- 0:00Speaker 1: Show me the money.
- 0:12Speaker 2: All right, let's get in.
- 0:14Speaker 3: It is such a great clip that not for profit
- 0:16Speaker 3: New York Yankees. But they are shopping this offseason.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Don't you worry?
- 0:21Speaker 4: Uh.
- 0:22Speaker 3: The latest report from John Hayman about their their goals
- 0:29Speaker 3: this offseason in the outfield, he says, right now, they
- 0:32Speaker 3: appear to view ready for this Kyle Tucker as the
- 0:37Speaker 3: backup plan to Cody Bellinger rather than the other way around.
- 0:42Speaker 3: So they are looking to try and bring Cody Bellinger back.
- 0:46Speaker 3: They clearly liked him. He's a known commodity, there's defensive versatility,
- 0:51Speaker 3: great athlete, not the Tucker isn't. But they know what
- 0:54Speaker 3: they're getting. Not to mention he's gonna cost I would
- 0:57Speaker 3: say significantly less, and if that doesn't work out, suddenly
- 1:01Speaker 3: they will go after Kyle Tucker. To me, I actually
- 1:04Speaker 3: think there is something to read into here. For example, Kratz,
- 1:09Speaker 3: if the Yankees think these two players are pretty close, yeah,
- 1:13Speaker 3: I think Bellinger would be a better value for them
- 1:15Speaker 3: if they know him, they like him, and he's going
- 1:18Speaker 3: to cost less.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't.
- 1:21Speaker 5: I don't see. I don't see how you can bring
- 1:25Speaker 5: the argument any other way, because except for the fact
- 1:29Speaker 5: that some teams are enamored, and I don't think the
- 1:31Speaker 5: Yankees need to be enamored with age, the fact that
- 1:34Speaker 5: Tucker is two years younger than Bellinger, the fact that
- 1:38Speaker 5: you know, you would have a few more years of
- 1:40Speaker 5: his quote prime. But the Yankees are always looking for
- 1:44Speaker 5: like this year, what is he going to bring this year?
- 1:48Speaker 5: And to me, there's less. There's less in free agency.
- 1:51Speaker 5: There's so many question marks. Ooh, is you know? Is
- 1:54Speaker 5: he injury prone? Is he going to be able to
- 1:56Speaker 5: handle this market? How does he fit into the clubhouse?
- 1:59Speaker 5: All that stuff It's already been answered for Bellinger. So yes,
- 2:04Speaker 5: he would be a free agent, But no, you don't
- 2:06Speaker 5: have those fears, or you don't have that trepidation of
- 2:12Speaker 5: bringing somebody in there. You're like, I'm not sure how
- 2:14Speaker 5: he's gonna fit just because you don't know nothing against Tucker.
- 2:16Speaker 5: You just don't know, you know how Bellinger's going to
- 2:20Speaker 5: fit in and has fit into this clubhouse, and he
- 2:24Speaker 5: is definitely a lot more versatile.
- 2:29Speaker 1: We're negotiating here for a free agent, right, So what
- 2:33Speaker 1: do the Yankees want to do if they're they want
- 2:35Speaker 1: to get the guy for cheaper? So what do they say? Oh, Kyle,
- 2:38Speaker 1: We're not really Yeah, you don't really fit here. We're
- 2:41Speaker 1: gonna go Cody Bellinger. So but you know, if you
- 2:44Speaker 1: take Glass and calm here, we'll take you because you're
- 2:47Speaker 1: not really are for Come on, dude, And the Yankees
- 2:49Speaker 1: aren't gonna be profitable. Come on, The Yankees are so
- 2:52Speaker 1: profitable because of Yes network and because everywhere you go
- 2:55Speaker 1: in the world. I've been all around the world. Guess
- 2:57Speaker 1: what two hats you see more than any other hats
- 3:00Speaker 1: in LA in the New York Yankees hat in every color.
- 3:04Speaker 1: People that don't even know what baseball is are wearing
- 3:07Speaker 1: a New York and a Dodgers hat. So don't give
- 3:10Speaker 1: me they're gonna be profitable. But hell, you're not George.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Try to be like George. Like we just talked about
- 3:15Speaker 1: Zach Britton, go out if you want Kyle Tucker, just
- 3:17Speaker 1: go out and sign him, because that's what George would do.
- 3:19Speaker 1: By the way, it's been since two thousand and nine,
- 3:21Speaker 1: since y'all one just saying two thousand and nine, that
- 3:24Speaker 1: is a lifetime for a Yankee fan.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Hey, jar, they're a better team if they signed Tucker
- 3:30Speaker 5: over Bellinger.
- 3:33Speaker 1: It depends. Yeah, I think I think Kyle Tucker at
- 3:36Speaker 1: the end of the day, is a better player over
- 3:38Speaker 1: the long haul of a contract that they're gonna have
- 3:40Speaker 1: to sign him to. And I think Tucker is a
- 3:42Speaker 1: better player right now. But the question is health. If
- 3:45Speaker 1: Kyle Tucker's healthy and he's engaged, absolutely they're a better team.
- 3:49Speaker 1: But there's always if. There's this with every free agent contract.
- 3:52Speaker 1: There's ifs with Dyllancy's, there's IFFs with Juan Soto, there's
- 3:55Speaker 1: ifs with every person show. Hey what a show. He
- 3:57Speaker 1: wasn't gonna pitch. Remember we asked that question. He came
- 3:59Speaker 1: back and pitched. There's ifs with every free agent country.
- 4:02Speaker 1: If you want the player, go get him. You're the Yankees.
- 4:05Speaker 5: But as the team is constructed right now, Kyle Tucker
- 4:10Speaker 5: in right field, is their value there for the Yankees
- 4:14Speaker 5: to move Aaron Judge to take Kyle Tucker, who this
- 4:18Speaker 5: year had a below average defensive year based on the numbers,
- 4:22Speaker 5: he can have an above average, but he'll never be elite.
- 4:24Speaker 5: You're putting him in a new position.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Is Kyle Tucker will never be a leader in right field?
- 4:30Speaker 5: No, no, no, no. I didn't say he's never been.
- 4:33Speaker 5: He's never been elite in right field Kyle Tucker. Yeah,
- 4:37Speaker 5: does he have a gold Glove?
- 4:40Speaker 1: He's been a finalist.
- 4:42Speaker 5: Based on the numbers, He's never been elite in right field.
- 4:46Speaker 1: He's won a goal glove in twenty twenty two, so
- 4:49Speaker 1: he's been pretty damn elite at some point.
- 4:52Speaker 5: The best numbers that he ever had defensively, he was
- 4:54Speaker 5: a zero point four war player in right field. That's
- 4:58Speaker 5: his best. I'm sorry, I'm as right. Twenty two, twenty
- 5:01Speaker 5: two when he won his goal glove. There's a one
- 5:03Speaker 5: point one ward defensively a right field.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Is that elite? I don't even know what that Yeah.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Wait, hold on, let me bring me in sec that
- 5:12Speaker 2: one period he.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Just said he's never going to be elite, which he
- 5:15Speaker 1: just He's won a Gold Glove and he's elite. So
- 5:17Speaker 1: I don't understand what the argument is here. He's young.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Between here twenty twenty two, he was elite.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Eight run value on that's above average for stat cast
- 5:27Speaker 3: is elite. But since then minus four two zero, So
- 5:33Speaker 3: I see what Kratz is saying. But he's also been
- 5:35Speaker 3: hurt defender the.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Last two years. He's been hurt, So you throw those out, okay,
- 5:40Speaker 1: But to me, Yes, So you'd rather have Cody Bellinger
- 5:43Speaker 1: in center field or first base then Kyle Tucker. Kyle Tucker,
- 5:49Speaker 1: I mean, does Kyle Tucker make you better? I mean,
- 5:52Speaker 1: you're gonna have Grisham, right, Grisham took the qualifying offer,
- 5:55Speaker 1: so he's on the team. He's going to be your
- 5:57Speaker 1: center fielder. Can you move Kyle Tucker to left? Keep
- 6:00Speaker 1: judging right? Or do you move judge to left? Maybe
- 6:03Speaker 1: try to keep the old a little more healthy? I
- 6:06Speaker 1: don't know, but I think Kyle Tucker makes him a
- 6:08Speaker 1: better team.
