Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / Trump's TikTok Deal: The Billionaire Backers
Transcript
- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads, The
- 0:08Shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company and Neurolink.
- 0:13I'm your host Will Walden. President Donald Trump is
- 0:17orchestrating a deal to transfer Tik Tok's US operations from
- 0:21Chinese control to a consortium of American investors, with
- 0:25several of his closest billionaire allies and major
- 0:28tech firms poised to take majority control of the
- 0:31platform. Now, the White House has
- 0:32confirmed Trump will sign an executive order on Thursday
- 0:37finalizing the arrangement that keeps TikTok operational for its
- 0:41170 million American users. Now, this agreement creates a
- 0:46new US joint venture where American investors will control
- 0:50approximately 80% of social media Tik Toks US operations and
- 0:57Bytedance, its parent company, retains less than 20% ownership
- 1:01to comply with the 2024 law requiring divestment from
- 1:05Chinese control. Now, the new entity will be
- 1:08governed by a board of directors with six American seats in one
- 1:13bike dance representative, with Oracle serving as the trusted
- 1:17security provider for all US user data.
- 1:23Now we have to talk about the people that are involved with
- 1:25this because this story is pretty wild.
- 1:30Larry Ellison, this guy. Oracle's executive chairman
- 1:34Larry Ellison stands as the central figure in the
- 1:37acquisition, with Trump explicitly endorsing his
- 1:40involvement from the beginning. Trump's good friend, billionaire
- 1:45Larry Ellison buying a media company that will support Donald
- 1:51Trump. Ellison he became the world's
- 1:54richest person earlier this year over.
- 1:56Elon Musk has been a long time trump friend and ally, and was
- 1:59reportedly involved in discussions about overturning
- 2:02the 2020 election results. Oracle will continue its
- 2:06existing role as Tik Tok's cloud service provider while gaining
- 2:10an ownership stake in controlling the platform's
- 2:13algorithm and security infrastructure.
- 2:16Think about that. Somebody who has close ties with
- 2:20Donald Trump, very close ties in charge of exactly what you're
- 2:27going to see on TikTok. They are controlling the
- 2:31platform's algorithm and also the security infrastructure.
- 2:35They're going to have all of your data, all of your TikTok
- 2:38data. And some people might think,
- 2:39whatever, it's not a big deal. It's just TikTok or silly
- 2:43videos. And I watch cat videos on there
- 2:45and I watch people do insane things, skateboarding and
- 2:48snowboarding and people doing stunts and funny things.
- 2:53They have all of your data. They they don't just have your
- 2:55data for your login and the videos that you watch.
- 2:58They have your exact location, your location, services.
- 3:02If they're not turned off, they'll know exactly where you
- 3:05are at all times. So it's an easy way for the US
- 3:08government to spy on you through Larry Ellison.
- 3:10I'm not tin foil hatting you. I'm just telling you that's what
- 3:14could happen. We know.
- 3:15And it doesn't matter what side you're on, if you're on the left
- 3:18or if you're on the right. This is a really sketchy thing.
- 3:21If the government's best buddy, the the president's best buddy,
- 3:27Larry Ellison over here, his company has control over what
- 3:32you see on your feed, guess what you're going to see?
- 3:37Guess where they're going to lean?
- 3:40Hopefully they only go straight down the middle and just give
- 3:45you what you want. That would be great.
- 3:47Instead of giving you things that maybe you're not into,
- 3:51maybe they're going to slip some stuff in there for dissent.
- 3:54I don't know. I don't know.
- 3:56Think about it. I want to know what you think
- 3:57about this stuff in the comments on whatever podcast platform
- 4:00you're listening on right now. Also, Rupert Murdoch and
- 4:05Lackland Murdoch are expected to participate in the deal too,
- 4:08likely through Fox Corp rather than individual investors.
- 4:12And we all know how Fox and Trump play well together.
- 4:15Trump confirmed their involvement on Fox News, stating
- 4:18that Rupert and his son are both involved, and Rupert is probably
- 4:24going to be in the group as well.
