's a lawsuit was filed in against mon County who
- 1:16:41Speaker 14: had a similar ordinances. I think both of them talked
- 1:16:43Speaker 14: about last week, and so you know, from my perspective,
- 1:16:49Speaker 14: you know, just I'm no expert on First Amendment law
- 1:16:53Speaker 14: or anything, but my reader of it is there's some
- 1:16:56Speaker 14: First Amendment challenges there that might be, you know, it
- 1:16:59Speaker 14: is someone's right to be able to ask somebody for money.
- 1:17:03Speaker 14: But so I think what we'll you know, my guess
- 1:17:06Speaker 14: is that or my strong inclination would be to just
- 1:17:09Speaker 14: wait and see how the lawsuit plays out. But you know,
- 1:17:13Speaker 14: I know that the chairman and the mayor are both
- 1:17:16Speaker 14: very you know, committed to taking the time thinking it through.
- 1:17:19Speaker 14: Let's let's think about all that different options. How do
- 1:17:22Speaker 14: we do this in the way that's you know, protective
- 1:17:24Speaker 14: of people's rights but also protective of everybody else's safety.
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: And I mentioned this on the show before, and it's
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: a very good point on your behalf there that when
- 1:17:33Speaker 4: this has gone not only in West Virginia but across
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: the country. You know, the frequently these laws, although maybe
- 1:17:39Speaker 4: they're well intentioned, are are stricken down on First Amendment issues. However,
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: it looks like this time around, what they're doing is
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: they're trying to take it from a safety perspective and
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: that they're trying to say, Okay, well, it's not about
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: the person stopping you on the street and asking you
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: for for change or whatever. It's about people standing in
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: right of ways. It's about people standing next to highways
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: and things of that nature. And it wouldn't only involved
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: what you what you think of of just somebody asking
- 1:18:05Speaker 4: you for spare change. This could involve political figures standing
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: and holding signs up. You're a political figure, so you
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: may not be able to stand up there.
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: I've been known to stand at the front of the
- 1:18:16Speaker 5: south side of Bridgehich.
- 1:18:17Speaker 4: I think every you know every and it could also
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: have It could also get into those holding up a
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: sign that says you know car washed, that you know
- 1:18:27Speaker 4: the auto parts store straight ahead or or whatever. I mean,
- 1:18:29Speaker 4: there's a lot of different things that could possibly play.
- 1:18:34Speaker 14: Everybody's you know, the people who are proposing it are
- 1:18:36Speaker 14: saying it is about panhandling, so yeah, I mean, it'll
- 1:18:39Speaker 14: be interesting to see, you know, smarter people than myself,
- 1:18:42Speaker 14: judge clear up in the Northern District will be looking
- 1:18:45Speaker 14: at this and similar law up there, and you know,
- 1:18:47Speaker 14: I think it would be problematic or expensive for us
- 1:18:51Speaker 14: and not good use of taxpayer money to go into
- 1:18:54Speaker 14: this while there's an opending lossuit.
- 1:18:56Speaker 4: All right, what else is on your play? What else
- 1:18:57Speaker 4: you're looking at as we close out the year? The
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: time is ords? What else as a city counciloran or
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: anything else you want to talk about?
- 1:19:03Speaker 5: Aim it? Yeah, yeah, I mean I think that.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: Well.
- 1:19:06Speaker 14: One thing that's that's going on in my life is
- 1:19:08Speaker 14: that there's been a lot of movement. I've been able
- 1:19:11Speaker 14: to help a lot of people in my private practice
- 1:19:14Speaker 14: with student loan debt. There I've already gotten rid of
- 1:19:17Speaker 14: one hundred and fifty thousand dollars worth of people's student
- 1:19:19Speaker 14: loan debt through a bankruptcy process. And it's a it's
- 1:19:22Speaker 14: a it's an area of law of people think that
- 1:19:23Speaker 14: you can't bankrupt student loans, but it's it's been helping
- 1:19:26Speaker 14: out a lot of people.
