- 1:07which we do with all donations of seven dollars or more. In addition,
- 1:12during our listener Support campaign, all donations of twenty dollars or more will

- 1:22will send everyone a free copy of All I Needed to Know I Learned from
- 1:29Colombo, the Digital Book, at no cost to them. In addition,
- 1:34we'll send one other item at the twenty dollars level. We have one of
- 1:40the great colonial radio theater Perry Mason dramas, including the first five Perry Mason
- 1:47books by Earl Stanley Gardner. You can choose any one of the five that
- 1:51they have produced or their father Brown Stories. That's at the twenty dollars level.
- 1:56At one hundred dollars level, we have something I think listeners of this
- 1:59show will endure, and that is a copy of The Who Is Johnny Dollar
- 2:04Matter? By John Abbott, one of the three volumes in there, and
- 2:07I'll tell you a little bit more about that. That's available to folks in
- 2:09the US in Canada, and it's one of the definitive research books on yours
- 2:15truly Johnny Dollar, and I use it while I'm recording the show. One
- 2:20nice feature is it includes scripts, not scripts, but summaries of most of
- 2:25the lost episodes, and that's helped us a couple of times. So we'll
- 2:29talk a little bit more about that because I needed to use that book for
- 2:34some of the post show commentary. And after we finished the commentary, be
- 2:39sure to listen as we'll announce what new shows will be coming to Wednesday in
- 2:46the next season on the Great Detectors of Old Time Radio. So here now
- 2:51is The Bennett Matter, Parts three and four from Hollywood. It's time now
- 2:58for Johnny Dollar Andrew Court, Johnny, how's it going, Andy? All
- 3:04the police have been talking to that arsonist, George Foley all night long.
- 3:07You won't admit a thing, won't talk about anything. I'm wondering now how
- 3:10long they can hold it. He's the man who fired that building. Andy.
- 3:13We've got to have something more for the District attorney, Johnny. We
- 3:15haven't tied Folly to Bennett at all. If we can definitely charge him with
- 3:20firing that building, then we'll have a lever to go after Bennett. I
- 3:23got an idea. What meet you in an hour tonight and every weekday night?
- 3:34Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense
- 3:38Account America's fabulous freelanced Insurance Investigator Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Expense account submitted by
- 3:55Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the four State Fire Insurance Operation forty sixty five Spear
- 4:00Boulevard, Hertford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting of expended yours during
- 4:05my investigation of the Bennett Arson matter. Expense account Adams six one dollars,
- 4:14two drinks, Andrew Cord and myself in Cookie's Place, half a block from
- 4:17San Francisco's Hall of Justice, and he's a good insurance man thorough Well,
- 4:26it's pretty certain I'll have to release Fully unless he admits something or we can
- 4:30find more evidence against him. How about Bennett? Still, no word,
- 4:34Johnny. You can see what we're up against. Yeah, well one,
- 4:41no, no, thanks, giant's But listen, we had this case tied
- 4:47into Tony Midas until he turned up dead, a vengeance motive against Bennett for
- 4:51sending him to prison five years ago. Yeah, all right, Now we
- 4:55know it wasn't Midas, and we're sure it's this George Foley, at least
- 4:58according to Bill underwe and Bill certainly knows the arson racket. Yeah, no,
- 5:01man better? All right, then who shot Bennett? No, I
- 5:04don't know, Johnny, but that's not our worry at the moment. Andy
- 5:08think it might have been Fully, it couldn't have been Midas. But there
- 5:12is someone else, you mean Bennett's Nie? Sure, sure is niece.
