- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Welcome inside this episode of This Week in Hockey East.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: I'm Bridget Prue here with Eric Galanti, and we're ready to take you through all of our quarterfinal matchups on the men's side as well as BDU, the women heading to the national tournament, will preview their game as well.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: But we want to start with our Friday night game, our Friday night hockey east on Nessen.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: That is UConn hosting Providence College.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Eric, take us through what we need to know about UConn coming into the postseason.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's kind of amazing because we've talked a lot about how well UConn's played this half of the year, right?
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Ever since January 1st.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: But the crazy thing is they've actually maybe even been better here down the stretch.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: And I think notably better since they sort of, I know the official 100% in the NCAA tournament just recently happened.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: But once they got that win over Anchorage, and maybe even before that, the comeback against Lowell, which snapped a couple of game losing streak.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, that was in early February.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: Hudson Shandor scoring two goals, including the game winner.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: It's felt like almost maybe this weight has been lifted.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: This NCAA tournament conversation, they haven't had to have their in, right, at this point.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: So they're now unbeaten in their last seven games.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: They're 6-0 and one in their last seven.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: I it's hard to describe how good the power play has been.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: They have scored a power play goal in 10 consecutive games and 16 of 17.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: It's crazy.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: They're at 40% on their power play over their last 10 games.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: So the the confidence piece, and I think, you know, we'll have this conversation with UMass, we'll have this conversation with UConn.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: I think those two are kind of over here, and then everyone else.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: Not that BC and Maine and BU aren't playing well and so on and so forth, but those two were the teams that were outside the NCAA tournament picture and have now played their way inside, right?
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: UConn doing it over maybe a longer period of time.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: But even UMass, when we had the conversation, they were outside kind of in January.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: They're inside right now.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: So for UConn, there's a confidence in their scoring that they don't just have to rely on that top line.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: As good as Muldowney's been, and he's been incredible, plus 25 in points from last year, as good as Shandor's been, and he's been awesome, plus 18 in points from last year, as good as Tattle and Richard have been, they feel like they have a full group, not just on the power play, but their full spectrum of offensive scores.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: They really like what their freshman lines brought.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: They really like what the Sitar lines brought.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: So all of that combined together, there's so much confidence that it doesn't have to be one line reliant right now.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: And I think that's really important for UConn as they embark on this tournament.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: This is not a play-in game, right?
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: Both of these teams are in the NCAA tournament no matter what happens.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: So they can play free, they can play at home.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: And I'm really interested to see how they come out in this game after just a really, really impressive second half to lock up their first ever NCAA tournament appearance.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Eric, they're both pairwise teams that are high enough to make it into the NCAA tournament as at-large bids.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: That's what makes this four or five matchup so interesting on the Hockey East tournament.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: So uh looking at their previous meetings this season, they split.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Each team has a win.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: It was Yukon taking a shootout win, an eight-round shootout at Providence, the first meeting back in December.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: And then the next day, it was another uh game at Yukon, where it's a 6-3 win for Providence.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: So they got a little bit of revenge after that game.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: When you look at where PC is right now, they only have six regulation losses this year, and they've been a really good road team under Nate Lehman this season, nine, four, and two on the road.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Three of those losses came to BC or BU.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Those are good teams.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Those are teams that are hard to beat on their home ice.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: So it looked like they bounced back in the final weekend.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: They had maybe, or more than likely, their worst game of the season against Boston University, the second to last game of the season.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: They come back, they win the Saturday game against Northeastern to get back on a positive note heading into the postseason.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: So they'll head up to Yukon.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: And some players that we'll keep an eye on are some of the freshmen for this PC team.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: And Logan Sawyer in particular stood out against Northeastern.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: He scored a power play goal, and those have been hard to come by for Providence this year.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: So he had a goal, an assist, and eight shots against the Huskies in the final game of the regular season.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't think there's any doubt.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: And it's, you know, worth noting his performance in that last game.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: You know, he had what, eight shots on goal?
