- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey friends, Good Morning, Second hour show five thousand, two
- 0:05Speaker 1: hundred and thirty five of The Morning Show with Preston Scottbot.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Who's County right, Jose over there in Studio one A.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I am here in Studio one B, and it is Monday,
- 0:15Speaker 1: September the sixteenth. If you're an FSU fan, it's okay
- 0:18Speaker 1: to wear black. I get it. I understand. We'll we'll
- 0:22Speaker 1: try to help with that next hour because Misery does
- 0:25Speaker 1: a love company, and so Iris Chaffelle will join us
- 0:27Speaker 1: next hour. Doctor Joe Cams later on this hour, but
- 0:31Speaker 1: we will talk this half hour about team challenge, and
- 0:35Speaker 1: we'll get to the specifics of why we're going to
- 0:37Speaker 1: have that conversation a little later. But joining me in
- 0:40Speaker 1: studio is Danny Francis. Danny is here with me. He
- 0:44Speaker 1: works with ADDIE's Land and Tree Service. For those of
- 0:46Speaker 1: you that may or may not know, they're a client
- 0:49Speaker 1: of mine, I've worked with John Boseman. They personally have
- 0:52Speaker 1: done work for me at my home multiple times over
- 0:55Speaker 1: the years. And I love John. I love the work
- 0:59Speaker 1: that he does, love how he does it, I love
- 1:01Speaker 1: the type of person he is and and he works
- 1:03Speaker 1: with John and we found out just I didn't know
- 1:08Speaker 1: until just recently that you worked with John, but you
- 1:12Speaker 1: and I go to the same church.
- 1:13Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:14Speaker 1: How you doing today?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Good good? I appreciate you having me on.
- 1:17Speaker 1: No, it's my pleasure. We were just talking in the
- 1:19Speaker 1: break teen Challenge. A lot of people don't know about it.
- 1:23Speaker 1: But let's before we kind of get to teen challenge,
- 1:26Speaker 1: the purpose that it serves and its role in your life,
- 1:30Speaker 1: a little snapshot just kind of where you're from and
- 1:34Speaker 1: how you ended up in Tallahassee, Florida.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Okay, So I'm from Saint Petersburg, Florida.
- 1:38Speaker 3: I grew up there my whole life, but I went
- 1:41Speaker 3: to Florida State, so I also have family in Tallahassee.
- 1:44Speaker 3: So Tallahassee's been a place I've been coming up to
- 1:47Speaker 3: since I was a young kid.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Is that what drew you to Tallahassee to go to
- 1:50Speaker 1: Florida State? That you had some family up here or
- 1:53Speaker 1: was there some other was what drew you here?
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yes?
- 1:55Speaker 3: So my parents went to Florida State as well, So
- 1:58Speaker 3: I've been a Florida State fan watching football game doctrin.
- 2:02Speaker 3: That's right, that's right. Yeah, So that's kind of part
- 2:06Speaker 3: of it. And I had some family up here. Plus
- 2:08Speaker 3: I just thought it was a great opportunity. So that's
- 2:12Speaker 3: what brought me up here for college.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Tell me a little bit about kind of the the
- 2:16Speaker 1: nuts and bolts of growing up, being in school and
- 2:20Speaker 1: just sort of where your path began.
- 2:23Speaker 2: To deviate just a little bit.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Okay, So I went to Catholic school kindergarten through eighth grade,
- 2:29Speaker 3: and like we already kind of talked about, I knew.
- 2:32Speaker 2: God and.
- 2:35Speaker 3: I had a lot of the knowledge that you get
- 2:37Speaker 3: in Catholic school, but I never really grasped the understanding
- 2:41Speaker 3: of the relationship Jesus wants us to have with them.