- 6:08Speaker 5: Absolutely, Yeah, I agree.
- 6:11Speaker 2: I agree that you should get how much of a
- 6:12Speaker 2: difference is it? Yeah, because Bellinger's really good out there.
- 6:15Speaker 2: The question is how much of a difference is it?
- 6:17Speaker 3: Right, If Kyle Tucker ends up getting let's just throw
- 6:19Speaker 3: random numbers out there, four hundred million, and Bellinger ends
- 6:22Speaker 3: up getting two hundred million, I think the Yankees brass
- 6:25Speaker 3: is like, yeah, we'll take Bellinger.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Okay, And that's their decision. It depends on also the
- 6:31Speaker 1: link of the contract, right, So I mean that's their decision.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I get that part, but that wasn't The question to
- 6:36Speaker 1: me was who's a better player. The better player is
- 6:39Speaker 1: Kyle Tucker. If there's always I if Cody Bellinger didn't
- 6:43Speaker 1: hurt his shoulder that one year was you know, he's
- 6:45Speaker 1: won an MVP, So yeah, he's younger. Yes, I get
- 6:49Speaker 1: all that, but there's so many ifs when it comes
- 6:51Speaker 1: to free agency. At the end of the day, if
- 6:52Speaker 1: you want the player, go fucking get him.
- 6:55Speaker 5: But I I but I would say this statement of
- 7:01Speaker 5: who like if you're putting because every player has has
- 7:04Speaker 5: a value and nobody's gonna I don't think anybody's gonna
- 7:07Speaker 5: deny the fact that Tucker is a better player than Bellinger,
- 7:11Speaker 5: and he's younger, all that stuff, but the fit on
- 7:14Speaker 5: the team, how it goes. Anybody can get injured. I
- 7:17Speaker 5: get all that stuff. I'm not bringing any of that up.
- 7:19Speaker 5: It's more of is he that much better for the
- 7:25Speaker 5: extra money that you're gonna pay, and how he fits
- 7:28Speaker 5: on the team, where he's going to fit on the team,
- 7:30Speaker 5: and what's that. You know, maybe he does go and
- 7:33Speaker 5: play left field like great, cool, But all of this
- 7:37Speaker 5: saying this, if the Yankees are out, how much does
- 7:41Speaker 5: that hurt his free agency? Kyle Tucker's free agency because
- 7:45Speaker 5: you need to the tango. They're not out. They're not
- 7:48Speaker 5: out yet, but Cody bellingerdo at some point.
- 7:53Speaker 1: This is all negotiation, all negotiation, all negotiation. It's all negotiation.
- 7:59Speaker 1: House and the Yankees have probably told John Hyman, hey,
- 8:03Speaker 1: put this out there so maybe he'll lower his price,
- 8:05Speaker 1: we can get him cheaper or make another team bid
- 8:07Speaker 1: on him because they think we're out or whatever. But
- 8:09Speaker 1: at the end of the day, they're not. Until I
- 8:11Speaker 1: see someone else sign this guy, They're not out on them.
- 8:13Speaker 1: This is all negotiation. This is this has been negotiating
- 8:16Speaker 1: one oh one. Hey, let's throw it out there. Though
- 8:18Speaker 1: we don't want the guy, so that he everyone in
- 8:20Speaker 1: the media thinks we don't want him, and boom, we
- 8:22Speaker 1: get them. I mean, it's the way they do it.
- 8:24Speaker 1: It's smart. It's smart, it's smart.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Yeah, there's just a big money difference between what these
- 8:33Speaker 3: two players are going to end up getting.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Maybe maybe not.
- 8:35Speaker 1: We don't know that until they sign. We don't know that.
- 8:38Speaker 1: We don't Maybe they can get Kyle Tucker to sign
- 8:40Speaker 1: a one year deal to go to New York and
- 8:42Speaker 1: have another great year and play healthy. Maybe they can
- 8:44Speaker 1: get them. I don't know. We don't know. Until someone signs.
- 8:47Speaker 1: We don't know never. You didn't. You weren't shaking your
- 8:49Speaker 1: head about Pete a lonzo like that. Last year you
- 8:50Speaker 1: sign a one year deal, Alex pregnant one year deal.
- 8:53Speaker 1: These are all guys that you didn't say. Oh no, no, no,
- 8:55Speaker 1: that don't ever happen. Guess what they both had it
- 8:57Speaker 1: happen to him, Kyle Tucker coming off to you being injured. No, no, no,
- 9:01Speaker 1: no no. Maybe there's a one year, forty five million
- 9:04Speaker 1: dollar deal out there. He's like, you know what, I
- 9:06Speaker 1: can go rebuild my value in York. Or I can
- 9:08Speaker 1: hit a ton of home runs because it's a short
- 9:10Speaker 1: porch on both lines, and I can stay healthy. I
- 9:13Speaker 1: don't know. We don't know until I see him sign.
- 9:15Speaker 1: We don't know. Cody Bellinger did it. Hell, he did
- 9:18Speaker 1: it twice with the Cubs.
- 9:21Speaker 3: That's true, that's true. Yeah, it's not crazy. It's happened
- 9:23Speaker 3: before where we are shocked. And yes, sometimes they have
- 9:27Speaker 3: quote insurance behind them where they're longer guarantees, but the
- 9:31Speaker 3: opt outs are very enticing, so they're most likely to
- 9:35Speaker 3: play for a season prove their value, and the opt
- 9:38Speaker 3: outs almost serve as insurance in case the player gets
- 9:40Speaker 3: hurt or drastically underperforms.
- 9:42Speaker 2: But anyway, it should be interesting.
- 9:43Speaker 3: We'll keep following this and maybe something will happen during
- 9:46Speaker 3: the winter meetings where one of them signs and then
- 9:48Speaker 3: that creates a lot more leverage for the other player.
- 9:51Speaker 3: You would think that Bellinger is going to wait it
- 9:54Speaker 3: out and his camp for Kyle Tucker to sign first.
- 9:57Speaker 3: And it's two different agencies, right, so you would think
- 9:59Speaker 3: that will happen.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Do you guys think that will happen?
- 10:02Speaker 1: Right?
- 10:02Speaker 3: Because Tucker is technically rated higher by most run offices
- 10:05Speaker 3: of course, So do you think if.
- 10:06Speaker 1: He gets a deal he wants?
- 10:08Speaker 6: Right?
- 10:08Speaker 1: No, why it gets a deal that he wants? If
- 10:11Speaker 1: if Boris, I'm pretty sure he's a Boris guy. If
- 10:13Speaker 1: Boris gets a deal in cot and uh Clay Cody,
- 10:17Speaker 1: Bellinger's like, yeah, I want there, and I want to
- 10:19Speaker 1: go back to the Yankees and they're offering me a
- 10:20Speaker 1: deal I want Heck, yeah, he'll sign if Because then
- 10:25Speaker 1: here's the thing is, let's say the Yankees do sign
- 10:28Speaker 1: Tucker and then Bellinger's like, man, I really wanted to
- 10:30Speaker 1: go back there. Why didn't I just take the deal
- 10:32Speaker 1: they offered me? So there's so many things that go
- 10:34Speaker 1: into This is not I wish it was plug and
- 10:35Speaker 1: play blah blah blah blah.
- 10:36Speaker 2: But it's not.
- 10:37Speaker 1: It's not fantasy baseball. It's not retisserie baseball like he's
- 10:39Speaker 1: call it. There's there's there's things in people's mind that
- 10:43Speaker 1: have to happen.
- 10:46Speaker 3: I have a unique holiday gift idea. It is called

- 11:47Speaker 3: got Zach Britton joining us right now. Former All Star
- 11:49Speaker 3: pitcher in the Biggs and knows and pays close attention
- 11:53Speaker 3: to what's going on with the Oriole, So good timing
- 11:55Speaker 3: to have them on.
- 11:55Speaker 2: First off, Zach, how you doing, man.
- 11:57Speaker 6: I'm doing great. How are you guys?
