- 2:06Speaker 9: of Halloween. This town of Halloween.
- 2:11Speaker 1: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I am Brian
- 2:14Speaker 1: and joining me again this week is.
- 2:15Speaker 10: It's.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Me.
- 2:19Speaker 1: You're just me. An episode in and you've just become me.
- 2:23Speaker 2: It's Nora from the mental illness episode.
- 2:26Speaker 1: The mental illness girl. Can we just call you that now?
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yeah, that's my official title.
- 2:30Speaker 1: That's gonna stick.
- 2:32Speaker 2: I'm here.
- 2:33Speaker 4: I'm back.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Anyone who knows her knows it's pretty accurate actually. So,
- 2:36Speaker 1: happy Halloween. Happy Halloween.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Happy almost Halloween.
- 2:40Speaker 1: You've joined into, well, I take over the entire month
- 2:43Speaker 1: of October, basically. And I'm like, how many? It started
- 2:46Speaker 1: as like one specific Halloween episode. And now we're, myself especially,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and everyone I know is kind of a horror dork.
- 2:54Speaker 1: So it's just kind of how much Halloween can I
- 2:58Speaker 1: cram into a month?
- 2:59Speaker 2: We only get a 12th of the year.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Except not really, because I'll still be talking about horror
- 3:05Speaker 1: movies in December. Let's talk about, let's see, what were
- 3:11Speaker 1: we going to talk about this year?
- 3:12Speaker 2: A Santa Claus movie.
- 3:15Speaker 1: It wasn't Silent Night, Deadly Night. We had another one
- 3:17Speaker 1: we just pitched.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Krampus.
- 3:19Speaker 1: We already did Krampus. Once again, horror is 12 months
- 3:24Speaker 1: a year for me, but it's extra special when it's
- 3:28Speaker 1: Halloween times. And one of the things that usually comes
- 3:32Speaker 1: with these Halloween episodes, and I was reminded because Misty
- 3:36Speaker 1: called me out for not giving her any, was in
- 3:38Speaker 1: the past I would always set up the Halloween episodes
- 3:42Speaker 1: involving candy.
- 3:44Speaker 9: Oh, my God.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Oh, yes. Came with a bag of candy.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Reese's Cups. I was out today looking for more skeleton
- 3:53Speaker 1: things that I need to buy because it's the time
- 3:55Speaker 1: that I stock up. And I saw Reese cups and
- 3:58Speaker 1: I'm like, I haven't had Reese cups in a while.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And I, it was a problem for quite a run there.
- 4:05Speaker 1: It was Jonesy. Anyway, but yeah, the, these have some
- 4:09Speaker 1: sort of cookie crumbs involved. I don't know. It's a
- 4:13Speaker 1: special variation. I was like, well, I have to try
- 4:15Speaker 1: those and it's Halloween. That's my excuse for buying more candy.
- 4:20Speaker 7: Right.
- 4:21Speaker 1: So, and while I was doing that, I thought, If
- 4:26Speaker 1: you've been listening, you've heard me pitching these pumpkin spice
- 4:29Speaker 1: Twinkies that I am so thrilled with. So if you need,
- 4:33Speaker 1: I brought those too.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Is that an actual pumpkin spice Twinkie?
- 4:36Speaker 1: That one is, yes.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Can I eat it right now?
- 4:38Speaker 1: Go for it.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I'm going to lean away from the microphone.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Certainly not the first person eating on this show. This
- 4:47Speaker 1: is exciting.
- 4:48Speaker 2: It actually feels like fall today.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I feel like the cake is kind of normal, but
- 4:53Speaker 1: the insides is very pumpkin-y.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Weird.
- 4:59Speaker 1: That's what we're going for on this episode. Weird.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Weird, but I'm into it. It's still a Twinkie.
- 5:08Speaker 1: There you go, Hostess. Send the check over right now.
- 5:11Speaker 1: There's your plug. All right, so now that we've got
- 5:16Speaker 1: Twinkies in us and we're loading up on Reesey Cups,
- 5:19Speaker 1: let's get rolling. And normally we'll intro in and we'll
- 5:24Speaker 1: yammer on about, you know, some nonsense we've watched lately.
- 5:27Speaker 1: But in the recent weeks, I've been doing more of
- 5:32Speaker 1: a sort of horror intro and Halloween tie-ins. So we
- 5:37Speaker 1: can go with both. And one you were already excited
- 5:41Speaker 1: about when I was pitching the, like, Because again, like
- 5:46Speaker 1: two episodes ago, we went into a, if you were
- 5:48Speaker 1: going to make a horror movie, what horror movie would
- 5:51Speaker 1: you make? And then I hear you've got an answer
- 5:53Speaker 1: for this, which before you burn it, let me just say,
- 5:57Speaker 1: I don't know why we keep spilling these out to
- 5:59Speaker 1: the world and we're not just writing them so we
- 6:01Speaker 1: can sell these things. So if we all need to
- 6:05Speaker 1: start working on these screenplays, let's do that as well.
- 6:08Speaker 1: But if you want to put it out there for
- 6:10Speaker 1: people to steal your idea, what horror movie would you make?
- 6:13Speaker 10: Okay.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Mine is Skinwalkers or Wendigos. That would be my horror monster.
- 6:21Speaker 1: And how does this work?
- 6:23Speaker 2: So for those of you at home who aren't well-versed
- 6:26Speaker 2: in Navajo folklore... You need more Twinkie. wendigos or skinwalkers
- 6:36Speaker 2: are basically there's like good shamans and bad shamans so
- 6:40Speaker 2: you learn the good magic and healing or the bad
- 6:43Speaker 2: and the ones that go bad become skinwalkers and basically
- 6:48Speaker 2: they can like convert into dogs or coyotes traditionally and
- 6:52Speaker 2: kind of like act like these creatures but then really
- 6:56Speaker 2: it's this evil thing and then like they never talk
- 6:59Speaker 2: about it apparently because if you talk about it they'll
- 7:02Speaker 2: come to you and so now I'm I'm ready for it.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Come at me, skinwalkers.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Seeing a nice little thing, inspired scene here of some
- 7:11Speaker 1: creature busting out of a dog.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Yeah. Or Doug Jones, if we're on his topic.
- 7:19Speaker 1: See, what's sad is I was trying not, I've realized
- 7:22Speaker 1: lately I work Doug Jones into almost every episode.
- 7:24Speaker 2: That's because he's perfect.
- 7:25Speaker 1: But you were describing this, what I'm assuming is a creepy, skinny,
- 7:29Speaker 1: tall creature. I was just like, I wonder who we
- 7:32Speaker 1: could cast for that. As we're writing this movie, we've
- 7:36Speaker 1: already got the inside track on casting. We just got
- 7:41Speaker 1: to get money. Doug ain't going to do this for free.
- 7:42Speaker 1: You guys start sending in money now because we got
- 7:45Speaker 1: to give Doug some money.
- 7:47Speaker 2: I want to meet him. Doug, if you're listening, I'm
- 7:50Speaker 2: your biggest fan.
- 7:50Speaker 1: We'll see what we can do. I keep making it.
- 7:53Speaker 1: It kind of goes both ways now. I keep making
- 7:55Speaker 1: him sit down with us, and then he keeps making
- 7:57Speaker 1: me watch horrible rom-coms. It's a give-take sort of a
- 8:01Speaker 1: thing we have.
- 8:02Speaker 7: Exactly.
- 8:03Speaker 2: But one of those, it was either Masters of Horror
- 8:06Speaker 2: or Fear Itself, and I can't remember. I think it
- 8:08Speaker 2: might have been Fear Itself, that show that was the
- 8:11Speaker 2: hour-long anthology show. But one of them was called Skin
- 8:16Speaker 2: and Bones, and it's about a skinwalker, and Doug Jones
- 8:19Speaker 2: is in it.
- 8:19Speaker 1: That's the one. I was trying to think.
- 8:21Speaker 2: He's the main dude.
- 8:22Speaker 1: I feel like, not to mess up your deal, but
- 8:24Speaker 1: I feel like they've done something.
- 8:27Speaker 2: At least in that show.
- 8:27Speaker 1: That was one of them, but I feel like there's
- 8:29Speaker 1: also like a bad straight to DVD kind of.
- 8:32Speaker 2: A horror movie. No, I want a good one.
- 8:35Speaker 1: But you want a well-budgeted. We are in trouble then
- 8:37Speaker 1: because we're really going to have to get money.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Yes, we got to get historical. We got to do
- 8:41Speaker 2: a period piece. I want frontiersmen out there, nothing around, lanterns, fires.
- 8:49Speaker 1: You want old-timey horror.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Kettles. Yes. Then all of a sudden, boom, bam, Doug Jones, Skinwalker.
- 8:57Speaker 2: That's my proposal.
- 9:00Speaker 1: That's your pitch?
- 9:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not bad.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Send your money now and we can put this together.
- 9:06Speaker 1: It could be really good. I'm trying to think what
- 9:09Speaker 1: I was just going to give you a recommendation. I
- 9:11Speaker 1: have to think of the title now because I talked
- 9:13Speaker 1: to the director. But it's been so many years ago now.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I'm like, wait, what was the name of that movie?
- 9:21Speaker 2: A Skinwalker movie?
- 9:23Speaker 1: No, but it's Frontiers-y. It's sort of old time... It's
- 9:28Speaker 1: kind of like, Pioneer reminded me, it's almost more of
- 9:32Speaker 1: edging into Pioneer Old West times.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Oh, Bone Tomahawk?
- 9:37Speaker 1: No, but that's awesome. If you haven't seen that at home,
- 9:40Speaker 1: watch it right now. It's awesome. Yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 2: I'm into the historical horror movies because things were so
- 9:48Speaker 2: much creepier back then anyway, whether it be werewolves or cholera.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Something always around the corner. Either is going to take
- 9:57Speaker 1: out your child.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I was discussing that yesterday, actually. We were talking about
- 10:03Speaker 1: old-timey people and families and the fact that it's like...
- 10:06Speaker 1: Everyone died. Well, I mean, here's Jenny. She's one of
- 10:10Speaker 1: 14 children. I'm like, it occurred to me at some
- 10:12Speaker 1: point they had 14 children because you lost at least
- 10:15Speaker 1: half of them.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 10:17Speaker 1: To something.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:19Speaker 1: The consumption or run over by a train or I
- 10:22Speaker 1: don't know. They all had some god awful thing that
- 10:25Speaker 1: happened to them. Yellow fever.
- 10:26Speaker 2: I don't know what that is. But that was tuberculosis, obviously.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Everything seems like it comes back to tuberculosis.
- 10:34Speaker 2: It all comes back to tuberculosis.
- 10:35Speaker 1: It's always like some sort of horrible other term for tuberculosis. Please, people,
- 10:42Speaker 1: fight tuberculosis is what we're saying.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Please donate.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Like a tuberculosis telethon. Did you know?
- 10:54Speaker 2: Well, speaking of historical horror movies, and I know this
- 10:57Speaker 2: isn't what we're going to talk about, but I still
- 10:58Speaker 2: want to talk to you about it anyway.
- 11:00Speaker 4: All right.
- 11:01Speaker 2: It's The Witch.
- 11:02Speaker 7: The Vavitch?
- 11:03Speaker 2: The Vavitch.
- 11:05Speaker 1: They spell it with two Vs. I'm saying it with
- 11:08Speaker 1: two Vs.
- 11:08Speaker 9: They do, yeah.
- 11:08Speaker 1: It's your own fault, people.
- 11:10Speaker 2: You can Google it either way.
- 11:11Speaker 1: You made a fine movie, but you need to work
- 11:14Speaker 1: on your spelling.
- 11:14Speaker 2: They went real authentic with that old English.
- 11:17Speaker 7: Vavitch.
- 11:18Speaker 2: I watched the whole thing with subtitles. I could not
- 11:21Speaker 2: understand it if I didn't.
- 11:22Speaker 1: That's my usual thing for people is just like, no,
- 11:27Speaker 1: it's good, but it's of its time. If you're not comfortable,
- 11:32Speaker 1: if you're expecting a modern horror movie or even like
- 11:36Speaker 1: a modernized feel of a horror movie set back then,
- 11:40Speaker 1: because they still kind of do that sometimes. There's ones
- 11:42Speaker 1: that are set in the olden days, but they still
- 11:45Speaker 1: feel like a relatively modern... This is not that. This is.
- 11:48Speaker 2: They are legit.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Immersed in its time period.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Yes, it's so good.
- 11:55Speaker 1: So, what were your thoughts on it?
- 11:57Speaker 2: I loved it. I liked that it was so weirdly
- 12:02Speaker 2: in the 1600s. Because again, like, All that stuff back
- 12:06Speaker 2: then was so creepy.
- 12:09Speaker 1: I mean, everything about it was creepy and disturbing.
- 12:11Speaker 2: You just get banished to the middle of the woods
- 12:13Speaker 2: and it's like, that's that, good luck. Fight off the wolves.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Let alone the witch in the forest, who also, that
- 12:21Speaker 2: was cool, was that there was an actual witch and
- 12:24Speaker 2: it wasn't just like weird family paranoia. It's like, nope, look,
- 12:28Speaker 2: here she is.
- 12:28Speaker 1: But kind of a little of that too.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I mean, definitely that, but then it was like, no.
- 12:33Speaker 2: And also, Black Phillip, that Guy's voice.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Black Phillip is the coolest thing about it. That was
- 12:38Speaker 1: the coolest scene. Overall, it's cool, but Black Phillip is
- 12:41Speaker 1: pretty badass.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Oh, my God, that scene. It's all just candlelight, and
- 12:45Speaker 2: then you can see half of his face behind her.
