- 0:12Speaker 1: Happy Monday, everybody! Welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show. Hopefully you.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Had a wonderful weekend.
- 0:26Speaker 3: No reason not to.
- 0:37Speaker 4: Great weather, great football, interesting storylines unfolding in the sports
- 0:43Speaker 4: landscape of our lovely home state.
- 0:45Speaker 3: A full slate of NFL games this.
- 0:47Speaker 4: Weekend, college football, a real Saturday night, night game, Rice
- 0:55Speaker 4: Eccles Stadium. blowout win over Arkansas. Let's go, baby. The
- 1:01Speaker 4: phone lines are open. The text line is open. We
- 1:03Speaker 4: want to hear from you. 877-353-0700. What was your favorite thing?
- 1:10Speaker 3: What was maybe your least favorite thing? We still have
- 1:12Speaker 3: to nitpick. Okay.
- 1:14Speaker 4: You can't just blindly jump on the bandwagon. Well, we're
- 1:19Speaker 4: all on the bandwagon already. You can't just blindly steer
- 1:21Speaker 4: the bandwagon and not expect that there's going to be
- 1:24Speaker 4: a growing pain here or there, but so far so good.
- 1:26Speaker 4: 43 to 10. And really it was 43 to three.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Okay. 10 was against the backups.
- 1:33Speaker 4: That second Arkansas Razorback scored and come until late in
- 1:36Speaker 4: the fourth quarter after they put together like an eight
- 1:39Speaker 4: minute scoring drive scoring with a field goal that is
- 1:44Speaker 4: in the first quarter. And after that, it was all Utah.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Devin damp here, 18 to 24, 261 yards. Two touchdowns
- 1:55Speaker 4: through the air. He did throw the interception, got hit
- 1:58Speaker 4: while he was throwing, and ball sailed over the middle
- 2:02Speaker 4: a little bit.
- 2:02Speaker 3: You don't ever love to see that.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Dampier added another two scores on the ground, so responsible
- 2:10Speaker 4: for four touchdowns on the day. 11 carries for 50 yards.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Way Sean Parker, another spectacular day in.
- 2:18Speaker 3: His own right. 10 carries, 53 yards, and he is.
- 2:23Speaker 4: He is your best pass catcher apparently as well, because
- 2:27Speaker 4: for the second game in a row, he did things
- 2:30Speaker 4: through the air, five catches, 65 yards and a touchdown.
- 2:36Speaker 4: I'm going to jump the line here and tell you
- 2:38Speaker 4: that my favorite thing about the Utah wind against Arkansas
- 2:43Speaker 4: is Mac G who we caught up with last week
- 2:46Speaker 4: in coordinator's corner. You can find Kevin McGiven's conversation, Colton
- 2:49Speaker 4: Swan's conversation here.
- 2:51Speaker 3: On the Sean O'Connell show.
- 2:52Speaker 4: You can find those things on the archives or in
- 2:56Speaker 4: the archives at ESPN 700 sports.com or on the ESPN
- 3:00Speaker 4: 700 app. And you will hear me talking to Kevin
- 3:04Speaker 4: McGiven and asking him after the Idaho game, you know,
- 3:08Speaker 4: how deep in the bag did you go? Mac G
- 3:11Speaker 4: how creative was that? in the grand scheme of how
- 3:15Speaker 4: creative you can be with this offense. And we saw again,
- 3:18Speaker 4: a Utah football offense doing things that are just outlandish
- 3:24Speaker 4: that are unorthodox, that are unique, that, that other teams
- 3:29Speaker 4: in the country just are not going to do or
- 3:32Speaker 4: not capable of doing right now because of personnel and
- 3:34Speaker 4: whatever else. And you're doing it in games. You don't
- 3:39Speaker 4: even have to do it. So the best stuff, right?
- 3:43Speaker 4: He's saving the best stuff, but he's giving every team
- 3:46Speaker 4: that Utah plays Utah state, Kansas and beyond. He's giving
- 3:51Speaker 4: these teams something to think about. He's giving these teams
- 3:54Speaker 4: something to wonder about. He's giving these teams something to
- 3:57Speaker 4: stay up at night and ponder by.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Okay, what is, what do we do?
- 4:01Speaker 4: What do we even call a personnel grouping? If you know,
- 4:06Speaker 4: if it's a, if it's 11 or 12 personnel, you're
- 4:09Speaker 4: counting running backs and tight ends in the formation. What
- 4:14Speaker 4: number do you have to give it if there's two quarterbacks?
- 4:20Speaker 5: 877-353-0700.
- 4:20Speaker 4: That's actually a genuine question that I have.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Any of you high.
- 4:28Speaker 4: School coaches, college coaches, pro coaches out there, what do
- 4:33Speaker 4: you call that when you're scheming against it?
- 4:35Speaker 1: All right.
- 4:36Speaker 3: All right. They're out there in 12 personnel. Give me cowboy, cowboy, cowboy.
- 4:40Speaker 3: All right. We need nickel, nickel, nickel, nickel.
- 4:42Speaker 4: When you're the defensive coordinator and a team comes out
- 4:45Speaker 4: with two quarterbacks on the field, what do you.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Call that personnel grouping? What does it tell you that
- 4:50Speaker 3: you have to do? That's what I love.
- 4:53Speaker 4: That's my favorite thing right now about this Utah football team.
- 4:58Speaker 4: You got good play from the offensive and defensive lines.
- 5:02Speaker 4: You are continuing with the rotation and the figuring out things.
- 5:07Speaker 4: We did not see Ike Garcia in the game the
- 5:10Speaker 4: way that I thought we would. Cedric Jefferson is holding
- 5:13Speaker 4: it down on the right tackle spot very well. Zaraway
- 5:15Speaker 4: Williams is doing a good job out at the left
- 5:17Speaker 4: tackle spot. I told you heading into the game against
- 5:20Speaker 4: Arkansas that even though the team, the team itself, even
- 5:26Speaker 4: though Arkansas is a squad, not that great. I told you,
- 5:31Speaker 4: you probably have to worry a little bit about at
- 5:35Speaker 4: least one or two guys on that, on that team,
- 5:37Speaker 4: Morgan Scali. He pointed out Steven souls, Jr. Who is
- 5:42Speaker 4: an edge rusher for them. He's built like a linebacker.
- 5:47Speaker 4: He's a speed edge rusher.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Okay.
- 5:50Speaker 4: He's about 240 pounds. He's about 6'2. He's an athlete
- 5:53Speaker 4: out at the edge, number 35. Morgan Scali had him highlighted.
- 5:58Speaker 4: That's a guy who's going to be playing on Sundays, which,
- 6:00Speaker 4: of course, will be determined at a later date. Quincy
- 6:03Speaker 4: Rhodes Jr. is the guy that I was talking about,
- 6:06Speaker 4: number 97. He came into the season less than 100%
- 6:10Speaker 4: healthy against North Alabama.
- 6:12Speaker 3: He played like he was healthy. against the University of Utah.
- 6:17Speaker 4: When I say like he was healthy, I mean he
- 6:19Speaker 4: played a snap count indicative of someone who is more
- 6:22Speaker 4: close to full health against the University of Utah. And
- 6:25Speaker 4: credit to this offensive line, neither of those guys did
- 6:28Speaker 4: jack you know what. Neither of those guys made a
- 6:33Speaker 4: play that really.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Amounted to anything. Quincy Rhodes Jr. had one tackle. Steven
- 6:43Speaker 3: Soles Jr. had one tackle.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Arguably, the two best players on their front and maybe
- 6:49Speaker 4: even on their entire defense didn't do anything. Joker Johnson
- 6:54Speaker 4: ended up being, I think, their most impressive player on
- 6:56Speaker 4: the day. Defensive back out of Hammond, Louisiana. He probably
- 7:02Speaker 4: belongs somewhere on the ESPN all-name team, on the college
- 7:08Speaker 4: football all-name team alongside Rabbit Evans and company. But Arkansas
- 7:14Speaker 4: didn't do anything. Utah dominated this game the same way
- 7:19Speaker 4: they dominated the Idaho game. In some ways, it was
- 7:22Speaker 4: a cleaner, more impressive performance than the one that you
- 7:26Speaker 4: had against Idaho. And you were doing it against guys
- 7:29Speaker 4: from that sec talent pool. The must was chanting at
- 7:34Speaker 4: the end of the game sec. And I was like,
- 7:36Speaker 4: all right, all right, calm down. We love you must,
- 7:38Speaker 4: but calm down. Arkansas is a terrible representative of what
- 7:42Speaker 4: sec squads are actually going to look like this year.
- 7:45Speaker 4: But at the end of the day, Utah bent a
- 7:48Speaker 4: little bit on that first defensive drive. Colton Swan then
- 7:52Speaker 4: got things settled down, and you dominated this game from
- 7:58Speaker 4: eight minutes into the first quarter all the way until
- 8:00Speaker 4: about six minutes left in the fourth quarter. It was
- 8:04Speaker 4: nothing but Utes. Well coached, well executed. physicality fun. I mean,
- 8:12Speaker 4: you could tell how much fun the guys are having
- 8:14Speaker 4: out there and that's not even what it's about. We
- 8:16Speaker 4: wish it's all it was about. The fans were certainly
- 8:19Speaker 4: having a great time. Halftime was wonderful. Eric Weddle being
- 8:22Speaker 4: inducted into the ring of honor is great to see
- 8:24Speaker 4: our guy. Great to see the whole family got a
- 8:27Speaker 4: chance to talk to his wife and got a chance
- 8:30Speaker 4: to say hello to Weddle. The younger gauge was in
- 8:34Speaker 4: the building and on a recruiting visit. really he was
- 8:39Speaker 4: in the, he was in the building to be there
- 8:41Speaker 4: to support his dad because he was not doing the
- 8:44Speaker 4: recruit thing that, you know, pregame, everyone goes down on
- 8:48Speaker 4: the sidelines, stands around the kind of support staff, the GM,
- 8:53Speaker 4: all these people come over, they talk to you. Well,
- 8:56Speaker 4: For those who are interested, Gage Weddle was not in
- 8:58Speaker 4: that scrum. He was not in that mix. He was
- 9:00Speaker 4: not doing that. Now, I think part of it is
- 9:02Speaker 4: because there's no novelty. It's not exotic for him to
- 9:05Speaker 4: be on a sideline where some of these guys, it's
- 9:08Speaker 4: a little bit more of a privilege. I mean, Gage
- 9:11Speaker 4: has grown up on college football and NFL sidelines.
- 9:15Speaker 3: He's had access to the Utah football.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Sideline basically whenever he wants it, whenever they're in town
- 9:20Speaker 4: for his whole life.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Tell you who was it.
- 9:25Speaker 4: My guy, I saw my guy, Ty Sparrow, the father
- 9:28Speaker 4: of Bodie Sparrow, the number one recruit in the state
- 9:30Speaker 4: of Utah, who's a commit to Oklahoma.
- 9:32Speaker 3: They were at the building. They were on the sideline.
- 9:35Speaker 4: I'm not trying to suggest that it actually means anything,
- 9:37Speaker 4: but Utah trying to stay in the mix there, despite
- 9:40Speaker 4: a strong verbal commitment from Bodie Sparrow to the Oklahoma Sooners.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Look, Oklahoma, they lost.
- 9:47Speaker 6: All right.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Oklahoma lost to Michigan. Utah won.
- 9:52Speaker 4: According to my math, that means that the best player
- 9:54Speaker 4: in the state should come to the University of Utah.
- 9:57Speaker 3: I don't know if that's exactly how it worked. it worked. 877-353-0700.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Tell me how you feel.
- 10:03Speaker 4: Favorite thing you saw in the game and the least
- 10:05Speaker 4: favorite thing that you saw in the game. I'm going
- 10:07Speaker 4: to jump the line again. I'm going to tell you
- 10:09Speaker 4: my least favorite thing about what I've seen now through
- 10:11Speaker 4: two games for the University of Utah. You ended up
- 10:17Speaker 4: with four sacks in this game, so that's a good thing.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Nice to see you put up some numbers there.
- 10:25Speaker 3: The problem is that two of those sacks were in
- 10:28Speaker 3: mop-up time.
- 10:29Speaker 4: You could make a case that John New Halls was
- 10:31Speaker 4: borderline in mop-up time also. So really it was Jaimo
- 10:34Speaker 4: who had an unbelievable game with his spin move interior
- 10:39Speaker 4: pass rush sack early in the game in the second
- 10:41Speaker 4: quarter that.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Kind of like planted the flag for sack Lake city.
- 10:49Speaker 4: The thing that I don't like the nitpicking thing for me,
- 10:52Speaker 4: and we're going to be overwhelmingly positive today because I
- 10:55Speaker 4: want to make sure you all know that I know
- 10:57Speaker 4: this was an overwhelmingly positive outcome. This was a great
- 11:00Speaker 4: game for the university of Utah. It was an excellent
- 11:02Speaker 4: step forward. It was moving at the right pace, in
- 11:05Speaker 4: my opinion, and it's a confidence builder, but We are
- 11:12Speaker 4: now two games in, and there's no defensive end. There's
- 11:16Speaker 4: no edge rusher with a sack for this Utah football.
- 11:25Speaker 5: Team.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Twice now, we've seen Lance Holtzclaw almost, but you don't
- 11:30Speaker 4: get almost stats. I guess that's not true. You do
- 11:33Speaker 4: get almost stats. They're called QB hurries. And I actually,
- 11:39Speaker 4: when he was... he had exited the building. He, he
- 11:43Speaker 4: was walking on fourth South with his family post game.
- 11:48Speaker 4: And I, you know, he was lamenting how close he
- 11:51Speaker 4: was when he, he executed his own spin move. And
- 11:55Speaker 4: then what, you know, didn't quite gather himself and finish
- 11:58Speaker 4: the play and make the tackle.
- 12:01Speaker 3: That was my least favorite thing.
- 12:03Speaker 4: Now, two weeks in a row, you don't have any
- 12:07Speaker 4: defensive ends with sacks. And I want this pass rushing squad.
- 12:11Speaker 4: I want sack Lake city to be sack Lake city.
- 12:14Speaker 4: And you're not going to be, if your defensive ends starts,
- 12:17Speaker 4: don't start piling up the, the pass rushing stats. That's my, again,
- 12:24Speaker 4: it's a nitpick, but right now, Nate Tailman's got a sack.
- 12:28Speaker 4: Carson Kalfusi interior D lineman's.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Got a sack.
- 12:31Speaker 4: Jai Mo's got a sack. Elijah Ellis has a sack. John,
- 12:34Speaker 4: who Hall's got a sack.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Ethan day. I need you, bud.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Paul Fitzgerald, cash, Dylan, Lance holds claw.
- 12:44Speaker 3: We need sacks out of you.
- 12:46Speaker 4: And I know we're only two games in and hopefully
- 12:49Speaker 4: that'll come, but I'm answering my own question.
- 12:53Speaker 3: That was my least favorite thing about this game.
- 12:55Speaker 4: I thought there were opportunities for that position group to,
- 13:00Speaker 4: to start piling up their own stats. 877-353-0700 on the
- 13:05Speaker 4: text line or the phone lines.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Who's calling? We have Mike from Harriman. That's James, by
- 13:11Speaker 3: the way, behind the glass. Mike from Harriman, how are you?
- 13:15Speaker 7: I'm good. How are you?
- 13:16Speaker 3: I'm great. Tell me what you think.
- 13:19Speaker 7: So, first, what I like is Ficklin's an absolutely great passer.
- 13:27Speaker 7: I hope Utah holds on to him as we go
- 13:30Speaker 7: forward because I think he's a really, really strong passer
- 13:34Speaker 7: and a great runner. It's not what I don't like.
- 13:39Speaker 7: It's what I have a question about our ability to
- 13:42Speaker 7: establish the run with a running back in like Parker
- 13:48Speaker 7: running the ball. Maybe they're just not giving it to
- 13:51Speaker 7: him enough. 51 yards seemed a little light to me.
- 13:55Speaker 7: Comment on that if you would.
- 13:59Speaker 3: I understand what you're thinking. I understand how you feel.
- 14:01Speaker 4: I want you, instead of looking at his total yards
- 14:04Speaker 4: in a game, to look at his average. His rushing
- 14:07Speaker 4: average is going to be something because the multiplicity of
- 14:11Speaker 4: this offensive playbook... Kevin McGibbon is not the dude who says,
- 14:16Speaker 4: all right, three yards in the cloud of dust, three
- 14:18Speaker 4: yards in the cloud of dust, three yards in the
- 14:20Speaker 4: cloud of dust. It's just not going to be the thing.
- 14:22Speaker 4: It's going to be unorthodox. It's not what Utah fans
- 14:25Speaker 4: are accustomed to seeing. Now, I think it's unconventional for
- 14:31Speaker 4: Utah in a way that we're all going to grow
- 14:32Speaker 4: to really love and like. Way Sean Parker so far
- 14:36Speaker 4: on the season is still averaging 5.6 yards a carry,
- 14:39Speaker 4: which is right in that same category he was at
- 14:41Speaker 4: last year. 22 carries, 124 yards, three touchdowns, 5.6 yards
- 14:47Speaker 4: per carry. He's also been remarkably active in the passing game.
- 14:51Speaker 4: He's already got 22 catches. Oh, excuse me. He's got
- 14:54Speaker 4: eight catches, 22 rushes. He's got eight catches for 88 yards.
- 14:57Speaker 8: So he's.
- 14:59Speaker 4: Way Sean Parker is giving you almost six yards every
- 15:02Speaker 4: time he runs the ball and he's giving you an
- 15:05Speaker 4: average of first down yardage. Every time he catches a pass,
- 15:08Speaker 4: he's got an even split of three rushing touchdowns and
- 15:11Speaker 4: three passing touchdowns. It doesn't look the way we're used
- 15:15Speaker 4: to having it look. but it is production. And I
- 15:19Speaker 4: think it's still okay to question whether or not this
- 15:23Speaker 4: offensive line is going to be able to pin its
- 15:26Speaker 4: ears back and run just like a traditional power, a
- 15:28Speaker 4: traditional counter, a traditional dive, even a zone read, and
- 15:33Speaker 4: get the push that they need and make sure that
- 15:36Speaker 4: you can actually move the ball and run four-minute offense
- 15:41Speaker 4: and gobble up clock if you're trying to milk a
- 15:43Speaker 4: lead or things like that. You have not been put
- 15:46Speaker 4: in that situation as of yet, but when you're running
- 15:49Speaker 4: the football, you're running it to a nice, healthy average.
- 15:52Speaker 4: And that I think should be enough for us so far.
- 15:56Speaker 4: It's a great question, Mike. It's a fair question.
- 15:59Speaker 3: I'll see.
- 16:00Speaker 9: Cause that's one of the things I think all of
- 16:02Speaker 9: us are like, we know how much it matters to
- 16:05Speaker 9: way Sean Parker to get over the thousand yard mark.
- 16:08Speaker 9: And it matters historically because, It's like having your best
- 16:12Speaker 9: player be a 300 hitter in baseball. If you're under 300,
- 16:16Speaker 9: if you're 280, it's not bad. It feels much better
- 16:20Speaker 9: to have your best player hit over 300. Running back,
- 16:23Speaker 9: if you get 980, 960 in a season, that's really good.
- 16:28Speaker 9: It feels way better if you've got a one in
- 16:30Speaker 9: front of it. I think that's top of mind for everybody.
- 16:33Speaker 9: He hasn't had a ton of rushing yards the first
- 16:35Speaker 9: couple games.
- 16:36Speaker 4: Way Sean might not get 1,000 yards rushing this season,
- 16:39Speaker 4: but guess what? Way Sean might end up being like
- 16:43Speaker 4: an eight 50 rusher and a six 50 pass receiver.
- 16:47Speaker 4: And that is more impactful for Utah winning football games.
- 16:51Speaker 4: I would rather have way Sean Parker rush for 750
- 16:55Speaker 4: yards and have Utah be a 10 win team than
- 16:58Speaker 4: have him run for a thousand yards and have Utah
- 17:01Speaker 4: be a nine win team. And I think that that's Kevin.
- 17:04Speaker 4: I mean, I don't think I know that's Kevin McGiven's priority.
- 17:07Speaker 4: Way Sean has zero room for, And he's not doing this.
- 17:12Speaker 4: This is us doing it. Way Sean has zero room
- 17:14Speaker 4: to say, oh, no, I don't like the way that
- 17:16Speaker 4: I'm being used right now. Way Sean gets the ball
- 17:20Speaker 4: and way Sean is a playmaker in both the pass
- 17:23Speaker 4: and the run. There will be a time this season
- 17:27Speaker 4: where you have to run four minute offense. You have
- 17:29Speaker 4: to run the ball. where maybe Devin is a little
- 17:33Speaker 4: bit more hobbled or a little bit banged up from
- 17:36Speaker 4: excessive contact. Cause he's been getting hit a lot, right?
- 17:39Speaker 4: Or maybe you don't want to run bird too much
- 17:41Speaker 4: or whatever reason where way Sean, they're going to be like, dude,
- 17:43Speaker 4: you got to run.
- 17:44Speaker 3: We need to run, run, run. You need eight carries
- 17:47Speaker 3: on this drive.
- 17:48Speaker 4: Nothing has been done so far that would suggest that's
- 17:51Speaker 4: not possible for either way, Sean, or for the offensive line.
- 17:54Speaker 3: It is a valid question. I'm glad Mike brought it in. 877-353-0700.
- 17:59Speaker 4: But right now, I mean, a far more important stat
- 18:03Speaker 4: for a guy who is your leading rush opportunities guy
- 18:09Speaker 4: is how many times am I handing the ball off
- 18:12Speaker 4: to him? If this offense says it's not going to
- 18:14Speaker 4: be 20 times a game, then in those 10 or
- 18:19Speaker 4: in those 12, you need him averaging over five yards.
- 18:22Speaker 4: And Weishan is right there. He's exactly where you need
- 18:26Speaker 4: him to be. He's a really good player and he,
- 18:30Speaker 4: they were teasing all spring long and all camp long
- 18:33Speaker 4: about how watch what he can do in the passing game.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Also look what he has done so far in the
- 18:37Speaker 3: passing game.
- 18:38Speaker 4: He put the moves on that cat down and like
- 18:42Speaker 4: catches the ball about the nine yard line. He put
- 18:45Speaker 4: the moves on a defensive back for Arkansas that that
- 18:52Speaker 4: juke is going to haunt that safety for the rest
- 18:56Speaker 4: of his life. He's going to wake up in cold
- 18:59Speaker 4: sweats remembering a night game at Rice Eccles Stadium, not
- 19:04Speaker 4: because the must was so scary and loud, and they
- 19:06Speaker 4: were scary and loud, but because down in the north
- 19:09Speaker 4: end zone, Way Sean Parker, who's a guy, let's be honest,
- 19:14Speaker 4: every one of these SEC cats think he's not as
- 19:16Speaker 4: good as me, he's not as fast as me, he's
- 19:17Speaker 4: not as strong as me, he's not as agile as me.
- 19:20Speaker 4: Way Sean Parker made him look like he was a
- 19:22Speaker 4: little league player. He's never going to get over that.
- 19:28Speaker 3: That's one.
- 19:28Speaker 4: There's like five or six plays in every football player's
- 19:33Speaker 4: career where you, you have bad dreams about them for
- 19:36Speaker 4: the rest of your life. I could name at least
- 19:38Speaker 4: five for me. And I never got to play on
- 19:40Speaker 4: quite this stage. That guy is going to have to
- 19:44Speaker 4: seek counseling for the move that way.
- 19:46Speaker 3: Sean Parker put on him.
- 19:47Speaker 9: Speaker 3 I played way lower in my sport basketball,
- 19:52Speaker 9: way lower stage than you even played in football OC.
- 19:55Speaker 9: And I have nightmares about certain things that happened where
- 19:57Speaker 9: I'm like, I probably would have played at a higher
- 19:59Speaker 9: level if maybe I didn't get embarrassed like that in
- 20:02Speaker 9: my sophomore year, for example. So yeah, it, this is
- 20:06Speaker 9: going to live with that guy forever.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Probably.
- 20:08Speaker 4: And like 27, they're running back who picked up a
- 20:11Speaker 4: late a gap blitz from Cyrus Polu that had, it
- 20:16Speaker 4: was a great blitz pickup actually, but he got annihilated.
- 20:21Speaker 4: He will not have to suffer the pains of recurring
- 20:26Speaker 4: nightmare over it because no way he remembers that hit.