- 5:16She had a reason because of what Bennett did to Midas. It was her
- 5:19husband, and she's got a reason to help us. Nobody can find her,
- 5:23Nobody knows where she is. They'll find her, and I want to
- 5:26make a deal. What sure. If I find her, I'll ask her
- 5:30what information she can give us about Bennett and Folly. Possibly she has something
- 5:33she said she did once. Now look, if she shot her uncle,
- 5:36she'll have to stand for a sullen attempt to kill. Can we give her
- 5:40legal help in her case? Johnny, I don't know. I want to
- 5:44know if I can promise her that if I see her, can I well,
- 5:47you can tell her that we'll do what we can the very best that
- 5:50we can. Okay, good, want another drink? No thanks, John,
- 5:56all right, I'll try and get in touch with Elizabeth Bennett. Police
- 6:00haven't gotten anywhere. Oh, I've been here two days and I got friends
- 6:02all over this town. Expense account item seven one dollar and five cents camp
- 6:10fare from the Hall of Justice to the apartment house at Marty Angle. Lawyer,
- 6:15philosopher and egg poacher again. Yeah, you better close that door and
- 6:23lock in, mister Engle. It's awful late for this, you drunk.
- 6:27Nope, locked Now what you asked me if I ever found Tony Midas to
- 6:35tell you about it. We found a mister Engel. He's dead, oh
- 6:41no, oh, yes, and he didn't do any of the things we
- 6:44thought he might have done. I'm here to find out what you might have
- 6:46done. How did he die tuberculosis? He's at it for two years to
- 6:50know? No, I didn't know. I didn't know about it. I
- 6:56don't know how to figure you angle. I haven't been able to ever since
- 6:59I met you. It doesn't make any difference what I think of you.
- 7:01But it does make a difference how you answer one question A lot of difference
- 7:05to you. What is it? Did you help Arnold Bennett frame Tony Midas
- 7:11and send him up to San Quentin? You say Tony is dead? Now
- 7:14what difference did you help Bennett frame him? No? I told you I
- 7:16defended Tony Midas in court. I tried my best to get him off.
- 7:20That's the Truth's sure that. I'm an honest man, if not a successful
- 7:25one. I told you the truth, all right. Then if that's the
- 7:29truth, you're not in any trouble and you can unlock that door. But
- 7:31if it's not the truth, you might get yourself killed. Why do you
- 7:34say that? Because somebody took a shot at Arnold Bennett last night, but
- 7:39he was lucky it didn't kill him, but it came pretty near. You
- 7:42know that somebody was Elizabeth. That's a good guess. She hasn't got anything
- 7:47to lose now she lost her husband. She might be out getting even for
- 7:50him if he was framed, and she thinks you helped frame him. I
- 7:55tell you I didn't frame him. I defended him. I think Bennett stacked
- 7:59every thing against him. I told you that once. I think Midas was
- 8:03an innocent man. But there was nothing I could do it. What were
- 8:11you expecting? No one ask who it is? Go ahead and ask what
- 8:16it is. Who is it, Elizabeth, Bennett, mister Angel, tell
- 8:20her just a minute, just a minute, Elizabeth. Okay, over there,
- 8:24go on, get down fast. No, you don't angle, call
- 8:33a police. Hold holden, Elizabeth, hold it up. You're hurt.
- 8:52Your hurt. I'm all right. Did I kill him? Did I kill
- 8:56Elizabeth? You didn't kill him in the autumn he did. I don't know
- 9:00what you're talking about. He didn't have anything to do with framing Tony.
- 9:03He just told me and he was lying. He should be dead. And
- 9:07none of this will bring Tony back to you. Come on, now,
- 9:09come on, let's get back. How many triumphs have you met in your
- 9:18life, mister darnad? A few? Come on, Come on, when
- 9:20you met my uncle Arnold, you met a real one. He stole money
- 9:24from himself and made it look like Tony did it, and that one in
- 9:26there helped him. Why didn't you let me kill it? You're wrong about
- 9:28angle. He didn't help you or uncle. He tried to help Tony honestly,
- 9:33and I'm glad I didn't kill him. How's my uncle? He's getting
- 9:37better? Will he go to prison? We have to prove he hired somebody
- 9:41to fire the office building. He hired George Fowley. I know that,
- 9:46would you swear? Can you? Yes? He blamed it on Tony.
