Transcript
- 0:00And right now, we're talking baseball with Matt Adams, the
- 0:02former Cardinal. Why am I saying Matt Adams?
- 0:05It's big city. That's how folks know him.
- 0:07And he's going to be retiring officially this week.
- 0:09A ceremony at Busch Stadium, sort of fitting where it all
- 0:12began. Drafted by the Cardinals,
- 0:14debuted in 2012. Matt, great to have you on the
- 0:17program. How's your world these days?
- 0:21Pretty busy these last couple of days with with the announcement
- 0:24of the retirement, what not, but super excited and super stoked
- 0:29that and grateful that the Cardinals were were able to pull
- 0:32this off and that they're welcoming, you know, me and my
- 0:36family to come down and and celebrate my career.
- 0:39Yeah, I think we've seen this in football where players will come
- 0:42back and do like a one day contract and officially retire
- 0:45with the team they played the bulk of their career for.
- 0:47I haven't seen it as much in baseball.
- 0:49How does that come about? Is it you, your agent, you reach
- 0:52out? How?
- 0:53How do you get this done? Yeah, we, you know, I kind of
- 0:58after the season in Mexico was over, kind of, you know, got
- 1:02home and took a deep breath and just, you know, kind of chatted
- 1:05with my wife about what was next.
- 1:07And we just we kind of got talking about how cool it would
- 1:10be, you know, this is home now for us and just how cool it
- 1:15would be whenever I was ready to now it's my retirement to to
- 1:20reach out to the Cardinals and see if they'd be willing to, you
- 1:22know, do the honorary one day contract for for me to be able
- 1:26to retire Cardinal. And I just, I, I reached out to,
- 1:29to MO have a have a pretty good relationship with him for my
- 1:34playing days with the Cardinals. And I just reached out to him
- 1:38and, and took a shot. Didn't know what the answer was
- 1:40going to be, but I figured the worst case scenario, he would
- 1:43say no, but at least I tried. But he, you know, he got back to
- 1:47me and, and said that they would, they would be able to,
- 1:50you know, do their best to make it work.
- 1:52And just super, like I said, super, super grateful that it
- 1:56came to be and just looking forward to tomorrow night at the
- 2:00ballpark. Very cool for a 23rd round pick
- 2:04coming out of Slippery Rock. What did you think when they
- 2:06drafted you? You know 23rd round is your goal
- 2:09just to get a big league at bat? Is your?
- 2:11I mean, are you thinking big back then?
- 2:14No, but I, I mean, I, I always, you know, my dream was always
- 2:18to, to play and, and have a career at the big league level.
- 2:21And as soon as, you know, I heard my name called at the
- 2:25draft, I, I knew that, that, that, that was day one.
- 2:28That was, that was when the real work started and showed up and
- 2:33hit the ground running, had, you know, Shilpi as my, my first pro
- 2:36ball manager. So I've got to got to learn from
- 2:38one of the best and just really, really had fun with it.
- 2:44And just, I think, I think at that point, you know, 23rd
- 2:47round, there's guys in the big leagues that, you know, that
- 2:50went later than the 23rd round. But I, I think, you know, the
- 2:54odds tell us that we're not supposed to make it.
- 2:58And where I came from, you know, where I grew up, where I went to
- 3:02school like those, those guys don't really make it.
- 3:05But I, I wanted, I wanted to be different and just showed up and
- 3:09really put my head down and, and got to work and, and busted my
- 3:12butt and just wanted to give myself the best chance and, and
- 3:15it all worked out the the way that God had it planned.
- 3:18Am I crazy or did 1 spring training?
- 3:21I feel like Bill Parcells really liked you or would talk to you a
- 3:24bunch or would mention or didn't Parcells take a liking to you?
- 3:29Yeah, he did. I, I, I think it was like two or
- 3:32three years in a row. He showed up at spring training
- 3:35and we, we got the just chat behind the, you know, the BP
- 3:40turtle. And I don't know if he was
- 3:41trying to recruit me to, to switch sports and try to come
- 3:44over and play in the NFL because back then I was, I was big, big
- 3:47city. So I don't, I don't know what
- 3:51how that came about, but that was that was really cool being a
- 3:54sports fan and being being able to talk to to one of the the
- 3:58great NFL coaches. It was.