- 12:48Speaker 2: It was so cool.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Look, I also feel bad for not all of them,
- 12:56Speaker 1: the whole family, but her brother. Oh, yeah, Caleb. Sweet Caleb.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Not so much the horrible things that happened to him later,
- 13:04Speaker 1: but just at the beginning, I mean, he's kind of
- 13:09Speaker 1: looking at his sister. You know what? It's not his fault.
- 13:12Speaker 1: I'm blaming the parents.
- 13:13Speaker 2: You took him away.
- 13:15Speaker 1: The kid's like 13.
- 13:16Speaker 2: What do you.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Think he's going to do? The fact that you took
- 13:20Speaker 1: him away from town and every other girl in the
- 13:23Speaker 1: world is like, well, it's not his fault. You parents
- 13:26Speaker 1: are terrible parents. I hate you all.
- 13:28Speaker 2: They were not the best.
- 13:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:30Speaker 1: No wonder they all got killed.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Also, wasn't that mom the same woman in Game of Thrones?
- 13:36Speaker 2: The creepy one who breastfed her 12-year-old son.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Is that unusual? I don't know. Anyway, I'm not a
- 13:43Speaker 1: huge Game of Thrones.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Okay.
- 13:45Speaker 1: I'm the one person.
- 13:46Speaker 2: That mom is the same person in Game of Thrones.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Which is not surprising.
- 13:49Speaker 2: She is Lady Catelyn's sister. For those of you listening
- 13:52Speaker 2: at home, it's that lady. And she is just as
- 13:55Speaker 2: creepy in this movie as she is in Game of Thrones.
- 13:58Speaker 1: The Burrowers. I was trying to think of what it is.
- 14:01Speaker 2: The Burrowers.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Look for the... It's very... In 2008, The Burrowers... very
- 14:07Speaker 1: underrated little horror movie and set back in the day
- 14:12Speaker 1: so I think you should yeah that was my while
- 14:15Speaker 1: we're throwing out you know watch the bitch and then
- 14:19Speaker 1: the burrowers which we've also many many years ago done
- 14:22Speaker 1: an episode on so let's see what else are we
- 14:26Speaker 1: gonna throw out there oh yeah the other one I've
- 14:29Speaker 1: asked certainly in the past then to last week so
- 14:33Speaker 1: do you remember your experience Exposure to... This was fun
- 14:38Speaker 1: last time, so I wanted to see what yours was.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Either or, or both. Either just horrific in general, like
- 14:46Speaker 1: what made you want to go down and attach yourself
- 14:49Speaker 1: to horror as a theme, or specifically the first horror
- 14:53Speaker 1: movie that made an impact on you.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Oh, because there's been a few. My stepmom is super
- 15:01Speaker 2: into horror movies, and especially Stephen King horror movies.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Of which there were many. And now we're starting to
- 15:08Speaker 1: get a lot of stuff again.
- 15:09Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 15:09Speaker 1: It's a weird comeback.
- 15:10Speaker 2: They took a rest and they're coming back.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Yeah. For 10 or 15 years, we didn't have hardly anything.
- 15:15Speaker 1: And now every week, there's another new Stephen King property.
- 15:18Speaker 2: It's all over the place. So The Shining was the
- 15:21Speaker 2: one that I watched with her and could not sleep.
- 15:23Speaker 1: The Kubrick version or the miniseries?
- 15:26Speaker 2: Not the miniseries.
- 15:28Speaker 1: I like, you know, Brian from Wings is really cool,
- 15:31Speaker 1: so it's fine.
- 15:32Speaker 2: I watched that with her when I was like 13.
- 15:36Speaker 2: I remember The Lady in the Bathtub.
- 15:38Speaker 1: I'm still scarred by The Lady in the Bathtub.
- 15:41Speaker 2: The arms. That fucked me up. Messed me up. I'm sorry.
- 15:47Speaker 10: Please.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Connect.
- 15:49Speaker 1: As much as possible, actually. Yeah, I mean, certain other
- 15:53Speaker 1: cast members get their own rating. They like make up
- 15:56Speaker 1: new words at this point.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Is it Doug Jones?
- 15:58Speaker 1: No, but... That dirty... I was trying to say, if
- 16:01Speaker 1: anybody's on the clean side, it's probably Doug Jones. Misty,
- 16:07Speaker 1: on the other hand, is a foul-mouthed sailor girl.
- 16:11Speaker 2: That one, and then Pet Sematary, especially Zelda. Zelda still
- 16:16Speaker 2: terrifies me to this day. I cannot watch that scene
- 16:19Speaker 2: with her.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Is that the scene you think of? Because everyone I know,
- 16:24Speaker 1: anytime they mention Pet Sematary, they barely have... Okay, you
- 16:28Speaker 1: just did it. You just did the motion. You guys
- 16:30Speaker 1: missed it at home. There's a slicing motion with her hand.
- 16:34Speaker 1: People barely get the name of the movie out. I
- 16:37Speaker 1: think that sliced Achilles... ruined people for generations yeah like
- 16:42Speaker 1: it's the one thing that stuck with people in that
- 16:45Speaker 1: movie like they're like i don't know there's some like
- 16:46Speaker 1: cats and there's a weird little boy and oh my
- 16:49Speaker 1: god the achilles like it it was bad there's i mean.
- 16:53Speaker 2: But not as bad as zelda oh my god in
- 16:55Speaker 2: that room and when she comes towards the camera and
- 16:59Speaker 2: the lens is like enlarging her face and she's all
- 17:02Speaker 2: like rachel like that is Horfoyd Gwynn. That's the scariest.
- 17:08Speaker 2: She's the worst. And they're going to remake that one.
- 17:10Speaker 2: I just saw a trailer for it.
- 17:12Speaker 1: So they've already got the trailer going?
- 17:14Speaker 4: Yes.
- 17:15Speaker 1: It's like shot and everything.
- 17:15Speaker 2: And I think John Lithgow is the old dude.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Is Fred Gwynn.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Is the Herman Munster of this story.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Yeah. He's in it.
- 17:23Speaker 1: I mean, you kind of can't go wrong with John Lithgow.
- 17:26Speaker 2: It looks freaky, but I'm scared to see it because
- 17:28Speaker 2: I don't want to see their interpretation of the Zelda
- 17:30Speaker 2: because the one in the 80s was bad enough.
- 17:32Speaker 1: We've got other weird ladies. We can find some other creepy,
- 17:37Speaker 1: weird looking lady.
- 17:38Speaker 2: No, it was a man. The actor was a man.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. It's been a long time since I've seen this.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Doug Jones. Doug Jones could play Zelda.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Are you like his manager or his agent or something? Yes. Recently,
- 17:51Speaker 1: I was hired. Doug, let's hook this up.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Doug Jones.
- 17:53Speaker 1: She can get you work, it sounds like. Yeah. I
- 17:56Speaker 1: guess I'm going to have to rewatch it and figure
- 17:58Speaker 1: out who this Zelda character is. Because I really, like again,
- 18:01Speaker 1: all I remember is the Achilles and- Fred Gwynn with
- 18:04Speaker 1: his horrified face, and I think Denise Crosby's in it.
- 18:09Speaker 1: I don't know. I have video box memories of most things.
- 18:13Speaker 1: I'm just like, I remember the cast. I remember the premise.
- 18:16Speaker 2: You don't remember Velda?
- 18:18Speaker 1: Not really. That tells you how long it's been.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Oh, man, dude.
- 18:22Speaker 1: It's been a long, long time.
- 18:24Speaker 2: The mom's sister, she kept having flashbacks. No?
- 18:27Speaker 6: I did.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 18:28Speaker 1: There was a cat.
- 18:29Speaker 2: We got something to watch later.
- 18:31Speaker 1: All right. We'll put it on the list.
- 18:33Speaker 2: It's the scariest.
- 18:34Speaker 1: It's an ongoing thing. So, any horror in the real
- 18:43Speaker 1: world that led you down there?
- 18:45Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Or better yet, if you don't want to go into
- 18:48Speaker 1: your mental trauma, which we've already covered a little of,
- 18:52Speaker 1: what is your.
- 18:55Speaker 1: This was fun last time, too. What were some of
- 18:56Speaker 1: your favorite costumes for Halloween?
- 19:00Speaker 2: Oh, I don't even... I'm trying to think of if
- 19:03Speaker 2: I even ever had any good ones.
- 19:06Speaker 1: What kind of lame childhood is this with no costumes?
- 19:09Speaker 2: It's like Disney things. Most of the time, I would
- 19:13Speaker 2: just forget about it and go as a black cat
- 19:17Speaker 2: and just wear black clothes. More recently, my niece... When
- 19:23Speaker 2: she was really little, she loved Disney movies, and she
- 19:27Speaker 2: told me I looked like Snow White, so I have
- 19:28Speaker 2: a Snow White costume that I would wear to hand
- 19:31Speaker 2: out candy to trick-or-treaters.
- 19:32Speaker 1: That I would wear. Yeah, I'm wearing that. I'm kind
- 19:34Speaker 1: of late. May or may not ever.
- 19:37Speaker 2: But in terms of literary stuff, I was always real
- 19:42Speaker 2: into Edgar Allan Poe. I loved his stories.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I don't know how to read, but I'm always attracted
- 19:49Speaker 1: to Edgar Allan Poe.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe and like Flannery O'Connor get
- 19:53Speaker 2: some southern gothic going on in there I love that love.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Her yeah Edgar Allan Poe again I think just as
- 20:02Speaker 1: the character he was and the weird stuff that he
- 20:08Speaker 1: like got into that Nobody was doing it that time. Again,
- 20:12Speaker 1: one of those people way ahead of the curve. Yes.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Creating genres at that point. Yeah, he's a fascinating guy.
- 20:20Speaker 2: If you read The Fall of the House of Usher.
- 20:23Speaker 1: I've watched a movie.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Oh, well, yeah. If you read it or watch it.
- 20:27Speaker 2: That is terrifying. That is a creepy story.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Again, we- I had, because I don't really bother to
- 20:34Speaker 1: read it, but the fact that we watched and did
- 20:38Speaker 1: a live showing of one of the early silent films
- 20:41Speaker 1: that decided to try to do a version of it.
- 20:44Speaker 1: And I don't think I'd realized how much of what's
- 20:49Speaker 1: going on there is mental. Yes. Because you assume with
- 20:53Speaker 1: most of these, there's some sort of supernatural forces that
- 20:55Speaker 1: come in. But the more you get into this, you're like,
- 20:58Speaker 1: you find out how to tie back to the mental
- 21:01Speaker 1: trauma and mental damage and weird things going on in
- 21:04Speaker 1: your head. I mean, there's so much of that that
- 21:06Speaker 1: is like years later, kind of scientifically proven to be
- 21:11Speaker 1: a real thing. And this guy that is hearing things
- 21:15Speaker 1: in there is actually a specific like ailment that at
- 21:21Speaker 1: that point they just thought you were crazy and they
- 21:23Speaker 1: probably would have locked you away. But yeah, this was
- 21:26Speaker 1: like a real medical issue. And, hearing voices is like
- 21:30Speaker 1: one of those you know sometimes it's just weird stuff
- 21:33Speaker 1: bouncing around in your brain for a day and a
- 21:34Speaker 1: half and it is something someone said but you're hearing
- 21:37Speaker 1: it way later and again these are all actual medical
- 21:40Speaker 1: issues that they just came out as you know crazy
- 21:44Speaker 1: people that needed to be well they need to have
- 21:47Speaker 1: a house fall down on them so yeah i i
- 21:51Speaker 1: I think that was the most fascinating thing is the
- 21:53Speaker 1: more we got into that one, the more I'm like,
- 21:55Speaker 1: it's not really ghosting goblins. It's all real world stuff.
- 21:59Speaker 1: It's just people being weird. Yeah, people with.
- 22:02Speaker 2: And their weird issues.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Or superpowers, really. I was like, that hearing, I mean,
- 22:07Speaker 1: you can be on the new X-Men.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Speaking of which.
- 22:10Speaker 1: It's a special power.
- 22:11Speaker 2: I also thought of you when I saw this, the
- 22:14Speaker 2: trailer for that Glass movie.
- 22:17Speaker 4: Oh, Lord.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Have you seen that?
- 22:18Speaker 1: I still haven't watched the trailer yet. I think I
- 22:20Speaker 1: heard it was out, but all right. Are they bringing
- 22:25Speaker 1: in the other? How much crossover characters are we getting here?
- 22:29Speaker 2: It's Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, and James McAvoy.
- 22:33Speaker 1: See, the McAvoy, I wasn't sure how much they were
- 22:35Speaker 1: going to tie him into.
- 22:36Speaker 2: No, he's like, I think he's like the main muscle
- 22:39Speaker 2: at least because they show him in his Beast personality.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Glass can't do much, actually. As muscle goes. Glass is
- 22:47Speaker 1: kind of a problem.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Yeah, but I saw the trailer and I was like, dang,
- 22:51Speaker 2: I would go see that. And I'm not into superhero stuff,
- 22:54Speaker 2: but they're like super villains. They're going to do some
- 22:57Speaker 2: bad things. But it looked good.
- 23:00Speaker 1: They didn't go with Unbreakable 2. Now it's just Glass.
- 23:05Speaker 1: The handful of people that remember that character enough to
- 23:09Speaker 1: tie them.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Together yeah also like M. Night Shyamalan come on what
- 23:13Speaker 2: have you been up to what are you doing this
- 23:16Speaker 2: I guess.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Have you seen those other ones in between exactly there's
- 23:19Speaker 1: a reason nobody wanted to get on board with him.
