- 0:19Speaker 1: It's probably prudent and important enough for me to open
- 0:26Speaker 1: the program by giving a nod, tip of the cap
- 0:30Speaker 1: and a nod to our local area television meteorologists. They
- 0:41Speaker 1: told us, they warned us that we were going to
- 0:44Speaker 1: get a bucket ton if such a phrase can be invented,
- 0:50Speaker 1: of rain over the last couple of days. And by golly,
- 0:54Speaker 1: they were spot on. Listen, we get on the weather
- 0:56Speaker 1: people enough and I'm right there with them and saying, oh, yeah,
- 0:59Speaker 1: there's another there's another weather Mcgeddon red Herring coming down
- 1:04Speaker 1: when nothing happening. But they said there was gonna be
- 1:07Speaker 1: a lot of rain on Tuesday Wednesday, And the immortal
- 1:11Speaker 1: words of Earnest Tea Bass on the Andy Griffith Show, Yeah,
- 1:13Speaker 1: I was out there in it, you know. So good afternoon, everybody,
- 1:16Speaker 1: welcome to the program. Hope you're teaming dry here on
- 1:20Speaker 1: this Tuesday afternoon, as we bring in the program here
- 1:22Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and where
- 1:24Speaker 1: you can always listen to us for free on the
- 1:26Speaker 1: iHeartRadio AM.
- 1:27Speaker 2: My name is Craig Way.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us, and we're with you
- 1:30Speaker 1: up until five o'clock this afternoon. The producer is Jay Carman.
- 1:35Speaker 1: He's wearing a rain jacket today. I had a little
- 1:38Speaker 1: cover up here that I'd had for broadcast and games.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I've had to get outside in it.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Yeah, you're in the coordinator outfit here? Is that?
- 1:47Speaker 2: What that is?
- 1:48Speaker 3: I've seen coordinators wear it similar.
- 1:50Speaker 1: This is actually what I'm wearing today. And for folks
- 1:52Speaker 1: who aren't viewing it there you know on the stream
- 1:59Speaker 1: it's actually a pullover that's kind of rain repellent that's
- 2:04Speaker 1: in burn orange and it's got a Nike logo on it.
- 2:08Speaker 1: But this actual pullover is a prototype.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Right because it's it don't have sleeves.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Well, right is short sleep.
- 2:16Speaker 1: But there are other ones that are rain repellent that
- 2:20Speaker 1: are UT issued gear. This particular thing, while being burnt
- 2:25Speaker 1: orange and having that, it was created by a company
- 2:29Speaker 1: as a prototype and they sent it to UT Licensing
- 2:34Speaker 1: and all this kind of stuff, and I think in
- 2:36Speaker 1: the end they ended up not doing the deal and
- 2:37Speaker 1: it happened, but they sent me one and said here
- 2:43Speaker 1: have this if you want. I'm like, I'm not proud
- 2:47Speaker 1: if it's rain and I'll put it on. So I
- 2:51Speaker 1: do have a couple of jackets that are officially licensed.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Youut gear that are rain repellent as well. This just
- 2:58Speaker 1: happened to fit over a T shirt opted on today.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Other benefits as assigned.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Or you know whatever, or being a guinea pig as
- 3:07Speaker 1: assigned that sort of thing.
- 3:09Speaker 2: So anyway, I don't know how it was.
- 3:13Speaker 1: You live pretty close here to the iHeart Compound, which
- 3:16Speaker 1: is hard by Lake Austin and the Colorado River and
- 3:20Speaker 1: the Pennybacker Bridge here on the west side of town.
- 3:25Speaker 1: You live within a couple of miles of the building,
- 3:27Speaker 1: Is that correct?
- 3:28Speaker 3: Yeah, pretty close by. And we got probably the worst
- 3:31Speaker 3: of our rain this morning. Okay, if it did rain
- 3:35Speaker 3: hard last night, if it was after midnight, I slept
- 3:38Speaker 3: right through it.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Okay, very good we got We got a pretty good
- 3:43Speaker 1: shower last night. I always measure this by the fact
- 3:48Speaker 1: when the dog really doesn't want to go out in it.
- 3:52Speaker 1: But this morning is when it really opened up quite
- 3:55Speaker 1: a bit. Fortunately, we got her outside and she went
- 3:58Speaker 1: and did her thing before before the heavy stuff came down,
- 4:03Speaker 1: so that worked out alright. But it's been raned really
- 4:06Speaker 1: hard up in Williamson County and then some here in
- 4:08Speaker 1: Austin when I came in as well, Roger Wallace, of course,
- 4:13Speaker 1: my broadcast partner in Longhorn Football and who helps us
- 4:16Speaker 1: out also on baseball and men's and women's basketball, and
- 4:20Speaker 1: of course as his day job sports director at k
- 4:23Speaker 1: x AN. He and I met had a late morning
- 4:27Speaker 1: meeting this morning to go over some plans for the
- 4:29Speaker 1: fall and things of that nature.
- 4:31Speaker 2: And you will be familiar with this.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I think you will be, being both an East Coaster
- 4:39Speaker 1: and somebody worked in the Upper Midwest. You're familiar with
- 4:43Speaker 1: the coffee and pastry chain.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Tim Horton's yeah, okay, I've got family in Toronto.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, well sit there you go. There's only one
- 4:53Speaker 1: here in the Greater Auston area. It's over by ground
- 4:56Speaker 1: Rocket's over on six twenty. But a kind of like
- 5:00Speaker 1: the coffee at least the curing pods and stuff like that,
- 5:03Speaker 1: So I knew there was a way, and it's not
- 5:05Speaker 1: far from his house. So we met over there, uh,
- 5:07Speaker 1: just basically over coffee and and to talk about some things.
- 5:12Speaker 1: But anyway, when I when I got over there, it
- 5:14Speaker 1: was still coming down pretty good. Now we did slackened
- 5:17Speaker 1: a bit. That's a word that I'd like to use
- 5:19Speaker 1: from time to time because it only has that one meaning,
- 5:22Speaker 1: you know, slackened. You know, the rain had just kind
- 5:25Speaker 1: of let off a little bit. I remember saying that
- 5:28Speaker 1: one time when I was co hosting with Bill showing
- 5:30Speaker 1: you is what what did you say? I said, slackened
- 5:33Speaker 1: the rain is what do you mean let up? It's
- 5:38Speaker 1: slacked off a little bit. But it was raining pretty
- 5:43Speaker 1: significantly there now here by the iHeart compound. It's it's
- 5:47Speaker 1: it's just drippy. So anyway, I hope you're being safe
- 5:52Speaker 1: and careful and staying dry here on the program this afternoon.
- 5:57Speaker 1: First of all, we're going to keep you updated with
- 5:59Speaker 1: the other World Cup final, which has just kicked off
- 6:01Speaker 1: a few minutes ago, England and Argentina. Argentina, of course,
- 6:06Speaker 1: the defending champion, and they are just underway and scoreless.
- 6:10Speaker 1: They're six minutes, about to be seven minutes into the
- 6:13Speaker 1: action there as they play in Atlanta. The winner of
- 6:16Speaker 1: that is going to get Spain, who surprised the number
- 6:19Speaker 1: one team in the world.
- 6:20Speaker 2: They beat France yesterday to nil.
- 6:23Speaker 1: So France will play the loser of this match in
- 6:26Speaker 1: the third place game on Saturday. We went on in
- 6:29Speaker 1: length yesterday about third place games.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Yeah, that clip is up on our Instagram at am
- 6:33Speaker 3: thirteen hundred zone and on our ex if you miss
- 6:36Speaker 3: that story.
- 6:37Speaker 1: And I'm not as I'm not as down on the
- 6:42Speaker 1: third place game as a lot of people are.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Not as doubt as Vince Lombardi was.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, But I understand why a lot of people
- 6:50Speaker 1: think that it's a completely useless thing. I get that
- 6:54Speaker 1: the World Cup it's a little bit different because there
- 6:56Speaker 1: are financial incentives for those who are playing. I would
- 7:01Speaker 1: also say this too. Didn't you check to see that
- 7:05Speaker 1: third place matches in Miami? I believe yep. Okay for
- 7:10Speaker 1: those who were unable to procure a ticket and or
- 7:15Speaker 1: work the travel to get to the metropolitan New York
- 7:19Speaker 1: area to watch the World Cup final on Sunday, which
- 7:22Speaker 1: will feature Spain and the winner of this match England
- 7:25Speaker 1: and Argentina. Maybe you couldn't afford a ticket, or couldn't
- 7:29Speaker 1: get a ticket, or didn't want to pay for the
- 7:31Speaker 1: travel to go to New York or whatever. Those it
- 7:34Speaker 1: gives them a chance to see one more World Cup match,
- 7:37Speaker 1: albeit for third place. So there is that, So I
- 7:43Speaker 1: think there's some use in it for soccer fans anyway.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Well, when you wait four years between tournaments.
- 7:48Speaker 1: That's the other thing. So on, and let me also
- 7:52Speaker 1: say this, and this is going to get us into
- 7:54Speaker 1: our other topic. We are coming off watching a grand
- 8:00Speaker 1: spectacle of baseball last night, the Baseball All Star Game. Now,
- 8:04Speaker 1: the game itself turned out to be not that much
- 8:06Speaker 1: of a spectacle unless you're a really really big fan
- 8:10Speaker 1: of pitching, uh and the American League.
- 8:13Speaker 2: And we'll break that down and we'll talk about all that.
- 8:16Speaker 1: But even so as we get into talking about that,
- 8:24Speaker 1: that's an exhibition, it didn't count. Doesn't matter, that doesn't
- 8:29Speaker 1: count on the standings. The third place match for the
- 8:32Speaker 1: World Cup, eh, doesn't count in terms of you know,
- 8:37Speaker 1: whether you win or not, it does. It does, however,
- 8:41Speaker 1: go into your world ranking. So it's just like if
- 8:47Speaker 1: you're also watching a major championship in golf and the
- 8:51Speaker 1: final of the four majors tease off tomorrow at Royal
- 8:56Speaker 1: Birkdale in England. The Open Championship is the official title,
- 9:01Speaker 1: but more commonly known to Americans as the British Open.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I think by the Open Championship against tomorrow, and in
- 9:08Speaker 1: the three o'clock hour, our resident golf Honk Cameron Parker
- 9:12Speaker 1: will join us we'll get his thoughts on the golf course,
- 9:17Speaker 1: the championship and who he thinks he's going to be. Cameron,
- 9:21Speaker 1: by the way, is going to go to the Open
- 9:23Speaker 1: next year and that's it for him. Yeah, and it's
- 9:26Speaker 1: my plan as well.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Lynn and I.
- 9:28Speaker 1: We've got some things we have to work through in
- 9:30Speaker 1: checking dating and things like that, but we we kind
- 9:34Speaker 1: of have a tentative plan where we want to go
- 9:37Speaker 1: over first to Liverpool and see a lot of the
- 9:39Speaker 1: Beatles sites and do some of that touring stuff and
- 9:41Speaker 1: then and then go to Saint Andrews to see the Open,
- 9:46Speaker 1: because that's what holds the greatest incid interest in me.
- 9:50Speaker 1: For me in seeing, you know, one day of the
- 9:52Speaker 1: Open Championship is the fact that it's at Saint Andrews.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Pretty much regarded as the birthplace of golf Scotland is overall,
- 9:59Speaker 1: but that course, which began as a twelve whole course
- 10:03Speaker 1: in the late seventeen hundreds, I believe is probably as
- 10:10Speaker 1: good a place as any to plant the flag and
- 10:14Speaker 1: say the golf started here, just like you know, the
- 10:17Speaker 1: Pro Football Hall of Fame is in Canton, Ohio. Now,
- 10:21Speaker 1: it didn't really start in Canton, Ohio. Pro football. But
- 10:27Speaker 1: a lot of what happened to help shape what happened
- 10:31Speaker 1: with pro football in its early days in the nineteen
- 10:33Speaker 1: twenties took place in the Canton area, so it was
- 10:36Speaker 1: a logical place for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
- 10:39Speaker 1: That don't get me started on the Baseball Hall of Fame,
- 10:41Speaker 1: because we know about the fairy tale of what Cooperstown
- 10:45Speaker 1: is all about. Let me just say this, Cooperstown is
- 10:50Speaker 1: as good a place as any to have the Baseball
- 10:53Speaker 1: Hall of Fame in the museum.
- 10:55Speaker 2: It is beautiful, sublime play.
- 11:00Speaker 1: He's you know, near glimmer Glass Lake and all that
- 11:02Speaker 1: kind of stuff in upstate New York, and there was
- 11:05Speaker 1: a lot of very very early nineteenth century baseball played
- 11:09Speaker 1: in that area. That said, all that business about the
- 11:14Speaker 1: double day ball that was found in an attic and
- 11:17Speaker 1: that he invented it in Cooperstown at eighteen thirty nine,
- 11:21Speaker 1: that's all one gigantic urban myth. The dates don't a
- 11:25Speaker 1: lot don't aligned with one another. Double Day at the
- 11:29Speaker 1: time was, I believe, at West Point, so he couldn't
- 11:34Speaker 1: have been even though it's not that far from West
- 11:37Speaker 1: Point to Cooperstown. But it's a good couple of days
- 11:42Speaker 1: ride back in the nineteenth century. So and then you know,
- 11:46Speaker 1: he was later an officer in the Civil War for
- 11:49Speaker 1: the Union. And he never in any of his writings
- 11:52Speaker 1: or anything ever claimed anything about having anything to do
- 11:56Speaker 1: with baseball. But he was kind of anointed with that
- 12:02Speaker 1: crown having any and it's it's a big tall tale
- 12:05Speaker 1: of baseball belongs up there with Paul Bunyan and all
- 12:08Speaker 1: the other stuff.
- 12:08Speaker 3: You know, it doesn't I know, they claim double Day
- 12:12Speaker 3: at Army. I got a friend that's on the sports
- 12:14Speaker 3: information He.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Was there, Yeah, yeah, he was. He was. He was
- 12:17Speaker 2: an officer in the United.
- 12:18Speaker 3: States Army at the other stadium.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah he was. He was at West Point.
- 12:22Speaker 1: That is all factual. The fact that he was in
- 12:26Speaker 1: Cooperstown at eighteen thirty nine is not factual or has
- 12:30Speaker 1: never been proven to be true. And he never mentioned
- 12:35Speaker 1: anything at all about having anything to do with the
- 12:40Speaker 1: invention and popularization of baseball.
- 12:42Speaker 3: I didn't know all this. They didn't cover this in
- 12:44Speaker 3: the ken Burns dock.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Uh kind of hinted round. What ken Burns did best
- 12:52Speaker 1: with his career with that baseball documentary series is to
- 12:55Speaker 1: give proper accreditation. I think to Alexander Cartwright, Alexander Joy Cartwright,
- 13:00Speaker 1: he really kind of is the father of modern baseball
- 13:03Speaker 1: because he's the one who caught tofied the rules. He's
- 13:06Speaker 1: the one who decided a diamond shape. He's the one
- 13:10Speaker 1: who decided ninety feet between the bases. You know one thing,
- 13:14Speaker 1: it's always fascinating me. You know what the distance is
- 13:17Speaker 1: from the mountain home plate? Sixty feet six inches?
- 13:20Speaker 2: Very good?