- 11:59Speaker 2: Good? Good, Good to see you.
- 12:01Speaker 3: I'll go right to what you tweeted about with Ryan Helsley.
- 12:04Speaker 3: So what do you think of this signing as someone
- 12:05Speaker 3: who can definitely speak very well to you know, closing
- 12:08Speaker 3: and relieving in big spots for Baltimore.
- 12:12Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it's good.
- 12:13Speaker 4: I think, you know, especially if you don't want to
- 12:15Speaker 4: pay an Edwin Diaz to come over, which I think
- 12:19Speaker 4: they have other needs, right, so you're not gonna spend
- 12:22Speaker 4: all those dollars on to bring in a closer, you know.
- 12:25Speaker 6: At that level.
- 12:26Speaker 4: But Elsley, I think if you look back in his career,
- 12:29Speaker 4: I mean he's a top closer in the game for
- 12:33Speaker 4: the better part of his career. And then he got
- 12:35Speaker 4: traded over the Mets, and anybody that's been traded, you
- 12:38Speaker 4: know mid season, you know, sometimes you just don't really
- 12:41Speaker 4: get into a groove or you don't settle into the
- 12:43Speaker 4: new team or what maybe he's setting up now, you know,
- 12:46Speaker 4: that's something a little different. So I think it's a
- 12:49Speaker 4: good it's a good ad. It's not like it's a
- 12:52Speaker 4: cheap ad, right, I mean, I think he's getting paid
- 12:54Speaker 4: closer money to come over there and close. But I
- 12:57Speaker 4: think he's a sneaky guy that has an nice big
- 13:00Speaker 4: bounce back here.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Zach. By the way, since the first time we've had
- 13:04Speaker 1: you on, you've changed, man. You got the special mic.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Now you got like your own podcast room. Like you've changed.
- 13:10Speaker 1: But that's fine. But what do you think this does
- 13:13Speaker 1: for the Orioles? Is this just the beginning of their
- 13:16Speaker 1: moves for the off season? Are they actually because we
- 13:19Speaker 1: all want them to go all in, please throw all
- 13:22Speaker 1: your money at I mean throw at all at people
- 13:24Speaker 1: to make this team better because they have the core,
- 13:28Speaker 1: they have a core of guys. Will they make the move?
- 13:31Speaker 1: Hailesley's a nice signing, but will they make the move
- 13:33Speaker 1: to actually make this team better?
- 13:37Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 13:37Speaker 4: You would hope so right. I mean with the new ownership,
- 13:39Speaker 4: I think that was the feeling. You know, that's obviously
- 13:43Speaker 4: a different ownership group from when I was there and
- 13:45Speaker 4: when I was traded, but you know, kind of the
- 13:48Speaker 4: vibe with the new ownership group is like, hey, this
- 13:50Speaker 4: is our shot. We got a good young core, let's
- 13:52Speaker 4: add to it. We'll go and make some big signings.
- 13:55Speaker 4: And I definitely think there's still that opportunity. They need
- 13:59Speaker 4: some some guys in the starting rotation. They have a
- 14:02Speaker 4: couple of good pieces right now. I like Rodgers, I
- 14:06Speaker 4: like Bradish. I think those guys can be in any rotation,
- 14:11Speaker 4: top of the rotation and any maybe not the Dodgers
- 14:14Speaker 4: right but close basically any team in baseball. Those guys
- 14:17Speaker 4: are or towards the top of a rotation. So they're
- 14:20Speaker 4: sitting pretty there this bullpen piece. You know, they need
- 14:22Speaker 4: to add a few there too, but I think at
- 14:24Speaker 4: top of the rotation starter.
- 14:25Speaker 6: Is what they need.
- 14:26Speaker 4: And like you said, that young core is gonna get expensive.
- 14:29Speaker 4: You're quick, especially if they you know, perform at a
- 14:31Speaker 4: high level. And so the question is, you know, how
- 14:34Speaker 4: short is that window if you're willing to lock some
- 14:38Speaker 4: guys up. Then I think the window like expands, right,
- 14:40Speaker 4: but you know they haven't really shown that yet. But
- 14:45Speaker 4: it's also it takes two to to get those long
- 14:48Speaker 4: term deals done, and those guys are especially like a Gunner,
- 14:52Speaker 4: he's represented by Boris, which typically doesn't get deals done
- 14:56Speaker 4: before free agency.
- 14:58Speaker 5: Right. I want to get to the rest of the
- 15:00Speaker 5: Orioles team, but first I have to get in my
- 15:02Speaker 5: Hellsley question, because you kind of did it a little
- 15:06Speaker 5: bit obviously not on the same scale that Hellsley did
- 15:09Speaker 5: it in a sense where your free agent year, your
- 15:11Speaker 5: platform year, didn't go as well as elite level as
- 15:16Speaker 5: you were before. That is there a thing to that?
- 15:18Speaker 5: Is there a thing? Because when you're talking about the
- 15:20Speaker 5: Orioles fans looking at it like, oh, great, did we
- 15:22Speaker 5: get a guy who's who's who's on the down who's
- 15:26Speaker 5: on the downslope now of his career because you then
- 15:29Speaker 5: went to the Yankees in your free agent contract and
- 15:32Speaker 5: absolutely balled out with like one eras back to like
- 15:36Speaker 5: your almost your peak. Nobody's better than your peak when
- 15:39Speaker 5: you had like a point five or whatever. But like,
- 15:42Speaker 5: is there something to that free agent year that can
- 15:46Speaker 5: get in a closer's head.
- 15:51Speaker 6: Yeah, I think so, I guess. I guess for the question.
- 15:55Speaker 4: For me, I was coming off of, you know, a
- 15:57Speaker 4: ruptured Achilles uh, like really bad timing. I mean, let's
- 16:02Speaker 4: pick a terrible injury and then just put it right
- 16:05Speaker 4: in my free agent year. And then so I only
- 16:07Speaker 4: came back about a month before I got traded to
- 16:10Speaker 4: New York, and yeah, I was not anywhere near the
- 16:14Speaker 4: level I had prior I had been prior, and so yeah,
- 16:17Speaker 4: in my head, I'm traded, I'm like still trying to
- 16:20Speaker 4: figure out this Achilles thing. Is this a thing that
- 16:22Speaker 4: you know teams long term are going to think is
- 16:25Speaker 4: gonna be an issue?
- 16:26Speaker 6: My performance isn't at the same level.
- 16:29Speaker 4: You know, I finished strong to that year and in
- 16:32Speaker 4: September had an okay playoffs nothing great, But yeah, absolutely,
- 16:38Speaker 4: there's no doubt. I think with mine, it was a
- 16:39Speaker 4: known injury and then I came back and the performance
- 16:42Speaker 4: got better as the season went. With Hellsley, I think
- 16:47Speaker 4: it's it's the opposite, right he kind of he didn't
- 16:49Speaker 4: finish on a high note. There was no injury that
- 16:51Speaker 4: you know, anybody knows about. So if he's healthy, I
- 16:56Speaker 4: just think going into a different role not closing having
- 16:59Speaker 4: to kind of alter your routine going to New York.
- 17:04Speaker 4: Anybody that's played in New York knows if you don't
- 17:06Speaker 4: get going, you know, if you don't start out of
- 17:09Speaker 4: the gate hot. I mean, those fans are gonna let
- 17:10Speaker 4: you know about it. The meetia is gonna let you
- 17:12Speaker 4: know about it.
- 17:13Speaker 6: And it's hard.
- 17:13Speaker 4: We've played with guys that are elite going to New York, struggle,
- 17:19Speaker 4: have a hard time bouncing back, and then they leave
- 17:21Speaker 4: and they're right back to be an elite.
- 17:23Speaker 6: So for me, I I.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Want to bet on the track record and assume if
- 17:30Speaker 4: he's healthy that just his time in New York was
- 17:33Speaker 4: just you know, a small blimp on the radar.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Right, what year did you go?
