Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: My name's and Jacobs and I play guitar for the
- 0:03Speaker 1: band to treat.
- 0:03Speaker 2: You Dan, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:07Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, thanks for having me. I appreciate it, my pleasure, mate.
- 0:10Speaker 4: So that's why you return to Australia in July twenty
- 0:13Speaker 4: twenty five for run of dates with Memphis May Fire,
- 0:17Speaker 4: starting in Brisbane on July the night before, hitting Sydney
- 0:19Speaker 4: in Melbourne Adelaide and finishing in Perth on July fifteenth, Mate,
- 0:23Speaker 4: that's a pretty good double bill yourselves in Memphis May Fire.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it's exciting.
- 0:27Speaker 3: We've never been down that way with Memphis before so
- 0:31Speaker 3: and they've been friends with us for a long time.
- 0:33Speaker 3: We've done several tours with them before the year, so
- 0:35Speaker 3: it's alway fun to tour them, and it just seemed
- 0:37Speaker 3: like it made sense and also too to come down
- 0:39Speaker 3: and get to play the Curse and whatnot. And it's
- 0:40Speaker 3: entirety it's a you know, it's gonna be a good
- 0:43Speaker 3: time well.
- 0:44Speaker 4: And it's built us as a co headlining tool, mate,
- 0:46Speaker 4: So what does that actually mean? Does it mean you
- 0:48Speaker 4: alternate the last spot of the night or you got
- 0:50Speaker 4: the same same set length?
- 0:53Speaker 1: It's the same, I beat the same set length we play.
- 0:56Speaker 3: I think we're closing the shows every night, but it's
- 0:58Speaker 3: it's yeah, it's a co headliner.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Cool.
- 1:02Speaker 4: And as you say, you're going to be celebrating the
- 1:04Speaker 4: twentieth anniversary of your second album TOCUR, So does that
- 1:08Speaker 4: mean you're going to be playing the whole thing right
- 1:10Speaker 4: to back.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I'll be playing all that and maybe maybe
- 1:13Speaker 3: in some other treats as well while we're while we're there.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Well, how do you going to play in an album
- 1:18Speaker 2: front to back? Bright?
- 1:19Speaker 4: Like, when you write it, I can't imagine that you
- 1:21Speaker 4: ever thought you'd be playing the whole album one day?
- 1:23Speaker 2: So is it difficult to fit on like little nuances
- 1:26Speaker 2: and stuff? Isn't there?
- 1:28Speaker 3: As long as we have time, you know, like you know,
- 1:30Speaker 3: you can try to try to put breaks and pauses
- 1:32Speaker 3: in the right places where it doesn't feel awkward, or
- 1:35Speaker 3: some songs just need to kind of go right into
- 1:37Speaker 3: the next sort of thing, And that's just also just
- 1:40Speaker 3: one way to approach it.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Some bands don't even play them necessarily in order.
- 1:44Speaker 3: They might just kind of mix it up and play
- 1:46Speaker 3: them in a or even play it back to front
- 1:48Speaker 3: or something like that.
- 1:48Speaker 1: You know, start the last song worked the way forward,
- 1:51Speaker 1: you know.
- 1:51Speaker 3: But uh yeah, I mean we're gonna we're gonna come
- 1:54Speaker 3: and just play the album in its entirety, front to
- 1:56Speaker 3: back and.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Give it to you the way it was meant to be.
- 2:00Speaker 2: What are some of your memories of micing that album?
- 2:02Speaker 1: But oh man, I remember we recorded it or demoed it.
- 2:08Speaker 3: I should say we had the whole album completely written
- 2:11Speaker 3: and recorded in the order that you hear it on
- 2:13Speaker 3: the album now. I mean it was like we just
- 2:16Speaker 3: put the whole thing together and when we turned it
- 2:18Speaker 3: into the producer to be like, hey.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Like you know, is this cool, he was like, yeah,
- 2:21Speaker 1: let's just record this. It was.
- 2:23Speaker 3: It's actually pretty interesting how much the demos and the
- 2:26Speaker 3: recording or it's just all the same thing as opposed
- 2:28Speaker 3: to like chopping songs up or moving things around or
- 2:31Speaker 3: changing the order. But we demoed it the same way
- 2:34Speaker 3: it is on the record, which is kind of fun.
