- 0:02Speaker 1: And we appreciate them for being here talking to Jim
- 0:05Speaker 1: Moore Junior. As the Huskies get set to take on
- 0:07Speaker 1: Central Connecticut. They'll do that at the rent on a
- 0:10Speaker 1: Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. We've been around what Labor Day,
- 0:15Speaker 1: I'm sorry. We've been around the offense a little bit
- 0:18Speaker 1: and talk to some skilled players, some offensive lineman, quarterbacks.
- 0:22Speaker 1: We haven't talked about defense, and defense is probably going
- 0:25Speaker 1: to be where you fans are going to have to.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Get educated because you're not going to recognize some of
- 0:30Speaker 2: these people.
- 0:31Speaker 1: But we've been watching him and obviously coach has been
- 0:33Speaker 1: watching him and recruiting him and has brought in I
- 0:36Speaker 1: think some experienced players and having seen them in action
- 0:40Speaker 1: in the scrimmage and then today, it feels like the
- 0:44Speaker 1: jump isn't going to be as big for them to
- 0:47Speaker 1: get to a level that your defense can be outstanding?
- 0:51Speaker 2: Is am I accurate with that? I hope you are.
- 0:55Speaker 3: There's a lot of new faces, you know, nine new starters,
- 0:58Speaker 3: and we're fortunate because we were able to do pretty
- 1:03Speaker 3: well in the portal. At least we anticipate we did
- 1:06Speaker 3: well in the portal. It still has to prove itself
- 1:08Speaker 3: out adding some guys that had played at this level
- 1:11Speaker 3: and played well at this level and big time football
- 1:14Speaker 3: power for guys. But you know, there's that kind of
- 1:18Speaker 3: that period of adjustment into our system and how we
- 1:22Speaker 3: do things that's been happening. And unfortunately, the last couple
- 1:25Speaker 3: of weeks, a couple of our key guys have been
- 1:27Speaker 3: out with injuries.
- 1:28Speaker 2: But they've played a lot of football.
- 1:30Speaker 3: These guys we brought in and they understand the game,
- 1:33Speaker 3: and they're smart, and they're conscientious and they're process oriented,
- 1:39Speaker 3: and I think that we have a chance to be
- 1:43Speaker 3: really good on defense. But you know, we'll see, we'll
- 1:46Speaker 3: see what happens. We needed some of these guys back
- 1:50Speaker 3: practicing and get them more assimilated into our system.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Your background is defense, over the years on the pros
- 1:57Speaker 1: and now here in college, you were the defensive coordinated
- 1:59Speaker 1: for a couple of years. Here is instinct for a
- 2:03Speaker 1: defensive player more important than communication or is it vice versa?
- 2:09Speaker 3: It's neither. I mean, it's both. There's so many things
- 2:12Speaker 3: that are equal. You know that one is not more
- 2:15Speaker 3: important than the other. A great defense is a defense
- 2:20Speaker 3: that communicates very very well, which means the players communicate
- 2:24Speaker 3: well amongst each other.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Is that pre snap or on, it's it's post, it's during.
- 2:30Speaker 3: I mean, you know, the communication is non stop on
- 2:34Speaker 3: a football field. You just can't hear it from the stands,
- 2:37Speaker 3: and especially on defense because every time an offensive player
- 2:41Speaker 3: moves it changes everything on defense, and it has to
- 2:44Speaker 3: be communicated. It has to be flawless and seamless, and
- 2:48Speaker 3: that takes time to develop, you know, to be instinctive
- 2:51Speaker 3: or not instinctive, to be commanding with the calls and
- 2:54Speaker 3: precise in the calls. It takes time to learn those things.