- 1:19:26Speaker 5: And people are.
- 1:19:27Speaker 14: Struggling with student loans and it's gotten i mean from
- 1:19:29Speaker 14: when you and I were in college, it's gotten to
- 1:19:31Speaker 14: be a lot worse.
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: It's it's you can't look I'm one of those people.
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: I'm a kid of the I went to college in
- 1:19:37Speaker 4: the started in the late eighties and through the early nineties,
- 1:19:40Speaker 4: and I can easily say, you know, I can I
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: can be that guy, which I frequently am on the
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: show counsel and you know, somebody that looks back goes
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: well in my day. To be fair, it's not the
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: same world. It's not the same and I need to
- 1:19:52Speaker 4: do a better job of that as saying, you know,
- 1:19:54Speaker 4: when I went to college in nineteen eighty eight, it's
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: not the same that the people that are looking at
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: these student loans debts from twenty fourteen twenty fifteen went through.
- 1:20:03Speaker 5: It's it's a.
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: Totally different what's what's the percentage that it's that the
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: rates of race.
- 1:20:07Speaker 14: Since then in many cases, I don't know this percentage
- 1:20:10Speaker 14: of the rates off the top of my head, but
- 1:20:11Speaker 14: I know that, you know, the student un debt has
- 1:20:13Speaker 14: ballooned in the past, you know, decade or two. And
- 1:20:16Speaker 14: so you know, I've had people come in, who's seventy
- 1:20:19Speaker 14: year old guy, Actually he was going to school in
- 1:20:21Speaker 14: the late nineties and early two thousands, and he still
- 1:20:25Speaker 14: has student on debt from a significant amount of it
- 1:20:28Speaker 14: from from way back then.
- 1:20:29Speaker 5: And and so these are people who you know, when
- 1:20:32Speaker 5: does it end?
- 1:20:33Speaker 9: You know?
- 1:20:33Speaker 5: And so we're able to help people with that which
- 1:20:35Speaker 5: is great.
- 1:20:36Speaker 4: All right, Well, keep doing good things in city council.
- 1:20:39Speaker 4: I know that, you know, Charleston has such a large
- 1:20:41Speaker 4: city council, and you've got a variety of different voices,
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: and you stand up for different areas and some are
- 1:20:47Speaker 4: at large, and you know you're working with the mayor
- 1:20:49Speaker 4: and so on and so forth. But I think that
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: the overall, I think there's a lot of exciting things
- 1:20:53Speaker 4: going on in Charleston, and I know as we head
- 1:20:54Speaker 4: into twenty twenty five, you're going to continue to see
- 1:20:57Speaker 4: those as well. Council with Emmitt Pepper is always a

- 1:24:14Speaker 4: Mars show, State Senator Glen Jefferies is going to join us.
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: There's been a lot of talk about economic development here
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: as of late in West Virginia and some things that
- 1:24:21Speaker 4: were supposed to happen with the special session. Well there
- 1:24:24Speaker 4: ended up not being a special session. It was just interims.
- 1:24:27Speaker 4: I don't want to see just interims because interims are
- 1:24:29Speaker 4: continuing today. But I'm going to talk to Cintra Glen
- 1:24:32Speaker 4: Jeffries about some things along that along that line of
- 1:24:36Speaker 4: thinking when it comes to economic development, things of that nature.
- 1:24:39Speaker 4: He'll be on the show tomorrow. Plus Jay Silverman's going
- 1:24:41Speaker 4: to be here now. Like a lot of us, Jay
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: wears a lot of hats. He's of course with the
- 1:24:45Speaker 4: Charleston Dirty Birds as they continue with the Selango Law
- 1:24:48Speaker 4: Light the Night Over at Gomart Ballpark. He's also got
- 1:24:51Speaker 4: this YouTube channel, Have Fun. Where as best I've been
- 1:24:53Speaker 4: able to ascertain, he drives all over West Virginia and
- 1:24:56Speaker 4: eats things pretty cool gig if you can get it.