- 20:29Speaker 4: That guy like Utah imposing its will over guys of
- 20:34Speaker 4: this size and athletic system was actually one of the
- 20:37Speaker 4: more important things that we saw in this game. You
- 20:40Speaker 4: needed to be able to run away from the sec
- 20:42Speaker 4: defensive backs. You needed to be able to run over
- 20:45Speaker 4: the sec tacklers or the sec blockers. And Arkansas can't
- 20:50Speaker 4: give you any more than that. They're not a good
- 20:51Speaker 4: enough football team yet as a team, as a unit,
- 20:55Speaker 4: as a squad to be disciplined and to be, you know,
- 20:59Speaker 4: clean and execution. They weren't, I under, I overestimated, I
- 21:05Speaker 4: underestimated the gap between these two programs. I overestimated the
- 21:10Speaker 4: progress that Arkansas would have made, should have made because
- 21:14Speaker 4: they've got a new coach from Memphis because what do
- 21:16Speaker 4: we have?
- 21:16Speaker 3: We have all these great examples of regionally here.
- 21:22Speaker 4: When you promote a guy from UNLV to wherever, he
- 21:26Speaker 4: does a pretty darn good job. When you get a
- 21:28Speaker 4: guy who's stepping up and getting his first opportunity, he's
- 21:32Speaker 4: going from Boise to Washington or something, it's like, oh,
- 21:35Speaker 4: this is working out pretty nice.
- 21:36Speaker 3: They've done some nice things there.
- 21:39Speaker 4: And I've always been a believer that if you can
- 21:42Speaker 4: do it at the lower level, you'll do it to
- 21:44Speaker 4: an even better level. success rate at the higher level.
- 21:48Speaker 4: And Silverfield, I thought was out. He did some nice
- 21:51Speaker 4: things with Memphis. He's going to do some nice things
- 21:53Speaker 4: with Arkansas and it'll probably happen pretty quick. It's not
- 21:56Speaker 4: going to happen quick, man. Arkansas, they got some big
- 22:00Speaker 4: old fat offensive linemen that look nice off the bus.
- 22:04Speaker 4: And then your five foot 10 Jai Moa makes them
- 22:08Speaker 4: look silly, right? But what you saw, what, what Arkansas
- 22:14Speaker 4: could give you in this game was a litmus test
- 22:18Speaker 4: of where you are at an individual matchups, not in
- 22:21Speaker 4: team and scheme. Utah is so far ahead of them
- 22:24Speaker 4: right now. Team scheme and culture. Arkansas is good. Like
- 22:28Speaker 4: Ryan Silverfield is going to put on a mustache and
- 22:31Speaker 4: one of those inspector gadget noses. And he's going to
- 22:34Speaker 4: come to a Morgan Scali coaching clinic in the summertime
- 22:38Speaker 4: and be like, please teach me what you have done
- 22:40Speaker 4: in in a nine month turnaround. And, you know, it
- 22:44Speaker 4: kind of a weird and ugly exit from your predecessor
- 22:47Speaker 4: and look at where all these players are for you
- 22:50Speaker 4: right now.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Show me how you did that. Arkansas couldn't, hold your water.
- 22:55Speaker 4: On the team scheme and culture, but they do have
- 22:57Speaker 4: some big boys that run fast forties. And so when
- 23:01Speaker 4: you are in space and you got to break down
- 23:04Speaker 4: and you got to tackle that guy, that's where they
- 23:07Speaker 4: are important. That's where you're finding some things out when
- 23:09Speaker 4: you're in the box and you've got to get past
- 23:11Speaker 4: this blocker in order to make that tackle, you got
- 23:13Speaker 4: to run through this block or you don't even have
- 23:15Speaker 4: to run through it.
- 23:16Speaker 3: You just got to hold the point of attack.
- 23:18Speaker 4: So that John O'Hall or Lance Reynolds or Jackson Benny
- 23:22Speaker 4: can come up and clean up the pile. That is
- 23:24Speaker 4: where this Arkansas matchup was valuable for Utah. And they
- 23:28Speaker 4: passed those tests. That was something that I was really
- 23:31Speaker 4: excited to see. I overestimated Arkansas's ability as a team.
- 23:37Speaker 4: Arkansas clearly underestimated Utah's ability as individual physical athletes. And
- 23:44Speaker 4: in a lot of those matchups, the Utes just made
- 23:47Speaker 4: Arkansas look silly. Go back and watch the YouTube replay
- 23:51Speaker 4: where everything else is cut out.
- 23:52Speaker 3: And it's really just highlights. It's just bang, bang, bang, bang.
- 23:56Speaker 4: And YouTube, they don't have any sort of horse in
- 23:59Speaker 4: the race. So they give you the best plays, the
- 24:02Speaker 4: most impactful plays for both teams. And there's about an,
- 24:06Speaker 4: I think it's like a total of like a 10
- 24:08Speaker 4: minute video. There's about seven minutes in the middle where
- 24:11Speaker 4: Arkansas is not making any plays.
- 24:13Speaker 3: It's all Utah.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Guys doing Utah guy stuff.
- 24:18Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 24:19Speaker 4: 0070 says, my least favorite from the game is our
- 24:27Speaker 4: starting quarterback in the game of the fourth quarter of 36-3.
- 24:29Speaker 4: If he got hurt on that last touchdown, we never
- 24:33Speaker 4: would have heard the end of it. That is a good,
- 24:36Speaker 4: that is a strong observation. You have to find the
- 24:42Speaker 4: right balance between sending the message to your team. We're
- 24:48Speaker 4: going to compete for all four quarters and also sending
- 24:52Speaker 4: the message like.
- 24:56Speaker 3: That'll do pig. That'll do right. Big suey. You got it.
- 25:00Speaker 4: You go, you say, I mean, you can, we can
- 25:04Speaker 4: have you run this ball and.
- 25:08Speaker 3: Put your shoulder down and find the end zone one
- 25:10Speaker 3: last time.
- 25:12Speaker 8: Or we.
- 25:13Speaker 4: Could let bird Ficklin do that because he's our backup
- 25:17Speaker 4: quarterback or better yet.
- 25:19Speaker 3: We could let.
- 25:22Speaker 4: Somebody like Hunter Andrews do that out of a wildcat
- 25:25Speaker 4: because he's not a quarterback for us at all.
- 25:27Speaker 3: We can get Brandon Rose, get some time again, like
- 25:30Speaker 3: put the Rose out there. I was, I wanted to
- 25:32Speaker 3: see bam again. I want it like this.
- 25:35Speaker 4: This game was no more in doubt than Idaho was
- 25:38Speaker 4: in doubt in the fourth quarter.
- 25:39Speaker 3: There was, it's true. There was no more.
- 25:42Speaker 4: There was like Arkansas did drive down and they got
- 25:45Speaker 4: their kind of meaningless score toward the end.
- 25:47Speaker 3: But like.
- 25:49Speaker 4: The result of the game was no more up in
- 25:51Speaker 4: the air than the Idaho game was in the fourth quarter.
- 25:54Speaker 4: You could absolutely have been like, all right, put it.
- 25:58Speaker 4: Brandon Rose out there, put Matiaki Helu in the backfield,
- 26:02Speaker 4: put bam in the backfield, put They did put your
- 26:06Speaker 4: number two defense out there. They did start to, to
- 26:10Speaker 4: filter in the backup offensive line. You can put them
- 26:13Speaker 4: all the skill guys out there. You didn't need Devin
- 26:14Speaker 4: in there.
- 26:14Speaker 3: So, all right, if we're nitpicking, which is what we're
- 26:17Speaker 3: going to do on a Monday, that's fine.
- 26:19Speaker 10: Yes.
- 26:20Speaker 3: He doesn't need to be there.
- 26:22Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 26:22Speaker 9: I would have liked to see it go to bird quicker,
- 26:26Speaker 9: turn it over to bird quicker. And then I would
- 26:29Speaker 9: have liked to see Brandon Rose maybe in the game
- 26:32Speaker 9: because birds is a really important part of this, offense too.
- 26:35Speaker 9: And he's more than just an insurance policy. If, if
- 26:38Speaker 9: Devin gets hurt, but he's also a gigantic insurance policy
- 26:42Speaker 9: in that way. So I would have liked to see
- 26:43Speaker 9: that too, up 36 to three, but the point is
- 26:48Speaker 9: no one got hurt. And so everything, everything worked out fine.
- 26:53Speaker 9: I do wonder, Oh, see this still just being the
- 26:55Speaker 9: second game of the season. Is it to the team's
- 27:00Speaker 9: detriment that Devin gets less reps, right? less game reps,
- 27:05Speaker 9: even though he's third year as a starter in college football,
- 27:07Speaker 9: second year at Utah. He's got plenty of game experience
- 27:12Speaker 9: for this season. Even though you're up 36-3, that's probably
- 27:16Speaker 9: a reason why you still keep him in, right?
- 27:18Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 27:19Speaker 4: I think it's all right to just not have him
- 27:21Speaker 4: in because he is experienced enough.
- 27:24Speaker 3: There's no question.
- 27:25Speaker 7: Right.
- 27:26Speaker 4: And look, dev does not want to come out and
- 27:28Speaker 4: dev does not want to shy away from contact and
- 27:31Speaker 4: slide and do the things that all of us want
- 27:33Speaker 4: him to do to protect his body. He's a competitor.
- 27:36Speaker 4: He is a football player, right? And he's a healthy
- 27:38Speaker 4: football player right now. When you're that age, just Close
- 27:43Speaker 4: your eyes and rewind. All of us felt like we
- 27:46Speaker 4: were invincible at that age, and we were not even
- 27:49Speaker 4: close to as invincible in real life as that athlete is, right?
- 27:53Speaker 3: So he wants to play, and he wants to do
- 27:55Speaker 3: these things.
- 27:57Speaker 4: Part of the job of a first-year head coach and
- 28:00Speaker 4: a first-year coordinator is to say, this game is in
- 28:04Speaker 4: the bag, and we have won it. It's all right
- 28:07Speaker 4: for us if the score is 43-17 or even 43-24
- 28:10Speaker 4: at the end of this thing. We don't need for
- 28:16Speaker 4: Devin Dampier to be out there. Or, I guess, in
- 28:20Speaker 4: the Devin Dampier case, it's okay if this game is
- 28:23Speaker 4: 36-17 or 36-24.
- 28:27Speaker 3: Although, in that case, I would have been mad because
- 28:29Speaker 3: then they wouldn't have covered. And great teams cover. Yeah.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Not because you had money on the game or anything, right?
- 28:36Speaker 4: Picks I put out there, James, because you're giving me
- 28:38Speaker 4: an opportunity to gloat.
- 28:39Speaker 3: The picks I put out there.
- 28:41Speaker 4: I do five games a weekend in college football, five
- 28:46Speaker 4: and oh, this week.
- 28:46Speaker 7: Oh wow.
- 28:47Speaker 3: Oh yeah. That you patting myself on the back five
- 28:50Speaker 3: and oh, let's go. Congratulations.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Let's think about being five. And I was a chance
- 28:55Speaker 4: to go 10 and oh, next weekend. We have lots
- 28:58Speaker 4: to talk about from this game. 877-353-0700. Keep the feedback coming.
- 29:04Speaker 4: I want to try to stay on clock. Ari Temkin
- 29:06Speaker 4: joins us next. We have the Morgan Scali presser live
- 29:10Speaker 4: at noon. Ryan Edwards, Denver Broncos insider, and Zach Moss
- 29:14Speaker 4: all joining us on the show today.
- 29:16Speaker 3: We're rolling on a Monday. It's the Sean O'Connell Show,
- 29:18Speaker 3: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 29:28Speaker 11: You're tuned to.
- 29:28Speaker 10: The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of
- 29:32Speaker 10: ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 29:41Speaker 4: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell show on a Monday
- 29:43Speaker 4: reacting to a big weekend in Utah football and big
- 29:46Speaker 4: 12 football.
- 29:47Speaker 3: Lots of crazy cool stuff happened.
- 29:48Speaker 4: Ari Temkin joins us to discuss all of them.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Big 12 radio on tune in. Hello, Ari. Welcome.
- 29:57Speaker 8: What's up, buddy?
- 29:58Speaker 5: How are you?
- 29:58Speaker 3: Man, I'm Fired up.
- 30:01Speaker 4: I didn't even realize how fired up I am over
- 30:02Speaker 4: a big Utah win, an impressive BYU win, Oklahoma State,
- 30:08Speaker 4: what the heck happened?
- 30:09Speaker 3: You lose to Tulsa, you beat Oregon.
- 30:11Speaker 4: Man, this is a really interesting Big 12 conference already.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Let's start with the Utes, if you don't mind.
- 30:17Speaker 4: We know Arkansas is not exactly, you know, the flag
- 30:21Speaker 4: bearer for the SEC, but it is a team with
- 30:23Speaker 4: some athleticism and some talent, and Utah beat the brakes
- 30:27Speaker 4: off of it, Rice Eccles.
- 30:28Speaker 3: See anything you liked?
- 30:30Speaker 8: Well, the first play from scrimmage. How about a pass
- 30:35Speaker 8: to your backup quarterback and then a 36-yard pass out
- 30:38Speaker 8: of the field? I mean, I think we've talked about
- 30:41Speaker 8: it last week and really for the last couple of weeks,
- 30:43Speaker 8: but we certainly expected to see more fun. And Morgan
- 30:46Speaker 8: Scali is a lot of fun. I mean, and, you know,
- 30:50Speaker 8: all joking aside with, I mean, they have just absolutely
- 30:54Speaker 8: taken it too far. Idaho and now Arkansas back-to-back weeks.
- 30:58Speaker 8: And they're obviously going to have much more difficult games,
- 31:01Speaker 8: but I just think the feeling of this offense is
- 31:03Speaker 8: something that we've really never seen before just because of
- 31:06Speaker 8: the limitations of the previous offense. And, you know, I mean,
- 31:10Speaker 8: I've watched Andy Cole and Nikki call games for Kansas
- 31:13Speaker 8: very successfully running a very similar offense, but they've never
- 31:15Speaker 8: had the types of players that Utah has running this offense.
- 31:19Speaker 8: So when you've got Ficklin and Dan Pierre and Wayshawn
- 31:21Speaker 8: Parker in the backfield, I think there's so much you
- 31:23Speaker 8: can do. And again, And then there's so much off
- 31:26Speaker 8: of that that you can do, and the beauty is
- 31:29Speaker 8: in the simplicity of it. So let's go. But, I mean,
- 31:33Speaker 8: it's fun to watch. I certainly wanted to see some
- 31:35Speaker 8: of this when it came to what they have, and
- 31:38Speaker 8: we're seeing it. And what was it like? It was 7-3,
- 31:42Speaker 8: and then you look up and it's 36-3?
- 31:45Speaker 3: Yes.
- 31:46Speaker 10: Yes.
- 31:46Speaker 3: And then, you know, a little mop-up time touchdown for Arkansas.
- 31:51Speaker 4: One criticism, because we like to– We like to say
- 31:54Speaker 4: the things we like, but also be actual football fans
- 31:58Speaker 4: and be unrealistic and nitpicky and things like that. One
- 32:01Speaker 4: of the concerns that people are bringing in that I
- 32:03Speaker 4: think is a valid one is, you know, Devin Dampier
- 32:07Speaker 4: is getting hit a lot with some of this creativity
- 32:09Speaker 4: in the offense and using him as a runner and
- 32:12Speaker 4: even late in that game when you're, The game is
- 32:14Speaker 4: in hand. It was 36-3 when he scored his last touchdown,
- 32:18Speaker 4: and people are like, why is he the one running
- 32:21Speaker 4: the ball there and taking a big lick from a
- 32:23Speaker 4: safety or whatever? And look, Devin's a competitor. He's a
- 32:26Speaker 4: great athlete. He's a football player. He wants the ball
- 32:29Speaker 4: in his hand. He wants to be in there to
- 32:30Speaker 4: the final whistle. But is that something that this coaching
- 32:34Speaker 4: staff needs to mitigate when you're in a game that's
- 32:37Speaker 4: already decided?
- 32:39Speaker 10: Yes.
- 32:40Speaker 8: The short answer there is yes. I don't think it's
- 32:42Speaker 8: something that you really have to concern yourself with in
- 32:45Speaker 8: a close game. You know, I mean, I think he's
- 32:48Speaker 8: built for this and football is a dangerous sport where
- 32:51Speaker 8: injuries are going to happen. So, you know, because there's
- 32:53Speaker 8: always the talk about like, oh, do you want to
- 32:55Speaker 8: limit the hits your quarterback takes? you know, within a game.
- 32:58Speaker 8: And I certainly understand that, but I just think that
- 33:00Speaker 8: it makes them so dangerous that I wouldn't, but yeah,
- 33:02Speaker 8: I mean, in a game that is all but decided,
- 33:06Speaker 8: you know, I mean, I would, I would like to
- 33:08Speaker 8: see somebody not named Devin Dampier, Bert Ficklin and, or
- 33:12Speaker 8: a way Sean Parker getting the hits at the end
- 33:14Speaker 8: of that, that type of game. I mean, when you're a,
- 33:16Speaker 8: was it was 43 to three at that point where,
- 33:18Speaker 8: I mean, yes, 36 to three at that point when
- 33:21Speaker 8: you're in the fourth quarter, like, I think that's, that's
- 33:23Speaker 8: a fine time. And I agree with some of the
- 33:25Speaker 8: criticisms there. You just, you cannot leave yourself susceptible to
- 33:29Speaker 8: those kinds of hits because that's when things happen. I mean,
- 33:32Speaker 8: you know, at the end of the game for UCF,
- 33:35Speaker 8: this was a close game, but you know, Alonzo Barnett
- 33:37Speaker 8: got hurt on one of the, you know, the final
- 33:39Speaker 8: drive there. And, and, So now they're going to be
- 33:42Speaker 8: without Alonzo Barnett for some time at UCF. And that's
- 33:46Speaker 8: a close game, so it's not exactly apples to apples.
- 33:48Speaker 8: But at the end of games, especially in a blowout
- 33:51Speaker 8: where Arkansas is, they might have more of an incentive
- 33:56Speaker 8: to go after you in a way that they weren't earlier.
- 33:58Speaker 5: In the game.
- 33:59Speaker 8: I'm talking about consciously trying to injure players.
- 34:02Speaker 4: Also on Saturday was our first conference game, Big 12 game, BYU-Arizona.
- 34:08Speaker 4: And these are two teams that both have designs on
- 34:11Speaker 4: significant accomplishment in the conference championship race this year. Arizona
- 34:16Speaker 4: going to Provo, and there's always conversation about whether or
- 34:19Speaker 4: not that atmosphere and that altitude are affecting people. Brent
- 34:24Speaker 4: Brennan insisted that the atmosphere didn't bother us.
- 34:27Speaker 3: And then, of course.
- 34:28Speaker 4: The folks at Lavelle Edwards Stadium decided that they were
- 34:30Speaker 4: going to be extra loud because of it.
- 34:32Speaker 3: It was an awesome game. It was a great game.
- 34:34Speaker 4: Ultimately, BYU pulls away and wins it 28-17. They held
- 34:38Speaker 4: Arizona scoreless in the second half after trailing at halftime.
- 34:43Speaker 4: BYU ends up on top of this one. It really
- 34:46Speaker 4: kind of was the feature game of the week for
- 34:48Speaker 4: the conference.
- 34:49Speaker 3: What were your takeaways?
- 34:51Speaker 8: Yeah, first and foremost, take a bow, Kelly Papinga, because BYU,
- 34:55Speaker 8: I certainly had some question marks about him heading into
- 34:58Speaker 8: the season. And even after one week, given that it
- 35:00Speaker 8: was Utah tech, and we didn't really know much about
- 35:03Speaker 8: BYU following that game, but look, I mean, Jay Hill
- 35:05Speaker 8: was a legend. I mean, he did the damn thing
- 35:08Speaker 8: for Michigan this weekend too. And so, you know, I was,
- 35:11Speaker 8: I was curious how Popengo would be different and, and
- 35:14Speaker 8: would he still be as effective at the back end?
- 35:15Speaker 8: And I mean, that, that second half number was insane
- 35:19Speaker 8: compared to what they did in the first half. Now I,
- 35:21Speaker 8: I also credit, uh, Aaron Roderick and the BYU offense
- 35:24Speaker 8: figuring out that you've got LJ Amart in the backfield
- 35:27Speaker 8: and maybe more than four carries is the way to go.
- 35:30Speaker 8: Because in the second half... you know, Arizona ran 20
- 35:33Speaker 8: plays in the first half. They ran 42 plays. What
- 35:36Speaker 8: does that attribute it to? Well, if you, this is
- 35:38Speaker 8: your identity at BYU, you can run the football and
- 35:41Speaker 8: limit opportunities for the opposition. And that's exactly what they did.
- 35:44Speaker 8: They played great defense. They ran the ball effectively and suddenly,
- 35:48Speaker 8: you know, a dominant offensive first task for Arizona becomes
- 35:51Speaker 8: a very quiet second half. And that's, that's the identity
- 35:54Speaker 8: of BYU. You know, I mean, not every team knows
- 35:57Speaker 8: what its identity is two weeks into the season and
- 35:59Speaker 8: what they can fall back on. And, I mean, that
- 36:02Speaker 8: to me was as clear as day in that game
- 36:03Speaker 8: that like, ultimately they figured out the second half, like,
- 36:06Speaker 8: oh yeah, we can run the ball and we're pretty
- 36:07Speaker 8: good at it. And, you know, and then they made
- 36:10Speaker 8: some adjustments to the back end of their defense because
- 36:13Speaker 8: throws in the second half for Fafita, everyone was underneath.
- 36:16Speaker 8: You know, especially they turned over on downs on fourth
- 36:19Speaker 8: and four, throwing short of the sticks on fourth and four.
- 36:21Speaker 8: Are you kidding me? And third and eight in the
- 36:23Speaker 8: same situation. And we saw them on third down continuously
- 36:26Speaker 8: throw short of the sticks, hoping receiver would go pick
- 36:28Speaker 8: up yardage. So, you know, I think Seth Daigie in
- 36:31Speaker 8: the Arizona offense didn't really adjust to what Kelly Papinga
- 36:34Speaker 8: and that BYU defense did. And that's why you kind
- 36:36Speaker 8: of saw the zero score in the second half. And then,
- 36:40Speaker 8: I mean, look, this game also in the margins, I mean,
- 36:43Speaker 8: there was– had really bad penalties by Arizona in this game.
- 36:48Speaker 8: There was a dropped interception by JV on Cole early
- 36:51Speaker 8: in the game. And, you know, look, I think, I
- 36:54Speaker 8: don't know that I've, I've seen BYU ever have a
- 36:56Speaker 8: weapon quite like legend Glass or two games into his career,
- 36:59Speaker 8: but even just not even just his production, I think
- 37:01Speaker 8: he'd like three catches and the one at the end
- 37:03Speaker 8: that basically Clint to the 61 yarder, but earlier BYU
- 37:06Speaker 8: scored a touchdown with him being a decoy. And then
- 37:08Speaker 8: the exact same play they ran later is what he
- 37:09Speaker 8: had the 61 yard around. So I'm already seeing him now.
- 37:13Speaker 8: I had a major question about Arizona secondary heading into
- 37:15Speaker 8: this season. You know, they started a walk on and
- 37:18Speaker 8: a secondary in the last year included four NFL players
- 37:21Speaker 8: and a fifth that was an undrafted free agent. So
- 37:23Speaker 8: it's a totally different secondary. And, you know, I still
- 37:26Speaker 8: have some questions about what BYU can do against really
- 37:28Speaker 8: good past defenses, but in the reality, the reality of
- 37:31Speaker 8: the situation is two weeks in BYU is clearly the
- 37:34Speaker 8: best team in the big 12. It's not even close. Yeah.
- 37:37Speaker 4: As much as people on this station don't want to
- 37:39Speaker 4: hear that right now, uh, I think BYU and Utah,
- 37:44Speaker 4: you can make a case for the top two teams.
- 37:46Speaker 4: BYU has the most impressive win with a win over Arizona, obviously.
- 37:51Speaker 4: But Texas Tech escaped against Oregon State. They didn't look
- 37:56Speaker 4: all that impressive in week one against Abilene Christian either.
- 37:59Speaker 3: What do the Red Raiders have to figure out right now, Ari?
- 38:02Speaker 8: Yeah, and see, that was pretty much, in my statement
- 38:04Speaker 8: a moment ago, who I was referring to. I mean,
- 38:08Speaker 8: you could show this case for Utah, and I think
- 38:10Speaker 8: there are multiple teams in this conference that have looked
- 38:12Speaker 8: really good through two weeks on both sides of the ball.
- 38:14Speaker 8: Texas Tech has not. And look, Oregon State is very good.
- 38:18Speaker 8: Braden Atkinson is a dude. And it's funny because watching
- 38:22Speaker 8: the game, it kind of felt like to me that
- 38:24Speaker 8: both Atkinson and their true freshman wide receiver, Jesse Legree,
- 38:28Speaker 8: are both going to be playing for Texas Tech.
- 38:30Speaker 12: Year.