- 4:00It was great. And when when did that name
- 4:02stick? Was it spring training?
- 4:04I think freeze like overheard it but do we?
- 4:07Does anybody taken claim for the nickname?
- 4:10Yeah, You know, it was Freeze was definitely the one that kept
- 4:13it rolling, but Berkman was actually the latest.
- 4:16Berkman was the one that actually threw it out there and
- 4:19started it because he, he came up to me and knew where I was
- 4:23from. Small, Like small out in the
- 4:26country town and big, big dude. And he came up, put his arm
- 4:31around me and was like, I'm tired of these big guys being
- 4:34nicknamed big country. So we're going to call you big
- 4:36city and just kind of kind of stuck and really, really cool
- 4:42nickname. I love it.
- 4:43You know, my teammates love it. It's it's been a lot of fun
- 4:47being able to ride with that nickname throughout my career.
- 4:50But it's crazy because I texted somebody the other day and I
- 4:53said I thought I had Matt Adams phone number, but I guess I
- 4:55don't. They sent it back and then when
- 4:57I start messaging it, it pops up in my phone.
- 5:00But I had it under big city. Didn't even have your name on
- 5:03it. How about how about for friends
- 5:05and family outside of baseball? Did it stick with them?
- 5:09Yeah, I mean my, you know, obviously close family.
- 5:12They, they call me mad or Matthew if I'm in trouble.
- 5:16But you know, friends though, you know, friends, teammates
- 5:21close to acquaintances, though, though, you know, go, go drop
- 5:24the city in there. And they, they, they keep it
- 5:26going for Stern. I, I love it.
- 5:28I loved it. You know, it's not just a
- 5:30nickname on the field, but it's, you know, kind of off the field
- 5:33as well. So we'll do our best to keep it
- 5:36rolling. Was any of it it, you know, the,
- 5:38the background smaller town guy, but bigger guy.
- 5:42So kind of a joke a little bit about your weight.
- 5:44Was that part of it? Yeah, I I I mean, I Winston say
- 5:49that to my face, but I definitely kind of read the the
- 5:52writing on the wall. So I'm going to I'm going to
- 5:55think that that all was in play with with that decision to come
- 5:58up with that nickname, but love it.
- 6:01You know, it just did it stuck and you know that that's what
- 6:05you know, the game. Like the guys in baseball and
- 6:09and everybody, that's what they remind like Remember Me as and I
- 6:11I think going to have a nickname that that stays with you.
- 6:15And then you lost a bunch of weight, got real fit and I think
- 6:18we joked, oh, now he's just a community or a municipality.
- 6:21And we had we had a ton of fun with that.
- 6:23When tell me and I know you're is your wife from Saint Louis.
- 6:27She's from Highland Park, suburb of Chicago, but you know, she's
- 6:32been, she's been living here in Saint Louis.
- 6:35You know, at the time she was working, she's worked with
- 6:38professional athletes for, you know, 20 plus years, training
- 6:42them, helping them, you know, get the most out of their
- 6:44bodies. And, you know, the Cardinals
- 6:47brought her down to spring training in in 16 and kind of
- 6:53talked with a group of guys, put us through a pilot session.
- 6:57And after that one session, my body felt great.
- 7:01And I was still a bigger guy at the time, but kind of up to that
- 7:05point had had some crazy injuries that that kept me off
- 7:10the field for some time. And I knew if I wanted to, you
- 7:14know, keep playing this game at a high level and I wanted to get
- 7:17the most out of my career, do that I needed to make a change.
- 7:21And so I sat down with her towards the end of spring
- 7:24training and asked if she would be willing to, you know, listen
- 7:29to my like story and, and, and be willing to help me out lose
- 7:33some weight, get get my body in a, in a better position to
- 7:37withstand a, a long season. And throughout the season came
- 7:41up with a, a plan and a program in place.
- 7:43And 16, you know, after that season, you know, it was the
- 7:48first season, like offseason, where I, I stayed in Saint Louis
- 7:52full time and lost 30. I think it was close to 40
- 7:57pounds, 3738 lbs and over 10% body fat and just came back
- 8:02spring training 17 super healthy, felt great and felt
- 8:07like my body was in a finally in a position to where, you know, I
- 8:11could, I could withstand, you know, 162 game plus season.