- 1:24:58Speaker 4: But Jay is also a part of a worldwide organization
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: that does a lot of good for people, and that
- 1:25:04Speaker 4: is the Moose Organization. We're going to talk to Jay
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: about that coming up on the show tomorrow. Plus Conaw
- 1:25:09Speaker 4: County Comission Benceulango will be stopping by as well this
- 1:25:13Speaker 4: Friday and Saturday. The eyes of the sports world in
- 1:25:16Speaker 4: West Virginia and maybe maybe we could take the focus
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: off the change in the football coaches in both Morgantown
- 1:25:21Speaker 4: and Huntington. We can focus on the field and also
- 1:25:23Speaker 4: not in the courtroom to talk about Well, you used
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: to be known as the Super six. Now it's this
- 1:25:27Speaker 4: is the high school football state title games. For years
- 1:25:30Speaker 4: in Wheelings starting Friday continuing into Saturday. Championships are back
- 1:25:34Speaker 4: in Charleston. Tim Brady's with the Charleston Convention of Visitors Bureau,
- 1:25:37Speaker 4: and he joined us now to talk about it. Tim,
- 1:25:38Speaker 4: good morning, Welcome to the show.
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: Thanks for having me. Dave, always a pleasure to be here, brother.
- 1:25:42Speaker 4: And so after a week or so delay in the courts,
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: we finally got it worked out. We're ready to play football.
- 1:25:48Speaker 4: First game Friday at noon. I've seen and I've heard
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: some of your other interviews with Fred and different people
- 1:25:54Speaker 4: about this, but talk about that delay process, what that
- 1:25:56Speaker 4: was like, through no fault of your own, obviously, you
- 1:25:58Speaker 4: know when you had that in the court system and
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: you're like, Okay, what are we going to do here?
- 1:26:03Speaker 4: Luckily we got it worked out, didn't cast too big.
- 1:26:05Speaker 4: We're probably but talk about that from the city's perspective.
- 1:26:09Speaker 4: Let's let's just kind of get into that.
- 1:26:11Speaker 5: Sure. So first and foremost, I'm glad you said there's
- 1:26:14Speaker 5: certainly nothing, nothing that had nothing to do with it.
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: It would have had still would have been delayed a week.
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: Now.
- 1:26:21Speaker 5: Here's what I will say. The one week delay in
- 1:26:25Speaker 5: hosting the West Virginia State High School Football Championships presented
- 1:26:29Speaker 5: by Toyota. That's the official Name's the official name. Had
- 1:26:31Speaker 5: to work that in, just like a good NASCAR driver.
- 1:26:33Speaker 5: I had to get my plugs in, you know. To
- 1:26:37Speaker 5: be honest, David, it really didn't impact us that much.
- 1:26:41Speaker 5: It the field was still available, you know. The hotels.
- 1:26:46Speaker 5: The one issue that we bumped into, and we really
- 1:26:49Speaker 5: got this put to bed yesterday was hotel rooms because
- 1:26:52Speaker 5: now the state high School Football Championships presented by Toyota
- 1:26:56Speaker 5: are being held at the same time as the West
- 1:26:59Speaker 5: Virginia's Date High School Cheer Championships taking place this Saturday
- 1:27:04Speaker 5: at the Charleston Coliseum. So you had cheer rooms that
- 1:27:07Speaker 5: were booked months ago, and we had a full plan
- 1:27:10Speaker 5: laid out for where teams that qualified for football housing
- 1:27:13Speaker 5: would be placed. Had it happened last weekend. We had
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: to kind of mix and match and move some puzzle
- 1:27:20Speaker 5: pieces around throughout the day yesterday to make sure that
- 1:27:22Speaker 5: all the teams that needed rooms had the rooms that
- 1:27:24Speaker 5: they needed. So once we got that worked out, it
- 1:27:27Speaker 5: was really just taking the plans from the initial week
- 1:27:30Speaker 5: and translating everything to the following week. So for us
- 1:27:33Speaker 5: logistically aside from hotel rooms. It wasn't that big of
- 1:27:36Speaker 5: a deal.