- 23:22Speaker 2: For decades yeah I mean poor guy I mean he's
- 23:26Speaker 2: clearly smart He'll do a good job.
- 23:28Speaker 1: And talented. He was a really good filmmaker, and he
- 23:31Speaker 1: just bought into his own weird thing, and then no
- 23:34Speaker 1: one would give him a break anymore. Once he became
- 23:37Speaker 1: a punchline, which literally, we've talked about that before, when
- 23:41Speaker 1: they did that one that was the elevator movie. Oh, devil. Yeah,
- 23:46Speaker 1: it's not even his movie. He's just producer. He may
- 23:48Speaker 1: have written the story or something, but he's not even
- 23:51Speaker 1: director on that. But they, the studio, decided it's important
- 23:55Speaker 1: to use him to sell it. So they slapped his
- 23:57Speaker 1: name on it. And I remember seeing it in that
- 24:00Speaker 1: trailer in the theater. An entire group of people. And
- 24:02Speaker 1: they're watching. And it looks pretty decent. And there's creepy
- 24:05Speaker 1: elements going on. And everybody's on board. And then it
- 24:09Speaker 1: throws up the M. Night Shyamalan. And everybody just snickered.
- 24:14Speaker 1: And I'm just like, oh, your career. So it's nice
- 24:19Speaker 1: to see him kind of getting a little... A little comeback,
- 24:23Speaker 1: like a little footing to sort of climb back up there.
- 24:25Speaker 1: I don't know if he can make up for a
- 24:28Speaker 1: few of those in between.
- 24:30Speaker 2: But he's going to try.
- 24:31Speaker 1: He's trying, damn it. All right. I know you're geared
- 24:37Speaker 1: up to discuss this movie, so let's take our break now.
- 24:41Speaker 1: And when we come back, we will get into this
- 24:44Speaker 1: week's movie.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Beep, beep, beep. I need some candy.

- 26:25Speaker 10: That makes me think of a particular coffee shop in

- 28:40Speaker 7: Now, they want yours.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Tourist trap.
- 28:43Speaker 4: From Compass International.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Rated PG.
- 28:45Speaker 11: It's a night of spooky surprises.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Oh, Halloween. For America's favorite fat cat. Don't bat your eyes.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Garfield's Halloween Adventure will have you shaking in your boots Monday.
- 28:58Speaker 9: So....
- 29:14Speaker 1: You guys know we're broke, right?
- 29:16Speaker 2: We're always broke. I know.
- 29:18Speaker 1: And yet we're trying to put this show together. Now
- 29:21Speaker 1: how the hell can we keep the show rolling if
- 29:24Speaker 1: we're broke and we can't do this?
- 29:26Speaker 2: Sell special fiddle fowl.
- 29:30Speaker 4: Oh.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Or instead... Murder people? Are you just taking random money
- 29:35Speaker 1: out of their pockets?
- 29:36Speaker 4: Well, yeah.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Hopefully it will... come to that if some people will
- 29:42Speaker 1: get on board with this.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Get on board with what?
- 29:46Speaker 1: The new Movie Meltdown Patreon page. And what is this?
- 29:50Speaker 1: If you go there, you can sponsor the show itself. Basically,
- 29:54Speaker 1: you just join the club. You join the Meltdown Club.
- 29:56Speaker 1: You become a milketeer.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Do you get a special decoder ring?
- 30:00Speaker 1: We already sent those out, but those people, nobody cares.
- 30:02Speaker 1: I didn't get a decoder ring. You're not part of
- 30:04Speaker 1: the club. I'm never part of the club. You're part
- 30:07Speaker 1: of the secret circle, though. It's okay. But if you
- 30:10Speaker 1: become a milketeer, you can get special episodes that only
- 30:14Speaker 1: come to you. I think you should do it right now.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Right now?
- 30:18Speaker 1: I'm just saying. It's maybe a couple of bucks. There's
- 30:21Speaker 1: other levels you can kick in and get fancier. Maybe
- 30:24Speaker 1: a couple bucks. You don't know. Fancier stuff. But really,
- 30:26Speaker 1: just a couple of bucks will keep things rolling. What'll
- 30:29Speaker 1: get me a pony? That's a really high level. I'll
- 30:35Speaker 1: have to figure out exactly what. That's platinum membership right there.
- 30:38Speaker 1: It might be above platinum. We'll have to see. What
- 30:41Speaker 1: is above platinum? Titanium. Titanium.
- 30:45Speaker 4: Really?
- 30:47Speaker 1: Maybe that's a step below.
- 30:48Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 30:48Speaker 1: We'll have to see. Aluminium level. That's way below.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Not if you say it fancy.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Yeah. Unobtainium.
- 30:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Good luck with that. But for the rest of you,
- 31:02Speaker 1: go kick in a couple bucks. Keep the show rolling.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Go to patreon.com slash movie meltdown. And if you don't
- 31:08Speaker 1: know how to type all that in, go to the
- 31:09Speaker 1: movie meltdown.com page. And the link's right there. And you
- 31:13Speaker 1: can save this show.
- 31:15Speaker 2: And help me get a pony.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Damn them, man. Save the meltdown. Get Missy a pony.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Yeah, priorities.
- 31:36Speaker 6: Hey, this is Doug Jones from the Hellboy movies and
- 31:39Speaker 6: the Silver Surfer and Pan's Labyrinth and Hocus Pocus, Falling
- 31:42Speaker 6: Skies and so much more. But today you are listening
- 31:46Speaker 6: to Movie Meltdown.
- 31:49Speaker 9: It's time for Sofa Theater.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Nice. Hey, give me a smile.
- 31:57Speaker 9: Gino, are you sure we're going the right way?
- 32:00Speaker 2: I've never been lost in my life.
- 32:01Speaker 9: There's only one way out of this chamber, and that's
- 32:08Speaker 9: down the pipe. I'm stuck. I can't breathe. Okay, Sarah,
- 32:21Speaker 9: you have to calm down. I'm coming.
- 32:23Speaker 2: I'm coming back.
- 32:24Speaker 4: Okay?
- 32:25Speaker 1: Okay.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Okay, move.
- 32:31Speaker 9: Now! Now! This is not good, guys.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Can we get out of here?
- 32:37Speaker 9: Which way?
- 32:37Speaker 10: I don't know.
- 32:45Speaker 9: She saw someone back.
- 32:46Speaker 2: So well, I don't think I saw someone I saw.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Someone No, you've heard something and you saw what you
- 32:52Speaker 1: wanted to see the dark it plays tricks on Please.
- 33:34Speaker 10: There we go.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Way down deep in the darkest hole. Lost my way.
- 33:54Speaker 3: Lost my soul. You can dig my grave.
- 33:58Speaker 1: You can dig me a hole.
- 34:00Speaker 9: In this mammoth cave. Mammoth cave.
- 34:04Speaker 10: Are you okay?
- 34:06Speaker 2: I'm just looking at my notes. These are all from
- 34:15Speaker 2: the beginning before the cave creatures even show up And
- 34:18Speaker 2: I'm like, scene of Holly shimmying through a very narrow passage.
- 34:22Speaker 2: I hate this. Oh, God, now everybody's doing it. They
- 34:26Speaker 2: didn't even need cave creatures in this movie. I hate this.
- 34:29Speaker 1: Okay. You're jumping to my point? All right. Then that
- 34:33Speaker 1: means we should get into this. So we are obviously
- 34:36Speaker 1: back and cannot control ourselves to talk about this week's
- 34:40Speaker 1: Sofa Theater feature, which... Again, we were coming into a
- 34:44Speaker 1: Halloween kind of a thing, and I'm like, okay, let's
- 34:48Speaker 1: pick a horror movie. And you threw out a whole
- 34:51Speaker 1: bunch of them you were going to be watching. I
- 34:53Speaker 1: was like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Is The Descent on
- 34:55Speaker 1: that list? Because I am all about The Descent, and
- 34:58Speaker 1: I haven't watched it in a while. So this seems
- 35:00Speaker 1: like a good time to discuss what is easily a
- 35:03Speaker 1: horror movie, and then midway in becomes an entirely different
- 35:07Speaker 1: horror movie, The Descent.
- 35:09Speaker 4: So.
- 35:10Speaker 1: This week's Silver Theater feature is The Descent, the year
- 35:14Speaker 1: is 2005. The director is Neil Marshall, which I won't
- 35:19Speaker 1: go into. And the plot, according to IMDb, and we'll
- 35:24Speaker 1: throw the spoiler alert out a little early because they
- 35:27Speaker 1: already jumped to it. A caving expedition goes horribly wrong
- 35:31Speaker 1: as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a
- 35:35Speaker 1: strange breed of predators. Ooh. Double spoiler alert because we're
- 35:41Speaker 1: definitely going to go into all of this and the
- 35:45Speaker 1: ending and other endings and all kinds of details. So
- 35:49Speaker 1: go watch it now. You should have already seen it.
- 35:52Speaker 1: What is wrong with you? So first off, I want
- 35:55Speaker 1: to ask because listening to your comments so far, I
- 35:59Speaker 1: was already kind of thinking we've got our group of
- 36:02Speaker 1: badass girls here. How would you fare on this trip?
- 36:05Speaker 2: Oh, my God. So for those of you who have
- 36:11Speaker 2: seen it, they're all these Scottish, right? They're Scottish? Scottish
- 36:18Speaker 2: or Irish?
- 36:19Speaker 1: The details behind the scenes I went through, they're all
- 36:23Speaker 1: from a different country. Everyone in the cast is from.
- 36:26Speaker 2: A different country. How did they become friends?
- 36:28Speaker 1: I'm blaming college. I blame that for most of.
- 36:31Speaker 7: The ills of the world.
- 36:33Speaker 2: It must have been.
- 36:33Speaker 1: College is a terrible thing. Stay out of school, kids. So,
- 36:36Speaker 1: I mean, you can finish high school, I guess, whatever. But, no,
- 36:40Speaker 1: that was my, because that is one of my favorite
- 36:42Speaker 1: things about this. It is what I usually, and it's
- 36:45Speaker 1: one of those I think I'm trying to figure out
- 36:47Speaker 1: as time goes on. Again, this is all just me
- 36:49Speaker 1: trying to figure out movies as a whole in general.
- 36:52Speaker 1: And I'm like, some of them will go wrong. 20,
- 36:55Speaker 1: 30 minutes of just character building and exposition and all
- 37:00Speaker 1: kinds of setup. And we are immediately thrown into this.
- 37:03Speaker 1: And we are thrown into these characters and we're thrown
- 37:06Speaker 1: into this little dynamic that's going on, especially once we
- 37:09Speaker 1: jump ahead to the second outing. And we really don't
- 37:14Speaker 1: get spoon-fed anything. And I think that's impressive. And to me,
- 37:19Speaker 1: because it's so solid, because even more than most of
- 37:23Speaker 1: those movies that spend 20 minutes detailing all this nonsense beforehand,
- 37:29Speaker 1: I'm like, this, I feel like I'm so much more
- 37:32Speaker 1: invested in these characters without having all that exposition, all
- 37:37Speaker 1: that background setup nonsense. It's like, it's still so well
- 37:42Speaker 1: put together and so well written and the performances obviously,
- 37:46Speaker 1: you know, attach themselves to the material and like, it's
- 37:49Speaker 1: so well done that I'm, totally into these characters so
- 37:53Speaker 1: I don't know I think I'm trying to figure out
- 37:56Speaker 1: what it is that's so different about this versus all
- 37:59Speaker 1: those other movies that invest so much time because that's
- 38:02Speaker 1: the thing there's me halfway into it going so yeah
- 38:04Speaker 1: I guess maybe they all met in college and this
- 38:08Speaker 1: is because it is it's another one of those it's
- 38:10Speaker 1: also kind of different because it's not a bunch of
- 38:12Speaker 1: 17 year old girls I'm like, one's married now. She's
- 38:16Speaker 1: got a pretty old kid. Like they're not little kids,
- 38:20Speaker 1: which is normally where if you're going to have any
- 38:21Speaker 1: female characters in a horror movie, they're going to be
- 38:23Speaker 1: like 17 and a cheerleader. You know, it's like, so
- 38:26Speaker 1: this is like further into their lives. And the fact
- 38:30Speaker 1: that we catch up with this group when we do
- 38:33Speaker 1: is kind of part of it too, I feel like,
- 38:35Speaker 1: because they're just experienced enough to have baggage so yeah
- 38:41Speaker 1: like i think that's all kind of part of it
- 38:43Speaker 1: but yeah so that's my thing is like none of
- 38:45Speaker 1: that stuff is spelled out so that was my best
- 38:47Speaker 1: guess is like they met in college they're all like
- 38:51Speaker 1: this is several years later because now the one's getting
- 38:53Speaker 1: out of medical school so it's been a lot of
- 38:55Speaker 1: years since they might have initially hooked up and now
- 38:58Speaker 1: they're just kind of that once a year let's get
- 39:01Speaker 1: back together and go on a trip and we'll still
- 39:03Speaker 1: be friends forever but not really so yeah Yeah, that's
- 39:08Speaker 1: my best guess.
- 39:10Speaker 2: But I think that's an interesting point is that because, yeah,
- 39:13Speaker 2: initially you're like, okay, like what are, you know, this
- 39:16Speaker 2: group of six 30 something year old women like they're
- 39:20Speaker 2: on this girl's trip and all of a sudden what
- 39:22Speaker 2: they're going to go spelunking in a random cave. Like
- 39:26Speaker 2: if I was on a girls trip and my friend
- 39:27Speaker 2: was like hey be ready by 7 a.m and we're
- 39:31Speaker 2: wear some active wear because we're gonna i'd be like
- 39:34Speaker 2: absolutely not what is wrong with i will stay here
- 39:37Speaker 2: and see you when you get back.