- 13:22Speaker 1: Why sixty feet six How they arrived at that, and
- 13:26Speaker 1: how it seems to be the perfect distance. If it
- 13:30Speaker 1: was just like one foot closer, batting averages would probably
- 13:34Speaker 1: be one hundred points lower.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Well, you'd have the All Star Game going on since
- 13:37Speaker 3: the nineteen twenties.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Right, If it was one foot back, you might have
- 13:43Speaker 1: batting averages one hundred points higher.
- 13:45Speaker 3: You'd had batting practice home run derby since the nineteen twenties.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Yeah, so that that worked out.
- 13:50Speaker 1: But anyway, he's he is really, I think, genuinely credited
- 13:58Speaker 1: with being kind of the mud earned father of baseball.
- 14:01Speaker 1: There were other contributors, to be certain, but I think
- 14:04Speaker 1: Alexander Cartwright was probably the one with the game they
- 14:06Speaker 1: had that they played on the Allegian fields, there in Hoboken,
- 14:10Speaker 1: New Jersey and all that kind of stuff. That's a
- 14:13Speaker 1: more accurate depiction of how baseball really got going was,
- 14:16Speaker 1: as we know, baseball was a mutt. It was a mutt.
- 14:20Speaker 1: It was an amalgamation of a British game called rounders
- 14:24Speaker 1: and some other games.
- 14:27Speaker 2: It just kind of morphed into what it became.
- 14:31Speaker 3: And as Burns has been fascinated with his whole career,
- 14:35Speaker 3: he was very adamant to show us why it was
- 14:38Speaker 3: so then uniquely American, Yes.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Just like basketball is uniquely married the football. Football, of course,
- 14:45Speaker 1: dates back centuries. You know, they said in the fourteenth
- 14:48Speaker 1: century there were people that were playing kind of a
- 14:51Speaker 1: brand of soccer rugby football played in the streets of
- 14:56Speaker 1: London using a human.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Head as a ball. Yeah, that happened back in the
- 15:02Speaker 2: Middle Ages.
- 15:03Speaker 1: So and it is kind of morphed through the football,
- 15:06Speaker 1: but kind of became, you know what morphed out of
- 15:10Speaker 1: rugby and soccer and that sort of thing. Basketball, we know,
- 15:15Speaker 1: was completely uniquely invented by one man.
- 15:19Speaker 2: And while the rules.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Modified over time, doctor James Naismith's original rules in eighteen
- 15:24Speaker 1: ninety one, it's Springfield College as a as an activity
- 15:28Speaker 1: to do inside of gymnasiums other than calisthenics when they
- 15:33Speaker 1: couldn't go out during the winter months in Massachusetts. It
- 15:37Speaker 1: always makes me wonder if doctor James Naismith had been
- 15:40Speaker 1: working at the University of Georgia or Florida, would he
- 15:46Speaker 1: have invented basketball? Would have been the necessity being the
- 15:50Speaker 1: mother of invention moving it inside because of the harsh
- 15:54Speaker 1: winter weather in Massachusetts? Would that have been the motivation
- 15:58Speaker 1: behind down south with the weather was warmer?
- 16:00Speaker 2: Who knows?
- 16:00Speaker 3: I like to think somebody invents a team sport to
- 16:03Speaker 3: do other than kalistenix inside a gym, but it could
- 16:06Speaker 3: be completely different.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it could have been something different. They could have
- 16:09Speaker 1: been swinging brooms at basketballs for all we know. But anyway,
- 16:13Speaker 1: he's the one that came up with the peach baskets
- 16:15Speaker 1: and shooting and there was five in a side and
- 16:17Speaker 1: you had to pass the ball and he couldn't travel
- 16:19Speaker 1: with it and all that stuff, and he couldn't foul,
- 16:21Speaker 1: and you know, that's kind of how it originally was
- 16:24Speaker 1: laid out, and then it kind of evolved into the
- 16:26Speaker 1: game we know it to be today. To be certain,
- 16:29Speaker 1: doctor Naismith it's often said by many, would not recognize
- 16:32Speaker 1: the game today. He didn't like he was at the
- 16:35Speaker 1: NBA Summer League. Do you think he would recognize what
- 16:38Speaker 1: he was looking at there?
- 16:40Speaker 3: He doesn't like the clear path foul.
- 16:41Speaker 2: He probably would now he might be for that, but.
- 16:48Speaker 3: He coaches challenges.
- 16:49Speaker 1: I'll tell you what. He would be dead set against
- 16:52Speaker 1: the eurostep. Oh yeah, he would say that's traveling. In
- 16:55Speaker 1: a heartbeat, he would say there's no euro step there,
- 16:59Speaker 1: that doesn't exist.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Now, why would a player flop?
- 17:02Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 17:03Speaker 1: So anyway, those are just some random thoughts on things.
- 17:09Speaker 1: But we'll keep you updated on the World Cup match
- 17:12Speaker 1: England and Argentina in the seventeenth minute right now, and
- 17:15Speaker 1: they are scoreless in that World Cup semi final.
- 17:18Speaker 2: But we will keep you updated on all of that.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Okay, coming up a recap of the Baseball All Star Game. Also,
- 17:26Speaker 1: as always, we're more than happy to have you weigh
- 17:32Speaker 1: in with your thoughts, your questions, your comments, your opinions.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Can do that a couple of ways. One you can
- 17:39Speaker 1: text us, and to do that you simply text the
- 17:43Speaker 1: word texas follow by your question or comment to eight
- 17:46Speaker 1: one five three zero. So text the word Texas, follow
- 17:50Speaker 1: by your question and comment to eight one five three
- 17:53Speaker 1: zero standard messaging and data rates. Man play. That's one way,
- 17:58Speaker 1: and then we'll you know, we'll get to your texts.
- 18:01Speaker 1: As the situation warns. There's another way to reach us too,
- 18:08Speaker 1: and that's with your voice through our talk back microphone
- 18:13Speaker 1: or talkback system through the iHeartRadio app. Very easy. All
- 18:17Speaker 1: you have to do if you haven't already done it,
- 18:20Speaker 1: and many people have already downloaded the free iHeartRadio app
- 18:24Speaker 1: because they listen to this program streaming on the iHeart
- 18:27Speaker 1: Radio app.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Good for you.
- 18:28Speaker 1: If you haven't one way you can reach us, and
- 18:31Speaker 1: when we do contesting, we do it through this way
- 18:34Speaker 1: as well. So all you do is you download on
- 18:38Speaker 1: your iPhone or Android, you know, your smartphone. You download
- 18:42Speaker 1: the iHeart Radio app. It's really easy to do. Is
- 18:44Speaker 1: look it up boom, it'll come down and it's free.
- 18:47Speaker 1: And then once you have a downloaded then you do
- 18:49Speaker 1: a search and your you know, search window or magnifying
- 18:53Speaker 1: glass or search bar or whatever for AM thirteen under
- 18:57Speaker 1: the zone. So you just search AM thirteen hundred the zone.
- 19:00Speaker 1: It'll pop right up, and when it does, you're going
- 19:03Speaker 1: to see two buttons. One's a little white one. It's
- 19:05Speaker 1: triangular shape. You push that if you want to listen
- 19:07Speaker 1: to what's going on in the air. The other button
- 19:10Speaker 1: is a red button that has a little white microphone
- 19:14Speaker 1: in it. That is the talkback microphone. That's our talkback feature.
- 19:18Speaker 1: And what you would do is just push that button
- 19:21Speaker 1: and then you got thirty seconds to lay one on us,
- 19:25Speaker 1: let us know what you're thinking or if you have
- 19:27Speaker 1: a question, that's okay too. So that's the talkback feature.
- 19:31Speaker 1: You could do that through the iHeartRadio app. All right,
- 19:33Speaker 1: well talk to Major League Baseball. Yes, we have Inconceivable theater.
- 19:38Speaker 1: It was all I could do to hold off on
- 19:40Speaker 1: one story to save it for Friday, because it happens
- 19:45Speaker 1: in the Sunshine State. So we got to hold on
- 19:48Speaker 1: to that until we get to Florida Man and in
- 19:51Speaker 1: this case Florida woman story on Friday for Inconceivable. When
- 19:57Speaker 1: we do that, when we go to the lowest of
- 20:02Speaker 1: the lower forty eight states, yes, the most flaccid to
- 20:06Speaker 1: grab that low hanging fruit.
- 20:08Speaker 2: But we're not doing that today.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Today is a yacht rock Wednesday, So we'll have that
- 20:13Speaker 1: coming up, and we'll have Inconceivable coming up this hour
- 20:18Speaker 1: again Cameron Parker with a British Open or an Open
- 20:21Speaker 1: Championship preview coming up next hour, and we take your
- 20:25Speaker 1: thoughts as well here on a drippy, rainy Wednesday on
- 20:29Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
- 20:35Speaker 1: I often said, if there was a mount Rushmore for
- 20:40Speaker 1: yacht rock individually, the godfather obviously would would be Michael McDonald.
- 20:48Speaker 1: You could put Kenny Loggins up there, You could put
- 20:50Speaker 1: Christopher Cross up there, you could put Gordon Lightfoot up
- 20:52Speaker 1: there to do that. If it was bands, these guys
- 20:58Speaker 1: were the lead off Toto Yeah, more so than most
- 21:04Speaker 1: of it, because they were kind of there on the
- 21:06Speaker 1: ground floor of the of it really starting. Because a
- 21:09Speaker 1: lot of their musicians played on a lot of other
- 21:13Speaker 1: bands and with a lot of other bands, including Steely Dan,
- 21:17Speaker 1: including playing with the Doobies or with Michael McDonald Toto.
- 21:23Speaker 1: So Yeah, and in their own world like in that
- 21:27Speaker 1: if you've ever seen that yacht Rock documentary when they
- 21:30Speaker 1: explain how utterly stupefied, dumbfounded, flummoxed they were at the
- 21:39Speaker 1: popularity of Africa. They thought it was a throwaway song.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Who knew that some forty five years later, Longhorn students
- 21:52Speaker 1: in the stands during a television time out in the
- 21:56Speaker 1: third quarter of a Saturday night college football game would
- 22:00Speaker 1: be singing Africa, right, who do right?
- 22:05Speaker 2: But they do?
- 22:06Speaker 3: And not only them, all over the country, and like,
- 22:08Speaker 3: have we ever been to Africa?
- 22:10Speaker 1: No? No, no, So anyway, there was that.
- 22:15Speaker 2: All right.
- 22:16Speaker 1: I want to do a little recap of the All
- 22:21Speaker 1: Star Game, and it is it's the one All Star game.
- 22:30Speaker 2: That I will watch.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Because, as I said yesterday, it's the one All Star
- 22:35Speaker 1: game that most closely approximates what a regular season game
- 22:41Speaker 1: would resemble.
- 22:42Speaker 2: And even that.
- 22:44Speaker 1: There are some vast difference, especially as the game has
- 22:47Speaker 1: evolved over time. It's come now down to two things.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Almost no pitcher pitches more than one inning. There was
- 22:56Speaker 1: an exception that last night, Justin Robleski of the Dodgers. Yeah,
- 22:59Speaker 1: your guy, Well, he had a great first I guess
- 23:03Speaker 1: it was in the seventh struck out. The side got
- 23:08Speaker 1: the first down of the eight, then gave up that
- 23:10Speaker 1: booming home run the Miguel Vargas.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Four hundred and thirty three feet one hundred and seven
- 23:14Speaker 3: off the bat and then he got.
- 23:17Speaker 1: The next two batters out that was kind of microcosmic
- 23:21Speaker 1: of Justin Robleski season.
- 23:22Speaker 2: He's ten and two.
- 23:24Speaker 1: By and large, he's been really really good, with a
- 23:26Speaker 1: mistake here and a mistake there, and then that was
- 23:29Speaker 1: kind of what happened there with that. Other than Rableski,
- 23:32Speaker 1: no man pitched more than one inning, and there were
- 23:36Speaker 1: several occasions where a guy pitched two thirds of an
- 23:39Speaker 1: inning or got one batter, that sort of thing. Not
- 23:43Speaker 1: only was that enlarge measure by design, it happened by
- 23:48Speaker 1: necessity as well. But I will also tell you this,
- 23:52Speaker 1: for anybody who was watching this, I think they would
- 23:54Speaker 1: agree that it did not seem to matter who was
- 23:59Speaker 1: on the mound for the American League because they're going
- 24:02Speaker 1: to get the Nation League hitters out. American League pitchers
- 24:07Speaker 1: faced thirty a total of thirty National League hitters. They
- 24:12Speaker 1: struck out fifteen of them. Half of those batters they
- 24:17Speaker 1: struck out, They allowed three singles. That was it, and
- 24:22Speaker 1: I walked. That was all that happened, and it was
- 24:28Speaker 1: it was very impressive, very dominant. It started with Dylan
- 24:33Speaker 1: Sees from the Blue Jays, who while being miked up
- 24:38Speaker 1: along with catcher Shay Langeleiers the Baylor Bear product were
- 24:43Speaker 1: engaged in the conversation and with the booth with Joe
- 24:50Speaker 1: Davis and John Smolds they're calling the game on Fox.
- 24:56Speaker 1: But in the past I kind of let it bother
- 24:59Speaker 1: me a little bit. I was like, let the guys
- 25:01Speaker 1: concentrate on the game. It's an exhibition. And then one
- 25:04Speaker 1: thing that was impressive about it when Ceese was talking,
- 25:08Speaker 1: he didn't really converse that much with Joe and John.
- 25:13Speaker 1: It was mainly with langlers. We're going to go hard
- 25:15Speaker 1: slider here. We're a fastball down in a way.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Because pictures don't usually get that luxury direct line into
- 25:21Speaker 3: their catchers.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Yea, right, right, So that was it was a lot
- 25:24Speaker 1: of that, and so that was interesting.
- 25:26Speaker 3: Uh.
- 25:26Speaker 2: That part of it was.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Let's let's go back to it. Let's go back to
- 25:29Speaker 3: that one. Yeah, we'll go back to that one, go
- 25:32Speaker 3: back to the slider.
- 25:34Speaker 1: So that part I think had some use when they
- 25:38Speaker 1: were talking to outfielders, whether it was he Crow, Armstrong
- 25:41Speaker 1: or somebody on the American league side, that was that
- 25:44Speaker 1: was good too. The one part I didn't I wasn't
- 25:47Speaker 1: that impressed with uh. And and this is on Fox
- 25:52Speaker 1: on their technicians for this was when they did that
- 25:55Speaker 1: little powwow with the pictures when they had Justin Verlander
- 25:58Speaker 1: and Jacob Nzarowski and who else.
- 26:01Speaker 3: Is Schlitler, Yeah, Cam Schlitzler.
- 26:03Speaker 1: The Yankees outside noise kept kind of stepping on it
- 26:08Speaker 1: a little bit, and I don't know that you can
- 26:10Speaker 1: do anything about that because they're all miked up and
- 26:12Speaker 1: things of that nature. You have to have a pretty
- 26:14Speaker 1: fast audio man with his hands killing killing the talk
- 26:19Speaker 1: back buttons. It probably wasn't going to do that. They
- 26:20Speaker 1: were probably gonna leave everybody's MIC's open. So that happened
- 26:25Speaker 1: as a result of that, but by and large it
- 26:28Speaker 1: was it was things were okay, they were executed.
- 26:32Speaker 2: I think okay. Off of that.
- 26:34Speaker 1: In the end, it was a four nothing American League victory.