- 17:38Speaker 4: You went to twenty eighteen to New York? Right, twenty eighteen? Yeah,
- 17:41Speaker 4: you're for sure? Yeah, traded, yeah, twenty Yeah, traded in
- 17:44Speaker 4: twenty eighteen.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Okay, I'll just make it sure because we're just talking
- 17:49Speaker 1: Blue Jays and I don't want to bring up the
- 17:50Speaker 1: Blue Jays to you, so sorry. But Hellsley, Uh, Hellsley
- 18:00Speaker 1: came out and said, oh I was tipping and I
- 18:02Speaker 1: was too predictable. Dude, he's got two pitches, Like, how
- 18:04Speaker 1: predictable can you beat? You throw two? Like you throw
- 18:06Speaker 1: one pitch every time my face. You're like, I'm like
- 18:09Speaker 1: this dude's gonna throw me a sinker and I can't
- 18:11Speaker 1: hit it, so I'm just literally hoping I don't hit
- 18:13Speaker 1: it into a double plan thirty coues.
- 18:15Speaker 6: Right, Yeah, but do you like you're so regurgitated?
- 18:17Speaker 1: Right?
- 18:17Speaker 6: Is that like regurgitated from That's kind of my question
- 18:20Speaker 6: for you.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Is gonna be is like, oh be because I got hit,
- 18:23Speaker 1: I was tipping or they found like my love was
- 18:26Speaker 1: here instead of here, right like, and then oh that
- 18:29Speaker 1: you only have two pitches, so I'm predictable. Is that
- 18:31Speaker 1: really a thing for reliever because most relievers really only
- 18:34Speaker 1: have two pitches anyways.
- 18:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it depends on the guy. I mean,
- 18:38Speaker 4: you talk to some hitters, you know. I remember going
- 18:41Speaker 4: over to New York and they were, you know, hey,
- 18:45Speaker 4: when you throw your slider, like I used to do
- 18:47Speaker 4: this like three pump thing when I would throw my
- 18:49Speaker 4: sinker like that's just me coming set and every now
- 18:51Speaker 4: and then I do like a three and a half pump.
- 18:53Speaker 6: And I was like, Okay, that's cool.
- 18:55Speaker 4: And then I looked at my numbers again that they
- 18:57Speaker 4: had against my slider, they're god awful. So I was like, well,
- 19:00Speaker 4: that didn't really work. And then everyone knows that I'm
- 19:03Speaker 4: throwing a fastball, so that doesn't matter. So I think
- 19:05Speaker 4: a lot of times the tipping is something you know
- 19:07Speaker 4: that you'll hear from some of the analysts that come
- 19:09Speaker 4: down the clubhouse and they'll be like, hey, like, we
- 19:12Speaker 4: think you're tipping, right because they shouldn't be hitting you
- 19:15Speaker 4: like this because all your other underlying numbers are still
- 19:18Speaker 4: pretty much you, but you're getting hit for some reason.
- 19:21Speaker 4: So at least in my experience, I feel like a
- 19:24Speaker 4: lot of the times, not all the time.
- 19:26Speaker 6: Tipping is kind of just like a regurgitated thing.
- 19:29Speaker 4: Guys here from somebody you know on the analytic team
- 19:35Speaker 4: and they come down to try to because they can't
- 19:36Speaker 4: figure out, you know why. So it's kind of like, hey, like,
- 19:40Speaker 4: you're really good, you're just tipping. So if you don't tip,
- 19:42Speaker 4: then you're going to be go right back to being
- 19:43Speaker 4: really good.
- 19:44Speaker 6: But I don't know the.
- 19:45Speaker 4: Ins and outs of his tip, right, I could watch
- 19:48Speaker 4: video and maybe figure it out. But there's guys like
- 19:50Speaker 4: Garrett Cole, Right, he'll do some stuff tipping, and you
- 19:54Speaker 4: know when he addressed it, you know, the numbers got better.
- 19:58Speaker 4: I don't know if it's a mental thing or or what,
- 20:00Speaker 4: but yeah, it works for some guys. I don't really
- 20:03Speaker 4: believe in it, just because I threw one pitch and
- 20:06Speaker 4: if that's not tipping, I don't know what is.
- 20:10Speaker 6: KP.
- 20:11Speaker 3: The website is Chubbyshorts dot com. The brand is Chubbies,

- 21:11Speaker 5: All Right, we figured out, yeah, yeah, your your pitch
- 21:15Speaker 5: was Mariana's pitch. He just did it a little bit longer.
- 21:18Speaker 5: But I have a little Zach Britton trivia here. Do
- 21:20Speaker 5: you know how many big leg starts you have? Starts
- 21:24Speaker 5: starts in the show?
- 21:31Speaker 6: I don't look at that.
- 21:33Speaker 5: When you went to Free Agency, did they ever talk
- 21:35Speaker 5: about starting, Because hell's ley, all of a sudden they
- 21:37Speaker 5: started dropping this out here. You only had one pitch.
- 21:40Speaker 5: At least he had two pitches, so he had a
- 21:42Speaker 5: whole repertoire. You had just a whatever. A single pitch
- 21:45Speaker 5: is a unitoire.
- 21:48Speaker 4: I think I was gonna have to pay teams if
- 21:50Speaker 4: I wanted to start. I think it would have been
- 21:51Speaker 4: that way in more of that conversation. No, that that
- 21:54Speaker 4: never got brought up to me. After I went to
- 21:56Speaker 4: the pen my first year closing this Nope. Start never
- 22:00Speaker 4: got brought up to me.
- 22:00Speaker 5: Again, do you think do you think there was ever
- 22:03Speaker 5: there was ever any real I mean, obviously we hear
- 22:06Speaker 5: about the Tigers. We're looking at Hellsley as a starter.
- 22:09Speaker 5: Do you ever think do you think there's anything real
- 22:11Speaker 5: with that based on what he's done in his career
- 22:14Speaker 5: and his repertoire or was it just a you know
- 22:18Speaker 5: what that'll probably increase your value a little bit in
- 22:21Speaker 5: the free agent market.
- 22:24Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, a part of me thinks that might
- 22:26Speaker 4: be you know, his agent, you know, putting something out there.
- 22:30Speaker 6: Maybe, Hey, this guy is he's capable, he's willing to
- 22:32Speaker 6: be a starter.
- 22:33Speaker 4: Maybe one team brought it up and then you kind
- 22:35Speaker 4: of you kind of snowballs. But when you look at
- 22:39Speaker 4: some of the Clay Holmes is like a perfect example
- 22:42Speaker 4: for me.
- 22:42Speaker 6: I mean, anybody that played with Clay Holmes and watched.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Him spin the baseball in the bullpen knew that he's got,
- 22:47Speaker 4: you know, multiple elite pitches or you know, extremely good pitches,
- 22:53Speaker 4: And it wasn't far fetch to see him go to
- 22:55Speaker 4: the Mets and be a good starter if you watched
- 22:58Speaker 4: him on a day to day basis and kind of
- 23:00Speaker 4: knowing his mentality too. But I think just because it
- 23:04Speaker 4: works for one guy doesn't mean it's gonna work for everybody.
- 23:06Speaker 6: I think a guy like Kelsley.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Is you know when you see him throw, you know,
- 23:10Speaker 4: elite fastball, elite slider, you're this guy. I mean, this
- 23:14Speaker 4: guy's closing games. I'm not so sure his value would
- 23:18Speaker 4: have been increased at all by being a starter. I
- 23:21Speaker 4: don't see that with him.
- 23:23Speaker 1: So what do you think it is? Do you think
- 23:25Speaker 1: it's that easy? Do you think teams just look at
- 23:26Speaker 1: Clay Holmes and say, oh, we can make a cool
- 23:29Speaker 1: closer with a sinker like you were a starter? Like
- 23:32Speaker 1: why do you why do you think, like, oh, Helsley
- 23:34Speaker 1: has two pitches, he those one hundred, we can make
- 23:36Speaker 1: him a starter. Do you think it's easier said than
- 23:39Speaker 1: done to do that, because I think most bullpen guys
- 23:43Speaker 1: like yourself were failed starters, right, and then they became
- 23:47Speaker 1: closers because they had one or two pitches that were
- 23:49Speaker 1: unbelievably good. Do you think it's that easy just to
- 23:52Speaker 1: be like, oh, you know what, I'm going to become
- 23:54Speaker 1: a starter again because oh it's so easy.