- 9:52When I went over to see Tony last month in the prison hospital, he
- 9:56was dying. Oh, I knew it. Had that look in his eyes,
- 10:01helpless, and he knew what my uncle had done to him, and
- 10:05he couldn't do anything about it. But you figured you could. You shot
- 10:09your uncle when you found out Tony was dead, and you came here to
- 10:13kill Ankle. I I thought he helped Unclarnal send Tony to prison. I
- 10:16thought he helped kill Tony. They did kill him, you know, when
- 10:20they sent him to prison. They killed him as surely as if they shot
- 10:24him down. Five years. I waited for Tony to get out of that
- 10:28awful place. I waited to hold him in my arms and tell him it
- 10:33was all over. Five years. I waited to help him forget his hate,
- 10:39my hate. I loving him so much every day that No, he's
- 10:48dead. What can you hire anybody to about what they've done to Tony?
- 10:56Look at me, mister dolla, I'm I'm not what you'd call beautiful.
- 10:58I'm not even pretty. Nobody ever looked at me twice until total he looked
- 11:05at me, and he loved me. And now he's dead. And I
- 11:13didn't sun, I didn't, I know, be glad when I'm dead.
- 11:18Surely in this neighborhood. Wait a minute, what's that? No one's hurts,
- 11:31Come on, Elizabeth. Elizabeth Bennett made a statement down at the Hall
- 11:43of Justice admitting she fired a shot at Arnold Bennett, hoping to kill him.
- 11:46She also admitted the assault on the lawyer Marty Engel. Charges were immediately
- 11:50filed and she was held in the woman's section of the city jail. In
- 11:54a separate statement, she told how she had seen Nold Bennett meet George Foley
- 11:58in a downtown bar. Folly still maintained that he had nothing to do with
- 12:01the fire in the Bennett building and denied any connection with Arnold Bennett. I
- 12:05gave Elizabeth Bennett statement. Andy Courtney took it to the Assistant District Attorney.
- 12:09I was still in the Hall of Justice when Marty Angel came in. Darla,
- 12:20Oh, how long was strangle? How is Elizabeth? They're holding her?
- 12:24I'm not going to press any charges. That's pretty decent of you,
- 12:31mister Engle. She's a pretty unhappy girl. I'd like to help her.
- 12:35Her uncle will probably press charges against her. I'd like to defend her.
- 12:41What she needs a lawyer. I didn't do very well for her husband.
- 12:46Maybe I can do better for her. I hope. So funny world,
- 12:52isn't it not tonight? It isn't no, I guess not. Oh,
- 13:00I'll see you, mister dollar, right, Johnny? Oh, Andy,
- 13:07Hi, kid, you want to pat yourself on the back. They're going
- 13:11to go ahead against George Folly for the Arson job. Enough for them,
- 13:15now, Huh. That's a pretty good case against him. Whether he opens
- 13:18up and talks or not, a statement from him would still be better always.
- 13:22But he's been around Johnny, he hasn't given anybody the time of day
- 13:26yet. Yeah, all about Elizabeth Bennett. I can arrange counsel for she's
- 13:30already got a lawyer. Andy, Okay, then we'll pay his fee.
- 13:31He doesn't want any fee. What's the matter? Kid? Oh? Maybe
- 13:39all this has been a little too much. And what time is it?
- 13:43Ten fifteen? There's a plane out at midnight? If you don't need me
- 13:46anymore, I think I'll be getting back to Hartford. Sure, Johnny,
- 13:50Sure, I'll look after things here. Expenser cad Item seven forty nine dollars
- 13:58sixty five cents. Hotel and meals in San Francisco. Itam eight same as
- 14:03Item three. Transportation back to Hartford. I caught the midnight plan. It
- 14:07was in Hertford at two o'clock the next afternoon. I went directly to my
- 14:09apartment and went to bed. I was awake in the following morning about seven
- 14:13o'clock. What Johnny Dollar, San Francisco calling mister Dollar. Okay? Is
- 14:26this mister Dollar? Yes, yes, mister Andrew Cord is calling one moment.
- 14:28Please go ahead, please, Johnny, Hi, can you come back
- 14:33to San Francisco right away? Well? I just got home and we need
- 14:37you again. Jake Eggleston is going to defend Foley in court. Eggleston,
- 14:43he's already got him out on the writ. What this case is worth half
- 14:46a million dollars towards Johnny. If anything happens that Foley gets off, we
- 14:50won't have a chance to get Bennett. You sounds scared. I am.
