- 0:03Speaker 1: Some of the content of Patriots Unfiltered may not be
- 0:06Speaker 1: suitable for all audiences.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Listener discretion is advised. Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota.com.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Let me rub my crystal booty. I mean, ball. I
- 0:26Speaker 2: think I think he's the third best receiver or was
- 0:28Speaker 2: the third best receiver on the team.
- 0:30Speaker 3: I think that's probably fair. But when you talk about
- 0:32Speaker 3: the skill sets.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Now, here we go.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Well, you have to have some sort of speed on
- 0:37Speaker 3: the field.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Proceed.
- 0:38Speaker 3: But it's just different. Like it's he plays.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Well, obviously, it's different.
- 0:42Speaker 4: Well, don't ever say that if she asks. A lot
- 0:44Speaker 4: of people with Evan on this.
- 0:46Speaker 5: Y'all knowers.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Okay, I don't know what I know about that, but
- 0:49Speaker 2: let me tell you something.
- 0:50Speaker 3: My whole thing is theoretical.
- 0:52Speaker 1: It certainly is.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Well, I watch the tape, Paul, so you can say
- 0:55Speaker 3: it certainly is.
- 0:56Speaker 5: Oh, here we go.
- 0:57Speaker 2: You guys have convinced me. It's a great trade.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Dolly Parton does.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Thank you for making us the breast of that news.
- 1:03Speaker 2: This is Patriots Unfiltered. Presented by Toyota.com.
- 1:06Speaker 4: Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:10Speaker 2: All right. Oh, there we are. Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:13Speaker 4: Did we forget the name of the show?
- 1:16Speaker 2: I just heard Patriots.com and I got mixed up. Nice.
- 1:19Speaker 2: And I'm all kerfuffle because we're in.
- 1:22Speaker 4: We haven't been in the couches for a while.
- 1:24Speaker 2: We haven't been in couches for a while. Weird angle.
- 1:27Speaker 3: I feel very low.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:29Speaker 6: Mike and I had to use the couches yesterday for
- 1:31Speaker 6: the first time in a while. We taped our initial
- 1:34Speaker 6: PU on TV episode.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I just did my little segment.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Hopefully nothing changes.
- 1:39Speaker 3: But it is Tuesday.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Tuesday. Here at Gillette Stadium, and it's the week before
- 1:45Speaker 2: the first week of the NFL season. And we're getting closer.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Preseason's behind us. Training camp, for all intents and purposes,
- 1:56Speaker 2: is behind us, even though we're still able to go
- 1:59Speaker 2: see practice. No more public practice. No more preseason games.
- 2:04Speaker 2: No more full practice. We're on to Seattle.
- 2:07Speaker 4: It is regular season mode for practice, too.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:09Speaker 6: Whatever the small window is that the media can see, whatever,
- 2:12Speaker 6: 10 minutes, whatever.
- 2:14Speaker 2: And are they still limiting it to, like, one or
- 2:16Speaker 2: two people per outlet?
- 2:17Speaker 6: I think they'd like that, but, you know, some of
- 2:20Speaker 6: these outlets just have casts.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Clintus, they got the whole crew.
- 2:23Speaker 3: I wasn't going to name them. No, that's not really
- 2:28Speaker 3: a thing anymore, like one per outlet.
- 2:29Speaker 7: Oh, no?
- 2:30Speaker 5: No.
- 2:30Speaker 2: That's not a thing?
- 2:31Speaker 8: No.
- 2:31Speaker 1: All right.
- 2:32Speaker 4: It is for Patriots.com.
- 2:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:34Speaker 2: But we are on to Seattle, right? We're on to Seattle.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I think we're under the roster right now.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Well, yeah. Well, no, I mean, but yeah, we're going
- 2:41Speaker 2: to talk about all that because obviously Sunday and yesterday,
- 2:46Speaker 2: massive movement around the NFL. A lot of personnel movement,
- 2:50Speaker 2: including this team. You know, we got the release on
- 2:54Speaker 2: Sunday night and, you know, it's a paragraph this big
- 2:57Speaker 2: of names of people who are no longer with us.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Some who then came back and some who went other places.
- 3:05Speaker 3: They're alive.
- 3:06Speaker 2: And there are players from other teams who now came
- 3:10Speaker 2: to us. So I don't know how we want to
- 3:12Speaker 2: deal with this. How do we want to do this?
- 3:15Speaker 2: You want to just, let's do, what is the 53-man
- 3:20Speaker 2: roster now? We don't need to talk about who left.
- 3:22Speaker 9: You want all 53 names?
- 3:23Speaker 2: You know, people can figure that out for themselves. But
- 3:25Speaker 2: who is on the roster as of the moment? And
- 3:28Speaker 2: then we'll get on to the various lists.
- 3:29Speaker 4: But we're not going to, like, name 53 players, are we?
- 3:31Speaker 5: Yes, we are.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I mean, I could. By position.
- 3:34Speaker 3: At this point, I could probably do it off the
- 3:35Speaker 3: top of my head.
- 3:35Speaker 4: You've got it right in front of you.
- 3:36Speaker 2: So let's do it.
- 3:37Speaker 1: All right, let's do it. Let's go offensive line.
- 3:39Speaker 2: So, and after.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Why are you starting with the offensive line?
- 3:42Speaker 2: No, but listen.
- 3:42Speaker 1: That's where my depth chart is at.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Listen, listen. Listen to me.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Alphabetical?
- 3:46Speaker 2: Listen to me.
- 3:46Speaker 5: Drake May.
- 3:47Speaker 2: After each position group, we will pause and we will discuss.
- 3:51Speaker 3: So that's what we're doing on Catch-22 tomorrow. So I
- 3:54Speaker 3: actually structured this perfectly already.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Okay. So you start with quarterback, Mike. You don't start
- 3:59Speaker 3: with offensive line.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Drake May. Tommy DeVito.
- 4:04Speaker 4: He has to look it up.
- 4:05Speaker 2: And Baron Morton. Okay.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Baron Morton, maybe you'll, I don't want to say surprised,
- 4:09Speaker 1: but good for him.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Yeah, that was the one talking point there was they
- 4:14Speaker 3: did keep the third quarterback.
- 4:15Speaker 2: And you were surprised about that?
- 4:17Speaker 3: A little bit. I mean, like the emergency quarterback rule
- 4:19Speaker 3: came back in 2023. It's never been used. The league
- 4:23Speaker 3: had brought the rule back. No team has ever needed
- 4:26Speaker 3: to use the emergency quarterback in a game so far. So,
- 4:30Speaker 3: you know, to hold him on the roster basically for that,
- 4:33Speaker 3: I think they maybe thought that exposing him to waivers,
- 4:36Speaker 3: there might be a team that would be interested. But
- 4:39Speaker 3: I thought that was not surprising, but, you know, mild.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Mild surprise.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Good for him. I mean, I think the last game
- 4:47Speaker 1: wasn't necessarily representative of his summer. A little disappointing how
- 4:50Speaker 1: he went out and just had a dud. That was
- 4:52Speaker 1: the first time I've seen him had a dud. But overall,
- 4:55Speaker 1: I think he had a really strong summer from rookie
- 4:57Speaker 1: minicamp right through and earned more reps. That was the thing.
- 5:00Speaker 1: You just never really see the third quarterback, but he
- 5:02Speaker 1: was getting opportunities almost every time.
- 5:04Speaker 6: He was going to stick around in one capacity or another.
- 5:07Speaker 6: I'm not overly surprised that they decided to hold on
- 5:10Speaker 6: to him. I wouldn't have been surprised if they decided
- 5:12Speaker 6: to put him on the practice squad, too. And I
- 5:13Speaker 6: think that that's probably still in play.
- 5:15Speaker 10: Okay, so.
- 5:18Speaker 2: So I think quarterback, that's enough talk.
- 5:20Speaker 1: What position group do you want next?
- 5:22Speaker 3: Running back.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Running back, okay. So Ramondre Stevenson.
- 5:25Speaker 6: I give Evan a lot of crap on this show.
- 5:27Speaker 6: I can't believe he's getting crap for doing a roster, quarterback,
- 5:31Speaker 6: running back.
- 5:31Speaker 3: The correct way.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Receiver tight end.
- 5:33Speaker 2: It's an established order.
- 5:35Speaker 4: That's kind of the way it's done.
- 5:36Speaker 3: This is what we need.
- 5:37Speaker 1: So, of course, the top, Ramondre Stevenson, Travion Henderson. I'm
- 5:40Speaker 1: going to throw Reggie Gilliam in there, even though maybe
- 5:42Speaker 1: we could put him with the tight ends.
- 5:43Speaker 3: We put him with the tight ends.
- 5:44Speaker 1: But Corey Kiner is the new arrival, which of the
- 5:48Speaker 1: guys that they added, which I watched the film, too,
- 5:52Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 5:53Speaker 3: He grinded.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I liked Kiner. He was the only one that looked
- 5:55Speaker 1: like he had a little juice to me.
- 5:56Speaker 2: So this goes into the category of me of don't
- 5:59Speaker 2: listen to what they say. Look at what they do.
- 6:03Speaker 2: The signing of Kiner. What does that say?
- 6:06Speaker 1: They didn't like any of their backup running backs all
- 6:08Speaker 1: that much, or at least more than they liked him,
- 6:09Speaker 1: who they said they had an eye on going back
- 6:11Speaker 1: to last year when he was drafted. Didn't have much experience.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Looked pretty good in the preseason, but he did look
- 6:18Speaker 1: better to me. Just looks like he's got a little wiggle,
- 6:21Speaker 1: finishes runs pretty hard. But I don't really.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I see it. I wasn't overly impressed. I mean, I
- 6:27Speaker 1: thought Lane Larrison had some moments.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I thought he had a shot.
- 6:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Well, he definitely had a shot. I think he was
- 6:33Speaker 3: the 54th guy. But I feel like with Kiner, it's
- 6:36Speaker 3: kind of what Paul's been saying about the third running back.
- 6:39Speaker 3: He is a between-the-tackles traditional running back, whereas I think Larrison...
- 6:44Speaker 3: is developing in more of that sub-package, passing game kind
- 6:47Speaker 3: of role. So if you just want a third running
- 6:49Speaker 3: back that's going to return kickoffs and take some of
- 6:52Speaker 3: the beating in games, late in games and things like that,
- 6:56Speaker 3: then Kiner is more of that type of guy. He
- 6:59Speaker 3: did play down the stretch for a bad Cardinals team
- 7:02Speaker 3: last year, the last month of the season. And he showed,
- 7:05Speaker 3: like Deuce said, I thought he was a little bit more...
- 7:08Speaker 3: just dynamic as a runner than maybe some of the
- 7:11Speaker 3: guys they had in camp that were in a similar mold,
- 7:13Speaker 3: like a Hassan Haskins or something like that. A little
- 7:16Speaker 3: bit more burst, a little bit more wiggle, just a
- 7:18Speaker 3: little bit more dynamic.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Can he catch? A little bit.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Pass blocking was okay. Very limited sample size, but he
- 7:26Speaker 3: had a couple of good pass blocks in the preseason.
- 7:29Speaker 3: So I wouldn't say that's necessarily, if he's going to
- 7:32Speaker 3: catch passes, it's going to be check downs and things
- 7:34Speaker 3: like that. It's not going to be dynamic.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:38Speaker 3: But I think the biggest thing is, is that he
- 7:40Speaker 3: can kind of eat up carry. So, you know, from
- 7:42Speaker 3: a volume perspective. If they need somebody.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Were you surprised that they brought in a running back
- 7:47Speaker 2: and didn't stick with what they had? One of the
- 7:48Speaker 2: guys that they had?
- 7:49Speaker 3: No, because I didn't really think that any of the
- 7:51Speaker 3: guys that were in that early down mold had really popped.
- 7:55Speaker 3: I know Haskins had a couple of tough, dirty runs.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Right, that was him, right?
- 7:59Speaker 3: But it wasn't really anything super explosive or anything like that.
- 8:04Speaker 3: The only question I had was Larrison's role and his
- 8:07Speaker 3: skill set. Was that what they were looking for out
- 8:10Speaker 3: of the third running back? Or do they really just
- 8:12Speaker 3: want a Terrell Jennings, like a guy that can just
- 8:15Speaker 3: take some volume on if they need him?
- 8:16Speaker 2: So why are you not including Gilliam in the running
- 8:19Speaker 2: back room?
- 8:19Speaker 3: Because he practices and meets with the tight ends.
- 8:22Speaker 2: But why do you think that is? That's just the way.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Is he not going to be a traditional fullback on
- 8:28Speaker 2: this team?
- 8:29Speaker 3: Well, but the fullback always meets in practice.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Oh, does he? Yeah. Oh, okay. What do I know?
- 8:36Speaker 4: You've got to get up to speed.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Yeah, what do I know?
- 8:39Speaker 4: I was a little surprised with that move. Just, I
- 8:43Speaker 4: feel like they had.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Six of one, half dozen of the other.
- 8:46Speaker 4: You know, and I'm not, like, lamenting what they lost
- 8:49Speaker 4: to get them. You know, what's seventh? Seventh. Seventh round pick.
- 8:53Speaker 3: 2028.
- 8:54Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 8:55Speaker 6: So nothing, you know, nothing lost or anything like that.
- 8:58Speaker 6: But yeah, I just didn't necessarily see the need to
- 9:02Speaker 6: do it. And maybe they felt like, you know, being 31st,
- 9:08Speaker 6: you know, in the waiver claim that if he. ended
- 9:11Speaker 6: up getting to the open market that he wouldn't, someone
- 9:14Speaker 6: else would have claimed.
- 9:15Speaker 3: He had a big preseason. He had an extra game.
- 9:17Speaker 3: They played in the hall of fame game, but they,
- 9:18Speaker 3: he had a big preseason and just across the roster,
- 9:21Speaker 3: as we're talking about all these moves. Exposing guys to
- 9:25Speaker 3: waivers and being wary of the fact that they were
- 9:27Speaker 3: 31st in the claim drove a lot of the decisions
- 9:30Speaker 3: over the last couple of days. They protected all of
- 9:33Speaker 3: their rookies, undrafted guys that they wanted to keep. None
- 9:37Speaker 3: of those guys went on waivers. All of those guys
- 9:40Speaker 3: were on the roster already. or some way, shape, or form,
- 9:43Speaker 3: and they made these two trades ahead of the waiver
- 9:46Speaker 3: claim to get ahead of the waiver priority. So it
- 9:50Speaker 3: seemed like a lot of the decisions that were made
- 9:52Speaker 3: were based off of that, that they didn't want to
- 9:54Speaker 3: expose certain guys, young guys, to waivers.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I think in your post-game show, Troy Brown brought that up.
- 9:59Speaker 4: But those are two different things.
- 10:01Speaker 6: I agree wholeheartedly with Evan's point about you got to
- 10:05Speaker 6: figure out what you want because you can't guarantee.
- 10:08Speaker 4: When you're four last.
- 10:10Speaker 6: Year, and Troy did say this in the post-game show,
- 10:13Speaker 6: You get a pretty good shot of getting some guys
- 10:15Speaker 6: in waivers. 31 is a crapshoot. But I don't necessarily...
- 10:19Speaker 6: It doesn't mean.
- 10:20Speaker 4: If you cut a guy that you're more or less
- 10:22Speaker 4: likely to lose him. Like, everybody has access to the...
- 10:26Speaker 4: As Bill Belichick always said, anytime you release a player...
- 10:30Speaker 4: you have to be prepared to lose that player. And
- 10:32Speaker 4: whether you're 31st in the waiver or 4th in the
- 10:35Speaker 4: waiver doesn't increase your chances of losing Channing Canada.
- 10:38Speaker 3: No, that was not the point I was making. The
- 10:41Speaker 3: point I was making was like, Kendall Vildor gets cut
- 10:44Speaker 3: and Channing Canada stays. Kendall Vildor is a vested veteran
- 10:47Speaker 3: that becomes a free agent and doesn't go on waivers. So, like,
- 10:50Speaker 3: he's a guy that they had opportunity to then sign
- 10:53Speaker 3: immediately to the practice squad. Whereas if you put Channing
- 10:56Speaker 3: Canada on waivers, you expose.
- 10:59Speaker 10: Him to everybody.
- 10:59Speaker 4: That's a good explanation of that. Yeah, that definitely changes.
- 11:02Speaker 3: So across the whole roster, I would say that that
- 11:05Speaker 3: was kind of the case, that they cut guys that
- 11:08Speaker 3: were vested veterans and kept the guys off of waivers.
- 11:11Speaker 5: Gotcha.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:13Speaker 1: So moving along, we'll stick with tight ends since we
- 11:15Speaker 1: already talked about Gilliam. Hunter Henry, of course. Cameron Latu,
- 11:18Speaker 1: they traded for from Philadelphia. And then the two rookies,
- 11:21Speaker 1: Eli Raritan and Tanner Arkin.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Arkin makes it. What do we know about this Latu guy?
- 11:27Speaker 1: Played some special teams.
- 11:29Speaker 3: He was more of like an H-back, which I find
- 11:31Speaker 3: interesting in Philly. He's 6'4, 240, so he's not built
- 11:37Speaker 3: like a traditional in-line tight end. I thought that was interesting.
- 11:42Speaker 3: We talked a little bit about Arkin may be struggling
- 11:45Speaker 3: a little in the preseason trying to develop as a
- 11:48Speaker 3: fullback and be insurance to Reggie Gilliam. So I wonder
- 11:51Speaker 3: if they see Latu being someone like that more than
- 11:55Speaker 3: he's going to put his hand in the dirt next
- 11:57Speaker 3: to the tackle. He was playing a lot off the
- 11:59Speaker 3: line of scrimmage in the backfield for Philadelphia and then
- 12:02Speaker 3: obviously on special teams, too. So he's never caught a pass,
- 12:05Speaker 3: never been targeted in an NFL game in three years.
- 12:08Speaker 3: So I think that he's more of a blocker, special teams.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Type of guy that they were looking for.
- 12:15Speaker 3: In my opinion, this is like Julian Hill, the best
- 12:17Speaker 3: they could do to replace Julian Hill. When you look
- 12:19Speaker 3: at their roster, you know, Arkin and Eli Raritan are rookies.
- 12:22Speaker 3: They're young players behind Hunter Henry. Latu hasn't played a
- 12:26Speaker 3: ton because he was hurt and stuff like that, but
- 12:29Speaker 3: this is going to be his fourth year in the league.
- 12:31Speaker 3: So he's at least been around the NFL and been
- 12:33Speaker 3: in the NFL. So it's not quite as good of
- 12:36Speaker 3: a player as Julian Hill, but just somebody that has
- 12:38Speaker 3: some experience compared to the rookies.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I just wonder how much of these moves are
- 12:42Speaker 1: directed towards special teams because there's a really big special
- 12:45Speaker 1: teams turnover going on this year. And, you know, it
- 12:47Speaker 1: was even exacerbated without, you know, Chad Mooma didn't make it.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Jack Westover didn't make it. These were guys, you know,
- 12:53Speaker 1: along with the old Belichick defensive guys like Tavai and
- 12:56Speaker 1: Jennings that played a lot of special teams this year
- 12:58Speaker 1: or last year. So, you know, and not even that,
- 13:00Speaker 1: but also the punter, Wisnowski, that they've added to the
- 13:03Speaker 1: practice squad. Schooler's not going to be there. I mean,
- 13:06Speaker 1: you're so used to looking out there and being like, well,
- 13:07Speaker 1: you got Matthew Slater, you got Brendan Schooler, you've got
- 13:09Speaker 1: some experience out there. I think there's going to be
- 13:11Speaker 1: some major turnover on special teams this year. And it's
- 13:14Speaker 1: a lot to ask rookies to go out there in
- 13:16Speaker 1: Seattle and go make plays on special teams. So it's
- 13:19Speaker 1: just one of those things you don't usually, it's not
- 13:21Speaker 1: at the forefront of your mind, but I think a
- 13:23Speaker 1: move like this probably corresponds heavily with getting somebody out
- 13:26Speaker 1: there who's played special teams.
- 13:27Speaker 2: In the NFL. All right, moving on to the wide receivers.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Wide receivers, A.J. Brown, Romeo Dobbs top the list, then
- 13:34Speaker 1: followed by Matt Collins, Demario Douglas, Kyle Williams, and Efton
- 13:38Speaker 1: Chisholm III. Best position group on the roster. A lot
- 13:45Speaker 1: to like.
- 13:45Speaker 2: He's definitively saying.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Starting quarterback aside, best position group on the roster. Probably
- 13:53Speaker 3: the deepest wide receiver room since 2017, maybe. And even then,
- 13:57Speaker 3: Julian Edelman gets hurt in the preseason. So, I mean,
- 14:01Speaker 3: they're stacked. They're stacked at receiver. They've got top dogs,
- 14:06Speaker 3: middle dogs, slot receivers, backup slot receivers.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Developmental young guy.
- 14:11Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Working a little bit.
- 14:13Speaker 2: It's a good group. Okay.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Offensive line, Will Campbell, Demetrius Crownover, Morgan Moses, Caleb Lomu
- 14:20Speaker 1: are your tackles. As of right now, Elijah Vera-Tucker, Greg
- 14:24Speaker 1: Van Roten, Jared Wilson, Michael Onwenu, and Walter Rouse are
- 14:28Speaker 1: our interior players. And Ben Brown was at least last night.