- 39:38Speaker 1: Just finish drinking from the night.
- 39:40Speaker 2: Before mimosas it's a girls trip like what But then
- 39:46Speaker 2: once they actually got into it, you were like, oh,
- 39:48Speaker 2: my God, they know what they're doing. Like, they've got
- 39:50Speaker 2: all their gear. They're all confident belaying down into this cave. Like, clearly,
- 39:54Speaker 2: they're all experienced outdoors women. And I was like, holy shit,
- 39:58Speaker 2: I admire these women. Like, they know what they're... That's
- 40:02Speaker 2: why they didn't have to give us all that backstory
- 40:04Speaker 2: of like, ew, why are you making us go to
- 40:05Speaker 2: this cave? And like, all that is because they're like, yeah, absolutely,
- 40:10Speaker 2: let's fucking get in this cave. We know what to do.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Again, you get to that, like... figuring out that it's
- 40:16Speaker 1: a recurring thing. You know, like this isn't their first
- 40:19Speaker 1: trip because we get the first trip before we even
- 40:23Speaker 1: started this earlier in the week when you were watching
- 40:27Speaker 1: the pre-credits sequence. You were already like, Oh my God,
- 40:31Speaker 1: what's the hell? So, I guess let's dive into the
- 40:35Speaker 1: pre-credits sequence.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Let's start at the very beginning.
- 40:40Speaker 1: Where were you scarred initially?
- 40:43Speaker 2: First of all, my first point is that the font
- 40:47Speaker 2: in the opening credits Makes this movie look like it's
- 40:50Speaker 2: from 1992. I mean.
- 40:54Speaker 1: I feel like it does seem like, and I don't
- 40:57Speaker 1: mean this in a sad. It's just weirdly. It's oddly
- 40:59Speaker 1: timeless in a way that it doesn't get pinned down.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Like the best you've got is that like camera.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:05Speaker 1: But it's just out of sync enough that like they're
- 41:08Speaker 1: not attached to GPS. They're not constantly taking selfies. Like,
- 41:13Speaker 1: you know, it's like everything is still like, a separate,
- 41:16Speaker 1: here's my big camera that, you know, in 2003 or
- 41:19Speaker 1: whatever it was like is pretty cool. Cause they just
- 41:21Speaker 1: came out with infrared. So like that actually seemed like
- 41:25Speaker 1: new technology. And like, other than that, it's like, here's
- 41:28Speaker 1: my camera, take a, you know, posed photo. That's the
- 41:30Speaker 1: last photo anyone will ever see. But yeah, so it's like,
- 41:34Speaker 1: it really is like, it's, it feels like it's technically
- 41:38Speaker 1: kind of attached to that time period. But, everything else
- 41:41Speaker 1: is so distant from the world because we almost immediately,
- 41:45Speaker 1: like within the first 10 minutes, like we're sucked out
- 41:48Speaker 1: of humanity and like everything is just them and wilderness
- 41:53Speaker 1: and caves and isolation.
- 41:54Speaker 2: And darkness.
- 41:55Speaker 1: And darkness.
- 41:56Speaker 2: So much darkness. Holy cow.
- 41:59Speaker 1: So you're saying you want to get yourself one of
- 42:01Speaker 1: these trips is what I'm hearing.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Never. All right.
- 42:05Speaker 1: What a slacker.
- 42:07Speaker 2: It's like, I feel like I have some, past traumas
- 42:10Speaker 2: associated because in like sixth grade my school was like
- 42:14Speaker 2: let's do a field trip to Mammoth Cave and we're
- 42:16Speaker 2: gonna go spelunking all you 10 and 11 year olds
- 42:19Speaker 2: and so then we like went down into the cave
- 42:22Speaker 2: and again it wasn't like normal like walking around it
- 42:25Speaker 2: was like let's crawl through this semi-flooded tunnel and you're
- 42:29Speaker 2: all gonna get really wet and by the way it's
- 42:31Speaker 2: 50 degrees down here all year round I came back
- 42:35Speaker 2: up and was shivering so hard they thought something was
- 42:37Speaker 2: wrong with me Probably was, but turns out it was
- 42:41Speaker 2: just cold and wet because you don't go into caves, friends.
- 42:46Speaker 1: I like caves.
- 42:48Speaker 2: Never.
- 42:49Speaker 1: It's got built-in air conditioning.
- 42:51Speaker 2: They're not meant for human habitation. They're meant for things
- 42:54Speaker 2: without eyes.
- 42:55Speaker 1: I'm barely human as it is.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Don't go in the caves.
- 42:58Speaker 1: As soon as I move in there, I can get
- 43:00Speaker 1: rid of these eyes.
- 43:01Speaker 2: Never go in the caves.
- 43:02Speaker 1: This is why I work in audio. I don't need
- 43:04Speaker 1: to be able to see. I just make weird bat
- 43:07Speaker 1: noises and the show will come together. Anyway, your pre-credits sequence.
- 43:14Speaker 1: We're already getting the rafting.
- 43:15Speaker 8: Right.
- 43:16Speaker 1: We get a little taste of like, all right, they're
- 43:18Speaker 1: kind of thrill-seekers. And then we immediately jumped to the trauma.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Oh, my God. It was so bad.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Rods through the face.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Rods through the face.
- 43:31Speaker 1: This happens in a lot of horror movies.
- 43:34Speaker 2: It happened. It happened. And it happened again and again
- 43:39Speaker 2: in the movie. Not again and again necessarily, but it
- 43:41Speaker 2: happened a couple more times with her dream sequences or whatever,
- 43:45Speaker 2: which I was like, that is a cheap thing. Plot device.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Except not. Like to me, I was watching it this
- 43:54Speaker 1: time and I'm like, I kind of respect it even
- 43:58Speaker 1: more because it's setting up such a bigger story by
- 44:01Speaker 1: the end that I'm like, if that, if the end
- 44:04Speaker 1: just happened and like we had nothing up, but the
- 44:07Speaker 1: fact that every 15, 20 minutes we're getting another little
- 44:11Speaker 1: snippet of something weird going on in her head. True.
- 44:15Speaker 1: That's only in her head that like, It totally works
- 44:18Speaker 1: by the time we get to the end of the movie.
- 44:19Speaker 1: That's a good point.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Okay.
- 44:21Speaker 1: I'll accept it. And this was one I was just...
- 44:23Speaker 1: I didn't do too much of. I didn't go looking
- 44:26Speaker 1: to see what other people said. But I do remember, like,
- 44:29Speaker 1: I think this was, like, an Ebert thing that he
- 44:31Speaker 1: mentioned was, like, how much there's weird penetrating and, like,
- 44:37Speaker 1: impaling imagery. Like, even so much, like, the... The road
- 44:42Speaker 1: sign when they get there has been shot through. It
- 44:45Speaker 1: has buckshot holes in it. When they get there, when
- 44:50Speaker 1: you see them driving up to the cave or whatever,
- 44:52Speaker 1: it's got holes in the sign. I didn't even know that.
- 44:55Speaker 1: I think that one was sighted. Then once we got
- 44:59Speaker 1: even in the cave, there's the weird bunch of tiny
- 45:02Speaker 1: little stalagmites, which are those weird tubes that form in Again,
- 45:06Speaker 1: we're in cave country here, so we've been to caves.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Some of us have crawled through and whined about it.
- 45:15Speaker 1: But I actually like looking at all these caves and
- 45:18Speaker 1: there are weird formations like that and I had a
- 45:20Speaker 1: bunch of those in the background and I'm like, It's
- 45:22Speaker 1: like a natural world version of a big spike that's
- 45:25Speaker 1: going to come through your head. I'm like, there is
- 45:27Speaker 1: this constant imagery that keeps coming up.
- 45:30Speaker 2: There's no scarier setting than a cave. Really, before this movie,
- 45:34Speaker 2: were there any that were set in that?
- 45:37Speaker 1: Total cave movies?
- 45:37Speaker 2: Because I don't remember any. It seems unique in that way.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Pick that setting and anything is going to be horrifying.
- 45:46Speaker 1: I especially like this. I feel like there's some that
- 45:49Speaker 1: have gone into caves. A cave at some point, but
- 45:52Speaker 1: nothing is quite as immersive as this movie.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I was freaking out. Oh my gosh.
- 45:59Speaker 1: So, I'm trying to think. Do we, I guess, just
- 46:03Speaker 1: jump into the Appalachians? Which again, we've got a nice
- 46:09Speaker 1: little tie here. We're near the Appalachians.
- 46:12Speaker 2: Home turf.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Again, it is weird that all these... People with foreign
- 46:17Speaker 1: accents are hanging out in the Appalachian Mountains.
- 46:19Speaker 2: Yes, that adds a whole other layer.
- 46:21Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, whatever.
- 46:22Speaker 2: It's exotic to them.
- 46:26Speaker 1: It is an interesting choice because even our director, why
- 46:29Speaker 1: would you choose to set it in this weird part
- 46:32Speaker 1: of America? I mean, you do need some sort of history.
- 46:37Speaker 1: Not that we're the... Globally speaking, we don't have the
- 46:41Speaker 1: most history, but you can go back far enough to
- 46:44Speaker 1: have the story take place. You do need a cave
- 46:47Speaker 1: system that's been around forever and people that have been
- 46:50Speaker 1: wandering around to get to our story later.
- 46:53Speaker 2: There is a history. Honestly, I'm surprised in that setting
- 46:58Speaker 2: that they didn't go for a weird gas station attendant
- 47:00Speaker 2: or something to come out and be like, you're going
- 47:02Speaker 2: to go into them caves.
- 47:04Speaker 1: It points to him for not doing such run-of-the-mill stuff.
- 47:08Speaker 1: It's just like they were driving to. Especially in the
- 47:13Speaker 1: 2000s era of horror, everything became weird, small town, backwards
- 47:19Speaker 1: ass cannibals. Everything became a bad Texas Chainsaw knockoff. Yeah,
- 47:26Speaker 1: the fact that he didn't really go into that. Which, again,
- 47:29Speaker 1: I think points to him because it just adds to
- 47:32Speaker 1: the isolation. We don't get other people at all. Once
- 47:37Speaker 1: we leave that hospital scene, there are no other people
- 47:40Speaker 1: in the movie. The entire rest of the movie. So
- 47:43Speaker 1: we don't get contact with the outside world. We don't
- 47:45Speaker 1: get interactions with other people to feel kind of normal.
- 47:49Speaker 1: That's one of the many things that I think is
- 47:52Speaker 1: so brilliant about this. It's just layer upon layer of
- 47:56Speaker 1: like different creepy thing. And like, you just kind of
- 48:00Speaker 1: adjust to like, all right, it's going to be this
- 48:02Speaker 1: kind of creepy movie. And then it's like a different thing.
- 48:05Speaker 1: It's like shifting gears. And then it's like, it's okay.
- 48:08Speaker 1: Now we're doing this for a little while. And then
- 48:10Speaker 1: you're like, okay, so they're going to go with it.
- 48:12Speaker 1: Oh shit. That's something else. So like it really, like
- 48:15Speaker 1: the more I get into it, like I was like
- 48:16Speaker 1: listing off, I'm like, we get into just like, as
- 48:19Speaker 1: if you don't have a problem, a phobia of being
- 48:21Speaker 1: impaled in the head with a giant thing. But then, like,
- 48:24Speaker 1: you get to, like, just once you get into the cave. But, like,
- 48:27Speaker 1: from there, it's just sort of weird. Like, everything feels off,
- 48:31Speaker 1: especially with our impalement and, like, immediate death of several
- 48:34Speaker 1: characters that we just met. Yeah, that happens quickly. But
- 48:36Speaker 1: that aside, it's like we also get to, like, as
- 48:39Speaker 1: soon as they get into the cave, that is shot
- 48:43Speaker 1: so well that, like, it just totally, like, even if
- 48:46Speaker 1: you don't have weird claustrophobic fears, like, it sets it
- 48:49Speaker 1: up so perfectly that I'm just like, okay. Okay. So again,
- 48:53Speaker 1: we're just dealing with weird claustrophobic kind of creepiness right now.
- 49:00Speaker 1: So that's enough for a whole movie. I mean, right there.
- 49:03Speaker 2: It really was.
- 49:04Speaker 1: I was so nervous. And then you get to like,
- 49:05Speaker 1: is there any worse thing? Oh yeah, a cave-in.
- 49:08Speaker 2: How about a cave-in?
- 49:09Speaker 1: Would you like to be buried alive? Because that can
- 49:12Speaker 1: be arranged.
- 49:13Speaker 2: That shot where she's in that tiny tunnel and she's like,
- 49:17Speaker 2: I'm stuck.
- 49:17Speaker 1: She's trapped and freaking out.
- 49:19Speaker 2: I stopped breathing. I think they all stopped breathing. They
- 49:22Speaker 2: were like, yeah. And then just like, go, go, go.
- 49:25Speaker 1: So the fact that we get to the cave-in, which is, again,
- 49:29Speaker 1: you can do an entire other horror movie or even
- 49:32Speaker 1: just a weird action movie around the cave-in. So then
- 49:36Speaker 1: you get to the level of, by that point, you
- 49:38Speaker 1: get to the darkness. Because you still kind of got
- 49:41Speaker 1: daylight when they're pretty close. But once they get in,
- 49:44Speaker 1: it's just pitch black. So there's, again, there's a primal
- 49:49Speaker 1: fear in people of just darkness and what could be
- 49:53Speaker 1: in there. So, I mean, you get through that stuff.