- 14:52Somehow Bennett's holding the best cards again. We got a good case against Foley.
- 14:58Once that settle, we can get Bennett. I want to make sure.
- 15:01Okay, okay, I'll get the first plane. Thanks Johnny. Even
- 15:09as I hung up the phone, I was thinking, at Marty Engel's words,
- 15:11You'll never get Arnold Bennett's He's too good for your dollar, too good
- 15:16for your insurance company, your fire investigators, everybody, no stronger man ever
- 15:20lived, he said. And somebody had to prove angle was wrong, Johnny
- 15:43Dollar andrew court, Johnny, do you have? And I stripped back to
- 15:46the first goal. I slept most of the way. How's it going?
- 15:48Good and bad? Johnny? Good that we've got George fully on trial for
- 15:52setting fire to the building. Bad that we haven't connected him to Bennett yet.
- 15:56And Bennett's the guy we want now. Once you get a conviction on
- 15:58fully, you can go after Bennett. A lot of expert testimony has been
- 16:00thrown around here, and the jury's been sleeping through most of it. Besides
- 16:03that, Fowley's got one of the best defensemen of the business, Jake Eggleston.
- 16:07Yeah, I've heard of him. He's pretty slick. He's going to
- 16:10make us lose this case, Johnny, not if I can help it.
- 16:21Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the Four State Fire Insurance Corporation,
- 16:26forty sixty five Spear Boulevard, Hertford, Connecticut. The following is an
- 16:30accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the Bennett matter. Expense account Item nine
- 16:38one hundred and twenty four dollars air transportation Hartford back to San Francisco again and
- 16:44the Bennett case, which I thought was finished with. I was at the
- 16:47whole of justice by nine thirty I met Andrew Court outside of the Superior Court.
- 16:52This may be the last day of the trial, Johnny, anything new
- 16:56since I talked to you on the phone, and well, I may be
- 16:59worrying for nothing, since Finley has handled it all pretty well for the state.
- 17:03He's one of the assistant to Yea's. But Foley's still holding on too,
- 17:06a not guilty plate. Well, wasn't that just coaching? Oh?
- 17:08Maybe you remember Foley didn't make any statement when we took him, and the
- 17:12police got nothing out of him at all. Folly had something like twenty eight
- 17:17arrests besides two convictions, you know the ropes. Yeah, well that's okay,
- 17:22sure, just in time. Yeah, it seems to be the clerk
- 17:32now. Yeah, all his nonsession as Honor Judge William J. Bainbridge presiding,
- 17:40everybody's dad saying BC. Then John Dallah, Hey, oh, I
- 17:52didn't think they'd call you first. No strage right hand, he's almost where
- 18:03the testimony. You're about to give us the truth, the whole truth.
- 18:04Nothing about the truth, the help of God. I do PC. As
- 18:11you know, I'm Charles Finley with the District Attorney's office. State your name,
- 18:15please, Johnny Dollar, state your occupation please. I'm an insurance investigator.
- 18:21How long have you been engaged in your profession as an insurance investigator?
- 18:26Ten years or more? Tell us please? Prior to that, what kind
- 18:29of work did you do? I was in the United States Marine Corps for
- 18:32four years. Before that, I was detective sergeant's second grade with the New
- 18:36York Police Department. Do you have any papers or letters in your possession that
- 18:40verify your professional status? Mister Dollar, Yes, I do. I have
- 18:42letters of reliability from thirteen insurance companies and adjustment bureaus I've been associated with,
- 18:48and my record is police officer. Thank you. Will the court clerk please
- 18:52hand these papers to Council for the Defense so he may examine them. Yes,
- 18:56sir, thank you. Now tell us what your connection with this case
- 19:00is. Mister Dalla, I was employed by the Force State Fire Insurance Corporation
- 19:06of Hartford, Connecticut to conduct an investigation in regard to one of their policyholders,
- 19:10Arnold Bennett. Yes, Arnold Bennett. Will you please tell the court
- 19:12what the results of that investigation were. The Bennett Building was destroyed by fire.