- 26:36Speaker 1: They dominated with what they did on the mound. Now,
- 26:42Speaker 1: I think everybody got in the game that was on
- 26:45Speaker 1: the rod set for two guys, both were pitchers. If
- 26:48Speaker 1: I'm if I'm being created. Justin Verlander we knew was
- 26:51Speaker 1: not going to pitch. He's still on the injured list,
- 26:53Speaker 1: so that's why they had a lot of fun talking
- 26:55Speaker 1: with him. The others Chris Sale for the Braves and
- 27:00Speaker 1: and Dave Roberts the Nation League manager from the Dodgers
- 27:03Speaker 1: was asked, Hey, Sales the only one who didn't pitch.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Why did he not pitch?
- 27:07Speaker 4: So it was one of those things where the organization
- 27:10Speaker 4: wanted us to stay away from him. And so I
- 27:14Speaker 4: think he just pitched recently and it's a lot of
- 27:17Speaker 4: so for us, we really had, you know, ten innings
- 27:20Speaker 4: of pitching, and it was partly because Robo Robleski went
- 27:24Speaker 4: two innings which allowed me to break up the ninth INNY.
- 27:28Speaker 4: And I think it was an organizational thing that they
- 27:30Speaker 4: didn't want him to pitch.
- 27:32Speaker 1: For being completely honest, And what I started to say
- 27:36Speaker 1: earlier was the All Star the modification of Baseball's All
- 27:40Speaker 1: Star Game, which does separate itself from what a regular
- 27:44Speaker 1: season game. We've looked is the the the abundance of
- 27:51Speaker 1: pitchers used in the game. You don't have that regular
- 27:56Speaker 1: season game unless things are going very very wrong for
- 27:58Speaker 1: your team. But you know, you know, in a game
- 28:02Speaker 1: where one team scored three runs in the first inning
- 28:04Speaker 1: and another run wasn't scored into what the eighth.
- 28:06Speaker 3: That's an average Nationals game. By the way, Oh there,
- 28:09Speaker 3: they'll use an opener give up three in the first
- 28:11Speaker 3: starter comes in good middle six bullpen implodes.
- 28:15Speaker 1: You know, it should make you feel good as a
- 28:17Speaker 1: Nationals fan that CJ. Abrams was and James Wood were
- 28:20Speaker 1: no different than any of the other hitters. They were
- 28:22Speaker 1: flailing and missing, just like Freddie Freeman did. He did
- 28:27Speaker 1: draw one walk, but Freeman also struck out in the
- 28:29Speaker 1: key situations. Andy Pa has struck out. You know, it's
- 28:33Speaker 1: a fifteen guys struck out.
- 28:35Speaker 5: Well.
- 28:35Speaker 3: I wonder though, if the All Star Game has lost
- 28:37Speaker 3: any of its luster in that. Now we get to
- 28:40Speaker 3: see these balance schedules, We get to see the National
- 28:42Speaker 3: League go against the American League. Almost every weekend there's
- 28:45Speaker 3: an ARKI matchup between the two leagues. So it was
- 28:49Speaker 3: always the best All Star Game because the guys were
- 28:51Speaker 3: actually competing and you got to see the best matchup
- 28:54Speaker 3: in a way that you wouldn't normally get to see.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Well, you know, there was a time, certainly the OG
- 28:59Speaker 1: day he's back in the you know, the All Star
- 29:02Speaker 1: Games started in nineteen thirty three, but in the forties
- 29:04Speaker 1: and fifties and even well into the sixties, the starters
- 29:09Speaker 1: played about six seven innings. There were some starters who
- 29:13Speaker 1: played the entire game. Willie Mays played all nine innings
- 29:16Speaker 1: of several of the All Star Games. He I think
- 29:18Speaker 1: hold still holds the record most All Star games, and
- 29:21Speaker 1: that includes the four years from nineteen fifty nine to
- 29:23Speaker 1: nineteen sixty two when the actual played two All Star
- 29:25Speaker 1: Games a year, separated by about three weeks, like in
- 29:29Speaker 1: early July and late July, or late June and early July,
- 29:33Speaker 1: they played two. How odd they played two? They played
- 29:36Speaker 1: two All Star Games a year, and again kind of
- 29:41Speaker 1: like that third place game in the nfl A playoff
- 29:43Speaker 1: ball there there were financial stipulations in their charitable stipulations
- 29:50Speaker 1: as a result of that. So anyway, we'll hear more
- 29:53Speaker 1: from both Dave Roberts, the Nation League manager, and John Schneider,
- 29:57Speaker 1: the American League manager, the manager of Toronto Blue Chase.
- 30:00Speaker 1: We'll hear more from them throughout the course of the afternoon. Meanwhile,
- 30:05Speaker 1: England with a good opportunity in the thirty six minute
- 30:10Speaker 1: but going unanswered. They're still scoreless against Argentina in that World.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Cup semi final.
- 30:15Speaker 1: We'll keep you updated on that up next Inconceivable here
- 30:19Speaker 1: on a yacht Rock Wednesday afternoon on Sports Radio AM
- 30:21Speaker 1: thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app second hour
- 30:37Speaker 1: of the program here on Sports Radio.
- 30:39Speaker 2: AM thirteen under the Zone. Craig wait with you.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Alongside the producer Jay Carmon. Glad to have you with
- 30:46Speaker 1: us as well as we.
- 30:49Speaker 5: Bring you.
- 30:51Speaker 1: The program here on a kind of a wet, drippy,
- 30:55Speaker 1: what has been stormy afternoon. And in fact, I just
- 31:03Speaker 1: got notification that they've done a ground stop, not in
- 31:08Speaker 1: Austin that I've seen, but they've done a ground stop
- 31:12Speaker 1: in the Dallas Forward Metroplex, both at DFW International Airport
- 31:18Speaker 1: and at love Field in Dallas because of storms in
- 31:22Speaker 1: the area. So it's a stormy day all across the
- 31:27Speaker 1: state of Texas. So do be careful that you ever
- 31:29Speaker 1: flown in the love Field. I know you've obviously flown
- 31:31Speaker 1: in and out of DFW.
- 31:32Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I think I went into love Field one time.
- 31:36Speaker 3: I think I was stopping. Yeah, but I think I
- 31:38Speaker 3: was just stopping over on the way to Birmingham. Okay,
- 31:41Speaker 3: let's I've got my grandmother lives there right right.
- 31:43Speaker 1: All right, flying from here on out there, Okay, that
- 31:47Speaker 1: that makes sense. On the text line, got a nice
- 31:54Speaker 1: text that said I visited the Institute of Texan Cultures
- 32:01Speaker 1: years ago, They had a little section on Abner double
- 32:04Speaker 1: Day because we were talking about the founding of the baseball,
- 32:08Speaker 1: founding of the game of baseball, and I said it
- 32:11Speaker 1: would be it would be a tall tale to say
- 32:15Speaker 1: that he actually invented the game, but anyway, said they
- 32:18Speaker 1: had a little section on Abner double Day. The story
- 32:20Speaker 1: said that when he arrived at Fort Bliss in eighteen
- 32:24Speaker 1: seventy one, he was there for about seventeen months, he
- 32:28Speaker 1: observed other soldiers playing a game on a field with
- 32:31Speaker 1: a ball and something resembling a bat. Makes you think,
- 32:35Speaker 1: was baseball really invented in El Paso? I'm just going
- 32:38Speaker 1: about what the Institute said. Wow, well, I'll tell you what.
- 32:42Speaker 1: It's a valid question. It would depend on how far
- 32:46Speaker 1: back that went. Because the Alexander Cartwright game, the Holeboken Game.
- 32:52Speaker 1: There was a book I read once years ago called
- 32:55Speaker 1: the Jersey Game, and it got into that ever recognized
- 33:02Speaker 1: game between the Knickerbocker Baseball Club of New York that
- 33:07Speaker 1: Cartwright was a part of in another group, and the
- 33:10Speaker 1: Knickerbocker group won I think twenty three to one or
- 33:13Speaker 1: something like that, and they played nine innings, and it
- 33:15Speaker 1: was all of those things that were codified and set
- 33:18Speaker 1: out by Alexander Joey Cartwright. And the one thing about it,
- 33:24Speaker 1: that game took place in eighteen forty five, So that
- 33:27Speaker 1: would have preceded Doubleday in El Paso by twenty six years.
- 33:33Speaker 1: But to the Texters point, maybe it was started earlier
- 33:38Speaker 1: than that.
- 33:40Speaker 2: You know out there somewhere.
- 33:42Speaker 3: Put it in the El Paso Browns Okay, played in
- 33:48Speaker 3: the eighteen nineties. Okay, so that there is a long
- 33:52Speaker 3: baseball history.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Right well by the eighteen nineties, I mean, the National
- 33:55Speaker 1: League was already well underway. It started in eighteen seventy
- 33:59Speaker 1: six and all that. But it could mean that the
- 34:04Speaker 1: starting of actually playing baseball nel Passo could have predated
- 34:08Speaker 1: on back several decades, including prior to eighteen seventy one,
- 34:11Speaker 1: when Doubleday was out there.
- 34:12Speaker 3: Here's a name for you, uh, the El Paso Times.
- 34:15Speaker 3: As a piece, l Paso is introduced to baseball in
- 34:17Speaker 3: the eighteen eighties by early pioneers like Charles F. Giva
- 34:22Speaker 3: Damn Jones, who organized the Santa Fe baseball team in
- 34:27Speaker 3: the city.
- 34:27Speaker 1: Okay, all right, well, and what the text are said
- 34:31Speaker 1: here about eighteen seventy one and fort Bliss is pretty interesting.
- 34:33Speaker 1: I did not know that Abner Doubleday spend time at
- 34:36Speaker 1: Fort Bliss, one of the largest military installations in the world.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Of course, my most vivid memory of Fort Bliss happened
- 34:48Speaker 1: eight years ago or seven years ago, I guess when
- 34:53Speaker 1: the Long Worn men's basketball team opened its season playing
- 34:58Speaker 1: the Arkansas Razorbacks on the Army base in Fort Bliss.
- 35:05Speaker 1: And it was on the Friday night in novemberands the
- 35:08Speaker 1: night before Texas was to play Texas Tech in Lubbock.
- 35:12Speaker 1: So what I did was to fly to l pass
- 35:16Speaker 1: On and get a rental card to call the basket
- 35:18Speaker 1: on and then drive overnight from l Passa to Lubbock,
- 35:21Speaker 1: cutting across Southeastern New Mexico in the process.
- 35:24Speaker 3: Wow, not a lot of lights on that drive.
- 35:26Speaker 5: Nope.
- 35:27Speaker 1: And that was also the game where the internet went
- 35:31Speaker 1: out on the base at the under four time out
- 35:34Speaker 1: of the first half.
- 35:34Speaker 2: So I called the rest of the first half on
- 35:36Speaker 2: the cell phone.
- 35:37Speaker 1: And got the halftime, and they got me a pay phone,
- 35:41Speaker 1: or not a payphone, a touchtone dial phone, touchtone phone,
- 35:45Speaker 1: and I called up the studio and flipped the phone
- 35:49Speaker 1: upside down like a stick mic and called it all
- 35:53Speaker 1: the way until.
- 35:55Speaker 2: The uh under.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I believe it was the under twelve time out of
- 36:03Speaker 1: the second half when that happened, and.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Then we finally got it back and was over.
- 36:09Speaker 1: The media relations person at the base was very apologetic
- 36:15Speaker 1: about it, saying, look, I'm sorry this happened, and you
- 36:19Speaker 1: know that it worked out this way, and I said,
- 36:23Speaker 1: it's okay, we got through it all. I said, but
- 36:25Speaker 1: my biggest concern is with the internet going out on
- 36:30Speaker 1: the base. I'm far more concerned about our nation's defense system.
- 36:37Speaker 1: And he said, wow, they have a backup systems, but
- 36:40Speaker 1: this it was November of twenty eighteen.
- 36:43Speaker 3: As I shown it went it went out on the
- 36:44Speaker 3: Oh okay.
- 36:46Speaker 2: It was November of twenty eighteen.
- 36:50Speaker 3: Oh wow, yeah, that's that's also you have showed me
- 36:52Speaker 3: that before show the camera. I was watching with yep.
- 36:55Speaker 1: And and what that is is Eddie Orn is beside me.
- 36:58Speaker 1: And what that is is I'm holding the phone upside down.
- 37:04Speaker 1: I am wearing my headphone so that I can hear
- 37:07Speaker 1: myself and that Eddie can hear me.
- 37:09Speaker 2: But I'm basically passing the phone of it.
- 37:11Speaker 1: So that went from the under four time out of
- 37:14Speaker 1: the first half to the under twelve time out of
- 37:18Speaker 1: the second half like that, and then finished the game
- 37:22Speaker 1: up regular after.
- 37:23Speaker 3: Did you know when you were back from breaks?
- 37:27Speaker 1: Well, I mean I was on telephone and I would listen,
- 37:30Speaker 1: you know, I put it up and then I could
- 37:31Speaker 1: hear it bump them back, and then I would go
- 37:33Speaker 1: and start talking again. Wow, you make new You do
- 37:36Speaker 1: what you have to do to get the game on
- 37:37Speaker 1: the air and keep it on the air, all right.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Up next a preview of the Open Championship. The final
- 37:44Speaker 1: of the four golf Majors are on. Cameron Parker joins
- 37:47Speaker 1: us next. By the way, England Argentina is still scoreless.
- 37:50Speaker 1: They've begun the second half during the forty ninth minute.
- 37:53Speaker 1: No score in that SUMMERFI to play Spain on Sunday
- 37:58Speaker 1: for the Worldchampionship. But we'll talk some golf up next
- 38:02Speaker 1: on thirteen under the zone.
- 38:05Speaker 2: Show our hands out there.
- 38:06Speaker 1: If you knew this was Doobie Brothers, now you need
- 38:16Speaker 1: it's called just in time here on a yacht rock.
- 38:18Speaker 1: The Wednesday update on the World Cup. A grievous era
- 38:23Speaker 1: by the Argentines. Back in there and England capitalized with
- 38:32Speaker 1: a goal and in the fifty six minute now England leads,
- 38:38Speaker 1: whereas they would say England lead Argentina one nil there
- 38:44Speaker 1: in the World Cup semi final.
- 38:45Speaker 3: And it's Anthony Gordon who went viral for his funny
- 38:48Speaker 3: exchange with the Mexican coach.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I remember that, that's right. So he finished off,
- 38:53Speaker 1: But it really started with a mistake in the back
- 38:56Speaker 1: by Argentina giving it away and Gordon winds up capitalizing
- 39:00Speaker 1: the goal. I mentioned that Cameron Parker was joining us
- 39:05Speaker 1: here for a preview of the Open Championship. However, it
- 39:08Speaker 1: should be noted the camp is also very much an
- 39:11Speaker 1: aficionado of Indian international soccer. Big fan of Chelsea, if
- 39:16Speaker 1: I remember correctly, is go Blues, Go Blues.
- 39:20Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, So.
- 39:24Speaker 1: I mentioned earlier in the program that you have plans
- 39:28Speaker 1: to be across the pond to go to the Open
- 39:32Speaker 1: Championship next year at St.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Andrews.
- 39:34Speaker 6: Correct, that's correct, and I believe you'll also be out
- 39:37Speaker 6: there as well.
- 39:37Speaker 1: The preliminary plans are underway for us to make it
- 39:40Speaker 1: at least for the first day off of that. Now,
- 39:43Speaker 1: when you're over there, you're going to go see Chelsea play.
- 39:45Speaker 6: If the schedule not sure, I'm going over to my
- 39:48Speaker 6: dad and hopefully a few other friends. We definitely we
- 39:50Speaker 6: want to play some golf for sure, that's the main objectives.
