Idaho’s wolf population is plummeting — down to 1,129 this year, a 106 drop from last year — thanks to aggressive hunting and trapping efforts aimed at shrinking numbers from 2020 onward. Once wiped out, wolves were reintroduced in the ‘90s and removed from endangered status, now managed by the state which also reports fewer livestock attacks. Officials are targeting a population of 500, using genetic data from harvested wolves for more accurate counts than old trail cameras.