- 2:44Speaker 3: So in high school, I went to public school and
- 2:48Speaker 3: I slowly kind of started to deviate away from him.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Can you look back and kind of pinpoint what that
- 2:55Speaker 1: was that maybe just started to pull you. Was it
- 2:58Speaker 1: kind of the peer groups in the frames or what
- 3:00Speaker 1: was it? Partly that and uh, partly I just I
- 3:04Speaker 1: never really got it. I Uh, I thought the Christian
- 3:08Speaker 1: life was about, you know, living this life where you
- 3:12Speaker 1: have to follow all these rules, and I never really
- 3:15Speaker 1: understood the love, the grace and the mercy God has
- 3:18Speaker 1: for us and how much we need that in our lives.
- 3:21Speaker 1: So I kind of deviated away from him in high school,
- 3:27Speaker 1: and at that time I started to start to look
- 3:30Speaker 1: for happiness and gratify, gratification and some of the some
- 3:33Speaker 1: of the wrong areas of life. And it takes, you know,
- 3:38Speaker 1: going through those experiences and not being gratified right time
- 3:43Speaker 1: after time. You know. I've had conversations like this over
- 3:46Speaker 1: the years, because I was a vacational pastor for about
- 3:48Speaker 1: twenty years and with a lot of those years spent
- 3:51Speaker 1: with young people high school, college age. And one of
- 3:55Speaker 1: the things that I remember in a lot of conversations
- 3:58Speaker 1: with people that struggled with different kinds of addictions, whether
- 4:01Speaker 1: it's substance or something online. At the time, it wasn't online,
- 4:05Speaker 1: it was in magazines or in movies. That kind of
- 4:07Speaker 1: thing is you always start out feeling like you've got
- 4:11Speaker 1: control of it.
- 4:12Speaker 2: That's right.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Is that is that sort of where it starts for you? You
- 4:15Speaker 1: you've got this.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Yes, And I wouldn't say that like I was a
- 4:21Speaker 3: person that just failed immediately right away. Yeah, And I
- 4:25Speaker 3: kind of feel like, you know, I was, I was
- 4:27Speaker 3: good at things, I was good at sports, and I
- 4:30Speaker 3: relied on myself for all that, and it took a lot,
- 4:34Speaker 3: a lot of times of of messing stuff up over
- 4:37Speaker 3: over my high school and college years and then furthermore
- 4:42Speaker 3: even even more and when I started to experiment, experiment
- 4:45Speaker 3: with all the wrong things, sure to learn that I
- 4:49Speaker 3: needed something more.
- 4:50Speaker 1: We're gonna talk more with Danny about that. That that
- 4:53Speaker 1: road that you travel, it's kind of funny. I've described
- 4:55Speaker 1: it to people as a crack in the windshield that
- 4:57Speaker 1: you get this little tiny little chip or c and
- 5:00Speaker 1: you think, ah, it's no big deal. I got this,
- 5:03Speaker 1: and then just life the running through the road, it
- 5:06Speaker 1: just becomes a bigger crack, and a bigger crack, and
- 5:09Speaker 1: then it's spider veins out. Next thing you know, you
- 5:11Speaker 1: winshield caves in. And you thought you had it under
- 5:13Speaker 1: control from the very beginning, but it's not the way
- 5:16Speaker 1: it works. More to come here on the Morning Show
- 5:18Speaker 1: with Preston Scott, Danny Francis with me in studio. He
- 5:33Speaker 1: works with ADDIE's Tree Service. But more importantly, we're talking
- 5:36Speaker 1: about his story, and that's the thing. Everybody's story. It's
- 5:41Speaker 1: kind of it's and you've been around this now enough
- 5:45Speaker 1: and we were just talking about you just you're sharing
- 5:47Speaker 1: your testimony with different groups of people in different parts
- 5:50Speaker 1: of the world, even and it's interesting. Everyone has a
- 5:53Speaker 1: unique story, but there are some real finite commonalities between
- 5:58Speaker 1: those stories.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Yes, for you, You're you're in high school, You're starting
- 6:04Speaker 1: to make questionable choices, and then you end up at
- 6:08Speaker 1: Florida State University. Tell us about what happened there.