- 4:26Now the Murdoch's participation could strengthen Fox Corp's
- 4:29digital media presence as traditional broadcasting faces
- 4:33challenges. Think about this.
- 4:36Another arm of Fox News in your feed.
- 4:40Do you want that? Is it time for you to give up
- 4:43TikTok now and move to another platform?
- 4:45Would you move to YouTube Shorts?
- 4:48What platform? Go back to Instagram?
- 4:53I mean, it's up to you, whatever you want to do.
- 4:55But we got Larry Ellison, huge Trump supporter.
- 5:00We got Fox News with Rupert Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch,
- 5:04huge Trump supporters. They're in charge of the
- 5:09algorithm. And if somebody from Fox News is
- 5:12in charge of that there, of course they can go talk to Larry
- 5:16Ellison and say, hey, Larry, I want some more Fox News stuff on
- 5:19everybody's feed. How much do I got to pay you?
- 5:23And of course, we have Michael Dell, founder of Dell
- 5:25Technologies. He's been identified by Trump as
- 5:28part of the investor consortium. Dell's involvement comes through
- 5:31his connection to Silver Lake, which is a private equity firm
- 5:35that has significant investments in Dell Technologies and is
- 5:39serving as a major investor in the TikTok deal.
- 5:42Now, there's also Anderson Horowitz.
- 5:45A16Z represents Trump's most politically active supporters in
- 5:50Silicon Valley. This is, it's just Trump's
- 5:55buddies that are buying TikTok. Of course, I mean, any outside
- 5:59investors, they probably wouldn't have them, right?
- 6:03Anderson Horowitz, Mark Anderson and Ben Horowitz donated $2.5
- 6:07million each to Trump's Super PAC during the 2024 election.
- 6:12Anderson has spent significant time at Mar A Lago and was
- 6:15tapped as an economic advisor to help recruit staff for Elon
- 6:20Musk's Doge. All these people are in it
- 6:23together. No word on Elon though.
- 6:25When he already has X. He doesn't really need another
- 6:28social media platform. It's already doing his thing
- 6:31over there. Silver Lake was one of the
- 6:33world's largest private equity firms, is confirmed as a major
- 6:36investor in the consortium as well.
- 6:38The firm has extensive experience with tech
- 6:41investments, including previous acquisitions of Dell Computer
- 6:44and also Skype. Remember that place?
- 6:48I remember that chat rooms. There's video chat on Skype.
- 6:52Pretty great place, pretty good app.
- 6:54It's gone now. Now we have Microsoft Teams,
- 6:57which is that's a whole other thing.
- 7:00It's a whole episode on its own. Silver Lake's portfolio includes
- 7:03companies like Peloton and Klarna positioning as a key
- 7:07player in the tech investment space.
- 7:10Now there are also current Byte Dance investors, Jeff Yes and
- 7:17Susquehanna International Group. They own approximately 15% of
- 7:20Byte Dance through his firm Susquehanna, making him one of
- 7:24the biggest stakeholders right now.
- 7:25And he donated $16,000,000 to Trump's MAGA Inc Super PAC in
- 7:292025, representing his largest political contributions ever,
- 7:34General Atlantic led by Bill Ford.
- 7:37It's a private equity firm and it holds a substantial stake in
- 7:40Byte Dance and a board seat as well.
- 7:43Firm is actively involved in negotiations to increase their
- 7:45ownership in the new US entity KKR, which is Kohlberg, Kravis
- 7:51and Roberts. It's a private equity giant,
- 7:53holds approximately 1.7% of Byte Dance and is participating in
- 7:58the restructuring to avoid capital gains taxes while
- 8:01maintaining their investments. Now, of course, we have Sequoia
- 8:04Capital, a prominent venture capital firm, has been a Byte
- 8:08Dance investor and is expected to participate in this new
- 8:11structure as well. You know, there was so many
- 8:17other players in this. We're going to, we just touched
- 8:20on a few. Coaching.