- 19:18I worked with arson experts for my own organization and with the police here
- 19:22to determine the cause of the fire. Go on, please. At the
- 19:26scene of the fire, are expert William Underwood located certain items which we recognized
- 19:32as part of the paraphernalia generally used by professional arsonists. Will you please state
- 19:36what those items were? A scrap of celluloid and a paraffin wick, anything
- 19:41else samples of the ashes which were later analyzed and proved to be celluloid ashes.
- 19:48I wish to remind the ladies and gentlemen of the jury that the public
- 19:52fire adjuster, the gentleman from the Skyline Laboratories, and the two gentlemen from
- 19:56the Fire Inspection Department have previously testified as to the the identity and uses of
- 20:00these items. Will you continue, mister Dolla. Well, these particular items
- 20:06suggested that the fire was of an incendiary origin. The next problem was to
- 20:11establish the exact method used in starting the fire? Were you able to determine
- 20:15that method? Yes, sir. In order to refresh the minds of the
- 20:18jury, would you mind describing what was established A heavy woolen wick, This
- 20:22one, mister Dollar, that one or one like it exhibit see Please continue.
- 20:29This wick had been soaked in paraffin and then stuffed into a paper sack
- 20:33that was filled with celluloid. It's a simple method. The wick is lit
- 20:37and it takes anywhere from three to ten minutes to burn down to the celluloid.
- 20:41Now, once that happens, the celluloid flares up and fires anything combustible
- 20:47in the vicinity, and that is the method you determined cause the fire on
- 20:49the Bennett Building. Yes, and I'd like to qualify that by saying,
- 20:53the arson experts from my own company and the gentleman from the police and fire
- 20:57departments here in Sanford, Cisco determined it definitely. Mister Dolla, by this
- 21:02means you connected the defendant, George Foley, with the fire you were investigating.
- 21:06Yes, we did. Oh, George Foley improvised the method I have
- 21:11just described. Improvised You mean it is his method? I object, your
- 21:15honor. The prosecution is putting words into the mouth of the witness. I'll
- 21:19rephrase for mister Eggleston. Is this method identifiable with the defendant? Yes,
- 21:25sir, Will you explain the identification. The police files here show that Foley
- 21:30has been convicted of setting two other fires in this state. On both occasions
- 21:36he employed that method of fire. Your honor, I object the career of
- 21:40the defendant as a professional arsonist. As a matter of public record, the
- 21:42defendant previous record has no bearing on this case. I have jested a dollar.
- 21:48Will you rephrase and delete any reference to the defendant's criminal history. The
- 21:53procedure in locating an arsonist is to first establish the method of operation. In
- 21:59this case, where the Wick celluloid method was used, the defendant's name came
- 22:03up immediately. The defendant made an attempt to call on Arnold Bennett in the
- 22:07hospital. The defendant was positively identified by three witnesses as the man they had
- 22:11seen near the Bennett building prior to the fire. I remind the jury of
- 22:15the testimony of those witnesses. Go on, mister Dolla. The police crime
- 22:18laboratory examined all of the clothing Foley was wearing at the time of his arrest
- 22:22and all of the clothing in his room. There was definite evidence that he
- 22:26had been in the Bennett building. Will you tell us what sort of evidence
- 22:30please? Oh, paint smudges on the soles of his shoes and metal filings
- 22:34in cups of his trousers, compared with samples who were still available in the
- 22:38building where certain painting and metal work had been in progress. You connected him
- 22:42with the improvised method of firing. You proved that paint smudges and metal filings
- 22:47came from the Bennett building. The defendant attempted to contact Arnold Bennett what else.
- 22:53Arnold Bennett's niece, Elizabeth Bennett informed me that her uncle, Arnold Bennett,
- 23:00hired the defendant to fire the building to collect insurance. I was on
- 23:11the stand all the rest of the morning. When Finley aendered his questioning,
- 23:15he turned me over to defense Council Eggleston. Eggleston contested every bit of established
- 23:19testimony and recommended that my remarks be stricken from the trial records. The summations
- 23:25came right after that, and then the case went to the jury. Expense
- 23:30account had him ten three dollars lunch for Andrew Court and myself only has to
- 23:34be convicted or will be on the defense when Bennet's insurance claim comes to court
- 23:38and we'll probably get stuck with it. And while the jury's out, why
- 23:41don't I go over to the jail and talk with Fully? What good would
- 23:44that do? Fully must know they'll give him the works if he admits something.