- 39:54Speaker 6: So I would love to spend you know, possibly a
- 39:56Speaker 6: week in Scotland then maybe week you know, traveling to London,
- 40:03Speaker 6: so we'll see. You know, they've got great transportation there,
- 40:06Speaker 6: the high Rail, so hopefully find some time in London
- 40:11Speaker 6: as well.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Okay, all right, so that would be that would be
- 40:14Speaker 1: uh the case, and and and uh if I make
- 40:20Speaker 1: it over there, we're going to endeavor to see my team,
- 40:23Speaker 1: my football club Liverpool there you go, like, we'll see
- 40:25Speaker 1: if that that happens off of that. Okay, So you
- 40:31Speaker 1: said when I when I mentioned England scoring, you've seemed
- 40:33Speaker 1: dismayed by it.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Are you rooting for.
- 40:36Speaker 6: Argentina England's might pick to win this match? Is it
- 40:39Speaker 6: really Messy? You know, I love MESSI he was able
- 40:41Speaker 6: to do at thirty eight years old.
- 40:43Speaker 2: You know, you don't like Harlie Kane.
- 40:45Speaker 6: Harry Kane's all right, you know, oh Irish standing Craig Riech, James,
- 40:50Speaker 6: you know Chelsea Blue on the team as well. But
- 40:53Speaker 6: you know, I like the storyline of Messy. But honestly,
- 40:56Speaker 6: It's been a great World Cup. So you know, with
- 40:59Speaker 6: Spain upsetting France, I did not see that coming because
- 41:01Speaker 6: I had to see Spain in the final.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Honestly, England, Spain or Argentina.
- 41:07Speaker 6: Spain's gonna set up, I think, very nicely for an
- 41:09Speaker 6: incredible championship match on Sunday.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Are you going to pay any attention to the third
- 41:14Speaker 1: place game on Saturday France against the loser of this game.
- 41:18Speaker 6: Maybe a little bit, because it could be Lionel Messi's
- 41:21Speaker 6: final World Cup game in Miami. In Miami, yeah, obviously
- 41:25Speaker 6: where you know he plays for Inter Miami, his MLS club,
- 41:28Speaker 6: So you know that'll be a fun storyline. So you know,
- 41:32Speaker 6: of course, he said before that this was his final
- 41:34Speaker 6: World Cup a couple of times throughout his international career,
- 41:38Speaker 6: as has Ronaldo, and they always seem to come back.
- 41:40Speaker 6: So we'll see if you know, it truly is his
- 41:43Speaker 6: last one. It does feel like it is his last
- 41:45Speaker 6: World Cup. So I'll be paying attention a little bit,
- 41:48Speaker 6: I will, you guys locked in probably to it.
- 41:50Speaker 2: But you know, yeah, we.
- 41:51Speaker 1: Did a whole big thing about third place games yesterday
- 41:54Speaker 1: on the program.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, because I know.
- 41:57Speaker 1: How American public feels about certain thing which, by the way,
- 42:04Speaker 1: and this will lead us right in the talk about
- 42:06Speaker 1: the Open Championship. Did I read the quote correctly that
- 42:12Speaker 1: Scotty Scheffler said finishing in second place is worse than
- 42:17Speaker 1: missing the cut? Did he actually say that?
- 42:21Speaker 6: That's a very Scottism type, It's a very Ricky Bobby thing.
- 42:25Speaker 1: If you're not first, your last, you know, that kind
- 42:27Speaker 1: of thing.
- 42:27Speaker 6: I know he did say that, you know, he will
- 42:30Speaker 6: be dead, so his legacy doesn't really matter too much
- 42:33Speaker 6: as Jack Roy McElroy. So yeah, but that that kind
- 42:38Speaker 6: of sums up Scotty. You know, it's you know, it's
- 42:40Speaker 6: a major championship week when Scotty Scheffler is talking about
- 42:44Speaker 6: life and death, because he seems to always go in
- 42:48Speaker 6: a little bit more in depth on on his legacy,
- 42:51Speaker 6: giving you some quotes that you know, Tiger Woods I
- 42:53Speaker 6: Phil Nicholson wouldn't have given you.
- 42:55Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true. There's an article today previewing the Open
- 43:00Speaker 1: in The Athletic with the headline twenty twenty six Open
- 43:03Speaker 1: Championship DFS picks. I don't know what that is daily
- 43:07Speaker 1: fantasy sites. That's why I don't know. Okay, all right,
- 43:11Speaker 1: and the odds, and then it says are Scotty Scheffler
- 43:15Speaker 1: and Rory McElroy worth the price, which gets into the favorite.
- 43:21Speaker 1: So I'm trying to see what the price is.
- 43:24Speaker 2: Do you know what the gaming on those? I do
- 43:28Speaker 2: not know.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Scotty is a plus seven point fifty. Rory is a
- 43:32Speaker 1: plus nine hundred on the betting slip one. So you know,
- 43:39Speaker 1: would those be your two favorites.
- 43:42Speaker 6: I think Roy mclroy is probably out of the big dogs,
- 43:46Speaker 6: my favorite to win the Open Championship. Obviously when the Masters.
- 43:51Speaker 6: This season, he's taking a little bit more time off
- 43:54Speaker 6: from the rigorous PGA tour schedule and has spent more
- 43:58Speaker 6: time focused on resting, healing up in you know, scouting.
- 44:02Speaker 6: You know, he took some time to come over across
- 44:05Speaker 6: the pond and scout Royal Burkedale, where they're playing at
- 44:08Speaker 6: this week, which is not too far from Liverpool actually,
- 44:11Speaker 6: so you know, this type of game he really really
- 44:15Speaker 6: suits his style of play. What they've done the Royal Burkedale.
- 44:19Speaker 6: I don't know how much you guys have seen, but
- 44:20Speaker 6: this course is baked out. It's north of Liverpool, it's
- 44:23Speaker 6: west of Manchester. Yeah, and it's gonna be feisty conditions
- 44:30Speaker 6: this week. The fairways are rolling out. I think Jordan's
- 44:33Speaker 6: beats on a Monday that his five iron went three
- 44:35Speaker 6: hundred yards. It's very reminiscent to two thousand and six
- 44:40Speaker 6: at Hoylake. That's the year Tiger Woods one. Of course,
- 44:43Speaker 6: it was right after his dad passed away, I believe,
- 44:47Speaker 6: and he had the emotional embrace with Steve Williams' caddie
- 44:50Speaker 6: on the eighteenth green where he was hugging him and
- 44:53Speaker 6: he just broke down and you could tell Steve Stevie
- 44:55Speaker 6: was trying to get away from him, but Tiger wouldn't
- 44:57Speaker 6: let goes. Also the Sunday where Sergio Garcia wore an
- 45:01Speaker 6: all yellow mustard golf outfit which hopefully was burned following
- 45:07Speaker 6: that round.
- 45:08Speaker 2: But actually sported by the Savannah bananas. Yes, yeah, they
- 45:11Speaker 2: just took it right.
- 45:12Speaker 6: But the point being is that that that tournament, the
- 45:15Speaker 6: course was so firm and fast that we hadn't really
- 45:17Speaker 6: seen anything like it.
- 45:18Speaker 2: And that's what we're in four conditions this week.
- 45:20Speaker 6: So it doesn't it's not going to suit the drivers,
- 45:25Speaker 6: the guys who can drive the ball the farthest. It'll
- 45:27Speaker 6: it'll help the guys who are able to or really
- 45:30Speaker 6: tailored to the guys who are able to control their
- 45:32Speaker 6: long irons, you know, be able to find the fair
- 45:34Speaker 6: away hit stingers. Roy McRoy has that type of game game.
- 45:39Speaker 6: He's been playing great. I think really he should be
- 45:43Speaker 6: the favorite. I know, I know, Scotty's kind of been
- 45:45Speaker 6: up and down this year. I just don't think he
- 45:47Speaker 6: has it. He missed the cut last week of the
- 45:48Speaker 6: Scottish Open. Weird performance win the US hope I did,
- 45:52Speaker 6: I didn't, but.
- 45:53Speaker 2: Now you've cut. Yeah, but now you've come away with it.
- 45:55Speaker 6: Thinking form since then just has n't been great. It
- 45:58Speaker 6: has him been the Scotti Scheffler that we're used to
- 46:02Speaker 6: sing and I think the type of Lynks golf that
- 46:04Speaker 6: we're gonna see on display this week. I don't think
- 46:06Speaker 6: he has it in his bag right now, even though
- 46:09Speaker 6: he is the defending Open champion, of the champion Golfer
- 46:12Speaker 6: of the year, as they say.
- 46:14Speaker 2: I like Roy McRoy now with that.
- 46:17Speaker 6: Guys like Matthew Fitzpatrick, he's had an incredible season. He's
- 46:23Speaker 6: a gamer as well. You know, he's a US Open champion.
- 46:28Speaker 6: I really could see him contending this week. He's a
- 46:31Speaker 6: guy to look out for Colin Morricawa. He won the
- 46:36Speaker 6: Open championship twenty twenty one, you know, beat out Jordan
- 46:40Speaker 6: Speith and Louis Usasan and the conditions were pretty benign
- 46:44Speaker 6: that week. I don't think the win will be up
- 46:45Speaker 6: too much this week, so I could definitely see Maricawa,
- 46:48Speaker 6: who has been kind of flying under the radar this season,
- 46:51Speaker 6: pulling through and winning a championship. Sam Burns, who was
- 46:54Speaker 6: my other pick to win the US Open, you know,
- 46:57Speaker 6: finish one behind wind them Clark. He just had a kid,
- 46:59Speaker 6: So congrats to Sam Burns and his wife on their daughter.
- 47:04Speaker 6: If he is you know able to you know, lock In,
- 47:08Speaker 6: I can't imagine what it was like to have a
- 47:09Speaker 6: kid and then fly over across the Atlantic. His game
- 47:13Speaker 6: has been as good as anybody else on the planet
- 47:16Speaker 6: right now, so you know, next to Roy, I like
- 47:19Speaker 6: the game of Fitzpatrick. I like what we're seeing out
- 47:22Speaker 6: of Sam Burns. And then to their names real quick.
- 47:24Speaker 6: Justin Rose remember he made his amateur debut I believe
- 47:28Speaker 6: ninety eight at Royal Birkdale. And then Chris got her
- 47:32Speaker 6: up who won last week, the former Oklahoma Sooner and
- 47:37Speaker 6: Rutger Scarlet Knight, who won the Scotch Open a year ago.
- 47:41Speaker 6: He has a low ballflight. This course sets up very
- 47:43Speaker 6: well for him.
- 47:45Speaker 2: I know you're you're a big fan of the history
- 47:48Speaker 2: of the game as well.
- 47:51Speaker 1: The athletic is saying perhaps the most famous moment at
- 47:57Speaker 1: Royal Birkdale was not an Open championship. It was what
- 48:03Speaker 1: is commonly in golf circles known as the concession.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Do you know what that is?
- 48:07Speaker 1: Yeah, with Tony Jacqueline and Jack Nicholas very good nineteen
- 48:10Speaker 1: sixty nine Ryder Cup. Jack Nicholas conceded a short putt
- 48:15Speaker 1: to Jacqueline to have the competition finish in a tie.
- 48:19Speaker 1: If he had said no, you got to put that
- 48:20Speaker 1: out and he missed it, then the Americans wins that
- 48:23Speaker 1: the concession has long been an example the very best
- 48:26Speaker 1: in sportsmanship. As it was said there, I think Lee
- 48:31Speaker 1: Trevino won one of his two Open Championships at Birkdale.
- 48:36Speaker 1: The last time the Open Championship was contested at Birkdale,
- 48:40Speaker 1: it was twenty seventeen. You remember who won that, of course,
- 48:42Speaker 1: Jordan Spith three shots over Matt Coocher. And then they
- 48:47Speaker 1: point out that some of the notable names atop the
- 48:51Speaker 1: leader board or among the top of the leaderboard that week.
- 48:54Speaker 2: Who will be teeing it up this week?
- 48:56Speaker 1: Hot toong Lee who finished third, McElroy finished tigh for fourth,
- 49:00Speaker 1: Brooks Koepka time for six at at the at the Open.
- 49:06Speaker 1: And and then the other thing they talk about is
- 49:08Speaker 1: Burkedale is not a real long layout, short for a
- 49:11Speaker 1: par seventy and small greens compared to other Open Championship sites.
- 49:18Speaker 1: How do you think that will play?
- 49:19Speaker 6: Yeah, so it won't be a course where you need
- 49:23Speaker 6: driver on every hole. And I'm curious to see how
- 49:26Speaker 6: the golfers attack this golf course because with it being
- 49:28Speaker 6: so firm and fast, you know, if the ball is
- 49:31Speaker 6: really rolling out, you know I talked about, you know,
- 49:33Speaker 6: Speed's hitting his five ron three hundred yards. Less than
- 49:36Speaker 6: you want to do is find yourself in one of
- 49:37Speaker 6: those stairway pop bunkers, right, because then you're you're losing
- 49:40Speaker 6: a stroke there. So will we see guys who you
- 49:43Speaker 6: know you typically you think they're gonna liket to hit
- 49:45Speaker 6: and iron off the tee. But if they're so worried
- 49:47Speaker 6: about the ball roll out into a fairway, what we
- 49:50Speaker 6: now see guys just take driver and just bash it
- 49:53Speaker 6: down the fareaway and if it finds the rough and
- 49:55Speaker 6: the thick stuff, then you know, maybe to just try
- 49:57Speaker 6: it and punch out. So I'm curious to see how
- 49:59Speaker 6: it sets up, because initially it seemed like a course
- 50:02Speaker 6: where obviously you don't need your driver to score well
- 50:05Speaker 6: or play well. So if guys have irons in their hands,
- 50:08Speaker 6: and it's gonna favor more of the ball strikers. But
- 50:12Speaker 6: with a being so firm and fast, we're gonna see
- 50:14Speaker 6: guys maybe just you know, kind of take the Wyndham
- 50:16Speaker 6: Clark approach he had at Shinnacock, where hey, I'm gonna
- 50:19Speaker 6: hit driver and I'm just gonna hope I get a
- 50:21Speaker 6: good lie in the rough. And most of the time
- 50:24Speaker 6: Wyndham Clark got a good line in the rough and
- 50:26Speaker 6: was able to get up and down for par sometimes
- 50:28Speaker 6: even birdie. So you know, I want to see how
- 50:31Speaker 6: it'll play out, because truly, I do hope it's an
- 50:34Speaker 6: iron test, because that's where we see some of the
- 50:36Speaker 6: best golf and the creativity come out, and where it
- 50:38Speaker 6: favors guys like Scotti Scheffler or Roy McRoy, the true artist,
- 50:42Speaker 6: the true shot creators.
- 50:43Speaker 2: So we'll see how it looks this week.
- 50:45Speaker 1: In this piece that I read from the Athletic, they
- 50:47Speaker 1: talked about that a couple of the notable exceptions to
- 50:50Speaker 1: it otherwise being a shorter course. The short par four
- 50:55Speaker 1: fifth hole is being has been rewarked since the last
- 50:58Speaker 1: time they had it there make it more in keeping
- 51:00Speaker 1: with the standards of the course, and they say the
- 51:03Speaker 1: prevailing win will be in the player's faces, so club
- 51:06Speaker 1: selection off the teague will be interesting on that hole.