- 1:27:37Speaker 4: Talk about the process of getting the championships here because
- 1:27:41Speaker 4: then Wheeling for so many years. Yep, and they're back
- 1:27:46Speaker 4: in Charleston, talk about how that whole process.
- 1:27:49Speaker 5: So, yeah, they had been in Wheeling for thirty years.
- 1:27:53Speaker 5: And I'm going to say from jump and I hope
- 1:27:57Speaker 5: that folks from Wheeling. I've said this many times and
- 1:28:01Speaker 5: I want to make sure that I stress it. Wheeling
- 1:28:04Speaker 5: did a fantastic job with this with this event in
- 1:28:08Speaker 5: a lot of ways, they really created the template and
- 1:28:10Speaker 5: set the bar for what the expectation was from a
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: host committee for this event. Whealing did an outstanding job
- 1:28:17Speaker 5: with it. However, the wvs SAC decided to put the
- 1:28:23Speaker 5: championships out to bid, and there were I believe four
- 1:28:27Speaker 5: bid presentations from host cities, actually four bids, five cities.
- 1:28:33Speaker 5: Charleston bid and one Wheeling bid on the event. Bluefield
- 1:28:38Speaker 5: also bid on the event, and then there was a
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: combined bid from Morgantown and Huntington that would have split
- 1:28:46Speaker 5: the game every other year between WVU and Marshall. So
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: there were four bids and we put together what we
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: thought was a competitive bid and we went into the
- 1:28:55Speaker 5: bid process and won it, so everyone had the opportunity
- 1:28:59Speaker 5: to present. There were site visits by the wvs SEC
- 1:29:03Speaker 5: staff and some of their board members to all of
- 1:29:04Speaker 5: the facilities, and through the process we walked away having
- 1:29:10Speaker 5: won the event for the next three years, with the
- 1:29:12Speaker 5: mutual option for the fourth.
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: So when people come out to these and it's kind
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: of an interesting if you look at the teams that
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: are in this you have some teams from our listening area,
- 1:29:23Speaker 4: the Charles Jerry of course, you got Herbert Hoover, and
- 1:29:26Speaker 4: you know we've got Rohan County. We talked about them
- 1:29:28Speaker 4: during the break. But then you've got some schools coming
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: down that are not so close to here, your stomping
- 1:29:33Speaker 4: grounds up in Bridgeport, and the two schools that I
- 1:29:37Speaker 4: think are like fifteen miles apart over in the Eastern Panhandle,
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: but they're going to pack up buses and come down
- 1:29:42Speaker 4: here to play the game. And that happened in the
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: past as well. Yeah, I just think because I used
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: to and Fred jokes with me. Fred Persinger jokes with
- 1:29:48Speaker 4: me all the time.
- 1:29:49Speaker 5: I used to red hat the Super six when it
- 1:29:52Speaker 5: was in Wheeling for years worked on the sidelines and
- 1:29:55Speaker 5: was the radio and TV timeout coordinator working with the referees.
- 1:29:59Speaker 5: And I distinctly remember Triple A championship games between Capitol
- 1:30:05Speaker 5: in South Charlestown where they would load the buses and
- 1:30:07Speaker 5: go to Wheeling. So the goal of the host committee
- 1:30:09Speaker 5: and to that point is to make it like a
- 1:30:12Speaker 5: bowl game, so even if you are local, it is
- 1:30:14Speaker 5: still special. And I'll talk more about that in a minute,
- 1:30:17Speaker 5: but when you talk about the schools that are coming in,
- 1:30:19Speaker 5: you know, it's really exciting to get a team like
- 1:30:21Speaker 5: Cameron that's never played in the state championship before. So
- 1:30:24Speaker 5: Cameron's coming, They're excited. They're coming down for two days.
- 1:30:27Speaker 5: Cameron's a cool story because they play on Friday at noon.