- 23:48He would admit nothing. He sits there in court like they were talking
- 23:52about someone else. Oh, Johnny, it's too late. Yeah, but
- 23:56if he did, you could go ahead and file criminal charges against Bennett,
- 23:59beat him to the punch. I'd like that. Oh, we get Folly
- 24:02and we've beaten Bennett, and I like that. The job of getting to
- 24:07a prisoner who was standing trial isn't an easy one, especially when he's under
- 24:11the surveillance of a smart defense attorney like Eggleston. I talked to Judge Brainbridge
- 24:15in his chambers and told him what I had in mind. I broke down
- 24:18the case against Folly as the insurance company saw it, and the possible case
- 24:22against Arnold Bennett if Foley was found guilty. Judge Brainbridge arranged for me to
- 24:26see Folly. He was sitting in his cut Eggleston was standing nearby. Hello
- 24:33Dollar, Hello, Eggleston, Hi, what do you want? Well,
- 24:38I thought we ought to talk about this thing while there's still time. If
- 24:42it's okay with you, mister, it's okay with me Dollar. I'll be
- 24:47right here some time for what to get your point of a break? Fully?
- 24:51Oh that's a real good one. You sit on a witness chair all
- 24:53morning, you tell him what a bad boy I am, and you walk
- 24:56in here and tell him you want to give me a break? I do
- 24:59go away. Now, wait a minute, George, it won't hurt to
- 25:02listen to it. Well, you're a great when you I'm a guy who's
- 25:03sitting in this cell. Both of you can walk out of here, have
- 25:06a good state for dinner, and I already George, listen to him.
- 25:08This isn't a court room. When you were first hauled in, Fully,
- 25:12you could have made a statement telling us Bennett hired you to fire that building,
- 25:15waved a jury trial, and thrown yourself on the mercy of the court.
- 25:19But you didn't do that. You made everybody work hard to give it
- 25:22to you. And that's exactly what they're going to do. That jury'll come
- 25:26out pretty soon and throw the book at you. Is that true. I'm
- 25:30not so sure of that. Dollar tell us precisely why you're here. You
- 25:33both know my companies after Ronald Bennett, he's filed claim against us for not
- 25:37paying off his fire policy. Fully, we know he hired you to fire
- 25:42that building. Yeah, and if you're smart, you'll send for the guard,
- 25:45make a request for the court to come back in session before the jury
- 25:48returns. You can tell them Bennett hired you. You can change your plea
- 25:52of guilty and throw yourself at the mercy of the court. It'll probably save
- 25:56you five years on your sentence. So I turn here, make everything nice
- 26:00for you to go after better. If you do that, his claim will
- 26:03be thrown out to the insurance commissioner will prefer charges against him, and he'd
- 26:06be right up there with me making little ones out of baby. That's right,
- 26:11you're overstepping your province here, dollar. I look, there isn't much
- 26:14time. Holy. This man can advise you to wait until the jury comes
- 26:17in and that won't be very long, but then it'll be too late for
- 26:19you to help yourself. I don't like this high pressure stuff. I don't
- 26:22care what you like or dislike, mister Eggleston. I'll listen fully. They've
- 26:26got an eight point case against you in they're is he rights. It doesn't
- 26:30make any difference. The jury is say it saved me five years? Yes,
- 26:36George? What do you think? Up to you? George, I've
- 26:42told you what I think a swell spots. Well, oh come on,
- 26:48come on, what is it? I'll risk you you're crazy. There's a
- 26:55chance those twelve plunk heads will walk out and till everybody I'm not guilty,
- 26:57Come on, get a Those last five years will be pretty hard. Wins.
