- 0:00Speaker 1: The water closed over Namusa's head, and the cold hit
- 0:03Speaker 1: her like a fist to the chest. She didn't fight it.
- 0:08Speaker 1: She let the mountain take her weight, let the dark
- 0:11Speaker 1: pull her down past the shelf of rock where the
- 0:14Speaker 1: blossoms had rooted, past the roots themselves, thick, pale things
- 0:20Speaker 1: that twisted like veins through the stone. Her lungs burned,
- 0:24Speaker 1: her ears popped, and then, beneath the pressure, she heard it. Again,
- 0:30Speaker 1: the song. It wasn't a melody. It was a vibration,
- 0:34Speaker 1: a hum that moved through her bones and rattled her teeth.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Dozens of voices, layered and overlapping, some singing in languages
- 0:44Speaker 1: she knew and others in tongues that predated language itself.
- 0:49Speaker 1: They weren't calling to her. They were calling to each other,
- 0:53Speaker 1: weaving a net of sound that held something down. something
- 0:57Speaker 1: that thrashed against the notes like a fish in a
- 1:00Speaker 1: gill net. Nomusa opened her eyes. The golden light she'd
- 1:05Speaker 1: seen from the surface was everywhere now, not a door
- 1:09Speaker 1: but a membrane, thin, translucent, stretched across a cavern that
- 1:15Speaker 1: shouldn't exist this deep in the mountain. And on the
- 1:19Speaker 1: other side of that membrane, pressed against it like a
- 1:22Speaker 1: face against glass, was her mother, She was older than
- 1:26Speaker 1: Nomusa remembered, grayer. Her cheeks were hollow, her eyes closed,
- 1:32Speaker 1: her lips moving in a song that had no sound.
- 1:36Speaker 1: But she was there, she was alive, and she was
- 1:40Speaker 1: holding the membrane shut with nothing but her voice and
- 1:43Speaker 1: her will. Nomusa kicked toward her. The water fought her,
- 1:48Speaker 1: thick as syrup, but she clawed her way down until
- 1:51Speaker 1: her palms met the membrane. It was warm. It pulsed,
- 1:56Speaker 1: and when her fingers touched it, her mother's eyes opened.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Go back, her mother mouthed. It's not time. Nomusa shook
- 2:06Speaker 1: her head. She pressed her forehead to the membrane, felt
- 2:09Speaker 1: the hum of the song vibrating through her skull. She
- 2:13Speaker 1: wanted to speak, but her lungs were empty. So she
- 2:17Speaker 1: did the only thing she could think of. She sang.
- 2:21Speaker 1: It wasn't a song she knew. It came from somewhere
- 2:24Speaker 1: below her ribs, from the same place the ache had
- 2:27Speaker 1: lived since her mother disappeared. A single note, raw and cracked,
- 2:33Speaker 1: that pushed through the water and joined the chorus. The
- 2:37Speaker 1: membrane rippled. Her mother's eyes widened, and for one breathless
- 2:42Speaker 1: moment the song faltered. The thing on the other side
- 2:46Speaker 1: surged forward. Nomusa saw it. not with her eyes, but
- 2:51Speaker 1: with the Sangoma sense that lived behind her sternum. A
- 2:55Speaker 1: shape without edges, a hunger without end, it pressed against
- 3:00Speaker 1: the membrane where the song had weakened and the roots
- 3:02Speaker 1: around her screamed. Her mother's voice cut through the chaos. Now, Nomusa, go.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Something grabbed her ankle. Nomusa twisted, kicked, felt her foot
- 3:16Speaker 1: connect with something solid. Hands, real hands, warm and calloused,
- 3:22Speaker 1: closed around her arms and hauled her upward. She broke
- 3:25Speaker 1: the surface with a gasp that turned into a cough,
- 3:28Speaker 1: water streaming from her nose and mouth. Her vision blurred
- 3:32Speaker 1: and burning. Breathe, Thabo said. He was waist deep in
- 3:38Speaker 1: the pool, holding her against his chest, his voice tight
- 3:41Speaker 1: with panic. Breathe, Nomusa. Come on. She coughed until her
- 3:47Speaker 1: ribs ached. The sky above them was the color of
- 3:51Speaker 1: bruised plums, the first hint of dawn bleeding through the peaks.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Mazulu stood at the water's edge, her face pale, her
- 4:00Speaker 1: hands gripping a staff Nomusa hadn't seen before. Carved wood,
- 4:05Speaker 1: wrapped in beads and strips of hide. What did you see?