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Um, and really is just someone who I think has the potential to be a driver.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Um, so he could be a real key in this matchup.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: I think it's just interesting.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Remember last year for Providence, they played in the same game, four or five game.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: They were the home team, and it was basically a play-in game with UMass.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: And that creates a whole different angle to it.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: As we've said, this is not a play-in game this year.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: Nate Lehman actually said he likes the fact they're on the road, right?
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: And they have an opportunity to kind of just play free.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: And um, so we'll see what will happen.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: Should be a really, really good game.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, and this will punch the first ticket to TD Garden with a bunch more to come.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Uh, this will be a Friday night game coming up right after we're done, right here on Nesson.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Three other quarterfinal games to talk about, plus the BU Women Hockey East Champions, and they open the NCAA tournament on Thursday.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: We'll talk all about that as we go through right here on This Week in Hockey East.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Welcome back to This Week in Hockey East.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: Let's keep rolling through some quarterfinal games.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: The 3-6 matchup will take place at 4.30 over on Nesson Plus.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: It'll be UMass, who we mentioned a little bit in our first segment, playing as well as just about anyone in the country right now.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: They get a two-to-one win over Vermont in the opening round.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: They will take on Boston University.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: First time these two teams get together since December.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: It was a bit of an odd game Wednesday.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Uh, there were three goals scored in the game.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: They all came in a span of two minutes and 23 seconds in the first period.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: And after that, there weren't that many grade A chances.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: But I give a lot of credit to you, Mass, for that because I thought they did a really good job of keeping Vermont to the outside, right?
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: And yeah, there were some shots from out there, but there really weren't much.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: And everything that Michael Harable had to deal with was, you know, low grade, whether it was the outside or the high slot, and he did a pretty good job with that.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Owen Murray, I thought had a really good game.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: Lyndon Alger, I thought had a really good game.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Some of those UMass defensemen, especially because UMass was down Lucas Olvest on Wednesday, kind of lifting sticks in the right moment, taking away passing lanes in the right moment.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: And I bring all that up because we've talked so much about UMass's offense recently, and deservedly so.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: But this was actually the first time all year that UMass won when only scoring two goals in a game, two goals or less.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: That was such a hallmark of what they did last year.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: And I think it kind of speaks to the offense because they haven't had to have that many games where they were in that.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: But when scoring two goals or less, UMass started the season 0-11.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: They are now, over the last three weeks, 1-0-2 when scoring two goals.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: So as we get to the playoffs, as games get a little bit low-scoring, you have to find ways to win in different ways, right?
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: And I think to UMass's credit, they're doing that.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: I don't think we're gonna get a low-scoring game between EPU and UMass, but we just make the point nonetheless.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Um, also want to acknowledge Cole O'Hara, right?
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: Who had an assist in that game.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: He created the goal for Mercury, the first goal.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: He's up to 50 points now on the season.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: He is just the second UMass player in the D1 era to ever get to 50 points.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: So pretty remarkable accomplishment for O'Hara.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Uh, and he will take on this BU group, who again has not been afraid to score, right?
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: They scored 14 goals the final weekend of the season against Providence and Vermont.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: So again, I don't think we're gonna get a low-scoring game, but you know, you never know.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's the playoffs.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: You never know.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: There's fewer penalties to be had, so that will certainly factor into the games as well.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: And we'll get into those power plays either way because they're important to talk about.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: But so look at some of the players for BU that have been piling on those goals and points over the last few weeks, and in particular, this last two games of the regular season.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Quin Hudson, our service credit union scoring leader up to 1.44 points per game.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: That's the national lead.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: He's got 46 points in 32 games, seven points the last weekend, four assists versus PC.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: That was last weekend, seven points last weekend.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just last weekend.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just last weekend.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: And then and then you see, and that's Quinn Hudson, and his brother Cole Hudson also scored in four straight games to end the season.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: And Cole Eiserman had a four-goal weekend.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: He had a hat-trick against Providence, and then he scored another goal in the final game of the regular season against UVM.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: These are players that we knew about their scoring ability, but they're just finishing at the right times, and they're producing so much offense.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: And this another thing that that interests me about this matchup is that the first two meetings of the season came back in December, and it was a different goalie matchup.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Michael Rabble wasn't net for UMass, he'll be in net again for them in the quarterfinal, but it was Mechukuran back then in net for BU.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be Mike Yogorov this time, and his numbers have been better.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: So this is a different look in terms of goaltending.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: So maybe maybe it's defended in a different way as well.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: And to look at special teams, both of these power plays are top in hockey east.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: BU is 27%, that's first in hockey east, fourth nationally.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: UMass is 25%, that's second in hockey and eighth nationally.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: So these are some really high-powered power plays, but across the opening round games on Wednesday, we didn't see a lot of penalties called.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: So maybe those don't factor in quite as much.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: So where do the special teams matchups lie?