- 51:09Speaker 1: The fifteenth hole has become a long par three at
- 51:13Speaker 1: two hundred and forty one yards and should be a
- 51:16Speaker 1: test of player's timing and trajectory control. On the finishing
- 51:22Speaker 1: nine and then number eighteen they call it a big
- 51:25Speaker 1: boy par four. It's over five hundred yards, it's a
- 51:29Speaker 1: part four and should make for a nervy finish, So
- 51:32Speaker 1: that's obviously where driver really comes in handy.
- 51:35Speaker 6: Yeah, it's almost a completely different back nine from when
- 51:38Speaker 6: Jordan Speeth won it in twenty seventeen. They took out
- 51:41Speaker 6: the par three fourteenth hole, they moved up the par
- 51:46Speaker 6: five fifteenth hole up to fourteen, and they built a
- 51:49Speaker 6: brand new par three Craig on the fifteen to two
- 51:51Speaker 6: hundred and forty one yard par three they're talking about,
- 51:55Speaker 6: and then renovated seventeen eighteen the fifth hole as well,
- 51:59Speaker 6: which will be a fun I have able Part four.
- 52:01Speaker 6: Scotty Scheffer said yesterday and Monday, and you know, I
- 52:04Speaker 6: don't think he was intentionally throwing shade, but he said,
- 52:07Speaker 6: with this renovation, there's certain holes that look like they're
- 52:11Speaker 6: on a different golf course. So interesting, and that typically
- 52:15Speaker 6: will happened when you know, you renovate a link style
- 52:18Speaker 6: golf course like that. You know, they added more that
- 52:20Speaker 6: the green complex has got a little bit more severe
- 52:23Speaker 6: than in past. But again, Craig, when you have a
- 52:26Speaker 6: course that's so short like this, then really you're only
- 52:30Speaker 6: you know, the golf courses only the fence really can
- 52:32Speaker 6: be the greens, and then how high you go the
- 52:35Speaker 6: rough up next to the fairways, right, and link style
- 52:38Speaker 6: golf isn't like that. They'll have dunes and fascue, but
- 52:41Speaker 6: they're not going to grow the rough up like a
- 52:42Speaker 6: PGA Championship or a US Open. So they have altered
- 52:46Speaker 6: the green complex a little bit.
- 52:47Speaker 5: Here.
- 52:48Speaker 6: They're not watering the golf course, but they are watering
- 52:50Speaker 6: the greens, so they may be a bit more receptive
- 52:53Speaker 6: compared to the firm and fast fairways. But I'm still
- 52:56Speaker 6: excited for the test. I think we're due for one
- 53:01Speaker 6: of the best Open Championships in a while, because I mean,
- 53:03Speaker 6: the last couple Open championships have been runaway Winter Scotty
- 53:06Speaker 6: last year, Xander two years ago, Brian Harmon, Shane Lowry.
- 53:12Speaker 6: I mean the best one we had was twenty twenty two,
- 53:14Speaker 6: and when Cam Smith shot that final round sixty two,
- 53:17Speaker 6: I believe at Saint Andrews to come up and surpass
- 53:20Speaker 6: Roy Macware, that was the last time we really we've
- 53:22Speaker 6: had a US Open or an Open Champion winner where
- 53:25Speaker 6: they did not start as the final the fifty fifty
- 53:30Speaker 6: four hole leader. So I'm hoping we get something exciting
- 53:33Speaker 6: this week, and in the course is certainly setting up
- 53:34Speaker 6: for it. The weather should be exceptional as well.
- 53:37Speaker 1: All Right, you told us who you like is the
- 53:39Speaker 1: favorites and those to watch, like a Moricowa and some
- 53:43Speaker 1: of the other ones in a Matt Fitzpatrick, give me
- 53:47Speaker 1: a dark horse, somebody that we're not really thinking that
- 53:51Speaker 1: much about. I mean, I'm not saying Todd Hamilton dark hole. Yes, sir,
- 53:54Speaker 1: what was it Ben Curtis, Ben Curtis. Yeah, ones that
- 53:58Speaker 1: won a major and were never heard from again. But somebody,
- 54:03Speaker 1: somebody that we're really not thinking about that much. But
- 54:06Speaker 1: maybe he's somebody who's been playing well of late or
- 54:08Speaker 1: had some recent success or you think whose game might
- 54:12Speaker 1: translate well to Birkdale And even though a dark horse
- 54:16Speaker 1: might have a real shot to win.
- 54:18Speaker 6: I mentioned Matthew Fitzpatrick. How about his brother Alex Okapatrick,
- 54:22Speaker 6: who remember earned PJ Tour status after winning the team
- 54:27Speaker 6: event Deserves Classic at Louisiana And a lot of people
- 54:30Speaker 6: thought that's a joke. How is he able to earn
- 54:33Speaker 6: his PJ Tour card when he's winning as a team
- 54:36Speaker 6: effect Well, since he earned that, that that when he
- 54:40Speaker 6: was able to get full status in the PJ Tour. Craig,
- 54:42Speaker 6: He's not nothing but contend in every tournament and had
- 54:45Speaker 6: a great finish the PGA, had a great finish at
- 54:50Speaker 6: the US Open at Shinnecock, just finish outside his brother.
- 54:53Speaker 6: He's top ten in a lot of centatra events. And
- 54:56Speaker 6: you know his ball striking obviously, you know he is
- 54:59Speaker 6: an England lad, English lad, but he has he has
- 55:01Speaker 6: great ball striking ability. Hits it low as a great stinger.
- 55:05Speaker 6: I mean, this is a type of tournament, type of
- 55:08Speaker 6: event that should fit his game. I believe he made
- 55:11Speaker 6: the cut here last year at the Open Championship as well,
- 55:15Speaker 6: and he's playing great golf. He's backed it up since
- 55:17Speaker 6: him and Matt won the Zurich Classics. So that's the
- 55:19Speaker 6: name to watch. I mentioned justin Rose. You know, he's
- 55:24Speaker 6: getting closer and closer than fifty years old. But hey,
- 55:26Speaker 6: there's been you know, Tom Watson was what fifty hell
- 55:29Speaker 6: was Tom Watson when he almost won sixty sixty? Yeah,
- 55:32Speaker 6: fifty nine to sixty.
- 55:33Speaker 2: I thought he was gonna win.
- 55:34Speaker 1: But then when he got on the last, so I thought,
- 55:35Speaker 1: you know, the one thing that hurt Tom Watson late
- 55:38Speaker 1: in this game was the short putt. Yeah, and I thought,
- 55:41Speaker 1: and if he had made that short putt, he was
- 55:42Speaker 1: gonna win. Kind of like what was it, Tony Jacquelin, No,
- 55:45Speaker 1: Doug Sanders for folks who google it if you've never
- 55:49Speaker 1: seen it. Doug Sanders and his I think his lavender
- 55:52Speaker 1: sweater and lavender's shoes missed an eighteen inch putt and
- 55:57Speaker 1: it went when eighteen old playoff the next day and
- 55:59Speaker 1: Jack Nicholas took it.
- 55:59Speaker 2: From I think nineteen seventy maybe that's right.
- 56:03Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean it's it's like eighteen inches and
- 56:06Speaker 1: I think Henry at Alan was the famed British governor.
- 56:09Speaker 2: Oh my world.
- 56:10Speaker 6: But I say all that, and I think, Craig, if
- 56:12Speaker 6: you look back, you know, trying to think of the
- 56:16Speaker 6: last time the Open Championship was won by someone from
- 56:21Speaker 6: the United Kingdom. You know, it may be because you
- 56:25Speaker 6: have you have Scottie Xander Harmon Can Smith from Australia, right,
- 56:30Speaker 6: I mean, Jake, you can probably you'll fact check me here.
- 56:33Speaker 6: I'm trying to think of who else has won the
- 56:35Speaker 6: Open Championships recent history. Obviously Speed Sack Johnson, going back
- 56:40Speaker 6: to Rory Bullinari in twenty eighteen, you know, and Rory
- 56:44Speaker 6: technically is Irish.
- 56:45Speaker 2: I believe he's from Northern Ireland. He's from Northern Ireland,
- 56:47Speaker 2: which is part of the United Yeah.
- 56:48Speaker 3: Yeah, you asked about the UK.
- 56:49Speaker 6: Yeah, the last English player that won the Open Championship
- 56:52Speaker 6: would be who would that be?
- 56:54Speaker 3: Would that be nineteen ninety two? Is your hint?
- 56:57Speaker 2: Okay?
- 57:00Speaker 5: Uh?
- 57:01Speaker 3: Multi time Claire Juugh winner really in nineteen ninety two?
- 57:06Speaker 2: Yep?
- 57:06Speaker 6: Yep, yeah, okay, so yeah, so can can Justin Rose
- 57:12Speaker 6: or Matthew Fitzpatrick, maybe Alex can one of those guys
- 57:15Speaker 6: snap it? Ken Rory win this second Open championship. You
- 57:18Speaker 6: know he's playing great former. Will it be another American?
- 57:22Speaker 6: It should be a great weekend story. And guys run
- 57:25Speaker 6: the furge of history. Because if bryceon Deshamba misses the cut,
- 57:28Speaker 6: he will have swept all four majors this year, and
- 57:31Speaker 6: missing the cut would be the first first multi major
- 57:36Speaker 6: champion winner before the age of to cut in Like,
- 57:40Speaker 6: I forget Justin Ray had the stat but he's on
- 57:42Speaker 6: the verge of history here, on the absolute verge of history.
- 57:45Speaker 6: So we will be hate watching Bryson and Shamba this week.
- 57:48Speaker 6: I thought you, I thought you started to like him.
- 57:50Speaker 5: I do.
- 57:51Speaker 2: Or it's his history, you know, we got you gotta
- 57:52Speaker 2: root for.
- 57:53Speaker 1: History, right, Okay, all right, so it's love hate with
- 57:55Speaker 1: you with with the Shamba. Yeah yeah, uh do you
- 58:00Speaker 1: what your All Star game?
- 58:01Speaker 6: I did not, Actually I did not. Really, I'm kinda
- 58:05Speaker 6: I'm a little bit out on all Star games in
- 58:08Speaker 6: all sports. I'm out.
- 58:11Speaker 2: Was great.
- 58:12Speaker 6: I love going back to the old, the old format,
- 58:14Speaker 6: and I loved him shutting up the Philly crowd.
- 58:18Speaker 7: But I'm out on All Star Games. Didn't see Jacob Latz,
- 58:21Speaker 7: you know, get a strikeout. Yeah, let's go Rangers. Rangers,
- 58:24Speaker 7: and we've got Jared Sandler coming on next day. Anything
- 58:27Speaker 7: we need to ask ar from you.
- 58:30Speaker 6: The top of my head. But in first place? Yeah, barely.
- 58:34Speaker 6: And how many games are where? How many games are
- 58:36Speaker 6: we behind the Dodgers in the win column? Don't worry
- 58:39Speaker 6: about twenty five thirty.
- 58:40Speaker 1: You have to worry about seeing the Dodgers and first place,
- 58:44Speaker 1: yeah right, You wouldn't have to worry about seeing the
- 58:46Speaker 1: Dodgers until October the World Series if it happens, and
- 58:49Speaker 1: i'm'm even sure they're gonna win, so yeah, well we'll see.
- 58:52Speaker 2: That's all right.
- 58:53Speaker 1: That's Cameron Parkers with their Open Championship preview and uh
- 58:59Speaker 1: Argentina has really been pressing the attack on England.
- 59:03Speaker 2: Oh yeah, as the match has progressed two.
- 59:05Speaker 3: Really good chances during our conversation about the the Open
- 59:09Speaker 3: Championship and Pickford has made two really good saves.
- 59:13Speaker 1: So it's the one nil England in the seventy seventh minute.
- 59:17Speaker 1: Now of action on that goal in the fifty fifth
- 59:20Speaker 1: minute from Gordon off of the turnover in the back
- 59:24Speaker 1: end by Argentina.
- 59:25Speaker 2: So we'll keep you posted on that.
- 59:27Speaker 1: More coming up here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 59:29Speaker 1: the Zone of the Eye Radio app.
- 59:32Speaker 3: Have to play a.
- 59:33Speaker 6: Pass Rogers guitarget tracking it over his shoulder, ack about
- 59:36Speaker 6: a place, telling people the job not done as it
- 59:38Speaker 6: was helded by rights Rogers.
- 59:40Speaker 8: Chances to pass hunts.
- 59:46Speaker 9: In the second half of the semifinals.
- 59:52Speaker 6: Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the Voice
- 59:54Speaker 6: of the Longhorns.
- 59:55Speaker 2: Craig Way. Follow Craig on social media's porn fors.
- 1:00:01Speaker 10: You need somebody in there home, Well.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: Maybe it's just Argentina's feeling a little bit lonely.
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: Right now.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: It's doll one nothing, one nil on that goal. You
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: heard John Strong's call from Fox there on the Anthony
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Gordon goal which was set up by a mistake, made
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: them back a giveaway and then Johnny on the spot
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: Gordon came in to whack it home and it's.
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: One nil England.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: They're now in the eighty third minute, and of course
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: there'll be stoppage time probably I'm going to guess in
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: the eight to ten minute range, and so We'll see
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: if England holds on to face Spain on Sunday in
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: the final, and if that happens, then Argentina and France
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: and the third place match, which I think everybody thought
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: was going to be the final on Sunday. If it
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: happens that way, I think people probably most Cameron said
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: he picked thing On to win.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: Yeah, and I talked before the tournament with and he
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: came on the show frequently while you were on vacation.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: Eric Goodman, who writes with the Verday Report the Chronicle,
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: and he's been at the International Broadcast Center for FIFA
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: in Dallas. He's one of the few people I heard
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: that had kind of picked Spain before the tournament, but
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: he admitted during the tournament France was giving him a
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: little more confidence than Spain was, just in terms of
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: the way they look throughout the eye test. But Spain
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: had this ability Craig to kind of strangle the game
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: and hold possession, frustrate opponents and bleed time away quickly.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: And that's gonna be a tough test for whoever comes
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: through this game.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: You know, a comp might be what the American League
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: pitching did to the National League last night.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: In the All Star Game.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: That's one thing a cop might be what the Carolina
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: Hurricanes did throughout the Stanley Cup playoffs. The defense just
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: suffocated the opponents all the way, inclusive of Vegas in
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: the last three games of that Stanley Cup final.
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: I as a Capitals fan and as somebody who covered
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: the Capitals in the twenty twenty four to twenty five season,
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: I hated facing the Hurricanes because you were probably going
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: to take about half your amount of shots as usual,
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: and if they got a lead, you knew you were
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: behind the eight ball. Every goal they were up, I
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: felt like two.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: And that's what happened to France yesterday. They just didn't
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: get many opportunities, let alone be able to cash things
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: in on that. By the way, here's another soccer note.
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: I think you've probably seen this. It came down yesterday.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: You might have seen this, maybe not. And for other folks,
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: and some folks may not care unless you care about soccer.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: Kind of a big development has happened with television with soccer.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: If you're from familiar with soccer, you'd be familiar with
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: the Bundesliga. That's the main major league of soccer in Germany.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: The top league in Germany. Top men play in that
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: league there home to some of the powers in Europe
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: like Bayern Munich and Russia Dortmund, and there's several US
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: men's national team players who are playing in that They
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: just did a deal to have their matches televised in
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: the US in a deal that's going to earn them
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: one hundred million dollars over five years on a new
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: deal where this company verse En that got it is
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: going to split these matches between the USA Network and Fandango,
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: that's the online platform most known for publishing movie information
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: and then selling movie theater tickets same ones as well.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: So and so they've got a new deal.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: And for the past six years Bundesliga matches have aired
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: primarily on ESPN Plus.