- 14:31Speaker 2: That was my question is, are you surprised at releasing
- 14:35Speaker 2: Ben Brown.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Another one I think is procedural. I think Mike Reese
- 14:38Speaker 3: reported that, hinting at that as well. So another roster manipulation,
- 14:45Speaker 3: vested veteran, IR deadlines, things like that. The waivers were
- 14:50Speaker 3: 1 o'clock Eastern yesterday. In order to get Jacobs and
- 14:53Speaker 3: Behringer on IR return, they had to do it after
- 14:57Speaker 3: 4 o'clock. So there was like a three-hour window where
- 15:01Speaker 3: they needed to put the waiver claims in, but they
- 15:03Speaker 3: couldn't put those guys on injured reserve yet. So KJ Britt,
- 15:06Speaker 3: I think Reese said, is back on the practice squad already.
- 15:09Speaker 3: I think the plan is to have Ben Brown back
- 15:11Speaker 3: in some capacity as well. So this was another roster
- 15:14Speaker 3: gymnastics situation. I think Ben Brown's going to be here.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Is Van Roten ahead of him on the depth chart?
- 15:20Speaker 3: Maybe at guard. I think he's probably a better guard
- 15:23Speaker 3: than Ben Brown is. I haven't really seen Van Roten
- 15:27Speaker 3: play center very often, so I would say probably not
- 15:31Speaker 3: at center, but I would think at both guard spots, yeah.
- 15:34Speaker 2: How do we feel about the depth of the offensive line?
- 15:38Speaker 1: I mean, a little better than I would say I
- 15:40Speaker 1: felt this summer, just with GVR, as we call him,
- 15:43Speaker 1: and Rouse, who's got some experience. Some guys who have
- 15:46Speaker 1: played in the NFL. Otherwise, you were looking at Makai Butler,
- 15:49Speaker 1: who was a practice squad player, so Maybe a little
- 15:52Speaker 1: bit better. Anytime you're going down to those guys, I
- 15:54Speaker 1: think you're going to be a little bit in trouble,
- 15:56Speaker 1: but at least there's some experience there now.
- 15:59Speaker 12: Okay.
- 15:59Speaker 3: I feel pretty good about it. Now, Marcus Bryant, feel
- 16:02Speaker 3: free to participate if you like.
- 16:04Speaker 4: If I have something that I feel like To inject,
- 16:07Speaker 4: to add to the conversation, I will.
- 16:09Speaker 3: We're talking a lot of back of the roster guys
- 16:11Speaker 3: right now for Pauly.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Back up off of us.
- 16:13Speaker 4: I think I'm with the listeners, but that's just me.
- 16:15Speaker 3: But I feel pretty good about what they are on
- 16:18Speaker 3: the offensive line. I think really the questions I have
- 16:20Speaker 3: on the offensive line is the ceiling of the starting five,
- 16:23Speaker 3: not necessarily the backups and the depth and things like that.
- 16:27Speaker 3: It just remains to be seen how good Will Campbell
- 16:29Speaker 3: is going to be at left tackle and Wilson at
- 16:31Speaker 3: center and Vera Tucker and.
- 16:32Speaker 2: The whole group.
- 16:33Speaker 3: But JVR is a really good backup, especially at guard.
- 16:38Speaker 3: He started every game for three straight years over the
- 16:40Speaker 3: last couple of years and, you know, has been a starter.
- 16:43Speaker 3: a pretty consistent one, so I feel pretty good there.
- 16:46Speaker 3: I wish Marcus Bryant didn't get hurt. Like, that hurts
- 16:48Speaker 3: your tackle depth a little bit. But overall, I mean,
- 16:52Speaker 3: you drafted Lomu in the first round. So if he's
- 16:54Speaker 3: got to play at some point this year, you would
- 16:56Speaker 3: like to think that he's going to be up for it.
- 16:58Speaker 2: All right, moving on to the other side of the ball.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Yeah, let's defensive tackle. Is that all right?
- 17:02Speaker 3: There you go. Stick on the trenches.
- 17:05Speaker 1: So Milton Williams, Christian Barmore lead the way, Corey Durden,
- 17:08Speaker 1: the other starter, and then Josh Farmer and Lenny T.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Leonard Taylor, the third. round out your five guys in
- 17:13Speaker 1: the middle. Would say that I'd love to see more
- 17:17Speaker 1: out of Farmer and Taylor. You know, Durden, I thought,
- 17:20Speaker 1: had a good camp. He was injured at the end. But,
- 17:22Speaker 1: you know, that's the thing, the depth. You feel great
- 17:24Speaker 1: about Barmore and Williams up top. They're going to do
- 17:26Speaker 1: what you need. But, you know, I didn't see a
- 17:29Speaker 1: consistent big step forward from Lenny T or Josh Farmer
- 17:34Speaker 1: this summer. And I think those guys are going to
- 17:35Speaker 1: have to play some snaps. And they can't be liabilities
- 17:38Speaker 1: against the run. That's, you know, biggest concern is just
- 17:40Speaker 1: go in there, You don't have to get 10 sacks,
- 17:43Speaker 1: but you've got to make sure you're not getting gashed.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Is Durden your big man?
- 17:46Speaker 3: Yeah, Durden's your nose tackle right now. And I think
- 17:48Speaker 3: that they internally replaced Tonga with Durden. The question is,
- 17:52Speaker 3: did they replace Durden? Because that's the trickle-down effect of that,
- 17:57Speaker 3: of replacing those guys internally. And Joshua Farmer's supposed to
- 18:01Speaker 3: be the guy that's going to be the backup to
- 18:03Speaker 3: the nose tackle that Durden has now become. They miss Tonga. Like,
- 18:07Speaker 3: I don't know if it's going to matter in season.
- 18:09Speaker 3: We'll see. But just looking at the roster on paper,
- 18:12Speaker 3: they don't really have, like, a 335-pound nose tackle that's
- 18:16Speaker 3: just going to clog rushing lanes in the middle. That's
- 18:19Speaker 3: a player, a body type, that they don't necessarily have
- 18:22Speaker 3: right now.
- 18:23Speaker 5: Yep.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Okay, moving outside to the edge.
- 18:25Speaker 1: And now to the edge is an interesting group. Draymond
- 18:27Speaker 1: Jones leads the way, and then Elijah Ponder and the
- 18:30Speaker 1: two rookies, Gay Bacchus and Quintavious Hutchins.
- 18:33Speaker 5: Okay.
- 18:34Speaker 3: The biggest... I want to say worst, but the biggest
- 18:39Speaker 3: question mark on the roster, if receiver is the best
- 18:42Speaker 3: position group, I think this is on the other side
- 18:44Speaker 3: of the spectrum, top of the depth chart. Like, I
- 18:47Speaker 3: think that's, you know, everybody's still looking for them to
- 18:49Speaker 3: claim edge rushers. Like they have guys that, you know,
- 18:53Speaker 3: are of that caliber. It's the, you know, they don't
- 18:55Speaker 3: have a number one guy. You know, they don't have a,
- 18:58Speaker 3: a guy, you know, if Draymond Jones was, you know,
- 19:01Speaker 3: a secondary rusher to, you know, a stud edge rusher,
- 19:04Speaker 3: then you'd feel a little bit better. But right now
- 19:07Speaker 3: that he's your number one edge rusher. Uh, he has
- 19:09Speaker 3: a lot like wide receiver in that respect. So that, that,
- 19:12Speaker 3: that position group is, I think it could really make
- 19:14Speaker 3: or break their season, whether or not they can get
- 19:16Speaker 3: enough pressure out of that group.
- 19:18Speaker 12: Okay.
- 19:18Speaker 1: The only position group I, like you said, I questioned
- 19:20Speaker 1: the top, the rest of it, you can talk about
- 19:21Speaker 1: depth and you can say, well, if Hunter Henry goes out,
- 19:23Speaker 1: you're in trouble or this guy goes out, you're in trouble.
- 19:26Speaker 1: This one, you might be in trouble from the jump.
- 19:28Speaker 1: So We'll see how Elijah Ponder looks in year two
- 19:30Speaker 1: and if he's able to play early downs and be
- 19:33Speaker 1: an effective.
- 19:34Speaker 2: So back in the day, edge wasn't really a position.
- 19:37Speaker 2: You were either an outside linebacker or a defensive end.
- 19:40Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 19:40Speaker 3: I would say in this system, it's a little bit
- 19:42Speaker 3: of both because they're you know in their nickel fronts
- 19:46Speaker 3: they play four down so they're really more defensive ends
- 19:49Speaker 3: there are base three four defense and base defense so
- 19:51Speaker 3: those guys are outside linebackers so it's kind of like
- 19:54Speaker 3: you have to do a little bit of both of
- 19:55Speaker 3: standing up and hand in the dirt I mean ponder
- 19:58Speaker 3: is really in access or the x factors like if
- 20:01Speaker 3: either one of those guys if access can figure it
- 20:03Speaker 3: out at this level and if ponder can break out
- 20:05Speaker 3: in year two you feel a little bit better so so.
- 20:08Speaker 6: It really is the same thing I think people traditionally
- 20:13Speaker 6: call it edge now, but William McGinnis played 4-3 end
- 20:17Speaker 6: with his hand in the dirt, and he played stand-up
- 20:20Speaker 6: outside linebacker.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Yeah, but we call him an outside linebacker.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Well, it depends on what the system was. They just
- 20:26Speaker 4: call them edges now.
- 20:27Speaker 3: The Patriots call them outside linebackers too, because Mike Smith
- 20:30Speaker 3: is the outside linebacker's coach. It depends on the system.
- 20:33Speaker 3: If you're a 3-4 defense, a 4-3 defense, you might
- 20:35Speaker 3: call them different things.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Well, I think When you're thinking about, oh, where's the
- 20:40Speaker 2: pressure going to come from, you have to include the
- 20:43Speaker 2: outside linebackers.
- 20:44Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 20:45Speaker 3: But those are the outside linebackers.
- 20:46Speaker 4: Those are the edge guys. Those are who we're talking about.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Well, we haven't mentioned, like, Landry or anything. I know
- 20:50Speaker 2: he's on a list.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Well, he would have been mentioned here, but he's just
- 20:53Speaker 3: on a list.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Okay, you would have mentioned him here.
- 20:55Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Okay.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, him coming back and being healthy and
- 20:59Speaker 3: being Harold Landry would also be... you know, would move
- 21:02Speaker 3: the needle. But right now that group is for a
- 21:05Speaker 3: team that you want to contend for a Superbowl. That
- 21:08Speaker 3: that's the one spot.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Okay.
- 21:09Speaker 5: Yep.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Moving inside, moving inside linebackers, Robert Splane, Christian Ellis leading
- 21:13Speaker 1: the way, Nnamdi Obieizor, the rookie behind them. And then
- 21:18Speaker 1: the trade, or sorry, the waivers claim that they made
- 21:22Speaker 1: from the Giants is Darius Mouassou, who's played a little
- 21:25Speaker 1: bit as well. And another guy who's played some special
- 21:28Speaker 1: teams a little bit. So I, you know, it's, Another
- 21:31Speaker 1: spot we've talked a lot about, middle linebacker depth. And,
- 21:33Speaker 1: you know, they do have KJ Britt back on the
- 21:35Speaker 1: practice squad. So, you know, I think they're just trying
- 21:38Speaker 1: to build that depth that they've talked about not having
- 21:41Speaker 1: in any way they can do it right now.
- 21:43Speaker 2: He flashed a few times in preseason.
- 21:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 21:46Speaker 3: He had a good, nice, strong end of training camp,
- 21:49Speaker 3: I would say. It started a little slow.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Upward trajectory, you know.
- 21:51Speaker 3: It was like Khalil Jacobs went like this and then,
- 21:54Speaker 3: you know, kind of tailed off and the OB eyes
- 21:56Speaker 3: or did the opposite. So, you know, we'll see. I
- 21:59Speaker 3: think they, it's a good sign to me that they
- 22:01Speaker 3: put both those guys on the roster. It seems like
- 22:03Speaker 3: they want to keep working with them and developing them.
- 22:06Speaker 3: But I do said another spot that, you know, we
- 22:09Speaker 3: talked about Tonga defensive tackle, like who's Jack Gibbons. on
- 22:12Speaker 3: this team right now? Like, do they have Jack Gibbons?
- 22:14Speaker 3: You know, those were some of the signings they made
- 22:17Speaker 3: last off season that those guys had big roles.
- 22:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:21Speaker 6: I just was looking at, I wish I brought my sheets. Um,
- 22:24Speaker 6: but last year they signed, I want to say eight
- 22:28Speaker 6: players to one or two year deals. And six of
- 22:32Speaker 6: those eight players ended up making the team this year.
- 22:36Speaker 6: I think the number was six, one year contract kind
- 22:40Speaker 6: of guys in, They didn't make the team for the
- 22:43Speaker 6: most part. Those kinds of guys. I think Bayard is
- 22:45Speaker 6: the only one on a one-year deal that made it.
- 22:48Speaker 6: It was KJ Britt and those guys. Mike Brown, Kendall Vildor.
- 22:53Speaker 4: Correct. James Hudson.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Last year it was Tonga, Hawkins, Chason, Gibbons. Epps didn't
- 23:00Speaker 1: work out.
- 23:01Speaker 6: Epps and Wes Schweitzer were the two that didn't make
- 23:04Speaker 6: the team last year.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Even Austin Hooper was a one-year deal.
- 23:08Speaker 4: And all the rest of those guys.
- 23:10Speaker 6: did make the team, and I wasn't even counting Austin
- 23:13Speaker 6: Hooper because he was retained.
- 23:14Speaker 4: He was re-signed.
- 23:16Speaker 3: Or Jalen Hawkins, who was a similar boat.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Again, in this year, those are the guys.
- 23:21Speaker 6: Mike Brown, Kendall Vildor, KJ Britt, veteran-type guys that you
- 23:26Speaker 6: bring in on a one-year deal, see if they can
- 23:28Speaker 6: provide some depth for you, and at least at this stage,
- 23:31Speaker 6: none of them really are.
- 23:32Speaker 2: All right, over to the secondary.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Yeah, cornerbacks, so Gonzo, hopefully. Carl Davis, Charles Woods, K-Ron Prunty,
- 23:39Speaker 1: and Channing Canada, another UDFA with Paul. Paul was all
- 23:42Speaker 1: over Channing Canada earlier. You were the first one.
- 23:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I'm not going to lie.
- 23:46Speaker 6: I wavered a little bit in the middle, but he
- 23:49Speaker 6: did catch my eye on that indoor practice that they
- 23:51Speaker 6: had that day.
- 23:52Speaker 2: You're not including Marcus Jones as a quarterback? Oh, sorry,
- 23:54Speaker 2: Marcus Jones.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I got him on the slot over.
- 23:55Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 23:56Speaker 1: He's a different nickelback.
- 23:58Speaker 6: If you just did a depth chart the way everybody
- 24:00Speaker 6: else does, Mike, you'd know where all the players fit.
- 24:04Speaker 1: It's a visual thing.
- 24:05Speaker 4: This is an exhausting exercise.
- 24:08Speaker 2: So, after Jones... Those top three.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Cornerbacks are excellent.
- 24:16Speaker 1: We'll see. I mean, I thought Charles Woods was okay
- 24:18Speaker 1: last year. I thought Charles Woods was a little bit
- 24:20Speaker 1: of an adventure this preseason.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Sure was.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Especially down the end. And it got to the point
- 24:24Speaker 1: in the postgame show where you're saying, feels like Vildor's
- 24:27Speaker 1: that guy now. Now, Vildor still is in the mix.
- 24:29Speaker 1: He's back on the practice squad, but... It seems like– see,
- 24:32Speaker 1: the other thing, too, I thought with Charles Woods was
- 24:35Speaker 1: I think he's the top slot backup, but he's also
- 24:37Speaker 1: probably most going to play inside or outside. So I
- 24:41Speaker 1: think they might have been playing a little bit more
- 24:43Speaker 1: slot in the preseason and he was getting a little
- 24:45Speaker 1: more exposed, whereas if he has to fill in for
- 24:47Speaker 1: Carlton Davis on the outside, I might feel slightly better.
- 24:51Speaker 3: Yeah, that's how I looked at it, too. And I
- 24:53Speaker 3: would also say, like, he played well in regular season games–
- 24:57Speaker 3: Last year. So these training camp practices, as much as
- 25:01Speaker 3: we get excited about it, I feel like there might
- 25:04Speaker 3: be trusting the actual tape over what he did in
- 25:07Speaker 3: practice this summer.
- 25:09Speaker 4: But he struggled.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Especially after whatever injury he had, I think it might
- 25:12Speaker 3: have been a concussion, and he came back from that.
- 25:14Speaker 3: And then in Cleveland, he really struggled. But your point
- 25:17Speaker 3: about him playing a lot more in the slot is
- 25:20Speaker 3: a good one.
- 25:21Speaker 4: It's a good one.
- 25:22Speaker 6: It is a fair point. And Fred, beyond those three...
- 25:26Speaker 6: What you watched in Cleveland... Cleveland was really bad.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Yeah, that wasn't good.
- 25:31Speaker 4: That defensive performance was really bad.
- 25:33Speaker 2: The communication was terrible.
- 25:34Speaker 6: And the guys that were out there, for the most part,
- 25:37Speaker 6: you know, it's guys that we're talking about that might
- 25:40Speaker 6: have to play if you lose.
- 25:42Speaker 5: Any of the.
- 25:42Speaker 4: You know, it's Prunty, it's Woods, it's Vildor, who I
- 25:46Speaker 4: know on the practice squad. Now, those guys... They're all
- 25:48Speaker 4: still here. You might need some of those guys.
- 25:51Speaker 5: It's true.
- 25:52Speaker 2: The only saving grace is they were all out there
- 25:54Speaker 2: at the same time.
- 25:55Speaker 12: Right.
- 25:55Speaker 5: Yeah. Yes.
- 25:56Speaker 2: If you're picking shoes... Maybe their warts aren't as visible.
- 26:01Speaker 4: You can maybe hide a guy.
- 26:03Speaker 3: That's often missed when we talked about these depth issues
- 26:07Speaker 3: in the preseason games. If Charles Woods has to play,
- 26:10Speaker 3: he's going to play with Christian Gonzalez and Kevin Byard
- 26:13Speaker 3: and Craig Woodson, and he's not going to be playing
- 26:16Speaker 3: with the backups around him.
- 26:18Speaker 2: He's the guy that's going to get help.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Hopefully. Let's wrap it up with the safeties. Kevin Byard,
- 26:24Speaker 1: Jalen Reed, Craig Woodson, Del Pettis.
- 26:28Speaker 3: And no John Saunders. So they obviously didn't buy as
- 26:32Speaker 3: much on the interceptions in practice. Not on the practice
- 26:36Speaker 3: squad as of right now either. So I guess we'll
- 26:38Speaker 3: see this afternoon if they signed him late.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Okay, so there's your safeties. And then special teams. I
- 26:45Speaker 2: was a little surprised that they got rid of Matt
- 26:48Speaker 2: Hack and brought in a guy. I thought they'd just
- 26:51Speaker 2: stick with Hack. But I guess... I'm with you.
- 26:57Speaker 3: I mean, he had a great game in Cleveland. It
- 26:59Speaker 3: was one of the low and bright spots was the
- 27:01Speaker 3: punter having three I-20s in Cleveland.
- 27:05Speaker 4: Mike had him on the good list.
- 27:07Speaker 3: He was on the good list. Good job.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Thank you. Do you want me to run down what
- 27:11Speaker 1: we know about the practice squad so far, Fred? Sure.
- 27:14Speaker 6: So we should probably just say Barringer was placed on IR,
- 27:17Speaker 6: so it's probably going to be Mitch Wisnowski punting in
- 27:21Speaker 6: the first, you know, I'm just going to say the
- 27:23Speaker 6: first game. No, I'll say the first game, because I
- 27:25Speaker 6: don't know what's going to happen beyond that.
- 27:27Speaker 1: Oh, then someone else.
- 27:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, they could bring Matt Hawk back.
- 27:32Speaker 2: The only thing that.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Confused me about the whole thing was they had two
- 27:37Speaker 3: IR return spots on cut-down day. Marcus Bryant took one,
- 27:40Speaker 3: and they left one vacant. They didn't use the second one.
- 27:44Speaker 3: Then the next day, they put Beringer and Khalil Jacobs
- 27:47Speaker 3: on IR. So couldn't they have just designated one of
- 27:51Speaker 3: those guys to return along with Marcus Bryan on cut
- 27:54Speaker 3: down day and then not put an extra guy on
- 27:57Speaker 3: waivers or cut an extra guy? Like maybe I'm missing
- 28:01Speaker 3: something with that.
- 28:03Speaker 4: So, yeah, I mean, I don't know. That sounds right.
- 28:07Speaker 4: What Evan just said, but I'd have to check with
- 28:09Speaker 4: my sources.