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Should be really interesting to see.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: That's 4 30 over at Agantis Arena.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: You'll be there with Cooper Boardman, should be a lot of fun.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: Two other quarterfinal games to tell you about on Saturday as we decide who's going to TD Garden that's coming up on this week in Hockey East.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: Welcome back to This Week in Hockey East.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: Time to continue around Hockey East, presented by Boston Harbor Hotel.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: It'll be the number one seed Boston College taking on their beanpot rivals, Northeastern, as Northeastern outlasts Merrimack in double overtime with the game winner by Dylan Ritzkovian.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: You were there, Bridget.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, how did Northeastern get this done?
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: Well, they they were just able to hold on long enough.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: They actually looked pretty exhausted in the first overtime.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: They came out with a little bit fresher legs in the second overtime.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Maybe the the intermission helped them get their legs back under them, but they they did look tired, and but they were able to get contributions from that first line through the whole night.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: Each guy had two points in the game.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: And it started out with that first line score, or it started out with Chris Octelier scoring, assisted by Cam Lund.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: He had a really nice setup pass on the play.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: And Telier is a guy that came over from Quinnipia.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: He had won a national title there.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: He's kind of a big game type of player.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: So he gets Northeastern on the board one to nothing.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: But then Merrimack scored two goals really quickly, and that all happened in the second period.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: So they end up going to the third down by one.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: And it was a game-tying goal by Jack Williams, the captain, in the third period that sent the game to the first overtime.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: And a scary moment for him in that first overtime.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: He went knee to knee.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: He went immediately down the tunnel and got looked at, but then came back only a few minutes later.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: So he ended up being okay, comes back during the first overtime, and then we head to a second overtime.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: No goals.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Some great goaltending in that overtime period as well.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: So Dylan Ritzkovian is the hero in overtime.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: He gets the game-winning goal.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: And it is an unfortunate situation where Cam Kungle, the defenseman for Merrimack, blocks the shot, but it just comes right to Ritzkovian and he puts it in, finishes the game.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: And so Northeastern season will continue.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Merrimack will go home.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: And Ritzkovian, you know, once again, that first line, contributing in a lot of ways for Northeastern.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: They're going to be key again this weekend when they go on to play the number one seed and the number one team in the tournament.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: Cam Whitehead, though, stopped 44 of 46 shots that he faced, and he looked pretty confident in net.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, when he's right, we know how good he is.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: It's just a question of whether he was, and that's a new career high for him.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that Williams, Ritzkovian, and Lund, those three are responsible for 59% of Northeastern's goals this year.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: They're so important.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: They do have a win against Boston College.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: It was back in November, but they did beat the Eagles 4-2 at Matthews Arena.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: BC won the first game of that series and then had the big eight goal output in the beanpot semifinals.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Um, BC totally controlled that game Saturday against Merrimack.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: Because of Maine's loss on Friday, there was nothing really on the line, right?