- 1:30:31Speaker 5: Their cheerleaders compete on Saturday at the coliseum in the
- 1:30:35Speaker 5: State Cheer Championship. So their football team is staying an
- 1:30:38Speaker 5: extra night on their own dimes so that their football
- 1:30:41Speaker 5: players can be at the coliseum on Saturday to cheer
- 1:30:44Speaker 5: on their their classmates and their and their their cheerleaders.
- 1:30:48Speaker 5: So you know that's cool. So you've got Cameron and Muhamma,
- 1:30:51Speaker 5: You've got Double A. Rohan County has never been there.
- 1:30:53Speaker 5: Spencer High School way back in the day had but
- 1:30:56Speaker 5: Rohan County High School never been there. Taking on a
- 1:30:59Speaker 5: very good, very good, very motivated Frankfurt team Triple A,
- 1:31:02Speaker 5: I think is to me the most intriguing matchup. And
- 1:31:04Speaker 5: I'm trying to keep those, by the way, Dave, trying
- 1:31:06Speaker 5: to keep those Bridgeport ties on the d L this. Okay,
- 1:31:09Speaker 5: you know, I don't want the Hoover folks knowing that
- 1:31:12Speaker 5: I have those old Bridgeport times. Tim Brady is from
- 1:31:14Speaker 5: Bridgeport to Bridgeport, Texas Bridgeport text Bridgeport, Connecticut. Yeah, I did.
- 1:31:19Speaker 5: I did Bridgeport High School football on the radio for
- 1:31:22Speaker 5: over a decade before I moved to Charleston. That's a
- 1:31:25Speaker 5: very good football team. This Hoover team is really good too.
- 1:31:27Speaker 5: That's gonna be a great matchup.
- 1:31:28Speaker 4: Yeah, and Hoover.
- 1:31:30Speaker 5: I think the best crowd of the weekend, my guess
- 1:31:33Speaker 5: is gonna be on Saturday at noon when Hoover plays Bridgeport,
- 1:31:36Speaker 5: because I think everybody from the Elk River is going
- 1:31:39Speaker 5: to be in Charlestown at Ladleyfield. And then we've got
- 1:31:42Speaker 5: that other matchup, the one that you talked about. Two
- 1:31:43Speaker 5: schools fifteen miles apart, Spring Millsen and Martinsburg and they
- 1:31:47Speaker 5: played earlier in the year. It's a really good game.
- 1:31:49Speaker 5: So we're expecting for really good games. But when the
- 1:31:51Speaker 5: teams show up, you know, again making it more like
- 1:31:54Speaker 5: a bowl game. The teams that want team meals, we're
- 1:31:58Speaker 5: providing team meals. Some of the hotels are hosting team meals.
- 1:32:02Speaker 5: Buffalo Wild Wings is hosting a team meal. The Eagles
- 1:32:05Speaker 5: Nest at Little Creek Country Club is hosting a team
- 1:32:07Speaker 5: meal for us. So the teams travel, Herbert Hoover is
- 1:32:11Speaker 5: going to take their whole team to uh Solango Law
- 1:32:15Speaker 5: light the night at Gomart Ballpark on Thursday evening and
- 1:32:19Speaker 5: enjoy that as a team. And then when the teams
- 1:32:21Speaker 5: show up, they drop their equipment off before the before
- 1:32:25Speaker 5: the game day, all of their uniforms, their helmets will
- 1:32:28Speaker 5: be shined, their shoes will be shined, their lockers will
- 1:32:30Speaker 5: be hung. We're we're making it like a true bowl
- 1:32:33Speaker 5: game environment. When the teams walk into their locker room,
- 1:32:35Speaker 5: there's a there's a sense of arrival. It's a championship
- 1:32:38Speaker 5: atmosphere for the teams. So even though those two schools
- 1:32:40Speaker 5: from the Eastern Panhandle are very familiar with each other
- 1:32:43Speaker 5: and close together. They show up here and it's really it's.
