The church of France was ravaged by the heresy of the Albigenses who, not satisfied with teaching false doctrine, pillaged the churches and massacred the priests. In 12/15, Innocent III saw in a dream the tottering walls of Saint John of the Lateran held up by the powerful shoulders of a friar. This friar was Saint Dominic whose preaching was to withstand untruth and error and rekindle the flame of faith in the world.

His mother saw in a vision her child in the shape of a little dog holding a torch in its mouth. Called Dominic because his parents attributed his birth to the prayers of the Holy Benedictine abbot Dominic of Silos. He truly belonged to the Lord as his name suggests. Born in Spain of the noble family of Guzman, he distinguished himself by his purity as is signified by the lily he holds and his white habit. Having witnessed the many evils caused by the heretics in the South Of France, he founded to oppose them the order of the friar's preachers whom he armed with the shield of truth to teach doctrine and the sword of the word to preach it.

The Dominicans numbered many saints of both sexes who, like their founder, ardently studied the word of God and the gospel which, as Saint Dominic says, is the book of truth and the book of charity. This saint loved the Virgin in a special manner and preached the devotion to the rosary. He died on August 6 in the year of our Lord, 1221. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy ghost. Amen.

The introit. Right reason is on the good man's lips. Well weighted are all his counsels. The law of God rules in his heart. Allay thy impatience with the wicked.
• 2:57
Envy not the lot of evildoers. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Right reason is on the good man's lips. Well weighted are all his counsels.
• 3:24
The law of God rules in his heart. The Collect. Let us pray. O God, who hast vouchsafed to illuminate Thy Church with the virtues and teaching of Blessed Dominic, Thy Confessor, grant that by his intercession it may not be destitute of temporal aids and may ever progress in spiritual increase through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.

A lesson from the second letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to Timothy. Dearly beloved, I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus who is to judge the living and the dead and by his appearing and his kingdom. Preach the word. Be urgent in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, and exhort.
• 4:41
Be unfailing in patience and in doctrine. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound doctrine but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths. As for you, always be steady, endure suffering, Do the work of an evangelist. Fulfill your ministry. For I am already being poured out in sacrifice.
• 5:28
The time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day and not only to me but also to all who have loved his advent.

The gradual. The just man shall flourish like the palm tree. In the house of the Lord he shall grow to greatness, like the cedars of Lebanon, to proclaim thy mercy in the morning, and thy truth in the night. Alleluia. Alleluia.
• 6:25
The just shall spring as the lily and flourish forever before the Lord. Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At that time Jesus said to his disciples, Your loins must be girt and your lamps burning, and you yourselves like men awaiting their master's return from a wedding feast, so that they may open to him at once when he comes and knocks at the door. Blessed are those servants whom their master will find watching when he comes.
• 7:09
I promise you, he will gird himself and make them sit down to meet and minister to them. Whether he comes in the second quarter of the night or in the third, blessed are those servants if he finds them alert. Be sure of this. If the master of the house had known at what time the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and not allowed his house to be broken open. You too, then, must stand ready.
• 7:46
For at what hour you think not, the Son of Man will come. The Offertory. My truth and my mercy shall be with him, and in my name shall his horn be exalted. The secret. Sanctify, O Lord, the gifts dedicated to you, that by the merits of blessed Dominic, thy confessor, they may profit for our healing through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.

Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee, while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory.
• 9:32
Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. He is a faithful and wise steward, whom the Lord setteth over his family, to give them their measure of wheat in due season.
• 10:00
The post communion. Let us pray. Grant we beseech thee, O Almighty God, that we who are borne down by the weight of our sins may be sustained by the patronage of blessed Dominic, thy confessor, through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