- 38:31Speaker 8: I mean, like the green was insane. It is second
- 38:34Speaker 8: career college game. He was incredible. I mean, it's wild
- 38:37Speaker 8: to see that like a three-star that goes to Oregon
- 38:39Speaker 8: state blows up as a true freshman, but that stuff
- 38:42Speaker 8: can happen. And that that's what we saw. You know,
- 38:47Speaker 8: all credits to what Shepard has done in year one
- 38:50Speaker 8: for him at Oregon State. I mean, they are 0-2
- 38:52Speaker 8: with two very close losses to two very good Big
- 38:55Speaker 8: 12 teams, both of who are going to meet now
- 38:57Speaker 8: next week on Friday night in Houston and Texas Tech.
- 39:01Speaker 7: This game, don't let the score fool you.
- 39:03Speaker 8: This game was very close. In fact, Braden Atkinson got
- 39:07Speaker 8: the ball back with two timeouts and a minute 40
- 39:09Speaker 8: left on the clock down to four. And they converted
- 39:12Speaker 8: a fourth and three, but they were penalized for a
- 39:16Speaker 8: pick play on it. And Brian Kelly on the call,
- 39:18Speaker 8: as we all know, basically said like, yeah, sometimes they'll
- 39:21Speaker 8: call that. Sometimes they won't. It's a very gray area
- 39:24Speaker 8: when it comes to pick plays. And on this particular,
- 39:27Speaker 8: in this particular moment, they, they called it and it
- 39:29Speaker 8: was a huge break for Texas tech because instead of
- 39:32Speaker 8: converting the fourth down and moving the chains and now
- 39:35Speaker 8: the clock's moving and you know, they're, they're closer to scoring.
- 39:38Speaker 8: Now it's fourth and nine and they get to stop
- 39:40Speaker 8: there to, to basically win the game. So yeah.
- 39:43Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 39:44Speaker 8: The score is a bit deceiving there. They really were
- 39:47Speaker 8: the beneficiaries of a, of a pick play penalty there
- 39:50Speaker 8: that could have gone either way and certainly went the
- 39:51Speaker 8: way of Texas tech, which.
- 39:53Speaker 4: I guess is good for the conference because you want
- 39:56Speaker 4: your presumed presumptive best team to be two and Oh,
- 40:00Speaker 4: you don't want to have to deal with the narrative
- 40:02Speaker 4: change around that, especially, you know, losing to a team
- 40:05Speaker 4: like Oregon state. But I think your point is well made.
- 40:08Speaker 4: I think Texas tech is, has shown a couple of
- 40:10Speaker 4: warts here, and they're going to have to figure that out,
- 40:13Speaker 4: not only down the road, but like you said, Friday
- 40:16Speaker 4: against Houston. Maybe the most interesting story is Oklahoma State,
- 40:23Speaker 4: because you lose in week one to Tulsa, 24-10.
- 40:25Speaker 3: And then a.
- 40:28Speaker 4: Lot of folks think that Oregon is not just a
- 40:31Speaker 4: threat in the Big Ten this year, but a national
- 40:33Speaker 4: championship threat, or at least they thought so. before this weekend, 39,
- 40:38Speaker 4: 31 victory for Oklahoma state as the ducks come to town.
- 40:43Speaker 4: Obviously the biggest win so far in the, in the
- 40:47Speaker 4: big 12 season and for true mess to maker. And
- 40:51Speaker 4: for all those guys who came from North Texas, I
- 40:54Speaker 4: imagine this is exactly why they did to have an
- 40:56Speaker 4: opportunity to do things like this. Oklahoma state pulled it off.
- 41:01Speaker 4: Where does that put them in the big 12 power structure?
- 41:06Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, after one week, it looked like they
- 41:09Speaker 8: were an afterthought in that conversation. And now it puts
- 41:13Speaker 8: them firmly back in that conversation. I think we all
- 41:15Speaker 8: expected Oklahoma State to start one-on-one. Certainly not this way, though. Yeah, and,
- 41:22Speaker 8: you know, we've watched college football for a long time. Like,
- 41:24Speaker 8: it's funny. It's like I feel like shame on me
- 41:26Speaker 8: for not learning my lesson time after time that, like,
- 41:29Speaker 8: Crazy things happen week to week, especially the first couple
- 41:32Speaker 8: of weeks of the season. And for everything that Oklahoma
- 41:34Speaker 8: State did not do right week one, it seems like
- 41:37Speaker 8: they did it right week two. Now, with that being said,
- 41:40Speaker 8: Oklahoma State still kept the door open for Oregon to
- 41:44Speaker 8: walk through. That game probably should have been more of
- 41:46Speaker 8: a blowout. Oregon basically had two pick sixes in this game.
- 41:50Speaker 11: They had one.
- 41:51Speaker 8: And then another that they cash in a play later. So,
- 41:54Speaker 8: I mean, you gift wrap them 14 points from, you know,
- 41:57Speaker 8: from interceptions and now mess maker has four picks in
- 42:00Speaker 8: two games. But I mean, this win was not a fluke. They,
- 42:04Speaker 8: they beat them up front on both lines of scrimmage.
- 42:06Speaker 8: I think the office of line one was the shocker
- 42:09Speaker 8: given what Tulsa did them along with their defensive line
- 42:11Speaker 8: last week. And Oregon, I mean, that was a defensive
- 42:15Speaker 8: line that absolutely whooped Texas tech in their bowl game.
- 42:18Speaker 8: And basically everybody from that line is back. And somehow
- 42:21Speaker 8: Oklahoma State, without their left tackle, just absolutely bullied them.
- 42:25Speaker 8: It was crazy to see. I mean, numbers can be funny.
- 42:31Speaker 8: The last time that Oklahoma State beat an FCS team
- 42:34Speaker 8: was September 7, 2024, when they beat Arkansas 39-31. Two
- 42:39Speaker 8: years later, their next FBS win comes against a big
- 42:43Speaker 8: 10 team, 39 to 31, the exact same score. They
- 42:47Speaker 8: still haven't won a big 12 game in two years,
- 42:49Speaker 8: but you'd think that will end this year. And yeah,
- 42:52Speaker 8: they've had not beaten a big 12 team, but they've
- 42:54Speaker 8: beaten an SEC team and now a big 10 team.
- 42:57Speaker 8: Pretty remarkable. I mean, there's so many ways to look
- 42:59Speaker 8: at it. And ultimately, Messermaker did have those two interceptions, but...
- 43:03Speaker 8: He was in complete command the majority of this game.
- 43:05Speaker 8: I mean, he had this ridiculous run on third down
- 43:08Speaker 8: where it'll be one of the biggest touchdowns you'll see
- 43:11Speaker 8: this season in college football. And I'm sure most have
- 43:14Speaker 8: seen the highlight of already, but he goes airborne. He
- 43:17Speaker 8: flips forward in the air. He got hit twice and
- 43:19Speaker 8: he scores a rushing touchdown doing a forward flip. It
- 43:22Speaker 8: was an unbelievable play and an unbelievable game.
- 43:26Speaker 4: Is that win enough to wash out the fact that
- 43:29Speaker 4: from a conference perspective, you You lost the Cy Hawk.
- 43:33Speaker 4: You lost in that Arizona State-Texas A & M matchup.
- 43:38Speaker 3: You lost in the UCF-Pitt matchup.
- 43:41Speaker 4: So the non-con not going all that great from a
- 43:44Speaker 4: conference-wide perspective, but of course the headline win for Oklahoma
- 43:47Speaker 4: State is what draws the attention.
- 43:50Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, I think you hit the nail on
- 43:52Speaker 8: the head there. Ultimately, there were I think going into
- 43:58Speaker 8: the weekend, we figured, okay, Utah should beat Arkansas. If
- 44:01Speaker 8: we can get one of the A & M, Arizona State,
- 44:04Speaker 8: or Kansas-Missouri wins, then that would be big for the conference,
- 44:07Speaker 8: and a conference that went 0-4 against SEC opponents in 2025. But,
- 44:14Speaker 8: you know, the A & M- Arizona State game was a
- 44:18Speaker 8: lot closer than the score would indicate because it was
- 44:21Speaker 8: a four-point game in the fourth quarter and even an
- 44:23Speaker 8: 11-point game. But basically back-to-back pick sixes for Cutter Bowley
- 44:27Speaker 8: undid any of that momentum. And that was how the
- 44:30Speaker 8: final score ended up looking as lopsided as it did.
- 44:34Speaker 8: I think the Kansas-Missouri game, that one may have appeared
- 44:37Speaker 8: closer than it actually was, considering Kansas really couldn't complete
- 44:41Speaker 8: many forward passes, which is a problem.
- 44:42Speaker 5: And then the.
- 44:43Speaker 8: UCF-Pitt game was just a wild and crazy game, basically
- 44:46Speaker 8: played in a monsoon. And for Pitt's offense, it exploded
- 44:50Speaker 8: week one. UCF defense did a ton against them here.
- 44:53Speaker 8: We too, the problem now is UCF defense looks legit,
- 44:57Speaker 8: but once again, they seem to have a revolving door quarterback.
- 45:00Speaker 8: They have like six different guys in a start games
- 45:01Speaker 8: for them last year, quarterback. And they're well on their
- 45:03Speaker 8: way to having to do that again this year with
- 45:05Speaker 8: the injury to Barnett. Hopefully it's not too long. So, yeah,
- 45:08Speaker 8: I mean, I mean, from a non-con standpoint, I think
- 45:11Speaker 8: this is the week three is the no slip up
- 45:14Speaker 8: week because you only have one power, four power, four game.
- 45:17Speaker 8: It's West Virginia, Virginia and, and Virginia now in the
- 45:19Speaker 8: top 25, so a good opportunity there for Rich Rod's
- 45:22Speaker 8: squad that I'm still not sure they fixed their defense.
- 45:25Speaker 8: And then you've got a bunch of, like, potential misstep
- 45:29Speaker 8: games for teams when it comes to, like, this is
- 45:31Speaker 8: like a group of six-week. So you've had a lot
- 45:33Speaker 8: of FCS games. You've had some Power 4, Power 4,
- 45:36Speaker 8: and now it's the week the majority of teams are
- 45:38Speaker 8: kind of finishing their non-conference with a group of six teams.
- 45:40Speaker 8: So hopefully no slip-ups there, and I think as long
- 45:43Speaker 8: as that's the case, because we've seen that in previous
- 45:45Speaker 8: years where, like, a Rice beats Houston game or a
- 45:47Speaker 8: Miami of Ohio beat Cincinnati. So ultimately I hope that like,
- 45:51Speaker 8: if everybody holds serve on this week, we should be
- 45:54Speaker 8: all right and have a few pretty big time wins
- 45:57Speaker 8: to stick in our back pocket. But with the biggest
- 46:00Speaker 8: one still become, and look, I think after two weeks, I'm,
- 46:03Speaker 8: you know, I think BYU has found a recipe for
- 46:06Speaker 8: potentially beating Notre Dame. We get later on and there
- 46:08Speaker 8: will be no bigger non-conference game than that one coming
- 46:10Speaker 8: up in October.
- 46:11Speaker 4: The Friday night matchup that we've already alluded to is
- 46:14Speaker 4: going to be fascinating, and I do think factors into
- 46:16Speaker 4: the conference title discussion no matter which way it ends up.
- 46:20Speaker 4: So how do you think Houston-Texas Tech ends up?
- 46:24Speaker 8: Well, I mean, if we've watched the first two weeks,
- 46:27Speaker 8: then Houston's the better team. Texas tech has, has issues
- 46:32Speaker 8: here and they've won and winning is the great deodorant,
- 46:36Speaker 8: but still, I mean, it's hard to overlook the issues
- 46:38Speaker 8: that they've had. I mean, look, Will Hammond is working
- 46:41Speaker 8: his way back from an ACL injury and he's clearly
- 46:43Speaker 8: not you know, not as mobile and not as effective as,
- 46:46Speaker 8: as he needs to be. And so hopefully, you know,
- 46:48Speaker 8: he can work himself to playing better, but that's a
- 46:51Speaker 8: really good Houston defense. Now, both of these past defenses
- 46:55Speaker 8: were torn apart by Oregon state. And so it'll be
- 46:58Speaker 8: interesting to see, you know, how Texas tech past defense looks.
- 47:02Speaker 8: Texas Tech's been missing some key guys. One of their
- 47:06Speaker 8: starting safeties has missed the first two games of the
- 47:08Speaker 8: season due to a violation of team rules. Before this
- 47:10Speaker 8: game on Saturday, Terrence Carter, their stud tight end, was
- 47:14Speaker 8: ruled out. So we'll have to see from an injury
- 47:16Speaker 8: front what that looks like. But I'm excited for this game.
- 47:20Speaker 8: And I, again, I think like if we're watching these games,
- 47:22Speaker 8: Houston is the better team right now. Texas tech has
- 47:25Speaker 8: to prove it. And Texas tech has not played the
- 47:27Speaker 8: toughest opponents yet. And yet there's two at O and
- 47:31Speaker 8: so now they go with their toughest test. So with
- 47:32Speaker 8: that being said, they both had to eke out a
- 47:34Speaker 8: close victory against Oregon state. So this should be a
- 47:37Speaker 8: good one. And, you know, again, I'm looking at the quarterback.
- 47:40Speaker 8: In particular, Texas Tech had major red zone scoring issues
- 47:43Speaker 8: last year. Like their touchdown percentage in the red zone
- 47:46Speaker 8: was not nearly as good as it probably needed to be.
- 47:48Speaker 8: And this year they're off to a really slow start
- 47:50Speaker 8: that way. And, you know, they felt like they had
- 47:52Speaker 8: more mobility with Will Hammond, who is a more mobile quarterback,
- 47:55Speaker 8: but he's obviously extremely limited as he works his way
- 47:58Speaker 8: back from that ACL injury. And you can tell, you
- 48:00Speaker 8: can tell he's, he's just not the same. So they've
- 48:02Speaker 8: got to get that fixed or figured out because they're
- 48:04Speaker 8: not going to win the big 12 if they don't.
- 48:07Speaker 3: Ari, you're the man.
- 48:08Speaker 4: Appreciate you giving us some time as you do on
- 48:11Speaker 4: these Mondays. Enjoy a full slate again this weekend. We'll
- 48:15Speaker 4: chat again next week.
- 48:17Speaker 11: You too, brother.
- 48:17Speaker 8: Take care.
- 48:18Speaker 4: Ari Temkin, Big 12 Radio on TuneIn and doing a
- 48:23Speaker 4: little work with the Dallas Cowboys as well. I will
- 48:26Speaker 4: always deliberately avoid talking Dallas Cowboys whenever I can. We've
- 48:31Speaker 4: got the Morgan Scali press conference coming up in about
- 48:35Speaker 4: seven minutes. We'll take a quick one here, very brief
- 48:38Speaker 4: segment to close the hour, and then we'll get to
- 48:41Speaker 4: the Morgan Scali presser. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on
- 48:45Speaker 4: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 48:49Speaker 10: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 48:52Speaker 10: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 48:59Speaker 12: We're going to get to the Morgan Scali press conference
- 49:05Speaker 12: here in just a second, but I want to remind
- 49:07Speaker 12: all of you that we were out last week at
- 49:10Speaker 12: Southern Steer down in Saratoga Springs.
- 49:14Speaker 3: You have to get out there. If you got a chance,
- 49:17Speaker 3: just make the trip. It's about 30-ish miles.
- 49:20Speaker 4: From downtown salt Lake city, uh, Dan and Aubrey Gunther,
- 49:23Speaker 4: the owners, proprietors of the Southern steer butcher down there
- 49:26Speaker 4: on Redwood road, 1705 North Redwood road in Saratoga Springs.
- 49:32Speaker 3: Uh, they hooked me up. They gave me one of
- 49:33Speaker 3: the armadillo eggs. Okay.
- 49:35Speaker 4: It is a jalapeno popper wrapped in spicy sausage with
- 49:39Speaker 4: wrapped in bacon. I made that thing for myself. My
- 49:44Speaker 4: daughters did not want to share it with me, so
- 49:45Speaker 4: I ate the whole thing myself. A meal by itself. Delicious, texture, perfect,
- 49:52Speaker 4: crispy bacon, juicy sausage, a little spice, and then the
- 49:56Speaker 4: cream cheese and jalapeno in the middle.
- 49:58Speaker 3: Incredible stuff. Yesterday, They also.
- 50:02Speaker 4: Hooked me up with a big slab of dino ribs,
- 50:04Speaker 4: about seven pounds of the dino beef ribs. I smoked
- 50:08Speaker 4: those bad boys till they were about 210 degrees internal temperature,
- 50:12Speaker 4: and the bone just slid right out. Chop it all up.
- 50:17Speaker 4: Better than a brisket, more flavorful bone flavor. It's like
- 50:22Speaker 4: the gelatin renders down to that nice.
- 50:25Speaker 3: Soft, delicious. Oh, my gosh. My mouth is watering thinking
- 50:29Speaker 3: about it again.
- 50:31Speaker 4: Shout out to the Gunthers for hooking me up and
- 50:34Speaker 4: making sure that I had a beautiful menu for my
- 50:37Speaker 4: football weekend.
- 50:39Speaker 3: And guess what?
- 50:39Speaker 4: They'll do the same thing for you. Just head down there.
- 50:41Speaker 4: Tell them you heard about it on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 50:44Speaker 4: They'll treat you well.
- 50:45Speaker 3: I promise. I also got the hot honey chicken crack dip.
- 50:50Speaker 4: That's just one visit. Next time I'm getting me a
- 50:52Speaker 4: Tomahawk steak. I'm going to try some of their sausages,
- 50:56Speaker 4: some of their jerky. It is a one-stop shop. They've
- 50:59Speaker 4: got the pre-made meals. They've got the sides. They've got
- 51:01Speaker 4: everything you need, ethically sourced, without the antibiotics, the hormones,
- 51:06Speaker 4: the chemicals that are in the supermarket meats. Southern Steer Butcher,
- 51:11Speaker 4: official butcher of the Sean O'Connell Show. And now I'm
- 51:14Speaker 4: hungry for the leftovers on those plate ribs, those big
- 51:18Speaker 4: dino beef ribs. Tell them OC sent you when you
- 51:22Speaker 4: head down to Southern Steer. And thanks to Dan and
- 51:24Speaker 4: Aubrey and everyone else down there for hooking us up.
- 51:28Speaker 4: Morgan Scali Press Conference is next. Don't go anywhere. It's
- 51:30Speaker 4: ESPN 700, 92 on FM. We're back, and Morgan Scali
- 51:36Speaker 4: is at the podium.
- 51:38Speaker 11: This Friday on campus in women's volleyball has three games
- 51:41Speaker 11: back-to-back-to-back this week. Huge first tour at home, 3 p.m.,
- 51:45Speaker 11: so show up and be loud. Go support Coach Dorico
- 51:48Speaker 11: and those awesome ladies. And as far as the game, again,
- 51:54Speaker 11: can't say enough about the coaches, their game plans. As
- 51:59Speaker 11: a head coach, it's all about the culture and how
- 52:03Speaker 11: we do things. And the game planning really is up
- 52:06Speaker 11: to Coach McGiven, Coach Swan, Coach Shaw. So credit to
- 52:10Speaker 11: those gentlemen and their staff for putting that game plan together.
- 52:15Speaker 11: And proud of the offensive, defensive lines for their physicality
- 52:18Speaker 11: all night. We talked about a few guys. with Noah
- 52:23Speaker 11: Benny and Jai Mua and Dev, Weishan. Going back and
- 52:29Speaker 11: looking at the film, really pleased with the backers, how
- 52:33Speaker 11: active they were, how physical they were. I thought Nate
- 52:36Speaker 11: Ritchie had his best game as a Ute. A very
- 52:39Speaker 11: good tackling day for him, some PBUs. Hunter Andrews and
- 52:42Speaker 11: Will Money, you go back and watch that film, and
- 52:45Speaker 11: they are blocking their tails off. Very good game by
- 52:49Speaker 11: those guys, and I thought Daniel Bray ran hard. Never
- 52:54Speaker 11: get too many shout-outs to the special teams guys. Dylan Curtis,
- 52:57Speaker 11: 100% on his PAT so far. Kicking the ball out
- 53:01Speaker 11: of the end zone, which if you, you know, as
- 53:03Speaker 11: a defensive coordinator, kick that thing out of the end
- 53:05Speaker 11: zone every time. Never give them the opportunity to return
- 53:08Speaker 11: a ball. Ryan Phillips had an unbelievable punt. Net at 60,
- 53:14Speaker 11: I believe, and then Logan Castor, you know, Our snapper,
- 53:18Speaker 11: he never gets enough credit. That guy's on our leadership council.
- 53:23Speaker 11: And you don't notice the snapper until you don't have
- 53:26Speaker 11: a good one. And then that's when you notice him.
- 53:28Speaker 11: So credit to Logan for what he's been doing. In
- 53:33Speaker 11: terms of our opponent coming up, Utah State, so much
- 53:37Speaker 11: respect for Bronco Mendenhall. Anywhere he's been, he's created a culture.
- 53:42Speaker 11: And he's true to who he is. He's a very
- 53:44Speaker 11: good coach. has produced everywhere he's been, so much respect
- 53:49Speaker 11: to him and his team. Robert and I is a
- 53:53Speaker 11: guy that I've respected as well, the way he runs
- 53:56Speaker 11: an offense, his discipline nature, the way he coaches. And
- 54:01Speaker 11: then Coach Howell is a very good defensive mind, so
- 54:04Speaker 11: we know we're going to get the Aggies' best shot.
- 54:07Speaker 11: You watch those guys play, they play hard. They've got
- 54:11Speaker 11: two athletic quarterbacks. Whoever starts, one got injured at the
- 54:16Speaker 11: end of the last game, but very athletic. Another one
- 54:19Speaker 11: of those games where you've really got to be concerned
- 54:21Speaker 11: about an extra guy in the box for the Q
- 54:24Speaker 11: run game. They've got speed on the edges defensively, very sound,
- 54:30Speaker 11: very good tackling team, and they hit. They run to
- 54:34Speaker 11: the ball and they're well coached. Excited to So this
- 54:40Speaker 11: is 114, I believe, 114th time Utah youths have played
- 54:43Speaker 11: the Aggies. And in 1960, Bud Scali scored the only
- 54:48Speaker 11: touchdown against Merlin Olsen and that crew here. It wasn't
- 54:55Speaker 11: Rice Eccles at the time. I think it was the
- 54:57Speaker 11: Redskins versus the Aggies at that point. But 6-0, and
- 55:02Speaker 11: that was my first– You know, memory was seeing my
- 55:07Speaker 11: dad's newspaper clipping. Of course, I wasn't born at the time,
- 55:10Speaker 11: but seeing that. So the tradition's strong and excited for
- 55:16Speaker 11: us to host the Aggies. Questions? Justin? We got Justin's question.
- 55:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 55:22Speaker 13: He said it's not that spicy. With Utah State coming
- 55:26Speaker 13: to town, a dominant win over Arkansas for the last
- 55:29Speaker 13: two opponents, are you concerned about the penalties continuing from
- 55:33Speaker 13: last week?
- 55:35Speaker 11: Um, you know, going back and looking at the penalties,
- 55:39Speaker 11: the ones that you really need to handle are those that,
- 55:45Speaker 11: you know, it's delay games that you can, you know,
- 55:49Speaker 11: you should never have those. Those are ones that, you know, procedurally,
- 55:53Speaker 11: we've got to be better on the sideline, and our
- 55:55Speaker 11: offense knows that. The, you know, pass interference stuff, I'm
- 55:59Speaker 11: going to continue to have our guys be aggressive. And that's,
- 56:03Speaker 11: you know, I think the Big 12 does a really
- 56:05Speaker 11: good job of calling games and there's going to be
- 56:08Speaker 11: disagreements and, but they do a heck of a job.
- 56:10Speaker 11: They have a hard enough job as it is. And
- 56:12Speaker 11: I thought for the most part, we were pretty, pretty clean.
- 56:15Speaker 11: You look over the first two games, I think we're
- 56:17Speaker 11: one of the fewest in penalties. And, you know, particularly
- 56:21Speaker 11: at the offensive line that you've had one holding penalty,
- 56:23Speaker 11: it was on a, on a tight end and really
- 56:26Speaker 11: no Fault starts from offensive linemen, so I'm really pleased
- 56:30Speaker 11: with the discipline there. I think we're doing a really
- 56:32Speaker 11: good job.
- 56:32Speaker 13: And then nationally, the Battle of the Brothers probably doesn't
- 56:36Speaker 13: get much attention.
- 56:38Speaker 11: Obviously, you growing up here, you know all about it.
- 56:40Speaker 13: What does this rivalry series mean to you, and how
- 56:43Speaker 13: important is it to play it pretty regularly?
- 56:46Speaker 11: Oh, I, you know, any time you get to play
- 56:49Speaker 11: the in-state schools, there's something on the line, right? And
- 56:54Speaker 11: it is.