- 1:32:46Speaker 4: A bowl game atmosphere for them, totally different environment. The

- 1:33:04Speaker 4: Visit Bridge Valley dot eedu slash apprenticeships Today. Let's talk
- 1:33:07Speaker 4: some me logistics. Somebody brought up to me something the
- 1:33:10Speaker 4: other day about parking, because you know we are at
- 1:33:13Speaker 4: lately and the lot of state employees this I'm talking
- 1:33:16Speaker 4: about Friday now, Friday at noon, a lot of state employees,
- 1:33:19Speaker 4: Uh use that facility.
- 1:33:21Speaker 18: What are you?
- 1:33:22Speaker 5: What are we looking at here? As far as parking
- 1:33:23Speaker 5: ghost team, So Friday at noon is really our one
- 1:33:26Speaker 5: parking challenge. You know, anybody from the state that wants
- 1:33:30Speaker 5: to take the day off, I would encourage them. But no,
- 1:33:33Speaker 5: there is there there's still there's still Laidley Field parking. Uh,
- 1:33:38Speaker 5: there is on street parking in the neighborhoods around UH. Lately,
- 1:33:41Speaker 5: there's also UH parking on Washington Street and down toward
- 1:33:48Speaker 5: the east end you can park off of Piedmont there.
- 1:33:53Speaker 5: There's parking available. Friday at noon is going to be
- 1:33:57Speaker 5: a challenge. We do anticipate a big crowd from Muhammad,
- 1:34:00Speaker 5: We do anticipate a big crowd from from Cameron, but
- 1:34:07Speaker 5: we feel like we've got the parking worked out. There
- 1:34:09Speaker 5: will be some signers. They'll be UH Charleston Police officer
- 1:34:12Speaker 5: and Kenall County Sheriff's officer presence in the neighborhood. We
- 1:34:17Speaker 5: do feel like we've got the parking worked out and
- 1:34:19Speaker 5: enough directional signage and traffic direction to get people where
- 1:34:23Speaker 5: they need to be, all.
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: Right and UH And if you're listening to us in
- 1:34:26Speaker 4: any of those areas over in you know where Wahama
- 1:34:29Speaker 4: High School is in Mason County or whatever, carpool It
- 1:34:31Speaker 4: would help us out a whole.
- 1:34:32Speaker 5: Lot if you could. Carpooling would would certainly help.
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: Are they doing team buses?
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: I mean, and the team buses we've got parking office.
- 1:34:42Speaker 5: I'm for fans is what I'm at for the fans.
- 1:34:44Speaker 5: Oh sure, but if if they come in a bus.
- 1:34:46Speaker 5: We've got bus parking off of Hansford Street and then
- 1:34:48Speaker 5: we'll get them in to the stadium from that direction.
- 1:34:53Speaker 4: Okay, let's before we let you go, let's talk about
- 1:34:55Speaker 4: economic impacts of this. I mean, these people are going
- 1:34:58Speaker 4: to come in and you know a lot of them,
- 1:34:59Speaker 4: you know, the people from Hoover and so on, and
- 1:35:01Speaker 4: the driveable, the one that are far from here. They're
- 1:35:04Speaker 4: probably going to go to the game and maybe go
- 1:35:05Speaker 4: back home. But we do hope that they come to
- 1:35:08Speaker 4: downtown Charleston. You mentioned the Selango law light to night. Uh,
- 1:35:11Speaker 4: we do hope that they'll go downtown. And he talking
- 1:35:14Speaker 4: about fans now more players. Obviously some are going to
- 1:35:17Speaker 4: be staying in hotels. Let's talk about economic impact here.
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:35:21Speaker 5: I'll be really interested following the event to run the
- 1:35:24Speaker 5: numbers and see what the real economic impact of this
- 1:35:26Speaker 5: event is.
- 1:35:27Speaker 17: You know.
