- 0:00Speaker 1: And this is your book, The Ultimate Guide to CIA Skills, Tactics,
- 0:03Speaker 1: and Techniques. Is there a basic one you can give
- 0:05Speaker 1: us out of the book, man, that's just something that
- 0:07Speaker 1: you can notice about people?
- 0:08Speaker 2: Yeah, the part that I'm proudest of in this book
- 0:11Speaker 2: is the section on surveillance and surveillance detection. I took
- 0:14Speaker 2: it so seriously that I actually became a surveillance instructor
- 0:18Speaker 2: at the CIA for the last two years that I
- 0:21Speaker 2: was at headquarters. I'll tell you, something that happened to
- 0:25Speaker 2: me when I was in Pakistan, I was always very, very,
- 0:28Speaker 2: very careful about my own personal security. And I noticed
- 0:35Speaker 2: one day, I was staying at a guest house, a
- 0:39Speaker 2: little 14-room guest house. And I noticed one day there's
- 0:43Speaker 2: a guy in a motorcycle. He's trying really hard to
- 0:45Speaker 2: stay in my blind spot. And the only reason I
- 0:47Speaker 2: even noticed him was he had a red motorcycle helmet on.
- 0:51Speaker 2: And nobody in Pakistan wore motorcycle helmets. I don't even
- 0:54Speaker 2: know where you would buy a motorcycle helmet. So I
- 0:57Speaker 2: was like, huh, that's funny. I speed up, he speeds up.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I slow down, he slows down. I change lanes, he
- 1:02Speaker 2: changes lanes. I'm like, oh, this isn't good. I get
- 1:05Speaker 2: to the entrance to the diplomatic quarter, which was the
- 1:07Speaker 2: part of town where all the embassies were, and he
- 1:09Speaker 2: breaks off. Well, I work like 14, 15, 16 hours
- 1:13Speaker 2: every single day. I get to work when it's dark.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I leave work when it's dark. And so I pull
- 1:18Speaker 2: out of the diplomatic quarter and the guy's on me again.
- 1:22Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, this is definitely not good.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I was worried about it all night. So the next
- 1:29Speaker 2: morning I get up at five o'clock in the morning
- 1:30Speaker 2: and I'm taking a different route to work every day.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I'm leaving at a different time every day. My routes
- 1:35Speaker 2: to work don't make any sense just to make sure
- 1:37Speaker 2: I'm not being followed. And now twice I am being followed.
- 1:40Speaker 2: There's a definition of surveillance at the CIA. It's multiple
- 1:43Speaker 2: sightings at time and distance. So you see the person
- 1:47Speaker 2: more than once at different times of the day and
- 1:50Speaker 2: at different places. So we have a database. So I
- 1:54Speaker 2: put in the database when I first arrived. I think
- 1:56Speaker 2: I'm under surveillance. It's a motorcycle. Here's the license number.
- 1:59Speaker 2: This is a description of the guy. He's wearing a
- 2:01Speaker 2: red helmet. Next day, I get up at five o'clock
- 2:04Speaker 2: in the morning. I just opened the door a crack.
- 2:07Speaker 2: I look up and down the street. I don't see anybody.
- 2:09Speaker 2: So they had assigned us these like poles, these retracting
- 2:13Speaker 2: poles with a mirror on the bottom. So I look
- 2:15Speaker 2: under my car. I don't see any explosives or tracking
- 2:18Speaker 2: devices or anything. So you got to be careful, you know?
- 2:21Speaker 2: So I get in the car. I go like two
- 2:23Speaker 2: blocks and the guy's on me again. So I finally
- 2:28Speaker 2: get to the office and I waited for the security
- 2:31Speaker 2: officer to come in. And I said, listen, I'm under surveillance.
- 2:35Speaker 2: I'm a hundred percent sure I'm under surveillance. I told
- 2:37Speaker 2: him about the three sightings. He's like, Ooh, this isn't good.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I said, I know. He said, we have to wait
- 2:42Speaker 2: until the chief comes in. So finally the chief comes
- 2:45Speaker 2: in around seven and I said, I'm under surveillance, a
- 2:49Speaker 2: hundred percent certain. So, I explained to him the three
- 2:54Speaker 2: different sightings and he's like, well, you know what you
- 2:59Speaker 2: have to do. And I said, I, I know. He goes,
- 3:02Speaker 2: you never popped your cherry that way. Did you?
- 3:05Speaker 1: Let's shoot somebody.
- 3:06Speaker 2: And I said, nope, never needed to. He's like, well,
- 3:10Speaker 2: we're going to have, we're going to have teams out there.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Don't worry. We're going to have guys all around you.
- 3:14Speaker 2: You're not going to be alone. I'm like, okay, all right.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I was very worried. So I get back to my office.