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: But they're losing them. They're losing out to them.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: Meanwhile, it's level in Atlanta. Argentina has squared it.
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: With England that they have Craig. They got a corner
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: kick and took it short. Messi laid it off to
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: his teammate Enzo Fernandez, who looks to be about twenty
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: three twenty four yards away. He's outside the area and
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: he just bends the ball beautifully into the middle left
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: pocket of the net to tie this thing at one.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: Okay, this thing could well be headed for extra time
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: because right now they're in the eighty seventh minute. There
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: will be obviously stoppage time that will be added, but
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: if nothing is scored there, then they will go to
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: extra time.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: As they call it. It's not sudden death.
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: It's thirty minutes of overtime split into two fifteen minute
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: halves and then they change sides of the feel after
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: that and do it. It's not it's not a sudden death.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: There's no golden goal. They play the full thirty minutes
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: and if they're still tied, then it goes to penalty kicks.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: If one scores and they make it all the way through,
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: then they hold.
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: On and they get to win.
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: So anyway, one one now Argentina and England. We'll be
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: back to wrap up our number two on thirteen hunderd
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: the zone.
- 1:05:36Speaker 6: That's the upspens trying to find space for that left
- 1:05:38Speaker 6: foot into the battle left.
- 1:05:39Speaker 9: Up for that.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: Argentina left find a tie the game.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: Yeah, Argentina seems to find a way. That was a
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: goal by Enzo Fernandez to tie the score. One we
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: mentioned but just a moment ago, it's happened again. Lightning
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: has struck again and the indomitable Landel Messi did not score,
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: but he laid off a goal to Martinez, who.
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: Off.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: I was really surprised that England backed so far off
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: of Messi, and he laid in a beautiful ball and
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: it was headed in by Martinez and Argentina leads to
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: to one. They're in stoppage time now. They've got about
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: seven minutes to go in stoppage time. So England, which
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: in the what eighty seventh eighty seventh minute held a
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: one mill lead, now finds itself trailing to one.
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: Don't you love the World Cup, Craig? How can people
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: kind of watch this and decide? Now I'm good. I'll
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: wait another four years to try again.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: Fernandez in the eighty fifth minute, Martinez in the.
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: Ninetieth you want you want to hear it taken into
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: the break?
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: Why not Messy try again?
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: Metaina? Stop Entaina, I'll try and rack up the Telemundo calls.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, that'd be fun. All right, we got one
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: more hour of the show to go. We'll let you
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: know how that wraps up. Also, we'll talk to more
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: Major League BASEBA, a recap of the All Star Game,
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: and coming up in this final hour, also, Jared's handler,
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: the Rangers Radio and Television Networks joins us to talk
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: some Ranger ball.
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: This is thirteen under the.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: Zone, third and final hour of the program All Sports
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. Maybe you're not a
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: fan of the World Cup, we're international soccer. Maybe there's
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: not enough scoring for you, maybe there's not enough action strategy.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: I understand that that's a traditional, hard boiled American sports
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: sports fans approach to it.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: I understand where you're coming from on that.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: But the drama that happens in this is at times
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: not to be believed. We played for you a little
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: while ago that the first Gold match from the first
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: half for England and he had a one mill lead
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: at that. Then right near the top of the hour,
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: we played you John Strong's call on Fox. So the
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: equal lizing goal for Argentina. Now what we're going to
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: do is I want you to hear this. First of all,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: this is the great, the International Hall of Fame soccer
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: broadcaster on his contour with his call of the equal
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: lie icing goal for Argentina.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: And then we got something else for you to here.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: But first, this is how crazy it is, certainly for
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: those who follow it and are into it from down south.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: And here's Andre's tourist call by.
- 1:09:16Speaker 11: Missie putting good down why night, But Ian's looking.
- 1:09:48Speaker 9: Go the cartino, the cartaino Loris fords it your point off.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: He become in it to me, I tell you.
- 1:10:17Speaker 11: No wordto.
- 1:10:21Speaker 10: Vigo.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: So that tied the score?
- 1:10:26Speaker 5: Uh?
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: And who had the who was it that the tying score?
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: Again? That was Enzo Fernandez had to go ahead goal
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: in stoppage time against Egypt.
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: Okay, and he scored that in the eighty fifth minute
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: to tie the score at one. Five minutes later this happened.
- 1:10:46Speaker 11: I got it that it the call, the promise, a
- 1:10:50Speaker 11: messy premide of pens Ha Marc ha, marc messy ha,
- 1:10:57Speaker 11: gonna tell you.
- 1:11:13Speaker 12: Go go go.
- 1:11:42Speaker 11: I'm starting to Contino. I'll see dansant an al good
- 1:11:48Speaker 11: lot of ita Juonatino who a day.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: As you can guess, that was a goal, a hitd
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: goal for Argentina. Five minutes who scored the goal.
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: Ahead Latara Martinez.
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: With which has now become the game winner. It has
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: gone final. That was in stoppage time, Argentina defeat England.
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: As they would say in the plural singulars, it was
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: a great moment there Harry Kane and Lanel Messi congratulating
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: one another. And Messi will have one more opportunity to
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: win one more World Cup.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: England's run is over.
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: And what did you say? Your friend's watching in Germany.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: This is pretty funny what you said. This is great.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: So my friend is on a trip to Germany. He's
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: been watching this game and the crowd split, the fun
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: atmosphere they're watching. The entire broadcast of the game is
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: in German. Yeah, but when that second goal went in,
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: he said, well, they just said something in play in English.
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: Sixty years of.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: Hurt because it was nineteen sixty six, the only time
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: England's been in the World Cup final and they won
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: it that year for West Germany. We talked about that yesterday.
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: It was at Wembley Stadium, England was hosting that year
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: and they won four to two in that championship.
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: They will not be going back to the final.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: When they were up won nothing in the eighty fifth minutes,
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: the Messian and assist on both the goals.
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: Messi assisted both.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: The first was just the right pass rolled out into space.
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: The second just a perfect cross just like right head finished,
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: just like he did to save them against Egypt.
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: Yeah, So game winning assists and back to back games
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: after Argentina trailed with under ten minutes to go in
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: regulation and back.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: To back games.
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: Amazing.
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: So it's gonna be a movie about this.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: So to be Argentina against Spain on Sunday in the
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: World Cup Final. England and France will meet in the
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: third place match on Saturday, and heartbreak for England because
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: but they had really gotten defensive in the last ten
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: minutes of the match, just laying back and Argentina was
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: just wailing away at him.
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: And finally we're able to break through.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: And uh so Argentina chance to defend its World Cup
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: title on Sunday against Spain. So we'll see how that goes. Okay,
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: uh Coming up later on this hour, we'll talk from
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: Ranger Baseball and we'll do that with Jared Sandler from
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: the Rangers Radio and Television network, and he'll join us
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: uh to talk about the Rangers at the All Star
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: break and he'll h you know, he'll talk about that.
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: Also the Rangers. There was an announcement today that the
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: Rangers are switching their streaming partners, and we'll ask him
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: about that coming up as well, so we'll we'll do that. Uh,
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: today is one of those days. Other than what happened
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: in Atlanta with the England Argentina, today is one of
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: those days that you call one of the dead days
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: in sports because other than some minor league baseball, I
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: guess NBA summer league basketball, maybe pass.
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: Uh, well, actually don't pass. You don't see a lot
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: of passing in the summer lege. So other than that,
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: nothing the sp Awards or tonight, Greg.
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: Pass never been a big fan of that.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: The Jim Valvomer speech was probably the highlight moment in
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: the history.
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: Stuart Scott of a speech there too, Yeah, that was good.
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: And Craig Sager, they they all three, you know, headed
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: down the home stretch of their lives being being taken
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: away from them ultimately physically by cancer. So yeah, Robin
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: Roberts gave a great speech as she had recovered from
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: it as well. But a lot of the other stuff,
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: a lot of the moments that you give for whatever
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: the best sports moment or this that's very, very subjective
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: off of that, So I'm not as much into that
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: off of that, but some people may like it. They
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: certainly may like it more than watching international soccer.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: I would rather watch a great soccer match like that,
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: And they're going crazy in Bueno Saturday's because they're showing that,
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: you know, in Argentina and and.
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: In all places.
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: So well, you watch something like this, you're not so
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: pumped up about seeing best sports moment of the year.
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: And it's you know, Indiana versus Miami doesn't feel as
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: big as this right now. But of course the SPN
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: the SP's right, it's mostly focused on their Yeah, yeah, right,
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: and and uh, you know, I I get it, I
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: understand that. But so it's Spurs fans might not want
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: to watch.
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's true as well. All right, a tremendous moment.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: They're off of that, all right. Coming up a recap
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: of the Baseball All Star Game. We'll hear from the
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: TOO managers, also from Cody Bellinger, right, the MVP. Do
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: we have that we can?
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: Okay, all right, so we'll do that as well.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: We'll continue here on a yacht Rock Wednesday on Sports
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the ir radio app.
- 1:17:13Speaker 5: You don't care.
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: Here on a yacht rock Wednesday.
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: With America with Venturi Highway. As we continue hitting you
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: through this afternoon. Hopefully you're staying high and dry about
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: it out of the way from the rain that's coming
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: around the area. Major League Baseball will pick up it's schedule.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: What there's one game tomorrow, is that right?
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: Get the Mets are playing let's say the Braves tomorrow.
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: I'll check on that now the Rangers play the Brakes
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: because we're going to visit with Jared Sandler.
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: Oh, the Mets are playing the Phillies tomorrow. Yeah, it's
- 1:17:58Speaker 3: at six o'clock.
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: Okay, And again coming up in a little bit, we're
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: gonna visit with Jared Sandler from the Rangers radio and
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: television never were to talk about the Rangers who will
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: begin the second half of the season, or they figured
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: it second half of the season anyway in Atlanta against
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: the Braves, the leaders in the National League East. Although
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: Atlanta kind of stumbled to the finish line there in
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: the first half. Off of that, so did the Dodgers
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: in the West. They got swept at home by Arizona.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: The difference is LA's up by eleven and a half
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: in the division, where Atlanta's leader for Philadelphia, who finished
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: the first half hot, is only two games.
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: So I wouldn't have believed that if you told me
- 1:18:35Speaker 3: a month ago the lead would be two.
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: Yeah, they were way out and they had the best
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: record in baseball for over a month and then gave
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: a lot of it back. Last night the American League
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: won four to nothing and kind of dominated some things.
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: One of the themes that happened was when Junior Campan
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: Arrow got hit by It was O'Reilly from the Cardinals,
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: wasn't it.
- 1:19:03Speaker 3: Yeah, Riley O'Brien.
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: Riley O'Brien hit him in the in the hand.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: Fortunately there was no real damage done, maybe a bruise
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: or something like that, but the MRI and the X
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: rays were all negative and so that's good. So this
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: is just an example of how when reporters are covering
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: a game sometimes I don't know if they're looking for
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: a different slant or a different angle on something, or
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: if they're just as the saying would go eat up
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: with dumbass in terms of asking questions.
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: So, uh, Dave.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: Roberts, the Nation League manager, manager of the Dodgers was
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: asked if it was unusual for O'Brien, a closer for
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: the Cardinals to pitch that early in the game. It's
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: an All Star game, right, But here's Dave Roberts on it.
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: No, you know, I think it was it just got
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: away from him and you know, pitching trying to line
- 1:20:07Speaker 4: pitching up for the All Star Game when you got
- 1:20:09Speaker 4: starters that are starters and coming out of the pen
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: or relievers that are used to going later in a game.
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: I think the main thing is that I heard that
- 1:20:18Speaker 4: the X rays were negative. So Junior came out of
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: it just fine, So thank goodness and very grateful.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: That he came out Okay.
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: He ended up pitching a clean any after that, and
- 1:20:29Speaker 4: I know he was happy to know that Junior didn't
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: have you know, there was no fracture or anything like that.
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: And yeah, it's never easy for a guy who's pitching
- 1:20:37Speaker 4: late to pitch early and things like that.
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: So whoever the reporter was, and I don't know who
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: it was, but whoever it was, he was like a
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: dog with a bone because he actually asked Dave Roberts
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: two or three questions about that. Then it's the same reporter.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: He asked John Schneider about that, about what went through
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: his mind when Kamanero went down after being hit.
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: By the pitch.
- 1:21:01Speaker 13: Yeah, that's what the last thing anyone wants to see,
- 1:21:03Speaker 13: whether you're here sitting at home. I know X rays
- 1:21:07Speaker 13: on Junior's pinky were negative and everything seems to be okay.
- 1:21:10Speaker 13: And I shot Kevin cash attacks kind of right after
- 1:21:14Speaker 13: that happened, and he was appreciated of that. So we'll
- 1:21:16Speaker 13: see them. We'll see them in about a week. So
- 1:21:19Speaker 13: I hope Junior's all right. He's an unbelievable baseball player
- 1:21:22Speaker 13: and even better person. So you're trying to do what's
- 1:21:26Speaker 13: right by everyone. That's the last thing that you want
- 1:21:28Speaker 13: to see, like I said, But glad he's okay.
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: Yeah, it's going to be interesting when the Phillies do
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: get together with the race there the Phillies being hot
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: within two games of first and the race actually lead
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: the American League East right now, all right?
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: So there was that.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: Continue with the pitching theme, Schneiders asked, what did the
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: pitching dominance? Remember the Nash League managed to cobble together
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: a grand total of three hits and a walk that
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: was hit and so it was the first shutout since
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: what was it twenty thirteen? I believe they said it was.
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: I believe it was the first shutout in thirteen years.
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: I think I read that or heard that maybe last night.
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: But you know, what did it say about that?
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: Yeah, twenty thirteen. It was also the American League and
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: it was at City Field.
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: Okay, so you know, so what did you know?
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: What did the shutout mean and the pitching dominance say
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: about this game? Schneider was asked.
- 1:22:26Speaker 13: That was impressive from everyone, really, you know, really happy
- 1:22:30Speaker 13: for Dylan, you know, getting three strikeouts in the first.
- 1:22:32Speaker 13: And I haven't listened to the whole commentary yet. I'm
- 1:22:35Speaker 13: sure it was pretty entertaining with him in Langler's talking,
- 1:22:38Speaker 13: But it's it's the game now, you know. Guy's stuff
- 1:22:41Speaker 13: is unbelievable. To see Luisa Riye strikeout and Yanni Diaz
- 1:22:45Speaker 13: strike out a couple of times, it's just kind of
- 1:22:47Speaker 13: like a you know, you never see it, you know,
- 1:22:50Speaker 13: so it speaks volumes to how good these guys are.
- 1:22:52Speaker 13: Hitting is at an all time high. And I think
- 1:22:56Speaker 13: as the game kind of went, I think the bullpen
- 1:22:57Speaker 13: guy's kind of fed off at a little bit guys
- 1:22:59Speaker 13: or guys coming out of the bullpen. They were all
- 1:23:01Speaker 13: excited coming off the mound. So it speaks volumes to
- 1:23:03Speaker 13: how good the pitching is, for sure, Yeah, yeah, sure does.
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: Then Schneider was asked how much did the early lead
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: They got three runs, remember in the first inning, which
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: two of those coming in on a single by Cody Bellinger,
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: which wound up naming him the MVP. But how much
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: did the early lead help the team?
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: It was nice.
- 1:23:26Speaker 13: Because you get out to a lead, it gives Dylan
- 1:23:28Speaker 13: a little bit of a chance to take a deep breath,
- 1:23:29Speaker 13: I think, and before the first inning. But it kind
- 1:23:32Speaker 13: of just you're always worried about guys getting at least
- 1:23:35Speaker 13: one at bat, so that's when you're making a lineup.
