Transcript
- 0:15All right, Good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:18Wednesday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:20Trent Condon and Ken Miller for the next two hours to talk
- 0:25sports with you. Thank you for starting your
- 0:27afternoon with us. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:30program in the next couple of hours.
- 0:32At the bottom of the hour, David Icolt will join us.
- 0:35We'll catch up on the Hawks with David Icolt hawkeyeinsider.com
- 0:40Boy, Iowa. And while the Big 10 overall,
- 0:43they got a cash windfall as they distributed the the revenue to
- 0:48each of the schools that is eligible of which I of course is
- 0:511 N of 62 million dollars this year.
- 0:56And that number is only going to grow and grow significantly as
- 0:59soon as next year. So I called on Big 10 stuff
- 1:03coming up here at the bottom of the hour.
- 1:05It's Wednesday. That means we will head to
- 1:07Chicago to start the second hour of the show with our friend
- 1:11David Kaplan. Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsors
- 1:15CAPPY on a weekly basis. Centurion Stone of iowa.com.
- 1:19CAPPY will talk Chicago sports with us coming up here at 1:00,
- 1:24and it's been a while since we checked in on one of our
- 1:27regional baseball teams. So we'll do that today with our
- 1:30friend Brian Walton, who covers the Saint Louis Cardinals, who
- 1:33are just a game below 500 but only four games back in the
- 1:36Central Division Cardinals. Brian Walton,
- 1:39thecardinalnation.com. Thecardinalnation.com Brian
- 1:43Walton bring up Walt Jockity we don't think we touched on last
- 1:46week as he passed away. Of course, spent a lot of time
- 1:49here back in the 70s and 80s down at what at the time must
- 1:53have been called a SEC Taylor Stadium with the not with the
- 1:56Cubs, with the I think it was the A's who were the franchise
- 2:00here back in the day. So we'll talk to Brian Walt
- 2:02about a number of things, but we'll bring out the passing of
- 2:05Walt Jockity and what he meant to those Cardinals as well.
- 2:08Had some NBA last night. Second straight night.
- 2:11The NBA has added a lot of intrigue to the sports viewing
- 2:14calendar, and in particular that first game an Oh boy, the most
- 2:18overrated player in the NBA had himself a sequence at the end of
- 2:23that game, did he not? So this is going to be the
- 2:25playoffs that will change that narrative.
- 2:26I hope so, yeah. Yeah, it was voted on by his
- 2:29peers. This was something somebody's
- 2:31got to be most overrated, right? I guess, I mean, he was on the
- 2:34Olympic team and this is pretty. And maybe that's what it was.
- 2:37Exclusive club. Well, yeah, he didn't play a lot
- 2:39at the. End and maybe people felt that
- 2:40he wasn't deserving of that or at that point in his career was,
- 2:43but sure. But that's going to regardless.
- 2:45I don't think it's a Tyrese Halliburton thing.
- 2:47If you're going to put us something like this, somebody
- 2:49has to be awarded, rewarded, awarded, named, named.
- 2:53There you go. Yep, little.
- 2:56Do you see it as a knock on him? I just.
- 2:58Not really. I just think he's better than
- 3:00that. I mean, if if he's the most
- 3:01overrated, there must be a league full of unbelievable.
- 3:04Superstars. But there was also a reason for
- 3:06it. He.
- 3:06Plays a lot. And that reason is changing.
- 3:10He wilted in big moments and players know that.
- 3:13Players know the guys that when they need a big shot, he's off
- 3:17in the corner. Doesn't want the ball.
- 3:19When you got a hoist and it's going to be a tough shot he
- 3:23passes to. Defer.
- 3:25People know that, players know that and that's changing in
- 3:28front of our eyes. It has changed here these last
- 3:30two weeks. So it can be both things, right?
- 3:33It can be fair at the time. I'm not sure was I think this is
- 3:37a guy likes to distribute. I'm sure he passed up some big
- 3:40shots and and in hindsight, you would have liked him to see him
- 3:43take that opportunity. But you're right.
- 3:45I mean, he's he's now taking those shots instead of trying to
- 3:48find a teammate. Boy, I thought he was going to
- 3:50fall when he grabbed the rebound.
- 3:52He was kind of off balance and I thought, Oh my God, but he found
- 3:55his way out a little, a little jump back and boom with one
- 4:00point, something, one second left or whatever was in the in
- 4:03the basketball game. And now to go up to nothing and
- 4:07go back to Indianapolis for games three and four.
- 4:11And you know what's what's lost in this?
- 4:13I think, well, it is because they're in an O2 hole.
- 4:16How about Mitchell's game on? Yes, my God, not being able, if
- 4:20you know, if he's going to be able to answer the bell to
- 4:22pouring in 48 and limping up and down the court the way he was at
- 4:27the end of that game yesterday. What a player.
- 4:29What a game. And not just the 48, but also 9
- 4:31assists. Yeah, there's more to it.
- 4:33You're right. 4 steals, 5 rebounds.
- 4:35Yep, that is filling up the box. Yeah, and it felt like for 47
- 4:401/2 minutes, Cleveland was going to get it.
- 4:43Yeah, I was convinced. I mean, I was shocked at the
- 4:46ending. I was glad.
- 4:47But that's what makes the NBA incredibly compelling.
- 4:50Now there's also. Lately.
- 4:52The part of it where do you really need to watch the 1st
- 4:553/4? That's a good point.
- 4:57Yeah. I found myself going back and
- 4:59forth for that very reason, Trent, because do you really
- 5:01need to watch the 1st 3/4 there? Yeah, they're back and forth and
- 5:06maybe one team grabs a 1520 point lead, but it doesn't feel
- 5:09like it matters. The same thing last night as a
- 5:11watch from start to finish. The Minnesota game, they're down
- 5:1420. They're like they got a rot in
- 5:16them. And they cut it to.
- 5:18A10 I think they got single ditches a couple times.
- 5:20Yeah. Was it single?