- 56:57Speaker 11: You never take it for granted. I was in Logan
- 57:00Speaker 11: when we lost to Chucky Keeton and that crew. And it's,
- 57:05Speaker 11: you know, they want to win this thing. You've got
- 57:08Speaker 11: recruiting on the line. You've got bragging rights in-state. So,
- 57:14Speaker 11: you know, at the end of the day, it's always
- 57:16Speaker 11: going to be important when you're playing those in-state schools.
- 57:18Speaker 11: And I love the rivalries, whether it's BYU, Utah State.
- 57:23Speaker 11: You know, it's just healthy, in my opinion.
- 57:26Speaker 14: Speaking as a former defensive coordinator, when you look at
- 57:30Speaker 14: your own offense, what kind of struggles does that present
- 57:34Speaker 14: a defensive coordinator? Can you explain what this week would
- 57:36Speaker 14: look like trying to be able to figure out how
- 57:38Speaker 14: to go against an.
- 57:40Speaker 11: Offense like that? What you try and do each snap
- 57:45Speaker 11: is know what offensive personnel is coming out on the
- 57:48Speaker 11: football field, particularly if you're a man coverage team and
- 57:50Speaker 11: you're trying to match good on good. When you have...
- 57:55Speaker 11: athletes that can play multiple positions, right? Daniel Bray could
- 57:59Speaker 11: line up as a wide receiver, he could line up
- 58:00Speaker 11: as a running back. Bird, you see, lining up as
- 58:04Speaker 11: a wide receiver, he can also be a quarterback. And
- 58:06Speaker 11: when it's a quarterback that, you know, can also throw
- 58:10Speaker 11: the ball after a handoff or after a backwards pass,
- 58:12Speaker 11: that creates, you know, well, we've got to stay on coverage,
- 58:17Speaker 11: first of all. We've got to be aware that he
- 58:19Speaker 11: can still throw the ball. These are the issues that
- 58:24Speaker 11: you face every single snap. And when you've got, you know,
- 58:28Speaker 11: 40 seconds on the play clock, play ends, and really
- 58:32Speaker 11: you don't have 40 seconds, you have about 15 seconds
- 58:35Speaker 11: to figure out what's going on. Who's coming on, who's
- 58:38Speaker 11: coming off. The most stressful, most stressed out person in
- 58:43Speaker 11: the entire stadium on game day is your personnel guy
- 58:45Speaker 11: up in the booth that's trying to, it's 12 personnel. No, no, no,
- 58:49Speaker 11: it's 10 personnel. You know, all the while the coach
- 58:52Speaker 11: is like, let's go, let's go. So they have a
- 58:56Speaker 11: hard time, and the more you can create.
- 58:59Speaker 12: Chaos with guys.
- 59:00Speaker 11: Coming on, guys going off, and still be able to
- 59:05Speaker 11: snap it in time and and, you know, be efficient.
- 59:09Speaker 11: That's what we're trying to do. Um, creating different tempos
- 59:12Speaker 11: as well. You know, you go from being a huddle
- 59:15Speaker 11: team to quick on the ball. And so teams aren't,
- 59:19Speaker 11: don't get into a rhythm of, okay, they're always going
- 59:21Speaker 11: to huddle. They're always going to break the huddle and
- 59:22Speaker 11: we get to see the formation. You got to be
- 59:25Speaker 11: able to mix that stuff up as well. And we're
- 59:27Speaker 11: constantly having conversations back and forth as to, You know,
- 59:31Speaker 11: what's too much? What's, you know, what can we get
- 59:34Speaker 11: away with? You know, all the while, you're just trying
- 59:39Speaker 11: to make sure that you're getting your guys the ball, right?
- 59:46Speaker 11: Figure out who your guys are, and we've got a
- 59:48Speaker 11: bunch of them. And so you can have that. There's that.
- 59:53Speaker 11: Do you want to be someone or do you want
- 59:54Speaker 11: to do something? If you want to be someone, anywhere
- 59:57Speaker 11: can go. You can go someplace and go start, you know,
- 1:00:01Speaker 11: Or you can be a part of a great team
- 1:00:03Speaker 11: and do something. And our guys have a great attitude
- 1:00:06Speaker 11: right now, great mentality. You may get yours one week,
- 1:00:10Speaker 11: you may not get as much the next week, but
- 1:00:12Speaker 11: it doesn't matter who scores, it matters that we score.
- 1:00:14Speaker 11: And the guys are bought into that right now.
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: Jackson Benny's played a lot of nickel to start the season.
- 1:00:22Speaker 7: What about his skill set makes him.
- 1:00:24Speaker 11: A good fit at that position? Very good cover guy.
- 1:00:28Speaker 11: He's long levered. He gets his hands on you. He's
- 1:00:32Speaker 11: really good at sliding his feet, good hips, good ball skills.
- 1:00:37Speaker 11: All those skill sets make for a good corner. We
- 1:00:41Speaker 11: can also bliss him. We haven't done much of that necessarily,
- 1:00:44Speaker 11: but he's got an unbelievable skill set.
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: You decided to keep the starting offensive line the same
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: from game one to game two.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: What led to that decision, and did they show you.
- 1:00:54Speaker 14: Enough on tape for you to lock that in as
- 1:00:55Speaker 14: you're starting time for the foreseeable future?
- 1:00:57Speaker 11: Yeah, I would say, you know, particularly the tackle spots,
- 1:01:00Speaker 11: those are pretty much solidified with Sed and Zerway. And
- 1:01:03Speaker 11: then the guard spots, I think Roger's been doing a
- 1:01:05Speaker 11: really good job as Keith has continued to get healthy.
- 1:01:10Speaker 11: And so, you know, we're going to continue to see
- 1:01:13Speaker 11: guys get reps in those situations. May, you know, have
- 1:01:18Speaker 11: some guys get a little bit more backup reps at tackle.
- 1:01:22Speaker 11: You know, the more your guys can do, Isaiah Kim
- 1:01:25Speaker 11: is another guy that snaps at center but also could
- 1:01:28Speaker 11: play guard. It's just important that when you get those opportunities,
- 1:01:33Speaker 11: they get those opportunities. So you see a lot of
- 1:01:36Speaker 11: our twos and threes coming in and playing in those situations,
- 1:01:40Speaker 11: how valuable it is to get those guys reps. You're
- 1:01:43Speaker 11: not trying to run up the score, but it's important
- 1:01:46Speaker 11: to get those guys reps under the lights because that's
- 1:01:50Speaker 11: how you find out really who they are. really pleased
- 1:01:54Speaker 11: with the progression of that offensive line, and we'll see,
- 1:01:59Speaker 11: you know, because we do have some guys that are challenging,
- 1:02:02Speaker 11: and those guys know, hey, you know, whenever I get
- 1:02:06Speaker 11: my shot, I've got to make it count. But I
- 1:02:10Speaker 11: would say I don't think we've necessarily solidified this is
- 1:02:13Speaker 11: what it's going to be for the rest of the season.
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: Morgan, the last two offensive coordinators you've hired have come
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: from Rocco Mendel's staff.
- 1:02:20Speaker 11: I didn't hire one. you were involved with okay okay
- 1:02:26Speaker 11: there um.
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: Just what is it about his his offenses or just
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: the similarities that you like that he also.
- 1:02:33Speaker 8: Likes that you know and that you you wanted to
- 1:02:36Speaker 8: kind of pick up from his staff and hire those.
- 1:02:39Speaker 11: Guys one of those guys um well yeah both jason
- 1:02:43Speaker 11: and and and mac g they Elements that cause you
- 1:02:49Speaker 11: issues are particularly man coverage teams, formations into the boundary
- 1:02:56Speaker 11: where your skill, your corners would have to travel, right?
- 1:02:59Speaker 11: If your corner travels, more than likely it's man coverage.
- 1:03:03Speaker 11: If your corner doesn't travel, okay, it's probably zone or
- 1:03:07Speaker 11: zone pressure. So stuff like that, the shifts, the motions
- 1:03:11Speaker 11: that force defenders to communicate through throughout pre-snap communication. How
- 1:03:20Speaker 11: good are they at pre-snap communication? How loud are they,
- 1:03:23Speaker 11: particularly in loud environments? So the changing of the formation,
- 1:03:29Speaker 11: the motions that can cause eye tricks, the changing of
- 1:03:32Speaker 11: personnel groups, and then the physicality. If you don't have
- 1:03:38Speaker 11: an offense that challenges you physically, it's tough to play
- 1:03:42Speaker 11: on Saturday that way. So it's complementary football. what you
- 1:03:47Speaker 11: face in spring ball and fall camp, it better be
- 1:03:49Speaker 11: getting you physical, right? Or, you know, it's tough to
- 1:03:55Speaker 11: ask that of your guys come season time.
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: Coach, building off of.
- 1:04:00Speaker 6: That physicality, how would you assess the physicality level and
- 1:04:04Speaker 6: where do you feel like your offensive line and defensive
- 1:04:07Speaker 6: line can develop the most?
- 1:04:11Speaker 11: We got to continue to see where we're at. You know,
- 1:04:13Speaker 11: we're two games in and like I said, You really
- 1:04:16Speaker 11: don't know who you are until probably midway through the season.
- 1:04:20Speaker 11: I like our progress. You know, a lot of the
- 1:04:23Speaker 11: being physical is not just, you know, blowing snot rockets
- 1:04:27Speaker 11: and trying to tee off on people. It's actually using
- 1:04:30Speaker 11: really good techniques. So, you know, inside hands, vertical leverage
- 1:04:34Speaker 11: is what we talk about all the time. And that's
- 1:04:38Speaker 11: showing up. And you've got to be able to promote
- 1:04:40Speaker 11: it when you see it. Man, our guys are doing
- 1:04:43Speaker 11: a really good job of that, both on the offensive
- 1:04:45Speaker 11: and defensive side of the ball, using their hands, driving piles, finishing.
- 1:04:53Speaker 11: That's the stuff that I want to see and that
- 1:04:56Speaker 11: we're seeing in games one and two. You're always going
- 1:05:00Speaker 11: to have minuses, stuff that you've got to clean up,
- 1:05:01Speaker 11: whether it's footwork, whether I was too high. But for
- 1:05:07Speaker 11: the most part, I think coaches are doing a really
- 1:05:09Speaker 11: good job of teaching these guys really good technique.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: Kind of building off that one as well, with tackling
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: was something that you guys, we've talked to you a lot.
- 1:05:17Speaker 6: About going back to spring.
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: Through the first two games, you guys have had less
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: than 10 missed tackles in the game. Just how as
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: a whole do you think this unit on the defense
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: is doing in the tackling category, and where is there
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: left to improve upon?
- 1:05:30Speaker 11: Well, good tackling is good tackling, and sometimes you face
- 1:05:37Speaker 11: really good athletes that make you miss, and if you're
- 1:05:40Speaker 11: relentless to the ball, you know, that shouldn't be an issue.
- 1:05:46Speaker 11: So that's, you know, what this culture does for these
- 1:05:50Speaker 11: guys is it gets them in the mind frame of, okay, yeah,
- 1:05:54Speaker 11: I'm being taught technique, but I can also attack, attack, attack,
- 1:06:00Speaker 11: because I know the guy behind me, if I miss,
- 1:06:02Speaker 11: is going to be there. Coach Swan and that crew
- 1:06:04Speaker 11: is doing a really good job of making sure these
- 1:06:07Speaker 11: guys in practice, because you can't, you know, Right now
- 1:06:11Speaker 11: during the season, if you don't know how to tackle,
- 1:06:14Speaker 11: that's an issue. And so, you know, and the stuff
- 1:06:18Speaker 11: that we do do, making sure they go low, they
- 1:06:21Speaker 11: tag low, you know, just proper technique is over and
- 1:06:26Speaker 11: over again. It's stuff that you do over and over
- 1:06:28Speaker 11: and over again. If you don't do it and you
- 1:06:29Speaker 11: don't hold them accountable for it, then you shouldn't expect
- 1:06:32Speaker 11: to see it on game day. But they've done a
- 1:06:34Speaker 11: really good job of coaching those guys up in spring,
- 1:06:36Speaker 11: in fall camp when we were going live, and it's
- 1:06:39Speaker 11: showing up.
- 1:06:41Speaker 10: Well, if you're consistently having guys behind you and those
- 1:06:45Speaker 10: shots are piling.
- 1:06:47Speaker 11: Up, When you throw, you know, say a fade ball,
- 1:07:16Speaker 11: two out of three things can happen that are good
- 1:07:20Speaker 11: for the offense, right? A penalty or a completion, right?
- 1:07:25Speaker 11: And so you're going to take those opportunities, particularly when
- 1:07:29Speaker 11: you have the athletes that can go up and their
- 1:07:32Speaker 11: 50% is really good. You see that with Pagan, with Larry.
- 1:07:36Speaker 11: These guys can go up and get the ball.
- 1:07:39Speaker 10: So.
- 1:07:40Speaker 11: You don't just throw deep shots to throw deep shots,
- 1:07:42Speaker 11: but if you want to loosen up a secondary, you've
- 1:07:47Speaker 11: got to be able to have those options. And so
- 1:07:53Speaker 11: I don't know how far Bird can throw it. He's
- 1:07:54Speaker 11: got a really live arm. We've not had a competition
- 1:07:58Speaker 11: or anything like that, but, yeah, he can sling it.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: Coach, K.J.
- 1:08:03Speaker 14: Jackson was 8 for 12 passing in the first quarter. No,
- 1:08:07Speaker 14: not with a touchdown.
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: After that, he was 4-for-22 with an interception.
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: What were the in-game adjustments that allowed you to kind
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: of rattle him?
- 1:08:16Speaker 11: I think early on, some of those completions, I'd be
- 1:08:18Speaker 11: interested to see where some of those completions were. A
- 1:08:21Speaker 11: lot of them were on the away. You had a
- 1:08:24Speaker 11: screen play. So some of those are within 10 yards
- 1:08:27Speaker 11: of scrimmage, and that's fine. Anything past 10 yards, if
- 1:08:32Speaker 11: he's really efficient, that's not a good thing. So I
- 1:08:36Speaker 11: think the... The cumulative effect of getting hit. I mean,
- 1:08:41Speaker 11: he was getting hit quite a bit. If not, he
- 1:08:43Speaker 11: was getting bodies thrown into him. So really good job
- 1:08:47Speaker 11: by our guys of providing pressure. And then, you know,
- 1:08:52Speaker 11: you look at those 13 pass breakups. A lot of
- 1:08:54Speaker 11: those are just guys batting down balls at the line
- 1:08:56Speaker 11: of scrimmage, being aware of depth of drop, you know,
- 1:09:00Speaker 11: this going to be a three step down distance situation?
- 1:09:02Speaker 11: Is this going to be a five step? So our
- 1:09:05Speaker 11: guys understanding that plays into it. I would say probably
- 1:09:11Speaker 11: early on he was getting the short stuff and then
- 1:09:14Speaker 11: forced into longer yardage situations. You have to throw longer,
- 1:09:19Speaker 11: and we were having success there.
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: Final question for Coach.
- 1:09:22Speaker 11: Pagan will play against his old team this Saturday.
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: Is he the player you were hoping he would be,
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: and how does.
- 1:09:28Speaker 11: He fit into the group? Oh, he's everything. I love
- 1:09:32Speaker 11: that kid. Love how he's progressed. You watch him, and
- 1:09:36Speaker 11: I'm always... Talk to the wide receivers. What does Coach
- 1:09:40Speaker 11: Scali want out of you? Blocking. Blocking. Downfield. Go block downfield.
- 1:09:44Speaker 11: And You see all these guys buying in. It's so
- 1:09:47Speaker 11: much fun to see these guys block for each other
- 1:09:50Speaker 11: and understand team football. But Braden Pagan has been fantastic.
- 1:09:56Speaker 11: I'm excited for him. But it's not about him versus
- 1:10:02Speaker 11: Utah State. It's about the University of Utah versus Utah State.
- 1:10:06Speaker 11: And it's all about the team. And he knows that.
- 1:10:08Speaker 11: But he's been a team player. He's on the leadership
- 1:10:12Speaker 11: council for a reason. Love having him a part of
- 1:10:15Speaker 11: this family. Okay, thanks so much.
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: All right, that's it.
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: That's Utah head coach Morgan Scali's weekly press conference with
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: the gathered media up there every Monday at noon right
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: here on ESPN 792.1 FM, your home of the Utes.
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: If you didn't get a chance to listen to it live,
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: I imagine that the drive with Spence jackets will probably
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: bring it out at some point on their show today. Also,
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: we'll have it available shortly at ESPN, 700 sports.com and
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: on the ESPN 700 app. Look, there's not a ton
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: that you take away from those press conferences after victories, right?
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: Because what you're talking about is a positive outcome for
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: a team that put in a lot of work during
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: the week. the game plans for Colton Swan and for
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: Kevin McGiven really were kind of the stars of the
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: show in a lot of ways on Saturday night at
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: Rice Eccles. When Morgan said, I would like to see
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: where those completions were happening, I would also like to
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: see the sort of spray chart for where the first
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: half and first quarter success in Arkansas's passing game came from.
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: It felt like it was a lot of open stuff
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: in the middle of the field. And then they figured
- 1:11:42Speaker 4: it out. And Colton Swan is going to be a
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: guy who finds ways to address things in game. But
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: if you remember talking with Morgan Scali last year, when
- 1:11:54Speaker 4: we're doing coordinator's corner with him as the defensive coordinator,
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: he was very candid about the fact that look, when
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: people say in game adjustments, the end game adjustment is
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: something that you've already prepped and you just remind your
- 1:12:10Speaker 4: players in game adjustments for both Colton Swan and Kevin
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: McGiven are not things that you put in, in a
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: sort of reactionary.
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: Oh crap. What we had planned on isn't working kind
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: of manner. It's all right.
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: I shouldn't have called that particular play against that look
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: on the defensive side of the ball, right? I should
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: have had us in a zone there instead of a
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: man when they have that personnel grouping or they're in
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: that formation or that motion shows up. And all of
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: that only is adjustable if you've already prepped it during
- 1:12:45Speaker 4: the week. That's where these coaches need to be given
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: the credit they deserve because we have this false sense
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: that you can make an in-game adjustment in a real
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: football game the way that you do in Madden. where
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: you just call something different and the computer knows how
- 1:13:03Speaker 4: to execute it. These guys have to know how to
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: execute what they're doing, and they only know how to
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: execute that if you have practiced it. So the preparation,
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: the attention to detail in the preparation for this team
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: offensively and defensively is the reason why we're talking about
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: what we're talking about right now, the reason why we're
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: saying Utah's coming off of two massive victories. The reason
- 1:13:26Speaker 4: why we're talking about Utah being now like back in
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: the good graces of some of the national pundits, our guy,
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: Joel Klatt, who's one of my favorites in the business,
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: even though I can't, it's like pulling teeth, trying to
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: get him to come on the show. I just think
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: he's got really good grasp of the college football world.
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: I think he knows the game.
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: Well, he's the one who coined the phrase death taxes,
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: Utah football. He said it again on his reaction podcast.
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: They like, For him, the Utes are back in a
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: way that many people thought they would not be this year,
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: that they would take time. And look, don't crown anything
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: after two games, but all you can do is play
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: what is in front of you. Idaho was game, but
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: not talented enough. Arkansas, I don't think was all that game,
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: and they're not talented enough either.
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: And Utah, I think.
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: came out even more prepared in week two than they
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: were in week one. Week three, and we'll talk about
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: it a lot during the week. Week three, this is
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: a big challenge because you've got a bit more of
- 1:14:34Speaker 4: an emotional connection with it being an in-state team, but
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: you know you're supposed to win. And Utah State has
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: put some really, really bad stuff on film this year.
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: Credit to the Aggies, credit to Bronco and his staff, though.
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: They pushed Washington to... All the way to the edge.
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: Unfortunately, weren't able to come away with the victory, but
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: they pushed Washington all the way to the edge. I mean,
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: their turnaround from a week one performance to a week
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: two performance is right up there with Oklahoma State after
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: losing to Tulsa. It's right up there with Michigan after,
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: in reality, losing to Western Michigan and then turning around
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: and beating Tulsa.
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: Beating Oklahoma. This is, this is a team that you
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: have to take seriously.
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: And that's going to be something that this new coaching
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: staff is going to have to make sure these guys do.
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: But Utah looks like they're firing on all cylinders. And
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: you heard the questions because You nitpick, that's what you
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: do in the reactions, right? When we're talking about how
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: do you get better? How do you make this win
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: look even more impressive? More importantly, how do you build
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: momentum off of this win to become something more significant?
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: A lot of the questions are going to center around
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: that offensive line still. Do you have a solidified starting group?
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: The answer to that at this moment is no. How
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: do you get your passing game even more involved than
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: it's been?
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: We love that way.
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: Sean Parker continues to show his versatility. You cannot get
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: into a situation where you rely excessively on way, Sean Parker,
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: and they're not anywhere close to that yet, but you
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: can find yourself in that mind space. When games get harder,
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: when you're playing in a close game against, you know,
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: a conference opponent, or maybe it happens against Utah state.
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: You don't want to keep going back to the well
- 1:16:29Speaker 4: too hard. You need to have Kyrie Scholes more established.
- 1:16:33Speaker 4: And Morgan Scali gave shout-outs to the guys that are
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: blocking right now. No block, no rock is a thing
- 1:16:41Speaker 4: that we kind of throw out there tongue-in-cheek. It is
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: a real reality. It is an actual reality in a
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: wide receiver room at the University of Utah and should
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: be everywhere.
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: And I think in most places it is.
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: If you're not a receiver who's willing to block downfield,
- 1:16:56Speaker 4: they're not going to throw you the ball either. Kyrie
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: Scholes came to Utah thinking he was going to be
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: like 1A, 1B kind of a target right now. He
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: has not yet been that in the targeting. Go watch
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: Kyrie Scholes, offense number zero. Go watch Kyrie Scholes blocking
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: his rear end off when the ball's not coming his
- 1:17:16Speaker 4: way very often as of yet.
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: That's a strong indication. That's good.
- 1:17:19Speaker 4: That is a testament to culture. And it's easy to
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: feel good about your culture when you're winning. And it's
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: easier to feel good about your culture when you're blowing
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: teams out. But those are the things that travel. Those
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: are the things that remain, that should at least remain
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: constant when a game is easy and when a game
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: is tough. The game looks a heck of a lot
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: easier when you've got guys hustling, even when they're targeted like, what,
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: four times in the last two weeks? That's not necessarily
- 1:17:52Speaker 4: what you signed up for. But the breakout game is
- 1:17:55Speaker 4: coming if you do what you're supposed to do. Love
- 1:18:00Speaker 4: the way that Morgan handles the media responsibilities of his position.
- 1:18:06Speaker 3: He's still very forthcoming. He's still a.
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: Guy that I think on some level at least sort
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: of enjoys talking to the media, which.
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: It's not infinite. That's what it is right now.
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: That's exactly right. At some point, he will be jaded
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: to it and start to hate it. I think it'll
- 1:18:23Speaker 4: take him a little bit longer than it took his predecessor,
- 1:18:27Speaker 4: but he will hate it at some point.
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: I mean, go back.
- 1:18:30Speaker 4: Early Bill Belichick was kind of charismatic and funny behind
- 1:18:33Speaker 4: a microphone, and we know what that has become.
- 1:18:35Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 1:18:36Speaker 9: And I always joke about that. It seems like at
- 1:18:42Speaker 9: the beginning... Maybe coaches are just excited to be a
- 1:18:45Speaker 9: head coach, especially first time head coaches right and so
- 1:18:49Speaker 9: this is part of it i'm still excited about this
- 1:18:52Speaker 9: i said this i joked about this with will hardy
- 1:18:54Speaker 9: though too like okay he's that way for now but
- 1:18:57Speaker 9: he's kind of kept that he's in year going into
- 1:19:00Speaker 9: year five for the utah jazz and he's still kind
- 1:19:02Speaker 9: of kept that forthcoming media friendliness.
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: He's also young i think that matters I think that
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: for like a will Hardy that, and Morgan's young too.
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: I think that there's just like, part of it is
- 1:19:15Speaker 4: just age, energy level, the fatigue, the real fatigue, but
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: also the fatigue of like, I have been answering these questions.
- 1:19:26Speaker 4: I've been doing some form of this for three decades now.
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: Like you get to a point where bill Belichick is at.
- 1:19:33Speaker 4: And I hate, I hate his stance with the media.
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: I could not stand it at all, but, We're at
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: a point now in his career and in the career
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: of like a Pete Carroll type or these guys, they're
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: not getting any unique questions ever again.
- 1:19:47Speaker 3: And they know it and we know it.
- 1:19:50Speaker 4: And people just say it's the debate rages and we'll,
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: we'll get to it later on in the show during
- 1:19:54Speaker 4: the daily dump about whether or not the like sideline
- 1:19:57Speaker 4: reporter interview is even something you should subject coaches to
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: after Sark cold shouldered the first lady of Utah sports.
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: How dare you Sark? but it creates a narrative, right?
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: It creates a.