- 23:57Speaker 4: No, it's it's absolutely a lot harder to sustain success
- 24:02Speaker 4: as a starter.
- 24:05Speaker 6: You know.
- 24:05Speaker 4: I think it was like myself, Andrew Miller, Wade Davis
- 24:08Speaker 4: were kind of around the same time where we transitioned
- 24:10Speaker 4: to the bullpen.
- 24:12Speaker 6: And yeah, if you look at I think.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Wade Wade Andrew had a lot more success as a
- 24:17Speaker 4: starter than I did. But yeah, typically you try the
- 24:20Speaker 4: guy out as a starter, you move him to the pen,
- 24:23Speaker 4: not really vice versa. But I think it just shows
- 24:25Speaker 4: that teams are really struggling to find starting pitching. And
- 24:30Speaker 4: so if you have a guy like Clay Holmes, they
- 24:33Speaker 4: you know, you watch every single day. This is probably
- 24:36Speaker 4: something internally the Yankees discussed. I would think that this
- 24:38Speaker 4: guy's capable of being a starter. I'm not I can't
- 24:41Speaker 4: remember if I ever heard it there, but no one
- 24:45Speaker 4: was surprised when he went to the Mets and they
- 24:46Speaker 4: made him a starter, you know. And Carlos Mendoza was
- 24:49Speaker 4: in New York, so you know, that could have been
- 24:52Speaker 4: something that he brought up to them too. Hey go
- 24:54Speaker 4: get this guy and let's see if you know, we
- 24:57Speaker 4: can make him into a starter, because he's got the
- 24:58Speaker 4: pitch arsenal to do it.
- 25:01Speaker 5: This is no shade to Taylor Ward. But are you
- 25:05Speaker 5: surprised that the Orioles gave up essentially on Grayson Rodriguez.
- 25:13Speaker 6: You know, I think.
- 25:17Speaker 4: I think the one thing with Ward is right, he's
- 25:19Speaker 4: been healthy, you know what, you're gonna get at him
- 25:23Speaker 4: for the most part. Hopefully he's a little bit of
- 25:27Speaker 4: a veteran presence in that clubhouse with a bunch of
- 25:29Speaker 4: young guys. I think he reinforces that lineup.
- 25:33Speaker 6: A little bit.
- 25:34Speaker 4: With Grayson, it's, you know, the guy could be he
- 25:38Speaker 4: can be a multi time All Star. He could be,
- 25:41Speaker 4: you know, one of the best starters in the game
- 25:43Speaker 4: if you can stay healthy.
- 25:43Speaker 6: And I think that's the big up. Right, When guys get.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Hurt a lot early in their career, I think it's
- 25:49Speaker 4: put some doubt in your head, Hey, can we rely
- 25:51Speaker 4: on this guy or if we're willing to spend the money,
- 25:54Speaker 4: do we just go out and get a starter. Maybe
- 25:56Speaker 4: they're willing to go out and spend the money get
- 25:57Speaker 4: a starter, right, and that's why they're willing enough to
- 25:59Speaker 4: give get rid of Grayson. So I think towards the end,
- 26:02Speaker 4: at the end of the off season, we'll have a
- 26:03Speaker 4: good idea. You know, Hey, maybe this was because they
- 26:06Speaker 4: were going to replace him with, you know, a free
- 26:08Speaker 4: agent starter or a high level starter. But if they don't,
- 26:12Speaker 4: then yeah, maybe you're scratching your head a little bit.
- 26:14Speaker 4: But I think the injury history it is tough. It's like, man,
- 26:17Speaker 4: we really like this guy, he's got great stuff, we
- 26:21Speaker 4: like the person, but you know, can we trust that
- 26:26Speaker 4: he's gonna stay healthy for the entire season when he
- 26:29Speaker 4: hasn't really been able to yet?
- 26:35Speaker 5: Yeah? For sure.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Hey, Zach, did you see the whole Alcs thing with
- 26:40Speaker 1: the Dan Wilson and you went through this Dan Wilson
- 26:43Speaker 1: and Munos not coming in and then giving up the
- 26:45Speaker 1: home run. You kind of went through that with the Orioles.
- 26:48Speaker 1: I hate to bring it up again, I'm sorry against
- 26:49Speaker 1: the same team with the Blue Jays where you didn't
- 26:51Speaker 1: pitch and Buck kind of got crushed for not pitching.
- 26:54Speaker 1: You do you do you understand that? Do you understand?
- 26:56Speaker 1: I mean it's a different game now, obviously analytics have
- 26:58Speaker 1: changed that. But do you kind of feel for Munos
- 27:01Speaker 1: the fact that he wasn't in that game and they
- 27:02Speaker 1: gave up the lead without him pitching in the game
- 27:05Speaker 1: they had to win.
- 27:07Speaker 4: Yeah, it's tough to watch you know my situation are
- 27:10Speaker 4: really you know, not pitching in that wild card game.
- 27:15Speaker 4: I think a lot of managers took notice. Actually I
- 27:19Speaker 4: went to the World Series that year to get the
- 27:25Speaker 4: Reliever of the Year award, and I talked to Frankkoner
- 27:28Speaker 4: for like a hot second.
- 27:28Speaker 6: He was like, why didn't you pitch right?
- 27:30Speaker 4: You know?
- 27:30Speaker 6: And it was one of those things.
- 27:32Speaker 4: And Andrew Miller was right there and after Frank Cone
- 27:34Speaker 4: left him like, man, you're gonna throw in every single
- 27:36Speaker 4: one of these games, aren't you?
- 27:37Speaker 6: Like after that? And and I think.
- 27:40Speaker 1: There's and he did, and he did, by the way.
- 27:43Speaker 6: And he did. There's some truth to it. There was
- 27:46Speaker 6: some truth to it.
- 27:47Speaker 4: And yeah, so I think now it's when you see it,
- 27:51Speaker 4: you're kind of like, hold on, didn't we learn our
- 27:52Speaker 4: lesson a little bit? Like you want to have your
- 27:54Speaker 4: guy out there? I understand that. Okay, Well, if you
- 27:58Speaker 4: pitch your best guy right, and let's say the game's
- 28:01Speaker 4: tied or whatever, and he's going two or three innings,
- 28:03Speaker 4: then then what right then what I think you can
- 28:06Speaker 4: live with the decision to throw your best guy and
- 28:09Speaker 4: then lose it or have somebody else have to come
- 28:12Speaker 4: in and then lose it that way because you've you
- 28:15Speaker 4: used your your best arm and your pen. So it
- 28:17Speaker 4: is tough to watch that go down, don't everyone's You know,
- 28:20Speaker 4: circumstances are different in my situation. You know, I'm not
- 28:24Speaker 4: really sure you Balda was throwing well up unt that point,
- 28:27Speaker 4: but he wasn't a reliever.
- 28:29Speaker 6: I was hot, I was ready to go.
- 28:30Speaker 4: You have multiple innings, and I just think it was
- 28:33Speaker 4: one of those things you get you learn from. So
- 28:34Speaker 4: but when you see it now, you're like, man, we
- 28:36Speaker 4: can't lose that way. Obviously not understanding you know they're
- 28:40Speaker 4: complete their bullpen dynamic or anything like that, but yeah,
- 28:44Speaker 4: you know you got to throw your best guys out
- 28:45Speaker 4: there in games like that.
- 28:48Speaker 5: I want to hear what you have. I want to
- 28:49Speaker 5: hear you elaborate on one of your tweets here talking
- 28:52Speaker 5: about this time of year. See this is your tweet,
- 28:56Speaker 5: so I'll read you your tweet. It's kind of like cannibalism,
- 28:59Speaker 5: but t winter seems to be this time of year again.
- 29:02Speaker 5: Hearing the chatter from team owners about payroll concerns, salary caps,
- 29:06Speaker 5: no or low revenue. CBA expires next December, so talks
- 29:11Speaker 5: like this will continue to pick up. That was you,
- 29:14Speaker 5: Zach Britton tweeting that out after I think how Steinbrunner
- 29:19Speaker 5: made his comments about how the Yankees are not necessarily profitable.
- 29:26Speaker 6: What are you talking about?