- 1:23:37Speaker 13: You're trying to figure all that stuff out. So it's
- 1:23:39Speaker 13: nice that you send eight guys to the plate and
- 1:23:41Speaker 13: you knew certain guys were going to get a couple
- 1:23:42Speaker 13: of bats, and you can kind of get him in,
- 1:23:44Speaker 13: get him out, and get everybody in. And that was
- 1:23:46Speaker 13: the biggest part. But against the guy like Sanchez, there
- 1:23:48Speaker 13: were some pretty good at bats, you know, even you know,
- 1:23:50Speaker 13: Bobby's walk and Shay's walk and a couple of knocks
- 1:23:53Speaker 13: from the Yankee Boys, but it was it was nice
- 1:23:55Speaker 13: to kind of do that so everyone could could get in.
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, you think about this city of Philadelphia
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: and the Phillies and Major League Baseball put on a
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: great show for the game. When the game started, the
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: guys from the Phillies did not perform very well. In fact,
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: just about all the National League guys didn't perform very well.
- 1:24:17Speaker 3: But much to the delight of everyone in DC who says,
- 1:24:21Speaker 3: why is Brandon Marsh starting this game over James Wood?
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, neither of them. Neither of those two guys
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: did very well and when they had the opportunity, but Marsh,
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: you know, Bryce Harper, who was miked up, struck out
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: while being miked up. Schwarber, same thing happened with him
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: as well. And then there was the starting pitcher, Christopher Sanchez,
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: who had been so dominant and got touched up for
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: three runs and took the loss in the first inning.
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: Dave Roberts was asked how important was it to have
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: a Philly start the game and won close because that.
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: The closer, uh.
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: Joe Johan Duran.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: Duran was about the only one who actually performed well
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: in a Philadelphia uniform.
- 1:25:08Speaker 3: By the way, Dave Roberts, he o's the Phillies.
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, So so.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: Duran closed it since his starting and and uh, you
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: know the importance of that and the Philly involvement with
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: the game.
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: It was great, you know, I think, uh, you know,
- 1:25:28Speaker 4: having him start, having Duran finished the game. It's the
- 1:25:32Speaker 4: host city and the city of Philadelphia with Major League Baseball,
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: did a fantastic job all week. And then for for
- 1:25:39Speaker 4: us to be able to get Harper in there, to
- 1:25:42Speaker 4: lead Schwarber off, and to get marsh in there, all
- 1:25:45Speaker 4: of it. I mean, honestly, we didn't win the game,
- 1:25:47Speaker 4: and then as far as the National League, but it
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: was just a great production and it was good to
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: get everyone in there. I think that with Christopher it
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: was very emotional for him pitching here, being a start
- 1:25:58Speaker 4: of the game, so I don't think that you know,
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: it's not a normal start, so he just wasn't as
- 1:26:04Speaker 4: sharp with his command as he normally is. But you know,
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: it's one of those things that it's a once in
- 1:26:10Speaker 4: a lifetime opportunity.
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: So it just kind of just happened that way.
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: And then there was another one of those dog with
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: a bone moments Sarah the reporter who asked both Dave
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: Roberts and John Schneider this basically theoretical question. Now, if
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: you've watched the All Star Game at any point over
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: the years, you do know that it is difficult for
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: every single player to play. And having said that, every
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: player did play last night, with the exception of two.
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: The only ones, well put it this way, two that
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: could have been quote unquote eligible. Justin Verlanders still on
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: the injured list, so we couldn't go. And uh, you
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: know he didn't play a pitch. Also, uh, we mentioned earlier.
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: Sale did not pitch as well. Ms Rowski didn't pitch.
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: We knew Verlander wasn't going to pitch, and Cam Schlittler
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: did not pitch. Right, those guys all did not pitch
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: because they had just worked over the weekend and h
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: Verlander's on the injured list, so they weren't going to
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: get into the ball game.
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: Yeah, and I should say one of the best pitchers
- 1:27:36Speaker 3: in baseball, Chase Burns, who didn't miss a start with
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: whatever this groin injury is, but is having quote unquote tightness,
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: decided not to pitch.
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: Well, and I'll see your Chase Burns and Ratio show.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: Ao Tommy, he didn't even make the trip there, even
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: though he was voted in as the DH, but that
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: the knee has been bothering him, so he wasn't gonna
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: and he's having a great season on the mountain, but
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: he wasn't gonna pitch.
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: He wasn't on DH. So that's a given.
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: There's going to be some guys that just don't get
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: in the game now Major League Baseball, and I give
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: a lot of credit to the managers on both sides.
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: They had a really.
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: Strident initiative to get all of the position players in
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: the ball game, and they did. Every position player played
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: in the game. It was only some pitchers who their
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: clubs did not want to pitch in inns. Now, you
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: know the guideline that if you pitched on Sunday, you're
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: not going to pitch.
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: And then there's the Zach Wheeler of it all. It
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: was passed over.
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:28:33Speaker 3: Then he was offered to be a replacement for some
- 1:28:36Speaker 3: of the injuries in the National League, right and he said, nope, nope.
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: They disrespected me, so I'm not going to do it.
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: Can you imagine the disrespect you must feel to turn
- 1:28:44Speaker 3: down a home All Star game at that age. Ye,
- 1:28:47Speaker 3: what are you doing that again?
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess maybe you feel that disrespect. Can you
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: imagine the optics not looking good off of that? And
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: he didn't, but that's Wheeler whatever. So these two managers
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: rap about this, and the theory was fomented maybe they
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: shouldn't move the game, slide the game further back or
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: further up, so you get all these guys in there.
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: And it reminds me of the old thing about the
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: thing from Star Trek two, the wrath of God. You know,
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few,
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: that sort of thing. So Roberts was asked should the
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: All Star Game move back a day to help more
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: pitchers throw?
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: Should they push it back a little bit?
- 1:29:28Speaker 4: His thought on that, I think whatever allows for the
- 1:29:32Speaker 4: best players to be available to participate is what we
- 1:29:36Speaker 4: should do.
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: So it's that's what I would hope.
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: So, however, you know, it's a bigger discussion, but yeah,
- 1:29:43Speaker 4: you want the best players to be able to be
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: to perform the All Star Game.
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: It's a very good, if oblique answer. Okay, So then
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: Schneider's asked the same thing you know, should the All
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: Star Game again, same reporter asking the questions. They move
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: it back to get more pictures of the and help
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: him throw, and he's easier said than done.
- 1:30:03Speaker 13: I think, I don't know. This is my first time
- 1:30:06Speaker 13: doing it right, so you're kind of adjusting on the fly.
- 1:30:08Speaker 13: But I think both sides, you know, you're trying to
- 1:30:10Speaker 13: just line it up and make sure you have enough coverage,
- 1:30:12Speaker 13: whether it's pitching or position players.
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: You know, we used everyone.
- 1:30:15Speaker 13: Everyone got in, which was the biggest worry today and
- 1:30:19Speaker 13: and getting through it healthy. But I think I don't
- 1:30:22Speaker 13: know the answer to that. You know, if there's a
- 1:30:24Speaker 13: way to maybe have more guys available and knowing they're
- 1:30:26Speaker 13: not going to pitch. I know that off off days
- 1:30:29Speaker 13: and the break is precious for everyone that plays every day.
- 1:30:32Speaker 13: So I don't know, but I think it's you're you're
- 1:30:36Speaker 13: kind of trying to thread the needle with the availability
- 1:30:38Speaker 13: that you do have. And I've said it a million
- 1:30:41Speaker 13: times the last couple of days. It's it's really tough
- 1:30:43Speaker 13: on the pitching coaches and and the Marlow and uh
- 1:30:46Speaker 13: Jamie over there and Doc and Donnie and Ali. You know,
- 1:30:48Speaker 13: it's hard to get everyone in and make sure it works.
- 1:30:51Speaker 13: But yeah, I don't really know the answer to that,
- 1:30:54Speaker 13: but I think it's it's really important that the fans
- 1:30:56Speaker 13: say the best players in the game.
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: Yeah, and they're going to say that right. Thing.
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: They also understand, like he said it, stuff on the
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: pitching coaches try to decide all that you're just not
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: going to get everybody in the game unless the game
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: goes fourteen to fifteen innings, and then you run the
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: risk of the Bud Selig thing of calling it a
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: tie and then really angering people.
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: You know, off of that, did they do that back
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: when the All Star Game determined home field advantage in
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: the World Series?
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: Yeah, which I thought was dumb too, because it's an exhibition.
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: Right off of that, finally, the managers were asked what
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: their takeaway was. Dave roberts hask what was the best
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: moment of the weekend for him?
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: I think the best moment is there was about eight
- 1:31:43Speaker 4: to ten of us, Ali marmaul and myself with some
- 1:31:46Speaker 4: players just were in front of Chris Sal's locker just
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: chopping it up, talking baseball. And I think that was
- 1:31:53Speaker 4: something that you know, in this day and age where
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: there's a lot of devices where just everyone would present.
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: That was a lot of fun and John Sneyder, the
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: winning manager from Toronto, asked what he will remember about
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: this weekend.
- 1:32:07Speaker 13: A lot, you know, I think for me personally, you
- 1:32:10Speaker 13: think of you know, time spent with your family. You know,
- 1:32:12Speaker 13: my wife and my kids, my parents and my brothers.
- 1:32:15Speaker 13: Is pretty cool for them to be here. I didn't
- 1:32:18Speaker 13: get to see Philly too much. You're kind of going going,
- 1:32:20Speaker 13: but it was overall, you know, it's you never know
- 1:32:23Speaker 13: when you're in this position, so you're trying to just
- 1:32:25Speaker 13: take everything in and you know special for me that
- 1:32:29Speaker 13: it was, you know, close to home and a place
- 1:32:33Speaker 13: that I'm pretty familiar with too. So I just tried
- 1:32:36Speaker 13: to enjoy it and it was definitely a fun last
- 1:32:39Speaker 13: forty eight hours.
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: Okay, So there it was, and now they go back
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: to work, which leads us to letting you know that
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: coming up, we're going to visit with Jared Sandler from
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: the Rangers Radio and TV network to talk about the Rangers.
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: The first place Texas Rangers in the American League West
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: and they have to start the post All Star Game
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: portion of the season in Atlanta against the Nation League.
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: He's leading brats. We get his thoughts on the Rangers
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: first half and the second half to come when we
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: continue on thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: here on a yacht Rock Wednesday, Here on thirteen under
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: the Zone, Craig Way with you alongside the producer Jake Herman.
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: We just heard quite a bit of recap and revamp
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: on the Baseball All Star Game. Jacob Lats had a
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: nice appearance in there when he got a big strikeout
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: in there from the Texas Rangers, speaking of which a
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: friend of ours, always really good to be able to
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: check in with a friend, Jared Sandler from the Texas
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: Rangers Television and Radio Networks, who joins, I appreciate you
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: doing this, and before we even get into talking about
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: some of the nuts and bolts of what's to come
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: for the second half of the season and all that,
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: I've been meaning to ask you this for a time
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: since the figuration, if you will, of the regional networks
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: and everything that's going on at you and the crew
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: have done a marvelous job in just kind of I'm
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: not gonna say reinventing, but what you've had to do
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: in terms of the pregame and the postgame show. So
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: I appreciate the time, and I'm curious to get your
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: thoughts on how all that kind of molded together to
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: have the cohesive pregame and post game and in game
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: things that you guys do.
- 1:34:25Speaker 8: Yeah, I appreciate it. I think a big part of
- 1:34:30Speaker 8: it is that. And I know this is gonna sound
- 1:34:32Speaker 8: super cliche, like I'm an athlete after a game on
- 1:34:34Speaker 8: the podium, But we really have.
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: A great team. And you know, we all get along.
- 1:34:40Speaker 8: All the people on air get along, and so you know,
- 1:34:44Speaker 8: it allows us to do things together, be willing to
- 1:34:48Speaker 8: do things together. And we also have a bunch of
- 1:34:52Speaker 8: people who I think are willing to fail, right, willing
- 1:34:59Speaker 8: to try things. And and you know, we've done some stuff
- 1:35:01Speaker 8: on air where it's like, oh, you know, I don't
- 1:35:03Speaker 8: know that anyone's really done this. This could make us
- 1:35:05Speaker 8: look like a bunch of idiots. It could uh, you know,
- 1:35:07Speaker 8: it could work. But we got a bunch of people
- 1:35:10Speaker 8: without egos who are are willing to try things, go
- 1:35:12Speaker 8: off the cuff, have some fun and uh and and
- 1:35:15Speaker 8: and we've had a lot of fun doing it. And
- 1:35:17Speaker 8: that's that's people on air and people on the production side.
- 1:35:20Speaker 5: As well.
- 1:35:22Speaker 8: So you know, our goal when we first started was
- 1:35:24Speaker 8: to present the game on the pre and post side,
- 1:35:27Speaker 8: you know, in a way that was more creative and
- 1:35:30Speaker 8: more fun than your standard Hey three keys to the game,
- 1:35:32Speaker 8: or score more runs and give up fewer runs and
- 1:35:35Speaker 8: not make any errors, or you know whatever generic stuff
- 1:35:38Speaker 8: that you know, a second grader knows. We wanted to
- 1:35:42Speaker 8: teach the game, we wanted to have some fun with it,
- 1:35:43Speaker 8: and hopefully been able to accomplish that. But uh, you know,
- 1:35:46Speaker 8: we we definitely appreciate people giving us a chance to
- 1:35:50Speaker 8: to do things differently because you know, we know that
- 1:35:53Speaker 8: change is not always met receptively, and I think we're
- 1:35:56Speaker 8: learning that again today with some of the changes that
- 1:35:58Speaker 8: we announced. But uh, you know, we appreciate that Rangers
- 1:36:02Speaker 8: fans have been willing to give this new way of
- 1:36:03Speaker 8: doing things a chance.
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: Before you mentioned that I do it is the personal aside.
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: You get to work with one of my favorite people
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: and producers on the planet and Patrick mcdrowsky. So yeah,
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: Pimo has said, like the guru of producing what we
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: do with high school football obviously what we've done over
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: the past several years, and so it's for folks who
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: don't know, having a really good producer, having a really
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: good director, having a good technical director, audio people.
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: I mean, it's invaluable, isn't it.
- 1:36:30Speaker 5: Yeah, No, it really is.
- 1:36:34Speaker 8: You know for people who aren't you know, they've never
- 1:36:38Speaker 8: done TV before. You know, you hear the people on air,
- 1:36:43Speaker 8: see them. There's so many more people who who you know,
- 1:36:47Speaker 8: play a role in all of this stuff. You know,
- 1:36:49Speaker 8: we're not, at least I'm not smart enough, creative enough.
- 1:36:52Speaker 8: It's sad enough to create the graphics or to you know,
- 1:36:55Speaker 8: execute some of the elements that you see executed so seamlessly.
- 1:37:01Speaker 8: And you know, you got so much going on in
- 1:37:05Speaker 8: a broadcast, you know.
- 1:37:06Speaker 5: I think one of the things that's been.
- 1:37:07Speaker 8: Really cool is, uh, you know, our our Ranger Sports
- 1:37:10Speaker 8: network social feed has shown live views or I guess
- 1:37:14Speaker 8: not live, but views of the truck while plays unfold
- 1:37:17Speaker 8: in in hindsight and you hear all the stuff going on,
- 1:37:21Speaker 8: You see all the different screens and you know, the
- 1:37:23Speaker 8: roll read and this and that and all this.