- 1:20:09Speaker 4: Discourse online about like, well, are these questions for the,
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: most of the time are the, the questions to the
- 1:20:17Speaker 4: coaches and their non-responses even adding anything to a broadcast?
- 1:20:22Speaker 3: I mean, it's.
- 1:20:23Speaker 4: Probably something that a producer and a television director needs
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: to decide, not us, but it is a valid question.
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: All right. Ryan Edwards is going to join us.
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: Denver Broncos coach, studio analyst monday night football preview broncos
- 1:20:41Speaker 4: chiefs at six on espn broncos radio the call is
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: on the fan 1039 and 98.3 so ryan edwards next
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: to talk a little broncos football on espn 700 and
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: 92 on.
- 1:20:52Speaker 10: Fm This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of
- 1:21:01Speaker 10: the best inside of your Utes. Let's get back to
- 1:21:04Speaker 10: OC from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:21:12Speaker 4: Time for a little Monday Night Football preview. Broncos Chiefs
- 1:21:15Speaker 4: tonight on ESPN and ABC.
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: Kickoff at 6 p.m.
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: Right after live programming ends on our station.
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: Ryan Edwards.
- 1:21:26Speaker 4: Denver Broncos insider and radio analyst is kind enough to
- 1:21:30Speaker 4: join us to preview this game to kick off the
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: season for AFC West Rivals.
- 1:21:35Speaker 3: Ryan, welcome to the show. How are you? Doing great.
- 1:21:38Speaker 5: Thanks for having me on.
- 1:21:39Speaker 3: The Broncos, you're probably aware, the.
- 1:21:41Speaker 4: Broncos are sort of a de facto home team for
- 1:21:43Speaker 4: a very large contingent of fans here in Salt Lake City, Utah.
- 1:21:47Speaker 4: I think that they probably have the largest following of
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: any NFL team. And they have a bunch of former
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: Utes on. That helps us here on the home of
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: the Utes. So we'll start with those guys. Garrett Bowles
- 1:21:58Speaker 4: is firmly established himself as not only you're starting tackle,
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: but kind of a leader on this offense. And Jonah
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: Ellis has really, I think, done some nice things for
- 1:22:08Speaker 4: this defense. I expect kind of a breakout year for him. Let's,
- 1:22:12Speaker 4: let's start with Garrett Bowles and his importance to this
- 1:22:15Speaker 4: team as the season progresses with, you know, a young
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: quarterback still trying to kind of make his way and
- 1:22:21Speaker 4: some guys that on this team where even though he's
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: not old in real life, Garrett Bowles is sort of
- 1:22:26Speaker 4: an elder statesman for this offense.
- 1:22:30Speaker 5: Yeah, and he came into the league a little old too, right?
- 1:22:32Speaker 5: So that was kind of the deal. But, yeah, Garrett
- 1:22:35Speaker 5: has been phenomenal, honestly. You know, first round pick, in fact,
- 1:22:39Speaker 5: he's the last offensive tackle the Broncos drafted, literally, last
- 1:22:44Speaker 5: offensive tackle they drafted. So that's a pretty good sign there.
- 1:22:47Speaker 5: One of the last guys playing, of course, from John
- 1:22:49Speaker 5: Elway's draft as well. But, yeah, I mean, he's just
- 1:22:52Speaker 5: been rock solid. I mean, in fact, better than that.
- 1:22:55Speaker 5: He's been great. He's been an all-pro. I mean, this
- 1:22:57Speaker 5: last year he was an all-pro. He's been a pro bowler. And,
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: you know, you're thinking about the success that you can
- 1:23:03Speaker 5: have as a team when you build through the trenches
- 1:23:06Speaker 5: and have success with those kinds of players. When Sean
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: Payton got here, he added two offensive linemen almost immediately. And,
- 1:23:12Speaker 5: you know, oftentimes is the case when a new coach
- 1:23:14Speaker 5: comes into town, he's got to get his guys, like
- 1:23:17Speaker 5: guys I want in free agency, guys that I want
- 1:23:19Speaker 5: in the draft, He hasn't even for a moment considered
- 1:23:21Speaker 5: replacing Garrett Bowles because he's just been that good. And
- 1:23:24Speaker 5: now he's considered probably one of the top five offensive tackles,
- 1:23:27Speaker 5: especially left tackles in the NFL. It's truly remarkable, especially
- 1:23:31Speaker 5: from where he started considering, you know, there's some raw
- 1:23:35Speaker 5: athletic upside, but it took him a little bit of
- 1:23:37Speaker 5: time to find his footing.
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: The other guy that I, I guess I'm more excited
- 1:23:42Speaker 4: to talk about is Jonah Ellis and by his, his youngest,
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: his youngest, I think he's the youngest of the Ellis
- 1:23:49Speaker 4: brothers is on the Utah football team right now. Jonah
- 1:23:52Speaker 4: obviously came through here. His older brothers that played at
- 1:23:54Speaker 4: Idaho are in the league. Dad's on staff here at
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: the university of Utah. If you're an Ellis, we have
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: high expectations of you. What do the Broncos expect from
- 1:24:04Speaker 4: Jonah Ellis this year?
- 1:24:07Speaker 5: Well, they expect to step forward, as you said, and
- 1:24:10Speaker 5: he's starting tonight. So basically with Koop on the exempt
- 1:24:15Speaker 5: list right now, they're going to go with Jonah Ellis
- 1:24:19Speaker 5: as the starting outside linebacker, and he's going to have
- 1:24:21Speaker 5: some opportunities tonight. I mean, the fact is the Chiefs
- 1:24:25Speaker 5: are down there starting left tackle, which means the side
- 1:24:28Speaker 5: that Nick Benito is going to be rushing from, there
- 1:24:30Speaker 5: should be some opportunities, but of course the Chiefs already
- 1:24:32Speaker 5: know that, so they're going to probably give some extra
- 1:24:34Speaker 5: attention to that side tonight. which means Jonah Ellis should
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: see some one-on-ones tonight. And if that ends up being
- 1:24:39Speaker 5: the case, he really needs to find a way to
- 1:24:41Speaker 5: be successful. With Jonathan Cooper on the opposite side of
- 1:24:44Speaker 5: Nick Benito, they have had that success. certainly leading the
- 1:24:48Speaker 5: league in sacks the last two years, the Broncos have been.
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: So I say we're Jonah Ellis tonight and as well
- 1:24:54Speaker 5: as for the season, he's going to continue to need
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: to show up. I mean, he's a high energy player.
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: You guys know that he's a high energy player. He
- 1:25:01Speaker 5: has a nose for the football. He had double digit
- 1:25:03Speaker 5: sacks in that final year there at Utah. We expect,
- 1:25:06Speaker 5: I think the Broncos expect him to have a similar
- 1:25:08Speaker 5: kind of season this year.
- 1:25:11Speaker 3: Are the Chiefs still the Chiefs?
- 1:25:12Speaker 4: I know Bronco's person might not be the right person
- 1:25:16Speaker 4: to ask that, but this is a team that has
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: been hanging around, and they were flirting with that dynasty thing,
- 1:25:23Speaker 4: and then they've had some issues, and then they still
- 1:25:26Speaker 4: seem to be there.
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: And it's Andy Reid and it's Pat.
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: Mahomes, but everyone, you know, Kelsey a year older and
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: married to Taylor Swift and on tour and whatever else.
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: Are the Chiefs still the Chiefs?
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: We're about to find out, aren't we? I mean, 6-11
- 1:25:42Speaker 5: last year, you could chalk some of that up to
- 1:25:44Speaker 5: the eventuality of the roster aging out in some spots.
- 1:25:48Speaker 5: Patrick Mahomes' injury, certainly. But they're still running it back
- 1:25:52Speaker 5: with quite a few of those guys. I mean, Travis
- 1:25:53Speaker 5: Kelsey is almost 37 years old, as you mentioned. Chris
- 1:25:56Speaker 5: Jones is pretty high up there, too. So they're running
- 1:25:59Speaker 5: it back with a lot of the same construction. They
- 1:26:01Speaker 5: added Kenneth Walker running back. That's going to be something
- 1:26:04Speaker 5: that really is going to be interesting to see if
- 1:26:06Speaker 5: that can kind of sustain the inevitable fall of this
- 1:26:09Speaker 5: dynasty if they can find a run game. The Broncos
- 1:26:12Speaker 5: fans certainly know about that with Terrell Davis here was
- 1:26:15Speaker 5: able to sort of help John Elway get over the
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: hump in those championships. And I don't know if that's
- 1:26:20Speaker 5: where they're headed right now, but I know that's in
- 1:26:23Speaker 5: anticipation for tonight as well as this season, that they're
- 1:26:25Speaker 5: going to lean a bit more on the run game
- 1:26:27Speaker 5: and take some off of Patrick Mahomes because he's nine
- 1:26:31Speaker 5: months removed from an ACL surgery. He's just not going
- 1:26:34Speaker 5: to have the mobility. So to, I guess, long-winded answer
- 1:26:37Speaker 5: your question is I guess we're going to find out
- 1:26:39Speaker 5: because I think the chiefs are on the bit of
- 1:26:43Speaker 5: a decline, but I remember doing this same exercise with
- 1:26:46Speaker 5: the Patriots for all those years when they were in
- 1:26:48Speaker 5: the midst of their dynasty. And a lot of us,
- 1:26:51Speaker 5: including myself at times looked pretty foolish, kind of waiting
- 1:26:54Speaker 5: for it to happening or predicting it's going to happen.
- 1:26:57Speaker 5: I'm going to sort of see, but I do like
- 1:26:59Speaker 5: the Broncos chances tonight.
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: I'm curious where you think the Broncos fit in the
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: overall power structure of the NFL. I guess they've got
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: what the seventh or eighth highest odds to win a Superbowl.
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: Outside looking in, a good mix of veteran and youthful players.
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: I don't know that they have some of the marquee
- 1:27:21Speaker 4: star power that some of the other considered Super Bowl
- 1:27:23Speaker 4: contenders do. But overall, I see this Broncos team as
- 1:27:28Speaker 4: one that's pretty problematic for even the top, top squads
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: in the league. Is the expectation internally that they will
- 1:27:35Speaker 4: be Super Bowl contenders and they will be division champs
- 1:27:39Speaker 4: and AFC champs?
- 1:27:42Speaker 5: They believe so, yes. They believe that's one of the
- 1:27:45Speaker 5: reasons why they brought back so many of their players
- 1:27:47Speaker 5: from last year during free agency, and they only added
- 1:27:51Speaker 5: a handful during the draft. The one big move, obviously,
- 1:27:54Speaker 5: was Jalen Waddell. But the reason they did all that
- 1:27:56Speaker 5: is they believe in their culture. They believe in this team.
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: And they do think they're poised to make a real
- 1:28:01Speaker 5: run this year, health permitting, of course. And that starts
- 1:28:03Speaker 5: with your quarterback. And honestly, to that question, because I
- 1:28:07Speaker 5: get asked that a lot, I'd say that, in my opinion,
- 1:28:10Speaker 5: it all depends on what the offense does this year.
- 1:28:12Speaker 5: I think there's a certain standard we can expect from
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: the defense. They're going to be opportunistic. They're going to
- 1:28:17Speaker 5: get after the quarterback. I hope that they have some
- 1:28:20Speaker 5: better turnover luck this year, but the offense really kind
- 1:28:23Speaker 5: of has to take that step forward for, I think
- 1:28:25Speaker 5: most people to take them seriously. You mentioned seven best odds.
- 1:28:28Speaker 5: They're the third best odds in their own division. And
- 1:28:31Speaker 5: they won it last year with 14 wins. So, you know,
- 1:28:34Speaker 5: year over year, people just don't, aren't really completely buying
- 1:28:36Speaker 5: them yet. And I think the offense, if they can
- 1:28:38Speaker 5: take another step forward, if Bo, Nix Davis web calling
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: the plays can take another step forward, pretty significant step forward.
- 1:28:44Speaker 5: I think a lot of the naysayers out there, the
- 1:28:46Speaker 5: people that don't believe they will come around pretty quick.
- 1:28:49Speaker 5: Cause right now, especially in this, this iteration of the NFL,
- 1:28:52Speaker 5: it is an offensive driven league.
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: What does a step forward for Bo Nix look like?
- 1:28:57Speaker 4: What is this team trying to get out of him
- 1:29:00Speaker 4: or maybe a mistake or a weakness in his game
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: that they're trying to eliminate in these off seasons?
- 1:29:06Speaker 3: I think consistency.
- 1:29:08Speaker 5: He's obviously shown the ability to be clutch, especially in
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: the fourth quarter. I mean, these comeback wins, that's a
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: big deal. And it's the reason why the question gets
- 1:29:16Speaker 5: asked to me often, do you have your franchise quarterback?
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: And I say, yeah. I mean, the hardest thing he's
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: already doing, he's clutch when he needs to be clutch.
- 1:29:24Speaker 5: He comes up with big plays. That win over the
- 1:29:26Speaker 5: Buffalo Bills, yeah, I mean, you've got five takeaways from
- 1:29:29Speaker 5: the defense, which, again, Josh Allen will give those to
- 1:29:31Speaker 5: you if you want them. But then your offense still
- 1:29:33Speaker 5: has to produce because the Bills offense did. So Bo
- 1:29:37Speaker 5: Nix just needs to do that for four quarters, right? Now,
- 1:29:40Speaker 5: not every quarterback can do that for four quarters, but
- 1:29:43Speaker 5: maybe give me two and a half to three quarters.
- 1:29:46Speaker 5: Let's take a step forward and say instead of. Well,
- 1:29:49Speaker 5: you have one good quarter, you have two bad quarters,
- 1:29:52Speaker 5: and then you have one great quarter. Do you know
- 1:29:55Speaker 5: what I'm saying? Like, give yourself a position where you
- 1:29:57Speaker 5: don't have to make these dramatic comebacks. You have that
- 1:30:00Speaker 5: in your back pocket. You know that you have the
- 1:30:02Speaker 5: ability to do that. The team knows they have the
- 1:30:03Speaker 5: ability to do that. But what it is for Bo
- 1:30:06Speaker 5: Nix is, okay, when you start the game, you start
- 1:30:08Speaker 5: a little faster. and and they've already shown the ability
- 1:30:11Speaker 5: to close half strong so you know sort of keep
- 1:30:13Speaker 5: that don't fall back there and then hey come out
- 1:30:15Speaker 5: of the third quarter and don't have a lull the
- 1:30:17Speaker 5: third quarter has been one of the worst for the
- 1:30:19Speaker 5: broncos over the last couple of years they've got to
- 1:30:21Speaker 5: find a way to be more consistent i think it
- 1:30:23Speaker 5: starts with the quarterback.
- 1:30:26Speaker 4: What is the strength of this team positionally and where's
- 1:30:29Speaker 4: the biggest question.
- 1:30:30Speaker 3: Mark Ooh, good one.
- 1:30:34Speaker 5: Uh, I'd say strength. I mean, I'm cheating if I
- 1:30:37Speaker 5: say the trenches. So I'll just say, I'll say the
- 1:30:40Speaker 5: defensive line and they lost John Franklin Myers, but they
- 1:30:44Speaker 5: really do like the depth of this group. Uh, any
- 1:30:47Speaker 5: Elmo Wazirike is going to start tonight, but Malcolm Roach
- 1:30:50Speaker 5: is a guy that, uh, he's going to rotate in
- 1:30:52Speaker 5: and he plays a significant role. Sabian Jones was a
- 1:30:55Speaker 5: third round pick last year.
- 1:30:56Speaker 3: They took Tyler on yet.
- 1:30:57Speaker 5: Um, this year in the third round, They feel like
- 1:30:59Speaker 5: they have a lot of depth there. They have a
- 1:31:01Speaker 5: lot of different ways. And that's before I get to
- 1:31:03Speaker 5: Zach Allen, who's one of the most elite defensive tackles
- 1:31:05Speaker 5: in the game, along with DJ Jones, who's one of
- 1:31:08Speaker 5: the better nose tackles.
- 1:31:09Speaker 14: In the game.
- 1:31:10Speaker 5: So the defensive line, along with the edge is really strong.
- 1:31:13Speaker 5: Weakest probably get to the inside linebacker group right behind them.
- 1:31:17Speaker 5: And it's not to say that they don't fill their roles.
- 1:31:20Speaker 5: They're very important, but they are susceptible to running backs
- 1:31:23Speaker 5: out of the backfield and tight ends in space. And again,
- 1:31:27Speaker 5: If you get one injury there, it becomes a little
- 1:31:29Speaker 5: dicey on what your depth looks like behind that because
- 1:31:32Speaker 5: you don't have.
- 1:31:33Speaker 8: A lot of experience.
- 1:31:34Speaker 5: So, yeah, I mean, the defense is very good overall,
- 1:31:38Speaker 5: but there are certainly some spots where if you experience
- 1:31:41Speaker 5: a couple of mishaps or injuries, it could get a
- 1:31:44Speaker 5: little dicey.
- 1:31:45Speaker 4: Outside of Denver, and I know it's an unfair thing
- 1:31:47Speaker 4: to ask when you're someone who's so dialed in on
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: the Broncos, but outside of Denver, what NFL storyline draws
- 1:31:55Speaker 4: your eye most right now, early in the season, season
- 1:31:58Speaker 4: kicking off?
- 1:32:01Speaker 5: Well, yesterday the Chargers collapsing against Arizona was something. Of
- 1:32:08Speaker 5: all the expectations, and we spent a lot of time
- 1:32:10Speaker 5: this offseason talking about Mike McDaniel, And what impact he
- 1:32:14Speaker 5: might have there on Justin Herbert and the run game.
- 1:32:17Speaker 5: And you just saw.
- 1:32:18Speaker 3: None of it.
- 1:32:19Speaker 5: So, and, and their defense looked bad too, which I
- 1:32:22Speaker 5: did not think they would fall off as bad as
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: they did. So that, that one is, is fascinating to me.
- 1:32:28Speaker 5: You know, the, the just overall picture of the offense.
- 1:32:31Speaker 5: I mean, it was the highest scoring offensive weekend, first
- 1:32:35Speaker 5: weekend of the NFL since the merger and, And I
- 1:32:38Speaker 5: think if both these teams tonight combine for 42 points,
- 1:32:42Speaker 5: then it'll be the highest scoring first weekend ever in
- 1:32:45Speaker 5: the NFL, which is pretty ridiculous. That's something to sort
- 1:32:49Speaker 5: of peak interest uh you know you had the bears
- 1:32:53Speaker 5: you had the ravens you had the bills against the
- 1:32:55Speaker 5: texans all just having the jaguars or the broncos are
- 1:32:59Speaker 5: going to face next week all having really big weekends
- 1:33:01Speaker 5: offensively so certainly like the pattern here is defense certainly
- 1:33:06Speaker 5: can win championships and you need to have a good
- 1:33:08Speaker 5: defense to win in the postseason but during the regular
- 1:33:11Speaker 5: season it's really about having a prolific offense and an
- 1:33:14Speaker 5: ability to score at will.
- 1:33:17Speaker 4: All right, I'm going to assume that you've put the
- 1:33:20Speaker 4: Broncos in the Super Bowl, so who's coming out of
- 1:33:21Speaker 4: the NFC to play against them?
- 1:33:23Speaker 5: Well, hang on. Now, don't assume that.
- 1:33:26Speaker 3: Okay, I won't assume. I won't assume, but.
- 1:33:31Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, I do like the Broncos' chances, but
- 1:33:35Speaker 5: the Bills are probably the team that's the top of
- 1:33:37Speaker 5: the AFC for me. Like right now... I still put
- 1:33:41Speaker 5: them up there, even though the Broncos beat them head-to-head
- 1:33:43Speaker 5: last year. There's just something about the way Josh Allen
- 1:33:46Speaker 5: can change a game, and you saw it even yesterday.
- 1:33:49Speaker 5: So coming out of the NFC, it would be easy
- 1:33:53Speaker 5: to pick the Rams. Of course, we have the hindsight
- 1:33:55Speaker 5: now of watching how they performed in Australia. I don't
- 1:33:58Speaker 5: know if that changes everything, but I think the Seahawks
- 1:34:03Speaker 5: are still really, really good. Once they get Sam Darnold back,
- 1:34:08Speaker 5: I do think they're a complete team. I really love
- 1:34:11Speaker 5: their rookie running back, Jadarian Price. I was a big
- 1:34:14Speaker 5: fan of his coming out of college. So I'd say
- 1:34:18Speaker 5: right now, if you're twisting my arm on, what is this,
- 1:34:21Speaker 5: September 14th, I think, I'd say it's Price Seahawks.
- 1:34:26Speaker 3: All right, I'll take it, even though I'm a Niners guy.
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: I think that, you know.
- 1:34:31Speaker 5: They look good.
- 1:34:32Speaker 3: They looked amazing.
- 1:34:34Speaker 4: And if you could keep that core healthy for an
- 1:34:37Speaker 4: entire year, I think they can continue to look amazing.
- 1:34:40Speaker 3: That's the big question, though.
- 1:34:42Speaker 5: Yep, that's the... You're right. In that game, it was
- 1:34:48Speaker 5: a bad game, obviously. Not unless you're a 49ers fan,
- 1:34:50Speaker 5: but it was just a bad overall game. But the 49ers,
- 1:34:52Speaker 5: I mean, the way they have... There's so much talent. And,
- 1:34:55Speaker 5: you know, just very quickly, it's remarkable because they flashed
- 1:34:58Speaker 5: the thing on the screen about how they're missing two
- 1:35:02Speaker 5: top wide receivers, Brandon Ayuk and Ricky Pearsall. And you're
- 1:35:06Speaker 5: getting a fraction of George Kittle out there. So it's
- 1:35:09Speaker 5: just amazing to me to think, like, what that offense
- 1:35:12Speaker 5: could actually look like if you had the full complement
- 1:35:15Speaker 5: of talent that you basically should have paid or drafted.
- 1:35:20Speaker 3: The Broncos have any Australia games this year?
- 1:35:22Speaker 4: I'd say that tongue-in-cheek because I know they don't have
- 1:35:25Speaker 4: one in actual Australia, but I haven't looked at.
- 1:35:27Speaker 3: The full schedule. Are they overseas at all in 2026? No.
- 1:35:31Speaker 5: No, they're everything in the United States, but they do
- 1:35:35Speaker 5: have an Australian punter.
- 1:35:37Speaker 3: If that helps. Good enough.
- 1:35:39Speaker 4: We're familiar with those guys from our University of Utah coverage.
- 1:35:43Speaker 4: Appreciate you giving us some time today. Obviously, I know
- 1:35:46Speaker 4: it's a busy time of year, so enjoy tonight's game.
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: We'll chat again soon.
- 1:35:51Speaker 5: All right, sounds good. Thanks for having me.

- 1:37:06Speaker 4: sent you.
- 1:37:09Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:37:10Speaker 4: Ben Shelton denied his bid for US Open glory, at
- 1:37:13Speaker 4: least here in 2026.
- 1:37:15Speaker 3: Bummer. Sad to see.
- 1:37:17Speaker 4: Didn't have to play until 3.30 a.m. in order to
- 1:37:20Speaker 4: come up with second place. Alexander Zverev wins this thing.
- 1:37:24Speaker 4: The violation of protocol comes... When immediately after winning and
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: in his victory speech, he turns around and he starts
- 1:37:32Speaker 4: hollering at Ben Shelton's girlfriend, Destiny Rodman. I did not like,
- 1:37:37Speaker 4: I did not like to see that. I know he's
- 1:37:40Speaker 4: being silly. It's like, Hey, don't you have a game today?
- 1:37:43Speaker 8: No, man.
- 1:37:45Speaker 4: After you beat me in a, in a tennis championship,
- 1:37:48Speaker 4: don't talk to my girlfriend on TV. Come on, Ben Shelton.
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: You can't let that happen right in front of you.
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: I said destiny.
- 1:38:01Speaker 9: Ben Shelton is one of the, one of the guys
- 1:38:03Speaker 9: with a lot of bravado to like celebrates every point
- 1:38:07Speaker 9: he scores and stuff. You would think he would have
- 1:38:11Speaker 9: shown a little bit more of that when the guy
- 1:38:14Speaker 9: who just beat him was talking smack to his girlfriend.
- 1:38:19Speaker 3: But I didn't like that. I didn't like that one bit.
- 1:38:23Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:38:25Speaker 4: You don't, you don't, come in and beat an American
- 1:38:30Speaker 4: on American soil. I then look back and Oh, the
- 1:38:33Speaker 4: girlfriend who's a member of the U S women's national team. Oh, Hey, well,
- 1:38:37Speaker 4: don't you have a game today, sweetie?
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: Fun joke. Not cool, man.
- 1:38:43Speaker 4: If I'm Shelton, I'm, I'm taking that second place trophy
- 1:38:47Speaker 4: and I'm just bashing him in the head with it.
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: Don't talk to my girlfriend. It's my lady, bro.
- 1:38:53Speaker 9: I mean, that's the kind of bravado he shows though.