- 29:28Speaker 1: I was sitting at home.
- 29:29Speaker 5: I was bored.
- 29:30Speaker 6: What are you's talking about?
- 29:31Speaker 3: You the.
- 29:33Speaker 4: No, it's true because you know, as you know, I
- 29:36Speaker 4: was on the subcommittee for the Players Association. It seemed
- 29:40Speaker 4: about a year before we were really going to pick
- 29:43Speaker 4: up our conversations, you know, maybe slightly under a year
- 29:46Speaker 4: we were going to start picking up our conversations. There's
- 29:48Speaker 4: always this, you know, the narrative of and this is
- 29:52Speaker 4: kind of leading to you know, salary cap.
- 29:54Speaker 6: Right, so.
- 29:56Speaker 4: You know Howe's on their labor labor policy committee. I've
- 30:00Speaker 4: had these conversations you know with how you know in person,
- 30:04Speaker 4: you know, throughout my career with the Yankees.
- 30:07Speaker 6: You know this.
- 30:09Speaker 4: Sometimes it's just more about and the players do this too, right,
- 30:14Speaker 4: The fans just don't want to hear like that kind
- 30:16Speaker 4: of stuff. They don't want to hear about like players
- 30:18Speaker 4: wanting more money either, right, They're all like everyone's making
- 30:21Speaker 4: a ton of money, Like we don't want to.
- 30:22Speaker 6: Hear about this.
- 30:24Speaker 4: But the revenue or low revenues, or hey, we're not
- 30:28Speaker 4: as possible profitable as you think we are, or you know,
- 30:31Speaker 4: we have bills to pay. Kind of thing always kind
- 30:33Speaker 4: of leads to the negotiating table of hey, man, we like,
- 30:36Speaker 4: can you guys help us out here? We want the
- 30:37Speaker 4: salary cap or you know, it might not even be
- 30:40Speaker 4: that kind of tone now, like I'm not at the table.
- 30:41Speaker 4: It might be like, hey, either you give a salary
- 30:43Speaker 4: cap or we're going to lock you out. I don't know,
- 30:45Speaker 4: but it's been the same chatter for a really, really
- 30:48Speaker 4: long time. But I thought it was funny because this
- 30:52Speaker 4: is about the time about a year out where the
- 30:54Speaker 4: owners will start, you know, talking about that to the
- 30:57Speaker 4: media and things like that, and our counter I remember,
- 31:01Speaker 4: Max Sures are actually like at across the table one
- 31:04Speaker 4: time it's like, man, like show us your books and
- 31:06Speaker 4: like we'll work with you if you guys aren't making
- 31:07Speaker 4: any money, Like that's not good for any of us, right,
- 31:11Speaker 4: like so like can we see the books and then
- 31:13Speaker 4: like maybe we'll work with you there and then you know,
- 31:15Speaker 4: no books.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Well okay, so I love that you were on the
- 31:20Speaker 1: executive committee. Can we I don't know how to say
- 31:24Speaker 1: this properly. But can we can we stop? Can we
- 31:27Speaker 1: figure out a way actually not stop? Can we get
- 31:30Speaker 1: the Players Association to fight back a little bit in
- 31:32Speaker 1: the media? Is that just their thing? They just won't
- 31:34Speaker 1: fight back, right? So then people come up to me.
- 31:36Speaker 1: I'm sure they come up to you, people that know
- 31:38Speaker 1: You're like, oh, is there going to be a workstopage?
- 31:40Speaker 1: And why is this? And why? And you're just like,
- 31:43Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't know, And they're like, but
- 31:44Speaker 1: all I hear is that there has to be a
- 31:46Speaker 1: salary cap. Can we get and you were on the
- 31:49Speaker 1: executive commutey, can we get Andrew Miller, who you know
- 31:51Speaker 1: and I know very well and some of these guys
- 31:54Speaker 1: to come out and stand up for themselves because there's
- 31:57Speaker 1: issues in the problem is that the fans only hear
- 32:00Speaker 1: from Rob Manford and Rob Manford's people all the time,
- 32:03Speaker 1: and they never get to hear from the PA. How
- 32:05Speaker 1: do we how do we improve that and make the
- 32:08Speaker 1: PA come out and say, man, you know this happened
- 32:10Speaker 1: and we were gonna do this and we're gonna fight
- 32:12Speaker 1: this this way. Is there a way to do that?
- 32:16Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 32:16Speaker 4: I think we did a better job the last go around.
- 32:18Speaker 4: That was something that the eight of us on the subcommittee.
- 32:21Speaker 4: You know, it was actually really frustrating at times to
- 32:23Speaker 4: read stuff, you know, from the media and you knew
- 32:26Speaker 4: it was just coming from the owner's side, and they
- 32:29Speaker 4: didn't even take the time to ask the players. And
- 32:31Speaker 4: I guess some of that was on us too, right,
- 32:33Speaker 4: Like you got to be willing to engage the media.
- 32:36Speaker 4: So a lot of the time was like, well, these
- 32:38Speaker 4: guys are employed by MLB, so they're gonna spew that narrative,
- 32:42Speaker 4: and we're like, well, it doesn't have to be, Like
- 32:44Speaker 4: maybe we just build a relationship with these guys as well,
- 32:47Speaker 4: and we just we share our side, you know. And
- 32:51Speaker 4: I think getting out in front of some of that
- 32:53Speaker 4: stuff was was better this last time, and it changed
- 32:55Speaker 4: the narrative a little bit behind, you know, actually what
- 32:58Speaker 4: we were looking to do compared to you know, what
- 33:02Speaker 4: had been out there in the past. But yeah, I agree,
- 33:03Speaker 4: you know, being able to talk with the fans and
- 33:06Speaker 4: let them know what's actually going on from our perspective,
- 33:09Speaker 4: the player's perspective at the time when I was on
- 33:10Speaker 4: the committee was important is still is important for them.
- 33:13Speaker 6: To do that. I think you toe the line of
- 33:18Speaker 6: the fans don't.
- 33:18Speaker 4: Want to hear about, you know, millionaires arguing against billionaires.
- 33:23Speaker 4: But the truth is is, you know that the topics
- 33:25Speaker 4: are much more interesting than just that.
- 33:29Speaker 6: But yeah, I.
- 33:30Speaker 4: Agree, and I think it's something they've done a better
- 33:33Speaker 4: job the Union has of addressing or speaking to the
- 33:35Speaker 4: media and addressing you know, things out there that aren't true.
- 33:40Speaker 4: But we'll see how it goes this go around and
- 33:43Speaker 4: see if they've improved that anymore.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Hey, Zach, based on your combos in the past with
- 33:48Speaker 3: how do you sense that he's frustrated with the way
- 33:51Speaker 3: that revenue sharing works. It's not that they're giving money
- 33:55Speaker 3: to small market teams, and some of them clearly are
- 33:57Speaker 3: using it, others are not.
- 33:58Speaker 2: I think that's very clear. Year.
- 34:00Speaker 3: We always look to a team like the Pirates, where
- 34:02Speaker 3: there have been years where it's on record they made
- 34:05Speaker 3: you know, as much money on concessions and tickets to
- 34:08Speaker 3: play pay for player payroll, and that's before revenue sharing
- 34:10Speaker 3: and TV money. So you're talking like hundreds of millions
- 34:13Speaker 3: of dollars and you don't know where it's going besides
- 34:16Speaker 3: in a pocket. So do you feel like there's frustration there?
- 34:19Speaker 3: Because I think the real fight that doesn't get covered
- 34:21Speaker 3: often is the actual boardroom with all of the owners
- 34:25Speaker 3: being like, hey, guys, we're giving all this money and
- 34:27Speaker 3: you're not doing anything with it.
- 34:32Speaker 6: Yeah, we did.
- 34:33Speaker 4: We never had like a really in depth conversations about that.