- 2:36Speaker 3: And we recorded it up in Canada on in an
- 2:40Speaker 3: area called Gipson on this island. Half of it was
- 2:43Speaker 3: done in the studio in Vancouver and which is called
- 2:48Speaker 3: Brian Adams Studio.
- 2:49Speaker 1: It's called the Warehouse. We did basically the repro.
- 2:52Speaker 3: There and then some drums, and then when we came
- 2:56Speaker 3: back when we were done at the end of it,
- 2:57Speaker 3: for a week, we did all the mixing there, but
- 2:58Speaker 3: majority of the two weeks of the recording, we're all
- 3:00Speaker 3: on this island where we were basically like locked there
- 3:05Speaker 3: to an extent, Like we didn't leave for two weeks,
- 3:07Speaker 3: so we didn't leave this dude's house. We just stayed
- 3:09Speaker 3: at his house and recorded for two weeks. We didn't
- 3:11Speaker 3: go any like bars or restaurants or anywhere. We just
- 3:15Speaker 3: stayed at this dude's house in the woods in like
- 3:16Speaker 3: the middle of nowhere for two weeks. And it was
- 3:18Speaker 3: kind of making us go crazy a little bit, and
- 3:20Speaker 3: I think that kind of played into the vibe of
- 3:21Speaker 3: the album a little bit.
- 3:23Speaker 2: I look it back, would you consider it a significant
- 3:26Speaker 2: album that's his career.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I'd say that was the first album
- 3:30Speaker 3: to kind of really put us on the map. I
- 3:32Speaker 3: mean our first record before that, you know, Suicide Notes
- 3:35Speaker 3: and Butterify Kisses. We had our song Lipclocks in Black and
- 3:37Speaker 3: the Theft that kind of made some waves, but it
- 3:39Speaker 3: wasn't until we released Right Side of the Bed and
- 3:41Speaker 3: the Curse that like everything started to change and we
- 3:44Speaker 3: could feel like our presence in the industry kind of
- 3:48Speaker 3: escalating quickly. Yeah, so it's I mean it's at the time,
- 3:51Speaker 3: it's hard to know where it's really going as far
- 3:53Speaker 3: as long term, but you know, in the moment, you
- 3:56Speaker 3: could definitely feel something special was happening and.
- 3:59Speaker 2: You released album since then might so how would you say.
- 4:02Speaker 4: That, I try your sound is growing or change either
- 4:05Speaker 4: of those records.
- 4:08Speaker 1: There's I mean, I have several different ways I like
- 4:10Speaker 1: to look at.
- 4:10Speaker 3: I mean, one is, you know, every producer you work with,
- 4:14Speaker 3: you you know, you get a new experience and you
- 4:16Speaker 3: learn things tricks and and whatnot. And as well as
- 4:20Speaker 3: just touring with different bands and traveling, there's so much
- 4:23Speaker 3: that goes into your your own evolution as a songwriter
- 4:26Speaker 3: and as a band member that you that goes along
- 4:29Speaker 3: the way. So everything every time you hear another record,
- 4:32Speaker 3: it's it's been influenced by even more things, uh for us,
- 4:36Speaker 3: So it gives us more kind of vocabulary as far
- 4:39Speaker 3: as you know, effects or the way we approach writing
- 4:42Speaker 3: or I don't know, just the overall sound goes even
- 4:47Speaker 3: doing stuff as far as you know a tray, you
- 4:49Speaker 3: sound has so many different kind of arms to it.
- 4:52Speaker 3: There's heavier side of us, there's softer sides of us.
- 4:55Speaker 3: There's punk sides, there's more hardcore sides, more metallic sides,
- 4:58Speaker 3: And I feel like with every record we kind of
- 5:01Speaker 3: lean into one or the other, sometimes a little bit more. Like,
- 5:05Speaker 3: for instance, we just did a thing called the Panoya Sessions,
- 5:07Speaker 3: which is a you know, I don't want to say
- 5:09Speaker 3: it's an acoustic record. It's like a reimagined thing, but
- 5:11Speaker 3: it's it's kind of showcasing the softer side of our band,
- 5:14Speaker 3: which has always been an element that we've always had,
- 5:17Speaker 3: and this doing stuff like the Curse kind of focuses
- 5:21Speaker 3: a little bit more on the heavier side of our band.