- 49:57Speaker 1: We get further in, they hit that cavern. Okay, now
- 50:00Speaker 1: we've got heights. Now if you ever thought about falling
- 50:04Speaker 1: to your death. So I'm like, like I said, every 10,
- 50:07Speaker 1: 15 minutes we change gears to a new trauma that
- 50:10Speaker 1: hits you.
- 50:11Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 50:11Speaker 1: That like each one is like impressive enough to be
- 50:14Speaker 1: its own horror movie and yet they're all kind of
- 50:16Speaker 1: rolled into one in this movie but.
- 50:18Speaker 2: Also total badass women that one who gets up there
- 50:21Speaker 2: and just like hooks i don't even know how she
- 50:23Speaker 2: did that i don't know what that's called i don't
- 50:25Speaker 2: know what she's.
- 50:26Speaker 1: Doing hanging by one arm doing that i'm just like
- 50:29Speaker 1: okay it's like american ninja warrior times 5 000 times
- 50:33Speaker 1: death if you fall.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Soul arm strength over this like cavern and just Oh man,
- 50:42Speaker 2: I was like, this is terrifying, but they're all totally badass.
- 50:46Speaker 2: And I think that one was, it was the other
- 50:48Speaker 2: blonde girl, not the main one with the daughter, but
- 50:50Speaker 2: the other one. So like we hadn't even heard anything
- 50:53Speaker 2: from her.
- 50:53Speaker 1: I think she's Rebecca.
- 50:54Speaker 2: I think she's Rebecca.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Again, like you'd get just enough, I start piecing together.
- 50:58Speaker 1: She was the other one that seemed super schooled on
- 51:00Speaker 1: it all. It's like Juno was in charge of everything
- 51:02Speaker 1: because she put herself in charge of everything. And then
- 51:05Speaker 1: like the next one that seemed like they were super
- 51:07Speaker 1: schooled on it was like Rebecca seemed like she knew
- 51:10Speaker 1: all the technical stuff.
- 51:11Speaker 2: And I thought she was like the Debbie Downer because
- 51:13Speaker 2: before they walk in, she's like, by the way, caves
- 51:17Speaker 2: can cause paranoia and hallucinations and all of the things
- 51:21Speaker 2: that happen later in the cave. Just for the audience.
- 51:23Speaker 1: Just so you guys know. This is all gonna happen.
- 51:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it was like, okay, this is some major foreshadowing.
- 51:31Speaker 2: Got it.
- 51:31Speaker 1: But again, I think it's her like knowing the actual
- 51:35Speaker 1: details of it and her the one that did read
- 51:38Speaker 1: the book.
- 51:38Speaker 2: No, I mean, good for her.
- 51:40Speaker 1: Yes, she knew. It was schooled. She knew all of it.
- 51:42Speaker 2: She was like, maybe we shouldn't go down in here,
- 51:44Speaker 2: and everyone else was like, yeah, we totally should. Great idea.
- 51:48Speaker 1: Still not my favorite. I realized this time, let's see,
- 51:50Speaker 1: I was trying to write down all of them as
- 51:53Speaker 1: I went, but Sam, there's only a certain breed of
- 51:58Speaker 1: girl who can rock the braided pigtails.
- 52:00Speaker 4: Yes.
- 52:02Speaker 1: Man, she was cool. Number one, she's adorable. But on
- 52:04Speaker 1: top of that, when we jump to later when someone
- 52:07Speaker 1: is injured, when she snaps into doctor mode and is
- 52:10Speaker 1: just like, get over here and just starts barking at her.
- 52:12Speaker 1: I was like, oh, Sam is cool. Sam was a badass.
- 52:16Speaker 2: Even the way, well, I don't know if we want.
- 52:19Speaker 1: To talk about that. They're all badasses, but yeah.
- 52:22Speaker 2: To the end, she was a badass.
- 52:24Speaker 1: Sam with her braided pigtails. I was sold right there.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Also, I was like, what kind of med student is...
- 52:30Speaker 2: knows about because like she sees them and then she's
- 52:33Speaker 2: immediately like they're cave creatures they've adapted to this environment
- 52:38Speaker 2: they have no eyeballs they hear like bats through sound
- 52:42Speaker 2: i was like i don't know any sort of pre-med
- 52:45Speaker 2: program that would prepare you for cave creatures i'm sorry.
- 52:49Speaker 1: I've seen enough horror movies i could have picked all
- 52:52Speaker 1: that i mean as the first time through i'm like
- 52:54Speaker 1: as soon as they started making the weird noises i'm
- 52:56Speaker 1: like all right they're using some sort of sonar like
- 52:59Speaker 1: yeah maybe it's just schooling from other horror movies that
- 53:01Speaker 1: i've done over the years.
- 53:03Speaker 2: Probably more intensive than med school in terms of cave creatures.
- 53:07Speaker 1: And once again i tell kids stay out of school.
- 53:10Speaker 2: College waste of your time med school.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Just put a bandaid on it. You'll be fine.
- 53:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:17Speaker 1: But again, most of this I was still invested in
- 53:21Speaker 1: because even like the cave creatures in the eye, not
- 53:24Speaker 1: to jump ahead, but like I'm down with some caves.
- 53:29Speaker 1: So I've been and seen the blind cave fish display
- 53:33Speaker 1: that even the museum here has a bunch of them.
- 53:36Speaker 1: And I'm like, this is based in reality. It is
- 53:39Speaker 1: what happens to creatures that get thrown into a new
- 53:42Speaker 1: weird system.
- 53:43Speaker 2: Yeah, you got to adapt and evolve.
- 53:46Speaker 1: Yeah, adapt and survive. And that's what these characters have done.
- 53:49Speaker 1: But we've jumped ahead. So that was my thing. Going
- 53:53Speaker 1: through that list there, I was like, that I think
- 53:56Speaker 1: was what that first time through I was so amazed
- 53:59Speaker 1: with was like, you're 50 minutes in. you haven't seen
- 54:03Speaker 1: a creature. You haven't seen, nobody's getting taken, you know,
- 54:06Speaker 1: nobody's getting killed off by a slasher. But I'm like,
- 54:09Speaker 1: this has been the most intense 50 minutes of my life.
- 54:12Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 54:13Speaker 1: And then I'm like, we didn't even have to have,
- 54:16Speaker 1: like you.
- 54:16Speaker 2: Really could have rounded up the rest of that movie.
- 54:19Speaker 1: And just had some other dynamic kick in and give
- 54:22Speaker 1: us some more tension by the end. But I'm like,
- 54:23Speaker 1: then we get to these like creatures that show up
- 54:26Speaker 1: and I'm like, okay, now it's a whole new movie.
- 54:29Speaker 1: It's already successful at so many things. Then that comes
- 54:33Speaker 1: along and they don't drop the ball either. That is
- 54:36Speaker 1: super disturbing. The first time she sees that from afar.
- 54:41Speaker 2: Oh my God. What did I just see? It's not good.
- 54:46Speaker 2: Things are not good.
- 54:47Speaker 1: I don't know. I think that's the most amazing part
- 54:51Speaker 1: is that you're 50 plus minutes in. Before you ever
- 54:55Speaker 1: even get to the.
- 54:56Speaker 2: It's like the last third of the movie where they
- 54:58Speaker 2: pop up.
- 54:59Speaker 1: Which would have been the whole pitch for most horror creators.
- 55:03Speaker 1: That would be the whole focus of their movie. Again,
- 55:09Speaker 1: I've gotten so into our director.
- 55:12Speaker 2: Neil Marshall?
- 55:14Speaker 1: Neil Marshall.
- 55:15Speaker 2: Neil Marshall. Shout out.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Oh, man. Again, it's one of those film-wise hadn't done
- 55:22Speaker 1: a ton.
- 55:23Speaker 2: I can't.
- 55:24Speaker 1: Think i have a copy of dog soldiers and haven't
- 55:26Speaker 1: watched it so i may go watch it like tonight
- 55:28Speaker 1: or this weekend but like i'm like it's it was
- 55:32Speaker 1: like the first one-off kind of a thing of like
- 55:35Speaker 1: okay i want to start making horror movies this is
- 55:37Speaker 1: like the next big movie like his second real feature
- 55:40Speaker 1: is this which is so amazing but for like a
- 55:44Speaker 1: few of the other like i don't know again i
- 55:47Speaker 1: don't know how much anybody else has seen but of
- 55:50Speaker 1: the next ones that followed it up I went and saw, eventually, like,
- 55:54Speaker 1: it was a while before I'd seen Doomsday. If you
- 55:57Speaker 1: haven't seen Doomsday, it's like, and again, I've seen interviews
- 56:01Speaker 1: with him, like, he is just a kid who grew
- 56:03Speaker 1: up watching 80s horror and action movies. It's every one
- 56:06Speaker 1: of them rolled into one. Again, it's another one that, like,
- 56:10Speaker 1: every 15, 20 minutes, you get a new movie. And
- 56:13Speaker 1: it's a new, like, ridiculous, crazy, like, as grounded as
- 56:17Speaker 1: this one is, like, Doomsday is insane. Like, it is, like,
- 56:23Speaker 1: post-apocalyptic level of insanity, but mixed with five other movie genres. Like,
- 56:28Speaker 1: it is so amazing that he put this together. And, like,
- 56:32Speaker 1: that one is just fun. Like, Descent is more grueling. Like,
- 56:35Speaker 1: and I love it, but I'm like, Doomsday is just
- 56:38Speaker 1: over-the-top fun. And then I recently, after that, he did Centurion.
- 56:43Speaker 1: Centurion is just, like, old school. Like, for a while,
- 56:46Speaker 1: it was what I now describe as, like, the sword
- 56:49Speaker 1: and sandal genre of, like, Just people with their swords
- 56:52Speaker 1: and fighting. And this takes this, but it becomes pretty serious.
- 56:58Speaker 1: And it's, again, bloody as hell when it needs to be.
- 57:02Speaker 1: And tells a really interesting story. And kind of a
- 57:06Speaker 1: grand story. And works in great action. Just those three
- 57:09Speaker 1: movies alone, I've just been amazed with this guy. So, yeah.
- 57:14Speaker 1: And he jumped to a lot of TV now. Like,
- 57:17Speaker 1: if you look up... Doing one-offs or a couple of
- 57:22Speaker 1: series that's already a long-running series. The only thing recently,
- 57:26Speaker 1: including your Game of Thrones I'm seeing here. But the
- 57:30Speaker 1: one that was interesting, because I remember seeing the promos
- 57:33Speaker 1: for that new Lost in Space series and going, maybe,
- 57:38Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 57:38Speaker 2: I didn't even know that.
- 57:39Speaker 1: And then I got, he, I think, created, or at
- 57:41Speaker 1: least took the concept and ran with it. And I
- 57:44Speaker 1: think that first pilot was his. and did another episode
- 57:47Speaker 1: or two direction, but I think he was the driving
- 57:49Speaker 1: force getting that made, which, again, I liked that quite
- 57:53Speaker 1: a bit, and now I'm like, oh, that's probably why. Also,
- 57:57Speaker 1: the new Hellboy that's coming out is gonna be him.
- 58:00Speaker 2: Oh, I didn't know that.
- 58:01Speaker 1: Well, that was one of those, I was like, when
- 58:03Speaker 1: they said... they were talking about making a new Hellboy,
- 58:06Speaker 1: and I'm like, wait, without Guillermo? Well, without Guillermo. Guillermo,
- 58:11Speaker 1: that's his thing. All his movies before that tied themselves
- 58:16Speaker 1: together into Hellboy. It's so perfect for him. You can't
- 58:20Speaker 1: give it to any other, wait, Neil Marshall? All of
- 58:22Speaker 1: a sudden, I was just like, all right, I want
- 58:24Speaker 1: to see it now. I was already weirded out that
- 58:27Speaker 1: Doug's not going to be there, but I'm just like,
- 58:29Speaker 1: all right, you brought Neil in.
- 58:32Speaker 2: I mean, this movie was... really really good yep and
- 58:36Speaker 2: especially for ones that are like mid-2000s it's so very
- 58:39Speaker 2: easy to see them as like dated and lame and
- 58:43Speaker 2: this one i watched and finished it was just like
- 58:46Speaker 2: wow and.
- 58:47Speaker 1: It's so different than what was going on in horror
- 58:50Speaker 1: at that point because you get again you get very
- 58:53Speaker 1: distinctive 80s horror movies 90s became its own weird horror
- 58:57Speaker 1: thing and then the 2000s and post was just were
- 59:02Speaker 1: knee-deep in the middle of what became torture porn. Everything
- 59:07Speaker 1: was Saul and hostile and everything was just... let's focus
- 59:11Speaker 1: on the gore and who really cares about characters and
- 59:14Speaker 1: then this kind of comes out of nowhere and it's
- 59:16Speaker 1: like so I mean doesn't disappoint on weird gory monster
- 59:21Speaker 1: grossness but We're already so well invested in those characters
- 59:25Speaker 1: by then that I'm just like, it's distinctively different from
- 59:29Speaker 1: what was going on at that time.
- 59:31Speaker 9: So what's the story now?
- 59:33Speaker 5: According to the guidebook, this cave system has three ways
- 59:37Speaker 5: in and out.
- 59:37Speaker 9: This is just one of them. Isn't that right, Juno?
- 59:41Speaker 2: Juno, that's right, isn't it?
- 59:44Speaker 9: Check the book.
- 59:47Speaker 2: I didn't bring it.
- 59:49Speaker 4: What?
- 59:51Speaker 9: No point. For Christ's sake, Juno.
