- 1:01I'm your host Tamara K.
- 1:03Anderson, and today we are focusing on proactive defense, learning how to close the gaps before an attack from the adversary even starts.
- 1:14As we talk about how to avoid spiritual attacks, here's what we're going to cover in today's episode first, the Guardrail Principle what Joseph fleeing Potiphar's wife and Psalm 101 can teach us about pre deciding our standards and why
- 1:32I delete Kindle books with swearing.
- 1:35Second, the spiritual radar and de escalation.
- 1:40Here we'll talk about the story of Abigail and how she was able to disarm an entire army and how we can use this technique to help our teens when they are struggling.
- 1:51Third, we'll talk about refusing distractions.
- 1:54Here we'll talk about how Nehemiah resisted distractions.
- 1:57And I'll share a story of how a not to do list led me to step away from a radio show and to have more time for what matters most.
- 2:06Let's begin with our first defense line, pre deciding your standards.
- 2:13When we talk about avoiding spiritual warfare, Scripture is clear that we aren't supposed to see how close we can get to the edge of the cliff.
- 2:23Lets look at Psalm 10:13 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes.
- 2:28I hate the work of them that turn aside it shall not cleave to me.
- 2:34And first, Thessalonians 5:21 22 Paul instructs, prove all things.
- 2:40Hold fast to that which is good.
- 2:43Abstain from all appearance of evil.
- 2:46This is the guardrail principle.
- 2:49Avoiding an attack means establishing generous margins well before you reach dangerous territory.
- 2:57Let's look at the story of Joseph in Genesis 39:7 12 Day after day, Potiphar's wife pressured him to compromise his virtue.
- 3:08Joseph didn't stay in the room to debate, counsel her, or test his willpower.
- 3:13When she grabbed his cloak, Joseph broke free and ran right out of the house.
- 3:19True spiritual strength knows when to outrun the trap.
- 3:25The secret to Joseph escape was that his standard was decided before he even walked in that room.
- 3:32This is a great thing to do with your kids.
- 3:35Sit down with them, whether they're young or teenagers, and help them decide their actions in advance.
- 3:42Right now, what will you do if someone offers you a vape?
- 3:45What will you do if pornography pops up on a friend's phone or on your computer?
- 3:51What will you do when someone starts bullying another kid?
- 3:55When the decision is made in advance, the exit strategy is already there.
- 4:02They know what they're going to do.
- 4:04I've had to apply this exact same rule in my life as an adult.
- 4:09I love to read and years ago I learned I had to become very selective with the books I downloaded onto my Kindle.
- 4:17I noticed a subtle pattern emerging.
- 4:19If a book had casual swearing, it almost led to unvirtuous scenes, compromised morals, or maybe more explicit content.
- 4:28So I made a firm pre decided boundary.
- 4:30The moment I start seeing swearing in a book, I stop reading, close it, and either return it or delete it off my device.
- 4:38I refuse to get to the point where I'm consuming smut because entertaining gray areas in media dims our own spiritual light and leaves kind of a crack in our armor where attacks can slip right through.
- 4:52Our second strategy for avoiding attacks is developing a spiritual early warning system.
- 4:59In Matthew 26:41, the Lord Jesus Christ commands, watch and pray that ye enter not into temptation.
- 5:07The spirit is indeed willing, but the flesh is weak.
- 5:12Notice Jesus didn't just say pray, he said watch and pray so that you do not enter into the trap.
- 5:21Morning prayer is like activating an internal spiritual radar that kind of scans the horizon before the day begins.
- 5:30Look at the story of Abigail in 1 Samuel 25, 1435, her foolish husband Nabal had insulted David and his men.
- 5:39David was furious.
- 5:42He strapped on his sword and marched with his 400 armed men to wipe out Nabal's entire household.
- 5:51Abigail heard about the brewing catastrophe and she didn't sit around waiting for blood to be spilled.
- 5:57She acted immediately, packing up donkey loads of food and riding out.
- 6:02Intercept David.
- 6:03While on the road, with humble and wise words and practical care, Abigail completely de escalated David's anger before a single sword was drawn, saving her household from destruction.
- 6:21Oh my friends and fellow mothers.
- 6:23Avoiding spiritual warfare often looks like wise early de escalation.
- 6:30When you keep your Spiritual radar attuned to heaven in morning prayer, the Holy Spirit can alert you when something feels off in your home.
- 6:39There have been so many times when as a mom, I would be going about my day and I would suddenly feel a distinct spiritual whisper.
- 6:48Go check on your son or go see what's going on with your daughter.
- 6:52I would walk into their room only to find them sitting in tears or drowning in quiet anxiety or fac facing an intense battle in their mind.
- 7:02Because the Lord prompted me to watch and pray, I was able to intervene with God's help, pray with them, cast out the adversaries, discouraging whispers, and intercept the attack before it turned into a crisis.
- 7:18You can do the same with your family.
- 7:21Finally, our third strategy is recognizing when the enemy is using good things to to distract you from the essential things.
- 7:30Let's look at Nehemiah and Nehemiah 6:1:4.
- 7:34The walls of Jerusalem were nearly finished.
- 7:37So the enemies of Israel sent four separate invitations asking Nehemiah to come down and meet them on the plain of Ono to talk.
- 7:47But Nehemiah saw straight through their scheme.
- 7:50He sent back this bold reply.
- 7:54I am doing a great work so that I cannot come down.
- 7:57Why should the work cease while I leave it and come down to you?
- 8:02One of the adversary's primary tactics against Christian women is keeping us so busy with good projects, church responsibilities, helping in the community and endless obligations that we become too exhausted to stand guard over our families.
- 8:20Years ago, I found myself in this exact trap.
- 8:23I was spread so thin that I felt drained spiritually, emotionally and physically.
- 8:29And so I sat down and wrote out a complete inventory of everything, taking my time, what we call our not to do list.
- 8:36And I took it to God in prayer.
- 8:38Lord, what is here that you never asked me to carry?
- 8:43As I prayed, God gave me a very clear, unexpected prompt.
- 8:48He inspired me to step away from a weekly radio show I was hosting with two dear friends and guys.
- 8:54I loved that show.
- 8:55It was good, uplifting work.
- 8:58But it was taking prep time, mental energy and emotional bandwidth that God urgently needed me to invest back in my home.
- 9:07Right at that time, one of my teenage sons was at a hinge point and needed some guidance.
- 9:13God knew where my spiritual presence was needed most.
- 9:17Stepping away from that radio show gave me the time to sit on my son's bed, listen to his heart and pray over him.
- 9:25Saying no to a good thing allowed me to say yes to God's great work for my family.
- 9:32Oh my dear sister.
- 9:33Avoiding spiritual attacks comes down to setting pre decided guardrails keeping your spiritual ears open and courageously clearing off your plate so that you can protect your sacred time and ground.