- 28:10Speaker 3: That was the only roster gymnastics thing that I was
- 28:14Speaker 3: a little confused by because I I think all the
- 28:16Speaker 3: reporting is that Land Larrison was the 54th guy. He
- 28:19Speaker 3: got cut, like Mark Daniels said, 15 minutes before the
- 28:23Speaker 3: deadline that they cut him. So he's the 54th guy
- 28:27Speaker 3: because they traded for these guys and were going to
- 28:31Speaker 3: claim guys. So if they had put Beringer or Khalil
- 28:35Speaker 3: Jacobs on IR return with Marcus Bryant, then they would
- 28:39Speaker 3: have had a spot for Land Larrison and they wouldn't
- 28:42Speaker 3: have had to... Now they end up losing Land Larrison,
- 28:44Speaker 3: so it's not... it's not a huge deal, but I
- 28:48Speaker 3: just wonder why they, those guys weren't put on IR.
- 28:52Speaker 3: One of those guys wasn't put on IR the day
- 28:53Speaker 3: before to save them the roster spot.
- 28:56Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 28:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:57Speaker 6: That's the one thing about the, you know, then it's
- 28:59Speaker 6: not that new anymore. The newish IR rules, you know,
- 29:02Speaker 6: designating guys to return. You don't always know like, cause
- 29:09Speaker 6: these rules tend to be fluid.
- 29:11Speaker 4: And it used to.
- 29:11Speaker 6: Be that if you couldn't do it at all before, uh,
- 29:15Speaker 6: You had to be on the 53-man roster to start
- 29:17Speaker 6: the season.
- 29:17Speaker 4: They've adjusted that. I think Evan's got it right. You're
- 29:20Speaker 4: now allowed two.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:22Speaker 6: When you initially cut down to 53, I think Evan
- 29:25Speaker 6: has that right, but I'm not positive.
- 29:27Speaker 2: I do.
- 29:27Speaker 6: And then the next day, again, now you can start
- 29:31Speaker 6: working on your whatever many that you have to designate
- 29:34Speaker 6: you know, during the course of the year. So that's already, what,
- 29:38Speaker 6: three now they've used?
- 29:39Speaker 3: Well, so you don't designate them to return. anymore in
- 29:44Speaker 3: season IR you just have the option to so you're
- 29:47Speaker 3: not burning it yet you don't burn it until you
- 29:49Speaker 3: actually designate the guy to return so.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Say ahead of time yeah he's gonna return now we'll
- 29:55Speaker 1: wait and see.
- 29:55Speaker 3: So Marcus Bryant took up one of the IR return
- 29:58Speaker 3: spots that you have to designate But Behringer and Khalil Jacobs,
- 30:02Speaker 3: you don't. So those guys go on IR. When they
- 30:05Speaker 3: return to practice in the month, then you've designated them.
- 30:07Speaker 3: Then you've burned the designated to return.
- 30:09Speaker 6: And it sounds like you did a little research. I'm
- 30:11Speaker 6: going to lean on you. Do they still have the
- 30:13Speaker 6: limit of eight?
- 30:14Speaker 5: Yes.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Okay.
- 30:15Speaker 4: But you don't have to designate them when you put
- 30:17Speaker 4: them on IR.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 30:18Speaker 4: So there might be a little bit more flexibility there.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Because you don't know.
- 30:20Speaker 12: Right.
- 30:20Speaker 5: Right.
- 30:25Speaker 3: A little bit more flexibility would be, like, the one
- 30:28Speaker 3: reason I could think of.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Okay, so let's run down the practice squad. Is it full?
- 30:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it is not full yet. There's one guy, I believe,
- 30:36Speaker 1: who's reported that hasn't been officially signed. I'll save him
- 30:39Speaker 1: for the end. But Jacob Rizzi's back, who was a center.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Lorenz Metz, the offensive tackle from Germany. I know, Fred.
- 30:45Speaker 2: That's good.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Did you have to flex your weight on that one?
- 30:49Speaker 1: Kyle Dixon, Cameron Dorner, two receivers, Lane Larrison, Hassan Haskins,
- 30:52Speaker 1: the two running backs. And then on the defensive, Jeremiah Farms,
- 30:56Speaker 1: Eric Gregory, Riley Wilson, KJ Britt, Kendall Vildor, Mike Brown,
- 31:01Speaker 1: and Mitch Wyschnowski, the punter. The one that's been reported
- 31:04Speaker 1: that hasn't been official yet is Jake Kubis, who was
- 31:08Speaker 1: on the Giants, and he's another guy who's played some
- 31:11Speaker 1: interior line.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Is there any wide receiver in the practice squad? Yeah,
- 31:14Speaker 2: Dixon and Dorner.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Oh, Dixon.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Dixon and Dorner. 88 and 83 that were there.
- 31:17Speaker 10: Okay.
- 31:18Speaker 1: This year, I thought both those guys, yeah, you know,
- 31:21Speaker 1: I mean, we were way more focused on the top
- 31:23Speaker 1: of the depth chart guys, but.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Palmer didn't make it. DeGennaro didn't make it.
- 31:28Speaker 8: Not yet.
- 31:29Speaker 3: They still have some open spots. I think they're at
- 31:33Speaker 3: 15 of 17 or 14 of 17 right now.
- 31:35Speaker 6: Someone reported yesterday a handful of guys that were told
- 31:38Speaker 6: that they were not coming back to the practice squad,
- 31:40Speaker 6: but that could change.
- 31:41Speaker 4: Again, like, you know, they might have earmarked.
- 31:43Speaker 6: You know, for their 17 guys, because Ments would be
- 31:46Speaker 6: one of those international players that doesn't count.
- 31:48Speaker 4: So you could have one extra.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:51Speaker 6: And maybe they don't get all those guys. You know,
- 31:53Speaker 6: maybe they have some veterans like Vildor and Britt. You know,
- 31:56Speaker 6: maybe they have some other guys like that that they have.
- 31:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:59Speaker 6: And then it doesn't work out. So maybe a guy
- 32:01Speaker 6: like DiGennaro or someone else comes back.
- 32:03Speaker 2: So there's your roster as it stands today. And there'll
- 32:07Speaker 2: be changes.
- 32:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 32:09Speaker 2: You know, there'll be a few changes.
- 32:10Speaker 1: Probably get out there today. There'll be.
- 32:12Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah.
- 32:13Speaker 3: It's always the best is when you just see like
- 32:15Speaker 3: the numbers and you're like, who can we tell whose
- 32:17Speaker 3: face this is and all that kind of stuff.
- 32:19Speaker 4: So I did absolutely no research on this, Fred. But
- 32:23Speaker 4: I think we saw something that I've never seen before yesterday.
- 32:25Speaker 2: What's that?
- 32:26Speaker 6: Miami claims seven guys on waivers. And I don't think
- 32:30Speaker 6: I've ever seen that many guys get claims. It just
- 32:32Speaker 6: shows you how.
- 32:33Speaker 4: You know, what a state of flux that is in
- 32:36Speaker 4: right now.
- 32:37Speaker 3: The waiver order is interesting because it's not, if you have,
- 32:41Speaker 3: your priority is the same every round. So, like, if
- 32:44Speaker 3: you pick somebody, it's not like you go.
- 32:46Speaker 2: To the bottom.
- 32:46Speaker 4: Yeah, it's not like fantasy football, which is snake draft.
- 32:49Speaker 5: Right.
- 32:49Speaker 3: So, like, if you have the number one claim, like
- 32:52Speaker 3: the Raiders had the number one claim, they could claim
- 32:54Speaker 3: seven guys and they would get all seven of them.
- 32:56Speaker 3: So Miami was up near the top two. So when
- 32:58Speaker 3: they claimed all their guys, they got them all.
- 33:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 33:02Speaker 6: Yeah, I think there was a report that the Patriots
- 33:06Speaker 6: only claimed two guys. They got the two that they
- 33:09Speaker 6: put claims on.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Okay. All right. So then the other news yesterday, I
- 33:13Speaker 2: think it's news. Gonzalez's trainer, Coach Flight, was on your show,
- 33:21Speaker 2: one of your shows yesterday.
- 33:22Speaker 4: I heard it.
- 33:23Speaker 2: The Felger and the Mavs.
- 33:23Speaker 4: It was highly entertaining.
- 33:25Speaker 2: And, I mean, if you take him at face value...
- 33:29Speaker 2: I came out of it with a positive vibe because
- 33:32Speaker 2: he said that from what he knows, they're working hard
- 33:36Speaker 2: at it. There's just some language that needs to be fixed,
- 33:40Speaker 2: but they're a lot better off than they were a
- 33:43Speaker 2: week ago. So I took that as a positive.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I hope so. The clock's a-ticking right now.
- 33:51Speaker 7: It is.
- 33:51Speaker 3: This seems like the sweet spot, though, now that it's
- 33:54Speaker 3: lingered this long, like right before... next Wednesday night? You know,
- 33:59Speaker 3: is this, can they get this done across the finish line?
- 34:01Speaker 2: We want to get it done before the weekend.
- 34:02Speaker 4: Sounds like it's trending that way.
- 34:04Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 34:04Speaker 6: So I think Daniel Jeremiah had something yesterday who is
- 34:08Speaker 6: not like, he's more of a scout type to me,
- 34:10Speaker 6: a draft guy than a, like a flat reporter. But
- 34:14Speaker 6: he seemed to think that this is close. And then
- 34:16Speaker 6: his agent comes on. And I'm with you, Fred.
- 34:19Speaker 2: That wasn't his agent.
- 34:20Speaker 4: I mean, I'm sorry. His trainer. Thank you. I'm glad
- 34:23Speaker 4: that you corrected that in all seriousness. That's a huge difference.
- 34:26Speaker 2: Huge.
- 34:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:27Speaker 6: But I don't think that the trainer goes on to
- 34:30Speaker 6: talk about Gonzalez without Christian at least being aware of
- 34:34Speaker 6: it or giving him the okay. So I think it
- 34:38Speaker 6: is a good sign.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Unless we hear it. Christian Gonzalez fired his trainer today.
- 34:42Speaker 5: Could be.
- 34:42Speaker 4: And he's a guy who trains Craig Woodson, too.
- 34:45Speaker 2: And Witherspoon.
- 34:47Speaker 4: Yeah, Witherspoon, but a couple of the Patriots that are
- 34:49Speaker 4: no longer here.
- 34:50Speaker 6: But I think it would be a pretty bad career
- 34:53Speaker 6: move for Coach Flight.
- 34:56Speaker 4: I think his real name is Christian White. But he
- 35:00Speaker 4: was interesting to listen to.
- 35:02Speaker 6: Sort of gave us some of the trials and tribulations
- 35:05Speaker 6: along the way, anecdotally. I think we were all kind
- 35:08Speaker 6: of pretty much around the truth every step of the way,
- 35:12Speaker 6: he seems to think it's going to get done soon.
- 35:15Speaker 6: He'd be surprised if it's not done before the Seattle opener.
- 35:19Speaker 4: Hopefully he's right.
- 35:19Speaker 2: That would be great. Good way to open the season
- 35:22Speaker 2: with a little announcement like that.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Good vibes. I mean, you don't want to go into
- 35:26Speaker 1: that however many hours of pregame they're going to be
- 35:29Speaker 1: doing that night for the NFL opener and talking about
- 35:33Speaker 1: Seattle's re-signed Witherspoon and Willner Williams. And meanwhile, the Patriots
- 35:37Speaker 1: are still trying to figure out what Christian Gonzalez and
- 35:39Speaker 1: what's that going to mean. Wouldn't like that to be
- 35:42Speaker 1: the narrative.
- 35:42Speaker 6: Does anybody have any concern that he would not play?
- 35:48Speaker 4: No. At least some games?
- 35:50Speaker 2: I think he would have played, but I think the
- 35:54Speaker 2: slightest injury, he'd be out.
- 35:56Speaker 4: That's kind of how I feel.
- 35:57Speaker 3: Not play flat out, like hold out and not play
- 35:59Speaker 3: because of the contract.
- 36:00Speaker 4: Like Logan Mankins.
- 36:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 36:01Speaker 1: No.
- 36:02Speaker 5: No.
- 36:03Speaker 3: If he tweaks his hamstring on the opening drive against Seattle,
- 36:06Speaker 3: does he shut it down?
- 36:07Speaker 5: Right.
- 36:08Speaker 2: That's a different. That's the fear.
- 36:10Speaker 1: I want all that going on.
- 36:11Speaker 4: I agree with you guys.
- 36:12Speaker 2: Okay. Anything else before we open up to callers, emailers?
- 36:18Speaker 4: Fontline's a stat.
- 36:19Speaker 1: We got through all the roster stuff. It was a
- 36:21Speaker 1: lot yesterday.
- 36:22Speaker 3: It was a busy day for personnel. The last two
- 36:25Speaker 3: days was as busy as it gets in terms of
- 36:28Speaker 3: roster moves. Guys going to IR, claims, cutting veterans. There
- 36:34Speaker 3: was a lot of moving parts.
- 36:35Speaker 5: Yep.
- 36:36Speaker 2: We haven't had a show since the Patriots premiere. Marcus
- 36:39Speaker 2: Jones is the Ron Burton award winner this year.
- 36:43Speaker 5: Yep. Marcus.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Marcus.
- 36:46Speaker 2: Any other news since the last show?
- 36:50Speaker 5: No? No.
- 36:50Speaker 1: I don't think so. I think we'll hear from Vrabel
- 36:53Speaker 1: here at 1 o'clock, so we'll see kind of his
- 36:55Speaker 1: thoughts on the state of the roster.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Good, Mike. A little programming note. We will go to
- 37:00Speaker 2: Mike Vrabel live at 1 o'clock. So we're in season
- 37:04Speaker 2: mode here. We are.
- 37:05Speaker 1: We are. We've all been talking about it. You want
- 37:07Speaker 1: to get on to the season schedule, and this Wednesday game,
- 37:10Speaker 1: I think, is screwing everybody up, even when you're like,
- 37:12Speaker 1: you're in the week before. But I am looking forward, though,
- 37:15Speaker 1: to having that Sunday, the first Sunday of football, and
- 37:17Speaker 1: not having our own game and being able to.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Just catch up on the league.
- 37:20Speaker 4: It's a nice early red zone Sunday for me.
- 37:23Speaker 2: So we're going to have to do picks. Next week
- 37:28Speaker 2: on Tuesday?
- 37:30Speaker 1: Thursday, this week.
- 37:31Speaker 6: Yeah, so you guys, and this is probably more of
- 37:34Speaker 6: an off-air conversation, but I think maybe on Thursday we
- 37:38Speaker 6: might have to do something at least because you guys
- 37:41Speaker 6: are not going to be part of the Tuesday show.
- 37:43Speaker 2: No.
- 37:44Speaker 4: You're not going to be part of the Thursday show.
- 37:45Speaker 5: No.
- 37:46Speaker 6: Which, you know, you guys get home, I don't know,
- 37:48Speaker 6: maybe two hours after. Mike and I do, but we'll
- 37:49Speaker 6: be in here doing a show.
- 37:51Speaker 4: Two hours? Maybe three.
- 37:54Speaker 2: You're going to be home at 4 a.m.? It'll be good.
- 37:56Speaker 4: I'm hoping to be home by 3.30.
- 38:00Speaker 5: All right.
- 38:00Speaker 2: So we'll figure that out. All right. 855-PASS-500 is the hotline.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Podcasts at Patriots.com is the email address. And as Paul said,
- 38:09Speaker 2: the phone lines are stacked. So let's attempt to unstack them.
- 38:15Speaker 2: Sean's in Vancouver. What's up, Sean?
- 38:18Speaker 16: I'm in Montreal today, but I'll be in Vancouver eventually.
- 38:20Speaker 5: Okay.
- 38:21Speaker 3: You're on St.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Catherine Street?
- 38:22Speaker 12: Bonjour.
- 38:23Speaker 16: Yeah, I'll go down there probably on Thursday and hang
- 38:26Speaker 16: out in a closed area on St.
- 38:28Speaker 17: Catherine.
- 38:29Speaker 16: But that's not what I called. I want to know
- 38:32Speaker 16: if there's any chance the Patriots would still bring in
- 38:36Speaker 16: Dequan Jones to add to the roster. I have one
- 38:39Speaker 16: more question. In terms of the tackle depth, if their
- 38:44Speaker 16: tackles get injured, like if either... Morgan Moses, or will
- 38:50Speaker 16: Campbell go down? Do you think left tackle would be
- 38:55Speaker 16: backed up by Lomo and then right tackle by Crownover?
- 39:01Speaker 1: I think Lomo would play first.
- 39:05Speaker 4: And the new guy has some tackle experience, right?
- 39:08Speaker 1: Yes.
- 39:08Speaker 4: Doesn't Rouse?
- 39:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I would say more leans, tackles, and guard.
- 39:11Speaker 4: But I would say crown over before him since he
- 39:13Speaker 4: just got here.
- 39:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I would really like to think that
- 39:17Speaker 3: Lomu's at least ready to be the top swing tackle.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:20Speaker 3: As a guy you drafted in the first round. That
- 39:23Speaker 3: was the role that I think we all envisioned him
- 39:26Speaker 3: having anyways coming into the season, barring a camp injury.
- 39:30Speaker 3: to one of the two guys.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Herm's in D.C. What's up, Herm?
- 39:34Speaker 15: Hey, what's going on, gentlemen?
- 39:36Speaker 5: Hey, Herm.
- 39:37Speaker 4: Hey, Herm.
- 39:39Speaker 15: Fred, real quick, what's the name?
- 39:40Speaker 5: I keep forgetting.
- 39:41Speaker 15: What's the name of your YouTube channel again? Because I'm
- 39:43Speaker 15: getting ready to move to a house.
- 39:45Speaker 2: My YouTube channel is called Live from the Toby House.
- 39:49Speaker 15: Live from the Toby house.
- 39:51Speaker 2: Live from the Toby house. And we just posted one
- 39:54Speaker 2: about hobbies, but the one before that, I talked to
- 39:58Speaker 2: my electrician about putting in the whole house generator. So
- 40:01Speaker 2: you might want to take a look at that one.
- 40:03Speaker 1: Kicks right on.
- 40:04Speaker 6: You might want to take a look at that one.
- 40:07Speaker 3: When Deuce and I start talking about backup guards.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Backup generators.
- 40:13Speaker 15: Two quick questions, and then I'm going to shut up
- 40:15Speaker 15: and let you guys do your thing. So my first
- 40:17Speaker 15: question is, So.
- 40:19Speaker 7: Obviously, with the whole Gonzo, Kajita, whatever, I forgot who
- 40:24Speaker 7: he was, but somebody brought up essentially that Gonzo only, quote-unquote,
- 40:28Speaker 7: only has three picks in three years.
- 40:31Speaker 15: So my first question.
- 40:32Speaker 18: To you guys is, is it a lack of just
- 40:37Speaker 18: people not throwing at him, or is it something scheme-related,
- 40:41Speaker 18: his lack of picks?
- 40:42Speaker 15: And my second question is, so when we play the L.A. Rams,
- 40:49Speaker 15: in the Super Bowl, what will be a game plan
- 40:53Speaker 15: to account for? I mean, in essence, it's official that
- 40:56Speaker 15: Aaron Donald is back to account for Donald and obviously
- 41:01Speaker 15: Miles Garrett.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Move the pocket.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Move the pocket, get it out of the quarterback's hands,
- 41:07Speaker 2: run right at them at times. Let their aggression be there.
- 41:13Speaker 2: I'm kind of waiting for the Rams hate to kick in.
- 41:15Speaker 2: When are people going to get sick of the Rams?
- 41:17Speaker 1: Like, have they not won enough? Is that why people
- 41:19Speaker 1: don't hate them yet?
- 41:20Speaker 5: Is that why?
- 41:21Speaker 1: Like, they don't really have fans. That's true.
- 41:23Speaker 3: Like no offense.
- 41:24Speaker 1: No one to like go at.
- 41:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 41:26Speaker 3: Like there's no, it's not like one of.
- 41:28Speaker 1: These excited about it this year.
- 41:29Speaker 3: Nobody diehard fan bases.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Like what, who you like, what Rams fan are you
- 41:33Speaker 3: going to yell at?
- 41:34Speaker 6: Like, I heard something today, and I don't know if
- 41:38Speaker 6: it was true, but it was on the radio, so
- 41:39Speaker 6: it has to be true, right, Fred?
- 41:41Speaker 2: Right.
- 41:41Speaker 6: On my shows. Their odds to win the Super Bowl are, like, ridiculous,
- 41:47Speaker 6: you know.
- 41:48Speaker 2: Three to one.
- 41:49Speaker 6: Anybody that had, like, something like over the last 20 years,
- 41:55Speaker 6: there's been a handful of teams that have had similar
- 41:58Speaker 6: kind of odds, and none of them have won the
- 42:00Speaker 6: Super Bowl.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. The odds are, look. Overall, the odds are
- 42:05Speaker 2: against them to win. Oh, yeah.
- 42:07Speaker 3: I would take the field. As absolutely stacked talents-wise that
- 42:11Speaker 3: they are, they're older. Like Matthew Stafford's 40. Aaron Donald's
- 42:16Speaker 3: coming out of retirement to play. Miles Garrett's even getting
- 42:19Speaker 3: a little bit older. So if there's one thing that
- 42:22Speaker 3: I think that can stop the Rams, it's going to
- 42:24Speaker 3: be injuries and wear and tear on those guys.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Kuka does something crazy. Matthew Stafford's back is all screwed up.