- 5:21Yep, got it inside of that a couple of different times so.
- 5:24Under 6 minutes left in the game I think.
- 5:26Got it to 9 twice, but then it was quickly 13 right after that.
- 5:30They had a response every single time.
- 5:32Obviously when Steph Curry leaves the game and he can't get
- 5:35a win, that's incredibly frustrating.
- 5:38You know, that's about as poor as Minnesota is going to play.
- 5:40Certainly offensively, though. They had no answer.
- 5:43Everybody healed, looked like he was back in school.
- 5:46He was unbelievable. Obviously Jimmy Butler's, Jimmy
- 5:49Butler and Draymond Green, not only defensively but chipping in
- 5:53offensively the way that he was last night.
- 5:56This was an impressive Golden State win, a very impressive
- 5:59Golden State win. As Trump mentioned, I mean,
- 6:01Steph Curry was able to only like 13 minutes in that game
- 6:03last night. And now you got to wonder about
- 6:06his status going forward. How long is he going to miss?
- 6:10How many games is he going to miss?
- 6:11Is he going to be able to find a way back at any point during
- 6:16this series? Those questions are all on the
- 6:19table because apparently, obviously there's different
- 6:21grades of this of this of this injury, but we'll see where it
- 6:26goes. Hats off to the Warriors, A they
- 6:30were a dog going in with Steph Curry to lose their biggest
- 6:34offensive weapon in the fashion that they did when they did in
- 6:3813 minutes. He had 13 points.
- 6:40Probably should put that on there in the part of the
- 6:42conversation as well. But Oh my God, what a night.
- 6:44NBA has been great the last two nights.
- 6:46It has been really has and if you would have parlayed all
- 6:49those together, we said it was 70 to 1 yesterday, if you would
- 6:51have also thrown the Warriors in there north of north of 100 to
- 6:541. Because every Rd. team won game
- 6:57one. And all of them were significant
- 6:59underdogs in that opening game. Yeah, for sure.
- 7:02Nuggets were. Yeah, that's a good point.
- 7:03All right, take a couple of calls.
- 7:05Get to John Cannon momentarily. Jesse is coming up.
- 7:08Want to talk about that major trade in the NFL and what does
- 7:11that do to Are they still America's team?
- 7:14Yes. Are they?
- 7:16Yes, forever, the generations between us.
- 7:23Yeah, OK, They'll still be known as America's.
- 7:26Team. Well, it's self-proclaimed.
- 7:27I mean, they never really were. But everybody calls them that.
- 7:30Yeah. You think somebody's going to
- 7:32take it away? Is it like a championship belt
- 7:34in Can You Think Wrestling? Yeah.
- 7:36Can you take it away? Who would it be?
- 7:38I don't think there's another team.
- 7:40The only one that would be close and I think that they're at the
- 7:44end. I've said this before, the
- 7:47Chiefs, I'm not America's team. They're not.
- 7:51But they've got. They're despised, though they
- 7:53have grown into what every dynasty grows into.
- 7:56True, they're hated. For the Swifties they're it's a
- 8:00different element that wasn't there before during the.
- 8:06It's a different kind of bandwagon, though.
- 8:07No, it is, yeah, sure. A different something that we've
- 8:09really never seen before. I mean, when Madonna was dating
- 8:13Dennis Rodman, everybody didn't suddenly become a Spurs fan.
- 8:16No, that was a Madonna fan, right?
- 8:17Were they? Were they dating?
- 8:18I didn't. Well, I don't know if you'd call
- 8:20it dating, hippity, dippity, whatever it was.
- 8:23Remember, he missed that playoff game and then Madonna was
- 8:25spotted. I.
- 8:26Thought that was with Carmen Electra.
- 8:28Well, it could have been that too.
- 8:29It probably. Was right.
- 8:31I think Madonna was involved at some.
- 8:32Was she? Yes, I think they got married.
- 8:35Carmen Electra and Rodman, they did get married.
- 8:37Did they? Yes.
- 8:38And he wore the dress, he wore the.
- 8:40Dress, yes, but the staying over was Madonna.
- 8:45That was during a playoff run, and maybe he was, but that was
- 8:47what this was. But nobody did.
- 8:48Swifties are completely different on that one, but
- 8:50they're not America's team because what is every you heard
- 8:52it all last year, complaints about they get every single
- 8:56call. You can't be America's team when
- 8:58everybody hates that. True, but America's team became
- 9:00America's team prior to social media.
- 9:03Yes, I did. And they've still held on to
- 9:06that moniker, Jesse and then John.
- 9:09Jesse, thanks for being patient. How are you?
- 9:11Hey, I'm pretty good. How are how are you guys?
- 9:13Doing doing fine. Hey I got 2 two things on
- 9:16Halliburton. I messed up beginning of it but
- 9:18I. Who?
- 9:18Who was the? Pole the Athletic, I think.
- 9:22No players. Players.
- 9:24Yep. So here's my take.
- 9:26I didn't hear if you guys had this take or not.
- 9:28I'm assuming you might have. I think it's his salary.
- 9:31I think they're saying he got the Max too early because if
- 9:36he's AI mean he's an All Star player.
- 9:38If you look, if you're a betting guy and you know the points,
- 9:40rebounds, this line that people bet on over unders.
- 9:42This is always up there with Luca, Joker, LeBron.
- 9:47I mean he does it all. So I think the overrated is 1 is
- 9:51salary and maybe 2 is shooting for him.
- 9:54Yeah, that's true. Not the prettiest.
- 9:56It's effective, but it's not the prettiest.
- 9:59There's plenty of that, Jesse. I think that's a tremendous
- 10:01point because if you. Play, see.
- 10:03Thanks for the call. Appreciate.
- 10:04It any sport at any level and he see that guy.
- 10:07You probably saw it with a guy with a ugly Philip Rivers.
- 10:10There's a perfect another example.
- 10:12Whatever the sport is, think of Jim.