- 6:12Speaker 3: So when I got here to Florida State and Telassie,
- 6:17Speaker 3: it started off as a great opportunity.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I joined a fraternity.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Was that a good or bad decision? Looking back?
- 6:26Speaker 3: It could have been a good decision, Okay, But it
- 6:28Speaker 3: turned out to maybe not be a good decision for me. Okay,
- 6:32Speaker 3: it just exposed me to more more time to kind
- 6:36Speaker 3: of party. You can use it as a great opportunity
- 6:39Speaker 3: for networking and getting to know people, but it just
- 6:43Speaker 3: allowed me to party a little more. Okay at the time,
- 6:46Speaker 3: I guess I didn't need that all right, So I started,
- 6:51Speaker 3: you know, drinking and partying a lot in college and
- 6:56Speaker 3: I ended up not graduating. I left Florida State after
- 6:58Speaker 3: three years. What was your major business administration?
- 7:01Speaker 1: Okay, So were your parents aware of the struggles you
- 7:05Speaker 1: were having or I mean kind of give me a
- 7:07Speaker 1: snapshot of what was going on with common dad.
- 7:11Speaker 3: They were aware. I don't think it was. I mean,
- 7:16Speaker 3: in college, the the partying's kind of normal. I think
- 7:20Speaker 3: I kind of hit a little bit the extremity of
- 7:24Speaker 3: it at times. But it wasn't always like that, you know.
- 7:26Speaker 3: It kind of went back and forth, like I were you.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Putting Were you putting on a front for mom and Dad?
- 7:31Speaker 2: Sometimes?
- 7:32Speaker 1: Yes, Okay, definitely, because that's part of the deal here,
- 7:35Speaker 1: isn't it.
- 7:35Speaker 2: That's right, That's right.
- 7:37Speaker 3: And as I got older and I moved back home
- 7:41Speaker 3: to Saint Pete, and I.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Mean I held jobs for a long time.
- 7:45Speaker 3: It wasn't It took me many years before it got
- 7:47Speaker 3: out of control.
- 7:48Speaker 2: But like you.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Said, putting on that front to my parents, it turned into,
- 7:53Speaker 3: you know, ten years down the road where I didn't
- 7:55Speaker 3: have a great relationship with them because a lot of
- 7:58Speaker 3: times I didn't want to be around them because then
- 8:01Speaker 3: you know, you're you're having to hide things. Once it
- 8:04Speaker 3: got into the drugs, then that so there was two
- 8:06Speaker 3: versions of you pretty much, yes, kind of the the
- 8:10Speaker 3: Danny and the Daniel or the Dan and the Dan Danny,
- 8:13Speaker 3: you know what I mean? Yeah, Yes, Okay, So when
- 8:18Speaker 3: I was in my early thirties, I got into a
- 8:22Speaker 3: car accident and I was prescribed pain pills and that's
- 8:26Speaker 3: kind of where things really took a bad path, and
- 8:30Speaker 3: that's what eventually brought me to teen.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Challenge was trying to get get help with that.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Was it oxy codone?
- 8:38Speaker 2: What was it? It was?
- 8:40Speaker 3: Yes, it was oxy codone from a doctor, and then
- 8:45Speaker 3: not from a doctor, you know, then.
- 8:47Speaker 1: You find your sources.
- 8:48Speaker 2: That's right, And uh, I just I just went down
- 8:51Speaker 2: a bad path.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Did you have this feeling as you when was there
- 8:57Speaker 1: an awareness that you were addicted to these pain pills.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Within months? Really? Yeah?
- 9:04Speaker 3: So it's a great feeling to be honest with you
- 9:07Speaker 3: at first, but then when you don't have them and
- 9:10Speaker 3: you need them, I mean, talk about misery. That's one
- 9:13Speaker 3: of the most painful. You know, needing something that you
- 9:18Speaker 3: either don't have or and then all of a sudden
- 9:20Speaker 3: you're relying on it. It's weird and you're chasing it. Yes,
- 9:25Speaker 3: of course, because that's what you need to but you
- 9:28Speaker 3: need to feel better, right at least that's what you
- 9:30Speaker 3: tell yourself.