- 42:30Speaker 5: Right, right.
- 42:31Speaker 3: But to Herm's first question about Gonzalez, typically guys that
- 42:35Speaker 3: play a lot of press man don't have a lot
- 42:37Speaker 3: of picks because their back is to the quarterback. So
- 42:39Speaker 3: guys that play in zone or off coverage, they have
- 42:42Speaker 3: eyes in the backfield. So they have vision, as the
- 42:47Speaker 3: cornerbacks coaches like to call it, in the backfield. So
- 42:50Speaker 3: you can see the ball coming out of the quarterback's
- 42:52Speaker 3: hands and you can jump the passes and things like that.
- 42:55Speaker 3: When your back's to the quarterback, it's harder to obviously turn.
- 42:59Speaker 2: Ty Law had a lot of picks because he would
- 43:01Speaker 2: just leave his man and go do whatever he wanted
- 43:03Speaker 2: to do.
- 43:03Speaker 3: Yeah, even like Darrell Rivas, a lot of it is
- 43:07Speaker 3: targets too, but his career high in picks I think
- 43:10Speaker 3: was six, like five or six. It's not like those
- 43:13Speaker 3: guys have huge.
- 43:15Speaker 1: They turn around, it's right there. It's not like, oh.
- 43:18Speaker 4: I just feel like they're very circumstantial. I agree with
- 43:21Speaker 4: Evan wholeheartedly. Does the guy cover well?
- 43:24Speaker 12: Yep.
- 43:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, you can watch him. You can see him.
- 43:27Speaker 4: He's generally, you know, he generally has good coverage.
- 43:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:31Speaker 4: And sometimes you're going to make plays. Like, look at
- 43:34Speaker 4: Kevin Byard's stats.
- 43:34Speaker 1: That's how I was just going to bring him up.
- 43:36Speaker 6: Like, he goes from, like, eight picks to zero picks. Like,
- 43:40Speaker 6: it just fluctuates. Sometimes they come in bunches and sometimes
- 43:44Speaker 6: they don't.
- 43:44Speaker 2: I mean, Devin McCourty, his first rookie season, had six
- 43:48Speaker 2: picks as a rookie.
- 43:50Speaker 13: Right.
- 43:50Speaker 3: I don't remember the exact number, but a lot of.
- 43:53Speaker 2: It was just right place at the right time.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:55Speaker 3: I would like, yeah, I think that they could play
- 43:57Speaker 3: a little bit more off man with Gonzalez and let
- 43:59Speaker 3: him see the ball a little bit more, but that's
- 44:02Speaker 3: the usual rule of thumb is when you play a
- 44:04Speaker 3: ton of man, especially press man, like you're, you know,
- 44:07Speaker 3: just inherently your back is to the quarterback because you're
- 44:09Speaker 3: running with the receiver. So you're not looking at the ball.
- 44:12Speaker 3: So it's harder to make the play on the ball.
- 44:14Speaker 2: Tim's in Virginia.
- 44:15Speaker 10: Hey, Tim.
- 44:17Speaker 19: Hey, this is Tim from First Time Caller. I just
- 44:22Speaker 19: wanted to ask, with the Christian Gonzalez contract taking so
- 44:27Speaker 19: long to get done, does this worry you next season
- 44:32Speaker 19: that it's going to be the same sort of process
- 44:34Speaker 19: for Drake May? And I'll just take.
- 44:37Speaker 2: It off of you. Thanks, guys. That's a good question.
- 44:39Speaker 2: That's a good question. What will that look like? Because
- 44:41Speaker 2: a little bit, you know, with Brady... It did seem
- 44:46Speaker 2: like a lot of it was behind the scenes. Like
- 44:49Speaker 2: it never really rose to becoming, you know, big news.
- 44:53Speaker 3: Until the end.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Until the end. Until the end. So I guess my
- 45:01Speaker 2: point is this is kind of uncharted territory for the
- 45:04Speaker 2: Patriots since Bledsoe.
- 45:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, definitely. Just obviously it's all inflation and
- 45:10Speaker 3: stuff in terms of relative to the cap. But this
- 45:13Speaker 3: is going to be by far the biggest contract that
- 45:17Speaker 3: they've ever handed out.
- 45:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:18Speaker 1: And what else do you have money for than to
- 45:20Speaker 1: pay a quarterback like Drake May?
- 45:22Speaker 2: Now, who is May's agent?
- 45:24Speaker 3: That's a good question.
- 45:25Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 45:25Speaker 2: Oh, we need to find that out.
- 45:27Speaker 1: I would love it if it gets done like Brady wants,
- 45:29Speaker 1: where all of a sudden, out of nowhere in the offseason,
- 45:31Speaker 1: it's just kind of done.
- 45:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:33Speaker 1: It doesn't become this thing that's hanging over the team.
- 45:35Speaker 3: Because, like, Gonzalez and, like, Milton Williams, like, not that
- 45:39Speaker 3: that's not a lot of money, don't get me wrong,
- 45:41Speaker 3: but we're talking about $ 100, $ 130, like, in total value.
- 45:45Speaker 3: This is going to be, like.
- 45:46Speaker 19: $ 400.
- 45:46Speaker 3: So can his play this year change things, good or bad?
- 45:56Speaker 3: I think in terms of how much of it's fully guaranteed,
- 45:58Speaker 3: it could.
- 45:59Speaker 1: I don't know how bad. I don't know how bad
- 46:01Speaker 1: it would have to be.
- 46:02Speaker 3: The total value in the AAV, I don't think, changes.
- 46:05Speaker 3: I mean, a lot of bad quarterbacks have gotten the bag.
- 46:09Speaker 3: I've already slotted kind of what it's.
- 46:11Speaker 2: Generally going to be.
- 46:12Speaker 3: But in terms of how, like, if they sign him
- 46:15Speaker 3: to a four- or five-year extension, how many of those
- 46:17Speaker 3: years are fully guaranteed? It might only be three and
- 46:21Speaker 3: a half if he has just an okay year versus...
- 46:24Speaker 3: you know, really getting them all guaranteed, like Deshaun Watson style.
- 46:27Speaker 1: You just wonder if the Cam Newton, Mac Jones, that
- 46:30Speaker 1: whole thing, if that, it's just a reminder of how
- 46:34Speaker 1: hard it is to go back into the wilderness to
- 46:36Speaker 1: find a quarterback again, and Drake's good enough that you
- 46:39Speaker 1: feel like you're investing in a guy who's going to
- 46:41Speaker 1: keep you in the mix, regardless of what happens around him.
- 46:44Speaker 1: So I just, I would hope that this would not
- 46:47Speaker 1: be dragged out and all that, you know, all this controversy.
- 46:51Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm a big believer in that. Like, even if
- 46:54Speaker 6: I mean, some of these go bad. I mean, some
- 46:57Speaker 6: of these big contracts, obviously the guy turns out to
- 47:00Speaker 6: level off and not be worth that. But I think
- 47:03Speaker 6: we've seen enough of these kinds of situations where, yes,
- 47:07Speaker 6: that's going to hurt your team because now you're back
- 47:09Speaker 6: in the abyss that Mike just talked about. You have
- 47:13Speaker 6: to find another guy that can get you to that level.
- 47:17Speaker 6: But if you do, like I think we've seen, say,
- 47:20Speaker 6: like in Denver, right? you know, you mess up royally
- 47:23Speaker 6: with Russell Wilson, and that's not great, but you were
- 47:28Speaker 6: able to get out of the abyss immediately with Bo Nix,
- 47:30Speaker 6: and even though you have all of this dead cap money,
- 47:34Speaker 6: it didn't really hurt Denver. They were a playoff team
- 47:37Speaker 6: two years in a row. So to me, the bigger
- 47:41Speaker 6: issue is now you, it's not the cap and the contract,
- 47:46Speaker 6: it's what do we do now? This guy isn't as
- 47:49Speaker 6: good as we thought.
- 47:51Speaker 4: How do we replace him? How do we get better
- 47:53Speaker 4: at that position?
- 47:54Speaker 6: Because I think we've seen there aren't very many teams
- 47:57Speaker 6: in the league that aren't settled at that position that
- 47:59Speaker 6: are any good. You know, so that would be my
- 48:03Speaker 6: fear is that Drake May doesn't live up to the contract. Yeah,
- 48:06Speaker 6: I mean, that's not great for Robert Kraft and Jonathan Kraft. Obviously,
- 48:09Speaker 6: it's a lot of money. But you can get past
- 48:12Speaker 6: it if you can find a replacement. You can't get
- 48:15Speaker 6: past it if, you know, he just isn't good enough.
- 48:18Speaker 5: You don't know.
- 48:18Speaker 1: You could be the Broncos. You could also be the Jets.
- 48:20Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 48:21Speaker 4: I think he's a CAA guy, by the way.
- 48:23Speaker 3: He is, Jimmy Sexton.
- 48:24Speaker 4: Jimmy Sexton, I think, is his agent.
- 48:27Speaker 6: So he's been a guy who's been a lot of
- 48:29Speaker 6: high profile, Jimmy Sexton, over the years.
- 48:31Speaker 3: One of the power agents, for sure.
- 48:33Speaker 6: So, in other words, don't expect it to just be,
- 48:37Speaker 6: you know, easy peasy. This is a guy who's been
- 48:40Speaker 6: around the block a little bit.
- 48:43Speaker 2: Melvin's in Tennessee. What's up, sweet kid?
- 48:46Speaker 9: What's going on?
- 48:46Speaker 7: All right.
- 48:47Speaker 8: Hey, Melvin.
- 48:48Speaker 9: Hey, obviously, I think the most important group that we got, obviously,
- 48:54Speaker 9: heading in is, for me, the offensive line. Obviously, we
- 48:59Speaker 9: saw a Seattle deal last time, and just the quick
- 49:03Speaker 9: game itself, getting the ball up fast is something I
- 49:05Speaker 9: still want to see from Drake, especially tonight. Startup season
- 49:09Speaker 9: turnovers and stuff like that are going to be pivotal.
- 49:12Speaker 9: That always happens. It's always sloppy at the beginning of
- 49:15Speaker 9: the year in particular. So I just want to see...
- 49:19Speaker 9: I'm a skill that I don't know if you can
- 49:21Speaker 9: literally prepare for. But Tom Brady will take hits like
- 49:26Speaker 9: that and always never lose the ball. But the ball
- 49:28Speaker 9: is on the... on the ground a lot with Drake
- 49:31Speaker 9: and he says all the right things on the podium,
- 49:32Speaker 9: but it just is what it is. I want to
- 49:34Speaker 9: do everything that I can really just like to improve
- 49:37Speaker 9: and not have him take those shots and just improve
- 49:40Speaker 9: his ball skills. Cause I think if we can handle that,
- 49:43Speaker 9: I think that the, we obviously got harder, a couple
- 49:45Speaker 9: of harder opponents this year for the time we're going
- 49:48Speaker 9: to be at one turnover, two could swing the game.
- 49:50Speaker 9: So I'm just looking forward to that. And I think
- 49:53Speaker 9: if they get all this stuff cleared up, uh, they
- 49:55Speaker 9: should be fine. Um, you know, heading to the season.
- 49:58Speaker 9: But I thought Bill said something one time, like, almost like, obviously, like,
- 50:02Speaker 9: a good play also is just an incomplete pass or
- 50:04Speaker 9: throwing the ball away. I think that's something that he
- 50:07Speaker 9: needs to work on still. I know Drake still wants
- 50:09Speaker 9: to make big plays, but sometimes a good play is
- 50:12Speaker 9: an incomplete. So just protecting the ball is important at
- 50:16Speaker 9: the beginning of the year. That's all I got.
- 50:18Speaker 2: All right. Thanks, Mel. Ball security.
- 50:21Speaker 3: Sacks and fumbles. Those are the two biggest things for
- 50:23Speaker 3: him is, like, Final Frontier. And throwing quick against Seattle
- 50:27Speaker 3: is kind of, is sort of playing into their hands though.
- 50:30Speaker 3: Like that, that's, they want you to do that. Like
- 50:33Speaker 3: that's how they're, they're trying to kind of bait you
- 50:35Speaker 3: into doing that. They have a lot of team speed
- 50:38Speaker 3: and a lot of really good tacklers. So you do that,
- 50:40Speaker 3: then you're going to be, you know, three yard completions
- 50:43Speaker 3: at a time. It's going to be a long way
- 50:45Speaker 3: to grandma's house.
- 50:45Speaker 2: Frustrating.
- 50:46Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 50:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Let's go to Kansas city, Trevor. What's up, Trevor?
- 50:52Speaker 5: Trevor.
- 50:53Speaker 12: Hey, guys. I'm going to channel my inner Willem and
- 50:56Speaker 12: Phil and then rant a little bit.
- 50:59Speaker 1: Stop first and take a breath.
- 51:04Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 51:04Speaker 2: Get worked up.
- 51:05Speaker 12: I'm kind of frustrated with how the team has handled
- 51:07Speaker 12: the offensive skill position since Vrabel took over. Now, don't
- 51:11Speaker 12: get me wrong. We got A.J.
- 51:12Speaker 2: Brown.
- 51:12Speaker 12: I'm not saying we're terrible, but starting with the draft
- 51:16Speaker 12: last year, you're on the clock. Luther Burton's on the board.
- 51:20Speaker 12: You take Travion Henderson. Two weeks ago, Deuce was giving
- 51:24Speaker 12: us a dissertation on how Mondrae is clearly better than Henderson.
- 51:27Speaker 12: And I'm not saying Deuce is wrong, but if Deuce
- 51:30Speaker 12: is right, then that was not a good pick. You
- 51:32Speaker 12: took a running back high on day two that isn't
- 51:35Speaker 12: better than Ramondre Stevenson? Mondrae's fine, but we're not talking
- 51:39Speaker 12: about Christian McCaffrey. And then you move over to.
- 51:42Speaker 20: Can.
- 51:43Speaker 4: I interrupt you for a second, Trevor? Yeah, go ahead.
- 51:47Speaker 4: Because I like this stuff. I like talking about this stuff.
- 51:50Speaker 4: So you just said Ramondre's fine. It's not like he's
- 51:53Speaker 4: Christian McCaffrey.
- 51:55Speaker 6: And then you're saying that picking a guy high in
- 51:58Speaker 6: the second round would be a bad pick if he's
- 51:59Speaker 6: not better than Ramondre Stevenson.
- 52:01Speaker 4: Well, where did Christian McCaffrey get picked?
- 52:04Speaker 12: Sure, he went high, but Jonathan Taylor went at the
- 52:06Speaker 12: top of the second round.
- 52:06Speaker 6: He didn't go high. He was a top-five pick. Like,
- 52:10Speaker 6: that's a whole round higher than Trevion Henderson. What are
- 52:13Speaker 6: we expecting from a high second-round running back? I think
- 52:17Speaker 6: Henderson's been.
- 52:17Speaker 12: Jonathan Taylor, Brees Hall, maybe?
- 52:20Speaker 6: I think you kind of got a different– you know,
- 52:24Speaker 6: he's not the same as those guys, but he has
- 52:27Speaker 6: the potential, you know, to be that productive.
- 52:32Speaker 4: Well– Like, he's not the same as Jonathan Taylor.
- 52:34Speaker 6: I don't think he's ever going to be a workhorse
- 52:36Speaker 6: like Jonathan Taylor or Brees Hall.
- 52:39Speaker 4: But he's very productive in his role.
- 52:42Speaker 2: I'm surprised you're taking this stance, Paul, because you've got
- 52:45Speaker 2: a guy who you like in Ramondre Stevenson. In your
- 52:49Speaker 2: draft room, I couldn't see you picking a running back
- 52:53Speaker 2: high second round.
- 52:54Speaker 6: So I wouldn't have taken the running back high second round.
- 52:59Speaker 6: But that's not, I don't think, Trevor's argument. Trevor's argument
- 53:01Speaker 6: is that he doesn't think Henderson's that good. I think
- 53:04Speaker 6: Henderson's been fine. Well, I mean, it's Because he's not
- 53:07Speaker 6: Christian McCaffrey, he doesn't make it a bad pick to me.
- 53:10Speaker 2: Well, no.
- 53:11Speaker 12: No, but you have Luther Burden, who's probably the number
- 53:13Speaker 12: one receiver on the Bears already. He would have been
- 53:15Speaker 12: the best receiver we've drafted since.
- 53:18Speaker 4: So I like Luther Burden.
- 53:19Speaker 6: I do think there were some off-field concerns that a
- 53:22Speaker 6: lot of teams had, and that's why he ended up
- 53:23Speaker 6: being a first-round talent who was taken in the second round. Now,
- 53:26Speaker 6: you could make an argument that there's a lot of
- 53:28Speaker 6: guys that come out with character concerns that end up
- 53:32Speaker 6: panning out in maybe... They didn't take him, and they
- 53:35Speaker 6: should have. I mean, I think that's a fair second
- 53:37Speaker 6: guess that Trevor has. But continue, because I like these
- 53:40Speaker 6: kinds of going back.
- 53:41Speaker 2: Okay, but regardless, do you think taking a running back
- 53:44Speaker 2: in the high second round was good for the Patriots?
- 53:46Speaker 6: I think the player was good. I would have probably
- 53:48Speaker 6: done something else. But I think Henderson's a pretty good player.
- 53:52Speaker 5: I do, too.
- 53:54Speaker 2: But I get what Trevor's saying.
- 53:55Speaker 12: I don't think it was bad. I just feel like
- 53:57Speaker 12: second-year running back, you'd kind of expect to be your
- 54:00Speaker 12: best running back if you're taking him high.
- 54:02Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 54:04Speaker 12: It's not that he's a bad player. I'm not here
- 54:06Speaker 12: comparing him to the Polks or the Tyquan Thorntons that
- 54:08Speaker 12: we drafted in the second round.
- 54:11Speaker 6: I just think if they had taken someone like B.
- 54:13Speaker 6: John Robinson or Jameer Gibbs, I'm taking him with the
- 54:16Speaker 6: idea that he's going to be my best running back
- 54:18Speaker 6: in year two. I'm not doing that with a second-round pick.
- 54:22Speaker 6: I'm not all in that this guy's got to be
- 54:24Speaker 6: better than the guy I have.
- 54:25Speaker 2: Even at the running back position?
- 54:26Speaker 4: I wouldn't have taken running back because you know I
- 54:28Speaker 4: don't really value the position.
- 54:30Speaker 6: But I'm saying it's a second round pick, not a
- 54:32Speaker 6: first round pick.
- 54:33Speaker 2: You're kind of lending toward... you wouldn't take a running
- 54:37Speaker 2: back high second round. But I wouldn't have taken B.
- 54:39Speaker 4: John Robinson where they took him either, and obviously I
- 54:41Speaker 4: was wrong.
- 54:42Speaker 2: Okay. Because I'm just going to say, if you are
- 54:45Speaker 2: going to take a running back high second round, should
- 54:48Speaker 2: the expectation be he's going to be a starter?
- 54:50Speaker 4: No, second round picks are.
- 54:52Speaker 2: Okay.
- 54:53Speaker 6: Can we call him a starter? Does he have to
- 54:55Speaker 6: be the only running back to be the starter?
- 54:57Speaker 2: Well, he's your lead back.
- 54:59Speaker 4: He was an instrumental part of the offense last year.
- 55:02Speaker 4: Was he not?
- 55:02Speaker 2: I kind of get what Trevor's saying. You know, I
- 55:06Speaker 2: kind of get it.
- 55:07Speaker 6: I like Stevenson's all-around game more than I like Henderson's.
- 55:11Speaker 6: So I'm more comfortable with him on the field more
- 55:14Speaker 6: often than Henderson. But Henderson has far more big playability
- 55:18Speaker 6: than Stevenson does.
- 55:19Speaker 2: Well, he's much faster, for sure.
- 55:22Speaker 12: Well, I'm not saying Henderson needs 20 carries a game
- 55:25Speaker 12: because that's not the player he is. I'm saying Deuce
- 55:28Speaker 12: is telling me that Mondre is a better player.
- 55:30Speaker 4: He is a better player. Deuce is right.
- 55:32Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 55:33Speaker 12: So, you know, I feel like if you drafted a
- 55:36Speaker 12: running back specifically in the second round, they should be
- 55:38Speaker 12: really good, because a running back in.
- 55:40Speaker 4: The second round to me is kind of like.
- 55:41Speaker 2: He is really good.
- 55:41Speaker 4: Stevenson's better.
- 55:43Speaker 1: But they're also different players. I mean, it's, they're both
- 55:45Speaker 1: running backs, but I think you're in a perfect world.
- 55:48Speaker 1: They're drafting him in the second round and you've got
- 55:50Speaker 1: thunder and lightning and, you know, he really develops into
- 55:52Speaker 1: a passing down back that you can trust. And I
- 55:54Speaker 1: don't think he's done that yet.
- 55:56Speaker 6: Or he could be what he was last year and
- 55:57Speaker 6: be your home run threat. Now, maybe that was a fluke.
- 56:00Speaker 6: Maybe he's not going to do that again. Matter of fact,
- 56:02Speaker 6: I'm not expecting four 50 plus yard touchdowns again, but
- 56:06Speaker 6: I think he showed you as a change of pace,
- 56:08Speaker 6: he did have that ability.