- 34:37Speaker 4: I think he understands that it's part of doing business,
- 34:39Speaker 4: is the revenue sharing. So you know, my impression was
- 34:44Speaker 4: that wasn't really something that was you know, at the
- 34:47Speaker 4: forefront of his mind. I think that's the cost of
- 34:49Speaker 4: doing business there, you know, for the Yankees, understanding that
- 34:53Speaker 4: they're going to be, you know, at the top of
- 34:54Speaker 4: that list and they're going to have to cut a
- 34:56Speaker 4: check every single year. But how you know, the one
- 35:01Speaker 4: thing about how is uh, you know, I really appreciated
- 35:03Speaker 4: the communication with him. We did communicate a lot, you know,
- 35:06Speaker 4: considering when I came from the Ools, and you know,
- 35:08Speaker 4: I'd never really seen ownership. Uh, you know, I talked
- 35:12Speaker 4: to John and Lou Angelos, but I never really I
- 35:15Speaker 4: never saw Peter So being able to talk to how
- 35:18Speaker 4: especially when I was going.
- 35:19Speaker 6: Through Tommy John surgery.
- 35:21Speaker 4: I talked to him quite a bit, and he's very
- 35:24Speaker 4: like clear and open about how he thought or you know,
- 35:28Speaker 4: even how he ran the organization.
- 35:29Speaker 6: You know, he was very willing to anything you guys need, like,
- 35:32Speaker 6: I'll provide it.
- 35:33Speaker 4: So a lot of the fight, you know, isn't necessary
- 35:37Speaker 4: with a guy like how like he's he wants the
- 35:40Speaker 4: game to continue to operate and everyone to be profitable.
- 35:44Speaker 6: He wants the Yankees to do well. He wants to
- 35:46Speaker 6: invest back in the team.
- 35:47Speaker 4: So there's a lot of other owners that I think
- 35:52Speaker 4: kind of stand in the way of some progress happening,
- 35:54Speaker 4: and How it's not one of those guys.
- 35:57Speaker 1: All right, so off your comments, and my next question
- 35:59Speaker 1: leads this, are the Yankees going to go out and
- 36:01Speaker 1: spend this offseason? Because Hal keeps saying, Oh, I don't
- 36:04Speaker 1: want to go over the luxury tax and I want
- 36:06Speaker 1: this and I want that, and the Yankee fans complain, well,
- 36:08Speaker 1: you're not your dad, George. George would just went out
- 36:10Speaker 1: in ball we didn't make the World Series for all
- 36:12Speaker 1: these years. Is how gonna go out and spend or
- 36:15Speaker 1: is how waiting like a lot of the owners that
- 36:17Speaker 1: we keep hearing, oh, we're gonna wait and see what
- 36:18Speaker 1: happens with the lockout situation. Because I think when the
- 36:22Speaker 1: teams like the Yankees are good. It's good for the game.
- 36:25Speaker 1: The teams that most people like. When big market teams
- 36:29Speaker 1: are good, to me, it's good for the game. Like
- 36:31Speaker 1: even I'll throw Toronto in there when Toronto's good. You
- 36:33Speaker 1: saw the ratings this year. They were off the charts, right,
- 36:36Speaker 1: and everyone's like, oh, we love it when the Pirates
- 36:38Speaker 1: or the Marlins make the World Series. But at the
- 36:40Speaker 1: end of the day, people really tune in when it's
- 36:43Speaker 1: Dodgers versus Yankees and Red Sox Yankees and whoever else
- 36:46Speaker 1: you want to throw in there at the end. So
- 36:48Speaker 1: it was how gonna go out and say, man, I'm
- 36:50Speaker 1: sick of not winning. We have Cole coming back, we
- 36:52Speaker 1: have rode On, we have Free We're gonna resign Bellinger,
- 36:54Speaker 1: We're gonna bring in Tucker. We're really going for it.
- 36:57Speaker 6: Like my dad used to do.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Because I think that'd be awesome.
- 37:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I think, yeah, I think they will.
- 37:04Speaker 6: I think they'll go bring back some guys.
- 37:07Speaker 4: I mean, they consistently spend, right, you can argue, are
- 37:11Speaker 4: they spending on the right guys?
- 37:13Speaker 6: Right?
- 37:13Speaker 4: And I think if there's something I've you know, heard
- 37:17Speaker 4: and read from, you know, even Nek a steam Cone
- 37:21Speaker 4: it's you know, hey, even if we spend the most money,
- 37:24Speaker 4: doesn't guarantee us a World Series.
- 37:25Speaker 6: And you're like, well, absolutely, that's right.
- 37:28Speaker 4: Where the Dodters have just really done a good job
- 37:31Speaker 4: of paying the right people and they're paying a lot,
- 37:34Speaker 4: but they're paying the right guys.
- 37:36Speaker 6: So I think with with the Yankees, I fully expect
- 37:39Speaker 6: them to pay.
- 37:40Speaker 4: They're always involved in the big guys, and I think
- 37:43Speaker 4: they'll spend, uh and they'll add somebody big, maybe a
- 37:46Speaker 4: few this year, just just like they always do.
- 37:48Speaker 6: And I think you're right, absolutely need.
- 37:50Speaker 4: The Yankees back in the World Series, and you want
- 37:52Speaker 4: them to win a World Series title.
- 37:54Speaker 6: You you want the Blue Jays, and you need the Dodgers, you.
- 37:58Speaker 4: Know, in the World Series. You want the clubs with
- 38:01Speaker 4: those high payrolls and those big markets to be to win.
- 38:05Speaker 4: But yeah, to answer your question, I fully expect, you know, cash,
- 38:08Speaker 4: and and then how to approve it, you know, going
- 38:11Speaker 4: out and getting some big guys. I wouldn't, you know,
- 38:14Speaker 4: just from past experience, I don't. I would have a
- 38:17Speaker 4: hard time. It would be really frustrating too as a
- 38:21Speaker 4: former player to see the Yankees not spend because they're
- 38:24Speaker 4: worried about a lockout, and I can just think about, uh,
- 38:30Speaker 4: you know, like the COVID season, right, and all the things.
- 38:33Speaker 4: They lost revenue and you know, players lost some of
- 38:35Speaker 4: their salaries and things like that. Uh, And then going
- 38:38Speaker 4: into the next free agency, people are like, oh, we
- 38:40Speaker 4: lost money, so we don't want to spend the money.
- 38:41Speaker 4: You know, you heard some of that, you know, if
- 38:43Speaker 4: you were. I had an opt out in my contract
- 38:46Speaker 4: after that year, and that was some of the questions
- 38:48Speaker 4: that were getting raised. We're like, man, teams lost revenue,
- 38:51Speaker 4: are they gonna are they gonna spend on free agencies?
- 38:53Speaker 4: It's a really bad time for free agents. I would
- 38:56Speaker 4: have to go back and look up the numbers there
- 38:59Speaker 4: to just see if it had some impact. I'm sure
- 39:01Speaker 4: it did, but it'd be really frustrating for that to
- 39:05Speaker 4: be the narrative and a team like the Yankees not
- 39:07Speaker 4: spend because they're worried about a lockout because ultimately, like,
- 39:12Speaker 4: you're not gonna pay the guys anyway, right, You're gonna
- 39:14Speaker 4: renegotiate the effect of Hey, man, we locked you guys out,
- 39:20Speaker 4: or we didn't play X number of games, so I'm
- 39:23Speaker 4: gonna pro rate your salary even further. I mean, that's
- 39:25Speaker 4: going to be their angle. So I don't think these
- 39:28Speaker 4: deals should have any impact. They should be going out
- 39:31Speaker 4: and trying to get their team better and then actually
- 39:33Speaker 4: hoping that they don't have to deal with a lockout
- 39:35Speaker 4: and they can actually you know, work with the PA
- 39:39Speaker 4: and get something done before you know, a lockout even
- 39:42Speaker 4: takes place. But that hasn't been the history lately.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Exactly if half a season is miss which would suck
- 39:48Speaker 3: anduld be really stupid, then it would only be half
- 39:51Speaker 3: a year's salary and still play out the rest of
- 39:53Speaker 3: the season. So I'm with you, Yeah, I don't think
- 39:55Speaker 3: it's going to affect what they do this offseason.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Really good stuff, Zach.
- 39:59Speaker 3: I mean, I think condition of the adphones and the mic,
- 40:01Speaker 3: like he's he's in the media is.
- 40:05Speaker 1: Just really helped him. That mic has really helped him.
