With the water gone and her own mind unraveling in the heat, Dana refuses to leave the frail neighbor she stayed behind to protect. She pours fresh water by the chair each day and finds the glass still full. She waves the flies away and blames the open window. She holds a conversation by speaking both halves, and finds it the kindest company she's ever known. But one afternoon the curtain slips, and for the length of a single breath the honest light shows Dana exactly what a stranger would see — and she makes a choice. Then, far out over the dead black city, the sky begins to flicker.