- 27:04God, God, thank you for the offer. Just the same dollar
- 27:10you don't use your head much. Fully, it hadn't been for you,
- 27:12I wouldn't be in here, so don't worry too much about what happens to
- 27:15me. I went for guys like you, I wouldn't be in business,
- 27:18and I'm not worrying sala yeah, yeah, I hope they let me loseen
- 27:25this one to USA. Don't plan on it, and I kinda I'd like
- 27:30to kill you or something. Now here's our star to tell you about the
- 27:49final intriguing episode of this week's story tomorrow, a verdict in and out of
- 27:56a courtroom. The'll wind up, won't you? Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar?
- 28:22Yours Truly Johnny Dollar starrying Bob Bailey is transcribed in Hollywood. Written by
- 28:27John Dawson. It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone. Be sure to
- 28:33join us tomorrow night, same time and station for the next exciting episode of
- 28:37Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. This is Roy Rowan speaking Welcome back Well.
- 29:49The phrase uh no love loss comes to mind for that very intense encounter between
- 29:57Johnny and the Arson. Definitely, I think a good highlight. I loved
- 30:08I love the overall take of it. To me, the big nagging down
- 30:14in this whole scenario, is that the niece who's definitely got a grudge is
- 30:23the person who the prosecution case really rest on. And whether the jury picks
- 30:30up on that, I think is going to be an interesting question when we
- 30:33find out what the verdict is on Friday. I definitely sympathize with Johnny.
- 30:40You know, that's rough. You know, you fly home and immediately you
- 30:44hop a plane to go back country, back across the country to where you
- 30:48were. Definitely not a fun experience. Even flying back three days later,
- 30:57which was my latest flight this month, not a fun experience. The bright
- 31:03side, it was on the insurance company's time. I love the professional testimony,
- 31:07you know, Johnny testifying as an expert really established his bona fides.
- 31:17And I'm going to talk a little bit more about that in just a second,
- 31:19because there's actually quite a few details on there. But before we let
- 31:25the time get away from us, I need to let you know what programs
- 31:27were going to bring you next season on The Great Detectors of Old Time Radio.
- 31:33There are two types of programs. First of all, we are going
- 31:37to have one more one more situation that we will need to address where there's
- 31:45a missing episode or in one case there's a non part episode. In those
- 31:52cases we have we have a have the Friday episode with and then Wednesday,
- 32:04as we did with the McClean matter, we play a special where we play
- 32:07another series. So we're gonna have a couple specials thrown in the mix here.
- 32:13But I do want to let you know you will get to hear another
- 32:15one shot series. This one is starring Frank Lovejoy and the title is Here
- 32:20comes McBride. And then once we finish all of the five part Johnny Dollars,
- 32:28Wednesdays will become dedicated to the Adventures of Philip Marlowe, which is one
- 32:32of the best detective series ever done on radio, and certainly I would say
- 32:39the best in the hard boiled genre. Many would disagree, but that's my
- 32:45personal favorite. Okay, Well, now onto the testimony. It was somewhat
- 32:50interesting just because it kind of contradicted what we heard back during the back during
- 33:00the Edmund O'Brien years that Johnny Dollar was a Pinkerton man that's absent from his
- 33:08bio. Here, I want to I double checked in uh the uh John
- 33:15Abbott, who is a Johnny Dollar matter? And yeah it did it was
- 33:21the story that he began his career as a Pinkerton. Since it wasn't mentioned,
- 33:25I guess that's been wiped out. Not surprising in a way, continuity
- 33:30was not as big a deal, and particularly with Johnny Dollar, which had
- 33:37so many writers, and that was said, you know, five or six
- 33:39years ago at this point in the story. And uh, beyond the fact
- 33:47that he served in the Marines, according to Abbott, there's really not any
- 33:54real mention of his military service other than from a Charles Russell Johnny Dollar episode
- 34:04that Johnny served in the China Burma India theater during the war. There's also
- 34:09some suggestions in later episodes that he knows how to fly that doesn't necessarily wouldn't
- 34:15necessarily have and scuba dive wouldn't necessarily have come from the military. I do
- 34:21kind of find it surprising that he is portrayed as a member of the NYPD
- 34:30because he's been in New York quite a few times and I'm you know,
- 34:32already referring to his to the Bob Bailey years, and you know, he's
- 34:39never indicated that he's got a people he knows from the old days on the
- 34:49forest. It should be somewhat typical or like a special knowledge of the city.