- 56:10Speaker 2: And is that worth the pick? What you saw last year.
- 56:13Speaker 6: Again, I don't value running backs. But, yes, he was
- 56:16Speaker 6: a second-round pick. I think we're acting like we took
- 56:19Speaker 6: him at number five.
- 56:21Speaker 4: Like Robinson, Gibbs, and McCaffrey. Those guys were all top
- 56:24Speaker 4: 12 in the draft.
- 56:24Speaker 2: I still value the second round.
- 56:26Speaker 1: I do.
- 56:26Speaker 4: I value the second round, too. That's value.
- 56:29Speaker 2: Okay.
- 56:30Speaker 6: 1,000-plus all-purpose yards in his rookie year.
- 56:32Speaker 4: I mean, how many touchdowns?
- 56:34Speaker 2: I think that's kind of the— What are you looking
- 56:36Speaker 2: for for value? I think what Trevor's saying, and I
- 56:38Speaker 2: don't want to put words in your mouth, but specifically
- 56:40Speaker 2: this position— If you're going to draft at high second round,
- 56:44Speaker 2: the expectation in Trevor's mind should be this guy's going
- 56:48Speaker 2: to be our starter, our lead back.
- 56:49Speaker 4: So maybe Stevenson's better than you think he is, and
- 56:52Speaker 4: it's a you issue.
- 56:53Speaker 2: Right. Could be.
- 56:54Speaker 6: Maybe, Trevor, this might be a Paul problem because we
- 56:58Speaker 6: all know that I have a soft spot for Madre Stevenson.
- 57:01Speaker 4: I think he's pretty good.
- 57:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Maybe he's just that good.
- 57:04Speaker 12: I don't think he's bad. I just think he's kind of,
- 57:06Speaker 12: I mean, he's above average. I wouldn't call him a
- 57:09Speaker 12: top-end running back.
- 57:10Speaker 2: I think if he hadn't had the fumble problem at
- 57:12Speaker 2: the beginning of the year, you'd be thinking differently about him.
- 57:18Speaker 4: I think he was their best offensive player in the playoffs.
- 57:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that stunted his season. But once he got back
- 57:23Speaker 2: on track, he was clearly your best back and maybe
- 57:27Speaker 2: one of, like you said, best offensive players outside of Diggs.
- 57:30Speaker 12: Right.
- 57:31Speaker 4: No, he was the best offensive player in the playoffs,
- 57:33Speaker 4: including Diggs.
- 57:34Speaker 2: Oh, in the playoffs, for sure, yeah. Because Diggs disappeared. Yeah.
- 57:38Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 57:39Speaker 2: Okay.
- 57:39Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 57:40Speaker 2: All right, Trevor. That's a good call. No, no, no, no, no.
- 57:43Speaker 6: Don't hang up on him because he had a couple
- 57:45Speaker 6: other skill position things. I assume Kyle Williams is coming
- 57:48Speaker 6: up here.
- 57:49Speaker 12: No, I don't have a problem with Kyle Williams. That's
- 57:52Speaker 12: a third-round pick. It's kind of late third round, mid-third round,
- 57:56Speaker 12: I guess. But my next thing would be Dobbs. I
- 57:59Speaker 12: know you guys like Dobbs, but the Packers don't have
- 58:01Speaker 12: a lot of receivers, and they let him go. That
- 58:04Speaker 12: doesn't give you any pause. I mean, it does to
- 58:06Speaker 12: me a little bit.
- 58:07Speaker 1: I think they got a pretty good receiver.
- 58:08Speaker 6: Packers have a very deep receiver. Christian Watson, Jalen Reed.
- 58:14Speaker 6: And then they got– he was a free agent. I mean,
- 58:17Speaker 6: someone's got to go.
- 58:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 58:19Speaker 6: And he was up in Dontavion Wicks. They had a
- 58:21Speaker 6: lot of receivers when Dobbs was there.
- 58:24Speaker 2: Wow.
- 58:24Speaker 12: I think they had a lot of average receivers.
- 58:27Speaker 4: Oh, and Matthew Golden, too. That's three.
- 58:31Speaker 12: He didn't do as much as Ricky here, either.
- 58:33Speaker 4: I know he didn't do much as.
- 58:36Speaker 6: If you just don't knock it out of the park
- 58:38Speaker 6: as a rookie, I guess you just stink.
- 58:40Speaker 2: Yeah, you're not going to give up on the guy,
- 58:42Speaker 2: you know, Matthew Golden.
- 58:45Speaker 6: Like, that's Kyle Williams. So this would be like the
- 58:48Speaker 6: Keishon Booty, Kyle Williams thing.
- 58:49Speaker 5: Should.
- 58:50Speaker 6: Should the Patriots have cut Kyle Williams because he didn't
- 58:52Speaker 6: do much in his rookie year and done everything in
- 58:54Speaker 6: their power to maintain booty? Now, Fred, you probably would
- 58:59Speaker 6: say yes, but I wouldn't. I think there's more upside
- 59:02Speaker 6: with Kyle Williams. I don't know they'll ever achieve it.
- 59:05Speaker 6: And same thing with Matthew Golden. I think Matthew Golden
- 59:08Speaker 6: is much more talented. than Kyle Williams. But maybe Trevor's right.
- 59:14Speaker 6: Maybe he just never pans out. And they're going to
- 59:17Speaker 6: be looking for a guy like Dobbs, and they're going
- 59:19Speaker 6: to lament having let him go because he was a
- 59:21Speaker 6: reliable sort of secondary receiver.
- 59:24Speaker 4: He's not a star.
- 59:26Speaker 1: Dobbs is not a number one.
- 59:28Speaker 2: Well, listen, all I know is that your guy, Felger,
- 59:31Speaker 2: is a huge Packer fan, even though he complains about him.
- 59:34Speaker 4: And he likes Dobbs.
- 59:34Speaker 2: He likes Dobbs.
- 59:35Speaker 4: Likes Dobbs, doesn't love him.
- 59:36Speaker 2: Doesn't love him, but said he was a good, capable receiver.
- 59:40Speaker 4: But it's also right in his wheelhouse of receivers.
- 59:44Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 59:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 59:46Speaker 2: I'm looking for a good, capable second. This is not
- 59:49Speaker 2: going to be our lead. If we had to sign A.J. Brown,
- 59:52Speaker 2: I'd be a little bit more worried.
- 59:54Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 59:54Speaker 2: But he's going to be second fiddle to A.J. Brown.
- 59:58Speaker 2: I like him in that role. And I think he's
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: going to be productive.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: I mean, if you watch him in training.
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: It's a great call, Trevor.
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: Last couple of weeks.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: I mean, it's it.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: None of us were inspired by him early on when
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: we saw him, but he's come around.
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: That's one of my favorite calls. I love those kinds
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: of discussions.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: Well, it's well thought out.
- 1:00:15Speaker 6: Yeah, but I love looking at drafts, looking at personnel
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: moves and free agents. You did this, you could have
- 1:00:21Speaker 6: done that. How would it look if it was Luther
- 1:00:23Speaker 6: Burden instead of Trevion Henderson? You might like it better.
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: That might have not made you have to spend $ 68
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: million on Romeo Dobbs. You know, maybe you'd still have booty.
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:00:36Speaker 6: You know, there's a lot of different dominoes that fall in. Like,
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: I kind of like those kinds of calls. Like, there's
- 1:00:42Speaker 6: no definitive right and wrong answer, but it's food for thought.
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: Just makes me think about Henderson and how he's going
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: to fit in and how much trust they have in
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: him right now. Because I think in a perfect world,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: I would love to feel like they have full confidence
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: in him to put him out there on third down.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: And no matter what needs to be done, he's going
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: to be like your Kevin Falk.
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: So that's not going to happen.
- 1:01:00Speaker 6: I'm just going to tell you right now that's not
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: going to happen because they have more confidence in Ramondre
- 1:01:04Speaker 6: Stevenson doing the third down stuff. That doesn't mean he's
- 1:01:07Speaker 6: not going to be out there on early downs. I
- 1:01:10Speaker 6: don't know why it has to be a third down
- 1:01:11Speaker 6: package because he's smaller.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Well, that's why.
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: But he's not a blitz pickup guy so far. Now,
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: maybe he'll come into it.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: He was supposed to be. He was good in college.
- 1:01:21Speaker 6: Yeah, but it's mental. It's not a physical thing. It's
- 1:01:24Speaker 6: a mental thing. And I don't think that he has
- 1:01:26Speaker 6: picked up necessarily the schemes.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: I agree totally with how you're painting him right now.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: And that's what's, it's not even like a down roll.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: It's just like a specific situational role where like we
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: need some juice right now. Like, you know, and that
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: seems like a very specific hard way to get this guy.
- 1:01:40Speaker 6: And I might be fooling myself into thinking he can
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: do what he did last year again. Because I was,
- 1:01:45Speaker 6: I'm going to tell you right now, I was underwhelmed
- 1:01:48Speaker 6: with him last summer. I know everybody went Gaga over
- 1:01:52Speaker 6: the kick return to start the preseason. And then evidently
- 1:01:54Speaker 6: it was a coverage breakdown in Minnesota that he just
- 1:01:57Speaker 6: ran a hundred yards with no one near him. And
- 1:01:59Speaker 6: everybody went crazy. We didn't see any of that kind
- 1:02:02Speaker 6: of stuff for eight weeks in the regular season. Then
- 1:02:07Speaker 6: all of a sudden it was like a big play
- 1:02:09Speaker 6: waiting to happen over like a four or five week stretch,
- 1:02:13Speaker 6: Tampa Bay giants, a couple of touchdowns, um, The Buffalo,
- 1:02:18Speaker 6: the two long touchdowns against Buffalo in the game that
- 1:02:21Speaker 6: they lost here.
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: Like, and it just exploded. Maybe I'm deceiving myself into
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: thinking that's what he is. And maybe that's kind of
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: wishful thinking on my part.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: It's a great debate because I don't really think any
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: of us know what he is.
- 1:02:33Speaker 6: Because he didn't have a great summer again. You know,
- 1:02:36Speaker 6: I was underwhelmed last summer. I've been even less impressed
- 1:02:39Speaker 6: what I've seen this summer.
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: He looks great when he kept a little wheel route
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: going out.
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: I don't think he has great hands.
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: I don't think he looks natural in the passing game.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: A little lob out of the backfield and go, but
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: it hasn't been a lot.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: Patty's in Agawam. What's up, Patty?
- 1:02:54Speaker 21: What's up, guys?
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: Patty, I heard you on Paul's station promising Barth in
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: heart that you'd be calling in to their pregame show
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: every week.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: That's hurtful.
- 1:03:05Speaker 9: Yeah, I usually do on Sundays.
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: I hear you.
- 1:03:08Speaker 11: You know, you guys.
- 1:03:09Speaker 22: You guys come in later.
- 1:03:10Speaker 21: You guys have the real pregame show, and I like
- 1:03:13Speaker 21: to ask the real questions with.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: Com. Yeah. Okay. All right.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: Spreading yourself thin.
- 1:03:20Speaker 21: Plus, you know, Andy's got his Patriots ties, and Barth
- 1:03:24Speaker 21: is kind of a pseudo-Patriots.
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: We've got to go to Vrabel, Patty. Hold on.
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: Great.
- 1:03:31Speaker 20: You've got your roster down to 53.
- 1:03:33Speaker 14: You've acquired.
- 1:03:35Speaker 20: a few players in the process. I'm just wondering if
- 1:03:38Speaker 20: you feel any better about your depth with those moves.
- 1:03:42Speaker 23: Well, it's, you know, adding, you know, 10, I think,
- 1:03:45Speaker 23: new faces up to 10. That may continue to rise.
- 1:03:52Speaker 23: You know, those are new guys to work with, but also,
- 1:03:57Speaker 23: you know, we've got to get them moving pretty quick.
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: So that's okay.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: Sorry about that.
- 1:04:10Speaker 23: Just how we do things, how we practice, and every
- 1:04:13Speaker 23: place is different. There's 31 other teams and these guys
- 1:04:17Speaker 23: are all coming from somewhere new that they put a
- 1:04:21Speaker 23: lot of time in to learn in their system and
- 1:04:23Speaker 23: how they do things. Now we just have to ask
- 1:04:26Speaker 23: them in a short amount of time to try to
- 1:04:27Speaker 23: figure out.
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: How it is that we do things and.
- 1:04:31Speaker 23: How we operate and move and function and the flow
- 1:04:35Speaker 23: of this building. So I'm hopeful that that'll happen and
- 1:04:39Speaker 23: that those guys will be able to come in and
- 1:04:42Speaker 23: help us and find a role, and we'll work with
- 1:04:45Speaker 23: them to get them moving.
- 1:04:47Speaker 10: Thank you for talking about the roster, but also at
- 1:04:49Speaker 10: the beginning of camp, you discussed the sense of urgency.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: Eight days now to go, preseason behind you.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: What's your mindset and message to the players as they
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: get ready for the opener?
- 1:04:58Speaker 23: Well, I mean, we have to continue to build in
- 1:05:00Speaker 23: preparation and make sure that there's a lot left in
- 1:05:05Speaker 23: the tank, that the tank's full. When we get out
- 1:05:07Speaker 23: there on Wednesday night is when everything has to be
- 1:05:12Speaker 23: ready to go. We'll keep working towards that, but also
- 1:05:19Speaker 23: just be mindful. I don't think we can go seven
- 1:05:22Speaker 23: days straight. That's not necessarily the idea, so trying to
- 1:05:26Speaker 23: put a practice plan together that allows for the preparation,
- 1:05:30Speaker 23: the speed, and then maybe dial back and then ramp
- 1:05:34Speaker 23: back up again.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: Any word on captains or how you'll go through that?
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: I'll tell the team this afternoon at practice here in
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: a little bit.
- 1:05:44Speaker 23: I'm sure we'll get it from our social team.
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: For me, the players are the ones that pick the captains.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: You guys claimed two players yesterday.
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: What do you like about Cameron and Darius?
- 1:06:04Speaker 23: Um, Just guys that have really played NFL games, meaningful
- 1:06:11Speaker 23: football games. Darius has shown the ability to play both
- 1:06:15Speaker 23: spots inside. Zach had some comfort and some familiarity with
- 1:06:22Speaker 23: him in New York. I was with Cam during my
- 1:06:29Speaker 23: time in Cleveland and really enjoyed getting.
- 1:06:32Speaker 5: To know him and being able to work with him.
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: and try to help him.
- 1:06:36Speaker 23: And, you know, we had some conversations about him last
- 1:06:38Speaker 23: year and, uh, you know, he went on to do some,
- 1:06:42Speaker 23: some really good things to help Philadelphia. And then, you know,
- 1:06:44Speaker 23: we just thought it'd be a good opportunity to add
- 1:06:47Speaker 23: somebody that, uh, has excelled at special teams and, and also, um,
- 1:06:52Speaker 23: you know, looking to earn a role at tight end.
- 1:06:54Speaker 24: Mike, you've been a part of season openers. We're at
- 1:06:58Speaker 24: the whole, you guys opened the season 2002 against Pittsburgh,
- 1:07:01Speaker 24: for instance. What's, uh, What's different about opening the entire season,
- 1:07:06Speaker 24: if anything, and how do you translate it to the guys?
- 1:07:09Speaker 23: I mean, obviously that means that, you know, that you
- 1:07:12Speaker 23: either had a really good season or the people that
- 1:07:15Speaker 23: you're playing had a really good season. You know, there'll
- 1:07:19Speaker 23: be a lot of energy there. We'll have to be
- 1:07:20Speaker 23: ready for the environment and, you know, we'll have to
- 1:07:23Speaker 23: be really sound in our operation and everything that we do.
- 1:07:26Speaker 23: You know, the magnitude of it is, you know.
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: Always important.
- 1:07:31Speaker 23: There's not that many games. Every game is critically important.
- 1:07:36Speaker 23: It'll be a great test and a great challenge for
- 1:07:38Speaker 23: us to be able to go on the road and
- 1:07:41Speaker 23: do that early in the season.
- 1:07:43Speaker 14: Mike, how far back did you start working on Seattle,
- 1:07:45Speaker 14: at least in parts, whether it be in spring or
- 1:07:49Speaker 14: in the summer? Where did you sprinkle in things about
- 1:07:52Speaker 14: Seattle in this game?
- 1:07:56Speaker 23: I think you have to be careful how much you
- 1:07:57Speaker 23: do early on at I don't know how much gets retained.
- 1:08:01Speaker 23: You try to focus on fundamentals and our offense and
- 1:08:06Speaker 23: what it is that.
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: We're trying to do in all three phases.
- 1:08:11Speaker 23: There were times during training camp or times last week
- 1:08:15Speaker 23: that we tried to do stuff. I think you just
- 1:08:18Speaker 23: have to be careful. The first game is not much.
- 1:08:23Speaker 23: They've got a new coordinator and some things will be different.
- 1:08:26Speaker 23: I'm sure they'll have some plays that are similar that
- 1:08:28Speaker 23: they like and, you know, I think their defensive.
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: Structure, um, you know, may be the same. It may not. I'm,
- 1:08:36Speaker 5: it's a good defense. You know, they're very talented.
- 1:08:39Speaker 23: Um, you know, so you just have to, I guess,
- 1:08:43Speaker 23: be careful how much you show them and try to
- 1:08:45Speaker 23: focus on, you know, what it is that we're trying
- 1:08:48Speaker 23: to accomplish. And, you know, certainly we'll show them plenty
- 1:08:51Speaker 23: and have shown them some.
- 1:08:52Speaker 10: Have you been watching, uh, hard knocks with a close eye, uh,
- 1:08:56Speaker 10: tension or anything like that?
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: I mean, I think we go through it. It's not much. that's–
- 1:09:01Speaker 5: I mean, it's not like, you know, it's.
- 1:09:04Speaker 23: You get to operate and make sure they have content
- 1:09:09Speaker 23: and they can control the content.
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: You know, but we take a look at it just
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: to see what's going on.
- 1:09:14Speaker 20: When you look at the beginning of the season, how
- 1:09:16Speaker 20: big of a loss is– Harold Landry's injury status?
- 1:09:22Speaker 23: You know, I mean, we'd love to have Harold back.
- 1:09:24Speaker 23: We'd love to have Schooler back. You know what I mean?
- 1:09:26Speaker 23: But those guys, you know, I don't think that they–
- 1:09:29Speaker 23: I wasn't probably anticipating them being out there. So that's–
- 1:09:35Speaker 23: you know, I mean, if it was something that was sudden,
- 1:09:37Speaker 23: maybe that would be a little different.
- 1:09:38Speaker 5: But I don't– you know, I think the plan was
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: this isn't unexpected. Bryce, what's next?
- 1:09:45Speaker 20: Was there any thought of putting him on injured reserve
- 1:09:47Speaker 20: the day prior? Why was there kind of the way
- 1:09:50Speaker 20: to put him on injured reserve?
- 1:09:51Speaker 5: Just a different, you know, to be able to, you know,
- 1:09:56Speaker 5: different things with the roster.
- 1:09:58Speaker 23: So to be able to, you know, you get eight
- 1:10:00Speaker 23: of those designated for return and just wanted to see
- 1:10:05Speaker 23: kind of where that went and, you know, how you
- 1:10:08Speaker 23: use those throughout the.
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: Course of the year. So that was probably the reason.
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: How did you guys build the two open roster spots?
- 1:10:17Speaker 5: Filled the two?
- 1:10:18Speaker 23: Yeah, I think we claimed guys and we'll have to
- 1:10:20Speaker 23: continue to add to the practice squad.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: Bigger picture question.
- 1:10:26Speaker 10: Talk to many people this offseason, seek any advice, anything
- 1:10:29Speaker 10: like that, on just how to move on to the
- 1:10:32Speaker 10: next season following a Super Bowl loss. Is there anything
- 1:10:35Speaker 10: you've looked into as far as that?
- 1:10:38Speaker 23: No, I mean, we have a lot of new guys
- 1:10:39Speaker 23: on the roster. We have guys that are returning, our
- 1:10:41Speaker 23: core guys, and understand that the journey is going to
- 1:10:46Speaker 23: be a lot more difficult just based on how we finished.
- 1:10:52Speaker 23: But I think that if you can prepare and play
- 1:10:56Speaker 23: well and give yourself a chance to win, focus on
- 1:11:00Speaker 23: that particular game and then move on to the next
- 1:11:03Speaker 23: week and treat that independently of anything else, figure out
- 1:11:07Speaker 23: who's available. I think just staying consistent is probably– the
- 1:11:13Speaker 23: thing that we have to continue to do and not,
- 1:11:17Speaker 23: you know, ride the waves up here and then down
- 1:11:20Speaker 23: low and just, you know, try to stay consistent and
- 1:11:23Speaker 23: continue to improve. The teams that do that are usually
- 1:11:26Speaker 23: the ones that play in January.
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: How are you feeling about your depth on the core
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: special teams units?
- 1:11:31Speaker 23: And with all the change and injuries, are there any
- 1:11:33Speaker 23: guys that you're maybe hoping to step up in that regard?