- 40:08Speaker 6: This is uh, this is.
- 40:09Speaker 4: Like what I happened when you're really bored and you're like, man,
- 40:11Speaker 4: I should buy some of this audio equipment and figure
- 40:13Speaker 4: out how it works.
- 40:15Speaker 6: You know. That's kind of where I'm at right now.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Wait, you got but do you consider yourself an Oriole
- 40:21Speaker 1: or do you consider yourself a Yankee?
- 40:24Speaker 6: Well, I guess it depends on who you're talking to.
- 40:26Speaker 1: But I'm talking to you, I'm asking you.
- 40:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I will say I look at it like two
- 40:32Speaker 4: different careers, almost right, which kind of is. But you know,
- 40:35Speaker 4: I feel like my career will be known for the
- 40:37Speaker 4: stuff I did with Baltimore and you know, with my
- 40:41Speaker 4: brother coaching there too, being drafted there, you know, for
- 40:46Speaker 4: me spending a lot more.
- 40:47Speaker 6: Of my career with with grows.
- 40:49Speaker 4: I think for me, I consider Baltimore you know, home.
- 40:53Speaker 4: But at the same token, I really did, you know,
- 40:57Speaker 4: appreciate my time and I liked my time with the
- 40:59Speaker 4: Yankees organized uh. And if I still communicate with, you know,
- 41:02Speaker 4: players and stuff, it's it's the Yankee guys because those
- 41:05Speaker 4: are my last teammates.
- 41:07Speaker 6: They treated me great.
- 41:08Speaker 4: A lot of people in the front office still maintain
- 41:10Speaker 4: relationships with them and things like that. So and the
- 41:13Speaker 4: Orioles front office is new.
- 41:15Speaker 6: You know, I've met Michael Lias.
- 41:16Speaker 4: They're great people too, But for playing it would be
- 41:20Speaker 4: the Oriols. Like I think my career I'll be known
- 41:22Speaker 4: for the oriel stuff. Personally for me, that's how I
- 41:27Speaker 4: view it. But at the same time, you know, if
- 41:30Speaker 4: I can use the Yankee stuff. I will use the
- 41:31Speaker 4: Yankee stuff too.
- 41:32Speaker 6: You know, more people know.
- 41:33Speaker 4: I actually feel like a lot more people recognize me
- 41:36Speaker 4: for like the Yankee stuff, or like playing with the Yankees.
- 41:39Speaker 4: Not the performance, but you know, oh the you know
- 41:42Speaker 4: you were the Yankee pitcher, right, and you're like, oh yeah, sure, yeah,
- 41:46Speaker 4: that's that game.
- 41:48Speaker 1: Because you didn't pitch in that one game. He didn't
- 41:50Speaker 1: pitch in the one game. So you can blame buck
- 41:52Speaker 1: right for not pitching you in that one game in Toronto.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Because if you guys win that series, maybe people are like, man,
- 41:58Speaker 1: that us an Oriole for life. He's like, he's like
- 42:00Speaker 1: Brooks Robinson.
- 42:02Speaker 4: I know, you imagine if I blew that game. Though,
- 42:04Speaker 4: I also thought, like what if.
- 42:05Speaker 8: I went in there and like the first pitch gets
- 42:08Speaker 8: absolutely whacked, you know, like out of the stadium, and
- 42:12Speaker 8: then I happen not that, No, I probably wouldn't have.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Nobody could touch you. Nobody was like the guy.
- 42:21Speaker 4: And then like four wild pitches to the backstop that
- 42:23Speaker 4: was probably more probable than a homer. So yeah, no,
- 42:29Speaker 4: it would have been interesting had I throw. Maybe maybe
- 42:31Speaker 4: I'll the hop on a podcast and like dive into
- 42:33Speaker 4: the wild card game.
- 42:34Speaker 6: One day. I don't really know, Maybe.
- 42:36Speaker 1: I just know I got one hit off you in
- 42:38Speaker 1: my life and it was like one of the greatest
- 42:39Speaker 1: hits in my life.
- 42:40Speaker 4: I actually ran into Taylor t Garden and we had
- 42:44Speaker 4: a conversation about you. One of my starts looking up
- 42:46Speaker 4: probably the best one I ever had against the White
- 42:49Speaker 4: Sox and Camden Yards.
- 42:50Speaker 6: And did I play that game? I think you did.
- 42:53Speaker 4: It was a day game and I think we were wondering.
- 42:55Speaker 6: Like why is he playing in a day game?
- 42:57Speaker 1: And I think that was the hit I got. It
- 42:59Speaker 1: was a chopper. There was a chopper off the plate.
- 43:01Speaker 1: It was an infield single with my speed crafts.
- 43:07Speaker 4: I've never seen Aj so mad that he was playing
- 43:09Speaker 4: this day game before.
- 43:12Speaker 6: He's like it game up to.
- 43:13Speaker 4: The plate the entire time, and he was like, God, like,
- 43:16Speaker 4: why am I heading first up?
- 43:17Speaker 1: There's like a lefty on the mound.
- 43:18Speaker 6: It's a day game. Yeah, Like why am I playing?
- 43:22Speaker 1: I can see true? And then and then I was like,
- 43:24Speaker 1: and look at that guy turned into Look how good
- 43:26Speaker 1: that guy became cratzy. You know, the feeling is a backup.
- 43:29Speaker 1: I'm like, why is why is aer Krats not playing
- 43:31Speaker 1: against his nasty lefty throwing sinkers on my knuckles.
- 43:34Speaker 5: Because he wasn't that guy. You you looked at his stuff,
- 43:37Speaker 5: You looked at Brett's stuff at that point, and you
- 43:39Speaker 5: were like you raced the batrack. You were like, I
- 43:42Speaker 5: am definitely in this game, dude.
- 43:44Speaker 1: The only guy I ever saw, I know we got
- 43:46Speaker 1: to go. But the only thing I ever the only
- 43:47Speaker 1: guy I ever saw I could hit Zach Britton as
- 43:49Speaker 1: a lefty was David Ortiz and then I and then
- 43:53Speaker 1: and do you know why he could hit you because
- 43:54Speaker 1: he said he moved all the way to the front
- 43:56Speaker 1: of the plate before your stuff broke, and so he's like,
- 43:59Speaker 1: I'm just gonna hit that nine nine before it dives
- 44:01Speaker 1: in on my hands and he could break O. Dude,
- 44:05Speaker 1: he raked him. Look at the numbers. He actually raked him.
- 44:08Speaker 1: And I'm like, he told me that. I'm like, that's
- 44:11Speaker 1: not going to work for me, Dude, Like I can't
- 44:13Speaker 1: do that.
- 44:15Speaker 6: I love it.
- 44:16Speaker 4: He's yeah, he's he's a good time Matt Olson.
- 44:17Speaker 6: Actually quite he owns me right now. Man. I could
- 44:21Speaker 6: not get that guy.
- 44:22Speaker 1: I think.
- 44:22Speaker 6: God.
- 44:22Speaker 4: I didn't face him very much either, but he had
- 44:26Speaker 4: a home run off me in Oakland. If you ever
- 44:27Speaker 4: want to check this video out and look at mine,
- 44:29Speaker 4: and I think Caleb Joseph's reaction to this home run
- 44:32Speaker 4: that he hit it was pretty to this day.
- 44:35Speaker 6: I'm still, you know, flustered every time I see him
- 44:37Speaker 6: play on how he did it.
- 44:38Speaker 4: But hey, Cratcy broke my hand in Yankee spring training,
- 44:41Speaker 4: so don't let him fail you.
- 44:45Speaker 6: You did so it's whatever. We can talk about that
- 44:48Speaker 6: another time too.
- 44:49Speaker 3: It's not the only hand he's broken. Oh didn't you
- 44:53Speaker 3: break someone's finger holding someone back? Crats Yeah, Matt Alberts, Yeah,
- 44:59Speaker 3: there's a b there.
- 45:00Speaker 6: One of the best.
- 45:00Speaker 1: Nicknames in baseball, by the way, which was yeah, which
- 45:05Speaker 1: was I'm not gonna say it. I don't know if