- 9:31Speaker 2: That's right.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Yeah, he's got a little bit of a smile on
- 9:34Speaker 1: his face because he's looking back. I can see it
- 9:36Speaker 1: on his face. But we're going to talk about that
- 9:39Speaker 1: turning point, because the turning point is a really good one.
- 9:43Speaker 1: And we're going to tell you about the role that
- 9:45Speaker 1: a group called Team Challenge played in all of this,
- 9:48Speaker 1: and then we're going to talk about how you can
- 9:50Speaker 1: play a role in that group Team Challenge fun, how
- 9:53Speaker 1: that works, isn't it sixteen passed the hour Danny Francis
- 9:56Speaker 1: with me in studio here in the Morning Show with
- 9:58Speaker 1: Preston Scott. All right, we're back Danny Francis with me
- 10:12Speaker 1: from ADDIE's Land in Tree Service. But we're really talking
- 10:15Speaker 1: about his life, journey and his testimony. That's a very
- 10:19Speaker 1: direct way of putting it. And you know, those of
- 10:23Speaker 1: you that know anything about God know, you know you
- 10:26Speaker 1: overcome in life by the blood of Jesus and the
- 10:28Speaker 1: word of our testimony. And that's the good and the bad.
- 10:31Speaker 1: You know, we sometimes think that the bad stuff is oh,
- 10:35Speaker 1: don't talk about no, no, no, no. That stuff is
- 10:38Speaker 1: important because it shows the power of God in your life.
- 10:42Speaker 1: You're still here, no matter what you've gone through, You're
- 10:44Speaker 1: still here, and no matter what you're going through, you're
- 10:47Speaker 1: still here. You've got a chance to change that with
- 10:50Speaker 1: the help of God and Danny. What was the point
- 10:53Speaker 1: for you that you realized you needed to do something?
- 10:57Speaker 3: So I believe God had to step been in my life.
- 11:02Speaker 3: I went to teen Challenge for six months in twenty sixteen.
- 11:06Speaker 2: It was kind of a.
- 11:09Speaker 3: I was in a bad spot and my parents went
- 11:12Speaker 3: I kind of did it to appease them.
- 11:15Speaker 2: I didn't finish the program. I did about six months.
- 11:18Speaker 3: And I went back home and I had a job
- 11:22Speaker 3: waiting for me, and I did really well for about
- 11:25Speaker 3: a year or two. But that time I spent in
- 11:28Speaker 3: teen Challenge the first time I didn't actually get why
- 11:33Speaker 3: I was there. So in twenty twenty one, I got
- 11:37Speaker 3: arrested and teen Challenge was my option.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Was it part of a diversion program? Basically pretty much.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Yes.
- 11:46Speaker 3: It was a way to not have to spend a
- 11:48Speaker 3: bunch of time in prison. I did do some time
- 11:51Speaker 3: in jail, and I believe God allowed me to lose
- 11:55Speaker 3: my freedom so I could have some time away from
- 11:58Speaker 3: what I was doing out in the world.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Oh, the irony of ironies. Lose your freedom to gain
- 12:02Speaker 1: your freedom.
- 12:02Speaker 2: That's right, that's right.
- 12:04Speaker 3: So in in jail, I Uh, I started reading my
- 12:08Speaker 3: Bible again. I was really, uh seeking something.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Better for my life. I was unhealthy.
- 12:15Speaker 3: I started working out again in there, and uh, it
- 12:18Speaker 3: actually didn't look like they were going to allow me
- 12:20Speaker 3: to get teen Challenge two to kind of avoid my
- 12:25Speaker 3: all the time I was gonna have to do. But
- 12:28Speaker 3: with five months into jail, I was ready to take
- 12:32Speaker 3: like a two or three year sentence, and my lawyer
- 12:35Speaker 3: came to me and said that, you know, out of nowhere,
- 12:38Speaker 3: they're gonna they're going to allow you to do a
- 12:41Speaker 3: year and teen challenge. I mean, I had a first
- 12:44Speaker 3: and second degree felony. They were gonna have hold.