- 1:11:37Speaker 23: I mean, I think it was good to see a
- 1:11:38Speaker 23: lot of the young guys improve on special teams, you know,
- 1:11:41Speaker 23: Gabe and Q and, You know, Nam, you know, Khalil
- 1:11:44Speaker 23: was working there before he got injured.
- 1:11:46Speaker 5: And, you know, some of the young gunners that we have.
- 1:11:49Speaker 23: And, you know, so, I mean, I think that that
- 1:11:51Speaker 23: was good to be able to get those guys a
- 1:11:53Speaker 23: lot of work in the preseason and in the joint practices.
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: A lot of those guys hadn't played special teams, certainly
- 1:12:00Speaker 5: at our level.
- 1:12:03Speaker 23: Or the demands of it, the tricks of the trade
- 1:12:05Speaker 23: and kind of what goes on out there. So, I
- 1:12:08Speaker 23: think some of the guys that we've acquired have played
- 1:12:11Speaker 23: special teams. We'll see where they are and how they adjust.
- 1:12:16Speaker 23: I forget your second question. The guys that are going
- 1:12:20Speaker 23: to step up or the guys that are going to
- 1:12:22Speaker 23: step up. I wish I could control how they step up.
- 1:12:27Speaker 23: The ones that take advantage of opportunities usually get more
- 1:12:32Speaker 23: opportunities and then will be out there.
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: The ones that don't usually have to.
- 1:12:36Speaker 23: Wait a little bit to have their turn come back.
- 1:12:40Speaker 11: Around You guys are still constructing and tinkering with the roster,
- 1:12:44Speaker 11: but do you feel that the core of it right now,
- 1:12:48Speaker 11: the 53, could compete for another Super Bowl?
- 1:12:51Speaker 23: We're focused on just competing against Seattle, not competing for
- 1:12:56Speaker 23: something that's going to happen in February.
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: We really just are trying.
- 1:13:00Speaker 23: To indoctrinate and, I guess, onboard these new players to–
- 1:13:07Speaker 23: understand our language, our terminology, how we practice, where to go.
- 1:13:11Speaker 5: I mean, they just got in there.
- 1:13:14Speaker 23: Late last night, and they're going through that process. But
- 1:13:21Speaker 23: I love the guys that we have. We're going to
- 1:13:24Speaker 23: try to get the young guys going, but also get
- 1:13:26Speaker 23: the guys that just got here. So there's 10 new guys,
- 1:13:29Speaker 23: and some of them are on the practice squad, some
- 1:13:31Speaker 23: of them are on the 53-man roster.
- 1:13:34Speaker 25: Mike, when you construct the 53-man roster, is your focus
- 1:13:39Speaker 25: mainly keeping the best 53 players, or you also consider
- 1:13:44Speaker 25: some of the positions that you can afford to put
- 1:13:47Speaker 25: on practice squad and elevate during the game day?
- 1:13:50Speaker 23: I think that there's a lot to it. Some of
- 1:13:53Speaker 23: the guys that are on the practice squad will get
- 1:13:55Speaker 23: elevated to try to use those rules as much as
- 1:14:00Speaker 23: we can. Sometimes it comes down to young players that
- 1:14:05Speaker 23: it's a game of who you might lose and who
- 1:14:09Speaker 23: somebody else may claim. You don't know what they saw
- 1:14:12Speaker 23: in the player or maybe they saw in preseason. I
- 1:14:16Speaker 23: think we have a vision for each guy. That's really
- 1:14:21Speaker 23: what we try to do and then go from there
- 1:14:23Speaker 23: and look through the claims.
- 1:14:25Speaker 5: I appreciate the process and.
- 1:14:27Speaker 23: The hard work that everybody had and Elliot and Ryan
- 1:14:30Speaker 23: and Elliot's staff and the coaches to all help and
- 1:14:34Speaker 23: try to identify guys that we could potentially add in
- 1:14:38Speaker 23: a short amount of time.
- 1:14:39Speaker 20: I'm curious what you saw from him throughout the summer
- 1:14:45Speaker 20: that kind of helped him or made it so he
- 1:14:48Speaker 20: earned that spot on the roster.
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: I think he continued to be coachable.
- 1:14:53Speaker 23: I think that that was something that he really improved
- 1:14:57Speaker 23: on to take the coaching.
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: And to understand you know, where he needed to improve.
- 1:15:01Speaker 23: I think that, you know, just looking at special teams,
- 1:15:05Speaker 23: I think that that was something that, you know, he
- 1:15:08Speaker 23: improved at, you know, be able to be a rookie
- 1:15:10Speaker 23: to play on the punt team, to go down there
- 1:15:12Speaker 23: and make a nice tackle in open field and, you know,
- 1:15:16Speaker 23: cover kicks, you know, do all these things that, you know,
- 1:15:20Speaker 23: was really different from the practices to the first game,
- 1:15:23Speaker 23: but then I felt like he improved from the first
- 1:15:25Speaker 23: game to the third game. I think it was a,
- 1:15:28Speaker 23: It was eye-opening for some of these guys just on
- 1:15:31Speaker 23: special teams from practices to the first game. So that
- 1:15:35Speaker 23: was always– I think that's the best thing that I
- 1:15:37Speaker 23: could say is that they got better through each of
- 1:15:40Speaker 23: those games.
- 1:15:41Speaker 5: Thanks, guys.

- 1:18:34Speaker 1: On to Seattle.
- 1:18:35Speaker 6: Well, and I would say, Mike, you, I think, had
- 1:18:38Speaker 6: the whole roster breakdown from, you know, the first part
- 1:18:42Speaker 6: of the show.
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:18:43Speaker 6: I mean, I think there was a real eye towards
- 1:18:45Speaker 6: special teams and finding some guys that had some experience
- 1:18:49Speaker 6: in the league playing.
- 1:18:50Speaker 4: On special teams.
- 1:18:51Speaker 6: They did have a big roster turnover, so there's a
- 1:18:54Speaker 6: lot of young guys that haven't really experienced it yet.
- 1:18:57Speaker 4: I think that had a lot to do with some
- 1:18:58Speaker 4: of the mixing and matching.
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: Seems like things are a little bit still in motion, too.
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: We'll see how things land over the next couple days.
- 1:19:06Speaker 5: Yep. Okay. Okay.
- 1:19:08Speaker 4: Do you have anything else?
- 1:19:09Speaker 5: No.
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: You're usually good at reading between the lines.
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: No, I thought there was some good coach answers. Are
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: you ready? We have up until Wednesday. Next Wednesday to
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: be ready.
- 1:19:18Speaker 6: We're just trying to get the quarterback center exchange.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: Speaking of which, Bill Belichick, 1-0.
- 1:19:25Speaker 15: 1-0.
- 1:19:25Speaker 5: UNC.
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: Classic.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: I did not see that coming. I was actually at
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: Anejo in Hyannis during that game, but I was in
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: the background.
- 1:19:35Speaker 6: It was a miserably bad football game between two bad teams.
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: I kept looking up, and I was like 15 to 10.
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: I thought they scored.
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: What happened?
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: They go for another four down.
- 1:19:44Speaker 6: They just kept going for four downs instead of just
- 1:19:46Speaker 6: kicking field goals that win games.
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: Good for him.
- 1:19:54Speaker 4: I could feel the love, Freddie.
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: Patty's been holding on throughout all that. What's up, Patty?
- 1:19:59Speaker 26: We've got to do the fresh take.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: Oh, we got to do the fresh take. Sorry. Oh, Paul.
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: Do you have a fresh take?
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: Hold on, Patty. Oh, here it is. Legal Seafoods is
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: giving fans a true taste of Boston this season as
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: the official seafood restaurant of the New England Patriots. Pre-game
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: or post-game, get the seafood you love at the local
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: restaurant today. LegalSeafoods.com. So, Paul, what is your fresh take?
- 1:20:26Speaker 6: So my fresh take is going to be a little
- 1:20:28Speaker 6: bit fresher this week than it was last week.
- 1:20:30Speaker 4: Christian Gonzalez is going to sign soon.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: That's my fresh take.
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: You've changed.
- 1:20:35Speaker 6: No, well, last Tuesday, my fresh take was I thought
- 1:20:39Speaker 6: it was imminent. And then I heard from all the
- 1:20:41Speaker 6: parties involved, Elliot Wolfe and Ryan Cowden and Christian Gonzalez himself,
- 1:20:45Speaker 6: and it wasn't imminent. A week later, he still hasn't
- 1:20:49Speaker 6: signed any extension yet. I am looking at some of
- 1:20:52Speaker 6: the stuff that we talked about, though, that Fred mentioned,
- 1:20:54Speaker 6: you know, his trainer going on one of my shows
- 1:20:58Speaker 6: talking about it. I think Daniel Jeremiah had a comment
- 1:21:01Speaker 6: that sort of led.
- 1:21:03Speaker 4: I think it's close.
- 1:21:04Speaker 6: I think these things sometimes can be closer, but there's
- 1:21:09Speaker 6: some language in the contract. So my fresh take this
- 1:21:12Speaker 6: week is that I messed up last week. I'm sorry
- 1:21:16Speaker 6: I was wrong. But this week it's going to happen.
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: They don't want that hanging.
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: Over their heads. From your mouth to God's ears. Heading
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: into the opener.
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: If you've got to pick a day, what day? If
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: it happens, what day?
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: Saturday.
- 1:21:30Speaker 5: Saturday?
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: Okay. I'll go with Saturday.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: Go Friday.
- 1:21:35Speaker 5: Friday.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: It's an off day.
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: Friday news, though?
- 1:21:38Speaker 4: Quaker State.
- 1:21:41Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: Patty, you there?
- 1:21:44Speaker 5: Patty?
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: Go on. He's gone. All right. Let's go to Eldred,
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: North Carolina. What's up, Eldred?
- 1:21:52Speaker 5: Hey, fellas.
- 1:21:53Speaker 22: How y'all doing?
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: Doing good.
- 1:21:54Speaker 22: I'm at the dock getting unloaded, but we're below the horn,
- 1:21:57Speaker 22: but I think I have everybody jumping.
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: Yeah, you don't want to do that while you're parked.
- 1:22:02Speaker 22: You know, understand how you feel. And like I said,
- 1:22:07Speaker 22: you can't get everything, but you can get something. But
- 1:22:10Speaker 22: I can see his point. You're paying out a bunch
- 1:22:12Speaker 22: of million dollars to 30-year-olds or whatever that's coming to
- 1:22:16Speaker 22: help the team some. But your words are develop, draft, develop,
- 1:22:23Speaker 22: and pay.
- 1:22:24Speaker 12: You got two of them.
- 1:22:26Speaker 22: That's May and him. And you don't want to pay Gonzalez?
- 1:22:30Speaker 22: You know, if whatever they're saying is true, I think
- 1:22:33Speaker 22: you did wrong. And if you go in there and
- 1:22:35Speaker 22: get embarrassed on Wednesday night because you don't have him,
- 1:22:38Speaker 22: and Seattle get paid for other guys, and they're in
- 1:22:41Speaker 22: a turmoil meeting, I think that's dead wrong, too.
- 1:22:44Speaker 12: So pay the guy.
- 1:22:45Speaker 22: Come to some kind of agreement, and if you trade them,
- 1:22:48Speaker 22: they still look bad on you. And I'm talking to
- 1:22:51Speaker 22: Kraft and Wolf. And other than that, you know, where
- 1:22:55Speaker 22: things going? I did say 14-3. Right now I'm going
- 1:22:58Speaker 22: to rescind. If they don't have guns, though.
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: Okay. Well, I mean, you know, he is under contract.
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: So even if they don't sign him, theoretically he's going
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: to play. But we'll see.
- 1:23:12Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: Hey, Fred, one.
- 1:23:15Speaker 22: Of your colleagues said the same thing, but he threw this.
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: Back at him.
- 1:23:19Speaker 22: Even though you said you got him on the contract,
- 1:23:22Speaker 22: the owners and the players came to a meeting the
- 1:23:25Speaker 22: three years that you agreed to pay the player. You
- 1:23:28Speaker 22: agreed to that. That's in the agreement.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: Okay?
- 1:23:31Speaker 22: So you still got to honor it. That's the way
- 1:23:34Speaker 22: I look at it.
- 1:23:35Speaker 4: Fred's not suggesting, you know, Eldred, Fred's not saying that
- 1:23:39Speaker 4: he's out of wine and looking for a contract extension.
- 1:23:41Speaker 4: I think you think he deserves.
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: A contract extension. I'm just saying that if things don't
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: work out, he's still under contract.
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: Yeah, that's all. That's all.
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: I'd be doing what he's doing.
- 1:23:51Speaker 4: We understand.
- 1:23:52Speaker 6: This is why we're sort of on the player's side
- 1:23:55Speaker 6: in this. I mean, I think he's done everything that
- 1:23:57Speaker 6: you've asked him to do. He's three years in, and
- 1:23:58Speaker 6: this is what the rules tell you.
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: I think in his draft class, like, ten of the
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: guys in the first round have already signed. Step or three.
- 1:24:06Speaker 22: Step or three of them. Him, the quarter, and the quarterback.
- 1:24:09Speaker 22: You know, one of the quarterbacks. But, you know, he's
- 1:24:11Speaker 22: the best of all of them. That's what I really
- 1:24:15Speaker 22: got to gripe about, you know, because– I don't think
- 1:24:20Speaker 22: Davis or them other little runs that we saw against
- 1:24:23Speaker 22: Cleveland can run with Jay at the end.
- 1:24:26Speaker 17: Just stay with him.
- 1:24:27Speaker 22: So, you know, if you want to get embarrassed, I'd
- 1:24:29Speaker 22: rather have a guy that's ready to play than a
- 1:24:32Speaker 22: guy that's pissed off by the contract and don't play.
- 1:24:35Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: See what I'm saying?
- 1:24:36Speaker 4: I think we're all in agreement.
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: That's the best of both worlds.
- 1:24:38Speaker 4: Yeah, we're all in agreement. You want everybody happy.
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: Kumbaya.
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: Thanks, Alfred.
- 1:24:44Speaker 4: He brought up one small thing, Mike. I'm sorry.
- 1:24:47Speaker 5: Just.
- 1:24:48Speaker 6: And I hadn't really thought of it in those terms yet,
- 1:24:50Speaker 6: but let's say that they don't sign the extension. And
- 1:24:55Speaker 6: let's say that that is a little bit of a problem.
- 1:24:58Speaker 6: And not just with Christian Gonzalez, but maybe there's a
- 1:25:00Speaker 6: couple of other guys that are like, why? Why do
- 1:25:04Speaker 6: we not sign him? And then they look, and then
- 1:25:06Speaker 6: it doesn't really go well next Wednesday. And Seattle takes
- 1:25:12Speaker 6: him to the woodshed. Worst case scenario. That could be
- 1:25:16Speaker 6: a thing. This is what happened. They re-signed JSN. They
- 1:25:20Speaker 6: re-signed Witherspoon. They re-signed Leonard Wendt. They took care of
- 1:25:23Speaker 6: their guys and look at how much better off they
- 1:25:25Speaker 6: are than us. They just killed us because they're happy.
- 1:25:29Speaker 6: You know what I mean?
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: It may not be true, but the narrative would be that.
- 1:25:35Speaker 6: It wouldn't be a foolish narrative. That could be something
- 1:25:39Speaker 6: that's on some veteran's mind. Remember when going way in
- 1:25:44Speaker 6: the way back machine when they released lawyer Malloy right
- 1:25:47Speaker 6: on the eve of the season and, and Brady among
- 1:25:50Speaker 6: many veterans, they were pissed off and they got blasted.
- 1:25:55Speaker 6: Now they were mature enough to overcome that. And they responded, um,
- 1:26:00Speaker 6: with a little help from Tom Jackson. If you recall
- 1:26:02Speaker 6: the next week, they hit their coach. Um, and that
- 1:26:04Speaker 6: got them, you know, sort of refocused and remotivated.
- 1:26:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: But there's no guarantees, you know? That would be a
- 1:26:11Speaker 4: bad sort of way to kick off the season. I
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: stepped on you. You were going to.
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: No, it's okay. I had kind of a different direction.
- 1:26:17Speaker 13: I just.
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: I've seen enough negotiations happen over the course of my
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: life to know that everything's a negotiation. And I guess
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: what I just can't quite... What I don't ever quite
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: understand is just the outrage directed at ownership to just
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: give him whatever he wants. You know, I just... Like,
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: I get it. You want... it to be a fair
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: deal and everybody's happy with it. But, you know, and
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: I'm not saying, and I'm not judging either side. Like,
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: we don't know what's in the.
- 1:26:42Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: But that's the problem. We don't know what Gonzalez is
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: asking for. The loudest people are just like, just give
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: him what he wants. Just give him whatever he wants.
- 1:26:47Speaker 4: I would never say just give anybody whatever they want. Like,
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: I would never say that.
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: But that's an exaggeration. But that's like the tone I
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: get from a lot of the fans that... You know,
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: and I get that they're frustrated. And at the end
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: of the day, they just want their player to be
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: playing for their team and to be happy. But I
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: just never get that outrage at either side because you
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: don't know.
- 1:27:03Speaker 6: What I would say is, and I'm just going to
- 1:27:06Speaker 6: use round numbers just to make it easier. Like, if
- 1:27:09Speaker 6: it's going to take $ 100 million in guaranteed money to
- 1:27:14Speaker 6: sign him, that's what he wants. So that's, you know,
- 1:27:17Speaker 6: like it's $ 101 million for Witherspoon. So that's what.
- 1:27:19Speaker 4: It takes to sign him. I would say give it
- 1:27:21Speaker 4: to him. But really give it to him. Don't put
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: it in the forms of these random option bonuses down
- 1:27:28Speaker 4: the road. Give it to him the way everybody else
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: gets it. Don't make him have to have per-game roster bonuses.
- 1:27:37Speaker 4: That would be the only thing I'm saying. But I
- 1:27:39Speaker 4: would never say, oh, just give every player whatever they want.
- 1:27:43Speaker 4: That's no way to run a business. You can't do
- 1:27:44Speaker 4: it that way.
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:27:45Speaker 4: $ 100 million will get it done. We'll give it $ 200 million. No.
- 1:27:51Speaker 6: Teams aren't successful doing it that way either.
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: That's why I just.
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: Everything's a negotiation.
- 1:27:57Speaker 4: Everything's a negotiation.
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: And that's talking in the press. And you've seen these
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: things all the time. But to become so entrenched on
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: one side, it's like, well, it could all work out.
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: And it could be a great deal for both sides.
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: Do you feel like people are entrenched on one side
- 1:28:08Speaker 4: in this?
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: Well, I feel like people are generally entrenched on a
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: side everywhere these days.
- 1:28:13Speaker 6: I've been really surprised with how many people... I hear
- 1:28:17Speaker 6: on my shows, call in. These are not the people
- 1:28:20Speaker 6: on the shows. These are people calling in that are anti-Gonzalez.
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd say it's about 30 percent. I think 70
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: percent in favor.
- 1:28:28Speaker 4: I wouldn't think, yeah, I would probably agree with your numbers, Freddie.
- 1:28:32Speaker 6: I can't believe there are anybody that are really, like,
- 1:28:35Speaker 6: based on the way that Gonzalez, you know, he hasn't really.
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: Spouted off.
- 1:28:42Speaker 6: He showed up for work. Yes, he took the joint
- 1:28:47Speaker 6: practices off. But that's not about these people. That didn't
- 1:28:52Speaker 6: have anything to do with the people that are saying
- 1:28:53Speaker 6: don't pay.
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: I think that one report, and I don't think it's true,
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: but I think it was one of your guys, Bedard,
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: about the 18% he was asking for of the cap.
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: And that came out to like $ 50 million.
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: Like a floating, he always gets a percentage of the cap.
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: Yeah, something like that.
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: I'm not familiar with that report.
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: And I think people took that and said, oh, that's ridiculous.
- 1:29:13Speaker 6: But I've heard people talk about sort of the counter
- 1:29:16Speaker 6: to what Eldred was just saying, he's under contract. In
- 1:29:23Speaker 6: my business, if I was under contract, you don't get it.
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: You don't understand.
- 1:29:27Speaker 6: This is a collectively bargained item. The owners were sick
- 1:29:32Speaker 6: and tired of paying rookies astronomical.
- 1:29:35Speaker 4: Salaries before they had done anything.
- 1:29:37Speaker 6: So they got a rookie wage scale, which I think
- 1:29:40Speaker 6: and again, I'm not always anti owner. I think that
- 1:29:43Speaker 6: was a brilliant and much needed alteration to the CBA.
- 1:29:48Speaker 6: Like there was ridiculous the amount of money the rookies
- 1:29:51Speaker 6: were making before they ever played it down. So now
- 1:29:53Speaker 6: it's more in line with what you deserve. The flip
- 1:29:57Speaker 6: side of that is, now let me get out of
- 1:29:59Speaker 6: these rookie contracts.
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: After year three. After I've proven myself.
- 1:30:03Speaker 6: I've proven myself, and I've outperformed my contract, so let
- 1:30:06Speaker 6: me pay for it. Don't make me pay five years
- 1:30:09Speaker 6: before I can renegotiate my contract and actually cash in. Because,
- 1:30:13Speaker 6: as you know, in that league, five years is not
- 1:30:15Speaker 6: like the other leagues. Five years is a long time
- 1:30:17Speaker 6: in the NFL.