- 59:56Speaker 2: I knew it.
- 59:56Speaker 9: I knew this wasn't right.
- 59:58Speaker 2: You filed a flight plan to Mountain Rescue. If we
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: don't report in, they'll come looking for us. Yeah, that's
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: how it's supposed to work, except I put in a
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: flight plan for Boram Caverns, and this isn't Boram Caverns,
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: is it, Juno?
- 1:00:10Speaker 9: We're in the wrong fucking cave. Holly was right. Boram
- 1:00:14Speaker 9: Caverns was a tourist trap. Don't try and pin this
- 1:00:17Speaker 9: fucking shite on me.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: This is not caving.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: This is an ego trip.
- 1:00:21Speaker 9: Come on, Rebecca. I didn't know this was going to happen.
- 1:00:24Speaker 9: This is exactly what we believe in. We've always said
- 1:00:26Speaker 9: if there's no risk, what's the point? Don't try and
- 1:00:29Speaker 9: justify this. Where are we? It hasn't got a name.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: It's a new system. I wanted us all to discover it.
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: No one's ever been down here before.
- 1:00:41Speaker 9: Fucking kidding me.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: Oh, God.
- 1:00:46Speaker 9: How the hell are we supposed to get out?
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: There may not be a way out. Look, there's no
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: going back now. We have to find a way out
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: of this chamber and keep pushing forward.
- 1:00:55Speaker 9: What the fuck do you think you're doing? We all
- 1:00:58Speaker 9: trusted you. You told me this was going to be
- 1:01:00Speaker 9: good for Sarah.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Have you any idea what she's been through?
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: No.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: You couldn't get away fast enough, you selfish cow!
- 1:01:10Speaker 9: We all lost something in that crash. Just get us
- 1:01:18Speaker 9: out of here. Look, cave systems sometimes break ground. It's
- 1:01:25Speaker 9: a small chance.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: But if we stay here, we'll die. Let's go.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: And I was just so impressed with how badass all
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: of the women are. It's just this group of friends
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: who are all badasses. Even when the... tunnel collapsed and everything,
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: they're still ready to keep on going and figure it
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: out because that's what you got to do. There was
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: no like, oh my God, are we going to be okay?
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: How are we going to get out? They were just like,
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: all right, let's explore this cave and figure out another
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: way because that's what we got to do to live.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: That's pretty awesome for a horror movie.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: To have any horror movie that has a useful female character,
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: let alone the entire cast is nothing but competent, intelligent,
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: capable woman that I'm just like, this is, again, a
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: very different thing than we've seen previously.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: It's a hell of a screenplay, if nothing else.
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: It was. Now can we talk about the reveal?
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: Which reveal are we discussing? Past the monsters?
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: No, the monster reveal. Okay, so we already talked about
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: her being down there and seeing one from like 30
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: feet away drinking out of the pool of whatever.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: How was that?
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: Yeah, just like a flash of it, which is terrifying
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: in itself. But then, so they start going into this
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: other entrance that they think might help lead them out
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: and they hear the jingle jangling and they turn on that.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: So that's another cool thing is that I... you know
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: looked up after how they made it and that they
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: only used the light sources that the actresses had in
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: the movie so all you can see is the night
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: vision camera and they turn on this night vision camera
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: and it's a whole cavern full of bones it's the
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: kill room and then you see them all start to
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: freak out they're like we need to get out of
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: here asap like we we gotta go we gotta go
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: and she's switching back and forth with her camera. And
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: then all of a sudden just, and.
- 1:03:29Speaker 9: He's right behind her.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: Oh my God. I jumped off of my couch and
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: screamed and the dogs freaked out. And it was a
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: whole thing because that is the most effective jump scare.
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: Good Lord.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: Again, watching that. And that's why I'm like, it's not
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: like this is a disappointment to traditional horror fans.
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: No, it was amazing.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: It's got the jump scares, but I'm like watching it
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: this time. I'm like, Most of them aren't even cheap
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: jump scares. Like they are legit part of the story.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: There's the one where he comes down from the ceiling.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Maybe the one time I was just like, all right,
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: that time you were just trying to get them. But
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: the rest of them, I was just like, they were
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: all legitimate. Like within that scenario, that's what would happen
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: and it would scare the hell out of me. It's
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: not a jump for the audience. It's if you were there,
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: you would be frightened. That's what the characters are going through.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: It's so effective. That scene is so effective. Holy cow.
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: That dude right behind her. Oh my goodness. That scared
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: the bejesus out of me.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: So now you're on this trip. How do you respond?
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: You didn't like when you had to get up at
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: 7 in the morning.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: I would never go in that cave. We would get
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: to the edge of that cave and I'd be like,
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: that looks fun. You all go ahead. I'll be back
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: at the cabin. You just look down and be like, nope.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: Immediately just, nope. Absolutely not. That's not my game. That's
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: not what I'm about. I'll go back and make us
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: some brownies and you guys come home. We'll eat some
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: baked goods. Enjoy your time with the cave creatures.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: You're going to have to start hanging by one arm.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure you're going to start building that up.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: Clearly, I need to work on my upper arm strength. Geez,
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: they must have all been very strong.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: All the ladies underestimate the upper body strength.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: That is the number one lesson of this movie.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: I want to jump to that eventually. Once we get
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: to our main two characters fighting, good lord they're bad
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: asses oh my god yeah at some point yes let's
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: get to that but um so from that point I
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: don't know where do you where do you go with
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: again you have extensive notes I.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: Have so many notes I'm looking because literally I stopped
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: taking notes after that jump scare with the because I
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: was so nervous that I was just like my knees
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: were in my mouth like I'm just biting my knees
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: for the last half an hour of the movie um
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: I want to talk about the whole Juno thing where
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: she's like, you're not the only one who lost someone
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: in this crash. And it's like, bitch, what?
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: That's my favorite part about this movie. Truthfully, like that
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: dynamic between, what is our main girl?
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: Juno and Sarah.
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: Sarah?
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: Sarah's the blonde girl.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: Between Sarah and Juno, it's like that to me is
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: what pushes it over the top. I think everything else
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: is super effective. That weird little.
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: I can't decide how I feel about it.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: I think I know exactly what he's going for, but
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: the fact that none of it is spelled out is
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: so amazing that I'm just like.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, that's true.
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: And like leaving it to, again, what little is written
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: there and then the performances. And those two are so
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: weird around each other. Yeah. By the time we get
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: to the end, that moment of them just standing in
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: the cave together as they're eyeballing each other, just when
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: they realize everyone else is dead and they're like, okay,
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: so it's just us. There's already like, if this were
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: just a party scene with the two of them, it
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: would be uncomfortable. But what they've just seen, I'm like,
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: oh no, this is not going to go well. Now
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: you're at the point where all bets are off. There
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: are no rules. You're in the dark by yourselves and
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: it's life or death. What are we going to do
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: from here?
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: I feel like that's when you'd be like, ladies, this
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: is not the time. We're escaping from the cave creature. Also,
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: maybe this is exactly the time because if I found
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: out somebody was having an affair with my husband and
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: now he's dead. I would probably kill her. To me, that's...
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: Especially if I was in a cave.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: That's my favorite part, is they don't treat these characters
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: like not real people. They're all real people, and to
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: the point that they have major flaws. So by the
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: time we get to that little dynamic, and I think
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: what's amazing is it's kind of always there with them.
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: From the very first time we see them.
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, it's definitely weird.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: She shoves her out of the raft. is that again
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: like think about it is that I didn't even notice
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: that cause like the first time through you're watching it
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: you're like horseplay they're so fun but I'm like is
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: that just residual little stuff that like when you do
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: even when you're with your sort of group of friends
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: and you're kind of acting out even if she didn't
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: know no there's just a dynamic there and she's annoyed
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: by Juno just that just enough that like here's my
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: chance bam and like It's, like, ingrained in her, like,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: I don't know, something about her. And, like, she, again,
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: even within that friendly horseplay, like, that's what came out
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: of it. She didn't shove another girl. And, again, Juno
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: is welcoming it because she stands up and acts like
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: a jerk because she kind of is at times. But
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: you also, like, everything is in that scene right from there.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: They come up. They park the boat. Who does the
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: husband run to? Does he run to his wife?
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: I didn't even know.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Well, I wouldn't have known. Again, that's why I'm like,
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: it's so well put together because he goes over to
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: help Juno.
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: That motherfucker.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: And mom runs out to the daughter because the daughter
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: is the one she cares about. So again, I don't
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: know that she's even that.
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: Upset about it. I'm glad he got impaled by a
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: metal rod.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: Well, I'm like, I don't know that she even... was
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: worried about it because even that they seem like a
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: weird couple the half second we spend with them they're
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: already uncomfortable and weird and i'm like i think she's
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: way more invested in her daughter in this family and
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: like there's a reason that there's a disconnect there and
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: the only thing he's connecting with now is maybe juno
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: so like Everything is in that first scene. And I'm
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: just like, this is amazing. That like so much of
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: that is already put together before we hit the credits.
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: Now I got to rewatch it before we hit those
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: early 90s credits.
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: Before we hit the credits.
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: Those timeless credits.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: And that's what I think like as you go on,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: like you don't know that that first time through. So
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: by the time we get to that, and they never
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: even spell it out, it's that if you put together
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: her comment, the necklace, the weirdness between them the whole time.
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: And then her little comment about losing, like again, they
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: never even address it. Even at the point where they're
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: ready to kill each other, they don't just start standing
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: there yelling out details of what was going on. It's just, nope,
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: I'm going to kill you now. So I don't know.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: I think that dynamic to me is what like pushes
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: it way over the edge of being like above and
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: beyond most horrible. And that's why I said earlier, if
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: you took the cave creatures out, I think you could
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: have just dialed up that little relationship. and still had
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: an amazing movie. Like there could have never been any creatures.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: There could have been a cave in, maybe they lose
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: a girl or two in an accident along the way.
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: And then by the end, those two start to come
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: to terms with, um, yeah, there's more between us that
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: we need to sort out.
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm amazed. But yeah, I think that's,
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: I think that's such an amazing part of it is that,
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: that you from the, I mean, it's always kind of there.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: Like you also see like what her, like I said,
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: what her attachment is. Do you ever see her in
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: her dream sequences and her weird visions? Is she ever
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: thinking about her husband? She lost her husband too, but
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: she's not like, again, I think there's a disconnect. I
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: don't think they were in a place where she was
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: all that invested in him either. So it's like, I
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: think she loved her daughter and her daughter was kind
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: of her world at that point. So that's why she's
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: such a mess when we jump ahead a year later.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: And it's like, that was the main part of her
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: life and now that's gone. And do we see what
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: happens from there? So I've been ranting. I'll give you
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: a thing to go with. What, what do you have?
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: It's a point you wanted to get into.
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: Oh, in terms of, Oh, so there, the friend Beth,
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: the one with the short, like black hair.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: The one who gets stabbed in the neck.
- 1:12:04Speaker 8: The one who thought she was so cool and look
- 1:12:06Speaker 8: what happens.
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: Who's the first one to get injured? Who's the first
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: one to die?
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: I thought that was Holly.
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: Oh, wait.
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: Holly's the one with the spiky hair.
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: Holly's the one that thinks she's super cool. Wait, which
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: one is Beth?
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: Holly's the one with the leg. Beth is the one
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: who Juno turns around after killing the gay creature and stabs.
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: Okay, her friend. The only one that seems like really
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: kind of, the only one who like lives near and
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: is actually invested in our characters. Where everybody else seems
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: like they're let's get together once a year.
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: But it seems like she's sympathizing with Juno because Juno
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: says the whole like, you weren't the only one to
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: lose something in the crash. And then Beth is like, yeah.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: Kind of sympathetic. But then later, yeah, she's like, yeah
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: spoilers we threw it out there listening to this like.
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: I already told you a spoiler it's your own.
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: Fault she gets like stabbed in the neck and first
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: of all you're like you're probably gonna die pretty soon
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: i feel like you bleed out of the neck pretty
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: fast that's like one of the places where that's gonna.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: Happen try not to get stabbed in the Yeah, like it's.
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: Going to happen pretty quickly. But then Sarah comes back
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: and then Beth is still somehow alive and she's like,
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: by the way.
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: That's just movie logic. Sometimes you need to be alive
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: just a little bit.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: To spill out some details. And somehow didn't get killed
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: by the creatures.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: But anyhow. There's no sport there. She couldn't run around.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: It was boring.
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: She's like, By the way, Juna was having an affair
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: with your husband. Beth, that's what you're going to do
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: right now? These people are all in a cave, stuck together,
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: trying to survive, and now you're going to throw out, like,
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: by the way, one of the other three people who's
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: still alive fucked your husband. But, like, I don't want
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: to say anything, but, like, obviously that's not the time
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: to hear that. You're on survival mode. You don't need
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: to know who had an affair with your husband and
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: who didn't.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: No, I think it is the perfect time. And this is, again,
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: this is, like, one of my favorite things about any...