- 8:15That's at the highest level. See, now Parcells would say, all
- 8:18right, I was going to have you on my old line.
- 8:19Now you're a linebacker shift to you.
- 8:22Well, and I wonder for somebody who has, but part of your size
- 8:26is your strength, too. Did you worry at all?
- 8:28Hey, man, I might lose a little bit of, you know, my power.
- 8:33At, at first that was, that was definitely a thought that was in
- 8:35the back of my mind because I, I never trained like this before.
- 8:39But, you know, getting into the batting cages every week and,
- 8:45you know, hitting with the, the data and seeing the numbers, you
- 8:48know, the numbers were higher than they ever were for me.
- 8:51So I knew that, that I was doing things right.
- 8:54But whenever I showed up the spring training, I definitely
- 8:57like losing all that weight so fast.
- 9:00I think I lost in three months or, or what not, I definitely
- 9:04lost some muscle with it. So like it took me, you know,
- 9:07the first month of spring training, it was still kind of
- 9:10feeling like I felt a little weak, not super weak, but just
- 9:15not like myself. So it, it, it there was
- 9:18definitely a transition phase to where took my body a little bit
- 9:22to to feel great back out on the ball field doing, you know,
- 9:26operating at a in a high level. But no, I settled right in and
- 9:32and and I didn't worry about that from from then on.
- 9:35Matt Adams, our guest, the former Cardinal Big city
- 9:38official retirement from Major League Baseball Wednesday before
- 9:41the Cards. Pirates games played 2012
- 9:43through 2017 in Saint Louis. Played for the Cardinals twice,
- 9:47the Nationals twice, the Braves twice.
- 9:49That's when you know you're a good guy when they want you back
- 9:51multiple places. But let's talk about that era
- 9:54when you got here because Berkman you mentioned was still
- 9:58around, Carlos Beltran was coming through here, Holiday was
- 10:01here. I mean there.
- 10:02There were just some great veteran players for you.
- 10:05A young guy would think to sort of just learn from even if they
- 10:08weren't hands on just observing. Yeah, no, I mean, that's exactly
- 10:13what I did. You know, I was, I was very,
- 10:15very fortunate and, and super grateful that that I was part of
- 10:19those teams of, you know, like you said, baseball greats,
- 10:23learning, learning from the game's best.
- 10:25And you know, some of them were hands on, some of them just kind
- 10:29of led by example and, and, and who I am as a person.
- 10:32I showed up early, got my work in and then I was, I was able to
- 10:37watch those guys go about their business and, and learn from
- 10:41them. What it, what it takes, you
- 10:42know, how to come up with a routine, a daily routine to
- 10:47where you're ready to go when those lights come on at 7:00
- 10:50every night, to go out there and perform at your best.
- 10:53And you know, that's just, that's what helped shape me to
- 10:59be, you know, the player that I, I was throughout the course of
- 11:02my career and, and, and even more so the, the person that I
- 11:05am off the, off the baseball field.
- 11:07What a great time in terms of winning a lot of October
- 11:10moments, 2012, 1314, even making the playoffs in 15.
- 11:14You of course famous for the swing of Kershaw by that play
- 11:18has been I mean, the Cardinals have a ton of incredible October
- 11:21moments. But man, that swing against
- 11:23Kershaw, decisive swing sending the Cardinals to the NLCS.
- 11:28It's it's part of the Cardinal legend.
- 11:30How cool for you and how much fun is it for you that that will
- 11:33live on forever? Yeah, it's awesome.
- 11:36I, you know, you just talking about it right now, just, you
- 11:39know, I got the chills over here thinking about that moment and,
- 11:42you know, probably seen it a few times up on the Jumbotron
- 11:45tomorrow night at the ballpark. And it's, it's, it's great.
- 11:49It's it's it's going to be great for me to be able to share that
- 11:51moment, you know, with my family and my friends, my wife, just,
- 11:57you know, in the fans, the the fans of Bush and in the carnival
- 12:00organization is like, it's it's amazing.