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: Every game could be your last in that league.
- 1:30:22Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: Good stuff. Let's see, Anthony, a quick question. He wants
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: to know, what's the deal with Schooler? What's his status?
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: He's on NFI.
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: That's a great question.
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: Some kind of injury training, probably, during the summer that
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: he came back and he wasn't able to participate, so
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: he was put on PUP and rolled right over into NFI, PUP,
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: so he's out at least the first four.
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: He's on NFI, not PUP.
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: So, yeah, he's out the first four games, at least.
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: We don't know what the injury is. Tom, you know,
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: working out a little bit on the lower field, it
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: didn't seem like he was in traction or anything, but Um,
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: no idea.
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: And I do wonder, um, yeah, I mean, I wonder what,
- 1:30:59Speaker 4: what happened, but whatever.
- 1:31:00Speaker 6: And, and if I, um, sort of indicates he got
- 1:31:03Speaker 6: injured doing something that wasn't Patriots.
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: Related, wasn't a team activity.
- 1:31:08Speaker 6: Um, I don't know if it was like workout related.
- 1:31:12Speaker 6: I don't know if it was doing something else. I
- 1:31:13Speaker 6: have no idea, but it's, you know, whatever it's going
- 1:31:17Speaker 6: to cost them at least the first four games.
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: Uh, let's see, uh, Jeffrey in Canada, uh, I know
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: Vrabel said it, but I'm tired of hearing about it. Depth.
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: No depth. Lack of depth. Depth is a huge concern.
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: Sounds like a media creation because they have nothing bad
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: to say about the team. NFL is not a league
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: of depth. It's shared revenue, salary cap, equal opportunity to improve,
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: which means most teams are happy if they have 30
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: NFL-level players on their team, which they call the ones.
- 1:31:46Speaker 4: Patriots would be thrilled with 30.
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: Unless you're the 26 Dolphins.
- 1:31:50Speaker 7: Ha-ha.
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: If major players get hurt, it's going to be a problem.
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: But that's the case for all 32 teams, not just
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: the Patriots. The media feel the need to try to
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: ruin our enjoyment of the team, which two years ago
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: might have only had 15 NFL-level players on a 3-14 record.
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: Buzz off, Boston media. Give me sunshine.com.
- 1:32:14Speaker 5: Well, I don't know.
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: We've been kind of talking about that ourselves.
- 1:32:15Speaker 6: What a tour de force of an email right there.
- 1:32:17Speaker 6: I know Frabel said it, but this is a media creation.
- 1:32:21Speaker 6: That's how we entered into that. It's the media's fault
- 1:32:25Speaker 6: that the head coach lamented the lack of depth on
- 1:32:27Speaker 6: his team. And the Patriots would be thrilled with 30
- 1:32:30Speaker 6: NFL caliber players, by the way.
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: You know, just the bigger concern for me, and it's
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: like you sit here at this point where you get
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: to cut down day, day we've been circling, and all
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: of a sudden it's, you're seeing some of the flaws
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: with the team building process.
- 1:32:44Speaker 4: Now it's not ideal. What do you say? 10, we're
- 1:32:46Speaker 4: going to have 10 newcomers.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: That's not ideal faces. And you know, it's just, I mean,
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: I like to look at it as the draft. You know,
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: I like to look at, this isn't just your depth
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: for this season and guys who aren't going to play.
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: This is first of all, guys who are going to
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: potentially be thrust into roles because people get hurt. That's
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: the most obvious one, but it's also about the longterm
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: development of your team. And there's a bunch of free
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: agents next year. So this team's going to turn over significantly.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: Who are you going to turn it over to? Not
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: a bunch of, you know, rookies from 2024 that you
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: feel like, oh, wow, they're coming into their.
- 1:33:16Speaker 4: Prime right now.
- 1:33:18Speaker 6: This is a product of 21, 22, 23, 24 drafts. Like,
- 1:33:24Speaker 6: that's why Mike Vrabel said what he said after the
- 1:33:26Speaker 6: Philadelphia game. And it's not pointing the finger and blaming
- 1:33:31Speaker 6: anything or anybody, but the fact of the matter is
- 1:33:35Speaker 6: your backups should be products of those drafts. And I
- 1:33:41Speaker 6: don't have them all right in front of me right now,
- 1:33:43Speaker 6: but I want to say there's seven players who were
- 1:33:46Speaker 6: drafted from 2020 to 2026. Well, 2025, sorry. The 26
- 1:33:52Speaker 6: draft is obviously most of them, if not all of them,
- 1:33:55Speaker 6: are still here. But 2020 to 2025, they're down to
- 1:34:00Speaker 6: like seven players. Like Michael Wenu, Christian Gonzalez, Marcus Jones.
- 1:34:05Speaker 6: They're not that many.
- 1:34:07Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:34:08Speaker 4: They're not that many.
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: And what's the average for a team in a five-year
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: or six-year span of draft to have still on your team?
- 1:34:14Speaker 4: I don't have that off the top of my head.
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: I think you want to get two players every year.
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: I think that's the bare minimum. Get two players, guys
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: that can play and they want to keep around.
- 1:34:22Speaker 4: So that would be 12. But that would be different.
- 1:34:25Speaker 4: So you have half of that.
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:34:27Speaker 6: But I would also say you have two players that
- 1:34:31Speaker 6: you feel really good about. You shouldn't need to be
- 1:34:35Speaker 6: hitting the waiver wire to fill out your special teams
- 1:34:37Speaker 6: because the 90 OBIs of the world that you draft
- 1:34:40Speaker 6: in the fifth and sixth round should be your special
- 1:34:42Speaker 6: teams players.
- 1:34:43Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:34:43Speaker 4: Do you know what I mean?
- 1:34:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:34:45Speaker 4: That's what you hope for.
- 1:34:46Speaker 6: You don't want to necessarily have to pick at other teams'
- 1:34:48Speaker 6: rosters to find these guys. You know, your backup offensive
- 1:34:53Speaker 6: linemen should be guys that you drafted in the sixth round.
- 1:34:57Speaker 5: Not.
- 1:34:58Speaker 6: Guys that you have to trade for on the day
- 1:35:00Speaker 6: of the cut down.
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: You have those guys.
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: You look at the receiver group where that to me
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: is like a model where you have superstar, a solid veteran,
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: a kid you drafted, an undrafted kid you're developing. You
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: kind of have a hierarchy that can hopefully help the
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: team be healthy in the long term. It's not just
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: this year. It's about the future.
- 1:35:19Speaker 6: I'm with Mike on this. Mike is really adamant with
- 1:35:21Speaker 6: the draft. The draft and the defense are Mike's big things.
- 1:35:26Speaker 6: But he ain't wrong on either one.
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: Just look back. What was the draft? It was like
- 1:35:31Speaker 4: maybe four drafts ago. It was Jake Andrews, Antonio Mafi,
- 1:35:35Speaker 4: and City So. They were all day three offensive linemen.
- 1:35:39Speaker 4: None of them are here anymore. It wasn't that. Was
- 1:35:42Speaker 4: it three drafts, four drafts ago? It wasn't that long ago.
- 1:35:46Speaker 6: Now, you did get Michael Wenu in the 2020 draft
- 1:35:51Speaker 6: in the sixth round. Great pick, obviously. But I'm not
- 1:35:54Speaker 6: even asking you to do that all the time. That's hard.
- 1:35:57Speaker 6: To get a front-line starting caliber player in day three
- 1:36:02Speaker 6: is hard. But shouldn't you be able to get a
- 1:36:04Speaker 6: Ben Brown type in the sixth round that can ably
- 1:36:08Speaker 6: back someone up?
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: David in Rochester wants to stump the grump. He wants
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: to earn a t-shirt. So here's the question. It's just one.
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: How many times was John Elway named a first team
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: AP All-Pro selection?
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: No idea.
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: No idea.
- 1:36:26Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: He stumped you then. So the answer is zero. He
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: was the second team AP All-Pro three times.
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: Stumped.
- 1:36:35Speaker 4: So he was always behind Marino?
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: Probably. Yeah. Let's see.
- 1:36:43Speaker 4: Kelly? Esiason? I mean, it's kind of.
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: Rick in Riverside, Rhode Island, is another person talking about depth.
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: He said, I took a look at the 2020 to
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: 2024 draft classes, and they weren't very good. Rabel saying
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: they lack depth now has diminished my excitement for the season.
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: I think the offense.
- 1:37:04Speaker 4: He's the anti, the last guy.
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: I think the offense has improved and will do well,
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: but the defense now has me concerned, especially on the edge.
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: Any recommendations to help me get excited for the defense
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: and a successful season? Deuce?
- 1:37:18Speaker 5: Yeah, just.
- 1:37:19Speaker 4: He calls on Deuce for the defense.
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: Kevin Byard, Craig Woodson. I know. Well, that's what's funny
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: about all this stuff. It's just like the season you
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: get A.J. Brown after... It feels like decades of talking
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: about getting him. You finally get the guy. He looks good.
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: He's been healthy. He's shown a good connection. And we're
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: flipped to worrying about that. Oh, well, we don't have
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: a backup tight end.
- 1:37:41Speaker 6: The worry is on the defense. I don't think there's
- 1:37:45Speaker 6: a lot of concern about offense. I think they feel
- 1:37:47Speaker 6: like they have a good offense.
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: When you're averaging 32 points a game.
- 1:37:50Speaker 4: And I'm with you, Fred. How many times have I
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: said that I watched Tom Brady bludgeon teams to death?
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: A good defense is a good offense.
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: And I think that they can do that this year.
- 1:38:00Speaker 6: I think they have a chance to be like 30
- 1:38:03Speaker 6: a game.
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: I am concerned about the defense long term. I just
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: I feel like they haven't done enough in recent years.
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: And that's a combination of issues. But to an extent,
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: I feel a little bit like it's withering on the vine.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: And you did. some moves the last couple of years.
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: And now you're just, just tread water for us guys.
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: Just tread water for us. I know Gonzalez is a
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: big piece of that, but I just think this defense
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: starting soon, they got to start adding players. I mean,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: I spent all off season talking about the edge and
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: how great the edge class was. And here's the free
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: agent edge guys that they could do. And you could
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: bring back chase on. And somehow we get right now
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: to cut down day. And you're like, crap, we barely
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: have one guy. You know, we barely have one guy
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: at that position that we really believe in and feel
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: good about. and it's just a tough way to live.
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: At some point, they're going to have to start investing
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: more in the defense, and it can't all just be
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: about surrounding Drake May, which I like, but they're going
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: to have to give some attention to the defense next year.
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: Ryan in Connecticut, two questions about captains, and we do
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: know that Rabel will be announcing the captains this afternoon.
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: Who do you think will be named captains this year?
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: Any potential surprises or notable snubs? And looking back at
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: past teams, were there any captain selections that really surprised
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: you Or any players you were surprised didn't get a
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: captain spot? I mean, we've had those conversations before, but
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: I forget what.
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: I bet Bayard and A.J.
- 1:39:26Speaker 5: Brown.
- 1:39:26Speaker 6: The only thing I would ever, ever say is it
- 1:39:29Speaker 6: would surprise me if the quarterback isn't a captain.
- 1:39:31Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:39:32Speaker 4: I couldn't care less who the captains are. That's for
- 1:39:34Speaker 4: you guys. Oh, wow. That's for you guys.
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: Oh, come on, Paul.
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: I'm going to say May, Henry, Brown.
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: Bayard.
- 1:39:41Speaker 4: Bayard.
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: And, geez, the Rams have like 14 captains.
- 1:39:44Speaker 4: Wouldn't Spillane be a captain?
- 1:39:46Speaker 5: Spillane. Sure.
- 1:39:48Speaker 6: And some rant, you know, is Schooler going to not
- 1:39:50Speaker 6: give you a captain because he's on NFI?
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: You need a special teams guy, right?
- 1:39:53Speaker 4: You need leaders.
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: Who's it going to be?
- 1:39:55Speaker 6: I don't care if they have a C on their
- 1:39:57Speaker 6: chest or not. You need good leadership. That's for the team.
- 1:40:02Speaker 6: I think it's vitally important for the team. I don't
- 1:40:04Speaker 6: care who they are as long as they have them.
- 1:40:08Speaker 6: They have some guys that lead.
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: That's why we're mad at the Bruins. They don't have
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: a captain.
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: They just don't have one. Still?
- 1:40:13Speaker 3: No.
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: They figured it out. Speaking of Boston sports teams, how
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: about that Red Sox.
- 1:40:18Speaker 4: Game last night? What's the bigger problem for the Bruins?
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: They don't have the talent for that.
- 1:40:22Speaker 6: The fact that Pasternak is not necessarily captain worthy or
- 1:40:26Speaker 6: the fact that they're just not very good at hockey.
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: I have to say B.
- 1:40:29Speaker 4: That's why I don't really care.
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: Like McAvoy?
- 1:40:32Speaker 4: He's good.
- 1:40:33Speaker 9: He's fine.
- 1:40:34Speaker 5: He's good.
- 1:40:36Speaker 4: Not great.
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: He's not very boring.
- 1:40:38Speaker 4: Swimming? He's good.
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: I mean, they're the perfect example of a team when
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: you have a good goalie and a good goal scorer,
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: and that's kind of it, you know?
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: It's good enough to win some regular season games, get
- 1:40:48Speaker 4: in the playoffs, and get smoked.
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: How about those Red Sox?
- 1:40:52Speaker 4: How about your Red Sox, Freddie?
- 1:40:54Speaker 6: That was fun. I've said this a lot to Freddie
- 1:40:57Speaker 6: on and off the air. He's the only one that believed.
- 1:41:01Speaker 6: He's the only one that kept watching.
- 1:41:02Speaker 4: You were the only one.
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: No. I am a little worried, though. Pitching's starting to
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: falter a little bit.
- 1:41:09Speaker 6: At some point, you have to be concerned that you're
- 1:41:11Speaker 6: going to sort of come back to earth, right? Like, well,
- 1:41:14Speaker 6: you know, you're 10 and 12 in your last 22 games.
- 1:41:17Speaker 6: You know, no, they're going to be 550. They're going
- 1:41:20Speaker 6: to be.
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: What?
- 1:41:24Speaker 6: As I said, they were 10 and 12 in their
- 1:41:25Speaker 6: last 22 games before that comeback last night. So now
- 1:41:28Speaker 6: they're 11 and 12 in the last 23.
- 1:41:31Speaker 4: That to me is what they are.
- 1:41:33Speaker 6: Now, for two months, they played completely out of their
- 1:41:35Speaker 6: minds and played like 800 baseball games.
- 1:41:37Speaker 4: So that's good enough to get in the playoffs.
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: Yeah. They're in.
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: I mean, is it 10 years? I looked last night.
- 1:41:42Speaker 4: Oh, that's not 10 years.
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: Where they got a five-game lead? They got a five-game lead,
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: I think.
- 1:41:45Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: Yeah, they only have like 20-some-odd games left.
- 1:41:47Speaker 4: Yeah, like they'd have to completely and utterly collapse.
- 1:41:50Speaker 6: I don't have any faith in them beating anybody any
- 1:41:52Speaker 6: good in the playoff.
- 1:41:53Speaker 4: Series, but who cares?
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: But it's fun to watch. I like playoff baseball.
- 1:41:56Speaker 21: Who cares?
- 1:41:56Speaker 4: That was the most unbelievable July and August that I
- 1:42:00Speaker 4: can ever remember.
- 1:42:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: Roman Anthony's back, and he's hitting... Trevor Story had two
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: hits last night that were meaningful.
- 1:42:06Speaker 4: Two hits in the Sunday game, too.
- 1:42:08Speaker 2: Yeah, meaningful hits.
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: Getting the bats back.
- 1:42:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:42:11Speaker 6: Only the Red Sox could lose a game 16-1 and
- 1:42:14Speaker 6: get screwed by the ump.
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: By the way, I'm off Wilson Contreras.
- 1:42:18Speaker 4: Are you really?
- 1:42:19Speaker 11: Oh.
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: Troublemaker. Oh.
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: He's always involved in something.
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:42:23Speaker 4: A lot of drama.
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: Always involved in something.
- 1:42:26Speaker 5: You know?
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: The latest thing is now the backswing hitting catchers. Two
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: games in a row he hit catchers. You don't need
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: to do that. He kicked the guy at first base.
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: There's always something.
- 1:42:40Speaker 4: I didn't even know about half of this stuff. He's
- 1:42:45Speaker 4: the only one who watches.
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: I love his production. He's cooled off a little lately.
- 1:42:51Speaker 4: He's fine. There's a lot of drama with him.
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: He's a very emotional guy. And he loses his cool.
- 1:43:00Speaker 4: He does lose his cool.
- 1:43:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: I always think about Fred, like, because I'll randomly flip
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: on Red Sox games and, you know, watch an inning
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: or two here and there.
- 1:43:06Speaker 4: And you immediately text Fred, what did I miss the
- 1:43:08Speaker 4: last four innings?
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: And I'm in my head just imagining, like, Fred's already
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: been hunkered down since, like, the first pitch of the game.
- 1:43:13Speaker 6: Like, you click it on his full four innings, you
- 1:43:15Speaker 6: immediately text Fred, what did I miss the last four innings?
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: How did we get here?
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: He gets in his seat, like, you know, gets his hat.
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: Do you have a hat or anything?
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: No, they've been.
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: Great, though. I mean, most of these games I'm watching
- 1:43:25Speaker 2: in bed.
- 1:43:25Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:43:26Speaker 6: I've got to give, and you're going to make fun
- 1:43:28Speaker 6: of me.
- 1:43:28Speaker 4: I'm being dead serious.
- 1:43:30Speaker 6: I give a lot of credit to these guys, like
- 1:43:32Speaker 6: the Sieglers and the Monasterios, these guys that came up
- 1:43:35Speaker 6: from the minors.
- 1:43:37Speaker 4: Mickey Gasper now is out of his mind. These minor
- 1:43:40Speaker 4: league guys that just came up and carried the team.
- 1:43:44Speaker 4: I give them a lot of credit. It would have
- 1:43:46Speaker 4: been easy to just pack it up, but those guys
- 1:43:48Speaker 4: were fighting for their livelihoods. They're not major league players.
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: First base last night, two great picks.
- 1:43:53Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: It's a little bit like the Patriots season last year
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: where you just can't believe that they were as bad
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: as they were, and then they were back at a
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: Super Bowl again. It was remarkable. The worst team, you're like, oh,
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: my God, people lamenting how horrible they are, and then
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: they go on this crazy run. Are they a historically
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: great team? Probably not. I think in 20.
- 1:44:12Speaker 4: Years, there's going to be a 30 for 30 about
- 1:44:14Speaker 4: this team.
- 1:44:15Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:44:16Speaker 6: And people are going to say, I can't believe that
- 1:44:18Speaker 6: collection of players won that many games in such a
- 1:44:21Speaker 6: short period of time.
- 1:44:22Speaker 4: They won like 40 and 10. I know. Over a
- 1:44:24Speaker 4: 50-game span or something like that.
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: I kept saying, I said it to Roachie, too. I
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: always felt like you were in the Moneyball montage of
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: like that. That summer was like they're.
- 1:44:32Speaker 4: Playing the music and you're seeing the newspaper headlines of
- 1:44:34Speaker 4: them winning.
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: There's a huge difference.
- 1:44:37Speaker 6: Go and open up a baseball encyclopedia and look up
- 1:44:40Speaker 6: that A's team.
- 1:44:43Speaker 4: And compare it to this team.
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: Oh, you mean like the actual talent of the team? Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: I just meant like that.
- 1:44:50Speaker 4: It was just like this exciting. Tim Hudson, Barry Zito,
- 1:44:52Speaker 4: Mark Mulder.
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: No, I wasn't comparing the teams like talent-wise. I just
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: like the vibe.
- 1:44:58Speaker 3: Of the whole team.
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: They go on this crazy run. That team was stacked.
- 1:45:01Speaker 4: That A's team was loaded. This team. Not loaded.
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: Raffaella.
- 1:45:06Speaker 4: I like Raffaella.
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: He's turned into a really good player.
- 1:45:10Speaker 4: He's an all-star. I like Raffaella.
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: Roman Toney.
- 1:45:13Speaker 4: Well, you didn't even want him back.
- 1:45:14Speaker 2: Who said that?
- 1:45:15Speaker 5: You.
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: Shut him down.
- 1:45:17Speaker 4: You wanted him and Story. You just stay over there.
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: Stay out of the way. Story. Story, he's doing well,
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: although he had two defensive plays that almost cost them.
- 1:45:27Speaker 18: Almost.
- 1:45:27Speaker 2: Two bad throws. That Mickey Gasper bailed him out.
- 1:45:32Speaker 6: Mickey Gasper, 30-year-old journeyman from Bryant University.
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: He set some kind of record, too, I saw.
- 1:45:39Speaker 4: Yeah, he's hitting a home run every half-back.
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: In the month of July, he had the third highest... August. No, July.
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: One month, he had the highest one-month or third highest
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: behind Ted Williams and Barry Bonds. OPS.
- 1:45:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:45:59Speaker 2: Again.
- 1:46:00Speaker 4: Not sustainable.