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: They basically locked up the number one seed in the tournament.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: They had locked up the number one seed in the Hockey East tournament, but still in total control, 6-0 victory.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: And that's the kind of things that you want to see.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: Just a couple notes on Boston College.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: We've obviously talked a lot about them.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Ryan Leonard scored again in that game on Saturday.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: And this is not so much to talk about his national lead in goals, which is 29 goals.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: He's way up there, but that was his 14th goal that either tied the game or gave Boston College the lead, right?
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: He's got a ton of game-winning goals.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: He's tied for first nationally.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: And we talk about that stat a lot, but sometimes that stat can be skewed because you might get a goal really early on in the game.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: But 14 to either tie it or give BC the lead, that certainly stands out and has to be the most in the country.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: And BC's getting some depth scoring too from their defenseman now.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: Eamon Powell had three assists on Saturday.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: He now has 13 points in his last 13 games.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: Lucas Gustafson made that great play along the wall to set up Teddy Stekas.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: So the defense is really contributing.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: And then I know we've started to talk about this a little bit, but it's hard to describe how good Jacob Fowler's been.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: And I think kind of crazily it's been a little under the radar.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: So here's a note for you from our good friend Brian Smith finding this one.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: Jacob Fowler in Hockey East games this year finished with a 945 save percentage and a 158 goals against average over 22 starts.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: Do you know the number of people who have started more than 13 games in league games and have had a lower goals against average than that in Hockey East?
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: The answer is zero.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: It's the lowest goals against average in hockey's play of a regular starter in the history of the league.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: There's been better goals against averages, Jimmy Howard, Connor Hellebuck, but they didn't play as the main starter all year.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: So just to show how good Jacob Fowler has been, it's the type of performance that could backstop a team to a championship.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: And BC will try to win another trophy this weekend.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: We'll continue on with our final quarterfinal and talk about the BU women on the other side on this week in Hockey East.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: Welcome back to This Week in Hockey East.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: We continue around Hockey East presented by Boston Children's Hospital, the official children's hospital of Hockey East.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: Well, UMass Lowell gets it done.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: Another overtime game.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: They get the victory over UNH after losing two games to UNH the final couple of games of the regular season.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: Scout Truman has the overtime winner.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: He's our night shift all-academic standout for the week.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: Um, it was nice to see him get on the board.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: It was nice to see Chris Delaney get on the board.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: He had such a good start to the season.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: We talked a lot about him early in the year.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: The goal scoring hasn't been as much recently, but he does have points in four straight games down the stretch now.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: But just big picture for Lowell here.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: First win since February 15th.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: It had to be good just to get kind of the monkey off their back of this streak and get a victory.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: And now who knows, right?
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: Maybe they have a chance to go on a run.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: And I'm not predicting this, but you know, if they find a way, predicting it in terms of where the pairwise is, if they find a way to beat Maine, which, you know, look, Lowell is certainly capable of doing that, they're right back in the pairwise conversation.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: Uh, they'll be at TD Garden, they'll potentially have a chance.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: So all of a sudden, even despite this streak here, they have a real opportunity to go up to Maine.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: You have a Maine team that won just two of six points against UMass last weekend, but it's still, you know, worth resetting.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: They've only lost two hockey games in regulation the whole second semester.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: So they've continued to be really good.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: Alvin Boy has continued to be really good.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: I think if Maine gets the offense that we saw at the end of February, they have a real chance and it'll be tough for Lowell to keep up.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: But Lowell is really good when they're playing to their structure of keeping teams to the outside.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: And Maine at times second semester, that offense really hasn't clicked in the same way it did in the first semester.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: Not bad, but just not in the same way.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: So it'll be an interesting matchup.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: Main swept Lowell at the Songus Center in January.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: So interested to see, obviously, a really difficult environment for Lowell going up to Alphonse and trying to get a victory as Main tries to get back to the garden for the second year in a row.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: And we're also going to look at the BU women's hockey team.