- 12:02And I've had, you know, guys that I've played separate
- 12:07dugouts come up to me during the game and was like, dude, I
- 12:10remember where I was when you hit that home or off curse it
- 12:12like it's just cold. It like that's a defining moment
- 12:15of my career. And nowadays I look back and
- 12:19like, if, if that would have been, you know, 2021-2022,
- 12:272023-2024, I don't think I would have got that opportunity
- 12:30because nowadays not, not many left-handed hitters get to face
- 12:35some of the games best left-handed hitters.
- 12:37It's, it's a lot of platoon situations and, and the game is
- 12:41just different. So I'm, I'm super grateful that
- 12:43I, I had that moment under my belt and, and I was able to, you
- 12:47know, help our team move along deeper into October and, and,
- 12:51you know, play for a championship for sure.
- 12:53I think the celebration added to it.
- 12:55It wasn't quite Carlton Fisk waving the ball fair at Fenway
- 12:58Park, but just the kind of double barrelled, you know, I
- 13:02would call it like a forearm pump or whatever.
- 13:04That just added to it. And the Cardinals beat Kershaw
- 13:08in 2013. Twice that year, Marco Gonzalez
- 13:11was 2 and O in the NLCS, and Kershaw was owing to.
- 13:15He's got great regular season numbers against the Cardinals,
- 13:18but isn't it crazy how back-to-back Octobers you guys
- 13:21were able to beat him? Yeah, it's, it's, it's wild.
- 13:24And everybody thought that, you know, we that he was tipping
- 13:28pitches and and whatnot that we had him.
- 13:30But like I it's just we for whatever reason, we just, we
- 13:35hunkered down. We we, you know, stuck our nose
- 13:39into the game and we just, we competed our butts off and we
- 13:42were able to get to him. And, you know, he's he's gonna
- 13:45go to he's one of the best pitchers that ever pitching this
- 13:48game. And it's just kind of crazy to
- 13:51think about the, you know, 13 and 14, the the amount of times
- 13:54that we were able to, you know, crack them and and get to him.
- 13:56It's it was pretty special for us.
- 13:58I remember seeing you in Washington then in, you know,
- 14:012019, the, the Nationals blast the Cardinals in that NLCS
- 14:05wasn't as exciting as some of the other Octobers right here.
- 14:08You win a World Series there, and that was the team.
- 14:11I mean, I don't think Dave Martinez was getting fired, but
- 14:13that team started really slow and people were saying, man,
- 14:17there's too much talent. They got Soto and you got
- 14:19Rendon. How come they're not better in
- 14:21Strasbourg? What do you remember about that
- 14:23team putting it together? Yeah.
- 14:26I mean, we started, we were 19 and 32 through our first 51
- 14:30games and we were, it was, it was we were at a rough part in
- 14:35the year. And we, we made a couple key,
- 14:37key additions with we got Gerardo Parra and Annabel
- 14:42Sanchez over there. And the two of them just kind of
- 14:45like cracked everybody's shell and got us, got us moving in
- 14:49the, in the everyone in the in the same direction where, you
- 14:52know, we showed up and we wanted to we knew that we had the
- 14:56caliber to win. So we, they just a few changes
- 15:01in the clubhouse got everybody, you know, moving in the right
- 15:04direction. It was the, it, it became more
- 15:06like a family after that point, Like everybody was pulling from
- 15:09one another. We, we wanted to go out there
- 15:12and nobody was worried about their numbers.
- 15:15You know what this guy was hitting, how many home runs this
- 15:17guy has? What you know what, the ERA, how
- 15:20many strikeouts I have. We, we showed up each and every
- 15:22night expecting to win. And that's early on with the
- 15:27Cardinals, that that's what we did like with, with so many
- 15:31great teams that I was a part of in the carnal organization.
- 15:34We, we showed up to the ballpark every every day expecting to
- 15:37win. And that's what that Nationals
- 15:38team in 19 did after that rough start.
- 15:41And we just, we, we, we got that confidence and, and that swagger
- 15:45and we just, we kept rolling with him.