- 1:46:02Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: Eddie's in New York.
- 1:46:03Speaker 4: Good for the Red Sox. Back to football. Fred was right.
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: What's up, Eddie?
- 1:46:07Speaker 17: Hey, how's it going, guys?
- 1:46:08Speaker 2: Hey, Eddie.
- 1:46:10Speaker 12: All right.
- 1:46:11Speaker 17: I have two questions. Number one, as you guys know,
- 1:46:15Speaker 17: I've called before over the same topic, but I'll mention
- 1:46:17Speaker 17: that again. I'm a big guy on the offensive line.
- 1:46:20Speaker 17: I know the Patriots have done a lot to address
- 1:46:23Speaker 17: the offensive line's needs. But with Austin Hooper leaving and
- 1:46:27Speaker 17: Reardon being a rookie, is he going to be a
- 1:46:30Speaker 17: catching tight end, or is he going to be left
- 1:46:33Speaker 17: there for run blocking and pass protection? That's number one.
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: I think the intention for him is to catch balls,
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: but go ahead.
- 1:46:41Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:46:42Speaker 16: Thanks for that. That's number one.
- 1:46:43Speaker 17: And number two, I'm looking at you guys live on
- 1:46:46Speaker 17: TV right now, and I really love this look. The
- 1:46:49Speaker 17: Lazy Boy couches.
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: Oh, they don't kick out.
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I wish they were. Okay, so you like this
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: better than the desk.
- 1:46:56Speaker 4: You don't have to sit in them.
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:46:57Speaker 17: Are we keeping this or are we going back to
- 1:46:59Speaker 17: the podium?
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: Early in the week. See, we have other shows and
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: things that we film in here, and they use this
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: to help Matt. We just go right into here. But
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: I think on Thursdays we'll be back at the desk.
- 1:47:13Speaker 5: Okay, okay.
- 1:47:13Speaker 17: I'm just saying I love this producer. Let's keep these
- 1:47:16Speaker 17: guys comfortable, okay?
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: Whatever they want, let's get them. Paul likes the desk
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: because he can take his pants off.
- 1:47:22Speaker 4: Also, my fat stomach doesn't hang out.
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: All right, Eddie. And, yeah, Raritan is a pass catcher.
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:47:28Speaker 2: That's what they want him to be.
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:47:31Speaker 13: Right?
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: Do I have that right?
- 1:47:32Speaker 4: You have that right, Freddie.
- 1:47:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: Mix him in a little bit, you know, get his
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: feet wet.
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: Throw him some um pat nagawam uh question for today
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: could you see crown over playing tight end in jumbo
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: packages over lomu at least to start the season my
- 1:47:50Speaker 2: idea that comes from is one crown over was a
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: converted tight end in college there may be more of
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: a level of comfortability with him doing it as opposed
- 1:47:58Speaker 2: to lomu and to the consensus reporting early in camp
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: was Loma was playing tight end and jumbo packages, but
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: I personally didn't hear much about him doing it after
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: the early portions of camp.
- 1:48:10Speaker 6: No, he did it every day in camp until they
- 1:48:13Speaker 6: no longer did it anymore, but no one else did it.
- 1:48:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:48:17Speaker 4: And I think Lomo was a much better athlete. I
- 1:48:19Speaker 4: think he has quicker feet.
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:48:21Speaker 6: Like, if you were going to ask someone to maybe
- 1:48:23Speaker 6: go in motion and make a block, I think that
- 1:48:25Speaker 6: would be more.
- 1:48:26Speaker 4: In Lomo's skill set.
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:48:28Speaker 4: Now, Crownover looks like he was built in a tackle factory.
- 1:48:31Speaker 4: I mean, the guy... Oh, he's huge.
- 1:48:32Speaker 6: Him and Marcus Bryant both look like prototypical tackles. I
- 1:48:35Speaker 6: don't know if either one of them can play, but.
- 1:48:38Speaker 16: So.
- 1:48:39Speaker 4: I would go with Lomu, but I don't know.
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: Here's an example of that 18% story affecting the narrative.
- 1:48:47Speaker 2: Tim A. from Phoenix writes in, I've seen reports... That
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: Gonzo's asking for 18% of the salary cap instead of
- 1:48:55Speaker 2: a hard number. Is that the language they are disagreeing about?
- 1:48:59Speaker 2: If that's true, what would you do? In my opinion,
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: no team would ever do that. No corner before now
- 1:49:04Speaker 2: or in the future can cover for eight seconds in
- 1:49:07Speaker 2: every play because you can't afford a pass rush.
- 1:49:10Speaker 4: Why would you not be able to afford a pass rush?
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: Because you're paying him 18% of your salary cap. That's
- 1:49:16Speaker 2: what he's saying. My daughter used money.
- 1:49:18Speaker 4: Who's the highest paid pass rusher they have now?
- 1:49:21Speaker 5: Right now?
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: Draymond Jones. Is it?
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:49:25Speaker 4: He's not making a lot of money.
- 1:49:29Speaker 2: My daughter used money from her first job to take
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: me to the Cardinals game in 2024. I took pictures
- 1:49:34Speaker 2: of two players, Gonzo and May. I love Gonzo, but
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: not at 18%. We are Patriots fans, not Gonzo fans.
- 1:49:42Speaker 4: I don't know where the 18% thing comes from. It
- 1:49:44Speaker 4: came from Bedard.
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: Or was it Curry? It was one of those guys.
- 1:49:48Speaker 4: I'll trust you.
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:49:49Speaker 6: I don't read it, but I don't even know what 18% means.
- 1:49:54Speaker 2: That's a lot.
- 1:49:55Speaker 4: But is that forever?
- 1:49:56Speaker 2: They did the math and he would be making over
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: $ 50 million a year.
- 1:49:59Speaker 4: Like in salary?
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:50:01Speaker 4: Then no.
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: Of course.
- 1:50:03Speaker 6: I just don't believe that he asked for $ 50 million
- 1:50:05Speaker 6: when the highest paid corner makes $ 33.
- 1:50:07Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: So that's why that report, I don't believe the report.
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: But people are believing the report. And I think that's
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: where your 30% on your shows come from. That's what
- 1:50:17Speaker 2: I'm saying.
- 1:50:18Speaker 6: I don't think it comes from that. I think people
- 1:50:20Speaker 6: think he's under contract. There's a lot of older callers
- 1:50:24Speaker 6: that call in and they don't believe in this renegotiation thing.
- 1:50:27Speaker 6: They believe he's under contract.
- 1:50:29Speaker 2: How long have they been watching football? I mean, this
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: has been going on for 30 years.
- 1:50:34Speaker 4: I know, and they don't believe in it.
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: It's like, you know, I don't believe in oxygen. I
- 1:50:39Speaker 2: just don't believe in it.
- 1:50:41Speaker 4: It's not the same thing. Andy, it's not the same.
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:50:46Speaker 2: I don't believe it. We don't need it.
- 1:50:48Speaker 4: We don't need it.
- 1:50:51Speaker 6: But I just hate the whole, like, if you gave
- 1:50:54Speaker 6: someone 18%, then you wouldn't, like, your quarterback's going to
- 1:50:57Speaker 6: make that.
- 1:50:57Speaker 5: No.
- 1:50:58Speaker 4: So now can you not afford a wide receiver for
- 1:51:00Speaker 4: him to throw to? Like, stop with that nonsense.
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: I think the math, over $ 50 million for a quarterback,
- 1:51:06Speaker 2: you know, 10 years from now that might be the case.
- 1:51:08Speaker 6: No, but you could afford whatever you want to afford.
- 1:51:10Speaker 4: You just have to find a way to structure it
- 1:51:12Speaker 4: so it fits in the cap.
- 1:51:13Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:51:13Speaker 4: That's not that hard.
- 1:51:17Speaker 2: Cash budget, Paul.
- 1:51:18Speaker 4: That is hard. Everybody's got a budget.
- 1:51:21Speaker 2: Destiny in Maryland writes in, how do you guys feel
- 1:51:25Speaker 2: about the vast majority of the starters sitting out the
- 1:51:27Speaker 2: entire preseason going up against the Seahawks week one without
- 1:51:30Speaker 2: any real game time practice? Well, they did too. I
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: understand the joint practices are probably more important, but do
- 1:51:37Speaker 2: you have any apprehension about that?
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: Not really. Some do.
- 1:51:42Speaker 2: I don't.
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: I just, I mean, you mentioned the Seahawks didn't really
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: play either. At a certain point, you just got to
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: start playing the real games that matter and figure out
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: what your actual team is. Now, there's, you know, value
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: for younger guys to get experience in the preseason, you know,
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: that kind of thing. But for the vast majority of
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: this team and their veterans, I don't think it was critical.
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: I mean, I go back to what Vrabel said. What
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: does he get, six snaps? Like, you know, it's not ideal,
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: you know, but at the same time, I don't think
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: it's going to matter when we get to December. We're
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: not going to say, If they just played in preseason,
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: they'd be in a better position now. I think they've
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: got to play a game. They've got to correct the mistakes.
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: They've got to go back and come here and open
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: up against Pittsburgh. My only hope is that the running
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: back change in Seattle will be a factor. They have
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: a new offensive coordinator, too. That will be a factor.
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: In other words, there's enough change over there that we're
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: not going to see a repeat of the Super Bowl. Well, yeah,
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: I mean, it might be Jadarian Price running through your
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: defense instead of Ken Walker, but I know what you're saying.
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: There are some tweaks on both sides.
- 1:52:43Speaker 6: And I get the whole preseason thing, and I would
- 1:52:46Speaker 6: just step back and say, in a perfect world, if
- 1:52:49Speaker 6: I could control everything, I would want my guys to
- 1:52:51Speaker 6: play a lot in the preseason to get ready for
- 1:52:53Speaker 6: the regular season.
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: If I could.
- 1:52:55Speaker 4: Somehow guarantee that everybody's going to be fine.
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:53:00Speaker 6: I can't have that guarantee. So, in my view... It's
- 1:53:04Speaker 6: kind of an all-or-nothing thing. I'm either going to play
- 1:53:08Speaker 6: them significantly so they can knock the rust off, get
- 1:53:10Speaker 6: used to being hit. Drake is comfortable with guys around
- 1:53:13Speaker 6: him taking hits. The defensive players are tackling guys to
- 1:53:17Speaker 6: the ground. The running backs are trying to break tackles.
- 1:53:20Speaker 6: So I've got to play a half or maybe even
- 1:53:22Speaker 6: a little more of a game to get that. I'm
- 1:53:25Speaker 6: not getting that in Mike's scenario anymore.
- 1:53:28Speaker 4: Of six plays.
- 1:53:30Speaker 6: What's the difference between Justin Herbert playing three plays in
- 1:53:33Speaker 6: a three and out and Drake May playing none?
- 1:53:36Speaker 10: Nothing.
- 1:53:37Speaker 6: He hasn't knocked any rust off. He's not in any
- 1:53:40Speaker 6: better shape. All you did was put him in harm's.
- 1:53:42Speaker 4: Way for three plays.
- 1:53:44Speaker 6: Again, if I could guarantee that everybody was healthy, I
- 1:53:48Speaker 6: would want to play. I don't think you can have
- 1:53:50Speaker 6: that guarantee. Well, you can't have that guarantee. Look at
- 1:53:53Speaker 6: all the offensive linemen the Patriots lost that were backups.
- 1:53:56Speaker 4: What if those were all starters?
- 1:53:58Speaker 6: What if you lost three starters in your offensive line
- 1:54:00Speaker 6: instead of Andrew Rupsch, Marcus Bryant, and Ben Brown?
- 1:54:05Speaker 4: What if it was Vera Tucker, Jared Wilson, and Will Campbell?
- 1:54:11Speaker 4: how would you feel?
- 1:54:12Speaker 6: They're like, what are we playing our starters in the
- 1:54:14Speaker 6: preseason for?
- 1:54:15Speaker 4: That's what everybody would say.
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: The other funny thing, too, is that the guys who
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: were actually playing this preseason were also terribly tackling in
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: that last game. You know, like, you would think, oh,
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: these guys are getting some run, like a lot of
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: those guys that played against Cleveland and played a lot,
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: and they couldn't tackle. What's it going to look like?
- 1:54:29Speaker 4: There's going to be some sloppiness. There always is at
- 1:54:32Speaker 4: the start of the regular season.
- 1:54:33Speaker 2: This is where that CBA in 2011, really, the players
- 1:54:35Speaker 2: kind of got hoodwinked because the refs, The owners were
- 1:54:41Speaker 2: all too happy to give up things, you know, in
- 1:54:45Speaker 2: the name of safety. They don't care about making training
- 1:54:48Speaker 2: camp more safe and all that and limiting the number
- 1:54:51Speaker 2: of pad days and all that stuff. But they traded
- 1:54:55Speaker 2: that away for money.
- 1:54:57Speaker 4: I mean, the Patriots were on pads a lot.
- 1:55:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:55:02Speaker 6: I think the physicality level of their training camp was
- 1:55:05Speaker 6: much higher than last year with Rabel.
- 1:55:07Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:55:08Speaker 6: I just don't think there's any way to replicate being
- 1:55:10Speaker 6: ready to play an NFL game without playing an NFL game.
- 1:55:13Speaker 2: So what do you do?
- 1:55:14Speaker 4: I think what Mike did.
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: Rip the Band-Aid off.
- 1:55:17Speaker 4: That's how I would do it if it were me
- 1:55:19Speaker 4: in charge.
- 1:55:20Speaker 2: I haven't really fleshed this out yet, but once they
- 1:55:24Speaker 2: do go to 18 games, which they will, what would
- 1:55:27Speaker 2: you say about making the first two games only worth.
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: Half a win?
- 1:55:32Speaker 3: No.
- 1:55:34Speaker 4: They're either games or they aren't.
- 1:55:36Speaker 5: No. No? No.
- 1:55:37Speaker 4: Why would you want to do that?
- 1:55:39Speaker 2: Because, you know, like maybe in that first two games,
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: I want to do some things. And if I lose
- 1:55:43Speaker 2: the game, okay, it's only, I only lost half a game.
- 1:55:46Speaker 4: You could sell me if you wanted to.
- 1:55:47Speaker 6: Adjust like the tiebreaker situation by saying like, let's add
- 1:55:52Speaker 6: a tiebreaker for, you know, the record from November on
- 1:55:57Speaker 6: is a tiebreaker as opposed to.
- 1:55:59Speaker 4: What happened in September.
- 1:56:01Speaker 2: But they got to do something.
- 1:56:02Speaker 4: Like you can't just make it a half a win.
- 1:56:05Speaker 2: To me, this is the only sport That you can't
- 1:56:08Speaker 2: play the sport to get ready. You know? When you're
- 1:56:13Speaker 2: not playing your starters, joint practice is not football yet
- 1:56:16Speaker 2: because you're not playing full speed and you're not tackling.
- 1:56:19Speaker 2: That's why they got rid of the Pro Bowl, by
- 1:56:21Speaker 2: the way. Because it's not football. It's not football. It's
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: patty cake. Football is a violent sport. I would just say...
- 1:56:29Speaker 2: And you can't get ready for violence unless you're violent.
- 1:56:33Speaker 10: Mike.
- 1:56:34Speaker 6: I don't have the answer to this question because I've
- 1:56:36Speaker 6: never played hockey. But how much, like, violence is there
- 1:56:39Speaker 6: in hockey practice? How much hitting is there?
- 1:56:42Speaker 2: Oh, but you don't tackle guys.
- 1:56:44Speaker 4: You check.
- 1:56:45Speaker 6: But there's a physicality that probably doesn't happen in practice
- 1:56:49Speaker 6: that all of a sudden you go into your first
- 1:56:50Speaker 6: game and it's a bit different.
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you go through the center ice with your
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: head down, you're going to get lit up in the game.
- 1:56:54Speaker 4: And they don't really.
- 1:56:55Speaker 6: I mean, they have a couple of exhibition games, but
- 1:56:57Speaker 6: the front line guys don't really play all that much.
- 1:57:01Speaker 4: Certainly in basketball, they do nothing in the preseason.
- 1:57:03Speaker 5: But they have a whole.
- 1:57:04Speaker 2: It's like, how many, they have like 15 games that
- 1:57:07Speaker 2: they play. In hockey? Yeah. They have like three. That's all?
- 1:57:11Speaker 4: Maybe four.
- 1:57:11Speaker 2: I don't know. I thought it was more than that.
- 1:57:13Speaker 4: They don't play a lot of games.
- 1:57:14Speaker 2: I thought they played more than that, but maybe I'm wrong.
- 1:57:17Speaker 2: But they play.
- 1:57:18Speaker 6: Like baseball is the only game to me that they
- 1:57:21Speaker 6: actually play the game and they play it for a
- 1:57:23Speaker 6: month and a half.
- 1:57:24Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:57:24Speaker 4: Like that is getting you ready.
- 1:57:26Speaker 2: But even, but I think the other sports you can,
- 1:57:29Speaker 2: you can play the game the way it's supposed to
- 1:57:31Speaker 2: be played.
- 1:57:32Speaker 4: You can't do that with football. I would say that hockey,
- 1:57:34Speaker 4: I mean, football is the least realistic. I agree with you.
- 1:57:38Speaker 4: Like you can't replicate tackling.
- 1:57:39Speaker 2: So how do we get guys ready to play football?
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: Jump in and play.
- 1:57:46Speaker 4: I don't know why all of a sudden it's an issue.
- 1:57:49Speaker 4: I just don't.
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: I don't know why all of a sudden it's a problem.
- 1:57:52Speaker 2: It's also an issue because it's a bad product in
- 1:57:55Speaker 2: the summer. It's just a bad product.
- 1:57:59Speaker 5: It's been a bad product.
- 1:58:01Speaker 2: I know. I know. So how do we make it better?
- 1:58:03Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:58:04Speaker 4: Eliminate them.
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: By having 18 games, though, the impact of an individual
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: early season game is less. I mean, I like what
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: Paul's talking about, but at the end of the day.
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: I didn't even think of that.
- 1:58:15Speaker 4: The more games you add, the less importance you're putting
- 1:58:18Speaker 4: on them.
- 1:58:18Speaker 2: No, that's true.
- 1:58:19Speaker 4: That's a good point that Mike made.
- 1:58:20Speaker 12: Yep. Yep.
- 1:58:21Speaker 4: Good job, Mike. You're having a good show.
- 1:58:23Speaker 2: George and Marilyn, we've got to actually shoot. I'll do
- 1:58:27Speaker 2: this really quick. When are the official jersey numbers going
- 1:58:29Speaker 2: to be updated? Eli, number nine. Reed, number 23. And
- 1:58:33Speaker 2: is there a hidden reason why Gabe has number 50
- 1:58:35Speaker 2: right now? Almost seems like Vrabel may be using that
- 1:58:38Speaker 2: as some type of motivation. Also, off topic, Tom Curran
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: and Phil is starting to sound like Paul's boys, Felber
- 1:58:45Speaker 2: and Maz. Negative, negative, negative. Tom is the one stressing
- 1:58:49Speaker 2: Gonzo's pick totals but failed to bring up Witherspoon as
- 1:58:53Speaker 2: the same amount or less. Everything is spellchecked, Fred, and
- 1:58:56Speaker 2: I proofread it.
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: Did he write it in that angry tone?
- 1:59:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:59:00Speaker 6: I just can't imagine anybody thinks that Phil Perry and
- 1:59:03Speaker 6: Tom Caron are negative.
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: I just can't.
- 1:59:05Speaker 2: They're really... What do you know about the numbers?
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: Because it has to do with uniforms. I think Reese, yeah,
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: Reese put some out. Evan's in the locker room now,
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: so they'll be... You should have them all. They should
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: all be out within... I know Reese already tweeted out
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: some of the new guys. I don't know if Eli did.
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: I thought Nine was the new running back, maybe. But yeah,
- 1:59:26Speaker 1: check Reese's Twitter. They'll all be out this afternoon.
- 1:59:30Speaker 2: Okay, and for us, we will be back on Tuesday.
- 1:59:34Speaker 2: I mean Thursday.
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: God. Yeah.
- 1:59:37Speaker 2: When is Catch-22 this week? I have no idea.
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: I believe it's tomorrow.
- 1:59:41Speaker 2: Tomorrow?
- 1:59:42Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:59:42Speaker 2: What time?
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: 10 to 12, I think.
- 1:59:44Speaker 2: 10 to 12.
- 1:59:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:59:45Speaker 2: Catch-22 tomorrow.
- 1:59:45Speaker 4: Why is it not 12 to 2?
- 1:59:48Speaker 3: Barth has a commitment.
- 1:59:49Speaker 2: Yeah, Barth is really being a diva.
- 1:59:51Speaker 6: When do we just allow Barth to just control.
- 1:59:55Speaker 4: The whole schedule?
- 1:59:55Speaker 2: I mean, he's half a Catch-22. If it's not for him,
- 1:59:57Speaker 2: it's just Catch-11. Yeah.
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: That's only half the field.
- 2:00:04Speaker 4: I didn't even know I was setting them up. That
- 2:00:06Speaker 4: was good.
- 2:00:07Speaker 2: All right. We will see you Thursday.
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
- 2:00:14Speaker 28: If you really want to help us, make sure you