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: horrific setup it's what you all I mean it's what
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: we find out immediately going back to like Night of
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: Living Dead whenever you're thrown into some horrible situation and
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: you're dealing with even if it isn't supernatural or monsters
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: or whatever any horrible situation but specifically when you're fighting
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: some big evil in the end the thing you really
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: need to watch out for isn't the creature it's the
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: person next to you who's probably gonna screw you over
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: and use you to get away So that they can, like,
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: other people will screw you over well before, like, you
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: know where the monster stands. You know what to expect.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: The monster's gonna try to kill you. But they're upfront
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: about it. The person next to you, on the other hand,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: might be very deceitful and may turn around and just,
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: I don't know, impale you and leave you for dead
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: so that they can run away. So that, again, like,
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: that's one of the things I respond to so much
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: in this movie is that they do, like, by the end,
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: what's the worst thing going on? It's their infighting. It's
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: them turning on each other. It's like they might have
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: been able to get away. At least some of them
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: might have been able to escape. In theory, not really,
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: based on the way he wanted to make the movie.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: But if this were some sort of real thing, if
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: they actually worked together, but by the end it all
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: comes back down to weird interpersonal issues like it doesn't
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: have anything to do with cave creatures it's you were
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: screwing my husband i've always kind of hated you and
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: now i want to leave you for.
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: Dead so and i mean like good when that happened
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: i wasn't even like oh no i was like uh
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: good again.
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: I feel like i thought that the first time through
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: going back but this time i was like You know,
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: as much as, I mean, Juno's a showboat. Don't get
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: me wrong. Like, Juno is a cocky chick and she
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: is very full of herself. But by the end, I
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: was like, Juno never tried to hurt anybody. She accidentally
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: hurt someone. Now, I'm not counting the adultery. I'm just
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: talking about within the scenario.
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: I'm talking about her leading them down into a cave
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: that nobody knew what that cave was. She told them
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: it was going to be like a different tourist cave.
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: And then she was like, oh, yeah, sorry.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: But she wasn't planning their death.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: No one's ever mapped. And I was hoping we could discover. Bitch, what?
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: You were hoping we could discover this cave?
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: Again, they call her out within the movie.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: This is an ego trip.
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: This is all about her.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: You want us to discover a cave? We came in
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: our Nike sweatshirts and our very thin sweatshirts.
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: I mean, to me, you shouldn't be going into touristy
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: without everything.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: And you want us to magellan this cave right now, Juno,
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: instead of just taking us to... It's a girl's weekend, Juno.
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: There's food to be had. They don't have light girls weekends.
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: You've seen these girls.
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: There's boxes of wine to be drank. Do you want
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: to go into an undiscovered cave and figure it out
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: just for what?
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: Juno is a flawed character, I will give you. But
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: she never set out to hurt anybody.
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: She went into an undiscovered cave.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: That's because she's full of herself. It's all nothing but
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: ego and cocky. And again, it's her being super self-assured
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: of herself. I've got this. i'll make sure nobody gets
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: hurt all you have to do is stay with me
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: and i'll get you out of here like throughout she
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: never loses faith in the fact she's always got everything
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: taken care of until she jams somebody in the neck
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: with a pick but i mean that's the thing like
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: she didn't even do that she's in the middle of
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: fighting these creatures the one like main thing that you're
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: like oh this went horribly wrong she like kills one
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: of her own and she doesn't even really do that
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: Sarah kills her. So I was like, really? The only
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: one who screws everybody over and kills them is Sarah.
- 1:17:59Speaker 4: Oh, no.
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: So by the end, I was just watching it that
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: second time through. I was like, Juno never actually did it.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: She's shady. She's screwing around with her husband. And she
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: does try to lie and cover up the fact that
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: she accidentally killed one of their own crew. But the
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: rest of the time through, I'm like, she's still trying
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: to get them out of there. Because she got them
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: in there. You're stuck on that one.
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: I'm really upset if any of my friends did that.
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: But if all of your friends were nothing but base
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: jumping thrill seekers.
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, this is not my group of friends.
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like, this is not a big deal. Yes,
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: she should have taken a map or contracted the right
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: person so they'd come looking for them. Like, she overstepped
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: some bounds. But again, she's got a huge ego. Like,
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: she's out of control. But wasn't ever trying to kill anyone.
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: But to jump ahead, again, we... eventually get to the
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: end i mean is there a hero in this story
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: like we don't really like the one that we've been
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: going through the one that is our like our end
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: point the one we've been sort of siding with is
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: the one that turns on and literally leaps there to die,
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: and specifically so she can escape. I'm like, that's kind
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: of the least heroic thing I've seen this whole movie.
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: Ooh, but can we talk about the Carrie imagery that
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: was happening?
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: Or just let's soak ourselves in blood.
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: Yeah, when she... comes out of that pool of blood
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: just like let's let's just.
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: Talk about the imagery in general because i think this
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: thing looks again points to our director but this thing
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: looks amazing and that blood shot is phenomenal and it's
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: a reason it's on the cover but even like badass
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: throughout it though like the the fact that i mean
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: he this is the one that like all of a
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: sudden the film geek in me was like He uses
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: darkness in a weird way, like almost a Lynchian level
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: of darkness into darkness. Like when at the point where
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: she like stabs her in the neck, when Juno stabs
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: her in the neck and then she's like freaked out
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: and backing away and just. disappears into the darkness. And
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: I'm like, that was amazing.
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: It's the most effective thing you can have for being
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: like nothing.
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: Like it's so, all that you need is just them
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: and their flashlights. And it's horrifying because you picture whatever
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: the hell you want in the fucking cave.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: Well, you were saying the real world, like the lighting
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: being real lighting, the fact that it's also almost entirely lit,
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: In these weird two colors. Everything is red and green.
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: And Juno's almost always in red. Again, always kind of
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: painting her as the villain. She's always got the flair.
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: She's always kind of got red behind her. And then
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: when we've got like the two, I think the doctor
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: and what's her name go off, Rebecca, and they're like
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: off and they're like carrying around the green. So like
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: they're kind of, oh, we hope these two get out.
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: They're good characters. It is a little like, and then
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: later it gets kind of mixed because I think they just,
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: whatever's left, they start. But all of that looks so
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: gorgeous because it's just laid in with like layers of
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: darkness and this weird over the top red color behind
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: them and It all looks so damn good.
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: And I was absolutely certain that they had filmed this
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: in an actual cave. And of course they haven't. No
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: cave at all. But it's so realistic and so claustrophobic
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: and horrifying that I was just like, yeah, naturally they had...
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: Because it will give you that feeling.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: It's amazing.
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: I'll tell you.
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: That there isn't a cave in this movie.
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: It will make you so nervous. It made me very nervous.
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: Holy cow. But... Can we talk about the ending?
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: Do you want to jump? That's the thing. Are we jumping? Well,
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: I feel like we haven't addressed the creatures, but I'm
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: like- Oh, no, we should. I feel like by the end,
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: I'm like, they're not the focus of the movie for me.
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: They're so not essential. They are. They're interesting. They look great.
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: It's like they're not smart. Really? They have nothing going
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: for them other than being these primeval creatures where now
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: you're in their environment?
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: But it is interesting, I guess, once again, in writing this,
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: he came up with this really interesting concept of people
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: that get trapped there and become these creatures, essentially. Are
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: they primal creatures that have just been in the center
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: of the earth forever? Or are these those old miners.
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: From generations ago?
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: And again, she's pulling out that equipment from over 100
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: years ago. And then it's like, well, are these adapt
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: and survive? And there are male and females of that.
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: Are they creating new, more mutated little versions of them?
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: And generations later, this is what became of these creatures.
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: trapped in their miners.
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: Oh i didn't even think about it from that.
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: Angle this is an amazing story that he's pieced together.
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: That's what yeah i love the the idea of that
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: monster because it's so based in science and real species
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: that do live in caves and like it's not that
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: far off like it could absolutely happen.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: On how that you know in any other environment they'd
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: be helpless like in the light they would just ball up.
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: And die but now you're in there but in there.
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: Yeah um when they and they probably haven't had a
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: ton of people enter in there that's why again you
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: get a bunch of cocky people showing up.
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: That's why you don't go into caves again you're not
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: on board with this you're not a good travel agent.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: You that we're getting you that doug manager job because
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: this travel agent thing is not where don't go anywhere
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: don't leave the house.
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: Really honestly don't leave your house I.
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: Mean, not that I do, but I feel like they, yeah, they,
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: they get in there and you get people like thrown
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: into their scenario. And like, when you see him, like
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: when they first like start looking for him and he
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: freaks out and he runs up the wall and onto
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: the ceiling. And I'm like, he is like made to
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: exist in this world. And you are in so much trouble. Yeah.
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: They're so bad. They're so scary.
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: So yeah, I think the creature designs.
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: Don't ever go into a cave for any reason. Why
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: would anyone go into a cave? Don't go into a cave.
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: I want to go to Cave City right now.
- 1:24:18Speaker 9: Never.
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: Not meant for human.
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: Doing it.
- 1:24:21Speaker 4: Nope.
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: Don't do it. Let's get a group outing. Would you
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: like to go?
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: Email him and not me because I will tell you
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: not to go in a cave for any reason whatsoever.
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: Neil, if you'd like to come visit some caves with me,
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: Squire Boons is pretty cool. Mammoth Onyx is a weird offshoot.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: I really have been to some caves, dude. I can
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: get you a tour going, so call me up. All right,
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: so we've addressed the creatures look awesome and are super scary.
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: They really are. It's a very smart design of a monster.
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: I love that. It's very effective. Again, we mentioned it before,
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: that first scene where the one is behind her is amazing. Horrifying.
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: And then the fact that the one later where there's
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: a whole, like all of a sudden, we've only seen
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: them kind of one at a time. Oh, yeah, when
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: they all get together. But then suddenly there's a whole
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: group of them. It's like, oh, God.
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: You're screwed. That's it. You're dead.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: We're in trouble now. So. Then we at least get
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: to see, like, again, once we hit, once our two
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: main characters are kind of all that's left, they both
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: hit like, I mean, Juno kind of jumps to it
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: pretty quick. She's like a badass and seems fitting because
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: she's very full of herself. So she knows that she's
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: a badass. But also we see our main character kind
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: of snap. And when she hits that- She's got that
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: Carrie blood. It is immersed in the blood. It's from
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: that point on, she is like warrior. And she does
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: nothing but kill. It's amazing. It's amazing.
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: And her blue eyes, she has the crazy eyes.
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: Well, and again, very fitting as we move to the ending.
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: Crazy is kind of a key element here. Back to crazy.
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: It always comes back to crazy for you.
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: But i want to talk about that ending all.
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: Right let's it also makes me wonder and wanted to
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: ask i think you probably had the same ending as
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: i did but there were.
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: Not satisfied with that ending i.
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: The one i have i was and i realize again
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: i i've I think I started the way most people
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: process stuff. And over the years, I've turned into a
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: totally different person that likes stuff that usually pisses off
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: other people. So I realized why that ending would piss
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: people off. I think I enjoy like it's again, one
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: of those things that made the movie for me. And
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: if you take away that ending, it annoys me and
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: cheapens the whole thing. which is why we won't discuss
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: the sequel.
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: Because the fact that there isn't a sequel is a
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: terrible idea.
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: To me, it totally undercuts everything going on in the
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: first movie. And I watched it. It's not, I mean,
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: but it's also not original at that point. It's like everything,
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: because Neil didn't do it. So it's like the director
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: of photography or something took over and like everything it does,
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: it does again. But I'm like, yeah, we saw that.
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: It was really cool the first time. Now you're just
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: kind of stealing from the old one. And so, yeah, I,
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: The fact that there is a sequel just, to me,
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: cheapens the whole ending of this movie. So I guess
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: describe the ending so I make sure that I solve this.
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: Because he also cut it two different ways before it
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: was released. He had one that was like the UK cut.
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: And then the American cut.
- 1:27:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: And then it kind of became one sort of thing.
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: But I think that's where he always wanted it to
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: end the way that it ends that I saw. So.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: in a way that would probably piss everyone off. So
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: what did you see?
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: Let's go into the ending.
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: Well, also, yeah, okay, well. So mine was she gets
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: out of the cave. She wakes up. She had gotten
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: unconscious at some point.
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: The fact that she gets out of the cave is
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: that's the ending.
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: She wakes up, sees this ray of light. It wakes
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: her up. That shot of her crawling up the mountain
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: of bones with the one stray piece of sunlight is, super.
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: Cool like that same tube that same penetrating.
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: Yeah light in this one.
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: Like it is a weird recurring theme that i'm like
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: isn't by accident like it just in that shot looks
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: amazing that was a really as does her hand coming
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: out of it.
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: Yes which i'll yeah so she crawls up she jams
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: her head out of there again very carrie is what
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: it reminded me of It's the ending of Carrie out
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: of the, yeah. So she bursts her hand out. She
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: gets out. She gets into the car. She drives the
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: car away, stops it on the side of the road,
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: freaking out. She throws up. The big truck goes by.
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: She comes back up and Juno's ghost is in the seat.
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: And then that's it. It cuts to black.
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: So wait, that's where the movie ends?
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: That's where it ended. And I was annoyed by it.
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: And so I looked up.
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: That is not the ending I had.
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: I know. And so I want to watch it.
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: I saw.
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: I want to look it up on YouTube.
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: It is one of those that also had occurred to
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: me as I was thinking about watching it this time.
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: I was like, I heard about this movie. I thought
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: it sounded really cool. But I heard about it after
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: it had already left theaters. So I saw it when
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: I saw it on DVD the first time, which also
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: I think is when he put together what he wanted
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: to be the ending. Because the way he originally wrote
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: it is the way it ends on the DVD. So
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: maybe since we need to discuss it, maybe we'll pause
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: for a second, just watch this, and we'll come back
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: and discuss with you guys since you probably watched it
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: on DVD. So which version, where did you watch it?
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: Was this like Amazon?
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: It was Amazon. I rented it.
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: Okay. Because I was like, I'm pretty sure when it
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: was on your list, I was like, I'm pretty sure
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: I have a copy of it. I remember buying it.
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: So I went and found mine.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: I was so annoyed with my ending. And then I
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: looked it up after and was like, oh, there's another one.