- 15:47We we didn't look back and. You guys won every Rd. game
- 15:51right? The World Series, every win was
- 15:53on the road. Yeah, it was, that was that was
- 15:56a while worse World Series. You know, we we open up in
- 15:59Houston, take the 1st 2:00 and then we we lose the, the next
- 16:02three in DC and then we go back to Houston and, and win the next
- 16:08year. It was just a wild World Series,
- 16:09but like very, very unique games and, you know, moments that I'll
- 16:15cherish forever. Matt Adams, our guest, Big City,
- 16:18retiring from Major League Baseball officially as a
- 16:21Cardinal. The team he played for from
- 16:222012, the 2017, the shift was a deal.
- 16:26Back then. You're a lefty you, but you were
- 16:28pretty good at not having to deal with it.
- 16:31Would you prefer playing now where it's banned or do you
- 16:33think guys should have been able to adapt like we saw you do?
- 16:38I mean, I definitely would have, you know, my average probably
- 16:41would have been a little higher, would have had a few more hits
- 16:43under my belt if you know, if the shift was regulated like it
- 16:48is now. But I, you know, I, I always
- 16:51thought that it was, it was part of the game, but, you know,
- 16:54there's always going to be teams that kind of take it too far.
- 16:57We have 4 guys on one side of second base or moving two guys
- 17:03at the outfield and playing with five output.
- 17:05Like teams just got super creative.
- 17:07And I think, you know, think the league did a good job of, you
- 17:11know, bringing baseball back to closer to where, you know, just
- 17:14baseball being baseball and, you know, keeping two guys on each
- 17:20side of second base. I think it's smarter for the
- 17:21game. I think I think there's more
- 17:24strategy that goes into into the game now.
- 17:26So I it is what it is. But I definitely think I would
- 17:29have had a few more hits and a few more knocks under my belt If
- 17:33if, if it would have been a little bit regulated back back
- 17:35in the day. All right, we'll end it with
- 17:36this. You guys always have incredible
- 17:38memories. How about first big league at
- 17:40bat, last big league at bat? Do you remember it pitch by
- 17:44pitch? Dang, first, first big league
- 17:47about it. Yeah, I only saw one pitch and I
- 17:49got a got a knock up the middle in Dodger Stadium Sunday night
- 17:53baseball against Chad Billingsley.
- 17:59That was first and will be a bat.
- 18:02Last and will be a bat. It's funny because guys never
- 18:05remember the last because they say I didn't know it was going
- 18:07to be my last, That's what. They say exactly I, you know, 21
- 18:11was was not a not a great year dealt with, you know, went to
- 18:16the outside with the Rockies, you know, put up some good
- 18:19numbers, worked hard to to get the call up in 21 out of the
- 18:24outside, but thought a ball off my shin and kind of cracked the
- 18:28casing of my shin and was just battling that was my front leg
- 18:33hitting right. So I really couldn't get into
- 18:35hitting off that front side and and whatnot.
- 18:37So that was a kind of a rough year.
- 18:39So I really don't. I would.
- 18:41I would like to just forget. The what a what a terrible I I I
- 18:45retract. No, no, no.
- 18:46You're good. You're good.
- 18:47I retract the question. What a great first big league at
- 18:50bat at Dodger Stadium. He famously went deep against
- 18:54Clayton Kershaw. Now he's set to retire and he
- 18:56lives in Saint Louis year round. Let's end on that, too.
- 18:59Just the fact you guys, you love it here, right?
- 19:01Saint Louis's home. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:03You know, we, we live in, we live in Clayton and, and we
- 19:07just, you know, being able to, you know, make a life and, and
- 19:11create a life with my wife who I met in this game and never knew
- 19:17that, you know, just starting friends and and whatnot.
- 19:20And then just naturally becoming together and developing a
- 19:26relationship like this is home now.
- 19:29Got 2 step kids, just got an amazing family.
- 19:32We we love it here. There's there's a lot to do the
- 19:35the people are are amazing. And, you know, this is just our
- 19:39speed and, you know, we look forward to, you know, living
- 19:42here years to come and being able to just be around the
- 19:47community and then get back to the community and just, you
- 19:49know, keep pulling this place home.
- 19:51Matt, thanks so much for your time.
- 19:53Great to walk down memory lane. Sorry about that last that bad
- 19:56question. We'll, we'll delete that for the
- 19:58record. But hey, Congrats on the
- 19:59retirement and enjoy the ceremony all.
- 20:02Right. Thank you guys so much.
- 20:03Appreciate it.