- 1:38:55Speaker 9: So it's kind of, it's interesting that he didn't have
- 1:38:59Speaker 9: anything for Sveta in that, in that moment, but maybe
- 1:39:03Speaker 9: he was too caught off guard.
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:39:05Speaker 10: I don't know.
- 1:39:06Speaker 3: I didn't like it. I feel like it should be
- 1:39:08Speaker 3: frowned upon in tennis. It's a gentleman's sport.
- 1:39:12Speaker 14: Come on.
- 1:39:12Speaker 3: It's a sport for the upper crust of society.
- 1:39:16Speaker 4: Um, I'm sure you saw this because we've been fascinated
- 1:39:19Speaker 4: with the Clippers and then the salary cap circumvention case.
- 1:39:26Speaker 4: And can you trade Kawhi or can you not trade
- 1:39:29Speaker 4: Kawhi and what's going on here? And then a prohibitive penalty,
- 1:39:33Speaker 4: a really, really stiff penalty handed down to the Clippers
- 1:39:35Speaker 4: and Steve Ballmer. And then, of course, we talked about, well,
- 1:39:40Speaker 4: this is now another court case. This is now six
- 1:39:43Speaker 4: more months of legal fees being paid, I was surprised
- 1:39:47Speaker 4: to see that Steve Ballmer issued a statement saying he
- 1:39:50Speaker 4: has some sincere regrets and basically apologizing to the NBA
- 1:39:55Speaker 4: and to Clippers fans for engaging in this tomfoolery.
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: And he's just taking it on the chin. Ballmer, I.
- 1:40:03Speaker 4: And this probably is one of those things where you
- 1:40:05Speaker 4: had a conversation behind the scenes with the commissioner, and
- 1:40:10Speaker 4: they were just like, look, man, we can do this
- 1:40:11Speaker 4: if you want. We can battle this out, but it's
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: not going to be good for you. It's not going
- 1:40:16Speaker 4: to be good for us. You're not going to get
- 1:40:17Speaker 4: an all-star game anytime. You're not going to get anything good.
- 1:40:20Speaker 4: So why don't you just do this? You scratch our back.
- 1:40:24Speaker 4: We'll scratch yours. $ 30 million fine is nothing. It's totally
- 1:40:29Speaker 4: inconsequential for someone of Steve Ballmer's wealth. I think we,
- 1:40:34Speaker 4: I think we did the math last week and it's
- 1:40:36Speaker 4: like 10 days, 10 days of income for him.
- 1:40:41Speaker 3: So he can handle it. Must be nice.
- 1:40:45Speaker 4: And he is, instead of fighting this, he's just accepting
- 1:40:49Speaker 4: the penalty and turning the page and moving on. So
- 1:40:54Speaker 4: accepting that penalty is five draft picks down the drain.
- 1:40:59Speaker 4: The money we talked about this, the money is inconsequential
- 1:41:02Speaker 4: means nothing to him.
- 1:41:04Speaker 3: The five draft picks.
- 1:41:05Speaker 4: That's why he issued part of this apology to Clippers fans,
- 1:41:08Speaker 4: because he's saying, Oh, by the way, I'm sorry that
- 1:41:12Speaker 4: we did this because now your franchise stinks for the next,
- 1:41:17Speaker 4: whatever that's tough.
- 1:41:20Speaker 9: And we only got to one Western conference finals and
- 1:41:24Speaker 9: Kawhi Leonard wasn't even healthy for that Western conference finals that, that,
- 1:41:29Speaker 9: We lost five draft picks for that kind of success.
- 1:41:33Speaker 9: Getting to Western Conference Finals is good, but you expected
- 1:41:37Speaker 9: championship if you were a Clippers fan when you brought
- 1:41:40Speaker 9: in Kawhi Leonard, or a lot closer to one anyway. Yeah,
- 1:41:44Speaker 9: did not end up working out well for them. I'm
- 1:41:47Speaker 9: surprised that he issued this mea culpa. OC, I was
- 1:41:51Speaker 9: expecting him to dig in his heels. I will say this.
- 1:41:56Speaker 9: Conversation like what you just Speculated about might've happened with
- 1:42:01Speaker 9: Adam silver. And part of that conversation was, uh, Mr. Balmer, Steve,
- 1:42:07Speaker 9: you do realize that by suing us, you are also
- 1:42:11Speaker 9: suing yourself. Like the Clippers are part of the NBA.
- 1:42:16Speaker 9: The NBA is an association of owners. You really want
- 1:42:19Speaker 9: to do this. And I think he and his legal
- 1:42:22Speaker 9: team realizing they probably don't have much of a case anyway, went,
- 1:42:27Speaker 9: You know what?
- 1:42:28Speaker 3: You got a good point there, Mr. Silver.
- 1:42:30Speaker 4: Maybe we need to just eat this penalty. Here's a,
- 1:42:33Speaker 4: here's another wrinkle, a layer to the onion. Here's a
- 1:42:37Speaker 4: name you probably haven't thought about in a while. Danilo
- 1:42:39Speaker 4: Gallinari shout out. He went on a podcast, a Cresta
- 1:42:44Speaker 4: out the podcast and was very critical of the fact
- 1:42:49Speaker 4: that Kawhi Leonard only has to pay a $ 700, 000 fine.
- 1:42:53Speaker 4: His statement was he should pay all of that $ 50 million.
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: He changed the trajectory of my career and put me
- 1:43:00Speaker 4: in a difficult situation by sending me away from Los Angeles.
- 1:43:07Speaker 4: Gallinari left the Clippers in 2019, part of the trade
- 1:43:10Speaker 4: that brought Paul George to Los Angeles, and that move
- 1:43:15Speaker 4: made it so that Kawhi Leonard wanted to be a Clipper.
- 1:43:19Speaker 4: And this is the continued quote from Gallinari. What happened
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: to my NBA career wasn't decided by a general manager
- 1:43:24Speaker 4: or an owner, but by a player who decided that
- 1:43:27Speaker 4: team wasn't.
- 1:43:28Speaker 3: Good enough and wanted something else.
- 1:43:30Speaker 4: So when the 30 for 30 comes out, I want
- 1:43:35Speaker 4: the Danilo Gallinari interview. I want them sitting down in
- 1:43:40Speaker 4: a chair. I want him being like, yeah, I hate
- 1:43:43Speaker 4: Kawhi Leonard. And they'll be like, wait, what do you
- 1:43:46Speaker 4: have to do with Kawhi Leonard? And then the mental
- 1:43:49Speaker 4: gymnastics that a person does to blame something that really
- 1:43:55Speaker 4: isn't Kauai's fault on Kauai. And I don't know why
- 1:43:57Speaker 4: I'm defending Kauai here. Cause Kauai's I think Kauai kind of,
- 1:44:01Speaker 4: I loved watching him at San Diego state. I know
- 1:44:04Speaker 4: he's a great basketball player. I kind of hate what
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: Kauai Leonard has become in the NBA. And I never
- 1:44:11Speaker 4: thought I would. Cause he's like such a well-rounded player.
- 1:44:13Speaker 4: I kind of like hate his whole vibe now, but
- 1:44:17Speaker 4: the fact that Danilo Gallinari is using Kawhi Leonard as
- 1:44:21Speaker 4: the scapegoat for his own unsatisfied potential is really wild stuff.
- 1:44:26Speaker 3: Speaker 0 7, I mean, this is, this is like.
- 1:44:30Speaker 9: If, if Carl Malone and John Stockton did something that,
- 1:44:37Speaker 9: that adversely affected Brian Russell's career, like, it's just what, like,
- 1:44:43Speaker 9: what are we talking about here?
- 1:44:44Speaker 4: Like, Eric Weddle's the reason I had ever started at
- 1:44:49Speaker 4: the university of Utah.
- 1:44:53Speaker 3: What's very good.
- 1:44:54Speaker 14: What do you mean?
- 1:44:54Speaker 9: Like, it's just, do you go down Ari? Really good player.
- 1:45:00Speaker 9: He's not Paul George. They, the general manager, I think
- 1:45:05Speaker 9: doc rivers was the president and head coach at that time.
- 1:45:09Speaker 9: He not only was saying, let's make that trade to
- 1:45:12Speaker 9: get to appease Kawhi Leonard, but also because we can
- 1:45:16Speaker 9: get Paul George.
- 1:45:18Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 1:45:18Speaker 4: Danilo, even if Kawhi Leonard never says a word about
- 1:45:24Speaker 4: you or about the rest of that roster, everybody wants
- 1:45:27Speaker 4: Paul George instead of you.
- 1:45:29Speaker 3: I'm sorry. That's just how it is.
- 1:45:30Speaker 9: I mean, we we'd love you to be a sixth
- 1:45:33Speaker 9: man scoring type guy. That was, he was really good
- 1:45:36Speaker 9: in that kind of a role in the third or
- 1:45:38Speaker 9: fourth best score type thing, but he was not Paul George.
- 1:45:40Speaker 4: I now want like a Netflix series. That's all about
- 1:45:45Speaker 4: Players who blame other players for them not being as
- 1:45:48Speaker 4: good as they want it to be or their career
- 1:45:50Speaker 4: not going the way they.
- 1:45:50Speaker 3: Wanted it to.
- 1:45:52Speaker 9: Howard Isley is mad at John Stockton because he never
- 1:45:55Speaker 9: got to start for the jazz.
- 1:45:57Speaker 4: Welcome to beef. We'll just call it beef. It'll be
- 1:46:01Speaker 4: sponsored by Southern Steer and other beef providers. And it's
- 1:46:04Speaker 4: just players who have a beef with another player for
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: some real or perceived slight.
- 1:46:10Speaker 3: That's what I want.
- 1:46:11Speaker 9: Judd Bushler thinks he could have been a Hall of
- 1:46:13Speaker 9: Famer if not for Michael Jordan. I, cause I guarantee, right?
- 1:46:18Speaker 4: There's so many, we'll start it with the six Utah
- 1:46:21Speaker 4: players that felt like they would have had different careers
- 1:46:25Speaker 4: if they weren't forced to play through an injury.
- 1:46:27Speaker 9: Speaker 3, Sean O'Connell being the first one. No, not,
- 1:46:31Speaker 9: not the force to play through injury.
- 1:46:33Speaker 3: Sorry. That I was going back to the Eric Weddle joke.
- 1:46:36Speaker 4: They would have forced me to play through an injury.
- 1:46:38Speaker 4: I would die to be like, Hey, get back out there.
- 1:46:41Speaker 3: I've heard coach. I'm hurt. We need you on the field. Oh, sweet. Really?
- 1:46:47Speaker 3: Are you sure? Do you have a fever? Did something
- 1:46:49Speaker 3: happen to you?
- 1:46:50Speaker 4: Coach?
- 1:46:51Speaker 3: Is there a head injury? I need to worry about.
- 1:46:53Speaker 4: Are you talking to me? Oh, you're talking to the
- 1:46:56Speaker 4: guy behind me. You're talking to someone whose name is
- 1:46:58Speaker 4: actually Murphy.
- 1:46:59Speaker 3: Nevermind.
- 1:47:00Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:47:03Speaker 3: I knew it was Irish. Where do we, where do
- 1:47:05Speaker 3: we stand on this?
- 1:47:07Speaker 4: Steve Sarkeesian cold shouldering our beloved sports siren, Holly row
- 1:47:13Speaker 4: at the end of that Texas comeback over Ohio state.
- 1:47:16Speaker 9: I think it's important to know. And Chris Comrani and
- 1:47:20Speaker 9: the athletic did note this ESPN had some technical difficulties
- 1:47:25Speaker 9: with both sideline reporters. Each time that Sark was scheduled
- 1:47:29Speaker 9: to be interviewed with them one at halftime with Laura Rutledge,
- 1:47:33Speaker 9: I believe was the other one on the game. And
- 1:47:35Speaker 9: then post-game, of course, with Holly Rowe. So, like, he's
- 1:47:39Speaker 9: irked at this point that he's having to wait here. And, oh,
- 1:47:44Speaker 9: he's got such valuable time. Who's going to give the
- 1:47:46Speaker 9: halftime speech that led... Why are you making me talk
- 1:47:51Speaker 9: about this game, by the way? I hated this game.
- 1:47:53Speaker 9: But it's... That's an important context, I think. The major
- 1:47:57Speaker 9: takeaway for you is that Texas won.
- 1:48:00Speaker 3: And that's important. How dare you.
- 1:48:02Speaker 11: Look, he.
- 1:48:05Speaker 3: I know this is not popular. I work, I work
- 1:48:07Speaker 3: in television sometimes. All right.
- 1:48:10Speaker 4: Occasionally our executive producer, like after somebody wins a fight,
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: a lot of times the winner gets an interview, right?
- 1:48:18Speaker 11: Okay.
- 1:48:21Speaker 4: We've got the headset on. They'll pop down into my
- 1:48:24Speaker 4: ear or into the ear of Dan Hardy. Who's my
- 1:48:26Speaker 4: color analyst. And they'll be like, do you want to
- 1:48:29Speaker 4: interview this guy for the broadcast? The decision, the yes
- 1:48:35Speaker 4: or no from me comes 100% from, is the conversation
- 1:48:39Speaker 4: going to be interesting? Is the conversation going to be
- 1:48:42Speaker 4: any good? If the answer is yes, yeah, if we
- 1:48:46Speaker 4: have time, let's do it. If I know that that
- 1:48:49Speaker 4: person never gives you any good answers, if I know
- 1:48:52Speaker 4: that that person has a language barrier that creates a
- 1:48:56Speaker 4: clunky exchange, if I know that there's some kind of
- 1:48:59Speaker 4: a situation where they've got some beef against each us
- 1:49:05Speaker 4: in the media and don't want to talk. And they're
- 1:49:07Speaker 4: going to be short. The answer is no, I don't
- 1:49:10Speaker 4: want to do the interview. I don't want the interview
- 1:49:11Speaker 4: to be part of a telecast. There are plenty of
- 1:49:14Speaker 4: head coaches and Sark is now going to be one
- 1:49:16Speaker 4: of them. There are plenty of head coaches that don't
- 1:49:19Speaker 4: want to do this, that don't give you any value
- 1:49:22Speaker 4: in these. Like if it's Kurt Cignetti, every single time
- 1:49:26Speaker 4: talk to Kurt Cignetti, because he's got like this dead pan.
- 1:49:29Speaker 4: He's going to give you something funny. He's going to
- 1:49:31Speaker 4: be a total savage about it. Give me that 30
- 1:49:34Speaker 4: seconds of Kurt Cignetti. If it's Kalani Satake.
- 1:49:37Speaker 11: Yes.
- 1:49:38Speaker 3: If it's Morgan Scali.
- 1:49:39Speaker 10: Yes.
- 1:49:40Speaker 3: I don't need to hear from Kyle Whittingham anymore.
- 1:49:43Speaker 4: He's not good in those scenarios.
- 1:49:46Speaker 3: He just isn't.
- 1:49:47Speaker 4: I don't want, I don't want the coach and you're
- 1:49:50Speaker 4: on a television broadcast. These people have access to the
- 1:49:54Speaker 4: coaches and They know how the coaches are feeling. They
- 1:49:57Speaker 4: know what the coaches are thinking. They know how the
- 1:49:59Speaker 4: coaches have a relationship with the media or don't. I
- 1:50:01Speaker 4: don't need a sideline reporter ever approaching bill Belichick again, ever, ever, ever.
- 1:50:07Speaker 4: Instead of doing it with the head coach, knowing that
- 1:50:10Speaker 4: you have an obligation to give me something that's part
- 1:50:12Speaker 4: of the broadcast, go find the player instead. I Holly
- 1:50:16Speaker 4: row was put in a situation there because of those
- 1:50:19Speaker 4: technical difficulties. That's kind of a no win for her.
- 1:50:22Speaker 4: She's a consummate pro. She's one of the best in
- 1:50:24Speaker 4: the business. Weirdly, there were people kind of like running
- 1:50:27Speaker 4: a victory lap around her getting the cold shoulder because
- 1:50:30Speaker 4: apparently she's made some enemies along the way, which is
- 1:50:32Speaker 4: very interesting to see.
- 1:50:34Speaker 3: However, that's our gal. She's a Ute. Steve Sarkeesian, foul
- 1:50:40Speaker 3: on you. Grievance against you for doing that. But it's
- 1:50:43Speaker 3: just because he's a BYU guy, OC. That's all it is.
- 1:50:45Speaker 3: But also, like, I think that it's now incumbent upon.
- 1:50:51Speaker 4: the producer, the director, and maybe even sometimes on the
- 1:50:54Speaker 4: report of themselves to just be like, I know this
- 1:50:57Speaker 4: person is going to give me crap. I'm going to
- 1:50:59Speaker 4: go find someone who doesn't mind being on camera.
- 1:51:02Speaker 3: Someone who gets to talk for the first time on camera.
- 1:51:05Speaker 4: I'd rather hear from the defensive coordinator who gave us
- 1:51:08Speaker 4: that stop.
- 1:51:09Speaker 3: I know you can't, they're usually in the booth after
- 1:51:11Speaker 3: a game or whatever.
- 1:51:12Speaker 9: Hey, go, go find Arch Manning, go, you know, but
- 1:51:16Speaker 9: also there's some restraints from the bosses. Like, no, we
- 1:51:19Speaker 9: only do head coaches, whatever you'd you'd make the best
- 1:51:22Speaker 9: of it.
- 1:51:22Speaker 3: They're the only ones with media obligation in their contract. Yeah.
- 1:51:26Speaker 4: So Sark, I guess is probably on some technical level
- 1:51:30Speaker 4: in violation of that by not wanting to talk to her,
- 1:51:33Speaker 4: but who cares, man? I, yeah.
- 1:51:35Speaker 9: I, I feel bad for Holly that she was kind
- 1:51:38Speaker 9: of victimized by this, but I also understand why Sark
- 1:51:44Speaker 9: might've felt like he did to just be really short
- 1:51:47Speaker 9: with Holly, cut her off and, and then walk away
- 1:51:50Speaker 9: because I can understand being annoyed at like, Hey, I
- 1:51:54Speaker 9: don't like to do these anyway. And you made me
- 1:51:57Speaker 9: wait really long. Both times. I just want to go
- 1:52:00Speaker 9: celebrate this win or talk to my guys in the
- 1:52:03Speaker 9: halftime locker room.
- 1:52:05Speaker 4: Speaker 2, 6 0 5 2. I was a COBS
- 1:52:07Speaker 4: major at the U with Holly row. I really could
- 1:52:09Speaker 4: have been something if it were not for her, but
- 1:52:13Speaker 4: the Danilo Gallinari take of sports media.
- 1:52:17Speaker 3: All right. We're over time.
- 1:52:18Speaker 4: We got to come back and talk with Zach Moss,
- 1:52:21Speaker 4: who was on the sideline for another great broadcast and
- 1:52:24Speaker 4: another big win for the university of Utah. We'll talk
- 1:52:26Speaker 4: with the Utah football legend, Zach Moss next on the
- 1:52:29Speaker 4: Sean O'Connell show ESPN, 700 92, one FM.
- 1:52:31Speaker 3: We don't need no education.
- 1:52:36Speaker 10: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 1:52:40Speaker 10: the best youth football coverage. Here's OC from the Murdoch
- 1:52:43Speaker 10: Hyundai Studio of.
- 1:52:49Speaker 4: ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:52:51Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 1:52:52Speaker 4: Your favorite part of the Utah win over Arkansas. Maybe
- 1:52:55Speaker 4: your least favorite part as well. The things you liked
- 1:52:58Speaker 4: and the things you didn't like about youths going 2-0.
- 1:53:02Speaker 4: Impressive performance. I'll tell you, we're going to We're going
- 1:53:06Speaker 4: to switch up the schedule a little bit here. Zach
- 1:53:08Speaker 4: Moss has to push for another 15 minutes or so.
- 1:53:11Speaker 4: So Zach Moss at one 30, instead of here at one,
- 1:53:14Speaker 4: we've got some tickets to give away at the end
- 1:53:18Speaker 4: of the show. Five finger death punch is coming to
- 1:53:20Speaker 4: the Utah first credit union amphitheater on September 22nd. So
- 1:53:24Speaker 4: next week, five finger death punch to Utah first credit
- 1:53:29Speaker 4: union amphitheater. I'll have two tickets to give away at
- 1:53:32Speaker 4: about one 45.
- 1:53:33Speaker 3: So about 30 minutes from now.
- 1:53:34Speaker 4: So Zach Moss in 15 minutes and 30 minutes, we'll
- 1:53:37Speaker 4: give away some tickets. Your reaction to the Utah football game, eight, seven, seven, three, five, three,
- 1:53:45Speaker 4: zero 700 on the text line, the phone line at
- 1:53:47Speaker 4: real OC sports on Twitter. I'll tell you one thing
- 1:53:52Speaker 4: that was really incredible. Halftime, Eric Weddle inducted into the
- 1:53:57Speaker 4: Ring of Honor. Great to be there. Great to see it.
- 1:54:00Speaker 4: Great to see his parents there, his kids there, with
- 1:54:03Speaker 4: the exception of one daughter who's at the Acrobatics Internationals
- 1:54:07Speaker 4: in Italy. Actually, the Weddles were flying from Utah to
- 1:54:12Speaker 4: join her, which is really cool.
- 1:54:14Speaker 9: Yeah, I think the big meet or whatever the event's
- 1:54:19Speaker 9: called is tomorrow. So they're probably in Italy joining themselves.
- 1:54:23Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:54:24Speaker 3: So good stuff. Great stuff.
- 1:54:26Speaker 4: The drone show. Let me tell you, I now have
- 1:54:30Speaker 4: a goal in life. I don't know how I will
- 1:54:32Speaker 4: ever possibly achieve it. I have a new goal that
- 1:54:37Speaker 4: I want a drone show featuring me.
- 1:54:39Speaker 3: You know how sweet it was? Like the drones.
- 1:54:47Speaker 4: Silhouetting Eric Weddle in like, you know, football form, number
- 1:54:54Speaker 4: 32 Jersey. Then they did it. I think they took
- 1:54:57Speaker 4: his PR photo from when he had the Mohawk. They
- 1:54:59Speaker 4: did that. I, it looked like him drones doing an
- 1:55:04Speaker 4: outline in the night sky that looked like the actual guy.
- 1:55:08Speaker 4: It was, I want one of those. Now I want
- 1:55:09Speaker 4: a drone show commemorating me in some way.
- 1:55:13Speaker 9: Speaker 2, next time the PFL is in Salt Lake
- 1:55:15Speaker 9: city is what should we expect?
- 1:55:17Speaker 3: I don't I don't think so. I don't think they
- 1:55:20Speaker 3: would pull it off, but.
- 1:55:21Speaker 9: Or at UFC in a, in a few weeks, shout
- 1:55:24Speaker 9: out the center. We get a local UFC legend. Shout
- 1:55:28Speaker 9: out to everyone involved in that drone show. That was
- 1:55:31Speaker 9: really fantastic. Got a chance to talk with him at
- 1:55:35Speaker 9: halftime and a little bit after the game, a little
- 1:55:39Speaker 9: bit before the game. He's, you know, he's that guy.
- 1:55:42Speaker 4: He's always going to be that guy signing autographs, being here,
- 1:55:46Speaker 4: showed his appreciation for the legacy. It was great to
- 1:55:49Speaker 4: see his parents, you know, his dad, his dad's like this,
- 1:55:52Speaker 4: you know, like typical, like dad guy, you know, and
- 1:55:54Speaker 4: he is looking up and watching his son's name be
- 1:55:57Speaker 4: unveiled behind that little black sheet and the, you know,
- 1:56:01Speaker 4: tears in the eyes. I'm like, man, what a cool
- 1:56:02Speaker 4: thing to give to your parents. What a great gift
- 1:56:06Speaker 4: for him to be able to bestow for his parents.
- 1:56:08Speaker 4: He did a wonderful job raising him and his sister.
- 1:56:11Speaker 4: They're both great people, but like, what a cool thing.
- 1:56:15Speaker 4: that you get to make your parents feel that way.
- 1:56:17Speaker 4: So it was really, really neat to see the whole thing.
- 1:56:20Speaker 4: It makes me think of Weddle's pretty active on social media.
- 1:56:23Speaker 4: As we know, he posted a picture of he and
- 1:56:26Speaker 4: his dad at the super bowl that he won.
- 1:56:28Speaker 3: It makes me think of that too. Like the, like he's.
- 1:56:31Speaker 9: Given his dad so far to like unbelievable moments as
- 1:56:36Speaker 9: a dad to be proud of your son and just
- 1:56:39Speaker 9: be like, you go dude. And be able to be
- 1:56:42Speaker 9: with him on the field after he wins the Superbowl
- 1:56:44Speaker 9: before the Superbowl, however often he was during that game
- 1:56:48Speaker 9: and a ring of honor. And hopefully OC gets another
- 1:56:53Speaker 9: proud dad moment when he, if, and when he gets
- 1:56:55Speaker 9: elected to the pro football hall of fame in Canton.