- 2:58Speaker 3: So when you're bringing a new group together important they
- 3:00Speaker 3: practice together. And so that's that's why there's a little
- 3:02Speaker 3: concern because some of these guys that are key pieces
- 3:05Speaker 3: have not been able to practice. But like I said,
- 3:07Speaker 3: they're experienced football players, so it doesn't take them as
- 3:10Speaker 3: long to catch you up. So, you know, communication effort,
- 3:17Speaker 3: you know, the way you finish the violence that you
- 3:19Speaker 3: play with your hands. You know, good feet stand square
- 3:23Speaker 3: being a great tackling defense. I'm gonna say it again,
- 3:25Speaker 3: violence because violence is a virtue on defense. You know,
- 3:28Speaker 3: that's something that you have to We're not talking about,
- 3:31Speaker 3: you know what type of violence I'm talking about we're
- 3:32Speaker 3: not trying to maim anybody, but you're trying to inflict
- 3:36Speaker 3: a little punishment on your opponent in this sport. So
- 3:39Speaker 3: those are the and then skill. You know, I want big, fast, mean, angry,
- 3:46Speaker 3: smart guys on defense.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Anybody out there want to get a uniform on listen.
- 3:53Speaker 2: That's that's what defense is, isn't it.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Yeah, like Mike, it's like Matt Brock says, you can't
- 3:59Speaker 3: play defense unless you're pissed off. You know, you should
- 4:02Speaker 3: get up every morning just angry about something if you
- 4:04Speaker 3: want to be a good defensive player. I mean, think
- 4:06Speaker 3: about Jack Lambert and Dick Buckets, those guys. I want
- 4:09Speaker 3: guys like that, Ronnie Lott, Give me Ronnie Lotts and
- 4:11Speaker 3: Jack Tatum's and those a guy, do you guys know
- 4:14Speaker 3: who those guys are?
- 4:15Speaker 2: Give me those? Yeah. I mean that's how you have
- 4:19Speaker 2: to play defense. You have to have a chip on
- 4:20Speaker 2: your shoulder, you have to have an edge. And I
- 4:22Speaker 2: think we've got some of those guys. You know, You've
- 4:24Speaker 2: got a linebacker from b YU.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Yeah, And we met him today after practice and he
- 4:34Speaker 1: just looks he's a grad level guy. He looks like
- 4:37Speaker 1: a football player he does. He's like a guy to
- 4:39Speaker 1: run you on the field. You want to run away
- 4:42Speaker 1: from him. Yeah, he's a great kid. And I'll tell
- 4:44Speaker 1: you the bonuses that his girlfriend was an All American
- 4:48Speaker 1: soccer player last year who also transferred to Yukon and
- 4:51Speaker 1: will be on our women's soccer team and is one
- 4:54Speaker 1: of the top defenders in the country. So we got
- 4:56Speaker 1: we got a nice bonus there. But yes, is a
- 4:58Speaker 1: really good player.
- 4:59Speaker 3: And Tie Kwan King from Temple has played a lot
- 5:01Speaker 3: of football. Brian Parham we brought in from University of Washington,
- 5:05Speaker 3: He's played a lot of football.
- 5:07Speaker 2: You know.
- 5:08Speaker 3: It's it's Our linebacking group is a really good group.
- 5:11Speaker 3: I mean there's six seven guys that I feel they
- 5:13Speaker 3: can all go in and play and play well for us.
- 5:16Speaker 1: In Matt Brock's defense, your defensive coordinator is the linebacking
- 5:20Speaker 1: position the most important, would you say.
- 5:25Speaker 2: You and these most not? There's not like it's hyperbole.
- 5:28Speaker 2: That's I know.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Drives me crazy, and that's when we're getting along.
- 5:35Speaker 2: They're all important.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Okay, they all have different levels of responsibility, but they
- 5:41Speaker 3: all are important, all different roles. But unless everyone's functioning
- 5:46Speaker 3: at a high level, on defense. It's hard to be
- 5:48Speaker 3: good on defense, you know. So there's no one that's
- 5:51Speaker 3: more important, or no position that's more important. There are
- 5:54Speaker 3: positions that demand different talents and skill sets and levels
- 5:59Speaker 3: of intelligence and size and speed. But you know, everybody
- 6:02Speaker 3: working together is another factor that makes a good defense.
- 6:06Speaker 3: No one's more important than than than the next guy.
- 6:08Speaker 1: All right, quick break, we're gonna talk about cornerbacks. That's
- 6:11Speaker 1: the toughest position.
- 6:12Speaker 2: That's the most important position.
- 6:14Speaker 1: That is it Thanks to Jim moruncs with us alight