- 10:14Fury I love Philip Rivers, by the way.
- 10:15Jim Furykin golf with that hideous.
- 10:17Swing that hitch. And it just, it drives you nuts.
- 10:19You're like, you can't hit a golf ball with that crappy
- 10:22swing. And yet he's one of the best
- 10:24people in the world. And I'm sure for the best
- 10:26players in the world, they cause Tyrese Halliburton shot is
- 10:29hideous, hideous. But that is Jesse.
- 10:32I think you nailed a big component of it.
- 10:34Remember, I never thought. All 90 players that were
- 10:37surveyed, it's not like every one of them.
- 10:39No, no, no, it wasn't unanimous. No, it was 14% of them he won.
- 10:43By an inch. Right.
- 10:44It was like 16 votes that actually voted him that.
- 10:47It's not like the whole league thinks that either.
- 10:49No, But Jesse, that's tremendous, the form.
- 10:52Never thought of. I think that's a part.
- 10:54Yeah, interesting. Here's John Cannon, noted Golden
- 10:59State Warrior fan. Of course, Spent a lot of time
- 11:01working in sports media in the Bay Area, and John's with us.
- 11:05That was quite a win last night. John Cannon I didn't.
- 11:07Well, I got I. Let me get a couple things
- 11:09before that. Number one, you can demote the
- 11:11Cowboys without having a replacement.
- 11:14America doesn't need a team. It's vacant.
- 11:16You know that. That was the seven.
- 11:17Just leave it vacant. Leave.
- 11:19Yes. You know, Phoenix, there wasn't
- 11:20a team in Phoenix. When I lived in Phoenix, there
- 11:22were still so many Cowboy fans because, you know, Phoenix
- 11:25didn't have a team when when when the Dallas Cowboys were
- 11:28really good. They're on TV every week out
- 11:30there. And so that's why, you know,
- 11:33they became America's team and it's not they just call
- 11:36themselves that and we all go along and talk radio is a big
- 11:39problem with that. You you turn on the radio
- 11:42anytime guilty of the year and talking about the Cowboys, even
- 11:46though they haven't won anything in forever so.
- 11:48Did they get better today, though?
- 11:49I'm going to ask that question to Trent once we talk basketball
- 11:52with you. So we'll see.
- 11:53Well, they traded draft picks for a player, right?
- 11:55So you'd think that they're better, right?
- 11:56Because a player is better than a draft pick right now.
- 11:59CD Lamb and Pickens. That's a pretty good 1-2 punch
- 12:02lining up at receiver. Anyways, I know you want to talk
- 12:04basketball. Let's get.
- 12:06I do couple things #1 Minnesota, somehow by the time they took
- 12:10the floor, I don't think that Indiana had won yet.
- 12:13So let's just say that when they took the floor, three teams home
- 12:18teams had lost their first game. You're right, they had not.
- 12:20It was like one minute left. Right.
- 12:23And, and. But they knew three teams had
- 12:25lost their first game, and yet they took the floor last night
- 12:29like the win was a birth rate for them.
- 12:31Yeah. That's true.
- 12:33They they. And, and one of the guys on the
- 12:36Athletic podcast was talking about that maybe the Lakers are
- 12:39the softest team ever because Minnesota handled them so well.
- 12:42And Minnesota looked really surprised that someone was
- 12:45playing hard against them last night, going for 5050 balls and
- 12:50and out rebounding them and couldn't stop Pat Spencer on his
- 12:53way to the basket. You know, I mean, it was a
- 12:56really weird outing for them. And and you know, Steve Kerr,
- 13:01who's a shooter who's asked about the problems that
- 13:05Timberwolves had shooting threes.
- 13:06And he said, well, maybe the 1st 6 or 7 looks, you know, we
- 13:09really defended them. But then when they when you miss
- 13:12a bunch of them, then even when you're open, you, you don't feel
- 13:16as good and, and they and they don't go in and he knows what
- 13:18that's like. So that was a.
- 13:21Big thing. And then?
- 13:23And now then, the opposite of that is Buddy Hield.
- 13:27The rim looks like the ocean and people forget.
- 13:29You know, he really statistically has been one of
- 13:32the best 3 point shooters in the NBA for years.
- 13:35And was in Oklahoma. And well, and in Oklahoma, but
- 13:38he he's played so long, it's like we judge these players when
- 13:42they've played in bad situations.
- 13:44You know, I don't even remember who he got drafted by, but he
- 13:46was traded to to Sacramento when they were bad.
- 13:50And then he was in New Orleans, right, right.
- 13:55And then he he was not in the rotation in Philly.
- 13:58And you just start to think, oh, that guy is, you know, he's
- 14:00just. A guy, but.
- 14:02That Oklahoma, that that feeling that he had, in fact, when they
- 14:06asked him after game seven, you know, what about it?
- 14:08Was this your best game ever? He said.
- 14:10Ask Dylan Brooks, because Oklahoma beat Oregon and Buddy
- 14:14had 35 and he said he said to Brooks on the court, he said I
- 14:18sent you home once and I'm going to do it again.
- 14:21Nice. So.
- 14:23But the Curry thing's a problem. How long?
- 14:25I'm sure that you've been trying to find out as much as you can.
- 14:28What have you heard? They won't know.
- 14:30He's never had this, you know, he tried to play on it.
- 14:32Did you guys see that video? Yes, absolutely.
- 14:34Yeah, he's feeling the twinge and he's still cutting.
- 14:39So I, you know, he certainly won't play tonight.
- 14:42I don't think he would. He would play in Game 3.
- 14:46And you know, remember, Trent dropped that little nugget on us
- 14:492 days ago about that extra day because of the Valkyries home
- 14:53opener. There's three, three days
- 14:55between 5:00 and 6:00. And that's the thing.
- 14:57If the Warriors can win one of the next three and force a Game
- 15:026, that would give him a lot of time to get back.
- 15:06So they got to win one of the two homies.