- 4:09Speaker 1: Mazulu asked. Her voice was steady, but her knuckles were white.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Nomusa spat water. My mother... She's alive. She's holding it shut.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Labo's arms tightened, holding what's shut. The hunger. Nomusa pushed
- 4:26Speaker 1: away from him, found her footing on the submerged shelf.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Her legs shook, but they held. It's not a name, Mazulu.
- 4:35Speaker 1: It's not a spirit. It's a wound. Something the mountain
- 4:39Speaker 1: swallowed a long time ago, and it's been eating its
- 4:43Speaker 1: way out ever since. The Keeper's. My mother. The ones
- 4:48Speaker 1: before her. They've been singing it to sleep. But the
- 4:52Speaker 1: song is breaking down. They're tired. She's tired. Mazulu stepped
- 4:59Speaker 1: into the water, her staff clicking against the stones. Then
- 5:03Speaker 1: we need to reinforce the lock. Find new voices. New keepers. No.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Nomusa wiped her face with the back of her hand.
- 5:14Speaker 1: That's what they've been doing for generations. And it's not working.
- 5:18Speaker 1: The hunger is getting stronger. Feeding it memories just makes
- 5:22Speaker 1: it hungrier. We need to cut it off. Starve it.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Kill it. Thabo let out a sharp breath. You can't
- 5:31Speaker 1: kill a wound, Namusa. You can only heal it. She
- 5:35Speaker 1: looked at him. Really looked at him. And saw something
- 5:40Speaker 1: she hadn't noticed before. His eyes were red-rimmed. His jaw set.
- 5:46Speaker 1: He'd been crying. While she was under the water, while
- 5:50Speaker 1: she was singing with the dead, he'd been up here, terrified,
- 5:54Speaker 1: thinking she wasn't coming back. You're right, she said quietly.
- 6:00Speaker 1: You're right. She turned to Mazulu. The song isn't a lock.
- 6:05Speaker 1: It's a scab. And scabs don't heal if you keep
- 6:08Speaker 1: picking at them. We need to clean the wound. We
- 6:11Speaker 1: need to let it breathe. Mazulu's eyes narrowed. That's dangerous.
- 6:18Speaker 1: If the hunger gets air, it's already getting air, Nomusa said.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Every seed, every memory, every time someone comes to this
- 6:28Speaker 1: pool and offers a piece of themselves, they're feeding it.
- 6:31Speaker 1: The only way to stop it is to stop feeding it.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Let it starve. Let it die. A long silence. The
- 6:39Speaker 1: water lapped against the rocks. Somewhere high above, a bird
- 6:44Speaker 1: called out, sharp. insistent, the first sound of the waking world.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Your mother won't survive that, Mazulu said. If the song ends,
- 6:55Speaker 1: she ends. Nomusa felt the words hit her like a
- 6:59Speaker 1: physical blow. She looked back at the pool, at the
- 7:03Speaker 1: dark water where the golden light had faded. Her mother
- 7:07Speaker 1: was down there, still singing, still holding on. I know,
- 7:12Speaker 1: she said, and then, softer, She knew, too. That's why
- 7:17Speaker 1: she stayed. She knew someone would have to make this
- 7:20Speaker 1: choice eventually. Thabo touched her shoulder. What do we do now?
- 7:26Speaker 1: Nomusa turned away from the pool. The sun was cresting
- 7:29Speaker 1: the ridge now, spilling gold across the rock face, burning
- 7:33Speaker 1: off the last of the mist. The mountain was waking up,
- 7:37Speaker 1: indifferent to the war being fought beneath its skin. We
- 7:42Speaker 1: go home, she said. We gather the others. and we
- 7:46Speaker 1: figure out how to kill a hunger that's been eating
- 7:49Speaker 1: this land for a thousand years. She didn't look back
- 7:53Speaker 1: at the water. She couldn't. But as she climbed the
- 7:56Speaker 1: ridge with Thabo and Mazulu behind her, she felt it.
- 8:01Speaker 1: A single note, rising from the pool, following her up
- 8:05Speaker 1: the mountain. Her mother's voice, singing her goodbye.