- 1:35:28Speaker 5: The the one nice thing about having those teams from
- 1:35:30Speaker 5: the Eastern Panhandle, and you know, we've got we've got
- 1:35:33Speaker 5: four teams that qualified for housing under the wvs SEC's formula,
- 1:35:37Speaker 5: and that's Martinsburg, spring Mill, Frankfort and Cameron and they're
- 1:35:40Speaker 5: all all of the teams are staying two nights. We
- 1:35:43Speaker 5: anticipate that their fans are going to come and they're
- 1:35:46Speaker 5: going to at least spend one night in Charleston. I
- 1:35:49Speaker 5: do know that between the Football Championships presented by Toyota
- 1:35:53Speaker 5: and the cheer Championships, that our hotels are full. I
- 1:35:57Speaker 5: mean I spent an hour on the phone yesterday trying
- 1:36:00Speaker 5: to find hotel rooms for the Martinsburg football team because
- 1:36:04Speaker 5: everything was taken up with cheerleading and other things happening
- 1:36:08Speaker 5: in the city. We got it worked out, but hotels
- 1:36:11Speaker 5: are full this weekend. It's going to be a great
- 1:36:13Speaker 5: weekend in the city of Charlestown because you know you
- 1:36:16Speaker 5: mentioned Gomart ballparking light the night. We've got Holly Jolly
- 1:36:19Speaker 5: Brawley going on. There's holiday activities happening at Capital Market
- 1:36:24Speaker 5: Friday and Saturday, and we've got these two massive sporting competitions,
- 1:36:30Speaker 5: high school sporting competitions going on. It's going to be
- 1:36:32Speaker 5: a great weekend in the city of Charleston. All right, Tim,
- 1:36:36Speaker 5: hats off to you and the city and everything that
- 1:36:38Speaker 5: you did in getting this here.
- 1:36:39Speaker 4: Now it's go time.
- 1:36:41Speaker 5: I do want to say, just allow me one more thing, certainly,
- 1:36:44Speaker 5: couldn't do this without the partnership and the support of
- 1:36:47Speaker 5: the City of Charleston.
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: May MARRYM.
- 1:36:48Speaker 5: Goodwin and her staff also want to say, couldn't be
- 1:36:51Speaker 5: done without the Kanall County Board of Education. They actually
- 1:36:54Speaker 5: own Lateley Field. The upgrades that have been done there,
- 1:36:58Speaker 5: press box complete, letely renovated and expanded, locker rooms completely renovated,
- 1:37:05Speaker 5: soup to nuts. They've done a massive amount of work there,
- 1:37:08Speaker 5: including installing a new JumboTron. Those help us, but the
- 1:37:13Speaker 5: football Championships coming here with the impetus to get these
- 1:37:16Speaker 5: improvements made. But they will benefit the community for many
- 1:37:19Speaker 5: many years to come and the kids that grow up
- 1:37:21Speaker 5: here and play on that field. So really have to
- 1:37:24Speaker 5: say thank you to the Canall County Board of Education.
- 1:37:27Speaker 5: I've worked closely with doctor Paula Potter, but I know
- 1:37:30Speaker 5: that the entire board staff has been supportive of this,
- 1:37:34Speaker 5: so really have to thank them for their support and
- 1:37:37Speaker 5: help in this effort.
- 1:37:38Speaker 4: Tim good Luck. I was joking with Tim as we
- 1:37:40Speaker 4: were walking down to steps this morning. I said, Hey,
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: you want to go grab a beer, go grab some
- 1:37:44Speaker 4: launch or something this week because you don't have anything
- 1:37:45Speaker 4: else going on right.
- 1:37:46Speaker 5: Tons of free time this weekend. They just hit me up.

- 1:41:43Speaker 4: I've said, you know with this that this could have

- 1:41:55Speaker 4: but I want to make sure it's done correctly, because

- 1:42:04Speaker 4: something that is very important, is that to be done correctly.
- 1:42:07Speaker 4: I think that's what they're doing this time around. We

- 1:42:44Speaker 4: done because the legislature has added three more magistrates and
- 1:42:47Speaker 4: an additional circuit judge position, and they're simply out of
- 1:42:52Speaker 4: space now. It's going to be discussed at the next
- 1:42:56Speaker 4: County Commission meeting, which will be on Thursday, and again
- 1:42:59Speaker 4: I'm going to have aniche mister Bensolango on the show
- 1:43:01Speaker 4: to talk about it. Do want to get this in here?