- 5:24Speaker 4: I was actually going to bring up the Paranoya Sessions,
- 5:27Speaker 4: which just came out recently, like it's songs of your
- 5:31Speaker 4: own revisited and reimagine and chew covers on there. It
- 5:34Speaker 4: is an interesting idea because, as you say, you stripped
- 5:36Speaker 4: the songs back a little bit late. But where did
- 5:38Speaker 4: the idea for that come from?
- 5:41Speaker 1: Actually it came from our VIP meet and greets.
- 5:44Speaker 3: We were offering trying to find, you know, somebod who
- 5:48Speaker 3: can offer to our VAP experience at the time that
- 5:50Speaker 3: was just a little bit more elevated and wanted to
- 5:52Speaker 3: give people their money's worth and and get something that
- 5:54Speaker 3: was unique and that you couldn't get at our main show.
- 5:59Speaker 3: So we're like, why don't we just down a couple
- 6:00Speaker 3: of songs and do them acoustically and it could be
- 6:03Speaker 3: fun just kind of like just do a different spin
- 6:05Speaker 3: on it, make them almost feel different, you know, like
- 6:07Speaker 3: a totally different song, but at the same time, you know,
- 6:10Speaker 3: relatable enough for you know, it is the song that
- 6:12Speaker 3: we're playing. So he's did this, and the reaction we
- 6:15Speaker 3: were getting was just was really really well where everyone was.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Like, man, this is awesome. I didn't know you guys
- 6:20Speaker 1: could do this.
- 6:21Speaker 3: You guys should put something out like this where oh
- 6:24Speaker 3: maybe maybe we will. And after getting that response enough,
- 6:27Speaker 3: we're like, okay, you know, let's let's just have some
- 6:29Speaker 3: fun with this and put this out just as like
- 6:31Speaker 3: a fun project, you know, not necessarily like a this
- 6:35Speaker 3: is the new direction of the band or anything like that,
- 6:37Speaker 3: or we're trying to become some you know, I don't know,
- 6:40Speaker 3: super chill loungee band or anything like that. But it
- 6:42Speaker 3: was it was more just like, let's just do something
- 6:44Speaker 3: fun that kind of lays off of a side of
- 6:46Speaker 3: us that.
- 6:47Speaker 1: A lot of people don't get to see.
- 6:49Speaker 2: And what was your selection process for songs on that?
- 6:51Speaker 4: Like I kind of imagine that every song you've done
- 6:54Speaker 4: would fit that treatment.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it was.
- 6:57Speaker 3: I mean some of them are you know, singles that
- 6:59Speaker 3: were just like kind of bigger songs throughout our career
- 7:01Speaker 3: that even just the structurally or the melodies and stuff,
- 7:05Speaker 3: felt like we could really convert them over and do
- 7:08Speaker 3: a different style, you know, a lot easier to where
- 7:11Speaker 3: it would translate and make sense.
- 7:14Speaker 1: You know.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Even picking uh, you know, even like the cover songs
- 7:17Speaker 3: and whatnot, we wanted to both of those because because
- 7:20Speaker 3: the record has this kind of somber feel to it,
- 7:23Speaker 3: we chose both, you know, an Audio Slave song and
- 7:26Speaker 3: also a Tom Petty song, both artists that have passed away,
- 7:31Speaker 3: or Chris Cornell in particular, and we wanted the songs
- 7:34Speaker 3: to kind of be a nod to them, and also
- 7:36Speaker 3: we wanted you to be able to feel the loss
- 7:38Speaker 3: of them in the songs, like feel that they're you know,
- 7:42Speaker 3: we wanted them to feel kind of slower and sad
- 7:44Speaker 3: in a way. So that was kind of the approach
- 7:47Speaker 3: to those two songs, and.
- 7:49Speaker 1: They sound beautiful like that.
- 7:51Speaker 3: I mean, it's just it's just like a like it
- 7:53Speaker 3: it feels appropriate given you know, the type of music
- 7:57Speaker 3: that they were doing, as well as you know, them
- 7:59Speaker 3: not being here anymore. Yeah, but yeah, everything else is
- 8:03Speaker 3: just songs and you're just whatever kind of felt good,
- 8:05Speaker 3: where like this song feels good. And also just having
- 8:08Speaker 3: a variety across you know, most of our records to
- 8:10Speaker 3: really kind of give people a nice career spanning taste
- 8:13Speaker 3: of things.