- 15:07They're not. They're not winning, you know?
- 15:09In games from time. Yeah, that.
- 15:13Seems like a reasonable thing, although it might not be.
- 15:16You know, hamstrings are are funny.
- 15:18This could actually be the kind of be the end of the line.
- 15:21The irony is Minnesota could have ended that series in the
- 15:24fourth quarter last night. They had opportunity.
- 15:26If they if they win that game last night, the series is over.
- 15:29The only chance that the Warriors had was to win that
- 15:31game, and Minnesota let that happen.
- 15:35John, got to let you go, brother.
- 15:36Thank you. Appreciate the call.
- 15:39John Cannon as we check in on Golden State, that that was it
- 15:42mean, gutsy effort, right? Down the stretch, they got it
- 15:46back to the single digits. They had opportunities and got
- 15:49it to 9, right back to 13. The biggest part though, it
- 15:52wasn't the threes and though there were a couple of daggers,
- 15:54Butler hit that one that I think push it back up to like 15.
- 15:58When they got it to dozen, it was that late, 3rd, early,
- 16:00whatever it was, he's off balance.
- 16:02He's faded. End of the shot clock.
- 16:04It just goes in like that. But then the offensive rebounds
- 16:09can't allow that to happen. There were a couple of times
- 16:11where Gobert, he had Butler on him.
- 16:13At one point, he just finally backed him.
- 16:14He's a hell. Of a player.
- 16:17But they didn't get to him enough and he didn't take
- 16:19advantage of of your advantages. I don't think it was a Finch
- 16:23thing and I listened to the post.
- 16:25I think it was a Draymond Green thing a lot of the way.
- 16:27I thought he was really good yesterday.
- 16:29It was also an Ant thing. Well, he's was first point of
- 16:32the game was with one man left in the first half, right and it
- 16:35was he made he missed his first free throw, made the 2nd and
- 16:38finally got in the call in the scoring column.
- 16:40And Finch mentioned this last night post game that he is still
- 16:45at the point where he has to realize what's going on over
- 16:48there. The Jets were just on TV.
- 16:50Sorry. When Anthony Edwards is not
- 16:56hitting shots, when he is struggling offensive, when
- 16:58somebody has locked him down, he has to impact the game other
- 17:01ways and that is we. Took over on the boards.
- 17:05The final part of it that he has to be able to do that.
- 17:08He has to do that part. My shots not falling, but I can
- 17:12still help the team in other ways.
- 17:14And he got going in the fourth quarter and he was getting to
- 17:16the rim and he was finishing and he was doing those kind of
- 17:19things. Hit a three.
- 17:20I think that one of them maybe cut it to 9.
- 17:22However, no, no, no hit the three.
- 17:24The only one he made. The three.
- 17:27But it shouldn't be the far part where you're down 20 before that
- 17:31starts to happen. You can't allow that part.
- 17:34Inexplicable. When one thing I've noticed,
- 17:38when Chris Finch calls Aunt out and it happens, he responds.
- 17:44That's another reason that I love him as a player.
- 17:47You can coach him. Yes.
- 17:49He's not a shrinking Violet. He's not a guy that that can't
- 17:52handle it. He is a guy that listens,
- 17:56understands, dives a little bit deeper, understanding what he
- 18:00says. And because we see this with so
- 18:02many superstars, and not just to the NBA in sport, the guys that
- 18:05can't handle that criticism, that is, I believe, one of the
- 18:08strengths and one of the reasons he is going to become a face of
- 18:11the league because he can take it from all walks.
- 18:13Yeah, that guy in the corner that's talking crap to him or
- 18:16that player in the corner talking crap to him, yeah, he'll
- 18:18have fun there. But he'll also listen and also
- 18:20internalize these kind of things.
- 18:22That's why this guy is going to be a superstar, and I anticipate
- 18:25he's going to bounce back in a big.
- 18:26Way yeah, I do too. I do too.
- 18:29I real quick on this as we brought up the Cowboys formerly
- 18:33known as I think they got better today and and and here's where I
- 18:37want to go with you because we both like the bet.
- 18:40We both like the bet futures. I'm guessing, Trent, that there
- 18:44was it's been a long time since we're in the middle of May.
- 18:47Well, not quite the middle of May, early May and the Cowboys
- 18:50are 70 to 1 to win a Super Bowl. They're the third choice to win
- 18:55the AFC East. They're 30 something to win to 1
- 18:59to win the to win the NFC Cowboys at 71.
- 19:03Could I enter at 72? One could I interest?
- 19:05You you couldn't because it's to win the Super Bowl.
- 19:08Could I interest you at 35 to 1 to win the North?
- 19:13To win the NFC, you mean? I mean, they're to win the NFC,
- 19:15yes, yeah. I I couldn't.
- 19:18It's crazy because every year, don't bet the Cowboys, don't bet
- 19:22the Cowboys, don't bet the Cowboys.
- 19:23No, it's normally Super Bowl things, but they're overvalued
- 19:27in the market seemingly every single year.
- 19:28Because they're the Cowboys. They're the tax, right?
- 19:31That goes along with it. Those public teams that the
- 19:33extra, the Yankees in the in baseball, there's that extra tax
- 19:36that you're going to have to pay, and that's certainly the
- 19:38Cowboys in the NFL. VGK in Nevada.
- 19:41Yes, there. There's another one that we see
- 19:44every single year. This is a team, though, that won
- 19:4812 games the last three years before last season when their
- 19:51quarterback got hurt. They still, even with that 17
- 19:54and 10, they still got Parsons. Now they got George Pickens.
- 19:59He's painted the S, Yeah. But he's.
- 20:02He's really good in the in the locker.
- 20:04Room guys like him. Yes, I've heard that.
- 20:06Here's one more that that might even be more appealing to you.
- 20:09How about plus 7:50 to windy east?
- 20:12Eagles 2 years ago. Commanders are two to one.
- 20:16You think that that they're sophomore slump you.