- 1:37:25Speaker 5: Lingo that I don't you know, I don't even know
- 1:37:26Speaker 5: what it means.
- 1:37:27Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:37:27Speaker 8: And that's just one part of it, right, But yeah,
- 1:37:29Speaker 8: Patrick's awesome, you know, he's you know, he's really helped
- 1:37:32Speaker 8: lead the charge on all fronts. Uh and uh, you
- 1:37:36Speaker 8: know he's someone who you know, you don't hear his
- 1:37:38Speaker 8: name a lot. Maybe you hear it when Dave reads
- 1:37:41Speaker 8: the you know, the ending script and you see the
- 1:37:44Speaker 8: the you know, the credits to our final show or
- 1:37:46Speaker 8: to the show at the end. But Patrick mcdrowsky has
- 1:37:49Speaker 8: been an m VP of this whole process and it's
- 1:37:51Speaker 8: been a lot of fun to get the chance to
- 1:37:53Speaker 8: work with him.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I believe that tell everybody about the change, just
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: so they'll know what's going on with regard those who
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: have been accustomed to seeing seeing you and seeing Dave,
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: Raymond and the rest of the crew work these telecasts
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: now because it's a little bit different when it's going
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: to come to the streaming now, isn't it.
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:38:14Speaker 8: So I'll try, you know, be as concise as possible
- 1:38:18Speaker 8: of this will hitting on some of the you know,
- 1:38:20Speaker 8: the important points. First of all, if you did not
- 1:38:23Speaker 8: watch Rangers games through Victory Plus, if you watched it
- 1:38:26Speaker 8: through some other means nothing, you're not impacted at all.
- 1:38:30Speaker 8: So this only impacts people who watch games on Victory
- 1:38:34Speaker 8: Plus as they're direct to consumer streaming option in market,
- 1:38:38Speaker 8: which I say only, I mean that that is a
- 1:38:40Speaker 8: lot of people.
- 1:38:41Speaker 5: But this does not impact everyone.
- 1:38:43Speaker 8: So I've already had some people for whom this does
- 1:38:46Speaker 8: not impact.
- 1:38:46Speaker 5: Wonder Well, how does this? You know? I watch it
- 1:38:49Speaker 5: on Spectrum, I watch it on Direct TV. What do
- 1:38:51Speaker 5: I do now?
- 1:38:52Speaker 8: Well, that that's not going to change, you know. Unfortunately,
- 1:38:58Speaker 8: you know, today's not usually when you make some announcement
- 1:39:01Speaker 8: like this, you think, oh this is great, big changes
- 1:39:03Speaker 8: whatever this There's nothing about today that's a celebration or
- 1:39:06Speaker 8: a win for anyone. Unfortunately, the Rangers felt like the
- 1:39:12Speaker 8: relationship with our previous streaming provider, Victory Plus, had gone
- 1:39:17Speaker 8: to a point where, you know, the Rangers need to
- 1:39:19Speaker 8: preemptively and proactively make a change. I'm not you know,
- 1:39:24Speaker 8: I it's not my place to necessarily share any of
- 1:39:27Speaker 8: the specifics for you know, from my legal purposes. But
- 1:39:31Speaker 8: you know, their third party outlets like Awful Announcing and
- 1:39:34Speaker 8: Sports Business Journal. I think even local outlets like the
- 1:39:36Speaker 8: Dallas Morning News have kind of reported what exactly is
- 1:39:39Speaker 8: going on. I also share that I think an hour
- 1:39:41Speaker 8: ago the Anaheim Duck severtise with Victory Plus. So you know,
- 1:39:45Speaker 8: this was not a change the Rangers wanted to make.
- 1:39:47Speaker 8: There's no benefit for the Rangers, a first place team
- 1:39:49Speaker 8: to make a big change like this, and it is
- 1:39:51Speaker 8: a big change in the middle of the season, without
- 1:39:53Speaker 8: months of runway to help get everyone on board and
- 1:39:57Speaker 8: orient them. But was necessary to make sure that the
- 1:40:01Speaker 8: Rangers had to direct to consumer streaming option in market.
- 1:40:05Speaker 8: And I think the priority and I can also say
- 1:40:11Speaker 8: that this is not some money making move. The Rangers
- 1:40:13Speaker 8: are not. They're they're losing money in this whole equation,
- 1:40:17Speaker 8: not making money unfortunately because of you know what's gone
- 1:40:20Speaker 8: on with the previous carrier, and you know, the priority
- 1:40:24Speaker 8: was to find a service that was going to be
- 1:40:25Speaker 8: able to honor the subscriptions for existing Victory Plus subscribers,
- 1:40:31Speaker 8: and so in Buzzer BZZR, which is the new streaming
- 1:40:35Speaker 8: platform as of I guess technically now but will really
- 1:40:39Speaker 8: be introduced on Friday when the second half begins, if
- 1:40:43Speaker 8: you have a Victory or had a Victory Plus subscription, that.
- 1:40:46Speaker 5: Will be honored at no additional cost.
- 1:40:48Speaker 8: And that was I know, a priority, so that fans
- 1:40:51Speaker 8: didn't have to double play.
- 1:40:52Speaker 5: There were there were maybe.
- 1:40:54Speaker 8: More prominent services that would be a little more widely
- 1:40:58Speaker 8: accessible as we speak right now, But they were gonna
- 1:41:01Speaker 8: make fans double pay, and the Rangers didn't feel like
- 1:41:04Speaker 8: that was appropriate. Buzzers, excuse me, Greig, and you were
- 1:41:07Speaker 8: platform and it will become more and more available. You know,
- 1:41:13Speaker 8: there are a lot of people working hard to try
- 1:41:16Speaker 8: and make that happen as soon as possible. But you know,
- 1:41:20Speaker 8: I get that there are a lot of fans who
- 1:41:21Speaker 8: are kind of thrown off, you know, and it is
- 1:41:23Speaker 8: either're frustrated, they're confused.
- 1:41:26Speaker 5: I get that.
- 1:41:26Speaker 8: I wish, you know, I wish that there were you know,
- 1:41:29Speaker 8: there was a button I could press to alleviate all concerns.
- 1:41:31Speaker 5: I will say, you know, the Rangers have.
- 1:41:35Speaker 8: Created an email in partnership with Buzzer. It's t x
- 1:41:39Speaker 8: Rangers at dzzr dot com. That's probably the best way
- 1:41:44Speaker 8: to get immediate help without sitting on hold for a
- 1:41:48Speaker 8: long time. As you can imagine, there are a lot
- 1:41:50Speaker 8: of people calling the phones to try and get answers,
- 1:41:53Speaker 8: but that email address is the best way to try
- 1:41:55Speaker 8: and get some of those questions answered. But again, I'll
- 1:41:59Speaker 8: just say, you know, you can read the tea leaves.
- 1:42:02Speaker 8: There's some bread crumb crumbs that point towards stuff as
- 1:42:07Speaker 8: to why the change was made. It is not something
- 1:42:11Speaker 8: that anyone wanted to have to do in the middle
- 1:42:13Speaker 8: of a season. And I know the Rangers understand this,
- 1:42:16Speaker 8: you know, I was just talking to Dave Raymond, and
- 1:42:19Speaker 8: we understand this that there are a lot of fans
- 1:42:21Speaker 8: who now are even at minimum, you know, you're.
- 1:42:24Speaker 5: Tech savvy, you're aligned well with this.
- 1:42:27Speaker 8: At minimum, you still have to go through the trouble
- 1:42:29Speaker 8: of downloading a new app. But there are a lot
- 1:42:31Speaker 8: of people maybe that app is not compatible yet with
- 1:42:33Speaker 8: whatever service they have. You know, maybe you're not tech savvy,
- 1:42:38Speaker 8: so just downloading a new app is not as easy
- 1:42:41Speaker 8: for you as it is for some people. We get
- 1:42:43Speaker 8: all that it would it would not be anyone's objective
- 1:42:46Speaker 8: to take a first place team and make it difficult
- 1:42:48Speaker 8: for more difficult for people to consume their games. But
- 1:42:52Speaker 8: unfortunately the Rangers were in a position where they felt
- 1:42:54Speaker 8: like they needed to make this decision so that a
- 1:42:57Speaker 8: direct to consumer option was just even that an option,
- 1:43:01Speaker 8: because there are fears that that would perhaps not be
- 1:43:03Speaker 8: the case.
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: Well, and again, to review what you're saying for those
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: who are watching and whether like a direct TV like
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: I have, or or Spectrum or the Friday night games
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: here in Mark in the Austin market and kb kbv
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: O on the CW. The all of that is still intact.
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: All of that remains in play again. And I would
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: also say this is kind of emblematic of what's going
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: on with other regional sports networks across the country. Right
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: the potteries had to go through diamondbacks, rocky. I mean,
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: there were several teams that have had to go through
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: these types of things.
- 1:43:34Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, you know, it's a it's a new landscape,
- 1:43:37Speaker 8: and you.
- 1:43:38Speaker 5: Know, thankfully things have gone great.
- 1:43:39Speaker 8: You know with RSN as a whole, you know, the
- 1:43:43Speaker 8: Rangers efforted not to provide just one path for people
- 1:43:46Speaker 8: to consume games, but you know, an in market streaming
- 1:43:51Speaker 8: option as well as you know, the over the air
- 1:43:53Speaker 8: options like you mentioned on Fridays on CW, and then
- 1:43:56Speaker 8: you know your standard distributors like Direct TV or Spectrum.
- 1:44:01Speaker 8: So you know it there obviously have been some bumps
- 1:44:05Speaker 8: along the way, but you know, we feel really good
- 1:44:06Speaker 8: about what we've been able to to uh check off
- 1:44:11Speaker 8: and achieve up to this point. And unfortunately, you know,
- 1:44:14Speaker 8: something kind of out of our control. Again, I would
- 1:44:17Speaker 8: encourage people if you want more answers, Uh, Sports Business Journal,
- 1:44:22Speaker 8: awful announcing, Dallas Morning News, and I'm sure even now
- 1:44:24Speaker 8: other outlets. And you look to southern California with the
- 1:44:27Speaker 8: Anaheim Duck severing ties of victory, plus that there's just
- 1:44:31Speaker 8: stuff that's kind of out of out of our control.
- 1:44:33Speaker 8: And I think the Rangers and all the people who
- 1:44:37Speaker 8: are tasked with these decisions, that's you.
- 1:44:39Speaker 5: Know, way above my pay grade.
- 1:44:40Speaker 8: Uh, you know, have been working really hard the last
- 1:44:44Speaker 8: have a much amount of time to try and figure
- 1:44:46Speaker 8: out the best way to move forward.
- 1:44:48Speaker 5: And but I get it.
- 1:44:50Speaker 8: You know, I understand that change is not it's not easy,
- 1:44:52Speaker 8: it's not fun, and I understand, and you'll feel for
- 1:44:56Speaker 8: the fans who are really frustrated right now.
- 1:44:58Speaker 5: Hopefully, uh, you know.
- 1:44:59Speaker 8: You find that the transition is easy, but understandably that's
- 1:45:03Speaker 8: not going to be the case for everyone. And you know,
- 1:45:06Speaker 8: hopefully we can you know, work together to find a
- 1:45:08Speaker 8: strong path forward.
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: Okay, And I did not mean to make most of
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: our time together about this.
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: So I'll do this.
- 1:45:15Speaker 8: Yeah, I understand, I mean, I and I'll just I'll
- 1:45:19Speaker 8: end with this like I I don't want to come
- 1:45:21Speaker 8: off as like I'm just relaying you know, some pr spin.
- 1:45:24Speaker 5: I get it.
- 1:45:25Speaker 8: You know, I, at heart, before I took this job,
- 1:45:27Speaker 8: I'm a Rangers fan, and if I didn't have the
- 1:45:29Speaker 8: ability to watch the Rangers, you know, I'd be really frustrated.
- 1:45:32Speaker 5: And it might be tough to.
- 1:45:35Speaker 8: To absorb this now, But I think this move was
- 1:45:38Speaker 8: made to ensure that as many people in market and
- 1:45:42Speaker 8: out of market have the ability to watch the Rangers
- 1:45:44Speaker 8: through one means.
- 1:45:45Speaker 5: Or the other.
- 1:45:46Speaker 8: It just there's a little bit of an adjustment with
- 1:45:48Speaker 8: this transition, and hopefully we can get through it smoothly.
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: Great.
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: Before we get done here, I want to I want
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: to ask you this as the second half gets underway, what,
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: in your mind is the most important thing to happen
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: in order for this ball club to maintain first place
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: or make sure they're a postseason participant. Get it, whether
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: it's wild card, winning the division, whatever, what needs to
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: happen more than anything else.
- 1:46:12Speaker 8: Jared, Yeah, you know, it would be amazing if you
- 1:46:15Speaker 8: could keep White, Langford and Corey Seeker healthy for as
- 1:46:17Speaker 8: many games as possible. I think you've got to have
- 1:46:19Speaker 8: one of those guys though, and you know, thankfully right
- 1:46:22Speaker 8: now why it's healthy. Hopefully we can get Corey back
- 1:46:24Speaker 8: in the next week or two. It's just awfully tough
- 1:46:27Speaker 8: to go one sixty two with your two best players
- 1:46:30Speaker 8: giving you less.
- 1:46:31Speaker 5: Than half the games worth of production. That's, you know,
- 1:46:33Speaker 5: not their fault.
- 1:46:34Speaker 8: You know, they're not trying to get hurt, but that's
- 1:46:36Speaker 8: just the reality of what the Rangers have faced. I
- 1:46:38Speaker 8: think the other thing, and I only put this second
- 1:46:41Speaker 8: because it's a little bit easier to address the bullpen.
- 1:46:45Speaker 8: But the bullpen, the bullpen's leaguing, you know, injuries and
- 1:46:50Speaker 8: maybe exposure and whatnot. They're doing the best they can.
- 1:46:52Speaker 8: I mean, this was not a bullpen that on paper
- 1:46:54Speaker 8: should have been as good as it was for as
- 1:46:57Speaker 8: long as it was. But you know, the bullpen's in
- 1:46:59Speaker 8: a position now where some reinforcements are needed, and so
- 1:47:02Speaker 8: hopefully between now and the trade deadline, the front office
- 1:47:04Speaker 8: is able to make some moves, and usually bolpen moves
- 1:47:07Speaker 8: unless you're trying to get an elite, top end closer,
- 1:47:09Speaker 8: which the Rangers don't need because they have in Jacob
- 1:47:11Speaker 8: Latz with the ways performed, but just some guys to
- 1:47:14Speaker 8: help get you from the sixth to the seventh to
- 1:47:16Speaker 8: the eighth to give the ball to Jacob Latz. You know,
- 1:47:19Speaker 8: I think some bulpend depth is going to be really
- 1:47:20Speaker 8: important for this ball club.
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: All right, Hey, we will check in with you again
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: when we get down the going down the stretch of
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: the Pennant Drive. And I really appreciate all the explanation,
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: and it's always good to visit with you. And so
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: I'm coming up for a ball game in a couple
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: of weeks. I'll try to hook up with you out
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: by the press box. All right, I'll do it.
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: Thank you, Jared. It's great to visit with you. Appreciate it.
- 1:47:41Speaker 5: Craig, thanks so much.
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: You bet.
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: That's Jared Sandler from the Rangers TV and Radio Networks.
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: program on thirteen under the Zone.