- 1:56:57Speaker 3: It'd be really cool.
- 1:56:58Speaker 4: One of his, his old like childhood friends, high school
- 1:57:01Speaker 4: buddies made the trip. His NFL agent made the trip
- 1:57:07Speaker 4: and people don't know is I think Eric's, as far
- 1:57:11Speaker 4: as I'm aware, he's Eric's like best friend from the
- 1:57:13Speaker 4: Utah football days was a guy who was like me.
- 1:57:17Speaker 3: Basically he was a walk-on.
- 1:57:18Speaker 4: He was a snow college guy that came up, never
- 1:57:20Speaker 4: really got to play whatever, but he's not, it's not
- 1:57:23Speaker 4: like Eric's best friend on the team was some mega star.
- 1:57:27Speaker 3: It was, it was a walk-on dude.
- 1:57:30Speaker 4: And he was out there on the field and I
- 1:57:32Speaker 4: was like, Oh, congratulations. Congratulations on your induction into the
- 1:57:36Speaker 4: ring of honor. You know, it's like, it's such a
- 1:57:38Speaker 4: cool thing that he involves. people on every level. And so, yeah,
- 1:57:45Speaker 4: good job on everyone for standing up, making their noise,
- 1:57:48Speaker 4: showing their appreciation for Eric Weddle.
- 1:57:50Speaker 9: The, uh, did you hear, uh, Sly? So the, in
- 1:57:55Speaker 9: the pregame network pregame with Bill Riley, Stevenson, Sylvester, Zach Moss,
- 1:58:00Speaker 9: they got to interview Weddle and Sly told the story
- 1:58:06Speaker 9: of a fake punt that Weddle, uh, executed. He wasn't
- 1:58:12Speaker 9: a punter, but he was part of a fake punt play.
- 1:58:16Speaker 9: Gets the first down, and Sly, it's a Raven-Steelers game,
- 1:58:20Speaker 9: and Sly is like, He sniffed it out.
- 1:58:23Speaker 3: He's on the other side of the series.
- 1:58:24Speaker 9: He sniffed it out immediately, but Weddle still pulled it
- 1:58:27Speaker 9: off and he comes up to him and Weddle just
- 1:58:30Speaker 9: gives him that Eric Weddle laugh.
- 1:58:32Speaker 3: Like, ha ha ha. That's great.
- 1:58:37Speaker 4: Yeah. I, I can't imagine all of the ways that
- 1:58:41Speaker 4: that guy's pulled one over on opponents in the past.
- 1:58:43Speaker 4: So that was a, that was a highlight of the
- 1:58:46Speaker 4: game for me. The, the drone halftime show. With our guy,
- 1:58:49Speaker 4: Eric Weddle. It was good to see him in person.
- 1:58:53Speaker 4: Great stuff. This is from Jay on the text line.
- 1:58:57Speaker 4: I've seen Eric Weddle at Utes Games wearing a Super
- 1:58:59Speaker 4: Bowl ring. Noticed that he wasn't wearing it on Saturday.
- 1:59:03Speaker 3: Yeah, he's humble. What a great guy. And Jay also
- 1:59:08Speaker 3: seconds he wants to see me as a drone show.
- 1:59:13Speaker 4: Thank you from 4207 also. So we've got at least
- 1:59:15Speaker 4: two people think that I should get my own drone show.
- 1:59:17Speaker 4: I don't know how many drones, because like somebody like Weddle,
- 1:59:22Speaker 4: he justifies like a several hundred drone show. That's like
- 1:59:27Speaker 4: 32-bit graphics.
- 1:59:28Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 1:59:30Speaker 4: Maybe we could muster up 40 or 50 drones to
- 1:59:33Speaker 4: draw like a crude outline.
- 1:59:34Speaker 3: Of me, just a silhouette in the night sky. And
- 1:59:37Speaker 3: everyone look outside right now, outside the ESPN.
- 1:59:42Speaker 4: If you're, if you're anywhere near Broadway studios right now,
- 1:59:45Speaker 4: we have eight drones.
- 1:59:46Speaker 3: It's funny. You say that OC someday. All right. What
- 1:59:52Speaker 3: I liked, what I didn't like.
- 1:59:53Speaker 4: Caden says, I did not like birds hurdle bird bird
- 1:59:58Speaker 4: tried to go airborne and it was kind of like,
- 2:00:01Speaker 4: it was, he was going out of bounds. The hurdle
- 2:00:04Speaker 4: took him out of bounds. So you can't hurdle when
- 2:00:06Speaker 4: you're going to land out of bounds. If you're going
- 2:00:08Speaker 4: to hurdle, you got to hurdle. So you land inbounds
- 2:00:10Speaker 4: unless it's like, you absolutely need to get that ball
- 2:00:13Speaker 4: to break the plane.
- 2:00:15Speaker 3: And so you'll do anything.
- 2:00:16Speaker 4: You'll go land air or sea in order to get
- 2:00:19Speaker 4: that ball over the line to gain. But he was
- 2:00:21Speaker 4: kind of, he was going to land out of bounds anyway.
- 2:00:23Speaker 4: So I'm with you bird. Don't, Don't elevate yourself and
- 2:00:27Speaker 4: potentially get upended.
- 2:00:28Speaker 3: If you're just going to land out of bounds, it.
- 2:00:30Speaker 9: Was the poor man's true mess to maker hurdle. Is
- 2:00:33Speaker 9: that what you're saying? Or it's like he messed a
- 2:00:35Speaker 9: maker in the Oklahoma state game had to.
- 2:00:37Speaker 3: Watch the end zone. Go watch that drew mess.
- 2:00:40Speaker 4: The maker clearly there was no, and I admire this
- 2:00:45Speaker 4: from a quarterback. There was absolutely zero calculation of from
- 2:00:49Speaker 4: him on whether or not I'm going to be able
- 2:00:51Speaker 4: to land this thing safely. He just leapt face forward.
- 2:00:55Speaker 4: It was effectively what he took off. He it's like
- 2:01:00Speaker 4: belly flopping from the high dive. You know, a lot
- 2:01:03Speaker 4: of guys, when they go to do that, that airborne dive,
- 2:01:06Speaker 4: when they try to hurdle over somebody, they're already kind
- 2:01:09Speaker 4: of twisting their body in a way where maybe everything's
- 2:01:12Speaker 4: going to be okay. He just belly flopped. landed and
- 2:01:19Speaker 4: all of his teams want to celebrate with them. They're,
- 2:01:21Speaker 4: they're coming over and he's like gingerly picking.
- 2:01:24Speaker 3: Himself up off the turf. Like, hold on, hold on.
- 2:01:27Speaker 4: Probably knocked the wind out of himself, but you sacrifice
- 2:01:30Speaker 4: your body. You make a play like that. Oklahoma state
- 2:01:34Speaker 4: legend already because he beat Oregon. Oregon came into the season.
- 2:01:38Speaker 4: A lot of people thought that this was Oregon's year
- 2:01:41Speaker 4: to win a national championship.
- 2:01:43Speaker 3: It is clearly not. Oregon's year to win a national championship.
- 2:01:47Speaker 4: If they continue to play anything like they did against
- 2:01:50Speaker 4: Oklahoma state, Oklahoma state now is one of those scheduled
- 2:01:54Speaker 4: games for everyone in the big 12, where you're like,
- 2:01:57Speaker 4: which version am I going to get? Am I going
- 2:02:00Speaker 4: to get the version that got physically bodied by Tulsa?
- 2:02:03Speaker 4: Or am I going to get the version that beat
- 2:02:05Speaker 4: up Oregon? Because those are two, it's a Dr.
- 2:02:08Speaker 3: Jekyll, Mr. Hyde scenario keeps things interesting. I'll tell you
- 2:02:12Speaker 3: that I do.
- 2:02:13Speaker 9: I do feel like because I've been so publicly anti
- 2:02:17Speaker 9: the preseason hype that the Cowboys got Oklahoma state got
- 2:02:21Speaker 9: this year. I do have, I do feel like I
- 2:02:23Speaker 9: need to say publicly credit to them. Great win, obviously,
- 2:02:27Speaker 9: but I'm still not ready to say that they're going
- 2:02:30Speaker 9: to be what people like Joe Klatt said they would
- 2:02:32Speaker 9: be preseason. Like, like you just said, they, they beat Oregon,
- 2:02:36Speaker 9: but they also lost to Tulsa. So it's Still remains
- 2:02:40Speaker 9: to be seen if they're going to live up to
- 2:02:41Speaker 9: that hype.
- 2:02:42Speaker 3: But I do have to say, hey, you proved me wrong.
- 2:02:44Speaker 3: It's Oregon for sure. Way to go.
- 2:02:46Speaker 4: Derek is saying that maybe if I win a Super
- 2:02:48Speaker 4: Bowl and receive legend status in the program, then a
- 2:02:51Speaker 4: drone shows a possibility.
- 2:02:53Speaker 3: Maybe you.
- 2:02:54Speaker 9: Yeah, I would have to at this point. I would
- 2:02:57Speaker 9: have to become a coach. You'd be after you'd have
- 2:03:00Speaker 9: to be Morgan successor.
- 2:03:01Speaker 4: Maybe I would have to spend the next 20 years
- 2:03:04Speaker 4: building a coaching resume that would, would potentially justify a
- 2:03:09Speaker 4: drone show.
- 2:03:10Speaker 9: Sean O'Connell, the coach that leads the youths to the
- 2:03:12Speaker 9: national champion.
- 2:03:13Speaker 4: You know, I, you know how I really hope gets
- 2:03:15Speaker 4: in it like a super mega elaborate drone show at
- 2:03:18Speaker 4: some point. In fact, I'm going to advocate for this
- 2:03:20Speaker 4: instead of a statue. I know people don't like to
- 2:03:23Speaker 4: hear it. Michigan did win though. I want someday for
- 2:03:29Speaker 4: Kyle Whittingham to have to sit in a lawn chair,
- 2:03:32Speaker 4: like Eric Weddle did in the end zone while there's
- 2:03:34Speaker 4: a light and drone show for Kyle Whittingham.
- 2:03:38Speaker 3: Cause you know, he's just like, what the heck, what
- 2:03:41Speaker 3: are these things? What is this? I don't want this.
- 2:03:46Speaker 4: I want that to be the way we memorialize the
- 2:03:49Speaker 4: career of Kyle Whittingham. When the time is appropriate, when
- 2:03:52Speaker 4: the sour feelings have worn off, bring him back. Whole
- 2:03:57Speaker 4: Whittingham clan standing in the end zone behind him. You
- 2:04:00Speaker 4: put that weird lawn chair out there. I don't know
- 2:04:03Speaker 4: whose decision that was. And you're just like.
- 2:04:05Speaker 7: All right, watch.
- 2:04:07Speaker 4: And he's like confused by why did you choose a
- 2:04:09Speaker 4: drone show?
- 2:04:10Speaker 3: I want that now. Absolutely. By the way, you mentioned
- 2:04:15Speaker 3: that team winning that he coaches.
- 2:04:17Speaker 9: Now, did you see him getting really salty with the
- 2:04:20Speaker 9: reporters about when they asked about, so how do you
- 2:04:23Speaker 9: feel any differently about Bryce Underwood now? And he's like, well,
- 2:04:25Speaker 9: I never felt differently. It was you guys. Well, yeah,
- 2:04:29Speaker 9: there's a little revisionist stuff there.
- 2:04:31Speaker 3: He did. He did.
- 2:04:32Speaker 4: I mean, he's savvy enough at this point in his career.
- 2:04:35Speaker 4: He said, look, we didn't prepare Bryce with our game
- 2:04:37Speaker 4: plan for success. That was our fault.
- 2:04:39Speaker 3: And that's the right thing to do as a coach.
- 2:04:41Speaker 4: When bright credit to Bryce Underwood, by the way, He
- 2:04:46Speaker 4: really responded to the critics. And if he felt the
- 2:04:49Speaker 4: criticism was coming from inside the building and still responded
- 2:04:52Speaker 4: that way, even more of a testament to his resilience
- 2:04:56Speaker 4: and his mental toughness because he played well against Oklahoma.
- 2:05:00Speaker 3: He made plays.
- 2:05:01Speaker 4: He did the things he needed to do to silence
- 2:05:04Speaker 4: the narrative about him not being what everyone thinks he
- 2:05:08Speaker 4: should be. You know who that belongs to now? That's
- 2:05:10Speaker 4: now on Dante Moore. That's on the Oregon quarterback. Everything
- 2:05:15Speaker 4: that we were saying last week about Bryce Underwood, now
- 2:05:18Speaker 4: say about Dante Moore. What happened to you, Dante Moore?
- 2:05:21Speaker 4: You're supposed to be this big-time playmaker. You're supposed to
- 2:05:24Speaker 4: be this guy who can deliver a championship for Phil
- 2:05:28Speaker 4: Knight and for the Ducks, and he's compensated at pretty
- 2:05:30Speaker 4: much the same level, as far as we know, as
- 2:05:32Speaker 4: Bryce Underwood, maybe even more so on a single-season basis.
- 2:05:38Speaker 3: These guys have so much.
- 2:05:39Speaker 4: To live up to, and of course we're critical of them,
- 2:05:41Speaker 4: and it's probably silly sitting in a chair in Salt
- 2:05:43Speaker 4: Lake City But goodness, like Bryce Underwood played well. I,
- 2:05:50Speaker 4: you know, you know what the thing I maybe the
- 2:05:52Speaker 4: whole football weekend, my biggest dislike from the college football
- 2:05:56Speaker 4: weekend was watching John Henry daily in a Michigan uniform.
- 2:06:02Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 2:06:02Speaker 3: Good game too. He is a monster. He had three
- 2:06:06Speaker 3: and a half tackles for loss.
- 2:06:08Speaker 4: He was the second leading tackler in the game.
- 2:06:10Speaker 3: He had just a big boy. I'm better than you sack.
- 2:06:14Speaker 4: John Henry Daly, that's two weeks in a row now
- 2:06:19Speaker 4: that you just had to be painfully reminded that the
- 2:06:22Speaker 4: transfer portal giveth and taketh away because he transferred to Utah,
- 2:06:29Speaker 4: did great things at Utah, and now he's plying his
- 2:06:33Speaker 4: trade at Michigan. I had questions about whether or not
- 2:06:36Speaker 4: John Henry Daly coming off that injury, if anything was
- 2:06:40Speaker 4: going to translate for him. What an idiot I am. I...
- 2:06:45Speaker 4: Most of what we saw from the University of Utah
- 2:06:47Speaker 4: I liked. Something I did not like was seeing one
- 2:06:49Speaker 4: of the guys that should be in a Utah uniform
- 2:06:51Speaker 4: or could be in a Utah uniform playing like that.
- 2:06:54Speaker 4: Holy cow.
- 2:06:56Speaker 3: He's a beast.
- 2:06:57Speaker 9: Got a little breaking news as of about 25 minutes ago.
- 2:07:02Speaker 3: Kawhi Leonard.
- 2:07:05Speaker 9: The trade has been agreed to.
- 2:07:07Speaker 3: So do you think that maybe, just maybe, Ballmer.
- 2:07:11Speaker 4: deciding not to pursue any kind of crazy legal action
- 2:07:14Speaker 4: and keep this thing going. Do you think that maybe
- 2:07:17Speaker 4: helps smooth out the opportunity for everyone?
- 2:07:19Speaker 3: All parties involved to say, let's just make it go away.
- 2:07:23Speaker 4: The NBA is like, you say, sorry, we'll let the
- 2:07:28Speaker 4: trade and everything else go through. We won't harass Toronto.
- 2:07:31Speaker 4: We won't harass Kauai and everyone can move on. It
- 2:07:34Speaker 4: just feels like the settling of the waters is a
- 2:07:37Speaker 4: very deliberate thing.
- 2:07:40Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:07:40Speaker 3: Not, Not official yet.
- 2:07:42Speaker 9: The Shams is saying they're scheduling a trade call. We
- 2:07:47Speaker 9: still don't know who works in the Clippers front office
- 2:07:51Speaker 9: right now because of the suspensions. So someone who knows
- 2:07:57Speaker 9: how to finalize trades at that level. is going to
- 2:08:01Speaker 9: need to be put in place but uh the it's
- 2:08:06Speaker 9: been agreed to and presumably we'll move forward soon.
- 2:08:11Speaker 4: All right zach boss next here on the sean o'connell
- 2:08:13Speaker 4: show we'll talk with the utah football legend about another
- 2:08:16Speaker 4: big win at rice eccles ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 2:08:19Speaker 3: You tuned to the.
- 2:08:25Speaker 10: Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN
- 2:08:30Speaker 10: 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:08:37Speaker 4: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. In 15 minutes,
- 2:08:42Speaker 4: we're going to give away A pair of tickets to
- 2:08:45Speaker 4: Five Finger Death Punch at the Utah First Credit Union Amphitheater.
- 2:08:48Speaker 4: I will have a trivia question for you. Stay tuned
- 2:08:52Speaker 4: for an opportunity to win some tickets. Right now, we
- 2:08:55Speaker 4: welcome the Utah football legend, NFL veteran, Zach Moss, who,
- 2:08:59Speaker 4: of course, is now roaming the radio sidelines on the
- 2:09:02Speaker 4: official Utah football broadcast.
- 2:09:04Speaker 3: Zach Moss, welcome to the show. How are you, sir?
- 2:09:08Speaker 4: Good, good.
- 2:09:08Speaker 8: How are you?
- 2:09:09Speaker 3: I'm doing great. Big win again, obviously, up there.
- 2:09:12Speaker 4: At Rice Echo Stadium for this Utah football team over
- 2:09:15Speaker 4: at SEC squad in Arkansas that really, I mean, long
- 2:09:20Speaker 4: first offensive drive for Arkansas, finished with three points. And
- 2:09:24Speaker 4: after that, they disappeared all the way until the fourth
- 2:09:27Speaker 4: when the backups were in. It was an absolute demolition
- 2:09:31Speaker 4: by the University of Utah of those Arkansas Razorbacks. Do
- 2:09:35Speaker 4: you have a favorite thing from the game? Was there
- 2:09:38Speaker 4: something that really jumped out as the biggest positive for you?
- 2:09:42Speaker 15: I think, you know, I think the trenches really showed
- 2:09:47Speaker 15: up Saturday night on both sides of the ball for us. Obviously,
- 2:09:53Speaker 15: you know, there's been a lot of talk about the
- 2:09:55Speaker 15: offensive line and things of that nature. And those guys
- 2:09:59Speaker 15: did an astounding job of, you know, really, really, really controlling,
- 2:10:05Speaker 15: you know, what we were able to do, right, and
- 2:10:08Speaker 15: all the different formations and giving these guys the the
- 2:10:11Speaker 15: playmakers space to operate and get out on the edges
- 2:10:16Speaker 15: and be able to run between the gaps. And on
- 2:10:18Speaker 15: the defensive side of the ball, we stopped, we held
- 2:10:21Speaker 15: them to, I want to say, 60-something rushing yards, right?
- 2:10:26Speaker 15: And I think four more sacks, right? I think the
- 2:10:28Speaker 15: defensive line really, really show, right, how good they actually
- 2:10:33Speaker 15: can be, right, versus a SEC school. No matter who
- 2:10:37Speaker 15: it may be, it's still an SEC school. And, you know,
- 2:10:41Speaker 15: I love to see just how quickly they jumped back
- 2:10:43Speaker 15: on top. Like I said, it was a little slow, essentially,
- 2:10:47Speaker 15: to some degree, in the first quarter. But, you know,
- 2:10:51Speaker 15: the offense exploded with 22 points, and the defense did
- 2:10:54Speaker 15: an amazing job of just closing them out.
- 2:10:58Speaker 3: Way shot, another great game.
- 2:11:00Speaker 4: As a running back, I lean on your expertise when
- 2:11:03Speaker 4: we talk about that position. only 10 carries for him and,
- 2:11:09Speaker 4: you know, five plus yards per carry in those carries,
- 2:11:11Speaker 4: but he's very active in the passing game. And so
- 2:11:15Speaker 4: he totals like whatever it is, 18 touches in a
- 2:11:17Speaker 4: game and a bunch of, you know, a hundred yards
- 2:11:20Speaker 4: in a game and several touchdowns in a game.
- 2:11:22Speaker 3: Does it matter for.
- 2:11:24Speaker 4: A running back, whether they're the receptions or carries, as
- 2:11:28Speaker 4: long as you're getting the ball?
- 2:11:32Speaker 15: Um, sometimes I would say, right. I think way Sean
- 2:11:35Speaker 15: is very unique in the style that, you know, we
- 2:11:40Speaker 15: can only give him 10 carries and he can be very,
- 2:11:42Speaker 15: very impactful to the game, right? You know, obviously the
- 2:11:46Speaker 15: first play of the game, calling his number, right, on
- 2:11:50Speaker 15: a 50-yard pass, and he comes up with the ball, right?
- 2:11:53Speaker 15: Not a lot of backs can do that, right? And
- 2:11:55Speaker 15: I think that's what you see in the next level.
- 2:11:57Speaker 15: I'm sure he's challenged himself on that as well because,
- 2:12:01Speaker 15: you know, at the next level, you can't just be,
- 2:12:05Speaker 15: a runner, right? You got to be able to do
- 2:12:06Speaker 15: a lot of different things. And pass catching the ball
- 2:12:10Speaker 15: is where the really, really dynamic guys are. And he's
- 2:12:14Speaker 15: been able to show that now in the last two
- 2:12:15Speaker 15: games as well. And I think that is a huge
- 2:12:19Speaker 15: part to the offense. And, you know, I'm sure he'll
- 2:12:21Speaker 15: have his games where, you know, there's 15, there's 20
- 2:12:24Speaker 15: carries and You know, maybe it's a little bit lesser
- 2:12:26Speaker 15: on the offensive side of the ball when it comes
- 2:12:28Speaker 15: to catching for him. But right now he's being able
- 2:12:31Speaker 15: to put a lot of different things and showcasing that
- 2:12:35Speaker 15: right now.
- 2:12:36Speaker 4: Kevin McGiven is now second game in a row. He's
- 2:12:38Speaker 4: gone into the bag a little bit and given us
- 2:12:40Speaker 4: some unique things. That play you just referenced, which is
- 2:12:44Speaker 4: a double pass throwback from Bird all the way across
- 2:12:47Speaker 4: the field to Weishan for that big long completion.
- 2:12:51Speaker 3: You also had.
- 2:12:52Speaker 4: The handoff option run with the two quarterback system. As
- 2:12:58Speaker 4: a guy who played this game at the highest level,
- 2:13:00Speaker 4: I mean, you've seen a lot of playbooks. What do
- 2:13:04Speaker 4: you think of this one and the glimpses we're getting
- 2:13:07Speaker 4: of it?
- 2:13:10Speaker 7: I really do love it. I really do love it.
- 2:13:13Speaker 15: I think more so than anything, I think that people
- 2:13:17Speaker 15: should think about is think about just how smart these
- 2:13:21Speaker 15: guys are, that we can have so many different formations,
- 2:13:25Speaker 15: so many different moving parts, right? And it all is
- 2:13:28Speaker 15: gelling so well, like a well-oiled machine, right? Like the
- 2:13:32Speaker 15: players need so much more credit on, you know, being
- 2:13:37Speaker 15: able to digest all of this stuff and then go
- 2:13:40Speaker 15: out and execute it flawlessly, right? It's so many little
- 2:13:43Speaker 15: things that can happen to where, you know, the formations
- 2:13:46Speaker 15: can be, you know, gimmicky, cute sometimes, whatever it may be,
- 2:13:52Speaker 15: and something can go wrong, but these guys have been
- 2:13:54Speaker 15: able to make all of the stuff that is really,
- 2:13:57Speaker 15: really hard to do, especially when you talk about reading
- 2:14:02Speaker 15: the adoption stuff. That's really hard to do. Not a
- 2:14:07Speaker 15: lot of quarterbacks can do that. I wanted to give
- 2:14:11Speaker 15: a lot of credit to the players. Coach McGivins obviously
- 2:14:15Speaker 15: has had an outstanding plan each and every week the
- 2:14:18Speaker 15: first two weeks right i think going back to last
- 2:14:21Speaker 15: week right uh bill said it on the show it
- 2:14:25Speaker 15: was like you know we showed a lot without doing
- 2:14:28Speaker 15: a lot right and that made um arkansas had to
- 2:14:32Speaker 15: plan for so many different formations and then we came
- 2:14:34Speaker 15: out and showed even different some more different formations and
- 2:14:39Speaker 15: you can just tell the type of how confused they
- 2:14:42Speaker 15: were just by having to see that. And, you know,
- 2:14:44Speaker 15: sometimes we lined up with absolutely no one in the backfield, right?