- 12:47Speaker 1: With withhold of adjudication on my charges.
- 12:50Speaker 3: I wouldn't be a felon if I did everything. And
- 12:53Speaker 3: actually I just got off probation three months ago.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Congratulations, yes sir.
- 12:58Speaker 3: But again the teen challenge, Uh, it was tough at first.
- 13:03Speaker 3: I mean it's so you you.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Don't have a because you've been there before. No, just
- 13:11Speaker 1: having to go there and admit you've got this issue.
- 13:13Speaker 2: That's right. Noen, I got a year.
- 13:17Speaker 3: You know, you you don't have a lot of freedom,
- 13:20Speaker 3: but you actually are learning how to use your Freedom
- 13:23Speaker 3: teen Challenge will give you some of those tools that
- 13:27Speaker 3: will allow you to live your life in a more
- 13:30Speaker 3: in an actually free way once you once you're out
- 13:33Speaker 3: in no way, if you complete a year, are you good.
- 13:37Speaker 2: But it gives you those tools.
- 13:39Speaker 3: So the work, the school work where you're you're learning
- 13:44Speaker 3: more about God and Jesus and the and and why
- 13:49Speaker 3: he has this wants us to have this relationship with him.
- 13:53Speaker 3: It's for us, you know, it's uh, it's to set
- 13:56Speaker 3: us free. It's to show that he loves us and
- 13:58Speaker 3: he has grace for us. And and you know, for me,
- 14:01Speaker 3: even though I messed up that I still have an
- 14:03Speaker 3: opportunity in life. And took me a month or two
- 14:06Speaker 3: to really get settled in there because it's just it's
- 14:10Speaker 3: different than being out. But once I did, I really
- 14:14Speaker 3: took advantage of my time in there.
- 14:16Speaker 2: I ended up.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Actually doing an internship for seven months so I could
- 14:22Speaker 3: help guys coming in behind me get the same experience
- 14:25Speaker 3: I had.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Folks, here's what we're gonna do. There's a golf tournament
- 14:29Speaker 1: coming up the end of the month. It is the
- 14:32Speaker 1: twenty seventh Eddie's Land and Tree Service has done an
- 14:37Speaker 1: event for the last three years and the event benefits
- 14:41Speaker 1: the Tallahassee Team Challenge. I'm gonna put all the information
- 14:45Speaker 1: on our TwixT page, sorry, Twitter and next that's just
- 14:50Speaker 1: my stupid way Twix. And we're gonna put it out
- 14:52Speaker 1: on my blog page as well, because honestly, the sign
- 14:55Speaker 1: up is it's more just kind of showing up and
- 14:57Speaker 1: registering and and being part of the event where the
- 15:01Speaker 1: proceeds go to the Tallasse Team Challenge to help get
- 15:04Speaker 1: them a new HVAC system, which is really needed. I've
- 15:08Speaker 1: been involved with Team Challenge over the years. I was
- 15:11Speaker 1: telling Danny before I go back with Team Challenge to
- 15:14Speaker 1: nineteen eighty three or eighty four in Phoenix, and by
- 15:17Speaker 1: being involved with just having a heart for what they
- 15:20Speaker 1: do and how they do it. And I guess the
- 15:22Speaker 1: final thing I want to share is if you're struggling
- 15:24Speaker 1: out there, there's a Team Challenge somewhere in your area.
- 15:29Speaker 1: I don't care where you're listening to the show on
- 15:31Speaker 1: iHeartRadio across the country, there's a Team Challenge nearby. And Danny,
- 15:36Speaker 1: thank you for coming in and telling everybody your story
- 15:39Speaker 1: does a pleasure. It's made a difference in your life.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I can see it in your face, but you'd recommend
- 15:44Speaker 1: I would. Thanks for having me, Yeah, thank you.