- 20:19That's what you're expecting. Of course, the Giants have no
- 20:21shot. The Giants have no shot for a
- 20:24team that has 12 and five that not just snuck into the player
- 20:2912 and five the last three years at 7:00 to 1, he said.
- 20:33To win that division, 7 1/2 to win that division.
- 20:37I can't believe I'm saying this, but yes, I would be willing to
- 20:40bet futures before the season. Yeah.
- 20:43On the Dallas Cowboys. And here's the crazy part about
- 20:45all the divisions in football. The team that's that's ranked
- 20:48third in their division, the highest price is the Cowboys.
- 20:52Yeah, that's nuts. Unthinkable, right?
- 20:55I'm with you, I don't understand it but something to watch.
- 20:59I think they got better. Eagles.
- 21:02Do they Super Bowl hangover commanders.
- 21:07I I like the commanders. I like the commanders more than
- 21:10Trent does. So we we'll see.
- 21:11But at 70 to one, at 35 to 1 to win the NFC and they can get
- 21:16them in the East at 7 1/2 to one.
- 21:18All right, let's get Mike in Waterloo.
- 21:19That will take a time out since Mike in Waterloo remind me of
- 21:22the Cyclones when he calls. I got through Scott Dockerman's
- 21:24piece yesterday. It is a phenomenal read trend.
- 21:27It really is good. If you haven't had a chance to
- 21:29read it, if you're a Cyclone fan and you don't want to read it
- 21:32because a Hawkeye writer in your mind wrote it and you're going
- 21:35to cut off your nose to spite your face.
- 21:37It is such a good look into Iowa State and where they were and
- 21:41where they're at now and what they were.
- 21:43You know, the me, Matt Campbell giving up more of a salary.
- 21:46If you need me to give up more, I'm willing to do do that.
- 21:49This on the heels of the news today that the Big 10 gets $62
- 21:53million per school. Now, before we get to mic real
- 21:56quick, the athletic department doesn't get all that money,
- 21:59correct? Or do they?
- 22:01Does 62,000,000 go in their coffers?
- 22:04All of it. They don't have to shell some
- 22:07out to the university in general.
- 22:10No. I didn't know that, that's why
- 22:11I'm asking. I don't believe so.
- 22:13I don't. They got to think they got to
- 22:16pay something to the university, don't they?
- 22:18For what? Because it's the university.
- 22:20Of sure, but it's not like there's a licensing fee.
- 22:24No, no, we might get there. Yeah.
- 22:27But I don't. Know, I don't know how it's
- 22:28distributed. I'd like to know that.
- 22:30I mean, I know it goes to the other athletic programs and
- 22:33obviously they they pay the bills for the breadwinner, but
- 22:38does like the political science or the dentistry department, do
- 22:43they get any of it? I don't.
- 22:44Know. No, I don't think so.
- 22:45Yeah, I don't know the answer. Mike's in Waterloo.
- 22:48Welcome to the program, Mike. How are you?
- 22:50Hey, how are you guys doing? Well, couple weeks ago I called
- 22:53about the White Sox turn in the corner.
- 22:55I take that back. Did you see that play last
- 22:58night? Yeah, that was the biggest
- 23:00debacle I've ever seen. The guy let the ball hit him on
- 23:03the top of the head. All he had to do was that was
- 23:06Little League play. You guys watched?
- 23:08I did. I did.
- 23:11Double play, I mean it would have been a little hard, but
- 23:13they would have got out and got a victory.
- 23:15They played a good game the whole game until the 9th inning,
- 23:18but I could not believe the guy hit.
- 23:21I've never seen that except. I've seen a Canseco.
- 23:23That would be the only one, Mike, like you say, you brought
- 23:25up Canseco, but that that's an outfielder.
- 23:27So you know, you ball completely they tricks on you when it's
- 23:30going that far. But for the second baseman, have
- 23:32a pop up hit him in the I guess it hit the bill of his cap and
- 23:35then went off the back. But still it was awful.
- 23:38I mean, as you said, that's a Little League play.
- 23:40Come on. And I tell you one thing.
- 23:43And then they give that Robert a day off.
- 23:46Come on guys, baseball. The center fielder playing every
- 23:50game. I mean come on, the people want
- 23:52to see victories and start bringing up the guys in AA and
- 23:56triple AI mean I'm tired of it. This is ridiculous.
- 23:59I'm paying 20 bucks a month to watch a guy get hit on the top
- 24:03of the head with a baseball. I mean, I could have caught that
- 24:07ball. A week ago, Mike, you told us
- 24:09they were going to be a 500 team the rest of the year.
- 24:11What happened? You know what I did?
- 24:13I. I did when I'm a when I'm wrong
- 24:15yeah you never make a talk show host, Mike.
- 24:18You just move on all right thanks, guys.
- 24:20Good to hear from your brother and we do we admit our we
- 24:23usually do we do yes, absolutely that's funny.
- 24:26Good for my did you see the play that he's talking about yes good
- 24:29God a week ago they're. Going to play 500 ball the rest
- 24:32of the year. They are playing better than the
- 24:35Rockies. Than the Rockies.
- 24:36Yeah, they're not the worst. Team Not the worst team.
- 24:39Can you be a Can you imagine being a fan of the Colorado
- 24:41Rockies? God Yep, I remember I was a fan
- 24:45of the Minnesota Twins in the 90s after night.
- 24:47But you won a world. Series that decade.
- 24:49I also watched them in 92 and 3 and 4.
- 24:52And you would love to watch them the entire 94.
- 24:54But sadly, that was taken away from us.
- 24:58Yeah, it's too bad. What could have been if it would
- 25:02have, should it? Time to try and win the $1000.

- 26:28that the Big 10 schools received here are in the process of
- 26:34receiving. Let's get to them.
- 26:35hawkeyeinsider.com. David joins us.
- 26:37David, Trent, Ken, thanks for coming on.