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: They just coming off a win in the Women's Hockey East Championship game.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: It's their first time going to the NCAA tournament in 10 years, since 2015, when Marie Philippe Poulin was a senior for the Terriers.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: And back when they were playing their hockey East Championship games in Hyannis, that was the set location back then.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: It feels like a long time ago.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: Well, it was 10 years ago, so I guess that makes sense.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: Um, BU had an up and down month of February.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: And then once they got into the tournament, they really only led for about eight minutes up throughout all three games.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Every game went to overtime, and there was always a hero at the end of the game in those situations.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: So it starts with a 4-3 overtime win against Vermont.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: Riley Walsh was the game-winning hero of that one.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Then a 3-2 overtime win against Boston College.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: Lindsay Bachner, the transfer from PC, gets that overtime game winner.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: And then in the championship game at Toscano Family Ice Forum was hosted at UConn, it was an 3-2 overtime win against Northeastern.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Sydney Healy is the overtime game winner.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: She is our Jersey Mike's sub-above women's player of the week.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: And so you're getting these clutch performances, but you're having to come from behind.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: So now BU has to find a way to really just maybe get some better starts in those games and be more consistent in those games, but they've found ways to win.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: And it is not easy to beat Northeastern in the championship game of the women's Hockey East tournament.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: So congratulations to BU on making their first trip to the national tournament since 2015.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: The women's national tournament is on ESPN Plus over the next couple of weeks, going up through the final, which is on March 23rd.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: When we come back, we'll take some short shifts here on This Week in Hockey East.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Time to take some short shifts as we wrap up our show presented by the Shift Group, helping former athletes and veterans become elite business professionals.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Bunch of Hockey's men's awards were announced this week.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: Bridget, what stood out to you?
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, our first round of awards coming out.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: We'll take you through the Defensive Defenseman Award going to Eamon Powell from Boston College.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: It's been such a great back end that he's been a leader of for BC this season.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: And then the best defensive forward award going to Hudson Shandor of Yukon.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: He's taken home a lot of hardware already, and we're not even done yet.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: So Hudson Shandor, our best defensive forward, he also gets the Lynn Kaglarski Sportsmanship Award and was the runner-up for the Hockey East scoring leader with 33 points in his hockey East games.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: Of course, Ryan Leonard is the hockey East scoring leader.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: He had uh another wonderful season as a sophomore.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: He had 37 points in his hockey East games and he had 25 goals included in that.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: He's currently the national leader in goals as well with 29 goals in 34 games.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: So he's just up there.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: No surprise to see him taking home that category.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: And then the stop at goaltender of the year, Jacob Fowler from Boston College, leads Hockey East in goals against average and safe percentage.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: He's also top three in the country in both of those categories, and he's tied for most wins of any goalie in the country with 24.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm really glad to see Hudson Shandor get acknowledged as much as he was.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: You know, Mike Kavanaugh's been very on the record that the biggest turning point for UConn this year was when John Spetz and Hudson Shandor decided to come back to Yukon this summer.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Uh so he's talked a lot about that, and Shandor is certainly deserving of those awards.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, the other big thing was the pro ambitions all rookie team, which came out.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, you had Callum Tung, who had a really nice year in goal for Yukon.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: Cole Hudson was obviously phenomenal this year for BU.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: James Haggins, Teddy Stega for Boston College, Cole Eiserman.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: But then maybe two guys we didn't talk quite as much about.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: Francesco Delche for UMass.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: He was so solid, ran the power play for a little while on the first power play unit this year, is running on the second unit most of the season.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: And Colin Kessler, who I thought was maybe the best player on the ice for Vermont the whole day on Wednesday, he had a really solid year.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Notably, he had a goal in that game Wednesday, at 11 assists on the year.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: All 11 assists were primary assists for Kessler.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: Pretty impressive.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: So that's your Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team more awards coming out next week.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: And make sure to get tickets.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: The balcony is sold out for the Hockey East Championship weekend.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, we will see which four teams are going there, but make sure you get your tickets while you still can over at ticketmaster.com.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: Thanks so much for joining us for another episode of This Week in Hockey East.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Can't wait to bring you these playoff games, and we'll talk to you next week ahead of the guard.