- 8:21Management previously led by Philippe Lafont on Byte Dances
- 8:25board has been considering selling portions of its bike
- 8:27dance stake, but remains involved in discussions about
- 8:30the new US entity as well. This is a convergence of Trump's
- 8:35political relationships with major financial interests.
- 8:40I believe Trump is going to bank this.
- 8:44Something's going to happen. People will of course, take
- 8:46their investments from from this investment of TikTok and give it
- 8:54to a super PAC, give it to some of Trump's buddies, give it to
- 8:58somebody who Trump endorses. So the money that they make from
- 9:04this investment, of course they're going to just kind of
- 9:08cycle it through it. It's basically money, money
- 9:11laundering on a gigantic scale, crony money laundering.
- 9:15And I like, listen, I'm not trying to be political here.
- 9:19It's just what it is, OK? Like if you don't, if you don't
- 9:24agree with the way that I'm saying things, I'm going
- 9:27straight down the middle here. If it were anybody else, I would
- 9:30say the same exact thing. I don't care who it is in
- 9:34office. I don't care what side you're
- 9:37on. I just don't care.
- 9:39I am going to tell you how it is you put the pieces together.
- 9:43All these people are all of his cronies, all of his buddies,
- 9:46right? No matter who you are, you got
- 9:48to look at this objectively. It's Trump and a bunch of his
- 9:52billionaire friends trying to buy the media that's in your
- 9:56pocket that you look at all day long on your lunch break before
- 10:01you get your ride, during your ride, when you're just hanging
- 10:04out with your friends or family instead of watching TV, you're
- 10:07on Tiktok because everybody's so interesting and exciting.
- 10:11You're wasting your time on Tiktok and now you're going to
- 10:15be fed a bunch of right wing propaganda through the platform.
- 10:22If it were left wing, I would say it would be left wing
- 10:24propaganda. I'm just here to tell you the
- 10:27truth. Now there are some financial and
- 10:31political implications for this. This is a convergence of Trump's
- 10:35relationships. Jeff.
- 10:36Yes. A $16,000,000 contribution to
- 10:38Trump's campaign coincided with repeated delays of the TikTok
- 10:42ban, raising questions about the political donations and also
- 10:47policy decisions. Similarly, the involvement of
- 10:50Anderson Horowitz reflects the firm's deep integration into
- 10:54Trump's admin, the former A16Z employees staffing key
- 10:59government positions. The transaction creates a unique
- 11:03situation where some of the wealthiest Americans gain
- 11:06control of a media platform that reaches nearly half of the US
- 11:11population, with potential implications for content
- 11:14moderation and algorithmic control that extends beyond
- 11:17traditional business considerations.
- 11:20And under this new ownership structure, Oracle will
- 11:23restructure and secure Tik Tok's algorithm, ensuring that the
- 11:27recommendation system remains under American oversight.
- 11:32They have half of the US population in the palm of their
- 11:38hands. When you have TikTok in your
- 11:41hands, US users will need to download a new app that
- 11:46replicates Tik Tok's functionality but operates
- 11:49entirely on American infrastructure with US
- 11:51controlled algorithms. All user data will be stored on
- 11:55Oracle's cloud servers in Texas, with no access from China.
- 11:59You've got to download a new app.
- 12:01And of course, you're addicted to TikTok.
- 12:04More than likely not you in general, not you particularly,
- 12:07but in general, people are addicted to TikTok.
- 12:11They love it. I, I watch Tik Tok's, it's cool.
- 12:14I watch some of them, they're fun.
- 12:16But when this merger happens, I'm going to keep it and I'm
- 12:20going to see what happens. You know, when they, when they
- 12:23do this buyout, I'm going to see what happens.
- 12:25You have to stay objective with everything in your life, not
- 12:28just TikTok and not just politics.
- 12:32You know, they're going to continue globally.
- 12:34Tik Tok's continuing operating globally, meaning US users can
- 12:36still view content from international creators while
- 12:39their data remains domestically controlled.