- 26:39How are you? Doing good man, Good to be
- 26:42talking to you. A beautiful day out.
- 26:44Just finally taking a deep breath, man.
- 26:46It feels like the craziness is finally slowing down, and not
- 26:50gonna lie to you, I'm pretty happy about it.
- 26:51I bet you are a couple of topics.
- 26:55We'll get to it. I guess we should start by just
- 26:57going back to Sunday. Obviously you were in the
- 26:59building for the Indiana Fever exhibition game, preseason game
- 27:03against the Brazil national team. 1.3 million people turned
- 27:08on their televisions on a Sunday afternoon in early May to watch
- 27:13that. I was one of them, at least for
- 27:14the 1st 24 minutes and then enough's enough.
- 27:18You know what, it was just, it was just, there was no
- 27:21competition whatsoever, but it was good to watch.
- 27:24And obviously the the welcome that Caitlin received when she
- 27:28was back home, that was certainly to be expected.
- 27:32But just your thoughts on the overall day?
- 27:36I mean, it's pretty incredible. I mean, I think you go back to
- 27:38even when they introduced the starting lineups, I mean, every
- 27:41single Fever starter had at least 110 decibels.
- 27:44I mean, it wasn't just Caitlin. It kind of goes back to what she
- 27:47said back in college, right? Yeah, they might.
- 27:49TuneIn for me, but they learned to support everybody and they
- 27:53support everybody. I mean that's why you know, Kate
- 27:55Martin's an all time favorite. Gabby Marshall got a standing
- 27:58ovation when she walked in the building.
- 28:01They didn't the camera didn't show her.
- 28:02There was no announcement. She just walked in and everybody
- 28:05recognized that immediately gave her kind of a hero's welcome
- 28:09back. But you know, it's just one of
- 28:11those things man, where I do think the WNBA, the fever, I
- 28:13think they're going to need to really take a serious look at
- 28:16doing it again in a couple years.
- 28:17I think it was a success from all angles.
- 28:20And I've said this for the last few years.
- 28:22I think you look at the support that women's basketball has in
- 28:25the state of Iowa, whether it be Iowa State top 10 attendants,
- 28:29you and I, Drake with Cage in a beer and obviously Iowa, I think
- 28:32Des Moines should put in a fever, put in a bid to be an
- 28:35expansion team for the WNBAII. Really do think it would work.
- 28:39I think Wells Fargo would be a really good place for that.
- 28:42But just kind of focused on Caitlin specifically.
- 28:44Man is every single time there's a moment she just lives up to
- 28:47it. And you know, I know people want
- 28:49to say, oh, it's a 60 point blowout, but man, she pulled up
- 28:52from 36 feet and that was her only shot attempt from that far.
- 28:55So it wasn't like she got four or five attempts from her spot
- 28:58to do it. She just did it.
- 29:00And again, to just kind of be so consistent at that level to
- 29:04continue to live up to the hype and create those iconic moments
- 29:07in an exhibition game, by the way, it's just it's just
- 29:12special, man. It really, really was another
- 29:13all time day in a Carver Hawkeye arena.
- 29:16Taking it a step further on the women's basketball program, the
- 29:19momentum that's been created, Emily Rodriguez, they had her
- 29:23coming in on campus for a visit from Central Florida.
- 29:26Kind of that next step for GM Jensen's program because people
- 29:29see it. You saw pros talking about the
- 29:31environment at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
- 29:33Got to keep this going on the women's side.
- 29:35How does that continue and what can you tell us about Rodriguez?
- 29:39Yeah, I mean, I think she'd be kind of that final piece to the
- 29:41puzzle for next year's team. I think she's a really versatile
- 29:43player, only shot 33% from 3 point range, but fundamentally
- 29:48sure shot mechanic I think looks good.
- 29:50I think she could get up to about 3536%.
- 29:53But she's a solid rebounder, a very reliable defender and I
- 29:56think the best basketball is ahead of her.
- 29:58So she is going to be on campus I believe Monday and then she's
- 30:02going to go to Indiana the day after.
- 30:04So I know Jan Jansen is working hard on that one.
- 30:07But you're exactly right. I know obviously the game
- 30:10against with the fever is not was not an Iowa event, but I do
- 30:14think that Jan and company are going to use that kind of
- 30:16leverage to all recruits. Like look at this like this is
- 30:20the type of environment that Carver Hawkeye does create.
- 30:23But you know, if they can land Rodriguez, I think that'd be a
- 30:25great piece for next year. But I've said this on my message
- 30:28board. I've said for the past few
- 30:29months, man, the 2026 class has a chance to really be special
- 30:34for Iowa and they are competing with the big fish.
- 30:37I mean, I they're right in the thick of it for number one
- 30:39overall prospect, Kate Harpering, who has offers from
- 30:42everywhere in the world. Basically, McKenna will let's
- 30:45go. I think Iowa has another
- 30:47realistic. I would say at this point I was
- 30:50in their top three and those are two of the top three prospects
- 30:53in the entire country. And I was working on several
- 30:55other five stars. So, you know, I think getting
- 30:58Lashondra Bear, the new assistant coach, is going to be
- 31:00big. I think she's a tremendous
- 31:02recruiter and obviously Iowa just has the recruiting
- 31:05resources for her to kind of maximize her capabilities as
- 31:09well. So obviously Gang Rodriguez on
- 31:11campus is big. I think ideally they want to
- 31:13lock her down before she has a chance to go to Indiana.
- 31:16It'll be interesting to see if they can do that.
- 31:19But you're exactly right. I still think there's a ton of
- 31:21momentum with the program, but they definitely need to lock in
- 31:23some of these top prospects. Then I think Iowa fans need to
- 31:26continue to learn how to be comfortable with the
- 31:28uncomfortable because you know what happens with five stars?
- 31:30They're recruiting recruitment's drag out and drag out and you're
- 31:34competing against the big time people.