- 1:43:03Speaker 4: A little programming note our coverage of high school basketball.
- 1:43:07Speaker 4: Believe it or not, Jeff and I were talking about
- 1:43:09Speaker 4: this earlier. It's that time or high school basketball. Well,
- 1:43:12Speaker 4: college is already underway, but high school basketball gets underway
- 1:43:15Speaker 4: for us. Tonight we will have our first game of
- 1:43:17Speaker 4: the season as Capital. We'll be traveling to South Charleston.
- 1:43:20Speaker 4: Airtime here in WCCHS is at seven o'clock tonight. Interims
- 1:43:24Speaker 4: will continue and we'll wrap up today at the Capitol.
- 1:43:26Speaker 4: One of the things covered yesterday had to do with
- 1:43:29Speaker 4: the behavioral issues in the classrooms.
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:43:32Speaker 4: I remember reading several years ago that in like the
- 1:43:36Speaker 4: nineteen fifties or something, the biggest problems that teachers facing
- 1:43:39Speaker 4: the classrooms were things like talking, guilty party here, chewing gum,
- 1:43:44Speaker 4: dress code violations, etc.
- 1:43:45Speaker 5: Etc.
- 1:43:46Speaker 4: If you have kids or grandkids in public school now,
- 1:43:49Speaker 4: or maybe you know someone who works in the public
- 1:43:51Speaker 4: school system. Now it's a totally different world. And yesterday
- 1:43:56Speaker 4: under the Dome, lawmakers got an earful of what educator
- 1:44:00Speaker 4: face on a daily basis. A little background here, it's
- 1:44:05Speaker 4: believed that this coming session, lawmakers are going to be
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: looking at some bills that would allow elementary school teachers
- 1:44:11Speaker 4: to remove disruptive students from their classrooms. Now, the bill
- 1:44:16Speaker 4: was originally introduced during last year's session, but it kind
- 1:44:19Speaker 4: of got tied up in committees and they had to
- 1:44:22Speaker 4: go back and forth between cent in the House and
- 1:44:23Speaker 4: so on and so forth. They ended up not getting done.
- 1:44:25Speaker 4: They ran out of time. Dave Wilson TJ. Meadows are
- 1:44:27Speaker 4: going to get into this further on talk line today.
- 1:44:29Speaker 4: Some of the instructors told some horrific stories from the
- 1:44:33Speaker 4: classrooms of West Virginia schools yesterday, and I think in
- 1:44:37Speaker 4: talking to TJ and Wilson, they're actually going to plan
- 1:44:40Speaker 4: on playing some of the sound from those. I heard
- 1:44:42Speaker 4: it this morning and yesterday afternoon, just incredible. Educators talked
- 1:44:47Speaker 4: about being spat upon, about having objects thrown at them,
- 1:44:51Speaker 4: being kicked in the face, et cetera, et cetera. You know,
- 1:44:54Speaker 4: every kid is entitled to an education, but something here
- 1:44:58Speaker 4: has got to give. It absolutely has to and a
- 1:45:02Speaker 4: Senate Education Chair Amy Grady, who herself is an elementary teacher,
- 1:45:05Speaker 4: is going to join talk Line to talk about it today.
- 1:45:08Speaker 4: Also on the show today, State Auditor and Attorney General
- 1:45:10Speaker 4: J J. W. Mcuskey, State Democratic Party Chair in Delagate,
- 1:45:12Speaker 4: Mike Pushkin and Marshall hath led the Director, Christian Spears,
- 1:45:15Speaker 4: Brad McIlhenny more All Kaddup with the talk Line with
- 1:45:18Speaker 4: Dave Wilson, TJ meadows Hey. Look TJ's here now, how
- 1:45:20Speaker 4: are you man?
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: What up?
- 1:45:21Speaker 5: Buddy?