- 34:55I will say that having John Abbott's Johnny Dollar book around has actually been
- 35:00pretty helpful as I've worked on the show and just a really neat fan resource.
- 35:07He's got list of how many times Johnny Dollar was shot, some pretty
- 35:13unique indexing of expense accounts, and recaps of the cases, which are sometimes
- 35:19helpful because I will sometimes say, Okay, did I actually hear that,
- 35:24and get some clarification from the book to make to verify that I'm hearing correctly,
- 35:31because sometimes due to a bad audio, it can be hard to tell.
- 35:34But he went through the actual scripts. So you would like to receive
- 35:38a copy as part of the listener support campaign for you for a donation of
- 35:44one hundred dollars or more as you're a thank you gift if in the USA
- 35:46or Canada, we'll send you your choice of volumes one, two, or
- 35:51three. Volume one covers the introduction, a lot of overview of the series,
- 35:57and all of the pre Bob Bailey episodes that were aired. Volume two's
- 36:00is the biggest one that's got all the Bob Bailey episodes in it, and
- 36:05volume three that includes the post Bob Bailey episodes, the auditions, as well
- 36:10as some miscellaneous information and indexes, and for two hundred donations of two hundred
- 36:16and fifty dollars or more, we can send you all three john Back emails
- 36:22in we turn out a listener, comments and feedback. As a listener of
- 36:24the original Johnny Dollar Show and a long time listener of your excellent, great
- 36:29detective series. I've always had an interest in the musical show associated with these
- 36:35shows. I rarely have ever hear you mentioned the music, so I thought
- 36:37you might be interested in the person who did much of the music for Bob
- 36:42Bailey's Johnny Dollar. As you've see in the attached article, Marino went on
- 36:45to a very successful career in music following his contributions to The Johnny Dollar Show.
- 36:53And the comment, you know, and I will say that, actually
- 37:00this is, you know, some of my favorite music for a detective series.
- 37:06I've heard it so many times almost take it for granted, but really
- 37:09it is. You know, it's great, exciting music. It's very similar
- 37:13in a way to what was later used on Sea Hunt. And I also
- 37:16heard I think the exact opening score used on old episodes of Dick Tracy and
- 37:30whether that was added in by syndicators or the DVD company, I'm not sure
- 37:34which, but it is definitely very solid music here. The information he had
- 37:38is actually from a blog. It's called what Became of Johnny Doller dot blogspot
- 37:44dot com and just maintains some you know, whatever little tidbits that can dig
- 37:51up, and the information that came about Amerigo Marino, who was of course
- 37:55the inspiration for the name of the Ricardo Amigo matter. And they point out
- 38:00the only Johnny Dollar that was the only genre dollar case to explicitly refer to
- 38:07a member of the show's production crew. He was born in nineteen twenty five
- 38:10and worked for many years, and is somewhat unique among the key figures of
- 38:16the show's mid nineteen fifties heyday. Well Bob Bailey and Jack Johnstone for the
- 38:21most part, withdrew from the spotlight after the end of the Golden Age of
- 38:24radio, and Marigo arguably went on to much bigger things. In nineteen sixty
- 38:29four, he became a music director and conductor of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra,
- 38:34a role he held for two decades, during which the ensemble and Marino himself
- 38:42attained national acclaim. So there you go. A very talented person and a
- 38:49really nice just a great, great score I think for Johnny Dollar that made
- 38:54this show just really stand out. Though I love this, this isn't actually
- 38:59my favorite theme, you'll get to hear that or favorite opening. You'll get
- 39:04to hear that tomorrow. Speaking of that, tomorrow we bring you Nick Carter,
- 39:07where you'll have no new episode announcements to Everything's status quo over there,
- 39:13and then join us back here on Friday as we wrap up the Bennett matter
- 39:17and continue on with Crime for a King in the meantime. Senor comments Box