- 12:41Bytedance will license its tech to the new entity, but loses
- 12:45operational control over the platform in America.
- 12:51This agreement satisfies the 2024 bipartisan law requiring
- 12:55Byte Dance to divest Tik Tok's US operations or face a
- 13:00nationwide ban. Trump has extended the
- 13:03enforcement deadline to December 16th of 2025, with an additional
- 13:08120 day extension built into the executive order to allow time to
- 13:12finalize all aspects of the transaction.
- 13:17So either late this year or four months after that unless he
- 13:25writes another executive order for 120 day extension.
- 13:30So it could be sometime late spring, summer next year or
- 13:37December 16th right before Christmas, which would be great
- 13:40for some people. You know, they want to get those
- 13:44that algorithm back in US hands. You know, if if they want to do
- 13:51this, and I don't know why they would want to keep this going,
- 13:58this deal going TikTok and bite dance.
- 14:00Why would they do that? They're going to get a bunch of
- 14:02money. Yes, they will lose their
- 14:05platform in America. They could just shut it off.
- 14:11They have all of our data anyway, right?
- 14:14They have all your data. They know exactly what you've
- 14:16looked at a bunch of times. They know all the algorithm
- 14:18stuff, like what makes you tick. They know they've written a
- 14:22profile about you. They know everything about you.
- 14:25So what they could do at this point, because they have all
- 14:29half of America's data, they could just shut it down if they
- 14:32wanted to. And it.
- 14:34The deal requires final approval from Chinese authorities, though
- 14:37Trump administration officials express confidence that China
- 14:40has consented to the agreement following discussions between
- 14:43Trump and Xi Jinping. The framework was negotiated
- 14:48through talks in Madrid between US and Chinese representatives,
- 14:51with Treasurer Secretary Scott Besent leading the American
- 14:55delegation. This represents one of the
- 14:59largest tech acquisitions in recent years, between 50 and
- 15:04$100 billion, depending on whether it includes Tik Tok's
- 15:08proprietary algorithm. It's not going to Tik Tok's not
- 15:12going to give that away. So they're going to take a
- 15:15lower, lower payment, keep the algorithm.
- 15:21But yeah, between 50 and $100 billion, a lot of money.
- 15:25The deal not only resolves immediate national security
- 15:29concerns, but also establishes a new model for foreign technology
- 15:33platforms operating in the United States under American
- 15:37oversight and control. I want to know what you think.
- 15:41Do you think it's OK for every person to be involved with this,
- 15:45to be a good buddies with the president?
- 15:51It doesn't matter what president it is but or who these people
- 15:53are. But the most powerful people in
- 15:57America, the most wealthy people in America.
- 16:00This is how it always been though.
- 16:01Look at look at history. The powerful people, they
- 16:05control the media. They always have.
- 16:07Tiktok is the media now. Nobody reads newspapers.
- 16:10What is a newspaper? Nobody watches TV.
- 16:13The only the only thing people watch TV for is for live sports.
- 16:20And all the live sports are moving to streaming anyway.
- 16:23Nobody does that. So half of the US population use
- 16:26Tiktok. This is the media now.
- 16:30Tiktok is the media. How easy is it to make a million
- 16:3415 second propaganda videos and send them out to everybody?
- 16:42How easy is it for them to do that?
- 16:45It's so easy. You can do that so easy and you
- 16:48can do it. You know, there's so many AI
- 16:52opportunities there. They can make incredible,
- 16:58incredible Hollywood movie style AI created 15 second 22nd 32nd
- 17:08tik toks and feed them to everybody.
- 17:13I don't care what side you're on.
- 17:15I really don't like that I don't care just be nice.
- 17:17That's it just be a nice person don't be a jerk, but it is
- 17:21weird. Let me know in the comments on
- 17:24your TikTok. Oh I mean your podcast player.
- 17:29Let me know what you think because I want to hear from you.
- 17:32This is a really wild time we're in right now.
