- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Tuesday.
- 0:14It's the 29th of October. I'm so glad to have your company
- 0:19as we are going to read another chapter of God's word together
- 0:22and you might say God's word. What is this Bible that we read?
- 0:27What is the point of this massive book, with all these
- 0:31strange and random stories connected together with this
- 0:34tenuous thread of inspiration by the Holy Spirit?
- 0:38I How does it work Well, this book it is entirely the manual
- 0:44that shares the story of God meeting and interacting with
- 0:49humanity. The Old Testament particularly
- 0:52documents in these long narrative forms, the way that
- 0:57God set things out for his people and the way that his
- 1:00people erred and went the wrong way, and then the way that God
- 1:04restored and set things out for his people again, and the way
- 1:08that his people went astray and came back again and again and
- 1:11again. That is the story, isn't it?
- 1:13And so when we read Nehemiah and we come across these lists and
- 1:17the things that people did, we might think, well, that's a bit
- 1:20random as far as history goes. And as I've said a few times,
- 1:24these are not history books. These are books that document
- 1:27God's faithful walk with his people.
- 1:31And so today we are going to talk about who it was that came
- 1:35back in and occupied Jerusalem because that was what God's
- 1:38promise was all along, that they would get to come back, that a
- 1:41remnant would come back to re occupy their holy city.
- 1:46And we know that that happened because obviously the New
- 1:48Testament plays out on the streets of Jerusalem with God's
- 1:51people living there. And so this today is the story
- 1:55of people reoccupying that space.
- 1:58And so that is our story for today, that we will hear who it
- 2:02is that comes back. So that there is hard evidence
- 2:04captured here in Nehemiah. And God is indeed faithful to
- 2:09his promises. So let's read it, shall we?
- 2:13Heck yeah. Let's read together Nehemiah
- 2:15Chapter 11. The leaders of the people were
- 2:27living in Jerusalem, the holy city.
- 2:30A tenth of the people from the other towns of Judah and
- 2:33Benjamin were chosen by sacred lots to live there too, while
- 2:37the rest stayed where they were. And the people commended
- 2:41everyone who volunteered to resettle in Jerusalem.
- 2:44Here is the list of the names of the provincial officials who
- 2:47came to live in Jerusalem. Most of the people, priests,
- 2:51Levites, temple servants and descendants of Solomon's
- 2:55servants continued to live in their own homes in the various
- 2:58towns of Judah. But some of the people from
- 3:01Judah and Benjamin resettled in Jerusalem from the tribe of
- 3:05Judah. Attire son of Uzziah, son of
- 3:09Zechariah, son of Amariah, son of Shepatiah, son of Mahalalel

- 5:06the Temple of God. Also Matanaya son of Micah son
- 5:10of Zabdi, a descendant of Asaph, who led in Thanksgiving and
- 5:14prayer. Also Bakbakaya who was
- 5:18Matanaya's assistant, and Abdah son of Shamua son of Galal son
- 5:24of Jedithan. In all, there were 284 Levites
- 5:28in the holy city from the gatekeepers Akub, Talmon and 172
- 5:34of their associates who guarded the gates.
- 5:37The other priests, Levites and the rest of the Israelites lived
- 5:40wherever their family inheritance was located in any
- 5:44of the towns of Judah. The temple servants, however,
- 5:47whose leaders were Zaya and Gisba, all lived on the hill of
- 5:51of Ophel. The chief officer of the Levites
- 5:54in Jerusalem was Uzzai son of Banay, son of Hashabaya son of
- 5:59Matanaya son of Micah, a descendant of Asaph, whose
- 6:03family served as singers at God's Temple.
- 6:06Their daily responsibilities were carried out according to
- 6:09the terms of a royal command. Petahaya son of Meshes, Abel, a
- 6:15descendant of Jera, son of Judah, was the royal advisor in
- 6:18all matters of public administration.
- 6:22As for the surrounding villages with their open fields, some of
- 6:25the people of Judah lived at Kiriath Arbour with its
- 6:28settlements, Dibon with its settlements, and Jacob Zeal with
- 6:32its villages. They also lived in Jeshua,
- 6:35Moladar, Beth Pellet, Hazashuel, Beersheba with its settlements,
- 6:41Ziklag and Makona with its settlements.
- 6:44They also lived in En Rimon, Zora, Jarmouth, Genoa, and

- 6:52They also lived in Lakish with its nearby fields and Azakar

- 7:00living all the way from Beersheba in the South to the
- 7:03valley of Hinnom. Some of the people of Benjamin
- 7:07lived in Giba, Mikmash, Ija, and Bethel with its settlements.
- 7:12They also lived in Anatoth, Nob, Ananiah, Hazor, Rama, Gitaim,
- 7:18Hadid, Zeboem, Nebulat, Lord Ono, and the valley of
- 7:24Craftsman. Some of the Levites who lived in
- 7:27Judah were sent to live with the tribe of Benjamin.
- 7:41Our Lord. We know that when you make a
- 7:43promise, you are good for it, and you are always true to Your
- 7:49word. And so we can rely on the
- 7:51promises that you make us. When you promise us that we are
- 7:57indeed your dearly beloved children, we know that's the
- 8:02truth. And when you promise that you
- 8:06are preparing a place for us to come and spend eternity with
- 8:10you, we know that that's the truth.
- 8:13And when you promise that there is nothing that could ever
- 8:19separate us from Your love, we know that that's the truth.
- 8:29Thank you for your generosity and your grace to us, and that
- 8:34we can always rely entirely on every word that you speak to us.
- 8:40We are your grateful and loved children, and it's in the name
- 8:45of Jesus that we pray all of these things.
- 8:48Amen.