- 31:36So it it'll be kind of fun to see how these next few months
- 31:38shake out. I was of the opinion that the
- 31:42the attendance numbers were going to come back down a little
- 31:45bit, not off the face of the of Cliff, but by any means.
- 31:48But they because last year was impossible to get a ticket.
- 31:51I thought this year coming up that you know what the ticket
- 31:54availability is going to be there.
- 31:56You'll be able to get tickets. Maybe game day they're still
- 31:58going to draw over 10,000, but I'm not so sure anymore.
- 32:01I think, I think that the interest is still there.
- 32:03What about ticket sales and knowing that they're seemingly
- 32:06McCollum is building momentum, What what's what's attendance
- 32:11like for women's basketball? Same as last year or a little
- 32:14bit lower? I think it's going to be a
- 32:17little bit lower, but I don't think it's going to be by much.
- 32:19I really don't. I just think you look at the way
- 32:22Jan Jensen was received at that Indiana Fever game, by the way,
- 32:26I mean, she spoke to the crowd, asked people to keep coming out,
- 32:29right? There was a lot more Iowa
- 32:30centric stuff for a fever event then I I thought there was going
- 32:34to be. But I think Jan Jensen, just
- 32:36kind of her being in Iowa and her connecting with the
- 32:39community and just the iconic moments that have happened over
- 32:42the last few years, right? I mean, even last year they sold
- 32:45out their season tickets so early.
- 32:46I think Lucy Olson played a big part in that.
- 32:48But you're going to get a senior hand, Skokie, you're going to
- 32:50get a freshman class that people really connect with.
- 32:52Ava Hayden is going to be there. They have chitchat, right?
- 32:55I mean, they're going to have people I think really connect
- 32:58with them. And also Kylie Fierbach coming
- 33:00back. I I think that's a very kind of
- 33:02underrated addition and next year's team as well.
- 33:04So maybe Ben McCollum and in the rise of Iowa Mens basketball
- 33:08tenants levels out the woman's a little bit.
- 33:11But I do think that's an exciting time to be a fan of
- 33:13both programs because I mean, I know what you guys probably want
- 33:15to get to the men's side of things, but I really, really
- 33:17like the way that that roster is shaking out.
- 33:19I think there's a lot of potential there.
- 33:22And if and if the women can get Emily Rodriguez, I mean, I still
- 33:25think they're going to be a 20 plus win team next year at
- 33:27least. Let's go to that men's side,
- 33:29still looking in the portal. Is Ben Mccollum's Group One of
- 33:33the names that have been speculated about?
- 33:35I know truly, Donovan's site had a lot about this.
- 33:37Was it Theus De Ritter kid from Belgium?
- 33:39Big kid, sounds like how big, Like 6-8, but he's 22 years old,
- 33:44thick, strong, good rebounder. Now, maybe Virginia's the front
- 33:48runner there. What can you tell us about that
- 33:50and the two guards that they've had on campus the last couple of
- 33:52weeks? Yeah.
- 33:53So I mean, you're right. I mean Deridder's obviously been
- 33:56names been thrown around and in the wingspan.
- 33:59I mean that's what's made of such an effective rebounder.
- 34:01I would say that Virginia is the kind of the clubhouse leader at
- 34:05that point. And it is kind of interesting to
- 34:07watch Ben McCollum try to get in with with the Euro market,
- 34:11right? I think that's kind of an
- 34:12untapped potential there. I mean, obviously now there's a
- 34:15director of scouting. I think Ben McCollum has
- 34:17finalized a deal for a new strength coach.
- 34:20I expect that announcement to be coming out here in the next
- 34:22couple of days. But, you know, it's interesting
- 34:25watching McCollum work because he just, it doesn't seem to be a
- 34:28panic among McCollum among any of the coaches.
- 34:32Like, they're very patient about who they're trying to get with
- 34:35this team. I know he's a gift of another
- 34:36guy that Iowa had had significant traction with.
- 34:39I think things have kind of stalled out, even though there
- 34:41was some early momentum. And I was told by two sources,
- 34:45you know, a week and a half ago that he was going to commit.
- 34:49But I think kind of with the Ritter's emergence and kind of
- 34:52them figuring out the way they want the roster to look, one
- 34:55thing I will give McCollum and company respect about guys is
- 34:59they're not going to overpay for anybody.
- 35:01They don't care. They they believe in their
- 35:02development. They believe that they can go
- 35:04out and get the right pieces for the right price.
- 35:07And I don't think Ben McCollum and company are going to want to
- 35:10get in much of A bidding war. I think when you listen to him
- 35:13talk about the the culture he wants to create with team mantra
- 35:18and kind of being a servant first, whether we serve in the
- 35:21community, serving for your teammates.
- 35:23He doesn't want guys are trying to hold out.
- 35:25Getting and bidding wars was cold.
- 35:26I think he's very comfortable tying ties and going to find the
- 35:29right pieces. And I still think that I need
- 35:31maybe one or two more pieces. I would like for them to add
- 35:34another kind of lengthy stretch 5, even if it's a 686 foot nine
- 35:38guy that can get a lot of rebounds.
- 35:41But I also think that they're not panicking.
- 35:43They're not going to overpay for for A5 that, you know, the
- 35:47market so slim. I mean, I've been hearing that
- 35:49there have been guys averaged 9 points and seven rebounds.
- 35:52They're getting one point, 7 million in the portal.
- 35:55And I mean, that's, I hate to say it, that's kind of
- 35:57pedestrian numbers forever big, but that's just the way the
- 36:01market is right now. And I think they would rather
- 36:04use that money to get a guy like Alvaro Fugueris do.
- 36:07I think you look at the pick and roll potential, pick and pop
- 36:09potential with him, then it starts and you have Brendan
- 36:12Howleson on the wing. That's not going to be fun for
- 36:15opposing defense to play against.
- 36:17No, that's for sure. Is there?
- 36:18I I thought I read an article. A Texas A&M kid will reenter the
- 36:23portal. Miles.