- 3:19Speaker 2: My office, it was me. I was the only staff
- 3:22Speaker 2: officer and six retirees who had all been in the
- 3:25Speaker 2: senior intelligence service. Every one of the six had either
- 3:29Speaker 2: been the chief or deputy chief of Near Eastern Operations.
- 3:32Speaker 2: One had been the assistant deputy director of the CIA,
- 3:36Speaker 2: but they all came back after 9-11 for patriotic reasons.
- 3:39Speaker 2: But if you're a contractor, you can't be the chief.
- 3:43Speaker 2: So they all worked for me, right? And word got around.
- 3:46Speaker 2: They're like, don't worry, buddy. We're all going to be
- 3:48Speaker 2: out there. Don't worry about a thing. I'm like, I'm
- 3:50Speaker 2: very worried. That afternoon, I have a meeting at a
- 3:55Speaker 2: safe house that we shared with the Pakistani intelligence service.
- 3:59Speaker 2: We interrogated a prisoner and I get up to leave
- 4:03Speaker 2: and I don't know what possessed me to stop. And
- 4:06Speaker 2: I turned and I said, General Muhammad, are you following me?
- 4:11Speaker 2: And he says, no, why? I said, because I'm under surveillance.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I'm a hundred percent sure that I'm under surveillance and
- 4:18Speaker 2: I'm going to kill the guy this afternoon. And he's like, no,
- 4:21Speaker 2: it's not us. I never saw him again. So weeks later,
- 4:27Speaker 2: we heard that a bunch of them were sitting around
- 4:29Speaker 2: the table and one of them said, the new guy, Kiriakou,
- 4:33Speaker 2: he's a nice guy. And everybody's like, yeah, he's a
- 4:36Speaker 2: very nice guy. And then one of them said, you
- 4:39Speaker 2: know what? Nobody's that nice. He's probably being nice just
- 4:44Speaker 2: to trick us into a sense of complacency. We don't
- 4:49Speaker 2: know what he's doing when he's not here. He's probably
- 4:52Speaker 2: spying on us. I wasn't. But they put the worst
- 4:58Speaker 2: surveillance officer. in the entire Pakistani intelligence service on me.
- 5:03Speaker 2: So instead of two blocks back, he's right there in
- 5:05Speaker 2: my blind spot. And it was only because I stopped
- 5:09Speaker 2: before I got to the door that afternoon and asked
- 5:11Speaker 2: General Muhammad if they were following me. That's the only
- 5:15Speaker 2: reason that guy's not in the ground today. I was
- 5:18Speaker 2: gonna kill him that afternoon. Oh yes, I was.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Because I was convinced he was gonna kill me. That's crazy, bro. Dang, dude,
- 5:29Speaker 1: I think everybody wants to shoot somebody. But they don't
- 5:32Speaker 1: let you.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I worked with a guy, great friend, go to the
- 5:35Speaker 2: same church, from the same men's group. They don't let you.
- 5:37Speaker 2: And he's a psychiatrist. Sorry, you made me laugh. He's
- 5:41Speaker 2: a psychiatrist. And he said to me, I find it
- 5:45Speaker 2: fascinating that you don't have PTSD. And I said, is
- 5:50Speaker 2: that good or bad? He said, from a psychiatric point
- 5:52Speaker 2: of view? And I said, yeah.
- 5:53Speaker 1: He goes, not good. I said, I wasn't afraid of
- 5:57Speaker 1: those people, Steve. I was not afraid of them. Yeah,
- 6:01Speaker 1: it is interesting, man. The things that we hold, what's
- 6:03Speaker 1: going on inside of us, you know, how it comes out,
- 6:06Speaker 1: what gets figured out, you know.
- 6:09Speaker 2: You just never know. You never know what's going to
- 6:10Speaker 2: bother you. You never know what's going to stick in
- 6:12Speaker 2: your mind and bother you and fester for years. It happens.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Yeah. The stories, man. And about just making a story,
- 6:21Speaker 1: you know. I mean, you seem like the kind of
- 6:23Speaker 1: guy that likes to make a story, you know. I
- 6:25Speaker 1: like telling these stories. And people say- I am living
- 6:28Speaker 1: a story though.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh, listen, I'm an adrenaline junkie. I
- 6:31Speaker 2: don't know what I would do if I didn't have
- 6:32Speaker 2: these stories in my past. I'd be like, oh my God.
- 6:35Speaker 2: My first wife, she's like, I want to move back
- 6:37Speaker 2: to Ohio and I want you to sell car insurance
- 6:39Speaker 2: with my cousin Dean. I said, I would rather cut
- 6:41Speaker 2: my throat than move to Ohio and sell insurance with
- 6:45Speaker 2: your cousin Dean.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I'd rather join the Aryan Brotherhood in prison.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Seriously. Seriously.
- 6:49Speaker 1: And you did.
- 6:50Speaker 2: And I did.
- 6:51Speaker 1: So I think, look, insurance next time.