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: That's weird. That was probably better. I thought he would
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: have adjusted it so that it fit his ending and
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: all copies that went out there. So that's weird. Because yeah,
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: the version that.
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: The version that I, which is not even the way
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: he originally wanted it. The way he wrote it is
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: the way we're about to watch this ending right now.
- 1:30:29Speaker 11: So the other ending, it just ends right after she
- 1:30:41Speaker 11: sees her ghost friend and that's it.
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: That makes so much more sense, too.
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: That's why that's the real ending.
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: Update. The other ending was way better.
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: So we just watched the real ending, and that's the thing.
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: I didn't know they ever actually officially showed it that way.
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: He did test screens in the beginning, and I thought
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: that was the way, but I didn't realize it was
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: out there in any form. That's the only way I've
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: ever seen it was like that and the way that
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: makes sense in the overall again that's the way he
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: wrote it like when he when he was talking about
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: it i saw he's like he expected them to never
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: make it out that like she as our main character
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: was never supposed to make it out from the get-go
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: before he even like that was always the ending they
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: came up with that during the editing process the dream
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: sequence where she gets out of the mountain and runs
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: away and it goes to her. And all of that
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: was just a weird afterthought that they threw in that
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: then I guess was doing like a test run. And like,
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: to me, it feels like what a dumb American producer
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: would do. Like, it feels like if we took this
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: movie from another country and it ended the right way,
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: and then we went, Oh, except we're going to make
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: her get out and she gets away and it's fun.
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: And so I feel like that feels so fake. Which
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: is why, to me, when the light kicks on there,
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: everything feels like it is the dream sequence. And it
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: makes so much sense then bookending it with the whole
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: way through we've seen her and her daughter.
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. That's why the, yeah.
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: Yeah, that's why it makes sense to have it that way. So, yeah,
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: I can't imagine it. I'm sorry you had to watch
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: it that other way the first time.
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it made no sense, especially considering the whole theme
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: of the dreams that she's having and then she wakes
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: up and. Yeah, watching the actual ending now, I'm so
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: much happier.
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: That is the way Neil intended it.
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: Because the first one, it's like the movie is amazing.
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: The creatures are amazing. Those action scenes are amazing. All
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: of the scenes in the cave before the creatures get
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: there are amazing. And then you have this thing. And
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: then also, yeah, even if it had just ended with
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: her driving out, I would have been okay with but
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: then it's like she pops back up and then there's
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: a ghost but then it just ends right there it's
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: like we all know that she's been having hallucinations so
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: if you're gonna do that then you show what happens
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: when she wakes up from that jump scare because clearly
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: that's not real so it doesn't make any sense to
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: so I'm glad I watched the.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: Other one and it doesn't like it really doesn't make
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: like that is again the whole point of the movie
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: kind of because it isn't just the descent into the
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: cave it is her descent into madness. Like it is
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: literally by the end of it. Cause you don't really
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: get that until you get to the end where it's
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: just sort of her and Juno and you start seeing how,
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: and what she becomes a crazy killer, but like it
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: is because she's kind of losing it. And like, by
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: the time we get to this, it's like, she's been
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: having these visions the whole time, but in the end,
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: like she's just completely succumbed to the darkness and, And
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: like now it pans away, it zooms out and like
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: leaves her there in the darkness.
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: I mean, because that's the only possible, yeah, that's the
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: only possible solution. You're traveling in this cave undiscovered by
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: anyone else.
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: Again, that's why I feel like I'm, I can see
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: so many more conventional audiences wanting and like, yay, she
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: gets out. I'm like, even, I think even he said that,
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: the director talking about it, I was like, like, That's
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: almost the more cruel ending of like, okay, and she
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: gets out. Everyone she knows is dead.
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: And then what do you do?
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: She's responsible for some of them. Like everything is like.
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: Yeah, they're like, girls trip, get over the death of
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: your husband and daughter. And by the way, we're all
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: going to die.
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: So it's like all of that then is left to
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: weigh on her for the rest of her life. I'm like,
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: that is kind of a more mean spirited ending, but
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: it can seem more conventional. No, I wanted to get
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: away and escape. And I'm like, no. to me the
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: only way that it balances out and makes a great
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: story is the fact that she is just left in
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: there and she's left in the darkness and the creatures
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: are there and like whatever and again I love that
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: like we don't officially see it happen we don't know
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: does she does she just starve to death in that
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: little hole does she become a creature and join them
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: you hear the you hear the creatures but like and
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: we again we just see judo turn around to be
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: a badass and fight off 20 of them We don't
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: really know. You just kind of hear them all coming
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: after her, but hell, if you believe Descent 2, they
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: both survive. I don't understand that at all either. We're
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: not talking about the Descent 2. No, we're not, and
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: we're not going to. Unless you want to hear me trash.
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: I can't think about it.
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: Yeah, again, I love the way it leaves all of
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: them because they're both just kind of going out fighting
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: as badasses, and one of them is losing their mind,
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: and that's where it leaves there. That's where we came
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: into it with her. She was kind of already, by
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: the time we hit the credits, she's losing it. By
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: the time she wakes up in the hospital, which by
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: the way, another amazing sequence before we even hit the credits.
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: Running down the hallway with the lights is such a
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: great shot.
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: Is it Poltergeist 2 or 3 in the hospital?
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: It's so good. From that point on, we're just watching
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: her descent into madness. Of course you need that at
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: the end. The descent. The descent. thank you so obviously
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: we should watch the right movie and as we wrap
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: this up so is there any.
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: So much final thoughts oh my goodness so many thoughts
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: first of all i want to do like um episodes
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: like this all the time because that can be arranged
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: my very closest people don't like horror movies and i
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: love horror movies and so like i just want to
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: do this all the time we could talk about this
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: this is so much fun um thoughts on this i
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: love that it's a movie it's 13 years ago now.
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: That it's weird because it still seems like a recent
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: movie to me.
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: But yeah well and it gets like like i love
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: like reddit and so i go on their horror subreddit
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: and they have the whole list of like all the
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: movies that are voted the top and this one always
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: makes the top 10 and i'd never seen it before
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: and i was so happy to watch it because it
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: is really good and it's not the creepy cave creatures
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: in their design which is not at all and their
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: design and the cave creatures are very good like I'm
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: not saying it's not that but just the first two
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: thirds of it are just you with this group of
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: women in this cave and you don't have a way
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: out and just the way that they filmed it I
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: was stressed I was on the verge of a panic
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: attack the entire time like just like reminding myself to
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: breathe and sitting in the fetal position on the couch
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: like it So effective and fun, weirdly, like in the
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: way that horror movies should always be fun in a
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: way and not too dark. And when those creatures show
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: up and these women just are badasses and just start
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: fighting them and taking them down and it's like.
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: Ladies yeah by the time we get with just those
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: two left that last battle in the cave with all
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: of them is so.
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: Impressive it's so good like it's really one of my
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: top horror movies that i've seen or just top movies
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: because I feel like it doesn't even fall into a
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: certain genre it's just like nervousness being in a cage
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: it's five genres jammed together yeah it's so much fun
- 1:38:38Speaker 2: it's really good so if anyone hasn't watched it yet
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: the whole movie's been spoiled for you Sorry.
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: You should have listened at the beginning like I told you.
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: You should have not listened to this podcast. If you
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: have watched it, go watch it again. As we said,
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: it's a different experience.
- 1:38:55Speaker 9: It's October.
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: Or hopefully you saw the right ending.
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: It's a fun time. All these ladies are badass, especially
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: in 2006 when we didn't have that many horror movies
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: of just a group of women being badasses.
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: Even now, I can't think of anything like that.
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: That's an entire cast too. Once the husband dies- There
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: are no other.
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: Male characters ever. And I had moments of when they're
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: first together in that cabin of like, oh, this is
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: one of those stupid girls on vacation movies. And then
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: it's like, no, they're all experienced capers and climbers and badasses.
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: But even then, it doesn't get annoying. They still seem
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: like genuine, real people that I'm like, no, I could
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: be around. Where many horror movies, I'm like, I would kill.
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: All of you people.
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: But this... Again, they all feel like pretty well-rounded and
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: intelligent characters that you want to be invested in, and
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: you kind of get that.
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: You are, and it's so good. It's so fun. I
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: love the creatures. Fuck caves. Don't ever go in a
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: cave for any reason whatsoever. Why would you go in
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: a cave? Don't ever go in a cave.
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: We're going to put together a group trip.
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: I'm never. I will not.
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: There'll be like a blindfold. We'll be like, surprise trip.
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: That would be fun, actually. you're taking you to a
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: special location but yeah you're like why is it 50
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: degrees in here.
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: I don't i don't fuck with caves i don't fuck
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: with caves i don't fuck with the deep ocean i
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: don't fuck with space those are things we weren't meant
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: to experience damn it.
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: There goes that space.
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: So learn don't go to caves but it's it's a
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: fun movie it's a fun movie it's fun to look
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: at the Original ending versus alternate ending, I guess, because
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: I just watched the alternate one. It was way better
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: than the one that I saw.
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: Again, that's the one Neil originally wrote.
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: It's fun to see both of them and compare them.
- 1:40:48Speaker 2: I just have fun hanging out with you and talking
- 1:40:52Speaker 2: with you about movies.
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: Awesome. I'm glad you've come on board.
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: I hope we can do this in the future, and
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: I'm excited to see Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: We were discussing maybe putting that together, so... Possibly we
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: can do that.
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: And I want to do a whole show on women
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: in horror.
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: We're working on that as well. I thought this would
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: be a nice way to kind of grease the wheels there.
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: We could get it going when this is a whole
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: lot of women being badasses. So we can get to
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: that too. But I'm glad you really liked it too
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: because that is the other reason I was like, you
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: listed a bunch of them, a lot of them you
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: had seen, but I thought you said you hadn't seen.
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: I was like, okay, I want you to see this
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: one because I... It is one of those... It was
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: so good. I said this all the time on the show.
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: It's funny that when I say I love horror, I
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: always go to much older stuff. And even, again, the
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: 80s era. I'm always going to the original Halloween or
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: The Thing. And I'm like, I don't get further past
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: a lot of that. And I've watched a ton of
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: more modern ones, but it's rare that I watch it
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: and then immediately want to throw it up to the
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: top of my list. The Descent was one of those.
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: It's really good. It's one of the few post-2000s movies
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: that I put right at the top of at least
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: my horror movies, if not all movies. It's that damn good.
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: It's so good. If you haven't seen it, go watch it.
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: That's my advice. You should have already watched it.
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: Go watch it again. With the right ending. That's the key.
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: Put the subtitles on. I did that at a couple points.
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: Come over a few times.
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: I was like, wait, what did she say? Because it's
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: like the screeching is so loud and then the actual
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: whisper talking is quiet. Put on the subtitles.
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: Earlier on, I needed it because there's a little accent
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: going on. And I'm just like, what weird British-y thing
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: did she just say?
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: I expected them to be American. But yeah, go watch it.
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: Go watch it. Happy Halloween. All that.
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. Happy Halloween. Otherwise, that about does it.
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: We will return next time. Stay geeky. Thanks for listening.
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: Thank you. Cape creature.
- 1:43:31Speaker 9: Oh, let's get back to the cave. No other toll
- 1:43:35Speaker 9: is free and time to waste. Oh, let's get back
- 1:43:40Speaker 9: to the cave for a little while. Oh, for a
- 1:43:47Speaker 9: little while. Life on the.
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: Outside, life on the edge.
- 1:43:56Speaker 10: Pushing all the buttons and then driving into edge.
- 1:44:01Speaker 9: Somebody's taken from you time and time and time again.
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: Can't believe it's not the way you want it to be.
- 1:44:10Speaker 9: Oh, let's get back to the cake.
- 1:44:14Speaker 3: No, no, don't us, we had time to waste.
- 1:44:19Speaker 9: Oh, let's get back to the cave for a while.
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, for a while.
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: Somebody looking for you, somewhere you've seen a face.
- 1:44:35Speaker 9: Somehow I lose you, feel lost and out of place.
- 1:44:39Speaker 9: Too many wasted nights and way too many drunken days.
- 1:44:44Speaker 9: There's nothing left to make you burn and nothing left
- 1:44:48Speaker 9: to make you want to stay.
- 1:44:51Speaker 10: Oh!
- 1:45:17Speaker 9: Bye.
- 1:45:17Speaker 10: Bye.
- 1:45:41Speaker 9: I love you deep inside you Down where you were
- 1:45:45Speaker 9: before And when I find you I'll be wild and
- 1:45:48Speaker 9: knocking down your door.
- 1:45:51Speaker 10: I'll cry you're screaming from this endless and angry sea
- 1:45:54Speaker 10: You can't believe.
- 1:45:55Speaker 9: It's just the way you want it to be Oh,
- 1:46:01Speaker 9: let's get back to the game No one ever told
- 1:46:03Speaker 9: us we had time to waste. Oh, let's get back
- 1:46:08Speaker 9: to the case. For a little while.
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: For a little while. For a little while.
- 1:46:18Speaker 6: For a little while.
- 1:46:20Speaker 10: For a little while.
- 1:46:56Speaker 2: But really, if anyone has a good Wendigo horror movie.
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: I'm telling you, I've seen at least one straight... gvd
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: or something there was probably not again i haven't watched
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: it i just remember seeing because i think maybe they
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: even worked that into the title that's why i was
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: like i feel like i've seen it even like billed
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: as that recent.
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: The best one i've seen is that doug jones episode
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: i think it was fair itself that.
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: Was good like i yeah i do remember watching that one.
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: I love doug jones okay.