- 8:14Speaker 4: And then did fans respond to it the way you
- 8:16Speaker 4: thought they would or I hope they would?
- 8:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you get you get you're like like
- 8:21Speaker 3: anything you put out you're gonna have. You know, half
- 8:22Speaker 3: people are gonna be like this is the greatest thing ever,
- 8:24Speaker 3: and then you have other half people are like, you
- 8:26Speaker 3: guys are pussies?
- 8:27Speaker 1: What happened?
- 8:28Speaker 3: This isn't this isn't this isn't the a train you
- 8:30Speaker 3: I know, But it's like it's not supposed to be
- 8:32Speaker 3: like that's not what it is. It's it's it's not
- 8:34Speaker 3: about us, like like like I said, we're not trying
- 8:36Speaker 3: to like become that or anything. It was just like
- 8:38Speaker 3: a fun thing to do because you know it's it
- 8:41Speaker 3: is it, you know it is a part of us.
- 8:44Speaker 4: I guess in one way or another before I let
- 8:47Speaker 4: you go, mate, We've got a new segment called photo Bomb,
- 8:50Speaker 4: where basically I troll through your social media before I
- 8:52Speaker 4: chat with you.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Pick you out a couple of fighter all right.
- 8:56Speaker 4: The first one I've found is this one, like, I'm
- 9:02Speaker 4: not sure if you guys are actually enjoying itselves, having fun,
- 9:07Speaker 4: if you're in pain.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Oh yeah, this is I believe this is might even
- 9:10Speaker 3: be in aus Australia.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Honest, I got green hair or billow share. When was this?
- 9:19Speaker 3: This is well, this is on our last run of touring,
- 9:21Speaker 3: so it might be. Maybe it wasn't Australia in Australia,
- 9:22Speaker 3: it's in Europe UK. But we uh we we like
- 9:26Speaker 3: to have a good time all the time, and this
- 9:28Speaker 3: is a you know, this is us. You know, a
- 9:31Speaker 3: few drinks deep and a few songs in and we
- 9:34Speaker 3: start getting extra friendly.
- 9:36Speaker 2: You look like you know, capra shaw I at a lot.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Of no, not one bit.
- 9:42Speaker 4: And the other one I've found is this fun. I
- 9:45Speaker 4: want to know what's going on here. It looks like
- 9:47Speaker 4: I don't even know what it looks like.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Okay, so this is some sort of pre show. We're
- 9:54Speaker 3: singing harmonies right now. Yeah, we have a we have
- 9:58Speaker 3: a thing that we do the called teer jerkers. It's
- 10:01Speaker 3: actually something that we learned from the good Charlotte guys
- 10:04Speaker 3: years ago, back in like I mean like twenty years
- 10:06Speaker 3: ago and like warped Tour kind of thing. And it's
- 10:09Speaker 3: a it's a thing called it's basically just a small
- 10:12Speaker 3: shot and what we do if we want to, you know,
- 10:16Speaker 3: initiate a teer jerker before we're playing, someone will just
- 10:19Speaker 3: go tea.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Or any in any k tea or whatever it may be.
- 10:25Speaker 3: And as soon as somebody hears that, anybody that wants
- 10:27Speaker 3: a shot has to jump in with a harmony.
- 10:29Speaker 1: So we eventually ends up the thing.
- 10:31Speaker 3: We're all singing these harmonized you know, the four or
- 10:35Speaker 3: five six parts, spending how many people want to get
- 10:37Speaker 3: in harmonies, which then you pour shots for all those
- 10:40Speaker 3: people and do teer jerkers.
- 10:42Speaker 1: That's that's super.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Fun alright, By any any messages Perstryan fans before you
- 10:49Speaker 4: come out.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Yeah, we we always love seeing you guys and coming
- 10:53Speaker 3: out and playing for everyone it's it's one of the
- 10:56Speaker 3: funnest places to play in the world and one of
- 10:58Speaker 3: the best countries to visit in jen as a getting
- 11:01Speaker 3: to be a tourist on our tourist side of being
- 11:03Speaker 3: a band, So we're excited and appreciate everyone you know
- 11:06Speaker 3: who's stuck around for twenty five years of our band's
- 11:09Speaker 3: career and ready to get some more of it.