- 2:14:48Speaker 15: And most people can ask yourself, oh, why do you
- 2:14:51Speaker 15: line up like that? And then you just motion right
- 2:14:53Speaker 15: back into it. But communication at that last second, you
- 2:14:59Speaker 15: get the snap off, which confuses the defense. It was
- 2:15:03Speaker 15: really a nice piece of art on Saturday night.
- 2:15:09Speaker 4: To the tune of a 43, 10 victory over the
- 2:15:11Speaker 4: Arkansas Razorbacks. So the youths are two and oh, they're
- 2:15:14Speaker 4: up to number 17 in the rankings. I still think
- 2:15:17Speaker 4: we have to figure out a lot of things about
- 2:15:19Speaker 4: this team.
- 2:15:19Speaker 3: I echo your sentiment. I liked it.
- 2:15:21Speaker 4: The offensive line, the defensive line played well in this game.
- 2:15:25Speaker 3: Now you've got Utah state.
- 2:15:27Speaker 4: So you've got, you know, FCS team, Then an SEC team,
- 2:15:30Speaker 4: although a bottom-dwelling SEC team. Then you've got a Utah
- 2:15:33Speaker 4: State team that knows a couple of your guys really well,
- 2:15:37Speaker 4: that knows Kevin McGibbon really well.
- 2:15:39Speaker 3: Bronco Mendenhall was his boss last year.
- 2:15:42Speaker 4: And a lot of these Utah State guys are guys
- 2:15:44Speaker 4: that either wish they played at Utah or wish they
- 2:15:47Speaker 4: played at BYU. Coaches all over the staff that know
- 2:15:51Speaker 4: each other incredibly well. How much do you think the
- 2:15:53Speaker 4: dynamic changes because of the familiarity that Utah State has
- 2:15:57Speaker 4: with Utah?
- 2:15:59Speaker 15: Yeah, that's definitely a challenge. You know, and obviously we
- 2:16:02Speaker 15: won't know just how much of a challenge it is
- 2:16:05Speaker 15: until you roll the ball out there and you play.
- 2:16:08Speaker 15: But it's definitely something you can't overlook, I think, which
- 2:16:12Speaker 15: we have obviously a lot more talent on our side
- 2:16:14Speaker 15: of the ball. And these guys are hungry, right? I think,
- 2:16:17Speaker 15: you know. It's great to be friends, right, from the
- 2:16:20Speaker 15: coaching staff and the players' side of things before kickoff.
- 2:16:24Speaker 15: But once that ball kicks off, right, all that goes
- 2:16:27Speaker 15: out of the window. And then you can pick that
- 2:16:29Speaker 15: back up after you come out of there with another
- 2:16:32Speaker 15: blowout win, hopefully. But, you know, I think our players, right,
- 2:16:37Speaker 15: are up for the challenge. You know, I love, you know,
- 2:16:42Speaker 15: just seeing how locked in each and every player, every
- 2:16:45Speaker 15: coach was. getting ready for the Arkansas game. I highly
- 2:16:49Speaker 15: doubt it will be any different Saturday at 1.30.
- 2:16:55Speaker 4: So Brayden Pagan obviously was their leading receiver last year,
- 2:16:58Speaker 4: and then like three games into the new season, he's
- 2:17:02Speaker 4: now playing against a bunch of his former teammates. And
- 2:17:04Speaker 4: this is becoming more normal in college football, but really
- 2:17:10Speaker 4: the first time we see it or the normal times
- 2:17:12Speaker 4: we see it is, in the NFL where a guy,
- 2:17:14Speaker 4: you know, plays for a franchise and then he plays
- 2:17:16Speaker 4: against that franchise later on.
- 2:17:19Speaker 3: How many, how many times did you have to do
- 2:17:20Speaker 3: that in the league?
- 2:17:23Speaker 15: Um, actually, you know, I, when I left Buffalo, I
- 2:17:28Speaker 15: never got a chance to play them again. Um, and
- 2:17:32Speaker 15: then my, after I left, uh, Indianapolis, I went to Cincinnati. Um,
- 2:17:37Speaker 15: we actually had a, uh, preseason game and a joint practice, uh,
- 2:17:41Speaker 15: against them right that following season. So that was pretty
- 2:17:44Speaker 15: cool to see all the all the guys that you
- 2:17:47Speaker 15: just went to war with um in that past season
- 2:17:50Speaker 15: and stuff like that so like i said it'd be
- 2:17:53Speaker 15: a great thing for these guys right because that's what
- 2:17:55Speaker 15: football is about it's about families about making those connections
- 2:17:58Speaker 15: and things of that nature um but also right you're
- 2:18:02Speaker 15: talking about being super competitors right at the same time
- 2:18:05Speaker 15: so you know, all the talk of, man, I would
- 2:18:08Speaker 15: have been able to lock you up. I would have
- 2:18:10Speaker 15: made that tackle on you right now. You get an
- 2:18:13Speaker 15: actual opportunity to do that. So that even raises it
- 2:18:17Speaker 15: even more. I think sometimes at least for myself, when
- 2:18:21Speaker 15: you talk about knowing the person that's lined up against
- 2:18:24Speaker 15: across from you versus not knowing that person.
- 2:18:28Speaker 4: Big picture in the big 12 conference, Utah looked really good.
- 2:18:32Speaker 4: These last two games, BYU had a tough one against Arizona,
- 2:18:36Speaker 4: came out as winners. You got Texas Tech, who's there
- 2:18:41Speaker 4: also 2-0, but they haven't looked all that impressive. Kansas
- 2:18:45Speaker 4: State looks pretty good. Oklahoma State, I have no idea.
- 2:18:47Speaker 4: They lost to Tulsa, but then they beat Oregon. Is
- 2:18:51Speaker 4: Utah now at the top of the heap alongside BYU
- 2:18:55Speaker 4: in the Big 12, as far as we could tell?
- 2:19:00Speaker 15: I think from the style of wins that they've had
- 2:19:02Speaker 15: so far, right, obviously going out and handling Idaho in
- 2:19:06Speaker 15: the season opener, you know, not playing around with that
- 2:19:08Speaker 15: game and then obviously going up in a challenge versus
- 2:19:13Speaker 15: Arkansas and, you know, single-handedly dominating that game from the
- 2:19:20Speaker 15: rest of that second quarter down. I think you have to,
- 2:19:23Speaker 15: but I think, you know, at the same time, I
- 2:19:25Speaker 15: think it's like you said, it's still a lot of,
- 2:19:27Speaker 15: questions that we need to be answered about this team.
- 2:19:30Speaker 15: And we'll get another chance at it on Saturday here. But,
- 2:19:33Speaker 15: you know, I don't think you really learn a lot
- 2:19:35Speaker 15: about a team and the identity and the culture of
- 2:19:38Speaker 15: things of that nature that really shape a team and
- 2:19:40Speaker 15: who they are until about week four. This team hasn't
- 2:19:44Speaker 15: had any real adversity. So we need to see that
- 2:19:47Speaker 15: first and see how they bounce back. And, you know,
- 2:19:50Speaker 15: that's the great thing about football. We got a few,
- 2:19:52Speaker 15: we got a lot of weeks here to continue to
- 2:19:54Speaker 15: learn about this team.
- 2:19:56Speaker 4: Zach, we'll see you up there again on Saturday. Appreciate
- 2:19:59Speaker 4: you giving us time today.
- 2:20:00Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 2:20:02Speaker 8: Absolutely.
- 2:20:02Speaker 5: Appreciate you guys.
- 2:20:03Speaker 3: Take care.
- 2:20:03Speaker 4: Zach Moss, sideline reporter now for the official Utah radio broadcast.
- 2:20:09Speaker 3: Of course, Bill Riley on the calls.
- 2:20:11Speaker 4: Stevenson Sylvester is the new color analyst this season.
- 2:20:18Speaker 3: Porter Larson is filling in for Spence today. That's right.
- 2:20:24Speaker 9: I love to hear it. It's producer day. On the
- 2:20:27Speaker 9: drive with Spence Jenkins.
- 2:20:28Speaker 3: That's great. Where's Spence? What's Spence doing? He's supposed to
- 2:20:33Speaker 3: tell me when he's on or off, even though I'm
- 2:20:35Speaker 3: not his boss at all.
- 2:20:36Speaker 6: I know.
- 2:20:37Speaker 3: He's supposed to send that text, and you're supposed to
- 2:20:39Speaker 3: say congratulations. Yes. Snarkily. We never got that text. All right. Okay, Spence.
- 2:20:47Speaker 3: We see you.
- 2:20:48Speaker 4: Either way, we're going to give away some tickets next.
- 2:20:52Speaker 4: Five-finger death punch. It'll be a trivia question or two. Well,
- 2:20:57Speaker 4: just one, because we only have one pair of tickets
- 2:20:58Speaker 4: to give away. Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 2:21:05Speaker 10: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:21:09Speaker 10: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:21:12Speaker 3: 877-353-0700, Utah football, 2-0 now.
- 2:21:27Speaker 4: We've got a couple of tickets we're willing to give
- 2:21:30Speaker 4: away if you can answer this question properly. Five Finger
- 2:21:35Speaker 4: Death Punch is coming to the Utah First Credit Union Amphitheater.
- 2:21:37Speaker 3: Two tickets.
- 2:21:38Speaker 4: If you could tell me who currently leads the Utes
- 2:21:42Speaker 4: in touchdowns scored.
- 2:21:43Speaker 11: 877-353-0700.
- 2:21:46Speaker 4: If you know the answer to that question, we will
- 2:21:52Speaker 4: give you a pair of tickets to Five Finger Death Punch.
- 2:21:56Speaker 3: Porter Larson filling in for Spence today.
- 2:21:58Speaker 8: What up?
- 2:21:59Speaker 3: It'll be Jordan Bianucci behind the glass. Is that what
- 2:22:01Speaker 3: I'm told? Our guy JB. I love that.
- 2:22:04Speaker 4: A little extra flavor from our sister station coming over
- 2:22:07Speaker 4: to ESPN 700.
- 2:22:10Speaker 3: Saw you up there on Saturday night.
- 2:22:11Speaker 4: The celebratory atmosphere as Eric Weddle was inducted into the
- 2:22:15Speaker 4: Ring of Honor. Rightfully so. And Utah absolutely molly whopped
- 2:22:20Speaker 4: the Razorbacks. Not a lot left to be desired from
- 2:22:24Speaker 4: a performance like that one.
- 2:22:25Speaker 16: No, I mean, when you can, and listen, we understand
- 2:22:28Speaker 16: Arkansas is not Alabama. They are frankly, not even the
- 2:22:33Speaker 16: top tier of the big 12 at the moment.
- 2:22:35Speaker 3: They're in a bad spot.
- 2:22:37Speaker 16: Silverfield's working with 70 plus new players on that roster.
- 2:22:42Speaker 16: His first year as a head coach.
- 2:22:44Speaker 13: Yes.
- 2:22:44Speaker 16: Morgan Scali is in his first year as a head coach,
- 2:22:46Speaker 16: completely different situation. So that all being said, When you
- 2:22:50Speaker 16: beat an SEC team 43-10, and it really wasn't that close,
- 2:22:54Speaker 16: to be honest with you. There was a moment during
- 2:22:56Speaker 16: the second half where it looked like a cat playing
- 2:22:58Speaker 16: with a ball of yarn. That's what that game looked
- 2:23:02Speaker 16: like at certain points over the course of the night.
- 2:23:06Speaker 3: And you.
- 2:23:08Speaker 16: Can't expect too much more than that from the University
- 2:23:12Speaker 16: of Utah perspective.
- 2:23:13Speaker 5: Now, as.
- 2:23:15Speaker 16: was the case last week. We can nitpick if we
- 2:23:17Speaker 16: want to. There are things that we can get into,
- 2:23:19Speaker 16: but just a really, really good showing. And I think
- 2:23:23Speaker 16: some of the question marks that I had coming into
- 2:23:25Speaker 16: the season, very much answered. And to do it in
- 2:23:29Speaker 16: front of Eric on a night like that is pretty cool.
- 2:23:31Speaker 4: It's funny because the question marks, I always pat myself
- 2:23:35Speaker 4: on the back when I'm right.
- 2:23:36Speaker 3: And so I take every....
- 2:23:39Speaker 4: The offensive line, which I was like, yeah, I think
- 2:23:41Speaker 4: they're going to be okay, but I don't think we
- 2:23:44Speaker 4: get a super solid answer on what the final product
- 2:23:46Speaker 4: looks like until week three, four, five. And Morgan Scali
- 2:23:52Speaker 4: sort of confirmed that in his presser today, that it's
- 2:23:55Speaker 4: going to take a little bit more time before we
- 2:23:57Speaker 4: know what the full rotation looks like.
- 2:23:59Speaker 3: And by the way, it is a rotation.
- 2:24:01Speaker 4: I've always been uncomfortable with that when it comes to
- 2:24:04Speaker 4: starting offensive linemen, but like Solito Moya and Kelvin Obot.
- 2:24:09Speaker 3: It's like a 60, 40 split at left guard right now.
- 2:24:12Speaker 3: It's been interesting to watch. I'm with you.
- 2:24:15Speaker 16: I think that, and I think you will see them
- 2:24:18Speaker 16: kind of lean into a, a starting five at some point,
- 2:24:21Speaker 16: but Keith Olson still getting healthy, healthy, right? There's, uh,
- 2:24:26Speaker 16: there's an ability for Utah to go with eight, nine,
- 2:24:30Speaker 16: 10 guys sometimes. And that is a problem.
- 2:24:33Speaker 3: That's good to have.
- 2:24:34Speaker 7: Right.
- 2:24:34Speaker 3: Um, yes, you'd like to, to.
- 2:24:37Speaker 16: Have your five known and straightforward, but I mean, if
- 2:24:43Speaker 16: you're rotating in and the production is still there, perfect.
- 2:24:47Speaker 16: Cause then you have depth when you need it, right?
- 2:24:49Speaker 16: Not when you are still figuring things out, but later
- 2:24:51Speaker 16: in the year where you're going to need at some point, uh,
- 2:24:55Speaker 16: some guys to, to get some breathers or out with
- 2:24:58Speaker 16: injury that that's going to happen at some point during
- 2:25:00Speaker 16: the big 12 slate. And to, to see that you
- 2:25:02Speaker 16: already have that depth, um, Maybe not producing at the
- 2:25:06Speaker 16: level we saw last year, but producing at a level
- 2:25:10Speaker 16: that is allowing Utah's offense to be productive and efficient.
- 2:25:13Speaker 3: Well, I was encouraged.
- 2:25:14Speaker 4: We talked about there's a few bright spots on Arkansas's team,
- 2:25:18Speaker 4: and they're few and far between.
- 2:25:22Speaker 3: And they did nothing in this game. Quincy Rhodes Jr.
- 2:25:25Speaker 4: May or may not be a first-round draft, but he's
- 2:25:28Speaker 4: going to be an NFL football player.
- 2:25:29Speaker 3: He's going to be a good NFL football player. And
- 2:25:32Speaker 3: he was... Absent.
- 2:25:33Speaker 4: He had one tackle in this game. It was a
- 2:25:36Speaker 4: tackle for loss, but he had one tackle in this game.
- 2:25:40Speaker 4: On the opposite side, Stephen Soles Jr., who's somebody that
- 2:25:46Speaker 4: Morgan Scali was telling everybody, watch out for 35. 35's
- 2:25:49Speaker 4: a real player. He also had one tackle in this game.
- 2:25:53Speaker 4: That is your tackles, your offensive linemen winning those battles.
- 2:25:57Speaker 4: And that's encouraging to see because those are presumably as
- 2:26:02Speaker 4: good as you're going to see this year.
- 2:26:04Speaker 16: The one-on-one matchups that you just mentioned were really promising.
- 2:26:09Speaker 16: Even more so for me was the fact that Utah,
- 2:26:12Speaker 16: for the first time, this offensive line was going up
- 2:26:14Speaker 16: against a front, a defensive scheme that poses some challenges pre-snap.
- 2:26:21Speaker 16: They run this 3-3-5, sometimes it's a 4-2-5 line, but
- 2:26:26Speaker 16: what they do before the snap is they try to
- 2:26:29Speaker 16: confuse you on which one that's going to be, whether
- 2:26:31Speaker 16: it's an odd man front, whether it's those three man front,
- 2:26:34Speaker 16: and you don't really know until the ball is snapped
- 2:26:37Speaker 16: because they've got a linebacker creeping up where they got
- 2:26:40Speaker 16: one of the ends dropping back.
- 2:26:42Speaker 3: It's, it's.
- 2:26:45Speaker 16: Notoriously a tough defense for the offensive line, the quarterback
- 2:26:48Speaker 16: to ID pre-snap. There were no such struggles for Utah
- 2:26:53Speaker 16: on Saturday night. They handled that really well. And, And that,
- 2:26:56Speaker 16: to me, was as promising as seeing your left tackle
- 2:27:01Speaker 16: handle a future NFL guy. That's something you've got to
- 2:27:06Speaker 16: love if you're a Utah fan. The offensive line was
- 2:27:09Speaker 16: up to snuff, for sure.
- 2:27:11Speaker 4: Really great to see this Utah team come through the
- 2:27:14Speaker 4: way they did against solid athletes, if nothing else. The
- 2:27:20Speaker 4: Big 12 at large is drunk and can't figure out
- 2:27:24Speaker 4: what it is.
- 2:27:25Speaker 16: Cause I'm going to do a power pole in the
- 2:27:27Speaker 16: show coming up. And I was just going through it,
- 2:27:30Speaker 16: trying to figure out like what that will look like.
- 2:27:32Speaker 16: And the only real solid poll that I could come
- 2:27:38Speaker 16: up with was the top six. And the top three
- 2:27:40Speaker 16: are a different tier, I think, right now. And then
- 2:27:43Speaker 16: from there on, man, like Baylor, Arizona, Oklahoma State, Colorado, TCU,
- 2:27:49Speaker 16: I don't know what they are yet.
- 2:27:51Speaker 3: It's week two, week three. I get it.
- 2:27:54Speaker 4: Even though people were high on, we don't know exactly
- 2:27:56Speaker 4: what they are right now, but Oklahoma State is the
- 2:28:00Speaker 4: most confusing 69 to three last year to Oregon.
- 2:28:06Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 2:28:07Speaker 3: And then they beat Oregon and I.
- 2:28:11Speaker 4: Stay like George Reister, friend of the program. Uh, Jeff Schwartz,
- 2:28:17Speaker 4: obviously real friend in real life. Like I follow those
- 2:28:20Speaker 4: guys closely. They live tweet every game all the time.
- 2:28:23Speaker 4: They're both Oregon alum. Those guys were losing their minds
- 2:28:26Speaker 4: from the first quarter.
- 2:28:27Speaker 16: I would be too. I, since Dan Lanning has been
- 2:28:30Speaker 16: the head coach at Oregon, they have had one of
- 2:28:32Speaker 16: the most physical teams in college football week in and
- 2:28:35Speaker 16: week out, like whether they win, whether they lose, you
- 2:28:38Speaker 16: watch them and you, you can see that they are
- 2:28:41Speaker 16: imposing their will on the team across from them. That's
- 2:28:45Speaker 16: not the case anymore. At least not early this season.
- 2:28:48Speaker 16: And that's been, that's been really interesting to watch. I'm
- 2:28:51Speaker 16: not sure what's going on there.
- 2:28:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:28:54Speaker 4: So we'll watch it all develop. BYU looks good. Utah
- 2:28:58Speaker 4: looks good. Hopefully everything stays that way until we get
- 2:29:04Speaker 4: to rice cycle stated by November 7th.
- 2:29:07Speaker 16: Wouldn't that be nice. Now they don't necessarily have to
- 2:29:10Speaker 16: be running the table until then.
- 2:29:12Speaker 10: Right.
- 2:29:12Speaker 16: But if you get a couple of teams, one loss
- 2:29:14Speaker 16: or less, uh, that's, that's going to make for some,
- 2:29:18Speaker 16: some really fun football and, and probably some national attention on, uh,
- 2:29:23Speaker 16: on that matchup coming in.
- 2:29:25Speaker 3: As, as there should be. Yes.
- 2:29:27Speaker 16: Um, Regardless, those are two teams that are going to
- 2:29:30Speaker 16: be contending for a Big 12 championship. And in today's age,
- 2:29:34Speaker 16: that means two teams contending for a college football playoff spot.
- 2:29:37Speaker 16: So there should be attention on that game. I think
- 2:29:41Speaker 16: they are the top two teams in the Big 12
- 2:29:42Speaker 16: right now.
- 2:29:43Speaker 3: It looks like it.
- 2:29:44Speaker 16: Texas Tech, and I said this before the year, I'll
- 2:29:47Speaker 16: pat myself on the back like you were saying, it's
- 2:29:50Speaker 16: not them and everyone else. Like a lot of folks
- 2:29:52Speaker 16: thought were coming in. That's not the same team they
- 2:29:54Speaker 16: had last year.
- 2:29:55Speaker 3: They lost a lot.
- 2:29:56Speaker 16: Um, a lot of distractions in the off season and
- 2:30:00Speaker 16: I don't think they replaced some of the stuff they, they're,
- 2:30:03Speaker 16: they're missing. So I think BYU and Utah as of today,
- 2:30:06Speaker 16: it's early, it's still early. Those are my favorites in
- 2:30:08Speaker 16: the big 12. And that's going to be a topic
- 2:30:10Speaker 16: of conversation on the show today.
- 2:30:11Speaker 4: I was right and wrong about Texas tech because I
- 2:30:14Speaker 4: thought that they were going to take a step back,
- 2:30:16Speaker 4: but I didn't think it would be because of the
- 2:30:17Speaker 4: quarterback position. I thought that will, I was like, will
- 2:30:20Speaker 4: Hammond is an awesome quarterback. He has not played awesome
- 2:30:24Speaker 4: as of yet. I think the injury was a little
- 2:30:26Speaker 4: bit more taxing to him than we gave credit, or
- 2:30:28Speaker 4: at least that I gave credit. My expectations for Texas
- 2:30:33Speaker 4: Tech were that they would not be what they were
- 2:30:35Speaker 4: last year defensively, and they're not. But I was like,
- 2:30:37Speaker 4: they'll be fine at the quarterback position because Will Hammond
- 2:30:40Speaker 4: is as good as it gets. Maybe that won't be
- 2:30:44Speaker 4: true as the year plays out.
- 2:30:45Speaker 16: But at the same time, a quarterback's best friend is
- 2:30:47Speaker 16: a good defense. I do think Will Hammond's good, but
- 2:30:51Speaker 16: coming off an injury and Not having the advantage that
- 2:30:55Speaker 16: you had last year of Texas Tech, causing turnovers and
- 2:30:59Speaker 16: giving you short fields, that's going to make your job tougher.
- 2:31:02Speaker 3: And I think it obviously has. Your guy, E-Dub, in
- 2:31:07Speaker 3: the Ring of Honor.
- 2:31:08Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:31:08Speaker 3: Drone show. The drone show was so cool. I heard
- 2:31:11Speaker 3: that yours is in the planning stages. I need one now.
- 2:31:14Speaker 3: I need one.
- 2:31:15Speaker 4: Even if it's just like ESPN 700 and then my face.
- 2:31:18Speaker 4: 11 to 2.
- 2:31:21Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:31:21Speaker 3: I'll have it at two. That's it. That's all I need.
- 2:31:23Speaker 3: A little advertisement up there.
- 2:31:24Speaker 4: How many, how many drones would I have to buy
- 2:31:26Speaker 4: in order to just like force that upon rice cycle stadium?
- 2:31:30Speaker 16: I'm a little uneasy with all the drones. Part of
- 2:31:33Speaker 16: me is just scared of robots and such. So that's,
- 2:31:35Speaker 16: it's the drone show was cool. It was, it was
- 2:31:39Speaker 16: well done. It was actually a lot like more well
- 2:31:42Speaker 16: done than a lot of ones that I've seen. It
- 2:31:44Speaker 16: was like actually 3d and moving.
- 2:31:45Speaker 3: It's really cool. Um, can we get a highlight package though?
- 2:31:50Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 2:31:50Speaker 3: Well, That's the one thing.
- 2:31:53Speaker 16: That's a guy who's made more plays, more interesting plays,
- 2:31:55Speaker 16: more dynamic plays than anyone in your school's history, maybe.
- 2:31:59Speaker 16: Just throw a few up there, please. Other than that, though,
- 2:32:03Speaker 16: really cool night. Cool to see E-Dub and friend of
- 2:32:06Speaker 16: the show. Yeah, a good win.
- 2:32:10Speaker 3: Good win for Utes. Porter will be talking about it.
- 2:32:14Speaker 4: I imagine he'll allow Jordan Bianucci to talk about it
- 2:32:18Speaker 4: a little bit.
- 2:32:18Speaker 3: Of course. Stay tuned.
- 2:32:21Speaker 4: It's the drive with Porter filling in for Spence next.
- 2:32:25Speaker 4: We'll do the Sean O'Connell show again tomorrow, ESPN 700,
- 2:32:27Speaker 4: 92 on FM.