- 36:25Maybe his last name, June. Do you know who I'm talking
- 36:27about? Miles Duke.
- 36:28OK, what's is, is Iowa in on him?
- 36:32I think they're doing their homework on them.
- 36:34I still think they're investigating a few other Portal
- 36:36pieces. I don't know how much traction
- 36:39there's going to be, but I'm not going to say the name
- 36:42specifically, But I'll give you another update.
- 36:44Just kind of what the market is right now.
- 36:46I mean guys, there are people in the Portal right now that
- 36:48averaged 4 points a game that believe they were in the wrong
- 36:51system and their camp wants $1,000,000.
- 36:55But that's where we're at right now.
- 36:57And again, I'm not blaming the kids.
- 36:59I'm paying more. For the agent than anything else
- 37:02and the people around them. But I think people are going to
- 37:05I think it's going to come back down to reality here over the
- 37:08next couple of years because people are not going to pay for
- 37:11pedestrian production. And I'll tell you the level of
- 37:14accountability that athletes. The Trent and I've made a living
- 37:17at it. Pick up the joint, it's going to
- 37:19be bad. Oh my gosh, that is truly
- 37:22something. Get you out on a football
- 37:24question here, David, Final minute with you had an article I
- 37:27saw you just posted at Hawkeye Insider just a little bit ago
- 37:30about what you want to see from the offense.
- 37:32It feels like everybody's bought in here.
- 37:35Are you diving head first? I mean, you're not dipping your
- 37:38toe in. This offense is going to look
- 37:39different this year. I got my foot in.
- 37:42I got both. I got one right.
- 37:46I want to see more backyard football and I think Tim Lester
- 37:49is going to let that happen. I mean, I think you'll get Mark
- 37:51Granowski. I mean, I'm very curiously how
- 37:53his shoulder rehabs going if he can create chemistry with the
- 37:56wide receivers. I like the offensive line.
- 37:59I like the idea of Jazzine Patterson, Kamari Moulton.
- 38:01I like the receiver room. Don't know how many all
- 38:03conference guys they have, but they have some depth.
- 38:05And again, I think Mark Granowski is the guy that can
- 38:07make the offense go. I need to see a little bit more
- 38:09out of that strain in the tight ends, but it just feels like
- 38:13it's going to be a little bit different this year.
- 38:15And I know people have heard that before, but they also
- 38:17haven't had a second year. Tim Lester.
- 38:19So I'm kind of in on it right now.
- 38:21I'm not going to lie. We'll see.
- 38:22I got my foot in right now. Yeah, I think that's there's a
- 38:25lot of people in that gap, no doubt about it.
- 38:28David Eichel, thank you for what you do for us.
- 38:30Appreciate it. We will talk to you and we'll
- 38:32see you down the road. hawkeyeinsider.com.
- 38:34Thank you, David Eichel. Yeah.
- 38:37Good to talk to you, buddy. David Eichel, we check in on
- 38:40Iowa. We'll take a time out, come back
- 38:42and finish up the hour. But, Trent, we got a little
- 38:45homework to do before we do that.
- 38:47As you know, taking place at Principal Park this weekend, the
- 38:51Hawkeye Bat baseball team is hosting Oregon State.
- 38:55All the proceeds from this tournament go to Hawkeye
- 38:58baseball. Prince, the I Cubs don't get
- 39:00anything. Maybe concessions.
- 39:01We're not even sure about that. But if you want to go, we've got
- 39:042-4 packs right now. First two callers, you can
- 39:08either choose first caller gets Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
- 39:12And we'll save whatever tickets we have left for tomorrow.
- 39:15But if you can go Saturday, let me get the game times right in
- 39:19front of me here. So first pitch Friday is 635,
- 39:22first pitch Saturday is 335. First pitch Sunday is 12 O 5.
- 39:27You have a four pack of tickets to see Hawkeye Baseball just for
- 39:31the asking. You choose the day.
- 39:34We'll do that at 515-284-5966. Miller and Condon back to wrap
- 39:39up the hour in the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 39:41All right, Miller and Condon, welcome back Iowa Sports Radio
- 39:44Network. Trent Condon, Ken Miller taking
- 39:46you until 2:00. So we don't have a ton of time
- 39:49to do this, but a little sample of this because I've I've had
- 39:52some fun with this yesterday. So this apparently is every
- 39:55Major League Baseball players best player ever.
- 39:59Oh OK, each team best player ever.
- 40:01So I'm just going to throw a couple of teams and just see
- 40:03what what pops in your mind first.
- 40:06I'll do the regionals. How about that?
- 40:08Kansas City Royals, George Brett.
- 40:10George Brett is who they came up with.
- 40:12Chicago Cubs. Chicago Cubs Chicago best
- 40:18player. Ever.
- 40:20Best player ever. Ever.
- 40:22Best player ever, Best player ever.
- 40:25Ernie Banks. Oh, of course.
- 40:27Yeah, jeez, I overthought that one.
- 40:29Chicago White Sox. Chicago White, Frank Thomas.
- 40:31That's who they have on the list.
- 40:34Now let's find your twins. Harm and killebrew.
- 40:37Good one, Trent. That's not who they went with.
- 40:39Kirby Puckett. Yeah.
- 40:41Two World Championships. Saint Louis Cardinals.
- 40:44Not Ozzy Smith. No, but that would have been a
- 40:48good one. Bob Gibson, that's another good
- 40:50one. It's got a statue, but I think
- 40:52both of those other. Guys, Sam usual.
- 40:54Sam usual. That's a list.
- 40:56It is. It's a pretty fun exercise,
- 40:58right? Just what name comes into your
- 41:00head first of all? Well, David Kaplan comes into
- 41:02mine and you'll be on your radio when we come back.
- 41:05We'll talk Chicago sports with Cappy, then we'll do the
- 41:07Cardinals with Brian Walton. Trying to make some plays of the
- 41:10day. Hour to Go, Miller and Condon,
